Coal City bus drivers union votes to ratify school contract agreement

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com COAL CITY – Bus drivers with Teamsters Local 179 and Illinois Central School Bus ratified a union contract Tuesday.

The bus drivers union, which has drivers for Coal

City schools, approved a contract with Illinois Central School Bus, with 75 percent of the members present at Tuesday’s meeting voting yes.

“We’ve never had a problem,” said Tom Flynn, Teamsters Local 179 president, of the contract negotiations.

He said the contract re-

ceived overwhelming support from union members.

Matt Finn, contract manager for the Illinois Central School Bus Coal City location, said the relationship between the union and his company has been amicable.

“There was no animosity,” Finn said.

JOLIET – Joliet Township High School District 204 will conduct placement testing for current eighth-grade private school students who reside within the district’s boundaries, along with makeup testing for public school eighth-graders who did not take the test at their school on the designated testing day.

Police make an arrest at Joliet apartment site THE HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – Several police officers, one carrying a rifle and one with a shield, went into a Joliet apartment building Tuesday morning to arrest a man.

Police later said the shield and rifle were precautionary.

A man eventually was arrested without incident for trespassing because he was not wanted in the building at Oneida and Madison streets, which is near Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, police said.

MINOOKA – Two people were charged and a third was injured in an early morning crash Tuesday near Minooka that blocked traffic for hours on Interstate 80.

About 5:21 a.m. Tuesday at milepost 119, the driver of a semitrailer was resting while parked on the right shoulder when the driver of a three-axle box truck traveling east fell asleep and drove into the semitrailer, according to Illinois State Police District 5 Master Sgt. Wilfredo Rivera.

The semitrailer was car-

rying milk products, which spilled onto the interstate, Rivera said. The box truck flipped on its side, blocking multiple lanes.

All lanes were closed for several hours, according to Rivera, and traffic was redirected to the left shoulder. Partial lane closures continued until 9:05 a.m.

The driver of the semitrailer was charged with improper parking, Rivera said, and the driver of the box truck was charged with driving while fatigued and improper lane use.

The semitrailer’s co-driver was transported to a nearby hospital for minor injuries.

CHANNAHON – The Channahon School District 17 board learned Monday the district has “healthy fund balances” when accountant Scott Duenser, of Klein Hall CPAs, gave the board its 2014-15 audit report.

The district is on target to pay off the remainder of its bond debt in the near future.

The bonds were used to finance Channahon Junior High School.

Becoming debt free, Duenser said, “is great for you and uncommon for a district. ... It’s great for all involved.”

The board also approved adding a project to the construction of the new lunch room at N.B. Galloway Elementary School planned for next year.

According to Superintendent Nick Henkle, the lunch room will take up more than 50 percent of the asphalt play area at the south side of the school.

The site is heavily used by students at recess, according to Galloway Principal Mary Kelly, who said 115 to 120 children are out on the area at any given time.

Architectural renderings for the site proposed an extension of additional asphalt along the grassy area about 10 feet from the wall of the school, but some board members felt the grass should remain.

The board suggested new renderings of added asphalt a little to the south of what was proposed, with a pathway to the playground. Currently, that pathway is crushed limestone, which board member Dee Foreman said is difficult to traverse with a wheelchair.

With the remaining playground asphalt in poor shape, the board approved adding the project of repairing the existing surface drive and expanding the play area to the bids it will seek for the lunch room addition in mid-October. The extra costs are estimated at $100,000.

The board also approved hiring Dawn McMillin as a homebound tutor at $31.02 an hour; Kelly Davis as cafeteria server at $9 an hour; and Demitra Gobert as substitute cafeteria worker at $8.50 an hour. Extra duty was approved for Kiley Sommers as assistant sponsor for Beta Club at a stipend of $1,026, and for Dan Nyalka as sixth-grade

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHESTER – Drew Peterson’s murder-for-hire trial in southern Illinois has been postponed until early next year.

The former Bolingbrook police officer is charged with soliciting an inmate to kill Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow, who prosecuted the 2012 case in which Peterson was sentenced to 38 years in prison for the bathtub drowning death of ex-wife

Kathleen Savio.

A Randolph County judge on Tuesday granted a request for more time by Peterson’s court-appointed attorney. A trial set to begin in November is now scheduled to start Feb. 29.

The ex-Bolingbrook sergeant is challenging wiretap evidence he said was improperly obtained, with a Will County judge first meeting with a jailhouse informant before considering the request to secretly record Peterson.

Born: Sept. 14, 1923; in Jalapa Mexico Died: Sept. 25, 2015; in Jacksonville, IL Maria Alicia (Sanchez) Luckhart, 92, of New Lenox, died at 10:45 a.m. on Friday, September 25, 2015, at Prairie Village Healthcare Center in Jacksonville, IL. Alicia was born September 14, 1923, in Jalapa, Mexico, the daughter of Vicente and Dinah Levy Sanchez. She married Karl E. Luckhart in July 1947 in Chicago; he preceded her in death in January 1989.

Alicia was born and raised in Mexico and moved to Chicago, where she met her husband at the age of 23. They later moved to New Lenox in 1960, where she lived until 2013.

Alicia received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the College of St. Francis in Joliet. She was a nurse for over 40 years and worked at Silver Cross Hospital and Argonne National Lab for much of her career.

After retirement, she continued working part-time as a nurse until the age of 80. She was very proud of becoming a registered nurse after being a stay at home mom for 19 years. Alicia enjoyed sewing, painting, and needlepoint. She was very involved serving her church, St. Jude’s of New Lenox, for the last 25 years of her life.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Leonardo Sanchez; and two sisters, Dinah Sanchez and Olga Alvarez, all of Mexico.

Alicia is survived by one son, Karl Luckhart (wife, Joan Zaremski) of Birdsboro, PA; three daughters, Wendie (husband, Juan) Medina of Chatham, Krystal (husband, James) Rheinwald of Santa Monica, CA, and Bonnie (husband, Regino) Hernandez of New Lenox; eight grandchildren, Nicholas, Darrin, Danielle, Alexis, Zachary, Rachel,

Michael-Karl, and Eugene; four great-grandchildren, Jackson, Ana, Arlo, and Marco; one sister-in-law, Kathy Luckhart (husband, Peter) Yablonski of Lancaster, CA; and one sister, Carmela Rey (husband, Raphael Valquez) and numerous dear nieces and nephews in Mexico.

Rev. Howard M. Walker, passed away at Lakewood Nursing Center, Sunday, September 27, 2015. Age 88 years.

Survived by his daughter, Marie Clegg of Cornelius, NC; and his son, Randall Walker of Fairfield, IA. Two granddaughters, Jacqueline Clegg and Brianne (Michael) Redden. A great-granddaughter, Kaitlyn Marie Clegg.

Preceded in death by his wife, Lois M. Walker (nee Hahn) (2013); his parents, George and Wilhelmina Walker; and a infant sister, Barbara Walker.

Howard was born January 22, 1927, in Amsterdam, New York.

He graduated from Gettysburg College in 1947 with his Bachelors in Psychology being the 1st of 2 to graduate with the degree from the college. He furthered his educa-

tion at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Gettysburg graduating in 1950 with his bachelors of Divinity Education. Howard’s first church call was to St. Paul Lutheran Church in Narrowsburg, N.Y., followed by Third Lutheran Church in Rhinebeck, N.Y., Atonement Lutheran Church in Oneonta, N.Y., Zion Lutheran Church in Syracuse, N.Y., Freeburg Lutheran Charge in Freeburg, P.A. and First Lutheran Church in Joliet from 1974 until his retirement in 1998.

Howard married the former Lois M. Hahn on June 2, 1949, in Schenectady, N.Y. His hobbies included music, reading, photography and model railroading. Howard was a 50 year member and 16 year Board of Director member, serving also as the National Director of the National Railway Historical Society. Member of the National Model Railroad Association since high school. Founder of the Central Pennsylvania Railway Society in Lewisburg, P.A., and member of the Blackhawk chapter since 1974 serving several years as President.

Howard contributed over 450 volumes to the Railroad Museum and Library at East Tennessee State University.

Born December 9, 1936, in Streator, IL and a longtime Joliet resident. Graduate of St. Patrick’s Catholic School and Joliet Catholic High School. Veteran of the US Army in Korea and on the Pistol Team in HI. He married Kathleen McCauley in 1958. Retired after 32 years from the post office as a letter carrier. A natural song and dance man. On his 5th Birthday he performed “Swanee River” during Pearl Harbor. He played accordion, dabbled in banjo and ukulele and could “rock the hell” out of a sweet potato. He loved fishing, golfing and camping. A die hard Chicago Bears season ticket holder and “Master of Tailgate Chef”, as evidence by John Maddens glowing telestrator ‘thumbs up’ of his “Eggs ala Zimm” and Rumaki.

He traveled extensively, running into at least one person from Joliet, where ever he went, frequently knowing their addresses, thanks to his attention to detail during his tenure with the post office. “He was a perennial power-hitter for the Speedboys A.C” ... he never did learn to slide.

Funeral services will be held from the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home 2320 Black Road, on Friday, October 2, 2015, at 10:30 a.m., to St. Mary Nativity for a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00 a.m.

Obama: Fight against Islamic State group ‘not an easy task’

By ZEINA KARAM The Associated Press UNITED NATIONS – President Barack Obama on Tuesday pledged all possible tools – military, intelligence and economic – to defeat the Islamic State group, but acknowledged the extremist group has taken root in Syria and Iraq, is resilient and continues to expand.

Obama hosted a U.N. gathering of world leaders working to expand the battle against terrorism, a day after he and the leaders of Russia, China and Iran addressed the General Assembly during its 70th anniversary. The fight against terrorism, particularly in Syria, has seized the attention of top officials, but there has been no overall agreement on how to end the conflict there.

“I have repeatedly said that our approach will take time. This is not an easy task,”

Obama cautioned, while adding that he was “ultimately optimistic” the brutal organization would be defeated because it has nothing to offer but suffering and death.

“This is a long-term campaign – not only against this particular network, but against its ideology,” he said.

The meeting also heard from the Iraqi leader, who sought more help against IS in his country, and learned from Obama that three more countries – Nigeria, Tunisia and Malaysia – were added to the coalition fighting the group.

In other events at the annual gathering of world leaders: • Obama held talks with Cuban President Raul Castro, the second time the leaders of the once-estranged nations have met this year.

• The European Union’s top diplomat emerged from a high-level meeting on Syria’s

humanitarian crisis to tell reporters that she sees possible “political space for new initiatives in the coming weeks,” with no details.

JJC announces two new trustees

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The two new Joliet Junior College Board of Trustees members will be Patricia Deiters and Alicia Morales.

The two will fill positions vacated by former chairwoman Tina Markley and trustee Barb Adams, both of whom resigned unexpectedly at an August workshop meeting.

Their appointments will not be official until the Oct. 6 board meeting, when trustees are expected to consider them as new members.

“Both of them were enthusiastic about being a trustee,” Board Chairman Robert Wunderlich said.

He said Deiters and Morales interviewed well.

Trustees sought to have diversity on the board – and both candidates are women, and Morales is Latino, he said.

The seats for Deiters, Morales and third new trustee Daniel O’Connell, who was appointed in September, will be up for election in 2017, Wunderlich said. The seat for another trustee, Michael O’Connell, also will be up for election the same year. He plans not to run again.

Michael O’Connell, who was appointed to the board in 2009 to replace the late Dick Dystrup, said he plans not to run so he can spend more time with his family.

He said his grandchildren have grown older and become more active since he joined the board and he wants to

spend more time with them.

New trustees

Deiters, a JJC alumna, is a producer for McNulty Wealth Management Group in Mokena. She also has worked for the village of Monee as a park programs coordinator.

She stated in her letter of intent to JJC that the school is a “fantastic learning institution” for students starting their college career.

“Given the financial constraints that many families are still feeling from the 2008 market crash, [community colleges] will play an ever larger part in starting many students’ academic careers,” she wrote.

Revenue sources scrutinized at Will County budget workshop

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Ahead of budget talks later this month, a handful of Will County Board members took advantage of Tuesday’s budget workshop by going line-by-line through some of the county’s biggest revenue sources and how they stack up to previous years.

Much of the conversation centered around Budget Director ReShawn Howard’s process of building a $482 million budget and calculating estimated revenues for future years.

“The assumptions are based on actual receipts looking at prior year history, looking at trend patterns. We take a conservative approach as we have in prior years in estimating revenue so that we don’t have a shortfall in our revenue,” Howard said.

The budget proposed earlier this month by County Executive Larry Walsh Sr.’s office does not rely on raising taxes and accounts for increased health insurance costs, contractual pay raises and a need

The recommended budget includes $194 million in the corporate fund – the county’s main operating fund – and about $288 million in the special revenue funds.

Howard said the property tax levy – one of the county’s key revenue sources – stands at $65.8 million, the same as last year, not accounting for an increase to the consumer price index or new property.

Those who appeared most interested included relatively new board member Darren Bennefield, R-Aurora, who was appointed late last year to

the board.

The title of one fund sparked laughter.

“I just have a question about a title of a fund. The State’s Attorney’s Money Laundering Fund? What exactly is that?” Bennefield said, laughing. “I’m just looking at it. ... What exactly is that?”

Assistant State’s Attorney Mary Tatroe, head of the civil division of the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, explained.

“Money laundering dollars comes from mostly drug cases; but they can be other cases where, through criminal activity, money is laundered,” she said. “And then it is seized and forfeited because you don’t want the criminal to benefit from their crimes.

So those are seized funds from criminal cases.”

Tatroe said the office’s drug forfeiture fund works the same way.

“Maybe we’ve seized cash.

Maybe we’ve seized cars, homes or computers. Those are sold and [the fund balance] is the assets, the money that we derived,” she said.

More not possible when state struggling with less SPRINGFIELD – A reporter once asked the 20th century’s most influential labor leader, John L. Lewis, what does organized labor want?

His response: “More.”

It’s a great rejoinder, but it’s a lousy premise to go into all negotiations Sometimes there isn’t “more” to give.

For example, Illinois is the fiscal basket case of the nation.

We have racked up more than $111 billion in pension debt, spending is outpacing revenues, basic state services are being cut, and we’ve gone 13 weeks without a budget.

So what does state government’s largest union want?

More.

Lots more.

Even though their contract with the state expired July 1, they want pay hikes.

Pardon me, but vendors to the state’s veteran’s homes say they are going to stop delivering food, because they aren’t getting paid.

The state lacks a budget and can’t pay hospital bills for its employees on time.

Landlords are threatening state offices with eviction for unpaid rent.

And Secretary of State Jesse White publicly stated recently he’s concerned about electricity being cut off at the Capitol because the power bill hasn’t been paid.

Now that’s broke.

And yet, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees filed a lawsuit in St. Clair County Circuit Court seeking “step pay raises” and automatic promotions for employees.

By the way, state workers traditionally have received step increases, automatic promotions and across-theboard raises.

Most folks in the private sector don’t receive “automatic” promotions.

Their promotions are earned not given out based on seniority.

And for most folks working in the private sector, pay increases are based on individual performance – not how long you’ve held onto a particular job and received “satisfactory” reviews.

Union bigwigs want the sacrifice to be borne by taxpayers – not their organizations.

Many Illinois taxpayers are simply tapped out. They have seen a steady exodus of jobs and neighbors to more-prosperous states.

And yet, union chiefs want your taxes to pay for benefits most of us can never hope to receive.

Worse yet, union bosses are imperiling the very state their members are supposed to serve by demanding more while many taxpayers are making do with less.

To the Editor: A few months ago, I wrote about a sanction place. There is also a knowledge place. This place is our three Crest Hill, Lockport and Romeoville White Oak libraries. They are a quiet place, but vibrant with integrity.

Many residents bring in their discarded books.

They are placed in the Book Nook, Amazon and sold. The “Friends of the Library” help with the sale of these books. All monies collected go back to the three libraries for whatever is needed. As of the current month, an approximate amount collected is $10,000. The dedication of these F.O.L. members is outstanding. They all connect as a team with all three library staff.

The knowledge place title was commented by Scott, director of the three White Oak libraries.

He advised the increase of check-out books was

The “book lovers day” was a big success. Elizabeth Berg, in person, gave a talk on her historical fiction. There was a question-and-answer session. The room at our Romeoville Library was filled to capacity. It was very informative. I truly enjoyed this knowledgeable day.

Our three libraries continually promote awareness of history and current events. Literacy is important. The promotion of reading books is “forefront” at all times. Their purpose is to put a book in the hand of all children and adults. Our three White Oak libraries are a perfect example of the “joy” in the pursuit of reading. They are proud to be a “hub” for anyone to visit and learn.

Plainfield Central gets past Plainfield East

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Halfway through the Southwest Prairie Conference girls volleyball season, Plainfield Central holds the top spot with a 7-0 record.

But all that tells Wildcats coach Erik Vogt is that his squad will have to overcome more tough challenges like the one they faced Tuesday at Plainfield East.

The Bengals won the opening set and rallied from a big deficit to grab a late lead in the middle game before the Wildcats claimed a 22-25, 25-23, 2522 victory.

“We started off the season a little shaky, but our upper-

classmen have really stepped up in the past couple weeks,” Vogt said. “The girls really want to try to do what they did last year and have the drive and know how hard the road is. They know that our conference is extremely strong and well-rounded. It’s going to come down to who survives the fist fight.

“We’ve done more this year in terms of roster changes than I ever have in this program.

It’s nice to see that everybody is able step up. Tonight we lost the first set running a 5-1 with two middles in, and then we win the next two running a 5-1 with our setter playing middle. It’s nice to have versatility, and I think it will help us a lot in the playoffs.”

The Wildcats (16-6, 7-0) showed a lot of character against the Bengals (12-6-1, 4-3), who looked like they might follow up on their big win over rival Plainfield North. East trailed, 17-8, in the second set but stormed back to grab a 23-22 lead before Central rallied late.

In the finale, the Wildcats started to pull away and eventually built a 19-11 lead. The Bengals twice closed the gap to two points before Central finally wrapped things up.

“Our level of play has been on the up, and I told the girls that this is their standard, this is how they should be playing in every game,” East coach Emily Tonon said. “And you saw it, especially when we

came back tonight. But it’s the little mistakes and when they stop talking and when that happens, we get down a few. We bounced back, but it wasn’t fast enough.

“Our girls work well as a team and have good chemistry. You can put different people in different spots and they figure it out. Communication is a big key to this game and when we’re on, we’re on. Our defense has been incredible, especially when we get a little help from the net. We need to work hard at practice and have them keep moving their feet.”

East led, 10-8, in the third set after a kill by MacKenzi Welsh (eight kills, five blocks, 16 digs, 15 assists) but Central

moved in front for good after a 4-0 run. After the Bengals got a point back, the Wildcats went on a 7-0 spurt, which featured an ace by Kathleen Antos and two blocks and a kill from Ashley Shook (26 assists, five kills, 12 digs) to grab a 19-11 lead.

The Wildcats were still up, 23-17, after a kill by Grace Brock, but the Bengals pulled to within 23-21 on a kill by Sara Mokrzycka (four kills, two blocks). After an exchange of kills by Central’s Claire Hotchkin (eight kills, seven digs, two blocks) and East’s Makenzie Duggan, Kory Beard got a block to end things.

Blakney Rydberg skating to bigger, better things has 19 digs for Bengals FIGURE SKATING

ast year, Paige Rydberg had an impressive figure skating resume.

Even though she had made three-consecutive trips to nationals, she had one huge goal on her mind.

This year, the Romeoville sophomore made her dream a reality.

She made Team USA in July in the Junior Ladies division.

“This has been a long-term goal for me and for Paige to make Team USA,” said Mary Antensteiner, coach and founder of MA figure skating academy. “She’s accomplished it. It’s a dream come true for her. When I showed her the letter, she was so excited that she cried.

It meant a lot to her. It was a pivotal point in her career to get that because it takes you to that next level that she’s been aspiring to get to.”

Making Team USA wasn’t easy, however.

To even be considered, Rydberg had the daunting task of making the International Selection Pool. After having one bad skate at the Nationals last year, which gave her an eighth-place finish in Juniors, Rydberg had to fight to make the list again.

“It was hard for me to go from second to eighth, and knowing that it was just the long program that brought me down,” Rydberg said.

Immediately afterward, Rydberg returned to Darien Sportsplex – her training rink – to go back to her hard regimen. The hard work got her back on the ISP list.

Winning the Broadmoor Open in Colorado in June and doing well at the ISP camp immediately after Broadmoor in Colorado helped her get noticed for Team USA. In September, Rydberg competed in her first Junior Grand Prix competition and placed fifth out of more than 30 girls who represented countries around the world.

Paige Rydberg made Team USA in July in the Junior Ladies Division. internationally. The only thing that seemed a little different to the experienced skater was that she didn’t know how to tell everyone good luck before the skate because of the language barrier.

Rydberg will represent the U.S. again in October when she competes in the Junior Grand Prix in Croatia. It will be the first time she competes overseas, something she is really excited for and something

that is a huge achievement.

Only two girls are representing the United States at the competition, and Rydberg is one of them.

“This year has been really incredible,” Antensteiner said. “She’s been doing fantastic. To be on Team USA and to get two Junior Grand Prix assignments in her first season on Team USA is a big accomplishment. We’re on to big things.”

Making Team USA has been the highlight of her career to date, but she is still dedicated to further improving her craft so that she can continue on this path.

Rydberg said she has a few areas that she needs to improve on. Last year, she nailed all of her triple jumps and improved on other parts of her craft.

We want to stay undefeated and hopefully come out with the title.

“Our passing and our defense has really improved.

I think we’re starting to run down more balls and be more confident with our hitting. In the beginning of the season we weren’t as aggressive as we should have been, but now we’re finally up to where we should be.”

In the middle set, Central grabbed a 10-3 lead and extended it to 17-8 at one point.

But East fought back, going on an 8-1 run to close to within 19-16. It forced a tie at 21 with a Duggan kill. After a Welsh kill gave East a 23-22 lead, Central got a kill from Hotchkin and then two more from Erin Eulitz (13 kills, three blocks, 19 digs) to force a third set.

Other Bengals leaders were Malia Gamen (five kills, 13 digs), Jessica Wernig (five kills), Jade Blakney (19 digs) and Paris Pinkney (10 digs).

“We’re really excited,” Brock said. “We’re trying to be first in conference by ourselves because last year we tied for first. This match showed us how much we have to work and stay strong together and play as a team. At first we were shaky, but we’ve gotten stronger from that and that’s made us closer. We’re playing with a lot more confidence now.”

“We still have things that we need to fix. We’re still working on mentally, but that has also improved.”

The next step is triple-triple jumps.

Rydberg knows if she follows the regimen Antensteiner and her other coaches set for her, she’ll be able to do it. Right now, she completes in 10 to 15 triple-triples each day. It’s all about repetition.

Aside from representing Team USA, Rydberg will try to compete in Nationals for the fourth consecutive year.

Since she is representing the U.S. in Croatia, Rydberg has a bye in regionals and will advance to sectionals. In November, she will travel to Cleveland. If she places in the

top four, she will make the trip to St. Paul, Minnesota for Nationals in January.

Next year, Rydberg will move on to the Senior division of figure skating.

This year, however, will always be remembered as her turning point in her career. All the hard work and dedication has led her to accomplishing her biggest goal, making Team USA. “I’m really excited to see a different part of the world and represent Team USA,” Rydberg said with a big smile.

OSWEGO – Even though the two squads are rivals, the Oswego-Oswego East and Plainfield co-op swimming and diving teams shared a senior night Tuesday at Oswego East.

Just before the 11th event, the meet was paused to honor Plainfield’s three seniors – Carly Kramer, Rachel Walter and Taylor Wade. Oswego’s five seniors then were recognized.

Oswego capped the evening with a 115-65 victory. “[These three seniors] mean the world to this program,” Plainfield coach George Sam said. “They are awesome.

They do a great job of leading.

It’s their team, and they’ve done a great job. It’s been fun working with them.”

Plainfield won the 200-yard medley relay in 1:52.99, and Kramer finished first in the 100-yard butterfly (57.35) and 100 backstroke (58.84).

2015 a so-so year for locals in big leagues Another major league baseball season is almost complete and the 2015 returns are so-so for our Joliet area products.

Right-handed pitcher Mike Foltynewicz (Minooka) split time this season between Triple-A Gwinnett and the parent Atlanta Braves after he was acquired last offseason from Houston in a trade for Adam Gattis.

Fotlynewicz went 4-6 with a 5.71 ERA in 15 starts and three relief appearances for the Braves. More than a week ago, he was hospitalized because of blood clots in his arm and had surgery to remove the anterior half of his first rib.

That certainly is not the way Foltynewicz envisioned his first season ending. He reportedly will be on blood thinners for at least six weeks.

Of course, if all goes well, he could be back next season better than ever. From everything we have seen, the Braves remain high on his potential and are anxious to have him healthy for 2016.

Then there’s Cincinnati Reds left-hander Tony Cingrani (Lincoln-Way Central). He had shoulder issues, spent sig-

nificant time on the disabled list and also was at Triple-A Louisville for a chunk of the season. With the parent Reds, he is 0-3 with a 5.01 ERA. In 32⅓ innings, he has allowed 27 hits and 23 walks while striking out 37.

Right-hander Tanner Roark (Wilmington) is 4-6 with a 4.76 ERA for Washington. He has pitched 98⅓ innings in 38 appearances, including 28 in relief, and has allowed 111 hits and 24 walks while striking out 60.

Incidentally, Roark still boasts an impressive 26-17 record with a 3.18 ERA in his career covering more than 350 innings. You can’t help but feel moving him out of the starting rotation when the Nationals signed Max Scherzer in the offseason did him no favors.

Infielder Dean Anna (Lincoln-Way East) had two brief stints with the parent St Louis Cardinals and was hitless in one at-bat.

At Triple-A Memphis, where he spent virtually the entire season, he hit .272 with 22 doubles, three triples, three homers and 44 RBIs.

The minor league season is history. The following is a look at how our local guys fared: Zach Petrick (Morris, JJC) spent the season as Anna’s teammate at Memphis and finished 7-7 with a 4.52 ERA. He started 28 games and pitched 157⅓ innings.

Outfielder Joe Benson (JCA) spent the first half of the season with the Braves’ Triple-A team at Gwinnett, was released and signed with the Mets, who assigned him to Double-A Binghamton. There he hit .250 with 10 doubles, a triple, four homers and 33 RBIs and was 7 for 8 in stolen bases.

Sam Travis (Providence) was a midseason All-Star at A-Advanced Salem, then put up similar numbers in the second half for Boston’s Double-A team at Portland. He hit .300 with 17 doubles, two triples, four homers, 38 RBIs and nine stolen bases for Portland after

hitting .313 with 15 doubles, four triples, five homers, 40 RBIs and 10 steals at Salem.

Right-hander Tony Bucciferro (Minooka) pitched at Double-A Birmingham in the White Sox organization most of the season and was 1-7 there with a 4.75 ERA. In 83⅓ innings, he allowed 113 hits and 21 walks while striking out 31.

Outfielder John Ruettiger (JCA) hit .265 for Class A-Advanced Frederick in the Baltimore organization. He had six doubles, two triples and stole 10 bases in 13 attempts.

Tyler Jay (Lemont) pitched at A-Advanced Palm Beach after being drafted No. 6 overall

by Minnesota and was 0-1 with a 3.93 ERA. In 18⅓ innings, he struck out 22.

The Texas Rangers promoted infielder Josh Altmann (Lockport) to A-Advanced High Desert late in the season, and he was 6 for 23 there with two triples and four RBIs. He hit 250 with 15 extra-base hits in the Arizona Rookie League, where he spent most of his first pro season.

Lefty Steve Sabatino (Lockport), a St. Louis farmhand, was 0-0 with a 4.05 ERA in 20

innings at Class A Peoria and, including time at A-Advanced Fort Myers, was 2-0 with a 4.01 ERA in 49⅓ innings.

With Oakland’s Class A Short Season affiliate at Vermont, Kevin Duchene (JCA) was 0-2 with a 4.84 ERA in 22⅓ innings and Derek DeYoung (Plainfield Central) was 0-1 with a 3.86 ERA in 11⅔ innings. Matt Borens (Peotone) was 1-4 with a 6.30 ERA in 50 innings for the Yankees’ team in the same New York-Penn League.

Matt Trowbridge (Providence) pitched 10⅔ innings for Baltimore’s Class A team at Delmarva, having spent much of the season on the disabled list.

Josh DeGraaf (Morris) pitched with Toronto’s affiliate in the Class A Short-Season Northwest League and was 2-2 with a 3.15 ERA in 34⅓ innings. Brandon Magallones (Providence) pitched for the White Sox’s Rookie League team at Great Falls and was 3-2 with a 4.35 ERA in 31 innings.

Opening race in Chase returning to Chicagoland SUBMITTED REPORT JOLIET – Chicagoland Speedway announced Tuesday it will host the first race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup in 2016 for a sixth consecutive year.

The weekend of Sept. 15 through 18 will feature all three of NASCAR’s premier series along with the addition of the ARCA Racing Series on Sept. 15.

The 2016 season also will mark the 15th anniversary celebration of Chicagoland Speedway.

Plans are under way to deliver an exciting lineup of event content and year-round programming. Details will be announced later.

From bread to beer to dinner: Try rye berries Rye is tolerant of cold and damp, making it the perfect grain for Northern Europe and Russia, where it features prominently in bread and beer.

Sturdy and very chewy with a rich, tangy flavor, rye berries make an excellent substitute for brown rice.

They also can be sprouted and added to salads, breads and other dishes. For the shortest cooking time and best results, cover 1 cup of rye berries with 1½ cups of boiling water and let the grains soak overnight.

When you are ready to cook, turn on the heat and simmer, covered, for 50 minutes to 1 hour, until the kernels just begin to pop.

Rye berries also can be cooked in a large pot of boiling, salted water, like pasta,

and drained when they are done, but they still must be soaked overnight.

Regardless of the cooking method, Maria Speck, author of “Simply Ancient Grains,” advises letting the fully cooked grains stand in the covered pot for 10 minutes before serving to absorb any remaining moisture.

Creamy Rye Berry and Green Bean Casserole With Lemon Crumbs Start to finish: 45 minutes Servings: 8

12 ounces green beans, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces 7 tablespoons butter, divided 2 cloves minced garlic 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups milk 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 8-ounce container mascarpone cheese 1 teaspoon smoked paprika 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill Kosher salt and ground black pepper 2 cups cooked rye berries 2 cups panko breadcrumbs Zest of 2 lemons Heat the oven to 400 degrees F. Coat a large casserole dish (such as a 9-by-9-inch baking dish) with cooking spray.

Bring a large saucepan of salted water to a bowl. Fill a medium bowl with ice water and set it nearby.

When the water is boiling, add the green beans and blanch for 3 minutes.

Using a slotted spoon, transfer them from the boiling water to the ice

water. After 2 minutes, drain the green beans and spread on a kitchen towel to dry.

Drain the water from the saucepan and return it to the heat.

Melt 3 tablespoons of the butter over medium heat, then add the garlic.

Stir and cook for 3 minutes, or until the garlic is just tender. Add the flour and stir to moisten completely. While whisking continuously to keep the mixture smooth, add the milk a little at a time until it is incorporated. Whisk continuously, making sure to scrape the bottom and corners of the pan, until the mixture comes to a simmer for 3 to 4 minutes and thickens.

Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the Worcestershire sauce, mascarpone cheese, paprika and dill.

Season with salt and pepper. Gently stir in the cooked rye berries and blanched green beans. Spoon into the

prepared casserole dish.

In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the remaining 4 tablespoons of butter. Add the breadcrumbs and stir while cooking until lightly toasted, about 3 to 4 minutes.

Remove from the heat and stir in the lemon zest. Season with salt and pepper, then sprinkle evenly over the top of the casserole. Bake for 15 minutes, or until everything is bubbling and hot.

Henry David Thoreau, an author and poet who died in 1862, said, “It is not worth the while to go round the world to count the cats in Zanzibar.”

I always thought that the key stat about Zanzibar is that the whole population of the world could stand on it. However, for a bridge player, this should become: It is worth the while to count as much as you can on every deal.

The hard part, of course, is working out what’s critical to count.

South is in three no-trump. West leads a fourth-highest club two. How should East defend?

South’s two-heart rebid was a reverse, which promised a maximum opening and that his hearts were shorter than his diamonds: 17-20 points and at least 4-5 in the red suits.

East needs to count declarer’s hand distribution. West’s lead promised a four-card suit, so South is known to have started with three clubs. Ergo, South probably has 1-45-3 distribution.

This should point East in the right direction. At trick two, he should shift to the spade king, just in case declarer has a singleton queen. Since East has diamonds under control, his side should be able to win five tricks before South collects nine. Even if West has the club king-jack, that suit can wait.

With the given layout, that’s exactly how the deal works out.

Declarer ducks a couple of spades, wins the third round with dummy’s ace, and tries to run the diamonds.

When they don’t break, he has to dislodge the club king to get out for down one.

runs in my family, and my mother says I should eat a “low glycemic index” diet. Can you explain what this is?

Dear Reader: Carbohydrates (“carbs,” for short) are one of the main types of nutrients in food.

Common sources of carbs include bread, pasta, cereals, fruit, milk, vegetables and beans.

The carbs we eat are mostly too big for us to digest.

Carbs are long strings of a certain type of molecule. Think of them as a string of pearls.

When they hit the gut, digestive enzymes start to chop them up. It is the one-pearl and two-pearl strings that are the sugars that get digested and travel from the gut into the blood.

As a result, the energy that is in those tiny pieces reaches every cell in our body.

Some of the carbs we eat are easy for our gut to reduce into tiny pieces. Other carbs take much longer to chop up.

When carbs are easily converted into sugars, blood sugar levels rapidly rise to higher levels.

When carbs are converted more slowly, blood sugar levels rise slowly to relatively lower levels.

Carbs that are chopped up slowly are said to have a low glycemic index. Carbs that are easily digested and absorbed, and raise blood sugar levels rapidly, have a high glycemic index. Of course, we don’t eat pure carbs (except for table sugar). We eat foods that contain carbs, and some foods contain more carbs than others.

So the amount of sugar that enters our bloodstream after a meal depends both on how

much carbohydrate they contain and how easily those carbs are absorbed (the glycemic index).

Multiplying the amount of carbs in a food by the glycemic index of those carbs determines the “glycemic load.”

For example, the glycemic index of a carrot is 131.

In comparison, a serving of mashed potatoes has a glycemic index of only 104. However, a halfcup serving of carrots has only about 4 grams of carbohydrate.

The same quantity of mashed potatoes has more than 18 grams of carbohydrate.

That’s why the glycemic load for a serving of carrots is 11, while that of a serving of potatoes is 20.

In a study of tens of thousands of women over several decades, a research team at Harvard Medical School found that those who had low glycemic loads (mainly from eating whole grains) cut their risk of weight gain in half.

On my website (AskDoctorK.com) there is a table that gives the glycemic index and glycemic load of common foods. You may well find that some of the foods you love have healthy glycemic loads.

Correction: Recently I wrote that the Mantoux skin test is the “only” way to diagnose an inactive TB infection.

I should have said the “most common” way.

There also is a blood test, which has some advantages over the skin test. I regret the omission.

Rauner orders closure, but state workers to stay on payroll

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner has ordered the Illinois State Museum system, including the Lockport Gallery, to shut its doors to the public by the end of the business day Wednesday.

But can Illinois’ top executive officer order the closure of a privately owned building?

Lockport Mayor Steven Streit doesn’t think so.

“It’s not the state’s building. It’s not the state’s [liability] insurance. It’s not the state’s artwork at this point,” Streit said Tuesday, noting he’s in talks with the building owner on keeping the museum’s doors open to visitors.

While the four other ISM branches are located on state property, making Illinois the landlord, so to speak, the Lockport Gallery — at 201 W. 10th St. — is not, said John Lustig, gallery manager.

“Who is wagging the dog?

That’s the open-ended question,” Lustig said.

It wouldn’t be the first time the museum staff and Lockport mayor have taken matters into their own hands.

Since the museum was emptied out this summer because of a lapse in insurance, the two parties pulled together to create “The People’s Exhibit,” so the walls now are filled with the public’s work made in reaction to the state’s budget crisis. Lockport officials recently placed the museum’s new artwork under the city’s insurance.

Streit said the city also will cover the museum’s rent and utility bills in the interim at a reduced price agreed upon with the building owner.

As a state employee, Lustig said he will follow Rauner’s orders, but that if Streit and the building owner choose to unlock the doors, that’s of their own free will.

Streit said Tuesday he hopes he can sidestep the closure orders, adding the museum is too valuable to the city’s continued development of downtown Lockport to be “under lock and key.”

the decision to close while employees continue to be paid.

Chris Young, spokesman for the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, said in an email Tuesday the state agency was set to lay off 107 bargaining-unit employees effective Sept. 30, but those layoffs were halted with the ongoing court case.

“At Illinois State Museum facilities, curators will be continuing their work with the museum collections. Scientific research also will continue.

Educators will begin planning future programming,” he wrote in the email.

Young deferred questions to Rauner’s office when asked about the estimated savings and if any progress is being made on the budget impasse by closing the ISM system.

Rauner spokeswoman Lyndsey Walters did not go into specifics about cost savings, but said in an email the closure of the ISM system and the Sparta Shooting Complex will save taxpayers “millions of dollars.”

Nonunionized workers’ roles are yet to be determined, Walters said.

“Illinois is facing a massive deficit because the state’s finances were mishandled for years. Governor Rauner is seeking structural reforms to free up resources to help our most vulnerable citizens and create jobs which will grow the economy. Unfortunately, the majority party continues blocking the governor’s reform agenda,” she said.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, said Rauner’s decision to pay state employees to sit inside a museum locked to the public “suggests that Rauner is not really concerned about saving tax dollars, but more concerned about getting his way.”

“And if getting his way means going to these ridiculous lengths, apparently he has an appetite for that,” McGuire said.

Dear Abby: My husband and I have been married for 22 years. My father-in-law’s health declined and he died last year. My mother-in-law, “Babe,” and I didn’t get on well in the past, but we have seemed to patch things up.

Since my father-in-law’s death, she has become very needy. As a result, my father has been at her beck and call, and I have become closer to her, too. My mother has started to become suspicious of the relationship between Babe and my dad. They have been seen drinking together and ignoring my mother.

Abby, this has become a horrible mess. Babe says she has kissed my father and they are attracted to each other. She has no regret about her behavior. I think she’s a hussy! My mother is now suicidal, and it’s all I can do to keep her afloat.

I am a cancer survivor and don’t need any of this stupid drama. Please help. These people are all pushing 70.

Joliet Junior College measuring up deer population problem Board trustee requests public input on issue of deer culling

At Tuesday’s Board of Trustees workshop meeting, trustees were notified of the deer population on campus impacting crops, properties and bike path safety. Judy Mitchell, JJC vice president of administrative services, wanted to see if deer culling – or population control by eliminating deer – would be a viable option.

“It’s been a concern, and ongoing concern since 2009,” Mitchell said.

She said the Illinois Department of Natural Resources confirmed there is excess number of deer at JJC and that department officials would support deer culling.

JJC trustees recommended contacting the Forest Preserve District of Will County as well as gathering public input. Board Vice Chairman Andy Mihelich said he wanted public input to see if there are other concerns and alternatives to controlling the deer population besides shooting.

“We can make a decision that would have a broader range of perspective,” Mihelich said.

Mitchell said college officials were contacted several weeks ago about damage to the crops from deer, as well as concerns about property damage to natural areas on campus.

After some research, she said, potential loss of revenue from crop damage would amount to $20,000. She also mentioned the possible loss of

She also said the college received a letter from a neighbor about bike path pedestrian safety around campus after they noticed a large number of deer on the paths.

She also said there has been concern about deer causing vehicle accidents and spreading disease.

The college could secure added insurance if it allows deer culling on campus at the cost of about $834, she said.

The college does have a certified hunter who takes care of skunk and raccoon issues on campus already, she said.

Staff with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources would come to campus and assess the damage.

The hunters would work mainly in the natural areas on campus and not use bows and arrows but guns, she said. Hunting would be restricted to weekends and holidays only.

Trustee Michael O’Connell said he has been on the paths surrounding JJC and seen dozens of deer himself.

“There are a lot out there,” he said.

Mitchell plans to research the issue further and come back at a future meeting with more information.

Presence Health opens new medical facility in Plainfield

That’s what Presence Healthcare officials are saying about their new Healing Arts Pavilion that opened Monday for appointments.

On Tuesday, Presence and Plainfield officials joined with church representatives to cut the ribbon for the medical facility, at 16615 S. Route 59.

“People were looking for something different,” said Kathleen Rhine, chief administration officer for Presence.

“They were looking for an experience when they need health care that was warm, welcoming, convenient, efficient and filled with an environment about helping people.”

The functional purpose of the pavilion is accented by a social area featuring a coffee bar with healthy food options, and a gathering space for educational programs and events.

“What’s surprising to folks is just the atmosphere in general, nothing like a physician office setting,” said Lisa Lagger, spokeswoman for Presence Healthcare.

Lagger said the facility is centered on the patient experience. And that starts from a navigator greeting a patient who walks in, to the appointment with the doctor, to on-site tests and walk-in follow-ups.

The facility also allows staff, providers, patients and caregivers to communicate more efficiently, something cardiologist Dr. Mary Gordon

said would help physicians give the best care.

“It’s very convenient,” said Gordon, who chairs network operations for physicians at Presence. “The added benefit is doctors talk with each other more and are on the same page.”

With Gordon, internal medicine Dr. Ghassan Rahhal and family medicine Dr. Vipuli Jayesinghe and Dr. Saba Osmani will operate out of the pavilion along with other physicians and specialists.

The pavilion will host an open house for the public from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. It will include a “speed dating” type opportunity to introduce physicians, a tour, raffles and kids attractions.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com MOKENA – Mokena has hired a new village administrator from a nearby city to replace the retired John Downs.

Crest Hill City Administrator John Tomasoski is scheduled to start working Nov. 2 for Mokena.

“He’s got good experience,” Mokena Mayor Frank Fleischer said, noting Tomasoski “asked questions administrators should ask” during his interview.

The Village Board approved his contract during Monday’s board meeting.

Tomasoski said his base salary will be $147,500.

Tomasoski will take over after Downs retired several months ago.

“Overall, I’m very excited about Mokena,” Tomasoski said. “I’ll learn and listen, and see how I can hopefully offer valuable input.”

Tomasoski was hired

through GovHR USA, a recruiting firm that specializes in public- and nonprofit-sector hires. He was selected from a list of 48 applicants.

That list was whittled down to six candidates who were interviewed, Fleischer said, then down to three for a second interview.

Tomasoski’s last day in Crest Hill will be Oct. 30. He was the first administrator for the city, a position he said he is proud to have defined.

“The professionalism and leadership that John Tomasoski has brought to the city will be tremendously missed,” Crest Hill Mayor Ray Soliman said. “The city of Crest Hill’s loss will be the village of Mokena’s gain.”

Soliman said Crest Hill soon will hire an interim city administrator, who will help with the search process to find a permanent replacement. Soliman said it has yet to be determined if the interim hire will be in-house.

Police: Mokena woman found dead in home

MOKENA – Mokena police are investigating the death of a 22-year-old woman.

Chief Steven Vaccaro said police received a call from a friend of the woman about 9:30 p.m.

Monday. The friend reported the woman was unresponsive.

Vaccaro said officers went to the woman’s home in the 19200 block of Thornham Lane. When they arrived, they saw the woman appeared to have been dead for several days, Vaccaro said.

Vaccaro said no one else was at her home when police arrived.

He said police do not yet know the cause and manner of death, and are investigating it with the Will County Coroner’s Office.

“At this point, we are treating it as a death investigation,” he said.

Chief Deputy Coroner Bob Brenczewski said Tuesday the cause of death is unknown. He said the autopsy is completed, but the toxicology report and police investigation are pending.

8 Open houses set at Joliet fire stations

School evacuated for methane gas smell THE HERALD–NEWS BOLINGBROOK – Oak View Elementary School was evacuated briefly Tuesday morning because of a gas smell.

A plumber was working on a clogged drain when the odor was detected, Valley View School District 365U spokesman Larry Randa said.

The school was evacuated as a precaution, and fire crews were called. The smell was determined to be methane gas from the sewer, and students returned to class about 30 minutes later, shortly after 10 a.m.

ROMEOVILLE— More than 150 people filled out voter registration applications during a National Voter registration Day event Sept. 22 at Lewis University’s main campus.

National Voter Registration Day is a single day of coordinated field, technology and media efforts to create widespread awareness of voter registration opportunities that would otherwise be missed.

Lewis students were encouraged to participate in the event where they could check their registration status, change their information if needed or register themselves to be eligible to vote on the Nov. 3 Election Day. People also can register to vote at government offices, public libraries, and online by visiting www.elections.il.gov.

By SARWAT S. AHMAD Shaw Media Correspondent NEW LENOX – Despite some qualms about resident concerns, the New Lenox Village Board has approved an increase in sewer rates set to start Jan. 1 in order to generate revenue for upgrades and expansion of the village’s sewage system.

Village trustees present and Mayor Tim Baldermann approved the ordinance, which came to the board two weeks ago and most likely will increase the average family’s monthly water bill by about $15. Trustee Keith Madsen was absent.

According to the ordinance, residents younger than 65 will see their volume rate go up from $5.05 to $7.87 per 1,000 gallons. The fixed monthly rate also will increase – to $11.19 from $7.

Senior citizens’ fixed monthly rate will stay at $7, and their volume rate for the

first 1,000 gallons used will stay at $5.05. Consumption above that will be billed at the $7.87-per-1,000-gallons rate.

Rates will increase 8 percent in 2017 and 2018, with 5 percent, 4 percent and 3 percent increases in 2019, 2020 and 2021, respectively.

Originally on the consent agenda, the measure was pulled by Trustee David Smith for discussion before the vote.

Having received calls from about 40 residents expressing concerns about the rate hike, Smith recommended possibly postponing the vote to submit a survey to residents.

No residents were present at the meeting to discuss the rate increase.

Smith said residents were concerned about the effect on their water bills, and that they offered for the village keep their property tax rebates in lieu of an increase on monthly rates.

He recommended sending

Trustee Annette Bowden was skeptical about how many residents would return the survey and whether the village would get a “true” sense of what the majority wanted.

Smith also briefly recommended possibly increasing rates for commercial and industrial users and not residents. Baldermann said that

In the past, the village has paid for maintenance of its system with tap-on fees from new development; but at a meeting two weeks ago, trustees said growth still was less than expected and proactive action was needed. The village recently started the process for a $19 million project to expand sewage plant No. 2.

Separately, the village is considering annexation, rezoning and special-use requests by H & K Partnership to build a Parkview Christian Church on 80 acres between Laraway and Schoolhouse roads. Parkview has campuses in Orland Park and Lockport.

Residents of a neighboring subdivision expressed concern at the meeting regarding possible traffic congestion on Sundays. The board likely will vote on the preliminary measures at its next regular meeting Oct. 12.

Village board OKs sewer rate hike

CAMPTON HILLS – U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren said he is accepting applications for fall 2015 and spring 2016 semester internships in both his Washington, D.C., and Campton Hills offices.

The position is unpaid and will start immediately and run through December for the fall semester, and January to May for the spring semester. Academic credit may be available, and schedules can be flexible for those with classes or other obligations. Applicants from the 14th Congressional District are preferred. Applications for the fall semester are ongoing.

For spring semester applicants, applications are due by Dec 1.

Applicants should be college students or recent graduates, and will assist staff with constituent relations, policy and outreach efforts. Many duties will be administrative in nature, but interns also may be asked to staff Congressman Hultgren at meetings in the district or assist legislative staff in Washington.
