By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Shorewood trustees approved a conditional use permit for a new in-home day care in the Fields of Shorewood neighborhood Tuesday night.

The day care center, at the residence of Fabiola Estrada at 1010 Trillium Lane, would house eight children in the home through the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.

The zoning code allows a home day care in the R-1 Medium Density Single Family Residence district with a conditional use.

Community Development Director Karen James said the day care is contingent on getting a license from DCFS, otherwise the board action is “null and void” one year after Tuesday.

“With in-home day cares, we restrict to 12 children per house,” James said, noting the home has to be compliant

Trustees also approved an amended site plan for two of three buildings at the Heartland Corporate Center to benefit the operations of Bob’s Discount Furniture.

The Heartland Corporate Center requested constructing 41 additional parking stalls for trucks and trailers on the eastern side of the trailer area for Building C, the westernmost structure for the development at 21100 SW Frontage Road.

Heartland officials also want to change the design of the cul-de-sac at the west end of Building A to allow emergency vehicles to turn around in the parking lot.

“It actually resulted in a nicer design,” James said.

Other items

The Village Board also discussed and approved several other items.

• Purchase of a 2016 Peterbilt Model 348 plow truck for $178,457.03, which will help the village during freezing weather with slushy snow by adding a belly-plow scraper. The new truck won’t be active this winter season, according to Public Works Supervisor Chris Drey.

• Site plan amendment approval for United Site Services at 24140 Seil Road allowing expansion of a fenced outdoor storage area.

• Purchase of a Vermeer BC1800XL brush chipper for $64,793 to replace a 10-year-old chipper for the public works department.

• Mayor Rick Chapman welcomed trustees to call the village’s attorneys for any questions on tax increment financing districts, after the Phase II consulting approval last meeting for a district at the Route 59 and Route 52 economic corridors.

Will, Grundy students named semifinalists for National Merit Scholarship Program The HERALD–NEWS EVANSTON – More than a dozen local students were named Tuesday as being among the 16,000 semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

The semifinalists have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 7,400 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $32 million that will be offered next spring, according to a news release from the organization.

Elwood-based Army Reserve transportation company completes training mission

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – This Army Reserve unit stopped rolling Tuesday.

The 459th Transportation Company completed its participation in a nationwide training mission about 2:40 p.m. when its trucks arrived at the training facility on Arsenal Road in Elwood. Soldiers made a caravan through Canada, loaded equipment on a ship to Puerto Rico and moved ammunition across the Eastern Seaboard.

Before the troops arrived Brig. Gen. Jonathan McColumn and his staff told Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk and Elwood Village Administrator Nick Narducci about the importance of being ready to move large and specialized equipment within the country when there’s a disaster like Hurricane Katrina or to send it overseas for war.

“Whether it’s delivering food or personnel or longrange missiles, it’s needed.

That’s the mission,” said Spc. Bobbi Brakebill of Joliet.

In recent weeks, 56 soldiers took 42 vehicles from Camp Atterbury in Indiana to Camp Grayling in Michigan. Sgt. Bryanna Andersen of Plainfield said knowing the load weights and capabilities of vehicles ranging from Hummers to tank-carrying semitrailers was a vital part of the training mission. She said vehicle breakdowns were the biggest challenge.

“The order of march depends on experience. And the wrecker’s in the back so you don’t have to turn around if a vehicle has [mechanical] problems,” she said.

“You wouldn’t put a brand new private in the lead,” said Sgt. Lance Barrett of Naperville. “You learn and see who knows what tiedown you need for equipment [to] get it moving.”

McColumn expects the military will continue training jointly with allies like Canada.

The Maple Caravan part of the mission had 12 convoys moving 28 pieces of equipment and more than 200 containers.

“Driving longer and longer than on a weekend exercise is more realistic of what would be needed if these soldiers are deployed,” McColumn said.

“Even having road signs in Quebec in a foreign language was as it would be overseas.”

McColumn told the soldiers they are not viewed as a strategic reserve, but an operational one.

“Everywhere you [could] go, you should know your job.

The ceremony concluded with a chaplain leading a prayer of thanks and the com-

pany singing the Army song.

The soldiers then set a self-imposed deadline to have their trucks completely cleaned out in 30 minutes.

“When I was younger I drove past [the training facility] all the time,” Andersen said. “There was a big sense of pride coming into it today.”

JJC breaks ground on expansion More online

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Joliet Junior College officials broke ground on yet another facility Tuesday, this time to accommodate student growth at its Romeoville campus.

Tuesday marked the beginning of the first significant construction at the campus since it opened in 1993, JJC officials said. A new building – slated to be 49,392 square feet – will be constructed to meet the space and academic needs of a growing student population.

The project is slated for completion in 2017.

“Romeoville and the surrounding communities in this portion of our district have seen continuous residential and business growth,” said Robert Wunderlich, chairman of the JJC Board of Trustees, at the groundbreaking ceremony.

“Enrollment at this JJC location alone has grown 45 percent in the last 10 years.”

The new building is part of JJC’s Master Plan, which is focused on construction and improvement projects for the college. With enrollment of about 4,000 students, the Romeoville campus is “experiencing the most pronounced growth,” compared to other campuses, according to the plan.

The Romeoville project represents more than expansion for JJC President Debra Daniels.

“Putting shovels in the ground today is more than just a symbolic gesture of the begin-

ning of this project,” she said.

“It is a reaffirmation of our commitment to teaching and learning, and continuing our tradition of being a resource to the community.”

Romeoville Mayor John Noak said JJC has been key to the village’s economic growth, and for years he’s been looking forward to the campus expan-

sion.

“This is one of the most exciting [projects],” he said. “This continues to be a game changer. This location adds so much vibrance to our community in terms of bringing students in and out throughout the day.”

JJC has moved forward on several projects this year.

On Aug. 25, the college

broke ground at the Joliet campus for the two-level Multipurpose Facility, which will house athletic activities and programs, as well as graduation ceremonies.

The Romeoville campus expansion and the Multipurpose Facility will be funded with a $45 million bond issuance and $4 capital assessment fee increase, college officials have said.

Before the groundbreaking of the Multipurpose Facility, JJC board trustees and officials met at the Joliet downtown Renaissance Center to discuss its renovation. The college has owned the property since 1980.

In June, JJC decided to move forward with interior work for the City Center campus project after struggling to secure state funding. The 96,000-square-foot building will house adult education, literacy, workforce development and culinary arts resources.

JJC board trustees select former member for vacant spot

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – The Joliet Junior College Board of Trustees decided to fill a spot on the board with a familiar face.

Joliet attorney Daniel O’Connell was unanimously approved by trustees at Tuesday’s board meeting to fill the seat left vacant by former Chairman Jeff May, who re-

signed in July for health reasons. O’Connell previously was a board trustee from 2007 to 2013.

“I felt there was a need for me to come back,” O’Connell said.

He said he thinks he can provide input on the configuration of the board. One goal for him as trustee is opening the City Center campus building.

The board has two more spots to fill after former Chairwoman Tina Markley and trustee Barb Adams resigned in August. Before resigning, Markley accused board trustees of engaging in internal board politics and not guiding her in the role of board chairwoman. Adams resigned with her but without explanation.

The deadline for applica-

tions was Friday, and trustees plan to examine the candidates at a 6 p.m. Thursday meeting.

Wunderlich said the remaining seats on the board should be filled by an October meeting. The board is meant to have seven elected members, plus an appointed student trustee.

O’Connell owns Daniel F. O’Connell, Attorney at Law in

Joliet. He has practiced law in Will County since 1982. He has a J.D. from Northern Illinois University and a bachelor of arts degree from Lewis University.

Wunderlich has said anyone who applied before 5 p.m.

Friday will be in the running for Markley’s and Adams’ seats, including possibly the finalists who were not selected for the seat Tuesday.

LOCAL BRIEFS Gunfight leads to car crash in Joliet Township

JOLIET TOWNSHIP – A reported shootout Monday night between two vehicles resulted in one of the cars flipping onto the front yard of a Joliet Township home.

The driver of the crashed vehicle was found nearby with multiple bullet wounds that were not life-threatening and treated at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, according to a Will County Sheriff’s Office news release.

The office was dispatched about 11:30 p.m. to the 1300 block of Sugar Creek Drive for a shots fired complaint, the news release stated.

Witnesses told sheriff’s deputies two vehicles were driving down Sugar Creek Drive shooting at each other when one of the vehicles, a Ford Taurus, crashed and flipped onto the front yard of a home on the 400 block of Manhattan Road, according to the news release.

vehicle with several bullet holes at its rear, according to the news release.

Witnesses also told deputies their vehicle was struck with a bullet while driving north on Sugar Creek Drive, according to the release. The driver and two passengers ducked when they heard gunshots, but no one was injured.

Joliet police assisting sheriff’s deputies in a search of the area found a 38-year-old man on Manhattan Road near Mills Road with multiple gunshot wounds, the release stated.

The man was identified as the driver of the crashed vehicle and was treated for one gunshot wound to his back, one to his left thigh and one grazing his left outer thigh, according to the news release.

The incident remained under investigation as of Tuesday evening.

A man was in the house on the 2800 block of Cole Lane when the fire started, but he escaped safely and there were no injuries, according to a news release from the New Lenox Fire Protection District.

The district received a call for a residential structure fire at the two-story home about 1:30 p.m.

When first responders arrived on scene, they noted the building had heavy attic smoke damage, the news release stated. The district went into a full-still alarm and the fire was extinguished within 40 minutes.

The total cost of the damage wasn’t available and the cause of the fire was under investigation as of Tuesday afternoon, according to the release. But New Lenox Fire Chief Steve Engledow said the home was left uninhabitable.

“Most of the damage was done to the roof, attic and second floor,” Engledow said, adding the first floor had water damage.

PLAINFIELD – Ready Set Ride Therapeutic Recreation Facility in Plainfield may need to downsize and let go of some of its 15 therapy horses if it doesn’t raise $25,000 in donations this year.

Ready Set Ride Director Lisa Afshari is looking for more donors to help cover the overhead for maintaining horses after a tough season.

“The weather wasn’t great this summer,” she said. “We encountered some medical issues this year for some of the horses.”

The sporadic, rainy weather hasn’t led to lower enrollment, but to higher veterinary bills, Afshari said.

Ready Set Ride, 13056 Essington Road in Plainfield, uses horse riding and companionship to address the special needs of terminally ill children. Parents from throughout the Joliet and Naperville areas sign up their children for therapy sessions.

Along with monetary donations, the nonprofit facility is looking for businesses, organizations and individuals to donate items such as gift cards, event passes, weekend getaways and sports apparel.

The donated items will be used for the facility’s 10th annual fundraiser auction Oct. 30. The fundraiser is held primarily to raise money for the cost of maintaining the horses during winter.

“Unfortunately, we’re in this spot every year,” Afshari said. “The horses, they’re here 24/7. They eat, and I have to take out a dumpster every other week just for the waste.”

While the facility has about 10 volunteers who work four hours a day to help take care of the horses, Afshari said state grants for projects such as fixing the facility’s fencing have been put on hold.

Officials push for stricter rules for quarry debris

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County officials are pushing back against a state board’s Aug. 6 decision to forgo stricter regulations for dumping construction debris into retired, unlined quarries.

Mary Tatroe, with the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, said the office plans to file an intent to appeal the Illinois Pollution Control Board’s decision by Thursday.

County Board member Suzanne Hart, R-Naperville, who is chairwoman for the board’s Legislative Committee, said Tuesday the dumped materials could pose a serious risk for groundwater contamination at the county’s active sites.

Local officials want groundwater monitoring to be a requirement to ensure quarry landfill facility operators are following regulations for acceptable materials.

Hart said she believes the IPCB’s current rules – adopted in 2012 after a series of public hearings – do not go far enough to protect residents. “[Former Legislative Chairwoman Lee Ann Goodson], I remember her saying this when I first got on the board: ‘Once this gets into the water tank, there’s no turning back.’ We can’t do this. We owe this to our residents,” Hart said during Tuesday’s committee meeting.

The rules enacted by the IPCB allow the disposal of socalled “clean” construction and demolition debris – such as uncontaminated soil, asphalt pavement and concrete – in Will County and other state quarries. The rules do not require groundwater monitoring.

But Marie Tipsord, hearing officer for rulemaking on the topic, said Tuesday the state board looked extensively into groundwater monitoring in 2013 before issuing a 67-page

opinion on the matter Aug. 6.

Hearings – in which Will County officials, environmental groups and business community members participated – were held weighing the pros and cons before the board chose not to move forward with groundwater monitoring requirements, she said.

“Some of the things that came out during the hearings just were not sufficient to convince us that what’s already in place won’t protect groundwater,” Tipsord said.

Will County officials also plan to pursue legislation that requires groundwater monitoring.

Legislative Committee member Bob Howard, D-Beecher, said he’s concerned about the uphill battle the county faces in the fight for required groundwater monitoring.

“There’s a lot of pushback from the business community on this,” Howard said.

Will County Sheriff’s Office inundated with inmates’ FOIA requests

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County officials have been getting an ever-increasing amount of Freedom of Information Act requests from jail inmates.

Since Jan. 1, the county sheriff’s records division has received 530 FOIA requests – with 321 of those stemming from inmates housed at the Adult Detention Facility, Undersheriff Robert Contro stated in an email Tuesday.

The state’s FOIA law often is used by citizens, researchers and journalists to access public information, but county inmates appear to be making a habit out of requesting information that “doesn’t really apply” to anything related to public safety at the jail or public concerns, Contro told members of the Will County Board’s Legislative Committee on Tuesday.

Some inmates are requesting other inmates’ police reports, Contro said.

And it’s taking a toll on payroll and staff hours, according to Contro. Staff have invested more than 420 hours since March into replying to FOIA requests, which have strict state-mandated turnaround deadlines.

“If you break that into weeks, one full-time employee would have worked on [FOIA requests] for [10.5] weeks,” he said.

County Board Speaker Jim Moustis, R-Frankfort, who attended Tuesday’s meeting, said he’s concerned about how many of the requests are legitimate and how many are produced to create work for the sheriff’s office.

“I bet you they’ll [request] anything. They want to see nutrition labels for the food or whatever,” Moustis said.

Homer Glen school evacuated after threat

HOMER GLEN – A bomb threat kept students out of William E. Young Elementary School in Homer Glen on Tuesday morning.

About 8 a.m., staffers listened to voice messages left over the weekend and learned a man had called saying there was a bomb in the building at 16240 S. Cedar Road, according to Will County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer.

Hoffmeyer said students and staff evacuated to Luther J. Schilling School across the street, and deputies searched the campus.

The DuPage County Bomb Squad also was called to search the school with dogs.

The school was given an “all clear” at 11:55 a.m., according to Hoffmeyer.

Plainfield man dies after Aurora party shooting

DOWNERS GROVE – A Plainfield man died Sunday after being shot during a party in Aurora.

Derrick Page, 23, died at 9:41 a.m. at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Aurora police said in a statement.

About 12:45 a.m. Saturday, Page was at a large party at a rental hall in the 600 block of North Lake Street. A disturbance inside the building caused attendees to flee outside toward Illinois Avenue, where Page was shot in the head, according to the statement.

Investigators have not released any suspect descriptions, but have asked anyone with information to call 630-256-5500 or to anonymously call CrimeStoppers at 630-892-1100.

NEW LENOX – New Lenox Area Historical Society’s quilt project is coming to a close.

More than 70 residents already have signed quilt squares, but a few more family and group squares are available before quilters assemble the quilt.

More than 120 years ago members of the New Lenox village created a quilt as a community project, according to a news release from project coordinators.

That quilt is a prized possession of the New Lenox Area Historical Society. It is fragile now and must be handled with gloved hands, but it will be on display when the historical museum opens.

A modern version of the memory quilt is being created with names of today’s citizens. The new signature quilt is entitled, “New Lenox-Home of Proud Americans.”

Both new and longtime residents are invited to take part in this historic project. Groups and businesses, large and small, also may buy squares.

OBITUARIES BERNADETTE C. AYERS Bernadette C. Ayers (nee Stewart), age 76, of Plainfield, passed away peacefully Monday, September 7, 2015 at home surrounded by her loving family.

Born May 18, 1939 in Chicago, she grew up in Visitation Parish, Chicago, and was a graduate of Holy Family Academy in Beaverville, IL. She retired from Jewel Foods on Larkin Avenue after 20 years of service as a cashier. While her children were in school, she coached basketball and volleyball at St. Mary Immaculate School. She was a member of St. Mary Immaculate Parish since 1972.

Bernadette was a loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother who will be remembered for her selflessness and helping others.

She was a wonderful homemaker whose cooking and baking will be missed. She loved nature, music, playing cards and bingo, dancing, and especially playing with her grandchildren. The world will never be the same without her.

Survived by her loving and devoted husband of 56 years, John R. “Jack” Ayers of Plainfield; three daughters, Kimberly C. Sarcletti, Kelly Ayers and Teriann Girard; six grandchildren, Rachel Mary, Michelle and Nicholas Sarcletti and John “Jack”, Samantha and Michael Girard; two sisters, Darlene (Donald) Bermingham and Marilyn (late John) Connolly; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceded by parents, Peter and Cecelia Stewart; two brothers, Peter Stewart and William Stewart; and Rosemary Stewart who was both mother and sister to her.

The family would like to thank her dedicated and gentle caregivers, Stacy Avino, Aubrey Fassiotto and Danielle Craft.

Bill was a graduate of Lockport High School and earned his BS and MS in Special Education from NIU. He was employed by the Joliet Township High Schools as a Special Education Teacher, Division Chair, and Director of Special Services for 35 years. Bill was known as a passionate advocate for those with special needs. Bill was happiest when surrounded by his loving family and was very proud of his sons, nieces and nephews.

He was always willing to lend a helping hand. He will be remembered fondly for his quick wit, great sense of humor and dedication to his family.

Helen Burns Jackson, mother of Jesse Jackson, dies at 92 The ASSOCIATED PRESS GREENVILLE, S.C. – Helen Burns Jackson, the mother of civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, has died. She was 92.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson told The Associated Press his mother died Monday morning in her longtime hometown of Greenville, South Carolina.

She had been in failing health for some time, he said.

“She was an incredible woman blessed with a long life,” Jackson said.

Jackson described his mother as a talented musician, active member of her church and big inspiration for much of his community

activism. Born in 1923, Helen Burns Jackson “lived under very trying circumstances, but she was so determined to make a contribution,” her son said.

Jackson said his mother had two scholarships to attend college, but when she became pregnant with him, she chose not to go. She later became a cosmetologist.

“She helped a lot of people,” Jackson told The Greenville News a few days before she died. “That’s mostly what I remember about Mother is some people would call and say ‘I need my hair to be dressed, but I don’t have any money.’ She would say, ‘Come on anyhow.’ ”

SANDRA COLEMAN Sandra Coleman, age 53 years, died suddenly Monday, September 1st, 2015, at her residence after a lingering illness.

Born in Joliet, she was a lifelong resident. Formerly employed at Northern Illinois Gas. Joliet West class of 1980.

A member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Preceded in death by father, one sister and stepfather.

He completed the Greer School of Heavy Equipment. Dale retired from the Cement Mason’s Union, Local 161, following 40 years of employment. Owned and operated D & D Upholstery in South Wilmington.

His family and friends were blessed to have him the last 15 years after receiving a heart transplant.

He was known for his kindness and generosity.

Surviving are his devoted wife, Lynn; two sons and daughters-inlaw, Tim and Angie Grieff of East Brooklyn, IL and Todd and Stacia Grieff of Coal City, IL; five grandchildren, Cadee, Colby, Levi, Ryker, and Oakley; sister, Donna Muzzarelli of Pontiac, IL; two brothers-in-law, David (Sandi) Lardi of Gardner, IL and Larry (Marilyn) Lardi of East Brooklyn; special niece, Shawna Lardi; and nieces and nephews.

Pete was a lifelong Joliet resident attending Farragut Grade School and Joliet Township High School. He attended Indiana University graduating in 1953, with both a degree in Business Administration and a commission in the U.S. Army. Peter served in the Army for 2 years including an 18 month tour in Germany. Pete met his future bride Connie at Indiana University and they married in 1954.

Upon his return to Joliet from the service, he joined the family business - Bates Insurance Agency, continuing until he retired in 1995 to support his wife in her battle with cancer. Peter lost Connie, the love of his life and his biggest supporter, in 1996.

Peter’s involvement in the Joliet community started at an early age.

In 1945, as a newspaper boy for the Herald News, he earned the 4 star award for war stamp sales presented to him by the Treasury Department.

As an adult, Peter was active in supporting youth activities such as the Boy Scouts, and YMCA Indian Guides as well as leadership positions in Young Republicans, the University Club and the YMCA City Club. For the past 40 years he was a trustee of the Lambert Fund for Children.

Pete passed away peacefully and on his own terms with family by his side when his body could no longer keep up with his spirit. He was an avid genealogist and reveled in the chase for family history. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, being an excellent father and role model,

Madigan finds self dealt major defeat SPRINGFIELD – The only can to get kicked down the road last week was Mike Madigan’s.

For three decades, Madigan has been Illinois’ most powerful politician.

Governors come and go.

Madigan stays.

In the history of the United States, no one has led a state legislative body longer than Mike Madigan.

No one.

He is the personification of the old-time political boss.

He demands adherence from legislators and in return doles out campaign cash, committee assignments and, if they are really good, he might even allow their legislation to be voted upon.

He’s a shrewd, calculating individual who rarely loses.

In fact, “Never bet against Mike Madigan” has become perhaps the most repeated axiom at the Illinois Statehouse in the many years I’ve been in Springfield.

What Mike Madigan really wants, he gets.

Reporters, lawmakers and other political insiders were left rolling their eyes last Wednesday night when Madigan claimed never to have pressured anyone to vote a particular way.

It was theater of the absurd.

Madigan rules like a despot.

If someone crosses him, it’s done with trepidation.

That’s why state Rep. Ken Dunkin’s actions were profound.

Madigan needed all 71 of his members to show up Wednesday and vote as one to override a veto by Gov. Bruce Rauner. The measure in question was a political gift to organized labor that

One member was hauled out of a Chicago hospital bed to answer Madigan’s call.

Others canceled other plans to make sure they were Springfield.

But not Dunkin, a Chicago Democrat.

In an act of passive resistance, he didn’t show up, leaving Madigan one vote short.

He may as well have stuck his finger in the speaker’s eye.

And Dunkin’s move may well have emboldened two other members of Madigan’s caucus to defect as well.

So Madigan lost. Big time.

A fissure is developing in his once-impregnable wall of obedience.

We saw hints of it last year when Madigan failed to muster enough votes to put a “millionaire tax” on the ballot.

But the Sept. 2 vote stands out because Madigan invested so much of his political capital into engineering a win but instead manufactured a defeat.

Yes, Madigan is still the most powerful politician in Illinois. But last week, people began wondering whether the Madigan era is drawing to a close.

To the Editor: In response to U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk’s view printed Aug. 30 in The Herald-News, Kirk may have started all the things he talks about, but they do not work.

On June 25, I wrote a twopage letter that was sent to his email, vets@kirk.senate. gov, with four very specific problems that deal with myself and the Joliet Clinic. I never received an answer or even that it was received. My computer said it had been received.

On or about the end of July, beginning of August, I called his office and spoke with his veteran person. I even faxed him a copy of what I wrote. I still have heard nothing.

It seems Washington talks the talk but really fails to walk

the walk when it comes to all veterans.

Remember our troops when they return home

To the Editor: In the midst of the crises around the world, it’s easy to lose sight of the ones happening here at home.

Conservative estimates are that 22 U.S. veterans take their own lives each day. Compared to time in direct combat operations, we as a country are losing more military men and women at home than we did when they went off to fight wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

One of the factors that should be causing a national outcry is how we treat our veterans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder. The FDA

approved “cocktails” for PTSD that are administered by the Veterans’ Health Administration rely heavily on large doses of addictive opiates, and a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors that have suicidal thoughts as a known side effect.

In states that have implemented a medical cannabis program, they have reported on average a reduction in suicides by 10 percent in the first year they operate, combined with at least a 20 percent reduction in opiate-based overdoses.

It’s time we gave our veterans a fighting chance back here at home. It’s time we added PTSD as a qualifying condition to the Illinois Medical Cannabis Pilot Program.

Lincoln-Way Central fought hard, but Providence held off the Knights for a 25-23, 25-20 nonconference victory that it needed to stay above .500.

It wasn’t the prettiest match for the Celtics to start with, however.

“We did play down in the first set,” senior middle Katie Compagno said. “In the second set, we started communicating. We all did that, and we were successful.”

Central’s sophomore setter, Kylie Kulinski, started the game with an ace against the Celtics (5-3), a normally strong serve-receive team. Throughout the rest of the first game,

Providence’s back row had trouble communicating and played balls that were out of bounds.

Fortunately for Providence, its strong hitting won Game 1.

“Every time we play, we’re doing something better,” Celtics coach Brie Isaacson said.

“I think we struggled a little bit today with setting the tone that we were going to play at – and part of that’s them [Knights], and part of that is us. We’ll take any wins that we

can get. We have good competition all around us. I definitely see some improvements, but definitely still have a lot to work on.”

If Providence improved on one thing this game, it was having an involved middle offense.

Compagno and junior middle Caitlin Stephens led the Celtics’ offense with four kills each in Game 1. Compagno had five kills (.714 hitting percentage) and Stephens four

kills (.600 hitting percentage).

“We just did really well,” Compagno said. “We were set well, and we pounded it. We were aggressive and brought the team up. We both are working really hard.”

Providence stepped up in the second game with better passing and better defense.

Senior libero Emily Boggetto led with 10 digs. Alles (six), Flynders (five), Compagno (four), Vanderway (three), Smagala (two), Brenna Harper (two) and Stephens (one) also had digs.

At the net, Providence also was strong, with Compagno and Alles combining twice for blocks and Poulos and Stephens teaming up for one. Poulos and Smagala both had overpass blocks to add to a total of five team blocks.

On the other side of the

net, Lincoln-Way Central (1-6) struggled in both areas of defense.

“I think we cleaned up our serve-receive. We did pretty well,” Central coach Jodi Frigo said. “As I told my team, our defense and our block were nonexistent, and that definitely hurt us. We’re young, and we have to find other hitters to come out.

“I will give it, my girls fight until the end. They’re not going to die and roll over.

They’re still playing through the whole match, but we’re still looking for those other younger athletes to feel that confidence and start stepping up.”

Three players who provided the fight for Central were its outsides and setter, senior Toni Leitshuh, along with sophomore Dominique Dixon and Kulinski.

Kulinski played consistently throughout and totaled 15

assists and eight digs. She also played to Central’s strengths each game and set the hot hitter.

The first game was close because of Dixon, who earned six of her eight kills then. After being contained to three kills in Game 1, Leitshuh lit it up in the second with four hard kills and seven total.

Even though the victory over Lincoln-Way Central wasn’t pretty, Providence takes it as a learning lesson.

The Celtics know what they need to work on. They will play important matches such as against Joliet Catholic on Monday.

That’s what Quigley did during her career with St. Patrick Grade School, JCA, DePaul University and throughout her pro career. When she was the star, she continued to work. When she was hanging on in the professional ranks, she kept at it, kept giving her all, until opportunity knocked.

When it came, she was ready.

Quigley’s first season with the Sky was 2013. She played in all 34 games and averaged 3.8 points. That wasn’t good enough for her.

In 2014, she took advantage of the chance to log more minutes, and her WNBA career zoomed. She began playing some point guard in addition to shooting guard and averaged 11.2 points and 2.2 rebounds. She was named the WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year.

The 2015 Sky, which has clinched a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference, is 20-12 with two regular-season games remaining. Quigley has played in the 30 games that took place while she was in the country. She also has Hungarian citizenship and played for the Hungarian National team in an international com-

When Allie Quigley walked out of the Joliet Catholic Academy Student Activity Center early Monday afternoon, she might have been suffering from writer’s cramp.

She had just signed everything for everybody, not to mention posing for scores of photos with the young girls who attended the Allie Quigley Angels & Saints Basketball Camp, and with many of their siblings and parents.

The Chicago Sky guard and JCA graduate, the reigning Sixth Woman of the Year in the WNBA, is a local celebrity. You never would know it, however, by watching her interact at the camp, or from talking with her.

“I used to go to camps all the time when I was a young girl,” said Quigley, who at 29 is in her third season with the Sky and soon will add to her European career, which has spanned eight seasons.

“I just wanted to come here and do something for these girls. It’s awesome to be here.

I saw some good talent here.

There are some future great players.”

The Labor Day camp was a cooperative effort between JCA girls coach Kenny Battle and his staff and University of St. Francis women’s coach Sam Quigley, Allie’s sister, and her staff. All the campers – numbering between 65 and 70 after a large walk-up – received a Sky basketball, a bag and a T-shirt.

“The main thing I told these girls is never give up,” Allie Quigley said. “I was in their shoes and heard all

Warriors overcome Indians to reach 7-1 AREA SCHEDULE

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Lincoln-Way West’s girls volleyball team is young this season, with only four seniors on its roster.

But those seniors – Katie Davis, Olivia DeGroot, Jackie Moore and Brooke Robbins – possess important leadership responsibilities for the squad, and coach Rory Olson is thrilled to have the four captains showing the way for the Warriors.

West continued its good start to the season Tuesday when it captured a 25-18, 2516 nonconference victory at Lemont. The Warriors, who improved to 7-1, suffered their lone loss to Yorkville in last week’s Joliet Central Invite, where they won the silver division title.

“I really have a great group of seniors,” Olson said. “There’s leadership all around, and whether the four of them are on the court or off of it, they’re leading and picking each other up, and it’s great to see them play like that. They’re great at following the game plan. That type of leadership is encouraging, since sometimes it’s hard to find at the high school level.

“I feel like everyone did a good job of fighting for anything by either hitting the floor for a ball or anticipating where a ball was going to go.

I see players communicating with other people in their position and telling them things they see. It’s great that they work together.”

Lemont (5-4) only led after the initial point of the match when Olivia Whittingham (six kills) recorded a kill. The Indians managed one tie and kept close in the opening set, forcing an early tie in the finale before the Warriors began to pull away.

Although Lemont coach Chris Zogata has seen encouraging signs from her squad at times this year, Tuesday’s match was not among them.

West’s serving not only took the Indians out of their game, but also caused them to struggle with their own serving.

In the opener, West jumped out to a 9-4 lead, with Cassie Ruettiger (17 digs) behind the service line. But Lemont pulled to within 9-8 after two aces from Gemma Cantone.

Play stayed tight until the Warriors went on a spurt to go up, 17-12, on a kill and an ace from Davis (two blocks, 13 assists, three aces) and a kill from DeGroot (six kills).

Lemont couldn’t get any closer than three points back for the rest of that set.

“We’ve worked so hard and are off to a 7-1 start, so it’s been a great season so far,” Davis said. “All four of the seniors bring something unique to the team. And we’re all very hard-working, and we don’t like to give up, so we’ll just keep pursuing the ball and not give up in a game. I’m so excited about the rest of our season.”

Although there’s still a long way to go, the Warriors are encouraged by their quick start and hope it is just the beginning of a special season for them.

“We’ve been putting in a lot of hard work in every practice, and we all have a lot of fun, which really helps since we work together and want everyone to succeed,” DeGroot said. “Each of our four seniors brings something nice to the table, and I think we’re good role models for the younger girls. We’ve had a great start to our season, and we’re a really close-knit team.

There’s no drama, which is really great.”

SEC sets a record with 10 teams in AP Top 25

By RALPH D. RUSSO The Associated Press The Southeastern Conference has a record 10 teams ranked in the first Associated Press college football poll of the regular season.

Ohio State remained a unanimous No. 1 after pulling away, 42-24, at Virginia Tech on Monday night.

The SEC already held the record for most teams from one conference in the Top 25 with eight, a mark it matched in the preseason.

After the conference went 12-1 to open the season, No. 16 Texas A&M and No. 25 Mississippi State moved into the poll to go with the eight teams already there.

Alabama moved up a spot to No. 2. The rest of the SEC roll call is: No. 6 Auburn, No. 10 Georgia, No. 14 LSU, No. 17 Mississippi, No. 18 Arkansas, No. 20 Missouri and No. 23 Tennessee.

Poll points

The SEC has been dominating the AP poll in recent years and has had eight ranked teams six times in the regular season and three times in the preseason.

The Big Ten and the Atlantic Coast conferences each have had a high of seven teams ranked in the AP Top 25. The Big Ten has done it five times. The ACC has had seven twice. in the Big Ten championship game and Alabama and Oregon in the College Football Playoff. He completed 3 of 4 passes on the first drive, right on the money with every throw, including a 24yard touchdown to Curtis Samuel.

The Pac-12’s high for ranked teams is six, including in this season’s preseason poll and last season’s final rankings. The most ranked teams the Big 12 ever has had in the AP Top 25 is six, which happened for three weeks in 2011.

Dropped out

Teams dropping out of the rankings were Arizona State and Stanford, part of a lackluster 7-5 start to the season for the Pac-12. Wisconsin also dropped out of the rankings after losing to Alabama.

Stepping in

On the bright side of the Pac-12’s opening weekend, Utah moved into the rankings at No. 24 with its victory against Michigan in coach Jim Harbaugh’s debut with the Wolverines.

Week 2 ranked matchups

• No. 8 Oregon at No. 5 Michigan State. For the second straight season, Ducks-Spartans is a Top10 matchup that could give the winner a major boost to its playoff résumé.

• No. 14 LSU at No. 25 Mississippi State. The Tigers

get no tuneup after their opener against McNeese State was cancelled because of lightning.

• No. 19 Oklahoma at No. 23 Tennessee. Another chance for the SEC to make a statement or be just a little bit humbled.

Jones finished 9 for 18 for 186 yards and rumbled for 99 yards on the ground, including a 10-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter that made it 35-17 for the Buckeyes.

“I’d expect more,” Meyer said of Jones.

Drivers won’t get new rules package for Chase

By JENNA FRYER The Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Moments after Carl Edwards climbed from his winning Southern 500 car, he began lobbying for NASCAR to apply the rules package used at Darlington Raceway in the upcoming playoffs.

Edwards and his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates are among the loudest supporters of an aerodynamic package that has been experimented with twice this summer, most recently Sunday night at Darlington Raceway. Although his drivers want the low-downforce package used in the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup championship, team owner Joe Gibbs is content using the much-maligned current rules.

“There’s some things that I can’t change, and NASCAR said, ‘Hey, look, we’re not going to go changing things and go to a different package for the Chase,’ and I think that’s fair,” Gibbs said Tuesday in a telephone interview.

NASCAR did indeed announce Aug. 14 the current package will be used in the Chase, which begins next week.

The decision came five weeks before the playoffs begin, and Gibbs agreed with NASCAR’s rationale there wasn’t enough time for teams to prepare for a new package that would be when the stakes are the highest.

“That’s fair, and that will be a fair way for us to approach the Chase this year,” he said.

That’s in direct contrast to what the sport’s biggest stars

want.

NASCAR chairman Brian France has tasked his upper management with improving the on-track product, which has become increasingly boring this year. The poor on-track product came as a bit of a surprise after the dramatic racing that occurred in last fall’s 10race playoffs.

As the quality of racing deteriorated throughout the spring, NASCAR decided to in-season test some different aerodynamic packages. The tests, however, came during actual Sprint Cup races, giving fans a glimpse of three different ideas: the current rules package; the low-downforce package used at Kentucky and Darlington; and a high-drag package used at Indianapolis and Michigan.

The current rules aren’t satisfying anyone, and the low-drag package did nothing to improve the racing. But the low-downforce package has wide support, mostly because the majority of the elite drivers strongly back these rules, which make the cars difficult to handle and forces the wheelmen to up their game.

“It separates the racecar drivers from the pretenders, and that’s the way it should be,” said Darlington runner-up Brad Keselowski.

It’s quite possible NASCAR ultimately will use a version of the low-downforce package when setting the 2016 rules, and series executive vice president Steve O’Donnell seemed to indicate after Sunday’s race that the sanctioning body was pleased with the show at Darlington.

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Cardale Jones swears he did not know who would start at quarterback for Ohio State until Urban Meyer told him, instead of J.T. Barrett, to go in for the Buckeyes’ first series against Virginia Tech.

“Both of us had our mouth pieces in looking at each other. Should we step to the sideline? Should we step to the field? Coach Meyer was like, ‘Go, Cardale,’ ” Jones said about that slightly awkward moment Monday night when a winner finally was declared in the eight-month miniseries that has been the Ohio State quarterback competition.

Jones started, threw two touchdowns and ran for another as the top-ranked Buckeyes beat Virginia Tech, 4224. Barrett, last year’s Big Ten player of the year, has been relegated to best backup quarterback in the country – at least for now.

“I don’t think the battle is over,” Jones said.

Neither does Meyer. He said he gave some serious thought to switching to Barrett after Jones struggled in the second quarter and threw a bad interception. But he felt the 6-foot-5, 250-pound Jones would be the best guy to go up against a Virginia Tech defense that put a lot of bodies in the quarterback’s face.

And that’s the way it’s going to be all season.

“We’re going to ride my opinion in that moment,” Meyer said. “In that situation to drive the ball down the field to score, who should be in the game? J.T. has to stay warm. If J.T.’s in the game, Cardale has to stay warm.

Is that the right thing to do?

At this point, it is. Will that change and adapt throughout the year? I don’t know. Remains to be seen.”

Castro, Rizzo lead Cubs to victory over St. Louis The ASSOCIATED PRESS ST. LOUIS – Starlin Castro and Anthony Rizzo homered and combined for seven RBIs and the Cubs earned their fifth straight win, beating the St. Louis Cardinals, 8-5, in the middle game of a three-game series on Tuesday night.

The Cardinals have the best record in the majors at 87-51, but have dropped five of six. Their lead over Pittsburgh in the NL Central slipped to 4½ games. The Cubs are 6½back and are second in the NL wild card race behind the Pirates.

St. Louis was down, 8-0, and had been outscored, 24-1, over three games before pinch-hitter Randal Grichuk sparked a

AP source: DA postpones grand jury hearing on Kane The ASSOCIATED PRESS BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Erie County District Attorney has postponed grand jury proceedings into a sexual assault allegation against Blackhawks star forward Patrick Kane, a person familiar with the investigation confirmed to The Associated Press.

Evidence was scheduled to be presented to jurors on Tuesday, but the hearings were postponed for about two weeks, the person said.

The person did not provide a reason for the postponement and spoke only on condition of anonymity because District Attorney Frank Sed-

ita and Hamburg police have not revealed any details of the case since announcing they had launched an investigation last month. Sedita did not respond to a request seeking comment.

Kane is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in her 20s at the player’s offseason home overlooking Lake Erie outside of Buffalo, a second person familiar with the investigation told AP, also on the condition of anonymity because police have not revealed the nature of their investigation.

Kane has not been charged.

The Buffalo News first reported the postponement earlier in the day.

love fried green tomatoes.

My grandmother made them at the beginning of fall when there were so many tomatoes on the vine that no one minded picking the unripe ones and cooking them before they turned red and juicy. And later, when I lived in New Orleans, I discovered that fried green tomatoes were available all year at local restaurants. Many places served the fried tomatoes as a side or an appetizer.

I was in heaven.

But the first time I ever had the combination of fried green tomatoes and rémoulade was at the long-shuttered, lunch-only institution Uglesichs. Uglesichs was known for its seafood, and, that day, it was a special. Fried green tomatoes and crab rémou-

lade. Two of my favorite things on a plate together. How could it not be great? Hot-out-of-the-pan fried green tomatoes and cold lump crab meat with rémoulade sauce.

It was more than memorable; it became an obsession. I couldn’t stop thinking about the dish. I went back several more times, but they never had that special again.

So I took that flavor experience and decided to adapt it for myself – which, of course, means I adapted it for the grill – and I was thrilled with the results.

Let’s start with the tomatoes.

When I make these mock “fried” tomatoes, I slather the tops and bottoms in a mixture of mayo and Dijon mustard, then dredge them in fine white cornmeal. I grill them so that the texture is reminiscent of fried – a little gritty. That’s just how they should be. Be sure to cut the tomatoes

in thick (a generous ½-inch) slablike slices so they hold up to the weight of the batter and the heat of the grill.

I prefer shrimp to crab with the green tomatoes, but feel free to make this with lump crab if you prefer. The shrimp must be made at least 2 hours in advance in order to let the bold flavors develop. That also makes this a great dish for a party, when you want all the prep work to be done before your company arrives.

I like to grill shell-on shrimp, as I think they have better flavor and the shell protects the delicate shrimp. But if you don’t like to peel shrimp, feel free to use shrimp without shells – just remember that the peeled shrimp will take less time to cook.

Once everything is prepped, all you have to do before serving is grill the green tomatoes and plate your dish. Easy.

2 tablespoons Creole or other whole-grain mustard 2 tablespoons ketchup 3 tablespoons finely chopped scallions 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh parsley 2 cloves garlic, grated 1 rib celery, finely chopped 1 teaspoon sweet paprika 1 teaspoon hot sauce Kosher salt and ground black pepper For the shrimp: 1½ pounds jumbo shrimp, unpeeled Olive oil Kosher salt and ground black pepper

For the tomatoes:

½ cup mayonnaise ½ cup Dijon mustard ½ cup of fine-grain cornmeal 2 large green tomatoes, cut into 1½-inch slices (8 slices total) To prepare the sauce, in a medium bowl mix together the mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, scallions, parsley, garlic, celery, paprika and hot sauce. Season with salt and pepper. Refrigerate the sauce until ready to use, or up to 1 day in advance.

To prepare the shrimp, heat the grill to medium.

Use paper towels to pat them dry. In a medium bowl, toss the shrimp with a splash of olive oil, then season with salt and pepper. Place the shrimp directly on the cooking grate and grill for 2 to 3 minutes, or until they curl and begin to turn pink. Turn over and grill on the other side for another 1 to 2 minutes. Transfer to a bowl and let cool for 5 minutes. Peel the shrimp and add to the bowl of rémoulade sauce. Toss well, then cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours and up to overnight.

Prepare the tomatoes just when ready to serve. Heat the grill to medium.

In a small bowl, mix together the mayonnaise and mustard. Place the cornmeal in a second bowl.

One at a time, spread the mayonnaise mixture over both sides of each tomato slice, then dredge the slices through the cornmeal to coat evenly. Remove any excess coating by lightly shaking the slices. The sides where the tomato skin is should be dry. Making sure your cooking grates are very clean, place tomatoes on the grates and grill 3 to 4 minutes per side, using tongs to flip, or until the tomatoes are marked, warm and tender.

While the tomatoes are still warm, divide the slices among 4 serving plates. Top each serving with the chilled rémoulade shrimp and serve immediately.

Nutrition information per serving (based on 4 servings): 830 calories; 600 calories from fat (72 percent of total calories); 67 g fat (11 g saturated; 0 g trans fats); 250 mg cholesterol; 2130 mg sodium; 29 g carbohydrate; 3 g fiber; 9 g sugar; 27 g protein.

Dear Reader: Erectile dysfunction (ED) – trouble attaining and sustaining an erection – is quite common in men over age 40. Why, you might ask, would nature (evolution) not preserve something so important to the continued existence of the human race? The average life expectancy throughout most of human history has been less than 50 years. Guys, we were not built to last!

To understand how vascular (blood vessel) disease can cause ED, you need to understand how an erection occurs.

During an erection, arteries supplying blood to the penis relax and widen. As the arteries relax, blood floods the penis through two central arteries. These arteries run through two flexible cylinders that run the length of the penis.

Thousands of tiny spaces inside these cylinders fill with blood.

At the same time, veins carrying blood away from the penis clamp down. As a result, more blood remains inside the penis. With more blood coming in and less going out, the penis swells and becomes firm. (I’ve put an illustration of this process on my website, AskDoctorK. com.)

Erections depend on the blood vessels that serve the penis. So it’s not surprising that vascular disease, which affects blood vessels, is the leading cause of ED. The most common type of vascular disease is atherosclerosis, which occurs when fatty deposits build up on artery walls. This narrows and clogs artery walls and limits blood flow through them.
