JOLIET – Three men were shot Monday night while sitting in a car in the Fairview Homes housing project in Joliet.

The shooting was at least the third in a month at Fairview Homes and happened just a few hours after a community meeting in which police met with neighbors about the outbreak of violence at the housing complex.

Joliet Police Lt. Kevin LaBolle said authorities were called at 10:50 p.m. when gunfire was reported near Cardinal Lane and Fairmont Avenue.

No victims were at the scene, but a short time later, three men drove themselves to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center and said they’d been parked in the area when they were attacked, LaBolle said.

A 38-year-old man and a 34-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds to their backs, and a 33-year-old man was shot in the leg. Their vehicle also was struck several times, according

to reports.

No suspect information was available Tuesday.

Two fatal Fairview shootings occurred Aug. 23 and Sept.

13. One arrest has been made.

Monday’s shootings happened shortly after a community meeting was held to discuss ways to fight crime in the Forest Park neighborhood.

“It’s disheartening, but we have work to do,” said Garland Mays, president of the Forest Park Neighborhood Council, which held the meeting. “It’s got to stop.”

Mays said he intends to talk with the mayor and police chief to insist on a plan to deal with the outbreak of shootings at Fairview. He said members of the Neighborhood Council also plan to go to Fairview themselves to find out the source of the crime.

“We want to target the problem and go to them,” he said.

“We’re not going to continue to tolerate this.”

Police at the community meeting Monday said Forest Park has had more than 30 violent crimes in each of the past

three years, including incidents at Fairview.

Mays said crimes have been dispersed throughout the neighborhood and police have focused efforts in certain areas. The recent outbreak of violence at Fairview, however, has made matters worse, and people want something done, he said.

During the community meeting, police said they have stepped up patrols in the area around Fairview, especially during weekends, to increase police visibility. Police also said they are watching for people who have been banned from Fairview by the Housing Authority of Joliet in order to remove them from the property.

While it has been generally believed that people involved in the shootings do not live in Fairview, police said Tuesday some victims and suspects are from the housing complex or the surrounding area.

“The people we suspect live up there,” said Sgt. Christopher Moore, with the Gang Intelligence Unit. “They live in the projects or right around the

Michael Simelton, chief executive officer for the Housing Authority of Joliet, told neighbors of the public housing complex that the authority will begin focusing its attention on taking the steps needed to demolish it.

His comments were met with some quiet applause Monday night at a community meeting in Forest Park, the neighborhood where Fairview is located. The Forest Park Neighborhood Council was meeting with police to discuss an outbreak of violence at Fairview in recent weeks. A few hours after the meeting, three people were shot at Fairview.

Simelton said the Housing Authority has support from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development

to tear down Fairview and build elsewhere.

“The people who fund the Housing Authority, they’re all for taking that building down,” he said. “It’s not a desirable site that is conducive to family living. We need to take it down and redevelop another site – maybe even outside Joliet.”

Simelton said the Fairview site lacks certain amenities, with public transportation being a major one, and getting funding to redevelop at that location would be difficult.

The process to get demolition approval could take two years, Simelton said.

Fairview would be the last of three public housing apartment complexes to be torn down by the Housing Authority.

Poole Gardens was demolished in 2007 and replaced with Liberty Meadow Estates, a subsidized mixed-income subdivision.

The Housing Authority re-

cently received approval to demolish Des Plaines Gardens, which will happen by March, and redevelop with Water’s Edge, also a subsidized mixed-income subdivision with townhomes and single-family houses.

With the Des Plaines Gardens project underway, the demolition of Fairview “becomes our priority,” Simelton said.

In the meantime, some Forest Park and Fairview residents are looking to build bridges between the two communities to deal with the crime problem.

Joliet Councilwoman Bettye Gavin said she tried to encourage Fairview residents to come to the meeting Monday, but only a few did.

“You can tell they are extremely familiar with the area because of where the incidents are happening,” Moore said.

Police and the Housing Authority have been discussing additional security cameras at Fairview to capture areas now being missed.

Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said in addition to dedicating more squad cars to the Fairview area, bicycle patrols will start.

“In the black-and-white squad cars, they recognize us before we recognize them,” Gregory said. “On the bicycles, they don’t really know it’s a police officer until we are right on them.”

Bengtson’s, Siegel’s fests move on despite unspectacular pumpkin yield If you go

Pumpkin yield may not be spectacular this year – thanks to the unusual summer weather – but two major pumpkin farms in Will County still are preparing for their annual pumpkin festivals.

Both Bengtson’s Pumpkin Farm in Homer Glen and Siegel’s Cottonwood Farm in Crest Hill are kicking off their festivals Saturday, continuing family traditions that span decades.

“We just do this to help families continue the tradition,” said Jeremy Bengtson, who helps run Bengtson’s Pumpkin Farm. “There are a few people out there who maybe came when they were 12 years old and now they’re bringing their kids.”

Wet and cold

Pumpkins are a staple of Will County: Typically more than 90 percent of processed pumpkins in the country are grown in Illinois, according to data from the University of Illinois Extension. Will County is rated a top-five pumpkin producing county in the state.

But because of the wet weather and late onset of summer heat, pumpkins are arriving late, said James Theuri, a local food systems and small farms educator at University of Illinois Extension.

“This year has been weird,” Theuri said. “It’s been the coldest and wettest for the longest time.”

Theuri, who said the pumpkin yield is expected to be average this year, explained optimal growing conditions require proper water, warmth, soil conditions and lack of soil competition and insect or disease damage.

However, the summer has been uncharacteristically cool. The mean temperature in August was 1.9 degrees cooler than last year, according to National Weather Service data

Theuri said this slowed the development of growth, as pumpkins grown in the area didn’t accumulate enough “growing degree days,” a unit of heat measurement that compares daily maximum and minimum temperatures to a base temperature for pumpkin development.

“We’ll always have plenty, we always do,” Bengtson said.

“But it’s a pretty rough year for pumpkins.”

Bengtson said the wet ground leads to quicker pumpkin rot and a thriving fungal infection that takes out a significant portion of crops.

Kaity Siegel, owner of Siegel’s Cottonwood Farm, said the wet weather has led to delayed pumpkin maturation.

“Pumpkin farming is very weather sensitive,” Siegel said. “The rainy weather flooded the pumpkin fields and it retained more water.”

Theuri said the water saturation in the soil doesn’t allow oxygen to the roots of the

pumpkin crop.

But he said as the weather gets colder this time of year, it signals the pumpkins to stop feeding and start seeding.

“At least, as long as it doesn’t warm up again,” he said.

Pumpkin fests

Siegel’s Cottonwood Farm is celebrating 25 years of its Pumpkin Fest by kicking off with a salute to the military.

Saturday and Sunday is Military Appreciation Weekend, with free general admission for military personnel and immediate family, and special guest appearances by characters from the movie “Frozen” on Saturday and movie guide Svengoolie on Sunday.

The Pumpkin Fest, located on the farm at 17250 Weber Road in Crest Hill, contains more than 30 attractions, including cornfield mazes, hayrack rides, zombie paintball and animatronics.

This year, the farm is adding a special zone appealing to

dads.

“The [Bug’s Barnyard] Ball Zone is one of our new attractions,” Siegel said. “We decided to add something that dads can do with the kids.”

The farm also added a 5-in-1 fairyland inflatable attraction, and has turned what used to be the “Fort Cottonwood” theme into “Port Cottonwood.”

During Bengtson’s Pumpkin Farm’s 2015 Pumpkin Fest at 13341 W. 151st St. in Homer Glen, camel and pony rides, a kid’s village, a pumpkin chucker cannon, pig races and several amusement rides are a few of the fall attractions.

The farm has added a gemstone and arrowhead mining sluice to the event.

“Kids can purchase different size bags and hit pay dirt,” Bengtson said. “It’s the same dirt that comes out of mines.

They can use a sluice under water to mine for gems or arrowheads.”

Both pumpkin fests will be open every day from Saturday to Nov. 1. Siegel’s will be

Heroin abuse: Open up the conversation

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – When Tom Moore’s 17-year-old son died from drug-induced heart arrhythmia in March 2014, one of the first things the New Lenox father did was visit his daughter’s Will County jail cell – where she faced possession charges – to give her the news.

“My daughter has been in recovery ever since,” Moore told a crowd of about 75 people attending the Heroin Symposium Tuesday night at Lincoln-Way West High School in New Lenox. “I stand here and tell you that there is hope.

People can and do recover.”

In the audience in the second and third rows of the auditorium sat four generations of Moore’s family – his support system, he said – including his 19-year-old daughter, Aly Moore, who is approaching 19 months sober.

Tuesday’s event marked a milestone for Moore, who said

it was his first time speaking to a large crowd about his son’s death and his daughter’s ongoing recovery. He asked parents, family members and friends in the audience to “open up the conversation” about heroin and drug abuse.

It’s the only way to bring the issue out of the darkness and into the light, he said.

The symposium event – hosted by law enforcement officials from New Lenox, Frankfort and Mokena – concentrated on the dangers of heroin addiction and other drug abuse issues. The Lincoln-Way West symposium comes on the heels of several similar events held during the past year or so in response to the growing heroin epidemic in Will County.

Heroin overdoses were rare in Will County before 1999, but the Will County Coroner’s Office soon began reporting an increase in heroin overdose deaths year after year, from 17 cases in 2008 to 29 in 2009. In 2012, the number

Will County residents urged to register to vote

“Unfortunately, two people [registered] so far today,” Wiedmeyer said after 1 p.m.

Residents may register online, in person at the local election authority office or at driver’s license facilities, with deputy registrars who are appointed in each jurisdiction,

or via mail using the Illinois Voter Registration Application available in English and Spanish, according to the Illinois State Board of Elections.

Wiedmeyer said she encourages voters to register well ahead of Election Day. With several options available, there’s no reason to wait until the last minute, she said.

In the upcoming election, seats for Will County Board districts 1, 4, 6 and 7 are up for two-year terms. County Board districts 3, 8, 10, 12 and 13 have four-year term seats up for election. Committeemen positions for the 303 precincts in the county are up, as are the countywide offices of circuit clerk, recorder of deeds, state’s attorney, auditor, coroner and county executive.

As of Tuesday, 386,609 people were registered to vote in Will County.

Plainfield trustees approve Happy Hour, salon liquor sales

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – “Happy Hour” is back in Plainfield after trustees approved an ordinance that brings the village in line with recent changes in state law.

Bars and restaurants will be permitted to discount liquor up to four hours a day and 15 hours a week.

“We were simply trying to conform our ordinance to allow our licensees to have that practice,” said Joan Meyers, Plainfield police legal counsel.

In July, Gov. Bruce Rauner signed a bill allowing the return of happy hour alcoholic specials. The popular discount period had been banned since 1989.

The Plainfield ordinance allows the discounting of drinks with several stipulations.

The price of the drink can’t change during the discounted time period. Discounting can’t occur between 10 p.m. and the establishment’s closing hour.

And the time of the happy hour must be displayed on-site or on the establishment’s website for public view at least seven days in advance.

“It does allow somewhat of a traditional happy hour-type environment, but not a two-forone,” Meyers said in response to concerns Trustee Jim Racich had about the slashing of drink prices in half.

Racich was the lone dissenting vote in the 5-1 vote. He also voted against an ordinance to allow salons to sell wine or beer to customers.

After passing with a 5-1 vote, full-service, non-home based salons will be allowed, with a license, to sell a maximum of two glasses of wine or beer to customers per 24-hour period.

“What I question is the need to sell alcohol, wine or beer at a salon,” Racich said. “In my estimation, the same parallel could be used to sell them at a hardware store.”

Colleen Almodovar, the owner of Evan Michaels Nails and Spa, said she has been los-

ing business to neighboring Shorewood in the form of bridal showers and other groups of people who want a glass of wine or beer as they get ready for their big events.

Shorewood two years ago created a liquor license class that allows alcohol to be served in salons.

Mayor Michael Collins acknowledged that some salons in the village have been illegally serving alcohol and have been told to stop the practice.

Approved at the Village Board meeting was a site plan and final plat for NAPA Auto Parts store in a Meijer outlot near Route 59 and 135th Street.

Trustees also approved the annexation of the Boulevard property at the northwest corner of Route 30 and Interstate 55. The land is expected to be the site of a future Costco, a topic discussed but dodged by village officials during a Sept.

LOCAL BRIEFS New trustee appointed to Frankfort board

FRANKFORT – Keith Ogle was appointed Monday to the vacant Frankfort village trustee position.

Ogle, who has been the Frankfort village clerk since 2013, resigned from that post and took his new oath of office from Mayor Jim Holland at Monday’s board meeting. Ogle will serve as trustee until the term expires in 2017, according to a news release from the village.

Ogle is president of Plus One Audio Video, a Frankfort business.

He has been president of the Frankfort Public Library District since 2011, and has served as a library trustee since 2009, according to the news release.

He has served on the village’s Department of Operations Committee since 2008 and has been president of the Frankfort Chamber of Commerce.

Eight people applied for the vacancy, according to the news

release.

State law calls for the mayor to appoint a new village clerk with the advice and consent of the trustees. Those interested in applying for the clerk’s appointment can get an application from the Village Administration Building, 432 W. Nebraska St., or at www. villageoffrankfort.com.

Applications are due by Oct. 13 to Debbie Cox at the Village Administration Building. Holland expects to announce an appointment by Nov. 16.

Brandon Road bridge repairs to start in October

JOLIET – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that the Brandon Road bridge over the Des Plaines River, in Joliet, will be closed to perform scheduled electrical repairs, weather permitting, beginning Oct. 12.

a detour will be posted. Northbound traffic will detour east on Laraway Road, north on Illinois 53, west on McDonough Street and southwest on Route 6 to Brandon Road. Southbound traffic will follow the reverse route.

Marine traffic will not be affected by the closure.

The project will be complete by Oct. 16.

The Jefferson Street bridge will remained closed during work on the Brandon Road bridge, an IDOT spokesman said. The Jefferson Street bridge closed in July to be repainted and is scheduled to reopen in late October.

Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area when the Brandon Road bridge is closed.

Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on alert for workers and equipment.

CHANNAHON – Channahon’s village president said she intends to start a program that will teach youth the importance of civic responsibility.

During Monday’s Village Board meeting, Village President Missey Schumacher proclaimed this week as Constitution Week in Channahon in honor of the 228th anniversary of the drafting of the Constitution of the United States of America.

After the meeting, Schumacher said it was important for her to teach youth about how vital civic responsibility is important to her, and she wants students to learn more about

how their local government works by starting a program that allows them to serve as trustees for a day.

Although the program still is in its conceptual stage, Schumacher said the students might shadow a village staff member during an afternoon, then sit at the Village Board dais and issue their own proclamations at an evening board meeting.

She also plans to start a program for local student art to be displayed at Village Hall, and she will visit elementary classrooms and read to students.

“I want to start including kids and involve them in local government and civic responsibility,” she said.

Also at the meeting, trustee Scott Slocum said letters

are going out to four village business owners who have lighting in the windows of their commercial properties that is too bright or in other ways does not conform to village code.

Channahon is very pro-business, Slocum said after the meeting, but its sign ordinances are specific and are there for a reason.

“They are really bright LED lights in the windows of the businesses,” he said, “and they are too bright. They take away from other businesses, and they don’t fit the character of our architecture.”

Slocum said the village will post the relevant ordinances on its website.

Channahon aims to teach civic responsibility

JOLIET – A Lansing man who robbed his former roommates was sentenced Tuesday to five years in prison.

Jordan A. Dingillo, 24, pleaded guilty to one count of robbery in exchange for having other felony charges dismissed. On Jordan A. Oct. 6, 2014, DinDingillo gillo and others forced their way into the house in Joliet where he used to live and demanded money from the man and woman living there, Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Chris Regis said.

According to court documents, Dingillo used a blunt metal object, believed to be an aluminum baseball bat, to threaten the victims.

The Department of Corrections reports Dingillo has been on parole for driving on a suspended license in DuPage County since July 2014.

Man arrested in connection with fire

JOLIET – A man who authorities allege fled to Florida after trying to burn down a Joliet Township apartment building has been arrested.

Denzil A. Lawrence, 38, of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, was brought to the Will County Jail Tuesday morning and is being held on $500,000 bond on charges of possession of

explosives and vandalism.

On the morning of June 5, firefighters were called to an Denzil A. 11-unit complex Lawrence in the 400 block of Siegmund Street where smoke was showing from a second-floor apartment, according to reports.

East Joliet Fire Chief Robert Scholtes said firefighters who extinguished the fire found a suspicious package and called the Cook County Bomb Squad.

Inspections showed the building’s fire suppression system had been tampered with.

Will County Sheriff’s Investigations Deputy Chief Rick Ackerson said Tuesday a warrant was issued for Lawrence’s arrest on June 5, but the military veteran fled the state and was not located until recently.

Man charged with beating woman

MOKENA – Authorities said a couple’s argument turned violent last week while they were

living in a forest preserve.

Will County Forest Preserve Police Sgt. Reggie McCrary said Robert M. a woman told Jaskierney Mokena police Friday she’d been attacked Tuesday at their campsite in the Hickory Creek Forest Preserve, a 1,541-acre preserve accessible from LaPorte Road.

Mokena police notified the forest preserve police.

“They are homeless and have been living in the preserve, which is not allowed,” McCrary said. “But we did investigate the battery.”

Robert M. Jaskierney, 32, was located and arrested Saturday.

He was booked into the Will County Jail on a charge of aggravated domestic battery and two counts of violating bail bond conditions. He is being held on $350,000 bond.

According to jail records, Jaskierney was arrested in April

by Joliet police on a charge of domestic battery.

PLAINFIELD – A four-vehicle crash Tuesday evening in Plainfield hospitalized two people and caused severe backups as southbound Route 59 rush hour traffic was rerouted.

The crash occurred at 5:15 p.m. just south of the intersection of Route 59 and Fort Beggs Drive.

Two female passengers from separate vehicles were transported by ambulance to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet after being treated on the scene, Fire Battalion Chief Scott Moore said. Six other passengers from the vehicles refused hospital

transport.

The crash involved a line of three sedans and an SUV, each with extensive front-end damage. One sedan was wedged underneath the rear of the SUV, picking it up off the ground.

Moore said it’s possible another vehicle also was involved.

Moore said extrication wasn’t needed from any of the vehicles.

The crash caused southbound traffic on Route 59 to arrive at a standstill into downtown Plainfield. Southbound traffic was rerouted through Fort Beggs Drive and southwest on River Road to Renwick Road.

Lewis University receives $1.44 million STEM grant

ROMEOVILLE – U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski announced late Tuesday afternoon the National Science Foundation has awarded Lewis University in Romeoville a $1.44 million grant for a program designed to address a fundamental challenge facing science, technology, engineering and math education.

The program, titled “Using Reality-Based Learning Practicum and Mentoring Structures to Enhance STEM Teacher Preparation for High Need Schools,” will recruit undergraduate majors in biology, chemistry, math and

physics and prepare them to become sixth through 12th grade math or science teachers. The program will fund 36 scholarships over five years.

Lewis University will collaborate with Joliet Junior College, the College of DuPage, Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie, Three Rivers Manufacturers Association, Valley View Public School District 365U, Joliet District 86 and Oak Lawn District 218, according to a news release from Lipinski.

The NSF grant award will start Oct. 1.

PAUL COSTION LEONARD J. CERNETICH Leonard Joseph Cernetich “Lenny,” age 68, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, September 20, 2015, with his loving family by his side.

Leonard is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Frances (nee Affrunti); son, Lenny (Jackie) Cernetich; daughter, Janet Cernetich; three sisters, Kathy Cernetich, Karen Cernetich and Patty (Tom) Banas; four step-children, Jannette (Jim) Boucher, Susan (Dale) Thomas, Danny (fiancee Ester) Wyatt, and Debby Wyatt; 6 grandchildren, 9 step-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, sisters and brothers-in-law and his two loyal companions, Buster and Bailey.

Preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Rita (nee Rosetto) Cernetich; and one son, Jerry Cernetich.

Lenny was a retired member of the Teamsters Local #179. He also worked part time for Artistic Dental.

He enjoyed golfing, euchre and was an excellent karaoke singer. Lenny will be missed by all who knew him.

Paul Costion, age 55, of Joliet, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends.

Born December 10, 1959, in DuBois, PA, he was the son of the late John Francis and Stella Ann (nee Rusonis) Costion.

A graduate of Brockway Area High School, Class of 1977, and attended Joliet Junior College. He worked for ExxonMobil for over 20 years most recently as a rotating equipment engineer. Paul was an avid hunter who enjoyed salmon fishing, puttering in his man cave, raising bees and eating blueberry pancakes. He was always going from sunrise to sunset and enjoyed helping people with electric or mechanical projects. He was a member of the NRA, Bee Club, Moose Lodge, Knights of Columbus and St. Bernard Catholic Church.

Surviving are his beloved wife, Patricia (nee Brady) Costion; three sons, Jon (Mayra), Ryan and Marc Costion; siblings, Michael (Gerda), Kathleen (late David) Bearbower, Jo Ann (late Michael) Marchiori, Mary Ann (late Charles) Nicometo and his twin, Pamela Moore; two stepsons, Michael and Kyle Easter; a special family friend, Rachel Kaniewski; one niece, Hope (Steve) Klucovich; three nephews, John (Roberta) Costion, Dan (Alisa) Costion and Alan (Marian) Marchiori; and several great-nieces and great-nephews also survive.

Glen “Bud” Dennis Kelly Jr., age 79, who was born and raised in Joliet, Illinois and lived in Honolulu, Hawaii for the last 20 years, passed away on August 5, 2015, in Honolulu. He attended the University of Notre Dame and was a lifelong fan.

Glen was an engineer and superintendant of roadways for the City of Joliet.

Shawn L. Capodice (nee Bundy) “Shawnee” “Mrs. Cap,” age 48. Passed away peacefully Monday, September 21, 2015, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice home with her family by her side following a courageous battle with a very rare form of cancer.

Born in Charleston, IL, raised in Frankfort, IL and a Minooka resident for the past 23 years. A graduate of Lincolnway High School, Class of 1985 and the University of St. Francis, attaining a master’s degree in Administration and bachelor’s degree in Mathematics. “Mrs. Cap” was the Instructional Leader (department head) of the Math Department at Minooka Community High School with 21 years of dedicated service, right up until her illness prevented her from going back to work “just one more day”. Math may have been her career, but the young men, women and staff of Minooka Community High School were her passion.

Preceded by paternal grandparents, Floyd and Pearl (nee Cunningham) Bundy; maternal grandfather, Harold “Doc” Miller; and her fatherin-law, John J. MARGARET R. MANTOVANI Margaret R. Mantovani (nee Sarnicki), age 91. Passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2015, at Vitas Hospice at Franciscan St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights.

Preceded in death by her loving husband of 58 years, Aloysius F. “Lou” Mantovani; her parents, Thomas and Anna (nee Macko) Sarnicki; one sister, Ann Hunch; brothers, Thomas and John Sarnicki and an infant brother Michael.

Marge was born in 1924, in Joliet and a life-long resident. She graduated from Joliet Township High School and for over sixty years remained close with JTHS friends including Eleanor, Cecilia, Jean, Julie, Phyllis, Delores and Helen. She was a former of SS Cyril and Methodius Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Joliet and a current member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Member of the “over 55 club” of St. Patrick’s Church and member of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association.

In later life, she enjoyed participating with friends in senior bowling leagues in Joliet and traveling with Lou, especially to Italy, Paris, Prague and Slovakia where she visited her Slovak relatives. Margaret was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

Survived by her four sons, Robert (Barbara), James, David (Lina) and Paul (Deborah) Mantovani; her grandchildren, Kevin (Jana), Joel (Heather), Brian (Brandie), Ignacio (Rhea), Victor (Marcela), Viviana, Jessica and Jacob; ten great-grandchil-

dren; one brother, George Sarnicki and one sister, Agnes Volk-Opila; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Marge was very grateful to the loving care provided over the past seven years by all of her care givers and especially her “angels” Mattie and Leah, who provided her with great support and friendship.

A celebration of the life of Margaret R. Mantovani will be held at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home 2320 Black Road in Joliet on Friday, September 25, 2015, from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. A funeral procession will then proceed to St. Patrick’s Catholic Church for a funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery Mausoleum in Romeoville.

She retired from Western Electric (AT&T) plant in Montgomery, IL. She was a long time member of the Millbrook Methodist Church in Millbrook, IL. Vivian loved gardening and spending time camping and being outdoors. She loved playing Bingo, especially at the Senior Service Center in Yorkville.

She was also an avid NASCAR fan and enjoyed going to and watching races on TV. Preceded in death by her first husband, J.D. Hively; second husband, Kenneth W. Reader.

By NICOLE WINFIELD and RACHEL ZOLL The Associated Press WASHINGTON – The pope of the poor arrived for his first-ever visit to the world’s wealthiest superpower Tuesday denying he is a leftist and riding in a frugal little family car, windows rolled down.

Pope Francis’ chartered plane from Cuba touched down at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, where President Barack Obama and his wife and daughters paid him the rare honor of meeting him at the bottom of the stairs on the red-carpeted tarmac. Presidents usual-

ly make important visitors come to them at the White House.

Emerging from the aircraft to loud cheers from a crowd of hundreds, the smiling 78-year-old pontiff removed his skullcap in the windy weather and made his way down the steps in his white robes.

He was welcomed by a military honor guard, chanting schoolchildren, politicians, and Roman Catholic clerics in black robes with vivid sashes of scarlet and purple.

Joe Biden, the nation’s first Catholic vice president, and his wife were among those who greeted him.

Eschewing a limousine, the pope climbed into the back of a little Fiat sandwiched between huge black SUVs. He promptly rolled down the windows, enabling the cheering, whooping crowds to see him as his motorcade took him to the Vatican diplomatic mission in Washington, where he will stay while in the nation’s capital.

The choice of car was in keeping with his simple habits and his stand against consumerism. His decision to roll down the windows reflected his penchant for trying to connect to ordinary people despite the tight secu-

rity around him.

During his six-day, threecity visit to the U.S., the pope will meet with the president on Wednesday, address Congress on Thursday, speak at the United Nations in New York on Friday and take part in a Vatican-sponsored conference on the family in Philadelphia over the weekend.

The Argentine known as the “slum pope” for ministering to the downtrodden in his native Buenos Aires is expected to urge America to take better care of the environment and the poor and return to its founding ideals of religious liberty and open arms toward immigrants.

Born January 6, 1923, in Joliet. A U.S. Army veteran, John proudly served his country during WWII and is listed in the National World War II Memorial Registry of Remembrances. Retired from Teamsters Local #179 in 1984 and former owner of Rogan Trucking. He enjoyed fishing on Stony Lake in Hackensack, MN, playing the slot machines at the casino and spending time with his family, children and grandchildren.

Madge was born on October 22, 1929, in Joliet, IL. She spent her childhood growing up in Stamford, CT before moving to Toledo, Ohio at age 15 where she met High School Sweetheart and husband, Steve.

She was very proud of her time in Nursing School in Toledo, OH. Madge was a devoted wife and Mother. She worked as a registered nurse in Ohio and Michigan until the family moved to Urbana, IL in 1961. She raised her children and worked until 1974, when the family returned to Joliet.

Madge loved the arts and music, encouraging all of her girls to learn music and play the piano, flute and violin. She enjoyed listening to classical and jazz music. Throughout her life, she spent time sewing, quilting, knitting, watercolor painting and creating crafts. She read numerous books and assembled a large collection of magazines. It was important to Madge that her children experience new foods by cooking recipes she found in these collections. Her favorite travels included trips to Hawaii, Florida, Boston, British Columbia, San Antonio and Tucson. She loved her flowering plants inside and outside her home.

Madge was an avid birdwatcher, especially enjoying goldfinches and hummingbirds. Although she was a late adopter of using the computer, she liked searching the internet and participating in Facebook.

Madge was a devoted member to the Catholic Church. She volunteered

for the church in the late 1970s, providing assistance and transportation to refugees located in the Joliet-area. From these experiences, she developed an affinity for exploring different cultures-especially customs, clothing and food. She very much appreciated her time with the Christian Women’s group and Bible Study. She was a proud member of TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly).

She cherished this group and the friends she made along the way.

Funeral Services will be held at the Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home, 2320 Black Rd., Saturday, September 26, at 10:00 a.m.

When public policy, private pain collide LEBANON – Sometimes, it’s easy to forget public policy can collide with private pain.

I saw that pain Thursday while chatting with state Sen. Kyle McCarter.

McCarter, a Republican from downstate Lebanon, was one of only 11 senators who opposed a $60 million plan to provide taxpayer-funded treatment to heroin addicts.

That isn’t surprising in itself.

McCarter has carved a niche in the Illinois General Assembly as a fiscal conservative.

What makes his situation unusual is he lost his 21-year-old daughter to a heroin overdose.

“My daughter, Amber, was absolutely beautiful and so smart and so headstrong. I can’t imagine where she got that last trait. But it wasn’t from her mother,” he said with sad smile.

Amber, who became involved with drugs as a teenager, was found dead in 2006 along railroad tracks in Brooklyn, a hard-luck village near East St. Louis.

His daughter had just left drug rehabilitation.

“She had been off drugs for 45 days and she was doing great and then for some reason decided to use again. The dose of heroin she used was mixed with fentanyl, and her body just couldn’t take it,” McCarter said as tears welled in his eyes.

McCarter is a man who cares about the addicted.

He and his wife open their home to recovering addicts and others facing serious challenges as part of their support of Mercy Ministries, a faith-based recovery program.

Not only does he provide a home, but he also offers job opportunities in his business for those in recovery.

From a strictly political point of view, it’s hard to discern why McCarter would vote the way he did.

Drug treatment programs are popular with voters, and even the harshest opponent would be hard-

But McCarter voted just the opposite.

“I voted against the program because the state is broke and doesn’t have $60 million for a new program. But, more importantly, I don’t think these government-sponsored programs work.”

In fact, more than 90 percent of heroin addicts who go through rehabilitation use again.

Admittedly, some folks who backslide later become sober, but that is small conciliation for a family such as the McCarters, who lost their daughter on the first relapse.

“Some people voted for this because they wanted to show they care,” he said. “But you can’t just throw money at a problem and expect it to be solved. We all care.”

McCarter believes the solution to the heroin epidemic lies with peer-based preventative programs and faith-based treatment.

“Young people need to know they are loved, they are valued, and they are important to God. And they need to hear it from their peers” he said. “And that needs to be shared in the way they communicate – social media.”

And when it comes to helping addicts, McCarter said the solution lies outside of government with individuals and religious institutions providing funding for treatment.

He wishes such a program had been available for his daughter.

While one may debate the most effective way to treat heroin addiction, it’s impossible to question the sincerity of McCarter’s beliefs.

To the Editor: Before hundreds of millions of dollars are spent on a new, self-indulgent palace of justice (Will County Courthouse) as in DuPage County, cheaper, effective alternatives need to be explored to improve safety and reduce congestion.

People act as if the current reinforced concrete courthouse is made of kryptonite and can’t be modified or improved. To start with – to improve safety, reduce congestion and handle prisoners, move the criminal courts to the county jail with a totally new and blank-sheet-of-paper design, and expand the satellite court system especially for traffic court throughout the county.

Local city council chambers would make excellent venues. In addition, an annex to the current courthouse would provide additional space and flexibility.

opinion concerning the Friday night high school football games that Joliet Township High School District 204 has reintroduced at both the Central and West campuses.

The incredibly positive energy and enthusiasm that their Friday night contest brings to the entire Joliet community can be seen clearly in the large crowds that have attended these games to cheer for their home teams, the Steelmen and Tigers.

Thank you to the District 204 Board of Education and school administration for bringing back this wonderful athletic experience to the “City of Champions.”

Romeoville knew that going into Tuesday’s Southwest Prairie Conference matchup between the two, but there

wasn’t much it could do to shut the Tigers down.

North scored a pair of goals around the break to overcome an early Spartans advantage and went on to capture a 5-3 victory for its eighth straight win.

Austin Hansen scored two goals, Mitch Rathbun had a goal and an assist, Alex Lynch and Nick Anweiler also scored, and Mariano Franchi

had an assist for coach Steve Berry’s team.

“We’re a team that started last June, and we’re trying to get better every time that we step on the field in training or games,” Berry said. “We know that every opponent is going to give us certain problems and play us a different way.

“We felt that we started off nice, but Romeoville answered and then got the lead. We

showed enough character to keep playing and come back.

We got some really good play off of the bench today. We’re kind of dynamic since we can get goals from a lot of different players, and that pressure just kept going. When we move the ball, we’re tough to defend.”

Lynch gave the Tigers (121, 3-0) the initial lead in the 13th minute when he fired in a liner, but the Spartans (6-5,

1-1) responded 30 seconds later when Arturo Escot connected on a similar type of attempt.

Romeoville grabbed its only lead in the 29th minute when Christian Duarte found Pat Bednarz, who put in a shot to put his team up, 2-1.

“Those goals around halftime were big, and we were really able to take over the game after that,” Rathbun said. “Farther into the game, I thought that their defensive line started to break apart.

We were able to start going up through the center of their midfield.

“We have a phenomenal front line, and our backups are extremely good, and a lot of them could start on other teams. They come off the bench and put in effort the entire time. Our defensive line is fast, our midfield has great combinations, and our offensive line is nonstop punishment the entire game. What I love about our team is that it’s nonstop pressure all of the time.”

Saturday was a big day individually for a couple former Joliet Catholic running backs. Ty Isaac broke a 76yard touchdown run and finished with 114 yards in eight carries in Michigan’s 28-7 win over UNLV. Isaac has 162 yards and is averaging 8.9 a carry for the season.

Even though Illinois lost to North Carolina, 48-13, Josh Ferguson rushed for 133 yards in 22 carries, a 6.0 average. His long run covered 52 yards. Ferguson has 248 rushing yards and is averaging 5.3 a carry. He also has nine receptions for 73 yards.

Also at Illinois, safety Clayton Fejedelem (Lemont) has been busy. He made 14

Defensive tackle Robbie Bain (Bolingbrook) was in on three stops.

• After transferring from Illinois, Aaron Bailey (Bolingbrook) is in his first season at Northern Iowa (2-1), a member of the FCS Missouri Valley Conference. One game into this season, he took over the starting quarterback job and has impressed.

Bailey has completed 33 of 57 passes, 57.9 percent, for 423 yards and four touchdowns.

He also is the Panthers’ leading rusher, having carried 52 times for 276 yards, a 5.3 average, and two touchdowns.

• Army (0-3) has lost, 37-35, to Fordham; 22-17 to UConn; and 17-14 to Wake Forest. So the Black Knights are competitive but are coming up just short so far this season under coach Jeff Monken (Joliet Central).

• Mike Uremovich (Providence), the head coach at St. Francis from 2005 through 2011, is having a successful run at North Carolina State.

He is the offensive line coach for the Wolfpack (3-0), which is averaging more than 40 points and more than 440 yards of offense.

PRO BASKETBALL

I hated to see Indiana oust the Sky from the WNBA playoffs. Sky guard Allie Quigley (JCA) had a strong three-game series, averaging 18 points and shooting 59 percent (23 of 39) from the field, including .438 (7 of 16) from 3-point range.

However, Quigley, the WNBA’s Sixth Woman of the Year for a second straight year, would be the first to tell you none of those individual numbers matter. It’s all about the team winning, and the Sky now will not be able to improve on last year’s WNBA runner-up finish.

• Richaun Holmes (Lockport) reportedly has said the elbow injury that plagued him in the summer is feeling

better, and he expects to be ready for the Philadelphia 76ers’ training camp, which opens next week. The 76ers selected Holmes out of Bowling Green in this year’s NBA Draft.

PRO BASEBALL

The Arizona Fall League typically is reserved for major league teams’ top prospects, and Boston has assigned first baseman Sam Travis (Providence) to the Surprise Saguaros. In 61 games with Double-A Portland this season after making the Single-A-Advanced Carolina League All-Star team while at Salem, Travis hit .294 with a .366 on-base percentage and .429 slugging percentage.

Imagine having to face Indiana for those few years with Travis and the Cubs’ Kyle Schwarber hitting backto-back in the lineup. There are baseball people who will tell you they formed the most potent 1-2 punch in all of college baseball.

The Joliet Catholic graduate gained a career-high 114 yards, including a 76-yard touchdown, to help Michigan beat UNLV, 28-7, on Saturday.

Isaac had to sit out last year after transferring from USC and was handed the ball just 10 times over the first two games this season with the Wolverines.

“I’ve been here for a year without playing, doing a lot of practice-squad stuff,” he said. “I know that stuff helps your team, but it feels a lot better when you can put it on the scoreboard and help your team win.”

with the offensive line opening holes for De’Veon Smith, who had career highs with 127 yards rushing, 23 carries and three scores. Smith looked sluggish against the Rebels, however, running for just 33

yards on 13 carries.

“We don’t ever talk about any running back controversy – just so you know – from here on out,” coach Jim Harbaugh bristled. “Quarterback controversy, I’ll address that. Whenever you want to know who the starting quarterback is, I will talk to you about that.”

Harbaugh continued to defend his starting QB, Jake Rudock, who has six turnovers in three games.

“His job is to win football games,” Harbaugh said.

The Wolverines (2-1) have won two straight after opening with a loss at Utah in Harbaugh’s debut as their coach.

UNLV backup quarterback Kurt Palandech, a Plainfield North graduate, led the Rebels to the Michigan 14 before getting sacked and throwing an incomplete pass in the end zone on the last two plays of the game.

Following Zimmer’s lead, Vikes bounce back

Kevin Harvick’s mettle will be tested in next two races

By JENNA Fryer The Associated Press CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Kevin Harvick and Jimmie Johnson are not enemies.

They have known each other since the early days of their careers, which began in California before the two crossed the country to North Carolina to take a crack at making it in NASCAR. Broke and chasing big dreams, the two drivers born less than three months and 250 miles apart spent many a night crashing on a couch at Ron Hornaday Jr.’s house as they scratched and clawed for a break. They made it to Cup racing, becoming two of the biggest names in NASCAR along the way.

They always recognized the crossed paths in their careers.

When Johnson, eliminated from contention last November from winning a seventh championship, had a chance to help Harvick win his first Sprint Cup title, he opened up his notebook and turned into one of Harvick’s most important weapons.

After Harvick hoisted that championship trophy at the end of last season, he took time to credit the help he and crew chief Rodney Childers received from Johnson the entire weekend leading into the title-deciding final race.

“I felt like I was racing

– practicing a little more amped than I probably needed to be, and Jimmie Johnson was a huge help,” Harvick said after his win. “He’d show up in the trailer after every practice and called and texted to Rodney and myself.

You pull the data up, and I was making some pretty huge mistakes. So that eased my mind going into the day.”

Fast forward to this week, when Harvick’s chances at winning a second consecutive title are shaky, and his relationship with Johnson is suddenly strained. He shoved Johnson in the chest with a closed fist and had to be restrained from going after him again following a devastating performance Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway.

It was all so Kevin Harvick.

Johnson knew what could happen the moment their cars touched around the midway point of the opening race in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

They were third and fourth on a restart, and a push from Joey Logano had shoved Johnson to the apron. He had to get back onto the racing surface, and when he tried, Harvick’s car was right there.

A full day later, both drivers likely think they could have done something differently.

But that’s not how it played out, and the contact crumpled some sheet metal and pushed it against Harvick’s left rear wheel. For two laps, the tire smoking from the friction, Harvick tried to get that sheet metal to give.

He should have pitted. He didn’t, and the decision cost him dearly. The tire exploded, Harvick crashed into the wall and he finished 42nd out of 43 cars, dropping him to last in the 16-driver Chase field.

Johnson has known Harvick long enough to understand this dust-up needs to be repaired because Harvick could spend the next nine weeks making Johnson’s life difficult on the race track.

Harvick was too hot to do it Sunday. The conversation didn’t happen immediately.

But it will. Harvick drives for Stewart-Haas Racing, a customer/partner of Hendrick Motorsports. If anybody knows how to diffuse a situation, it’s Rick Hendrick, who will intervene if needed.

Harvick will arrive in New Hampshire with a much cooler head. He has no choice. He’s got to win either of the next two races, or be as close to perfect as possible to continue his Chase. The field will be whittled to 12 after the Oct. 4 race at Dover, and Harvick needs to find a way into the second round.

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. – The Minnesota Vikings, thoroughly beaten and unquestionably embarrassed in their season opener, were expecting the worst from coach Mike Zimmer when they gathered two days later to begin preparation for the next game.

Oh, Zimmer was upset.

The team that lost, 20-3, to San Francisco in front of a national TV audience, he said shortly after that humiliation, was not one he recognized. His sharp, blunt criticism had no bounds anywhere on the roster last week.

Zimmer, a Lockport graduate, decided not to dwell on the performance, however. He hardly harped on the mistakes at all. The video clips – far more blooper reel than highlight film – barely were shown.

The team, Zimmer believed, simply needed to move on.

“I knew if it lingered on, that going 0-2 to start the season and losing a division game at home would not be a good thing,” Zimmer said.

The Vikings responded precisely the way he hoped, with a 26-16 victory over Detroit. Just about every facet of the team, almost every player, was better against the Lions than six days before.

The clunker on kickoff weekend remained a mystery, although Zimmer sounded settled on an explanation through insight from mentor and former boss Bill Parcells, about public perception that built over the summer of the Vikings being a team on the

rise in the NFC and the 49ers being in steep decline.

“Hey, Mike,’ ” Parcells told Zimmer in their conversation earlier this week, “it’s human nature.”

Human nature, too, would be to feel satisfied with this bounce-back game, but that’s the way to a losing record.

“We can’t take the cheese this week either because people will be saying nice things about us,” Zimmer said. “We have to make sure that we continue to work the way we work, study the way we study, and go out and practice.”

The Vikings host San Diego on Sunday.

“It’s a good week to be demanding,” Zimmer said. “It’s a good week to be demanding.”

Barely into his second season in Minnesota, Zimmer has displayed a knack for connecting with the players in a tough-love type of way. The Vikings finished only 7-9 in his first year, but there were signs of progress.

“You know the players are going to go as their coach goes.

I think it’s just the type of players we have on the team, though, even more so than coach Zimmer,” wide receiver Mike Wallace said.

“There are a lot of coaches who can speak one thing, and the players still do another thing. I think we have a lot of guys who, at each position, are going to set the tone and be like, ‘No, we’re going to kind of keep it level.’ ” “Zim’s a guy who never sugarcoats anything. He is always 100 percent truthful.

That’s what he’s given us,” safety Harrison Smith said.

DETROIT – Rajai Davis’ two-out triple in the 10th gave Detroit a 2-1 victory over the White Sox on Tuesday night, one inning after the Tigers lost a combined no-hitter.

Anthony Gose drew a twoout walk from Zach Duke (36) in the 10th. Davis sliced a 3-1 fastball into the corner in right field and Gose easily beat Trayce Thompson’s throw to the plate.

Blaine Hardy (5-3) got the win with a scoreless 10th.

The Tigers were two outs away from the first combined no-hitter in franchise history. But Neftali Feliz, making his debut as the Tigers’ closer after Bruce Rondon was sent home earlier in the day, couldn’t finish it.

With one out, Tyler Saladino tripled to break up the no-hitter and Adam Eaton, who had broken up Detroit’s attempt at a perfect game by being hit with a pitch in the seventh, tied the game with a single.

Daniel Norris, who was on a limit of 60-65 pitches in his second start back from an oblique injury, threw five perfect innings before being lifted. Arrieta wins 20th game as Cubs’ magic number hits 3 CHICAGO – Jake Arrieta threw a three-hitter to become the first pitcher in the major leagues to reach 20 wins, Kris Bryant set the Cubs rookie record for home runs, and the Cubs inched closer to a playoff berth with a 4-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night.

Looking loose after manager Joe Maddon entertained the team with a petting zoo in the outfield at Wrigley Field before the game, Arrieta (20-6) struck out 11 for the Cubs, whose magic number for making its first postseason in seven years dropped to three.

The right-hander retired 14 in a row at one point in becoming the first Cubs pitcher to win 20 games since Jon Lieber in 2001.

Embracing more grains? Here’s the cooking primer you need

W

hen Samuel Kim was growing up, his mother often spiked the family’s white rice with amaranth, barley, quinoa and other whole grains to boost its nutritional value.

“My mom is one of those people who looks for the health benefit in everything,” said Kim, executive chef at Washington, D.C.’s 1789 restaurant. “Any new fad or trend, she’s reading about it and adding it to her diet.”

In this case, Kim’s mom was ahead of her time. Whole grains have crossed the frontier from hippie fad into mainstream American ingredient, showing up not only in restaurant fare such as Kim’s freekeh and black quinoa-studded dishes, but also at salad joints and in multiple supermarket aisles (and not just the natural foods sections).

Driven by a new awareness of healthy eating, increased demand for gluten-free products, and a desire to spark up their kitchen routine, more Americans are reaching for exotic grains with mystifying names such as teff and triticale.

Sales of grains in natural food stores rose more than 40 percent from 2013 to 2014, according to market research firm Mintel. Quinoa remains the leader, with nearly 80 percent of sales, but farro and freekeh showed the greatest growth.

And it isn’t just in natural foods stores. Unusual grains are being sold throughout mainstream grocers, from the sushi by the deli counter to yogurts studded with blends of grains and seeds.

The Milwaukie, Oregon, grain and flour company Bob’s Red Mill saw quinoa explode roughly five years ago, a company spokeswoman said. Executives there realized if people were excited about one obscure South American product – which technically is a seed, but is eaten like a grain – perhaps they would be interested in other whole grains.

“It’s a gateway grain for these more unusual grains,” said Amanda Carter, Bob’s Red Mill marketing manager.

“Quinoa has become a pantry staple.

We see the potential for that to happen with these other ancient grains as well.”

In 2013, the company re-branded some of its whole grains under a new label with packaging that offered a cultural history, nutritional benefits and recipes. The “Grains of Discovery” line now includes 16 whole grains and seeds, including bulgur, farro and sorghum, Carter said. Quinoa still is the company’s best-seller, but farro is second. Sales of millet nearly have doubled.

While whole grains have gained cache, the perception they are difficult to prepare or require a lot of time stops some cooks from using them. But many grains, such as millet, amaranth

and buckwheat, cook as fast as – or faster than – white rice. Slow-cooking grains, such as wheat berries or rye berries, can be soaked overnight like beans then briefly boiled, said cookbook author Maria Speck, who outlines techniques in her new book “Simply Ancient Grains.” Once cooked, they can be stored in the refrigerator for days, Speck said, or even frozen.

“If you have a pot of these grains in the fridge or freezer, you’ll be suddenly so surprised at your own creativity,” Speck said. “Throw a handful of millet or wheat berries into a soup or a salad.

Here you have a meal, and suddenly it’s nourishing and you haven’t done any cooking because you have your grains at the ready.”

An ancient variety of wheat with a nutty flavor and creamy texture, farro makes a good substitute for rice in dishes such as risotto (called farrotto).

For the shortest cooking time and best results when working with whole farro, Maria Speck, author of “Simply Ancient Grains,” said to cover 1 cup of farro with 2 cups of boiling water, then let the grain soak, covered, overnight. When you are ready to cook, turn on the heat and simmer, covered, for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the kernels just begin to pop. It also can be cooked in a large pot of boiling salted water, as you would pasta, then drained, but still must be soaked overnight.

Semi-pearled farro – the variety you are most likely to find at most mainstream grocers – does not need to be soaked and can be cooked using the same two boiling methods, but with cooking time reduced to 20 to 25 minutes, Speck says. In all cases, let the fully cooked grain stand in the covered pot for 10 minutes before serving to absorb any remaining moisture.

Fritters: For farro and cheddar fritters, combine 1 beaten egg with ½ cup milk. Stir in 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder and hefty pinches of salt and pepper.

Mix in 1 cup cooked farro and 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese.

Heat a small amount of vegetable oil in a large skillet and drop the farro mixture by the tablespoonful, flattening the mounds with the back of the spoon. Fry until golden brown on the bottoms, then carefully turn over. Fry on the other side until golden and the fritters are cooked through, 4 to 5 minutes total. Use a slotted spoon to transfer to a paper towel-lined rack. Repeat with remaining farro mixture. Serve warm with hot marinara sauce.

mouth guard. It positions the lower jaw slightly forward and down. This opens the airway. The device is simple, portable and silent.

For the study, researchers recruited 96 men and women with sleep apnea. Half used a custom-fitted oral device as they slept. The other half used a placebo night guard – one that didn’t correctly reposition the lower jaw. At the end of the four-month study, people who used the custom appliance had greater improvements in sleep apnea and snoring than those using the placebo device. Both groups had a little improvement in daytime sleepiness.

Interestingly, more than half of the people who used the placebo device found it so effective that they wanted to keep using it.

This was a study of a single device, and it lasted just for four months.

So it is difficult to draw definite conclusions about the device’s value.

And it is not possible to draw conclusions about other oral appliances.

Yet, the report is encouraging for those who have trouble using CPAP. If you have sleep apnea, try the following to counter the problem.

First, sleep on your side.

Though you’ll inevitably change position during the night, starting off on your side may help keep your airways open.

Second, lose a few pounds if you are overweight.

If these changes don’t work, talk with your doctor about other treatment options.

Dear Dr. K: I have sleep apnea, and I don’t particularly like the CPAP treatment. I’ve heard that night guards might be an effective alternative.

What can you tell me?

Dear Reader: One way or another, getting treatment for sleep apnea is really important.

Untreated, sleep apnea increases your risk for high blood pressure, stroke and early death.

The airways of people with obstructive sleep apnea narrow as they sleep, and air struggles to get through. People with this condition may breathe shallowly or stop breathing several times an hour. Each time that happens, the amount of oxygen in their blood drops. As a result, all the organs of the body that need oxygen suffer temporarily. If low oxygen levels occur repeatedly, it can cause more persistent problems.

The most-tested treatment for sleep apnea is a breathing machine known as “continuous positive airway pressure” (CPAP). CPAP keeps airways open by increasing the pressure at which air travels through them. It’s effective, but it requires a pump to generate pressurized air, a conduction tube and a mask that must be worn over the nose.

Many people who try CPAP don’t stick with it. Those who abandon CPAP often say that the mask is claustrophobic, the tubing gets in their way as they sleep, or the hum from the machine is hard to tolerate.

For that reason, a number of alternative devices have been proposed. These are used inside the mouth and are designed to keep the airway open -- without involving a compressor machine or tubing. A report published in JAMA Internal Medicine describes one such device, which is similar to a

He should never have allowed himself to be held hostage by her threats to kill herself, which is classic emotional blackmail.

This “citizenship” marriage has been a sham from the beginning, and your son should end it.
