IDOT, FHA drop appeal of Illiana court ruling

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Wednesday the state agency is following the Federal Highway Administration’s lead by voluntarily dismissing its appeal of a recent court decision that ruled the federal government’s approval of the Illiana Expressway project invalid.

“The project remains on indefinite hold,” Guy Tridgell, spokesman for IDOT, said in an email Wednesday.

Doug Hecox, spokesman for the FHA, confirmed Wednesday the administration’s decision to voluntarily dismiss its appeal but declined to comment further.

“No, we’re not offering any comment. [The agency does not] comment on litigation,” he

said.

In a news release, the Chicago-based Environmental Law & Policy Center – a major opponent of the $1.3 billion tollway proposed project – said the FHA’s reversal means the Illinois Department of Transportation’s and Indiana Department of Transportation’s “fundamentally flawed” environmental impact statement process “must start over and use much more realistic data.”

The project’s fate has changed several times in the past year with turnover in administrations – the project saw significant support from former Gov. Pat Quinn – and the June federal court ruling.

The court ruled a critical piece in the FHA’s record of decision – handed down late last year – was “arbitrary and capricious” and violated federal

environmental law because the environmental impact study “did not substantiate the purpose and need” for the tollway project.

The court ruled the study was based on a faulty “no build” analysis and failed to consider alternatives.

The proposed 47-mile tollway would connect Interstate 55 in Wilmington to Interstate 65 in Indiana. Supporters have said the tollway would relieve traffic congestion on Interstate 80 south of Chicago and create much-needed jobs. Critics – including the ELPC – say it’s financially risky.

John Greuling, president and CEO for the Will County Center for Economic Development, declined to comment until he learned more about the administration’s decision and its impact on the project.

Plainfield parents meet with Pace on transportation issues

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Parents of students with disabilities raised concerns about transportation issues at a forum that invited a Pace representative.

The parents, whose children are part of the Plainfield School District 202 transition programs, had questions for Pace at Wednesday’s forum on how they could make the public transportation system work more easily for their children.

Their children use public transportation to travel to work or internships as they seek to become more independent.

Dee Graves, district assistant director of transition services, said the forum was held so Pace could meet with parents who had concerns. Public transportation is difficult to arrange for people in Plainfield, she said.

“For students with disabilities, it’s even tougher. We do have programs in Will County like Dial-a-Ride but for any

type of consistency, our parents have really struggled with finding availability with regards to transportation,” she said.

Also in attendance at the forum was representatives from the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living.

Sam Knight, a community organizer from the center, told parents at the forum they need to make sure they are informed as much as possible about public transportation. He said they should understand there are different transportation staff they will contact daily who may not know their needs.

“It’s a tricky system,” Knight said. “I used to live in Cook County … the public transportation system there was much better. When I moved here to take this job – because I use paratransit and public transportation – it’s challenging for me. … I’m still learning the ins-and-outs of Will County. … The better educated [the more] we don’t get frustrated and we’re helping the system overall.”

A Pace community relations representative at the forum answered questions from parents on how they could improve public rides for their children, as well as gathering information for more research.

Parents were curious about the geographic area of Plainfield Township and bus routes that run through it.

Another recommendation for parents was to use the Pace ADA Paratransit service, which is required by federal law for customers with disabilities or health conditions that prevents them from using CTA or Pace fixed route services, according to Pace’s website.

Knight told parents if they use paratransit service, they should not set an exact pickup and dropoff time.

“Always give yourself a cushion. Give them a cushion and allow for it to work. It’s going to have kinks in it, as you guys figured out. Don’t expect it to be perfect, it’s public transportation. We have to work to make it better,” Knight said.

Dwight fire caused by faulty heater

DWIGHT – Firefighters responded Wednesday afternoon to a fire at a medical marijuana cultivation center in Dwight.

Dwight Fire Chief Paul Johnson said crews responded about 3:40 p.m. to PharmaCann Cultivation Center and found a fire in the northwest corner of one of the cultivation rooms in the 20,000-square-foot greenhouse.

“The fire was caused by a malfunction in a gas heater and there was a gas line involved,” Johnson said. “We had it controlled in the first five minutes.”

He said the greenhouse is in the final stages of construction and there wasn’t any marijuana at the location of the fire.

“The fire was unintentional and not due to or related in any way to the cultivation of cannabis,” Johnson said. “It’s no different than if it were to happen at a warehouse.”

Johnson estimated the damage at about $20,000, but said the fire district has not been in contact with the owners yet.

A construction worker was treated and released by first responders at the scene.

Dead trees replaced along Memorial Walk at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery

ELWOOD – Ash trees that offered shade and arboreal appeal to the Memorial Walk at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood have died from infestation by the emerald ash borer.

On Wednesday, many of those trees came down and were replaced – one of the jobs done by 35 volunteers who joined the first national Saluting Branches day of service.

Arborists and horticulturalists contributed their efforts, skills and machinery across the country to improve the appearance at 27 of the national cemeteries where veterans are buried.

“I’m a certified arborist and an American,” Jeff Marrs with Stump’s Tree Care said when asked what brought him Wednesday to Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery. “I have quite a few friends who are buried here and at national cemeteries around the country.”

Marrs said there was a lot of need when it came to tree service at the Elwood cemetery, which he described as being “chiseled out of the forest.”

“It’s nice for them to get this much work done all at once and have budgeted money they can spend on other stuff,” Marrs said. “There’s an endless amount of trees here to cut and trim.”

Cemetery Director Sean Baumgartner said plans were being made to remove the ash trees when the Saluting Branches volunteers offered their services.

“The emerald ash borer has just devoured a number of our ash trees over the years,” said Baumgartner, who called the volunteer effort “a wonderful thing.”

The day of service was organized by Rainbow Treecare, a tree service company in Minnetonka, Minnesota, that grasped the need for arborist volunteerism at national cemeteries after doing such an event three years ago at Fort Snelling National Cemetery

in Minneapolis.

Mark Nega, territory manager for Rainbow’s Chicago office, said he was helping organize Saluting Branches for Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield when it became evident Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery should be added.

“This has come together in two months,” Nega said of the local effort.

Across the country, planning has been in the works for three years, and more than 1,100 volunteers participated.

Will address shortage of science and mathematics teachers

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Lewis University earned a $1.4 million grant that will not only benefit its students but students from several other colleges and school districts.

The National Science Foundation awarded the Romeoville-based Catholic university a grant for a program designed to help recruit and prepare future math and science teachers. The program aims to increase the number of those teachers for schools in need of them.

The program will fund 36 scholarships during a five year period and recruit undergraduate majors in biology, chemistry, math and physics.

Those students will prepare to become sixth- through 12thgrade math or science teachers under the program.

Joliet Junior College, College of DuPage, Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, Three Rivers Manufacturers Association, Valley View School District 365U, Joliet Public Schools District 86 and Community High School District 218 will benefit from the grant.

“I’m thrilled. It was very much a collaborative effort that took place. … Lots of thought and different suggestions. We’re just very excited to start working on it,” said Dorene Huvaere, a Lewis University professor who led the team that applied for the grant.

“We know there is a market out there. The more we can encourage K-12 students to move into the STEM field, it’s a benefit for them and our society.”

Huvaere said science, technology, engineering and mathematics are becoming more important in education.

She said there is a need for teachers in those fields as the pace of technological development picks up.

“We know there is a market out there. The more we can encourage K-12 students to move into the STEM field, it’s a benefit for them and our society,” she said.

Lewis University applied for the grant because of the increasing number of students going into STEM. The grant money will allow students to access scholarships and participate in a series of workshops, Huvaere said.

Not only will those workshops be open to Lewis University students, but they will be available to students from JJC and other schools, she said.

“We don’t usually have that opportunity to do that, so it’s a great piece,” Huvaere said.

Peter Linden, JJC career and technical education dean, said he plans on learning more about how the college will benefit from the grant.

“Anything that promotes STEM-centric career paths is not only a dire need but something the college supports fully,” Linden said.

Research conducted under the program by Lewis University staff will allow them to contribute to the advances of educating math and science teachers. This research also will let them address the shortage of those teachers in schools with a high need for them.

Among those at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery was Beth Corrigan, a specialist with the Community Trees Program at Morton Arboretum in Lisle.

Corrigan said it is important to remove dead ash trees – not only for aesthetics but for safety.

“They are very dry and brittle,” Corrigan said. “A lot of trees will stand dead for a long time. Ash trees are not one of them.”

Locals travel to D.C. to see the pope

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com R. Dale Evans planned to be at the U.S. Capitol building by 3:30 a.m. Thursday, which should give him plenty of time to find a spot on the lawn to see a telecast of Pope Francis’ speech to Congress.

Evans, a member of the Joliet Township High School board, said he wants to be there early to share the moment with others who are coming to see Pope Francis on his first visit to the United States.

“I’m a Baptist by faith, but I definitely think he’s been speaking about things that other religious leaders have not in the way he has – or just don’t have the platform for,” Evans said.

Pope Francis is getting a lot of attention, including from people in the Joliet area traveling to Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia to see him on his visit.

Those travelers include Bishop R. Daniel Conlon and Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Siegel from the Diocese of Joliet.

The bishops arrived Tuesday night in Washington, Diocese of Joliet spokesman Ed Flavin said. Their schedule has been a full one, including a prayer meeting Wednesday morning in which the pope met with American bishops at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle.

Flavin is among 100 specialists brought in to Washington to handle media relations during the pope’s visit.

The big event Wednesday was a Mass with the pope celebrated at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.

“People have been here since 5 [Wednesday] morning just to get into this church,”

“It’s good to see so much of a positive vibe.”

Ed Flavin Diocese of Joliet spokesman Flavin said.

Flavin’s job was to provide details of the pope’s activity inside the basilica to reporters not allowed inside.

“It’s extremely exciting,” Flavin said. “It’s good to see so much of a positive vibe.”

Lines are long, he said, and security is tight.

Laura Munoz, a student at the University of St. Francis in Joliet, considered the crowded venues and began to have second thoughts before she decided to go ahead and travel to Washington with fellow student Princess Clemente.

“But then I thought, ‘Will I ever have this chance again?’ ” she said. “Now, I’m really glad I went.”

Munoz and Clemente were able to get tickets for the Capitol building lawn that place them near to where the pope will appear after his speech to Congress.

“He is coming out right after that,” Munoz said. “We’re going to be up close.”

Munoz, like Evans, received tickets through the office of U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville. Members of Congress were given 50 tickets each to distribute to constituents who are able to watch the speech telecast outside as Pope Francis addresses Congress.

Brother James Gaffney, the president of Lewis University, will be among 535 citizens attending the speech as guests inside the House chamber. Gaffney is Foster’s guest.

Francis was enthusiastic in his embrace of Obama’s climate change agenda, specifically praising the president for taking steps to reduce air pollution. In a firm message to those who doubt the science of climate change, he said the warming planet “demands on our part a serious and responsible recognition” of the world that will be left to today’s children.

Plainfield buys 800 more trees to replace downed ashes

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Plainfield chopped down 1,750 diseased ash trees over the summer, making way for the purchase of hundreds of new trees to take their place.

The Village Board approved Monday the purchase of about 800 parkway trees from the Suburban Tree Consortium at a cost of no more than $200,000.

The purchase comes five months after the village bought 220 trees from the consortium. That was before the village’s public works department realized the high number of diseased trees.

“This year was a very unique year in that when we began there were over 1,800 ash trees showing signs of distress and infestation to the point they needed to be removed,” Director of Public Works Allen Persons said to the board.

have been succumbing to a regional infestation of the invasive emerald ash borer beetle.

“In the past, we had never removed more than 1,000 trees in any given year, so this is a huge feat to remove 1,800 in a year ... 1,700 in three months,” he said.

The village contracted out tree removal services for larg-

er diseased trees and rented a heavy-duty tree and brush chipper that worked so well they decided to buy it at a $47,676.25 cost Monday.

Since 2011, the village has removed 4,159 ash trees, leaving 1,163 remaining as of Monday. Before 2015, the most ash trees removed in a year was 1,008 trees in 2013, according to village data. The most trees planted before this year was 738 trees in 2014. The quick work has Plainfield on an ambitious schedule to start planting the first of those 800 new trees by next month.

The board also authorized Monday awarding the 2015 roadwork patching program to “D” Construction for $120,152.50, awarding roof repair work on two municipal buildings to Adler Roofing for $67,740.50 and awarding repair work to the 13-year-old heating and air conditioning system for village hall to Trane Building Services for $28,000.

PLAINFIELD – Last year’s road salt was pretty expensive.

For Plainfield, it cost $107.20 a ton. The village was one of many municipalities that, for the first time in a long time, didn’t receive any salt bids through the state’s Central Management Services, or CMS. The low supply from a rough 2013-14 winter season, combined with increased demand from local road districts’ heavy use of salt, led to high prices for municipalities that didn’t receive a bid through the CMS. But this year, Plainfield received a bid through CMS for a price of $62.61 a ton.

CMS matches salt suppliers with municipalities and regulates the process so municipalities get good rates.

On Monday, the Village Board of trustees approved the purchase of up to 4,800 tons of salt from Morton Salt Inc. at that price. The purchase came after the village looked at several other options.

“Earlier in the season, we were looking at what Naperville was requesting,” Director of Public Works Allen Persons said, noting there was talk about partnering with the neighboring city. “They went out to bid for 10,000 tons of salt. The lowest bid came in at $85, more than they had anticipated. They were leaning

toward rejecting the bids.”

Plainfield also looked at joining neighboring communities and counties on salt purchases, but it put in a bid through the state program.

With about 1,000 tons of salt in storage, the purchase gives Plainfield 5,800 tons to work with this winter.

The most road salt the village used in a winter was about 5,000 tons in 2009-10, Persons said, adding that the average usage a year is between 3,000 and 3,500 tons. The village spent 3,000 tons on last season’s rough blizzards.

Man arraigned on Joliet man charged with child porn possession, dissemination murder charges

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Crest Hill man charged in the strangling death his ex-girlfriend was arraigned Wednesday on murder charges.

Cesar Garcia, 27, said nothing when Judge Daniel Rozak called him to the bench. Will Cesar Garcia County assistant public defender Amy Christensen did not require the judge to read the three counts of murder into the record and Rozak assigned the case to Judge Amy Bertani-Tomczak.

Garcia, who was wearing a blue jumpsuit, sat in the front row of the jury box and leaned forward with interest as other

cases were called. He is being held in the Will County Jail on $10 million bond.

On Aug. 25, concerned relatives called Crest Hill police after being unable to contact Laura V. Gonzalez, 22. Police have said they went to Gonzalez’s apartment in the 1800 block of Marlboro Lane to find her dead inside and Garcia taking pills in an apparent suicide attempt.

Prosecutors said Garcia strangled Gonzalez in the kitchen, telling her, “If I can’t have you, no one else will,” before moving Gonzalez into the back bedroom and placing her on the bed.

Garcia had been living with Gonzalez until June 20 when he was arrested on two counts of domestic battery against her and ordered not to have any contact with her, according to court records.

Joliet police obtained a warrant and searched Turley’s home in the 3400 block of Meadow Lily Drive on Tuesday morning, Joliet Deputy Carl H. Police Chief Al Roechner said. Turley “During the

search, [Turley] told them he had two rifles in his bedroom closet but did not have a firearm owner’s identification card,” Pelkie said.

Turley was arrested on three counts of possession of child pornography, one count of disseminating child pornography and one count of unauthorized possession of a firearm. He was booked into the Will County Jail.

Accountant: Minooka in good financial position

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – The village of Minooka was issued a clean opinion of its April 2015 audit Tuesday night by accountant Brian Zabel of Brian Zabel & Associates.

Zabel said he had no concerns about the village’s ongoing fiscal liability.

The fiscal year ended with $9.4 million in cash and investments, down about $2,000 from the previous year. The village’s net position is still very strong, Zabel said, at $92 million.

“You were able to pay down about $1.3 million in debt during the year,” he said at the village board meeting Tuesday.

“In doing so, your reserves are in pretty good order.”

The only negative news in the report, Zabel said, was a $125,000 loss the village incurred earlier this year on an investment through the Illinois Metropolitan Investment Fund.

Illinois State Police Sgt. Fred Rivera said at 5:44 p.m.

William H. Heisner was driving west on Offner Road in a Toyota Prius when he began crossing Route 45.

“A Lincoln Continental driven by Damian Storey, 24, of Bourbonnais was northbound on 45 and had just come back in the lane after passing a car and truck when he saw the Prius starting to roll through the stop sign,” Rivera said.

The Continental struck the Prius on the driver’s side door. Heisner was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox and pronounced dead at 7:05 p.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Storey also was taken to Silver Cross Hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening. He was ticketed for driving without insurance, Rivera said.

Neither vehicle contained passengers.

Walter was born in Prairie Point, Mississippi on February 10, 1976 to Walker Lee Davis Sr. and Ginny Davis.

Walker attended Joliet Public Schools, graduating from Joliet West Township High School. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He loved playing basketball and family and friends gathering.

He also received his CDL Trucking License. Walker accepted Christ at an early age, where he joined the Church of the Complete Gospel and was baptized under the leadership of Pastor Susan Dailey as his Lord and Savior.

He was preceded in death by his loving mother, Ginny Davis; his grandmother, Mary Davis, his grandfather, McCune Davis; aunt, Mrs. Lodell Taylor-Tilman, and uncle, McCune Davis, Jr. Walker leaves to cherish his memories, his father, Walker L. WILLIAM H. HEISNER William H. Heisner “Bill”, age 54, of Peotone, passed away unexpectedly as a result of an automobile accident on Tuesday, September 22, 2015.

He is survived by his four brothers, Bernard (Susan) of Fairview Heights, John of Onarga, Kent (Karen) and Dean both of Peotone; and many nieces and nephews.

Bill was a lifetime dairy farmer and in Bill’s younger years, he was a member of the 4-H and the FFA. He enjoyed tractor pulling, farm toy collecting, going to county fairs, antiques and antique mall shopping, collecting and reading old farm magazines, watching history programs on PBS, and spending time with family and friends. Bill was also a devoted and lifetime member of St. Paul United Church of Christ and a member of the Men’s Fellowship League where he enjoyed activities such as Dartball.

Funeral service for Bill will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, September 26, 2015 at St. Paul United Church of Christ, 140 S. Thelma St., Manhattan, with Rev. Carol Currier-Frighetto officiating. He will lie-in-state at church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Furthering his education at Loyola, he received a master’s degree in Business.

Mike moved to California in 2002 where he loved driving by “The Lake” daily, after living in the Chicago suburbs since the 70’s. Mike loved spending time with his family, and being a grandpa and uncle. He loved sports, music, comic books and reading the funnies. Mike had a very unique sense of humor that everyone adored.

We will miss you deeply, JAJA. May you forever rest in peace.

Ronald Lee Byland, Sr., age 83, of Minooka, and formerly Ludlow, Kentucky, passed away September 22, 2015 at Heritage Health in Dwight.

Born September 3, 1932 in Ludlow, Kentucky, Ronald was a son of the late Dorcey and Pearl Byland. He was raised and educated in Ludlow and went on to honorably serve in the U.S. Army. Ron played the clarinet in the Army Band, which allowed him to travel throughout Europe with his new wife Joyce (nee Reed). He went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Sales and Marketing from the University of Kentucky, and was hired by Fruit of the Loom. He eventually became vice president and retired after seventeen years. He then opened J & R Wearhouse which he operated for ten years, and also worked with John Greene Realty in Naperville.

Ronald had a passion for photography; was a member of the Morris Camera Club and chaired the photo contests during the Grundy County Corn Fest, as well as the Minooka Village Hall city garage sales for several years. Ronald held his private pilot’s license and will be remembered for his enjoyment of flying, riding his Goldwing motorcycle, and traveling. Many memorable trips were spent visiting the National Parks, and Door County Wisconsin was one of his favorite destinations.

Having experienced a wonderful full life, Ron’s greatest accomplishment was his family and he cherished every moment spent with them all.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Joyce; children, Ronald, Jr. (Stephanie) Byland of MN, and Steve (Patty) Byland and Nancy (Alan) Lindmark, both of Minooka; seven grandchildren, Stephanie (William) Thompson of Minooka, Timothy (Terri) Byland of NC and Hannah, Joshua, Lindmark, Lindmark and Emily Lindmark all of Minooka; seven great grandchildren; and one cousin, Sandy (Terry) Keller of Ludlow.

Ronald was preceded by his parents; and brother, Jerry.

MARGARET R. MANTOVANI Margaret R. Mantovani (nee Sarnicki), age 91. Passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2015, at Vitas Hospice at Franciscan St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights.

Preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Aloysius F. “Lou” Mantovani; her parents, Thomas and Anna (nee Macko) Sarnicki; one sister, Ann Hunch; brothers, Thomas and John Sarnicki and an infant brother Michael.

Marge was born in 1924, in Joliet and a life-long resident. She graduated from Joliet Township High School and for over sixty years remained close with JTHS friends including Eleanor, Cecilia, Jean, Julie, Phyllis, Delores and Helen. She was a former of SS Cyril and Methodius Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Joliet and a current member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Member of the “over 55 club” of St. Patrick’s Church and member of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association.

In later life, she enjoyed participating with friends in senior bowling leagues in Joliet and traveling with Lou, especially to Italy, Paris, Prague and Slovakia where she visited her Slovak relatives. Margaret was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Survived by her four sons, Robert (Barbara), James, David (Lina) and Paul (Deborah) Mantovani; her grandchildren, Kevin (Jana), Joel (Heather), Brian (Brandie), Ignacio (Rhea), Victor (Marcela), Viviana, Jessica and Jacob; ten great-grandchildren; one brother, George Sarnicki and one sister, Agnes Volk-Opila; and

numerous nieces and nephews.

Marge was very grateful to the loving care provided over the past seven years by all of her care givers and especially her “angels” Mattie and Leah, who provided her with great support and friendship.

A celebration of the life of Margaret R. Mantovani will be held at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home 2320 Black Road in Joliet on Friday, September 25, 2015, from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. A funeral procession will then proceed to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church for a funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery Mausoleum in Romeoville.

BERTHA L. McMILLIN Born: July 8, 1928 Died: Sept. 21, 2015

Bertha L. McMillin, age 87, of Coal City passed away peacefully on Monday, September 21, 2015, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home.

Born July 8, 1928, in Coal City, Bertha Laurine was a daughter of the late Henry Jacob and Ida Molly Facinelli-Marketti. She was a graduated from Coal City High School with the class of 1946, and on November 16, 1947, Bertha married Mack Edwin McMillin in St. Peters Lutheran Church in Coal City.

Top-ranking Mormon leader dies at 86; was in governing body

By BRADY McCOMBS The Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY – Mormon leader Richard G. Scott died Tuesday at the age of 86 – leaving the religion with three openings on its top governing body for the first time in more than a century.

Scott died from natural causes at his home in Salt Lake City surrounded by his

family, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said in a statement. Scott had been a member of a church governing body called the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles since 1988.

He is the third top member of the quorum to die this year, leaving three vacancies on the quorum for the first time since 1906, church officials said.

After high school, and prior to starting her family, Bertha worked at Bailey Hardware and Printing where she initially learned accounting. After her daughters went to school she then returned back to work at Coal City Courant. Bertha later spent ten years in payroll with Barnard & Burke at Peoples Gas, and went on to retire after holding employment with the Coal City Public Library.

Bertha was a thirty year member of the St. Peters Lutheran Church in Coal City, before joining New Hope where she was a member for forty years. In 2003 she joined the Coal City United Methodist Church, and as an active church member throughout her life, Bertha enjoyed singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She was a long-time member of the Junior League which pioneered the kindergarten in Coal City, and continued to enjoy meeting with the members of the group.

Bertha also volunteered and delivered for Meals on Wheels for many years. Bertha loved the Chicago Cubs, and as an avid Cubs Fan, she could always be found taking stats during the games. She enjoyed cooking, reading, needlework, puzzles, number games and dominos. Bertha took great pleasure

in traveling, and enjoyed many memorable trips to Door County.

She will most be remembered for her love of family.

Survivors include her two daughters, Kristine (Fred) Davidson of Coal City, Karen McMillin (Emily Gage) of Oak Park; special nieces, Monica (Cragg) Burgess of Goose Lake and Jan Walker of Morris; five grandchildren, Valarie (Tom) Berger of Racine, WI, Amy (Dave) Fowler of Romeoville, Ann (David) Droge of Russellville, KY, Patty (Dan) Rodwick of Jefferson City, MO, Paul McMillin Gage of Oak Park; nine great grandchildren, Kayla, Rebecca, Austin, Lauryn, Ryan, Carter, Abigail, Samantha, and Jacob; many special nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, as well as a special cousin, Dee Provance of Diamond and a host of wonderful friends.

Bertha was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Mack on September 2, 2013; infant son, Paul Harold; one sister, Henrietta (Pat) Mallaney; and one brother, Marcus (Ann) Marketti.

Per Bertha’s request, green flameless cremation rites have been accorded.

Madelyn “Madge” Szabo, was peacefully taken to Heaven on September 19, 2015.

Preceded in death by loving husband, Steven, of 62 years.

Survived by seven daughters, Catherine Ann “Sandy” Creswell, Christine Rose (Thomas) Payne, Carol Jean (Brian) Hendricks, Colette Marie Szabo (Michael) Mulligan, Constance Helen Szabo (Randy) Schmucker, Clarissa Joan (Edward) Moholick and Carla Elizabeth Szabo.

Eight grandchildren, Lisa Creswell, Allison Payne, Jacob Hendricks, Cameron Payne, Heather Hendricks, Colin Mulligan, Michael Beatty and Kalea Fincher. Two great-grandchildren, Summer Wright and Anthony Wright.

Madge was born on October 22, 1929, in Joliet, IL. She spent her childhood growing up in Stamford, CT before moving to Toledo, Ohio at age 15 where she met High School Sweetheart and husband, Steve.

She was very proud of her time in Nursing School in Toledo, OH. Madge was a devoted wife and Mother. She worked as a registered nurse in Ohio and Michigan until the family moved to Urbana, IL in 1961. She raised her children and worked until 1974, when the family returned to Joliet.

Madge loved the arts and music, encouraging all of her girls to learn music and play the piano, flute and violin. She enjoyed listening to classical and jazz music. Throughout her life, she spent time sewing, quilting, knitting, watercolor painting and creating crafts. She read numerous books and assembled a large collection of magazines. It was important to Madge that her children experience new foods by cooking recipes she found in these collections. Her favorite travels included trips to Hawaii, Florida, Boston, British Columbia, San Antonio and Tucson. She loved her flowering plants inside and outside her home.

Madge was an avid birdwatcher, especially enjoying goldfinches and hummingbirds. Although she was a late adopter of using the computer, she liked searching the internet and

several great-nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Helen M. Wheeler will be held Thursday, September 24, 2015, with a visitation hour for residents and staff beginning at 8:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home. Visitation and services will continue Thursday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, 310 N. Broadway St., Joliet, where she will lie-in-state from 10:30 a.m. until services begin at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery.

HELEN M. WHEELER Helen M. Wheeler (nee Horn), age 91, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, September 22, 2015, at Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home.

Born in Joliet, she was a long time Joliet area resident and a former resident of Springfield, MO. A graduate of St. Peter Lutheran School, Class of 1938 and Joliet Township High School, Class of 1942. She was employed at the American Institute of Laundry for over 32 years and retired from Home Savings and Loan. Helen was a lifelong and active member of St. Peter Lutheran Church.

Preceded in death by her husband, Merritt Wheeler (1999); her parents, Charles and Marie Horn; her sisterin-law, Marialice Horn; and her greatniece, Annie Phillips.

Diane Marie Stevens, age 60, of Morris passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday morning, September 20, 2015.

Survived by her lifelong soul mate of 36 years, Christian Stevens; son, Andrew Stevens; daughter, Shannon Stevens; future daughter-in-law, Amy Johnson; and beloved granddaughters, Aubriella and Allie. Also survived by her brother, Neil Sisson; sister-inlaw, Brenda Sisson; several nieces and nephews; mother-in-law, Valaida D’Alessio; and several brothers and sisters-in-law.

Preceded in death by her parents, Rita (Rizzo) and Paul Sisson; fathersin-law, Paul D’Alessio and Terry Stevens; her brother, Brian Sisson; and her sisters-in-law, Jane Sisson and Marianne Adams.

Diane was born in Cleveland, Ohio on January 14, 1955. She graduated from Tremper High School in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Diane was the Secretary/Treasurer of Conveyor Specialties, Inc. and Stevens Properties, Inc. - both family owned and operated businesses. Diane was an active member of the Joliet and Morris Invitational Racing Pigeon Clubs, which she enjoyed with her husband and many friends.

She enjoyed fishing, especially in her backyard lake, shopping, vacationing in Florida, and most of all, spending time with her family and friends. She was the true spirit of Christmas, a soulful chef, animal lover, and thrived in the outdoors.

Above everything, she was a faithful partner, trusted friend, doting mother, and proud grandmother, lovingly known as Grandma Peaches. Her boundless excitement, infectious laugh, selfless nature, and loving heart will be greatly missed.

The family would like to thank Dr. Mansoina Bewaja, the nurses of Joliet Area Community Hospice, especially her nurse, Linda, and her caretakers, Kelly, Crystal, and Karsyn of Absolute Home Care Plus, for the care, attention, and love they gave.

She very much appreciated her time with the Christian Women’s group and Bible Study. She was a proud member of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly).

She cherished this group and the friends she made along the way.

Lawyer for Patrick Kane accuser: Evidence bag secretly left in door Are you at risk?

By CAROLYN THOMPSON and JOHN WAWROW The Associated Press BUFFALO, N.Y. – A rape investigation involving Chicago Blackhawks star forward Patrick Kane took a bizarre turn Wednesday when the attorney for the accuser said an empty paper bag that once held the woman’s rape kit had been secretly placed in the doorway of her mother’s home.

Kane’s attorney said both sides in the case have been told that none of Kane’s DNA was found “from the waist down” on the woman.

Police officials responded that no packaging is missing from the rape kit.

“Something seriously has gone amiss,” attorney Thomas Eoannou told reporters during a news conference, where he held up the wrinkled brown bag that he said pointed to the possibility of evidence tampering.

He said the woman’s mother discovered the bag Tuesday afternoon when she came home from work for lunch. She found

the bag folded up between a storm door and her front door, he said.

It was the first time Eoannou spoke publicly about the case, a source of intense speculation and rumor since early August, when Kane was accused of assaulting a young woman in his waterfront mansion after they met at a nightclub.

Kane last week said he did nothing wrong and expected to be absolved. He also apologized for the distraction he has caused his family, teammates, the Hawks organization and fans.

Eoannou said the person that left the evidence bag did not knock on the door or ring the doorbell.

“It could have been there a day and a half,” he said, because the woman used the back door when she left for work that morning.

He said the bag is authentic, labeled with personal identifying information for the woman, details on where the rape kit was used and the initials of the nurses who administered

the kit.

“I have never seen an evidence bag outside of a police lab, a prosecutor’s office or a court room, let alone find one in a doorway of a rape victim’s mother’s home,” he said.

“We’re hoping to find out how this happened and who had the incentive to modify or tamper with the evidence,” he said.

Erie County District Attorney Frank Sedita said Eoannou’s claim would be investigated. He declined further comment.

The head of the county agency responsible for maintaining evidence in such cases, meanwhile, said everything given to the agency by the investigating Hamburg Police Department is accounted for.

“This includes the evidence in the rape kit and the packaging itself,” Erie County Commissioner of Central Police Services John Glascott said in a statement. “This evidence has been analyzed and reports of that analysis sent to the appropriate agencies.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Bad influence of Internet and social media

To the Editor: I often have protested the Internet’s and social media’s impact on people’s ability to have rational thought. Preposterous ideas are put out and taken as truthful.

A great example is vaccinations.

A discredited Ph.D. got his research of about a dozen kids printed without peer review. It was picked up and spread through the Internet, affecting the health of thousands of kids. This crazy idea was bought by left- and right-wing nuts in some states and Congress. Size and time have made the “research” factual.

Genetic modified organisms (GMO) have taken on the same power. We are GMO. If you are religious, your God modified us.

If not, then you go further back in

the GMO tree. Almost everything we eat today has been modified by man. Corn is grass modified by Meso-Americans. Same as potatoes and yams. Cow, hogs and poultry are GMO. I am 2 feet taller than I might have been a half-million years ago.

Selective breeding and better nutrients have made us, our meat and our fruits and vegetables the way we are. That’s the old tried-andtrue way, which has not always been good for us – tobacco for one.

Without any facts or research, wacky people put things on social media, and weak-minded people who don’t take the time to factcheck believe them. Check the social media for nutty ideas at www. snopes.com to see if I’m right.

Solidarity and inclusion are a must for Christians A few days ago, I was on a panel at the In Defense of Christians National Leadership Convention on Capitol Hill discussing “Building Bridges between Eastern and Western Christianity.” The first question was about obstacles barring such bridges.

Reflecting on it, I started thinking about Donald Trump (it must have been the cable news in the background) – Donald Trump is the biggest obstacle.

I don’t really mean Trump himself (to his credit, he’s actually talked about the plight of Middle Eastern Christians in a debate). What I mean is our limited attention spans here in the West.

We are so bombarded by so much information. And we’re so easily distracted.

And so there isn’t a lot of room for depth.

And so when the pope talks about hospitality to refugees, there’s a sudden awareness of something deep and powerful

– spurred by an image of the body of a young boy washed up on the shore – but without any context or understanding.

Christians have a responsibility to regard an attack on fellow Christians as an attack on their religion as a whole. We need to be telling more stories, showing more faces, profiling people who are helping.

We all need to encourage and reward good journalism about Christian persecution.

We need to pray together. I should be praying at Maronite churches, and Lebanese Catholics should be getting to know Our Lady of the Americas here in D.C. There needs to be more of a palpable awareness of the diversity in the body of Christ and the reality of the body of Christ. Only then can we support and strengthen one another. Only then can we work together. Only then will we open our hearts and homes.

How many times a day – especially if we live in urban centers, perhaps – do we say “poor guy” and walk away?

The pope went on to say:

“In this world of globalization, we have fallen into a globalization of indifference. We are accustomed to the suffering of others – it doesn’t concern us; it’s none of our business.”

We are all responsible for sins of omission and commission. What are we doing? What are we not doing? If we are not examining our consciences, we are part of the problem.

The biggest obstacle is silence. The greatest barriers are indifference and ignorance.

With Pope Francis in America this week, he gives us the opportunity to reflect on our lives and redeem our politics. The occasion for his visit is the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia, the purpose of which is to help renew family life. Like the Church in Cuba, which he visited first, the domestic church of the family is suffering throughout the world.

It faces a crisis in the West, where people don’t want to get

married and don’t know how to stay married.

Whatever religion you belong to, if any, let Pope Francis remind you of who you are. We are a people with a responsibility to others, and who can juggle more than one issue at once. There’s a resolution in Congress to declare the slaughter of Christians in Iraq and Syria genocide. Urge your representative to take a look at that. And take a look yourself at relief efforts that the likes of the Knights of Columbus and Aid for the Church in Need coordinate and support.

As the Syriac patriarch of Antioch put it in Washington, D.C., a few nights ago: These people feel abandoned.

The pope is visiting America so no one feels abandoned – even the most powerful. We need to know our power.

Thriving University of St. Francis ready for next test against unbeaten Robert Morris

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After claiming wins over Lincoln and Missouri Baptist in its past two games, the University of St. Francis football team is beginning to feel pretty good about where it’s at.

But coach Joe Curry and his Saints know Saturday’s 7 p.m. contest at No. 7 Robert Morris in Arlington Heights will be a good indicator of just how much improvement they’ve made since falling to Saint Xavier, 34-28, in their opener Sept. 5.

A week ago, the Eagles knocked off top-ranked Mar-

ian, 30-21, at home. That followed a win on the road the previous week over a ranked Valley City State squad. This will be the Mid-States Football Association Midwest League opener for Robert Morris, which is off to a 3-0 overall start.

It should be an interesting matchup between an Eagles team ranked 13th in the NAIA in rushing (229.0 yards) and a Saints defense ranked third against the run (66.3 yards).

“Overall, the team looks great,” said senior linebacker Jamal Graham, who had seven tackles, two for losses, last week. “Last year, we didn’t finish games as well. But this

Both of the touchdowns it allowed came when opponents took over inside of the Saints’ 5-yard line on drives.

Since the fourth quarter against Saint Xavier, opponents have had 33 possessions without putting together a touchdown drive of any significant length. That bodes well against an Eagles squad that has scored 23 or more points in each of its three contests.

Five to be inducted into PHS hall Saturday

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Saturday will be a special day in Plainfield for a couple different reasons.

First, it marks the latest chapter of Plainfield Central’s long-running history of playing its homecoming football game on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats’ 1 p.m. game against Minooka will continue a tradition that dates to the early 1950s.

And although it’s a recent addition to the homecoming festivities, the Plainfield High School Athletic Hall of Fame will be celebrating its 17th induction class this weekend.

Bayer, Charles Howell, Jim Kappas and Rachel (Sillar) Swenson are this year’s inductees.

It’s the largest group of individuals to enter the hall of fame since the inaugural class in 1999. The five inductees also equals the number of individuals enshrined in the hall of fame during the past seven years.

The hall of fame, one of the oldest among area schools, now has recognized 24 athletes, eight coaches, an administrator, two fans and seven teams during its 17-year history.

All but Howell are expected to attend Saturday’s events, which kick off with the parade at 9 a.m. and continue at 11:30 a.m., with the alumni tea in the cafeteria. The hall of fame

class also will be honored during halftime of the football game.

Here’s a look at this year’s hall of fame inductees: Justin Arabadjief: The twotime all-state soccer player finished his career with 97 goals, which ranked him among the top 20 players in state history at the time. The 1997 graduate scored 57 goals in his junior and senior years, winning conference MVP honors in 1996.

He accepted a scholarship to play at Bradley University, where he competed for four years.

Gregg Bayer: The three-time state qualifier in tennis won 111 matches, which ranks third in school history. He ended his basketball career

ranked among program’s top20 scorers. The 2003 graduate was conference MVP his senior year and led the basketball team in scoring. After a tennis career at Elmhurst College, he became a District 202 teacher and coach.

Charles Howell: He captured the 2003 Class AA title in the 100-meter dash, becoming the school’s first champion in track and field. He was only the third Wildcat athlete to win a state title in any sport.

The 2003 graduate won a school-record seven medals in the sport over three years.

He was a member of school’s best-finishing relay, which took second in 2001.

Jim Kappas: The 1998 graduate led his wrestling teams to

a 115-39 dual meet record in seven seasons and served as an assistant for four years. He became only the second coach from the school to take two teams to the state quarterfinals, doing so in 2010 and 2014.

His program established new season bests for wins, state qualifiers and placewinners.

Rachel (Sillar) Swenson: She started every game in a fouryear basketball career where she finished as leading scorer with nearly 1,200 points. The 2001 graduate was conference MVP as a senior after leading the 27-4 team to sectional finals. She earned all-state honors in track and field on a relay in 2000. She received four basketball letters at Northern Illinois University.

Offense figured to be a question for the Saints, and that concern grew after Trace Wanless’ injury in the opener.

But the Saints have rushed for more than 200 yards in back-toback games, and ball carriers are gaining an average of 4.6 yards a carry in the past two weeks.

“This offense is very explosive, and we can have drives from one play to 15 or 20 plays,” Butkus said. “With our weapons that we have and the skill players and our O-line, all around we have a solid group.

“We’ve got guys in the backfield like John Magee, and you can always trust the ball in his hands. Then we’ve got guys like J.P. [Jean Pietrzak], who I feel like I can throw to when-

ever I want. And then speedy guys like Sheldon Magee and Dantell Wright, who can hit a hole and score one big anytime that they want. We’re looking forward to playing Robert Morris.”

One of the more interesting stories on the team is sophomore receiver Pietrzak, who also plays on the Saints’ bas-

ketball team. The 6-foot-4 wideout has been a big target for Butkus, catching three touchdowns against SXU and just missing another 100-yard effort last week.

“It’s always tough to start off against such a good team like we did,” Pietrzak said.

“But the tempo every day is to get better so that we play better each week. We did that against Lincoln and then also against Missouri Baptist. Robert Morris will be a good determination of how we’ve progressed over the past three weeks, and it should be a good game.

“Our offense is very versatile with Donny at quarterback, who can throw and run. And we’ve got Dantell and Sheldon, who can run and catch, and John, who can run the ball real well. Brandon Noland and Eli Spann are in the slot, and they’re good at getting to the ball and getting outside. I think we’ll progress each week and be better going into the playoffs.”

5. Lemont (3-1): The Indians, who finished as the state runner-up in Class 6A a year ago, have not hit a consistent groove yet, but they are getting closer. They will be tested Friday night when unbeaten Tinley Park visits.

6. Morris (3-1): Northern Illinois Big 12 East Conference play finally gets underway Friday night as Morris visits Yorkville. The way the conference is shaping up, virtually every game will be a challenge for everyone.

Nazareth, which many considered the No.1 team in the state regardless of class, was leading Marian Central, 19-0, at halftime in last week’s showdown between East Suburban Catholic unbeatens.

A 90-minute lightning delay later, the Hurricanes blew up a storm. They scored five second-half touchdowns and posted a stunning 34-19 victory.

Next up is Friday night’s visit to ATI Field at Joliet Memorial Stadium, where Marian Central coach Mike Maloney’s troops will take on his alma mater, Joliet Catholic, which also is unbeaten at 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the ESCC. “I can imagine,” Maloney said of the Hurricanes making waves around the state with their shocker last week.

“Nobody gave us much of a chance.

But our guys believed in what they do.

They were prepared.”

Sharp, Douglas and McLaughlin still are coaching the Hilltoppers; and Maloney’s former high school teammate, Jake Jaworski, is the JCA defensive coordinator.

“To be able to come to Memorial Stadium and compete against those guys means a lot to me,” Maloney said. “I am excited to have our offense go against my old teammate, Jake Jaworski, who is such a good defensive coordinator.”

Having said that, however, Maloney emphasized Friday night “is all about the players. They know this one means a lot to me. There’s pomp and circumstance because of my roots. My going home adds a little bit extra intensity. But I don’t want to put any undue pressure on the kids. We have to focus and get prepared for the high caliber of team we will be facing.”

If Maloney were not so vitally involved in Friday’s game, from a fan’s perspective, he said he would love to sit back and watch the game.

JCA wingback Michael Johnson is the Joliet area rushing leader with 861 yards in four games, just more than 215 a game and a whopping 11.3 yards a carry. He also has caught nine passes for 284 yards, a 31.6 average, and four of his area-leading 14 touchdowns.

stroyed Nazareth’s defense to the tune of 306 yards in 29 carries and four touchdowns. And J.R. Budmayr is a quality quarterback.

“There’s a little different style between our two teams, and that adds to the appeal,” Maloney said.

“I am surprised – I mean, it’s a positive surprise – that they are throwing the ball downfield very well.

“I am excited to see the diversity in their offense. Our defense is a little undersized; but we’re built on speed, and we have toughness.

Their defense is big up front and at linebacker. They have bunch of those Rudy’s Gym type of guys.

But we like to think we do a lot of things on offense that cause defenses problems.”

Maloney’s team runs spread formations, but the Hurricanes’ bread and butter is the running game.

“We do run some spread sets, but we’re similar to Joliet Catholic,” he said. “Our roots are in the power game, we trap, we run jet sweeps, and they run bucks.

Our offense is very much in the mindset of Gordie Gillespie. You win games off tackle and using misdirection. We want to get our athletes in space.”

Any way you cut it, this game will be special, undoubtedly one of the most anticipated in the state this weekend. If you want to see a Friday night game before the weather cools off, why not make it this one?

8. Providence (1-3): The Celtics earned their first victory last week, winning at Marmion, 14-7. This Friday night, St. Rita, which also is 1-3 and in dire need of a victory, visits Providence.

9. Minooka (3-1): The Indians picked a bad time to not play well as they fell last week at Oswego, 42-7. They will attempt to get back on track Saturday when they visit Plainfield Central in the Wildcats’ homecoming game.

10. Plainfield South (2-2): Even though Joliet West beat the Cougars, 21-6, in Week 2 and also is 2-2, the defensive-minded Cougars have won two straight Southwest Prairie Conference games, including last week’s huge 6-3 victory over Plainfield North, and thus are bumping the Tigers from the top 10.

SMALL SCHOOLS

1. Wilmington (4-0): Two weeks ago, the Wildcats beat Lisle, 21-7. Last week, Westmont lost to Lisle, 43-0. Comparing scores can be misleading, but defending Class 3A state champion Wilmington should make it five straight Friday night when Westmont visits.

2. Coal City (2-2): There are a couple of very strong teams in the Interstate Eight Large, and the Coalers felt the wrath of one of them last week.

3. Peotone (2-2): The Blue Devils returned to the .500 mark with last week’s 17-7 victory over Sandwich.

The Associated Press NEW YORK – The lovable legend of Yogi Berra, that ain’t ever gonna be over.

The Hall of Fame catcher renowned as much for his linguistically dizzying “Yogi-isms” as his unmatched 10 World Series championships with the New York Yankees, Yogi Berra died Tuesday. in 2010 He was 90.

Berra, who filled baseball’s record book as well as “Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations,” died of natural causes at his home in New Jersey, according to Dave Kaplan, the director of the Yogi Berra Museum.

Berra played in more World Series games than any other major leaguer and was a threetime American League Most Valuable Player.

For many, however, he was even better known for all those amusing axioms.

“It ain’t over ’til it’s over” is among eight of them included in Bartlett’s.

“When I’m sittin’ down to dinner with the family, stuff just pops out. And they’ll say, ‘Dad, you just said another one.’ And I don’t even know what the heck I said,” Berra insisted.

Short, squat and with a

homely mug, Berra was a Yankees great who helped the team reach 14 World Series during his 18 seasons in the Bronx.

“While we mourn the loss of our father, grandfather and great-grandfather, we know he is at peace with Mom,” Berra’s family said in a statement released by the museum. “We celebrate his remarkable life, and are thankful he meant Yogi Berra so much to so in 1973 many. He will truly be missed.”

Berra served on a gunboat supporting the D-Day invasion in 1944 and played for the Yankees from 1946 to 1963. His teammates included fellow Hall of Famers Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, Whitey Ford and Phil Rizzuto.

“No! Say it ain’t so. He was a good man, my former manager and friend! RIP Yogi,” former Yankees star Dave Winfield tweeted.

Lawrence Peter Berra, the son of Italian immigrants, got his nickname while growing up in St. Louis. Among his amateur baseball teammates was Jack McGuire, another future big leaguer.

“Some of us went to a movie with a yogi in it, and afterwards Jack began calling me Yogi. It stuck,” Berra told the Saturday Evening Post.

He was a fan favorite, espe-

cially with children, and the cartoon character Yogi Bear was named after him.

Until recent years, he remained a fixture at Yankee Stadium and in the clubhouse, where the likes of Derek Jeter, Joe Torre and others in pinstripes looked up to the diminutive old-timer.

In 1956, Berra caught the only perfect game in World Series history and after the last out leaped into pitcher Don Larsen’s arms. The famous moment is still often replayed on baseball broadcasts.

After his playing days, Berra coached or managed the Yankees, New York Mets and Houston Astros. He led both the Yankees and Mets to pennants.

In 1985, his firing as manager by the Yankees 16 games into the season sparked a feud with George Steinbrenner.

Berra vowed never to return to Yankee Stadium as long as Steinbrenner owned the team.

But in 1999, Berra finally relented, throwing out the ceremonial first pitch of the Yankees’ season-opener.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of a Yankees legend and American hero, Yogi Berra,” the Yankees posted on Twitter.

Berra, who played in 15 straight All-Star Games, never earned more than $65,000 a season. He died on the same date, Sept. 22, as his big league debut 69 years earlier.

CHICAGO – Zach Davies allowed two hits over six innings and Martin Maldonado drove in two runs to lead Milwaukee to a 4-1 victory over the Cubs on Wednesday night, snapping the Brewers’ nine-game losing streak to the Cubs.

Jorge Soler homered for the Cubs, who lost for the second time in nine games and finished with three hits total.

Davies (2-2) allowed two singles in the second inning, walked one and struck out four.

Francisco Rodriguez

pitched the ninth and picked up his 35th save in 37 opportunities.

Luis Sardinas gave the Brewers a 1-0 lead with an RBI single just out of the reach of a diving Kris Bryant at third base.

The Brewers took a 3-0 lead in the seventh when Khris Davis followed Adam Lind’s double with an RBI single. Two walks by reliever Justin Grimm loaded the bases and Maldonado hit a sacrifice fly.

TIGERS 7, SOX 4 Montas struggles in first Sox start The ASSOCIATED PRESS DETROIT – The first time wasn’t a charm for Frankie Montas, but the White Sox right-hander had fun all the same.

And managed to throw some impressive pitches, too.

Making his first major league start, Montas allowed six runs on six hits in a 7-4 loss Wednesday to the Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.

“Things didn’t go like I wanted,” Montas said. “But even though I didn’t get the win, I actually enjoyed it.”

Montas gave up a two-run home run to Victor Martinez in the first inning, the 200th of Martinez’s career. J.D. Martinez’s two-run double was the biggest hit of the Tigers’ fourrun third.

Sox catcher Geovany Soto liked what he saw from Montas, however.

“I feel like he has great stuff,” Soto said. “The kid throws very firm. He’s got a great two-seamer, changeup’s a work in progress, but the slider is a good pitch for him.

“He made a few mistakes, but he’s really a promising young man.”

Joliet man uses his personal journey to write about the Christian experience Know more

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Ricky Tutor said he was a trouble-making teen, one who brought marijuana to Sunday school to show the other kids.

Tutor, now 51, of Joliet, certainly knew better.

“I was brought up in the church,” Tutor said. “I was taught that God is real, the Bible is true, that there is a heaven and hell. But I didn’t take God very seriously.”

It’s been a decades-long process to build that personal relationship with God – starting in 1980 and continuing to the present – and it’s one Tutor outlines in his third book, “The God Journey.”

Once Tutor crossed over to what he called “the God side,” he couldn’t switch off the passion. He recalled grabbing pen and paper one night at age 16 and sitting down at the kitchen table with his Bible just as his father was preparing for bed.

“When he got up the next morning to go to work, he was surprised to find me still sitting there,” Tutor said.

Tutor said he would shut himself in his room for many hours to pray and study. At 17, a quiet, godly woman from his church prayed over him and said God was going to use him.

A second woman at a later date said the same thing. Even later, a speaker at his church echoed those sentiments.

However, the three people never specified details, Tutor said.

As time passed, Tutor realized he was meant to tell his story. So, in 2007, Tutor wrote it down – longhand – because he didn’t own a typewriter or computer. Tutor planned to ask the church secretary to type and staple it, so he could distribute it to anyone willing to read it.

But the few pages became a dozen chapters, Tutor said.

Ricky Tutor of Joliet recently released his third book on spiritual growth and enlightenment, “The God Journey.”

One-on-one distribution no longer was practical. So Tutor said he published “What It’s About” with the Christian self-publishing company

Brentwood Christian Press.

As Tutor developed skill in writing and organizing his thoughts, he rewrote his testimony. That became

“Doing the Will of the Father,” which Tutor published with the self-publishing company Xlibris in 2009.

Still, Tutor wasn’t satisfied.

He reworked the story again.

Tutor added the evidence he feels proves God’s existence.

He wrote about God’s forgiveness and shared the salvation stories of others.

In this third book, Tutor also discussed how to have a personal relationship with God, how people choose their destinies and how everyone can be ready for that destiny at the end of his or her life.

Tutor recalled the day that truth leaped out at him, when he still was a teen.

“I remember thinking that if I got into a fight and someone pulled a gun out on me, I was going to hell,” Tutor said.

The Rev. Raymond Quintana, pastor of Word of Life Christian Center in Crest Hill, where Tutor attends church, said he read the “The God Journey” while traveling on a plane and thoroughly enjoyed it.

“I couldn’t put it down,” Quintana said. “As a pastor, I read a lot of books from famous Christian authors and pastors, and he did a great job.”

Quintana praised Tutor’s message – that we all are on a journey and that God can take anyone past their history and make good come out of it.

“It’s an encouraging book,” Quintana said.

The award was established in 1982 as a living memorial honoring the late Bishop Romeo Blanchette. In the past 32 years, $387,150 has been awarded to 189 students. It is funded by donations to the BBS Fund.

Bridge can be tough, and if you have the ability to enjoy it anyway, you will find the game very rewarding.

Some deals are tougher than others. This one is well up the scale. You are West. You lead a trump against four hearts. When that dummy appears, how would you hope to collect four tricks?

North’s three-heart response was a game-invitational limit raise.

Duplicate players these days (sensibly) treat a jump raise in competition as pre-emptive: four-card support but a weak hand.

With at least game-invitational values, they cue-bid the overcaller’s suit; here, bidding two spades.

Count the points. Dummy has 11, you have 13, and declarer had enough to go to game. Clearly, your partner, East, has few values. He cannot hold the spade king or club ace, unless South has taken a gamble.

So, you should hope to take these four tricks: two spades, one diamond and one club. But to get those spade winners, you might need partner to lead the suit through declarer.

South draws trumps and plays a diamond. Rise with your ace and exit safely with a diamond.

Declarer will take his tricks there and play a club to his ace. You must be ready – sacrifice the king under the ace. Then East will get in for the lethal spade shift.

Keep the club king in your hand and you will be endplayed, forced to lead a spade or concede a ruff-and-sluff.

Dear Dr. K: I’ve read about the health benefits of spices that most of us have in our kitchen cabinets. Is there anything to this?

Dear Reader: I’ll bet you’ve been seasoning your food for years, using herbs and spices to add freshness and depth to your dishes. Researchers have begun to investigate the effects of these flavor enhancers on health. It turns out that herbs and spices may do much more than make your food more inviting.

Spices and herbs contain concentrated amounts of phytochemicals, plant chemicals that help combat disease.

These nutrients are antimicrobial, which means they protect the body from bacteria and food-borne illnesses. Below are some of the latest research findings: • When meats such as beef, pork or chicken are exposed to high heat from grilling or frying, carcinogens called HCAs form. Adding rosemary to ground beef may help prevent the formation of HCAs. • There are many studies of cinnamon, but they unfortunately come to different conclusions.

Some find that cinnamon lowers levels of blood sugar and cholesterol, but others do not. I think the jury is still out on cinnamon. (When it comes in with a verdict, I’ll let you know.)

• A small but well-designed study looked at the effect of saffron on menstrual symptoms. It found that 75 percent of women with menstrual symptoms who took 30 milligrams of saffron daily reported that mood swings and depression declined by at least half, compared with only 8 percent of women who didn’t take saffron.

Dear Abby: Your advice to “Poor Birth Mother in Georgia” on June 12 -- “Because the college loan agreement with your daughter was verbal and wasn’t put in writing, you don’t have a legal means to force her to assume the loan payments” – was wrong!

Verbal agreements are enforced if they can be proven to be true. Even if the daughter didn’t promise to make the payments, she may be held liable for them because money provided for the benefit of another gives rise to an implied and enforceable obligation to repay it.

If the statute of limitations has not run out, I think she’s got a pretty good case. Whether it’s economically feasible is another issue, as is the wisdom of getting into litigation with one’s daughter.

Check with your own attorney. You made a mistake that you should correct.
