“Joliet is his town,” said Tom Carstens, executive director of the Joliet Park District.

Marcum, 56, was first elected to the district’s Board of Commissioners in 2011 and had been president since 2013. He died Tuesday morning from complications of bile duct cancer.

“He was all about improvements for the park district,” said board Vice President Sue Gulas, a close friend of Marcum’s for more than 30 years.

Although more recently the district has been the subject of a controversy involving ex-Executive Director Dominic Egizio, who resigned last year over allegations he harassed an employee, Gulas said that Marcum’s legacy in the district is one of many accomplishments.

Among them are the $19 million bond referendum of 2014, she said, which passed with 70 percent voter approval and funded an East Side recreational facility, new equipment in 16 parks, and road and trail improvements in Pilcher Park. Gulas also mentioned the Moonlight Golf Scramble that Marcum started to benefit special recreation programming.

And although he was behind many projects in Joliet, Marcum’s character defined him as much as his achievements.

“He was everybody’s friend,” Gulas said, recalling how Marcum was always there to provide a listening ear or friendly advice.

Gulas was among a group of Marcum’s close friends to organize a fundraiser in April for his medical expenses after he was diagnosed with cancer in January. She expected 350 or 400 people to attend the event at the Jacob Henry Mansion, but more than 500 came out to offer their support.

“He was just a warm-hearted, caring person,” said Marcum’s son, Tyler Marcum, who stressed that his father tried to make everyone’s life better and taught his children to share his values.

Marcum also was a man of and for Joliet.

Marcum gave back to Joliet Public Schools District 86 by serving on its Board of School Inspectors from 1991 to 2003, when he stepped down to run for City Council.

All Saints’ and All Souls’ days remembered in Joliet churches

Ask the eighth-grade students at St. Mary Nativity in Joliet and hear different answers.

For Rachel Carreno, it’s St. Teresa of Avila and her zeal for holiness. For Lauren Paris, it’s the teen virgin martyr St. Maria Goretti’s love for purity. And for Jalen Turley, it’s St. Damien of Molokai, missionary to Hawaii.

Kevin Rubio said he has a special connection to St. Toribio Romo, patron saint of immigrants. Last summer, Kevin and his family prayed the rosary every day for a week for the intention of Kevin’s father. They added this plea: St. Toribio, pray for us!

Kevin believes the saint interceded for his family.

“After that, my dad got his papers,” Kevin said.

Communion of saints

The liturgical feasts of All Saints’ Day (Nov. 1) and All Souls’ Day (Nov. 2) are based on the concept of the communion saints: Christians living and deceased are united in one mystical body with Jesus as its head.

The commemoration of both days have their roots in the early centuries of the Christian church. All Saints’ Day is a time to reflect and emulate those in heaven; All Souls’ Day is a time to remember families and friends who have died. For Catholics, honoring All Saints’ Day is connected with the belief in purgatory – a place where souls destined for heaven are detained for purification – and speeding their loved ones along with special prayers.

At St. Mary Nativity, Carol Stiff, eighth-grade homeroom teacher and religion teacher for grades five through eight, helps prepare her eighth-grade students for the sacrament of confirmation through studying the saints.

Students typically choose a saint name at the time of confirmation, a personal role model for emulation, Stiff said.

“Students can relate to them because many of them were just ordinary people who tried to live a good life, a holy life, and to have virtues they can identify with,” Stiff said.

Not just for Catholics

Although All Saints’ and All Souls’ days are often viewed as Roman Catholic holy days, certain Protestant denominations, such as some Lutheran and Episcopalian churches, also honor those days.

The Rev. Keith Forni, pastor of First and Santa Cruz Lutheran Church in Joliet, said All Saints’ Day is historically overshadowed by Reformation Day on Oct. 31. But All Saints’ Day is growing in popularity among Lutherans, who typically celebrate it either on Nov. 1 or the first Sunday in November, Forni added.

Forni said Reformation Day is the remembrance of Martin Luther posting his 95 theses on the door of All Saints Church in Wittenburg, Germany. In those theses, Luther challenged certain practices of the Catholic faith.

Because First and Santa Cruz has a

large Hispanic membership, Forni said his church also observes the Day of the Dead, which coincides with All Souls’ Day on Nov. 2.

At Forni’s church, people create “Tables of Remembrance,” on which they place vigil candles as well as photographs and, perhaps, favorite foods of their “faithful departed.”

“It has a real impact, and people have responded very strongly to it,” Forni said. “It gives a very palpable sense of community, of worshipping together.”

This year, deceased loved ones who ministered in Joliet will be remembered in a special worship service on Sunday in honor of First and Santa Cruz’s 25th anniversary, Forni said.

Keeping a connection with Christians who also struggled and now “rest in the Lord” reminds people they don’t sojourn alone, Forni said.

Joliet police: Man attacks girls, steals bicycle

Joliet business tax expansion would take in ‘a few’ homes

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The proposed expansion of a downtown business property tax will also take in some residential property.

City Manager Jim Hock said “a few” residential properties will be included while being questioned about the proposal by Councilwoman Brooke Hernandez Brewer.

“We did hear from people who wanted to not be included in the boundaries.”

Brewer said, asking whether the boundaries for the proposed special service area could be changed.

The council voted Tuesday to add two properties that are part of the Jacob Henry Mansion Estate after the owners of the mansion had asked that the lots be added to the special service area.

But Hock said that Tuesday was the last time the council could change the boundaries of the special service area according to the law governing the process. A public hearing on the proposal was held in October.

Hock said some residential properties were added to the proposed special service area because by law it has to be contiguous.

“As much as we could, we excluded residential wherever we could,” he said.

He noted that there are residential properties downtown that are included in the special service area.

The council expects to vote Dec. 20 on whether to approve the expanded special service area, which now covers the

downtown business district.

The proposal is to expand the boundaries to business corridors along Cass, Collins and South Chicago streets.

The tax amounts to 95 cents per $100 in assessed valuation, which city officials said would result in an 8.6 percent increase. The tax now generates $400,000 a year. It is expected to produce $630,000 if the expansion is approved.

The expansion has been promoted as an economic development proposal.

Brewer was the only council member to vote against including the additional lots at Jacob Henry Mansion Estate in the special service area.

She said after the meeting that she had questions about the special service area and how the tax would be applied.

“The people that live in the area need to be considered,” she said.

Brewer is the newest member on the council, having been appointed at the Oct. 4 meeting to fill the seat vacated by the resignation of Jim McFarland.

ReStore relocation

The council approved a special use permit that will allow Will County Habitat for Humanity to move its ReStore retail operation into the former Century Tile store at 1395 N. Larkin Ave. “I think this is a great use for the property, and I wish them well,” Councilman Michael Turk said as he joined other council members in a unanimous vote for the permit.

The council twice turned down special use permits sought by DriveTime to open a used-car business at the location.

JOLIET – Police say a 31-year-old man attacked two Joliet girls while stealing a bicycle Saturday night.

The mugging occurred about 8:28 p.m. as a 16-year-old girl was riding her bike on Wheeler Avenue near Manor Court with her 12-yearold friend walking next to her, Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said.

“They were walking and riding down ​Dontea M. the street when Don- Thomas tea M. Thomas ran at them,” Gregory said. The girls tried to avoid Thomas, but when the 12-year-old girl ran away, she fell and Thomas “kicked her multiple times,” Gregory said.

When the older girl went back to help her friend, Thomas got onto her black BMX Mongoose bicycle and

rode at them, Gregory said.

“The girls ran again and Thomas yelled, ‘I’m going to gun you down,’ before pedaling away,” Gregory said.

Shortly after the older girl called 911 to report the theft, police officers were in the 900 block of West Park Avenue on an unrelated call when Thomas rode by them. Thomas was detained because he and the bicycle matched the description police had been given, Gregory said.

“The girls were interviewed separately and both related what had happened and identified Thomas as the suspect,” Gregory said.

Thomas, of the 2400 block of Poplar Street, was arrested on charges of aggravated battery, robbery and theft.

He is being held in the Will County Jail on $75,000 bond.

According to Will County Court records, Thomas pleaded guilty to delivery of drugs after an arrest by Joliet police in 2007 and was sentenced to four years in prison.

Joliet council gets budget, will review it later

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A $281 million budget proposal was presented to the Joliet City Council on Tuesday with little discussion.

The council could begin meeting in workshop sessions next week to review details of the budget.

The timing of the budget workshop meetings was the only discussion as City Manager Jim Hock suggested that the first meetings be held on Nov. 10 and 16. Hock said he would check with individual council members to make sure they are available on those dates.

Hock provided the budget to council members without a presentation.

He noted that the council has the proposal a month earlier than in 2015.

Hock said the budget would be posted on the city’s website, cityofjoliet. info, on Wednesday morning.

The budget projects a $6.8 million deficit in the general fund, which covers most daily city operations.

The city in recent years has forecast deficits in the general fund but ended the year with surpluses as rev-

enues surpassed budget estimates.

The city, however, is currently forecasting a nearly $3.8 million deficit in the general fund for the end of 2016.

The proposal calls for $179 million in spending in the general fund in 2017.

The city budgeted for nearly $175 million in general fund spending this year, but currently expects to spend more than $177 million.

In the separate water and sewer fund, the city expects to spend nearly $52.7 million, up from $40.5 million budgeted for 2016. Actual spending in the water and sewer fund for 2016 is estimated to be $47.8 million.

The City Council in October approved a 7 percent increase in water and sewer rates that takes effect this month.

General fund revenues budgeted for 2017 include: • Sales taxes of $46.7 million; • $33.7 million in property taxes, which is about $333,000 more than 2016; • $25.5 million in charges for services; • Gaming taxes of $18.5 million, predicted to be unchanged from this year.

Troy Middle School student part of classroom through FaceTime

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media correspondent When eighth-grader Deklan Mangan is in math class at Troy Middle School, he’s actually viewing his teacher from his home on an iPad using FaceTime.

He watches the math problems being done on a whiteboard on the wall in the classroom, he sees his teacher when she steps into view, and he can hear everything that goes on during the 40-minute daily class.

Deklan is homebound because of an immune deficiency that has kept him out of classrooms most of his life.

He was also born with a rare congenital condition called Russell Silver syndrome, which causes growth abnormalities and resulted in his airway being three times smaller than normal.

He has other health problems, including stage 2 fibrosis of the liver, diabetes and asthma. His conditions all work against him when he goes out into public and he can easily become sick. Even a cold can mean a trip to the emergency room if his airway narrows in the slightest.

In the past, some teachers sent home piles of homework for Deklan to scour through, which caused him a lot of anxiety. During a couple of years, schools didn’t want to give him grades for his work.

Shannon’s even been accused of having Munchhausen syndrome by

proxy and causing her son to become ill.

“I really had to fight to find somebody to understand,” Shannon said, “even though I would give them all the paperwork from the doctors.”

But at Troy Middle School, math teacher Allison Schieffer is helping Deklan get the education he needs by use of the iPad. It’s a learning experi-

ence for everyone involved and this is the first time it’s been used there.

Schieffer wanted to make Deklan feel as much a part of the classroom as the other students. She tried putting the iPad on a tripod but it made Deklan too conspicuous. Now she props the iPad on a desk – he can see the whiteboard and his classmates can see him.

“It just made sense,” Schieffer said, “He’s sitting on a desk , he feels like [other] students and he’s at the same eye level.”

When they split into groups to work on problems, Deklan joins the group via the iPad. When they play math games and move around the room, Schieffer or another student hold Deklan’s iPad so he can participate.

Deklan is a part of everything that happens in that class. He raises his hand if he knows an answer’ he even asks to use the bathroom.

“The fact that he is so attentive and participates makes it so much more successful,” Schieffer said.

Shannon has always encouraged teachers to treat Deklan like anyone else, give him the same type of work and test him the same way.

Defendant calls ex to testify again in Will County murder trial

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man representing himself in a murder case for the second time had the ex-girlfriend he also tried to have killed back on the witness stand Tuesday.

It appears Martin Elvis Gomez may argue Jessica Gustafson attempted to frame him for the May 10, 2007, slaying of Joseph Salamie. Gomez, 31, asked Gustafson about things she said to Will County Sheriff’s Office investigators before his arrest, which of them paid bills using cash allegedly stolen Martin Elvis from Salamie and how Gomez one of the victim’s credit cards was found by police.

Gomez also Tuesday called his mother, Mary Ayala, to testify she’d transferred ownership of the blue Grand Am the couple was using at the time to Gustafson and saw the credit card of “Joseph somebody” in the ashtray before detectives arrived.

Gustafson initially provided an alibi for Gomez’s whereabouts the night before Joseph N. Salamie was found slain on his 10-acre farm in Peotone Township, but she later said Gomez admitted to her that he’d robbed and killed his former landlord.

Gustafson said she grew to hate Gomez because he “had zero remorse

for what [he] did” and she wanted to ensure he wouldn’t be a part of their daughter’s life.

Gomez, who’d once lived in a trailer on the farm, stabbed Salamie more than 100 times, slit his throat and stole $1,200, prosecutors said.

Gomez was convicted of murder in 2011, but an appellate court decided he had not been given the proper warnings about representing himself and ordered a new trial. He also is serving a separate 19-year prison sentence for trying to hire another inmate, Miguel Hurtado, to kill Gustafson.

A transcript from Gomez’s first trial was read to jurors Tuesday as Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Marie Griffin was called to the stand to read retired Detective Denise Powers’ answers about what Hurtado told her Gomez told him about the slaying.

Despite the seeming degrees of separation, Gomez agreed to stipulate to the testimony.

Gomez allegedly told Hurtado he knocked on the door saying he needed to talk to Salamie, but the moment he was invited inside he stabbed his victim then “sliced him like a turkey.”

“I cut his throat twice ... thought he was dead, but Joe got back up. That’s when I finished him off,” Gomez said, according to the testimony.

Gomez also allegedly told Hurtado he felt he “slipped up” by using his cellphone while he was leaving the farm and police might be able to track it.

The trial will continue Wednesday.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A camera view of the new Will County Public Safety Complex construction project will soon be available for public viewing.

Leopardo Companies project manager Nicole McElroy on Tuesday informed the Will County Board’s Capital Improvements Committee the camera is up and running.

The camera takes a picture every 15 minutes from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Monday through Saturday of the construction site, located next to the Will County Sheriff’s Office on Laraway Road in Joliet.

An online link for residents to monitor site progress will be available soon.

As for the construction of the $30 million complex, things are moving along well with the warm weather, McElroy said. Laborers have been working Saturdays for the last month, and the plan is for them to continue doing so for the next five months.

Initial work such as the water detention pond has been completed.

Utilities work will take place in the

next few weeks.

Finance Committee

Before that meeting, Will County Executive’s Office Chief of Staff Nick Palmer provided the board’s Finance Committee an update on talks with agencies that may move dispatch services to the Public Safety Complex.

The county added on a dispatch center to its design of the complex in an effort to meet a state mandate to decrease the amount of dispatch centers in Will County from six to three.

Palmer said WESCOM is still looking for “some equity as they call it” from the county.

“They equate what we’re doing at Laraway as somehow creating inequity with WESCOM,” Palmer said to the committee.

Palmer told the committee he met with a mayor of one of the WESCOM communities who is acting as an intermediary. Palmer said he told that mayor the county is willing to listen to proposals WESCOM may have.

Palmer said he still hasn’t seen any specific requests. The county won’t be able to formally negotiate with WESCOM communities until they form as a legal entity.

JOLIET – The Will County Board’s Capital Improvements Committee on Tuesday that the full board approve a $200,000 amendment to the design contract for the new Will County Judicial Center.

If the amendment is approved Nov. 17 by the board, design firm Wight & Co. would be paid $200,000 for consulting and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification services.

The judicial center currently has a $195 million budget and construction is expected to begin in early 2018. The committee formally approved on Oct. 18 the pursuit of LEED certification for the new courthouse from the U.S. Green Buildings Council.

A couple of committee members spoke out against the contract add-on.

Committee member Ray Tuminello, R-New Lenox, said his feeling on LEED certification hasn’t changed in the past 15 years, and he knows he’s in the minority with his opinion. He said he’d rather devote the $200,000 to better products within the building, such as a specific type of stone, rather than pur-

suing what would amount to a plaque on the front door.

Committee Vice Chairman Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen, noted everything the county is doing regarding the building makes it on track for LEED certification.

County Board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, said the county promotes sustainable design elements and encourages other units of government, the private sector and residents to make environmentally friendly decisions.

“For us not to practice what we preach, I think would probably be an error in judgment,” Moustis said. “Because ultimately, it is important and it does save money in the long haul. It’s more environmentally friendly, and those things are important to people.”

Fricilone said the county can receive 50 cents per square foot from the federal government in grants related to LEED certification, a statement confirmed by Will County Resource Recovery and Energy Division grant assistant Kathy Pecora.

There was another incident of a BB hole, in a storm door at a home in the 700 block of East North Street in Morris, on Halloween night.

Severson said police have not determined whether the two incidents are related, but detectives are following all leads.

Severson said that other than the two addresses with broken windows, Halloween passed with only small incidents of tricks, such as a home that was egged.

Anyone who has information about the library or North Street vandalism is asked to call detectives at the Morris Police Department.

Deklan also FaceTimes with his English/language arts class daily.

Shannon would like him to be able to do the same with social studies and science as well.

Despite his health problems, Deklan is very much a typical 14-year-old with a sarcastic sense of humor. Although he can’t go out and

play with friends, he has met some through X-Box chat rooms and they play games together online.

Deklan loves to race radio control cars, especially with his uncle.

He goes fishing with his dad, Skypes with his older brother, Barrett, and lets his older sister, Peytan, help him with school work.

He loves reptiles and has been known to show off his live snakes and geckos to classmates during break times.

He enjoys learning, but doesn’t particularly like school. But this year school has been much different for the teen, thanks to technology and a wonderful math teacher. “She’s the best teacher I have ever had,� Deklan said.

MORRIS – Spider webs are a typical Halloween decoration, but the spider web cracks to a window on the north side of the Morris Public Library were not a decoration.

Morris Police Chief John Severson said a library staff member contacted police Monday morning after arriving at work and finding two windows shattered.

One of the windows faces Liberty Street and is in the children’s library section of the main floor. “There were two windows shot out,�

Severson said. “At this time, we don’t believe anyone entered through the front window that was completely broken out.�

The children’s library had yellow caution tape covering the inside entrance, and all lap-sit story times were canceled Monday until the window could be replaced and cleaned up.

Severson said what appears to be a BB hole is in the center of the cracks on the north window, and detectives are looking into what caused the damage. “They are reviewing video as we continue to investigate the incident,�

District 86 communications coordinator Sandy Zalewski called Marcum, “one of the most caring people I’ve ever known.”

He brought that giving nature to his high school district, too, approaching former Joliet Township District 204 Athletic Director Chris Olson in 2004 about starting a booster club.

Olson, now the school district’s director of human resources, said Marcum was an instrumental part of establishing the Joliet Township Athletic Booster Club, because school board members and administrators alike trusted his vision.

“He was tireless,” Olson said.

Marcum served as the Booster Club’s president for 11 years. In 2005, he and Olson established the annual “Night of Champions” event, a spring banquet to honor past district athletes.

Olson said that in 2008 when the Joliet Township athletic program split into two separate programs, for West and Central, respectively, Marcum was insistent that the boosters reflect the strength and unity of the Joliet community by remaining as one organization.

“This guy’s irreplaceable,” Olson said.

Marcum also was a chairman for the American Cancer Society Joliet Relay for Life for seven years, and was involved in the Will Buy Local Alliance, Joliet Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Will County Take Back the Night and Will County Old Timers Baseball Association.

He is survived by his wife, Pat Marcum, and his children, Brett (Samantha) Marcum, Patrick Marcum, Allison (Ben) Gunnink and Tyler (Beth) Marcum.

Visitation will be held 2 to 8 p.m.

Thursday at Tezak’s Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road, Joliet. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday. It will begin at Tezak’s, and be followed by a procession to Old Central Church, 15 Richards St., Joliet.

Will County Executive’s Office Deputy Chief of Staff Dave Tkac said with the modern focus on sustainable design and evolution of the building code, it’s become almost standard that projects can receive LEED Silver certification just by following the current building codes.

Committee member Chuck Maher, R-Naperville, said the question then becomes whether the $200,000 is worth a plaque on the wall.

“I don’t know that it is,” Maher said, adding that if engineers and architects are saying the project is line for LEED certification, the county should be able to pursue grant dollars anyway without the plaque.

The recommendation passed, 6-2, with Maher and Tuminello voting no.

The Rev. Kathryn White, rector at St. Edward & Christ Episcopal Church echoed that sentiment. White called All Saints’ and All Souls’ days an opportunity to pause and remember our connection with loved ones who have died.

“The souls of our beloved dead are still a part of our lives, and we are a part of their lives,” White said. “We understand that heaven is not somewhere we go only after we die. We believe we live in the presence of God.” One way St. Edward & Christ Episcopal Church observes the feasts of All Saints’ and All Souls’ days is through a Taizé celebration, which will be held Monday at the church.

The Rev. Richard Lundgren, associate rector, said he brought the service to

St. Edward & Christ 10 years ago when he was an intern. Lundgren had previously offered it at a parish in Chicago, and it was well-received.

The Taizé service originated in an ecumenical community in France, Lundgren said. It consists primarily of repetitive music, prayers for healing, scripture readings and “a lot of candles and incense.”

“It creates a comfortable, sacred place for people to rest and relax – and hopefully experience God in a different way than in the business of their lives,” Lundgren said.

St. Edward & Christ Episcopal offers the service about three times a year, Lundgren said. At the Nov. 9 service, people may add the names of deceased family and friends to a “List of Remembrance,” which will be read during the service, Lundgren said.

“Our deceased are not gone forever,” Lundgren said. “They are in a place where we, too, hope to go someday and meet them again.”

MARJORIE A. KALLAN Born: January 23, 1922 Died: October 29, 2016

Marjorie A. (nee McGarry) Kallan, of Joliet, passed away Saturday, October 29, 2016 at the age of 94.

She was born in Joliet on January 23, 1922, to the late Joseph and Alma (nee Carlson) McGarry. Marjorie attended St. Raymond’s Grade School, St. Francis Academy and the College of St. Francis.

During World War II, she took the train to the Merchandise Mart where she sold war bonds. Marjorie married U.S. Army veteran Harry C. Kallan on November 9, 1946. After raising her six children, she held various bookkeeping jobs, the last at her son’s law firm. She was an accomplished cook and baker who always had chocolate chips cookies in the freezer. She was a talented seamstress who created countless outfits as well as helping her daughters with their 4-H projects. She played the harp and piano, was an avid reader and loved a good game of solitaire. She enjoyed traveling, having visited Europe, Russia, Canada and much of the United States.

Marjorie is survived by her children, Daniel (Sharon) Kallan, Kathleen (Anthony) Chereck, Jane (Michael) Marra, Anita Wohlrab, Cynthia (the late Michael) Brandt, and David Kallan; her grandchildren, Adam and Savannah Kallan, Bridget (Daniel) Guerndt and Julie Ann Marra, Matthew (Stephanie) and Samuel Wohlrab, Samantha and Katherine Brandt; great-grandchildren, Kathleen Kallan and Daniel Wohlrab, due in December; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; her brother, John J. McGarry; and her sister, Mary A. Haley.

Glen happily devoted countless years of his life to the Joliet community, being involved as a volunteer basketball coach at St. Paul the Apostle School, 3 terms on the Joliet Grade School’s Board of School Inspectors, President of the Greater Joliet Youth Foundation, President of the Instrumental Music Parents Association, a participant of 15 years and Chair of 5 years for the Joliet Relay for Life, Co-chair for the American Cancer Society Regional Board, President of the Joliet Township High School Athletic Boosters, Co-Chair of the Joliet Township High School Strategic Plan Committee, Head Judge of the Will County Spelling Contest, Big Brother with Big Brother/Big Sister, committee member of Take Back the Night, volunteer at the Daybreak Shelter, the President and instrumental in establishing the Joliet Grade Schools Foundation for Educational Excellence, WJOL political analyst, 2 Terms with the Joliet Park District and 3 years as President, City Center Partnership Christmas Parade Committee, Right Moves for Youth Board Members, Old Timers Baseball Association and Men Who Cook. Aside from his family, nothing gave Glen more pleasure than serving the Joliet Community. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Nette worked different assignments, most notably with cardiac care patients; which earned special recognition for her insatiable ability to enlighten those she cared for with her kindred spirit and infectious laugh. She last worked as a surgical nurse, with a total of more than 35 years of service to Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.

Nette was preceded in death by her parents, Lent and Marie Travis.

CHICAGO – The Illinois Supreme Court on Monday barred a Chicago-area judicial candidate accused of posing as a judge during traffic court from taking the bench if she wins and revoked her law license.

Rhonda Crawford, 45, was a shoo-in to win in November until news that she briefly played a judge drew ridicule and condemnation among those who practice law in Cook County. Her only opponent, Judge Maryam Ahmad, is a write-in candidate.

Crawford’s attorney did not return a telephone call Monday night seeking comment on the court’s action.

Public hearing planned for Chicago train expansion

ROLLING MEADOWS – A former Michigan woman has been convicted of murder in the 1979 death of her husband in suburban Chicago. The Daily Herald reported that jurors returned the verdict Monday against 69-year-old Jacquelyn Greco in the death of Carl Gaimari.

Prosecutors said greed motivated Greco and another man to arrange a home invasion and robbery April 30, 1979. It began when two masked gunman entered the home in Inverness, tied Greco up and locked her and three of her children in a closet.

CHICAGO – Chicago residents will get a chance to weigh in on plans to move ahead with the first city train expansion in more than 20 years.

The Chicago Transit Authority recently announced it’s moving forward with a $2.3 billion expansion of the Red Line. The train line runs north and south in the city with stops downtown and near ballparks for the Cubs and White Sox. The city plans to extend the line farther south. Construction could begin in 2022.

A public hearing was planned Tuesday at St. John Missionary Baptist Church.

Andrea Reed with the Greater Roseland Chamber of Commerce on the South Side told the Chicago Tribune the extension is “much needed.” But homeowner Prentiss Smith said the train could crack building foundations and possibly bring more crime.

Munger, who called herself Rauner’s “budgetary wingman,” supports his agenda and took millions in donations from the former venture capitalist and his allies. But she insists she’s stood up to Rauner. She delayed paychecks for elected officials during the impasse, and defied his request to not pay public-employee unions the “fair share” dues her office deducts from state worker paychecks.

Mendoza, a former legislator, says she’s also created waves within her party. She once challenged a Madigan-backed candidate and publicly disagreed with Mayor Rahm Emanuel as clerk when he pitched raising the price of parking permits. But she voted with House Democrats on spending plans and has publicly praised the speaker, including during a 2011 ceremony nominating him to the post he’s held almost continuously since 1983.

University of Illinois to push for full state funding

URBANA – The University of Illinois is planning to try again for full state funding in fiscal 2018, which it hasn’t seen since 2015.

The university is also focusing on its efforts for a multiyear budget arrangement with Illinois, The News-Gazette reported.

It plans to announce proposed legislation next week that would provide five years of guaranteed funding in exchange of hitting certain educational benchmarks.

Those benchmarks include limiting tuition increases to the rate of inflation, providing adequate financial aid or achieving certain graduation rates. In return, the university would receive guaranteed funding for five years, regulatory relief and procurement reform, which faculty members have requested to accelerate the process of buying research equipment and other materials.

HELENA, Ala. – A deadly explosion that sparked a geyser of fire shut down a vital pipeline supplying gasoline to millions of people across the Southeast, raising fears of another round of gas shortages and price increases after the pipeline’s second accident and shutdown in two months.

Continuing fires in the drought-stricken area of central Alabama hampered officials’ efforts to fully assess the damage Tuesday afternoon, and firefighters built an earthen berm to contain the burning fuel.

The accident happened when a dirt-moving track hoe struck the pipeline, ignited gasoline and sparked a blast Monday, killing one worker and injuring five others, Georgia-based Colonial Pipeline said.

2 bus drivers among 6 killed in Baltimore crash

BALTIMORE – A school bus was blocks away from its first stop Tuesday morning when it hit a cemetery wall, rear-ended a car and then ricocheted off a roadside pillar into an oncoming commuter bus. The pre-dawn crash killed six people and injured 10, authorities said.

There were virtually no skid marks at the crash scene, suggesting no braking by the 67-year-old school bus driver,

who was killed, and leading to what Baltimore police spokesman T.J. Smith called a working theory that he had suffered some sort of medical emergency.

The 33-year-old female driver of the Maryland Transit Administration bus also died at the scene, along with four of her 12 passengers, Smith said.

All eight of the surviving commuter bus riders were hurt, two of them critically, he said.

Prosecution, defense cite video in traffic stop killing CINCINNATI – The lead prosecutor and defense attorney Tuesday offered sharply conflicting views of what a police body camera video will tell jurors about what happened when a white officer fatally shot a black man during a 2015 traffic stop.

Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters said the video shows Ray Tensing was lying when he said he was in danger of being dragged to death and that the now-fired University of Cincinnati officer acted contrary to police standards and the law when he shot an unarmed Sam DuBose.

Attorney Stewart Mathews said the prosecution interpretation was so different, it was as if they watched different videos. Tensing was facing death or serious injury from “a 3,000-pound car that he [DuBose] turned into a weapon,” Mathews told jurors.

Clinton, Trump warn of consequences if rival wins

By JULIE PACE and JONATHAN LEMIRE The Associated Press DADE CITY, Fla. – Donald Trump could draw the United States into nuclear war, Hillary Clinton warns. Clinton would plunge the country into a constitutional crisis, he says.

As the caustic presidential race lurches toward the finish line, each candidate is aggressively casting the other as a catastrophic choice for the White House. Making an affirmative case about their own qualifications and vision has become a secondary priority.

It’s an ugly conclusion to a contest featuring two of the most unpopular presidential candidates in modern American politics. The sexual assault accusations that have trailed Trump in the race’s closing weeks and a new FBI review into Clinton’s email habits seem likely to only reinforce the public’s negative perceptions, leaving the candidates to essentially argue to voters that they’re the best of two unappealing options.

“I would rather be here talking about nearly anything else,” Clinton said Tuesday during a rally in Florida where she leveled a series of attacks on Trump’s character and preparedness for the White House. “But I can’t just talk about all of the good things we want to do.”

Indeed, Clinton’s speeches in this final full week of campaigning have overwhelmingly focused on Trump. On Monday, she warned against giving Trump the authority to order a nuclear attack, bringing along a former nuclear launch officer to bolster her point.

“Imagine his advisers afraid to tell him what he doesn’t want to hear, racing against his legendarily short attention span to lay out life-and-

death choices too complex to be reduced to a single tweet,” Clinton said Monday in Ohio. “Then imagine him plunging us into a war because somebody got under his very thin skin.”

After spending much of the summer and fall tearing Trump down, Clinton had planned to close the campaign on a more positive note. She talked about giving Americans something to vote for, not just against. And with public opinion polls showing her with solid leads in most battleground states, she started talking about healing divisions and unifying the country after the election.

But her advisers say they saw polls tighten even before the FBI launched its new email review. The campaign now believes she needs to make a last push to define Trump as an unacceptable choice in order to seal the deal with persuadable voters.

On Tuesday, Clinton focused on Trump’s demeaning and predatory comments about women, calling him a “bully.” This time she brought with her former Miss Universe Alicia Machado.

Trump criticized Machado for gaining weight after winning the 1996 contest.

Trump’s campaign rhetoric has always been dark, full of searing depictions of a crumbling nation, and he has not been shy about going negative on Clinton. He routinely calls her “Crooked Hillary” and “the most corrupt person ever to run for the White House.”

But Trump, too, has stepped up his broadsides after the last weeks of October handed him a pair of potentially potent political gifts: the projected “Obamacare” premium rate hike and FBI Director James Comey’s letter revealing that agents are reviewing emails that may be connected to Clinton’s private server.

During any given campaign season, one or maybe two state legislative campaigns wind up running ads on Chicago broadcast TV stations. But in the age of Gov. Bruce Rauner’s gigantic campaign contributions, it may be easier to count the number of Chicago-area candidates who aren’t running any city broadcast ads.

State Rep. Michael McAuliffe, R-Chicago, started the trend by airing Chicago broadcast TV ads at the beginning of August – an act completely without precedent in the General Assembly.

Chicago broadcast ads are so expensive that campaigns usually don’t start airing them until mid- to late October.

The ads also are incredibly inefficient. The Chicago media market has about 7.9 million people ages 12 or older, as measured by the ratings companies.

Four years ago, during the last presidential cycle, a total of 38,748 votes were cast in McAuliffe’s race. So when McAuliffe and other House candidates air these ads, they’re aiming them at only about half a percentage point of the entire media market. It’s actually much lower than that because most people already have made up their minds by now. So it’s like using a hydrogen bomb to kill a tiny gnat.

Just last week, the cash-rich Republicans went up on Chicago broadcast

Chris Winger, R-Wood Dale, vs. Cynthia Borbas, who has been up on Chicago broadcast for a little while with an ad blasting Winger for her social conservatism; Rep. David Olsen, R-Downers Grove, who is fending off a late cable TV buy from Greg Hose; Steve Reick, who’s up against John Bartman, who just launched cable ads in retiring McHenry County Democratic Rep. Jack Franks’ district; and Michelle Smith vs. Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, who also is on Chicago broadcast.

Keep in mind, those are just the latest to air the ads. Plenty of others already were on Chicago broadcast.

Both candidates in the Rep. Kate Cloonen, D-Chicago, race have been airing broadcast TV, as have both in Democratic Rep. Andy Skoog’s LaSalle County-area race and both in Democratic Sen. Tom Cullerton’s DuPage County contest, as well as Rep. McAuliffe’s opponent, Merry Marwig, among others.

And it’s not just the two parties airing the spots. Dan Proft said his Liberty Principles PAC is airing Chicago broadcast ads on behalf of six Republicans.

And it’s not just happening in Chicago. St. Louis broadcast TV also has been a relative rarity for legislative campaign ads. Heck, many statewide candidates forgo advertising in St. Louis because of its high cost-to-benefit ratio.

Rep. Dwight Kay, R-Glen Carbon, has been running ads on St. Louis TV for several weeks, and the Democrats just started airing ads there for Rep. Dan Beiser, D-Alton, to match his Republican opponent Mike Babcock’s buy.

The Democrats also started running St. Louis ads for Mike Mathis against Rep. Avery Bourne, R-Raymond.

“It’s crazy,” one Metro East pal said about the flood of St. Louis ads. “I want to throw something at the TV.” Head up the Mississippi River and you’ll see broadcast TV ads in the Quad Cities for and against Rep. Mike Smiddy, D-Hillsdale. As in St. Louis, most people who watch Quad Cities TV stations don’t live in Illinois.

Then head as far south in Illinois as you can go and Rep. John Bradley, D-Marion, reportedly is pushing a completely unheard of 3,900 gross ratings points on TV stations in and near his district. Generally, if you want

half your targeted audience to see an ad three times, you’ll “push” 150 ratings points. Do the math. Bradley must be advertising 24 hours a day on every program.

The Republicans, by the way, estimated last week that they’ve pushed 5,000 points statewide on their anti-House Speaker Michael Madigan message.

But are any of these ads working this late in the game?

Last week, a friend of mine who doesn’t watch much broadcast TV said he was watching “Chicago’s Very Own” WGN and texted me the ads as they popped up on his TV: “Anti-Yingling, pro-Duckworth, anti-Mendoza, anti-Skoog, anti-Yingling (again), anti-Cloonen. All back-to-back in a single commercial break.”

A few minutes later, he texted: “Hey back to commercials! Anti-Bartman, anti-Cullerton. Anti-Trump/Rauner (new from LIFT). What is this! An ad for Target. Like, a real ad for buying cheap [stuff]. Refreshing.”

“Seriously,” he texted, “it was just one big jumble. Nothing could break through this. And if you were getting 20 pieces of mail? Shoot me now.”

Gloria Dollinger an honorable public servant

To the Editor: It’s politics as usual in Joliet, but this time, it deserves a response. An article appeared Oct. 16 in The Herald-News citing a lawsuit against Gloria Dollinger and her campaign for Will County Board District 10. It’s just a smokescreen, something to dissuade us from concentrating on the character of the candidates.

Instead, an intimidation game is waged to send doubt among the

voters in order to win an election.

Have we seriously become so sensitive that we no longer can handle a voicemail from a political campaign? Not to mention the candidate who is waging the lawsuit is himself a lawyer. Yet, no one seems to have investigated further on this issue.

Gloria is the epitome of the type of person we should be voting into political office. She’s gracious, humble and kindhearted. Her character shines as someone who deeply cares for those around her. She is a homegrown entrepreneur and business owner, and she uses her skills and knowledge to educate members of our community on nutrition and health.

During the summer months, she volunteers her time and

talent teaching Joliet District 86 children about living a healthy life. There is no better woman, no better person, to represent Will County than Gloria.

Gloria is an honorable woman and would be a true “public servant.” She’s a strong female role model, a wife and mother of three, a loyal co-worker and a friend to all she meets. It’s time for us, as a community, to stand up and demand proven, strong individuals.

Let us look past the pettiness of this lawsuit and see Gloria Dollinger in the light of someone who will be there for the voters of Will County and not for some party. We deserve that. And we need her.

The second set, was an even more intense struggle as the two squads were tied seven times. With the set tied at 16, Marian Catholic roared out to a 19-16 lead. Back came the Celtics to pull within 19-18. Marian opened a 2318 lead, only to have the never-say-die Celtics pull within 23-20 before falling, 25-21.

sa Flynders, who had seven kills and 10 digs.

“Marian Catholic was really tough with their blocks on the net,” Flynders said. “This really hurts, but we had a great season. We won back-toback regional championships the last two years, which hasn’t been accomplished at Providence for a long time.”

Playing her first match in two weeks after suffering a concussion, senior Summer See was outstanding defensively for the Celtics with 14 digs.

Caitlin Stevens added five kills and a pair of digs.

“This was a very tough loss for us, but I am so proud of the way we played tonight,” See said. “We played our hearts out. We had a special season, winning 23 matches and winning our second consecutive regional championship.”

“When you’ve played a team two times before, you kind of know their tendencies and what they’re going to try to fix so that they could come at us,” Papesh said. “So it was more about focusing on what we do, and not so much them. So we focused on serve-receive, getting some good block touches, some good digs and hitting as hard as we can.

“We’ve really been focused on coming out strong and getting a big lead so we don’t have to fight as hard at the end, and I think we did a really great job of that today. Everybody was doing their job, and I think that’s why we succeeded today. Plainfield is a really tough team, so I’m looking forward to the next game and seeing what we’ll come out and do.”

Other leaders for the Indians were Brooklyn Bachmann (21 assists, two aces), Taylor Baranski (12 digs), Holly Bonde (four kills) and Sammi Hermann (three blocks).

“This win feels good,” Bachmann said. “This week in practice, we were stressing how Joliet West was going to be scrappy and would come back no matter what kind of lead we’d get.

we’ll struggle in passing from time to time. But that’s where I come in and have to pick those up. There were only a few points, but then we got back in it. Our team is pretty confident right now, and we’re anxious and hungry for a sectional championship. This year, we have the team to do it.”

In the second set, the Tigers used five straight service points from Emma Baxter to grab an early 5-2 lead.

Kills from Amanda Paez and Savana DelRose and an ace and a kill from Jenny Koerner helped West take an early 10-8 lead.

However, Minooka responded with a decisive 13-2 run to regain control.

Papesh served up five points, while Perinar added three kills and a block during that stretch.

But despite trailing, 21-12, the Tigers still had plenty of fight left. Lauren Widlowski had a kill and an ace, and Baxter served an ace to pull West to within 22-17 before Papesh wrapped up the victory by getting kills to secure the final three points.

“We watched a lot early and let them dictate a lot of what was going on,” Tigers coach Al Mart said. “We

talked about how we had to force Minooka to play, but we struggled with our defense and our passing. When you do that against a team like Minooka, you’re going to be down, 10-0. But after that, we played even with them and started off well in Game 2.

“I couldn’t be prouder of this group of seniors. On paper before the season started, if anybody would have told us that we’d be 27-10, I would have absolutely taken that. They’re a great group of kids who played and practiced hard. People ask why we coach, and that group of kids is why I still coach.”

PALOS HEIGHTS – An athletic Marian Catholic volleyball team, led by sophomore Temitayo Thomas and senior Rose Y’hara, ousted valiant Providence Catholic, 25-22, 25-21, Tuesday night in a Class 3A Chicago Christian Sectional semifinal.

The Spartans (28-9) won their 15th consecutive match and will meet the Manteno-Tinley Park winner in the sectional championship Thursday.

Coach Brie Isaacson’s Celtics, who were the No. 1 seed in the sectional, finished the season with a 23-14 overall mark. For the second consecutive season, they were regional champions after defeating Coal City for the Rich Central Regional crown Friday night.

Plainfield Central battles past Lincoln-Way East

ROMEOVILLE – Sometimes, the headliners don’t get the big points.

In Game 1 of a Class 4A Romeoville Sectional semifinal Tuesday night between No. 2 Lincoln-Way East and No. 3 Plainfield Central, the Wildcats’ comfortable 21-13 lead disappeared.

The junior class was on fire for East.

Madi Corey put the ball away, then combined with Haley Hart for a block.

Molly Hackett served two consecutive aces, then Hart combined with Hanna Lesiak for another stuff block.

Out of nowhere, sophomore Regan Trueblood swung to put the ball away and, a few points later, she served up an ace to give Central game point. In Game 2, it was even closer and went extra points. With the game on the line, senior Megan Brock went to the line and, with all the pressure, she served an ace.

That type of play helped Central pick up a 25-22, 27-25 victory over East.

The Wildcats will face Minooka in the sectional final at 6 p.m. Thursday.

“I knew that I had a big block, so I just swung as hard as I could, and they made the error,” Trueblood said. “I was really excited, and I knew I was going to have to serve strong when I got the ball, so I did and got an ace.”

“We’ve had kids that have stepped up all season,” Central coach Erik Vogt said. “Yes, we do have some big names that get the ball the most, but the ultimate sign of a good team is that people step up when they need to. I can’t say enough about Regan Trueblood, Grace Brock, Megan Brock, Annie Obradovich, who really step up when no one would think anything else if they didn’t.”

Landfair led the attack with 11 kills, and both Landfair and sophomore Katie Shook had nine digs. Trueblood (three aces), Brock (one ace) and senior Kory Beard tallied two kills each.

Those statistics don’t tell the real story of how Central (25-12) won.

East (29-9) overall has a harder hitting team that blocks well and defends strongly. On the other hand, Central is a team, and they have been for years.

The Wildcats are led by a group of seniors who bought into the program early and now are leading their teammates. The Wildcats have a strong

mentality that, when they stay positive, they can hold onto a lead or come from behind to get the win.

“On our side, we were giving each other positive feedback and cheering each other on,” Landfair said. “We were not letting the fans get in our head, and we stayed encouraging each other. In practice, we usually cheer each other on, and that carries onto the game.”

Even though they lost, the Griffins played tough and should be recognized as being a team to beat in the future.

Hart was a huge presence at the net with six kills and five blocks. If the

Griffins passed more in system to use her, the outcome could have been different. Hackett had nine kills and two aces, while Lesiak added seven strong kills and three blocks. Kate Bruder led defensively with 12 digs.

The bright side: Hackett, Lesiak, Hart and Bruder are juniors.

“We wanted to set the bar high for this program and understand that, every year, we want to win regional titles and sectional titles,” East coach Kristopher Fiore said. “I thought the girls did a great job laying the groundwork for that. Especially at the beginning of both of those games, they had the momentum taken from us. I can’t really fault our girls. They battled their tail off until the very end. They fought hard and tried to execute the things we planned to.”

Seniors Mel Weller (11 digs), Madeline Morrow (13 assists) and Sarah Lewis (two kills) played well. East also will graduate Ally Carlson, Allie DeRubertis and Becca Lilley.

All of the seniors are happy with how successful they were despite the adversity they faced going into this year.

“We had an awesome season,” Weller said. “I couldn’t have asked for a better senior year playing with these girls and our coaching staff. The coaches did a great job of meshing two teams together to make us one. Unfortunately, we didn’t end how we would’ve liked to, but winning regionals was the highlight of the season.”

The Wildcats hope that their highlight is still to come. Central will see Minooka for the second time this season Thursday. The mindset for the finals: work hard.

“When we’re playing in the postseason, we know we could be playing our last game,” Trueblood said, “so it makes us more motivated and makes us work hard.”

“After the September call-ups this year, we had six in the major leagues,” Ozella noted. The others were White Sox pitcher James Shields, Pirates pitcher Tyler Glasnow, Giants catcher Trevor Brown and Rockies shortstop Pat Valaika.

Jim Ozella, the 58-year-old baseball coach at Hart High School in Newhall, California, in the Santa Clarita Valley, thought he was sitting through a routine faculty meeting last Wednesday.

“All of a sudden, our principal [Collyn Nielsen] says, ‘I know you’re all watching the World Series. We’d like to send our baseball coach to Game 3,’ ” related. “I was stunned.

“Dave and Mike Montgomery got me a ticket. I don’t know who paid for the plane flight – the principal won’t say.”

Game 3 last Friday, of course, was the first of three played at Wrigley Field. Cubs left-handed reliever Mike Montgomery and Cleveland Indians right-hander Trevor Bauer played for Ozella at Hart. Dave Montgomery, Dave’s dad, taught and coached basketball there, and Ozella is close with him and his wife, Jeanette.

Ozella, who grew up on the east side of Joliet and played baseball at Providence, graduating in 1976, said the Friday morning flight out of Los Angeles “was delayed two hours, and it was packed. There must have been about 20 people on there who were going to the game. They were nervous.”

When he finally arrived in Chicago, Ozella checked into a hotel and jumped on the Orange Line and then the Red Line, arriving at Wrigley Field a little more than an hour before the game. The crowd outside the park was so large that “I think it took another half-hour to get inside the stadium,” Ozella said.

“It was a great event even though the Cubs lost, 1-0. I got to see Mike pitch – he got a couple of outs – and I saw him after the game. I went out with Dave and Jeanette for an early breakfast after the game.

“I never had seen a World Series game at Wrigley Field. Of course, not many had.”

“I have had the opportunity to learn the game and learn coaching from lots of great baseball people, beginning with my dad,” he said.

For example, Joliet legend Tom Dedin.

“I had a nondescript playing career, though I guess I was relatively successful at Providence,” Ozella said. “I went to Lewis to play baseball, but had injuries. Tom Dedin had been my high school coach and moved to Lewis, and I was playing there for him.

“I went to talk to him one day about helping him out in some way if the injuries were going to keep me from continuing to play.”

When Dedin became the baseball coach at Illinois, Ozella transferred to the U of I (after two years at Lewis) and became an undergrad assistant coach for Dedin for three years. He recruited the Chicago area in the summers.

“My dad and my high school coaches all had a major impact on my life,” Ozella said. “And I was blessed to have another mentor besides my dad in Tom Coach has been blessed Ozella – whose late father, Frank Dedin. Meanwhile, Ozella’s proteges remember their Hart roots.

“We say the gate that’s in left field at our park is always open,” Ozella said.

“We have college kids and pro guys who came out of our program coming back here to work out. They’re great role models for our players.

“Bob Walk, the former major leaguer, is a Hart graduate. He won a World Series game years ago. James Shields was with the Royals in the World Series, but he didn’t get a win.”

After Ozella graduated from Illinois in 1981 with degrees in journalism and secondary education, he spent two years as head baseball coach at Danville Schlarman. He and his bride, Kate – they have been married for 34 years – then moved to California, where he spent 14 years as the baseball coach at Alemany, a Catholic high school in Mission Hills, followed by a four-year coaching stint at College of the Canyons, a junior college in Santa Clarita.

He landed the job at Hart, where he teaches U.S. history and Advanced Placement U.S. history, in 2000. He coached a team two years ago that finished second in the state in California’s largest division.

The Ozellas’ son, Ryan, played baseball at Hart. Their daughters, Lauren and Jessica, were swimmers.

“I love it here,” Ozella said. “I am blessed to have had quality players and quality people alongside me for all these years. It’s been a great run.”

A great run punctuated with a seat at the first World Series game at Wrigley Field since 1945, with two of his former players in uniform, one of whom pitched in relief for the Cubs on that unforgettable night.

The Cubs are far from finished.

They’re frothing.

Addison Russell hit a grand slam and tied a World Series record with six RBIs, and the Cubs took advantage of a huge early misplay in Cleveland’s outfield as the Cubs throttled the Indians, 9-3, Tuesday night in Game 6 to push this tense tug-of-war between baseball’s two longest title drought holders to the limit.

Game 7, it is. The biggest, most nerve-wracking day yet.

For one city, hysteria.

For the other, heartbreak.

Kris Bryant homered to spark a three-run first inning, Russell hit the first slam in the Series in 11 years and Jake Arrieta worked into the sixth as the Cubs, who came to Progressive Field one win from elimination, are now one victory from their first championship since 1908.

Indians ace Corey Kluber, dominant while winning Games 1 and 4, starts again on short rest Wednesday night at home against big league ERA leader Kyle Hendricks.

The NL champions, who also got a two-run homer from Anthony Rizzo, are trying to become the seventh team to rally from a 3-1 deficit and first to do it on the road since Willie Stargell and the Pittsburgh Pirates came back against Baltimore in 1979.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon didn’t take any chances despite a comfortable late lead, using atomic-armed Aroldis Chapman for one out in the seventh, the eighth and one batter in the ninth. The lefty will be on call for Game 7.

The Cubs, shut out twice earlier in this Series, brought their clubs to Cleveland.

They hammered Josh Tomlin, who couldn’t get out of the third inning and didn’t get any help from his outfield in the first. The right-hander, who was so effective in Game 3 at Wrigley Field, pitched on short rest for the second time

CHICAGO – Patrick Kane had a goal and two assists, and the Blackhawks beat the Calgary Flames, 5-1, Tuesday night for their third straight win.

Kane scored his third of the season on a dazzling play in the first, then set up Artem Anisimov’s tiebreaking power-play goal at 7:44 of the third. Anisimov extended his career-best point streak to eight games with his teambest seventh goal of the season.

With Sam Bennett in the penalty box for tripping, Kane made a perfect pass to Anisimov in front for the redirect. Tyler Motte added his third of the season on a nice rush, making it 3-1 at 12:44, and Kane assisted on Artemi Panarin’s sliding empty-netter with 3:01 left.

Corey Crawford finished with 33 saves after posting his first shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory Sunday over the Los Angeles Kings.

Michael Frolik scored a short-handed goal for Calgary, which beat the Hawks, 3-2, on Kris Versteeg’s goal in

the seventh round of a shootout Oct. 24.

The Hawks had a chance to add to their advantage when Calgary was whistled for too many men on the ice in the second, but Backlund made a great pass to Frolik for a tying tap-in goal at 7:06.

Beef, cheese, poblano and beer form addictive burger

By SARA MOULTON The Associated Press The ancestor of this recipe was a beloved burger on the menu of a bar where I was a cook back in my college days.

Working on a flattop grill (the same surface used in diners to cook hash browns), we’d top the burger with a special mix of veggies, top the veggies with a slice of American cheese, douse the whole concoction with beer, then cover it with a dome lid and steam the burger until the cheese melted.

It was addictive – and I don’t even like beer.

This recipe repurposes that burger with fresher ingredients and sharp cheddar. I call for ground chuck because it’s not too lean. The higher percentage of fat makes the burger juicier and more flavorful. Whenever you add fat to a recipe, it’s just going to taste better.

The poblanos are roasted for three reasons: to soften the chili’s texture, to make it easier to remove the tough peel and to develop a slight char taste.

I recommend roasting them under the broiler, but if you have gas burners,

you can place them right on top of a burner and char them over a low flame. If you want to skip this step to save time, you can swap in canned chilies instead.

These burgers need to be cooked on a burner on top of the stove – not on a grill. That’s so the juices that accumulate in the bottom of the skillet can be deglazed with beer and turned into a “sauce” to pour onto the burger at the end. If you’re a beer lover, choose a robust brand, which will amp up the burger’s flavor.

I can’t pretend this is a low-cal dish, but I do think it’s a justifiable (and delicious) fall indulgence.

Chili Cheeseburgers Steamed in Beer Start to finish: 1 hour (40 active) Servings: 6

1 large poblano (about 4 ounces) or one 4.5-ounce can chilies 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided plus extra oil for oiling the chili 2 cups sliced onion salt and black pepper ½ cup mayonnaise 1 teaspoon minced garlic

1½ tablespoons minced chipotle in adobo 1½ pounds ground chuck, divided into 6 patties (shape them so that all of them will fit into one large skillet without touching) 6 ounces sliced cheddar cheese ½ cup beer 6 toasted buns Preheat the broiler. Lightly oil the chili on all sides and set it on a shelf about 4 inches from the heat source. Using tongs, turn the poblano often, until the skin is blackened on all sides, about 10 to 15 minutes.

Transfer the chili to a bowl, cover tightly with plastic wrap, and set it aside until it is cool enough to handle. When the chili is cool, peel and seed it and cut it into thin strips: put it back in the bowl.

In a large skillet cook the onion in 1 tablespoon of the oil, over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the onion is golden brown, about 8 to 10 minutes. Add the cooked onion to the bowl with the chili and add salt and pepper to taste. Wipe out the skillet and set it aside.

In a small bowl stir together the mayonnaise, garlic and chipotle.

In the skillet, heat the remaining oil over medium high heat. Season the burgers on

both sides with salt and pepper and add them to the skillet. Reduce the heat to medium and cook them for 2 minutes a side.

Transfer the burgers to a plate and pour off all but 2 tablespoons of the fat from the pan.

Return the burgers to the pan and top each burger with one-sixth of the chili mixture, followed by a slice of cheese.

Pour the beer into the pan on top of the burgers and cover the pan with a lid. Reduce the heat to a simmer and let the burgers steam for 2 minutes or until the cheese is melted and the burgers are cooked to the desired degree of doneness (you can nick and peek inside one).

While the burgers are cooking, spread chipotle mayonnaise onto the bottom and top of each bun. Transfer the cooked cheeseburgers to the bottom half of the buns. Turn up the heat in the skillet and boil the liquid until it thickened.

Spoon some of the reduced cooking liquid over each burger. Top with the remaining bun half.

Nutrition information per serving: 558 calories; 317 calories from fat; 35 g fat (11 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 96 mg cholesterol; 828 mg sodium; 27 g carbohydrate; 2 g fiber; 5 g sugar; 34 g protein.

32 Narrowed vessels cause intestinal angina Dear Dr. K: For months I’ve experienced severe pain in my abdomen after eating. After excluding a number of other conditions, my doctor diagnosed intestinal angina. I’ve heard of angina related to the heart – is this the same?

Dear Reader: The underlying process is the same for intestinal and cardiac angina.

Let me explain.

Cholesterol-filled plaque and clots can lurk in blood vessels throughout the body.

The arteries that supply the heart are by far the most common hiding place. But arteries elsewhere in the body also can become severely narrowed by plaque.

Clogged vessels in the legs or arms can lead to limb pain during exercise, because the nearby muscles don’t get enough blood to work properly. This is called peripheral artery disease, or PAD. People with PAD also are at risk for narrowing in the arteries that feed the intestines.

Your digestive system ordinarily gets about 20 to 25 percent of the blood pumped out by your heart. After you eat, blood flow to the stomach and intestines almost doubles. But if plaque causes severe narrowing, not enough of that extra blood reaches the intestines when they’re working to digest food. People usually don’t develop symptoms unless at least two of the three major arteries to the bowel are involved.

These narrowed vessels cause intestinal angina. The classic symptom is pain in the abdomen, just above the navel, that occurs about 30 minutes after eating. This pain happens every time you eat, not just some of the time. People often describe the pain as an aching sensation that lasts from one to two hours. Other possible symptoms include diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Intestinal angina symptoms are so unpleasant people with this condition often are afraid to eat.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Treating intestinal angina means restoring blood flow to the intestines. In most cases, doctors thread a catheter (a thin plastic tube) through several arteries until the tip of the catheter is at the site of the blockage.

Then they insert a tiny metal mesh tube (stent) to prop open the artery. (This is very similar to the procedure performed to treat narrowed coronary arteries.) But just like stented coronary arteries, intestinal arteries are prone to re-narrowing. Some people with more advanced disease need surgery.

In rare cases, a blood clot may completely block an intestinal artery. This causes intense abdominal pain that can last for several hours. A complete blockage requires emergency surgery. Otherwise, the part of the intestine that is downstream from the blockage begins to die. If it is not promptly corrected, the condition often is fatal. The parallels to angina of the heart and a full heart attack are clear.

A doctor colleague of mine began to experience abdominal pain after every meal.

At first, he thought it was heartburn. But he began to wonder if it was intestinal angina.

Then one night he was awakened by more severe pain in the same part of his abdomen.

He hadn’t eaten in seven hours. Fortunately, he realized what was happening, went to the emergency room and then promptly to surgery. They removed a part of his intestine that had died and saved his life.

The woman you saw could have been homeless, drug-addicted, short on money or mentally ill. She also could have fled an abusive husband or partner. That’s why it’s inappropriate to scold or lecture a panhandler.

If you had said anything at all, you might have offered there are dozens of shelters and organizations in Irvine that help the unfortunate, and if she reached out to them, she might find the help she needs to get settled and find a job.

Dear Abby: My 6-year-old grandson, “Joey,” is the light of my life. He’s outgoing, compassionate, smart and fun. The “problem” is, he prefers girl things to boy things, and has since he was old enough to express his wants. Fashion, makeup, hairstyles – he is the expert. His parents grumble, but realize he can be who he is and be happy, or they can try to change him and he will turn out to be neurotic.

I went to the market the other day, and there was a woman sitting on the sidewalk with two children – a boy who looked to be about 6 and a girl about 2. She was holding a sign asking for help ($). I wanted so badly to say something to her about what a poor example she was setting for her children by begging. It made me angry because I imagine she’s using her children as “props” to evoke sympathy.

This is a nice area. I would think she could better present herself to her children by looking for a job. These days, every bridge player tries to find a reason, however thin, not to pass. Occasionally, though, a pass passes on valuable information -- as in this deal. How should South play in four hearts? West leads the diamond 10. East wins the first trick with his queen, cashes the diamond ace, and shifts to the club two. (What was East’s stronger defense?)

In the auction, North’s two-notrump response was the Jacoby Forcing Raise: four-plus trumps, at least game-forcing values and, usually, no singleton or void. (Otherwise, he would have made a splinter bid.)

South, with a minimum and no shortage either, jumped to four hearts.

South has to play the trump suit without loss. This would normally involve taking a finesse. A priori, the chance that East has the king is 50 percent and West a singleton king only about 6.25 percent. But sometimes those numbers are worthless.

South would like to know who holds the spade ace. He should lead a spade, taking a slight risk that East will get a club ruff. Here, East produces the ace. Then South should know that West must have the heart king. If East had that card -- and a total of 13 high-card points -- he would have opened the bidding. Declarer should play a heart to his ace.

East would have done better to shift to a trump at trick three, before South could find out who had the spade ace. Then surely declarer would have gone with the odds and taken the finesse.

(Published in the Herald-News LEGAL NOTICE October 19, 26, 2016 November CITY OF JOLIET 2, 2016) 1234786 ADVERTISEMENT TO BIDS CONTRACT NO. 2211-1216 PROJECT NAME: WELL 20D REHABILITATION - 2016; JOLIET, IL The City of Joliet, Illinois, does hereby invite sealed bids for the Well 20D Rehabilitation project, Joliet, Illinois.

Bids will be received at the Office of the City Clerk, City of Joliet Municipal Building, at 150 West Jefferson Street, Joliet, Illinois 60432-4156 until 9:40 A.M. local time on, November 17, 2016, at which time they will be opened and publicly read aloud.

Those desiring to submit a bid may examine the bid documents and detailed specifications at the City of Joliet Purchasing Division, 150 W. Jefferson St., Joliet, IL 60432 between the hours of 8:00 A.M. and 4:30 P.M., Monday through Friday. Electronic copies can be downloaded free of charge at http://www.cityofjoliet.info/bids-proposals. All bidders will be required to submit Bid Security in the form of a Certified Check, Cashier's Check or a Bid Bond in the amount of Ten percent (10%) of the Base Bid, payable to the City of Joliet.

The City of Joliet has a local qualified bidder ordinance that would apply to this contract. To apply to be a local qualified bidder please go to http://www.cityofjoliet.info/departments/finance/purchasing/ prequalification-process.

Addendums will also be posted on the City of Joliet's website at http://www.cityofjoliet.info/ bids-proposals. The potential vendor/contractor remains responsible for obtaining all addenda to the original specification so they should check the specific bid page before submitting a bid to make sure they have received all addendums to a specific contract.

The successful bidder will be required to post performance Security and to provide a Certificate of Insurance as set forth in the Invitation of Bid and the General Terms & Conditions.

Bidders must be prequalified with the City of Joliet to bid this project pursuant to Ordinance 7345. A bidder shall become prequalified in one of the following ways: 1) If a company is currently prequalified by the State of Illinois (via IDOT or the Capital Development Board), such person shall submit a copy of said prequalification to Office of the City Clerk prior to the date and time set for the bid opening.

2) If a company is not State of Illinois prequalified as described above, they shall submit a City of Joliet Prequalification Form and a financial statement. The financial prequalification forms can be obtained from the City of Joliet website at http://www.cityofjoliet.info/ departments/finance/purchasing/prequalification-process.

This prequalification MUST be renewed yearly. The current price for City of Joliet prequalification is $175, which offsets the costs for independent auditor review of the documents. Those documents are to be submitted to City Clerk's Office, City of Joliet, 150 W. Jefferson Street, Joliet, IL 60432, at least 6 days prior to the bid opening and must be accompanied by $175 and need to be updated annually. In addition to the form being submitted, a financial statement prepared or certified by a duly certified public accountant should be also submitted. The certified public accountant shall also certify that he/she is presently a duly certified public accountant in the state in which he/she is certified.

This financial statement must include the company's latest balance sheet and income statement showing the following items: Current Assets (e.g., cash joint venture accounts, accounts receivable, notes receivable, accrued income, deposits, materials inventory, and prepaid expenses). The evaluation of the independent auditor shall determine the amount of prequalification. Prequalification shall be valid for a period of twelve (12) calendar months following the date of verification by the independent auditors.

3) Bids from bidders who have not submitted required prequalification documents as required in subsection (1) or (2) above shall not be opened.

The City of Joliet reserves the right to reject any and all bids, parts of any and all bids, or to waive technical errors or omissions in bids.

The Contract shall be subject to the provisions of the Prevailing Wage Act (820 ILCS 130/1 et seq.) to the extent required by law.
