Joliet Iron and Steel Company JOLIET – Joliet is known as the “City of Steel” because the town was a major steel-producing center for many years.

In the early 1870s, the Joliet Iron and Steel Company was producing iron and steel products.

Located on the city’s north side, between Collins Street and the Des Plaines River, stood one of the largest iron and steel manufacturing facilities in the nation.

Between 1869 and 1930, the Joliet Iron and Steel Works employed thousands of Joliet-area residents, most of them immigrants from Poland, Sweden and Slovenia, who worked and produced iron and steel products, including rails for the nation’s growing railroad system.

The plant assumed new ownership numerous times and eventually became part of the Illinois Steel Company, which eventually would become part of U.S. Steel Corporation.

By the 1930s, the operations became unprofitable and the plant’s six major blast furnaces were demolished, leaving only foundations. In 1989, U.S. Steel donated 45 acres to the Corporation for Open Lands (CorLands), including the foundations of the historic blast furnaces, engine house and other steel-making structures.

In 1998, the Forest Preserve District of Will County opened an interpretive walking trail through the remains of the old structures at the Joliet Iron Works Historic Site along the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Various stops

By JAN LARSEN Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Six-year-old Jacob Prawdzik of Joliet lives near the Joliet Regional Airport and can already spot World War II planes because they are his favorite kind.

So on Sunday, during the annual Airport Fest, the diminutive and precocious air buff was excited to get up close and personal with a TMB Avenger, the kind former President George Bush crashed in World War II. He had seen it up in the air many times, his mother said. It was equally thrilling for Jacob to meet the owner/pilot, Tom Buck of Joliet.

It was Jacob’s first visit to the park district’s airport, and the family spent hours there.

But they couldn’t go without inspecting the Avenger. Jacob says he wants to learn how to fly airplanes one day.

The Joliet Park District’s annual fly-in/cruise-in festival was held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday and featured airplane rides, flying demonstrations, activities for children and displays of World War II and other unique aircraft.

Another equally enthused 6-year-old aficionado attending Sunday’s event was Marissa DeGregorio of Romeoville.

Unlike Jacob, she’s flown plenty of times and has spent a lot of time at the airport because her dad and uncle coown a Beechcraft Sundowner.

But like Jacob, she wants to pilot as soon as she can. She has a little pink peddle plane that she tools around in while dad is working in the hangar and it was out for inspection Sunday.

Buck “gets” the excitement kids feel. After his first small airplane ride when he was about 10, he developed a lifetime interest in aviation. He learned to fly in high school (at the Joliet airport) and has two planes.

“People like to see this one [the Avenger] fly,” he said after taxiing in to a crowd of en-

The top attraction of the fest is a chance to go up in a small plane for about 15 minutes for $25, supplied mostly by local owners/pilots. This year, flights started an hour and a half earlier to accommo-

date the demand. Attendance Sunday was a record high, McFarland said, probably because of perfect weather and the addition of a classic car show.

“We had a lot of people show up early for the pancake breakfast,” she said.

“Any opportunity we can get to pique a young person’s interest” is important to aviation, she said.

Handicap parking fines may go up

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city of Joliet could double fines for handicapped parking space violators in an effort to stem what some community leaders say has become an epidemic problem.

The City Council is set to consider increasing fines from $250 to $500 when it meets Tuesday, at-large Councilman Jim McFarland said.

McFarland initially pushed for an increase to $350 to match fine levels in nearby towns.

But District 4 Councilwoman Bettye Gavin proposed pushing the fine to $500 – the maximum allowed under state law – to “give the ordinance some teeth.”

Handicapped parking violations have become a growing problem during the last two years, said Tony Arellano, chairman of the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on Disability Issues.

Until 2012, a volunteer citizens’ patrol worked with Joliet police to help identify scofflaws. The program was disbanded after volunteer participation declined and there were funding cuts within the

police department, Arellano said.

At its height, the patrol would be out two to three times a week, concentrating primarily on large retail lots in places such as supermarkets. But the intent wasn’t just to hand out tickets, it was to educate the public, Arellano said.

“The good that takes place is that people see it happening and they’re more aware of their responsibility to stay out of the handicapped spots,” Arellano said. “Now, without the patrols, I see more and more people going in there.

Even if it’s just for a couple minutes, it’s still a violation.”

Pam Heavens, executive director of the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living, agreed that handicapped parking violations in Joliet are an ongoing problem.

“Accessible parking continues to be abused by people who do not truly need the reserved spaces,” Heavens said.

“The additional fine would no doubt help curb some of the abuses. However, reporting illegal parking will be key in enforcement. Of course, there always will be some people who will take a chance and park there anyway, regardless

of the amount of the fine.”

Arellano said he planned to discuss resurrecting the citizen patrols with the police department.

Joliet Police Chief Brian Benton said he welcomed the idea of renewing the patrols.

“It’s been our motivation to get our volunteers more involved,” Benton said. “We’re trying to improve our community engagement. One priority for us is to restart programs like this.”

Joliet is not the only town that has had to deal with the problem.

In Shorewood, parking space violators are fined whatever amount is shown on the parking space, ranging from $100 on up. Unlike Joliet, which maintains a uniform rate across the city, Shorewood fines are determined by the individual business.

The village can write tickets up to $500 if it finds someone misusing a handicapped parking placard, Deputy Police Chief Eric Allen said.

“It’s enough of a problem that we remind officers on a regular basis to keep an eye out, but it’s no worse of a problem than its been in recent years,” Allen said. “If it

does come up, we will increase enforcement in an area, but nothing has come up of late.”

Still, violations occur. Allen said it isn’t for a lack of available parking.

“There’s not a spot in Shorewood where you have to walk more than 100 yards, or even 50 yards, to get to a store,” Allen said. “People do it out of sheer laziness.”

In Plainfield and New Lenox, fines are a standard $250.

In Wilmington, fines can range from $25 to $750, with larger penalties assessed against repeat offenders. In Morris, fines range from $100 to $750 Whether the increased fines in Joliet will result in greater compliance still is anyone’s guess.

Jim Hock, Joliet’s city manager, expressed concern that the $500 penalty could actually lead to fewer people paying the fine, which would cause the city to take them to collections.

But Arellano said he was “delighted” by the $500 fine.

“I thought $350 would be acceptable to the council but if that’s what the maximum state level is, you may as well go along with it,” Arellano said.

Four types of placards are available: n Meter-Exempt Permanent Placards – Issued to persons with permanent disabilities who have significant impairments that cause difficulty in accessing a parking meter. Users do not have to pay parking meter fees. n Non Meter-Exempt Permanent Placards – Allows a disabled person to park in a space, although they still have to pay meter fees. n Temporary Placards – Issued to persons with a temporary disability and are valid for the length of time indicated by the certifying physician. Temporary placards through the Secretary of State are good for six months, while those issued by a local municipality last 90 days. The placard allows the user a place to park, but they must still pay meter fees. n Organization Placards – Issued to organizations that transport persons with disabilities free of charge and expire on April 30, 2018. The placard allows the user a place to park, but they must still pay meter fees.

District 202 offering new online tool for parents

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – As of Tuesday, parents in Plainfield School District 202 will be able to see what their children are learning and directly connect with teachers through a new online tool.

Through Blackboard, teachers will have the ability to create their own web portal where parents will have access to a “one-stop communications shop.”

Information included in the websites include contact

information, class work, student photos, class calendars, homework, learning resources, online communications tools and links to middle and high school grades.

“This new tool is part of our work to find new ways to connect our parents, teachers and students through technology,” Superintendent Lane Abrell said in a news release.

“Our teachers are very excited about this great new opportunity, and we’re anxious to see how they use it in their classrooms.”

The personal teacher websites were created while the district was working to strengthen its digital security following a cyber attack that sent crude emails to thousands of job applicants in 2012.

Teachers have the ability to put what they want on the websites.

will use it,” Hernandez said, adding that 1,400 teachers have been trained in creating the new websites.

Hernandez said the original plan was to wait for every teacher to get trained. But teachers told administrators its better to keep the momentum going through this semester into next semester, so the tool is helpful.

Hernandez said the next step was to expand the teachers websites so students can hold conversations about classwork on the website, along with other capabilities.

VIEWS Kris Stadalsky MINOOKA – Calling all former Minooka Grade School District 201 students who attended Walnut Trails Elementary School. Your former teachers and administrators are looking for you.

No, there are no long-lost books to return or detentions to serve. But the school would like to hear what you’ve been doing since you left and include your information in a special display celebrating the school’s 10th anniversary.

Walnut Trails opened in August 2004 to serve Shorewood students residing in District 201 in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

Since the Intermediate school opened, Walnut Trails now serves students through the fourth grade.

Kathleen Cheshareck was and still is the school’s first principal. Librarian Mary Lou Romashko still is at Walnut Trails as well, although now she shares her time between there and Jones Elementary School.

Cheshareck and Romashko came up with a great way to celebrate the school’s 10th anniversary and have combined it with their annual Octoberfest.

During the past few years Walnut Trails has held Octoberfest as a school and community get-together, Romashko said. There would be family games, a bounce house and refreshments.

This year, to celebrate the anniversary, officials are asking former students to go online to the school’s website and fill out a questionnaire about what they are doing.

Some students will now be in college or even starting families, she said.

“We are proud of our school and what we have

done in the last 10 years,” Romashko said. “It’s been a really neat place to be.”

Walnut Trails is very community oriented, Cheshareck said. It partners with Shorewood police, who are a visible presence in the school during arrival and departure times and keep the school safe. The Troy Fire Protection District provides fire prevention programs and is on hand for fire drills.

They work closely with Shorewood Glen retirement community, Cheshareck said. Volunteers, many of whom are former educators, help out in the classroom on a weekly basis.

Minooka High School art students come each year to paint a new mural at Walnut Trails to enhance the hallways.

“The development of key school-family-community partnerships has resulted in improved learning for all of our students,” Cheshareck said.

Having such pride in their school is what brought Cheshareck and Romashko to the idea of getting in touch with former students, all of whom are welcome to attend Octoberfest from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 17.

Students who want to share their information and even a photo can log onto the school district’s website at www.min201.org by Oct. 15.

Former Joliet woman was beyond generous

According to her obituary, Jennie also served as president of the Women of Rotary and as deaconess and elder at the First Presbyterian Church in Joliet. Jennie also was a member of the Madera Canyon DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution), Connie said, as well as the Colonial Dames.

“She was just a larger than life person,” Connie said.

Connie recalled one night when Jennie and Connie’s mother-in-law had gone to dinner at Syl’s Restaurant and Lounge in Rockdale. After the two women entered their car, a man approached them and demanded their purses.

Jennie talked him into settling for $20.

“She just kept on and on until the man finally took the $20 and left,” Connie said.

“That was just the kind of person she was.”

JOLIET – After former Joliet resident Jennie Mariner died June 1 at the age of 92, she left $1.8 million to the Silver Cross Foundation in New Lenox.

Hospital officials said in a news release that the gift was unforeseen but that Mariner was a regular donor who also was involved in several fundraising efforts at Silver Cross over the years. The donation will be used to help pay for the new hospital, which opened in 2012 when Silver Cross moved from its Joliet campus, hospital officials said.

Jennie also left $1.8 million to Iowa State University – where she had studied food service – and provided college funds for all nine of her grandchildren, said Connie Swinfin of Michigan, Jennie’s cousin by marriage.

But that was typical Jennie.

“She was so giving,” Connie said, “and if you were friends with her, you were friends for life. She [still] had friends from grade school.”

Connie recalled a woman who lived in the same Arizona retirement community as Jennie did. When Jennie learned that the woman could not afford to stay, Jennie anonymously made arrangements with the management compa-

ny to assume the cost.

“The lady never knew,” Connie said. “Jenny did not want to make a big deal of it.”

Born in Joliet, Jennie’s father’s mother was the daughter of the man who founded Barrett’s Hardware.

Jennie’s other grandfather built many of Joliet’s historic houses, Connie said. Jennie was always proud of her Joliet heritage, Connie added.

Jennie wanted to use her food service degree to work in test kitchens. When that didn’t happen, Jennie prepared menus for the University of Illinois on Navy Pier. She eventually met and married George Mariner, owner of Rainbo Bakery, and never again worked an outside job, Connie said.

Instead, Jennie threw her energies into Silver Cross Hospital because, Connie said, Jennie thought it was a good use of her time.

Jennie became the first woman elected to Silver Cross Hospital’s Board of Trustees.

She also served as the president of Childerguild – a foundation to benefit the hospital’s obstetrics and pediatrics departments – and was active in the hospital’s Encore Shop, the hospital’s resale store, Connie said.

Some people, Connie said, had assumed Jennie would be the token female on the

This article is the 2nd in a series of short histories of the Shorewood area. Although many residents have always known the name of their village as Shorewood, those with family that helped settle the area may remember it was once called Troy.

Families with a long-standing history in the community might recall an area called Grinton. According to a Rural Historic Structural Survey of Joliet and Troy Townships, created for the Will County Land Use Department and Will County Historic Preservation Commission, Grinton became the nucleus for a resort and fishing community, incorporated as the village of Shorewood in 1957.

According to the report, Grinton developed around a mill on the DuPage River. William Grinton, an early settler, constructed a three-story water-powered flour mill in 1845.

The mill would have been located behind where the old Ski and Bike Chalet used to be,

308 E. Jefferson St., in Shorewood.

Nearby the mill were two blacksmith shops, one wagon shop, a horeshoe shop and two saloons. The report stated that while the area was known as Grinton, it was also sometimes called Grintonville or Grinton’s Mill, even after Grinton sold it to J. I. Mather.

The area was also home to a factory for converting wool into cards, built by the McEvoys in 1848 or 1849, according to a history of Troy Township and its schools, compiled by Carol Hanan.

In the late 1880s, when use of the Illinois and Michigan Canal slowed and more freight traffic began using railroads, Grinton struggled and eventually failed, according to the report. By the 1920s, plat maps identified the small settlement of Grinton as Troy, after the township. Remains of Grinton still exist along the river under the Route 59 bridge.

Kathy Miranowic, marketing manager for HomeAgain (public.homeagain.com), said HomeAgain has reunited 14,000 pets with their owners since the company began in 1997, all because of microchipping and HomeAgain’s network of more than 1 million volunteers and 15,000 veterinarians nationwide.

To make that happen, owners need to register the microchip with the pet’s information – don’t rely on the veterinarian to do it for you, although some vets do provide that service – update the address and contact information when that changes, Miranowic said.

However, a microchip is not a tracking device, said Susan Taney, director of Lost Dogs of Illinois (www.lostdogsillinois.org), as some owners mistakenly think. It’s simply an effective identification tool.

“It’s amazing how many people think a microchip is a GPS,” Taney said.

But because all our cats were microchipped when they were kittens, the miracle had occurred. We would get Hope back.

To help ensure all pets are microchipped, the nonprofit Lost Dogs Illinois has partnered with Joliet Township Animal Control, www.joliettownship.net/animalcontrol. html, to offer free microchips to the first 50 dogs at JTAC’s microchipping clinic scheduled for Saturday.

Cats and additional dogs will be microchipped at the discounted price of $15, said Susan Taney, director of Lost Dogs Illinois.

Keeping our fur babies healthy and homed has been challenging ever since we lost our Channahon home last fall.

Two of them – Midnight and Faith – moved with me into a Joliet apartment and the other two – Frances and Hope – went to my son’s apartment in Morris.

That’s when the trouble began. Frances and Hope would not stay put. Our cats were accustomed to roaming around our Invisible Fence-protected yard and disliked confinement.

Eventually, Frances escaped and then “adopted” Amy Pilz, who is providing a temporary home for Frances. Hope, however, did not turn up.

We called Grundy County Animal Control. We called HomeAgain, the company with Hope’s microchip information, which sent out an alert. We ran Hope’s photo on Facebook, which is how we found Frances. We even set out a humane trap on the apartment fire escape, but someone stole

it and threw Hope’s food bowl and blanket in a dumpster.

In the meantime, Hope found herself a new home. One July night, Jim Bokus of Morris heard a cat crying outside.

Bokus’ cat, 20, a former stray Bokus adopted 15 years ago, had recently died. So Bokus opened the door, petted Hope and then fed her. Hope hung around his apartment all weekend, he said.

On Sunday, Bokus and his wife left Hope outside for six hours while they ran errands.

She was nowhere in sight when they returned, so Bokus assumed she had gone home, until later that day, when Bokus happened to open the door.

Because Hope was wellgroomed, Bokus assumed she had an owner, but he could not feel the microchip. Almost three months later, Bokus took Hope to Skinner Animal Clinic for a check-up. A quick scan revealed the microchip.

To the Electors of the State of Illinois: The purpose of a state constitution is to establish a structure for government and laws. There are three ways to initiate change to the Illinois Constitution: (1) a constitutional convention may propose changes to any part; (2) the General Assembly may propose changes to any part; or (3) a petition initiative may propose amendments limited to structural and procedural subjects contained in the Legislative Article. The people of Illinois must approve any changes to the Constitution before they become effective.

PROPOSED AMENDMENT TO SECTION 8.1 OF ARTICLE I OF THE ILLINOIS CONSTITUTION ARTICLE I – BILL OF RIGHTS SECTION 8.1. CRIME VICTIMS’ VICTIM’S RIGHTS. (a) Crime victims, as defined by law, shall have the following rights as provided by law: (1) The right to be treated with fairness and respect for their dignity and privacy and to be free from harassment, intimidation, and abuse throughout the criminal justice process.

(2) The right to notice and to a hearing before a court ruling on a request for access to any of the victim’s records, information, or communications which are privileged or confidential by law.

(3) (2) The right to timely notification of all court proceedings.

(4) (3) The right to communicate with the prosecution.

(5) (4) The right to be heard at any post-arraignment court proceeding in which a right of the victim is at issue and any court proceeding involving a post-arraignment release decision, plea, or sentencing. make a statement to the court at sentencing.

(6) (5) The right to be notified of information about the conviction, the sentence, the imprisonment, and the release of the accused.

(7) (6) The right to timely disposition of the case following the arrest of the accused.

(8) (7) The right to be reasonably protected from the accused throughout the criminal justice process.

(9) The right to have the safety of the victim and the victim’s family considered in denying or fixing the amount of bail, determining whether to release the defendant, and setting conditions of release after arrest and conviction.

(10) (8) The right to be present at the trial and all other court proceedings on the same basis as the accused, unless the victim is to testify and the court determines that the victim’s testimony would be materially affected if the victim hears other testimony at the trial.

(11) (9) The right to have present at all court proceedings, subject to the rules of evidence, an advocate and or other support person of the victim’s choice.

(12) (10) The right to restitution. (b) The victim has standing to assert the rights enumerated in subsection (a) in any court exercising jurisdiction over the case. The court shall promptly rule on a victim’s request.

The victim does not have party status. The accused does not have standing to assert the rights of a victim. The court shall not appoint an attorney for the victim under this Section. Nothing in this Section shall be construed to alter the powers, duties, and responsibilities of the prosecuting attorney The General Assembly may provide by law for the enforcement of this Section. (c) The General Assembly may provide for an assessment against convicted defendants to pay for crime victims’ rights. (d) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section creates a cause of action in equity or at law for compensation, attorney’s fees, or damages against the State, a political subdivision of the State, an officer, employee, or agent of the State or of any political subdivision of the State, or an officer or employee of the court. or in any law enacted under (e) Nothing in this Section or any law enacted under this Section shall be construed as creating (1) a basis for vacating a conviction or (2) a ground for any relief requested by the defendant appellate relief in any criminal case.

EXPLANATION The Constitution sets forth substantial rights for crime victims. The proposed amendment expands certain current rights: 1) Victims are currently entitled to fairness and respect throughout the criminal justice process. The amendment would also provide that they shall be protected from harassment, intimidation and abuse.

2) Victims currently can make a statement to the court when a criminal defendant is sentenced to punishment. The amendment would allow a victim to be heard at any proceeding that involves the victim’s rights, and any proceeding involving a plea agreement, release of the defendant or convicted individual, or sentencing.

3) Victims may obtain information about conviction, sentencing, imprisonment or release. The amendment would require prosecutors and the court to notify victims of those events before they happen.

The amendment would also grant additional rights to crime victims: 1) A victim would have a right to formal notice and a hearing before the court rules on any request for access to the victim’s information which is privileged or confidential information.

2) A victim would have the right to have the judge consider the victim’s safety and the safety of his or her family before deciding whether to release a criminal defendant, setting the amount of bail to be paid before release, or setting conditions of release after arrest or conviction.

3) The victim would have the right to assert his or her rights in any court with jurisdiction over the criminal case, but would not have the same rights as the prosecutor or the criminal defendant and the court could not appoint an attorney for the victim at taxpayer expense.

The proposed amendment would not alter the powers, duties or responsibilities of the prosecutor. Further, a criminal defendant would not be able to challenge his or her conviction on the basis of a failure to follow these provisions.

OBITUARIES WILLIAM R. DESALVO William R. DeSalvo, age 66, of Shorewood, passed away September 26, 2014, at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center.

Survived by his loving wife of 42 years, Diane (Verchimak) DeSalvo; daughter, Nicole DeSalvo (Mark) Delsing; and future first grandchild due November 2014. Step mother, Margaret DeSalvo; sisters, Kim Bozych, Patsy Vining; brother, Robert Kargle; sister-in-law, Mary Jo (Paul) Mott; brothers-in-law, Andrew Verchimak and Jeffrey Verchimak.

Numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins also survive.

Preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Mary (Shields) DeSalvo; his father-in-law, Andrew and Betty (Oser) Verchimak Kristofer.

Bill was retired from Citgo Oil Refinery. In his retirement; he enjoyed his love of music and the companionship of his many wonderful friends.

She was raised in Coal City; graduated from Coal City HS, and went on to earn her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from the University of Illinois. Mary began her teaching career in Hinsdale and later gained employment with Garfield Elementary School in Morris, where she taught 2nd grade for many years until retiring.

FRANK J. FAVICCHIO, JR. Frank J. Favicchio, Jr., age 68, of Elwood, formerly of New Lenox, passed away peacefully at his home with family at his side on September 27, 2014, after a long courageous battle with cancer.

Frank was a lifelong union member retiring from the Teamsters Locals 179 & 734. He was the true definition of an outdoorsman; his adventures included fishing, hunting, and boating. He especially enjoyed the ocean as he was born in Acushnet, Massachusetts. Frank’s other interests included trains, antique cars, the Blackhawks, and he was an avid lifelong White Sox Fan. Above all, Frank was a husband, dad, papa, and big papa, he took pride in those titles and he will be dearly missed.

She earned her Bachelor’s Degree at the College of St. Francis (University of St. Francis) in Joliet, IL. Sister Sharon began her teaching ministry in 1949 at St. Peter Grade School in Mansfield, Ohio. Her 39 years as a primary teacher took her to Payne, Ohio, St. Raymond’s in Joliet, Our Lady of Grace in Muskegon, Michigan and culminated with 20 years at Corpus Christi Parish in Columbus, Ohio. After leaving the field of education, Sister ministered as an office assistant and receptionist before retiring from active ministry in 2000. She continued to minister as a pastoral visitor to senior members of her parish community in Columbus.

One day in the prison visiting room, he and Gabriel discussed their tumultuous upbringing.

Gabriel had returned from Iraq with a Bronze Star and post-traumatic stress disorder. When Eddie revealed he’d been depressed, angry and sleepless, his brother said it also sounded very much like PTSD. “Eddie, actually there were some nights that growing up

as a kid living in Little Village was probably worse or equally as bad as Iraq,” he remembers Gabriel saying.

That notion is supported by research that has concluded kids in violent communities endure trauma similar to soldiers. “They’re in combat zones as well,” said Grady Osten-Garner, a psychologist tracking participants in Urban Warriors at the Adler Professional School of Psychology, a partner in the project.

Bocanegra turned his life around after serving 14 years in prison. He’s working on his master’s degree in social work at the University of Chicago.

He’s also co-executive director of youth safety and violence prevention at the YMCA of Metro Chicago, where he focuses on the psychological impact of brutality on kids in gang-ravaged communities.

“Just because we don’t see an injury doesn’t mean an injury doesn’t exist,” he said.

“How do we better understand why they’re doing what they’re doing?”

Born in Standard, Illinois and a Joliet resident for most of her life. She was a member of the Joliet Moose Lodge # 300 and a former member and past president of the Sheridan School PTA. CHICAGO – Jorge Maya sat in a circle at his neighborhood YMCA, a sturdy Afghanistan vet listening to a group of boys scarred by gang violence.

There was Sammy, 16, who could describe the times he’d dodged gunfire, once ducking behind a tree.

Anderson, 17, who’d been around gangs most of his life.

By his teens, he was carrying knives and bricks for protection.

And 14-year-old Fernando, who was just 12 when a pistol-wielding kid killed his friend.

Maya’s own story was much the same. He’d grown up on the same streets, faced the same dangers, known the same temptations. He’d escaped Little Village, the largely Mexican community that had been home. He eventually joined the Army, trading one violent place for another, a war zone far away. And when he returned, he felt lost.

Now he was at the Y, sitting with other vets and these teens, the two groups bound by a history of violence and trau-

ma – on distant battlefields, nearby street corners or both.

They were the first class of a new YMCA-sponsored pilot program, Urban Warriors.

For a dozen Saturdays, the two generations opened their hearts and minds, the vets finding new purpose after the war, the kids drawing guidance from mentors who understood their lives.

“I told them I’ve been through tough times,” Maya says. “I’ve been shot. I dropped out of high school. I’d say, ‘Look man, you can do something different with yourself.

If I can do it, you can, too.’ ...

There is hope.”

••• The idea for Urban Warriors came from a prison meeting five years ago between two brothers, Eddie and Gabriel Bocanegra.

Eddie had joined a gang at age 14, seeing it as a way to protect his younger brothers and sisters. “I thought ... I’d have a say-so. I’d have a right in the community. I’d have a voice,” he said.

Instead, he fatally shot someone he mistakenly thought had seriously wounded two gang friends, ending

Director Millsaps takes support of West athletics to new level

gers’ fortunes since the split of the Joliet Township co-op program, he admits he’s always learning about each of the sports that are under his supervision.

“When you only play a certain number of sports, you’re not an expert in all of the sports,” Millsaps said. “So this gave me a better idea of what teams are trying to do and how they’re trying to coach and what the strategy is behind it. I’m not very good at swimming, so my coach tried to coach me into becoming a better swimmer. And it was also a good way to promote all of the sports via Twitter by

being out at a practice.

“Some things were tough, like trying to run half-mile repeats in the humidity in cross country. But I was able to complete all of the workouts, and I think that the kids respected that. I wasn’t trying to be the best player out there – I was just trying to complete it. I try to be an example and a leader for my coaches in trying different things. I think seeing their athletic director doing stuff like this gets them motivated to be more involved.”

Having grown up in this area and being a part of some successful programs, Mill-

saps hopes to bring those experiences to his job at West as he continues the building process.

“Going to Joliet Catholic and Lewis and coaching at Providence before coming to Joliet Township 13 years ago, I’ve seen many different coaches and schools and have been able to bring some of that here,” Millsaps said.

“We want all of our coaches and students to know about ‘Tiger Pride,’ about trying to have an identity. The school atmosphere has been awesome, and the student body has been supportive and calls themselves ‘The Wild West.’

“A lot of this job is marketing, branding and promoting, and I love doing that. We have great kids, and the community needs to see that. This is a great community, and I’ve been here my whole life, so I just want people to see that.

It’s about showcasing all of the sports, not just football. I was amazed at how hard our kids work. We’re in a tough conference, so sometimes they work their butts off and might not see the end result on the scoreboard.”

Although Millsaps concedes even a sport he knows very well – such as football – proved to be tough, his most difficult practices came in cross country, soccer and swimming. But regardless of the challenges, the Tigers AD said he has enjoyed taking part in it.

“At first I think the kids thought, ‘This guy’s nuts,’ ” Millsaps said. “But after that, I think they respected that I continued to work hard and did all of the sprints and the workouts. I didn’t want to disrupt any of the practices. In the first few minutes, I think the kids thought, ‘What is this goofball doing?’ But when they saw that I was trying, the kids latched on to it, and some of them were trying to teach me different things.”

JOLIET – Steve Millsaps is the type of athletic director who doesn’t just talk a good game. He makes it clear he will do whatever he can to promote Joliet West athletics.

That’s why it should come as no big surprise that the fifth-year Tigers AD was excited about the idea of participating in a practice with each of his varsity teams – a process he recently completed and intends to continue during the winter and spring seasons.

“There was an article in an athletic director’s magazine that my buddy, Lockport coach Andy Satunas, sent to me last year about an athletic director who did this, and I thought that it was a good idea,” Millsaps said. “Since I’m young enough, I thought that I could still do it because I try to work out every day.

And obviously, it’s kind of a different way to evaluate my coaches and to also build relationships with the kids.

“In the article on the Michigan athletic director who did this, he used a bike for cross country and some other modifications. But I was trying to do exactly what the kids were doing. It was definitely worthwhile, and I stayed healthy through the fall, so hopefully I can do the same in the winter and the spring. I was always worried about hurting a knee. I wasn’t worried about hurting my muscles; it was more about the lateral movements.”

Little things make a big difference

By MARK POTASH mpotash@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Bears tight end Martellus Bennett didn’t just think he got in the end zone on the final play of the first half. He knows he did.

“Yeah, I did score,” he said with certainty when asked about the pass he caught at the goal line as the final seconds elapsed in the first half and the Bears trailing the Packers, 21-17.

“I stuck the ball across the goal line – which is the first time I ever tried to do that – but the referee told me on the replay they couldn’t see it because the [Packers player] blocked [their view].”

And likewise, wide receiver Josh Morgan thought he had scored when he caught a short pass from Jay Cutler inside the 10 and headed for the pylon in the first quarter. After he was ruled out at the 1-yard line, the offense sputtered and the Bears settled for a field goal. If only he had tried to stick the ball over the goal line …

“I actually thought I was in the end zone,” Morgan said. “It was a misjudgment on my part. If I knew I was that close, I would have probably have tried to run [the defender] over or did more. But I was running and I thought

I had a good angle to the pylon. Even if he pushed me out, I was still running past the pylon with the ball.”

It was one of those days at Soldier Field. The Bears’ defense deserves most of the blame for a 38-17 loss to the Packers that dropped them to 2-2 on the season. But an inefficient offense against a defense that does not rank among the best in the NFL left a lot of room to wonder just how close are the Bears and Jay Cutler are to realizing their potential.

The Bears gained 496 yards and scored 17 points against the Packers.

That’s tied for the most yards gained by the Bears in a loss since 1947. The Packers and Aaron Rodgers gave the Bears and Cutler an expensive lesson in how to get the job done. The Packers scored five touchdowns and 38 points on only 47 plays against the Bears. It’s either the difference between Mike McCarthy and Marc Trestman or Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler – you make the call.

The Bears leave themselves such a small margin for error, they need fortuitous calls (like the gift Alshon Jeffery got on a deep ball against the Jets last week) and short fields (like the two Kyle Fuller gave them against the 49ers two weeks ago) to win

games. They didn’t get the calls or the takeaways against the Packers and the result was predictable.

The Cutler-to-Bennett play at the end typified the Bears’ plight. After Rodgers threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Randall Cobb for a 21-17 lead with 1:03 left in the half, Cutler hit Bennett for completions of 26 and 27 yards to drive the Bears to the Packers 9 with 14 seconds left.

Cutler missed Brandon Marshall on first down. With nine seconds left and four receivers running vertical routes, Cutler threw to Bennett over the middle at the goal line. Bennett’s leg broke the plane, but NFL rules stipulate the ball must do so for a touchdown.

Whether or not Bennett actually scored, it was a risky play for an offense that aspires to be as good as the Packers and Saints. “I liked the call.

I liked the throw,” Cutler said. “The defender made a heck of a play.”

That’s the problem. In a mature offense, Cutler throws to a wideopen Bennett all alone in the actual end zone, where the defender has no chance to make a heckuva play. But the Bears aren’t there yet. After this game, the question is: How long before they get there?

The Bears didn’t register a hit on Aaron Rodgers, much less record a sack, in a vintage performance by the Packers’ franchise QB, who was barely moved from his spot while throwing almost as many touchdowns (four) as incompletions (six) in a 38-17 victory Sunday at Soldier Field.

“We didn’t get the kind of pass rush we needed today, said Trestman, whose plan to generate pressure primarily with four rushers failed. “When Aaron was in the pocket, he was able to … get done what he needed to.”

“The protection was great,” said Rodgers. “I barely got touched most of the day, which will be nice with a short week coming up.”

49ers escape in week 4, top Eagles THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SANTA CLARA, Calif.

– Frank Gore caught a career-best 55-yard touchdown and ran for 119 yards in his first 100-yard game this year, leading the San Francisco 49ers past Philadelphia, 26-21, on Sunday to hand the Eagles their first loss.

The 49ers delivered a late goal-line stand as they avoided their first three-game losing streak under fourth-year coach Jim Harbaugh, containing the league’s top passer in Nick Foles. He threw two incomplete passes from the 1 in the waning moments.

On a day the 49ers (2-2) gave up big plays on special teams, Gore came through. Colin Kaepernick also threw a touchdown pass to Stevie Johnson and Phil Dawson kicked four field goals.

Darren Sproles had a career-best 82-yard punt return for a touchdown, Malcom Jenkins ran an interception 53 yards for a score for the Eagles (3-1). Brad Smith recovered a blocked punt for a TD.

Buccaneers 27, Steelers 24: Mike Glennon hit a diving Vincent Jackson for a 5-yard touchdown with 7 seconds remaining to lift Tampa Bay to a stunning win at Pittsburgh.

The Buccaneers (1-3) lost to Atlanta by six touchdowns a week ago but bounced back against the Steelers (2-2). Glennon passed for 302 yards in his first start of the season, including a 41-yard catch-and-run

by Louis Murphy that set up Jackson’s score.

Ravens 38, Panthers 10: Steve Smith punished his former team with seven catches for 139 yards and two touchdowns at Baltimore. Smith spent 13 seasons with Carolina (2-2) before he was released in a cost-cutting move during the offseason.

The 35-year-old receiver showed the Panthers he can still make the big play, scoring twice in the second quarter to help put Baltimore (3-1) in front 21-7 at halftime.

The first touchdown came when Smith grabbed a pass that deflected off the right hand of teammate Owen Daniels. He caught the ball in stride and took it into the end zone to complete a 61-yard play.

Smith also scored from 21 yards with a diving reception.

Chargers 33, Jaguars 14: Philip Rivers threw for 377 yards and three touchdowns, two to Eddie Royal, at San Diego.

Royal had scoring catches of 47 and 43 yards, his second

straight two-touchdown game.

The Chargers (3-1) extended their winning streak to three, the the Jaguars dropped to 0-4.

Passing because the Chargers’ running game is nonexistent because of injuries to Ryan Mathews and Danny Woodhead, Rivers had his second three-touchdown game of the season. He went 29 of 39.

Royal had five catches for 105 yards. Keenan Allen had 10 for 135, both career highs, and Malcom Floyd had a 24-yard touchdown catch.

Vikings 41, Falcons 28: Teddy Bridgewater passed for 317 yards and a key 2-point conversion in Minneapolis before leaving with an ankle injury.

The rookie was 19 for 30 with no turnovers and ran five times for 27 yards and a score in his first career start for the Vikings (2-1).

Matt Asiata powered his way in on the next play for his third touchdown, and Bridgewater stayed in to zip a crisp pass to Rhett Ellison to push the lead to 35-28 over Atlanta (2-2).

As Bridgewater was taken away on a cart for X-rays, Christian Ponder took over at quarterback for the Vikings (2-1).

The Falcons lost three starting offensive linemen to

injuries and wound up sticking tight end Levine Toilolo at right tackle in the fourth quarter.

Texans 23, Bills 17: J.J. Watt had another highlight-reel play to help the Texans overcome a tough day offensively at home. Houston (3-1) was down by three in the third quarter and Ryan Fitzpatrick had just thrown a second interception when the 6-foot-5, 289-pound Watt returned an interception 80 yards to put the Texans up 14-10 over Buffalo (2-2).

The defensive end caught a touchdown pass in Week 2, giving him more TDs this year than Arian Foster and Andre Johnson combined.

Lions 24, Jets 17: Matthew Stafford threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score in East Rutherford, New Jersey, as the Lions overcame Calvin Johnson being limited by an ankle injury.

Jeremy Ross and Eric Ebron caught scoring passes for the Lions (3-1) over the Jets (1-3). Stafford finished 24 of 34 for 293 yards.

Johnson, who was in and out of the game, was clearly impeded by his injured ankle.

He had just two catches for 12 yards. Golden Tate had a big game, catching eight passes for 116 yards.

By DAN GELSTON The Associated Press DOVER, Del. – Jeff Gordon doused Team Penske’s hot streak with a champagne bath in Victory Lane. Sticky and sweet, Gordon had secured an emphatic automatic spot in the next round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

But Gordon’s entry in the field of 12 was all but guaranteed even before he dominated the closing laps Sunday at Dover International Speedway. What wasn’t so sure was that Hendrick Motorsports teammate Kasey Kahne would join him for the ride.

Kahne survived a bumpy 400 miles, falling four laps back be-

fore rallying for a 20th-place finish to nab the 12th and final spot in the field.

“Kasey made it a pretty long day,” owner Rick Hendrick said.

“We were watching the monitor at the end of the race hoping that we didn’t have a caution and Jeff could win it and Kasey could get in. I didn’t know exactly how close it was going to be until I watched that monitor.”

NASCAR tried to inject its 10-race Chase format with a revamped formula for crowning a champion this season. Under NASCAR’s elimination format, four drivers will be knocked out after every third race. Dover marked the third race.

That meant plenty of nerves all

around the track – and tons of scoreboard watching.

Kurt Busch, AJ Allmendinger, Greg Biffle and Aric Almirola were eliminated from championship contention. Four more drivers will drop out after the three-race segment that starts next week at Kansas Speedway.

Gordon joined Chase winners Brad Keselowski and Joey Logano as the three drivers who were guaranteed a berth in the next Chase round with victories.

“I think it makes a statement of what type of team we are,” Gordon said after his fourth win of the season and 92nd overall. “I think that it makes a statement that we’re a team to beat for this championship.”

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS SASKATOON, Saskatchewan – Scott Darling made 26 saves, and Garrett Ross and Teuvo Teravainen scored 54 seconds apart in the second period to lift the Blackhawks to a 5-0 victory over the Edmonton Oilers in a preseason game on Sunday.

Ross and Teravainen’s quick strikes gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead. Bryan Bickell scored in the first period, and Andrew Shaw and Kris Versteeg added goals in the third.

Versteeg scored after he was sent in on a breakaway against Oilers goalie Richard Bachman by a setup feed from Bickell.

Bachman made 17 saves for the Oilers.

The game was played in front of a crowd of 10,303 spectators at Saskatoon’s Credit Union Centre.

MILWAUKEE – The young Cubs finished 2014 with a flourish.

Anthony Rizzo had a two-run homer among his three hits, Arismendy Alcantara hit a tworun double, and the Cubs beat Milwaukee, 5-2, Sunday to take two out of three in their season-ending series.

The Cubs still finished in last place in the NL Central at 73-89 but were 31-28 since July 28.

The future looked bright on a sunny afternoon at Miller Park.

“I think, as an organization,

we all feel some momentum going into the offseason. And that’s what we need,” Rizzo said. “Not only the players, but the front office, as well.”

Rizzo went deep to center off Mike Fiers (6-5) in the first. He scored from third in a two-run sixth on Alcantara’s double just inside the first base line. Rizzo became the first Cub left-handed hitter with 32 homers since Rick Monday in 1976.

The Cubs have the building blocks of a solid offense with Rizzo and rookie hitters Javier Baez and Jorge Soler.

“There’s always optimism, and now you can see it around

everywhere. We each got to keep the course, though,” Rizzo said.

The loss culminated a frustrating five weeks for Milwaukee and its struggling offense.

Fifteen games over .500 on Aug. 25, the Brewers went 9-22 down the stretch and dropped out of the NL Central lead after a fivemonth reign. The Brewers finished in third place in the division at 82-80, out of the playoffs for the third straight year.

The Cubs’ Jacob Turner (611) allowed four hits and two runs in five-plus innings. He beat Milwaukee for the second time since being traded from Miami in August.

Rauner charitable giving veers left and right

SPRINGFIELD – Republican governor candidate Bruce Rauner and his wife, Diana, have given hundreds of thousands of dollars to protect abortion rights and the environment – traditionally seen as liberal causes.

Rauner, a wealthy Winnetka businessman, has given similar amounts to groups that advocate the privatization of Social Security and question climate change – traditionally conservative causes that Rauner says he does not support.

Rauner and his views are far less known to voters than those of his opponent, Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn. But the private equity investor has a long scorecard as a philanthropist, activist and political donor that sheds light on his views on particular issues, if not his overall philosophy and what he might do as chief executive.

Records examined by The Associated Press found that over the last two decades, the Rauner Family Foundation has given more than $19 million to charitable and philanthropic causes, many with political agendas, on both the left and right.

Fire damages or destroys 8 buildings in Rock Island

ROCK ISLAND – Fire ripped through downtown Rock Island early Saturday, destroying or damaging eight buildings.

The fire began just after 4 a.m. in a vacant building that was to be demolished Monday, officials said. The city’s chief building official said electricity and gas had been shut off just before the fire.

Sen. Durbin wants probe of air center sabotage

CHICAGO – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin said Sunday he will seek

an investigation into how a contract employee was able to sabotage a regional control center and bring Chicago’s two international airports to a halt.

Durbin told The Associated Press he will ask the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration to investigate whether there was a security breach when the employee entered the building early Friday with a suitcase without causing suspicion.

He started a fire in the basement telecommunications room before trying to commit suicide by slashing his throat.

Brian Howard, 36, of Naperville, who had access to the control center in Aurora via a swipe card, entered around 5 a.m. and about 30 minutes later posted a suicide note on Facebook, according to a federal complaint.

Bike sharing set to expand to Oak Park and Evanston

CHICAGO – The bicycle sharing program popular in Chicago is expanding to two suburbs.

Gov. Pat Quinn said Sunday the state will invest $3 million to help add 700 Divvy bikes and 70 docking stations in Evanston, Oak Park and more Chicago neighborhoods next year. The cities each will contribute a total $750,000 toward the expansion.

Fifty docking stations will go in Chicago’s Garfield Park, Austin, Rogers Park, West Rogers Park and other communities Oak Park will get 12 docking stations and Evanston.

Proponents said the program offers an eco-friendly and efficient alternative to driving.

The program began in Chicago in 2013.

Southern airport gets boost from recent grants

MURPHYSBORO – Officials are pursuing an improvement plan for the Southern Illinois Airport that will include new facilities and businesses, and reconstruction and realignment and better access to state highways.

Airport Manager Gary Shafer told the Southern Illinoisan that last week’s announcement of a $4.5 million state investment to develop an emergency and critical response center at the airport was a great step forward. Another $1.1 million in federal economic development money will help improve roads on the airfield’s southern end.

The development plan was presented to the airport board in October.

By KELVIN CHAN The Associated Press HONG KONG – Pro-democracy protests expanded in Hong Kong on Monday, a day after demonstrators upset over Beijing’s decision to limit political reforms defied onslaughts of tear gas and appeals from Hong Kong’s top leader to go home.

And with rumors swirling, Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying reassured the public that speculation the Chinese army might intervene was untrue.

“I hope the public will keep calm. Don’t be misled by the rumors. Police will strive to maintain social order, including ensuring smooth traffic and ensuring the public safety,” said the Beijing-backed Leung, who is deeply unpopular. He added, “When they carry out their duties, they will use their maximum discretion.”

The city’s transport department said that besides road closures in areas such as Causeway Bay, Wan Chai

and Admiralty – where the protests have been focused – main roads also have been blocked by demonstrators in Mong Kok. More than 200 bus routes have been canceled or diverted in a city dependent on public transport. Subway exits also been have closed or blocked near protest areas.

This week, let’s continue our look at deals with two suit fits.

When you have two unbalanced fits, say 5-3 and 6-2, which should you choose?

The guideline is: When all or most of the tricks must come from the two long suits, select the less evenly divided. This means that 6-2 will be better than 5-3. (This is also one time when a 5-3 fit will be better than a 4-4.) That rule is doubly true when the breaks are bad or you have relatively weak hands.

In today’s deal, NorthSouth will be contemplating a sacrifice over four hearts, which would make easily, West taking at least three spades, five hearts and two diamonds.

Should North-South pick five clubs or five diamonds?

South’s first-round call would cause debate. Many experts would advocate two no-trump, showing at least 5-5 in the unbid suits. But some would prefer two diamonds, bidding the longer suit first and planning to bid clubs next time (at the five-level if necessary) to describe the 6-5.

This second plan works better here, because if South intervenes with two no-trump, North will prefer five clubs to five diamonds. Note, though, that after two rounds of hearts, declarer is in big trouble. The defenders will keep playing on hearts, and five clubs doubled will go down four.

In five diamonds doubled, though, West must lead an unlikely club at trick one to get the contract down three.

Dear Abby: I am a 35-yearold single man. Three years ago, I took legal custody of my niece (who is now 8) to prevent her from becoming a ward of the state. Her parents were drug addicts.

Shortly afterward, my mother moved in to help me raise her, which is greatly needed and appreciated.

The problem is, I had to dramatically alter my lifestyle – no more staying out late on weekends or impromptu trips to visit college buddies – and worst of all, an end to dating.

I used to go out with a lot of women, but I haven’t been with anyone in more than two years. I didn’t like the idea of bringing ladies around my niece whom she might never see again. It was easier to just give up dating than to deal with her questions and looks of confusion. She has had enough instability in her young life, and I didn’t want to add to it.

Now I’m starting to get lonely, and I’m not sure how to get back into the dating scene. How would I explain my living situation to a potential wife: “I have a kid and my mother living with me, and that’s not going to change. Interested?”
