Cutting Building Joliet The Romanesque Revival style was introduced in the United States in the mid-19 century, as architectural ideas from Europe, based on buildings of ancient Rome, were imported here.

American architect Henry Hobson Richardson embraced this style in the 1870s and 1880s, and developed a more dramatic version of this concept with bolder, wider arches and strong sculptural forms.

Interest in this new innovative style began to appear in many public buildings and residential mansions in the past few decades of the 19th century. After Richardson’s death in 1886, architects and builders continued to construct buildings that incorporated his unique style.

Buildings of the Romanesque Revival style are most easily identified by their unique qualities, including pronounced round arches, cavernous entryways, window openings, and heavy, massive stone or brick construction. Most have round towers with conical roofs, squat columns and decorative plaques with intricate or interlacing patterns. The Romanesque style especially was suited to churches, courthouses, schools, university buildings, prisons, train stations and other public buildings.

Locally, the Romanesque Revival style can be seen in the work of architect John H. Barnes. Barnes graduated from the University of Illinois in 1888, and began his career in Colorado. One of his first commissions was the Orlando Flats apartment building in

OLD POSTCARD IMAGES SOUGHT FOR PUBLICATION David Belden is a history teacher at Minooka Community High School and currently is publishing local postcard books with Arcadia Publishing in his Local History classes.

He and his students are looking for Denver, which, designed in a Romanesque Revival style, is considered one of the better surviving examples of late 19th century lower-income housing buildings.

After working out west, John Barnes arrived in Joliet in the early 1890s. Barnes was typical of many new architects of the era in that he probably was more of a self-taught builder than a professional architect.

After settling here, Barnes began a number of residential projects, particularly in the Upper Bluff District of the city, but also earned commissions for such local projects as the Farragut School and the Cut-

The Cutting Building, located at 19 West Jefferson St., was constructed in 1897, in the Romanesque Revival style.

The south-facing, rectangular, four-story building was built using brick structural material with a limestone foundation.

Many of Joliet’s 19th century buildings were built using Bedford limestone quarried in Indiana or dolomite limestone quarried from the Joliet area.

The light color Bedford limestone is cut from solid beds of rock, which makes it an excellent building block as it bears an enormous pressure as a weight-bearing element.

The facade of the building

is divided into two separate bays with rounded stone piers on the third and fourth floors.

The larger bay has a foliate designed pedimented parapet over a rounded arch that is situated over a pair of recessed round-arched windows. Decorative foliate designs also fill the area between the arch and the lintels.

The second and third floors are separated by a stone cornice that wraps around to the east side of the building.

While the upper floor’s windows are all similar to the original double-hung sash windows, the first floor entryway and storefront window has been altered.

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Roger Burns and Jody McQuarters created a comic book expo in Joliet without the flash of bigger conventions, opting to emphasize comics for people of all ages.

Saturday marked the inaugural Heroes Comic Book & Fantasy Art Expo at the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

Families and fans of inked superhero drama came from across the city and the Chicago area to shop for comics, rub shoulders with professional artists and learn to draw comics themselves.

Founders Burns and McQuarters wanted to put together an old-school convention, a throwback to the kind they used to visit when they were young.

“This isn’t like the mega conventions nowadays. This goes back to when we were kids,” McQuarters said.

Burns said the convention represents comic art across generations and cultures, with artists in the spotlight.

“Every convention starts with comic books and extends to sales. We want to put emphasis on the process of the artwork,” Burns said.

The expo was a two-day event featuring comic book sellers, artists, animators and lecturers. Children were invited to learn about the history of comics and dabble in drawing.

Most of the crowd was on the hunt for 21 of the worst comic book supervillains hiding in the museum display.

Finding them all earned a free prize drawing ticket.

Artist Mikey Babinski, who put forth a pencil drawing of Batman on Saturday at the expo, said other conventions put less emphasis on comics and more on celebrities and pop culture. The Jo-

John “Doc” Schaefer, a special events planner for Graham Crackers Comics, served as a comics historian at the convention. He said the weekend expo was similar to the kind he used to visit in the early 1970s.

He planned to give a lecture on the differences between collecting comics in the ’60s and today.

“We didn’t have the Internet or the variety of stores you see now. … It was harder but it was more rewarding,” Schaefer said.

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Some Lincoln-Way residents are cautious about district officials’ next move to pursue proposals for a forensic and external audit, which board President Kevin Molloy said could come with a hefty price tag for the financially ailing school district.

Residents dissatisfied with the board decision to close North high school in a bid to restore financial stability to the district gathered about 2,600 signatures demanding a forensic audit from fiscal years 2005 to 2016.

The issue of a school closing has caused state Sen. Mi-

chael Hastings, D-Tinley Park, to plan on filing legislation this week to make the process more transparent.

After a closed session meeting Thursday, board members unanimously agreed to pursue proposals for a forensic and external audit of district finances but did not specify a time frame.

Frankfort resident Elizabeth Burghard, who spoke at Thursday’s board meeting, said she is curious to see where this will lead.

“I have a feeling based on the past we’re going to hear how expensive this forensic audit is. … They’re going to come back to the community and say ‘Look, we’re already in financial distress,’ ” she

said.

Molloy is concerned about the cost. He said an external audit could cost about $25,000 a year to perform and a forensic audit could be four times as much. The expense of what residents are demanding in the petition could amount to $1 million, he said.

Although he voted in favor of Thursday’s measure, he said he didn’t think an external or forensic audit was necessary. Steven Langert, an interim business manager hired Sept. 10, and Ed McCormick, district audit supervisor, are doing a good enough job sifting through finances, he said.

“I truly think they could do a phenomenal job without the need to have this external

audit or the forensic audit brought in. I do believe that,” Molloy said.

He said the board gave district administrators direction Thursday to investigate the cost and need for a forensic and external audit. More information about both audits would be available at an October board meeting, he said.

North parent Todd Velky, who demanded resignations from all but two board members Thursday, said he’s waiting to hear more about the audit proposals but “for us taxpayers, this is a small victory.”

Transition update

District officials continue to move forward with preparing for the closure of North.

Superintendent Scott Tingley announced building administrators for East, Central and

West schools next fall.

He said interviews for department chair positions will be conducted in early October and for head coaches at the end of the month.

School closure legislation

Sen. Hastings said because of the anger from parents over recent decisions from Lincoln-Way and St. Charles School District 303 in St. Charles, he is proposing legislation this week to make the school closure process more transparent.

He said some school boards blame the state for financial woes, which he said is ill-advised and inappropriate.

“I think you’ll see this bill will put forth a process to give more transparency and give the public a voice,” Hastings said.

Charter Fitness will open at former Crest Hill T.J.Maxx building Former Hallmark, Dots lots also have new tenants

Charter Fitness will be opening a new workout facility in the vacant building at 1701 N. Larkin Ave., said Abe Katz, property owner of A&R Katz Management Inc. “The deal was finalized a couple months ago,” Katz said. “We’re doing [interior] demolition for the space, then turning it over.”

Charter Fitness will move into the original 22,740 square feet of the 28,740-square-foot building, he said. The remaining 6,000 square feet – originally part of an expansion by T.J.Maxx – will be leased to another

T.J.Maxx moved out in

spring 2014 into a new building at the intersection of Weber and Airport roads in Romeoville.

Former Community Development Director Amber Miller said at the time T.J.Maxx didn’t renew its lease in the Hillcrest Shopping Center because it was a bad location competing for market share with a nearby Marshalls store that opened six years ago, owned by the same company, The TJX Companies Inc. “I think that area is a key location,” said Scott McMaster, who handles economic development and zoning issues for the city. “Any business that gets involved in the shopping center are helping each other with traffic flow. It’s only a positive for anyone involved.”

The new Charter Fitness location, vacant for more than a year, has been difficult to market because of its size, Katz said.

“It’s a larger space,” he said. “That in itself is more difficult to market because

there are fewer players. We did have conversations with a number of other users, but Charter Fitness stepped up.”

Hillcrest development

Katz said more vacant lots have been filled in the Hillcrest Shopping Center.

Los Mangos, a Mexican ice cream and sandwich shop with seven other locations in the Chicago area, is moving into part of the old Rand’s Hallmark store, which will be split into two lots.

Los Mangos is opening in the coming weeks, Katz said.

The other lot will be rented out to another tenant.

The location has been vacant more than two years, since the Rand’s chain collapsed in June 2013.

A Mexican bakery, La Chicanita, also is moving into the Hillcrest Shopping Center at the former Dots location.

The bakery specializes in traditional Mexican products and made-to-order cakes, Katz said.

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – Two Minooka School District 201 principals met their match Friday when they had to smooch a pig during separate school assemblies.

Diesel, a female micro-mini pig owned by Minooka resident Hannah Kovel, showed up at the two schools dressed in her fall attire and blanket, not knowing what was in store for her.

The first assembly was at Jones Elementary School, with Principal Rodney Hiser kissing the pig gently on the forehead. Diesel was not happy and began to squeal, but after she calmed down, Hiser kissed her again and the kids roared, cheered and stomped.

Diesel then headed east and visited Principal Kathleen Cheshareck at Walnut Trails Elementary, and there too, in front of the school, Diesel received kisses.

All of this hoopla was to honor a promise to the students of both schools that if they read and logged a specific number of hours over the summer with the Scholastic

Summer Reading Challenge, each principal would kiss a pig.

“Mrs. Cheshareck and I were talking about a good incentive for the kids to read. She made a comment of things she would never do, and then said, ‘I would kiss a pig.’ I asked Mr. Hiser if he would do the same thing, so we found a pig through one of the aides at Jones,” librarian Mary Lou Romashko said.

“The main thing is that the minutes are increasing and the number of kids is, as well.

Kids are competitive so I think this may have helped.”

Romashko offered the program first at Walnut Trails in 2013 and after it was a success, at Jones in 2014.

The program runs May 4 to Sept. 4, with parents logging in times online for their children or giving them to Romashko to log.

Last year at Jones 14 students read 30,000 minutes and this year 48 students read 124,512 minutes, which put the school in the top 6 percent participating worldwide.

Walnut Trails hit a high of 200,045 minutes this summer, putting it in sixth place in Il-

linois and in the top 5 percent worldwide.

Top readers were recognized with prizes including a Kindle Fire and gift certificates donated by Scholastic.

At Jones Elementary, fourth-grader Briana Whalen won first place, reading 15,631 minutes. At Walnut Trails, fourth-grader Vivi Forte won with 18,300 minutes. Interestingly enough, both girls had the same favorite book series, Harry Potter, and favorite book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.”

Forte said she always has liked to read because books are happy, sad, fun and have cool endings. She said night is her favorite time to read.

“I usually stay up late at night and read in my room for two or more hours. My mom checks on me and tells me to go to bed, but I keep on reading,” Forte said.

Whalen said she “naturally likes to read” and can read anywhere, and chapter books are her favorite type of book.

She said this particular book is her favorite because “Harry doesn’t go back to school, instead he tries to find magical items.”

Board President Robert Wunderlich said trustees deliberated on who would occupy the seats during a special meeting Wednesday and made their final decision.

The seats were vacated by former board Chairwoman Tina Markley and trustee Barb Adams, both of whom unexpectedly resigned after Markley made critical comments about the board.

“It was close, very, very close,” Wunderlich said of the decision.

Channahon Village President Joe Cook and Lincoln-Way High School District 210 board member Christopher McFadden applied, as well.

Several current and former JJC employees have applied for a spot, such as Alicia Morales, who was a JJC financial aid adviser from 1997 to 2001, and Ronald Wojcik, an adjunct professor.

Donna Theimer, a former horticulture professor and department chairwoman, also applied.

They don’t pay their rent, they blast loud music, and they smuggle in pets.

They must go. But it can be a costly process to evict bad tenants, according to Tim McGinnis, partner and managing broker, at Celtic Property Management.

Celtic manages approximately 400 properties -- apartments, condos, and rental homes -- and averages about an eviction a month, despite a conscientious tenant screening process. That’s still well below the industry average of five percent, but it’s still problematic.

Celtic, advertises for prospective tenants through websites, newspapers, mailings, and signs. The prospective tenant submits an application, which is carefully reviewed to determine credit, employment and rental history and criminal background.

McGinnis says, One quarter of the applications are accepted after a thorough screening process.

“The goal is to keep the

properties occupied with the appropriate tenant. No one makes money if the building is unoccupied or being damaged by a tenant” McGinnis explains.

However, when tenants don’t observe the terms of their lease, problems arise.

For example, if tenants are late with their rent, they can receive a call or an email. If no response is received, a hand-delivered notice will begin the eviction process.

Some owners are hesitant to do an eviction because of the lengthy process and expense but, McGinnis says that it must be done.

Evictions start with a Five Day Notice followed by a court hearing. In cases where a tenant does not show up in court the owner receives immediate possession. If a tenant does not vacate in accordance with the judgment, the Sheriff is notified and a physical eviction is performed.

Tenants can avoid evictions if they just work out an approved payment plan.

WILMINGTON – A man charged in connection with a fatal dirt bike crash that happened during the weekend is the twin brother of the person who died in the incident.

Will County Sheriff’s Office Investigations Deputy Chief Rick Ackerson said Saturday that Casey Grskovic, 19, of Wilmington was charged with aggravated driving under the influence involving a death after Ross C. Grskovic, also 19 and of Wilmington, died after sustaining injuries in the collision.

Ackerson confirmed Sunday the two were twins.

Ross C. Grskovic was the driver of a dirt bike that was struck by another dirt bike

in the 23000 block of Widows Road in Wilmington Township, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Ross C. Grskovic was pronounced dead at 12:13 a.m.

Saturday at the emergency room of Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, according to the Coroner’s Office.

An autopsy was performed Saturday. Preliminary reports showed cranial cerebral injury because of the collision, according to the office. The final cause of death is pending autopsy, police and toxicological reports.

Ackerson said Casey Grskovic was taken after the crash to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center for injuries that were not life-threatening. He remained at the hospital Sunday afternoon.

PLAINFIELD – Coffee in the morning will soon make way for wine and beer in the evening at one Plainfield Starbucks.

The Starbucks at 23915 W. Main St. will become one of the select locations to offer the “Starbucks Evenings” experience.

That experience includes a menu of six different wines and between seven and 10 local craft beers, district manager Kim Hubbard said. The drinks will be served daily from 5 to 10 p.m. with only one drink allowed a patron an order.

“Specifically for this store, it has more of that community feel,” Hubbard said, adding Starbucks Evenings will make the store a place to spend time in the later hours.

Plainfield trustees approved Class E beer and wine and Class K outdoor seating licenses for the location last week.

Along with the alcoholic beverages, the store will serve small gourmet food plates, such as truffle macaroni and cheese, ranging from $4.95 to $6.95. Glasses of wine will range from $7 to $15 each, Hubbard said.

Hubbard said other nearby Starbucks locations that have started the program include stores in Burr Ridge and Yorkville. The Yorkville location at 1246 N. Bridge St. began serving its wine and beer menu last week.

Hubbard estimated the menu may become available sometime in January, February or March, but “the date changes all the time,” she said.

A good artist, a great man Joliet Township High School graduate remembered in perpetual scholarship

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Growing up, Marianne Miller of Algonquin said her older cousin, Robert Baher of Joliet, always was drawing and composing.

“I was about 10 when he had a song published – ‘I’d Rather Not Say,’ ” Marianne said and then sang some the lyrics, “I’d rather not say we’re through.

I’d rather go on loving you.”

Robert wrote, painted, played classical piano, founded a local writers group that ran for many years and held season tickets to the Lyric Opera of Chicago, Marianne said.

“He took me there for my 18th birthday,” she said. “He had a row of four seats on the main floor.”

Robert’s sister, Jeannette Konkel of Texas said she, Robert and the rest of their siblings grew up singing opera for fun, with Robert playing the piano.

Jeannette has copies of other songs Robert wrote and shared them with a friend who is a pianist.

“She played some of them for me,” Jeannette said. “They were good.”

Yet Robert never pursued a career in the arts. Instead, he worked his entire life at Joliet Pattern Works as its office manager, Marianne said.

Because Robert was a private person, few people outside his writers group – which he founded in the 1940s – ever read his work, Marianne said. At small gatherings of family and

friends, Robert occasionally brought a play he’d written and assigned parts for everyone to read aloud, she said.

Kathleen Zwart of Florida, Robert’s niece, said even after Robert moved into Willow Falls Senior Living Community in Crest Hill and held his writers group meetings Robert Baher there, he continued composing plays and assigning parts to the members. He also hosted elaborate themed parties for the group.

“He loved being creative and entertaining,” Kathleen said, “and having people enjoy life the way he did. ... He was truly a kind person.”

Kathleen has boxes of his short stories – about 200, all composed on a typewriter – that she hopes to publish. Robert did self-publish a novel, “Castrato.”

He also drew many cartoons in the style often seen in The New Yorker magazine, she said.

From 1994 to 1997, Marianne said Robert assisted the late Joliet artist Lillian Brulc in painting 10 murals as a tribute to the Slovenian community in Joliet. The murals are behind St. Joseph Catholic Church, where Robert was a lifelong member, Marianne said.

“Robert was a very modest person,” Marianne said. “All he would ever say – he was very humble – is that he painted between the lines.”

The paintings evoke Robert’s heritage. Robert’s mother’s parents both immigrated to the United States from Slovenia in the 1880s. Marianne said Robert’s father is believed to have traveled from New York to Michigan on an orphan train when he was about 12 years old.

Robert never married or had children, so he poured his devotion into his extended family, especially with gift-giving.

He sent out detailed questionnaires, requesting such information as favorite colors, jewelry and cologne.

“Who does that – send out questionnaires?” Kathleen said. “But he wanted to give things we loved.”

In 2001, Marianne gave Robert something he loved: She started a perpetual scholarship at Joliet Township High School – where Robert had graduated in 1939 – in Robert’s name. A comment Robert made one day gave Marianne the idea.

“He said to me one day while he was writing, ‘You have your children and your grandchildren so people will know you were here,’” Marianne said. “ ‘When I die, no one will know I was here. So I write my plays so people will remember.’ ” Robert was 92 when he died April 21. Donations may be made in his memory to the Robert J. • Dylan S. Brown, 19, of the 1200 block of West Marion Street in Joliet, was arrested by Joliet police Wednesday on charges of drug possession, marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Legislative report finds gambling at a slowdown in Illinois

Sheriff seeks discipline for 2 after fatal chase

DEKALB – Two DeKalb County law enforcement officers are facing a formal inquiry and possible discipline for how they handled a high-speed pursuit that ended in a fatal crash.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office’s Merit Commission met Saturday to review the case, which involves a deputy and her husband, who is a sergeant and was her supervisor the night of the crash.

The DeKalb Daily Chronicle reported the hearing focused on their conduct, including an initial sheriff’s department news release on the crash that didn’t mention a sheriff’s deputy was chasing the car involved. Deputy Meagan Pettengell was chasing 25-yearold Jeffrey Nissen in her squad car following a reported domestic dispute when Nissen lost control of his car and crashed. He later died.

Pettengell’s husband, Sgt. Ryan Pettengell, was her supervisor during the March 30 chase. The couple has been suspended without pay since late June. It wasn’t clear why Ryan Pettengell was supervising his wife or whether there’s a department policy addressing married couples at work.

DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott has recommended firing for Meagan Pettengell and a 60-day suspension without pay for Ryan Pettengell.

Their attorney, Laura Scarry, said the pair did not violate department policies. Scarry said Meagan Pettengell

obeyed her husband’s order to end the chase early by turning off her lights and siren.

She kept following Nissen at speeds reaching 110 mph, according to the sheriff’s complaint.

“Forty mph over the limit?

That would be unreasonable,” Chief Deputy Gary Dumdie said during the hearing. “Without the red lights on? I’m not coming up with any [reason] offhand of why that would be appropriate.”

Police training canceled because of Illinois budget crisis

CHICAGO – Police departments across Illinois said the state budget stalemate has left them struggling to provide necessary training to officers on everything from how to deal with the mentally ill to proper use of force.

Hundreds of classes are being canceled at a time of heightened tension between police and the communities they serve, and as officers increasingly are the first to respond when a person with a mental illness is in crisis, law enforcement officials said.

It also is happening just months after lawmakers approved a bill requiring additional law enforcement training – part of a response to fatal police encounters in cities, such as Ferguson, Missouri, New York City and Baltimore.

“The situation is becoming desperate,” said Eric Pingolt, who coordinates training in 11 counties for the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation is hosting a series of statewide public meetings on its new five-year, $8.4 billion highway improvement plan.

The IDOT sessions begin Monday in Bourbonnais, followed by sessions in Champaign, Decatur, Peoria and 12 other locations through October. The department’s first statewide public transportation plan also will be discussed at several of the sessions.

The bipartisan Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability’s report shows state revenue from riverboat casinos and the lottery fell and horse racing revenues were flat.

And while video gambling continued to expand, it wasn’t enough to offset the 5.8 percent fall in taxes for all forms of gambling in the fiscal year that ended June 30.

The slowdown comes as some state lawmakers consider expanding gambling as a way to ease the state’s financial problems.

“I’m a believer in using the expansion to bring more dollars, to create more jobs for the state,” state Rep. Bob Rita, D-Blue Island told The Springfield State Journal-Register.

“But we do need to do this in a smart way. I do believe it would generate additional revenue.”

But Tom Swoik, executive director of the Illinois Casino Gaming Association, said the report underlines his belief that gambling is saturated in Illinois.

“What you’re seeing going on is cannibalization from the other forms of gaming into video gaming,” Swoik said.

It’s just moving around the dollars. We’re not creating any more gamblers.”

The report reflected this, saying new casinos must bring new gambling revenue to the state and if the casinos don’t, “the state would have a large amount of gaming expansion with little new tax revenues to

Pinex was shot to death in 2011 after police stopped his Oldsmobile Aurora in a South Side neighborhood, later saying it matched the description they’d heard over the radio of a car wanted in a shooting.

But that dispatch actually aired in a different radio zone, so the officers did not hear it, according to court records.

A different call that aired in the officers’ zone involved an Oldsmobile Aurora that didn’t match Pinex’s car and wasn’t wanted in a shooting.

Marsh recently admitted under oath he violated court rules by failing to turn over that recording, and he did not tell other members of his trial team, records show.

The judge and plaintiffs’ attorneys found out about the other recording about halfway through the trial from a witness being questioned about how the search for dispatch recordings was conducted.

Marsh said at the time he’d just learned of its possible existence, and the recording eventually was played for jurors.

Those are among questions state and federal investigators want answered as they plunge into the emissions scandal at Volkswagen that has cost the chief executive his job, caused stock prices to plummet and could result in billions of dollars in fines.

Legal experts said the German automaker likely will face significant legal problems, including potential criminal charges, arising from its admission that 11 million of its diesel vehicles sold worldwide contained software specifically designed to help cheat emissions tests.

The Environmental Protection Agency has accused VW of installing sophisticated stealth software that enabled “clean diesel” versions of its Passat, Jetta, Golf and Beetle models to detect when they were being tested and emit less-polluting exhaust than in real-world driving conditions. The agency said the “defeat devices” allowed those models to belch up to 40 times the allowed amounts of harmful fumes in order to improve driving performance.

The Justice Department said it is “working closely” with EPA investigators.

“If there is sufficient evidence to show that Volkswagen intentionally programmed its vehicles to override the emission control devices, the company and any individuals involved could face criminal charges under the Clean Air Act, and for conspiracy, fraud and false statements,” said David M. Uhlmann, a former chief of the Justice Department’s Environmental Crimes Section who is now a law professor at the University of Michigan. He called criminal

But Uhlmann cautioned that hauling the executives involved into a U.S. courtroom could be challenging because much of the conduct at issue probably occurred overseas. While the U.S. has an extradition treaty with Germany, European regulators also are investigating and could claim first dibs on prosecuting company officials.

It’s not the first time Volkswagen has been accused of cheating on emissions testing by the EPA. In July 1973, the agency found that VW had installed temperature-sensitive devices that turned off emissions controls on about 25,000 Fastback, Squareback and bus models. The company agreed to remove the devices and eventually settled with the Justice Department, paying a $120,000 penalty.

CEO Martin Winterkorn resigned on Wednesday, and Volkswagen announced it would set aside $7.3 billion to cover the cost of the scandal, but even that may not be enough. The company has apologized, but has not yet detailed who was responsible for the defeat devices.

German media reported Sunday that Volkswagen had received warnings years ago

about the use of illegal tricks to defeat emissions tests. Bild am Sonntag said VW’s internal investigation has found a 2007 letter from parts supplier Bosch warning Volkswagen not to use the software during regular operation. Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung said a Volkswagen technician raised concerns about illegal practices in connection with emissions levels in 2011.

A Volkswagen spokesman declined comment.

The Clean Air Act allows for fines of up to $37,500 for each of the 482,000 suspect VWs sold in the United States, potentially totaling more than $18 billion. Attorneys general for nearly 30 states and the District of Columbia have announced a coordinated investigation and said they are issuing subpoenas for company records.

There’s also a high likelihood of class-action lawsuits by angry VW owners.

“They’re facing a tsunami of possible state and federal enforcement actions, and a potential large number of violations — including administrative, civil and criminal,” said William Carter, a former federal prosecutor in Los Angeles who specialized in environmental crimes.

By FRANK JORDANS The Associated Press BERLIN – People crammed into boats and trekking across borders have become the dominant images of Europe’s migrant crisis. In the shadows, however, are those who are profiting, for whom every migrant is a business opportunity.

The business of migration extends far beyond the human traffickers, who often grab migrants’ money and send them on life-threatening journeys on rubber boats or in cramped trucks. It includes bus companies and shelter operators that provide essential logistical help to authorities overwhelmed by the sheer number of people in need of housing and transportation.

It also includes telecom companies that sell SIM cards with special contracts for cross-border calls. And petty food-and-drink vendors at train stations also are known to be price-gouging, charging migrants double or triple the amount they’d be charged in stores around the corner.

UNITED NATIONS – World leaders pledged money and political clout to achieve equality for women by 2030 at a U.N. meeting Sunday co-chaired by China’s President Xi Jinping, who has faced strong criticism for cracking down on women’s rights activists.

Among the Chinese leader’s strongest critics was Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, who tweeted: “Xi hosting a meeting on women’s rights at the UN while persecuting feminists? Shameless.”

Leaders from about 80 countries and dozens of diplomats attended the meeting to mark the 20th anniversary of the U.N.

women’s conference in Beijing and press for implementation of its 150-page action plan for gender equality – which remains one of the 17 new development goals adopted by world leaders Friday.

As U.S. first lady, Clinton galvanized the 1995 Beijing conference with a rousing speech that included Xi Jinping words which have become a mantra for the global women’s movement: “human rights are women’s rights – and women’s rights are human rights.”

• On the offensive side for JCA, the line of Witt, Furcron, Ricky Fleming, Shane Raber and Ethan Emerson from left to right is a physical monster. Running behind that unit, Michael Johnson already has almost 1,100 rushing yards. In addition, quarterback Cade Earl is an accurate passer.

“Mike and Cade are the most explosive players out there,” Rotnicki said. “We on the defense just have to do our job, and we know they will put up points.”

• JCA coach Dan Sharp said that in addition to cleaning up mistakes, there is another matter that requires attention.

“We have to get Ke’Von [Johnson] more involved,” he said of the sophomore wingback who is filling in

while Harry Davis recovers from an ankle fracture. “He is still learning; but even tonight, when we did not give him the ball much, he had two great runs in the third quarter.”

• Joliet West (3-2, 1-2) got the “W,” 21-12, in Saturday’s SouthWest Suburban Blue game over Joliet Central.

But the Steelmen (0-5, 0-3), who lost their 50th straight game over six seasons, should have come away feeling good about their effort.

If not for two failed two-point conversions, Central would not have been trailing, 14-12, late in the game, and the last couple of minutes would have played out differently. How, we never will know. And, Meekah Ben-Israel’s pick-six that sealed the victory for West came with Central in its two-minute offense, something the Steelmen have not

SUBMITTED REPORT ARLINGTON HEIGHTS – Sophomore Jean Pietrzak caught three touchdown passes and sophomore Josh Woodard had three interceptions as the University of St. Francis stunned No. 7-ranked Robert Morris, 24-14, in Mid-States Football Association Midwest League action Saturday night at Morris Field.

The victory was the Saints’ first over a top-10-ranked opponent since they defeated No. 6 Morningside, 2117, in the NAIA postseason opening round on Nov. 19, 2011. With its third straight win this season, USF improved to 3-1 overall and evened its conference mark at 1-1. Robert Morris dropped to 3-1, 0-1.

USF opened the scoring early in the second quarter when sophomore quarterback Don Butkus connected with Pietrzak on a 33-yard touchdown completion. Robert Morris blocked the extra-point attempt, and Jimmy McClinton returned it to the end zone for the defensive PAT. The Eagles took a 9-6 lead on a 54-yard strike from Kanyatte Allen to Montre Lee on their next possession.

Butkus and Pietrzak connected on a 23-yard scoring strike with 2:13 left in the half, but the Eagles blocked the PAT again, and Nick Tennant returned it the length of the field to make the score 12-11 in favor of the Saints. Robert Morris regained the lead, 14-12, with 21 seconds remaining in the half on a 39-yard Ivan Strmic field goal.

USF took the lead for good early in the fourth quarter when Butkus and Pietrzak connected for their third TD, this time from 19 yards out. The Saints sealed the win when junior Mike Calandriello recovered an Eagles’ fumble in the end zone.

USF’s defense forced seven turnovers, including Woodard’s three interceptions. Seven Saints either forced or recovered a fumble. USF held Robert Morris to one net yard on 27 rushing attempts.

Butkus completed 26 of 44 attempts for 293 yards, three touchdowns and one pick. Pietrzak had 152 yards on five catches.

USF continues its three-game road stint Saturday at Concordia (Mich.).

Notes and quotes from an interesting weekend of football coverage: • If you had any doubts about the caliber of Joliet Catholic’s football team, they should have been erased in Friday night’s 41-3 victory over Marian Central.

Coach Mike Maloney’s Hurricanes (4-1) arrived at Joliet Memorial Stadium unbeaten and fresh off a 34-19 victory over highly ranked Nazareth, which JCA will host Oct. 9. Marian Central left town needing to regroup.

What stands out about JCA (5-0) is its strength along the offensive and defensive lines, and the quality of defense in general.

“Our defense has been awesome all year,” said safety Bill Rotnicki, whose picksix in the third quarter – the second of his career – upped the Hilltoppers’ lead to 21-3 and completely changed the complexion of the game.

“JCA for a long time has been known as a running, offensive team,” Rotnicki added. “Jaws [defensive coordinator Jake Jaworski] is doing a great job having our defense ready and having us in the right spots. We’re not worried, and we’re not surprised with what the other offense does, because he already has prepared us for it.”

“We were working all week on playing against their offense, and we came out with the victory,” defensive tackle Ken Aguirre said. “That’s what matters.”

“One area of offense that we should win is the two-minute drill because you have space to operate,” Boyter said. “The goal-line offense, anytime you are in the red zone, the advantage goes to the defense because there’s so little space.”

• Central’s defense played well against a West offense that had freshman Jaxon Aubry making his first varsity start, at quarterback.

“Our defense was awesome,” Boyter said. “A vast majority of our guys did their jobs. They trusted their teammates. Today, we really played team defense where we had 11 playing as one.”

• Ben-Israel received a couple of gifts for his efforts.

“Somebody gave me this rose. See how good it smells,” he said. “A former player here gave me this hat.

It says the greatest all-time play and goes to the person who makes the biggest play in the Central game. I’ll have to come back next year and pass it on.”

• Ben-Israel said his fellow linebacker, junior Drew Smith, is a player to watch.

Smith intercepted a pass in the end zone and recovered a late fumble against Central.

“Drew Smith, all the coaches like him,” he said.

“He dominates. He was playing inside but moved to outside, and that’s been working out well.”

• Ben-Israel on Aubry: “He’s a freshman, but he’s been with the team for many years. I remember seeing him on the sideline when he was a ballboy as a little kid.

He has felt the atmosphere.”

Matt Kenseth wins second race of playoffs

By DAN GELSTON The Associated Press LOUDON, N.H. – Matt Kenseth pushed Kevin Harvick down the stretch and took the lead for good when the defending series champion ran out of gas Sunday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in the second race of the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Championship.

Kenseth advanced to the second round of NASCAR’s playoffs and gave Joe Gibbs Racing its fourth straight win.

Harvick had the dominant

car and led the most laps, but a gamble to stretch his fuel to the end backfired, and he faded to 21st. He finished 42nd last week in the Chase opener and surely will have to win next week at Dover to advance to the second round.

JGR continued to prove it will be the organization to beat in the Chase. Denny Hamlin, the winner last week at Chicagoland in Joliet, was second for JGR. Chase drivers took eight of the top 10 spots.

The 16-driver Chase field will be cut to 12 after Dover.

“We had to be there to win

it,” Kenseth said. “I was giving Kevin everything I had. I thought he had us beat. He had the better car.”

Kyle Busch, Paul Menard, Harvick and Clint Bowyer are the final four drivers on the brink of elimination. They would advance with a victory, but Jimmie Johnson stands in their way at Dover, where he has a track-record 10 victories.

“Dover is a good track for us, a victory would be a good shot in the arm for us,” Johnson said.

Kenseth won for the fifth time this season and stalked

Harvick over the final tense laps that ended when the No. 4 Chevrolet had nothing left in the tank.

Harvick was knocked out of the race last week when he connected with Johnson and blew a tire. He later got into an altercation with Johnson in the motorhome lot and shoved the Hendrick Motorsports driver.

Harvick led 216 of 300 laps and heads to Dover with one of the biggest must-win races of his career.

He wasn’t the only Chase driver whose championship hopes are on the rocks.

Busch was the first Chase driver to suffer serious damage when his right front tire blew and he hit the wall. Busch, who the July race in New Hampshire, took the No. 18 straight to the garage.

“It’s killed,” he said over the radio.

Fourth in the standings entering the race, Busch dropped to 13th in points after he finished 37th.

With every point so valuable, his JGR crew hurried to repair the Toyota and he returned to the race more than 30 laps behind the leader.

Lewis women’s volleyball team wins 11th straight SUBMITTED REPORTS ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Lewis women’s volleyball team stayed perfect in Great Lakes Valley Conference play Saturday with a 25-16, 18-25, 25-15, 2521 win at Missouri-St. Louis.

Lewis (12-1, 4-0), which has won 11 straight matches, was led offensively by Elizabeth Hyland’s double-double of 15 kills and 15 digs. Aly Schneider added 12 kills. For the second straight match, Lewis used a decisive-blocks advantage to score key points. Lewis finished with an 11-to-3.5 edge in blocks over the Tritons.

Schneider led Lewis with six blocks. Nicole Yuede commanded the backcourt, recording 28 digs.

The closest set was the second. It was tied at 18 until UMSL scored the final seven points to tie the match at one.

Lewis pulled away midway through the third set to take a 2-1 lead. In the fourth, Lewis never trailed after grabbing a 16-13 lead.

University of St. Francis and Robert Morris played to a 1-1 double-overtime draw in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference action Saturday.

With their first tie in 99 games since a 1-all deadlock against Davenport University on Sept.

4, 2010, the Saints’ record moved to 5-2-1 overall and 1-1-1 in CCAC play.

Both teams’ goals came off free kicks, and both goalkeepers stopped penalty kicks. Karen Santos tallied for the Eagles in the 41st minute for the only scoring of the first half. Junior Alex Truhlar scored from 30 yards out, her third goal of the year, in the 63rd minute.

Kiely made several key saves late in the match and in overtime to help the Saints preserve the tie. Two of her eight saves on the day came in the goalmouth in the closing seconds of the first overtime.

In the men’s match between the two programs, Robert Morris won, 3-0, over the Saints.

SEATTLE – One burst of speed from rookie Tyler Lockett ignited Russell Wilson, Jimmy Graham and the rest of the Seattle Seahawks after a sleepy start against the Bears.

Lockett returned the second-half kickoff 105 yards for a touchdown, Wilson and Graham connected on a 30yard TD in the third quarter, and the Seahawks routed the undermanned Bears, 26-0, on Sunday.

Seattle led just 6-0 at halftime after an offensive performance that led to a cascade of boos. Lockett started a huge second half when he went untouched on a perfectly ex-

Arrieta pitches Cubs to victory over Pirates The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Jake Arrieta pitched seven dominant innings and homered in his major league-best 21st win, and the Cubs stopped Pittsburgh’s eight-game win streak with a 4-0 victory over the Pirates on Sunday night.

Arrieta (21-6) retired his first 18 batters before Gregory Polanco grounded a leadoff single into left field in the seventh.

The right-hander homered in the second and struck out nine while improving to 15-1 with a dazzling 0.89 ERA in his last 19 starts.

Pittsburgh (95-61) and the Cubs (90-65) each have clinched playoff spots and lead

the NL wild-card standings, so the Pirates could see Arrieta again in the first game of the postseason on Oct. 7.

The Pirates still could catch St. Louis for the NL Central title. They trail the Cardinals by three games and open a threegame series at home against St. Louis on Monday.

Johnson holds Yankees at bay into sixth in Sox loss

NEW YORK – Erik Johnson kept putting runners on base – with a little help from his sloppy teammates – then kept wriggling out of the jams.

the sixth to spark New York’s late-waking offense and Luis Severino pitched five-hit ball for six innings Sunday as the Yankees moved closer to a playoff berth with a 6-1 victory over the White Sox. Brian McCann had a sacrifice fly in the first inning off Johnson (3-1) that was set up by a leadoff walk and first baseman Jose Abreu’s errors on consecutive plays, the second two-error game of Abreu’s major league career.

The Yankees repeatedly wasted chances against Johnson, who was making his fifth start this season. New York was 0 for 9 with RISP through four innings.

“You just have to grind ’em out and keep throwing up ze-

roes as best you can,” Johnson said. “Definitely against that offense, you have to fill up the zone with a lot of quality pitches. They don’t chase a whole lot and they make you throw the ball over the plate.”

Johnson gave up seven hits and three runs – two earned – in 52⁄3 innings. He walked four and struck out five.

The Sox finished their road schedule 36-45, three wins better than last season.

Severino (5-3) induced three double plays in shutting down the Sox in his 10th big league start, helping the Yankees cut their magic number for clinching at least a wild card to three and move within one of the franchise’s 10,000th regular-season victory.

ATLANTA – At age 22, Jordan Spieth became the first $22 million man in golf Sunday.

Spieth capped off a dream season when he poured in putts from all over East Lake and closed with a 1-under 69 for a four-shot victory in the Tour Championship. That was all he needed to become the youngest player to capture the FedEx Cup and its $10 million bonus.

His fifth victory of the year, including two majors, was worth $1,485,000 and allowed the Texan to set a PGA Tour record with $12,030,465. And if that wasn’t enough, Spieth went back to No. 1 in the world.

His battle with Henrik Stenson long over, Spieth finished it off in fitting fashion. He made an 8-foot par putt that was never going anywhere but right in the heart.

“This is one I cannot wait to celebrate,” Spieth said.

The first person to greet him was his little sister, Ellie, who keeps him so grounded. His parents, girlfriend, grandfather and high school friends from Dallas were at East Lake to watch another amazing performance in a year filled with them.

In essence, the Bears’ 2015 season begins Monday.

Let’s be honest, Bears fans, you can be as frustrated, disappointed, hurt, upset and anything else you want to be about the Bears’ embarrassing 0-3 start.

But the reality is when the NFL schedule came out in April, who among you saw the Bears starting any better than 0-3 this year?

The truth is the Green Bay Packers, Arizona Cardinals and Seattle Seahawks are clearly the three best teams in the NFC, and the Bears are a rebuilding franchise coming off a 5-11 season.

They were always going to be 0-3. The question is: What comes next?

The Bears had no chance against their first three opponents.

Now come the Raiders, who are a surprising 2-1 and coming off an impressive win in Cleveland, while the Bears were getting pummeled in Seattle.

But the Raiders are a team the Bears can beat, and one they must beat if coach John Fox and company are as qualified as we all believed them to be as recently as two weeks ago when the Bears competed against the Packers.

The question that matters most now is can they?

Clearly, the Seahawks are not in sync yet on offense or

Vic Fangio’s defense is getting better, and next week it has a chance to win a game for the Bears.

Offensively, things are a lot tougher.

I understand that Fox believes he’s gaining some competitive advantage by not sharing any information at all on Jay Cutler’s, Alshon Jeffery’s, Ratliff’s and other Bears’ injuries, but it couldn’t be more unfair to Bears fans.

Without Cutler, this Bears team is unlikely to beat any team on its schedule unless the defense pitches a shutout and scores some points.

Social media is everywhere. Peter Jackson, a New Zealand moviemaker, when talking about selfies with fans, said, “It’s a social coup to nail you on their cellphone.”

We have several coups in bridge.

Let’s start this week’s columns with two defensive coups.

How can East-West defeat South’s contract of three no-trump after West leads the heart jack, and the defenders take the first three tricks in the suit ending in the East hand?

North should have opened two notrump. He should have given himself an extra point for his good five-card diamond suit and credit for all of those aces and kings. Then this contract would have been played from the preferable – and making – side.

West is known to have two heart winners, but how can East get West on lead?

West needs one other honor card, and the only useful one is the spade king. If he does have that card, how does it become an entry?

At trick four, East must lead the spade queen.

If declarer ducks, East plays another spade. Or, if South takes the queen with dummy’s ace, cashes his clubs, and takes the diamond finesse, East wins and leads another spade.

You will have noticed that East’s leading a low spade at trick four is not good enough.

This play of leading an unsupported honor to create an entry in partner’s hand is called the Deschapelles Coup, after Alexandre Louis Honore Lebreton Deschapelles, who was born in 1780 and died in 1847.

He was one of France’s top chess and whist players.

Open-angle glaucoma is the most common form of glaucoma. In it, the angle through which fluid drains from the eye remains open, but the aqueous humor drains out too slowly. This leads to fluid backup and rising pressure.

There is no way to prevent glaucoma, and early glaucoma typically causes no noticeable symptoms. But comprehensive eye exams can catch glaucoma early.

This provides an opportunity to begin treatment before it causes irreversible vision loss that can lead to blindness.

Anyone at high risk for glaucoma – as you are because of your family history – should have regular eye exams. That means every one to three years between the ages of 40 and 54; every one to two years between the ages of 55 and 64; and every six to 12 months from age 65 onward.

Drugs to lower pressure in the eye are the main treatment.

If medication is not effective, your eye doctor may recommend laser treatment or eye surgery to improve the eye’s natural drainage or to create a new route for fluid to drain.

Once you have glaucoma, your best bet for preventing vision loss is taking medications as directed.

Even if a person’s eye pressure is still in the normal range, further lowering it can prevent optic nerve damage from getting worse.

Dear Reader: You’re right to think that your risk is increased.

Because your mother has the condition, your chance of getting it is at least double that of most people you know. That doesn’t mean you definitely will get glaucoma; it just means you inherit a risk, and therefore need to be particularly careful.

Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases that cause vision loss by damaging the optic nerve. The optic nerve relays visual information from the eye to the brain. In order to see, we need all three: the eye, the optic nerve and the brain. (Of course, it’s a little more complicated than that.)

Normally, a liquid called aqueous humor fills the front part of the eye. From there, the liquid passes through a sieve-like system of tissues and drains out of the eye to be absorbed into surrounding blood vessels. As more aqueous humor is produced, excess fluid is eliminated. This keeps a healthy balance of pressure in the eye. (I’ve put an illustration of this process on my website, AskDoctorK. com.)

In glaucoma, the drainage system breaks down, slowing or blocking fluid flowing out of the eye. The fluid backs up in the eye and internal pressure rises. This, in turn, stresses the optic nerve.

If the pressure continues, nerve fibers begin to die and vision starts to fade. The pressure also can slow the flow of blood through tiny blood vessels that feed the retina and optic nerve.

Dear Abby: My mom recently separated from her husband. They’re in the process of getting divorced, and she is already talking to another man. She has known him since high school, but they only recently reconnected again.

Sometimes older adults forget that the same rules that apply to younger adults apply to them, too. So rather than judge your mother, do discuss this with her without letting it degenerate into an argument. If you approach it this way, she may listen.
