PLAINFIELD, SHOREWOOD CHAMBERS TO MERGE The two chambers will join together to create a new entity.
T
he Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce and the Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce are combining forces and names. The new entity will be called the Plainfield Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce. (PSACC). The merger will take effect April 1.
A steering committee composed of board members from both of the chambers have worked together over the last few months developing a plan to ensure a smooth transition. “Our current Director recently retired” said Adam Underhill, Board President for the Shorewood Chamber of Commerce. “The timing felt right to make a move. We share a lot of the same members and have worked closely with the Plainfield Chamber for years.” The Shorewood Chamber plans to dissolve their organization
making Tasha Marsaglia, the current Executive Director for Plainfield, head of the new organization. “Since our current Board of Directors has already been elected for 2021 we will add 4 Directors from Shorewood to help make the transition as smooth as possible.” said Tasha Marsaglia, Executive Director of the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce. The main office will be located in Downtown Plainfield but the new organization intends to maintain a presence in Shorewood. In addition, we will continue on with the events and committees that make each Chamber unique. “I am excited about the opportunities that this alliance will bring to our Members" said Marsaglia. “The growth of core events like Crossroads Fest and the Harvest 5K is something for our members to be excited about.” The PSACC will bring increased support for all members, including a full calendar of events in both communities, increased marketing exposures and a larger client base. "From the moment I approached Plainfield to start discussions on uniting the business communities of both these great Chambers, the focus and outcome has been, this is good for business," said Underhill. “This is a win-win for all involved.”

We are working to preserve the free and competitive enterprise system, promote growth and development, and make the Plainfield Shorewood area a better place to live, work, worship, learn and conduct business. At the end of 2020, the Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce was approached by the Shorewood Area Chamber about merging and becoming one organization. With this merge it will give our local businesses, members, and organizations in the area more opportunities to Network within and gain support from the local communities. We are extremely excited about this opportunity.
The strengths and successes of this organization come from individuals within our membership who volunteer their talents and expertise to rally forces to meet daily challenges. The work and rewards of the chamber agenda are not limited to the board of directors and office staff. Business representatives and employees can share the goodwill and excitement of the regular and special events sponsored by the chamber. Networking and showcasing your business to fellow members and the public are advantages of membership, as is your participation in events, like our Golf Outing, the Community Expo, Greeter Program, seminars and workshops, monthly luncheons, and Chamber Network Nights. The main chamber office is located right in downtown Plainfield and is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, and we now have a satellite office at the Shorewood Village Hall. Our staff is always ready to help anyone who walks in the door or calls. Our staff consists of: Vitella Barnes our executive assistant and, myself, Tasha Marsaglia, the executive director. Our goal is to help you know the ins and outs of our chamber and get you noticed by the public and other businesses. Our slogan is “Always Shop Chamber First”. The Plainfield Shorewood Area Chamber of Commerce is strong, viable, and proud to be your voice in the community. Since 1972, we have been making a difference. LONGTIME PLAINFIELD AND SHOREWOOD LEADERS STEP DOWN AFTER 20 YEARS By Chris Walker
M
ike Collins is probably going fishing. Perhaps he’ll chase the white ball around on the links. Maybe he’ll pursue a new adventure. If nothing else, he’s free on Mondays now.
Collins, a lifelong Plainfield resident, has served three consecutive terms as village president of the village, but did not run for reelection in 2021. “I’ll have my Mondays now, and I haven’t had that for 20 years,” he said. “It’s just time to take a break and step down. I’ve been with the village for 20 years, so it’s time for others to get into the position and see if they can carry on what the trustees and staff has done.” As the oldest of nine children, Collins can remember growing up in a town of farmland and not even 2,000 people.
“Well, the prediction for Plainfield is now upwards of 100,000 people,” he said. “We currently have a sewer system that can handle up to 75,000 people in two counties. And we’re negotiating to keep moving west into Kendall County and adjoining into Oswego as the years go by.” Collins served in the U.S. Air Force from 1964 to 1968 and as a Plainfield police officer from 1968 to 1969 before working for the Illinois State Police from 1969 to 1998. As mayor, there were numerous infrastructure and traffic improvements made in town on his watch. He also worked on economic development, including the creation of the Village’s Economic Development Advisory Task Force and Business Evolution Center, intergovernmental agreements and a commitment to preserving the historic downtown area. “I’m thankful for all the voters and people who put me in this position for this long,” he said. “I hope I haven’t disappointed too many and helped many more.” He knows he’ll miss the people. “I can’t say enough about the people,” he said. “We have a wonderful staff. I can’t say enough about them. They’ve been wonderful to me.” In nearby Shorewood, longtime Mayor Rick Chapman also did not seek reelection for another four-year term in April. "This decision did not come easy because the Village of Shorewood has and will always be embedded deep within me,” said Chapman, a resident of Shorewood for 45 years. “I appreciate your support over the past 20 years and want to thank you for keeping me in a position to serve you.” Chapman has decided to stay involved directly, though, as he intended on running for a village trustee position, which is where he first served Shorewood, offering eight years to the village board while chairing a number of committees.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT FLOURISHING DESPITE PANDEMIC By Diane Krieger Spivak
E
conomic development in the Plainfield/Shorewood area is taking off this spring, in spite of a year of lockdowns and quarantines due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “We’ve been pretty fortunate,” said Plainfield Economic Development Manager Jake Melrose, noting that the village is making strides across the board, in infrastructure, industrial, business and residential development.
The Boulevard Place, a commercial development at U.S. 30 and I-55, includes over 150 acres, 70 of which will front U.S. 30. Lead site Costco opened in November. Post-COVID on-holds, “a lot” of restaurants are showing renewed interest, and a strip center is on the books, Melrose said. “That’s going to be one of our bigger projects. We’re excited about it. A car wash and outlot developments are underway nearby.” Rod Baker Ford will relocate its dealership toward Meijer, doubling its size to 60,000 square feet on 12 acres. Aldi is relocating to a brand new building in Prairie Creek, and there’s interest in new multifamily developments to the rear on the river. A 250,000-square-foot maintenance facility will extend roadway and utilities, creating more development opportunities. “It’s a good win for the village,” Melrose said.

Additionally, Perlow Steel is relocating to Plainfield in a 60,000-square-foot facility. Diageo Canning is extending its canning lines in a $59 million project, bringing more employment opportunities. “We’ve got a lot of good smaller projects starting up, too,” Melrose said. Those include a new Belle Tire going in near McDonalds’ on Industrial Drive, plus two new outlots. A new 15,000-square-foot Plainfield Emergency Management Agency building will go up due to a public/private partnership, as well. A large number of new businesses are looking to locate in Plainfield, and residentially, the village saw more than 250 new home starts in 2020, “And we’re way above that this year,” Melrose added. The Village of Shorewood is also seeing an uptick in development. “Despite everything that happened in the last year, our economy is stable, and really strengthening,” said Shorewood Economic Development Director Kelley Chrisse. “We have a great mix of businesses. Some are struggling due to the pandemic and others have been strengthened, but spring is shaping up to look quite busy.” Chrisse noted there has been increased interest in redevelopment and investment. The 80-room LaQuinta Inn and Suites located at the I-55 and US 52 interchange
is slated to open in the next month or so with a proposed buffet restaurant nearby. Shorewood Salon Suites will locate in a former Coldwell Banker building on US 52 (Jefferson Street), and Mauve Nosh & Libations will also locate on Jefferson. “In residential development we have limited infill lots available, but we have builders buying up lots not constructed on yet,” said Chrisse, who notes that there’s also increased interest by multifamily developers. Major infrastructure improvements, mostly driven by IDOT, are also slated, including a divergent diamond interchange at Route 59 and I-55. “The other major project that is going to affect many people traveling through Shorewood and residents of Shorewood is the planned improvements to U.S. 52 from River Road on the west into Joliet to Houbolt Road,” Chrisse said. A few of the new businesses that have opened in Shorewood during the pandemic include the newly constructed Aldi, Marshalls, Smoothie King, Hand and Stone Massage and Spa, Redwing Shoes, uBreakiFix, The Learning Experience and Westside Children’s Therapy all on Route 59 as well as the newly constructed indoor baseball training facility for Rhino Baseball and GPS Training on Gregory Court.
