NEW LENOX – Village officials in New Lenox are considering the construction of new apartments near U.S. Route 30 and Prairie Street.

The planned location for the roughly 16-acre site is north and east of the New Lenox Fire Protection District Station No. 1. Four buildings were proposed for the site, which would contain 312 units.

At Monday’s board meeting, some board members had questions about parking, density issues and future development surrounding the proposed apartments.

Before the board members Monday was an agreement with the village and the developer, New Lenox Development Company LLC. Board members also are considering a special-use permit for planned unit development for the apartments.

Board Trustee David Smith said he was concerned about

the level of density the apartments would create in the area.

He said he wanted to make sure people are able to enter and exit the area without traffic congestion.

He also wanted to make sure the development of the apartments wouldn’t conflict with other projects in the area. Village officials are planning to redevelop its downtown area along Route 30 by bringing in a new developer and more businesses.

“I don’t want to get this one approved but then all of sudden something comes in and they want to do this, this and this,” Smith said.

Robin Ellis, the village’s community development director, said based on the feedback from board members, one idea was applying a transportation fee to the project that would help fund the relocation of the Metra train station.

New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann said he knows many people have questions and con-

cerns about multi-family developments. He said he wanted to make sure board members were focused on the “big picture.”

“We’re all talking about redevelopment in this community. We are growing like nobody’s business,” he said.

Village Board members are slated to vote on the development agreement and special-use permit at their next meeting.

Also at Monday’s meeting, board members passed in a 4-3 vote to allow video gaming at licensed truck stop establishments. While New Lenox has no truck stops, village officials said this proposal would ensure owners of those locations would be allowed to have video gaming if needed.

The village currently has video gaming at two licensed veterans establishments.

Smith, along with board Trustees Keith Madsen and Ray Tuminello voted against the proposal.

Plainfield works on improving streets

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Residents on and near Meadow Lane concerned about speeding motorists may be seeing traffic calming measures in the near future as the village works on a streets improvement plan.

Village officials said those residents can expect a survey on the traffic calming suggestions soon.

Meadow Lane was targeted by village officials and local consultant Teska Associates as a cornerstone example of the village’s Complete Street plan during a Village Board Committee of the Whole Meeting Monday.

“One of the big keys is to encourage traffic calming in areas where there are long and wide streets without a whole lot of traffic measures,” Director of Public Works Allen Persons said.

Teska Vice President Mike Hoffman said the plan includes pedestrian, bicycle and road traffic calming improvements.

The improvements include

curb extensions to shorten crosswalk lengths and road width, traffic circles to slow traffic at dangerous intersections, different colored crosswalk striping to improve pedestrian safety and chicanes, or roadside extensions, to reduce road width and discourage speeding.

The plan also calls for improvements along Main Street, Route 59 and intersections near the Downtown Historic District.

“Plainfield has already been doing a lot of elements of a complete street policy just by common practice,” Hoffman said, noting Van Dyke Road and other areas that fit into the Complete Street plan.

A big part of the plan is slowing down traffic on Meadow Lane from 127th Street south to Indian Boundary Road. It passes through the subdivisions of Whispering Creek, Liberty Grove, Dayfield, Prairie Knoll, Walker’s Grove and Tuttle Estates.

The plan calls for chicanes to narrow the road intermittently between driveways along the length of the road.

It suggests improving intersections at Pastoral Drive, Sunderlin Road, Blakely Drive and Sandbank Drive. But before any work will be done, the village will be sending nearby residents a survey on what types of traffic calming measures they’d like to see.

Several village officials said the Meadow Lane naturally developed into a speedway for motorists as Plainfield grew.

“Meadow Lane and Indian Boundary developed when the village was 4,000 people. Now it’s tens of thousands of people,” Trustee Jim Racich said, adding that non-residents may be speeding more than residents.

Mayor Mike Collins said Meadow Lane was constructed in a time when traffic volume was a fraction of what it is today.

“In my mind, I think when [previous village officials] developed that street, it shouldn’t have been so straight,” Mayor Mike Collins said, using Van Dyke Road as an example of how curving streets decrease motorists’ speed.

CLARIFICATION In the article, “JJC capital projects will be discussed at presentations” that was on page 2 of the Monday, Sept. 8, 2014, edition of The Herald-News, a reference was made to a $37 million cost estimate for the multipurpose building. The estimate came from a previous Herald-News report from a board meeting in August 2013 when trustees discussed the cost of the project. A spokeswoman for Joliet Junior College said Monday that the college has not determined a cost estimate for the multipurpose building. Trustees last year approved a $45 million bond issue to pay for both the multipurpose building and expansion on the Romeoville campus.

The spokeswoman said the cost of each project will depend on future decisions on how those projects should be built.

bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – A 21-gun salute, multiple color guards, two buglers and a host of veterans honored 64 of their fallen comrades in a special ceremony Monday at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood.

All 64 veterans were “direct burials” at the cemetery, meaning no one requested military honors for their interment, Jack Picciolo, commander of Lockport VFW Post 5788 said.

Their remains were dropped off at the cemetery by funeral homes or delivery services. Some had no next of kin or no family nearby to attend their funerals, Picciolo said. Others were homeless.

All were buried during the previous quarter of this year.

Monday’s direct burial ceremony was attended by more than 60 veterans and volunteers. That’s a far cry from a few years ago, when few people turned out to witness the ceremony, Picciolo said.

“Two or three years ago, I can remember when there were only two people that turned out for the whole thing, myself and the [cemetery’s] director,” Picciolo said. “We read the names of 87 veterans and no else was

people. You hear all the time that ‘freedom isn’t free.’ It’s paid for with blood and sweat, not only by the veterans but by their families.”

Monday’s ceremony was attended by members of the American Legion Riders, as well as members of various area Legion and VFW posts.

Following a benediction and the Pledge of Allegiance, Admonis read the names,

ranks and military branches of all 64 veterans, who ranged from World War II onward. A memorial bell was rung after each name was read.

A seven-man rifle squad then fired three volleys, after which a pair of buglers played “Echo Taps.” Memorial squad members removed a flag draping a representative casket, folded it and presented it to Norm Surprenant of Shorewood.

“They asked me to sit in for the families,” Surprenant, an 89-year-old Army Air Force veteran said.

The cemetery has offered direct burials since 2004.

“Every quarter year we take the time to honor those who were laid to rest without honors,” Admonis said.

Admonis noted the cemetery’s all-volunteer memorial honor squad is one of only three active units in the country.

The cemetery was dedicated in 1999. More than 36,000 veterans have been buried on the 982-acre site. The cemetery eventually will hold 400,000 graves.

No break when it comes to charity Donations fall off during summer

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Poverty doesn’t take a vacation for Kathleen Langdon.

And neither should donations or volunteers, said Langdon, Catholic Charities development and communications director. She said the summer is always sluggish when it comes to donations for the nonprofit agency that serves Grundy, Will and DuPage counties, along with several others.

The same is true for other area nonprofit agencies. Many work to keep charitable giving and volunteering up during the summer. They hold more events, spreading awareness through social media and partnering with other organizations.

During August, Catholic Charities reminds people of the work the agency does and the need for donations, Langdon said.

“Donations are not as hefty as they are during Thanksgiving and Christmas months,” she said.

Donations tend to drop off in the summer because people

are vacationing and because the holiday season is traditionally a time for people to reflect on those who are needy, she said.

While donations decline in the summer, the agency does not suffer a lull in volunteers, said Stephanie Ambrose, volunteer coordinator. Four hundred to 600 volunteers per month assist with the Daybreak Center and Shepherd’s Table, she said.

The Joliet-based Warren-Sharpe Community Center does well with its food pantry during the summer, said Kay Bolden, executive director. The youth and family agency maintains good partnerships with local food banks and companies such as WalMart to provide food.

But ensuring that Warren-Sharpe has enough volunteers during the summer is tough, Bolden said. During the summer, children served by the center need more help because they’re not in school and need things to do.

The center tries to maintain volunteer levels by working with local churches and inviting university students to help, she said.

Michael Hennessy, United Way of Will County president and CEO, said many nonprofit agencies have a lot of client activity and recreational pro-

grams in the summer. Nonprofit agencies begin their campaigns in late summer to gather donations and coordinate volunteers for the holidays.

The late summer also is the back-to-school season, when families need help gathering school supplies for their chil-

dren. Hennessy said some agencies try to fulfill those needs during that time.

“If people are in a position to remember individuals who are struggling throughout the year and they are in the position to help outside of the holiday season, we would be great,” Hennessy said.

Crew of 65 cleans up Plainfield Academy after mold discovery

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield Academy opened Monday after it closed Friday for the second time in a week.

“This was all done as a precaution,” said Tom Hernandez, director of communications for Plainfield School District 202, adding that the school was professionally inspected and cleaned over the weekend.

“The levels of mold were not high. These were additional steps our environmental

consultant did not even recommend,” Hernandez said.

The district sent out a news release Thursday afternoon stating that the school at 23920 Lockport St. would be closed Friday because a small amount of mold was found behind a poster hanging on a wall.

The school also was closed Wednesday because an unknown green, powdery dust was discovered by teachers on bulletin boards in several classrooms.

The school was cleaned and sterilized Wednesday.

But Hernandez said the area behind the poster was never checked during that process.

On Sunday, another news release by the district stated that the school had been thoroughly cleaned over the week-

end, but this time by professionals.

Every classroom, office and common space, including the gym, was cleaned by a local 65-person crew from Servpro, a Tennessee-based fire, water and mold remediation service.

“The crew did five days of work in two-and-a-half days with rotating shifts,” Hernandez said.

In addition to the crew, industrial high-efficiency particulate air filters were used to clean the air.

Hernandez said special industrial dehumidifiers also

were brought into every classroom to counteract the high humidity brought in by the building’s ventilation system, which draws air from outside.

There aren’t any other buildings with mold problems in the school district, he said.

Hernandez couldn’t say for certain if the two missed days of school will be made up, explaining that the district is figuring out how the days fit into the state’s formula for total school hours.

“The safety of our students and our staff is our top priority,” he said.

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A judge will allow a slain woman’s best friend to testify about an alleged incident of abuse by her accused killer.

Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes decided Monday that Shelease Adams can talk about what Velma Franklin said to her during a conversation in 1998 after she noticed a gash on Franklin’s head.

Franklin reportedly told Adams she’d been pushed into a door by her boyfriend Eric Glover Sr., 42. Franklin was shot to death on June 17, 2002, in the Third Avenue home she shared with Glover and her four children.

Glover Sr. was suspected immediately in the slaying, but the case was never prosecuted. A cold case review by the state’s attorney’s office renewed murder charges against him in 2012 while he was imprisoned on other weapons charges.

No trial date has been set for Glover Sr., who is the bio-

logical father of Eric Glover Jr., who was strangled to death in January 2013 in a house on North HickoEric Glover ry Street. The Sr. younger Glover’s mother and stepfather have said Glover Sr. was not involved in his son’s life.

On Monday, Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Jessica Colon-Sayre and Assistant Public Defender Litricia Payne argued over the admissibility of information Adams relayed during a hearing last month.

Payne said Adams may have become confused whether there was one or two injuries involving incidents with doors and has offered conflicting information in different interviews during the last 12 years.

“It appears to me she’s talking about the same incident [but] merging different dates,” Payne said.

LOCAL BRIEFS Testimony begins Tuesday in Romeoville murder trial JOLIET – Testimony is set to start Tuesday in the trial of a 24-year-old man accused of fatally ambushing his 15-yearold ex-girlfriend in Romeoville in February.

Seven women and five men were selected Monday as jurors for the murder trial of Erick M. Maya, according Erick M. Maya to courthouse personnel. There are four alternate jurors.

Briana Valle and her mother, Alicia Guerrero, were leaving their residence in the 300 block of Emery Avenue when Maya allegedly came up and opened fire into their car.

Briana, a Romeoville High School student who previously dated Maya, was shot in the head and died four days later. Guerrero was shot in the neck, but survived.

The Valle family had an order of protection against Maya after he allegedly threatened to rape and kill the teenage girl.

Edwards murder trial delayed JOLIET – The trial of man accused of slaying the co-owner of a boxing gym in August 2012 has been delayed.

Kenneth G. Edwards, 46, is accused of killing Sean D. McGinn, 39, outside the KO Zone Boxing Club, 218 E. Cass St. in August 2012, as part of a robbery arranged by McGinn’s business partner, Jermain K. Bennett.

Edwards was scheduled to face trial for murder starting Wednesday. But Judge Edward Burmila granted a request by appellate prosecutor Dave Neal to delay the trial until next month and order a witness who now lives out of state to testify. Also, Edwards’ bond was reduced from $5 million to $1 million.

• Michael B. Morris, 34, of Starke, Florida, and Angel L. Coakley, 30, of Keystone Heights, Florida, were arrested by Joliet police Wednesday on charges of delivery of drugs and drug possession. Coakley was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

• Deshawn P. Flowers, 26, of the 3800 block of Patricia Lane in Richton Park, was arrested by Steger police Wednesday on charges of driving with a suspended license and driving without insurance.

• Malcolm T. Johnson, 28, of the 400 block of North Hickory Street in Joliet, was arrested by sheriff’s police Thursday on charges of aggravated domestic battery, domestic battery and vandalism.

• John J. McCarthy, 43, of the 16800 block of 81st Avenue in Tinley Park, was arrested by Bolingbrook police Thursday on charges of theft, identity theft and fraud.

• Brian J. Mepham, 34, of the 100 block of Joyce Drive in Manteno, was arrested by Peotone police Thursday on charges of drug possession, driving without a license and driving without insurance.

• Jose M. Matavillegas, 31, of the 200 block of Riley Avenue in Lockport, was arrested by Lockport police Friday on charges of drug possession and driving with a suspended license.

• Archaye D. Raine, 26, of the 200 block of Lincoln Street in Joliet, was arrested by Joliet police Friday on a charge of vandalism.

• Juan J. Tinoco, 25, of the 300 block of Mills Road in Joliet, was arrested by sheriff’s police Friday on charges of drug possession and unlawful use of a weapon.

• William I. Tolliver, 33, of the 4800 block of West Jackson Boulevard in Chicago, was arrested by sheriff’s police Friday on a charge of delivery of drugs.

JOLIET TOWNSHIP – A SWAT team was called out Sunday after a man allegedly threatened two people with a machete inside his house.

Will County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said a 56-year-old man and 42-year-old woman spent the day watching sports and partying with Parnell L. Samuels, 51, at his house in the 100 block of Anderson Avenue.

As the night went on, Samuels allegedly began acting erratically and making threatening statements, so the other man decided about 10 p.m. that he and the woman would leave, Hoffmeyer said.

“When he went into a bed-

room to tell her they should go, Samuels took a machete with a two- to three-foot blade and swung it at his head,” Hoffmeyer said. “The man was able to duck and fled from the residence to call 911.”

After Samuels allegedly refused to come out, the Special Operations Group was called to the scene and deputies blocked off nearby streets.

About 1 a.m., officers forced their way inside to take Samuels and the woman out, Hoffmeyer said.

No one was injured.

Samuels was arrested on charges of aggravated assault and unlawful use of a weapon.

Hoffmeyer said the woman who was inside does not want to pursue charges and told deputies she did not feel she

was in danger at any time.

Previous arrest On July 17, Samuels allegedly attacked a 26-year-old woman who told police she’d come over to his residence to buy drugs from him.

Samuels allegedly ripped off the woman’s clothes and raped her before she was able to injure his groin, according to police reports.

Samuels was arrested on criminal sexual assault and battery charges after going to the same hospital as his alleged victim. Hoffmeyer said Monday that incident remains under investigation.

He also has been arrested twice on domestic battery charges in the past two years, according to jail records.

MONEE TOWNSHIP – Two people were hospitalized Sunday after their glider clipped power lines.

The crash occurred about 5:15 p.m. in a field near the 27600 block of Egyptian Trail, according to Will County sheriff’s police. A 55-year-old Frankfort man and 39-year-old Lake Zurich woman were operating an ultra light powered parachute – a cart with a large fan

at the back that is suspended beneath a parachute.

Both victims were taken to St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields where the woman was listed in stable condition, according to reports. The man suffered a “severe neck laceration” and was later airlifted to Advocate Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn. His condition was not available Monday.

The National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the crash, according to sheriff’s police.

Casino admissions and revenue down statewide Hollywood Casino bucks trend with slight revenue increase

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Hollywood Casino in Joliet was the only Illinois casino to see an increase in revenue last month, raking in about $11.5 million, but admissions continue to decline.

Hollywood experienced a 5 percent increase in revenue compared to August 2013, while admissions were down about 7.4 percent, according to the latest figures from the Illinois Gaming Board.

Still, River’s Casino in Des Plaines, the state’s newest casino, remains the biggest money-maker of all 10

casinos in the state, bringing in about $35.6 million in revenue – more than triple that of Hollywood.

Revenue at River’s Casino also was nearly double that of its closest competitor, Harrah’s Joliet, which brought in about $17.9 million.

Both River’s and Harrah’s in Joliet experienced slight declines in revenue and admissions compared to August 2013.

Overall, revenue at the state’s 10 casinos were down 5.5 percent last month compared to August 2013.

Statewide, video gaming terminals brought in a total net income of $55.6 million in July – representing a 117 percent increase from July 2013, according to the latest figures available from the Illinois Gaming Board.

Much of the growth is the result of more gaming terminals coming online as video gaming expands into more establishments statewide. In July, nearly 18,000 terminals were online statewide, compared to 8,808 terminals a year ago.

Video gaming figures for August were not released as of Monday afternoon.

LOCKPORT – Police are looking for two men who robbed a cellphone store at gunpoint Friday night.

One man showed a pistol as the robbers demanded cellphones and tablet computers at the store in the 16600 block of West 159th Street, police said.

“They ended up walking away with numerous cellphones and tablets,” Lockport

Deputy Chief Dave Draksler said Monday. “We don’t have a full inventory yet.”

The robbery happened at 7:45 p.m. The men got away in a light blue sedan, believed to be a model from about the year 2000.

Both men were black, thin and wearing beige, hooded sweatshirts, police said. The robber with the pistol was described as about 5 feet, 8 inches tall. The other one was about 5 feet, 6 inches tall.

LOCAL BRIEF Stove fire damages Senior Suites apartment JOLIET – Fire damaged some units at a downtown senior complex Sunday afternoon.

Battalion Chief Mike Stromberg said food caught fire on a stove top about 4:30 p.m. inside a fourth-floor unit of Senior Suites of Joliet, the former YMCA building at 215 N. Ottawa St.

“The fire caught the cabinets above the stove on fire, which activated two sprinklers that extinguished it,” Stromberg said.

No one was injured.

Two apartments on the floors below suffered water damage.

The Red Cross arranged for temporary housing for one resident, Stromberg said.

He was involved at St. Lawrence School and was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church.

Bill most enjoyed spending time with his family, boating, fishing, football and his model train room.

He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Bill had a generous, kind spirit and will be dearly missed by all that knew and loved him.

Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy dies at 93

By BERNARD McGHEE The Associated Press ATLANTA – Chick-fil-A founder and billionaire S. Truett Cathy rose from poverty, building a privately held restaurant chain that famously closes every Sunday but drew unwanted attention for the Cathy family’s opposition to gay marriage.

Cathy died early Monday at 93.

He opened his first postwar diner in an Atlanta suburb in 1946 and by 1967 he had founded and opened his first Chickfil-A Inc. restaurant in Atlanta. Over ensuing decades, the chain’s boneless chicken sandwich he is credited with inventing would propel Chickfil-A expansion to more than 1,800 outlets in 39 states and the nation’s capital. By early 2013, the company says on its website, annual sales topped $5 billion as the chain offered up a taste of the South that went beyond chicken to such offerings as sweet tea, biscuits and gravy.

Cathy’s son, Dan, currently chairman and president of the chain, told the Baptist Press in 2012 that the company was “guilty as charged” for backing “the biblical definition of a family.” Gay rights groups and others called for boycotts and kiss-ins at Cathy’s restaurants. The Jim Henson Co. pulled its Muppet toys from kids’ meals, while politicians in Boston and Chicago told the chain it is not welcome there.

The controversy later subsided.

The family-owned company has said it has had 46 consecutive years of positive sales growth. Cathy’s $6 billion fortune put him on the yearly Forbes magazine list of the wealthiest Americans in the country. The company listed him on its website as its chairman emeritus after he left day-to-day operations to younger generations.

Truett Cathy began his career in the restaurant business in 1946 by opening with his brother an Atlanta diner called The Dwarf Grill, named for the short and stout shape of the restaurant.

LITTLETON, Colo. – Noel Hinners, a former chief scientist for NASA who helped plan the scientific exploration of the moon for the Apollo program and later oversaw projects such as the Mars Surveyor Program, has died.

Hinners’ brother Bill Hinners said Saturday that Hinners died Friday after battling a brain tumor. He was 78.

Hinners began his meteoric space career in 1963 by helping plan the lunar exploration, and he was just 33 when Apollo 11 landed on the moon. He worked on the Apollo program until 1972, when

he became the space agency’s director of lunar programs.

Hinners later served as the director of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington and the director of the Goddard Space Flight Center.

He retired from NASA as its third-ranking executive in 1989.

At Lockheed Martin Corp., Hinners was a vice president of flight systems whose responsibilities included NASA’s Mars Surveyor Program and Stardust, the first program dedicated to exploring a comet.

“He was invaluable to the U.S.,” Bill Hinners said, adding that among his brother’s contributions were his efforts to recruit high school students

into careers in science. “His spunk and personality and willpower to go on is what made him work so well with people.”

Keith Cowing, who runs the blog NASA Watch, said Hinners was a reader of his website and would post comments. He called him “one of the last of a certain breed” of NASA scientists from the early days of space exploration programs.

“He had one foot firmly placed in the old NASA and one in the new NASA,” Cowing said.

Hinners worked a variety of positions at NASA, Cowing said. “He did everything you could do in and around NASA once,” Cowing said.

Serious respiratory illness hits hundreds of kids

CHICAGO – Hundreds of children in more than 10 states have been sickened by a severe respiratory illness that public health officials say may be caused by an uncommon virus similar to the germ that causes the common cold.

Nearly 500 children have been treated at one hospital alone – Children’s Mercy in Kansas City, Missouri – and some required intensive care, according to authorities.

The suspected germ, enterovirus 68, is an uncommon strain of a very common family of viruses that typically hit from summertime through autumn.

The virus can cause mild coldlike symptoms including runny noses, coughing and wheezing but Mark Pallansch, director of the viral diseases division at the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said this summer’s cases are unusually severe and include serious breathing problems.

“It’s not highly unusual but we’re trying to understand what happened this year in terms of these noticeable and much larger clusters of severe respiratory disease,” Pallansch said Monday.

The virus typically causes illness lasting about a week and most children recover with no lasting problems.

Cases have been confirmed in Missouri and Illinois. CDC said it is testing to see if the virus caused respiratory illnesses reported in children in Alabama, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, Oklahoma and Utah. The states’ tally changes as specimens are confirmed or test negative. A spokeswoman for Iowa’s public health department said CDC

The CDC’s Dr. Anne Schuchat said at a Monday news briefing that there are other viruses making kids sick.

“Most of the runny noses out there are not going to be turning into this,” she said.

Children with asthma and other health problems are especially at risk for the enterovirus, but reported cases include children without asthma who have developed asthmalike breathing problems, Pallansch said. He said no deaths have been reported in the outbreak.

Madigan proposes allowing cameras at nursing homes

CHICAGO – Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan on Monday said she will push for legislation to allow video or audio recording devices to be placed in nursing home rooms to monitor patient treatment, calling it the “next line of defense” for the state’s elderly residents.

The legislation, which Democratic state Sen. Terry Link of Waukegan said he’ll sponsor, would require both resident

and roommate consent for the monitoring devices to be installed. Residents or their families would be responsible for the devices purchase, installation and maintenance of cameras, and facilities would be prohibited from retaliating against those who used the devices.

“I’m not advocating for turning anyone’s private life into a reality show,” said Madigan, a Chicago Democrat, adding the plan would “give us peace of mind in circumstances where we can’t physically go to the nursing home.”

Madigan said her office fielded a host of complaints in recent months from nursing home residents and families concerned about safety and security.

Pat Comstock, executive director of The Health Care Council of Illinois, a nursing home lobbying group, said in a statement that she was “looking forward to working with our elected officials in reviewing data on this issue and making sure our residents are protected.” While Comstock noted that “the safety of all our residents is of the highest priority,” she also said that “trivacy remains a serious concern.”

Illinois would become the sixth state to allow electronic monitoring in nursing home patient rooms if the proposal becomes law. Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Maryland and Washington state all have similar laws on the books.

Ill. begins taking marijuana business applications

SPRINGFIELD – Entrepreneurs wanting to cultivate or dispense medical marijuana under a new Illinois law are getting their chance to be considered.

The state on Monday began accepting applications from aspiring cultivation centers and dispensaries vying for one of a limited number of permits.

A state law enacted last year authorized a four-year pilot project that will expire in 2017, but so far, not a single marijuana seed

has been planted. State officials have said the first products may be sold next year.

The state’s Department of Public Health last week said more than 2,000 people registered for Illinois medical marijuana identification cards in the first three days of applications. Officials had expected just a few hundred applications.

Illinois mother charged with murder of daughter

WAUKEGAN – A suburban Chicago woman was charged with first-degree murder in the death of her 11-year-old daughter.

Nicholette Lawrence, 32, was held on $5 million bond following the death of Raasania Coley on Friday, police said. Police said Lawrence told investigators she struck her daughter in the stomach earlier that week.

The girl was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead. An autopsy by the Lake County coroner’s office ruled she died from a torn stomach as a result of blunt force trauma.

Lawrence’s two other children have been placed with relatives.

Police said there were no other allegations of abuse.

Online jail records didn’t indicate an attorney for Lawrence.

Police: Chicago man sets wife on fire during fight

CHICAGO – A Chicago woman was in critical condition after her husband set her on fire, police said.

The 66-year-old man used rubbing alcohol to set his wife on fire during an argument around 9 p.m. Sunday in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood, police spokeswoman Amina Greer told the Chicago SunTimes. She said the 60-year-old woman was taken to an area hospital.

The man was in custody but no charges had been filed, Greer said. The couple’s names were not released.

Home Depot confirms breach in stores NEW YORK – Home Depot confirmed on Monday that its payment systems have been hacked in a data breach that could affect millions of shoppers

who used credit and debit cards at its more than 2,000 U.S. and Canadian stores.

The breach could turn out to be one of the biggest in history.

Home Depot did not say how many cards might be affected, but the largest U.S. home improvement chain did say its investigation into the breach goes as far back as April.

The news comes nearly a week after a website that focuses on cybersecurity reported on Tuesday a possible hack of Home Depot’s data. The company said later that day that it was investigating the potential breach.

Global warming may mean bye-bye for some birdies

By SETH BORENSTEIN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – As the world gets warmer, the Baltimore oriole will no longer be found in Maryland. The Mississippi kite will move north, east and pretty much out of its namesake state.

And the California gull will mostly be a summer stranger to the Golden State.

Those are among the conclusions in a new National Audubon Society report that looks at the potential effects of global warming on birds by the year 2080.

“This will spell trouble for most birds,” said Gary Langham, the society’s chief scientist and vice president.

Over the next six decades or so, the critical ranges of more than half the 588 North American bird species will either shrink significantly or move into uncharted territory for the animal, according to Langham’s analysis.

While other studies have made similar pronouncements, this report gives the most comprehensive projections of what is likely to happen to America’s birds.

The report said that in a few decades, 126 bird species will end up with a much smaller area to live in, which the society says will make them endangered. An additional 188 species will lose more than half their natural range but relocate to new areas. Those moves will be threatening to the birds’ survival, too, because they will be confronted with different food and soil, bird experts said.

Other birds, including backyard regulars like the American robin and the blue jay, will fly in even more places, the report says. And some of the biggest potential winners aren’t exactly birds that people like – species such as the turkey vulture, the American crow and the mourning

“If you want to know what the climate change future sounds like, it sounds a lot like a mourning dove,” Langham said. Some people find annoying the singing of the mourning dove, which will more than double its range.

Langham used bird survey data in summer and winter from 2000 to 2009 and correlated it to climate conditions to come up with simulations of how bird ranges will change. He then tested the simulations against past data from 1980 to 1999, and they worked. Then he used United Nations carbon pollution scenarios from 2007 to project bird ranges in 2020, 2040 and 2080.

The report is not yet peer-reviewed, which is crucial in science. It has been sent to a scientific journal but has not yet been accepted. However, Langham said it is based on a report Audubon did last year that was commissioned by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

gist Stuart Pimm dismissed the study as too general, poorly executed and outdates. But other scientists, such as Stanford University biologist Terry Root, said the Audubon report makes sense and looks trustworthy. A third biologist, A. Townsend Peterson of the University of Kansas, faulted some of the methods used but praised the overall comprehensiveness of the study.

“It’s very scary,” Root said. “People need to stand up and take note.”

On Tuesday, several federal agencies, Cornell University and a number of private organizations will release a separate U.S. “state of the birds” report, and the outlook will be bleak.

Cornell Lab of Ornithology director John Fitzpatrick wrote in a preview last month in The New York Times that 230 species “are currently in danger of extinction or at risk of becoming so” and that two dozen common birds, such as nighthawks, are showing “early warning signals of distress.”

Congress back in session for mutual inaction House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, told Republicans they would make a “closing argument” to midterm election voters in the session of Congress that began Monday.

It’s shaping up to be a lousy one. And the Democrat-controlled Senate is not likely to do much better.

Operating on the notion that the public prefers political theater to authentic accomplishments, the House and Senate are preparing to achieve almost nothing when they reconvene.

Instead of passing bills into law and allowing voters to judge their work, the legislators appear to be pushing hopes of any serious lawmaking off into the safety of a post-election, lame-duck session – and that’s if they move relatively quickly.

In a memorandum sent to House Republicans on Thursday, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California promised a “busy September.” The GOP, he wrote, will bundle together and pass again a series of bills the House approved earlier but that never made headway in the Senate. Repackaging and restamping defunct bills doesn’t sound like much work to us.

And Republicans don’t have to worry about the Senate sending any of the bundles back for final consultations before they go to the president’s desk. They contain so many proposals that are unwise and toxic to Democrats – such as blocking environmental regulations – that the Senate will dismiss them for what they are: measures meant to make Republicans appear as though they are advancing a conservative agenda when, in fact, they are advancing nothing at all.

Senate Democrats aren’t going to be above such maneuvering. The Washington Post’s Ed O’Keefe reported Senate leaders might hold votes on bills calculated to appeal to women and working-class voters – if not to pass Congress. The Senate, for example, could vote on raising the federal minimum wage or on an expensive student loan refinancing scheme, neither of which have a chance in the GOP House.

It’s too easy to dismiss the dueling bill-passing as the natural results of deep party disagreement. There are many areas of prime national concern on which the parties have the capacity to agree now. These include reforming National Security Agency spying, adjusting the patent system, repairing the Voting Rights Act, shoring up the U.S. Postal Service and adding protections to private data saved online in cloud storage and email services such as Gmail.

Teachers’ endorsement is odd but makes sense The Illinois Education Association has always leaned more Republican than its Illinois Federation of Teachers counterpart, but at least one of the IEA’s endorsements raised a few eyebrows this year.

Conservative state Rep. Dwight Kay, R-Glen Carbon, was endorsed by the IEA last month. The Illinois AFL-CIO assigns the Metro East legislator a rating of only 36 percent so far this session. The Illinois Federation of Teachers, which is affiliated with the AFL-CIO, endorsed Kay’s Democratic opponent, Cullen L. Cullen.

The IEA is not an AFL-CIO union.

VIEWS Rich Miller The Kay endorsement is not what you’d call an everyday occurrence. Yes, the IEA endorses a fair amount of Republicans, but it’s pretty well documented that Kay was on friendly terms with the tea party when he was first elected in 2010. The IEA is not exactly enamored with that bunch.

According to a story published by the fiscally hardright Illinois Policy Institute,

Kay attended one of its press conferences last year with a handful of other Republican legislators who “showed their support” for the group’s budget legislation, including a proposal to move all current teachers and government workers into 401(k)style pension plans.

Kay, however, did not co-sponsor that plan, and it never was brought to the House floor for a vote.

The IEA, of course, was and still is dead-set against the Illinois Policy Institute’s plan.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Madigan, of course, also has been known to try to “flip” a member whenever he deems it necessary. So, a candidate beholden to Madigan might not always be considered trustworthy.

Kay, on the other hand, never could be confused with being a Madigan ally and has an independent streak when it comes to his own party.

And there are those under the statehouse dome who figure that Madigan, despite his anti-Rauner campaign rhetoric these days, eventually might decide to work with the Republican against the teachers unions as he did a few years ago. So why give Madigan another “duckling” such as Cullen when a Republican might very well turn out to be far more trustworthy?

In other words, the IEA’s endorsement of Kay makes perfect sense – at least as far as anything makes sense at the Illinois statehouse.

And according to a report in GOP Illinois USA, Kay and others “spoke very highly” of Rep. Jeanne Ives, who is perhaps unrivaled in the General Assembly for her harsh criticisms of government employee unions. Ives recently donated to Kay’s campaign.

And speaking of money, Chicago radio talk show host Dan Proft, who’s no friend of the teachers unions whatsoever, told me he and Kay have discussed whether Proft would contribute to Kay’s campaign. Proft has a huge campaign fund, so I suppose it’s possible that Kay might wind up receiving cash from both sides of the teachers union debate.

Kay and Cullen, I’m told, had identical answers to questions posed by the union. Kay voted against the state pension reform bill, which the teachers appreciated because they fought so hard against the bill’s passage. And, according to folks at the IEA, Kay clearly went out of his way to obtain

their endorsement this year.

So, after rejecting him three elections in a row, the union awarded it to the Republican.

But there are a couple of other important angles here.

The IEA is understandably worried about what could happen if Bruce Rauner is elected. Rauner has howled about the evils of teachers unions for years.

The IEA will need allies in both parties to fend off Rauner’s expected attacks on their collective bargaining rights and tenure.

A friendly voice in the House Republican caucus probably wouldn’t hurt when a Gov. Rauner is pushing those legislators to fall into lock step.

Also, I’m told, the IEA rank and file has quite a few members who really don’t care for House Speaker Michael Madigan, particularly downstate, but also in some parts of suburbia.

Madigan went after teachers’ pensions a few years after he took tons of campaign money from Rauner’s anti-union education reform pals. Madigan used that cash to stave off a Republican

By TIM TIERNEY Shaw Media Correspondent FRANKFORT – After playing in the Lincoln-Way Cup against the other three Lincoln-Way schools, Central’s Scott Mueller had an interesting explanation for his approach to the event.

“We don’t treat it like anything special despite the fact that it is, because then we might get hyped,’’ Mueller said. “On the first tee, my heart was pounding. The last time I played here, I didn’t play too well.’’

It was a different story Monday for Mueller at Prestwick Country Club.

He shot an event-best 38 on the front nine as Central scored 162 to edge East (165) for the Cup. North was third at 177, and West was fourth with 188.

“It means a lot, especially naming this event after former Knight golfer Tommy Schuman,’’ Central coach Dan Szablewski said. “The boys really rallied together and brought the trophy to his alma mater of Lincoln-Way Central.

“When the current seniors were freshmen, he (Schuman) was a golfer.

During baseball season, he passed away.’’

Although Mueller said his round was “nothing special – hitting greens in regulation’’ – he did single out No. 6, a 567-yard par-5 hole, as his best.

“I hit a 290 drive right down the middle of the fairway, then hit the hybrid around 215 right next to the hole,’’ Mueller said.

“I chipped up and two-putted but came about a centimeter away from a birdie.’’

“I made a lot of up-anddowns throughout the round. I could have done a little better, but overall

it was good.’’

East’s low scorer was Jake White with a 40 in the first foursome.

“I started out with a bogey and bounced back with a birdie on hole 4,’’ he said. “Hole 8, I doubled that, and finished with a par.

“It’s a fun thing because it’s all four of the Lincoln-Ways, always a little bit of a rivalry. It’s a fun event.’’

White described the par-4 fourth hole as his best.

“I hit it down the fairway, then hit it on the green and made the birdie putt,’’ he said.

Alex Maksymiak had 44 for North, and Sean Knights carded 44 to lead West.

East, the defending SouthWest Suburban Blue champ, has a dual-match win over Homewood-Flossmoor to its credit this year.

“It’s gone all right,’’ White said of the season so far. “We’re hoping to pick it up a little bit.’’

East will be in a strong field Saturday at the Providence Invitational.

“I’m looking forward to that,’’ White said.

By IAN HARRISON The Associated Press TORONTO – Jacob Turner got burned by Jose Bautista, putting the Cubs in a hole they couldn’t climb out of.

Marcus Stroman pitched a three-hitter for his first complete game in 18 career major league starts, and Bautista hit a three-run homer for the Toronto Blue Jays in an 8-0 win Monday night over the Cubs.

Bautista turned a 2-0 Blue Jays lead into a five-run edge with a two-out drive into the second deck in the fifth.

“That was really the difference,” Turner said. “If I can get through that inning and keep us where we were, it’s a totally different game.”

Turner (5-9) allowed five runs – four earned – and seven hits in six innings.

“Definitely didn’t have my

fastball command, but I felt like I battled,” Turner said.

That wasn’t enough for the Cubs, who couldn’t get anything going against the efficient Stroman.

“He’s got a really good arm,” Cubs manager Rick Renteria said of Stroman after his team was shut out for the 15th time this season, second in the NL behind San Diego’s 18.

Stroman (10-5) struck out eight and walked none, improving to 3-0 with a 1.19 ERA in his past three starts.

“It doesn’t get any better than that,” Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. “It was a dominating performance.”

BALTIMORE – Ray Rice was let go Monday by the Baltimore Ravens and suspended indefinitely by the NFL after a video was released showing the running back striking his then-fiancee in February.

by TMZ Sports, shows Rice and Janay Palmer in an elevator at an Atlantic City casino. Each hits the other before Rice knocks Palmer off her feet and into a railing. Months ago, a TMZ video showed Rice dragging Palmer – now his wife – from the elevator at the Revel casino, which closed Sept. 2.

Earlier Monday, the Ravens said they never saw the new video. Hours later, they sent out a one-sentence release: “The Baltimore Ravens

that Rice caused “bodily injury to Janay Palmer, specifically by striking her with his hand, rendering her unconscious.”

The Ravens had used words like “respect” and “proud” in referring to Rice after his arrest.

When the NFL announced Rice’s two-game suspension July 24 for domestic violence, general manager Ozzie Newsome said, “We respect the efforts Ray has made to become the best partner and father he can be. That night was not typical of the Ray Rice we know and respect. We believe that he will not let that one night define who he is, and he is determined to make sure something like this never happens again.”

Stafford improvised brilliantly Monday night on two early touchdown passes to Johnson, and Detroit beat the New York Giants, 35-14, in Caldwell’s first game as Lions coach.

Stafford also ran for a TD for Detroit, which intercepted Eli Manning twice in the Lions’ first Monday night opener since 1971. It was a bright start for Detroit, which collapsed down the stretch last year and missed the postseason. Jim Schwartz was fired and replaced by Caldwell.

Stafford went 22 of 32 for 346 yards. Johnson had seven catches for 164 yards.

Manning was 18 of 33 for 163 yards and a touchdown for the Giants, who started 0-6 last season and never led in their 2014 opener.

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – NASCAR driver Joey Gase will race at the Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet this weekend, driving his No. 52 in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and making his debut in the Sprint Cup Series as No. 32.

Gase, 21, has finished as high as 11th in his Nationwide career and is in the Top 20 NASCAR driver standings.

But his youth, dedication and rank aren’t all that set Gase apart. When Gase races, his cars feature images of everyday people – including his mother, Mary Jo – whose organs and tissues were donated after their deaths.

Gase was just a senior at his Iowa high school when his mother died suddenly of an undiagnosed aneurysm. She had suffered from migraines most of her life, but Gase said doctors told the family the headaches likely were not connected with her aneurysm. Other than that, she had no previous health problems.

“She was very healthy,” Gase said. “She ate right and worked out. ... She was perfectly fine the day she passed away. It was a big shock. No one expects something like that.”

On that day, Gase was 18, and his sister Ashley was 15. Their mother was single, and Gase found himself the legal head of the household and making immediate and important decisions.

Donating to help others One decision was whether to donate his mother’s organs, tissues and corneas.

He said his extended family helped make that decision.

“My mom always loved helping people,” Gase said.

“She’d have wanted other people to continue to live their lives.”

Weight gain from taking antidepressant is usually small Dear Doctor K: My doctor thinks I could benefit from an antidepressant. But I’ve heard that antidepressants cause weight gain and I’m already overweight. Do any antidepressants cause less weight gain than others?

Dear Reader: Many of my patients have asked me that question. Like you, they were hesitating to take antidepressants because of the possibility they would gain weight.

And they’re right: Many antidepressants do cause weight gain in some people. The question has been how much weight gain they cause. A new study may calm those concerns. This large and long-term study shows that weight gain is usually small and differs little from one antidepressant to another.

The study was led by researchers at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital. It included more than 19,000 people and lasted for one year.

The men and women in the study took an antidepressant for at least three months. The types of antidepressants they took varied. They included tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline (Elavil); selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) such as fluoxetine (Prozac) and citalopram (Celexa); and serotonin and

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs) such as duloxetine (Cymbalta) and venlafaxine (Effexor). The researchers checked each person’s weight every three months for a year.

People taking citalopram gained the most weight in the study – an average of one to two pounds. Weight gain linked to other antidepressants was even smaller. Tricyclic antidepressants caused the least weight gain, but these older drugs are no longer prescribed as frequently.

It’s also worth noting that not everyone taking an antidepressant gained weight. Some people actually lost a few pounds. Why is that? My guess is that some people eat more when they’re depressed – just as some people drink more. Some people “drown their sorrows” in food rather than drink. For such folks, lifting their depression with antidepressants leads them to eat less.

Some antidepressants, such as bupropion, are more likely to cause weight loss than weight gain. However, these antidepressants are not the best treatment for all people with depression.

Don’t let worries about weight gain affect your decision to take an antidepressant – or which one to choose. If you do start taking an antidepressant and notice some weight gain, try lifestyle changes. Eating a healthier diet and exercising regularly will not only get your weight back under control, but will have positive effects on your mood as well.

In fact, I have occasionally recommended a daily exercise program for several months as the first type of treatment for depression -- before I prescribe antidepressants. There now is very strong evidence that regular exercise can, in some people, greatly improve depression. That may not sound plausible, but we’re learning that regular exercise can affect brain chemistry in a way that protects the brain not only from depression but also from dementia.

Finally, don’t expect to see a major improvement right away.

It often takes six to eight weeks to see a response. And don’t give up if the first antidepressant doesn’t work. Trying a different one may do the trick.

Teens: What’s in a tattoo? Is it more than just ink and needle marks on the skin? Is it also an announcement that the wearer is a teenager at risk?

Maybe so. A study by the University of Rochester shows that teens with tattoos are more likely to drink, be sexually active, get into fights and engage in other risky behavior.

The study was based on data from a national sample of 6,072 people ages 11 through 20. Of the sample, 4.5 percent reported having at least one tattoo. The members of this group were twice as likely to have had sexual intercourse and three times as likely to have smoked marijuana in the past month. They were also more likely to have done binge drinking; used tobacco products; belonged to a gang; skipped school; gotten poor grades; and been in serious fights, in which either they or their opponents sustained injuries requiring medical attention.

The study also found that teens with tattoos generally have parents with lower levels of education and tend to be from single-parent families. Also, family income is likely to be lower among teens with tattoos. Gender and race were not a major factor.

States have different laws about tattooing. In some states, it is illegal for anyone under 18 to get a tattoo without permission from a parent.

This seems to be most reasonable.

My mother agrees with me, but all she can say is, “When it involves money, your father is the boss.”

But if he continues to demand the $20, pay it to him. Family harmony is worth a whole lot more.

Also, remind Dad that if you do wind up paying him interest, you can deduct that amount if you file an income tax return – AND – he must add it to his income!

That’s not a good answer. And why you’re thinking this is a good answer, I don’t know, but let’s talk about that for a minute. That’s never been done on a (game) show, where the host questions the person’s response. And I brought that to a game show business and I turned that into a really, really fun time. I’m not mean to any of the contestants. I’m only repeating back what you said, so if you said it, you can’t get mad at me for repeating it over and over and over.

His daytime talk show, which kicked off its third season Sept. 8, has thrived in an era in which similar ventures crash and burn (Katie Couric, Bethenny Frankel, Anderson Cooper and too many others to name). He won two Daytime Emmy awards, one for his talk show and another as Outstanding Game Show Host for the syndicated “Family Feud,” a franchise he’s largely credited with saving. “Think Like a Man Too,” the second movie in a franchise based on his best-selling relationship advice book, was a hit at the box office. He’s got a radio program, “The Steve Harvey Morning Show.” Plus, there’s another book coming out this fall, “Act Like a Success, Think Like a Success,” which he calls a “game-changer.”

He’s matter-of-fact about his impressive list of accomplishments, and why shouldn’t he be? Women follow his candid dating advice so closely that they frequently approach him on the street and ask, “Steve, can you find me a man?”

We got him on the phone a few weeks ago shortly after he landed in Chicago (he films his talk and radio shows there) and asked him about what’s left to conquer in the entertainment world.

Emily Yahr: So many daytime talk shows struggle and get canceled almost immediately. What sets yours apart?

Steve Harvey: I think the authenticity resonates with people for the most part, because I have opinions and I’m not afraid to say them and I don’t care if it’s politically correct or not. My thoughts on child-rearing, on dating, on relationships, on your boss, on your attitude about money, whatever it is. I’m not afraid to say it.

Yahr: The daytime talk show audience is mainly geared toward women, so what’s the most common thing you hear from women about why they like your show?

Harvey: The honesty resonates with them – a lot of times I hear that from women.

They’re interested in my take on a lot of different things. Because they know I’m going to be very honest, and they know that I speak from a position of realness, that I don’t give them canned answers. I don’t give them the answer that my publicist told me I should say, or my marketing guy told me I should say. I give it to them straight. I think that they enjoy smiling during the middle of the day.

Yahr: You cover such serious topics sometimes – people looking for missing loved ones, for example.

How do you walk that line between also making it funny?

Harvey: It’s tough because you gotta stay serious when it’s time to stay serious – I shed a couple tears on the show I wasn’t really looking for. Because some of it affects me, you know, I’m looking at

the person sitting here and I can feel their energy and they’re being very genuine and they’re really trying to pull it together. Or they’re really looking for somebody that they missed in their life, and I can relate to a person wanting something so badly and it’s not happening. ... But at the same time, I try to interject a little bit of humor when I can so we can keep everybody OK.

Yahr: When people see you on the street, do they corner you and try to ask for advice?

Harvey: The majority of things I get from women is, “Steve, can you find me a man?” That’s my number one request. I say, “Well, you know, I can help you out, but I don’t know if I can find him.

He’s going to find you.”

Yahr: You’re credited with saving “Family Feud” from cancellation in 2010. How do you inject your own personality into that show while still keeping the game running smoothly? Can you do it in your sleep at this point or is it challenging?

Harvey: It’s not a challenge at all, I’m doing the thing I was born to do. So, I think it was really, really important for me to interject more humor into the show. Every answer a person gives is not going to be on the board – I don’t care how hard the family is clapping, saying, “Good answer, good

Harvey: (Laughs.) I wish I could say that I did – that was the plan, but nah. (The publisher) told me that a huge literary book is 250,000 copies.

I told them I would sell 750,000 books. They laughed.

I heard them, they were saying, “Yeah, that’s really nice, Steve, yeah, sure. If we sell 100,000 copies we’re going to be very happy 200,000 copies and we’re bananas.”

Well what is it now? At 3.8 million copies, a movie, two movies?

Yahr: And this new book will take the same approach, just not about relationships?

Harvey: This new book, let me tell you something: This book right here, it’s gonna be a game-changer. This book right here will transform so many lives because I’m talking to where the average person is.

And you know how I know that? Because I’ve been there.

See, I’ve fallen and thought I couldn’t get back up. I’ve been written off and told I wasn’t going to ever be nothing. I jumped and took a chance, a leap of faith. I’ve been homeless. I’ve been dead broke and I’ve been well off.

The Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) solicits technical information or comments on proposed flood hazard determinations for the Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM), and where applicable, the Flood Insurance Study (FIS) report for your community.

These flood hazard determinations may include the addition or modification of Base Flood Elevations, base flood depths, Special Flood Hazard Area boundaries or zone designations, or the regulatory floodway. The FIRM and, if applicable, the FIS report have been revised to reflect these flood hazard determinations through issuance of a Letter of Map Revision (LOMR), in accordance with Title 44, Part 65 of the Code of Federal Regulations.
