JOLIET – Nicole Berard told a committee of Illinois lawmakers Thursday her enrollment at Joliet Junior College this spring will be in jeopardy if they don’t approve a state budget that funds tuition assistance for low-income college students.

Berard, who is studying special education at JJC, is among the 130,000 low-income students statewide who receive funding from Illinois’ Monetary Award Program to help pay for education.

The funding has become entangled in Springfield’s budget impasse, which is in its third month.

Thursday’s Illinois Senate Higher Education Committee hearing in Joliet was one of three scheduled across the state designed so students could tell lawmakers about the impasse’s effect on their educations.

I don’t think I could continue my education,” Berard told committee members. “I’m working my two jobs right now trying to pay for everything, to pay bills, to provide for my younger sister. And it’s a lot for me.”

College leaders from JJC, the University of St. Francis and Lewis University said Thursday the institutions have so far “floated the money” to students eligible for MAP funding for the fall semester.

But without state appropriations, that won’t be feasible for much longer, and could hurt spring enrollment, said Raymond Kennelly, senior vice president for strategic en-

rollment management, marketing and planning at Lewis University.

“One of the challenges that we will eventually confront is, if the dollars do not arrive, we have a true cash flow challenge,” Kennelly said.

He said institutions would then have two choices: go to families and ask that they pay – in some instances, thousands more in tuition – or attempt to fill the financial gap with “dramatic” mid-year budget adjustments achieved through staffing and service cuts.

The cost to Lewis is about $6 million over two semesters, he said.

USF President Arvid Johnson said university officials have floated about $1.2 million to students for the fall semester. If spring arrives without appropriations, that will jump to about $2.5 million, he said.

Students have become Springfield’s “pawns in a game over which they have no control,” Johnson said.

field, told committee members he be would devastated if his MAP funding was taken away.

A second-year college student at JJC, Kenealy said he is visually impaired. The $600 he receives each semester helps pay for textbooks in alternative formats and supplements the cost of his many doctor appointments.

“I just don’t have the money to pay for my classes,” he said.

JJC President Debra Daniels said nearly 950 students at JJC eligible for MAP funding are attending the school this fall, she said.

“The state funding problem should not be on the shoulders of students who are striving to receive an education,” she said. “The state is putting at risk our most at-risk population.”

Daniels said the state budget impasse also has tied up funding for the college’s adult education and literacy class options. If nothing is done, those classes will be reduced, leading to staff layoffs.

Greuling: Joliet will ‘not be unscathed’ by Caterpillar job cuts

As many as 5,000 jobs will be cut by the end of this year from its salaried and management workforce, and thousands more will follow as the Peoria-based company decides which of its factories and manufacturing sites to close.

It was announced in March that Caterpillar would cut 230 jobs in Joliet and transition to a sister plant in Mexico beginning in late 2016. How Thursday’s announcement will impact Joliet’s timeline is unclear, said state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, a former Caterpillar employee.

Walsh said Caterpillar isn’t providing much information.

“In my opinion, with this announcement, there’s nothing in certainty on what’s going to happen in Joliet outside of what they’ve already announced,” he said.

Caterpillar’s leasing agreement with CenterPoint Properties expires in 2018, coinciding with the timeline announced Thursday.

District officials cite recovering housing market, aging population

fsarver@shawmedia.com WILL COUNTY – Enrollment in Will County area public schools is down for the fifth year in a row, with a dozen districts showing steady declines.

In a 2014-15 annual report by the Will County Regional Office of Education, the total enrollment for 29 school districts was down by 2.3 percent from 2011 and 1.2 percent from last year. Of those districts, 12, such as in Plainfield, Romeoville and the Lincoln-Way area, saw steady enrollment drops.

A few, such as Joliet Township High School District 204, showed an increase.

The enrollment figures are based on information from last year’s state fall housing report.

The amount of students a district receives plays a large role in the amount of revenue – especially state aid – it gets.

Shawn Walsh, Will County regional superintendent, said his office doesn’t know why enrollment has declined again countywide, but each individual district would know.

Some area school officials attribute the decreased enrollment to a housing market slowly crawling out of the Great Recession.

Plainfield

Enrollment for Plainfield School District 202 peaked at 29,254 in 2010, spokesman Tom Hernandez said. But it has continued to drop annually and sits at 28,117 for the 2014-15 school year.

Hernandez said the district went through a period of “incredible, breathtaking growth” throughout the 2000s as more people moved into the Chicago area suburbs.

“What’s different now?

The lending market. How banks are lending money to people. It’s not as easy. It’s a slower process, but people will still be attracted to Plainfield School District 202,” he said.

Hernandez said enrollment is mainly declining at the elementary level but is holding steady at the middle and high school level.

More children are growing up and moving to higher grades without new children to replace them at the pace of the pre-recession period, he

said.

Since the recession, the district has made $45 million in cuts – mostly targeting salaries – to stay afloat, he said.

Lincoln-Way

Three of the five school districts in New Lenox, Frankfort and Mokena showed steady declines in the past five years. Frankfort School District 157-C and Manhattan School District 114 did not.

Enrollment at the high school district the students feed into – Lincoln-Way District 210 – also showed a fiveyear decrease.

Lincoln-Way officials projected immense growth as early as 2005. Those projections were not met the following year, and enrollment continued to fall short annually even after two new schools were constructed to meet anticipated demand.

Because of the significant drop in enrollment – along with multimillion-dollar budget deficits – district officials chose in August to shut down Lincoln-Way North High School to secure financial stability.

showed increasing enrollment, such as Joliet Township High School District 204, Manhattan School District 114, Fairmont School District 89, Rockdale School District 84 and Laraway School District 70-C. Of all of them, Fairmont saw the biggest spike at 17.2 percent compared to last year.

Superintendent Sonya Whitaker said the school district has not seen a high enrollment increase but has seen slight increases mainly because 25 percent of students are in foster care.

The school district has a high student mobility rate, she said.

D-210 board seeks forensic, external audit

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – Thousands of Lincoln-Way parents got their wish Thursday as Lincoln-Way District 210 board members decided to pursue a forensic and annual external audit of finances.

After a closed session meeting – taking place at North high school – the board unanimously voted to direct administrators to develop a Request For Proposal for a forensic and annual external audit, with a time period to be determined later.

The measure drew support from even Board President Kevin Molloy, who said before the board meeting that he would not support a forensic audit as recommended by board member Christopher McFadden in a Sept. 8 memo.

Before the vote, tensions ran high between the board and public as McFadden grilled the district’s longtime auditor Edward McCormick of Mulcahy, Pauritsch, Salvador & Co., who presented his 201415 audit report.

In one question, McFadden asked McCormick about the practice of using money from a certain fund for other purposes, such as using money from the transportation fund to clean floors.

McCormick said if that transaction was selected for testing in the audit then it would be discussed. McFadden then asked how much of the budget the auditors test for

these kinds of transactions and asked for a ballpark figure.

“As far as looking at the specific transactions? It’s probably somewhere between 1 and 5 percent,” McCormick said, with the audience sighing be-

hind him. “That’s acceptable by auditing standards.”

He said MPS must go through peer review and their procedures have to be reviewed by an outside party.

MPS, which does auditing for other school districts, received a high grade for their practices, he said.

McFadden also asked if MPS has met with the board audit committee in the last 20 years. McCormick said no.

Residents demanded an expansive audit with a petition that gathered more than 2,300 signatures. That petition went into the hands of Ronald Sawin, assistant superintendent of business, at Thursday’s meeting.

Molloy said district attorney Hauser Izzo LLC would attend the meeting to provide guidance on questions in closed session but he declined to go into specifics.

Easter Seals dedicates veterans memorial at Joliet facility

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Easter Seals Joliet Region dedicated a veterans memorial on Thursday, drawing some attention to the services the agency offers to people who serve in the military.

The memorial is primarily a flagpole erected in front of the Easter Seals Regional Pediatric Center on Barney Drive. But Easter Seals hopes to surround the pole with with stones to be laid by donors commemorating veterans close to them.

“We try to think of special things to do to bring out the spirit that we all have and to use that spirit for the mission we have at Easter Seals,” Deb Condotti, chief executive officer of Easter Seals Joliet Region, told about 50 people gathered for the dedication ceremony. “We decided putting a flagpole in front of our center was a statement to everyone who comes up and

In the audience were a few veterans associated with Easter Seals.

They included Tony Simone, a Joliet resident and Air Force veteran injured in Afghanistan in 2010 when the helicopter he

piloted was shot down.

Simone comes to a weekly group meeting at Easter Seals for people with traumatic brain injuries.

“I find it very therapeutic to realize I’m not the only one.

There are other people like

me,” Simone said of the meetings. “Granted, they were not in the military, but that’s besides the point.”

Simone’s experience with Easter Seals is an example of how the agency’s services for people with disabilities can be extended to serve veterans and military families, Condotti said.

“Easter Seals nationally has served many veterans groups,” she said. “Here, locally, we provide caregivers’ support, and we work with military families on behalf of their children with disabilities.”

Condotti noted that military families sometimes have unique circumstances, including a parent deployed overseas or serving in the National Guard on weekends.

“We do understand the needs that military families have, especially if they have children with disabilities,” she said.

Exel seeks tax incentives for distribution center in Joliet

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Another warehouse operator is seeking property tax incentives to build a distribution facility in Joliet.

Exel, a third-party logistics provider, plans to build a 1.4 million-square-foot facility in CenterPoint Intermodal Center – Joliet. The company would initially employ 121 workers and eventually add 272 more, according to plans.

The Joliet City Council Economic Development Committee agreed Wednesday to recommend a 50 percent property tax abatement for five years for the project. The incentives still have to be approved by the full council.

Exel would operate the facility for a company that has not yet been named.

In addition to distribution, the facility would include some

assembly operations, said Michael Hansen, a Joliet attorney for the project.

The City Council earlier this year agreed to give Cadence Premier Logistics the same property tax abatement for a distribution operation with some light assembly at a facility being built in the Laraway Crossings Business Park.

Both projects are going on the south end of Joliet, where truck traffic has become a growing issue. City and state officials have been seeking infrastructure solutions to highway congestion related to the growing distribution operations in Joliet.

One proposal is to build a bridge over the Des Plaines River at Houbolt Road to create a new Interstate 80 access route to CenterPoint. Officials also said the interchange at Interstate 80 and Route 53 needs to be improved to handle the

truck traffic. But funding is an issue for both proposals.

Hansen said the Exel development should add about $400,000 in annual property taxes for Joliet, with $200,000 being abated per year in the first five years if the incentives are approved.

The facility would be built on CenterPoint Way across from the Home Depot distribution center.

Meanwhile, the Economic Development Committee continues to explore a tax incentive that would encourage developers to buy building materials in Joliet. The city is still developing the incentive, including the possibility of tying it to job creation.

“We need some kind of formula based on number of jobs rather than capital investment,” Committee Chairman Larry Hug said at the Wednesday meeting.

Heavy traffic expected for this weekend in downtown Plainfield

Two major events are expected to cause heavy traffic.

“Traffic is going to be quite nasty around town,” Police Chief John Konopek said at Monday’s Village Board meeting.

The 2015 Plainfield Community Homecoming Parade will kick off at 9 a.m. Saturday. But roads are expected to close earlier in the day.

“We’re expecting in excess of 10,000 people downtown this weekend,” Konopek said.

The parade will start at Van Dyke Road and Lockport Street, traveling east on Lockport Street and south on Illinois Street before heading west on Commercial Street

and south on James Street to Fort Beggs Drive.

Ottawa Street between Van Dyke Road and Ira Jones Middle School will start closing at 6 a.m. Ira Jones and Village Center Drive near Village Hall will become controlled access points for parade entry.

New Lenox Det. Mike Nuesse said police were called about 2:30 p.m. when a clerk at Speedway, 800 W. Maple Street in New Lenox, became suspicious after Quishana S. Hines, 29, used a credit card to buy a

“These guys cut meat 10 hours a day in a 34-degree room,” Ogden said, noting that the cold temperatures assure the best quality meat possible.

Puchetta, a Manhattan resident who is engaged and a father, started at Texas Roadhouse as a dishwasher.

For him, being a meat cutter is a great experience because of the precision involved with making the perfect steak.

“You get focused, concentrated and do your best,” Puchetta said.

“I think it’s kind of a lost art,” Ogden said. “They spend so much time every day really breaking down meat to make the perfect steak.”

MIND Research Institute is a social benefit organization dedicated to ensuring all students are mathematically equipped to solve the world’s most challenging problems. MIND aims to solve the math crisis in America by closing the achievement gap through its ST Math programs in the classroom and its MathMINDs programs, like the Math Fair, outside the classroom.

According to Elizabeth Garrow, philanthropic partnerships director for the MIND Research Institute, it’s because of the support from D’ Arcy Motors and the CATA that they expect more than 5,000 students and their families to attend the Math Fair at Navy Pier.

“Terry D’ Arcy (owner of D’ Arcy Buick GMC) and his family have been committed to communities and organizations throughout Will County for decades,” said Garrow. “What is amazing about Terry is his ability to see where the needs are, connect the dots and quietly make things happen. He and D’ Arcy Motors have personally volunteered their time, resources and talents to countless individuals and organizations. Terry leads by example.”

The CATA has been a longtime supporter of local non-profit organizations. Since 1992, the association has raised $42 million for significant Chicago charities during the annual First Look for Charity black-tie event, held the evening before the Chicago Auto Show opens to the public.

ROMEOVILLE – Roman Puchetta took out a fresh, raw, tender sirloin from his 40-pound keep of meat, preparing it before the big cut Thursday morning.

With a careful precision, despite the 38-degree environment at the Canlan Ice Sports Arena rink, Puchetta took a part of the meat and with several swift swipes of his knife, revealed a symmetric masterpiece before quickly setting it aside for the next cut.

The judge standing on the ice behind him slightly nodded his head in approval and marked a grading sheet.

On both sides of Puchetta, who is a professional meat cutter for the Texas Roadhouse at 3151 Tonti Drive in Joliet, were nine meat cutters from other Illinois Texas Roadhouse locations who competed against him in the 80-minute first round of the 2016 National Meat Cutting Challenge.

“I’m a little nervous,” Puchetta said.

Thursday marked his third time taking part in the competition. He has twice already reached the national finals.

Ill. spending bill advances The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois lawmakers on Thursday passed plans to finance at least some of the state services not being paid for during the state budget stalemate – emergency food assistance, help for children with developmental delays and prizes for big lottery winners.

ALVA W. MINOR JR.

He was raised and educated in Ludlow and went on to honorably serve in the U.S. Army. Ron played the clarinet in the Army Band, which allowed him to travel throughout Europe with his new wife, Joyce (nee Reed). He went on to earn a Bachelors Degree in Sales and Marketing from the University of Kentucky and was hired

by Fruit of the Loom. He eventually became vice president and retired after seventeen years. He then opened J & R Wearhouse which he operated for ten years, and also worked with John Greene Realty in Naperville.

Ronald had a passion for photography; was a member of the Morris Camera Club and chaired the photo contests during the Grundy County Corn Fest, as well as the Minooka Village Hall city garage sales for several years. Ronald held his private pilot’s license and will be remembered for his enjoyment of flying, riding his Goldwing motorcycle, and traveling. Many memorable trips were spent visiting the National Parks, and Door County Wisconsin was one of his favorite destinations.

Having experienced a wonderful full life, Ron’s greatest accomplishment was his family and he cherished every moment spent with them all.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Joyce; children, Ronald, Jr. (Stephanie) Byland of MN, and Steve (Patty) Byland and Nancy (Alan) Lindmark, both of Minooka; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (William) Thompson of Minooka, Timothy (Terri) Byland of NC and Hannah Lindmark, Joshua Lindmark, Sarah Lindmark, Noah Lindmark and Emily Lindmark all of Minooka; seven great grandchildren; and one cousin, Sandy (Terry) Keller of Ludlow.

MILDRED C. FLANAGAN Mildred C. (nee Riley) Flanagan, age 72, of Manhattan, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Wednesday, September 23, 2015 at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center, Joliet.

She is survived by her children, Brenda Tanner of Ottawa, Mary Robin (David) Nelson of Crest Hill, Wanda Flanagan of Manhattan, John D. Flanagan Jr. of Manhattan, nine grandchildren; Jennifer, Robert, Christopher, Ricky Jr., and Stephanie Tanner, Emerald, Nicholas, and Christian Nelson, and Jessica Flanagan, 16 great- grandchildren and one on the way. One brother, Robert Riley Sr.; 4 sisters, Madeline (Pete) Bird, Marilyn (Greg) Gustafson, Myrtle (John) Briggs, Maureen (Todd Sr.) Bennett; two sisters-in-law, Brenda Riley and Ella Childress; one brother-in-law, Roger Smith; godmother to Kathy Archer and Nicholas Nelson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

ANOTHER VIEW

A POPE’S AMERICAN MOMENT Those fortunate enough to see Pope Francis on his visit to the United States will know it is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, one they’ll share with friends and family all their lives. And that feeling will apply to non-Catholics, as well as members of the church.

Francis has captured the world’s attention not only with his position, but with a message that embraces all people with love and forgiveness and understanding that goes beyond doctrine. Indeed, long-time church observers thought from the moment he appeared as pope and asked people for their prayers that his might well be a transformative period in the church’s history.

Francis certainly is not a revolutionary, in that he adheres to and advocates many of the church’s traditional beliefs. But he has cleared the way for the church and its leaders to be more forgiving and more understanding. He has given priests the right to absolve the Catholic sin of abortion. He has acted to make annulment easier.

And he has repeatedly emphasized the need for all to help the poor and disadvantaged. He has preached for humility, for tolerance of those who are different.

And of late, he has spoken of the threat of climate change and the need to better care for the environment and tied that together with the needs of the less fortunate. A gifted writer, the pope wrote in his encyclical policy on social justice and the environment, “It must integrate questions of justice in debates on the environment, so as to hear both the cry of the earth and the

cry of the poor.”

The pope conveys his view of the church’s obligation to involve itself in social issues with his own itinerary in the United States.

Yes, there will be parades and Masses. But he will be visiting a school, a charity and a prison. And as he always does, this pope will greet his crowds with kisses and handshakes.

He seems particularly touched by children, embracing them when possible,

blessing them, kissing them. He makes a special effort with those children who are sick or handicapped.

The pope’s humanity is what has caused him to be admired and even adored by non-Catholics. He is a person without pretense, who chooses to live in humble rooms at the Vatican and not the more well-appointed apartment of his predecessors. By example, he is a leader of all, and though he’ll address Congress and the

United Nations, he’ll likely admonish them to serve all the peoples of the world. And they will sit up straight when he does.

Francis has attained extraordinary attention since assuming the papacy.

Yes, that’s true of all new popes. But in this case, the attention comes as much because of his ideas and his forceful way of expressing them.

My initial perception is poor decision making by the adults of the family.

They are given a list of insurers of which they chose one, then later discover their needs aren’t met. Instead of confirming with

the local clinic about billing policies, they make assumption it’s a direct billing policy. It’s apparent decision-making skills are lacking.

Currently they receive appropriate coverage but whine about having to make a small effort to

secure coverage. It’s this type of entitlement behavior that really offends me as it’s decaying America and wage earners standard way of life.

Central looked a little nervous at the start of the third, but they played extremely composed when the match really mattered.

All they had to do was say a few words on the court when they were down.

“We have sayings on the court that calms us down and reminds us that we prepared for this,” Plainfield Central junior libero Annie Obradovich said. “We can do it, and we showed it. Our front row was playing great. Our defense was covering and getting digs. It was great overall.”

Obradovich finished with 18 digs.

Senior outside Claire Hotchkin added 12 digs, while Shook had nine and Eulitz had five.

Since Central was able to defend well, Shook was able to spread out the offense and tally 23 assists.

PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Central and Minooka girls volleyball teams walked into Central’s gym Thursday as the last two Southwest Prairie Conference teams with an undefeated league record.

So it was only fitting that the match went to three sets.

The Wildcats won, 25-15, 23-25, 27-25.

“It was a total team effort and that was the difference,” junior setter Ashley Shook said. “We knew that they were going to come out fighting, and that it is probably going to come between us for conference. We did everything that we could as a team to play our best, and I think that’s why we won.”

Even though Minooka has one of the top front rows in the conference, the Wildcats (12-5, 6-0) played a smarter and more spread-out game.

In the first set, Central took advantage of Minooka’s weakness at the beginning of the year – which was serve receive and defense – and it looked like Central had the match in the bag.

The Indians (11-6, 5-1), however, shook off the shaky play and the Perinar sisters dominated.

Senior outside hitter Ginger Perinar had a court-high 14 kills, while adding 11 digs and four blocks (two solo). Her younger sister Rocky was huge at the net with five total blocks, two coming from solo blocks.

The sophomore middle had six kills off of seven attempts, good for a .714 hitting percentage.

Minooka ended up out-blocking Central, 13-7.

Sophomore outside hitter Alli Papesh added eight kills; junior setter Brooklyn Bachmann had 31 assists; sophomore defensive specialist Taylor Baranski (eight digs) and senior libero Maddie Allessio (seven digs) played solid defensively.

None of that was enough to put them past Central, however.

The Wildcats took advantage of one big thing to win the match.

Minooka had a 17-9 lead in the third game, and the Indians let up. The Wildcats put everything they had on the court when it looked like Minooka was ready to walk off.

“We haven’t looked like that [first game] since the beginning of the year,” Minooka coach Carrie Prosek said. “I’m proud of them to come back the second game. ... We played safe instead of our game. You can’t be up by that many points and let that slide out of your hands.

We’ll refocus, and maybe it’s good for them to see that we can’t take teams easy when we get a big lead.”

Porters productive, shut out Knights

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – After turning in its best offensive showing of the year in Tuesday’s 7-3 victory over Lincoln-Way East at Toyota Park, the Lockport’s boy’s soccer team wasn’t likely to duplicate that type of performance Thursday.

But while the Porters struggled to find the net during long stretches of their nonconference match with Lincoln-Way Central, they were productive enough to capture a 3-0 victory.

Lockport (6-3-3) scored the only goal it needed in the second minute and connected again about midway through the final half to take control against the youthful Knights (4-7-1), who were blanked for

the second straight match.

“We played four tough games in a row in the Pepsi Showdown, so we said that we needed goals and that we needed to respond with a couple of wins, and we score 10 goals in two games, which is very pleasing,” Porters coach Chris Beal said. “On Tuesday, our speed of play, our intensity and our finishing was a lot more proficient than tonight.

“We looked a little lethargic and our passing game was slow to build up and in the final third, we didn’t combine as much. As we told the boys, it’s going to be a very even conference this year so we need to be mentally ready, get the passing rhythm going and finish.”

The Porters connected on their first good attempt of the

match when freshman Eric Keta, who was brought up to the varsity team Tuesday, got free and put in a close-range attempt.

“It’s been great to get moved up and I’m really excited,” Keta said. “I’m just taking it as a learning experience. It’s a great opportunity I’ve been given and playing with better people has helped make me better. I’m working as hard as I can and whatever happens, happens.”

While Lockport continued to threaten, especially early on, it never had another scoring chance until the squads returned after the break.

Brian Moore, Gozie Nwachukwu, Jacob Podczerwinski and Linas Savickas were all denied by Knights keeper Isaac Hopper, while Sean Curran and Danny Flores suffered

a similar fate against Porters goalie Jakub Krawczyk.

After an exchange of tries

by Central’s Flores and Brock Krohe and Lockport’s Jose Magallanes, Zach Stojak and Tommy Calderaro to start the final half, the Porters grabbed a 2-0 lead in the 60th minute when Calderaro fired in a nice shot that landed just inside the opposite post.

“In Tuesday’s match, we played great,” said Calderaro, who scored four goals against East. “We played as a team and had good communication and everything just fell together. After playing four tough games in the Pepsi against high-ranked teams, it was good to let the floodgates open and score seven goals.

“The pressure was good to begin with and we scored but then we sort of slacked off

a little bit. After we got that second goal, things were better and we were able to go forward more.”

In between a pair of good chances by David Villa that were thwarted during the late going, the Porters concluded the scoring in the 72nd minute when Nwachukwu sent an attempt toward the net and Villa was there to get a touch on the ball to collect the goal.

“We’re banged up and pretty thin on numbers now,” Knights coach Sean Fahey said. “Our lack of experience starts to show in the first five minutes or late in games. But that’s part of the growing experience and hopefully we’re learning that. The guys are definitely improving to be able to hang with a team like this that plays a lot of great teams from up north.”

Down-to-the-wire finishes may rule Week 5 VIEWS Dick Goss Take a look at some of our area high school football matchups that will play out Friday night: Lincoln-Way East (3-1) at Bolingbrook (2-2); St Rita (1-3) at Providence (1-3); Marian Central (4-0) at JCA (4-0); Thornton (4-0) at Lincoln-Way West (4-0); Morris (3-1) at Yorkville (2-2); Thornwood (1-3) at Lincoln-Way Central (1-3); Tinley Park (4-0) at Lemont (3-1).

Predicting the winner in any or all of those games is iffy at best. And that’s not even considering the always wild-and-crazy Southwest Prairie Conference, where unexpected results often are the rule.

This is Week 5 of the season.

After this week’s results are in, we can begin focusing on the playoff picture, on which area schools appear on their way to the postseason and which must pull a rabbit out the hat to get there. Also, we will get a somewhat better handle on which bubble teams would fall into which class.

For now, however, we look forward to enjoying a Week 5 where there should be numerous close, competitive games.

Some likely will go down to the closing minutes before they are decided.

After what his Hurricanes did last week, rallying from a 19-0 deficit to beat mighty Nazareth, 34-19, this game ranks with the best match-ups in the state this weekend. From this perspective, the outcome may hinge on whether the Marian Central defense can slow down the Hilltoppers’ offense, which is averaging 39.5 points and 468 yards a game.

Lincoln-Way East and Bolingbrook are perennial powers that at times in this rivalry have produced surprising if not shocking results. Especially with the up-and-down start Bolingbrook has endured, it is difficult to put a finger on what may happen this time.

St. Rita vs. Providence is a game we always anticipate.

This year, however, both are 1-3.

While you never want to count either one out, the loser will be

teetering on the brink of playoff elimination. The winner, however, still will have a hill to climb in order to qualify.

The last several years, Lincoln-Way West generally has come up big in key SouthWest Suburban Red match-ups. But the Thornton defense has posted three consecutive shutouts.

Will that defense be able to tame a West offense that is keyed by its outstanding offensive line?

Stay tuned.

My tendency is to say Morris will handle Yorkville as the Northern Illinois Big 12 East rivals gets rolling. I remembering thinking that last year as well, and the Foxes came away with an overtime victory.

Also scheduled to appear will be Travis Young, a twotime STARS midget winner and Inaugural Alex Pruett Memorial winner. A close friend of Pruett, Young will carry the 3 Wide Life logo on the side of his Kenny Irwin Sr.-owned car.

Tinley Park has put up impressive numbers, and Lemont perhaps has not put it all together yet. If the Indians can do that, they should take hand the Titans their first loss.

But rest assured, Tinley Park is no slouch.

Then there are our two Saturday games.

Joliet Central (0-4) is playing better in some facets of the game and will visit rival Joliet West (2-2), which has dropped

two straight and will be without injured quarterback Alex Tibble. You might say the Tigers should get this one, but you never want to look past your district rival.

The other Saturday clash is at Plainfield Central (0-4), which will celebrate homecoming against Minooka (3-1). The Wildcats have had trouble winning over the past few years, but remember, they came within 16-12 of the Indians last year.

There’s Week 5 in a nut shell.

If you can say with any certainty that you know who will win each of our area games, please, let me in on your secret.

A good person and a good artist Joliet artist shows sculpted artwork in two exhibits

By DENISE M. BARAN-UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Several months ago, Chris Zurales asked Morris artist Margie Glass Sula for suggestions for the Shirley Oberwortmann Community Art Wall at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Sula recommended her friend and former Joliet Junior College classmate Pedro Palacios, 33, of Joliet.

Zurales, relations coordinator the Joliet medical center, said he doesn’t know much about art but Palacios’ sculpted religious and immigration-themed pieces appealed to him.

Palacios’ exhibit will remain in place through Oct. 16.

“It catches the eye right away,” Zurales said of Palacios’ art. “It has this almost dark appearance to it, but when you look closer, it’s very positive and uplifting. It has a juxtaposed feeling to it.”

Sula, an adjunct art teacher at JJC who met Palacios about 15 years ago, is impressed with Palacios’ growth as an artist and his dogged determination at fighting the lingering side effects from childhood brain cancer.

“He’s very strong and a hard worker,” Sula said. “He’s always very positive and looking to make things better.”

Palacios also has created a 3-by-2 foot sculpture for the Day of the Dead exhibit at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago. The exhibit will be up through Dec. 13, according to its website.

Most of Palacios’ artwork is a combination of wood sculpture and acrylic paint, with the occasional addition of mixed media. He no longer works in oils because of their extended drying time. He enjoys the ease of sculpting with wood and modifying found objects – such as medallions – to fit his pieces.

“Some of the things I make, we have a love-hate [relationship],” Palacios said. “It’s very tiring and hard on me sometimes, but I just have to do it.”

Nearly all the art reflects Palacios’ two loves – religious themes and immigration rights.

When you play bridge, keeping some statistics is not a bad idea. In a duplicate, for example, note how many times your opponents are going down.

If a lot, you are not doubling enough.

When you are on opening lead, how often do you make the best start? You must treat this one carefully, because some “best opening leads” are hard to find.

You are West, on lead after that Stayman auction. Which card would you choose?

From the auction you learned that dummy has four spades. Without a major, he wouldn’t have used Stayman; and with four hearts, he would have raised his partner’s suit.

However, it is probably best to lead a spade, despite dummy’s having four.

You hope partner has a useful doubleton; preferably king- or ace-doubleton, but ten-doubleton might be enough.

The layout of your dreams exists in this deal. But note that you must “forget” the textbook advice to lead the top of three touching honors. If you choose the queen, you irreparably block the suit. When an opponent is known to have four-card length, lead fourth-highest; here, the three. Presumably declarer will play low from the dummy. Your partner will win with his king and return the suit. Since declarer cannot get nine tricks without playing on diamonds, you defeat the contract.

Finally, note that if a psychic declarer calls for dummy’s ace at trick one, hope partner unblocks the king.

If he does, sign him up as your bridge partner for life.

The two most commonly prescribed drugs are pramipexole and ropinirole.

A relatively new drug of this type is rotigotine. It is available as a pill and also as a skin patch that you apply for a day, and replace the next morning with a fresh patch.

• Benzodiazepines are sedatives that improve sleep quality.

• Anticonvulsants are especially useful in patients whose symptoms are painful.

• Opioids are narcotics, such as codeine and oxycodone. They relieve pain and suppress symptoms. Opioids are generally reserved for people with severe, unrelenting symptoms that do not respond to other treatments.

As is often true in medicine, you and your doctor may need to try different treatments, in different doses and combinations, to find out which is best for you.

But after that period of trial and error, you’re likely to get that good night’s sleep you’ve been dreaming of.

Dear Reader: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a neurological condition that causes uncomfortable sensations in the legs.

In describing these odd sensations, my patients use words such as “tingling,” “prickly,” “crawling,” “pulling” and, sometimes, “painful.”

The discomfort of RLS usually comes with an overwhelming urge to move the legs. In fact, moving the legs may actually make them temporarily feel better. RLS also can cause occasional jerking leg movements during sleep. That’s why doctors often call it a “movement disorder.”

RLS symptoms tend to worsen when you’re inactive, particularly at bedtime. As a result, many people, as you do, find it hard to fall and stay asleep.

Then a vicious cycle can set in. Poor quality sleep makes you feel generally worse and may make the unpleasant sensations worse as well. That’s because when you don’t get enough sleep, all sorts of bodily sensations – particularly pain – are amplified.

Treatment will depend on how severe your symptoms are. If they are mild, then exercising, stretching or massaging your legs or taking a hot bath may bring relief.

In the past, we’ve talked in this space about lifestyle changes that can help to reduce the symptoms of RLS. But you asked specifically about medications.

Several different medicines can improve or even eliminate the bothersome symptoms.

The first may surprise you: iron pills. That’s because people who have deficient levels of iron in

Dear Abby: There are no words to express how disappointed I am at the education kids receive now and still graduate with “honors.”

I was at the grocery store a short time ago.

Two young ladies working there just completed their freshman year at the local college.

One of them had been on the honor roll all through high school.

I bought four packages of gravy mix that were on sale -- four packages for $1.

As the cashier rang it up, I noticed that she had entered them at 44 cents apiece.

When I brought it to her attention, she asked the other cashier if that was right. She asked, “Forty-four cents, wouldn’t that be four for $1?” The other one picked up a calculator to find the answer.

Can you tell me, what did this honor student learn in school? Both girls are in college. My heart is broken for our kids. Maybe we need to go back to teaching like when I was a kid.
