Firefighters respond to blaze on Broadway Street in Coal City

mmallory@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Richard Dean returned Tuesday to his Coal City apartment after running errands to the post office and grocery store to find flames atop the building and the front door already open.

“I dropped my 12-pack of Mountain Dew, ran in and got my dog,” Dean said.

“When I touched my apartment door, it was already hot. I opened it and my dog ran out. I had to get her.”

Coal City Fire Protection District firefighters were dispatched about 11:09 a.m.

Tuesday to 35 S. Broadway St. for a report of a fire, Lt. Nick Doerfler said. More than 10 agencies wound up responding to assist, and first responders were expected to be at the scene until 6 p.m. Tuesday.

The building where the fire occurred houses a hair salon, pool supply store and some vacant spaces on the ground floor, with apartments on the second floor, Doerfler said. It was occupied when the

blaze began on the second floor near the front of the structure.

Doerfler said there were three people treated on scene for minor injuries. Although it’s suspected the flames did not reach the first floor, Doerfler said, smoke and water left the entire building with extensive damage.

Fighting the fire consumed most of Coal City’s water supply, Doerfler said, so agencies tapped into Braidwood’s supply through a well. The well water did not enter Coal City’s regular water supply.

“Anytime there’s a large fire like this, we don’t want to completely deplete the water supply,” Doerfler said. “So we tap into other resources.”

Dean, who lived in Apartment 2 of the six-apartment building, said the fire started in Apartment 1 at the front of the building and spread to the back. Dean said his neighbors in Apartment 1 told him they heard a “boom” and suddenly there was a fire. Dean said the building is outdated and his neighbors believe the explosion came from a furnace.

Lil Bit, Dean’s 8-year-old pit bull, was at a friend’s house as of 2 p.m. while Dean tried to figure out where to stay for the night. Apartment 1’s residents also escaped with their pit bull.

McDonald’s, which is across the street from the fire, handed out lunch to firefighters about 2:15 p.m. Jeff and Naomi Howard, of Morris, were two of many to watch the blaze from a safe distance.

“Everybody got out, thank God for that,” Naomi Howard said.

The response to the fire led to portions of Broadway and Division streets being closed for much of the day. Doerfler said the cause of the fire is under investigation and likely will remain so for several weeks.

Joliet locks in current health plan until 2030

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – City workers won’t see any hikes in health care costs until at least 2030 under contract terms approved by the City Council on Tuesday.

They also will not get a raise this year or next, which most council members said was a fair trade-off for the long-term guarantee on the health care plan for both active city workers and retirees.

Other provisions in the master agreement for the city’s six unions are a guarantee of no layoffs for most workers during the course of the contract and a provision that future hires will have to move into Joliet.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said the residency requirement was essential because most new hires were no longer moving into Joliet.

“In my opinion, we had to stop the bleeding,” O’Dekirk said.

O’Dekirk called the long-term guarantee on health care “a risk on our end. But I think it was important to secure the two years of no raises. In the last five years, city employees have taken no raises in four of those years.

I don’t know of any other jurisdiction where that’s happened.”

The four-year agreement through 2019 includes 2 percent raises in the final two years.

The council voted 6-1 with one member abstaining for the master agreement. Final terms of the contracts still need to be negotiated, but the unions already have ratified the terms in the master agreement.

Pat Mudron, an insurance agent, was the lone no vote.

“Based on my profession, health is a serious consideration for me, and I

Jan Quillman abstained, saying she was advised to do so because she could indirectly benefit from the agreement.

Quillman’s husband is a retired Joliet police officer.

The agreement was criticized by John Sheridan, president of the Cunningham Neighborhood Council.

Noting that the city workers al-

ready pay a below-average insurance premium of $100 a month, Sheridan said, “To lock that premium in until 2030 is absurd. It’s never been done. I think it’s going to be a mistake for the city to do that.”

Councilman John Gerl said the pay freezes amount to $1.6 million a year in savings.

“That’s a savings that will go into perpetuity,” Gerl said, adding that the city was able to end 2015 with a surplus thanks in large part to past pay freezes.

The agreement also has a provision saying the city will not outsource work that would lead to layoffs through 2019, while including two exceptions. The provision does not apply to current negotiations to privatize downtown parking operations. It also would not apply to the firefighters and fire officers’ contracts.

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Tony Roddy taught youths at the Boys & Girls Club of Joliet the keys to success he used in his roughly 3,000-mile walk across the U.S. Roddy, a former Joliet resident, told a room of close to 20 teens at the local agency they needed curiosity, social intelligence, optimism, self-control, grit, zest and other qualities to succeed in life.

He made use of each as he completed last year his walk across the U.S. to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. His journey began in Maine and ended in California.

“It takes more than just muscle to walk. It takes a lot of brainpower,” he said. “If you don’t have brainpower to walk, you can have the muscles of Samson but you’re still not going to make it. You got to have your mind conditioned to do it because sometimes you have close calls and I had a lot of close calls.”

In his journey, he recalled in his trip through 13 states of walking through days of nonstop rain in Ohio, a cold but beautiful night in Arizona and resting in tents, hotels and a cemetery.

In one story Roddy told the teens, he said he told his uncle 15 years ago he wanted to walk across the U.S., something he said with zest and enthusiasm.

One part of his journey that tested his perseverance – or grit – was a midnight walk in Arizona, where the tem-

perature was a frosty 19 degrees and he had to push his gathering of supplies that weighed almost 250 pounds.

He said he could feel a burning sensation in his hands from potential frostbite. He wanted to quit but he didn’t. “ ‘Quitters never win and winners never quit.’ I saw that on a sign when I was walking somewhere. … If you keep that in mind, you guys will never be losers. Never,” he said.

Another part was when he was walking through Ohio and it rained for more than 30 days. He recalled his feet blistering as he walked through stormy weather conditions. The walk through Ohio took upwards of 20 days, he said.

“I didn’t give up. I just kept pushing,” he said.

He told the teens they needed to persevere and think about their future, whether that is college, a job or entering the military. They needed to have an optimistic outlook, he said.

“You have to visualize yourself crossing the finish line. … Be positive when you do it,” he said.

New plans for 911 center delays sheriff’s facility

JOLIET – Will County Board members were less than enthused Tuesday about a delayed construction timeline for the planned sheriff’s facility on Laraway Road.

A groundbreaking was scheduled for this spring, but site work won’t begin until August now that design plans are being reconfigured to incorporate several of the county’s 911 dispatch centers.

Will County leaders offered last month to pay for a new regional facility. Doing so would help the 911 Board pare down the county’s six dispatch centers, as mandated by the state. Dispatch centers in Romeoville, Crete and Frankfort would likely be folded into the new sheriff’s location.

But the $25 million-to-$26 million sheriff’s building project has hit a snag because of a change in design plans and the possibility for cost overruns, said Dave Tkac, deputy chief of staff for the Will County Executive’s Office, said during a special Will County Board’s Capital Improvements Committee meeting.

The new plan adds 15,000 square feet onto the 67,000-square-foot sheriff’s building for 911 operations, plus about 6,500 square feet for 911 administrative offices. Tkac said costs may increase with required specialty design work that ensures the 911 center can withstand natural disasters.

Capital Improvements Committee Chairwoman Ragan Freitag, R-Wilmington, said she is unhappy with the delays, and suggested all parties involved need to get on the same page. The county is, after all, offering to pay for a new facility, she said.

“This may sound aggressive but if these entities can’t play nice in the sandbox, then they’re not going to get a building at all,” Freitag said. “We’re doing a good thing and if there’s issues

and I need to come to some of these meetings … but when I see that the site work isn’t going to be until August, that makes me uneasy.”

Will County 911’s chief administrator Steve Figved, who did not attend and was not aware of Tuesday’s meeting, said he met with project leaders weeks ago to give them a list of “very detailed needs.”

“There shouldn’t be any surprises or more delays. We’ve given everybody a list of needs. Every office space is accounted for, our storage area has been accounted for, break room, bathrooms,” Figved said. “We’re not in conflict with anybody. We’re working out some minor details.”

Jake Davis, principal architect with the Chicago-based DLR Group, said Tuesday the firm is working on “different scenarios” and hope to have a schematic design by month’s end.

Both Theta engines are paired with a

six-speed automatic transmission. The Sonata Eco is fitted with a 1.6-liter, 178-hp turbocharged four mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. All get combined city/highway mileage of 25 miles per gallon or better.

Sonata Hybrid’s Nu gasoline engine is linked to a six-speed automatic and produces 154 hp, with an electric motor adding 51 hp, for a net power output of 193 hp. The Hybrid averages 40 mpg combined city/highway.

Sonata is responsive to drive and comfortable for five. Hyundai bills it as a mid-size sedan, but headroom and legroom approach the full-size sedan class. In addition, there is a generous 16.3 cubic feet of trunk cargo space.

Standard features include foldaway heated outside mirrors, rear lip spoiler, air conditioning, power windows, power door locks, 60/40 split fold-down rear seatback, tilt/telescope steering wheel, steering-wheel-mounted audio/BlueTooth and cruise controls, and 8-way power driver seat with power adjustable lumbar support (except base SE model).

Sonata’s interior adds more content for 2016, including Android Auto and rearview camera system. Standard on all models except Limited is a 7-inch color touchscreen Display Audio system. Limited 2.0T gets an 8-inch touchscreen navigation, which is available as an upgrade on other models, with downloadable apps, HD radio and Infinity premium audio system.

In addition, a conventional sunroof is now available on Sport models and standard on Limited.

Tuesday Henderson, the woman who accompanied Christopher Thompson to Louis’ Family Restaurant on Aug. 3, 2013, answered “I ain’t for sure” or “I don’t remember” to the overwhelming majority of Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Mike Christopher Fitzgerald’s questions Thompson throughout her testimony at Thompson’s murder trial.

Prosecutors said Thompson and Henderson went to eat breakfast at the restaurant at 1001 W. Jefferson St., where they encountered Gerardo Franchini eating with his family.

Thompson and Franchini were involved in an ongoing feud and argued before Henderson pulled Thompson away and they left the restaurant, prosecutors said. About 15 minutes later, Franchini was fatally shot by a man who tried to cover his face with a shirt or towel; eyewitnesses identified and some have testified that Thompson was

the shooter.

Henderson said she knew Thompson, but was unclear for how long. She acknowledged they’re good friends who have dated and his nickname is “Little.” She said they were at a nightclub and ended up at his grandparents’ house the night before going to Louis’.

Henderson testified Thompson had taken his car to have a tire fixed before they went for breakfast, but she did not remember how they got to the garage or the restaurant. Henderson also said she didn’t remember any confrontation between Thompson and anyone else.

She said after leaving Louis’ they returned to her house in Joliet.

“We were talking about a text message, another female was texting him,” Henderson said.

“So you do remember that?” Fitzgerald asked.

“I wouldn’t call it an argument.

Probably a disagreement,” Henderson said.

Henderson testified she did not recall how long Thompson stayed at her house before going to pick up his car.

She said she did not see him again for the rest of the day and did not remember being questioned at the police department that night.

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Public School District 86 Board of School Inspectors has scheduled a public reception for one of four candidates hoping to be the next superintendent.

Theresa Rouse, superintendent of King City Union School District in California, has been announced as a finalist to replace Charles Coleman, who plans to retire July 1, according to a district news release.

The reception is scheduled for 3 to 5 p.m. Feb. 29 at the J.F. Kennedy Administrative Center, 420 N. Raynor Ave. The reception will be for district employees, parents and community members to meet Rouse, who has been the King City district’s superintendent since 2012.

District 86 spokeswoman Sandy Zalewski said Rouse is one of four candidates under consideration for the job.

Zalewski said she didn’t know whether there would be a reception for the other candidates.

Rouse spent five years at the Santa Cruz County Office of Education in California, where she served in several roles, including associate superintendent of educational services.

Rouse has a doctorate in educational leadership from Argosy University in Phoenix, Arizona, and a master’s degree in education from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Indiana.

She received her bachelor’s degree in education from Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri.

The district received 59 applications for the post, reviewed nine and conducted interviews with four candidates.

Specialist to lobby changes for electronics recycling law

JOLIET – Will County recycling specialist Marta Keane is working with state lobbyists in hopes of amending Illinois’ electronics recycling law so that collection costs do not continue to fall on the shoulders of local governments and their taxpayers.

Keane’s call for a change to the state law comes on the heels of last month’s announcement that Will County’s recycler is exiting out of its contract early, unable to secure contracts with manufacturers, which are key funders in the state’s e-recycling program.

Consequently, the county had to close most of its dropoff sites and secure a new vendor.

Keane told County Board members Feb. 9 the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency released its 2016 e-waste report, outlining recommendations for changes to the state’s e-recycling program.

While the Illinois Product Stewardship Council – a coalition of public and private entities working on the issue – is pleased with many of the IEPA’s recommendations, the council

has some ideas of its own, Keane told members.

The IEPA report explains much of the problems plaguing the state’s program: manufacturers’ weight goals are inadequate to meet collection demands, some counties are poorly underserved and many collection programs are not available year-round.

The IEPA report also acknowledges there are too many counties categorized as underserved, allowing manufacturers to receive double credit for collection too often.

Keane said the IPSC is “building on” the IEPA’s recommendations. She told board members she is worried about the IEPA recommendation that counties with a population size of Will County have just four drop-off sites.

Keane said she hopes to lobby lawmakers for eight sites, or more than half of what the county had during its 13-site peak.

IPSC has recommended the IEPA require manufacturers to enter contracts with recyclers by an established deadline, update reporting requirements and use new data to uncover fraud in the e-waste recycling industry.

JOLIET – Joliet’s downtown casino brought in nearly 13 percent more revenue last month compared with January 2015, according to figures released earlier this month by the Illinois Gaming Board.

Harrah’s Casino in Joliet recorded about $17.3 million in adjusted gross receipts last month, compared with $15.3 million in January 2015.

Hollywood Casino brought in about 4.3 percent more in revenue last month, seeing about $9.9 million compared with $9.5 million in January 2015.

In terms of revenue among the state’s 10 casinos, Harrah’s in Joliet ranked as a distant second in January, far behind the $35 million Des Plaines’ River Casino brought in.

The Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin came in third with $13.6 million, while Hollywood Casino in Aurora ranked fourth with $10 million. Hollywood Casino in Joliet came in fifth.

der $996,000 in tax revenue last month for the city of Joliet, while Hollywood brought in about $585,000. In all, the state’s 10 casinos brought in a collective $6.9 million for Illinois municipalities.

Admissions at Harrah’s stood at 131,914 last month, representing an 4.65 percent increase from 126,053 in January 2015.

Hollywood saw 88,526 visitors, representing a 5.35 percent increase compared with the same time last year.

Casinos see revenue gains in January

Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – As of June, most outdoor donation drop boxes will no longer be allowed in Channahon.

Village trustees unanimously approved a new law Monday that calls for a ban on the collection containers that some say have become dumping zones for garbage.

Many of the boxes are in poor condition, village staff told trustees, with no screening and placement that impedes traffic flow or produces other safety concerns.

“This will ban unattended outdoor donation boxes,” Director of Community Development Mike Petrick said.

“They will have until June 1 to remove them.”

Examples include boxes to collect books, clothing, shoes, furniture and other household items, Petrick wrote in a memo, in which he also stated many of the boxes serve for-profit entities.

The ordinance excludes paper recycling containers, which may remain but will require village permits. There will be no charge for the permits.

“We feel it is in the best interest of the village to allow those [paper recycling] donation boxes to stay in place,” he said.

Trustees Monday also heard more about proposed senior housing development St. Elizabeth Residences.

A special-use permit for the development, along with an ordinance modifying zoning regulations and other legal matters, will come before the board for a vote in March.

The 48 units of affordable, independent living for seniors are planned for the village’s Town Center, just west of Village Hall. The units are for seniors age 62 and older. No younger children or spouses will be allowed. There will,

In other board business, trustees approved authorizing the sale of four guns that had been given to the Police Department by residents – a Remington 870 Express, a Remington 870 Wingmaster, a Smith & Wesson Model 36 and a Beretta Model 92. The firearms are unusable, Police Chief Jeff Wold told the board, with rust or broken mechanisms.

Wold said the firearms are valued at $500. He recommended trading the guns to a dealer in exchange for one Glock 22 handgun that would be used as a spare in the department’s armory.

LOCAL BRIEFS WILMINGTON – Police say a Chicago man threatened his estranged Wilmington girlfriend – and her young son – with a knife.

Wilmington police responded about 3 a.m.

Saturday to the 100 block of South First Street in Wilmington after receiving a 911 call that Aristides Aristides Penagos, 27, of the 5000 Penagos block of West Newport Avenue in Chicago, was standing outside an apartment with a knife and wouldn’t allow his ex or her 7-year-old son to leave, according to a Wilmington Police Department news release.

The incident occurred at 3:14 p.m., when the driver of the car lost control of the vehicle and its front end collided with the semi’s front driver side, according to Illinois State Police.

The victims, whose names were not available, were transported to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Crash in Channahon Township sends 2 to hospital

CHANNAHON TOWNSHIP – Two people were freed Monday afternoon after a car and semitrailer crashed on the Arsenal Road entrance ramp to northbound Interstate 55 in Channahon Township.

A Wilmington woman has been sentenced to eight years in prison for stealing more than $500,000 during a six-year period from a Naperville law firm where she was employed.

Wilmington woman gets 8 years for stealing from ex-employer

according to a news release issued Tuesday by the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office that announced her sentence.

Kelty worked in the firm’s Le Anna Kelty accounting department, and from November 2006 to February 2013 she forged her employers’ signatures and deposited unauthorized checks into her personal bank accounts, the release stated.

About a year after she left the firm, discrepancies in the firm’s books were discovered and, after an internal audit, the firm contacted law enforcement.

Kelty must serve half her sentence before being eligible for parole.

When police arrived, they found a large knife had been placed on the handrail outside. When they knocked on the door, Penagos answered and tried to shut the door, the release stated, but officers were able to force their way in to help the woman. She and her son were not injured.

LOCAL BRIEFS Light pole knocked onto I-55 in collision near Bolingbrook exit

BOLINGBROOK – A collision between a truck and a car led to a light pole being knocked down that blocked traffic Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 55, state police said.

The collision happened about 3:15 p.m. near the Route 53 interchange near Bolingbrook and shut down two northbound lanes where the crash occurred and three southbound lanes where the light pole fell, state police said. Lanes were cleared by 3:45 p.m. No one was injured.

QUESTION: My oldest brother Joe died three months ago; he was 84 years old. I am 75 years old and his youngest sister. Both he and I have lived in our family home since our parents built it in the late 1920’s. Neither my brother nor I have ever married, nor do we have any children. My brother was very ill during the last five years of his life. I became his primary caretaker and completely lost any social life I had. My brother repeatedly told me he would leave me a substantial sum in his Will for taking care of him. Now I find out that he never made a Will.

Now my two sisters and the family of my other brother (who died 10 years ago) tell me they are going to sell the house right out from under me. They also tell me that I will only get a 1/4 share of his estate. What are my rights in this situation?

ANSWER: First, call your attorney. Find out if he or she handles probate cases. If not, have them refer you to someone who concentrates in probate law, because in your situation you definitely need one.

Second, your brother died leaving an “intestate” estate, that is estate without a Will.

Under Illinois law (Section 2-1 of the Probate Act), you, your two sisters and the children of your deceased brother are entitled to a 1/4 share of the estate of your brother who died three months ago.

Third, someone needs to be appointed to act as the “administrator” of your late brother’s estate. This person is appointed by the Probate Court to make sure all his heirs are treated fairly. Under Illinois law (Section 9-3 (f) of the Probate Act) you and your two sisters have the legal authority to “nominate” someone to serve as the “administrator”.

Fourth, and most important for you, you must talk to your attorney about filing a “custodial claim” against your late brother’s estate. Under Illinios law (Section 18-1.1 of the Probate Act) “Any...sister who dedicates... herself to the care of a disabled person by living with and personally caring for the disabled person for at least 3 years shall be entitled to claim against the estate of the disabled person”. This claim takes into consideration your lost employment opportunities, your lost lifestyle opportunities and the emotional distress you may have experienced as a result of personally caring for your brother. The claim is also based upon the nature and extent of your later brother’s disability. Your claim can range from $45,000.00 if your brother was 25% disabled to $180.000.00 if he was 100% disabled.

In your situation if your brother was 75% disabled, then you can file a claim for at least $135,000.00 in addition to your 1/4 share of his estate. Assuming you and your brother are “on title” and now own your parents home as “Tenants-in-common”, you could use your claim money to buy out your relatives interest in the home.

HOWEVER, if you and your brother were “on title” as joint tenants with right of survivorship, then you became the sole owner of that home instantaneously upon your brother’s death – and you can tell your relatives to “take a hike” – the house is yours.

Police Chief Brian Benton said the department’s awards committee noticed Otis follows up in many cases and makes himself available as a mentor to the six rookie officers he’s trained in the past year. Otis also found four wanted suspects on his patrol beat and initiated three neighborhood problem cases to remove residents engaged in criminal activity.

“While responding to a [2015] call regarding a sexual assault, officer Otis used the camera on his Taser to capture the statements the suspect was making at the scene,” Benton said. “His efforts resulted in a successful prosecution and a 22-year prison sentence.”

Otis grew up in Joliet and has been a Joliet officer for nine years. Previously, he was a Braidwood officer and spent time assigned to the Will County Gang Suppression Unit.

“When I was a little kid, my grandmother fell and couldn’t get up. The Will County sheriff’s police were there before the paramedics and they started helping her. Since then, I’ve known this is what I wanted to do,” Otis said, adding that his father was an auxiliary sheriff’s deputy.

Police officers are now required to issue receipts with their badge numbers when stopping pedestrians, and body cameras will soon be standard-issue equipment.

“As one of the larger departments we’ve always handled our own investigations of police-shooting incidents, but under a new law those must be conducted by an outside agency,” he said.

OBITUARIES KATHLEEN M. AMBROZICH Kathleen M. Ambrozich, age 66, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2016, with her loving family by her side after a courageous battle with pneumonia.

Kathleen is survived by her loving daughter, Stacy Ambrozich; brothers, Kenny (Renee) Gestel and Melvin (Rita) Sayre; niece, Lori (Stephen) Bamberg; great-nephews, Matt, Danny and Johnny Bamberg; great-great-nephew, Noah Bamberg; uncle, Raymond Gestel. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Born in Elizabeth, MS, in 1940, he moved to Illinois in 1966. He retired from Caterpillar Inc. in 2000 after 35 years of service. Kenny was an avid gardener and enjoyed canning beans and tomatoes every year for his family and friends. He also enjoyed caring for many four-legged friends which included cats, dogs and horses. Other pastimes included carpentry and handyman work.

Eric Philip Krall, passed away Feb. 6, 2016, in Knoxville, Tennessee, at the age of 32. He was born Oct. 18, 1983, at Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, to Philip and Mary (Gimpel) Krall. Eric grew up in Shorewood. He graduated from St. Jude’s Catholic Grade School in 1998, Providence Catholic High School in 2002 and earned a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from the University of St. Francis.

Eric was a poster child for Easter Seals at age 3. As a young man, he regularly served as a host for the entertainment portion of the Easter Seals Telethon. He played basketball in grade school and became tech savvy at a very young age. He developed an insatiable interest in history and politics, the Civil War in particular. Teachers found it best to let him have the floor when it came to that period in history. He was a member of the Law Club in high school and the Young Republicans in college. Eric also enjoyed his travels to England, France, Scotland, Germany and Austria.

Eric began working at Best Buy in high school and continued at the Joliet store until his recent promotion and transfer to manage the Pacific Sales division of Best Buy in Knoxville, Tennessee. He is remembered by his team as a positive leader with tremendous knowledge of products and sales expertise.

Eric is survived by his parents, Phil and Mary of Shorewood; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Edward Krall and Gloria Krall Llewellyn; maternal grandparents, Robert and Ruth Gimpel; his uncle, Gary Krall; and cousin, Devin Alexander.

Rauner to detail next budget plan

The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner is preparing to give lawmakers his spending plan for next fiscal year, even though the protracted budget battle over the current year isn’t close to playing out.

The state is in its eighth month without a budget, and is running up a huge tab because the state has been ordered by courts to keep many essential services running, The sticking points in the Republican governor’s battle with the Democrats haven’t changed: He wants to overhaul term limits, change how legislative districts are drawn and curb the union power. Democrats say what Rauner wants needs to be debated separately from the budget.

Here are some things to watch for in Rauner’s budget address Wednesday:

Long-term plans

One lingering question is whether lawmakers and the governor will create a two-year budget or handle each year – this delayed year and fiscal 201617 – separately.

Rauner has not offered any hints on how he plans to proceed, but lawmakers involved in the budget-writing process have raised the possibility of having a two-year budget. They’ll expect some direction from the governor when he gives his speech.

Whatever happens, Rauner emphasizes that he’s taking a long view, but has divulged few details – other than to say that he realizes the changes he wants will be hard to achieve.

“We’re going to talk about the change that’s needed so we can actually have truly balanced budgets in the future,” he said last week. “That’s what we’re going to talk about.”

Economic growth

Rauner has said in recent months that he thinks the key is to get Illinois’ finances out of the red.

Illinois faces a roughly $5 billion budget deficit this year, and its unpaid bill backlog could reach almost $26 billion by 2020 if current revenue and spending policies continue.

One of Rauner’s favorite talking points is that if Illinois’ economy grew at the national average during the past 15 years, the state would’ve collected $19 billion more to invest on things such as schools and infrastructure.

“We’ve got to become a growth state – pro-business, pro-agriculture, pro-investment. And we’ve got to shrink our wasteful spending and our bureaucracy,” Rauner told the Illinois Pork Producers’ meeting Tuesday.

Expect to hear that line again Wednesday.

He’s also used the same phrase to swipe at the individual income tax increase that Democrats passed in 2011 and ended last year, saying that it would’ve been unnecessary if the state’s economy was more robust.

Efficiency

Rauner has said he will consider tax increases, provided he gets the reforms he wants. But the governor also has said Illinois would have more money to invest in social service programs and higher education if it was run more efficiently.

Lately, he’s unveiled plans he says will save money by consolidating Illinois’ information technology departments and streamlining how the state buys goods and services. Rauner said that reducing the time it takes to buy products could save the state $514 million a year.

Dems urge Kirk to take stand on Scalia nominee

CHICAGO – The Democrats vying for a chance to replace U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk pressed the Illinois Republican on Tuesday to take a definitive position on who should choose a replacement for the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.

The three Democratic candidates in next month’s primary – U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth, former Chicago Urban League CEO Andrea Zopp and state Sen. Napoleon Harris – said during a live-streamed Chicago Sun-Times endorsement session that the nomination process should begin immediately un-

der President Barack Obama.

“It tugs at the democracy of our nation to not have this justice appointed,” Harris said.

Scalia’s death on Saturday triggered political debates nationwide, but the issue is especially tricky for Kirk, who is one of most vulnerable Republican senators in the 2016 election and seeking a second term in Obama’s home state.

As other Senate Republicans in tight contests lined up behind the idea that Obama’s successor should nominate Scalia’s replacement, Kirk shied away from the issue.

“The political debate erupting about prospective nominees to fill the vacancy is unseemly,” Kirk said in a

statement released by his campaign Tuesday, “let us take the time to honor his life before the inevitable debate erupts.”

He didn’t elaborate on when he would take a position.

The funeral for the 79-year-old Scalia is scheduled for Saturday. His casket will be on public view in the U.S. Supreme Court’s Great Hall on Friday.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky has said the winner of the presidency in November, should fill the vacancy. GOP incumbents facing tough races in other states, including Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, New Hampshire and Ohio, have followed suit.

But Obama has said it’s his constitutional duty and Democrats have said that denying Obama the chance to pick a replacement would be an unprecedented step.

Zopp, a Harvard Law School graduate, said that no matter who picks the nominee, there’s no guarantee of how a new justice would evaluate cases – and jurists’ views can evolve. She said for Republicans to hold up the process now would be a mistake.

“It is so typical of the challenges that we have in Washington,” she said.

Duckworth said the fact that Kirk had not weighed in on the replacement process was “a disservice” to the public.

Focus on possibilities with next president

To the Editor: Prior to the American Revolution: Let’s be pragmatic. This is fantasy, leave leadership to the adults in the room.

Prior to abolishing slavery: Sure it sounds nice, but this is never ever gonna happen.

Prior to women’s suffrage: We have to focus on little victories. Progress doesn’t happen overnight.

Prior to establishing child labor laws: How much is this going to cost our businesses? Clearly you don’t understand economics.

Prior to getting civil rights passed: Voting never changed anything.

Prior to electing Bernie Sanders: Let’s be pragmatic. This is fantasy, leave leadership to the adults in the room.

Abe and me: Sharing a birthday with Illinois’ martyred saint SPRINGFIELD – Last Friday, Illinoisans celebrated Abraham Lincoln’s birthday and I celebrated mine.

If you grow up in Illinois sharing a birthday with our state’s martyred saint, expect to be thoroughly indoctrinated in Lincoln lore.

When I was a kid, I read every Lincoln biography in the school library, had a picture of Honest Abe tacked to my bedroom bulletin board and could rattle off Lincoln trivia the way other boys can recite baseball statistics.

When I was 8, I wanted to go to Gettysburg – not Disney World.

Other states have nicknamed themselves after their crops, their heritages or natural attributes.

Illinois, on the other hand, is the only one that identifies itself with a person – thanks to state Sen. Fred Hart of Streator who in 1955 sponsored legislation designating the

Here in Springfield, Lincoln has been all but deified – Preserver of the Union, The Railsplitter, the Great Emancipator.

In many ways, Lincoln is the glue that holds together the state’s identity.

Ask a Texan where she’s from and she’ll say “Texas.”

Ask the same question of an Illinoisan and you more than likely will hear: “Chicago,” “the suburbs” or “downstate.”

Illinois has long been a divided state with a political heritage that would make Rod Blagojevich blush.

And culturally the divide is even

greater.

Folks in the northeastern part of the state live like they are in New York City and think down in southern Illinois it’s rural Alabama.

Years ago, I worked out of state with a woman from Skokie.

When she learned I was from Illinois, she wanted to know if I was from the city or the suburbs.

When I told her I grew up on a hog farm near Galesburg, she gave me a blank perplexed look.

It wasn’t part of her conception of Illinois.

But Lincoln has become the touchstone that joins the state. His life reflects the contradictions of Illinois.

His most famous act – the Emancipation Proclamation – was the classic Illinois political move.

It freed slaves only in areas controlled by the Confederacy – but not in areas under Union control.

It looked high-minded and statesman like. But the proclamation’s immediate value was as a ploy to keep the England and France from supporting the Confederacy.

Secretary of State William Seward said, at the time, “We show our sympathy with slavery by emancipating slaves where we cannot reach them and holding them in bondage where we can set them free.”

An Illinois politician motivated by appearances rather than idealism?

Maybe what we are seeing today in Springfield shouldn’t be so surprising.

After all, “Honest Abe” cut his political teeth as an Illinois legislator.

Familiarity breeds Minooka victory Bachmann helps Indians knock off Southwest Prairie rival in regional semifinal

dgoss@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Senior guard Sky Osborne was doing everything in her power to get the Romeoville girls basketball team back into Tuesday night’s game against Minooka in the semifinals of the Class 4A Minooka Regional.

However, reserve center Abigail Holloway crashed the offensive boards and scored on a putback with 12 seconds left in the third quarter to extend the Indians’ lead to 35-29.

Although Osborne hit two free throws to close the quarter, Holloway’s

effort seem to put the momentum back into Minooka’s corner. The Indians ran their delay game to perfection in the fourth quarter and walked away with a 47-36 victory.

“We did have a little momentum there toward the end of the third quarter,” said Romeoville coach Julio Carrasco, whose Spartans had rallied from a 31-20 deficit early in the third quarter.

“That was a big putback basket she (Holloway) scored, and then Ray (Liberatore, Minooka’s coach) did a tremendous job countering our defense in the fourth quarter. They got the lead

back up a little, and they took the air out of the ball and forced us to go into man defense and chase.”

When the Indians (20-7), who reached the 20-victory plateau for a third straight season, get a team in that situation, they are tough to beat with seniors Brooke Bachmann and Sydney Arlis leading the way.

“With Brooke and Sydney, when we get a leads we’re in good shape,” Liberatore said. “They’re both smart players, and they hit their free throws.”

Bachmann finished with 15 points, including 9 of 11 free throws. Arlis had 10.

Junior Hailey Arlis also was heard from big time in the first half, when she hit 4 of 7 shots, 3 of 4 from 3-point range, and scored all 11 of her points.

Her early marksmanship helped the Indians to a 27-18 halftime lead over their Southwest Prairie Conference rival.

“I think that was Hailey’s best allaround game,” Bachmann said. “She was incredible. With her shooting like that, that’s four of us who can hit the three, including Sydney, Jenna (Roberts) and me.”

Lewis’ Strus up for national award SUBMITTED REPORTS

ROMEOVILLE – Lewis sophomore forward Max Strus has been selected to the second watch list for the Bevo Francis Award, consisting of 50 of the best men’s basketball players among divisions of four-year schools except NCAA Division I. Strus leads the Flyers (18-7, 10-5 GLVC) in scoring (20.4-point average), rebounding (9.0) and assists (3.72). He leads the GLVC in rebounding, is second in scoring and is 13th overall in assists.

The watch list will be reduced to 25 on March 15. The finalists will be announced on April 1.

28 points and pulled in 15 rebounds while shooting 13-of-17 (.765). Based on current conference records, Brawner-Henley became the league’s all-time leading career rebounder with 1,200 boards, a record that was previously held by Saint Joseph’s College’s Sloan Haughey (1,187) from 1989-93.

In the 59-51 win at Truman State on Saturday, the forward moved into second position for scoring at Lewis with 1,873 career points. In addition to her game’s 26 points, she added 12 rebounds, two blocks and two assists and was 10-of-18 (.556) from the floor.

“Sky has been a captain for three years,” Carrasco said. “She has a great attitude and is a team player. Defensively, she is a heck of a player and offensively, she looks to spark us.”

Brittany Osborne chipped in six points and Jahari Smith five, all in the first quarter, for Romeoville, which made one-third of its shots both halves, finishing 15 of 45.

“We had a good defensive game,” Liberatore said. “I guess that’s the great thing, us knowing each other so well. We defended well.”

The familiarity with the opponent worked for the Indians this time. It marked their third victory over Romeoville this season, but the first two were tight until the last couple of minutes.

This time, Minooka went on a 9-0 run over a six-minute span in the fourth quarter to pull away for good.

“We were inconsistent this season, and inconsistent within games, like we were tonight,” Carrasco said.

Minooka’s opponent in Thursday’s 7 p.m. regional final also is a Southwest Prairie adversary. The Indians have lost twice to Oswego East.

“The last week of the season, we played Oswego East and Romeoville,” Liberatore noted. “The first time against Oswego East, it was close with about four minutes to go. The game last week they beat us bad. They are so explosive, as you saw tonight (against Joliet West).

“But it will be fun to be at home for a regional final and have a big crowd supporting us – we’re used to being away.”

Bolingbrook’s hot second-half start sparks victory over Lockport

kjasnica@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – The Bolingbrook boys basketball team got off to a hot start in the second half of Tuesday’s home game against Lockport.

The Raiders started to light things up when junior Nana Wiafe-Akenten went up with one hand and dunked to make the crowd erupt.

After outscoring its foe by 10 points, 19-9, in the third quarter, Bolingbrook was able to pick up a 54-49 SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue victory over the Porters. The Raiders (11-10) have now won five out of their last six games.

“I think that we did a much better job in the third quarter executing the game plan and doing what we expected to do,” Raider coach Rob Brost said. “Obviously, when you have a team like Lockport, they’re dangerous and they can beat us.

We’ve won five out of six here and it’s a good direction that we’re moving toward into the playoffs. Overall, I’m happy.”

Lockport (10-12) started off the game very strong and very easily could have erupted in the second half.

With the score tied at 11, the ball went

off Porter hands and was heading toward the Raider bench. Senior Casey Schlusemann hustled, threw himself into the opposing players and saved the ball for his team.

Leading 13-12 after the first quarter, Lockport scored the first basket, but then Bolingbrook took over. The Raiders went on an 8-0 point streak to go up make the score 20-16 in their favor.

A huge reason why the Raiders stayed in the first half was Darick Anderson.

The senior scored all of his 12 points in the first half. Anderson hit all of his four 3-pointers at big moments to switch momentum.

“I just have to do what my coach is expecting of me, shoot the ball,” Anderson said. “Last year when I came off the bench, he expected me to take that shot, just knock it down. This year, I have to fill those shoes again.”

Lockport played strong defense to keep Bolingbrook scoreless in the final seconds of the first half.

The Porters gained possession of the ball, and with the clock winding down, sophomore Kevin Horan hit a half-court buzzer-beater to make it a tie game at 26.

That shot could have given Lockport

big momentum to start out, but it somehow gave it to Wiafe-Akenten.

The junior came out and scored backto-back baskets. He ended up with 14 for the night.

“Nana is a very good player for us. We expect him to play at a high level, and that’s what he does,” Brost said. “He does a good job for us on the glass and he’s our leading scorer too. He knows the system.”

Porter junior Matt Smietanski tried to fire up his team with some nice plays, but his 14 points fell just short.

What lost the game for Lockport were the little things. Against a good and hot team, the Porters couldn’t afford to miss the six free throws that they did.

“That’s been the story for us for about a week and a half now,” Porter coach Brett Hespell said. “We’ve been right there, knocking on the door. A two-possession loss to Stagg. Overtime to Joliet Central. Buzzer-beater at Sandburg.

Two-possession game here. Winning and being close to winning are not the same thing. We’re just struggling to get past that right now.”

Brandon Credit and Mikolaj Nowobilski added scored seven points for Lockport.

Leading the Raiders were Waife-Akenten (14), Anderson (12) and senior Zachery Grady (10) scored double digits.

Freshman Joseph Yesufu also had an impressive night with seven points.

After struggling at the beginning of the year, Bolingbrook feels like the past five wins in six games means that they are in the right direction come post-season.

“We were fairly a new team. We hadn’t played together,” Waife-Akenten said. “We had two freshmen up and had players who didn’t really have varsity experience. I know that we were willing to put in that work to better ourselves. We did just that. We’ve done a lot better than we had at the beginning of the season. We still have a long ways to go, but I think we can still do it.”

“At the beginning of the season, we all had the image of going back downstate,” Anderson said. “We had to put the pieces together. Some pieces were missing. At practice, we got at it. We pushed each other. Sometimes at practice, we push each other more than we push the players we play against. The pieces started coming together and everything started flowing out how it should.”

MINOOKA – Coming off an emotional win in the postseason opener, the Joliet West girls’ basketball team had to take on a red-hot Oswego East squad less than 24 hours later in Tuesday’s Class 4A Minooka Regional semifinal.

The Tigers were not intimidated, building a seven-point lead before the No. 2-seeded Wolves turned up the defensive pressure in the third quarter and rallied from behind to win 62-40.

“We ramped up that intensity. ... We did a good job packing it in and started to get those looks from our defense and started to get more steals, second-chance points and Syd (Schultz) was running the floor and finding those people,” Carretto said. “We’ve got to get it inside and we need the posts to do some work. It was just a matter of moving the ball around more.”

Oswego East (25-2) advances to Thursday’s regional championship game against either Minooka or Romeoville, who met in Tuesday’s second semifinal game. The Wolves will be playing for the first girls’ basketball regional title in school history.

West (11-18) jumped out to a 5-0 lead to

West took its largest lead of the night, 33-26, after a free throw with 4:12 to play in the third quarter, but Oswego East got a defensive spark from guards Maya Dennis, Alexis Davis and Milan Smith to shift the momentum.

Schultz (17 points) assisted a Ty Battle basket before scoring six of the next eight points as the Wolves took control. Battle scored 10 of her game-high 19 points in the third quarter, and Schultz blocked a Joliet West shot and dished the ball to Smith, who converted in the paint for a 40-35 lead entering the fourth quarter.

Oswego East, which went 14-0 to win the Southwest Prairie Conference, was dominant in the fourth quarter, scoring 22 points while holding the Tigers to just five. The teams will meet again in the 2015-16 season as West joins the SPC. “We made a statement that we can play with them. That team won their conference and we’re moving into that conference next year, so it’s a good statement game for us that we can play with the best,” Placher said. “I’m looking forward to next year. Everybody is coming back except Kierra. She did a nice job tonight. We can’t ask for any more from the girls the way they played tonight.

I’m extremely happy with the way they played.”

Fifteen area 3A wrestlers to make state debuts

cherron@shawmedia.com While some wrestlers are fortunate to make multiple state appearances during their high school career, many are lucky if they get the chance to make only one trip to Champaign.

The area’s 32 state qualifiers from the Class 3A Bolingbrook Sectional give an indication of how hard it is earn multiple appearances at the state finals. A total of 17 individuals have qualified two or more times while 15 others will be making their initial visits to the event.

Providence Catholic led the way with the most state newcomers, with six. Lockport and Plainfield South had two apiece while Bolingbrook, Joliet West, Lincoln-Way East, Minooka and Plainfield East will all be represented by one individual making their first state trip.

Of the group who are making their debuts in Champaign this weekend, only three are seniors – Joliet West’s Meekah Ben-Israel, Plainfield South’s Marc Fleenor and Minooka’s Kenny Kirkland. And only two are juniors – Plainfield South’s Adrian Cervantes and Lincoln-Way East’s Sam Diehl.

After missing out on a state last year by one win, 30-9 Ben-Israel ensured himself of a spot by claiming fourth at 220.

“The coaches told me to always remember about how I felt after losing that match last year,” Ben-Israel said.

“I lost by one point in that match last year and won by one point this year.

I’ve been working hard and I’m hanging with the top guys, but I just need to get some wins. I get a chance to wrestle in the finals and I’m going to try to get a place. But magical things happen down in Champaign, I’ve heard.”

Fleenor carries a 43-6 record to state after finishing third at 132.

“Someone who I really have to give credit to is Miguel Silva,” Fleenor said. “He taught me a lot of what I know about sweep singles, just staying neutral and being confident. Getting to state is just one of my many goals in life. Last year I didn’t even have a chance to qualify, so this is fulfilling. It’s a sense of pride and I really feel thankful for where I’m at right now.”

Cervantes, who fell a win shy of a state trip last year, took fourth at 160 to qualify and brings a 29-14 mark to the finals.

“I’m so excited right now,” Cervantes said. “I really dedicated myself to the sport and I worked really hard in the offseason and made it to Fargo. A lot of people want to be good

Diehl, who also fell one win shy of a state trip a year ago, is 37-10 and advanced after capturing third place at 285.

“I was a match away last year so I was hoping to get down to state this year and I’m ecstatic to get there,” Diehl said. “As soon as the offseason started, getting to state was my goal from day one and now I’m hoping to get on the podium. I’m really excited since I feel like I’m peaking and hitting a high point. I’m past where I was, so I’m getting real excited.”

Providence’s Dominick Ambrose, Ben Emery and Cole Smith and Plainfield East’s Anthony Zamora are sophomores who are making their state debuts. And six freshmen – Providence’s Juan Bazaldua, Jake Lindsey and Josh Ramos, Bolingbrook’s Dylan Burnoski and Lockport’s Bay-

lor Fernandes and Ronald Tucker – will also be making their initial trips.

Zamora takes a 25-8 record to state after settling for fourth at 113.

“I feel like all of the hard work that I’ve done has paid off,” Zamora said. “At the beginning of the season I was getting tired in my matches. Michael (McGee) is so fast and so strong so he and Zach Krause have really helped me out. Last year I didn’t get to wrestle so I practiced all year with Michael, who was a state champ. I’ve worked hard so it feels good.”

Burnoski, who is 30-8 after placing second at 106, is one of the few Raiders to ever advance as a freshman.

“It feels good to be going to state as a freshman,” Burnoski said. “I don’t think that there’s ever been a freshman to make it to state from Bolingbrook. I was a four-time state finalist and I won it in my seventh-grade year.

Transitioning from middle school to high school is a really big change and I feel that the Junior Raiders feeder program got me prepared for this.”

Fernandes finished third at 138 and carries a 30-10 mark to Champaign.

“Coming in here as a freshman and getting third place feels good since most people can’t do that,” Fernandes said. “Hopefully in the future, some of these freshmen can become state champions. Our whole team helps us in practice and gets us ready for the big tournaments. I’m just hoping to go there and place, which would be pretty good for a freshman.”

JOLIET – After turning in a disappointing defensive effort in Friday’s defeat at Oswego East, Minooka’s boys basketball team came into Tuesday’s contest at Plainfield South with something to prove.

The Southwest Prairie Conference leaders were determined to clamp down defensively, and that resulted in a frustrating evening for the Cougars on their senior night.

Minooka held South scoreless for more than 10 minutes, which helped it to grab a 23-7 halftime lead. Things were never in doubt after that as the Indians captured a 47-34 win.

With Plainfield East edging Oswego 62-57 in overtime, coach Scott Tanaka’s Indians (19-8, 10-2) clinched at least a share of the SPC title with two games left.

“We came out with a great tone defensively and did a great job of executing offensively tonight,” Tanaka said.

“The guys came out refocused. It’s hard

in February when you play every Friday. I was worried since it was their senior night and coach (Tim) Boe always has his kids ready to go. But to our kids’ credit, they were ready to play.”

The Cougars (8-18, 3-9) misfired on their first eight attempts from the floor and also turned the ball over eight times before Kevin Valentine (six points, seven rebounds) hit a jumper with 5:58 left in the first half. Minooka capitalized by going up 12-0 after one quarter and then took a 15-0 lead.

Larry Roberts was called upon to slow down South scoring leader Jacob Buchner, and he certainly was up to the task.

The Cougars senior scored his first basket on a layup with 6:26 left in the third quarter and only wound up with those two points.

“Against Oswego East, we kind of strayed away from our defensive principles a little bit,” Roberts said. “So in practice we really made sure to get back to doing what we usually do. And obviously we showed that today by holding them to seven points in a half, which is a pretty darned good defensive effort.

CHAMPAIGN – Malcolm Hill scored 22 points and had 10 rebounds, and Illinois cruised to an 82-66 victory over Rutgers on Tuesday night.

Illinois (12-14, 4-9 Big Ten) snaps a two-game skid while the Scarlet Knights (6-20, 0-13) have lost 13 straight games, all in conference play.

Maverick Morgan added 17 points and Kendrick Nunn chipped in 16 for the Fighting Illini, who used two big first-half runs to jump out to a 47-25 lead at halftime.

Illinois went on a 13-0 run early in the first half and never looked back, scoring 14 first-half points off 10 Rutgers turnovers.

Jonathan Laurent led Rutgers with 18 points and 10 rebounds, but the Scarlet Knights shot 29 percent from the 3-point range and struggled to get anything going offensively. Mike Williams and Bishop Daniels added 15 points apiece.

The Scarlet Knights were playing without leading-scorer Corey Sanders, who was dealt a two-week suspension Monday for violating team rules.

While South only connected on 3-of-20 shot attempts in the opening half, Minooka was doing a good job of running its offense, turning the ball over just once.

Nick Clemmons led the Indians with 12 points, Roberts added nine points, Joe Butler chipped in with six points and nine rebounds and John Carnagio grabbed six boards.

Ryan Kelly hit three straight treys in the final half to lead the Cougars with 11 points while Nick Welter pulled down eight rebounds.

“If you would have offered me them scoring 47 points, I would have signed up for that right away,” Boe said. “But we have to be able to execute better on the offensive end. The shot wasn’t falling and we couldn’t create any offense with our defense. We just couldn’t get started in the first or second quarter. It’s tough when you fall behind them since they’ll grind it out and you don’t get many easy baskets against them.”

Sox believe they’re ready Going on to contend this time

CHICAGO – This time last year, the White Sox welcomed the start of spring training with visions of a playoff run after a busy offseason they thought would vault them toward the top of the AL Central.

Instead, they fizzled. Now, they vow to make it happen.

With pitchers and catchers set to begin working out this week, they believe they are in a better position than they were a year ago.

Back then, optimism among fans was soaring after the Sox traded for pitcher Jeff Samardzija and signed several big-ticket free agents. But the only team in Chicago to make a playoff run was the one on the North Side.

While the Cubs emerged as one of the best in baseball, the White Sox posted their third straight losing record and finished fourth in their division at 76-86.

What’s changed since then?

The Sox addressed a major issue at third base by trading for All-Star and Home Run Derby winner Todd Frazier. They brought in an athletic infielder with some pop in Brett Lawrie. They upgraded behind the plate with catchers Dioner Navarro and Alex Avila, and added pitching depth with Mat Latos.

If they and the big additions from a year ago deliver as expected, the Sox believe they can contend with ace Chris Sale and slugger Jose Abreu leading the way.

“There’s no doubt in my mind we’re a better team than we were even a year ago as we sat in this room and throughout baseball there was a consensus that we had a good offseason in terms of addressing our needs and putting ourselves in position to contend in 2015,” general manager Rick Hahn said.

The problem last season was slugger Adam LaRoche struggled in a big way. So did Samardzija, who signed with San Francisco in December, as did outfielder Melky Cabrera early on when the season basically slipped away from Chicago. The only big addition who performed about as expected was closer David Robertson, and even he blew seven saves.

With four-time All-Star Sale at the top of the rotation, the Sox believe they have the pitching to compete.

One thing: Their rotation is heavy on left-handers, with Sale, Jose Quintana, Carlos Rodon and John Danks.

Here are some other things to look for as camp opens in Glendale, Arizona: UNDER THE SPOTLIGHT: The scrutiny on manager Robin Ventura figures to intensify if the Sox continue to struggle. He has an expiring contract and it has been nothing but losing records since leading Chicago to 85 wins in his first year in 2012.

CHANGING VIBE: A clubhouse that was more reserved last season might have a little kick to it.

Frazier and Avila are expected to add some leadership that was missing, whether it was because of the language barrier for Jose Abreu, LaRoche’s poor season or Cabrera’s difficulties early on. Lawrie and Latos bring an edge, too.

YOUTH MOVEMENT: The Sox might not wait ’til next year to bring up shortstop Tim Anderson and righthander Carson Fulmer. The organization’s top position and pitching prospects, they won’t be rushed. But they might wind up in the majors at some point this season.

ON THE REBOUND: The Sox are counting on Frazier to add some pop to a team that ranked 28th in the majors in runs despite the presence of Abreu. That means he needs to produce the way he did before his second-half slump last season. Frazier hit .255 with 35 homers and 89 RBIs last season. But he batted just .220 with 10 homers and drove in 32 runs after the All-Star break.

Cook for 3 minutes, then stir in the pasta.

spoons olive oil, then add 4 cloves thinly sliced garlic and cook until just starting to brown. Add 2 diced large tomatoes and 1 finely chopped small red onion.

Cook for 2 minutes, then add 1 pound peeled and deveined cooked shrimp.

Cook just until heated through. Stir in the pasta and add 1 cup torn fresh basil leaves. Serve topped with additional olive oil and shaved Parmesan cheese.

2.Thai Chicken

In a skillet, cook 1 chopped large yellow onion in 1 tablespoon vegetable oil. Add 1 cup grape tomatoes and 2½ cups shredded cooked chicken meat. Stir in a 14½-ounce can light coconut milk and 1 to 2 tablespoons red curry paste.

Bring to a simmer, then add the pasta.

Stir in 1 tablespoon fish sauce, if desired.

Serve with lime wedges and chopped fresh cilantro.

Cook 8 ounces button mushrooms (whole or sliced) in a skillet with a little olive oil. Transfer to a plate, then cook 1 pound thinly sliced flank steak in a bit

Dear Abby: There is a topic I haven’t seen addressed in your column, namely being sexually abused by a spouse.

I ended my marriage because my husband was waking me at 2 a.m. demanding sex. He expected me to have sex only a week after I had our baby, although my doctor had said I should wait six weeks.

If I thought something he wanted me to do was degrading, he insisted I do it anyway.

It amazes me the subject of spousal abuse isn’t mentioned in premarital counseling. No one seems willing to acknowledge this kind of abuse exists.

Is there even a “survivors” network or support group to cope? I went to individual counseling, but it didn’t help me.

I think it would be helpful if society would acknowledge this kind of thing does happen. I also think those who offer premarital counseling should be required to discuss the warning signs of a sexual abuser. – The Ex Mrs.

Massage can relieve back pain Dear Dr. K: My back is always sore. A friend suggested massage therapy might help. Massages are expensive, so I want to make sure there’s some evidence behind this. Is there?

Dear Reader: Massage used to be considered an indulgence. But now it’s recognized as a legitimate therapy for some painful conditions – including back pain.

Therapeutic massage may relieve pain in several ways. It may relax painful muscles, tendons and joints, or relieve stress and anxiety. It even may change the way the brain processes pain signals.

Many types of massage are available in the United States, with Swedish massage being the most common. It involves long, gliding strokes and kneading of the major muscle groups, as well as friction, gentle rhythmic slapping and vibration. Other massage techniques include deep-tissue, pressure-point, Thai and neuromuscular massage. (I’ve put a table describing different types of massage, and what they involve, on my website, www.askdoctork. com.)

Massage therapy also can involve varying degrees of pressure. Massage doesn’t have to be painful to be therapeutic, so be sure to tell your therapist what type of touch you prefer (light touch, firm pressure, hard pressure).

Massage should not be the only treatment you use for back pain. Instead, use massage in addition to standard care. That includes taking anti-inflammatory pain relievers, staying as active as possible, getting physical therapy and giving your body time to heal. When added to the mix, massage can reduce pain and speed your return to normal activities.

Talk to people you know to get a recommendation. Good practitioners get good results and generate positive referrals.

Find out if a medical center in your area has an alternative or integrative medicine program. Such programs typically offer massage by qualified practitioners: people licensed to practice in your state and certified by a national organization such as the American Massage Therapy Association (www.amtamassage.org).

When I was just beginning medical practice, I learned a valuable lesson. A woman in her mid-80s told me she had trouble sleeping. I told her about the various ways to improve her “sleep hygiene,” such as going to bed and getting up at the same time each day, not watching TV while in bed, etc.

When I saw her a few months later, she said a massage therapist had cured her sleep problem – and implied my advice hadn’t done much good. What was keeping her up (as I would have known, had I asked her more questions about her sleep problem) was chronic back pain. That was resolved with massage – and she slept like a baby.

At the bridge table, exceptions keep the game alive. For example, you have J-9-6-4 in the dummy opposite A-Q-10-7 in your hand. To play that suit for four tricks, you should finesse through your right-hand opponent. It gives you a 50-50 shot at avoiding a loser. Instead, to lead the jack and then to put up the ace wins only when lefty has a singleton king, which has an a priori probability of just under three percent. Mathematically, it is a crazy play. But can you think of any reasons why it would be the right play?

Now look at the North-South hands in today’s diagram. South is in four spades. West cashes the club ace and club king before shifting to a heart. How should South continue?

In the bidding, South’s two-club cue-bid was totally artificial, indicating at least 12 points. The rest of the auction was natural.

I can think of three reasons not to finesse in that suit. The first is fanciful: if you know righty will always cover an honor with an honor, regardless of its stupidity. The second will be the theme of tomorrow’s column.

This deal exhibits the third. Dummy has 14 points and declarer has 13.

That leaves only 13 for the opponents, but West opened -- he must have the spade king. So, there is no point in taking a losing finesse; you never know, you might get lucky and drop a singleton king.
