Lincoln-Way North Principal Mark Cohen said before the school year began he met with student leaders from several groups such as Student Council, sports and the music department to discuss their expectations and listen to their concerns.

On Aug. 13, Lincoln-Way board members voted in a 5-2 decision to shut down the school in an effort to reduce the school district’s budget deficit. North is one of four high schools in the district, along with East, Central and West.

ROCKDALE – Rockdale police are reviewing surveillance footage near the I&M Canal Trail, where police say a jogger was sexually assaulted Sunday.

A 19-year-old woman was running on the path when a man came out of the bushes and sexually assaulted her, according to Rockdale Police Chief Robert Dykstra.

After the attack, the man told the woman to stay where she was and fled, Dykstra said.

The initial police report stated the man was armed with a knife, but Dykstra said it was unclear Sunday afternoon if that was accurate.

“Another man came jogging by and she told him what happened, and he told her the Rockdale police station was nearby, so they went there,”

Now staff and students have been meeting to talk and plan how the upcoming year will go.

“As much as there is planning for the transition, there is also listening, which will be important in the coming months,” Cohen said.

North plans to “ramp up” its homecoming celebration, he said. Students also have been talking about new activities to go along with football games. The focus right now is the school year and having students enjoy it, Cohen said.

Since the school year began Aug. 19 at North, the atmosphere has been great, he said.

He said the students seem to have a deeper appreciation for the efforts of the staff and their educational opportunities.

The Illinois Conservation Police are directing the investigation at this time, according to Dykstra, but he said Rockdale police have reached out to the Springfield-based police department to aid with the investigation.

that crime statistics along the district’s trails were not immediately available Monday – the Labor Day holiday.

Cain said district staff strongly advise anyone using trails to never walk or run alone and be aware of his or her surroundings. Other tips include having a phone ready to call 911 to report any suspicious activity, keep earphones on a low volume or use only one earpiece and always make sure someone knows where you are.

In addition to the district’s police force, Cain said the district also has a trained force of trail sentinels who help patrol 127 miles of trails and 22,000 acres of preserves.

“The district provides the sentinels with cellphones so they can call our police department or 911 if they see crime or anything suspicious. They also report maintenance issues and vandalism,” Cain said.

Families flock to Channahon’s Community Park for Labor Day holiday

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Armed with a small blue bucket of water, 8-year-old Alih Rangel chased her cousin and little brother around the Channahon Community Park’s Splash Pad on Monday.

Occasionally, the two boys retaliated and Alih would be sent in the other direction across the small water play area, her cousin Kevin Nielsen equipped with a squirt gun and sniper-like precision.

The three children zigzagged through the splash pad’s sprinklers and sprays, laughing with glee as the play area’s “bucket dump” feature – situated high above their heads – tipped over periodically as a waterfall came crashing down over their heads.

Alih’s mother, Merari Rangel, and family, watched from the sidelines.

Rangel said the Labor Day holiday was a picture-perfect unofficial end to summer for her family. Alih broke her arm early on this summer while practicing cartwheels outside the house – and those broken bones took some time to fully heal, she said.

“This is really the first time we’ve been able to come here [without her broken arm],” Rangel said. “We could not have asked for better weather.”

Rangel celebrated the Labor Day holiday Monday with her sister, brother-in-law and children. They were among the many families who, rather than going out of town for a long weekend trip, decided to stay closer to home and ventured to Channahon’s Community Park.

Chuck Damptz of Channahon said he and his family are new to the Channahon area, having just moved to the neighborhood in May.

Damptz said he and his wife typically plan a get-away vacation for the summer, but they instead spent much of their free time getting situated in the family’s new home, just blocks away from the park.

“We just didn’t have time this year. But we barbecued every chance we got,” said Damptz. “We also took the kids to drag racing events. We all love drag racing.”

He said the Labor Day holiday served as a nice change

of pace for the family after spending much of the summer working on the new home. He said he is looking forward to the new school year, with his 10-year-old daughter, Kylen Damptz, joining the track team this fall.

“School has started for them and they’re already making a lot of new friends,” Damptz said.

Beneath a nearby park shelter, about two dozen members of Fellowship Bible Church were celebrating the church group’s annual Labor Day picnic. The church

– founded in 1977 – has celebrated Labor Day with an annual picnic for as long as pastor Chuck Raines can remember.

Raines delivered a quick prayer before it was time to eat. He said the Labor Day holiday gives the close-knitted church a chance to come together as a family for a fun celebration. “[Labor Day] is really, in our minds, a chance for us to open our lives to one another and share what we have and encourage one another in the Lord,” Raines said.

Amazon gets tax credits despite calls for review

A prolonged state budget crisis that has led to public employee layoffs and the planned closing of government offices statewide hasn’t kept Illinois from extending a package of corporate tax breaks to the nation’s most valuable retailer.

First-term Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner put a hold on the corporate recruitment tool in early June amid a budget impasse that has stretched more than two months into the fiscal year.

But the state Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity said online retail giant Amazon – with a market value of nearly $250 billion – received the tax credits because of a previous commitment, with the state notifying the company of the award in late May. Amazon said its new Joliet warehouse, its first in Illinois, will create 1,000 full-time jobs.

Elected leaders and business boosters call corporate tax breaks an essential tool to lure new companies and keep existing ones. For example, Sears Holding Corp. and CME Group, the parent company of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade, both threatened to leave Illinois for states with more generous perks before lawmakers cut them both deals in 2011.

Economists say such state incentives rarely make a difference in whether a company stays or goes, and a growing number of lawmakers also question the approach.

“I’m not sure why we would provide tax credits to a company that’s already made a decision to come here,” said state Rep. Jack Franks, D-Woodstock. “If they’ve already said they’re doing this, what benefit is there to the state?”

Lyndsey Walters, a spokeswoman for the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, said the company “was looking at many different states in which to locate.”

Amazon officials declined to discuss other potential locations outside of Illinois. The Economic Development for a Growing Economy program, or EDGE program, requires that companies seeking state support must document “active consideration of a competing location in another state.”

The value of Amazon’s tax break under EDGE is not clear. The Commerce Department denied an Associated Press request for a copy of the 10-year agreement, which has not been signed yet.

The nonprofit Center for Tax and Budget Accountability in Chicago estimates that the minimum annual value of Amazon’s tax credits is $975,000, based on warehouse jobs with starting pay of $13 an hour, with some starting at nearly $15 an hour.

One state not at the bargaining table was Wisconsin, which recently agreed to provide Amazon with up to $10.3 million in tax credits in exchange for two distribution centers near Kenosha that came with the promise of 1,250 new jobs.

“The Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation was not involved in attraction efforts for the Amazon facility planned for Joliet, Illinois,”

said agency spokesman Steven Michels.

While Amazon will be able offset its corporate tax bill for up to 10 years with credits for its employees’ state withholding taxes, Illinois’ budget woes means the company can’t claim state job training money or receive further tax breaks offered to “high impact” businesses.

As a candidate last year, Rauner vowed to cap EDGE credits if elected. Once in office, he eliminated a program provision that extended those incentives to companies that merely retained jobs rather than created new ones.

In 2014, the state issued $206.5 million in EDGE tax credits – a $90 million increase from the previous year. That marked a 14-year high in a program that has issued $1.12 billion worth of corporate tax credits since 2001.

Rep. David Harris is among the lawmakers from both major parties who’ve called for further scrutiny of how the state administers tax breaks.

Although unfamiliar with the specifics of the Amazon offer, he suggested that Illinois has little choice when competing for sizable corporate investments.

“Certainly, the state is in a difficult financial situation,” he said. “But whether we like it or not, it is a competitive environment. We’ve got to be able to be in the ballpark to talk.”

Registration open for annual ‘Box City’ event

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Hundreds of people will sleep in cardboard boxes or tents this weekend as part of MorningStar Mission’s “Box City” event that aims to raise money and awareness for the realities of homelessness.

“We always hear children talking about how they didn’t realize how homeless people everyday have to figure out where they’re going to eat or where they’ll grab another sweater if it gets cold out,” said Marilyn Farmer, executive director of MorningStar Mission. “You learn [at the Box City] event that you don’t just walk into your bedroom and pull another sweater from the closet.”

Starting at 4 p.m. Friday, participants can help create a makeshift city of boxes in a field nearby the Galowich Family YMCA, 749 Houbolt Road in Joliet. Entry is $10 a person. Regardless of the weather, families will spend the night sleeping outdoors, Farmer said.

Attendees also will participate in a scavenger hunt, Farmer said. Participants will earn a ticket to the “Soup Kitchen,” where pizza will be served, when they successfully navigate Box City, searching for clues to answer a series of questions about homelessness.

Farmer said church groups, families and youth groups often take part in the annual event – now in its eighth year.

Families can expect a viewing of a child-friendly movie that ties into homelessness, too, she said.

The annual event is also a fundraiser for MorningStar Mission, said Farmer, who added the organization hopes to raise at least $20,000.

The nonprofit organization serves three meals a day and two meals on Sunday to the homeless community. The funds raised at this event will help serve about 10,000 meals – or just under a month’s worth.

Joliet school district hosts free SUMMER outdoor activities for families SAVINGS

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Public Schools District 86 will give families several incentives to come out of their homes and be active Saturday.

Some of those incentives include parachute and kite-flying activities.

Saturday will be Joliet’s ninth annual Worldwide Day of Play. The event was created

by TV network Nickelodeon in conjunction with its “Let’s Just Play” campaign, which was started to combat childhood obesity. District 86 staff are encouraging children and parents to turn off their TV – or computers – and enjoy outdoor activities.

“It’s a great way for our families and staff to connect outside the regular school day,” said Joel Sischo, coordinator

for District 86’s Health and Physical Education Program.

The event is sponsored by District 86 but is not limited to families with children who attend the district’s schools. It’s a free event open to all families, Sischo said.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at Hufford Junior High School, 112 N. Larkin Ave., and Washington Junior High School, 402 Richards St. Sischo said there will be several stations of activities, along with water and snacks. The stations will cover throwing, kicking, jumping, parachute and kite flying activities. There also will be outdoor games.

Sischo said the event was started by Nickelodeon as a way to push families to be outside more and be active.

On the day of the event, they would black out their TV pro-

grams.

According to Nickelodeon’s website, every year the TV network takes programming off the air on all of its channel and shuts down its website to reinforce the message that children need to go outside and play. These efforts resulted in thousands of events and millions of children becoming more active and healthy.

Nickelodeon has partnered with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation and the Boys & Girls Club of America on several health initiatives for children. According to BGCA, the TV network committed more than $30 million and 19 percent of its airtime to health and wellness messaging.

“We got to help carry on the tradition by encouraging families each year to come out to our site and enjoy physical activities,” Sischo said.

LOCAL BRIEF Flushing of hydrants in Romeoville to start

ROMEOVILLE – Illinois American Water will be flushing water mains and hydrants starting Tuesday in the Santa Fe Service Area in Romeoville. Flushing is scheduled to continue until the end of September.

Illinois American Water conducts an annual flushing program of its water distribution system to help ensure continued high-quality water service, according to a

news release from the company.

As part of the flushing program, fire hydrants are checked and operated to help ensure fire protection in the community.

Illinois American Water will place signs in neighborhoods where flushing is occurring. While the flushing program is underway, customers may experience a slight drop in water pressure or temporary water discoloration.

Customers should refrain from doing laundry during the time of

day the flushing program is taking place in or near their neighborhood.

If tap water is discolored, it is recommended that several cold-water faucets are allowed to run for a short time until the water runs clear. Using more than one faucet allows the water to clear faster.

COAL CITY – Veterans are invited for the third year to participate in Operation Firm Handshake, a veterans picnic aimed at providing veterans and their families with a place to kick back, relax and enjoy the day with fellow veterans.

Bill Bomba of South Wilmington said the event started two years ago when veteran Max Valdez of Coal City and a friend sat down and came up with the idea of hosting a picnic at the Coal City Area Club.

The event was attended by 40 people last year, representing all branches of the armed services, and the group is hoping this year will bring an even larger crowd.

The only requirement to attend the event is that you are a veteran or you are a family member attending with a veteran, Bomba said.

Fox Lake officer laid to rest amid sea of support

Jon Gibson, who went to Antioch Community High School with Gliniewicz, described the auditorium as dimly lit. A pianist sat in a common area at the back of the school, playing peaceful melodies while hordes of visitors stood in lines that wrapped around multiple hallways.

Jenny Shepard and Debbie Anderson, both of Antioch, are longtime friends of the Gliniewicz family. After getting through the line and saying their goodbyes, they said the tragedy has started sinking in after almost a week and described the past few nights spent with Gliniewicz’s younger brother, Michael.

Gliniewicz also left behind his wife of 26 years and four sons.

“It’s a small community where a lot of people know each other,” Anderson said, adding the turnout to the visitation was overwhelming. “We’re not used to walking through lines to say goodbye.”

The massive turnout by the public was matched by that of law enforcement. Men and women in uniform from across the country flooded the parking lot and high school. At least 1,500 police vehicles were packed into nearby lots, each

holding two or more officers, Covelli said.

It’s clear that Gliniewicz was an influential member of the community, he added, noting the large presence of not only adults, but also young people from a number of police explorer posts.

The visitation began at 9 a.m., two hours after the casket was brought into the school, passing several dozen police officers rendering a solemn salute. Gliniewicz was brought out of the school hours later as the Pipes and Dreams of the Emerald Society Chicago Police played their rendition of “Amazing Grace.”

The 18-mile procession that followed detoured in a loop through Fox Lake to Gliniewicz’s final resting place, Hillside East Cemetery in Antioch. The ceremony at the site included a last call over the radio, a flyover and a trumpeter playing taps, Covelli said.

Down the street from the school, a U.S. garrison flag was hoisted by two trucks, one belonging to the Antioch Fire Department, where Gliniewicz’s brother serves as a lieutenant.

As an officer, “he was reasonable, fair and just,” Michael Gliniewicz said during the funeral.

“When we were growing up we all knew Joe was a hero, but now the nation knows he is a hero,” he added, next speaking directly to his brother.

ANTIOCH – After the funeral of Fox Lake Police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, it’s clear the widely-known community leader will live on in the people who love him.

The sea of blue and black that overtook Antioch Community High School represented the thousands who came to pay tribute to Gliniewicz during a visitation, funeral and procession.

The desire to say a final goodbye to Gliniewicz, who was shot and killed Sept.1, was widespread throughout the state and even the country.

Illinois Gov. Bruce Rauner was among those who attended, Lake County Detective Chris Covelli confirmed, as well as out-of-state family, friends, strangers and countless law enforcement personnel, some from as far as New York.

“We are with you, Joe,” said Officer Rachel Smithberg, of the Joliet Police Department, during the funeral. “And we know you will always be with us.”

Gliniewicz, 52, died Sept.

1 after he went to investigate three suspicious men shortly before 8 a.m. in the 100 block of Honing Road in Fox Lake. The search for the suspects and the investigation into his death continued through Monday’s services.

During the funeral, Fox Lake Lt. Mark Schindler announced his comrade had been awarded a Medal of Honor.

What followed were anecdotes from some of those closest to him, laying out what kind of man he was: one who woke every day at “zero dark thirty;” one who loved coffee; and one who was unfailingly dedicated to his family, his police work and his community.

Gliniewicz’s first cousin, Denise Clingerman, left the auditorium in the afternoon to allow a large mass of the general public time at the visitation.

The auditorium, filled beyond the 425-seat capacity, was quiet, she said.

ELWOOD – One of the state’s smallest police departments recently took second-place for traffic safety.

Elwood Police recently were named the runners-up in the 2014-15 Illinois Traffic Safety Challenge. About 70 departments participated and winners were selected on their efforts to combine public information and enforcement to reduce crashes and injuries with policies, training, education and enforcement.

The challenge is funded by a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration grant administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation and corporate donations. This is the 21st year of the program.

New Joliet lost pets Facebook page takes off

Most were dogs, but a missing cat and pet snake also were posted. McFarland said some posts have been receiving up to

30,000 views.

“There really is no central local page where folks can go to for lost or found pets,” McFarland said. “There are different organizations on a national or state level, but not geographically to our area.”

While people can post photos to the page, which shows up on a side panel, McFarland is asking people who have missing pets or have located them to contact him through email at jmcfarland@jolietcity.org.

McFarland said he has gathered volunteers who can go to a found pet’s location to take photos and post them to the Facebook page.

“The main focus is to try to get these pets back, reunited with their owners,” he said.

JOLIET – A new Facebook page for lost and found pets in the Joliet area has exploded with photos and page views – and it’s only been active a little more than a week.

The “Joliet Area Lost & Found Pets” was created by Joliet City Councilman Jim McFarland on Aug. 30 as a result of the flood of requests he was receiving on his public Facebook page.

Vernon Ray Findlay, “Butch”, age 68, passed away at Hines VA Hospital in Hines, IL on August 26, 2015, from complications after surgery, with his family at his side. Born on April 16, 1947, in Joliet Illinois and has been a lifelong resident of the Plainfield/ Joliet area. He is survived by his wife, Rochelle; his children, Christine (Chris) Rerucha, Travis, Cody, Eric, and Katie; his grandchildren, Jesse, Justin, and Geena; his mother, Mildred Findlay of Plainfield; his sisters, Connie (Tim) Dechant of WI and Bonnie (Dennis) Dailey; his brother, Michael (Kim) Findlay; as well as his nieces and nephews, Skylar, Shaun, Brittany, and Shane Dailey, Tyler Findlay all of Plainfield, Angela (Cory), Gage (Brittany), and Jerad of WI, and Cole (Elena) of Canada.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Findlay.

Vern served our country proudly and was a United States Navy Vietnam Veteran. He was self-employed with contracted businesses and the latest was the Joliet Country Club. Vern retired two years ago. He enjoyed helping others and working on any kind of project.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, September 12th from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Cantigny VFW Post 367, 826 Horseshoe Dr, Joliet IL 60435. Visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. with military honors under the auspices of the United States Navy and a memorial service to follow officiated by Pastor Ron. Japanese-American World War II war hero Ben Kuroki dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS CAMARILLO, Calif. – Ben Kuroki, who overcame the American military’s discriminatory policies to become the only Japanese American to fly over Japan during World War II, has died. He was 98.

Kuroki died Tuesday at his Camarillo, California, home, where he was under hospice care, his daughter Julie Kuroki told the Los Angeles Times on Saturday.

The son of Japanese immigrants who was raised on a Hershey, Nebraska, farm, Kuroki and his brother, Fred, volunteered for service after the Dec. 7, 1941, attack on Pearl Harbor.

They were initially rejected by recruiters who questioned the loyalty of the children of Japanese immigrants.

Undeterred, the brothers drove 150 miles to another recruiter, who allowed them to sign up.

At the time, the Army Air Forces banned soldiers of Japanese ancestry from flying, but Kuroki earned his way onto a bomber crew and flew 58 bomber missions over Europe, North Africa and Japan during the war. He took part in the August 1943 raid over Nazi oil fields in Ploesti, Romania, that killed 310 fliers in his group. He was captured after his plane ran out of fuel over Morocco, but he managed to escape with crewmates to England.

Because of his Japanese ancestry, he was initially rejected when he asked to serve on a B-29 bomber that was to be used in the Pacific. But after repeated requests and a

Crew members nicknamed him “Most Honorable Son,” and the War Department gave him a Distinguished Flying Cross. He was saluted by Time magazine in 1944 under the headline “HEROES: Ben Kuroki, American.”

He was hailed a hero and a patriot at a time when tens of thousands of Japanese-Americans were confined at internment camps amid fears of a Japanese invasion of the West Coast.

After the war, Kuroki enrolled at the University of Nebraska, where he obtained a journalism degree. He published a weekly newspaper in Nebraska for a short time before moving to Michigan and finally to California, where he retired as the news editor of Ventura Star-Free Press in 1984.

Coroner: Head of dismembered toddler found in lagoon

CHICAGO – The coroner’s office in Chicago said authorities have found the head of a dismembered toddler in the city park lagoon where other body parts were found earlier.

A brief statement Monday from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said the head appears to be from an African-American child of between 2 and 3 years old. The statement doesn’t mention the victim’s gender.

Investigators began searching the lagoon Saturday after someone reported seeing what turned out to be a left foot floating in the lagoon. Officers later found a decomposed right foot and hand about 25 yards away.

The medical examiner’s office said the manner of death still hasn’t been determined. It said the head and the other parts were decomposed.

Former Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon announces bid for state senate

DU QUOIN – Former Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon is running for state senate in southern Illinois’ 58th District.

The Carbondale Democrat made the announcement Monday at the Du Quoin State Fair.

Simon says in a written statement that she’ll “stand up for Southern Illinois’ families and their jobs.” The former teacher says she’ll also campaign on the issue of funding for education.

Longtime Republican state Sen. David Luechtefeld has held the seat since 1995. Luechtefeld, the assistant minority leader since 2003, announced in June that he would not seek re-election in 2016.

Suburban Chicago sex abuse suspect dies in custody

CHICAGO – An 88-year-old suburban Chicago man charged with sexually abusing children has died in custody.

Sam Montalbano was accused of abusing young girls after luring them into his home in Elmwood Park. He had been held for nearly a year at the Cook County Jail on charges of predatory criminal sexual assault and criminal sexual abuse.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Montalbano had been receiving treatment at Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead Saturday morning.

An autopsy Sunday found Montalbano died of heart disease and complications from diabetes.

Suspect arrested in shooting over spilled beer

SAUGET – Police have arrested a St. Louis man suspected of shooting a man to death after beer was spilled on his shoes at a southwestern Illinois gas station convenience store.

Thirty-three-year-old Lamarc R. Garrett is charged with first-degree murder and is being held on $1 million bond. It was not imme-

diately clear if he already had an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported he’s in the custody of University City police in Missouri.

The killing took place Saturday in Sauget, Illinois.

Police said the gunman approached a group of friends buying beer and demanded one.

The men refused and the 12-pack slipped from the buyer’s hands, sending out a spray of beer.

Authorities said the suspect then grabbed a handgun from his car and shot one of the men.

Lawsuit filed in Chicago over breach of cheating website

CHICAGO – A new lawsuit in federal court in Chicago is

among the latest class-action suits filed against a cheaters website after hackers released detailed information of millions of users.

Chicago-based attorney Joseph Siprut filed it on behalf of a lead plaintiff referred to only as “John Doe.” The 25-page suit names Ashley Madison’s Toronto-based owner, Avid Life Media.

Similar suits have been filed in other states, including California and Texas. They all sought class-action status to represent Ashley Madison’s estimated 37 million registered users.

The Chicago suit was filed last week. It says Ashley Madison failed to take reasonable steps to protect the security of user information.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Hillary Rodham Clinton said Monday she does not need to apologize for using a private email account and server while at the State Department because “what I did was allowed.”

In an interview with The Associated Press during a Labor Day campaign swing through Iowa, the front-runner for the Democratic presidential nomination also said the lingering questions about her email practices while serving as President Barack Obama’s first secretary of state have not damaged her campaign.

“Not at all. It’s a distraction, certainly,” Clinton said. “But it hasn’t in any way affected the plan for our campaign, the efforts we’re making to organize here in Iowa and elsewhere in the country. And I still feel very confident about the organization and the message that my campaign is putting out.”

Ky, clerk appeals her jailing over gay marriage

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Attorneys for the Kentucky clerk who was jailed last week because of her refusal to issue marriage licenses to gay couples said Monday they have filed an emergency motion with a federal court that they hope will result in Kim Davis’ freedom.

The filing seeks to have Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear accommodate Davis’ “religious conviction,” and not compel her to grant licenses to gay couples, Liberty Counsel said in a statement.

“The motion requests an injunction pending appeal for an exemption from the Governor’s mandate that all county clerks issue marriage licenses,” said the statement by Liberty Counsel, which is representing Davis.

The same injunction request was denied last month by U.S. District Judge David Bunning, who jailed Davis on Thursday.

Charla Bansley, communications director for Liberty Counsel, said Davis could be released from jail immediately if the motion were granted by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit ordering Beshear to issue Davis an “accommodation” – allowing her to remove her name and title from official marriage certificates issued in Rowan County.

Putin jockeying for deal with U.S. on Syria

MOSCOW – Signs of an ongoing Russian military buildup in Syria have drawn U.S. concerns and raised questions of whether Moscow plans to enter the conflict.

President Vladimir Putin has been coy on the subject, saying Russia is weighing various options, a statement that has fueled suspicions.

Observers in Moscow have said the Russian maneuvering could be part of a plan to send troops to Syria to fight the Islamic State group in the hope of fixing fractured ties with the West. They warn, however, that Putin likely would find it hard to sell his idea to the U.S. and risks potentially repercussions if he opts for unilateral military action in Syria.

Hundreds surge past police near Hungary border, march north

By NICOLAE DUMITRACHE and SHAWN POGATCHNIK The Associated Press ROSZKE, Hungary – Hundreds of angry and frustrated asylum-seekers broke through police lines Monday near Hungary’s southern border with Serbia and began marching north toward Budapest, while Britain and France pledged to take in tens of thousands more refugees to try to ease the crisis.

As European leaders debated how to share responsibility for the more than 340,000 people from the Middle East, Africa and Asia who already are seeking refuge, Germany promised to spend billions of euros in extra aid for those already there and those yet to arrive. France weighed whether increased airstrikes against Islamic State militants would help to stem the flow of those fleeing Syria.

But the Hungarian prime minister scoffed at a proposed quota system for refugees in the 28-member European Union, saying it wouldn’t

work unless Europe first secured its borders.

Hungary’s inability to control the flow of people across its southern border with Serbia was on graphic display Monday. Crowds who had grown tired of waiting for buses at Hungary’s first migrant holding center near the border village of Roszke tore down flimsy police tape, advanced down a country road and walked around and straight through rows of police trying to block them.

Police shoved individual migrants and fired jets of pepper spray, but it had little effect as about half of the 500-strong crowd reached the M5 highway that connects Serbia and Hungary. They headed north along the shoulder, raising their arms and chanting “Germany! Germany!”

Police merely walked beside them as a lone helicopter monitored the marchers’ progress north as darkness fell.

The highway was blocked for nearly 50 kilometers (30 miles) as a precaution. A few hours

later, as the marchers paused by the roadside to try to sleep in the cold on the pavement, police delivered buses and requested they board for delivery to a refugee camp. Most refused.

The northward march mirrored Friday’s surge of people down Budapest’s motorway toward Austria, which forced Hungary to concede defeat and bus thousands to the Austrian border. Germany’s rail company said Monday it had carried 22,000 asylum- seekers over the weekend on more than 100 trains, a number boosted by the fact that Hungary again has dropped visa checks on foreigners buying train tickets for the wealthier countries to the west, particularly Germany.

Following an overnight Cabinet meeting, Germany said it would set aside 6 billion euros ($6.6 billion) to boost aid for asylum-seekers and hire 3,000 more federal police. It also planned to make it easier to build refugee housing and for non-German speakers to hold jobs.

Researchers from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention analyzed nationally representative data for 2004 through 2013 from a government surveillance system involving emergency room visits for bad drug reactions in kids aged 6 or younger. During those 10 years, there were about 640,000 ER visits involving young children who’d swallowed medicine they’d found around the house, and slightly fewer visits – about 623,000 – involving medicine intended for children and given by parents or other caregivers.

In the unsupervised group, the most common prescription drugs involved were opioids including the anti-addiction drug buprenorphine and painkillers, along with sedatives and anti-anxiety medicines.

Over-the-counter vitamins, alternative medicines and acetaminophen painkillers in pills or syrups also were commonly used.

In the supervised group, antibiotics were most commonly involved. There were no intentional poisonings.

BAD REACTIONS

The study did not list what symptoms the children had, but the implicated drugs can cause such reactions as drowsiness, breathing problems, vomiting, choking and allergic reactions including severe skin rashes.

Nearly 20 percent of ER visits for unsupervised medicine exposures resulted in hospitalization, versus 6 percent of visits involving parent-given medicine. Information on specific outcomes or any deaths

was not included, although liver damage and deaths from accidental overdoses involving acetaminophen-containing syrups have been reported in other studies.

The vice president donned a black-and-gold United Steelworkers union hat and told hundreds of union members that the gap between the wealthy and poor was hurting the nation.

“The tax code’s not fair. It’s

simply not fair,” Biden said in a city long associated with organized labor. “The wealthy aren’t paying their fair share.

Lead study author Maribeth Lovegrove, a CDC researcher, said possible reasons for the increases include rising rates of medicine use, use of antibiotics for colds and other viruses, for which the drugs are ineffective, and parents taking children to the ER rather than a doctor’s office.

Improvements in child-resistant packaging likely contributed to the decline in visits for unsupervised medicine use, but better efforts are needed, the researchers said. They noted that some newer packaging doesn’t rely on parents to remember to replace child-resistant caps. These include barriers that restrict flow of liquid medicines, and single-dose pill packages.

Lovegrove said parents should remember to relock safety caps on medicine bottles and return all medicines to a safe location after every use.

“Never tell children medicine is candy so they’ll take it,” and remind babysitters and other visitors to keep purses, bags, or coats containing medicines out of reach and sight, she advised.

CHICAGO – New research suggests parents are doing a better job of keeping household medicines out of the hands of young children.

Emergency room visits by children who swallowed medicine while unsupervised have declined substantially, reversing an earlier trend, the study found. By contrast, ER visits for bad reactions from medicines meant for kids and given by parents increased during the same time.

Here are five things to know about the study, published Monday in Pediatrics:

medicine use increased from 54,140 in 2004 to almost 76,000 in 2010, but then fell each following year, to about 60,000 visits in 2013. Visits for parent-given medicine exposure climbed steadily throughout those years, from almost 47,000 to 70,400.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Find goodness in young adults

To the Editor: This is the most difficult and, yes, heart-breaking letter I ever have submitted to your fantastic newspaper. As a longtime, proud local educator, I have witnessed firsthand the incredible grief that surrounds many teachers, coaches, family members and fellow classmates when the unthinkable occurs – teenage suicide I fully understand we never may be able to understand or comprehend the magnitude of each tragic situation, but I do strongly urge a few suggestions My suggestions are rather simple.

Adults – please stay positive and vigilant when working with young people, whether as their guardians, teachers, counselors, coaches or mentors.

And proactively find the goodness in

each situation and each young adult you encounter throughout your day. A few kind words of sincere caring can go a very long way toward making a teenager’s life much more positively focused in all regards.

These rather simple gestures can very well make a positive impact on a young person’s view of life itself and, yes, may save a precious young adult’s life.

Dunkin showed Dems their power isn’t so great There was a reason why state Rep. Esther Golar, D-Chicago, showed up late for session Wednesday.

She’s been quite ill.

Unbeknown to many of her colleagues, Golar was brought into the Statehouse on Wednesday afternoon via wheelchair.

With a weak and halting voice, Golar asked for assistance putting on a light jacket while chatting with a smattering of well-wishers before bravely walking to her seat on the House floor.

She told friends she hadn’t eaten solid food in three weeks, although she didn’t say what had made her so ill. In desperate need of intravenous fluid, Golar eventually had to be taken to a Springfield hospital.

Through it all, the six-term South Side legislator said she absolutely had to attend session because she knew it was important, not just to help override the governor’s veto of AFSCME’s now-infamous “no strike” bill, but to have her say on all the other overrides and important measures.

flames Wednesday because Rep. Ken Dunkin, D-Chicago, decided not to cut short his trip to New York and skipped the session. Numerous override motions failed by a single vote, as well as a bill designed to reverse the governor’s 90 percent cut to child care services.

Quite a few Democratic legislators were furious at their colleague. Some sent him text messages to express their displeasure after their bills went down to defeat. He had no empathy in reply, despite the fact that tens of thousands of Illinoisans, from struggling working mothers to unionized employees, will be impacted.

While it’s true the AFSCME bill – which would have prevented a strike or a gubernatorial lock-out – received only 68 of the 71 required for passage, House Speaker Michael Madigan told reporters that if Dunkin had been in town, all Democrats would have voted for it.

But Rep. Scott Drury, the sole “no” vote in the Democratic caucus, denied he ever would’ve voted to override when asked

When I asked whether Dunkin’s committee chairmanship was now in danger, Madigan said he had no plans yet to punish him. Madigan’s members were not so quick to forgive, however, and several said they hoped for some sort of retaliation.

That could get tricky, however. The House only has 71 Democrats, so Dunkin’s vote will be needed in the future.

And if organized labor goes on the attack in the spring primary, they’d better not lose.

Besides, if Madigan follows his usual path, he’ll ride to Dunkin’s rescue if the incumbent does draw a primary challenger. There is no better way to ensure a member’s undying gratitude than pulling his sorry behind out of a raging political fire.

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s top

people flatly denied they offered Dunkin anything in exchange for his no-show.

Rauner worked harder than he ever had to defeat the override motion. Greg Hinz at Crain’s Chicago Business said sources told him Rauner attended a Dunkin fundraiser this summer. But AFSCME Council 31 contributed $2,000 to Dunkin’s campaign fund in June.

Aside from Dunkin’s unexcused (and perhaps inexcusable) absence, the real problem here is twofold.

First, a large number of House Republicans voted somebody else’s conscience (Rauner’s) rather than their own, or that of their districts.

Or they wimped out and cast yet another “present” vote or didn’t vote at all.

More importantly, however, AFSCME crafted a purely partisan power play. Instead of bringing friendly Republicans into the fold, the union relied on the Democratic leaders to handle everything. And in the process, a whole lot of Democratic suburbanites were hung out to dry by their leaders.

This was, in other words, a typical Illinois Democratic move. In that world, “bipartisanship” too often means Republicans are forced to vote for Democratic bills as is.

Just look at Wednesday’s floor action. Instead of accepting some of the governor’s relatively minor amendatory vetoes, the Democrats instead chose to override him and failed miserably. All those underlying bills – encompassing hundreds of hours of work – are now dead.

So, maybe Dunkin unintentionally did his Democratic colleagues a favor. He showed them their power isn’t as great as they thought it was. The absence of a single legislator completely undermined their quest to send messages of total defiance to the GOP governor.

Wednesday’s abject failures showed yet again Illinois is no longer a one-party state.

Hopefully, some Democrats paid attention.

UPBEAT ABOUT SEASONS Both Saint Xavier, USF see positives after early matchup against each other

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Saturday’s annual matchup between the football teams from the University of St. Francis and Saint Xavier University was one of the more dramatic ones in the series, although neither side was all that thrilled afterward.

Cougars coach Mike Feminis was pleased to get a 34-28 victory over his alma mater after dropping their opener,

and Saints coach Joe Curry was happy to see his squad threaten to pull out a win after trailing by 17 points early in the final quarter.

But the most important thing both Saint Xavier and USF drew from the game was that it’s not where you start, but where you finish. In that regard, both teams are encouraged they have what it takes to put together successful seasons.

After falling in the NAIA

semifinals last season, the Cougars entered the preseason ranked fourth in the NAIA. But they dropped a 45-13 decision to top-ranked Marian last week and have a ways to go to get to reach the usual heights the program has enjoyed under Feminis, who is 145-51 in 17 seasons.

While the 1990 USF graduate – who was a hall of fame player and later coached for the Saints – was glad to pick up his 15th win in 16 tries against

his old school, he knows the Cougars can play a lot better – and will once they get over a few of the injuries that have altered some of the more creative things that he and offensive coordinator Mark Yanule, another USF graduate, usually have in store for opponents.

“It wasn’t a Picasso, that’s for sure,” Feminis said. “But I told our guys, ‘Don’t ever apologize for winning.’ We had our chances to blow it open in the third quarter, and we didn’t,

and it’s a learning experience for us on both sides of the ball.

When you’ve got a team down, you’ve got to bury them – and, historically, we’re pretty darn good at that. We’re happy to win, but we know that we have to get better.

“We know that St. Francis is going to give us everything that they’ve got every time that they play us, and they did.

South’s ‘D’ was good test for Joliet West There usually are multiple ways to dissect what transpires in a football game.

Joliet West coach Jason Aubry and his staff were in that situation after Friday’s 21-6 victory at Plainfield South.

There is no disputing that the West defense played very well, especially after shaking off the penalty bug that hampered the flow of the first quarter.

Offensively, the Tigers did enough to score three firsthalf touchdowns, and they controlled the ball much of the second half. But was that enough?

“I know our offensive coaches weren’t happy [with 21 points],” Aubry said.

“Everyone would like to score more points all the time. But when you look at it, the other team’s defense is out to stop you, and South has a very good defense.”

If fact, Aubry considered the Cougars an ideal opponent on the week preceding the huge SouthWest Suburban Blue opener Friday night at home against Lincoln-Way East.

“We thought they [Cougars] were a lot like Lincoln-Way East, defensively,” Aubry said. “They are good, and they do a lot of the same things East does.

“We got through this one.

We’re happy to be 2-0. Now we have got to step up if we want to get to the postseason again.”

West qualified for the playoffs for the first time last season and dropped a 31-7 first-round decision to Oswego. That game was tied at 7 late in the first quarter when quarterback Alex Tibble exited with a high ankle sprain.

Tibble is back – and perhaps, because of that, the Tigers feel as if they can score

“Our defense has been playing very well, and that’s huge,” Aubry said.

As for South – as much of a hole as the Cougars are in at 0-2 – they know that with the defense they have, they are not out of the playoff picture, not by a long shot.

“Our defense has been bringing tremendous energy and effort,” South coach Ken Bublitz said. “But we need the other two aspects [offense and the kicking game].”

South will begin Southwest Prairie play Friday night at Plainfield East. With the Bengals also 0-2, that shapes up as a must-win for both sides.

In this, the last season before Joliet West and Joliet Central join the Southwest Prairie, the conference promises another round of wild and crazy results. Oswego is the king until someone proves otherwise, but how many others in the league will be playoff bound – and who those others will be – is anyone’s guess.

South, for example, can work its way into the hunt.

“We have the energy and effort on defense, but the execution is lacking on the offensive end,” Bublitz

said. “We have to get better.

That’s on all of us. That’s on me and the coaching staff.

We all have to execute better and find a way to get some consistency.”

Bublitz tried two quarterbacks, Nicholas Deppe and Jackson Howarth, against West. He tried running back Jake Maher from the Wildcat formation. But a series of penalties – the Cougars were whistled 15 times for 156 yards – helped spoil whatever consistency they attempted to find.

“We’re just not hitting on all cylinders,” Bublitz said.

But much like Joliet West, the Cougars have a strong enough defense to help win plenty of games the rest of the way. Their degree of success will depend heavily on other aspects of the game.

“We have a lot of talent here, but we just have to get to the point where we’re beating the No. 4 team in the country,” Curry said. “We’re close, and we’ll get there. I thought that we were right there in the first half, but I just think that we could have played a lot better and that would maybe had the first-half score tied or with us up by a little bit. With our potential and what we have, that just wasn’t coming out in the first half.

“Mike does a great job, and it’s always a challenge for us to go out and play them. I told our team that if we do what we’re supposed to do and take care of business week-to-week, then we might get another shot at them, and that’s what you want. Our job is to improve as a football team every week, and we will. It only goes up from here.”

Senior setter MacKenzi Welsh garnered the first Joliet Herald-News Player of the Week honors after leading Plainfield East to a 5-2 start. Welsh totaled 109 assists (15.6 per match), 29 kills (4.1 per match) and 24 aces (3.4 per match) in the first seven games.

Before the season, Welsh was ranked the No. 40 recruit in the country by PrepVolleyball.

Going into the season, she wanted to make varsity so she should could play with her sister for two years. She also wanted to be a part of a team that is driven to get better each season.

“This year, I was really excited to start high school and possibly play with my sister,” Katie Shook said.

“When tryouts came, I gave it all and made varsity. I’m really excited to be a part of this team and repeat what they did last year. I watched them win regionals. I think it’ll be a great year.”

“Last season, we had Bitzy [Hyland], and we lost her this year, but we’ll have players that will step up and try to take her leadership position. We’re going to work harder than we did last year so we can have a better record. Last year was great, but we want to keep improving and be awesome this year.”

To be as successful this year, the Wildcats will look to setter Ashley Shook and two senior outside hitters – Eulitz and Hotchkin – for their leadership.

Both outsides will have to take on larger offensive roles and all three players will have to lead by example.

Vogt thinks that they could do it because of the experience they gained from club play in the offseason.

Ashley Shook helped win the AAU National Championship-Open Division with Sports Performance’s 18 Elite team, while Hotchkin (18 White) took second in Club and Eulitz (18 Wave) second in Classic.

By competing at high levels, the three will be ready to battle in tough situations. They also learned from last year that the key to a successful season will be to be a close team with great chemistry.

Although the Wildcats have one dinner together a week and have study parties before weight-lifting sessions, their chemistry will only grow throughout the season because each girl has the same goal.

The entire team worked hard in the offseason to keep Central’s volleyball program going in the right direction.

This year, they hope experience from last year and club play will take them far.

“We’re all really experienced,” Eulitz said. “Most of us were starters last year. We lost one really good starter, but we’re all going to work together. We have Ashley [Shook], too, so we have some really good players still. All of our club seasons went well, so we’ve all gotten better over the offseason. I think this season will be even better [than last].”

PLAINFIELD – Going into this volleyball season, Plainfield Central was returning every starting player except for one.

On paper, that seems as if it would be easy to fill, but that player happens to be Southwest Prairie Conference Player of the Year and a three-time Herald-News All-Area player Elizabeth Hyland.

Last season, Hyland and now junior setter Ashley Shook were looking to make the Wildcats volleyball program a threat. And they did just that.

With Hyland playing at Lewis University now, however, that gives more Wildcats the opportunity to shine and cement their own place in Central’s volleyball foundation.

“We have a lot of newcomers on the team,” Wildcats coach Erik Vogt said. “Katie Shook is definitely going to make an impact this year. She’s a libero/defensive specialist. Erin Eulitz, who was an all-conference player last year, did a really good job in the off-season. ... A majority of our returners are underclassmen – Megan Brock in the middle, Joanna Poznanski in the middle, Claire Hotchkin going from the right side to the outside.

“We have a lot of players who played a high level of club in the offseason. The girls have spent a lot of time getting better. You’re really going to see a lot of kids take on a role that is different for us after we lost Elizabeth Hyland.”

Last season, the Wildcats were one win from tying the school record for wins, and they made it to the sectional final. Although it might take a few games for Central (3-3) to find its new rhythm, the team looks to build off that success.

The team thinks it can be just as successful because it is more well-rounded and won’t be reliant on one hitter. Almost every player had a successful club season and worked hard so the Wildcats could return potentially stronger.

“Our record last year has put a lot of pressure on us; but we’ve worked hard, and we feel that we will be able to accomplish big things this year also,” Hotchkin said. “As a collective group, we’ve gotten so much better. Our libero, our hitters, every single girl has all stepped up to fill what we lost [Hyland].

“I think that we’ll be just as good, if not better.”

In the end, it was probably better he didn’t know about the Cubs’ sorry 1-6 record at Busch Stadium.

“I didn’t know we had struggled here,” Haren said after working seven innings in a 9-0 victory Monday Dan Haren over the Cardinals.

“Everyone has struggled against the Cardinals this year; they’re the best team, record-wise.”

The NL Central-leading Cardinals maintained a 5½-game lead over Pittsburgh, which lost, 3-1, to Cincinnati. The Cubs are 7½ games back.

Dexter Fowler had a leadoff home run and two-run double in the first two innings.

Before the game, manager Joe Maddon said he told Fowler: “You go, we go. He gets up there and makes us go.”

Fowler matched his season best

for RBIs and became the Cubs’ first switch-hitter to score 90 runs since Brian McRae scored 111 in 1996.

“I’m seeing the ball well, barreling balls well,” Fowler said. “The team camaraderie is awesome right now, even with the new guys coming in.”

Addison Russell’s three-run homer capped a five-run third that made it 8-0. The Cubs have won four in a row and got an 11-game trip off to a rocking start.

“We’ve got to beat them here, that’s really important regarding our development,” Maddon said. “So, it’s a nice first step, but let’s have another one-game winning streak tomorrow.”

Haren (9-9) had five strikeouts and two walks. He also contributed a single and sacrifice fly.

Lance Lynn (11-9) surrendered six runs in 21⁄3 innings on nine days’ rest after getting extra time to recover from a sprained ankle in his last start. The ankle wasn’t the issue.

The Cardinals are 3-4 on this homestand with two games to go. They’re a major league-best 49-24 at Busch Stadium, but this was their most lopsided setback at home. They’ve been outscored 16-1 the last two games.

CHICAGO – Chris Sale considers it his job to stop losing streaks and extend winning streaks. That’s why he believes he let down his White Sox teammates Monday.

Ryan Raburn hit a pair of solo home runs and Trevor Bauer pitched two-hit ball for seven innings as the Cleveland Indians ended the Sox’s four-game winning string, 3-2, Chris Sale Monday.

Raburn has eight multihomer games in his career, four of them against the Sox. He connected both times against Sale and is 10 for 33 with four home runs lifetime versus the lefty ace.

“Today was my day to pick them up, and I didn’t,” Sale said. “I need to be that guy to be able to pick up my team, because they’ve picked me up my last time out. The only two losses we’ve had in the last week were on my day, so I’ve got to do something to change that and come out fighting next time.”

Raburn, who only plays against left-handers, is 7 for 18 (.389) with three homers and five runs batted in Chicago this season. For his career, he’s hitting .296 with 20 homers and 82 RBI against the Sox. Sale (12-8) struck out eight in seven innings. He has fanned 247 this year, nearing the single-season team record of 269 set by Ed Walsh in 1908.

“It stinks giving up homers,” Sale said. “Usually, solo shots don’t hurt you; but when you give up damn near a handful of them, it’s tough.”

The Sox took a 2-0 lead in the second before getting a hit. Bauer started the inning by walking Avisail Garcia, J.B. Shuck and Mike Olt on 12 pitches.

Carlos Sanchez drove in the first run with a groundout and Tyler Fowlers had a sacrifice fly, but Bauer was happy to escape with just the two runs scoring.

The Indians tied it in the fourth on solo home runs by Mike Aviles and Raburn. In the sixth, Raburn made it 3-2 when he hit another solo homer, a 425-foot drive over the left-field bullpen and into the bleachers.

“I don’t know,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said when asked to explain Raburn’s success against his team.

Edwards’ Southern 500 victory was a ‘shot in the arm’

By PETE IACOBELLI The Associated Press DARLINGTON, S.C. – Joe Gibbs couldn’t help but beam about this team victory: Carl Edwards drove superbly, crew chief Darian Grubb made stellar calls with his car two laps down and the No. 19 crew got the car out of the pits in first when it counted most.

The result was Edwards’ first win in the Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

“If you drew this one up tonight, I don’t think you could draw a bigger victory for us,” Gibbs said after Sunday night’s race.

Edwards rallied after falling two laps down because of a flat tire, then beat Brad Keselowski off pit road for the lead 12 laps from the end and held on for his first Southern 500

victory Sunday night.

Edwards won the Coca Cola 600 in May and had six top-10s in the past seven races. Still, he was looking for a boost that would propel his first-year Joe Gibbs Racing program into the playoffs.

“This is what we needed,” Edwards said. “We really needed a shot in the arm.”

And now Edwards heads into the chase bursting with confidence in the entire team.

He was two laps behind after this flat around Lap 90. He was in 36th place on Lap 140. But there he was at the end, pushing pole-sitter Keselowski and defending-Southern 500-winner Kevin Harvick 40 laps from the end.

Keselowski was second and Denny Hamlin finished third.

brothers Kurt and Kyle.

Edwards gave Joe Gibbs Racing its seventh victory in the last 10 events. JGR swept the weekend, with Hamlin winning the Xfinity race Saturday.

Keselowski started on the pole and by far led the most laps with 196. But he was beaten out of the pits by Edwards on Darlington’s record-setting 18th caution period with 12 laps left.

WHAT A LONG RACE: The Southern 500 lasted four hours, 28 minutes, almost a half hour longer than the Coca Cola 600 last May in Charlotte, an event where drivers went 100 more miles. A big reason for the slow down was a record-setting 18 caution periods at Darlington, besting the mark of 17 set during the 2009 race.

THROWBACKS ARE FUN: The 1970s retro weekend was a hit with fans, drivers, race teams and almost anyone who remembers what it was like four decades ago. There were 35 race teams who participated in some sort of ’70s paint scheme for the Southern 500. Kyle Larson may have taken the

prize for his Kyle Petty-style mustache and curly wig while driving a Mello Yello machine.

Larson ran among the leaders most of the race and finished 10th.

LOW DOWNFORCE PACKAGE:

Drivers couldn’t say enough good things about the low downforce package used at Darlington for the Southern 500. Dale Earnhardt Jr. said on Twitter, “That was some fun!!

I loved the new low downforce package.”

The consensus is that the softer tires and low downforce package give drivers the chance to manage their cars and make moves when necessary. That was apparent with 24 green-flag passes for the lead, which NASCAR Stats said was the second highest total at Darlington since the inception of loop data in 2005.

Fowler rallies, wins Deutsche Bank NORTON, Mass. – Rickie Fowler delivered all the right shots Monday at the Deutsche Bank Championship, and then he delivered some champagne, after a tense duel with Henrik Stenson at the TPC Boston.

Trailing by three shots early on the back nine, Fowler rolled in a 40-foot putt on the 14th hole to pull within one and then seized control when Stenson hit a towering tee shot that came down short and into the water for double bogey on the par-3 16th.

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – As she sat in a chair near the TV set in her family’s living room and listened to the weather report, Angie Sanchez of Joliet looked alarmed and started fanning herself.

It’s Sanchez’s way of telling her family hot weather is coming.

“I had to choose between remodeling or fixing the air conditioner,” said Sanchez’s mother and caretaker, Debbie Robertson. “I went with the air conditioner.”

Robertson has cared for Sanchez since 2007, when Sanchez had two strokes two months apart following the birth of her son, Jose. Robertson also cares for Jose, now 8. The family has begun a Go Fund Me account to raise $7,000 for a ramp and adaptive van so Sanchez finally can see the world again.

Dr. George Dietz, a home visiting family practice doctor based in Oak Park who sees Sanchez monthly, feels these items are important for Sanchez’s overall well-being.

Except for hospitalizations, Sanchez has been housebound since her strokes.

“I think it’s kind of stupid to spend the rest of your life interacting with a TV set,” Dietz said.

Jose said he wants to take his mother to zoos and water parks, and can anticipate her delight at them.

“She’d probably laugh,” Jose said.

Angie’s battle

Although Dietz did not begin caring for Sanchez until April 2008, when she was 21, he said his records show Sanchez had her first stroke in May 2007 several days after giving birth. Sanchez came home in a wheelchair and had a second stroke July 2.

hospital and had a shunt inserted in the left side of her brain to reduce pressure.

When Dietz met Sanchez in 2008, she was receiving oxygen through a tracheostomy. In addition, Sanchez was receiving periodic treatment at what is now Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet for a bedsore.

“She could not blink; she could not say a word; and she could not move to any great extent,” Dietz said of that time.

Dietz noted that Sanchez also was of normal weight in 2008. Sanchez had weighed 300 pounds at the beginning of her pregnancy, according to Sanchez’s records, Dietz said, and had quit smoking around the time of her pregnancy. She initiated breastfeeding in the hospital.

Although stroke patients show the most improvement within the first two years following the stroke, Dietz is heartened by the progress Sanchez has shown since

2008. It took much effort, but Dietz said Sanchez finally was able to have in-home rehabilitation, which the mother is continuing on her own.

“The trick now is to get her [Sanchez] out of the house,” Dietz said.

Robertson clearly recalled the day of Sanchez’s second stroke. The family was having a barbecue at the house when Robertson said one of her sons noticed Sanchez was rocking.

At the hospital, Robertson said Sanchez had a seizure and eventually slipped into a coma.

Bell,” a nickname the sisters shared between them.

“She squeezed my hand,” Annabel said. “I jumped in the air, I was so happy. I said, ‘Come on, Angie, squeeze my hand again.’ ” And Angie did.

The present situation

While caring for Jose, Robertson also had to learn about PICC (peripherally inserted central catheter) lines and giving nourishment through feeding tubes. She feeds, bathes and dresses her daughter, and gives her medication to control seizures and high blood pressure, and to prevent blood clots.

Now Robertson also is helping with efforts to raise the ramp money.

“We got fliers, and we went door-to-door,” Robertson said.

“We put fliers all over, and we put it up on Facebook.”

Annabel feels community support would help Sanchez beyond her physical need for a ramp.

“It would show that she’s not alone, that people care,” Annabel said.

In April, Sanchez was back in the hospital to have an abscess on her skull drained.

Robertson said she has faith that God will continue to heal Sanchez. Annabel also feels further improvement is possible.

“Angie is strong,” Annabel said.

Even Dietz would agree with that.

“She’s out of bed; she takes steps; she says words; and she knows what’s going on,” Dietz said. “The next step is to get her out of that house.”

Class to prevent falls among older adults to be held in Shorewood

SHOREWOOD – “A Matter of Balance: Managing Concerns About Falls” is a class designed to reduce the fear of falling and increase activity levels among older adults. Medical Clinic to offer diabetes prevention program in Joliet and Morris

JOLIET – The Will-Grundy Medical Clinic will offer a diabetes prevention program that starts Sept. 15.

The clinic is screening participants to determine if they fall within the pre-diabetic range.

The clinic was awarded a two-year grant through the American Medical Association’s Healthy Communities/Healthy America program to implement a lifestyle change program. It uses the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Diabetes Prevention Program, which meets for 16 consecutive weeks, followed by eight monthly visits.

Classes will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesdays at the Will-Grundy Medical Clinic, 213 E. Cass St., Joliet; Thursday classes will meet from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Canalport Community Center at 518 Illinois Ave., Morris.

Some columnists recommend that with a minimum 6-4, you bid the six-card suit twice, then (if there is another round) show the four-card suit. But with extra values, you bid six, four, six.

This is definitely wrong with six spades and four hearts; show those majors.

At least rebidding the six-card suit limits the hand to 12-14 points, when rebidding in a new suit shows some 1217 points. But it risks missing a much better fit in the second suit.

In this auction, South should have passed out two hearts. His two-notrump rebid promised a maximum pass. True, North might have continued with three diamonds, backing into the best contract. Two hearts and three diamonds would surely have made.

Two no-trump was another story.

West led his fourth-highest club, East put in the nine, and South won with his king. Now declarer should have started to establish dummy’s heart suit. Most people meet the RDA for vitamin C through their diets. Citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C. Sweet red pepper is another excellent, but less well known, source of vitamin C. (I’ve put a table listing good food sources of vitamin C on my website, AskDoctorK.com.)

Just because vitamin C doesn’t appear to boost your immune system doesn’t mean there are no “natural” immune system boosters. Indeed, if you want to strengthen your immune system and boost your ability to fight off colds, try exercise.

Regular moderate aerobic exercise can bolster your protection from common respiratory infections.

Sleep is also important.

People who get enough sleep are less prone to upper respiratory infections. For example, I have a long-standing tendency to get sinus infections. If I go two nights without at least seven hours of good sleep, I often can feel a new infection starting.

People who eat diets high in fruits and vegetables also appear to be less likely to catch colds.

(Though it’s less certain that the diet alone is responsible.) Some studies also found increased susceptibility to colds with increasing levels of stress.

So reducing stress may also help.

In short, while regular use of vitamin C is unlikely to protect you against colds, there are other things you can do to protect yourself and strengthen your immune system.

Dear Dr. K: Whatever happened to the idea that vitamin C can boost your immune system and prevent colds?

Dear Reader: Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, was promoted as a health supplement for decades. It is perhaps best known for its one-time reputation for preventing and treating the common cold. This idea was heavily promoted in the 1970s by one of the 20th century’s most celebrated biochemists, Nobel laureate Linus Pauling.

But Pauling did not win the Nobel Prize for his theories about vitamin C. Vitamin C is crucial for making collagen, the substance that lends structural support to tendons, ligaments, bones and blood vessels.

Vitamin C is also a potent antioxidant. As the cells in our body do their jobs, they produce a group of harmful chemical waste products called “free radicals.” These free radicals are also created by environmental factors such as tobacco smoke, ultraviolet rays and air pollution.

Antioxidants can chemically combine with free radicals, rendering them harmless.

Unfortunately, despite the hype, vitamin C does not appear to prevent colds, and its ability to shorten the duration of colds is minimal. A recent summary of 29 studies involving more than 10,000 people confirmed the lack of benefit of regular vitamin C supplementation.

There also is little evidence that vitamin C supplements prevent cancer, heart disease or cataracts.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for men is 90 milligrams (mg) per day. Women should get 75 mg per day. If you are a smoker, add 35 mg per day to your recommended amount. Taking vitamin C supplements in amounts far higher than the RDA offers no proven

Dear Abby: I am 44 and my husband of 20 years is 48. On a recent second honeymoon trip to Sweden, I became pregnant. We already have two beautiful, intelligent daughters, 17 and 14. One started university this fall while the other’s a high school sophomore.

My problem is not so much the high-risk pregnancy, but rather that both of my girls strongly oppose the idea of us keeping the baby. Not only were they not thrilled when I broke the news to them, but they also cried.

My younger daughter is now giving me the cold shoulder. She doesn’t like change and thinks having a sibling will disrupt our life.

My older girl said she is glad she will be at the university so she won’t have to have anything to do with the baby.

I am deeply hurt by their reactions. I need help to talk to them. Please give me some advice. – Expecting in

Philadelphia has a very large transit system. Surely there is alternate transportation for her -- buses, taxis, Uber and Lyft come to mind.

If she was so traumatized by the accident that she’s afraid to get behind the wheel again, she may need a therapist to overcome it.

Whatever the reason, this won’t stop until you and your husband quit enabling her. Give her a list of what’s available and “suggest” she use it the next time she calls wanting a ride. If she needs groceries, offer to order them online for her yourself if she isn’t computer literate. And your husband should also offer to help her find a new car.
