But getting people to talk isn’t so easy.

Fighting crime in the neighborhood was the focus of the Monday meeting of the Forest Park Neighborhood Council.

Joliet police and representatives from the Housing Authority of Joliet joined the meeting aimed at dealing with two recent fatal shootings at the Fairview Homes housing complex.

HAJ officials said they are working on improving the security cameras at Fairview.

But more citizen involvement will be a surer way to fight crime, neighbors and police agreed.

“I want you to call your neighbors. Call your friends,” Garland Mays, president of

the Forest Park Neighborhood Council said at the start of the meeting. “Tell them we’re going to address these issues. ...

We’re going to address these issues because it’s gone on too long.”

The neighborhood includes Fairview Homes. And some of the discussion was devoted to finding ways to bring more Fairview residents to the neighborhood council meetings.

But a few were at the meeting Monday, including Linda Temple.

Temple said Fairview is “too open. It’s not safe. People just come from the outside, and they blend in.”

Police, however, said it was unlikely that a wall would be built around the housing complex. They said they needed citizens help in solving crimes.

Morris City Council approves annexation agreement with Costco

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A project that was first proposed in November 2013 is in motion.

Morris City Council voted, 8-1, Monday night to approve an annexation agreement between the city of Morris and Costco Wholesale Corporation and K&S Real Estate LLC for the annexation of about 140 acres in Saratoga Township along North Lisbon Road in Grundy County.

Costco will spend an estimated $120 million for a 255,996-square-foot meat processing plant, Costco Development Manager Ted Johnson told the council Monday night.

The site plan recently was downsized, but Costco intends to expand the facility eventually, he said.

“We tried out a larger shell, and the [cost] numbers just got crazy,” Johnson said. “When we decide to expand we’ll come back to the city and do this pro-

cess again.”

The building will employ about 155 people and about 220 during peak times of the year.

Johnson said the plant would be producing more product around Labor Day, Fourth of July and Memorial Day. The meat processing plant will function best when paired with an adjoining depot, Johnson said.

Alderman Don Matteson voted no to the agreement after raising concerns about sewage discharge.

“I think the citizens of Morris should be supplied with equal amounts of potable water before a meatball place,” Matteson said to the committee as the meeting closed.

In the public hearing, Alderman Randy Larson’s expressed concerns about the city’s ability to absorb sewage discharge from the plant.

The Water and Sewer Committee, particularly Aldermen Julian Houston and Duane Wolfe, tried to assure Larson

that Morris City Engineer Larry Good has done extensive work on the project since 2013 toward the goal of ensuring environmental safety.

Houston pointed out Good has worked with engineers of Costco’s California meat processing facility to find the proper amounts of discharge allowable. Morris City Attorney Scott Belt said Costco has every incentive to keep the numbers in check and surcharges will be administered if they surpass the limits. The discharge contents also will be tested within 30 days of opening and each year.

Larson asked about discharge rate into the site’s retention pond. Building and Zoning Officer Bill Cheshareck said the pond can’t release any more water than it does now into the water main.

Council also approved the Morris Planning Commission’s recommendation to rezone the future plant site property to a manufacturing district.

The two fatal Fairview shootings occurred Aug. 23 and Sept. 13. One arrest has been made. Neither the victims nor the one suspect lived at Fairview.

Lt. Bob Desiderio said there have been 32 violent crimes in Forest Park this year. That compares to 35 in 2014 and 38 in 2013.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Lolita Bonick has, for the past four years since she was laid off, been coming on and off to the Plainfield Interfaith Food Pantry.

These days, she goes to the pantry mostly to help with her grandchildren.

“I started collecting unemployment, but I would rather be working than doing that,” said Bonick, a Plainfield resident who now collects Social Security.

“I’m surviving on half the income now,” she said. “The food pantry is extremely important for me.”

September is Hunger Action Month, which is the national organization Feeding America’s campaign to bring public awareness to ending hunger.

Bonick is just one of many who come every weekday to the Plainfield Interfaith Food Pantry, which is one of two dozen pantries in Will County supplied by the Northern Illinois Food Bank.

The NIFB, which helps feed 13 northern Illinois counties, distributed 8.4 million meals in Will County in fiscal 2015.

“Hunger is still an issue across all of the counties we serve,” said Donna Larkin-Lake, communications director at the NIFB. About 10 percent of residents and 17 percent of children in Will County are at risk of hunger, Larkin-Lake said, meaning they’re frequently unsure of where their next meal is coming from.

“Hunger is evident in every neighborhood,” Larkin-Lake said. “You don’t often visually see it. It affects our neighbors, people like us.”

While these types of food bank recipients have been the norm, another demographic has started going to food pantries more often.

In addition to coordinating summer meal programs and partnering with schools to provide snacks and meals for after-school programs, organizations such as the NIFB offer meals through food pantries that act as distribution points.

The St. Patrick’s Food Pantry, which operates out of St. Patrick’s Church at 710 W. Marion St. in Joliet, is one of those points, pantry board member Alicia Tocwish said.

“Every bit helps,” she said of the need for pantry donations from the broader community.

“During the summer months there is a greater need because we have children at home instead of going to school. Families don’t have that extra meal a day.”

While the need for more food has increased during the past 10 to 15 years, Tocwish said things are starting to look slightly better recently.

“From discussions with other food pantries, we’re seeing people are going back to work and [the price of] gas is lower,”

D-205’s fiscal 2016 budget approved

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Lockport High School District 205 board members approved a smaller budget compared to last year but one that is more balanced.

On Monday, board members unanimously approved the fiscal 2016 budget, which has overall revenues at about $54 million and expenses at $53.6 million. The budget contains a surplus of about $293,000.

Compared to overall revenues for the fiscal 2015 budget, which was at roughly $59 million, this year’s spending plan

is down about 8 percent.

Stefanie Croix, district business services director, said the budget is smaller because last year district officials paid off bonds and completed capital projects. Nevertheless, the economic outlook for District 205 is brighter than in years past.

“We’re in a good financial shape compared to a lot of our neighbors,” Croix said. “Part of that is our board goal of budgeting conservatively.”

According to a district budget report, the 2014-15 school year marked the largest increase in local housing starts – which means potentially more students and a larger

property tax base – since the early 2000s, with a total of 74.

Housing starts declined from 2002 to 2008, with the crash of the housing market.

The budget reflects an overall 13.9 percent decrease in expenses from fiscal 2015, district officials said. Some of the few increases have been in purchased services and about a 3.4 percent increase in salaries.

Moving ahead, District 205 officials expect their campuses to undergo its next 10-year Life Safety Survey as required by state law. Because of the advanced age of the Central campus, they expect the survey

to list a number of concerns about the building.

Lockport Township High School District 205 – along with Joliet Township High School District 204 – is one of many school districts approving budgets as the state continues without a budget. Gov. Bruce Rauner and a Democrat-controlled Legislature have not agreed on a budget since the fiscal year began July 1.

District officials said the financial condition of the state continues to be a “major concern,” including its ability to meet public school funding obligations. Superintendent Todd Wernet stated in a letter

that District 205 must rely on local property tax dollars for funding like other school districts.

“We understand the burden this places on our local community,” he wrote. “As your superintendent, I will continue to fight legislation that has threatened to even further reduce our state dollars.”

Some of those legislations included Senate Bill 16 and Senate Bill 1, which attempt to change the state school funding formula. District officials said under both bills the high schools would lose more than 80 percent of its state funding, or $2.7 million.

Plainfield shoots down gun-shaped cell phone cases

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Among the few things a smartphone now can’t do is replicate the look of a firearm in Plainfield.

The Village Board Monday night unanimously approved a new ordinance banning the purchase, possession, usage, sale or giveaway of replica firearm cell phone cases.

The fine for violating the ordinance is confiscation and $250 for the first offense and $500 for any additional offense in addition to court costs.

“This is really a proactive ordinance,” Police Chief John Konopek said.

The only exception to this new law is if a sworn law enforcement officer purchases, possesses, conceals or uses the case in connections with lawful employment, including sanctioned training exercises.

The city of Chicago banned the use of the cell phone cases on July 28, according to a CBS News report. The fine for Chicagoans is $750, according to the report.

Konopek explained that the replica can look like a real gun when placed in a pocket, or when held by the grip while talking on the phone. He also

demonstrated that the gun trigger can click, which may not result in a bang, but still can cause panic.

“We’ve been fortunate this year we’ve had a couple incidents with lookalike weapons,” Konopek said, referring to times when officers were

very close to shooting kids who were playing with airsoft guns July 3, and a 64-year-old man threatened to shoot people with a realistic replica gun near Plainfield Central High School earlier this month.

Trustees had several questions about certain scenarios and who would be assessed the penalty in situations.

Trustee Brian Wojowski, a New Lenox police officer, asked what would happen to any company that mails it to a customer in the village.

Konopek said that unless the company is based in Plainfield, it couldn’t be fined. Also, in case a vendor in Plainfield violates the order, the $250 fine would be assessed per occurrence, not per violation.

Trustee Garrett Peck suggested increasing the fines.

“This could be a life or death situation,” Peck said, also asking what happens when a minor is in possession of the gun case.

Konopek said it’s ultimately the parents that are responsible but it depends on a case.

“But if a 10-year-old is walking around with something like this, we’re going to take a visit to the parents,” Konopek said.

Trustee Jim Racich said it was important to get the word out for the new law.

“The simple fact is ignorance is not an excuse,” he said.

Guardian Angel Community Services of Joliet to provide adult protective services

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Guardian Angel Community Services in Joliet – known in the community as a safe haven for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence – will provide adult protective services for Will County residents beginning Oct. 1.

Guardian Angel, the oldest nonprofit in Will County, will soon respond to reports of abuse, neglect or financial exploitation of people ages 60 or older and people with disabilities ages 18 to 59, according to a news release from the Area Agency on Aging of Northeastern Illinois.

Ines Kutlesa, CEO of Guardian Angel, said the agency has selected Guardian Angel for a multi-year contract. The nonprofit will contract directly with the state.

Offering these services “is a logical extension” of the services that Guardian Angel has provided for years, Kutlesa said in the news release.

“Our mission is to help empower people to improve the quality of their lives, and the Adult Protective Services program will help to protect some of our most vulnerable populations in Will County,” Kutlesa said in the release.

For years, Senior Services Center of Will County has been the designated provider in the county for reports of elder abuse, and more recently, adult protective services, said Marla Fronczak, community planning manager for the agency.

When asked, Fronczak said the changeover has nothing to do with Senior Services’ recent financial troubles, which have since turned around, she said.

Fronczak said the Illinois Adult Protective Services program – once known as the Elder Abuse and Neglect Program – was expanded in 2013 to include people aged 18 to 59 with disabilities.

Because of that expansion, the agency opted for Guardian Angel because of the nonprofit’s extensive experience with

domestic violence court cases and the under-60 population, she said.

The program was expanded two years ago because of the increase of cases involving adults with disabilities ages 18 to 59.

Fronczak said the program is entirely state-funded. Until a state budget is in place, Guardian Angel essentially will be

footing the bill, she said.

“We’re still waiting on that budget,” Fronczak said.

If funding becomes available in the future, Fronczak said Guardian Angel may be able to respond to self-neglect cases – such as in instances of hoarding and when a person doesn’t have the ability to care for themselves.

Joliet Central history video to show at museum Video details history behind nationally recognized school building JOLIET – The history of the Joliet Central High School building will come alive this week at the Joliet Area Historical Museum with the premier of a video feature.

From 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, the museum, 204 N. Ottawa St. in Joliet, will have a premiere showing of “To Thee We’ll E’er Be True,” a documentary – as well as a tribute – to the history of Joliet Central. The school, housed in a castle-like limestone structure, was previously known as Joliet Township High School.

The event is free and open to the public. The museum also will have a tour of historical artifacts from Central, 201 E. Jefferson St. The Joliet Township High School archives committee produced the video, which is filled with “more than a century of [Joliet Township] memories and information,” according to a District 204 news release.

“There’s so much to see and when you think about it, it’s hard to get everything since 1901 [when the school opened], the history starts even earlier than that,” said Tana Gray, archives committee chairwoman.

She said the video is for people who are fans of history or even curious how District 204 has impacted Joliet. The video includes the story behind how the Central building was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

The late historian Dorothy Crombie was a leader, both of the archives committee for more than 25 years and in the effort to give Central national recognition. She spent years gathering materials to research Central’s history.

CHANNAHON – The Channahon Village Hall is seeking the donation of a large, live evergreen tree for the village’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.

Pilcher Park plans under review amid accessibility concerns

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Park District has paused Pilcher Park plans while staff consult with the district’s attorney and an expert in park accessibility amid concerns raised by the Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living.

Construction bids on the $2.2 million project were supposed to go out this week, but park board President Glen Marcum said he’s decided to pull back so the plan can be reviewed.

In question is whether the conversion of a driveable main loop into a recreational trail would unnecessarily limit people with disabilities from venturing into the heart of the park.

Pam Heavens, executive director for WGCIL, said the district should have reached out to those with disabilities and organizations like WGCIL before moving forward.

“We were not invited to offer comment,” she said.

The Park District board voted July 27 to move ahead with one of two plans presented at the same meeting by Ruettiger, Tonelli & Associates, the design consultant firm hired.

Marcum said that night marked the first time the plan was ever presented during a public meeting. Two residents then raised concern about the design and lack of public input, but the board moved forward anyway.

Marcum said the changes to the loop are not as dramatic as perceived. A different section of the park will remain driveable, he said.

Rita Rogan, a park user and licensed clinical psychologist who previously served as a Section 504 coordinator for the state of Michigan, is working with Heavens on an upcoming event at Pilcher Park to raise awareness about accessibility issues.

Marcum questioned the intentions of Rogan, who is an organizer for the Facebook group, Save the Pilcher Park Dam, which has deeply criticized the district in recent years over the dam’s possible removal.

“I think [Pam Heavens] raises some good points, and we took those into consider-

ation,” he said. “But [Save the Pilcher Park Dam] also wants it their way or no way.”

Rogan said while she is part of the Facebook group, her involvement with accessibility issues dates back decades.

“This is not a light issue for me. ... I have been involved in the field for a number of years,” she said.

John McGovern, president of Recreation Accessibility Consultants LLC, said park staff has asked that his organization review the plans. Staff will compare the plans with the Illinois Accessibility Code, ADA Standards for Accessible Design and pending federal ADA guidelines for outdoor recreation.

“I know from talking with the district that their intent is to fully comply,” he said. “We believe here that we would much rather have the Park District go further toward compliance than fall short.”

Heavens said she has concerns about the district’s lack of an ADA officer and a written transition plan that addresses deficiencies found within the park’s sites.

A 2012 ADA report evaluating district sites obtained

by Heavens is “bare bones,” she said, and doesn’t address issues with policies or trails, picnic tables and other public facilities.

“I was surprised how short the report was,” she said.

Marcum said he is taking Heavens’ concerns into consideration.

“I believe people can change and turn their lives around,” she said.

The measure had support from Mothers Against Drunk Driving and the Alliance Against Intoxicated Motorists.

“I don’t think it’s cause for alarm,” said Rita Kreslin, executive director of AAIM. “This is for the individual that has proven to be sober. Many individuals whose driving privileges have been revoked continue to drive anyway.”

David Armstrong, 35, who works at the Rockford Rescue Mission and is a father of two, lost his license in 2009 after his fourth DUI. He said a restricted permit would let him take his children to school.

“It will allow me to be a dad,” he said. “Right now, I bus it or walk. Opportunities would open up like crazy for jobs.”

Plainfield pantry started as a church service • FOOD PANTRY

Like St. Patrick’s, the Plainfield Interfaith Food Pantry started as a church service.

Mary Dickerson helped establish the pantry more than two decades ago and managed it for several years before transitioning to a volunteer role.

“We started up in St. Mary [Immaculate Parish],” Dickerson said. “They gave us one little room.”

The Plainfield Interfaith Food Pantry now operates out of the Plainfield Township building at 22525 Lockport St. Dickerson said people would always come to her house for food when she was growing up in Chicago, nurturing her spirit for volunteering at a food pantry.

“I know what it’s like to grab food and I like to work,” she said.

Saar started volunteering six years ago after her husband died.

She said she has noticed an increase in food recipients since she started, but it looks

like conditions have gotten better during the past year.

“Supposedly, their lives have gotten better,” Saar said.

“We have fewer people, but you’re happy for them.”

CHICAGO – Data from the Illinois Secretary of State’s office show more than 5,000 Illinois residents who were convicted of drunken driving four times and had their licenses revoked could legally drive again under a new state law.

Gov. Bruce Rauner last month signed a measure that would provide restricted permits if drivers prove they are drug and alcohol free for at least three years. Previously, drivers with four or more DUIs have their licenses revoked for life. The new law takes effect Jan. 1.

Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White’s office is preparing rules to issue the permits to eligible drivers, who will be monitored by one of nine companies the state hires to supervise the breath ignition-interlock devices, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Numbers provided by the office show 2,842 of those with revoked licenses after four DUI convictions live in the Chicago area. Every county in Illinois has at least one person with a revoked license for multiple DUIs. Democratic state Rep. Elaine Nekritz of Northbrook sponsored the measure. She said she’s not sure all of the 5,085 motorists on the secretary of state’s list will be eligible for permits.

The law allows those qualified to apply for the restricted driving permit five years after revocation or release from imprisonment. Those who obtain a permit must operate a vehicle equipped with an ignition interlock device. If the person subsequently is convicted of DUI, the permit is revoked and the person is permanently barred from acquiring a restricted permit.

He also belonged to WRC Recreation Club where he spent a lot of time fishing, camping and sharing funny stories with everyone he met.

Gus will be truly missed around the campfires to come.

Rae was a loving, caring person gifted in reaching out to offer support in healing and personal growth. She was passionate in her efforts to help and affirm people in reaching their potential to find wholeness in happier, healthier lives. She will be profoundly missed by those who loved her.

John J. Rogan, Sr., age 92. At rest Sunday, September 20, 2015, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice home surrounded by his loving family.

Born January 6, 1923, in Joliet. A U.S. Army veteran, John proudly served his country during WWII and is listed in the National World War II Memorial Registry of Remembrances. Retired from Teamsters Local #179 in 1984 and former owner of Rogan Trucking. He enjoyed fishing on Stony Lake in Hackensack, MN, playing the slot machines at the casino and spending time with his family, children and grandchildren.

Survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Pauline (nee Wedic); children, James (Deborah) Rogan, John Jr. (Lynn) Rogan and Patricia (Roger) Hiller; five grandchildren, Scott (Karen) Rogan, John III (Andy) Rogan, Sarah Rogan, Michele Dolbee and Jason (Lori) Rogan; 11 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Joseph Wedic; sister-in-law, Judith Hamilton; Karen (Mike) Foster who drove John to the casino and was like a daughter to him; and many nieces and nephews also survive.

Preceded in death by his father, Albert Rogan; mother, Mary (nee Baudino); and stepfather, James Jones.

Francis traveled to Holguin and celebrated a Mass where Cuban rhythms mixed with church hymns under a scorching tropical sun.

CHICAGO – A DNA sample submitted by a central Illinois man after a recent conviction led to his arrest in the 1985 stabbing death of a teenager who’d left her suburban Chicago home to buy candy, authorities said Monday.

Kristina Wesselman’s body was found July 22, 1985, in a field she used as a shortcut to a grocery store from her home in unincorporated Glen Ellyn.

The case went cold years ago and many gave up hope that it would ever be solved.

Michael R. Jones, 62, of Champaign appeared in bond court Monday on two counts of murder and one of aggravated sexual assault in the killing of the popular 15-year-old student, who excelled in sports and had been freshman class president. Jones, who was arrested Sunday, is being held without bond.

State’s Attorney Robert Berlin heralded the arrest at a Monday news conference.

“The pain, grief and fear felt by the Wesselman family and the entire community has never gone away,” he said.

Wesselman’s brother, Bill Wesselman, expressed relief, saying his initial reaction to the arrest was “shock and awe.”

“We’ve been waiting for news like this for 30 years,” he said.

Jones has denied any involvement in the killing, Berlin said.

A ‘stupid’ tragedy, justice and moving on

By SAUK VALLEY MEDIA EDITORIAL BOARD Stupid is a word we rarely use in editorials.

It denotes a lack of ordinary quickness and keenness of mind; foolish, senseless and unthinking are synonyms. But it’s a word a 17-year-old Rock Falls boy aptly used during a two-day sentencing hearing in Whiteside County court this month to describe his actions that led to the death of his best friend.

Matt Anderson, 15, died after he was shot in the chest March 1, 2014, when his Rock Falls friend, then 15, found a loaded Glock handgun in the closet of his father, a State Police trooper, brought it out to show Anderson and the gun accidentally discharged.

“I am sorry,” the boy said, with tears in his eyes, before Judge John Hauptman pronounced a sentence of 3 years probation on the charge of reckless conduct. “My stupid decision is the reason why my best friend is not here.”

The boy had no idea the gun would accidentally discharge.

He saw it in his dad’s closet while looking for a pump to inflate a basketball, and thought it would be cool to show it to his friend. It also was a stupid decision for a professional lawman to leave the gun where his son could find it, but it was not illegal. State law requires a gun to be secured if a child on the premises is younger than 14.

The tragedy is a cautionary tale for gun owners, all of whom should redouble efforts to keep their firearms out of the wrong hands.

apology to Anderson’s family; continue seeing a therapist for his post-traumatic stress disorder; not leave the state unless his probation officer approves; don’t possess a firearm; and don’t consume alcohol or illegal drugs. In addition, any weapon in his house must be locked and kept away from his possession.

The boy could have been detained in a juvenile facility until he turned 21, but the judge said the teen was at a low risk of making the same mistake again, and he must live with the guilt he feels for his “tragic lapse in judgment.”

Everyone makes stupid decisions sometime in life.

Most of those decisions don’t have such tragic consequences.

Most of those decisions aren’t as difficult to live with as that one made March 1, 2014.

In contrast, Matt Anderson’s mother made a decision last week that was as thoughtful as it was generous.

Jennifer Anderson tearfully testified to the loss and heartbreak her family has endured.

And then, after the hearing, she met with the Rock Falls boy in private.

“I hugged him, kissed his cheek and told him that we all need to move forward and be the best people we can be,” she said.

“I told him we are here for him if he ever needs anything,” referring to the special bond that had existed between the boys.

Seared by tragedy, Jennifer Anderson chose to share compassion and wisdom with her son’s best friend, who must live with his “stupid decision” the rest of his life.

If she is willing to move forward with her life, so should everyone else.

It would be stupid not to.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Compromise needed in Springfield To the Editor: In Mr. Reeder’s latest column – “Reeder: Lawmakers, not judges, should decide how tax dollars spent,” in the Sept. 16 edition of The Herald-News – he criticizes the state for not paying lottery winners.

He fails to point the finger of accusation at the governor and his administration, since it is his comptroller who is not paying the winners. Instead he continues his attack on the state Legislature. He uses this introduction to segue in to his ongoing attack on the

Democratically controlled Legislature for not rolling over for the governor.

The governor wants to cut services for those in most need, limit workers access to workmen’s compensation, and slash bargaining rights. Reeder accuses the Legislature’s budget of being over by $4 billion, while ignoring the governor’s budget savings proposal of being, I believe, also over-estimated by billions.

Yes, there is gridlock in Springfield, but the solutions will be found with the governor meeting with the Legislature’s leaders and working on compromise, not the gover-

nor’s my-way-or the-highway demands.

The ugly truth here is the state needs more revenues.

You can’t solve our problems – decades and multiple administrations in the making – by cutting and attacking workers.

We need to take a serious look at creating a graduated income tax, which will place the tax burden on citizens more fairly than the current flat tax. Those who make more, will pay more of their fair share, while those who make less, will pay their appropriate amount of taxes.

By JENNA FRYER The Associated Press JOLIET – Nonplussed by Joe Gibbs Racing’s red-hot ride into NASCAR’s playoffs, Kevin Harvick confidently predicted they wouldn’t get in his way of a second consecutive championship.

“We’re going to pound them into the ground,” Harvick said of JGR’s four-car title push.

Instead, it’s Harvick who is on the ropes after the opening race of the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

Contact with Jimmie Johnson led to a blown tire for Harvick that caused him to crash and finish 42nd on Sunday at

Chicagoland Speedway, where he had a brief post-race scuffle with Johnson.

Denny Hamlin, meanwhile, won the race for Gibbs and earned an automatic berth into the second round of the playoffs.

Hamlin declined to comment on the irony of Harvick’s situation.

“I’m not going to get into a verbal thing,” he said. “We’re one race in. It didn’t work out well for him today.”

Troy boys, Minooka girls claim 6th-grade titles SUBMITTED REPORT SHOREWOOD – Joliet area sixth-graders had a big day Saturday at the annual Troy Cross Country Invitational at Troy Middle School, which attracted about 2,250 runners.

Troy finished first and Minooka, led by individual winner Kaleb Lowden, who covered the 1.2-mile race in 6:22, was second in the sixthgrade boys race. Martino was seventh, Channahon ninth, Homer 11th, Manhattan 12th, Dirksen 13th, Aux Sable 15th, Liberty 19th, Mokena 25th, Old Quarry 27th, Summit Hill 29th, Hickory Creek 34th, Washington 39th and Oak Prairie 41st.

He felt the contact could have been avoided.

“I just held my ground and he just slammed into my door like I wasn’t even there,” Harvick said.

Johnson’s version was that he got a push from behind from Joey Logano that sent him down to the apron. As he tried to get back on the track, he made contact with Harvick.

“I assumed he would try to find it as my fault,” Johnson said.

“I just simply needed a lane to get back on the racetrack. He was trying to pin me down and I’ve got to get back up or else there would be a hell of a mess in Turn 1.”

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

Hamlin tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee four days before the regular-season finale, but vowed to preserve through the injury and drive his way into the championship race.

He overcame an awful starting position Sunday, a spin on the second lap of the race, and then used a gutsy call not to pit during the final caution to win the race. He went three-wide on the restart with five laps remaining to take the lead and earn the berth into the second round of the Chase.

After the race, he revealed he’d received a mid-race pep talk via text message from good friend Michael Jordan.

Jordan and Hamlin became friends in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Jordan owns the NBA’s Hornets and Hamlin is a courtside season ticket holder.

Jordan attended the championship race last year and cheered Hamlin on from pit road.

“He texted me on Wednesday, he said he was in Monte Carlo,” Hamlin said. “He says, ‘I know you’re about to head into the playoffs. I just want you to know I’ve never admitted to anybody that anyone is better than me at anything my whole life. But if you win this race this weekend, I will admit that you’re a better driver than I am.’

“So the first thing I’m going to do is text him and say, ‘Admit it, I’m better than you, and I want everyone to know.’ ”

Junior setter Ashley Shook earned Herald-News Player of the Week honors after leading Plainfield Central to a 5-2 record last week.

Shook had 134 assists (19.1 a match), 36 kills (5.1 a match) and 29 blocks (4.1 a match) in the seven matches. The 6-foot-1 setter led Central to wins over Southwest Prairie and crosstown rivals Plainfield North and Plainfield South, along with wins against Libertyville, Prairie Ridge and Wheaton North at the Wheaton Classic.

Providence will need good play across the board to keep its streak going. Saying that huge competition will try to end that streak is an understatement. On Tuesday, the Celtics play Mother McAuley.

“We’re excited at the opportunity to play another strong team,” Celtics coach Brie Isaacson said. “We are hoping to play our best volleyball and see what happens. We know the McAuley match will be a tough one.”

PLAYER HIGHLIGHT

It was well-known that Morris’ Kaylin Korte went into the season wanting to break the 1,000-kill mark.

She hasn’t reached the milestone yet, but she broke two school records on the way.

“Kaylin works very hard both inside and outside the court and it’s

great to see her hard work pay off,” Morris coach Taylor Lafond said.

“Her personal goal is to break 1,000 kills for her varsity career, which is very obtainable. She is also in the running for most blocks and digs for a varsity career. One great thing about Kaylin is she is a great allaround player; you will not see too many players have a record for both offense and defensive. I think that is a testament to how great of a player she is.”

At the Ponitac Tournament (Sept.

12), the senior outside hitter broke two hitting records: attack attempts held by her sister, Kendall Korte (1,727); and kills held by Tory Rezin (727). At the end of the tournament, Korte had 821 kills.

Korte recorded 23 more kills Tuesday to increase her career total to 844 kills. She had a .487 hitting percentage and added three solo blocks, one block assist and seven digs.

After losing to Breese Mater Dei, the Indians (10-5) turned around to win the silver division of the Edwardsville tournament and started a six-game win streak.

Minooka is one of two teams that remain undefeated in the Southwest Prairie with wins over Plainfield South, Plainfield North, Plainfield East and Oswego.

With each win, the Indians have shown they have improved in their first contact. They always had strong hitters, but having a consistent back row makes Minooka a top, if not the top team in the conference.

“We have really come together the last few weeks with our defensive components of the game,” Minooka coach Carrie Prosek said. “Our serve receive and blocking have been a big factor in our recent success. I was never worried about our offense, but you can’t have an offense without a solid serve receive and defense.”

This week, Minooka will face Oswego East and then Plainfield Central.

If Central and Minooka win both matches Tuesday, the two would face off Thursday as two undefeated conference teams.

CHICAGO – Tamika Catchings scored 27 points and Shenise Johnson added 22 to help the Indiana Fever beat the Sky, 100-89, in the decisive game of the Eastern Conference semifinals Monday.

Erlana Larkins added 18 points and Marissa Coleman had 17 for the third-seeded Fever, who won the series, 2-1, to advance to face top-seeded New York or fourth-seeded Washington. Those teams conclude their semifinal Tuesday in New York.

Bears’ film hard to watch Over the years, hundreds of you have inquired about how much fun my job must be or how much you’d love to be able to do it.

Eighty percent or 90 percent of the time, you’d be right.

But I just finished watching the Bears’ 48-23 loss to the Cardinals for the third time, filed all my notes, posted my final grades and put together my checklist of what each Bear must strive for to get better next week, and I have to tell you, this was one of those rare weekends when you really wouldn’t want my job.

The Bears were awful against Arizona and have real problems at every position on the field except running back, center and offensive tackle.

The only other exceptions are at placekicker and punter, where Robbie Gould and Patrick O’Donnell are really good, and Thomas Gafford has been fine as the long snapper.

But even the kick coverage was painful to watch.

Of course, the lightning rod for Bears fans everywhere is Jay Cutler, but with the exception of the pick-six he threw on which he strained his hamstring and was knocked out of

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush the game, Cutler was almost flawless throwing the football, running it and in his decision making.

The interception clearly was a miscommunication between him and Martellus Bennett, and although we don’t know whom to blame, it wasn’t the usual Cutler brain fart.

He earned at worst a B when he was on the field, but Jimmy Clausen in relief was a disaster.

Clausen just doesn’t appear to have an NFL arm, and trying to run an offense in which Eddie Royal was probably the only legitimate NFL receiver on the field made his tape a horror flick.

Clausen and the Bears’ receiving corps were a D–.

Particularly disappointing was Marquess Wilson, who was targeted five times and managed only one catch for 10 yards because he just doesn’t get open.

The offensive line was a B–, actually pretty good in its

run blocking but occasionally struggling to pass protect.

Jermon Bushrod looks healthier, Will Montgomery clearly is a key to this group because of his knowledge of the offense, and Kyle Long was really good playing with one hand.

In fact, Long probably earned a B+ or A–, but that was balanced out by a C– for Vladimir Ducasse, who wasn’t awful but wasn’t very good.

The tight ends get an incomplete until we figure out whether Bennett blew the sight adjustment on the pick and whether the pass interference call on Zach Miller was justified.

It looked like a bad call to me.

The defensive front was better than in Week 1, particularly Pernell McPhee and Jared Allen, who were extremely active.

Jarvis Jenkins also was solid, but Will Sutton – who I think could be a star in a system that fits him – just isn’t big enough to handle an end in a 30 front.

It’s almost mind-boggling, however, when you look at the 48 points on the board and realize the Cardinals managed

only 300 yards of total offense.

I gave the defensive line and outside linebackers a B-.

Shea McClellin and Christian Jones just don’t make any plays inside and were at best a C. Antrel Rolle was more active than in Week 1, and Adrian Amos isn’t bad. Amos isn’t physical enough to make plays in the box and has to continue to improve overall, but he doesn’t look out of place. They were a B–.

The biggest problem on the field, of course, is cornerback.

Kyle Fuller failed Sunday and ended up a spectator in the fourth quarter, and Alan Ball wasn’t any better.

They both got Fs, and the other corners were best-case Ds. It also is fair to point out that as well coached as the Bears looked against the Packers, they didn’t appear well prepared for Arizona, and John Fox and company should be looking in the mirror this week as well as at the tape.

LAKE FOREST – John Fox said Monday tests revealed Bears quarterback Jay Cutler has a strained hamstring, but wouldn’t put a timetable on Cutler’s return.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Cutler will miss “at least” the next two weeks, which includes games in Seattle and at home against the Raiders. Cutler suffered the injury trying to make a tackle after he threw an interception in the second quarter, which was returned for a touchdown in the Bears’ 48-23 loss.

“I think any time it’s not real severe, I think it’s good news,” Fox said. “We’ll just evaluate it going forward, we have game-planning tonight for Seattle and tomorrow and players are back in on Wednesday.”

The Bears will have to release an injury report Wednesday, which is when Fox said they’ll have more information about Cutler’s injury. When asked about Cutler’s chances to practice Wednesday, Fox responded, “I don’t know. Is it going to be heads or tails Sunday?

I don’t know.”

Before the injury, Cutler had completed all eight of his passes, including 48-yard touchdown. Jimmy Clausen replaced Cutler and was 14 of 23 for 121 yards and an interception.

Frustrated defense: Jared Allen said he felt a “sense of frustration” and “a sense of urgency” from his teammates Monday at Halas Hall, but some hope after watching the tape from Sunday’s loss to the Cardinals.

“I think it’s all correctable.”

Allen said after pointing out that penalties, third-down defense and red-zone efficiency were issues again. “There’s nothing like a sense of panic or a woe is us or the sky is falling.

It’s ‘quit doing dumb stuff and get it corrected’. It’s all teachable. And then it’s just finding ways to make more plays.”

Foltynewicz has rib surgery The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Atlanta Braves pitcher Mike Foltynewicz has had surgery to remove half a rib after being hospitalized because of blood clots in his right arm.

The team said Foltynewicz is expected to be released from the hospital Thursday and will continue a treatment of blood thinners for at least six weeks.

Foltynewicz, a 2010 Minooka High School graduate, had the front part of his first rib removed Monday in a procedure performed at Wellstar Kennestone Hospital in Marietta, Georgia. The Braves were in New York to play the Mets.

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Alex Cobb had a similar operation in 2011.

The opener was a makeup of a May 27 rainout.

Adam Eaton singled in Carlos Sanchez in the third, and Sanchez homered in the sixth against Kyle Ryan (2-4), who allowed six hits in seven innings.

Monday’s losses guaranteed the Tigers, who entered the season expecting to contend for a fifth straight AL Central title, will finish no better than .500. It will be just the third nonwinning season since the club’s run to the 2006 World Series.

Orthopedic group in Japan tours Crest Hill practice

REST HILL – Advanced Physicians in Crest Hill see about 50 patients a day, said Scott Racz, a physical therapist from the practice’s Willowbrook office.

Contrast that to Matsushita Orthopedics in Japan, which sees 230 patients a day. The reason for the volume, said Dr. Yasushi Matsushita, who runs Matsushita Orthopedics, is that only 20 minutes of physical therapy treatment is reimbursable.

“We need many patients,” Matsushita said.

In June, Advanced Physicians received a letter from Matsushita asking if he and Sayaka Mori could visit the Crest Hill office – Advanced Physicians has seven locations in the Chicago area – Sept. 21 to learn more about the clinic and how it operates, said Marc O’Neal, orthopedic clinical specialist.

Mori had personal experience with Advanced Physicians, which is why she asked Matsushita to contact this practice. Mori said she studied athletic training at Western Illinois University in Macomb and physical therapy assistance at Morton College in Cicero.

While attending Morton, Mori did her clinical rotations with Advanced Physicians.

She worked mostly in the Joliet office, but had occasionally worked in the Crest Hill office as well. When she finished her education, Mori returned to Japan to work for Matsushita Orthopedics as an athletic trainer.

“We don’t have physical therapy assistants in Japan,” Mori said.

During their communication when scheduling the visit, O’Neal learned that Matsushita wished to observe Advanced Physician’s multi-disciplinary approach to outpatient orthopedics, with an eye toward patient improvement and enhancement of knowledge and skills.

O’Neal said he also wondered how treatment is decided in Japan. Often in the United States, O’Neal said, insurance companies dictate and control what kind, how often and for how long.

“I’m very naive when it comes to their reimbursement structure,” O’Neal said.

A learning experience for all

During the visit, Racz stepped in for O’Neal – who

could not be present – to lead the tour and answer Matsushita’s and Mori’s questions.

Mori noted both Advanced Physicians and Matsushita Orthopedics are similar in setting, although the physical space at Matsushita Orthopedics is somewhat smaller. Both offer similar services and technology. However, staffing is a bit different.

Matsushita Orthopedics has seven physical therapists, two athletic trainers including Mori, four technicians and three to four nurses. Advanced Physicians has a medical doctor, a physical therapist, two physical therapist assistants, one to three technicians and a chiropractor – as well as directors for operations and marketing.

In addition, Matsushita Orthopedics only schedules about half of its appointments and even then, Mori said, patients can expect to wait. The remainder of patients are walk-ins.

“Almost like a busy restau-

rant here,” Racz said with a smile.

Such a system also means that if a patient needs physical therapy three times a week, that patient might see three different physical therapists.

Although everyone is qualified, there is a downside.

“Everyone [does] physical therapy a different way,” Mori said.

How that therapy is determined also is different. At Advanced Physicians, Racz said, the patient’s doctor writes the order for physical therapy – how much and how often.

But the physical therapist can request more or less therapy, based on the patient’s needs and response.

“I control the plan of care,” Racz said.

In Japan, that control belongs to the doctor ordering the treatment. Furthermore, a medical doctor must always be on-site during physical therapy, Mori said. At Matsushita Orthopedics, if Matsushita is

too ill to work, he must find a replacement.

“No medical doctor, no rehab,” Mori said.

In addition, the universal health care system in Japan requires the doctor re-evaluates each patient every two to three weeks before further therapy is administered, Matsushita said.

Of the 230 patients Matsushita Orthopedics serves each day, Matsushita said, about 130 receive physical therapy and 100 see just him. For example, Matsushita said he has some patients with osteoporosis who don’t require physical therapy, just management of the condition.

O’Neal felt the visit was an amazing opportunity – for both practices – to see how health care is delivered around the world, especially since policies and procedures are ever-changing and evolving.

“I think if you’re complacent in the way you run your practice,” O’Neal said, “you’re out of it tomorrow.”

Too true; but sometimes bridge requires you to judge the ability of your opponents.

If they are near-beginners, you probably will not have to be as tough as when they are capable. However, most of the time, you should try to find the best bids and plays, regardless of the opposition’s expertise.

In this deal, for example, take the West hand. You open one spade, but the opponents push into four hearts.

You lead the spade king. Partner overtakes it with his ace and returns the spade two, declarer following both times.

What would you do next?

South is strong enough for a threeheart bid on the first round, which in the balancing seat is intermediate, showing some 14-16 points. However, most players would want a stronger suit.

You should realize that declarer, if paying any attention, knows that you have the heart king. Your partner did not respond to your one-spade opening and has already produced four points in the spade ace.

So, a skillful South will play to drop your heart king and get lucky. You have just one chance.

Cash the club ace (necessary if declarer had a singleton club and could make a loser-on-loser play) before leading your lowest spade – then hope partner thinks to ruff with his heart eight to force a trump promotion.

that does not like to eat fish, and since heart disease runs in your family, I’d advise you to take fish oil supplements.

The heart benefits of fish and of fish oil supplements appear to be mainly on reducing the risk of sudden death. The evidence is not as strong that fish and fish oil reduce the risk of other heart conditions, like angina or heart attacks.

I think that is probably because they are potent in reducing the heart rhythm disorders that can suddenly cause the heart to stop beating.

Typical over-thecounter fish oil supplements contain eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) plus docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the omega-3s found in fish. Many authorities recommend that if you already have heart disease or high levels of triglycerides, you should discuss with your doctor taking 3,000 milligrams of fish oil capsules per day. If you have elevated triglycerides, your doctor may recommend a higher dose (or some other treatment to lower triglycerides).

As beneficial as fish oil capsules may be, I prefer to get nutrients from foods rather than supplements.

That’s because whole foods often have other nutrients that may also be good for your health. Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines are especially good food sources of omega-3s. I eat fish at least once or twice a week -- but that’s not hard because I love fish!

Should I eat fish, or take fish oil supplements?

Dear Reader: Eating fish regularly reduces a person’s risk of sudden death from heart disease.

It’s also brain-healthy.

For that reason, I and most doctors recommend a regular diet of fish for people who have heart disease. And also for people like you where heart disease runs in the family.

Fish oils are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, a kind of “healthy fat.” The protective effect of omega-3 fatty acids may stem from several different effects they have on the body. They keep platelets from forming clots in the blood. They help reduce blood pressure. They raise HDL, the so-called “good cholesterol.” They lower levels of another kind of fat linked to heart disease and strokes: triglycerides. Probably most important, they seem to prevent lethal heart-rhythm disorders from developing.

So since heart disease is such a common problem, I recommend that most people have at least two servings per week of oily fish. That’s true even if they don’t have heart disease or family members with heart disease.

I can’t be as certain about the value of taking fish oil supplements.

The evidence that fish oils are heart-healthy comes mainly from studies of eating fish, not from swallowing fish oil capsules. However, there is reasonably strong evidence that fish oil supplements may reduce the risk of sudden death from heart disease. And they have no significant side effects.

Dear Abby: I have a very close cousin (and friend) who is in a toxic relationship with a man who breaks up with her repeatedly, manipulates and abuses her emotionally, and probably cheats.

It has made me sad to see her go through the same pattern with him for so many years.

They were supposed to be married soon, but are having the same problems again.

She’s unsure what steps to take, even though family and friends are advising her against marrying him. I don’t support the idea either, but I don’t want to create a rift with my cousin.
