Joliet police stop 2 heroin overdoses

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police officers used their new drug kits to save two men from heroin overdoses this week.

“Our shipment arrived about two weeks ago and already we’re seeing the fortunate effect,” Chief Brian Benton said Wednesday.

Officers now are carrying Narcan, a nasal spray that counters the potentially-fatal outcome of heroin overdoses.

On Monday night, a woman in the 900 block of Jasper Street found an unresponsive man, Deputy Chief Ed Gregory said. Officer Nicholas Crowley was the first to arrive and used Narcan to re-

vive the 35-year-old.

“He admitted [to] using drugs and officers found a white powder and a soda can [that was] burned on the bottom to cook the drug,” Gregory said.

The man was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center where fresh track marks were found on his arm, according to Gregory.

At 6:41 p.m. Tuesday, a 35-year-old man was discovered unconscious in Pilcher Park.

“Sgt. Dave Mueller responded to the call and determined the man was in a heroin-induced coma,” Gregory said.

As the man was being taken to Silver Cross Hospital in

New Lenox, firefighters said Mueller’s administration of Narcan had saved his life, according to Gregory.

The city authorized the use of drug forefeiture funds for the kits earlier this year and the Timothy C. Klotz Memorial Fund also donated money.

The Joliet Fire Department has used Narcan for many years. Narcan is a trade name for the opioid antidote drug naxolene. Police and fire responders have increasingly made use of Narcan to prevent deaths from heroin overdoses.

Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said Wednesday there have been 35 confirmed and four suspected heroin deaths in Will County this year.

JOLIET – The squeal of tires led police to recover a stolen handgun early Wednesday.

At 1:08 a.m. officers were near Franklin and Jackson streets when they saw and heard a red 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix screeching its tires, according to Deputy Chief Ed Gregory.

“The vehicle drove to the stop sign where it screeched again up and down Jackson Street,” Gregory said. “Of-

ficers stopped the car and smelled the strong odor of cannabis when they approached and [the occupants] rolled down the windows.”

After Anthony McGee, 20, a 23-year-old man, a 19-year-old woman and a 17-year-old girl got out of the Grand Prix, officers found a loaded semi-automatic pistol in the driver’s door, Gregory said.

According to police reports, the gun was reported stolen in March 2014 in Allen County, Indiana.

Joliet high school intervention program almost eliminated this school year

JOLIET – Marissa Gonzalez wasn’t someone she wanted to be in her freshman year at Joliet West High School.

She said that was a time when she was struggling academically and having issues at home. She didn’t care about school and wanted attention from the wrong people. But with the help of a counselor from an intervention program at her school, she was able to turn her life around.

Gonzalez never saw herself as a college-bound student in high school but she now attends Joliet Junior College.

She still keeps in touch with the counselor who supported her.

“She would challenge me back, which was really cool,” Gonzalez said. “I doubted myself a lot and she helped me build my confidence back. She showed me, ‘Hey, you can be a different person. You don’t have to let your past affect your future.’ ” The Youth Experiencing Success in School intervention program that has helped Gonzalez and hundreds of other students with emotional and social problems at Joliet Township High School District 204 in the past 10 years, faced possible elimination before the school year began.

But district and Will County officials have saved it in the short term. Now they are working on preserving the program that gives immediate assistance to students facing emotional or mental health challenges in the long run.

Need for YESS

The need for the YESS program at District 204 was evident in 2005 when it began, after district officials secured a federal grant for almost $1 million.

At an Aug. 5 meeting about YESS, district officials said there were 336 incidents of

fighting and 338 assaults in 2005.

“There wasn’t even any time to intervene to speak with the families because an incident would already occur,” said Jenine Barnes, a district pupil personnel ser-

vice coordinator and YESS director. “I remember a time when there were three fights in a five-minute passing period.”

The number of expulsions was high at 110 in 2005 and Barnes recalled being in-

volved in 15 expulsion hearings in one month. District officials would hear from families that the students being kicked out were not given enough support, she said.

The schools and staff realized students were not receiving social emotional services and had barriers to mental health treatment, such as financial limitations and

distance from agencies that could assist them.

Metra resumes after fatal crash in Lemont

By ANNA SCHIER aschier@shawmedia.com LEMONT – Trains were running again as of 7:47 p.m.

Wednesday on Metra’s Heritage Corridor line after a fatal crash in Lemont brought the line’s evening trains to a halt.

About 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, a person was on the

tracks and was struck by an outbound train from Chicago between the Willow Springs and Lemont stations, according to Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile.

The train involved in the crash was delayed two hours near Main Street and Kotlin Road in Lemont, she said.

The next scheduled train was

delayed 90 minutes and the line’s final evening train was delayed more than an hour.

There was no indication that a train malfunction caused the crash, according to Reile, who added that the person who was hit was at least a mile from any station and was likely not a passenger.

Plainfield Central put on temporary lockdown after nearby gun threat

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS and FELIX SARVER Shaw Media PLAINFIELD – A man is in custody after he made a threat to Plainfield police that he would shoot anyone who came near him.

Plainfield Police Chief John Konopek said authorities received a call at 5:25 p.m. Wednesday regarding a 64-year-old man at 15412 S. James St. – near Plainfield Central High School – who said he had a gun and was going to shoot anyone near him, including police.

Police put Plainfield Central High School on lockdown because there were student activities taking place outside, Konopek said. Police set up a perimeter as well.

District 202 spokesman Tom Hernandez said Plainfield police called him about 5:30 p.m. and said there was a situation involving a gunman at an apartment complex near the school, and the school needed to be placed on lockdown.

Hernandez said students participating in football and band practice and playing on the tennis courts were ushered inside the school, and the doors were locked.

Assistance was requested from other police agencies because of the nature of the call, Konopek said.

The man was walking around the James Street address and approached officers with a gun, which turned out to be a realistic replica to his head, Plainfield police said.

The orange tip of the pistol had been painted black, Konopek said. Toy guns are given orange tips to distinguish them from real weapons.

“It resembled a real gun to

our officers, and even to me back here looking through binoculars,” Konopek said, noting he was standing behind the football field at the high school.

After a one-hour standoff, the man surrendered and laid down on the ground, Konopek said. Police took him into custody, and he was taken to a local hospital for evaluation. As of 7 p.m., no charges had been filed; Konopek said authorities still were investigating and will determine charges once they are done.

The lockdown at Plainfield Central was lifted about 6:10 p.m., Hernandez said, after police took the man into custody.

High-end apartments replacing vacant Rose Plaza development

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – The vacant Rose Plaza commercial property in Romeoville will soon become a 292-unit highend apartment complex, after village trustees approved a rezoning special use permit and planned unit development of the project.

Continental Properties, a Wisconsin-based developer, presented plans for the apartments to the village board Wednesday.

The project, called “Springs at Weber Road,” would rezone the 18.5-acre property, located off the northwest corner of Renwick and Weber roads behind McDonalds, from B-3 Highway/ Regional Shopping District to R-7 General Residential District.

“We’ve discussed this for a very long time,” Trustee Dave Richards said. “We’re all glad to be at this point where we can move forward on this project.”

The apartment project includes 15 two-story apartment buildings, including a mixture of 30 studio, 112 one-bedroom, 120 two-bedroom and 30 three-bedroom units.

Amenities include a 4,000-square-foot clubhouse, 24-hour modern fitness facility, car care center and dog park.

The apartments are considered high-end, following the quality of “Springs” apartments built in other communities, Continental Properties representative Eric Thom said.

“Part of the reason why we first looked at the site was we saw a significant demand for rental housing [among rent-

ers aged 20 to 34],” Thom said.

The apartments will be gated off with a main entrance off the internal Rose Plaza private drive south of Grand Haven Circle.

Special use

A special use permit was required for the project because it contains seven code exceptions.

The residential density of the project is 15.8 dwelling units per acre, higher than the village’s 12 units per acre requirement. But Mayor John Noak noted that the density was lower than other apartment projects in the area.

Other exceptions include allowing a minimum studio size of 600 square feet, a reduced building separation of 30 feet, smaller parking stall and pavement widths, a temporary building for leasing purposes until clubhouse construction, a reinforced concrete storm pipe alternative and a lowered elevation for detached garages.

Some other considerations trustees and staff were concerned about include where retention water would go, ensuring the quality of the housing and traffic.

Village Engineer Jon Zabrocki said the property shares storm water retention with other developments in the area.

Thom said the project was modified to reduce unit density and improve outside appearance, pushing the estimated cost of the project to $42 million. He suggested the quality of the apartments can be seen in the rent, with a studio leasing for $1,000 a month.

Thom also said traffic would be greatly reduced compared to a commercial development.

Rauner wins labor fight; House fails to override

By JOHN O’CONNOR The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner won a victory over a Democratic majority Wednesday when the Illinois House failed to override his veto of legislation designed to prevent a strike or lockout if union contract negotiations break down.

Democrats under House Speaker Michael Madigan of Chicago voted, 68-34, to reverse Rauner’s rejection of the measure that would give an independent arbitrator power to decide who wins if there’s an impasse in negotiations between the administration and the state’s largest employee union. To become law, the legislation needed a threefifths majority of 71 votes.

Lawmakers who represent Will and Grundy counties voted primarily down party lines on the measure.

Democrats Natalie Manley, D-Joliet, Larry Walsh Jr.,

D-Elwood, and Emily McAsey, D-Lockport, all voted yes.

Reps. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, and Margo McDermed, R-Monee, voted no and Rep. John Anthony, R-Plainfield, voted present.

The vote marked a key showdown between the General Assembly’s pro-union majority and the first-year Republican governor they fear wants to smash organized labor. The Senate voted to overturn the veto last month, so a House override would have made it law.

Rauner said he hopes the vote “marks the beginning of serious negotiations” in a summer-long dispute over the budget, which should have taken effect July 1.

“While House members chose to help us avoid digging a deeper financial hole, we still have a lot of work to do, and time is of the essence,” Rauner said in a statement after the vote.

Democrats had argued that arbitration offered moderation to tense talks and would prohibit the extremes of picket lines or a government shutdown. The GOP argued it would take away from the taxpayer-elected governor the ability to decide how much the state can afford to pay its employees.

During more than 90 minutes of debate, override opponents pointed out that Rauner just this week reached a tentative agreement with 4,600 state employees represented by the Teamsters, whose leader declared Rauner’s negotiating team tough but fair. But supporters noted that arbitration is used in contract negotiations among emergency-ser-

vices workers, such as police and firefighters, who could cripple government service with a strike.

The House overwhelmingly reversed Rauner’s partial veto Wednesday of a major initiative to attack heroin abuse. The 105-5 vote sends the measure to the Senate, which with an override could make it law.

Rauner agreed with the bulk of the wide-ranging approach but said the Medicaid health care program for the poor can’t afford coverage of key medication for treatment and to reverse overdoses.

Lawmakers also advanced legislation to prevent Rauner from closing the Illinois State Museum in Springfield and its satellite sites to save money.

They also approved a measure to keep thousands of families eligible for state-subsidized child care assistance, which Rauner restricted sharply July 1 because there’s no state budget agreement.

Coal City launches new website Exotic animals freed, recaptured On the Web

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com BEECHER TOWNSHIP – Two weeks after someone cut off the cage locks to free the animals at an exotic animal rescue shelter in eastern Will County, the owner is still unsure who was behind the act.

Pinky Jakota, owner of Settler’s Pond in Beecher Township, said Wednesday all the animals – including an emu, a Palawan porcupine and two kinkajous – have been recaptured since the Aug. 20 incident.

“We just started chasing them. But we work with them so much that they usually run up to the house. Food is a good motivator,” Jakota said.

But she’s concerned why someone would do this, she said. The shelter has been in business about 27 years. Its affiliates travel the U.S. picking up exotic animals that were il-

legally bought or are in deplorable conditions to bring them to the shelter.

Shelter staff said the incident happened between the evening hours of Aug. 19 and 20, according to Will County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer. Hoffmeyer said the owner told police she suspects PETA may be behind the escape, but “has no proof” that there’s a connection.

Jakota said Wednesday she thinks the animals may have been freed in retaliation for the rescue seizure of dozens of animals from a Steger home at the end of July. The homeowner, Chester Slenck, has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals – a Class 4 felony, Steger Police Deputy Chief Patrick Rossi said Wednesday.

COAL CITY – The village of Coal City launched a new, more interactive website on Aug. 28.

The revamped site was done by Script Fusion Development Services of Coal City.

Owner Tyler Jones, a Coal City resident, said the project was important to him.

“I really wanted to give back in some way,” Jones said. “It was a great opportunity to take that step.”

Hopeful the new site improves communication between the community and administration, Jones said his company aimed to make the site more engaging.

There are a few ways Jones and his staff are accomplishing this. First, alerts, such as the dog park closure, and events, such as the Coal City Community Garage Sale, are posted on the homepage.

Third, and probably the most significant, the village and Script Fusion Development Services are finalizing an SMS alert registration system that will be posted on the website.

“If they sign up, and there’s a blackout, road maintenance or anything like that, the village will let you know what’s going on via text message,” Jones said.

The need for a new website wasn’t spurred by the June EF3 tornado that swept through Coal City, Jones said. The company was midway through the design phase when the tornado hit.

But Jones said an alert sys-

tem would have been helpful in that situation.

“I live by the high school,” Jones said. “I know it would have been a little bit easier if we could have provided information about road closures or affected areas rather than going to Facebook hearsay.”

Now, residents will be able to get firsthand accounts of what’s going on straight from village hall when the system is added in the near future. Jones’ staff has been cleaning up the site and recently spent some time training village administration.

There will be ongoing work as more features are added.

Scripts Fusion Development Services is going to collaborate with a local photographer to add more variation of photos on the site to showcase the village’s annual events.

The judge did not immediately rule on several motions submitted by lawyers on both sides.

“One of the wonderful things being on-site is that we are able to see the kids really quickly without disruption to their school day, without disruption to their lives. They are able to come in and get their issues resolved,” said Michelle Zambrano, YESS program manager.

Even after federal funding ran out and several partner agencies either stopped inschool services or reduced them, the district was able to keep the program going.

Compared to 2005, the school climate changed in 2014, with 104 incidents of fighting and 248 incidents of assault, district officials said. Expulsions also were down to 36.

Long-term future

District officials said they needed $100,000 to support YESS staff in the short term while finding ways during the school year to fund the program in the long term.

The program almost was eliminated before the school year because the Will County Health Department – under the strain of state funding cuts – could not provide staff support.

ney James Glasgow, whose office has been involved with YESS since its inception, pledged $10,000 in forfeiture money to the program Aug. 5. He said if students didn’t receive intervention from the program, the “social cost is enormous.”

Superintendent Cheryl McCarthy also made the case for YESS at an Aug. 19 Will County Board of Health meeting, where members said they would like to support the program and found money in the budget to fill the funding gap.

Joseph Troiani, a Will County behavioral health programs director, later said the YESS program would continue with reduced staff hours.

The district and health department will look at grant and other funding opportunities during the school year in order to keep the program going. At the Aug. 19 meeting, Troiani said YESS is a program that saves lives.

For Gonzalez, who still is friends with her counselor after graduating, the program has changed her life.

Her counselor, Zambrano, was her reassurance whenever she was in doubt, she said.

“I would sit down and say ‘Michelle, I can’t do it anymore, I’m done. It’s too much for me,’ ” Gonzalez said.

“She’d sit there and laugh at me. ‘Are you really done?’

The HERALD–NEWS PLAINFIELD – The intersection of Route 30 and Renwick Road was reopened Wednesday afternoon after being closed much of the morning because of a gas leak.

Just before 9 a.m., road construction crews hit a gas line near the intersection, according to Plainfield fire inspector Mary Kay Ludemann.

Renwick Road was closed between Route 30 and Route 59 while Nicor crews and first responders worked on repairing the leak, and a WESCOM 911 center spokeswoman said there was no health risk to the public.

As of 1:30 p.m., the intersection was open, according to a district news release.

Born in Mission, Texas, the daughter of Rafael and Mercedes Torres, a lifelong Joliet resident.

Retired from ComEd following 21+ years of service. Member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church. Knitting and crocheting were her greatest talents. She also was an avid cook and loved to dance to Tejano music.

Survived by her loving husband of 46 years, Lupe Barbosa of Joliet; three children, Lupe (Kiki) Barbosa, Rene J. Marge volunteered at OLA, both St. Joseph and Silver Cross Hospitals, and Meals-On-Wheels. Hobbies she especially loved were bowling, ceramics, photography, reading and picnics.

Fox Lake manhunt: Police hope surveillance video sparks leads

Joseph “G.I. Joe” Gliniewicz as the search continues.

Lake County Major Crime Task Force Cmdr. George Filenko said at a news conference Wednesday the manhunt was far from over, although police stopped searching a specific 2-mile perimeter Tuesday night.

“This is an ongoing investigation,” Filenko said.

“We’ve been following up on leads since yesterday. …

We’re still continuing to follow up on leads.”

Tips are coming in from the across the country, Filenko said, acknowledging the volume of leads could be attributed to the vague description of the suspects. Authorities have nothing to go on other than their gender and race, which Gliniewicz radioed to dispatch minutes before he was shot and killed.

Filenko said the suspects – two white males and one black male – should be considered armed and dangerous and urged citizens to remain vigilant.

“They shot a police officer – I think that speaks for itself,” Filenko said.

Sayton Road and Route 12. At 7:55 a.m. he called for backup, and officers arrived at 8:01 a.m. At 8:09 a.m. they found Gliniewicz unresponsive with a gunshot wound. He was about 50 yards from his vehicle near a swampy area.

Tuesday’s search brought about 400 law enforcement officers to the area with dozens of K-9 units, armored vehicles and helicopters. Hours after the shooting, authorities conducted a systematic grid search in a 2-mile radius around the area of Sayton Road and Route 12. Filenko said they have no reason to believe the offenders crossed the nearby state line into Wisconsin.

On Wednesday, 100 officers expanded outside that perimeter and continued the search in Fox Lake. Police ramped up patrols and knocked on doors as part of a “saturated” effort.

“When something like this happens the whole community is victimized,” Lake County Sheriff’s Detective Chris Covelli said. “We want the community to know that we are keeping them safe.”

The FBI, ATF and U.S. Marshal Service along with Illinois State Police and officers throughout Lake County are assisting in the investigation. The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office also sent resources.

Filenko would not comment on whether Gliniewicz’s own gun was used in the crime or if it was recovered.

He would not say if there were any dashcam video or eyewitnesses.

Investigators are collecting and reviewing surveillance video from area businesses and residences.

Filenko said it would take some time to gather and review any videos.

Balloons and flowers were left at the Fox Lake Police Department during a manhunt Tuesday for three people suspected in the killing of Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz.

Sadness, anger after Fox Lake officer shooting We wish we had the wisdom to explain why something as horrible as Tuesday’s murder of a Fox Lake police officer could happen.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Fox Lake police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz, who was gunned down in cold blood Tuesday morning in a town he’d served for 30 years.

Gliniewicz – a husband, a father of four, a youth volunteer, an Army veteran and so much more – was shot and killed in yet another senseless act of violence against the same law enforcement officers who work to keep our communities safe.

THE FIRST

“We lost a family member,” Fox Lake Mayor Donny Schmit said during an emotional news conference Tuesday afternoon. ‘’His commitment to the people of this community has been unmatched and will be dearly missed.”

Yes, Gliniewicz, 52 and known around Fox Lake as “G.I. Joe,” will be missed. He was a true civil servant and family man, as those who knew him described.

Just last week, a Texas sheriff’s deputy was shot 15 times while innocently pumping gas into his patrol car, apparently because he was wearing the uniform.

Violence against law enforcement has increased since

the shooting last year in Ferguson, Missouri, of Michael Brown and the racial unrest and riots that followed.

It must stop.

We have no reason to believe the shooting of Gliniewicz was tied to any backlash against law enforcement. In his last communication to authorities, he radioed dispatchers to let them know he was pursuing three men on foot and requested backup.

While we are saddened by Gliniewicz’s loss and mourn with all of Fox Lake and the law enforcement community, we also are angry.

Angry that this happened so close to home.

Angry that Gliniewicz was stolen from his wife and children.

A massive manhunt for the three suspects – described by authorities as two white men and one black man – continued late Tuesday night and into Wednesday.

We know nothing more about the motive or the circumstances surrounding Gliniewicz’s death.

We, of course, hope everyone involved in his murder is

captured and prosecuted, and that they never see the outside of a maximum security prison again.

We hope to be able to know why, although we realize that won’t offer comfort.

Today is a sad day.

Today, we mourn for the Fox Lake police officer who was so cowardly gunned down while protecting and serving residents of the village.

We pray for the loved ones he left behind.

We stand with the residents of Fox Lake, and the brotherhood and sisterhood of police officers who put their lives at risk daily so we can be safe.

Finally, we seek lasting justice.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

cherron@shawnedia.com JOLIET – Nobody likes to experience a rough opening match, but if lessons are learned from it, then it’s not the worst thing that can happen.

Joliet Catholic’s girls volleyball team ran into a buzzsaw against powerhouse Mother McAuley last week but was better for that experience when it kicked off its

home schedule on Wednesday against Minooka.

The Angels jumped out to a big lead in the opener, only to see the Indians stage a rally.

But JCA came back to win the opener and carried that momentum into the second set as it captured a 25-23, 25-18 nonconference victory.

“McAuley exposed some of our weaknesses, and we’ve been working hard on those this week,” JCA coach Christine Scheibe said. “We worked

on getting our passing a little bit crisper and to serve a little bit more aggressively. Being a smaller team, we have to do those small things because we’re not going to overpower anybody at the net. We have to try to get the other team out of system for us to be successful, and we did that tonight.

“We had a real good start in game one before they got on a little run. I thought we showed a lot of fight and tenacity to come back and win that one.

And then I kind of felt like we were pretty much in control the whole way in Game 2.

This senior group of leaders is very strong and has always had a lot of fight and tenacity in them. I think that they’re a good, solid team right now, but I think that they can go wherever they want to.”

Things started off well for the Angels (1-1) as they grabbed an early, 13-3 advantage. Minooka (2-4) struggled in several aspects during the

“We can only get better from here. Last year, we came so close to winning it that it just motivates us even more. I like how seven of us went to the same school or played on the same club team for nine seasons. We know each other so well and communicate easily.”

The second set was more competitive, with Minooka still within 10-8 before JCA began to pull away. Kills from Megan Cladis (five kills, nine digs)

and Sarah Nahas made it 13-8, then Megan Melone (six assists) served up a pair of aces to help make it 17-10 before Jessica Simon (three blocks, five assists) added a kill to help give the Angels a 20-12 lead. Taylor Zurliene (two aces, two kills, six perfect passes) and Meghan Harrison (11 digs) also contributed.

“Minooka is one of our rivals, and they came back against us, but we kept fighting,” Zurliene said. “We really played together today. We did not start off good last season but finished really well and achieved so many goals. And this year we have so much more to achieve.

“We’re like a family playing out there. No matter how far down we go, we always get back up. We never get our heads down, and we always work together and pick each other up.

“The girls fought back and made a good comeback.”

advance to the gold bracket at the Plainfield North Invite, but then lost its next four matches in coach Carrie Prosek’s first year.

“We missed seven or eight serves in the first game,” Prosek said. “The girls fought back and made a good comeback. JCA is always solid and doesn’t make mistakes, but a lot of the points they were given were unforced errors, and that’s something we have to work on. We have to work on passing, and that’s something I knew from the beginning of the year.”

NEW LENOX – The freshmen are setting the standard for the Lincoln-Way Central girls golf team.

Bri Bolden birdied the second and eighth holes en route to shooting a 2-under-par 34, and Grace Curran also had two birdies in her round of 35 Wednesday as the Knights ran away from Lincoln-Way West and Stagg in a triangular at the Sanctuary Golf Course in New Lenox. Central finished at 158, West at 188 and Stagg at 248.

Bolden and Curran have combined to shoot 7 under par in the last two matches on the front nine at the Sanctuary. Maddy Karlson helped the Knights’ cause with a 43, and Jazmin Lainowski and Hannah Mastandrea shot 46.

Key college football roles for area standouts It’s Week 2 of the high school football season, and it also is opening weekend for major college football.

Just thinking about some of excellent high school players we enjoyed watching in recent years who are toiling on the national collegiate stage.

We begin with the program in turmoil – Illinois. While interim coach Bill Cubit tries to sort things out and somehow win some games, several former area standouts are prepared to help make that happen.

Our Illini list begins with senior running back Josh Ferguson (Joliet Catholic), who is concluding an outstanding collegiate career. Could an NFL career be in his future? Stay tuned.

Also on the offensive side of the ball at Illinois is red-shirt freshman guard Nick Allegretti (Lincoln-Way East). He either will start or be a top backup at

Defensively, junior Robbie Bain (Bolingbrook) is slated to start at tackle, and Clayton Fejedelem (Lemont) will start at safety. Fejedelem is an interesting story. He transferred to Illinois after starring for two years on the NAIA level at Saint Xavier.

Last season, he made 12 tackles in the Northwestern game, which ended the regular season.

Junior BJ Bello (Lincoln-Way West) is listed as the second-team middle linebacker for the Illini.

A former Illini backup quarterback, Aaron Bailey (Bolingbrook), is at Northern Iowa and is not in the top

7. Lemont (1-0): The beat goes on for the Indians as they ride their shut-down defense to a 21-6 victory over Plainfield South.

8. Joliet West (1-0): Tigers take care of business at Moline, 30-15, and seek a second straight road win at Plainfield South.

9. Morris (1-0): The Redskins figure to have more of a challenge this week at Washington than they had last week against Chicago Austin.

10. Minooka (1-0): The Indians move into the rankings as their offense, behind quarterback Johnny Carnagio, produces in 35-34 victory at Stagg.

At Northern Illinois, senior Perez Ford (Romeoville) will start at defensive end. One-time JCA quarterback Anthony Maddie, who began his college career at Western Michigan, is the No. 2 quarterback.

Local fans will be keeping an eye on Michigan this season, not only because Jim Harbaugh is coaching, but also because Ty Issac (JCA) – who has three years of eligibility after transferring from USC and sitting out last season – is in the mix at tailback. He is in competition with De’Veon Smith and Derrick Green, and all indications are that all three will see time, at least until someone wins the job.

Senior Antonio Morrison (Bolingbrook) will begin this season manning his accustomed middle linebacker spot at Florida. That represents an amazingly quick recovery from major knee surgery after he was injured and carted off the field during the Birmingham Bowl on Jan 3. Morrison led the Ga-

Bowling Green, meanwhile, is hoping for a big season from red-shirt senior defensive tackle Zach Colvin (Minooka), who returns after missing most of last season with injury.

Junior Ethan Pocic (Lemont) begins the fall as the LSU center.

He started games at center and guard last season and is considered a potential NFL lineman of the future.

Last season, a teammate of Pocic at LSU was then-freshman Clifton Garrett (Plainfield South). The linebacker surprised observers early this summer when he left LSU and transferred to Arizona Western College. He reportedly already has received an offer from Arizona to transfer there after this season.

Arizona Western is a junior

college that has been coached the last several years – very successfully, we might add – by former Joliet Junior College coach Tom Minnick. One of Minnick’s assistants is defensive line coach Tony Mitchell Jr., who was on his staff at JJC. Garrett, you may recall, was among the highest-ranked outside linebackers in the Midwest and was in the top 10 at his position in the country coming out of Plainfield South.

He saw limited action as an LSU freshman.

Am I the only one puzzled by what exactly the Bears’ game plan is these days?

It was the lack of a clear vision and a well mappedout plan as to how to build a Super Bowl contender that got them into this mess in the first place.

Former general manager Jerry Angelo and coach Lovie Smith had a plan, but over their last four or five seasons they couldn’t hit on a draft choice to save their lives, other than Matt Forte.

If GM Phil Emery and coach Marc Trestman had a plan, I still haven’t been able to figure out what it was.

Trading for Brandon Marshall, drafting Shea McClellin, ridiculously overpaying Jay Cutler when they didn’t have to and letting Julius Peppers go to sign Jared Allen to a cap-friendly contract in Year 1 that became punitive in Year 2 is about as close to chaos as it gets in the NFL. Now, what exactly are GM Ryan Pace and coach John Fox up to?

Slammers’ bats go silent in loss SUBMITTED REPORT AVON, Ohio – The Joliet Slammers ran into some tough pitching Wednesday night and dropped a 3-2 decision to Lake Erie.

Marc Flores hit a solo homer for the Slammers (39-53) in the second inning, but that was one of only three hits Joliet managed. The other Slammers run came on an error by the catcher.

Daniel DeSimone earned the win with five innings of work, allowing two hits. Mike Devine contributed three innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit while striking out four and walking none. Trevor Longfellow picked up the save with a perfect ninth.

Kevin Walter took the loss for Joliet, giving up a three-run third inning that knocked him from the game. Juan Sanchez’s two-run homer was a key hit for Lake Erie (38-53). That was followed by a Daniel Aldrich solo shot that turned out to be the game-winner.

Luke Crumley came on for the Slammers and pitched five innings of scoreless relief. He allowed four hits with six strikeouts and one walk.

Votto 3-run HR in 9th after Bryant error, Reds beat Cubs

CHICAGO – Kris Bryant hardly had time to enjoy his latest home run.

The rookie third baseman hit a tying drive in the eighth inning, then made a two-out error in the ninth that set up Joey Votto’s three-run homer and lifted the Cincinnati Reds over the Cubs, 7-4, Wednesday.

“It’s tough,” Bryant said. “Obviously, you’re on Cloud Nine when you hit the game-tying home run, then you blow it the next inning.”

“But sometimes baseball works that way. It’s a crazy game,” he said.

Bryant’s two-run shot made it 4-all.

The rookie has 22 home runs and 84 RBIs this season.

For instance, Taylor said, instead of relying on his old car with more than 200,000 miles, someone gave him a 2012 model with 33,000 miles.

As Taylor left his position at CCC, his wife, Renea Taylor, the church’s arts director and worship leader, was promoted with a raise.

“We started with no money; we had no money; I didn’t ask people to pledge money; and I didn’t ask for lumps of money,” Taylor said. “People just started donating. It’s amazing how much money started coming in. The offerings are amazing on Sunday morning.”

In the past year, Taylor has baptized 13 people. In August, the church dedicated three babies back to Christ.

Organized ministries include an arts team, media team, security team, welcome team, hospitality team and programs for children, women and men.

Taylor is seeking just the right volunteer to work with the older teens and said he has a five-year plan in place for the church that includes staying in Plainfield. He is heartened by the spiritual growth he sees in his people.

“Once you grow spiritually,” Taylor said, “you grow everywhere else.”

St. Joseph’s School marks 90th year in Manhattan The HERALD–NEWS MANHATTAN – Peggy Cunningham Fay graduated from St. Joseph’s Catholic School in 1939. Her connections to both St. Joseph’s Church and the school run deep.

Her mother, Sara Boherty, was raised in Ireland and came to America at the invitation of her uncle, the Rev. Patrick McGee, who served as a pastor of St. Joe’s from 1911 to 1922. It was there that young Sara met her future husband.

The couple’s daughter, Margaret “Peggy” Cunningham, started school in St. Joseph Church. The classrooms of the school were on the first

The one-year project included several proposals, meetings with all groups and fundraising.

That is a perfect mantra for a bridge player, especially a declarer in no-trump.

After counting your top tricks, decide what you need – how many extra winners – and decide where you will get them. You will “exchange” the opponents’ winners while establishing tricks for yourself.

This deal occurred in a social game and highlighted how not to play.

North’s two-club rebid was New Minor Forcing. When South implied 2-5-2-4 distribution, North signed off in three no-trump.

South starts with six top tricks: two diamonds and four clubs.

Normally, one would assume that the diamond queen was onside, but the auction made a diamond lead almost inevitable, whatever West’s holding in the suit.

Declarer should take the first trick in his hand and attack spades by leading low to dummy’s jack.

Here, when that wins, South returns to his hand with a club and leads another spade. With this layout, overtricks pour in.

At the table, South won with dummy’s diamond jack, cashed his club winners, unblocked the diamond ace, played a spade to dummy’s king, took the diamond king (trick eight), and led a heart to the queen, king and ace.

West cashed the spade ace-queen and diamond queen, then led a heart to East’s jack for down one.

Establish winners first; top tricks won’t run away.

Scientists are trying to find new and potentially better biomarkers for prostate cancer. They’re looking for biomarkers that have fewer falsely positive and falsely negative results, and that distinguish between aggressive and non-aggressive prostate cancers. Here are two of the most promising options: • GENETIC TESTS OF PROSTATE TISSUE. Cells in the prostate gland turn cancerous because of changes in their genes. Certain changes in genes lead to aggressive cancers. These genetic changes can be identified in biopsy specimens of the cancer. Such tests do not influence decisions about how the cancer should be treated; they just help distinguish between cancers that should be treated more or less immediately versus those non-aggressive cancers that just need to be closely monitored to make sure they don’t start growing.

• CIRCULATING TUMOR CELLS. Cancer spreads when tumor cells break away, get swept up into the bloodstream and start to grow in other parts of the body. A new “liquid biopsy” uses a simple blood test to measure circulating tumor cells and their telltale markers. This test isn’t yet part of standard care. But it could someday reduce the need for follow-up biopsies and help judge whether treatment is working. As for the PSA test, I think it is worth doing in men who are at increased risk for getting prostate cancer, such as those who have had relatives with the disease.

Dear Dr. K: I keep hearing about problems with the PSA test. Are any new screening tests for prostate cancer in development?

Dear Reader: Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) is a biomarker. Biomarkers are chemicals that can reveal that something abnormal is happening in the body. PSA is a chemical released by cells in the prostate gland. It is released at relatively high levels when prostate cells turn cancerous. However, PSA also is released in non-cancerous prostate conditions.

The PSA test has been used for decades to detect prostate cancer before symptoms begin. However, there are two problems with the test. First, as just mentioned, high PSA levels do not always indicate that there is prostate cancer.

The phrase doctors use to describe this imperfection is that the test result can be “falsely positive.”

Second, the PSA levels measured by the test can sometimes be normal even when a person does have prostate cancer. The phrase doctors use to describe this imperfection is that the test result can be “falsely negative.”

The third problem with the test is that even when it accurately detects prostate cancer, it doesn’t distinguish aggressive cancer from non-aggressive cancer. As I’ve said before, even though it seems odd: Cancer is not always bad for your health. There are types of cancer that can cause no symptoms, that grow slowly (if at all) and that are unlikely to spread.

There are types of cancer that you will never know you had. You will die with these cancers, but you won’t die from them.

If the PSA test detects a prostate cancer that will not grow and spread, then detecting it can lead to invasive diagnostic tests that can have harmful side effects of their own, and to overtreatment of a cancer that will never cause any

ments consist of hot mix asphalt base course removal, stone base preparation, hot mix asphalt resurfacing, curb and gutter removal and replacement, sidewalk removal and replacement, driveway removal and replacement, and other incidental and miscellaneous items of work on approximately 1.73 miles of various Village streets.

Plans, specifications and contract proposals may be obtained thru the office of the Civil Engineer, Village of New Lenox, 1 Veterans Parkway, New Lenox, IL 60451. The office is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Wednesday from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Proposals shall be delivered to the Office of the Civil Engineer of the Village of New Lenox. Electronically transmitted proposals will not be accepted.

A current IDOT Certificate of Eligibility must be presented to obtain proposal forms. The Village of New Lenox reserves the right to reject any and all bids and to waive technicalities in the bidding.
