essica Noble felt so good after spinal fusion surgery in July, she attended her cousin’s bachelorette celebration just two weeks later!

The group offers eight medical oncologists, as well as two radiation oncologists. Gustafson said the practice has a goal to see the patient within 24 hours of appointment request, and, due to the large number of physicians, this goal has become a reality.

During the appointment, the patient will have the opportunity to see the medical oncologist, surgeon and radiation oncologist in one visit, instead of multiple visits, which sometimes takes months to plan.

“The universities are doing a combined modality conference with patients, and this is what we do at the Women’s Center. The cancer patient does not want to wait; it’s a big bonus for (them),” Gustafson said.

The eight physicians have over 150 years of combined experience, but value continued education. Once a month, medical professionals from universities all over the country meet with the JOHA doctors and give a lecture on their expertise and latest treatments.

“We also send cases to them and get opinions from across the country,” Gustafson said.

Gustafson said JOHA physicians work together for the care of the patients. They bounce ideas off of one another, match physicians and patients to find the perfect fit, and refer patients for second opinions at the patients' requests.

“We are honest and send the patient where they can be best served, but 99 percent of the patients can be treated here,” Gustafson said.

Strategies that can help build strong immune systems A strong immune system can go a long way toward ensuring one’s overall health. But bolstering one’s immune system is no small task, as even medical researchers admit there is still much to learn about the links between lifestyle and immune function.

The Harvard Medical School notes that a strongly functioning immune system requires balance and harmony. So it stands to reason that a highly unhealthy lifestyle will compromise the immune system, but it’s also worth noting that pushing the body too hard in the other direction also can adversely affect immune function.

Researchers continue to study the potential links between immune response and variables such as diet, exercise, age, and psychological stress. Though studies are ongoing, the Harvard Medical School notes that the immune system is bolstered by various strategies associated with healthy living.

• DON’T SMOKE. Smoking is linked to a host of diseases and ailments, so it’s no surprise that it also compromises the immune system. The National Cancer Institute notes that cigarette smoke contains high levels of tar and other chemicals, which compromise the immune system’s ability to effectively combat infections. The effects of smoking on the immune system are both immediate and long-term. Smokers’ immune systems may not be able to fend off common infections like the common cold as effectively as the immune systems of nonsmokers. And over time, as smokers keep smoking, their immune systems will continue to weaken, which the NCI says makes them more vulnerable to autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.

• EAT A HEALTHY DIET. There is no magical food or foods that can strengthen the immune system to a point where infection is impossible. However, the Cleveland Clinic notes that a balanced, healthy diet that includes a mix of vitamins and minerals plays a role in strengthening the immune system. Fresh fruits and vegetables contain a bevy of vitamins and antioxidants that help the immune system fight off potential infections. Many people bemoan the absence of fresh fruits and vegetables at their local grocery stores during certain times of the year. But the Cleveland Clinic notes that manufacturers typically free frozen fruits and vegetables at peak ripeness. That means frozen fruits and vegetables provide similar nutrition to fresh fruits and vegetables during those times of year when foods are not in-season.

• EXERCISE REGULARLY. Like a healthy diet, routine exercise provides a host of benefits, and one such benefit is its impact on the immune systems. The U.S. National Library of Medicine notes that the precise relationship between exercise and immune system function remains a mystery. Some researchers suspect that physical activity may flush bacteria out of the lungs and airways, reducing one’s risk of getting a cold, flu or other illness. Another theory suggests that exercises causes changes in white blood cells, which the immune system uses to fight disease. These exercise-related changes may make it possible for the cells to detect illnesses earlier than they would if the body was not exercised regularly. While it’s important to note that these are just theories, the Harvard Medical School suggests that it’s reasonable to consider moderate regular exercise an important component of a healthy, immune-boosting lifestyle.

• DON’T BUY THE HYPE. Men and women interested in boosting their immune systems will no doubt find many products claiming to do just that. The Harvard Medical School urges consumers to be skeptical of such products, many of which make dubious claims that are not rooted in recognized scientific research.

The immune system remains a mystery in many ways. But several healthy strategies may help people bolster their immune systems and potentially reduce their risk of infection.

Breast reconstruction is a special type of surgery to rebuild the shape and look of the breast, typically after breast cancer surgery such as mastectomy.

When considering breast reconstruction, there are many reasons why a woman might choose this option: to make her chest looked balanced when she’s wearing a bra or swimsuit, to permanently regain her breast shape, so she won’t have to use a breast form that fits inside the bra (an external prosthesis); or lastly to be happier with her body and how she feels about herself.

“Just as we have seen improvements in diagnosis and treatment, so too has our ability to create stable and cosmetically pleasing results been enhanced to higher and higher levels, even in very difficult circumstances” he added.

For patients who have already undergone breast conservation therapy and

now have deformity of their breast, surgical options are available. “The ideal method for reconstructing these patients, known as flap reconstruction, involves transferring tissue into the defect that has not been subject to the effects of radiation. The transfer of non-radiated tissue into a deformed breast is a powerful tool that can restore an aesthetically pleasing shape while improving the feel and sometimes pain associated with a severe deformity."

Dr. Chen completed his Bachelor of Arts degree and graduated Cum Laude from Cornell University. He received his Medical Degree with honors from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. Dr. Chen completed a General Surgery Residency at Harvard Medical School at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

During this training, Dr. Chen also completed a two-year surgical research fellowship at the Yale University School of Medicine in the Division of Vascular Surgery.

Following his general surgery training, Dr. Chen then completed a Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, recognized as having one of the best Plastic Surgery Residency programs in the nation.

After his training in Plastic Surgery, Dr. Chen stayed at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and took an additional year in Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery Fellowship in the Department of Orthopedics.

After several months of physical therapy with Morris Hospital, Sharon Donahue of Morris has transitioned to the Morris YMCA and continues to make great progress.

Last February, Donahue began working with Morris Hospital physical therapist Elaine Gengenbacher to overcome extreme weakness due to muscular atrophy in her legs resulting from surgery.

“I couldn’t find my legs or my feet, and I couldn’t walk,” she says. “I couldn’t even sit up. I didn’t have any balance.”

In order to walk again, Donahue’s muscles needed to be retrained and strengthened. Physical therapy sessions held three times a week at Morris Hospital’s Diagnostic & Rehabilitative Center included work on the parallel bars and stationary bicycle, mat exercises, squats, lateral walking and sit-to-stand exercises. In addition to Gengenbacher, Donahue had the opportunity to work with Morris Hospital physical therapists Ryan Bechtel and Shannon Gambon and physical therapy assistant Belinda Hill.

“We worked on my core, we worked on my back, we worked on every muscle I had and some I didn’t know I had,” Donahue says with a laugh.

When Donahue’s muscles were ready, she was able to focus on walking. A celebrated milestone occurred when she was able to

“Julian used to have to wheel me in in a wheelchair,” she says. “Now Today, Donahue has made the transition to one physical therapy session a week, which she supplements with exercise done at home and the Morris YMCA, along with water therapy in a friend’s pool.

She says she looks forward to the day she can walk unassisted and stand long enough to cut fabric and help her husband in the kitchen.

She even looks forward to doing laundry again. Bowling, serving in her church and returning to volunteering with the Morris Hospital Patient Transportation program with her husband are also much anticipated goals.

“I’m just a work in progress,” she says, “but I have faith I’ll get there.”
