Miner’s version of killings told in video statement

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joshua Miner told police during questioning that he and his friends’ deadly attacks on Eric Glover Jr. and Terrence Rankins were provoked because one of the victims attempted to rape Bethany McKee, according to a video statement played at Miner’s trial Wednesday.

“She said stop. I just freaked out and … I put him in a headlock and tried to choke him out,” Miner Joshua Miner told police in the video presented Wednesday by prosecutors during the 26-year-old’s murder trial. “After we drank some more ... we shoved the bodies into the spare bedroom.”

The claim of rape contrasts with testimony at McKee’s trial that Glover and Rankins were lured to the apartment so they could be robbed and that the killings were part of a robbery.

In the video, Miner gave his version of events to police – even going as far as animatedly demonstrating the chokeholds

he used on one of the victims.

Miner, 26, is on trial for murder in the deaths of Rankins and Glover Jr. on Jan. 9, 2013.

The killings took place in a house in the 1100 block of North Hickory Street in Joliet.

In the statement, Miner tells police he did not call them after he and Adam Landerman killed the two men because he was “on parole” and that “all he could think of was that his life was over.”

In the video, police asked if he believed he did anything wrong.

“Yes. I killed somebody,” Miner said in the video. “I kept thinking all I had to do was just … kick them out. All these scenarios we could have done played out in my mind.”

The video statement is set to continue Thursday. But in what was played in court Wednesday, Miner did not say anything about planning to rob Rankins and Glover.

Instead, Miner said he and his friends “pick-pocketed” the dead bodies of Glover Jr. and Rankins after the fact “seeing as they were dead anyway.”

Joliet police Detective Pat Schumacher testified Wednesday that Miner was placed

in handcuffs outside the home where the killings took place. He told police then that “[Rankins and Glover] attempted to rape one of the girls so ‘I did one of them’ and ‘Adam did the other.’

“He then said something to the effect of ‘It was either us or them,’ ” Schumacher said.

Miner’s explanation of events contrasted with Alisa Massaro’s testimony last month that Miner made a cutting motion across his throat as a prearranged signal that the women should go downstairs before he and Landerman attacked the victims.

While Miner is alleged to have killed Rankins only, prosecutors argue he is accountable for both deaths by planning to rob the two men.

Miner, Landerman, Massaro and McKee were arrested on murder charges. Massaro agreed to testify against the others in exchange for pleading guilty to lesser charges.

McKee was found guilty last month. Landerman is awaiting trial.

Judge Gerald Kinney is presiding over the bench trial. Earlier this week, Miner waived his right to a jury trial.

Speed pleads not guilty in Labor Day weekend slaying

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The woman accused of fatally stabbing her roommate last month over the Labor Day weekend pleaded not guilty Wednesday to first-degree murder during her arraignment at the Will County Courthouse.

Kadeidra S. Speed, 20, appeared on circuit court video – about three weeks after police say she killed her former roommate, Sharleatha M. Green, 34, on Aug. 31 in the 200 block of North Eastern Avenue in Joliet.

That day, Speed left the

apartment when she was told she was being evicted, but allegedly returned hours later with a man and stabbed Green in the basement with a knife, according to authorities.

Speed, 20, had only been living at the apartment for a month. Before her arrest last month, Speed in February won an order of protection against a then-boyfriend she said abused her, according to court order of protection obtained by The Herald-News.

In the order of protection request, Speed listed that she had been living in Crest Hill, attending Joliet Junior College and working at Home Depot

warehouse in Joliet.

Other court documents show that in 2011, a then-16year-old Speed was in the care of an Illinois Department of Children and Family Services’ contractor called Our Children’s Homestead, which is based in Naperville. That same year, Speed attempted to get her last name changed to “Edward,” citing a “failed adoption” as the reasoning, court documents show. However, she failed to appear in court so the paperwork was never processed.

Speed is being held at the Will County Jail on $1.5 million bail.

fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Rosh Hashanah is a time for introspection for Rabbi Charles Rubovits.

The Jewish New Year is a time when people reflect on where they may have fallen short in their relationships and in the community over the past year, he said.

It’s a quiet, contemplative time, as opposed to the celebrations of the New Year holidays at the end of each calendar year.

“I may not have quite hit the bell, so it’s my obligation to sit back and listen to the prayers and understand I need to do better,” Rubovits said about Rosh Hashanah.

Wednesday evening marked the beginning of the holiday season for the Joliet Jewish Congregation and synagogues worldwide. Rubovits will lead the Joliet congregation in the celebration, which will conclude Friday.

The holiday coincides with the fall season, a beautiful time of the year for Rubovits.

“It’s a great time to look around your space and recognize God is really good and really provided all sorts of good things for us,” he said. “We need to stop our frantic lives and take a good look. It’s a beautiful, beautiful place.”

Rosh Hashanah The New Year is not only recognizes the beginning of a new year for Jews, but also the beginning of the world, said Leonard Kranzler, a University of Chicago neurosurgeon. Kranzler has served as the cantor at the Joliet congregation during the holiday for more than 50 years.

“One of the nicest traditions of this holiday is you can pray to God to forgive your particular sins but if you sin against a fellow human being – insulted them or whatever – you don’t get forgiven for that unless you go to that person asking for forgiveness. So you find people doing that,” he said.

As the cantor, Kranzler will sing the liturgy of the holiday services in Hebrew.

The Jewish New Year does not always fall on the same day because the Jewish calendar runs on a lunar cycle. Rubovits said the holiday can be as early as August or as late as October.

Some items associated with the holiday include the shofar, or ram’s horn, that is sounded

to awaken people to the importance of Rosh Hashanah. Another is the pomegranate fruit which, according to tradition, has 613 seeds that is symbolic for the 613 laws in the Torah, he said.

Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of many Jewish holidays in the fall season. On Oct. 4, Yom Kippur – or Day of Atonement – begins, and Sukkot – or Feast of Tabernacles – begins Oct. 8.

Jewish settlers first came to Joliet in 1893 and the first Hebrew school was established in 1911, with a synagogue created some time later. After World War II, synagogue leaders changed the name of their location to Joliet Jewish Congregation.

About 160 members attend the congregation, compared to the 110 to 120 members that attended before 2008. Rubovits said the increase corresponds with the large influx of people moving into Will County.

Practicing the Jewish faith has grown harder, Rubovits said. Life was different for early followers of Judaism, compared to the hectic lives people lead now. Everyone has to work harder to obey the ethical principles of Judaism, he said.

Kranzler said there has been a renaissance in Jewish scholarship. Key books such as the Talmud remained untranslated for thousands of years until recent decades.

People also can learn about Judaism from Shalom TV, he said.

“There is almost unlimited opportunity for learning,” he said.

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County Center for Community Concerns’ new West Side facility will provide enough room for the agency’s many programs, as well as convenient parking for clients.

The center, which provides housing, utility and weatherization programs to low- and moderate-income individuals and families, will relocate to its new office at 2455 Glenwood Ave. on Monday.

The center purchased the 15,600-square-foot building, formerly known as the McKeown Law Firm, for $1 million.

The center has been housed downtown at 304 N. Scott St. since 2000.

Director Kris White said lack of space and lack of park-

ing were two key reasons for the move.

“We outgrew our building at 304 N. Scott,” White said.

“We’ve been using a couple of trailers for additional office space since 2009. We’ve been looking for a new space since then.”

The two-story building will house the center, which plans to lease out part of the upstairs to a couple of nonprofit agencies, White said. Scott Street, without the trailers, was about 6,800 square feet, she said.

White said the purchase was made by a local nonprofit, Community Action Building Corp., through local fundraising.

The center plans to sell the Scott Street facility, although its weatherization program will remain there for now.

Will County Center for Community Concerns opens in new location Monday

One of the big complaints about Scott Street was the lack of off-street parking, White said. Clients had to use parking meters when visiting the agency.

The Glenwood site has a spacious parking lot and is on the PACE bus route, White said.

“We believe it’s going to be more convenient,” White said, noting that their clientele were equally spread across both the West and East sides.

“The new place is probably easier to get to because you can come right off Interstate 80 or Interstate 55,” White said. “Downtown Joliet can be a little more difficult to get around.”

White said the new facility will have 16 offices, mostly for processing clients, as well as a

training center on the second floor. The training room will be used to provide housing counseling classes.

“Our goal is put some computers up there and perhaps offer some training in that, as well,” White said.

Center staff and contractors were busy putting finishing touches on the building Wednesday, including updating the security system, making bathrooms ADA compliant, painting walls and cleaning windows.

“It’s been a lot of work, but it’s been good,” Marla Ramos, the center’s housing programs and outreach director. “We plan to reach families that haven’t heard of us. It will be a huge plus for us and the community.”

Greater Joliet Area YMCA expands to Morris

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Morris Community YMCA invites Grundy County residents to take selfies with scarecrows, drink free apple cider and enjoy outdoor activities at the organization’s first open house on Saturday.

A branch of the Greater Joliet Area YMCA, the Morris YMCA found a temporary home in August after months of searching. Through an agreement with the City of Morris, the YMCA is leasing the former city hall building at the corner of Wauponsee and Jefferson streets.

In conjunction with the Grundy County Corn Festival, the YMCA will host an informational event where residents can see the new facility and learn about upcoming programs.

“As we have a daily pres-

ence here in Morris, we wanted to take part in the largest event in Grundy County to let folks know we’re here,” Morris YMCA Operations Director Missy Durkin said.

The open house also will highlight new programs the YMCA plans to offer. Once settled at its new location, the YMCA will offer programs tailored to children and seniors and unveil new fitness and sports-related activities.

Durkin said the YMCA is particularly excited to expand youth basketball by offering it at a second location in Coal City.

“We’ll have materials about that on Saturday,” she said. “We’re excited about that because it will hopefully attract more families to participate and help us reach other parts of Grundy County.”

The downtown location is temporary while the YMCA raises enough funds to build a new, permanent facility in Morris, potentially along Route 6.

roadside checks Tuesday THE HERALD–NEWS news@theherald-news.com LOCKPORT – Lockport police will conduct roadside safety checks with Illinois State Police on Tuesday.

It’s not a holiday, which is when most safety checks occur.

But, Lockport Sgt. Brian Phelan noted in a news release, “Traffic safety is not just a holiday thing, although that’s when we do the bulk of

extra enforcement. We want the public to know that we are committed to this on a daily basis.”

The roadside safety checks will be done at 8 p.m. and midnight on 159th Street east of Adelmann Drive.

“Partnering with Illinois State Police on a weeknight sends the message that at no time is it ever safe to drink and drive, or not wear your seat belt,” Phelan said.

LOCAL BRIEF Joliet shelter in need of food JOLIET – The Daybreak Center in Joliet is running low on food and in need of assistance.

The food pantry at the shelter is in a “desperate state” and running low on food, said Kathleen Langdon, Catholic Charities development and communications director. She said the shelves have been almost empty in the past several weeks and their commercial freezer inoperable.

Langdon said the items the agency needs include cereal, instant potatoes, canned vegetables, canned fruits, desserts, children’s drinks, syrup, pasta, coffee and creamer.

People interested in making a financial contribution can contact the shelter at 815-7233405 and ask for Langdon.

They also can bring food items to the shelter, 611 E. Cass St. “We are so appreciative of anyone who can help us meet this need,” she said.

Joliet to get $1.2M in HUD grants

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The city will receive $1.2 million in federal grants through two programs administered by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Joliet will receive $907,998 in Community Development Block Grants and $383,602 in HOME funding for its 2014 allocation.

The CDBG program provides money for public facilities, infrastructure, job-creation for low- and moderate-income persons, disaster recovery, affordable housing and other projects. HOME funds create affordable housing for low-income households.

In 2013, Joliet received $969,913 in CDBG funds and $377,300 in HOME funds, according to HUD. The CDBG award was considerably more than the $750,000 the city anticipated it would receive, said Alfredo Melesio, Joliet’s director of neighborhood services. On the other hand, the city expected

to receive about $460,000 in HOME funds.

“We always underestimate because we never want to be in a position where we are over-budgeting,” Melesio said.

The bulk of the CDBG funding will improve streets, curbs and storm water sewers in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods. It will also support demolition of dilapidated buildings, graffiti removal and provide homeless services.

Most of the HOME funds will develop two rental units.

The city applied for the funding last fall, Melesio said.

“The planning process always makes us aware of pressing needs in the community,” Melesio said. “Obviously we can move forward on these programs, but there are other projects that we are currently looking at, too. If we change anything, it’s subject to a substantial amendment that would require a public hearing.”

In the past, the city was required to provide an action plan to HUD annually. HUD

would then determine funding in the following year, based on money available and any congressional action affecting the program.

All that will change next year, Melesio said. Starting in 2015, grantees will be told how much money they will receive and then must draft an action plan based on that amount, he said.

“It may make life a little easier,” Melesio said.

Joliet also was recognized

by Ray Willis, HUD’s regional director of community planning and development, as an original grantee from 1975, the year the CDBG program began.

“Joliet has participated in the CDBG program for 40 years, allocating over $43.7 million in CDBG funds to support local programs that improve the lives of low- and moderate-income individuals, empower neighborhoods and reinforce strong families,” Willis said in a letter to Mayor Tom Giarrante. “We offer a special recognition to Joliet for taking a leadership role as a grantee.”

Know more Joliet programs to be funded by CDBG funds include: • Infrastructure improvements: $560,000 to upgrade streets and install new storm sewers, curbs and gutters in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods.

• Homeless services: $75,000 will go to Catholic Charities Daybreak Shelter for health and housing counseling.

• Demolition: $62,000 to demolish five vacant, dilapidated structures.

• Local homestead: The city provides about $8,600 per transaction to low- or moderate-income buyers of houses in program. Total cost is $33,600.

• Graffiti removal: $23,000 to remove graffiti from about 820 locations.

• Neighborhood newsletter: The city will issue a newsletter on community development and housing issues to about 14,000 residents in low- and moderate-income areas. Cost is $15,000.

Programs to be funded by HOME funds include: • Rental program: $216,000 to build, rehab or purchase two rental units.

• Community Housing Development Organizations: $80,000 for housing development by local organizations.

• Down payment assistance: The city will provide down payment assistance to five home buyers at a cost of $50,000.

The number of veterans who fought in conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq is climbing, and he said the challenge next year will be to market the event to them.

“That is the challenge … we’re going to make adjustments next year and that will be a big plus to find more veterans,” Niehaus said.

MAPP program coordinator Jenny Gorszczyk, in a

said in the news release. “The MAPP collaborative has taken information from more than 440 pages of health assessments and synthesized it into one easy-to-read document.”

HOMER GLEN – Gary Niehaus wanted to honor military veterans in a way that would be fun.

When he was invited by a friend to visit Oak Forest, he found his inspiration, coming across a pamphlet from the Oak Forest Veterans Commission about a day of golfing and dining for veterans.

He decided to arrange something similar for Lockport-area veterans.

“I heard about it and got a lot of energy and had a little bit of time on my hands,” said Niehaus, a military veteran himself and chairman of the Lockport Veterans Commission.

He partnered with local businesses and community leaders to create the Lockport Commissions Veterans Golf Outing. The third annual outing was held earlier this month at the Woodbine Golf Course in Homer Glen.

The day of fellowship, golfing and dining brought out

more than 150 veterans and their families, Niehaus said.

The event was free to all Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.

“At the end of the day, you think, ‘Boy, was it worth their time and effort,’ ” he said.

The event also attracted local leaders, such as U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, and Homer Glen Mayor Jim Daley, who helped sponsor the event. Daley said the outing was nice because it honored military veterans.

He congratulated veterans on their accomplishments and listened to their stories while golfing. Daley said he had a close connection to the military because his daughter married a man who fought in Afghanistan.

“I heard how difficult things are,” he said. “It’s a great day to give back and welcome them home.”

The Lockport Veterans Commission partnered with Joliet-based beer distributor Kozol Bros. Inc., to host the event. The company got involved because a deceased

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Goldie Hershman is remembered in Joliet for her work as a teacher and for contributions to the community.

Hershman, who died Sunday in Glenview at the age of 95, was a teacher for 23 years at Marycrest School in Joliet and a community trustee at Silver Cross Hospital.

She was active in the Joliet Jewish Congregation and was the wife of the late Rabbi Morris Hershman, rabbi at the Joliet synagogue for 55 years before his death in 1998.

She also taught school at the synagogue and mentored World War II survivors.

Hershman also taught in Chicago and Maywood.

She contributed her time to organizations such as the Joliet Education Association, Women of Rotary and Jewish Congregation Sisterhood.

Rabbi Charles Rubovits,

now rabbi at Joliet Jewish Congregation, described Hershman as regal. She would always dress and walk perfectly, he said. Hershman would also walk without any help in her older years.

“She would not carry a cane. … She was a very proud woman. Short of stature, but you don’t want to cross her,” he said.

At a bake sale, she could “sell like gangbusters,” he

said. After her husband died, Hershman continued to be involved in the Joliet Jewish Congregation.

The couple raised two children. Rubovits said Hershman insisted she stay alive long enough to see her only granddaughter get married, which happened more than a month ago.

She had a story, quip or joke for everyone, Rubovits said.

“There are those of us who, when we hear a story, we have to write it down … she could remember stories told to her once. She could remember them and she could tell some fabulous stories,” he said.

Hershman had a master’s degree in education.

She often talked about teaching and that teachers were not paid enough, Rubovits said.

“She would get this glint in her eye and say, ‘But they really enjoy what they do,’ ” he said.

The village will purchase property along McEvilly Road that will further its goal of joining bike paths with Channahon and eventually connecting with Lake Chaminwood Preserve.

Trustees approved, 6-0, the purchase of land from Carol Romberg along the DuPage River for $295,000. The property includes a house and an outbuilding that could be used for storage.

Lake Chaminwood, owned by the Forest Preserve District of Will County, is a 120-acre preserve on Shepley Road in Minooka.

The village owns property directly behind the newly purchased land, which was donated when the subdivision was developed, Village Administrator Dan Duffy said. The village is negotiating to annex additional property that would connect with Chaminwood.

“The pieces are coming in line, but we have to acquire property first and then work on the trail,” Duffy said. “The village has wanted to do this for several years now.”

Contract approved for operating engineers Trustees also unanimously approved a collective bargaining agreement with the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 150 public employees division.

The three-year contract includes a 3 percent annual raise, an increase in sick time accumulations, a vacation schedule mirroring police department benefits, and department assignments established to encourage union members to increase skill levels and training programs.

MINOOKA – Minooka trustees tabled a vote Tuesday on a requested permit for a medical marijuana cultivation center in Minooka Industrial Park.

Trustees tied 3-3 in voting to table the permit, proposed for by Medicann LLC, until the October village board meeting.

Mayor Pat Brennan cast the deciding vote.

Trustee Dennis Martin moved to table the vote, saying presenters raised more questions than they answered during their presentation to the village’s Committee of the Whole.

“I think it should be referred back to the appropriate committee and meet with staff before it goes forward,” Martin said.

Minooka resident Laurel Carney-Zelko spoke out against the business Tuesday, saying a marijuana cultivation center would give teens the impression that using drugs was acceptable.

“We don’t need to promote this,” she said. “I don’t see a benefit to our community.”

One resident, who asked not to be identified, supported the cultivation center because his wife is ill and would benefit from medical marijuana.

Trustees Barry Thompson, Terry Houchens and Dick Parrish voted against tabling the vote. Rudy Martin, Dick Martin and Ray Mason voted in favor.

Houchens and Parrish both said they weren’t committing to voting one way or another on the matter, but they wanted to continue discussions.

“I would have liked to [have] been able to discuss the issues in front of the public,” Houchens said. “Tabling it stopped the discussion for the night.”

Parrish said the Committee of the Whole presentation was done well and everything was in place.

Even if trustees approve the center’s special-use permit, a license for the cultivation center would have to be approved by the state. Only one cultivation center is allowed per state police district. Minooka is in District 5, which encompass-

es Will, Grundy and Kendall counties. Several other groups also have proposed cultivation centers in District 5.

The board is expected to consider the issue at its Oct. 28 meeting.

LONDON – Deborah, the dowager duchess of Devonshire, the last of the witty, unconventional Mitford sisters, died Wednesday, her son said.

She was 94.

Brought up in Oxfordshire, England, Deborah was the youngest of the six sisters, including the novelist and historian Nancy Mitford, and writer and social activist Jessica Mitford. Two other sisters were infamous for their right-wing politics. Unity was a friend of Adolf Hitler, and Diana, was the second wife of Sir Oswald Mosley, founder of the British Union of Fascists.

Unmoved by her sisters’ associations, Deborah told the

Daily Telegraph in 2012 that Hitler made little impression on her when she joined her mother and Unity for tea with the Nazi leader in 1937.

“Well, I’ve never been very interested in politics, you see,” she told the newspaper.

“And the truth is that I didn’t give it much thought. If you sat in a room with Churchill you were aware of this tremendous charisma. Kennedy had it, too. But Hitler didn’t – not to me anyway.”

Deborah Vivien Free man-Mitford was born March 31, 1920, and educated with her sisters at the family’s country home.

Known as “Debo,” she was more focused on domestic life than her sisters, marrying Andrew Cavendish, who later became the 11th Duke of Devonshire. Together they transformed Chatsworth House from a deteriorating pile into one of the most-visited histor-

ical properties in Britain.

The vast estate includes a 17th century stately home featuring 175 rooms surrounded by 35,000 acres of land in the heart of a national park in Derbyshire, central England.

She ran the estate’s Chatsworth Farm Shop, selling local game, meat, eggs, cheese, fruit and vegetables.

After her husband’s death in 2004, she moved to a village on the Chatsworth estate.

Less-well known than her famous siblings, she was nonetheless an author in her own right. Among her books are “Wait for Me!: Memoirs of the Youngest Mitford Sister” and “Home to Roost: And Other Peckings,” a collection of essays on subjects ranging from flower arranging to the death of John F. Kennedy, as well as “In Tearing Haste: Letters Between Deborah Devonshire and Patrick Leigh Fermor.”

WILLIAM J. FLAVIN Born: Dec. 29, 1928; in Lockport, IL Died: Sept. 21, 2014; in Lake Charles, LA William J. “Bill” Flavin, age 85, of Lake Charles, passed away Sunday September 21, 2014, at a local hospital, with his loving wife and two daughters at his side.

Mr. Flavin was born in Lockport, on December 29, 1928, to Maurice and Catherine (Keough) Flavin.

Bill was a passionate, lifelong student of learning, an award winning athlete and a big sports fan. He graduated from Lockport Township High School in Lockport, in 1947. He attended St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, and graduated from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1951, with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

First and foremost, Bill was a devoted husband and wonderful father, who provided guidance and support to his eight children, twenty-three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. As a principled man, Bill set an extraordinary example to his family and friends, and leaves a legacy of love that will be impossible to replace. To his grandchildren and great grandchildren he will be forever remembered as their “Papa”.

The grandson of an Irish immigrant, Bill loved and celebrated his Irish heritage year-round--not only on St. Patrick’s Day. Bill was proud to boast of his dual citizenship. He was able to secure his Irish citizenship because of his grandfather’s birth in Ireland.

On August 30, 1952, Bill married Marilyn Agnes Condon. With Marilyn’s incredible support, Bill enjoyed two lengthy and successful careers that spanned 62 years.

Bill began his engineering career by serving from 1952 to 1954, in the U.S. Army at Picatinny Arsenal in Dover, New Jersey, during the Korean War. After military service, Bill returned to Joliet, where he worked for Blockson Chemical Company, now Olin Corporation. Bill was later promoted and transferred to Lake Charles in 1972, as Maintenance Manager for that facility. Bill worked for the company in various technical engineering and managerial roles for 22 years.

In 1976, Bill turned down a promotion with Olin Corporation, that would have caused his family to relocate away from the Lake Charles area. Instead, he embarked on his second successful career.

With a friend he formed a real estate business in Lake Charles that is now Flavin Realty, Inc. Bill worked with Flavin Realty, Inc. for a total of 38 years.

Bill was named the State of Louisiana Realtor of the Year in 1999, the Lake Charles area Realtor of the Year in 1985, 1997 and 2002, and was the recipient of the Louisiana Realtor’s Lawrence R. DeMarcay Jr. Distinguished Service Award in 2006. He was Southwest Louisiana Board of Realtors President in 1992 and 1996. He was active in the LARPAC and numerous other committees with the local and state real estate associations.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Maurice and Catherine (Keough) Flavin; mother and fatherin-law, John and Cecile Condon; sister, Margaret Smego; brother-inlaw, Robert Devine; sister-in-law, Norma Condon; brother-in-law, William Hartmann; grandchild, Kyle Flavin; great grandchild, Sam Flavin; cousins, William, Jack and Betty (Brown) Fitzgerald; and his lifelong friend, Joseph Broderick.

Bill is survived by Marilyn, his loving wife of 62 years. A long time resident of the Joliet/Crest Hill area, she worked as a bookkeeper at the Monroe Hatchery and the Chicago-Joliet Livestock Marketing Center. She was an active member of Theodore Street Lutheran Church for over 40 years.

Nora was the loving mother to Mark (Monica) and Amy (Kevin) Haywood and beloved Granny to grandchildren, Abigail Perin Boyd, Andrew Perin, Simon Haywood, and Molly Haywood Barrett; and great-grandchildren, Haley and Braden Boyd.

After retirement, Nora worked with her “grandkids” in the Foster Grandparent program of Catholic Charities in Joliet public schools where she was named the Grandparent of the Year for 2001.

Even as her memory faded away in the last decade of her life, she maintained her pleasant personality and a positive manner.

Survived by a daughter, Erin (Ted) Mcbride-Schmars of Momence and a son, Steve (Brenda) Uphouse of Dayton, Ohio. There are four grandchildren, Connal, of Momence and Becky, Josh, and Joey of Dayton, Ohio. Also surviving is a brother, Walter Myers of Urbana, Illinois.

Sara was preceded in death by her parents; and a son, Kurt McBride.

She was born December 4, 1929, in Joliet, to Walter and Bula (Nee McLuen) Myers. Sara Married Raymond McBride on June 21, 1948.

He preceded her in death April 30, 1983. She married Leonard Swansbro on November 10, 1996. He preceded her in death on August 23, 2006.

Sara attended Joliet Township High School as well as Joliet Junior College when it was a part of the JTHS Campus. She enjoyed many visits to her home away from home Door County, Wisconsin. Sara was a member of the Homemakers Club, The greater Dayton Emmaus Community, and the Central Presbyterian Church of New Lenox. She traveled a lot with her second husband Leonard on cruises and going to her son’s home in Ohio.

369 applications for medical marijuana facilities received

Illinois received 369 applications to operate medical marijuana facilities, state officials announced Wednesday.

Those applications include 158 for cultivation centers and 211 for dispensaries, officials said.

The number was described as “preliminary.” But it amounts to more than four times the maximum number of licenses the state will make available.

Illinois medical marijuana law limits the number of licenses for cultivation centers to 22 and the number for dispensaries to 60.

State officials did not say where the applicants propose to locate facilities. In a news release, officials said the number of applicants received in each state police district will be announced next week.

The deadline for license applications was Monday.

The state medical marijuana law allows one growing center for each state police district.

Will, Grundy and Kendall counties are in District 5. Several proposals for growing centers have been made to local officials in Joliet and unincorporated Will County.

The state expects to award licenses before the end of 2014 and make medical marijuana available to patients in spring 2015.

Peggy was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church. She was a successful interior designer, owning and operating Custom Coordinates for many years. She was an active person, staying physically fit was a favorite past time along with eating healthy. This sparked her desire to share her knowledge with others and inspired her to start an organization known as Health Watchers. Peggy also loved to vacation, especially in Arizona, but above all, she loved spending time with her family who will miss her dearly.

LEDERER The Associated Press UNITED NATIONS – Confronted by the growing threat of Middle East militants, President Barack Obama implored world leaders at the United Nations Wednesday to rally behind his expanding military campaign to stamp out the violent Islamic State group and its “network of death.”

“There can be no reasoning, no negotiation, with this brand of evil,” Obama told the General Assembly. In a striking shift for a president who has been reluctant to take military action in the past, Obama declared that force is the only language the militants understand. He warned those who have joined their cause to “leave the battlefield while they can.”

The widening war against the Islamic State was just one in a cascade of crises that confronted the presidents, prime ministers and monarchs at the annual meeting of the U.N. General Assembly. Also

vying for attention were Russia’s continued provocations in Ukraine, a deadly Ebola outbreak in West Africa, and the plight of civilians caught in conflicts around the world.

“Not since the end of the Second World War have there been so many refugees, displaced people and asylum seekers,” U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said as he opened Wednesday’s session.

In a rare move, Obama also chaired a meeting of the U.N. Security Council where members unanimously adopted a resolution requiring all countries to prevent the recruitment and transport of would-be foreign fighters preparing to join terrorist organizations such as the Islamic State group.

The American-led military campaign in the Middle East was at the center of much of the day’s discussions. After weeks of airstrikes in Iraq, U.S. planes began hitting targets in Syria this week, joined by an unexpected coalition of five Arab nations: Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Qatar

and the United Arab Emirates.

There were more U.S. and coalition airstrikes Wednesday on both sides of the Syrian-Iraqi border. U.S. and allied planes and drones hit a dozen targets in Syria that included small-scale oil refineries that have provided millions of dollars to the Islamic State, the U.S. officials said.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates took part in addition to U.S. aircraft.

France has also taken part in strikes in Iraq, and British Prime Minister David Cameron’s office announced that Parliament was being recalled to London to debate whether to join the campaign, too.

The Islamic State has made lightning gains in Iraq this year and now moves freely across the increasingly blurred border with Syria. It has claimed responsibility for the beheading of two American journalists and a British aid worker, sparking outrage in the West and contributing to an increase in public support for military action.

The ruddy-faced woman said that even before the rains stopped, the groundwater in her region had been sinking, from about 70 feet below the surface just a few years ago to as much as 260 feet this past summer. While she still can eat and sell the corn, lettuce and other vegetables on her farm, the yield has shrunk.

After a season of record-breaking drought across China, groundwater levels have hit historic lows this year in northeast and central parts of China where hundreds of millions of people live.

Reservoirs grew so dry in agricultural Henan province that the city of Pingding-

Mars mission opens India for space business

By KATY DAIGLE The Associated Press NEW DELHI – India celebrated putting a spacecraft into orbit around Mars on Wednesday, hoping the rare feat will show the world it is open for business in space exploration and inspire a new generation of homegrown scientists to help drive growth.

Those motivations help explain why India, a poor country of 1.2 billion, even

invests in a space program when so many of its people lack access to proper toilets, electricity and health care.

For one, boosting its space business has always been a key selling point of the country’s program.

More than half of the world’s missions to Mars so far have failed. In proving it can pull off a complex space mission, India becomes one of the world’s few reliable ferrymen to the stars. That can

attract investors, commercial launch orders and customers to hire Indian rockets and satellites for their scientific research.

But the program also is a source of pride and motivation for the country’s burgeoning ranks of young professionals. India’s robust scientific and technical education system has already produced millions of software programmers, engineers and doctors who have

helped grow the country’s growing middle class.

“Mars, of course, captures the imagination of the world.

What better goal is there to reach for, to prove we can accomplish our goals?” said B.N. Raghunandan, engineering dean at the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore. Every time India launches another rocket, he said he is bombarded by students asking how they can get into the school’s aerospace engineering program.

Home where heart is – and many officials Chicago has a lot over Springfield – more people, more shopping, the new David Bowie art display, better pizza.

But it doesn’t have the state Capitol, at least not yet, and that’s something those elected to represent people in Illinois should remember.

For years, however, the Governor’s Mansion has sat silently empty most of the time as the state’s leader jets in and out from Chicago.

Notice we’re not pinning this all on Gov. Pat Quinn, who does most of his governor-like business from Chicago and seldom sees the inside of the 157-year-old, 16-room mansion in Springfield. Former governor Rod Blagojevich has, by this point, seen more of the inside of a prison cell than the inside of the Executive Mansion.

But as Scott Reeder of the Illinois News Network reported last week, it seems to be a trend among a lot of elected officials.

The state Constitution requires those who hold an elected statewide office to have a residence in Springfield.

None of the current constitutional officers has a primary residence there, Reeder found.

Even more, those who have a residence in Springfield to meet the constitutional requirement are getting monthly expenses to pay for them.

Treasurer Dan Rutherford and Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka each get $1,500 a month, followed closely by Secretary of State Jesse White’s $1,250. Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon is reimbursed $935, and Attorney General Lisa Madigan gets $850, according to lease agreements Reeder obtained.

Granted, in the bottomless well that is the state budget, this is a mere pittance. But any money that could be used for pressing needs instead of second addresses just seems like a waste.

There’s also the subtle message that gets sent – that Springfield is the theoretical heart of government.

There’s no place like home. Everybody from John Howard Payne to Dorothy in the “Wizard of Oz” knows that.

And if constitutional officials decide they want to spend time safe and snug in their own beds away from Springfield, it’s unlikely voters are going to raise too much of a fuss.

But taxpayers shouldn’t be expected to pick up the tab for elected officials to meet the rules of a job they sought knowing the requirements that came with it.

And while most commentary is currently of the angry variety at the moment, this could be an opportunity – as New York’s Cardinal Timothy Dolan has put it – for some “unity,” for a celebration of common human dignity.

“We believe that love is our mission, and that this mission is the only way we can be fully alive and be who we were created to be,” said a church text published in preparation for the pope’s expected visit to America next fall, when he’s scheduled to attend a

conference on the family. “We believe that this love should be taught, shared and communicated in and through the family, the domestic church.”

This “love is our mission” stuff might sound trite, but it is exactly that kind of basic renewal – and what it could bring for men, women and families – that so concerns the church as of this moment. It’s about people who live their faith in the world and thus serve as beacons to others, providing inspiration and an example of what concrete faith looks like.

To the Editor: Things are starting to look up for Will County – my lifelong home and one of the best places to live, work and raise a family in Illinois.

As a lawyer and president of the Young Democrats of Illinois, I constantly talk with people about the rough economy.

We’re nowhere near where we need to be following the Great Recession, but there are reasons for optimism.

According to The Herald-News, several new businesses – including Popeyes, Potbelly and Chipotle – are setting up shop and investing in our community. It’s a start, and we need to find leaders who will take an active role in attracting businesses to our community.

The 2014 election is approaching. We need to make sure we re-elect Dick Durbin, a senator who has a track record of supporting us as we build our economy. Durbin meets with local leaders so he can better understand the specific challenges our community faces.

In March, he met with the Joliet Chamber of Commerce. A month before that, he discussed infrastructure priorities with the Will County Center for Economic Development. On the national

level, Durbin is fighting to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 so all Americans have an equal opportunity to provide for their families. Unlike his opponent, whose plan would limit a raise in the minimum wage to people over 26, Durbin understands all hard-working Americans deserve a fair wage.

He also is fighting to ensure young adults don’t enter the workforce bogged down with student debt. He has introduced legislation to protect student loan borrowers, to allow student borrowers to refinance at lower interest rates, and to crack down on for-profit colleges that trick students into overpaying for a bad education.

Vote for Sen. Durbin in November so we continue to have an advocate for Will County in the U.S. Senate.

NO ABUSE SHOULD BE TOLERATED BY ANYONE To the Editor: Abuse should not exist in a civilized society. Recent reports indicate that several cases of abuse occur every minute of every day.

Abuse comes in many forms – physical, mental and financial, to mention a few. Lately, physical abuse has been in the

headlines and can be among many – mainly domestic, spousal, elder and/or child abuse.

Disagreements occur between people all the time. Domestic and financial issues, plus children’s behavior, can push a person under stress to act inappropriately. But explanation doesn’t qualify as an excuse.

It seems many times celebrities, politicians, athletes or those politically and/or financially connected individuals get treated differently from we common folk when it comes to these and/or criminal issues. This should not be tolerated. Morals, ethics and the law should be equal for all.

If anything, those of position or status should be role models and held to a higher authority.

We need to strongly teach at home, houses of worship, school and work that abuse of any kind is not to be tolerated. When abuse is documented by strong evidence such as video and/or pictures, and/or physical injury exists, action should be swift and strong. Likewise, accusations without definite proof should be turned over to law enforcement for investigation and recommendation prior to action.

Whether over green beer or after Mass, nothing about Church teaching is going to resonate if the love that Mother Teresa radiated is missing.

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – If Joliet Junior College’s men’s soccer team hoped to remain in the hunt for the North Central Community College Conference title, coach Cris Trillo realized it needed to avenge its only previous league loss against Rock Valley College.

As both squads kicked off the second half of N4C play Wednesday, only one goal was scored – as was the case when the Golden Eagles won Sept. 3 in Rockford.

But this time around, the Wolves connected in the 79th minute and made that stand as they garnered a 1-0 victory to improve to 4-1-1 in the conference and 4-5-1 overall.

Miguel Sanchez got the match-winner on a free kick from just beyond the top of the box that he sent through the wall and just managed to slip inside of the post.

Madison College (Wisconsin), which played to a 1-1 draw against JJC last Wednesday, led the N4C at the midpoint with a 4-0-1 record. The teams close league play Oct. 8 in Joliet.

“We’ve got conference games now back-to-back-to-back, so getting a win today was important to get the momentum going and mentally to give the guys confidence,” Trillo said. “When we played against Triton (a 4-0 win last Friday), we played with such confidence. We were focused and got a couple of quick goals, and the rest was impressive.

“The conference is the most competitive that I’ve seen it in 10 years. It’s real balanced, and there’s no clear favorite. Among the top five teams, anybody can beat anybody. We had more ball possession and shots on goal today, but sometimes I think that they’re just too anxious. After the Triton game, I know that they’re capable of playing very good soccer.”

Trillo’s squad opened the season with three nonconference losses and the Rock Valley defeat, but the coach likes a tough schedule early on because he believes it prepares the Wolves well for N4C play.

Although JJC had more of the run of play and good scoring chances, it had little to show for it as the squads entered the final quarter hour of regulation.

76th minute, the Wolves caught a break when the Golden Eagles (3-6-1, 2-3-1) were called for a hand ball just outside of the box.

That set up Sanchez’s free kick, which found its way through the wall of defenders and into the net to give

JJC the only score it would need.

“It was a hard-fought game that went back and forth, but I thought that we kept up the intensity and kept working hard,” said Sanchez, a Plainfield Central graduate. “We had many chances and missed a lot of them, but

you have to capitalize on the important ones. I just tried to kick it right on the side of the wall and hope that it would go in, and it did.

“We feel like we’ve picked up the intensity and we’re playing harder as a team, and that’s what’s helping us to get the wins. We’re starting to take practices more seriously, and we try to work hard in practices and hope that it shows in the games.”

Both squads had chances in the final minutes. But a corner kick from Leatile Masula (Minooka) was headed away by a Rock Valley defender, and then Luis Lizcano (Plainfield South) returned the favor on a corner kick by Antonio Montoya.

In the opening half, shots by Sanchez, Kyle Hallerberg (Minooka), Masula and Emmanuel Sanchez (Plainfield South) were thwarted, while Wolves keeper Ramiro Ayala (Plainfield South) turned away three good chances and saw another effort bounce off the post.

Shortly after the break, Masula was denied after a long run, and Sanchez had a rebound try of his free kick halted. The teams then experienced a long drought of chances before the Wolves finally collected the match-winner.

Nate Vejvoda, a 6-foot-5, 225-pound Iowa-bound senior tight end, has been a force opposite from Boykin, hauling in 18 passes – three for touchdowns – for 262 yards.

The Celtics’ defense, a week after shutting down Mount Carmel’s vaunted veer attack, slammed the

NEW LENOX – Providence coach Mark Coglianese and his topranked Celtics will take a trip late Friday afternoon to 7740 S. Western Ave., on Chicago’s South Side.

Awaiting the Celtics will be the second-ranked and undefeated Mustangs of St. Rita, and a crowd of about 5,000 is expected.

In the Land of Lincoln’s top attraction Friday night, No.1 Providence will battle No. 2 St. Rita for first place in the Chicago Catholic League Blue and for the top spot in the state, according

to MaxPreps rankings. A tip to Celtics fans: Arrive early.

Providence (4-0, 1-0) features the state’s most prolific passing attack, led by senior quarterback Justin Hunniford. All he has done is complete 79 of 99 passes – 80 percent – for 1,016 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Notre Dame-bound receiver Miles Boykin has caught 30 for 478 yards and 11 touchdowns through the Celtics’ first four wins. In a 37-7 romp over Marmion last week, he caught six for 129 yards and three touchdowns.

“Those two (Hunniford and Boykin) are definitely linked up,” Coglianese said.

CHICAGO – Jake Arrieta pitched seven strong innings to outduel St. Louis’ John Lackey and lead the Cubs to a 3-1 victory Wednesday night over the Cardinals.

Arrieta (10-5), coming off a one-hit shutout against Cincinnati last week, limited St. Louis to two hits and an unearned run while striking out 10.

Bear defense: Bend but don’t break BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush Are the 2-1 Bears a better football team than the 1-2 Green Bay Packers?

Both clubs are perceived to have plenty of offense but liabilities on defense, issues that have shown themselves at various points early this season.

What’s going to happen Sunday? That probably depends as much as anything on whether this Bears defense is better than it was last year.

After three weeks, the Bears rank 23rd in the NFL in total defense, 26th against the run and 16th against the pass. They are 11th in points allowed, first in interception percentage and seventh in QB sack percentage.

At the end of the 2013 season the Bears were 30th in total defense, 32nd against the run, 15th against the pass, 30th in points allowed, fourth in interception percentage and 26th in QB sack percentage.

Through three weeks, the Bears defense is just marginally better against the run but significantly better in points allowed which at the end of the day is the most important stat there is.

Sounds a little like bend but don’t break, aye?

What is a bit puzzling about the Bears early improvement on “D” is the guys who were brought in to make

When asked Wednesday about Jared Allen’s lack of production pressuring the quarterback, defensive coordinator Mel Tucker said “Jared is a complete football player. He does a lot for us on the field. First and foremost, he’s committed to being a run defender. He sets the tone for those guys up front.

He talks about it and he also backs it up with his actions in terms of the run game.”

I asked Tucker if Lamarr Houston has had the impact he’d hoped on the run game. “We talked about it today. We need to find a way to make more plays in the game. We need to find a way to get better in practice this week. We have to. It’s a cliché. But if you don’t get

better week in and week out, you’ve got a big problem because it’s so competitive out there and the margins are so slim. And so that’s our focus right now with Lamarr and anyone.”

The biggest difference against the Jets was in the red zone, where the Jets visited six times and came away with just one touchdown.

Again, bend but don’t break.

Was it because of the Bears “D” or the play of Geno Smith and company?

Tim Jennings thinks it was all Bears.

“It’s always what we do,” Jennings said. “It’s all about that. Any time you can get them six times down there and they only got 1 touchdown, it’s about being able to execute the plays when

we’re down there. We’ve got to hold them to field goals; we don’t want them to score touchdowns. It always comes down to what we do.”

Allen thinks red zone success is about just staying the course.

“I think you don’t want to get too high or too low,” Allen said. “You just got to keep playing, keep playing, keep playing and that’s what we did. Technique and fundamentals. And sometimes you’re going to get stuck in a crappy situation – you’ve got to do it. But I think it shows the character and resolve of the team.”

So what could cause this defense to break? Injuries are a concern, but Tucker says he’s not worried.

“No. We’re just gonna prepare our guys just like we do each and every day,” Tucker said. “We’ll walk the game plan. We’ll make our adjustments during the week. We’ll make sure those guys are sound and solid and ready to play, and then we’ll line up and play.”

OK, sounds good to all of us. But with all due respect to Jennings, this week it will be Aaron Rodgers and company testing the Bears’ all-new defense, not Geno Smith.

We should have a lot better idea of what the Bears have by about 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

“Just knowing that we’ve been through it before,” said Nelson. “We’ve been 1-2 the last two years, so it’s early. Every year is different, every team is different, so we just got to figure out what’s going to work for this team, this year, and ride with that.”

Green Bay’s recent success at Soldier Field, Nelson says, might give the Packers confidence, but he knows that history guarantees nothing, especially with all the changes both teams have undergone.

One such change is the arrival of outstanding rookie Kyle Fuller, who should see plenty of action Sunday lined up across from Nelson.

“He’s doing a great job,” Nelson said. “He’s attacking and that’s what Chicago has always done. You can tell they teach it and preach it there. … He has a knack for getting the ball out, making interceptions, making plays.”

Continuity, connection, reverence Devotees of Mass in Latin find home for worship at Rockdale church

That’s how Sarah Turk of Joliet described the Latin Mass, which St. Joseph Parish in Rockdale has offered each Sunday and weekdays for the last year. Whereas the current English Mass has a celebratory and participation emphasis, Turk said, the Latin Mass focuses on Mass as a sacrificial offering.

“They’re two very different things,” Turk said.

The pastor, Rev. Joseph R. Valentine, is a member of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, which practices the Roman rite as it existed before the Second Vatican Council.

Valentine was assigned to the Diocese of Joliet six years ago, he said.

Valentine was stationed at Sts. Peter & Paul Parish in Naperville, where he offered a Latin Mass every day except Saturday. He also offered a noon Latin Mass on Sundays at St. Bernard in Joliet.

“There’s more silence in this Mass,” Valentine said.

“It gives people more opportunity to unite their personal prayers with those of the entire church.

Then last year, Valentine said the former pastor at St. Joseph’s retired. The diocese decided to combine the Latin Mass devotees with the existing parish at St. Joseph, he said. Valentine now offers the Latin Mass Sunday through Friday at St. Joseph.

The current Mass – in English – is available Saturday evening for people who prefer it. Some parishioners who attended daily Mass in English before the transition and prefer to worship in English now attend weekday Mass at another parish, Valentine said.

Earlier this week, we saw deals in which a balanced fit (both partners had the same number of cards in it) was a better trump suit than an unbalanced. And that will usually be the case. But one time when a 4-4 fit is not best occurs when the trump holding is weak, resulting in an inevitable loser or two, and there are discards available from the other two side suits for those losers if it is the third side suit. This is typically the case in a slam – as in this deal.

When North opens one no-trump, South, with only a five-loser hand, should immediately be thinking about a slam.

He uses Stayman and learns of the 4-4 spade fit. But rather than opt immediately for that suit as trumps, he sensibly shows his club suit first. North rebids three hearts to indicate values in that suit and, by inference, weak diamonds. After that, the auction gets a tad murky around the edges, but South should prefer his strong clubs to those pitiful spades.

In six spades, North must lose one spade and one heart (and would go down two if spades broke 4-1). However, six clubs has 12 tricks: two spades, two hearts, two diamonds and six clubs.

Finally, note that if NorthSouth play transfers into the minors, there would be a strong case for South’s ignoring the spade suit and immediately transferring into clubs.

No single test can diagnose Alzheimer’s Dear Doctor K: My husband’s doctor suspects that he has Alzheimer’s disease and wants him to have neuropsychological testing.

What will these tests involve?

Dear Reader: There is no single test that can diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. In fact, a doctor cannot make the diagnosis with absolute confidence without studying the brain under the microscope, which is rarely done except in an autopsy.

Alzheimer’s disease is diagnosed presumptively by a combination of different types of evidence. The disease typically has a slowly progressive onset. Sudden confusion or speech problems, for example, are not caused by Alzheimer’s.

Indeed, a very important part of making a presumptive diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is first ruling out many other causes of thinking problems. Other conditions, such as a brain tumor, can impair a person’s thinking. So can certain medicines.

When doctors suspect that a person may be developing Alzheimer’s disease, they often perform multiple tests to evaluate different aspects of thinking. The tests may involve paper and pencil, or may be administered by interacting with a computer: • Attention. A major reason people fail to remember new in-

There are many tests to assess attention. For example, the doctor might read a sequence of numbers, then ask the person to repeat back as many as he can remember.

• Memory. Memory testing usually requires that a person listen to or look at some information and then answer questions about it. Or the person may be asked to repeat it back immediately, and then again 10 to 30 minutes later. The doctor might also test long-term memory, things that almost everyone knows that happened long ago.

For example, your husband might be asked to name his birthplace, or who was the president of the United States during World War II. • Executive function. This is an umbrella term for high-level thinking skills. These include reasoning, problem solving, planning, inhibiting impulses and resisting distraction in order to stay focused on a task. These abilities often become impaired in early Alzheimer’s disease.

• Language. Language functions include being able to ex-

press yourself through speaking and writing. They also involve understanding what another person is saying or what you are reading. The doctor may ask the person to name common objects.

For example, the doctor may hold up a pencil and ask your husband what it’s called. Problems with naming and word finding can be early symptoms of Alzheimer’s.

Your husband may be asked to follow instructions or describe a picture in writing.

• Spatial ability. This involves analyzing visual information – shapes, faces, and routes between locations on a map, for example.

Tests may include drawing and copying designs, solving maze puzzles, and putting blocks together to construct a specific pattern.

Neuropsych testing cannot, alone, definitively diagnose Alzheimer’s disease. However, the testing results, along with the medical history, brain-imaging studies and other evidence, can give the doctor pretty strong evidence for or against Alzheimer’s.

He never bothered me again Dr. Wallace: I am the 14-year-old boy who wrote to you some time ago and told you that I hated school and was thinking about running away, or even worse, because a boy at school was picking on me every day. He demanded my lunch money, and if I didn’t give it to him he used me as a punching bag. I had gone to my school counselor and even the principal, but they didn’t do anything.

Even though I was fairly big, I was known as a sissy. I would just take it and never fight back.

You told me to stand up for myself and to defend myself the next time I was bullied. The next time was the next day. I refused to give him my lunch money and he started punching me. I then jumped on him, knocking him down and getting a few good punches in. I wound up with a bloody nose, but he had a lump on his head the size of an egg.

I want to thank you for your advice. I was suspended from school for two days, but it was well worth it. The bully also got a two-day suspension. The great news is that this guy has never bothered me again. In fact, he now talks to me once in a while and I am totally civil toward him.

After you printed my letter and gave me your advice, I noticed the column where a lot of people did not like it that you told me to fight back. It’s easy for them to disagree with you and to say that fighting is never the best way to solve a problem. But they were not in my situation. At times, when I was being pounded and robbed, the thought of ending my life flashed

Over the years, I had many meetings with bullies and their parents. On a second offense, the punishment was always severe.

When this is the case, the victim is on his own.

This is a frightening and complex situation that cannot be solved by a formulaic answer, even one as noble as “turn the other cheek,” which some interpret as meaning “avoid confrontation at all costs.”

This simply won’t work.

Sometimes you have to confront your tormentor – and sometimes doing so means throwing a punch or two.

I say this as a proponent of nonviolence.

But I also believe that when ignoring bullies does not work, you have to speak to bullies in a language they understand. You did so by fighting back.

I truly believe you defeated more than just one cowardly lunch-money extortionist. You defeated your own sense of helplessness in the face of life’s problems.

‘The Notebook’: More strange than startling

By MICHAEL O’SULLIVAN The Washington Post As with “The Tin Drum,” Volker Schlöndorff’s surreally allegorical 1979 film based on Günter Grass’s book about a strangely ageless German boy, it’s hard to interpret the events depicted in “The Notebook” – another book making the leap to the big screen – as anything other than metaphors. But for what, it’s not entirely clear. This adaptation of Agota Kristof’s 1986 novel is impossible to take literally, yet too obscure to read between the lines.

On the most superficial level, the film shows how war hardens the human heart.

Set in Hungary during the final months of World War II, “The Notebook” centers around twin boys (played by real-life brothers András and László Gyémánt) who become twisted into sociopaths by their experience of brutality.

After being left by their moth-

er (Gyöngyvér Bognár) with their grandmother (Piroska Molnár), an abusive alcoholic who lives in a hovel near a German concentration camp, the children gradually turn into monsters.

The boys beat each other with belts and hurl insults at each other, hoping to inure themselves to physical pain and insult. They forgo food, roll in the snow and walk in the open during air raids in an attempt to become impervious to hunger, cold and fear.

At first, these seem like understandable reactions to abandonment, compounded by the mistreatment they receive at the hands of the grandmother, who smacks them around, treats them like slave labor, withholds food from them and steals the care packages mailed to them by their mother. The old woman is a thoroughly nasty person, and it’s no wonder that she’s known to the locals as the “witch.”

But the boys quickly begin to evince behavior that goes well beyond what one might expect from children in similar straits. They compulsively kill insects and then – in a shocking and, quite frankly, implausible series of escalations – do much, much worse.

Most bizarrely, they befriend both the Nazi commander of the concentration camp (Ulrich Thomsen), a creepy pedophile who admires their Spartan regimen, and a kindly old Jewish shoemaker (János Derzsi) who gives them free boots.

To all appearances, they are motivated neither by ideology nor human feeling.

Rather, their actions seem dictated by the necessities of the fiction, the point of which is never clear.

It would be unfair to expect verisimilitude from a tale like this. Like Oskar from “The Tin Drum,” the unnamed twins aren’t real people so much as, I don’t know,

manifestations of the schizoid post-war Hungarian national psyche, or something.

Inseparable throughout the film, they agree to do something at the end of the movie that is utterly preposterous, even given the bizarre occurrences that have already taken place. (As in “Drum,” there is a scene of sex with an older woman that seems a gratuitous attempt to shock, as well as other odd episodes that lend “The Notebook” the flavor of magic realism.) Yet the ending of the film is not just bizarre, but emotionally unsupported. That would be fine, if only I could figure out what all this was meant to stand for.

• “The Notebook” received two out of four stars. The film is rated R and contains violence, nudity, sexuality, obscenity and mature thematic material. It is in Hungarian and German with subtitles and runs 112 minutes.
