Joliet City Council OKs increase in IEPA loan

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The City will end up spending $45.5 million – about 10 percent more than its initial engineer’s estimates – on three sewer projects.

The City Council approved the change in how much it will borrow from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency’s Water Pollution Control Loan Program after higher-than-expected bids came back on two of the three projects.

District One Councilman Larry Hug questioned why the city’s initial cost estimates were low on the project, which involves running a combined sewer and storm water tunnel under the DesPlaines River, sewer improvements along Route 6 and a new pumping station and screen filter at the East Side Waste Water Treatment Plant.

“This is a huge project,” City Manager Jim Hock said.

“It’s hard to get an estimate on something that’s not routinely done, like tunnelling under a river.”

The initial overall esti-

mate was about $41.2 million.

Hock pointed out that the city still would save about $1 million in interest over the 20-year life of the loan due to the program’s lower rates.

The city also awarded contracts on all three projects.

The river tunnel contract, originally estimated at $19 million, was awarded to Joseph J. Henderson & Son Inc. for $21.36 million. A $1.6 contract for engineering services on the project was awarded to Hatch Mott MacDonald LLC/ V3 Companies of Illinois.

The waste water treatment plant contract, originally estimated at about $10.7 million, was awarded to Williams Brothers Construction for $11.27 million, plus $422,000 for engineering services to Donohue & Associates.

The Route 6 contract, originally estimated at $7.8 million, was awarded to Steve Speiss Construction for $6.6 million, plus about $297,000 for engineering to Donohue & Associates.

Hock said the agreements require that at least 10 percent of the projects be given to minorities.

In other business, the

council named Scott Street between Jefferson and Cass streets at Rudy Mahalik Way. Councilman Mike Turk said Mahalik was lifelong promoter for the city, along with being “one of the best dancers in Joliet.”

Mahalik was on hand for the presentation, along with his family.

Mahalik’s son, Rudy Mahalik Jr., noted his father was instrumental in bringing the CrimeStoppers program in Joliet in the early 1980s, after seeing it work during a trip to Arizona.

Joliet was reeling from a series of serial murders at the time, Mahalik Jr. noted. Milton Johnson eventually was arrested and convicted for the killings.

“People were afraid,” he said. “People were fearful to go out.”

Mahalik collaborated with then-Councilman Bob Hacker to launch the program.

“Dad was the spark plug that helped make it happen,” Mahalik Jr. said. “He spun it from a negative on the crime spree to a positive about how citizens were taking things into their own hands.”

Plainfield development plan continues to confound

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Residents of Dillman Estates, Dunmoor Estates and the Shenandoah subdivision spoke out against a planned single-family development Tuesday because they say it would significantly lower their property values.

A 16-unit single-family development plan called The Reserve was presented for the second time to the Plainfield Plan Commission on Tuesday.

And for the second time, residents from the nearby subdivisions said the plan didn’t make sense.

The developer also couldn’t answer several questions the Plan Commission put forth. So the plan commission decided

to continue discussion on the development to the next Sept.

16 meeting.

“If we’re going to cut our teeth on new development or construction, I’m not sure why we’re cutting our teeth on half-million dollar homes,” resident Larry Jaderberg said.

The development would create a street east from Heggs Road between 135th Street and 127th Street where Augusta Court is located, extending to Taylor Street and connecting another road north to Skyline Drive. A boulevard would mark the entrance to the street.

About 7.5 acres along that road would be designated for the development along with a dry retention basin. The development would be south of

the Shenandoah neighborhood and north of the Dunmoor Estates and Dillman Estates neighborhoods.

The minimum lot size would be 10,635 square feet and maximum would be 13,500 square feet. However, the lot sizes of Dunmoor Estates and Dillman Estates are 1,000 to 2,000 square feet larger.

The lot sizes and the design of the development are what had neighbors complaining.

While developer Michael Petak agreed to abide by the village’s single-family and 360-degree design standards, he couldn’t offer specifics on how the homes would look, starting at $350,000.

“People get upgrades most of the time,” Petak said, adding that the prices of the homes

would jump to $400,000 or more. Neighboring residents said that was still too low for them, with houses that reach the $600,000 and $700,000 range.

The development doesn’t meet the village’s requirement for low-density residential zoning and it was unclear whether they would have two-car or three-car garages.

Commissioner Dan Seggebruch told the developer’s team they may not be ready for the project.

Petak agreed to work with village staff to incorporate design standards and come up with answers to questions commissioners had about home pricing, lot sizes, the street boulevard and how the development will integrate with surrounding communities.

Guardian Angel Community Services now operating downtown

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Leaders of Will County’s oldest nonprofit agency still are settling into a new location, but they see it as a historic step forward.

Guardian Angel Community Services still is unpacking at its new location, 168 N. Ottawa St. in downtown Joliet, after moving from the building it occupied for close to 90 years at Plainfield Road and Theodore Street. But the family services agency is serving clients at the new offices.

The agency, which was once an orphanage, has grown in the number of programs it offers and clients it serves. Guardian Angel now serves more than 30,000 clients a year.

Moving into a new building in downtown Joliet was exciting for April Balzhiser, the agency’s chief operating officer. Now April and others are working closer to community resources, such as the Will County Courthouse, State’s Attorney’s Office and Metra train station.

“It’s much more convenient for clients to access additional services,” she said.

The agency has grown in the number of services it offers since it began 117 years ago. The Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate, a Joliet religious order, established an orphanage in the late 1890s when they saw need for one in the community.

It was later renamed Guardian Angel Home. The orphanage moved to its location on Plainfield Road and Theodore Street in 1925. The agency became a nonprofit group with its own set of board directors in the early 1970s as it focused on treating emotionally disturbed chil-

Adjusting to the new location The familiar building on Plainfield Road was bought by the University of St. Francis in the spring. USF plans to put its nursing college there.

With months of planning, Guardian Angel Community Services began its move in earnest in July.

Ines Kutlesa, the agency’s chief executive officer, said the moving process was rewarding and historic.

“This has been a labor of love from the start,” she said.

The new location is smaller. The old building had a gym. But the new facility gave the agency the opportunity to design it in a way that would best fit its needs, Kutlesa said.

“We wanted to be able to create a welcoming space for the families we serve,” she said about the new location.

“We were successful in doing that.”

The downtown location is a huge adjustment for Valerie Pastwa, the agency’s marketing and communications specialist. There were many things staff grew accustomed to in the old location, but the new location will be closer for many clients, she said.

“It’s important they have access and walking distance

from services,” Pastwa said.

Agency changes over the years The agency’s services have continued to expand since the 1970s and early 1980s. Kutlesa said Will County is one of the state’s fastest growing counties and the agency is serving more clients.

For instance, the agency’s domestic violence hotline received 56 calls a month 10 years ago and now receives more than 900 calls a month, she said. Since 2000, the agency has seen a 200 percent increase in the number of service hours for its sexual assault program.

All this has meant the agency has needed to spread awareness about domestic violence and the services it offers in response, Kutlesa said.

“I think just in general we are out there reaching the

masses, especially through our sexual assault program, which is doing a phenomenal job, so people feel comfortable coming forward,” she said.

According to its 2013 annual report, the agency receives support from individual donors, organizations and estates. It also receives support from the Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault, United Way of Will County, United Way of Grundy County, U.S. Dept. of Justice and other organizations.

When Pastwa came to the agency six years ago, she worked in its emergency domestic violence program as a caseworker and subsequently worked in other programs.

In her current position, she tries to find support for the agency through fundraising, events and volunteer work.

“It’s really great to come from where I come from working with victims for so long and then being on the donor side and telling people what’s needed,” she said.

Investigation called for into trucker’s waiver

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – The family of one of the victims in the July 21 fatal chain-reaction crash on Interstate 55 is calling for a federal investigation into a vision waiver granted to the truck driver accused of reckless homicide in the collision.

Francisco Espinal-Quiroz, of Leesburg, Indiana, was granted a vision waiver from the federal government that was renewed the day before the crash. The waiver allowed him to drive a commercial truck despite being legally blind in one eye.

That exemption is administered by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

On Tuesday, the family of one of the crash victims called for a federal investigation into the vision exemption program and the circumstances surrounding Espinal-Quiroz’s waiver.

Frank Andreano, the attorney who represents the family of Ulrike Blopleh, a 48-year-old Channahon woman who was one of five people killed, also sent a letter Tuesday to U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger, R-Channahon, requesting the waiver be investigated.

An investigation could look into what factors were considered when determining whether Espinal-Quiroz was safe to

drive and whether the vision exemption program is safe, Andreano said.

“How do they make a determination that a particular driver is safe? There’s vision standards, but they don’t say what it is you have to prove in order to get an exemption,” Andreano said. “There’s no objective testing criteria that the optometrist takes to ascertain whether or not that person actually in fact Francisco can drive a motor vehicle.”

After a 2005 examination, his optometrist, who is unnamed, noted that Espinal-Quiroz “has excellent vision in his left eye,” according to FMCSA documents. “I feel that he has sufficient vision to perform the driving tasks required to operate a commercial vehicle.”

The optometrist also noted that Espinal-Quiroz reported he had 14 years driving experience and that his driving record for the past three years showed “no crashes or convictions” for moving violations in a commercial motor vehicle.

Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles records show Espinal-Quiroz was cited in 2006 for driving a commercial vehicle without a proper license.

Around this time, he was also

cited three times for non-serious violations – once in 2006 and twice in 2005, according to records obtained from the Indiana bureau. Espinal-Quiroz has a history of traffic violations that date back to 1991, including three speeding tickets since 2012.

The most recent batch of FMCSA’s vision exemptions, listed Aug. 29 on the agency’s website, name the individuals requesting vision exemptions and the reasons they are granted.

For decades, highway safety advocacy groups have complained to the FMCSA that the program is unsafe.

Henry Jasny, vice president and general counsel for Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety, said the program is like “playing roulette with public safety.”

All states require that com-

mercial truck drivers have no worse than 20/40 vision in both eyes, Jasny said, but the program allows for exemptions to drivers – even those legally blind in one eye.

“We don’t’ think that the program itself is a good program. The idea of granting drivers exemption from a safety rule on the basis of, ‘Well, we think they’re OK,’ is an ad hoc and not a safe way to run federal standards,” Jasny said.

“We think that if they feel they can change the vision standard and lower it, then they should do that, and they’ve never been able to.”

The scary part, Jasny said, is that a federal investigation “will probably find” that FMCSA “hasn’t violated” any law and that Espinal-Quiroz was properly screened and legally allowed into the program.

It’s unclear whether Espinal-Quiroz’s blindness in one eye caused the accident. Prosecutors have cited several possible factors, including speeding and fatigue.

In the reckless homicide indictment returned last week against Espinal-Quiroz, the Will County State’s Attorney’s office alleged that he had physical conditions that limited his ability to drive safely. He is being held in lieu of a $1 million bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.

Driver in fatal Route 6 crash indicted on reckless homicide

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The driver of a vehicle involved in a fatal car crash on Route 6 that left two people dead has been indicted for reckless homicide, aggravated driving while under the influence and aggravated reckless driving.

Tristan Durov, 18, of Shorewood was indicted by a Grundy County grand jury Tuesday on 23 counts for his involvement in the one-vehi-

cle accident that killed Kendall Forth, 16, of Minooka and James Harris III, 22, of Channahon.

According to the indictment, Durov had a blood alcohol concentration above the legal limit of 0.08 and was under the influence of drugs, or a combination of drugs, while behind the wheel.

On July 21, Durov was driving an SUV east on Route 6 when he lost control near Gun Club Road, according to authorities. The car left the

roadway and went into the south ditch, where it rolled several times into a neighboring field.

The indictment alleges Durov was speeding and driving recklessly at the time of the crash.

The front-seat passenger – a 20-year-old from Minooka – was extracted from the vehicle and suffered major injuries.

Forth and Harris – the two backseat passengers – were ejected from the vehicle. Har-

ris was pronounced dead at the scene, and Forth died the following day at St. Francis Hospital in Peoria.

Durov also was transported from the scene in critical condition and has sustained major injuries. Because of his medical condition, Durov was not arrested or booked into the Grundy County jail, Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said Tuesday.

Durov has agreed to comply with the Secure Contin-

uous Remote Alcohol Monitoring (SCRAM) program and must abstain from alcohol.

As part of SCRAM, Durov is required to wear an alcohol monitoring bracelet.

Durov was indicted on 15 counts for aggravated driving while under the influence, all class 2 felonies; five counts for aggravated driving while under the influence, all class 4 felonies; two counts of reckless homicide; and one count of aggravated reckless driving, a class 4 felony.

Tin Roof is latest downtown restaurant venture

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The manager of Tin Roof, the downtown’s newest restaurant, believes farm fresh food and craft cocktails are just the ticket to attract a lot of cool cats.

Tin Roof, 158 N. Chicago St., formerly Nardi’s on Chicago, opened its doors Aug. 1 with a new menu and a new attitude, Brian Florczak said.

“Downtown Joliet was a booming area 40 years ago, and I don’t know why it can’t be again,” Florczak said. “All it takes is a little art, music and food to take over and reestablish it.”

Tin Roof focuses on local, seasonal fare, Florczak said.

All its produce comes from Channahon, while its meat is produced at farms within 250 miles.

“It’s really nice to be able to offer grass-fed beef and local produce,” Florczak said.

“It’s like you’re giving back to the area.

The restaurant offers various starters, salads, sandwiches and plates. Florczak said his most popular dishes include: • Mahi Tacos, topped with mango pico, cilantro, queso fresco and pickled cabbage; • The Gavel, a sandwich featuring blackened chicken with grilled onions, red peppers, roasted tomatoes and Monterey Jack cheese;

• Farmers Pasta, a blend of sauteed seasonal vegetables with crushed red pepper, basil, garlic, olive oil and Parmesan cheese.

Bacon is a common theme in many Tin Roof dishes, from Deep Fried Bacon, to a BLTAC (a BLT with avocado and cucumber) and a caramelized bacon ice cream.

“I don’t believe any of us can ever have enough bacon,” Florczak said.

The restaurant is Florczak’s first, although he’s worked in the industry for several years. His menu inspiration came from wanting to showcase foods he cooked for his own family and providing items not found in other local restaurants.

“The last thing I wanted to do is open another Italian restaurant, or try to compete with places like Al’s or Truth,” he said.

The restaurant maintains a full bar up front, as it did under previous owners as Nardi’s, Thayer’s 158 North and Barolo’s, with a dining area in back and additional room downstairs. The building fea-

Suspicious car fire under investigation

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Officials believe a fire that destroyed a vehicle Tuesday morning may have been set intentionally.

Joliet Fire Battalion Chief Ron Schroeder said crews were called at 4:26 a.m. to the 400 block of North Center Street after a Chevrolet Tahoe caught fire.

“They arrived to find flames coming from the passenger compartment, but were able to knock [the fire] down quickly,” Schroeder said.

The SUV was parked outside and the fire threatened to spread to a nearby building before being extinguished.

The blaze is considered “suspicious” and an arson investigator is assigned, Schroeder said.

Four arrested in alleged JJC gas theft

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Four people were arrested early Sunday after allegedly stealing from the fuel pumps at Joliet Junior College.

JJC Police Chief Pete Comanda said officers noticed Saturday night someone had cut the locks that secure gas pumps used by vehicles at the main campus, 1215 Houbolt Joaquin L. Conreras Road.

“We kept an eye on the area and came back to find the occupants of two vehicles had filled them and were filling portable Trey A. containers with Hildebrand fuel,” Comanda said.

None of the four suspects are JJC students, according to Comanda.

ELWOOD – Traffic on Route 53 jammed up when a semitrailer rolled over Tuesday afternoon.

State police said the accident happened at 2:23 p.m. while the truck was northbound near Hoff Road. No significant injuries were reported and no other vehicles were involved, according to state police.

University Park man charged with robbery UNIVERSITY PARK – Police say a man held a couple at gunpoint to take their cellphones Saturday.

Chief Ed Bradley said about 11 p.m. the man and woman were getting into a car on Morningside Drive when Terri L. Young approached.

“He came up and stuck a gun in their face and demanded the phones they were carrying,” Bradley said. The victims called police, who found a suspect matching their description a short distance away.

“Officers were able to disarm him and recover the phones he was carrying,” Bradley said.

Young, 19, of the 500 block of Allen Lane, was arrested on charges of armed robbery and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. He is being held in the Will County jail on $250,000 bond.

Lockport man charged with marijuana delivery JOLIET – Police say officers noticed a man banging on a door while carrying marijuana Monday.

Cmdr. Al Roechner said police were on foot patrol about 10:30 p.m. when they saw Jerome C. Abbott, 25, pounding on the door of a residence in the 300 block of Water Street.

“When they asked what he was doing, he turned, threw a baggie on the ground and took off running,” Roechner said.

After a foot chase, Abbott was caught in the 300 block of South Joliet Street.

Roechner said the bag Abbott threw to the ground contained seven smaller packages of marijuana. Abbott, of the 2100 block of Luther Avenue in Lockport, was arrested and booked into the county jail on charges of delivery of marijuana, criminal trespassing and resisting a police officer.

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Romeoville father and son who are accused of beating a man to death with a baseball bat made a brief court appearance Tuesday.

A Will County Sheriff’s deputy led Adam Ballard, 15, into the courtroom after his father, Mark, already had been called before Judge Robert Livas. Wearing shackles and a green jumpsuit like his father’s blue one, the teenager was taken out immediately after proceedings finished to minimize his contact with adult inmates.

Like Mark, 42, Adam Ballard is charged as an adult with first-degree murder in the slaying of Richard Pollack, 55, last month. About 2 a.m. Aug. 10 police were called to a large brawl on the 400 block of Tallman Avenue

where witnesses allegedly saw the Ballards strike Pollack in the head. Pollack was taken to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital where he died an hour later.

The Ballards were taken into custody that same day – giving prosecutors 30 days to indict them or have a hearing to determine why they had been arrested. Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Jim Long requested proceedings be delayed until Friday. The Ballards have not been indicted but another round of grand jury indictments is scheduled

to be returned Wednesday.

Livas granted Long’s motion over the objection of defense attorney Paul Napolski, who is representing both Adam and Mark Ballard. Napolski argued there was no reason not to hold the preliminary hearing Tuesday and told the judge he plans to ask for a hearing to lower their bond amounts.

Mark Ballard is being held on $5 million bond in the county jail and Adam Ballard is being held on $1 million bond in the River Valley Juvenile Detention Facility.

PLAINFIELD – Plainfield police reported making five impaired driving arrests and issuing 155 safety belt citations during an extended Labor Day crackdown.

Police also arrested four people for possession of marijuana, two for possession of drug paraphernalia and five for driving while their licenses were suspended or revoked.

The Plainfield Police Department participated in the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign from Aug. 15 through Monday, when they issued the citations and made arrests.

“This is important to make our roadways safer, get more drunks off road-

ways, and to get more people to wear their seat belts,” Plainfield police Sgt. Eric Munson said.

Police sought people driving impaired, getting them off the roads. Overtime incurred by participating officers was covered through federal traffic safety funds, provided by the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Transportation Safety.

The campaign included paid advertising and more than $1 million in police overtime statewide.

In addition to the arrests, officers issued nine citations for child passenger safety act violations; 28 for people operating uninsured motor vehicles; 12 for speeding; 31 for illegal use of a cellphone; and 32 for other citations.

That has been the battle with Congressman Foster from the get-go.”

Senger’s campaign released several statements in the last couple of weeks saying that Foster “continues to hide out” by not agreeing to open debates.

DOROTHY COOPER-BOOKER Born: Oct. 17, 1940; in Hillhouse, MS Died: Aug. 28, 2014; in Joliet, IL Dorothy Cooper-Booker, age 73, peacefully passed away on Thursday, August 28, 2014.

Dorothy was born on October 17, 1940, in Hillhouse, Mississippi, and relocated to Joliet, in 1954. She was very active in the community. She founded her non-profit organization, First Start Referral Service, where she provided help to first generation college students with admission and financial aid applications, as well as helped others to navigate through the application process for other social services. She was a longtime member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Birdie and AC Cooper; and her daughter, Amorette

Cooper-Luckey.

She is survived by her husband, William Booker; two sons, Rodney (Addie) Cooper and Michael (Michelle) Cooper; four daughters, Tina (Ken) Cartwright, Regina (Ben) McCall, Kizzy (Pedro) Foster, and Shalonda Booker; one stepson, James Bullens; one stepdaughter, Trisha Patterson; four brothers, James Cooper, Jerry Cooper, Gregory Cooper and Carl (Evelyn) Lee; two sisters, Juiet (Emmitt) Craig and Jacqueline Cooper; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Patricia “Pat” Austin, 79, of Wilmington, IL, passed away at home on August 27, 2014, (her birthday) with her son and daughter at her side. She had been in and out of the hospital for several weeks. Hospice became involved shortly before she died.

Pat was born on August 27, 1935, in Raleigh, IL, the daughter of Birtus and Miona Bruce. She and her family moved to Wilmington, IL in 1941 where she attended school from second grade through high school.

She attended one year of college at Belmont in Nashville, TN with her cousin, Ona Maloney. She was the former wife of the late Jack Austin.

She is survived by her son, Timothy Austin; her daughter, Marisue Austin; her grandson, Timothy Skaggs (Kristina); great-grandson, Jonathan; great-granddaughter, Alexandra;

her sister-in-law, Diane Bruce (late Warren); and cousins, Ona Maloney (Charles), Roma Lee Wilson (late Bobbie Jean), Judy Mayberry (late Gordon)and Marilee Hardin (David), Susan Hess (Jerry), Terry Irvin (Dottie), Karen Spikes and hosts of others.. She was a loving big sister to her younger brother.

Pat worked for many years as a secretary at the Joliet Arsenal before the Arsenal moved to the Quad Cities area. She also worked at Hickory Creek Grocery Store and 1st National Bank of Wilmington. She faithfully attended the Island City Baptist Church in Wilmington until health issues prevented her. She had a beautiful voice and sang in the choir for many years and was often called upon to sing solos.

Her parents, Birtus and Miona Bruce and brother, Warren Bruce, preceded her in death.

A memorial service will be held at the Island City Baptist Church in Wilmington, IL on Saturday, September 6th at 4:00 p.m.

James George “Jim” Hickey, age 81, late of Lockport, passed away August 30, 2014, at Silver Cross Hospital. Born in Chicago, IL. James was a member of Bricklayers Local 21 for 50 years, retiring in 1994. He was a member of Sertoma.

Preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Monica (Darrah); a daughter, Kathy Mallet; and by two sisters, Loraine Szymankowsky and Dolores Spinney Survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Shirley (Lennon); son, James Hickey; daughters, Margaret (Anson) Fairtrace and Laura (Greg) Hall; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren; brothers, Bill, George, Walter, Thomas Hickey; and sisters, Colleen McLaughlin, and Mary Cremin. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Born in Joliet on March 18, 1922, to the late Jacob and Katherine (nee Kufner) Podobnik, she remained a lifelong Joliet resident.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband of 47 years, John “Yack” Gregorash; brothers, Robert, Anthony and Rudolph Podobnik; sisters, Mary Podobnik, Catherine (George) Turk, Frances (Frank) Legan, and Pauline (Nick) Chorak.

Survived by her loving and devoted daughter, Joleen (William) Morrow; one sister, Dorothy (the late Don) Hiller; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Josephine was a graduate of Joliet Township High School and worked for a number of years at the American Can Company in Rockdale. She enjoyed her career there and retired when she started a family. She often spoke and shared stories about the great times she had while working and the wonderful friendships she made during her years there.

Josephine was an excellent baker and was often asked to make her special potica for holidays and other family events. She was a lover of music, particularly live music, which in later years brought her great joy.

Josephine was a lifelong parishioner at St. Mary Nativity Church in Joliet where she was active in the Mother’s Club. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Cantigny Post #367.

A celebration of Josephine’s life will begin on Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road, Joliet with a visitation from 9 a.m. until the time of service to be held in the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Mary Nativity Cemetery in Crest Hill.

DANIEL R. LIETKE Daniel R. Lietke, “Daniel Son”, age 31, of Lockport, passed away much too soon on Tuesday, August, 26, 2014. He was born in Joliet and was a lifelong Lockport resident.

Daniel was a very devoted father, to his three cherished children, son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and dear friend. He loved to cook and fish, was a very hard worker, loved fixing his children’s bikes and cherished playing outside with his children. Daniel had a heart bigger than gold and will be missed by all who knew him and loved him.

MARY E. MODLIN Born: Feb. 22, 1947; in Joliet, IL Died: Aug. 31, 2014; in Maywood, IL Mary E. “Betty” Modlin (nee Trubich), age 67, born February 22, 1947, died August 31, 2014. Betty went to her heavenly eternal home peacefully at Loyola Medical Center, Maywood, IL. Born in Joliet, IL, a daughter of John R. Trubich Sr. and Gladys E. Educated at St. Paul school and St. Francis Academy, Joliet, IL. She worked in the medical and dental field for many years in her young life. She also for many years shared

in cooking at the former “Shortleys Corner” with her best friend Denise Kolenc. Betty also enjoyed 12 years of delighting us all in being our “Avon Lady”.

Her most cherished time in her life was raising her own family, and sharing herself with so many of her family and friends as our daycare sitter. Her home was open for 30 years each day nurturing her nephews, nieces, great nieces, great nephews, grand daughter and countless friends children. “Auntie Bee” was the best babysitter ever. She is so heartfully missed by everyone that her sweet heart touched. Her vibrant sense of humor, love, joy and giving ways will carry on forever in all our hearts.

Survived by her beloved husband and soulmate Bill D. Molin for 40 years. Two loving daughters, Kimberly Modlin of Plainfield, IL, and Sally Eckert; and son-in-law, Mark Eckert of Crest Hill, IL. STATE BRIEFS STREATOR – LaSalle County authorities said at least one person has died after a house explosion in Streator.

The LaSalle County Coroner’s Office confirmed the death following the explosion late Monday. It didn’t provide details on the person’s age or gender.

Police and fire officials declined to provide details. It’s unclear what caused the blast.

Neighbors say they felt and

heard the explosion around 11:30 p.m. Monday. They say a mother and son lived in the home.

The home was destroyed and surrounding houses were damaged.

15-year-old boy drowns in Kankakee River KANKAKEE – The Kankakee County coroner said a 15-yearold has drowned in the Kankakee River.

Coroner Bob Gessner said Jayden Irby of Chicago Heights was pronounced dead Sunday evening. Illinois State Police say crews pulled the boy from about 4 feet of water about 85 feet from the south shore of the river in Aroma Park. The site is near the Point Grove Campground.

Illinois State Police are investigating. Aroma Park is about 60 miles south of downtown Chicago in Kankakee County.

Born in Lockport on January 19, 1925, he was a lifelong Joliet resident. A United States WWII Army Veteran, serving in the European African and Middle Eastern Theatres. He served with the Third Army under General Patton in the Field Artillery 284th Battalion in Germany and France. Recipient of

the Purple Heart and the Presidential Citation. After the war, he was reassigned to Military MP’s in Brandenburg, Germany.

He attended Joliet Township High School. Bob was employed in the security/safety department for 30 years at Caterpillar in Aurora, retiring July 1, 1987. He was an avid Cubs fan.

Preceded in death by his wife, Helen L. (Robinson) (nee Stephens) Wise (1999); his parents, Thomas H. and Marjorie L. (nee Landon) Wise; and one stepdaughter, Dianna Clausen.

Survived by his wife, Evelyn A. (Alberico) Wise; children, Irene (Bruce) Albers of Morris, Robert J. (Sue) Wise of Sandwich, Denise (Jack) Spreitzer of Bellingham, WA, Sharlene (George) Thomas of Shorewood and Jon P. Wise of Naperville; stepchildren, Ronald (Linda) Robinson and Wayne (Judy) Alberico, all of Joliet; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Jeanne M. (late Leon E. “Bud”) Hicks of Joliet; and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Fumigation must be an ongoing task More than five years ago, when Illinois was embroiled in the Gov. Rod Blagojevich impeachment process, Lt. Gov. Pat Quinn boiled his solution to the corruption scandal down to one word: fumigate.

“We have to fumigate state government,” Quinn told a Chicago civic luncheon in late 2008.

“We need to fumigate state government,” Quinn told reporters on a different occasion.

And, after Blagojevich was booted and Quinn took office in late January 2009, the word popped up again.

“We’re going to start to fumigate state government from top to bottom to make sure it has no corruption,” Quinn said at a Capitol news conference.

The dictionary says that fumigate means to apply the fumes of certain chemicals to an area to disinfect it or to rid it of vermin. You know – as in how the pest-control man walks the hallways, rooms and exteriors of a building, spraying to kill the bugs.

The word came to mind as more details broke about political hiring in the Quinn administration, specifically the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The Office of the Executive Inspector General issued an investigative report last week stating that anti-patronage hiring rules were circumvented at IDOT over the past decade. In all, 255 people were improperly hired to mid-level “staff assistant” positions.

And the report stated the process accelerated in 2010 and 2011 – after Quinn took office.

Any administration is allowed to hire political cronies when jobs involve policymaking or confidential information. But the jobs filled at IDOT were reclassified to make them appear to be exempt from normal hiring rules, even though the duties for some jobs involved only mowing lawns and answering phones.

Quinn may be off the hook, because the report stated no evidence was found that he knew of the hiring shenanigans. IDOT’s acting secretary, Erica Borggren, announced the layoff of 58 remaining workers hired as staff assistants, and that the job title would be discontinued.

But IDOT’s former secretary, Ann Schneider, who resigned in June, said the “vast majority” of candidates that IDOT hired were recommended by Quinn’s office, and she felt pressured to hire them.

That’s a natural reaction. How many subordinates, when asked by the boss to take a particular action, say no?

Consumers lose in taxi regulation A while back, I took a cab to Chicago’s Navy Pier and attempted to pay for my ride with a credit card.

My effort was greeted with a torrent of obscenities.

The driver didn’t want to take my card, despite a placard of regulations in the cab that said he must do so. When I pointed out the stack of credit card carbons on his dashboard, he hollered even louder.

It seems some drivers want the taxicab business to be strictly cash.

In the last year or so, an alternative to cabs came on the scene. It’s called Uber Folks can use an app on their cellphone to get a ride. No cash changes hands. It’s all done online.

The drivers for Uber and its competitor, Lyft, have been

But the competition had the owners of some big-time Chicago cab companies hopping mad.

The firms operate what economists call an oligopoly, when a handful of big businesses control the market.

In June, the median price for a Chicago taxi medallion was $339,625. There aren’t too many cab drivers who can fork over that kind of dough. So these big taxi outfits buy the medallions and rent them out to drivers for

a portion of the day.

The medallions are issued

by Chicago City Hall.

The bureaucrats like it because it keeps money pouring in to city coffers. The cab companies like the system because they can continue to control the market. And the politicians like it because they get campaign contributions from the cab companies.

That’s crony capitalism at its worst.

The group that isn’t being looked after in this arrangement is the consumer. Consumers suffer because they have to pay inflated prices.

And even though the industry is regulated, service can be – as my experience shows – pretty lousy.

So what did the taxi company fat cats do when they found out they might have to really compete? They started hiring Springfield lobbyists left and right. And they tried to force onerous regulations on Uber and Lyft.

The measure passed with the help of a coalition

To his credit, Gov. Pat Quinn vetoed the measure this past week. He cited the “home rule” powers of cities such as Chicago as a reason.

Quinn said: “I am vetoing this legislation because it would have mandated a onesize-fits-all approach to a service that is best regulated at the local level.”

Quinn and his staff should simply stop recommending candidates for jobs at IDOT or anywhere else in state government.

That would relieve the

pressure on various departments to hire certain people because the governor recommended them. Merit alone should be the deciding factor.

Perhaps Quinn could have avoided the whole IDOT mess if he had done a better job “fumigating” state government five years ago.

He also should learn from the pest-control man. You can’t fumigate just once and forget it. You’ve got to spray on a regular basis to keep those annoying bugs from coming back.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NAPERVILLE – Plainfield South’s girls cross country team is upbeat about how it will do this season, and that optimism grew Tuesday.

That’s because the Cougars claimed top honors in Plainfield North’s Tiger Conditioner Relays at Commissioners Park.

The Hokum Karem relay featured pairs of runners alternating miles over the four-mile course, with the top three finishers from each school accounting for their team’s points.

South won with 13 points after having the third-, fourthand sixth-place finishers. The hosts and Rosary tied with 23 points, but North claimed second thanks to a tiebreaker. Providence (42), Hinsdale South (50), Joliet Catholic (51) and Plainfield East (52) also competed.

“This is a tremendous confidence-booster for us moving forward, and it’s a great building block for the rest of the season,” Cougars coach Dan Shuman said. “We prepared very hard over the summer, and to see it pay off with the girls doing well and everyone running hard is a great reward. This was our first meet, and it’s something that we can build on.”

Leading the way for South was the third-place team of Daijah Brown and returning state qualifier Lexi Grigg, the fourth-place squad of Chelsea Hernandez and Greta Carlberg and the sixth-place pairing of Stephanie Cruz and Jozelyn Macias.

“It was a cool experience, especially working with a new teammate in Daijah, who’s a freshman,” Grigg said. “This is probably the biggest team that we’ve had in the past few years, with the most freshmen. We’ve been working really hard since the beginning of summer, and this shows it.

It’s exciting to see how good we might be this year.”

type of passion that works together very well. We all have a lot of motivation, we’re all very competitive, and we’re a hard-working team.”

A squad from Rosary won the girls race; North’s pairing of Miranda Bakker and Rachael Lau, who was an all-

stater last season, claimed second place in the event.

Also for the Tigers, Sofi Chartrand and Megan Patton were 10th, while Valarie Som and Brittany Drag finished 11th.

Providence’s top performers were Andrea Zecca and Rebecca Thompkins, who took eighth, and Kirsten Schultz and Kelly Schultz, who placed ninth.

For JCA, Kelly Testin and Madeline Blotnik were 13th, and Kennedy Weigt and Emma Ehrsam took 14th. Plainfield

East’s Marissa Zajac and Vivian Medrano placed 15th.

In the six-mile boys competition, highly regarded Neuqua Valley had the threethrough-fifth finishers and had seven of the top 11 placers to easily capture the title with 12 points.

Plainfield North was second with 26 points, while Bolingbrook edged Hinsdale South 48-50 for third place. Romeoville (57), Providence (64) and Plainfield East (98) were next.

The top pairing in the field was a squad from Hinsdale South.

The host Tigers were paced by the second-place team of Jack Sebok and Tanner Thurman, the ninth-place squad of Adam Bruyere and Ben Otstott, and the 15th-place pairing of Daniel Gibson and Tim Schrank.

“Neuqua is one of the best teams in the state, so it’s good for our guys to experience racing against them,” North coach Andy Derks said.

“We’ve made huge strides from last year. We’ve got a good core group of juniors and seniors who have bought into what we’ve challenged them.

And we’ve got two great new coaches who have motivated the team.”

Bolingbrook’s top finishers were Bjorn Shroda and Johnathon Cook, who took eighth place. Romeoville was led by Mike Samuelson and Luis Loza, who placed 14th.

Providence received a 12th-place effort from Mike Higgins and Michael Davis, and a 13th-place showing from Mike Grossmayer and Mitch Sharkey.

“I knew that he had a bright future in coaching when he went to Weber State,” said Hall, who like Mike Zimmer is an Illinois State graduate. “He

was the defensive backs coach and became defensive coordinator. He did a good job there, and he went to Washington State.”

He made his move to the NFL in 1994 when he joined the Cowboys, and he coached defensive backs until the 1999 season.

In 2000, he became Dallas’ defensive coordinator, a position held through the 2006 campaign.

During his years in Dallas, the

Cowboys ranked in the top five in NFL scoring defense six times, and the 1995 squad beat Pittsburgh in Super Bowl XXX. In that stretch, he coached under Barry Switzer, Chan Gailey, Dave Campo and Bill Parcells.

After a year as Atlanta’s defensive coordinator in 2007, Zimmer headed to Cincinnati, where he joined Marvin Lewis’ staff as the Bengals defensive coordinator.

After rarely being in the NFL’s top10 defensive rankings, the Bengals finished in that category four times during his final five years on the job.

He won the Halas Award in 2009 as the individual who overcame the most adversity to succeed after producing another fine defense during a season in which his wife of 27 years, Vikki, suddenly passed away.

Hall, who still meets up with Bill Zimmer each spring in Florida, knows how much Mike’s hiring as the Vikings coach means to his father.

“Mike’s dad meant a lot to a lot of different people,” Hall said. “He believed that you take what you have, coach them up and stay positive, and Mike picked up a lot of that from him.

“Bill was a really tough guy, but he also was a great mentor to me. He wants to see Mike coach this year; and if there’s anyone I know that will make sure to get that done, it’s Bill.”

When you think about defense in the National Football League, you think about coaches such as Mike Zimmer.

The new head coach of the Minnesota Vikings has excelled as a defensive coordinator for 14 years in the NFL and has had a hand in coaching defense for 20 seasons.

Add to that a successful 15-year stint coaching defense in college, and you see why many Vikings fans were so pleased when Zimmer become their new head coach.

Various outstanding football coaches have been influential during Zimmer’s 35-year coaching career. In many ways, it’s like a who’s who of some of the top minds in the game.

One man who has been fascinated watching Mike Zimmer’s emergence as one of the NFL’s top defensive coaches is Jim Hall, the longtime Lockport baseball and football coach who got his start in the business under Mike’s dad, Bill, some 40 years ago.

While Hall didn’t get to see Mike play during his Porter career, he has been able to watch his rise through the coaching ranks and thus is both proud and pleased that the 1974 LTHS graduate finally got his shot at an NFL head coaching position.

“This is outstanding for Mike,” said Hall, who visited with the Vikings coach during a recent trip to Minnesota. “I’ve followed him since he was at Illinois State and then started coaching at Missouri before going to Weber State and Washington State.

Then he was with the Cowboys and the Falcons for a year before going to the Bengals.

“I couldn’t be happier for Mike and his parents, Bill and Ann. I had the pleasure of inducting Bill and Mike into the Lockport sports hall of fame.

Mike is so well-respected in the game and has done everything that has been required of him. He’s been successful everywhere that he’s been. He’s a great coach who’s tough when he has to be.”

After an injury prematurely ended his football playing days at Illinois State, Mike Zimmer began his coaching career right away, assisting linebackers coach Ted Schmitz at ISU before joining Warren Powers’ staff at Missouri, where he was an assistant from 1979 to 1980.

Fans all summer at Silver Cross Field have enjoyed seeing the guy wearing uniform No. 4, smiling and greeting them before games outside the main gate.

“It’s a good way to interact with fans,” Casper said before Tuesday’s game against Gateway, the opener of the season-ending three-game series. “If they get to know you, they’re more likely to cheer for you.”

Casper went 2 for 4 with two walks Tuesday as the Slammers rallied from a 4-0

deficit to beat Gateway, 17-5.

Casper drove in two runs and scored three.

He was named over the weekend as the winner of the Frontier League’s Fran Riordan Citizenship Award.

“It’s definitely an honor,” Casper said. “They give it to one guy, and they gave it to me. I don’t feel I did anything over the top. I just do what I do every day. They (Slammers) gave me the opportunity.”

Slammers manager Jeff Isom had Casper at Lake Erie last season and relayed a touching story.

“Max does a lot behind the scenes,” Isom said. “There was a grandmother whose grandson, maybe 10 years old, had cancer. Max drove himself there, an hour and a half away, and brought him some

Lake Erie Crushers’ stuff. It made the kid’s day.

“Later that same day, Jim Tressel, the old Ohio State football coach, visited the kid.

Among his off-field endeavors, Casper recently visited a camp for foster children located near Newark, where he played softball with the kids.

He has visited several area YMCAs and hospitals.

“It’s a great thing for Max and the organization,” Slammers general manager Chris Franklin said of the award.

“Whether it’s parades or read-

ing books to kids, he’s always the first one to say yes. I’m just really proud of him.”

Isom said he brought Casper to Joliet “to hit .250 and be one of the best defensive players in the league, and he has done that.

With the open roster spot, the Bears re-signed veteran cornerback Kelvin Hayden.

Wilson, who spent all offseason as the Bears’ No. 3 receiver, fractured his clavicle

in practice Aug. 4. He is eligible to begin practicing after Week 6 (Oct. 14) and can play after Week 8.

The Bears have a bye in Week 9, so the first game Wilson can play is Nov. 9, the Sunday night game in Green Bay against the Packers.

During an online chat with fans on ChicagoBears. com, general manager Phil Emery said: “The bottom line

is that Marquess is a player who has an exciting future with the Bears, and one way or another he will remain with the team.”

By using the IR with designation to return tag on Wilson, the Bears cannot use it for any other player who gets hurt this season.

Hayden, 31, was one of the surprising cuts Saturday after he joined 39 other Bears

in sitting out the preseason finale. The Illinois alum and Hubbard High School product missed all of 2013 with a torn hamstring.

In 2012, Hayden had 37 tackles, five passes defensed and one interception. He will enter the season likely as the Bears’ No. 4 corner who can play in the slot, and he might be an option on special teams as well.

For team, it’s now for real

WHAT TO WATCH

There was an air about Halas Hall on Labor Day morning. The feeling was thick on the walk from the parking lot to the media room, on the practice fields and in the locker room.

It screamed, “Now it’s all for real.”

Bears coach Marc Trestman greeted the media after practice, starting by saying, “I guess it’s still morning. Good morning,” and then going on to explain: “We started today by welcoming the team back, the 53 plus the practice squad, 29 new players from last year on the 53, so that was eye opening to the guys.”

Was the coach unsure of the day part because he’d spent the weekend without sleep trying to cut down to 53 and then add back his 10-man practice squad?

I have to confess while I already had studied the roster Saturday night and Sunday after the final cuts, it hadn’t even occurred to me that 55 percent of this team was new since Aaron Rodgers found Randall Cobb all alone in the end zone in December.

If it’s possible, Trestman seemed both exhausted and invigorated, but probably a bit more in need of sleep than sleeping pills.

Although the starting offense returns intact from 2013, receiver Marquess Wilson and tight end Dante Rosario are the only returning backups.

This offense features two new quarterbacks, three new running backs, three new receivers, one new tight end and three new offensive linemen.

What is troubling about this edition of the Bears is that four days before the first game, there still are so many unanswered questions.

Asked who his starting safeties are, Trestman replied, “You know I think we’re going to still wait and see.

We’ve been rotating the guys around, and we’ll talk more about that on Wednesday.

We’ve got four guys we’ve been rotating around, and Chris [Conte] got work today, so I’d like to get another day of practice.”

Trestman talked about the improvement he and his coaches believe they have

seen in McClellin and Bostic in practice while acknowledging there still is work to do.

When asked about the “trepidation” surrounding his defense, Trestman was quick to point out he didn’t share that feeling, drew a laugh when he said “with any word that’s more than three syllables, I’m out of luck,” and went on to admit they have yet to jell as a unit on the field but that he believes the talent level is there and they just have to work harder every day to get better.

Trestman went through the preseason and training camp last year with an air of confidence about his offense that many struggled to understand based on the apparent holes in it, particularly on the offensive line.

It seems he knew something we didn’t, as that all turned out pretty well.

Does he know something about this year’s defense no one else does? Or is he just doing the best he can with the cards he’s been dealt?

Trestman loves deflecting questions from the media by calling them hypothetical and explaining he won’t deal in hypotheticals.

There are no more hypotheticals now. Sunday against Buffalo it’s all for real, and the feeling I got in the Bears’ locker room Monday is they’re as anxious to find out what’s going to happen as we are.

JJC to host second ‘Farm to Fork’ dinner featuring food from local growers

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – There’s a reason why the menu for Joliet Junior College’s second “Farm to Fork Market and Dinner” seems a little vague, said Chef Michael McGreal.

When working with local, fresh ingredients, it’s almost impossible to know exactly what ingredients will be accessible until close to the event – possibly even the day of the event, said McGreal, who chairs the JJC culinary arts/ hospitality management department.

Of course, he added, this challenges the skills and flexibility of both the chefs and students in a good, learning-experience way.

“Our fish will be caught that morning to be as fresh as possible. Our produce will be picked by local farmers that morning,” McGreal said. “You can’t say, ‘I want 10 pounds of this variety of lettuce’ when you don’t know what will be available. Tomato farms don’t know which varieties will be ripe.”

Substituting an outdoor gourmet sit-down dinner in September for the traditional Epicurean in November was a gamble when JJC’s culinary arts department hosted the first one last year, McGreal said.

At the appetizer-only Epicurean, everything served was upscale, and nothing was plated, McGreal said. Seating was limited to 100 chairs, but the event attracted 300 people.

“We’d have people standing around the whole night holding their wine glasses and plates of food,” McGreal said.

McGreal had two options: Cut ticket sales by half – less attendance would equal more room for chairs – or move to a larger venue and host a bigger event.

ADVICE Husband against wife’s parade in the nude Dear Abby: My wife walks around our house nude or topless with the shades open, and anybody walking outside can see in. Recently she did this while some painting contractors were working around our house. I have begged her not to, to no avail.

You might point out to her that parading around that way could be considered disrespectful to the workers she’s exposed herself to. My 16-month-old grandnephew was walking on a beach in Carmel, California, with his mom and dad when he suffered burns to his feet from walking across sand beneath which were hot coals. It will take at least three weeks for this dear baby’s feet to heal from those burns.

People don’t realize that covering the coals with sand hides them and keeps them hot for up to 24 hours! Beach fires must be treated differently from those in a forest, where they should be covered with dirt because of the surrounding trees. – Beach

Dear B.E.: I’m printing your letter not only as a warning to beachgoers who might be using fire pits, but also to the parents of small children because hot buried coals can be a hidden danger to their little ones. Because the coals cannot be seen, children sometimes confuse fire pits ringed by rocks with “sandboxes,” and the results can be tragic.

According to the University of California Irvine’s Regional Burn Center, “coals should be extinguished by drenching them with water, waiting five minutes and drenching them AGAIN.” When water isn’t available, the coals should simply be allowed to burn out.

Good news in advances in immunotherapy Dear Doctor K: I’ve heard the term “immunotherapy” used by people who are discussing treatments for cancer and arthritis.

What is immunotherapy?

Dear Reader: Immunotherapy refers to treatments that work by enhancing or suppressing the body’s own immune system.

In some diseases – cancer, for example – the immune system appears ineffective in eliminating the “foreign” cancer cells.

Immunotherapy is an attempt to strengthen the immune system in its fight against the cancer.

In some diseases caused by viruses, not enough of the body’s own natural anti-viral molecules (like the interferons) are produced by the body.

In still other diseases – autoimmune diseases, for example – the disease is caused by an immune system attack against the body’s own healthy tissues. In this case, immunotherapy is an attempt to quiet down the overactive immune system.

Immunotherapy for cancer has recently had some dramatic successes in treating kidney cancer, skin cancer (particularly deadly melanoma), certain types of leukemia and lymphoma and certain types of breast cancer.

Your immune system has some natural capacity to recognize and destroy cancer cells.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff The problem is that it’s usually not strong enough to do this effectively. The immune system recognizes cancer cells because such cells have unique proteins (antigens) on their outer surface.

Antibodies – proteins produced by the immune system – recognize these antigens and tag the cancer cells as foreign.

Immunotherapy strengthens the immune response in several different ways. For example, it can: • Recruit more immune system cells to attack a tumor.

• Make cancer cells more vulnerable to an attack by the immune system.

• Change the way cancer cells grow.

• Coax cancer cells into behaving more like normal cells.

• Neutralize ways that cancer cells are able to hide from the immune system.

A good example of immunotherapy against viral diseases is the use of interferons produced in a laboratory against serious chronic viral infections, such as hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Immunotherapy against in-

flammatory autoimmune diseases also is at a more mature stage than for cancer. This is particularly true for rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and psoriasis. In each of these diseases, certain molecules made by the immune system (called cytokines) orchestrate much of the damage done by the immune system. New drugs (called “cytokine-blockers” or “biologics”) can dramatically “cool off” the destructive immune attack.

One of the most successful forms of immunotherapy involves monoclonal antibodies. These laboratory-created antibodies precisely target particular antigens on the surfaces of particular cells.

When they latch onto their target, they can directly or indirectly destroy the cell carrying the target on its surface.

There also are entirely new and different forms of immunotherapy under development, some with enormous potential.

After several decades of work, immunotherapy finally seems to be on the verge of providing valuable treatments for human diseases.

We went to a party in the summer, and she met a guy there and started dating him. I don’t know what she sees in him because he is a loud mouth and very arrogant. But she seemed happy at first, and I assumed they got along pretty well.

Dear Nameless: In the booklet offered by Liz Claiborne, “What You Need to Know About Dating Violence,” dating violence isn’t defined as an argument every once in a while. It’s defined as a pattern of violent behavior that someone uses against a girlfriend or a boyfriend. Abuse can cause injury, but it doesn’t have to be physical. It can involve verbal and emotional abuse, constant insults, isolation from friends and family, name calling and controlling.

Dating violence can happen to anyone at any age, no matter what race or religion they are.

Most violence in a relationship takes place when the couple is alone. You might not see dramatic warning signs

3. She apologizes for his behavior and makes excuses for him.

4. She cancels plans at the last minute for reasons that sound untrue.

5. He’s always checking up on her, calling or texting her and demanding to know where she has been and who she has been with.

6. You’ve seen him lose his temper when he’s mad.

7. She seems worried about upsetting him or making him angry.

8. She is giving up things that used to be important to her, such as spending time with friends or other activities.

9. Her weight, appearance or grades have changed dramatically.

These could be signs of depression, which could indicate abuse.

10. She has injuries she can’t explain, or the explanations she gives don’t make sense.

She has a stake in the cause, but she’s keen for a change and it’s that motivation that drives her to conceal her gender and take up arms against the Confederacy. Constance becomes Ash Thompson who then becomes Gallant Ash after an act of gallantry witnessed by fellow soldiers. Author Laird Hunt has created a heroic, intrepid warrior with superlative skills as a sharpshooter and a survivor.

But this is not a war novel about a woman trying to pass as a man. Ash’s identity is not the central issue, though it’s certainly the underlying premise for this book. And Ash’s struggles are not gender-based. Ash is a complex, mysterious character we never entirely trust even though she’s speaking to us directly and candidly throughout “Neverhome.” We wonder: What aren’t we seeing? What is she withholding?

Ash passes easily for a man, trains with other enlistees until deemed battle ready at which time they all march South to battle. She has a running dialogue with her dead mother. “I won’t run,” she vows. There is something about fear that Ash must test and investigate.

Among the most interesting aspects of this spare, lovely novel is the beautiful relationship Ash develops with her colonel and commanding officer.

It’s clear he sees more of Ash than most have taken the time to see, and he enjoys conversing with her. Some vilify Ash, perhaps because of her bravery, seeming good luck in battle and her wits. False accusations limit her advancement.

Ash’s adventure turns horrible and harrowing when bounty hunters kidnap her and a couple of other soldiers.

An adroit chameleon and, by now, accustomed to killing, she escapes and eventually finds her way back to her company.

The savage war breaks everyone down eventually. The colonel and his handsome cousin/brother are no exception, and neither is Ash. Injured and left for dead after yet another round of carnage, she frees herself from under a fallen tree trunk and, half dead, finds shelter and a return to health in the home of a nurse who takes a fancy to her. When Ash makes plans to leave and head home, the nurse betrays her and Ash is commit-

The real story, however, is between the lines of the narrative Ash delivers so convincingly. Ash has something to prove that’s greater even than her powerful love for Bartholomew. We learn about her mother’s death and find that, in the end, there are limits most human beings cannot surmount.
