Man killed in shooting late Sunday

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet man died after being shot in a car Sunday night.

Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said police were called at 11:30 p.m. when shots were fired in the 300 block of Union Street.

“They arrived to find a parked car had been struck multiple times and a victim

in the passenger seat,” Benton said.

Duntell L. Neal Jr., 20, was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 2:53 a.m. Monday, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said Neal lived at the house the car was parked in front of.

Will County Sheriff’s Of-

fice spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said steps were being taken Monday afternoon to tell Duntell L. Neal Sr., 42, of his son’s death. Neal Sr. has been in the Will County jail since Aug. 27 on charges he sold cocaine to agents of the Cooperative Police Assistance Team.

“Typically, the Will County Center for Community Concerns informs us, and if it’s a close relative, the jail

staff has a deacon sit with them and inform them,” Hoffmeyer said.

Roechner said Monday detectives conducted interviews, but had not identified any suspects.

Marijuana dealer made wrong turn in New Lenox

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Police say a Markham man was carrying guns and marijuana when he was pulled over last week.

Deputy Chief Robert Pawlisz said an officer was on patrol at 1:07 a.m. Friday when he saw a 2009 Chevrolet Impala disobey the traffic light at Cedar Road and Joliet High-

way. Pawlisz said the officer had the Impala pull over and “could detect the odor of cannabis emitting from the vehi- Alejandro Corona cle.”

Alejandro Corona, 20, of the 3500 block of Magnolia Drive in Markham was not carrying any pas-

sengers, but did have a backpack on the passenger’s seat, Pawlisz said. Pawlisz said police searched the backpack to find more than 100 grams of marijuana and two .22-caliber handguns inside.

Pawlisz said Corona does not have a firearm owner’s identification card and it was not known where he got the guns.

With transportation funding uncertainty at the federal and state level, Walsh Sr. said it’s important to get the opinion of residents to help narrow down projects.

There’s only so much money to go around with competing needs, he said.

“There’s a lot of people out there. We’ve got a lot of residents who all want different things,” Walsh Sr. said.

“We’re asking your opinion.

Joliet neighborhood takes pride in improved Forest Park

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Forest Park residents want their neighborhood back, and they started with the park.

The sprawling, 12-acre park that gives the community its name has been a hidden, unpolished gem for decades in an area where gang crimes get more attention than the treelined streets that create charm in a troubled neighborhood.

But the Joliet Park District, spurred on by community leaders, has polished up the park for the past two years, adding a walking trail, renovated playground, nearly complete basketball court, rebuilt baseball field, soccer field and more.

“The focal point of putting this park together is getting this community together,” Garland Mays, president of the Forest Park Neighborhood Council, said last week on an afternoon when the sun was shining. “We’ve got kids in the park playing. We’ve got families in the park. We have people walking the trail. People are taking pride in the park.”

It was a moment in contrast to an evening meeting just three days earlier when the council got together to begin formulating an action plan in response to a recent outbreak of shootings, including two murders, at the area’s Fairview Homes housing complex.

“We have our issues, but we are dealing with our issues,” Mays said.

The council is making plans to knock on doors at Fairview and invite people to a meeting aimed at getting control of crime in the neighborhood.

In the meantime, the park improvements are making an impression.

“Everyone’s going to come together,” Holloman said.

“There’s going to be more activity here.”

The park had been a big gathering place in past decades.

But around the 1970s, residents said, it began to fall into disrepair, and people stopped coming.

“It had two baseball fields,” said Joe Davis, a longtime resident who runs a barber shop out of his Forest Park home.

The improvements have been funded with district money and company contributions, Burich said. Residents, too, have pitched in to provide labor in the building of the halfmile trail.

A pavilion will be built again – either this fall or in the spring, said Larry Burich, director of planning for the Joliet Park District.

‘Rejuvenating a community’

The revived park has become a source of pride not only for the community but for the park district, too.

“It’s one of the best parks.”

Burich said. “Look how big it is.”

Only Nowell Park is bigger among the open-field parks managed by the district, Burich said.

But Forest Park is special, he said.

“Sometimes we renovate playgrounds and facilities. We rejuvenate a park,” Burich said. “In this case, we had a chance to be part of rejuvenating a community.”

City councilwoman Bettye Gavin, who also is executive director of the Forest Park Community Center, said the improved park has been the site of two back-to-school picnics that brought out hundreds of people. People are asking about the pavilion because they want to plan events for next summer, she said.

“Parks play such a key role in quality of life and improving the community,” Gavin said.

One example, she said, is a youth baseball team that was created this year partially from kids out of Fairview, many of whom never played the game before. The team won the championship in a local league, she said.

“Now,” Gavin said, looking out to the new baseball diamond, “they’re going to adopt this as their home field.”

D-210 residents meet with lawmaker

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – Lincoln-Way High School District 210 residents met with a state lawmaker Monday to find ways to have more oversight of school board authority, including its financial decisions.

State Rep. Margo McDermed, R-Mokena, met with dozens of Lincoln-Way parents and residents who were frustrated with a lack of communication from school board members and unclear information surrounding past decisions, such as the one to close North high school.

Lincoln-Way board members chose in a 5-2 vote to shut down North next fall to close the gap on budget deficits that landed it with the lowest financial rating by state education standards.

McDermed told the audience – as she’s stated in the past – that as a state legislator, she has no power over the school board.

“The power to open a school and budget for a school belongs to the school board,” she said.

McDermed has been holding a series of informal town hall meetings over the month with her constituents to talk about state issues.

After Monday’s meeting,

she said she’d consider drafting a resolution on auditing the Lincoln-Way school district, speaking with the Illinois State Board of Education on auditing school districts and looking into the issue of life safety inspections.

Residents came with complaints about Lincoln-Way board members. Among them was the feeling the decision to close North was “shoved down our throats,” as one resident said. Another was that there was no objective criteria for closing a school.

Residents also complained board members don’t answer emails or calls and requests

for meetings outside of board meetings were not met. They were also tired of board members blaming the state.

They asked McDermed for any recourse.

“Can we put the brakes on this? Because the forensic audit is key,” said one resident.

At the last board meeting, members unanimously decided to pursue proposals for a forensic and external audit.

Many residents were interested in the state performing an audit of Lincoln-Way finances, which McDermed said a resolution could be filed for but would undergo a long legislative process.

But the board took no action after the closed session, leaving the status of Executive Director Dominic Egizio still unresolved.

When asked if the report was about the investigation into Egizio, park board President Glen Marcum said, “It was the investigative report.”

But Marcum said he couldn’t comment on the report, or release it to The Herald-News.

“It’s still a personnel issue,” Marcum said.

Sources have told The Herald-News Egizio was placed on administrative leave in August after the park board was notified of threatening litigation involving Egizio and a park district employee.

Marcum confirmed that Egizio was on administrative leave, pending an investigation, during an Aug. 24 meeting. But he and other district officials haven’t re-

Marcum wouldn’t confirm if Sotos is investigating Egizio.

Audit report

The park board also reviewed a yearly audit report during regular session Monday.

According to the audit, the district’s net financial position increased by $161,412, or 0.2 percent.

The district’s total fund balance is $12.74 million, increasing $10.1 million in large part because of the general obligation bonds issued at the end of last year with the passing of a $19.5 million referendum bond measure in the November elections.

Burich said there was street lighting along Williamson Avenue and lighting in the pavilion, also noting that it was a two-way issue with residents in the past wanting the lights turned off at other parks.

Will County Take Back The Night annual event set for Thursday

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The annual Will County Take Back The Night rally and vigil will be Thursday night.

Hundreds are expected to attend this year’s Take Back The Night, which was established in 1996 in response to increasing violence toward women.

The annual Joliet event is designed to raise awareness about violence against women and provide a support system for sexual violence survivors.

Domestic abuse survivors, as well as friends and families of victims of domestic and sexual abuse, are encouraged to attend, said Beth Ann May, a long-serving Take Back The Night committee member.

“This event really gives families and survivors a safe place to go where everyone understands their story and understands their loss,” May said.

Each year, May said, a memorial takes place where names of sexual and domestic abuse victims in 2015 are read off, with the help of Will County Coroner Pat O’Neil’s office.

May said the featured guest speaker is Victor Pacini, a survivor of sexual abuse. His sister was murdered in 2001 while

in an abusive relationship.

Pacini co-founded A Night for Renee, an annual benefit that raises money and awareness for domestic violence, according to a news release from event organizers. Pacini has dedicated his life to empowering young people to share that confident voice, according to the news release.

At the conclusion of the event, those in attendance can participate in a rally against violence.

Will County Take Back the Night also raises funds for local agencies that assist women and their families. Donations help provide financial assistance to nonprofit agencies that work directly with those affected by violence.

There also will be a nonperishable food item pantry accepting donations of paper goods, or grocery store and gas station gift cards to donate for use by our area domestic violence shelters, according to a press release.

SHAW MEDIA JOLIET – U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, announced Monday that Joliet Junior College will receive a $413,956 grant through the Strengthening Institutions Program of the U.S. Department of Education.

The grant funding will support JJC’s Progressive Pathways to Student Success, an initiative aimed at increasing student retention and completion by investing in technology, customizing outreach

to students and enhancing support systems to assist students in developing a career path, according to a news release from Foster’s office.

“By expanding Progressive Pathways to Student Success, more students will have the resources and support they need to complete their studies and graduate on a path to success,” Foster said in the news release. “Community colleges provide a vital service for students looking to pursue higher education or career training, and I am glad to see JJC

taking the lead by offering these types of programs.”

JJC will use the grant to create pathways to success for all students, including those who may have developmental education needs, JJC President Debra Daniels said in the release.

“We thought it was time to fill the position and offered it to Mark,” Riddle said. “He has a long history and background.”

Reynolds said his new parttime position pays about $39 an hour with no benefits.

Riddle said he always thought holding a position in the district and on the board wasn’t allowed, but state legislation permitted it.

Reynolds said he hopes the next trustee keeps in mind what is best for residents when making tough decisions on the board.

Unions slam Rauner for ‘full-blown, full-throttle attack’ on working class

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Union members and labor supporters slammed Gov. Bruce Rauner on Monday, calling his Turnaround Agenda a “full-blown, full-throttle attack” on unions and the middle class.

Those in attendance at the afternoon news conference, sponsored by the Illinois AFLCIO, said Rauner’s demand to pass reform agenda items is the only reason Illinois remains without a state budget.

“Two days from now, we’re going to be entering into the very first quarter of the longest budget stalemate that we’ve had in Illinois history,” said state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood. “And the simple fact is … this is the one agenda that’s keeping this stalemate alive.”

Over the past several months, Rauner has repeatedly pushed for lawmakers to pass a series of pro-business reforms – part of the governor’s “Turnaround Agenda” – including workers compensation reform, tort reform and the eliminating or weakening of prevailing wage regulations.

Rauner has said he is willing to talk about the budget, and even consider a tax increase to fund key services – if the Democrat-controlled Legislature went along with a number of his reforms.

State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, and several Democrat lawmakers in attendance argued Rauner is using the state’s fiscal woes to push his anti-union agenda.

“I’m more distressed than ever that he believes abolishing unions, abolishing collective bargaining, is the

panacea, the elixir, the silver bullet for all that ails Illinois.

He’s clearly wrong,” McGuire said.

Many took issue with Rauner’s call to eliminate or change the state’s prevailing wage law, which requires state-funded public construction project pay wages comparable to the rates of the region.

Walsh Jr. said cutting wage standards would worsen job safety. Prevailing wages keep construction costs down by promoting high-skill workers that get the job right the first time, he said.

Weakening the prevailing wage law would give more control of the bidding process, save taxpayer money and increase bid competition, Rauner spokeswoman Lyndsey Walters said in an email Monday.

In response to lawmakers blaming Rauner on Monday for the budget impasse, Walters said: “Illinois is facing a massive deficit because the state’s finances were mishandled for years ... Rauner is seeking structural reforms to free up resources to help our most vulnerable citizens and create jobs which will grow the economy. Unfortunately, the majority party continues blocking the governor’s reform agenda.”

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Police said two women ran out of Victoria’s Secret in The Promenade Bolingbrook last week with more than $3,000 in clothing.

At 11:19 a.m. Sept. 22, two women who had been looking

at merchandise in the store approached the display next to the door, Lt. Carter Larry said.

“Suddenly the two females grabbed several items from the display and ran out of the store to a tan-colored minivan,” Larry said.

The women took 17 pairs of pants valued at $54.95 each

and 16 shirts valued at $59.95 each, according to Larry.

Both suspects were described as black women in their early 20s. One was wearing a red jogging suit and the other had “bright red hair” and wore dark clothing. Larry said the suspects’ method and description matches several earlier thefts at the store.

JOLIET – Three men were arrested last week on drug trafficking charges after authorities said the suspects were dealing cocaine from a house in the 1200 block of Highland Avenue in Joliet.

Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad Director Mike Weber said police were given information about drug activity at the residence about two weeks ago and “set up some ‘old school’ surveillance.”

About 6:15 p.m. Thursday, squad agents saw Hector M. Rangel-Marquez, 31, leave with a package and contacted Hector M. Joliet police, Rangelw h o s t o p p e d Marquez him for committing a traffic violation, Weber said. Police allege they found a package containing 4-and-a-

half ounces of cocaine in the vehicle.

Rangel-Marquez, of the 100 block of Wilcox Street, was arrested on a Mario charge of drug RangelMarquez trafficking.

“Based on that, we applied for a search warrant for the residence and recovered about seven m o r e o u n c e s Marco Laraof cocaine and Camilo approximately $1,000,” Weber said.

Rangel-Marquez’s brother, Mario Rangel-Marquez, 43, and his roommate, Marco Lara-Camilo, 32, were arrested on charges of drug trafficking.

The three are being held in Will County Jail.

Weber said the cocaine has an estimated street value of more than $39,000.

Frankfort receives funding for St. Francis Road project SHAW MEDIA FRANKFORT – The Will County Governmental League Transportation Committee is providing $500,000 to Frankfort to cover the cost of temporary signals for traffic maintenance during construction of the St. Francis Road project.

This project involves the reconstruction and widening of St. Francis Road west of 88th Avenue, according to a news release from the village of Frankfort. The project aims to improve the traffic flow and safety in the area. Without this funding, construction would have required excessive detour routing resulting in delays and inconvenience to local residents.

St. Francis Road is scheduled to be widened to three lanes with construction to begin in mid- to late-2016. In 2014, Frankfort received a $2 million grant for the project. In addition, in 2014, the village received a $1 million Highway Bridge Rehabilitation Program grant for reconstruction of the bridge on St. Francis Road, as well as a $147,500 grant from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality board for bike trail connections.

With the recent award of the additional $500,000 STP funding, the village will receive $3,647,500 toward the construction project. The project is estimated to be completed in early 2017.

“The priority of the village is to keep our residents safe,” Frankfort Mayor Jim Holland said in the news release.

“This additional funding provides for the safe flow of traffic on St. Francis Road during the long construction period

while this road is improved.

Once completed, this project will provide a fully improved roadway with proper turn lanes, curbing and pedestrian sidewalks and bike paths.

The residents of the village deserve nothing less.”

Rauner and White spoke by phone last week, according to both offices.

Rauner spokeswoman Lyndsey Walters said in a Monday statement there are similar operational issues throughout state government and the governor’s office is willing to help find solutions.

“We hope he will also join us in encouraging his friends in the legislature to fulfill their constitutional obligation to pass a truly balanced budget,” she said of White.

Overtime legislative sessions on the budget have been ongoing in Springfield with little accomplished. Democrats want the first-term governor to agree to raise taxes to help close a multibillion-dollar deficit, but the governor has said he won’t do so until legislators sign off on pro-business changes he wants.

Hastert lawyers talking possible plea deal The Associated Press CHICAGO – A possible plea deal is being discussed for former U.S. House Speaker Dennis Hastert, who is accused of skirting federal banking laws in an attempt to pay someone $3.5 million to hide claims of past misconduct, prosecutors and defense attorneys told a federal judge Monday.

The disclosure came during a pretrial hearing in U.S. District Court in Chicago, although no details about a possible deal or its terms were released. Hastert didn’t attend the hearing.

An indictment handed down in May alleges that the Republican agreed to pay the money to a person identified only as “Individual A,” but offers no details about the alleged misconduct. The Associated Press and other media, citing anonymous sources, have reported the payments

were intended to conceal claims of sexual misconduct decades ago.

“We are seeing if we can resolve this case generally,” Hastert’s attorney, John Gallo, said when U.S. District Judge Thomas M. Durkin raised concerns about repeated requests for delays in the case.

Gallo characterized the talks as “linear and productive.” Prosecutor Steven Block confirmed the discussions, saying: “This is not a situation where both sides are sitting on their hands.”

Authorities allege that Hastert structured cash withdrawals in increments of just under $10,000 in an attempt to avoid reporting rules, and when questioned by the FBI, said he was taking the money out because he didn’t trust banks.

The indictment also notes that Hastert was a teacher and coached high school wrestling until 1981 in Yorkville. Hastert still lives near the town.

Hastert has pleaded not guilty to violating banking laws and lying to the FBI. He remains free on bond.

Durkin scheduled a status hearing for Oct. 15, to get updates on the talks. The judge indicated that if a plea deal isn’t finalized by then, he will set a trial date for April or March.

Plea deals are common in federal cases, where defendants seek lesser sentences in exchange for guilty pleas. In Hastert’s case, the negotiations also could keep details of the allegations secret, including the identity of “Individual A.” Prosecutors and defense attorneys have taken steps to keep that information confidential.

Both sides maintained that strategy Monday. Gallo said his defense team drafted a motion to dismiss the indictment and gave a draft to prosecutors, an uncommon move that neither side explained.

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White announced Monday his office will suspend mailing some reminders to the public because of the budget standoff, news that followed warnings from his office of other problems such as the possibility that the electricity could be shut off at the Capitol.

Gov. Bruce Rauner, a Republican, and the Democrat-controlled Legislature have not agreed on a state budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1. While much state money is being spent through state laws and court orders, without a budget there isn’t authority to make other payments.

White sent Rauner a letter last week outlining issues related to missed payments, including his concerns that utility companies might shut off service at the Capitol and other facilities.

He said warnings to suspend services already have come from computer and

software contract vendors, a trash pickup entity and the armored truck company that picks up millions in cash each day from secretary of state facilities. In Illinois, the secretary of state oversees driver services, maintains state records and runs security and maintenance at the Capitol.

“Unfortunately, my office is getting to the point where our bills are no longer being paid, and this will directly impact office services to the people,” White wrote in the letter. “The situation has grown critical, and we are seeking a solution to this problem.”

White announced Monday the office will pause mailing notices for vehicle registration renewals. The move is estimated to save $450,000 a month, allowing his office to keep mailing other reminders such as for license plate renewal, he said in a statement.

Those who need to renew vehicle registrations will have to do so in person because the PIN number needed to do so online is sent through the mail.

Philanthropist-investor Richard Rainwater dies The ASSOCIATED PRESS FORT WORTH, Texas – Richard Rainwater, the son of a North Texas grocer who went on to amass a fortune as an investment manager before becoming a billionaire investor and philanthropist in his own right, has died, according to his charitable foundation. He was 71.

A statement issued by the Rainwater Charitable Foundation said Rainwater died Sunday morning at his Fort Worth, Texas, home after a long battle with a rare neurological disease. He had been battling progressive supranuclear palsy since 2009 and had pumped millions into a campaign to finding a cure.

Melissa Parrish, president of Rainwater Inc., also confirmed the death.

Among Rainwater’s career achievements was conducting billionaire investor Sid Bass’ acquisition of a major stake in the Walt Disney Co. and partnering with future President George W. Bush in the 1989 purchase of the Texas Rangers baseball team.

Forbes magazine listed Rainwater as the world’s 663rd wealthiest person and ranked him 236th in the United States with an estimated net worth of $3 billion in 2015.

The Bass family, heirs to Texas oil wildcatter Sid Richardson’s fortune, hired the Stanford Business School graduate from Goldman Sachs to manage its investments when Rainwater was 26, the statement said. In 1984,

Richardson and Sid Bass invested $478 million in a struggling Walt Disney Co. and helped to install then-Paramount Pictures President Michael Eisner as Disney’s chief executive officer.

In 1986, when he turned 42, Rainwater went into business for himself and later helped to engineer Bush’s purchase of the Rangers, foundation of Bush’s personal fortune.

“I was so saddened to learn that my friend Richard Rainwater died this weekend. Richard had a brilliant mind and a generous heart.

He was a lot of fun, inspiring to be around, and generous and courageous to the very end,” Bush said in a statement issued by his office Sunday.

Rainwater also mentored other investors such as David Bonderman, another Bass family employee who went on to become founding partner of TPG Capital. The firm has helped to recapitalize such businesses as Neiman Marcus department stores, Continental Airlines and Burger King.

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke describes progressive supranuclear palsy as a brain disorder that causes serious and progressive problems with control of gait and balance, along with complex eye movement and thinking problems.

Rainwater hadn’t made any public appearances since 2010, according to the charitable foundation’s statement.

CHICAGO – Bernie Sanders called on thousands of college students to join him in fighting for a $15 minimum wage, women’s rights and slowing climate change during a stop at his alma mater Monday that had echoes of Barack Obama’s successful White House bids.

The Democratic presidential candidate and independent senator from Vermont urged about 2,000 cheering students at the University of Chicago to register to vote and stand up to the “millionaires” he says are trying to control U.S. politics. Sanders graduated in 1964 from the university, where as a self-described mediocre student he led protests against racially segregated housing and said he got his first taste of “democratic socialism.”

“We need the idealism and the energy and the intelligence of millions of young people to join us in the fight to make America the kind of country we know it must become,” Sanders said. “There is nothing that I am telling you today that is pie-in-the-sky, that is utopian. Nothing.”

Obama also taught at the private university, which is near his Chicago home and the future site of his presidential library. Former Obama adviser David Axelrod, who now runs the University of Chicago’s Institute of Politics, introduced Sanders and joined him on stage for a brief question-and-answer session.

The cuts are unavoidable because of a state budget stalemate and a funding reduction for the school because of lower enrollment this year, SIU spokeswoman Rae Goldsmith told The Carbondale Southern Illinoisan.

She said many departments have opted not to fill vacant positions this year.

The cuts start in mid-October.

Study: Breast cancer detection not better with computer aid

CHICAGO – Computer-assisted detection used in most U.S. mammograms adds no benefit to breast cancer screening while substantially increasing costs, a large study suggests.

Some previous research said computer technology could serve almost as a second set of eyes for doctors. The technique uses special software to highlight suspicious-looking areas on mammogram images that radiologists who interpret the scans may have missed. The doctors

then take another look before making a determination.

But some of these earlier studies involved adding computer detection to mammograms using outdated film X-rays, not more advanced digital X-rays now used in most mammograms nationwide, the study authors said.

The older technique was more cumbersome; now computer-assisted detection is a standard part of digital mammogram machines.

The study involved nearly 324,000 women who had digital mammograms from 2003 to 2009. The researchers compared cancer detection rates after scans with and without computer-assisted detection. About 20 percent of scans did not include the technology.

The overall cancer detection rate – about 4 in 1,000 women – was similar in both groups.

Computer-assisted scans did prove to be slightly better at detecting very early tumors called ductal carcinoma in situ or DCIS, but whether that is a benefit is debatable because these tumors

are not invasive and some experts think they should not even be considered true cancers.

The study was published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine.

The National Cancer Institute paid for the research.

3 schools to reopen after Legionella found

ELGIN – Three suburban Chicago schools are reopening Monday after they were evacuated last week when elevated levels of Legionella bacteria were discovered.

The Elgin-Courier News reported the Elgin schools will reopen Monday – a day after an infectious disease specialist said he was confident there was almost no risk of infection. Legionella bacteria found in cooling towers forced school district officials to close the school buildings last week.

The schools include Eastview Middle School in Bartlett, Larkin High School in Elgin and the Educational Services Center that

houses two alternative secondary programs in Elgin.

The 3,000 students and 350 staffers were evacuated from those schools Wednesday.

Dow AgroSciences opens research facility at U of Illinois

CHAMPAIGN – A subsidiary of Dow Chemical Co. is opening a facility in the research park at the University of Illinois’ Champaign-Urbana campus.

Indianapolis-based Dow AgroSciences and the university announced the opening on Monday. The Dow AgroSciences Innovation Center joins the Dow Chemical Company Innovation Center, which opened in 2013.

Dow Chemical is based in Midland, Michigan.

The company and school said in a news release Dow projects at the new facility will focus on the intersection of technology and agriculture. Students, many graduate students, will work at the center.

Life on Mars? NASA says planet appears to have flowing water

By MARCIA DUNN The Associate Press CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Mars appears to have flowing rivulets of water, at least in the summer, scientists reported Monday in a finding that boosts the odds of life on the red planet.

“Mars is not the dry, arid planet that we thought of in the past,” said Jim Green, director of planetary science for NASA. Scientists in 2008 confirmed the existence of frozen water on Mars. Now, instruments aboard NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter have yielded what researchers said is the strongest evidence yet that water in liquid form trickles down certain Martian slopes.

And because liquid water is essential to life, the finding could have major implications for the possibility of microscopic life forms on Earth’s next-door neighbor.

“It suggests that it would be possible for there to be life today on Mars,” NASA’s science mission chief, John Grunsfeld, said at a Washington news conference.

The rivulets – if that’s

what they are, since the evidence for their existence is indirect – are about 12 to 15 feet wide and 300 feet or more long, scientists said. They apparently consist of wet soil, not standing water.

The water is believed to contain certain salts – not ordinary table salt, but magnesium perchlorate, magnesium chlorate and sodium perchlorate. Like road salt used to melt ice and snow on Earth, such compounds can prevent water from freezing at extremely low temperatures.

That would explain how water could exist in liquid form on Mars, which has an average temperature of minus 81 degrees Fahrenheit.

In addition to supporting life, the presence of liquid water could make things easier for astronauts visiting or living on Mars. Water could be used for drinking and for creating oxygen and rocket fuel. NASA’s goal is to send humans there in the 2030s.

Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA’s Mars exploration program, said the only definitive way for now to determine whether there’s life on Mars is to collect

rocks and soil for analysis on Earth, something a U.S. lander set for liftoff in 2020 will do.

“Water is one of the most precious resources necessary for a human mission to the red planet,” Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, chairman of the House science, space and technology committee, said in a statement. “The more evidence we find of it, the more encouraged I am for future Mars missions.”

Alfred McEwen of the University of Arizona at Tucson, a scientist on the project, said he, for one, believes the possibility of life on Mars to be “very high.”

The source of the briny water is a mystery. Scientists said it could be melting ice, an underground aquifer, water vapor from the thin Martian atmosphere, or some combination.

The evidence of flowing water consists largely of dark, narrow streaks on the surface that tend to appear and grow during the warmest Martian months and fade the rest of the year. The streaks are in places where the temperature is as low as 10 below zero.

To the Editor: Why is it in Ferguson, Baltimore, Chicago and other large cities that when a black offender is shot by a white police officer, we have riots? I believe black lives matter, but all lives matter, including white lives.

Black lives don’t seem to matter as long as a white person isn’t involved in the shooting. It seems as if most black-on-black shootings are gang-related.

Don’t parents of gang members know they are gang members? Parents should be more involved with their sons and find ways to keep them out of

gangs. Schools and sports are some ways to keep kids from gang involvement.

The citizens of these cities should be outraged that people who should care don’t. Where are the NAACP members, Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton, when these black-on-black shootings take place? Maybe all the Ferguson protesters should come to Chicago and confront the gangs – instead of police – who are shooting black-on-black people. I guess black-on-black shootings really don’t matter then.

Poll: Rauner winning public opinion in budget impasse A poll and a speech may have hardened positions even further on both sides of the highly partisan and bitter state government impasse.

The speech, by Chicago Archbishop Blase Cupich, you likely already know about. The survey, taken by Gov. Bruce Rauner’s pollster, you probably don’t. So, let’s start with the poll.

Basswood Research, which has done extensive work for the Rauner campaign, surveyed 800 likely Illinois general election voters Sept. 14 to 15 and found quite a bit of support for Rauner and a whole lot of opposition to House Speaker Michael Madigan.

The poll, which had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points, found that 45.5 percent approve of Rauner’s job performance, while 40 percent disapprove and 14 percent don’t know. Not great.

But a whopping 71 percent agreed with the statement: “Bruce Rauner is trying to shake things up in Springfield, but the career politicians are standing in his way,” while

just 21 percent said that wasn’t true.

Another 55 percent agreed that “Bruce Rauner is working to find bipartisan solutions that will help fix Illinois’ budget mess and improve the struggling state economy,” while 34.5 percent said it wasn’t true.

President Obama’s favorables (50 percent) were higher than Gov. Rauner’s (47 percent) in the poll, but Obama’s unfavorables (45 percent) were higher than Rauner’s (40 percent).

Only 11 percent approve of the job being done by the General Assembly, while 73 percent disapprove. House Speaker Michael Madigan’s favorable rating was only 21 percent, while his unfavorable was 60 percent. Only 19 percent had no opinion of Madigan either way, which means Madigan is quite well-known to voters.

An overwhelming 76 percent agreed “Mike Madigan controls the Democratic legislators in Springfield,” while a mere 10 percent disagreed and 14 percent weren’t sure.

VIEWS Rich Miller If you trust these poll results, then the public is largely siding with Rauner and views the General Assembly as unlikable obstructionists tools of the House Speaker.

So, a well-crafted, well-funded message that ties legislators or legislative candidates to Madigan could be disastrous.

There are caveats here.

This is Rauner’s pollster, so Democrats likely will be dismissive. Also, the group that commissioned the poll, the Illinois Business and Industry Council, is an unknown quantity with a vague website that was created in July.

But Rauner’s pollster was almost alone in accurately predicting the governor’s win last year. So, keep that in mind when the nay-saying starts.

And the point isn’t what the Democrats or even you or I think of the poll anyway. The point is that the Rauner people trust that pollster and are

convinced of the poll’s results.

So they truly believe they are winning and can make Madigan pay a steep price for losing.

But on the other side of the equation, we now have some very powerful folks who believe they have God – or at least the pope – firmly on their side.

Archbishop Cupich’s speech Sept.17 to the Chicago Federation of Labor was perhaps the most profound rallying cry for the importance of organized labor I’ve ever seen. Without mentioning the anti-union governor’s name, he made it clear he and Pope Francis stand firmly with unions – both public and private sector – and against those who would exploit or weaken them.

Two years ago, Madigan specifically credited Francis’ words of inclusion for his change of heart about gay marriage. You could argue Madigan was simply using his pope to justify a popular position change, but this time around, he has a pretty clear mandate from his church’s

leadership. “The archbishop has said the same thing that we’ve been saying in Springfield,” Madigan told reporters after Cupich’s address.

The problem with mixing religion too deeply with politics, of course, is religious beliefs can’t easily be negotiated away. So Cupich may have complicated matters.

Both the poll and the speech came during a period when folks with ties to both sides were attempting to get the top dogs to talk. Some are saying the governor will further narrow his economic demands to a far more politically doable list before he’ll agree to finally deal with the state budget.

But the poll numbers easily could harden the governor’s position, and the archbishop’s timing might very well end up hurting many of the neediest people served by his church’s charities if we don’t get a budget deal anytime soon.

I never seem to have any good news.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The boys soccer teams from Bolingbrook and Plainfield North entered Monday’s nonconference showdown in similar positions, but took different paths to get there.

While both sides had won 12 matches and suffered their lone defeat by 2-1 scores Sept.1, the Raiders had yielded only

eight goals in 16 contests, while the Tigers had scored 68 times in 13 outings.

Defense looked as if it might win out Monday. There was no scoring in the run of play in the first hour of play, and the lone goal came when Bolingbrook converted on an early penalty. But offense wound up prevailing as North scored twice in the final 13:25 to pull out a 2-1 victory.

After Nick Thompson got

the equalizer in the 67th minute, Austin Collier connected for the winner in the 78th minute to give the Tigers (13-1) their ninth straight victory.

“It feels so good,” Collier said. “Half of these guys play on our club team, so we knew that with them being 12-1-3 and we’re 12-1 that it was going to be a huge game. Obviously, it was a tough game, and we come back from 1-0 and bang it out. We both played a very

physical, good game.

“I got a yellow card, and it kind of threw us all off. The emotions got to us, and after I came off and back on, it went from where we had to stop talking and just let our feet do the talking and go play. Chemistry is the No. 1 thing for us.

We’ve been with the same club team since we were 3. It’s amazing how young we started off, and now it’s our senior year.”

For much of the final half, the back line of Jacob Perakis, Tyler Elmore, Jorge Navas and Henry Gonzalez seemed positioned to allow Bolingbrook (12-2-3) to do something no one had managed to pull off this season – blank North.

But the momentum suddenly shifted in the 67th minute when Thompson lined an attempt past Murillo. After Anweiler bounced a try off the post and Fink dove to thwart a liner by Flores, Collier got free in the late going and connected from close range.

“We were both playing very well, but they’re very fast and physical, and that kind of halted us a little,” Thompson said. “But then they seemed to be playing deeper, and I got a good shot to tie it. They’re a very good team, so we’ll get noticed more by other teams for beating them. I hope that we can go far in the playoffs, since last year was a letdown for us.”

This wasn’t the first time the Tigers have rallied; but considering whom they were up against and how much time was left, coach Steve Berry was pleased with the result.

“We knew that this was an opponent that was going to be one of the best that we’ve played all year,” Berry said.

“With Bolingbrook scoring first, it obviously put us on our

heels a little bit. For multiple minutes, we played too direct and didn’t get attached to the ball well enough.

“We knew that their back line was fantastic, and their

goalkeeper played extremely well, so we were going to have to beat them outside of a long ball. So we needed to have the ball more and have more combinations to do that. We got

two special goals. I was proud of the way that Austin came back following his yellow and answered as a senior leader would do.”

In the seventh minute, the Raiders caught the first break when Flores was fouled in the box and promptly converted the resulting penalty to give his team a 1-0 advantage.

Most of the best opportunities after that were long free kicks from Perakis and North’s Alex Lynch. Also during that sequence, Perakis broke up another good threat

“It was a hard-fought battle,” Raiders coach Jamie Clemmons said. “Our defense played like it has all season.

But late in the game, we made too many mistakes and gave the ball up. We’ve been struggling with our offense, so our defense has been our backbone.

“There’s a reason why they’ve scored that many goals this season. They’re an offensive juggernaut, and they take advantage of their opportunities. It was a difficult game, but hats off to them – they played well down the stretch and put the two goals in and beat us.”

JOLIET – University of St. Francis sophomore Josh Woodard has been named NAIA football National Defensive Player of the Week following his performance in the Saints’ 24-14 upset victory over No. 7-ranked Robert Morris last Saturday.

Woodard intercepted three passes, all in the second half, as the Saints won their third consecutive game. His second pick early in the fourth quarter set up a USF scoring drive that gave the Saints the lead for good. His third interception, with 4:31 left, helped seal the upset.

Woodard, who also was tabbed Mid-States Football Association Midwest League Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career,

leads the Saints with five in- Bozue and Matt Dlugopolski terceptions, giving him seven one each for Minooka. Sparks in 16 career games. and Austin Robare assisted.

Plainfield North’s Lindroth in bigger role GIRLS VOLLEYBALL STATS

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Over the past few seasons, Plainfield North has dominated the Southwest Prairie Conference.

However, this is more of a rebuilding year.

The Tigers graduated many key players last season and now have a younger offensive team. A majority of their hitters are first-year varsity starters.

North improves game by game, and it could be a threat come postseason.

One area that needed no improvement is the first outside hitter position.

Senior Allie Lindroth has that under control for North.

“Having Kaitlyn Fisher last year was a huge help and did relieve a lot of stress. We helped each other out. This year is me having to take on a bigger responsibility and a bigger role, and I accept that.”

Lindroth took that responsibility to heart in the loss against rival Plainfield Central. She dominated with 20 kills off bounces, tools, tips and everything in between.

In the past three years, Lindroth

“I developed a really strong, rapid-aggressive arm at an early age,” Lindroth said. “I was a starting pitcher on all my teams. It was all about speed.

Taking that from softball into volleyball and progressing that into an approach and an arm swing, it completely benefited me. Softball played a great part in my development.”

Seeking to improve

Even though Lindroth also was adept at softball, the faster tempo and the adrenaline she felt from volleyball became too appealing. She became passionate about the sport in fifth grade and to this day has a huge desire to keep getting better.

This season, she will lead her team on the court and teach the new starters how to compete against tough teams at the varsity level.

Once the school season ends, she will increase her skill even more.

Similar to Plainfield Central’s Ash-

ley Shook and Plainfield South’s Deyshia Lofton, Lindroth played for Sports Performance Volleyball Club’s 18-1 team, the reigning national champion.

Training on 18-1 made her better, and she hopes that by the end of the season, her team will adapt to the environment she is trying to bring.

“I learned more about myself last season than I have the past five years,” Lindroth said. “We had immense, extreme training. We strive for perfection daily. The work ethic and environment there taught me so much, and being able to bring that on the court here and bring that environment back here is a benefit.

“Once we get that training environment contagious and we get everyone on the same page, everyone will want to fight for the same thing. It’s important to have that environment, because if it’s existent, we can build up and create the team we know we’re capable of being.”

Frankfort Hickory Creek celebrates state softball title SUBMITTED REPORT NORMAL – Frankfort Hickory Creek Middle School beat two previously undefeated opponents – including Canton Ingersoll, 4-3, in a thrilling championship game – to win the IESA State Softball Tournament last weekend at Champions Fields.

Hickory Creek (21-3) edged St. Joseph (21-1) in an eight-inning quarterfinal, 7-6, having trailed 5-0 after two innings. Gabby Paliska doubled in the game-winning run in the eighth.

Avery Parchem had a triple, single and RBI. Brianna Ebenroth had two hits, Paige Geraghty two hits and an RBI, and Melissa Bauer a double and two RBIs. Danielle Drogemuller, who had pitched victories over Beecher in the regional final and Oak Prairie in the sectional, went the distance, allowing nine hits and one walk while striking out eight.

Hickory Creek defeated Charleston (16-5), 10-2, in the semifinals.

Drogemuller pitched three innings, and Katie Burns allowed one hit in four innings of shutout relief. Burns and Melissa Bauer had two hits and an RBI. Ebenroth chipped in two hits, and Kara Frencl had a hit and two RBIs. In the championship game, Hickory Creek scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a 3-2 deficit and pull out the walk-off victory over Ingersoll (19-1). Drogemuller

led off the bottom of the seventh with a single, and Paliska sacrificed.

Burns singled in Drogemuller with the tying run, and Frencl singled home Burns with the game-winner.

Drogemuller was dominant as she pitched six scoreless innings in relief to get the win. Payton Wuske laid down a suicide squeeze to knock in a run. Burns, Bauer and Geraghty contributed two hits each.

“We are so very proud of the girls,” Hickory Creek coach Mitch Stein said. “They were down in two of the games facing very good teams and never gave up. They were determined to win the whole thing and were not going to be stopped.”

Ashley Esposito, Ellie Marion, Maddie Harper and Abby McCreary rounded out the Hickory Creek roster. The coaches are Stein and Sean Bouck.

Mokena (12-6-1) also reached state but fell in the AA quarterfinals, 8-6, to Charleston. Allison Twohig, Bella Wilkerson, Isabella Toosley, Jenna Deang and Mia Hackett had two hits for Mokena. Hackett and Toosley homered, and Hackett drove in two runs.

STATE BASEBALL

St. Paul bids for three-peat: The IESA State Baseball Tournament is on tap this weekend at East Side Centre in East Peoria, and the Joliet area will be well-represented.

St. Paul (11-4) will face Jackson-

Friday in a Class 1A quarterfinal. St. Raymond (12-4) will face Staunton (16-0) at 10 a.m. in a Class 2A quarterfinal. In Class 3A, Coal City (24-1) has a quarterfinal date with Pekin Edison (16-1) at 10:30 a.m., while Homer (12-5) will take on Normal Kingsley (15-6) at 12:30 p.m.

St. Paul will shoot for its third straight Class 1A state title. The Giants earned a state berth with a 10-3 sectional win over Pontiac St. Mary.

Ben Vitas and Owen Roesel combined to pitch the victory. Vinny DeFilippo and Danny Mangun had three hits.

Nathan Seeman contributed two hits, Vitas tripled and drove in three runs, and Ryan Louthan and Roesel doubled.

St. Paul won its regional championship game, 13-0, over Bourbonnais Maternity. Vitas and Louthan combined to throw a two-hitter. DeFilippo had three hits and five RBIs. Vitas Roesel both had a double and two singles. Nathan Seeman, Louthan and Cooper Ohlson contributed two hits each.

In the regional semifinal, St. Paul defeated Mazon-Verona-Kinsman, 16-0, as Cameron Seeman pitched a one-hitter, struck out five and walked nobody. St. Paul pounded out 13 hits in the victory. Seeman, Vinny DeFilippo, Vitas, Roesel and Alex Zawacki had two hits. Seeman and DeFilippo drove in three runs each.

Bears deal Allen for 2016 sixth-round draft choice

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com The Bears traded outside linebacker Jared Allen to the Panthers on Monday. The Bears received a 2016 sixthround draft pick as compensation.

“We had some depth at the linebacker position and were able to reach an agreement with the Panthers to bring a 2016 draft pick to our team in exchange for Jared Allen,” Bears general manager Ryan Pace said in a statement.

“Whether it is acquiring additional picks or signing players, we will continue to be aggressive in finding ways to improve our football team.

“We appreciate Jared’s contributions and wish him the best in Carolina.”

Allen had five tackles and one interception in three games this season, having moved from 4-3 defensive end to 3-4 outside linebacker. In Sunday’s loss to Seattle, he played only 30 snaps and did not talk to the media after the game.

Carolina runs a 4-3 defense with Ron Rivera, and Allen will play defensive end there plus help their depth because

Charles Johnson has a hamstring injury.

Pernell McPhee and Jarvis Jenkins met with the media Monday afternoon, but the trade had yet to be made official and neither player knew that Allen, who attended meetings in the morning, had been acquired by Carolina.

“We lose a leader, a leader out of the locker room. We lose a great guy,” said McPhee, who started opposite Allen. “A great teammate. A guy who got a lot of jokes to tell us and make us laugh when, you know. But I’m pretty sure wherever he goes, he’s going to make the best of it. “... He knew the game. Just like myself, he knew the game.

He studied. He prepared himself well. He took care of his body. Sometimes when I’d be on the field, and when I don’t see certain plays coming to me, he’d (say), ‘Hey, watch out for this.’ It was a great experience overall playing with him.”

Jenkins also benefited from his brief time sharing a defense with Allen, even at different positions.

“Even though he’s an outside linebacker, even with me, playing three-technique on his side, he gave me pointers

on how to rush to help me him both on our side to help our job,” Jenkins said. “The thing about him is, he can break down every critique, every spot on the defensive line. He kind of gives you an edge to have a leader like that who can give you pointers, that’s been in the league, that’s did it and has a lot of sacks. He’s definitely going to be missed.”

As far as Allen’s contract goes, the Bears already paid him a $11.5 million roster bonus for the season, so the Panthers absorb only his $1 million base salary. He was set to earn $8.5 million in 2016 and 2017 with the same amount as his cap hit, but he would not have cost the team any money to cut after this season.

Since meeting with Bears coach John Fox at the owners meetings in the spring, Allen was committed to learning to play from a two-point stance in Vic Fangio’s system. He attended every voluntary workout in the spring through training camp practices.

Allen chose the Bears over the Seahawks in March 2014, signing a four-year, $32 million contract with then-GM Phil Emery.

Denorfia HR in 11th gives Cubs win The Associated Press

CHICAGO – Chris Denorfia hit a pinch-hit home run leading off the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Cubs a 1-0 victory Monday night over the Kansas City Royals.

Denorfia hit the first pitch from reliever Miguel Almonte (0-2) into the left-field bleacher for the Cubs’ major league-leading 13th walk-off victory of the season. It was Denorfia’s third homer of the season.

Newly retired addictions counselor at Joliet center shares her experiences

This is the heart of addiction counseling, said Paul Lauridsen, clinical director at Stepping Stones Treatment and Recovery Center in Joliet.

That quality, Lauridsen added, is what made Virginia Brock of Romeoville, a recovering alcoholic, an excellent counselor.

Brock, 81, recently exchanged her employee status at Stepping Stones for that of volunteer, but she can’t see herself ever leaving the treatment center for good.

“It’s a wonderful agency, and the people are unbelievable,” said Brock, who started working for Stepping Stones in 1987. “They’re always on the cutting edge with treatment.”

Brock’s recovery story

Brock has witnessed plenty of changes through the years in how addiction is perceived and treated. Having grown up in a “dry” Georgia mill town during the Great Depression, Brock said she didn’t taste alcohol until she began working as a secretary for Chicago Title and Trust Co. After that first drink, Brock decided she liked alcohol. A lot. And so did the man she married.

“An alcoholic does not leave a drink on the table,” Brock said. “They continue drinking until the party is over.”

But Brock said she never drank on the job, which later was the Will County Health Department. She only drank at home and after the children were in bed, so Brock – mistakenly – thought they did not know.

But it was Brock’s children who, in 1982, insisted she get help when Brock was 50.

After working in shortterm treatment at Stepping Stones, Brock eventually became director of its extended care program for women, where she remained until she semi-retired in 2000. She loved the position.

“Being around people who are already sober and ready to move on with their lives was rewarding work,” Brock said.

Changing face of addiction

Viewing substance abuse as a disease has lessened the stigma (“And it is a disease,” Brock said) and increased the options. For instance, using medications such as methadone to treat heroin used to be discouraged.

“Back in the ’80s, most treatment centers would not accept people who were on medication,” Brock said.

In the early years, Brock said most patients were older – mostly men – with alcohol as their preferred drug. Many of the alcoholic women Brock saw also had addictions to Valium. From what Brock has seen, alcohol still is the most abused drug in adults older than 60.

As time passed, Brock saw more addictions to marijuana.

By 1989, cocaine was popular – and the clients were younger. Brock said heroin abuse is “running rampant” today.

Many clients are younger than 25, with some in their 30s and 40s.

“Heroin is cheap,” Brock said. “More people are making it, so it is affordable – and accessible to young people.”

The former confrontational approaches to counseling gave away to building rapport with clients, Brock said. Lauridsen said clients under Brock’s care felt worthy and knew “their problems were her problems.”

“She’s just a caring, giving person,” Lauridsen said, “one of a kind, really.”

Prepared Childbirth classes at Silver Cross Hospital

Joliet Noon Lions Club to take part in Candy Day

JOLIET – The Joliet Noon Lions Club will participate with the Lions of Illinois Foundation with Candy Day this year on Oct. 9 and 10. People should look for Lions members in their bright yellow vests Candy Day began in 1952 and now funds services to more than 18,000 Illinois women, men and children who are sight- and/or hearing-impaired.

The purpose of Candy Day is to offer candy to all and accept donations as the receiver may choose to help fund Lions’ project.

Statewide services include hearing, sight and glaucoma testing vans, Camp Lions, low-vision clinics, and hearing aids – just to name a few.

TeamCITGO in Lemont rides for a Cure to MS

LEMONT – For the 18th consecutive year, employees from the CITGO Lemont Refinery volunteered with TeamCITGO to ride 15 to 200 miles across the northern Illinois countryside in the Bike MS: Tour de Farms in DeKalb, hosted by the Greater Chicagoland Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

The annual charity bike ride is the largest of its kind in Illinois.

MS is an often-disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts that flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. According to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, more than 2.3 million people are affected by MS worldwide.

This year, TeamCITGO included 25 CITGO employees, contractors and vendors from the Lemont Refinery, who raised more than $28,000 for the cause and collectively rode 2,005 miles for the two-day charity event.

Members of TeamCITGO came together to raise funds for the event and could map their own distance, choosing anywhere between 15 to 200 miles for their two-day bike ride.

Throughout the years, the CITGO Lemont Refinery has raised more than $200,000 for critical research and programs that support individuals and families in

Corrections department hosts Summit of Hope

JOLIET – The Illinois Department of Corrections hosted the Summit of Hope on Sept. 2 at the Salvation Army in Joliet. It was an opportunity for parolees and probationers to meet with local employers, get a driver’s license and have a health screening.

More than 700 parolees were invited to attend the event, and 475 attended. It was held at the Salvation Army, at 300 3rd Ave. in Joliet.

Morris Hospital building Gardner health center

MORRIS – Morris Hospital soon will have a new health care center in Gardner at 409 N. Route 53.

The 2,200-square-foot medical office building that is under construction is on the same property that houses the Southeastern Grundy Medical Center building, where Morris Hospital has been a tenant for the past 17 years.

Southeastern Grundy Medical Center Inc. is donating the existing building and land to Morris Hospital, with an agreement that Morris Hospital remains in Gardner for a minimum of 10 additional years. When construction is complete, the existing building will be removed.

Targeted for completion in October, the 2,200-squarefoot building will include 1,500 square feet of office space for family medicine physician Dr. Jennifer Thomas and nurse practitioner Kathy Ulivi, both with the Gardner Healthcare Center of Morris Hospital. The other

The earliest stage of decay appears as a white or brown area on a tooth.

You can’t see this white spot, but your dentist can.

If decay is caught at this stage, there’s a good chance it can be stopped and reversed.

Treatments include limiting sugary snacks and beverages and taking fluoride supplements.

Your dentist can also apply fluoride, an antiseptic or a sealant to your teeth to stop the progress of early decay.

Unchecked, bacterial acid will bore a hole in the enamel. This is a cavity.

At this point, the tooth may ache. It may also be sensitive to hot, cold or sweet foods.

Without treatment, the cavity gets bigger, extending into the soft tissue of the pulp and causing an infection called pulpitis.

The infected pulp tissue swells, squeezing neighboring blood vessels.

This cuts off the blood supply to the pulp, and the pulp dies. People with pulpitis usually feel severe pain. (I’ve put an illustration of this process on my website, askdoctork.com.)

Dear Dr. K: What is tooth decay, and how does it happen?

Dear Reader: Tooth decay is a disease of the mouth that can lead to cavities and infection.

But before we start talking about sick teeth, let’s talk about healthy teeth.

Each tooth has one or more roots that are anchored in the bones of the jaw.

Since those roots are inside the jaw bone, they are invisible. The part of the tooth that we see, sticking out above the gumline, is the crown.

The crown of the tooth is covered with a hard, whitish material called enamel.

The enamel ends at about your gumline, where the root begins.

The root of the tooth is covered with a thin layer of another hard, bonelike material called cementum.

Inside the tooth are two other types of dental tissue: dentin and pulp.

Dentin is harder than cementum but softer than enamel. Most of the tooth is dentin, so it is primarily the hard dentin that is doing the work of chewing your food into tiny pieces.

The core of a tooth is a chamber extending from the crown into the roots. Inside this chamber is the pulp, a collection of loose connective tissue laced with blood vessels. A network of nerves runs through the pulp. When the pulp is damaged or infected, the nerves coursing through the pulp make the tooth hurt.

Tooth decay (also known as dental caries) begins with the development of plaque, the sticky, bacteria-laden film that collects on your teeth between brushings.

The bacteria in the plaque “eat” sugar and food that stays in the mouth after eating.

Dear Abby: I have lived in the United States for 40 years. My first 32 years were spent in Puerto Rico, so I speak with an accent.

My problem is almost everyone I meet asks me where I’m from. I usually try to disguise my discomfort by jokingly asking them to guess.

The truth is, I feel singled out as being different and not belonging. My friends and family tell me I’m being too sensitive, that people are just curious. PUBLIC NOTICE VILLAGE OF HOMER GLEN WILL COUNTY, ILLINOIS NOTICE TO CONTRACTORS The Village of Homer Glen will receive proposals from qualified, professional burn contractors at the Village Hall, 14933 S. Founders Crossing, Homer Glen, IL 60491, until 2:00 P.M. on October 29, 2015.

Village of Homer Glen Prescribed Burn Erin Hills Park and Long Run Creek This project consists of a prescribed burn for two sites within the Village of Homer Glen and must be completed by April 15, 2016. One site is located at Erin Hills Park near the intersection of Erin Drive and South Dublin Drive. The other site is located on a ComEd right-of-way (ROW) southwest of the intersection of South Will-Cook Road and Venetian Way, adjacent to Long Run Creek.

Proposals will be publicly read aloud at 2:00 P.M. on October 29, 2015. No bid shall be withdrawn after the opening of the proposals without the consent of the Village Manager.

All proposals shall be sealed in an envelope, addressed to the Village of Homer Glen. The name and address of the bidder and the name of the project shall appear on the outside of the envelope. Proposals must be submitted on the forms provided by the Village.

The proposal documents, including specifications, are on file at the Village of Homer Glen. The proposal documents will be issued until 4:00 P.M. on October 25, 2015.

A bid bond, or a certified check/bank draft drawn on a solvent bank, payable without condition to the Village of Homer Glen in an amount not less than five percent (5%) of the bid shall be submitted with each proposal, as a guaranty that, if the proposal is accepted, a contract will be entered into and the performance of the contract is properly secured.

A performance bond in a sum equal to one hundred percent (100%) of the amount of the bid, with sureties to be approved by the Village for the faithful performance of the contract, must be furnished by the successful bidder upon award of the contract. All bids or proposals shall contain an offer to furnish bond upon acceptance of such bid or proposal.

The right is reserved to reject any or all proposals, to waive technicalities or to advertise for new proposals, if in the judgment of the Village their best interests will be promoted thereby.

The Village also reserves the right to increase or decrease quantities.

The Facility consists of a horizontal and vertical expansion beyond the boundaries of the existing Laraway RDF ("existing site"). The existing site receives contaminated soils, industrial waste and construction and demolition debris. The Expansion includes two areas identified as the North Area and the South Area. The North Area consists of a 70.4-acre horizontal expansion and a 40.6-acre vertical expansion. The South Area consists of a 23.5-acre horizontal expansion and a 69.1-acre vertical expansion.

The Facility intends to commence operation in the year 2018 and receive approximately 3,000,000 tons per year of contaminated soils, industrial waste and construction and demolition debris from Will, Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Grundy, Kane, Kankakee, Kendall, Lake, LaSalle and McHenry Counties in Illinois and Lake County in Indiana. The Facility will provide approximately 10 years of additional life to the existing site, which is expected to reach capacity in 2021.

The Application is on file with the Will County Board and is available for public inspection at the office of the Will County Clerk, 302 North Chicago Street, Joliet, Illinois 60432. Copies of the Application may be obtained from the County Board upon payment of the actual cost of reproduction.

Any person may file a written comment with the County Clerk concerning the appropriateness of the proposed facility for its intended purpose. In making its final determination whether to approve the Application, the County Board will consider any such comment received or postmarked not later than thirty (30) days after the date of the last public hearing thereon. Said written comments must be sent or delivered to the Will County Clerk, 302 North Chicago Street, Joliet, Illinois 60432. Such comments shall become a part of the record of proceedings on the Application.
