Schools built during the last few decades of the 19th century and early decades of the 20th century largely were standardized, utilitarian spaces that were designed to house as many students as possible while maximizing classroom space.

Before the turn of the 20th century, there was a considerable amount of research and writing devoted to the need for standard school buildings, particularly in urban areas, a change from the early American years of the one-room schoolhouse.

An early model for the standard classroom was drawn up

by Horace Mann, an early education reformer, which called for standard rows of desks, windows on two sides of the room and a number of other necessary amenities to the building.

Of fundamental importance to school designers during this period was constructing a building with good ventilation, adequate heating and proper illumination. School buildings often were carefully planned and situated to take advantage of the best natural lighting conditions.

Most schoolhouses during this time had specific window locations on both sides of the building that help to capture the natural light from outside, while also providing proper ventilation in the rooms.

A good example of a school building that used the new standardize design was found in early Mokena. In 1872, a new, two-story elegant woodframe building with a stone basement was built on the

Will County leads in job growth, welcomes big-name companies Recent job developments in Will County

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – As Labor Day arrives, local experts say there’s much to celebrate in Will County in terms of job growth.

More than 10,500 jobs were created in the county from June 2014 to June 2015 across all industry sectors, according to data from the Workforce Investment Board of Will County.

The county’s job growth rate exceeds Cook County and some of the competing collar counties, said Pat Fera, manager of the board.

Will County experienced a 3.9 percent job growth rate between June 2014 and June 2015, compared to Cook County’s 1.1 percent and DuPage County’s 1.8 percent, according to board data. The statewide average was 1.3 percent and the national average was 2.2 percent over that same time period.

“It’s partly because we have the availability of labor here. ... Employers can come here and expand here and find labor quickly,” Fera said.

“It makes it a very attractive place.”

Companies also are choosing Will County because of the BNSF intermodal in Elwood and the Union Pacific intermodal in Joliet, and the county’s proximity to Chicago and easy access to Interstates 80 and 55, and the Interstate 355 interchange.

The region’s biggest industries remain transportation and warehousing, manufacturing, and health care and social assistance, Fera said.

But the construction industry led the pack in terms of job growth in the second quarter of 2015 compared to the same time last year, board data stated. Construction trades saw a 9 percent gain in jobs from 2014 to 2015, Fera said, which has bigger implications for the county overall.

That has implications for the entire Will County economy in terms of tax revenues.”

Transportation and logistics businesses are seeing major growth in the Romeoville and Bolingbrook areas, said John Greuling, president and CEO of the Will County Center for Economic Development. Joliet and the rest of Will County also are seeing a fair share of job growth.

The county has welcomed several major businesses in the past year, including online retail giant Amazon, Sweden-based home furnishings retailer IKEA and tire manufacturer Michelin, all of which are bringing distribution centers to the area. Amazon is expected to create 1,000 full-time, permanent positions in Joliet,

In August, Swap.com – an online consignment marketplace that sells baby and maternity clothing – signed a five-year lease for a 361,176-squarefoot facility in Bolingbrook. The company plans to have 700 employees by the end of 2016.

In August, online retail giant Amazon announced that Joliet will be the site of the company’s first fulfillment center in Illinois – a move that will create 1,000 full-time jobs. Amazon is retrofitting a 500,000-square-foot warehouse in the Laraway Crossings Business Park at Route 53 and Laraway Road to fill online orders and process small items, such as books, electronics and consumer goods.

In July, LG Electronics MobileComm extended its 377,630-squarefoot lease in Bolingbrook.

In July, Ashley Furniture opened a new 424,525-square-foot retail and distribution center at 1045 W. Crossroads Parkway in Romeoville.

In July, Cullinan Properties, a real estate investment firm specializing in developing and managing a wide range of industry development, purchased a 264-acre site at the northeast intersection of interstates 55 and 80 in Joliet.

In July, the DeLong Co. announced it would be expanding its space within CenterPoint Properties’ intermodal in Joliet. The company plans to relocate its 15-acre transload operations from Channahon to a planned 25-acre site.

He said the county is not building warehouses anymore.

“Goods aren’t staying in one location for very long.

They spend more time moving than they do stationary,”

We’re building logistics centers. We’re building essential pieces of the international supply chain.”

There’s also Saddle Creek Logistics, which has plans to locate its corporate headquarters in Joliet, Greuling said.

It fits in perfectly with the Center for Economic Develop-

ment’s strategy to bring additional corporate headquarters and possibly a Fortune 2000 company to Will County.

“That’s a tall order,” he said. “But if the headquarters are here, the heart and soul of the company is here. If the company is thriving, it’s very beneficial to the community.”

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Seven-year-old Isabel Sanchez of Joliet was fascinated Saturday by the Joliet Fire Department’s fire truck during the Harvey Brooks Foundation’s annual Labor Day weekend festival.

“I’ve seen them outside my school before,” Isabel said before asking Mike Stapp, apparatus operator with the department, about the equipment and how firefighters fight house fires.

Stapp said one fire truck is designed for rescue and ventilation while a second is designed to supply water via a fire hydrant.

Isabel was among the children who attended day two of the Joliet nonprofit’s threeday Gospel Fest at the organization’s location at 100 McDonough St. The event is now in its 11th year.

Along with the fire trucks, the event featured gospel music, children’s activities and local vendors in Joliet’s southeast side. The Joliet Police Department also issued child safety IDs. Joliet Police Officer Chuck Mascolino, with the depart-

are important for both parents and law enforcement in the event a child goes missing or something happens to them.

The Harvey Brooks Foundation – which aids low-income and underserved families in the city – depends on the event to help raise money for its community programs, said Tempie Bates, the organization’s executive director.

Some of those programs include a full-day preschool program for children ages 3 to 5; after-school tutoring; and recreational and organized activities, such as karate and music. The foundation also offers life-skill and job-training programs, as well as summer youth employment.

Demand for services has increased with the state budget crisis in Springfield, Bates said. Childcare costs are on the rise and eligibility standards have become more stringent under the Rauner administration.

That makes the nonprofit’s free after-school childcare program all the more valuable to parents in the community, she said.

The weekend festival raises funds to “help keep our doors open,” Bates said.

Health fair highlights family fun and education

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Free medical services and kids attractions will highlight the activities at Laraway School and Vulcan Materials Company’s annual community health fair Saturday.

The fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Laraway School gym at 275 Laraway Road in Joliet. After the fair, the Laraway School Parent-Teacher Organization

secured a Northern Illinois Food Bank mobile food pantry, which will open from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

“We’d like it to be more of a family event,” said Laraway School District 70C nurse Cheryl Stokes, an event organizer. “With the economy the way it is, it’s hard to get everyone together and learn about health.”

Now, vendors such as Walgreens, Chuck E. Cheese’s, Alzheimer’s Association, East Joliet Fire Department and All Creations ‘R’ Unique are setting up booths.

“This event brings families together and helps them forget about the many troubling circumstances that they have at home,” Stokes said. “The smiles on the faces of the participants make it all worth the hard work.”

Jogger sexually assaulted on I&M Canal Trail

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com ROCKDALE – A jogger was sexually assaulted Sunday on the I&M Canal Trail, police said.

A 19-year-old woman was running on the path when a man came out of the bushes and sexually assaulted her, according to Rockdale Police

Chief Robert Dykstra.

After the attack, the man told the woman to stay where she was and fled, Dykstra said. The initial police report stated the man was armed with a knife, but Dykstra said it was unclear Sunday afternoon if that was accurate.

“Another man came jogging by and she told him what happened and he told her the

Rockdale police station was nearby so they went there,” Dykstra said.

The pair approached an officer outside the station about 11 a.m. The victim was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

The Illinois Conservation Police are directing the investigation, according to Dykstra.

Plainfield man shot in head in Aurora The HERALD–NEWS AURORA – A 22-yearold Plainfield man was shot in the head early Saturday morning in Aurora, according to police.

At about 12:45 a.m., officers responded to the 600 block of North Lake Street for a disturbance, an Aurora Po-

lice Department news release stated.

Upon arrival, they found the man lying in the middle of Illinois Avenue at the intersection with Lake Street, according to the release. He was unconscious and suffering from a gunshot to the head.

The man was brought to a local hospital and then trans-

ferred to another Chicago area hospital.

Witnesses said the incident originated at a party being thrown at a nearby business, the release stated.

As of the release’s distribution, the victim is in critical condition.

The department’s investigation is ongoing.

Later, in the 1990s, when Minola won a spelling contest, a former student contacted her and invited Minola to join their monthly lunches, which Minola did up until the last month of her life, Merrily said.

Minola also corresponded with inmates and befriended nursing home residents who had no family or friends by visiting them, making special occasions of their birthdays and surprising them with little gifts. Merrily said.

And yet, Minola definitely had a mischievous side, Kerry said. Minola wasn’t above sneaking a jelly bean or two from her nieces and nephews Easter baskets or talking herself out of a speeding ticket.

This is how she understood the “underdogs,” Kerry added.

“She always gravitated toward the child that was a little naughty and she’d be naughty right with them,” Kerry said.

“Her love was authentic.”

Still, Minola never held a grudge. No matter the offense, it was always forgiven and forgotten by bedtime. In the days shortly before her death on March 22 at the age of 96, Merrily said Minola asked, “Can you think of anyone I might have missed, someone I did not pay attention to?”

And Merrily said she answered, “No, Mother. I think you covered it all.”

This, said Merrily Kennedy of Elwood, was her mother, Minola Sturm.

“She was so warm and open that people felt they knew her a long time,” Merrily said. “She had a happy heart.”

Minola never felt a day was complete unless she left the house – even in her later years and even if it was just an errand at the post Minola Sturm office – and she left it dressed to the nines. But simply leaving the house wasn’t enough for Minola – not with so many opportunities for serving.

In addition to Minola’s devotion to her late disabled daughter Sheila Harrigan Minola – with her late husband Jack Sturm – Minola began Shepherd’s Table and continued to volunteer for at it until she was in her 80s, Merrily said.

Minola also volunteered with the CCW at her home parish St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manhattan, the Joliet Women’s Club, FISH, the Will Country Historical Society and Meals on Wheels.

“She’d go into any neighborhood. She had no fear,” Merrily said. “She just believed in people. She just believed that no one would hurt her.”

Minola never missed a

homecoming event at the University of St. Francis and was honored with a bouquet of flowers at the one she attended last fall, Merrily said.

The university, as well as the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, many of whom taught at the former college, meant a great deal to Minola, who had left Decatur to attend USF, Merrily added.

“She felt she owned them so much,” Merrily said. “It made all the difference in her life to go to the College of St. Francis.

She became a teacher because of it and she met her husband.”

While at CSF and during a trip to the country with a friend, Merrily said the friend picked up a local farm boy named Jack and gave him a ride home. As they drove, Jack began singing, “When a Gypsy Makes His Violin Cry.” At that moment, Minola decided she wanted to marry Jack, Merrily added, which she did in 1943. Minola’s family knows these details because Minola was a detailed storyteller, said Kerry Reyes of Cary, Minola’s granddaughter, as well as an avid letter-writer with beautiful penmanship.

Minola’s regular correspondence kept the young couple’s relationship when Jack served in the military, Merrily said.

“Every day she would write him a letter and he would write when he could,” Merrily said.

School in Channahon is finding fun ways for students to continue increasing their reading and math skills over the summer with online programs.

This was the first year Three Rivers promoted a summer online reading program for fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders through Scholastic, said sixth-grade teacher Nicole Gubbins.

Students signed up online and logged the minutes read.

As they logged their time, they were granted privileges. If they were “Harry Potter” fans, for instance, they could unlock chat rooms and talk with others with the same interest.

She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, Gregory, Denise, Brian, Nicole, Brandon, Melissa, Jessica, Cindy, Cheryl, Margaret, Matthew, Miles, Meghan, Amy, Ashley, and Shannon. In addition, there are 17 great-grand children and one great-great grandchild.

In the early years Katherine was employed by Illinois Bell Telephone and Telegraph Company in Chicago.

At the age of 25, she married Kenneth Haggard, and together they raised four boys and four girls.

Throughout her years, Katherine was a devoted wife, dear friend, loving mother and grandmother.

In Katherine’s later years she met and fell in love with Bunny Adelmann of Lockport, IL. The Family would like to thank the Adelmann Family for

their love and support. Jerry, Joan, and Jan, we appreciate all that you did for our Mom. Katherine will forever be remembered for her one of a kind compassion, big heart, and playful sense of humor.

There will be a Memorial Celebration in Lockport which will be announced at a later time.

Margaret was full of energy at the age of 90, enjoyed cooking and made the best turkey stuffing. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. Margaret didn’t receive her driver’s license until the age of 48.

He graduated from North Central Bible College and lived out his faith as a compassionate and caring man who truly enjoyed people.

He was an accomplished musician and was gifted with being able to play the clarinet as if he had had years of training although he only had but a few professional lessons.

Gordon was the owner and pilot of a Ercoupe Aircraft spending many hours in the sky. He had a desire for knowledge and read a myriad of books to satisfy his craving for understanding, comprehension and resourcefulness. Gordon M. Smith will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, neighbor and friend.

Parts of toddler’s dismembered body found in Chicago park

CHICAGO – Detectives investigating a lagoon at a Chicago urban park where a toddler’s dismembered feet and hand were discovered waded through cattail reeds and waist-high water Sunday, hoping to find more clues about the young victim’s identity.

A dog with a K-9 unit sniffed though shrubbery, branches and boulders on the edge of Garfield Park on the city’s west side, while investigators felt the muddy lagoon bottom with their hands, looking for other body parts or evidence.

The search began Saturday afternoon after someone reported seeing what turned out to be a left foot floating in the lagoon.

Officers later found a decomposed right foot and a hand about 25 yards away, police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

Jason Ervin, the alderman for the district, said investigators told him the victim was likely 2 to 4 years old.

Investigators haven’t determined the child’s identity, Guglielmi said.

Fox Lake Police Department names new interim chief

FOX LAKE – As the manhunt continues for the three suspects in the shooting death of a suburban Chicago police lieutenant, the village has named a new interim chief and deputy chief to head the grieving department that has been without a permanent chief since last month.

The new interim chief is Lake County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chief Michael Keller and the interim deputy chief is Sgt. Scot Kurek of the sheriff’s department.

Though officials said the interim appointments had nothing to do with the ongoing investigation into the slaying of Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, they said that given all the uncertainty surrounding the investigation into the former chief and the officers’ grief over the death of a beloved colleague, it made sense to bring in new leaders.

Man extradited to Illinois to face charges in attack

CHICAGO – A 31-year-old Indiana man has been extradited to Illinois to face charges he sexually assaulted and stabbed a woman during a suburban Chicago home invasion.

The Arlington Heights Daily Herald reported Londale Madison, of South Bend, faces multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder and aggravated criminal sexual assault.

Prosecutors said the attack happened in Willowbrook on Aug. 29. The 26-year-old woman was treated at an area hospital and released Friday.

Madison was detained in South

Bend on Sept. 1 and Indiana authorities extradited him Friday.

He’s being held at the DuPage County Jail on $5 million bail.

If convicted, he faces a maximum prison sentence of 120 years. His arraignment is set for Sept. 28.

Amazon gets Illinois tax credits despite calls for review

A prolonged state budget crisis that has led to public employee layoffs and the planned closing of government offices statewide hasn’t kept Illinois from extending a package of corporate tax breaks to the nation’s most valuable retailer.

First-term Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner put a hold on the corporate recruitment tool in early June amid a budget impasse that has stretched more than two months into the fiscal year.

But the state Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity says that online retail giant Amazon – with a market value of nearly $250 billion – received the tax credits because of a previous commitment, with the state notifying the company of the award in late May. Amazon said its new Joliet warehouse, its first in Illinois, will create 1,000 full-time jobs.

Elected leaders and business boosters call corporate tax breaks an essential tool to lure new companies and keep existing ones. For example, Sears Holding Corp. and CME Group, the parent company of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade, both threatened to leave Illinois for states with more generous perks before lawmakers cut them both deals in 2011.

WASHINGTON – Already a done deal in Congress, the Iran nuclear agreement gained more momentum Sunday when former Secretary of State Colin Powell and Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the head of the Democratic National Committee, announced their support.

Powell, secretary of state under President George W. Bush, called the agreement “a pretty good deal” that would reduce the threat of Iran gaining a nuclear weapon.

Wasserman Schultz, D-Fla., said the decision to endorse the agreement was the most difficult one she has made in nearly 23 years in elected office.

The Jewish lawmaker wrote in The Miami Herald that while she has concerns about the agreement, the deal “provides the best chance to ensure” security for the U.S., Israel and other allies.

“It’s a sad state of affairs in the city and our country when a 7-year-old boy can’t be free to celebrate a birthday party without being murdered,” Estes said at a news conference Sunday.

‘In God We Trust’ decals on police cars draw complaints

By DAVID WARREN The Associated Press DALLAS – A police department in a Texas Bible Belt community has placed large “In God We Trust” decals on its patrol vehicles in response to recent violence against law enforcement officers, drawing criticism from a watchdog group that said the decals amount to an illegal government endorsement of religion.

The decision by police this month to unveil the phrase in Childress, an agricultural community of some 6,100 people at the southern edge of the Texas Panhandle, follows a similar move by dozens of other police agencies elsewhere in the country.

Police Chief Adrian Garcia said he decided to add the decals in response to recent attacks on law enforcement personnel that have received broad attention, including the Aug. 28 killing of a sheriff’s deputy who was shot 15 times at a Houston-area gas station.

“I think with all the assaults happening on officers across the country ... it’s time we get back to where we once were,” Garcia told the Red River Sun newspaper. He did not respond to an Associated Press request for comment.

The Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund notes that eight officers have been shot and killed in the U.S. in the last month – and four died in the span of 10 days – but shooting deaths of officers from January through September of this year actually were down 13 percent compared to the same period last year.

Other law enforcement agencies have cited different reasons for adding the phrase to their vehicles.

Mark Nichols, the sheriff of Randolph County, Missouri, said he had it added to his department’s fleet in July out of a sense of patriotism.

“It’s our nation’s motto and we want to be patriotic toward our country,” Nichols said.

He said the Missouri Sher-

iff’s Association previously voted to support adding “In God We Trust” to sheriff’s vehicles across the state.

In fact, of the dozens of complaints about the decals lodged in recent months by the Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation, about half were sent to law enforcement agencies in Missouri. Departments in Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Virginia and elsewhere also received complaints from the foundation, which said it will consider suing but acknowledges it can be difficult finding a plaintiff willing to be publicly identified as challenging the use of the phrase.

Gary Parsons, the sheriff in Lee County in Virginia, said his office spent a total of $50 to have the decals added to about 25 vehicles. He said many people feel their belief system is being trampled and that adding the phrase is a way of pushing back.

“It’s not only a symbol of moral values, but also a symbol of patriotism,” he said.

By MARKO DROBNJAKOVIC and SHAWN POGATCHNIK The Associated Press HEGYESHALOM, Hungary – Hungarian police stood by as thousands of migrants hopped cross-border trains Sunday into Austria, taking advantage of Hungary’s surprise decision to stop screening international train travelers for travel visas, a get-tough measure that the country had launched only days before to block their path to asylum in Western Europe.

Fourteen trains from Hungary’s capital of Budapest arrived at the Hegyeshalom station near the Austrian border, disgorging migrants onto the platform. Police didn’t check documents as passengers, mostly migrants, walked a few yards to waiting Austriabound trains, which typically left less than three minutes later. Austrian police said more than 13,000 migrants have passed through their country to Germany over the past two days, far more than expected.

“No check, no problem,” said Reza Wafai, a 19-year-old from Bamiyan, Afghanistan, who hopes to join relatives in Dortmund, Germany. He displayed his just-purchased ticket to Vienna costing $32.50. He was traveling without a passport, carrying only a blackand-white Hungarian asylum seeker ID. EU rules stipulate asylum seekers should seek refuge in their initial EU entry point.

But virtually none of the migrants want to claim asylum in Hungary, where the government is building border defenses and trying to make it increasingly hard for asylum seekers to enter.

Hungarian government spokesman Zoltan Kovacs told The Associated Press that

Hungary had decided to drop visa checks on train ticket customers, a measure introduced only Tuesday, because of the sudden drop in migrant numbers made possible by Germany and Austria’s breakthrough decision to take thousands of asylum seekers stuck in Hungary. Sunday’s free movement for migrants on trains represented an effort “to return to normality, whatever that is,” Kovacs said.

“Last week, the security situation was such that we had to step up in-depth checking,” Kovacs said, referring to Hungary’s effort to require suspected migrants to show valid travel visas when trying to buy train tickets. The rule effectively blocked every migrant from a cross-border train.

“Now, anybody can buy a ticket again, and this is normal. Police typically do not check tickets, and railways do not check visas,” Kovacs said.

But complicating the ever-changing picture, Austria’s railway company told the AP it plans to end its connections to Hegyeshalom on Monday.

LONDON – Britain’s surprising new political star is a rumpled 66-year-old with a set of socialist ideas many thought had faded with the Cold War. Jeremy Corbyn, the runaway favorite in a contest to lead the opposition Labour Party, opposes NATO and nuclear weapons, plans to apologize for the invasion of Iraq and wants to end austerity, heavily tax the rich and nationalize Britain’s railways.

Opponents said the longtime lawmaker is a relic of the past who will drive away moderate voters. But to supporters – many of them young, new to politics and brimming with enthusiasm – his old-fashioned ideas are the future.

“It’s a breath of fresh air,” said 24-year-old Alex Anthony, holding an “I’m on team Jeremy Corbyn” sign outside a candidates’ debate.

“I’m sick and tired of the other candidates ignoring the fact that it wasn’t ordinary people that created the financial crisis.”

If Corbyn tops the leadership ballot when results are announced Saturday, it will mark an abrupt left turn for a Labour Party that has been moving toward the center for decades.

Under Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown, the party shed its commitment to nationalized industry, wooed big business, adopted modern PR methods – and spent 13 years

in office.

But since Labour lost power in 2010 – and was thumped again by Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservatives in May – many in the party have yearned for a return to old-school values.

Patrick Diamond, a former Labour policy adviser who lectures at Queen Mary University of London, said Corbyn’s campaign has tapped into a feeling “that the last Labour government was putting power before principle.”

Asked at a recent public meeting what Labour stood for, Corbyn said it is “a party that should be proud of its socialist principles” and dedicated to the redistribution of wealth.

Blair was a staunch ally of President George W. Bush – too staunch for many in the party, who never have forgiven him for committing British troops to the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

Corbyn has said he’ll apologize “to the British people for taking them into the Iraq war on the basis of deception, and to the Iraqi people for the suffering we have helped cause.”

He also favors scrapping Britain’s nuclear weapons, has called for Britain to leave the NATO military alliance, wants warmer relations with Russia and opposes air strikes against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria.

“If the party was looking for someone who is the antithesis of Tony Blair, they’ve found him,” Diamond said.

Mark Grant began his acceptance speech with a humble, “I don’t deserve this.”

And then he said, “Remember, growing old is mandatory. Growing up is optional.”

A huge Saturday night at the Joliet Catholic Student Activity Center – where Grant, Terry Gannon, Mike Alstott, Liz Tortorello-Nelson and the late Elmer “Tippy” Madarik constitute the second class inducted into the Joliet Catholic Hall of Champions – could not conclude in a livelier manner.

In a sense, you can say Grant hasn’t grown up, which is what endears him to everyone

he meets.

The former eight-year major league pitcher, who these days partners with Dick Enberg as the colorful color commentator for San Diego Padres telecasts, broke the mold. If you missed him Saturday night, plan to attend the Hilltopper Alumni Banquet on Nov 12, where he will conduct a Q-and-A-style session with “Da coach,” Mike Ditka.

First, after Gannon accepted his award, the emcee, JCA athletic director and football coach Dan Sharp, said, “That concludes our program – let’s eat.” It evoked laughter from the audience because everyone knew who was left.

“Oh, I guess we have one more honoree,” Sharp corrected himself.

coach Dan McCarthy was among those on the video talking about Gannon. The topic for University of St. Francis baseball coach Brian Michalak was his cousin, Grant.

It began with Michalak and McCarthy chatting as they prepared to speak. Michalak asked McCarthy when they asked him to do this, and he said about three weeks ago.

“They asked me about 11:30 last night,” Michalak said, indicating it was difficult to find someone. “What am I supposed to say? Maybe I’ll just make something up.”

When Grant accepted his award, he was choked up but still was able to dig deep into his bag of funnies.

For example: “How many of you honorees can say you started a food fight, ran over a teacher in the hallway and were suspended for being drunk? I can.”

And: “It’s amazing what having a good fastball can do compared to a 1.8 GPA.” Grant was the No. 10 overall pick by the San Francisco Giants out of high school in 1981. Gannon – his classmate,

‘Da Coach’ to headline Hilltopper Alumni Banquet SUBMITTED REPORT

JOLIET – Mike Ditka is coming to town.

The Joliet Catholic Academy Alumni Association has announced that the former Bears tight end and coach will headline the Hilltopper Alumni Banquet on Nov. 12 in the JCA Student Activity Center.

Tickets will be in high demand, with 800 available. For the first time, tickets will be sold exclusively online through the JCA website: www.jca-online.org/ditka. Secure payments will be accepted through PayPal.

Cocktails will begin at 5:30 p.m., with tapas-style heavy appetizers being served. From 6 to 7 p.m., Ditka will be available for a private meeting with major sponsors. The program will begin at 7 p.m. and run until 8 p.m. Drinks will continue to be sold after the program.

Tickets will be sold as follows: $500 for a table of 10, $50 for individual table seating and $40 for general admission.

The JCA/Ditka Web page contains a link to the seating arrangement, as well. Table seating is limited to the first 320

who sign up. JCA, JCHS and SFA graduates as well as the general public are welcome.

JCHS graduate Mark Grant, a former major league pitcher and the current color commentary analyst for the San Diego Padres, will emcee the event. Grant will provide comedic relief as he interviews Ditka in a Q-and-A style program.

“Da Coach” led the 1985 Bears to a Super Bowl XX victory. He was the only person to participate in both of the last two Bears’ championships, as a player in 1963 and as coach

in 1985.

Well-known today as a TV and radio commentator and personality, Ditka is a member of both the College and Pro Football Hall of Fames. He was the 1961 NFL Rookie of the year, a five-time Pro Bowl Yselection and five-time All-Pro tight end with the Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, and Dallas Cowboys. Sure-handed and tenacious running with the ball, he led the transformation of the tight end position into today’s modern offensive threat.

As an NFL coach, he was twice named both the AP

and UPI NFL Coach of the Year (1985 and 1988). He also coached the New Orleans Saints for three years.

Ditka is no stranger to speaking in the Joliet area. He twice has headlined the University of St. Francis’ “Brown and Gold Night” (1982, 2007).

He joins the notable speakers who headlined the Hilltopper Banquet over the last several years, including Eddie Olczyk and Paul Azinger.

“I was nice to look over my right shoulder and see Terry at short and Scott Markley in center field,” Grant said. “Terry, I’m sorry you didn’t get a lot of work, but it was nice to see you out there.”

From another story: “I was called into the dean’s office ... shocker.”

And: “It said 1981 on my diploma, which is the an amazing thing in itself.”

He concluded with a serious thought, “You show people what it’s like to be a Hillman or an Angel by the way you treat people.”

Alstott, who coaches high school football in Florida, was unable to attend. He made six Pro Bowls with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and played with the Super Bowl XXXVII winner. His brother, Mark, accepted his award, and he and others on the video spoke of Mike’s unparalleled work ethic and the work he does for charitable causes in the Tampa Bay area.

Sports, ESPN and The Golf Channel. He was working The Deutsche Bank PGA tournament in Boston over the weekend. After two months of asking, he finally got off one day to attend the banquet.

He joked that if he wasn’t on The Golf Channel’s coverage at noon Sunday, it probably means he’s out of a job. Not to worry. He was on TV sounding as good as ever, although he had to be exhausted.

Vince Cornelius, Gannon’s high school teammate, said that anytime the greatest shooter in Joliet history is debated, it’s always Gannon and Roger Powell Sr. 1-2, in either order.

Mike Gillespie, Gannon’s coach at Joliet Catholic, was

on the video with this: “I remember the night Terry scored 44 points and missed one shot. He had those great nights. The great night for me was the one and only time I got to kick Terry out of practice for not giving his best.”

Gannon said being at the banquet was the most important thing for him to do Saturday night. He said Joliet Catholic “gave me the confidence to be part of something that is bigger than yourself.”

Once at North Carolina State, Michael Jordan was on fire for North Carolina.

Valvano said, “Can’t anybody stop this guy?” Gannon was next to him on the bench and offered. Valvano said, “That’s Michael Jordan, not Hamilton Jordan.”

After Tortorello-Nelson’s sister, Laura, and former volleyball teammates Gretchen Beltzhoover-Troha and Mary Penosky, talked of her in glowing terms, Tortorello-Nelson said, “That’s tough to listen to about yourself. It’s great, though.

“You know, all the other honorees have a Wikipedia page. I don’t. I’m the only one without one. But that’s OK.” Tortorello-Nelson led St. Francis Academy to two straight state appearances, including a fourth-place finish in 1986. She then led Wisconsin to the Big Ten championship and the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

She coached at Loyola for 11 years and now is the athletic director at Chicago Latin.

“It’s great to win,” she said. “But that’s not going to happen all the time. Kids who walk in the door have to see the support system like you have [at JCA].”

Madarik, after returning from serving in World War II, became the first NFL player from Joliet Catholic. As was common in those days, he did it all for the Detroit Lions and Washington Redskins. Terry Ziesmer, his nephew, accepted his award and told stories about some of his noteworthy plays, such as booming a punt 50 yards and downing it himself and catching a deflected pass he threw and taking it in for a touchdown.

Offensively, Isom said the biggest disappointment was the hitting with runners in scoring position with two outs.

“We hit about .220 with runners in scoring position and two outs,” he said. “That was a major frustration. We also need to work on finding that big RBI bat in the middle of the lineup.”

Isom and general manager Chris Franklin also talked highly of some late-season acquisitions who have helped the team.

“Carter Bell, Marc Flores

and Jeremy Nowak have done a great job in the limited time they have been here,” Isom said.

“Bell is an infielder, but has done a great job playing center field. With the addition of those three, the players we have coming back and competing for jobs next season, we are not that far away. Pitching and defense is baseball, and we will have to find the pitching – that is concern No. 1.”

Franklin likes what was been happening, not only on the field but also with the Slammers’ organization during the 2015 season.

“I like our core of players,”

he said. “When you really look at it, those core players are as good as anyone in the league.

We had three All-Stars. Our additions also have worked out well and contributed.

“We will have better attendance this year than last year, and that is with the terrible weather we had in June. The community relations that this team has been involved in is the best since I’ve been here.

This is a great group of players who contribute to the community and we are proud of that.”

The issue of turf at Silver Cross Field is a mixed bag.

“It’s not the end-all, be-all,” Franklin said. “I’m a baseball purist and love to play on grass. However, turf would allow us to host so many more events than we do. We are happy to host the IHSA state baseball weekend in spring. We have a great relationship with

JOLIET – It was Fan Appreciation Night for the Joliet Slammers at Silver Cross Field during Sunday’s season finale.

With the Slammers’ 4-3 victory in 12 innings to the Rockford Aviators before 3,240 fans, they ended the season 42-54. It is a record that on paper looks bad but leaves encouraging signs for 2016.

“In this league, 48-50 wins will get you in the playoffs,” Slammers manager Jeff Isom said.

“We were close, and I know everyone can go back and look at games they should have won. But with us this year, it was the little things. Attention to detail, as I like to call it. We let so many games slip away, a missed hit in a crucial situation, an error at time when that can’t happen.”

Asked about the biggest concern from this season going into 2016, Isom was quick to answer: starting pitching.

“Starting pitching is the No. 1 item that we must address during the offseason,” he said.

“We have to find five or six starters that can go more than five innings. When we have the lead after five, we are a very good team.”

The Slammers are at the bottom of the league in overall pitching, but the bullpen was a positive.

“Our bullpen ERA is in the 2.20 range, and they have done an outstanding job,” Isom said “But when the starters can’t go into the sixth, seventh or eighth inning, that takes a toll over the season on your bullpen.

“The game has changed as far as specialty pitchers, but we still need starters who can go longer and give us a chance.”

University of Saint Francis graduate Adam Panayotovich, who had a stint during July with the Slammers, impressed Isom.

“We will give Adam a chance to compete for a job next season,” he said. “He can pitch in this league. Being a senior this past season, he had to start pitching in February.

Attendance is an issue with any baseball team, and the Slammers are no exception.

“We have been season ticket holders since 2004,” Len Suhadolc said. “I’m a baseball fan, this is fun, and I have a great time watching the Slammers and coming to Silver Cross.”

“I come for the people,” said Len’s wife, Noreen. “We have met so many good friends over the years here at the park. This is a great entertainment value, the food is the best it has ever been, and the owners really care, not only about the season ticket holders but all of the fans.”

When asked about the value of putting a winning team on the field, Len said, “Sure, winning is great, and we have been a part of a championship here.

But I’m a Cubs fan, so I know what it is like. I don’t understand why more people don’t come out and watch baseball here.”

Jim Baran of Joliet has brought his kids to the games for years.

“This is a great place, and I don’t get why we, the fans, don’t support this team and stadium. It’s a great value, it’s close and always a great time.”

Andrew and Kelly Currieri, who live in Joliet, were seated behind home plate for the last game and were impressed.

“This is our first game – we have never been here, and this is great,” they said. “We have always thought about coming, just never made it. This is awesome. We should have done it sooner and we will be back more next year.”

The same sentiments were expressed by the Felbinger family of Bolingbrook.

“This is our second game this season,” said Steve Felbinger, who was with his wife, Shelly, daughter Emily and son Nick. “It’s always a fun time, but sometimes we just never think about it. It’s not that we don’t know about it.”

The 2015 season ended with a win, and the Slammers and their fans are hoping for a much better 2016.

Shannon Doran and Lauren Stefanski each were named to the all-tournament team. Doran totaled 88 assists, 11 digs, nine kills and five aces. Stefanski had 44 kills, 20 digs, 12 blocks and three aces.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – It probably is too late for the White Sox, but they are back on a hot streak.

Adam Eaton homered and scored three times, and the Sox beat the Kansas City Royals, 7-5, on Sunday for their fourth straight win.

“Yeah, it’s good to win in general, but Kansas City’s a high-quality baseball team,” Eaton said. “It’s good to take three from a very, very good team.”

The Sox had lost their first six games at Kauffman Stadium before sweeping the Royals.

“It shows kind of our inconsistency this year,” Eaton said. “This last month of the season, we’ve got to empty whatever’s left in the tank, and I hope this three-game series can kind of foresee what we can do for the rest of the month.”

Bryant hits long homer to help Cubs in sweep over Arizona The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – It’s just not Kris Bryant’s style to watch his home runs – even when he’s launching a rocket nearly 500 feet off a gigantic video board.

Bryant’s hit a huge home run and tied a club rookie record for RBIs, Miguel Montero added a grand slam, and the Cubs beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 6-4, to complete a three-game sweep Sunday.

Bryant’s drive leading off the fifth against Rubby De La Rosa (127) traveled an estimated 495 feet.

“I knew I hit it good,” he said.

“No reason to watch.”

“It’s just never been part of my game,” he said. “I don’t believe in showing up your opponent.”

The home run also gave Bryant 86 RBIs, tying a club rookie mark held by Hall of Famer Billy Williams (1961) and Geovany Soto (2008), and wiped out a 1-0 deficit.

To make room for the two on the 53-man roster, the Bears cut safety Sherrod Martin and waived offensive tackle Jordan Mills.

Mills had been a two-year starter for the Bears at right tackle. The fifth-round pick in 2013 won the job in training camp that summer and played

every snap until he injured his foot before to the season finale against Green Bay. He had surgery that offseason and battled injuries last season, as well.

This offseason, Mills had the first shot to win the right tackle job outright, but after the preseason opener he started rotating reps with 2014 seventh-rounder Charles Leno.

“Thanks Chicago for the memories and all that you’ve done for me. #BearDown,” Mills tweeted.

Omameh started all 16 games for the Bucs at right guard last season but lost his job to rookie Ali Marpet

this preseason. He worked at tackle this summer but was cut on Saturday. He’s a 6-foot-4, 305-pounder who played college ball at Michigan and signed with the Bucs in 2013 but did not play that season.

The addition of Omameh and release of Mills adds to the possibility of Kyle Long starting at right tackle against the Packers on Sunday. Long worked there in practice, and Omameh gives the Bears two guards with starting experience, along with Vladimir Ducasse.

Jones-Quartey, a 5-11, 215-pound defensive back out

of Findlay, signed with the Cardinals as an undrafted rookie. He played safety for Arizona this preseason and led the team with 14 tackles while adding an interception and a fumble recovery.

Martin is a sixth-year NFL veteran who did return an interception for a touchdown in the preseason finale, but the Bears would prefer to go with the younger Jones-Quartey as a fourth safety.

As for the players the Bears waived on Sunday, only one – David Bass – was claimed.

The Titans signed him to play outside linebacker in their 3-4 defense.

Stenson takes lead in Deutsche Bank’s third round The ASSOCIATED PRESS NORTON, Mass. – Henrik Stenson is starting to hit his stride at a good time.

Coming off a runner-up finish in the opening FedEx Cup playoff event last week, Stenson erased a five-shot deficit in seven holes Sunday and played bogey-free for a 6-under 65 at the Deutsche Bank Championship. His only birdie on the back nine was a two-putt on the par-5 18th that gave him a one-shot lead over Rickie Fowler.

Stenson was an afterthought at the majors this year, where he finished at least 10 shots behind the leaders in all four of them. Picking up a $10 million bonus from the FedEx Cup wouldn’t be a bad consolation, and the Swede suddenly is trending in that direction.

She was discussing diet, but it could also apply at the bridge table. On every round of the bidding, you have the choice to take action or to pass.

Sometimes, you will hope your choice works well; but more often, you should be confident it is the best action at that moment.

In this deal, what do you think of the various actions and inactions?

The first round of the auction was predictable. North would have liked to make a takeout double to bring hearts into the picture, but that would have risked partner’s advancing in diamonds and reaching a bad fit at a high level.

Then, over three clubs, East should have bid three spades; in a competitive auction, get to the nine-trick level with a nine-card fit. If East had done that, South would have made a card-showing double, which North would have removed to four hearts, reaching their best contract by the back door.

When East passed, South made the sensible choice of three hearts.

He knew game values were possible, he had already passed, and he had some club support if North did not like hearts.

Finally, North should have bid four hearts. It was quite likely that South had the club ace, and if he did, four hearts had to have play.

At the table, East won the first trick with his spade queen and shifted to the diamond jack.

South won with his ace, drew two rounds of trumps, and turned to clubs to end with 10 tricks.

• Rinse fruits and vegetables thoroughly.

• Use a cutting board that is smooth, hard and nonporous. Clean it with soap and hot water before and after each use.

If you do get food poisoning, drink plenty of fluids, even if you have trouble keeping them down.

This is important because large amounts of fluids are lost through vomiting and diarrhea.

Food poisoning is not something you want to repeat if you can avoid it.

Fortunately, there are many things you can do to reduce your risk.

Food poisoning commonly occurs when food or water is contaminated during improper cooking, handling or storage. The most common contaminants are bacteria, such as salmonella, Campylobacter and E. coli.

Most incidents can be prevented by selecting, handling and preparing food properly.

First, select safe foods: • Buy foods before their expiration date.

• Make certain that cans of food are not dented or bulging. A bulging can could indicate that the food inside is contaminated by a type of bacteria that produces gas.

• Make sure jars of food are sealed tightly.

• Avoid foods that contain raw eggs.

Then, store foods properly: • Refrigerate or freeze perishables immediately.

• Keep your refrigerator and freezer at proper temperatures. That’s 40 degrees Fahrenheit for the fridge and 0 degrees Fahrenheit for the freezer.

• Store items according to their labeled instructions.

• Thaw food in the refrigerator or microwave. Leaving food to thaw at room temperature gives bacteria a chance to grow.
