hat’s exactly what the local businesses of New Lenox have had to do in the wake of COVID-19.

“It’s something no one has embarked on before and no one wants to ever again,” says Emily Johnson, CEO of the New Lenox Chamber of Commerce, which represents approximately 320 local businesses. “We are all aware that the beginning of 2021 is going to be a challenge. We really don’t want people to come and go and have empty storefronts. I don’t want businesses to be surviving – I want them to be thriving.”

While a handful of businesses have shut down due to the pandemic, Johnson notes that they’ve also had a number of new businesses open.

“We’ve been really trying to encourage the local community to focus their efforts on shopping and dining locally,” Johnson says. “Their business’ success

is your success. Having a successful town impacts all things. Property taxes, the education system - all those things are closely tied.”

Jackie Potocki, owner of Ranch Frostie with her fiance John Sestak, is a local that has seen firsthand the power of keeping things local.

“When I moved out here in the 70s, I would always ride my bike to Frosties,” Potocki says. “When it was listed for sale, we didn’t want to see it go and we felt drawn to making sure that it stayed as-is. We’re very lucky to carry the tradition on.”

Potocki has owned Frosties for several years now and like all New Lenox businesses, was faced with some uncertainties once COVID-19 began wreaking havoc in the spring.

“It’s been a really hard year,” Potocki says. “When you’re a local business, you’re spending your money. It’s your investment in yourself. We have no control over what we’ve been up against this last year.”

Ranch Frosties was permitted to stay open due to its carryout business model, but with restrictions. They limited employees in the building, remastered their food delivery, added hand sanitizer and required masks and gloves for workers.

“Frosties is associated with spring and summer,” Potocki says, noting that many people brought their own tailgate setups and hung out safely in the parking lot this year. “It became the little family place where you could go to feel normal when things definitely weren’t normal.”

Unlike Frosties, many shops and restaurants had to start from scratch to implement online shopping or ordering platforms to keep their business aflot. Social media also became an important form of communication and connection.

“People had to figure out how to build that following and engage people on a regular basis,” Johnson says. “If they’re not shopping with you, you want them still feeling connected and that they want to support you.”

Potocki says they saw an unprecedented amount of kindness and support from her customers in 2020.

“I can’t even tell you how many people would pay for someone’s ice cream cones,” she says. “Everyone’s gestures were 100% stepped up. Everyone is looking out for each other.”

While monetary gestures are always nice, supporting small business doesn’t necessarily mean spending cash.

“There are so many ways you can support a small business,” Johnson says. “You can share their post, buy a gift card or leave a review.”

Even the smallest gestures are noticed and make a difference towards the future of New Lenox and its local business owners.

“Our community has really stepped up and helped support these businesses,” Johnson says. “If we’re not supporting them now, they won’t be here in the next couple of years.

hether preschool, primary school, high school, college or beyond, the New Lenox area boasts an array of public and private educational options for parents and students seeking to help young lives start strong, and continue to grow. Public school students from New Lenox attend the New Lenox or Union elementary school districts and the three Lincoln-Way high schools in New Lenox and Frankfort. The village is also home to Providence Catholic High School and St. Jude’s school.

LINCOLN-WAY COMMUNITY DISTRICT 210

More than 6,900 students now call the three comprehensive high schools of Lincoln-Way Community District 210 home.

Headquartered in New Lenox, District 210 serves families and taxpayers in a 105-square-mile area, including five elementary school districts in in east central Will County in New Lenox and the communities of Frankfort, Mokena, Manhattan and

portions of Tinley Park and Orland Park.

District 210’s campuses include LincolnWay Central and Lincoln-Way West high schools, both in New Lenox; and LincolnWay East, in Frankfort.

The Lincoln-Way schools are renowned in Illinois for student achievement, in academics, athletics and other extracurricular pursuits, both in high school and beyond.

All three high schools are rated as “exemplary” by the Illinois State Board of Educa-

tion, ranking in the Top 10% of high schools in the state.

The district boasts a 96% graduation rate, and 85% of Lincoln-Way high school graduates enroll in college within 16 months of graduation. In 2019, 462 Lincoln-Way seniors received more than $914,000 in college scholarships. More than half of Lincoln-Way students are involved in early college coursework, earning college credit before graduating high school.

More than 1,900 Lincoln-Way students are enrolled in Advanced Placement classes, as the district has enjoyed a 43% growth in the number of AP Exams taken since 2015.

Students have parlayed success in the AP programs into $5 million in college tuition savings.

Outside the classroom, 80% of Lincoln-Way students are involved in a sport or any of 70 extracurricular activities offered at the high schools.

In 2019, the Lincoln-Way Marching Band participated in the Parade of Roses in Pasadena, Calif., while Lincoln-Way East athletes won the 2019 IHSA Football Class 8A state championship. The 2020 Cheerleading state championship.

NEW LENOX SCHOOL DISTRICT 122

The New Lenox School District 122 exists to partner with the New Lenox community to promote academic excellence, inspiring children to take pride in themselves, their community and their country, now and in the future.

The district is home to 5,400 New Lenox area students, in preschool through eighth grade, at the district’s two junior high schools, four intermediate schools, four primary schools, kindergarten and preschool.

In the past nine years, 85% of New Lenox elementary and middle school students have consistently met or exceeded Illinois state learning standards, thanks to District 122’s commitment to a rigorous curriculum, emphasizing reading, writing and mathematics, while also encouraging the development of art, music and technology skills.

District 122’s performance has helped New Lenox schools to continue to receive the Bright Star Ward from Kansas City-based SchoolSearch for each of the past 12 years.

The Bright Star Award recognizes school districts that help students achieve the highest academic performance, at the lowest cost. District 122 was one of 80 of Illinois’ 872 school districts to receive the award.

Outside the classroom, PCHS students are invited to participate in comprehensive extracurricular activities, including top-flight athletic programs.

Recent PCHS graduates have received nearly $30 million in scholarships, while performing more than 100,000 hours of community service while attending PCHS.

New Lenox’s Parent Teacher Organization helps provide the community’s schools with technological tools to promote learning, including laptops and tablets, as well as recess equipment, among other gifts.

On the playing fields, PCHS teams have collected 30 Illinois state championships, the most among Illinois private schools.

District 122 also partners with the New Lenox Park District and local athletic associations to provide recreational opportunities to members of the New Lenox community.

he New Lenox Public Library, 120 Veterans Pkwy., New Lenox, is home to more than 130,000 books, over 90 magazine titles, more than 13,000 DVDs and 4,000 music CDs. Patrons also have access to digital books and magazines for all audiences and a circulating Tech2Go collection, along with a variety of other items, services and programs.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has proven challenging, the library was excited to reopen its building’s vast collection for browsing and computer use on Jan. 18, 2021.
