Main Street Looking West – Mokena In the early 1830s, John McGovney and Matthew Van Horne, along with others, settled along the timber ridge of Hickory Creek, a small tributary of the Des Plaines River.

Within a few years, the community prospered and a post office was established in 1837, with L. M. Clayes as postmaster. The name of the post Photo provided by Robert Horras and the Local History Project’s digital collections office was Chelsea.

As with other communities in Illinois, the placing of a railroad line through the area helped to reshape the growing settlement. In 1852, the Chicago & Rock Island Railroad was built through Frankfort Township, connecting Joliet with Chicago. The same year, Allen Denny began plotting of the town of Mokena. The original plot included 13 lots on what now is Front Street from present Wolf Road to Mokena Street and six lots from Mokena Street to Division.

Within a year, Mokena received a post office, and Warren Knapp served as the first postmaster. Ozias McGovney was the first justice of the peace in the village, a position he had for nearly 21 years.

Annual Sharefest allows neighbors to give, receive

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent NEW LENOX – The last thing Doug and Jody Leonard expected to bring home from Saturday’s Sharefest was a tabby kitten – but that’s exactly what their 8-year-old twin daughters took home in a neat white box that morning.

The New Lenox family had been thinking about getting another kitten, however, after an unfortunate incident with one at home.

“Because mine died,” Callie said when asked why they got a cat at the fest.

“His name is Boston,” Sophie said of the new kitty.

“He’s probably going to sleep in our room with us.”

“We came for books,” Jody Leonard said with a laugh.

Doug Leonard joked that he tried to run away when he saw the pet display. The parents said this was the first year they had attended the event, and they thought it was a nice way for the community to share with each other.

Sharefest is an annual event started nine years ago

by New Lenox resident Gary Cheney, who as a Christian, said it’s all about love.

“We have a commitment to love our neighbors,” Cheney said. “This is a vehicle that allows people to plug in and go out and do that.

People can give, people can receive.”

The giving involves hundreds of people who donate money, purchase items or dig through their closets, drawers and attics to find items to give. The donations are stored at local facilities, such as in the basement of Standard Bank, until the volunteers transport it all to the Spencer School campus in New Lenox.

trucks of fresh produce, such as watermelons and corn, to be given away. There also were crates of noodles, beverages, soup and other pack-

aged food items.

Inside the school were rows and rows of clothes, household items, baby goods, books and a lot more.

Some of the members of Girl Scout Troop 273 helped organize the books. They stayed for the fest and helped people find the books they might have been looking for.

Anika Svancarek, 13, was one of them and said they were using the hours to go toward their Silver Awards.

“We sorted books, put them in boxes, loaded them and unloaded them and separated them,” she said. “We have a lot of them. We’ve helped people carry giant boxes of books out to their car. ... They’re actually going pretty fast.”

The donations and the event keep getting bigger every year, according to vol-

unteer Arlene McKenna of Mokena.

“It’s fantastic,” McKenna said of how the event was going this year. “I think they’re especially here for clothes and shoes. And baby stuff.

We can’t get enough baby stuff. The household things don’t go as quick.”

Also at the fest were free legal advice, free haircuts, a blood drive and a health and safety fair. Off campus were work days at the Will County Forest Preserve and on homes of area seniors, veterans and those in need.

Physicians from Silver Cross Hospital and Presence Saint Joseph’s presented lectures, as well.

Lincoln-Way D-210 board prepares to question auditors

NEW LENOX – As Lincoln-Way High School District 210 board members gear up for questioning a longtime district auditor this week, many parents and residents are searching for answers surrounding the district’s poor finances and decision to close North High School.

Board members plan on questioning auditor Mulcahy, Pauritsch, Salvador & Co. on Thursday, where they may also approve the fiscal 2016 budget.

Board member Christopher McFadden – who joined the board this year – criticized the auditors in a board memo and recommended running an independent audit of expenses.

Since the past summer, parents and residents – many of them associated with Lincoln-Way Area Taxpayers Unite – have sent a flurry of Freedom of Information Act requests to the district and tried to speak with officials to investigate if closing North was the right decision and if money was mismanaged.

“We trusted that our money was being managed appropriately and I think now we are learning it has not been and people are angrier and angrier every day,” said Liz Sands, a Tinley Park resident and North parent.

Sands said there are many residents who don’t believe a school needed to close this year. They don’t believe the decision was thoroughly researched and residents are gathering budget information for each academic building, she said.

Todd Velky, another North parent, said the “rush to close a school” has made the community stand up. He said one goal of skeptical residents is not to divide others but to help them see that district financial problems are a taxpayer issue across Lincoln-Way. “Lincoln-Way is supposed to be modeled as one of the best [school districts] in Illinois,” Velky said. “How it went from the best to one of the worst is why we’re trying to figure this out.”

District officials have said in the past that a poor economy and decreasing state funding over the years led to Lincoln-Way’s status on the state’s financial watch list. Lower-than-expected enrollment – projections of increased home building led to the construction in the late 2000s of North and West to accommodate the expected

growth – also impacted the district.

At a Sept. 9 budget hearing, Board Member Christine Glatz said in response to a question on past budgets that the past administration’s accounting practices were “not very strong.”

She said Sept. 14 that she didn’t phrase what she said at the hearing eloquently, saying her intent was “simply to state we have room for improvement.”

“This is not a blame game,” said Glatz, who’s been on the board since 1993. “My purpose in saying that wasn’t to blame. Going through everything we have been going through, there is opportunity for us to do better.”

She said she should have asked more questions about the budget in the past. When asked about the budget process under former Superintendent Lawrence Wyllie, she said it was thorough and not “too dissimilar to what it is now.”

She had no specific examples of how the budget process was different under Wyllie or current Superintendent Scott Tingley.

Messages to board members Christopher Kosel and Arvid Johnson – who were on the board under Wyllie’s administration – were not immediately returned. Board member Dee Molinare directed questions to Board President Kevin Molloy and District Spokeswoman Abby Milone.

Tingley said budgets were passed by the board at the start of the fiscal year based on best-case scenarios, but deficits were reported to the state after the fiscal year closeout.

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com ROCKDALE – Solar power has come to Rockdale Elementary School.

In August, school staff added 1.8-kilowatt solar panels to the roof to reduce electricity consumption with clean, renewable energy fuel that is free, courtesy of the sun.

Purchase and installation of the solar panels were made possible by grants totaling $10,000 to power not only the school, but the students’ science and technology education.

“This is kind of a stepping stone to not only learning through books but having [the solar panels] up on the roof collecting data. The kids are going to compare information with other schools and look at practical applications,” said Matt Olson, a Rockdale teacher who secured the grants.

Over the summer, the school was awarded $7,000 from the Clean Energy Community Foundation and $3,000 from EcoLab’s Visions For Learning to install the solar panel system. Olson said the school is in the process of adding wind turbines to the panels next spring after applying for grants.

Since the program’s launch in 2006, the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation has

awarded $2.6 million in grants to 280 schools to support the installation of the one kilowatt solar photovoltaic systems, school officials said.

The foundation was established in 1999 with a $225 million endowment provided

by ComEd. The foundation invests in clean energy development and land preservation efforts, working with communities and residents to improve environmental quality statewide, according to its website.

The solar panel system provides immediate data on the electricity generated so students can log onto the Illinois Solar School website and analyze it, school officials said. The elementary school is now part of the Illinois Solar Schools program.

“We’re just really excited that we got funding now,” Principal Tammy Hafner said.

“We want to explore STEM learning, especially with middle-schoolers.”

She said Olson has been key in applying for grants since he became an elementary and middle school science teacher last year.

“He’s been amazing, he is very visionary. … He has the vision and the drive and he is the one going out to find different sources,” Hafner said.

Joliet chamber set to hold Barnyard Bash on Saturday

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – When is a barnyard like a mansion?

On Saturday, when the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry holds “Boots & BBQ: The Barnyard Bash” at the Jacob Henry Mansion Estate.

The chamber hopes to strike a festive chord with the event, created in light of the success of its New Orleans North, a summer version of Mardi Gras.

“We did the big summer event, and everybody kept saying let’s do something in the fall,” Chamber President Mary Jaworski said.

The last New Orleans North drew more than 4,000 people.

“This is much smaller,” Jaworski said.

The chamber is hoping for 400 to 500 people at Boots & BBQ. “It is just a really fun event that we worked with [Jacob Henry Mansion] on,” Jaworski said. “We said we can create this giant barnyard, and we did. We have 150 bales of straw coming in. ... We tried to be as authentic as we can, up to using the triangle to call people to dinner.”

It’s an informal event with blue jeans preferred.

The party will include a mechanical bull. There will be fire pits, a hay rack valet, couches created from the bales of straw and lawn games.

The evening will include dinner and dancing, with music provided by The Righteous Hillbillies.

Dinner will be a barbecue

buffet. There will be a themed drink menu sponsored by the Jacob Henry Mansion Estate.

Schneider Port Logistics will serve as presenting sponsor for the event. CarCare Collision Centers will sponsor the entertainment.

Boots & BBQ will be 6 to 11 p.m. The Jacob Henry Mansion Estate is at 15 S. Richards St. The event is for those 21 and older.

Tickets are $35, which covers admission, dinner, entertainment and mechanical bull rides. Tickets can be reserved for a table of 10 at $350. A table of 10 with fire pit is available for $500. Tickets must be bought in advance, and will not be sold at the door.

SHOREWOOD – Secretary of State Jesse White will bring his Mobile Driver Services Unit to the Troy Township Community Center on Oct. 27.

The Community Center is at 25448 Seil Road in Shorewood.

Illinois residents will be able to renew their driver’s licenses, obtain duplicate or corrected licenses and obtain Illinois identification cards between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., according to a news release from the township.

A Rules of the Road Review Course also will be held from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The review course combines an explanation of safe driving techniques, Illinois driving laws and a practice written exam.

By Denise Freese With all the features available on new cars and trucks these days, it’s hard to know which are worth paying extra for and which ones you can do without. When considering 2WD (two-wheel drive), 4WD (four-wheel drive, or 4X4), or AWD (all-wheel drive), your decision is best made when taking into account your budget and how you will use your vehicle.

Traditional 4WD is most often used for off-roading capabilities. This system splits power between the front and rear axles, so that maximum power goes evenly to each wheel. This causes each wheel to turn at the same speed, which doesn’t allow for smooth turning capabilities, as the inside wheel can lose traction and spin freely.

A newer 4WD system is more adaptable to regular driving, as most are only on when the driver activates it. This provides a choice between using 4WD at low speed in snow or

mud, or the more comfortable regular 2WD in normal conditions. While 4WD offers great traction for off-roading and can be turned off to improve fuel economy, it can’t be used in all conditions or at all speeds, is more expensive than 2WD, and adds weight to vehicles.

AWD is similar to 4WD, except that it’s on all the time.

Computers utilize sensors on each wheel to monitor traction, wheel speed, and other data continuously. The computer sends power to each wheel depending on which has the most grip. This “torque vectoring” has provided major improvements in handling and driving in poor weather. It also gives sportier handling and traction to many different models. However, it’s not as effective in an off-road environment and reduces fuel efficiency.

For winter driving like we experience in Chicagoland, AWD systems are both convenient and useful. But for off-roading capabilities, 4WD is your best bet.

Minooka ‘painted blue’ in show of support for police

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – The streets of Minooka were lined Saturday with the color blue, while fences and trees around the police station on the corner of Wabena and McEvilly roads were filled with banners, balloons and ribbons – all to show support to the Minooka Police Department.

Laura Reed created an event for Saturday on Facebook called “Paint Minooka BLUE” at the Minooka Community Center, where volunteers cut blue plastic tablecloths into strips, blew up balloons and created posters to don the streets with blue in response to the new Sept. 19 National Thank a Police Officer Day. “I saw an idea online where people were doing this in other communities, and with the recent events going on with the police, I wanted to do something,” Reed said. “This is a safe town, and it seems like the police can’t do anything without threats, so it’s time to start showing support.”

What Reed was seeing online was a part of the Illinois Auxiliary-Wives Behind the Badge campaign called Paint Illinois Blue.

There have been 83 deaths of law enforcement officers in the line of duty in 2015, according to a news release from the group. The organization wishes to serve as a positive voice for all law enforcement in communities across the nation with events like Paint Illinois Blue.

The nonprofit began selling #isupportblue T-shirts for $15 at pop-up locations throughout the state, offering pictures to be taken while wearing the shirts to raise funds to buy lunches for police officers.

“This fundraiser took off more than we expected. Our goal was 50 shirts, or $750, and the last time I checked we had sold over $9,000 in shirts,” said Candace Battung, local Illinois Auxiliary-Wives Behind the Badge volunteer.

“The Minooka 201 School District and local McDonald’s also changed their signs to support the cause.”

With the statewide awareness, Reed decided to piggyback on the group’s efforts by showing similar support in Minooka. After the ribbons were cut and signs were made, the volunteers hit the town Saturday to tie bows on poles and trees, as well as put up signs and balloons.

“I had a great-grandpa who was an officer for the Chicago Police Department for 33 years,” Dylan Blough said.

He said he was taking part because he wants police “to know they are important and that we are behind them.”

outside of the police department, Lydia Reed, 12, said she has heard stories on the news “and I don’t think what is going on is right. I’m glad my mom wanted to do something about it and I am glad I could help.”

Sgt. Gary Fiedler walked over from his patrol car to thank the crew for decorating and showing support.

“I think society is sick of what a small minority is doing. They see it as an insult to society as a whole. I know we get a bad rap sometimes, but it’s nice to see that there are people out there who do appreciate us,” Fiedler said.

Reed spent part of Sunday at the Minooka Community Picnic at Lions Park, where she passed out blue ribbons, banners and cards for people to take home and distribute to thank an officer.

Shorewood’s Makayla Gorka fully intends to compete in taekwondo sparring in the Summer Olympics, either in 2020 or 2024.

While it sounds like a long way off, Gorka is preparing by dedicating most of her free time perfecting her kicks, blocks, checks and moves.

A senior at Joliet West High School, Gorka began martial arts when she was 7, studying under Master Kyung Mun, owner of Mun’s Korean Martial Arts in Shorewood, from the start.

Gorka had taken a couple of sparring classes when she was 12 and Mun urged her to compete in a local tournament.

She took second place.

“All I did was check, kick and kick the entire round,” she said.

Mun himself was a sparring champion in Korea during his high school and university years.

Gorka, a second degree black belt in taekwondo, has developed her skills to the point of competing in state and national tournaments. At 14, she took second place in state.

In July of this year, Gorka competed at nationals in Texas and took third place.

In August she won the Gold medal in her weight/age class at the Costa Rica Open, competing with the Illinois State team (Illinois Taekwondo State Association).

Gorka travels all over the globe for the opportunity to compete; she’ been in places such as Trinidad in the Carib-

bean and Mexico. She’ll next compete in the Toronto Open.

She’s competed against women from all over the world. While the rules are the same for every country, Gorka said, they may be taught different sparring techniques.

“So you have to really pay attention,” she said.

When asked what makes her want to compete, Gorka said it’s exciting.

JOLIET – Will County Board members representing Homer Glen, Lockport and New Lenox are inviting residents to learn more about county initiatives from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Chesdan’s Pizzeria in Homer Glen.

Complimentary pizza and drinks will be served, and residents will have the opportunity to ask questions and get to know their elected officials, according to a news release from the county.

One topic board members will address is the county’s plans to build a new courthouse in downtown Joliet. The current courthouse was built in 1969 when the county’s population was 250,000; today, the county has nearly 700,000 residents.

and do not meet the minimum standards for safety and security as set by the Illinois Supreme Court, county officials say.

Road projects such as the 143rd Street corridor also will be discussed. The corridor project extends three miles from State Street east to Golden Oak Drive. The project includes complete reconstruction of the two lane roadway to a five lane with curbs and gutters, an enclosed drainage system, upgraded and new traffic signals at various intersections and other additions. The total cost is approximately $15 million for design, right-of-way acquisition, and construction. The entire corridor is expected to be completed by 2020.

A great, strong woman

It’s a beautiful legacy of care and service that began with the example of Catherine Schwartz’s stepmother – who was a nurse – and continued through her daughters and one granddaughter.

Cathy Mutz of Channahon, Catherine’s daughter and a nurse at St. Edward Hospital in Naperville, believes her mother’s desire to serve originated from a devastating tornado in southern Illinois.

Catherine was about 5 years old and taking a nap on a sleeping porch when the tornado struck. Catherine’s father threw himself on top of her, and an icebox landed on him.

The icebox shielded them and kept them alive, Cathy said.

“There’s a picture in a Chicago newspaper of my mom sitting amongst the rubble,”

Cathy said. “It says, ‘Catherine Ragsdale, who narrowly escapes death, returns to her home to look for her toys.’ ” When the tornado struck, Catherine’s mother, the town’s postmaster, was trying to get home to her family, Cathy added. She survived the tornado but died of unrelated causes when Catherine was 12.

All these experiences spoke to Catherine.

“She felt she was saved for a reason,” Cathy said.

During her nursing career, Catherine, formerly of Crest Hill, served in a field military hospital outside London during World War II, and then worked at Silver Cross Hospital for 30 years, first in the emergency department and then as the founder and director of the hospital’s employee health services, Cathy said.

“She did wonderful things, but she was always very humble and quiet,” Melanie said.

When Melanie’s Girl Scout troop needed a leader, Catherine stepped up. A Cubs fan, Catherine also educated herself on soccer and football so she could attend her grandsons’ games and discuss those sports with them.

“She expanded her interests to meet their interests,” Melanie said.

Rowena “Moe” Schwartz of Texas, an oncologist pharmacist, credited her mother for inspiring every good quality in her, from her career choices to the importance of speaking up on the job when something is wrong.

“She taught me how to go beyond what you think you should do, to do what’s best

for people,” Moe said.

By the time Catherine’s daughter, Sarah Bibian of Channahon and now a nurse in the neurology unit at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, was in nursing school, Catherine was having memory issues, Sarah said.

Nevertheless, Catherine knew the path Sarah had chosen and was proud of her, Sarah said. A collage representing the four generations of nurses in Catherine’s family hung in Catherine’s room, symbolic of the life Catherine valued, and the one that inspired Sarah.

“She was just a great, strong woman,” Sarah said.

Catherine was 94 when she died April 17.

Jackie Collins, novelist of the rich and scandalous, dies

By ANDREW DALTON The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – The novels of Jackie Collins dramatized the lives of the most elite people and places, but they were read by everyone, everywhere – from airports to beaches to, sometimes, under the covers with a flashlight to hide from disapproving parents and partners.

Collins, whose books like “Hollywood Wives” were as brazenly sexual as they were proudly pulpy, sold hundreds of millions of novels in dozens of countries, and it led to a level of wealth, celebrity and glamour that in many ways surpassed her own characters, and arguably matched that of her older sister, “Dynasty” actress Joan Collins.

Collins died at age 77 of breast cancer in Los Angeles, her publicist Melody Korenbrot said.

Collins’ tales of sex, glamour, power and more sex were a forerunner to the culture of “Desperate Housewives” and “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills.” Her books provided at first more than some wanted to hear, but she became the kind of author from whom readers could never get enough, providing forbidden fodder for housewives and for teenagers raiding their parents’ bookshelves.

“As a writer, you can never think about who is going to read your books. Is it going to be my mom? My children? A lot of people say to me, ‘Oh, I read your books under a cover with a flashlight when I was really young and I learned everything I know about sex from you.’ ” She was born Jacqueline Jill Collins in London in 1937, the daughter of a theatrical agent and a dance teacher.

Her first novel, “The World is Full of Married Men,” was a story of sex and show business set in “Swinging London”

in the mid-1960s. It came out in 1968 and became a scandalous best-seller, banned in Australia and condemned by romance writer Barbara Cartland.

“Barbara Cartland said to me, ‘Oh, Miss Collins, your books are filthy and disgusting and you are responsible for all the perverts in England,’ ” Collins told Porter Magazine in 2014. “I pause for a few moments and said, ‘Thank you.’ ” Collins followed in the 1970s with books like “The World is Full of Divorced Women” and “Lovers & Gamblers.”

It came at the same time that her sister hit the height of her own fame on “Dynasty.”

“Dynasty” producer Aaron Spelling would also produce the 1985 hit TV miniseries of “Hollywood Wives,” which featured Candice Bergen, Angie Dickinson and Suzanne Somers, among others.

It led to follow-ups like “Hollywood Husbands” (1986), “Hollywood Kids” (1984) and “Hollywood Wives: The New Generation” (2001).

The books made Jackie Collins a celebrity in her own right, and she loved the part, looking, living and behaving more like an actress than an author. In many ways, her own persona was her greatest character.

Collins embraced Twitter in her later years, and she loved the engagement with her over 150,000 followers.

“I love tweeting. I have so much fun with my fans,” she told the AP in 2011. “I’ve asked them for reviews. I answer people’s questions. Sometimes I’ll do a little survey and say, ‘Who is hot this week?’ “ Many were using Twitter to mourn her Saturday night, including Oprah Winfrey, who Tweeted “RIP Jackie Collins. I always loved our interviews.”

Larry King Tweeted that Collins was a “true talent, a

beautiful being and a dear friend.”

Collins’ books didn’t stick strictly to Hollywood. She penned a series of mafia novels documenting the lives of the Santangelo family, focusing on its patriarch Gino and his daughter Lucky. She wrote nine novels based on the family that included her last, “The Santangelos,” published this year.

Collins told People magazine, which first reported her death Saturday, in her final interview Sept. 14 that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer over six years ago, but she had chosen to keep the news among family, confiding mainly in her three daughters, 54-year-old Tracy, 48-year-old Tiffany and 46-year-old Rory.

A family statement called Collins “a true inspiration, a trailblazer for women in fiction and a creative force. She will live on through her characters but we already miss her beyond words.”

Collins was married twice, the second time to art gallery and nightclub owner Oscar Lerman in 1965. Lerman died in 1992. She was then engaged to Los Angeles businessman Frank Calcagnini, who died in 1998.

Asked by the AP in 2011 if she was dating anyone, Collins said “I have a man for every occasion.”

Illinois districts back Rauner plan to undo school mandates

CHICAGO – Illinois school districts have a new ally in Gov. Bruce Rauner as they try to eliminate state mandates that they say drive up costs and sometimes force them to lay off reading instructors to hire physical education teachers.

The Republican is pushing relief from so-called unfunded mandates – lawmaker directives that often cost districts money – as part of a larger proposal to freeze property taxes, curb the influence of public-worker unions and overhaul the state’s school-funding formula. In a letter to legislators on Thursday, Rauner said mandate relief could save districts statewide more than $200 million annually, helping to offset the loss of funding from a property tax freeze and bringing the kind of “structural reform” he says Illinois needs.

But getting rid of the mandates has been a politically difficult task, and the effort isn’t likely to be any easier with the General Assembly deeply divided over the state budget and Rauner’s legislative agenda.

Emanuel’s budget to put 319 more police on the street

CHICAGO – With homicides climbing again after having fallen for two years, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s 2016 budget will include a plan to hire civilians to take more than 300 police desk jobs so the officers there now can hit the streets.

Emanuel’s office did not say Sunday just how much money the plan will cost, but said the civilian employees will work as crossing guard supervisors, nurses, freedom of open information officers and other positions that

“While we have made important strides to refocus our resources in the past four years, there are still a number of highly trained police officers doing administrative work,” the mayor said in a statement. “So we asked a simple question of officers filling administrative roles: Do you need a gun, a star and arrest powers to do your job?”

The plan to reassign 319 officers marks the latest effort to find more police officers to patrol some of the city’s most dangerous neighborhoods.

Emanuel plans to introduce the budget on Tuesday.

Activists say hunger strike over Chicago school has ended

CHICAGO – Activists have announced the end of a 34-day hunger strike over the fate of a Chicago neighborhood school,

an effort that garnered national headlines when supporters disrupted public budget hearings held by Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

About a dozen activists went without solid foods over the plans for Walter H. Dyett High School, which was once slated for a phased-out closure. Officials with the nation’s third-largest school district had cited poor performance and declining enrollment, but later said they’d consider proposals to reopen it. Earlier this month Chicago Public Schools CEO Forrest Claypool announced it would reopen as an arts-focused school.

However, the activists, who wanted a community partnership for a green technology school, said they weren’t happy and continued their strike. They said their efforts were sparked by what they considered racial disparities – Dyett is located in the historically black Bronzeville

neighborhood – and that the decision-making for the school’s future wasn’t transparent or in line with what the area wanted.

Suspect in ’85 slaying of Chicago-area teen is arrested

WHEATON – Officials in DuPage County say they’ve arrested a man on charges that he sexually assaulted and stabbed to death a 15-year-old girl 30 years ago.

In a news release, Sheriff John Zaruba said 62-year-old Michael R. Jones was arrested on Sunday at his Champaign home.

Jones is accused in the slaying of Kristina Wesselman. On July 21, 1985, she was last seen walking along a path in unincorporated Glen Ellyn. When she didn’t return home, her mother reported her missing. The girl’s body was found in a field later that day.

Zaruba said the department’s cold case unit received new in-

formation in the case this month and searched Jones’ home Friday before arresting him Sunday.

Durbin, Bustos urge Rauner to release airport money

SPRINGFIELD – Two Democrats in Illinois’ congressional delegation are urging Gov. Bruce Rauner to release money they say the state pledged for improvements at Chicago Rockford International Airport.

Sen. Dick Durbin and Rep. Cheri Bustos issued a letter to the Republican governor asking him to release $16.3 million for a midfield improvement project.

Rauner and the Democrat-controlled Legislature haven’t agreed on a budget for the fiscal year which began July 1.

The airport project is under way and Congress is considering adding $2.5 million in federal money.

James Junior Minter, 26, is being held without bond in the shooting of his girlfriend, his infant son and a pastor who tried to intervene Sunday morning, according to Selma police Lt. Curtis Muhannad. The pastor has been identified as Earl Carswell.

Minter was arrested after he opened fire during church service at Oasis Tabernacle Church in East Selma, Alabama.

Witnesses told police that Minter entered the church and sat in the front row between his girlfriend and the baby, according to a statement released by the Selma Police Department. Minter then pulled out a handgun and started shooting, the statement said. The girlfriend, 24, fell to the ground, and Minter fired at her, striking her in the jaw and shoulder. The baby, a 1-month-old boy, was shot in the hand.

Carswell, 61, then grabbed Minter and was shot in the leg.

Members of the congregation helped subdue Minter and managed to wrest away his gun, according to police. Minter then ran out of the church.

“The only thing that separates women of color from anyone else is opportunity,” an emotional Davis said. “You cannot win Emmys with roles that are simply not there.”

Jon Stewart is gone from “The Daily Show” but not forgotten by Emmy voters, who gave the late-night show the best variety talk series award Sunday over another host who’s moved on, Stephen Colbert.

Hamlin recovers multiple times to win

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The weekend didn’t start out well for Denny Hamlin during Sunday’s myAFibRisk.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway.

But the 34-year old competitor for Joe Gibbs Racing couldn’t have asked for a better finish to his day as he won a restart with five laps remaining and then led the rest of the way to assure himself of a spot in the contender round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup, winning the myAFibRisk.com 400.

He started 29th after a poor practice showing Friday, but the team was encouraged by a much better performance in Saturday’s session. Then only two laps into Sunday’s race, Hamlin spun out and immediately fell one lap behind.

But he battled back to get into the mix at the end and took his initial lead from laps 240 to 243.

Although many of the leaders decided to pit for new tires during the last caution, Hamlin remained on the track and then went on to claim his second lead and also capture his first victory at the track.

“It feels great,” said Hamlin, who is recovering from a recent anterior cruciate ligament tear. “It was a great day for us. We came back from adversity and did a lot of great things throughout the day, with the exception of Lap 2. It was amazing that we were able to come back the way we were and do the things we were able to do.

“I knew we had a really fast car, but I didn’t think starting in the second row with old tires that we were going to have a chance like we were, but the opportunity came in turn one to make a move and we capitalized and our car took off.

Look at our finishes going into the Chase. Even though everyone else gets the headlines, we have been chipping away with some really good finishes here lately.”

After the early caution involving Hamlin, there were 116 laps of green flag racing, which were the most consecutive this season and two shy of

138, resulting in major damage which sent his car to the garage. When he returned on lap 195, he was 57 laps back.

On the subsequent restart, Jeff Gordon moved past Busch to grab his first lead. NASCAR reviewed the restart and ruled that Gordon hadn’t gone too fast, and he went on to hold the lead for 40 laps.

Taking the lead was a big deal for Gordon, who tied Ricky Rudd’s record with his 788th consecutive start. The veteran, who is retiring after this year, had only led for six laps in his previous 16 races.

Shortly after Gordon pitted on Lap 184, the fifth caution was called for debris.

On the restart at Lap 197, Kyle Busch moved past his brother, Kurt, to regain the lead. With 50 laps to go, the top eight drivers and 13 of the first 15 were those battling in the Chase.

Then on Lap 221, after good side-by-side racing in traffic, Kurt Busch passed his brother. Kyle Busch had led all but 100 laps at that time.

Edwards pitted with 30 laps left to start a stream of Chase leaders who did the same thing.

Not long after those pits concluded, Gordon moved past Kyle Busch into second place.

A caution was called with 10 laps left because of debris.

Kurt Busch, Gordon and Hamlin stayed on the track while many right behind them chose to pit in order to get new tires.

On the restart, Hamlin grabbed the lead despite the old tires and even though Edwards made a late pass of Kurt Busch, there was no real drama the rest of the way.

JOLIET – After an exciting Saturday evening which featured a one-two finish in the Xfinity Series race, Joe Gibbs Racing looked like it might be headed for a much different Sunday showing.

While Xfinity winner Kyle Busch was dominating throughout much of the myAFibRisk.com 400 at Chicagoland Speedway, teammates Denny Hamlin and Carl Edwards both fell a lap behind early on while Matt Kenseth struggled to get into the top 10 all afternoon.

But in the unpredictable world of NASCAR, things can change quite suddenly, and that’s what happened for JGR as the 267-lap competition wound down.

The two drivers who were still as far back as 23rd with 120 laps complete, Hamlin and Edwards, placed first and second while Saturday night’s runner-up, Kenseth, managed to finish fifth.

After holding the lead four times for a total of 121 laps and briefly battling with his brother Kurt for the top spot, Kyle Busch faltered in the late going and wound up settling for ninth place.

The good news for the team is that Hamlin assured himself of advancing to the next round of the Chase for the Sprint Cup by claiming the win. Also, JGR holds the top four spots in the points standings. Kenseth (2052) has the lead, followed by Hamlin (2050), Edwards (2049) and Kyle Busch (2049).

“I thought today was a total team effort,” said Gibbs, the Hall of Fame Washington Redskins coach that co-owns the team. “We had everything go against us really. The 11 car (Hamlin) had to start in the back because of our qualifying speed. We turn around and spun the car back there. We go down a lap. Fought hard all day to get that back. So it was just one thing after another.

“I appreciate Dave (winning crew chief Dave Rogers) keeping everybody together.

The road crew, the pit crew, the driver, engineers, everyone just stayed really composed. That’s what I’m most proud of today.

After moving into fifth place at Lap 240, Kenseth was back in 13th on Lap 255. But he moved to the top of the Chase points standings after working his way back to fifth place at the checkered flag.

“We really struggled,” Kenseth said. “We had probably a 15th-place car at best and barely hung onto the lead lap all day and got the good right line on the restart. I think I passed seven or eight of them in the first corner, another two or three the next set of corners. Somehow we wound up fifth today. We definitely finished way better than we deserved today.

“But that’s what you have to do in these things, you have to try to take your days and try to make them the best you can.

I’m happy for Denny. Been a few months since he’s been in victory lane. All of our cars had really good finishes today, so that’s the important side of it.”

By KRISTIN SHARP ksharp@shawmedia.com OSWEGO – No Southwest Prairie Conference team has found an answer for the Oswego football program in 30 straight games, and Minooka was the latest statistic in the Panthers’ win streak on Saturday night.

Oswego scored its first two touchdowns in an 11-second span and the night would only get worse for Minooka as the Panthers went on to win 42-7, handing the Indians their first loss of the season.

“Offensively, we didn’t play very well. We didn’t do the things we were supposed to do,” Minooka coach Paul Forsythe said. “We need to play better.

We’re 3-1. We’ve got a lot of work to do.

We’ll bounce back. We got punched in the chin a little bit and we need to learn from it.”

JOLIET – In complete contrast to last year’s 41-34, overtime shootout win by Plainfield South over Plainfield North, the two rivals put on a defensive clinic for 48 minutes.

With 4:05 left in the contest, quarterback Nick Deppe crashed in from five yards out for the only touchdown to give the Cougars a 6-3 Southwest Prairie Conference victory Saturday.

“It was an option-read play and I wasn’t going to be denied the end zone,” Deppe said. “I had made a number of mistakes tonight, and it really felt great to atone for them, with the game-winning touchdown.

Our great defense won this game for us. They were absolutely amazing, tonight.”

Indeed they were. Led by linebackers Nick and Jake Portz, Tyler Jensen and Jordan Eskridge and defensive back Danny Saracco, they

Now, the Bears might have to get by without their quarterback.

Cutler was injured trying to make a tackle after an interception, and the Bears fell to the Arizona Cardinals, 48-23, Sunday.

Cutler walked to the locker room after he was stiff-armed trying to take down Tony Jefferson on a 26-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the first half and did not return to the game. That put his status for next week’s game at Seattle – and beyond – in question.

“It takes a while to run tests.

Our medical people will inform me and then I will inform you,” coach John Fox said, when asked if he expects his quarterback to play again this season.

Cutler was not available for comment afterward.

Carson Palmer threw for four touchdowns, and the Cardinals pulled away in the second half for an easy victory.

Palmer connected with Larry Fitzgerald for three of his TDs, giving the quarterback seven in two games after returning last week against New Orleans from a torn ante-

Palmer was 17 of 24 with 185 yards to improve to 15-2 in his past 17 starts. Fitzgerald had 112 yards, and with those three TDs, he matched a career high he set against Philadelphia in the conference final seven years ago.

David Johnson returned the opening kickoff a club-record 108 yards and added a rushing TD, and Chris Johnson ran for 72 yards with Andre Ellington sidelined by a sprained right knee for the Cardinals (2-0).

And, coach Bruce Arians gained a measure of revenge after the Bears hired Marc Trestman over him in January 2013.

Cutler’s injury was the biggest development in a game that included several big plays and ended with the Bears (0-2) remaining winless under Fox. The seven touchdowns allowed tied the franchise record for the Bears, who had never given up 48 points in a home game. They also tied a club record with 170 penalty yards.

Cutler completed his first eight passes for 120 yards before getting picked off. He

threw a 48-yard touchdown to Josh Bellamy. But the injury on Jefferson’s interception return was another big blow for a team that was already missing its top receiver with Alshon Jeffery out because of a hamstring problem.

Now, the Bears could be missing their quarterback when they visit the defending NFC champion Seahawks.

That would likely mean a start for Jimmy Clausen, who was 14 of 23 for 121 yards after Cutler went down.

“You’ve just got to keep pushing forward,” Clausen

said. “I felt the air was deflated a little bit, but guys did a great job just trying to (say) ‘let’s go, let’s go, let’s go’ and pick up the tempo a little bit, try to move the chains.”

Clausen’s long pass on the opening drive of the second half got picked off by Patrick Peterson, leading to a 28-yard touchdown catch by Fitzgerald that made it 35-20. David Johnson added a 13-yard scoring run to make it a 22-point game, sending Arizona to a lopsided victory after a wild first half.

Along with Johnson’s team record return on the game’s opening kickoff, there were two long pass-interference penalties by the Bears’ Kyle Fuller and Alan Ball that led to touchdowns for the Cardinals. The Bears also got a pair of field goals in the final minute of the half because of a fumble recovery on a punt and an interception by Jared Allen.

All that was overshadowed

by Cutler’s injury.

Cubs fall to Cardinals The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – The odds of the Cubs overtaking first-place St. Louis in the NL Central were diminished Sunday, but the Cubs’ confidence wasn’t.

And the Cubs might have dealt the Cardinals a big blow – even in losing.

St. Louis star catcher Yadier Molina suffered a sprained left thumb tagging out Anthony Rizzo on Addison Russell’s fly ball in the eighth, the Cubs ran themselves out of late scoring chances and the Cardinals ended the Cubs’ five-game winning streak and avoided a sweep with a 4-3 win.

The Cardinals moved six games ahead of the third-place Cubs in the NL Central. The Pirates beat the Dodgers on Sunday to remain four games behind St. Louis.

Molina said he’ll have an MRI on the thumb Monday.

The Cubs couldn’t quite come back from an early fourrun deficit in this one, but the Cubs won four of their final six regular-season games against the Cardinals.

“I could not be more proud of our guys,” manager Joe Maddon said. “It’s obvious we’re playing on the same level as they are right now.”

St. Louis became the first team to clinch a postseason berth – its fifth straight – on Saturday when San Francisco lost.

The Cubs are comfortably ahead of the Giants for the final wild-card spot. And if they advance in the postseason, there’s a good chance they’ll face the Cardinals at some point.

“Obviously, the ultimate goal is through them,” Cubs starter Jon Lester (10-11) said.

Danks, White Sox fall to Indians

CLEVELAND – John Danks won’t have to see the Cleveland Indians again until next season.

No one would blame the Sox’s left-hander for being happy about that.

Danks fell to 5-14 against the Indians after allowing three runs in five innings in Sunday’s 6-3 loss.

“They weren’t as aggressive early in their at-bats as they were the last couple of days,

and I wasn’t able to force then to swing,” said Danks (7-13). “Give them credit for that. They were patient and were able to wait me out, and before you know it my pitch count is up, and I’m out of the game.”

Danks is 1-5 in eight starts since beating the New York Yankees on Aug. 1. Lonnie Chisenhall’s two-run homer keyed Cleveland’s three-run third.

Danks allowed seven hits, struck out three, walked two and was pulled after throwing 110 pitches.

“The home run was the big one,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said. “They made him work. Today, his problem was the pitch count. That and the home run. You’ve got to keep it in the yard. He gave us an opportunity to win,. He just ran out of innings, due to his pitch count.”

Danks blamed himself for the home run, Chisenhall’s first in 52 at-bats off a left-hander this season.

“I was hoping to go inside on him, but it was up and it looked like he was ready for it,” Danks said. “I didn’t fool him much.”

Day wins BMW Championship, moves to No. 1

By JIM LITKE The Associated Press LAKE FOREST – Jason Day has plenty of rivals at the moment, but very few peers.

Day’s runaway victory Sunday in the BMW Championship vaulted him to No. 1 in the world ranking, backing up a boast the then little-known Australian made during a conference call with reporters in 2007 – and for which he was roasted on more than one occasion since.

“I remember sitting on my mom’s bed and thinking that (predicting he’d be No. 1 someday) might not go over too well,” laughed Day, who turns 28 next month.

It didn’t.

“I expected to get a little bit (of criticism), but not the response that I got from practically everyone,” Day recalled, another championship trophy poised within arm’s reach.

“But it’s good to sit in this chair right now.”

His 2-under, final-round 69

and 22-under total at Conway Farms was good for a six-shot victory over rookie Daniel Berger. Scott Piercy finished third, seven strokes back.

The win was Day’s fifth on tour this season and his second in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

In addition to leap-frogging Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy to claim the top spot in the world ranking, it made him the front-runner in the 30-man field heading to East Lake in Atlanta next weekend for the series finale.

Don Marquis, a humorist, playwright and columnist who died in 1937, said, “I get up in the morning with an idea for a three-volume novel and by nightfall it’s a paragraph in my column.”

Each day I get up and think I will write a week of columns in the morning, but I am happy if they are done by nightfall. However, this deal should be part of every bridge player’s repertoire at whatever time of day it is being played. It features lots of instructive material.

What should North respond after partner opens one spade if, first, West passes; and second, if West makes a takeout double? Next, what should West lead against four spades? Last, if West opts for a low diamond, what should happen after that?

In the auction, if it goes one spade – pass, North probably should just blaze away with a pre-emptive fourspade response. Typically his hand would include a singleton, but bidding fewer spades will not describe his hand better. If West doubles, North should bid four spades even quicker.

West has a tough lead. If his four honors will score tricks in the fullness of time, he should lead the spade ace and shift to a club. Here, though, he has to lead a diamond to give the defense a chance.

Then comes the key play: East must put up his diamond jack – bottom of touching honors when playing third hand high.

If South takes the trick and leads a trump to West’s ace, West should now play another low diamond. This gives East the lead for the critical heart shift, which gives the defenders four tricks.

No other defense works.

slightly elevated, lifestyle changes can help to get it back under control: First, if you smoke, make quitting your top priority.

Next, improve your diet and exercise habits. These changes will help dial back your blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart problems and stroke later on.

• Maintain a healthy weight.

• Make vegetables and fruits half of every meal.

• The other half should contain healthy protein and whole-grain carbohydrates.

• Reduce salt intake.

Use a little less salt every day to help your taste buds adjust.

• Drink water instead of sugary beverages.

• Be as physically active as you can all day.

• Get at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise most days of the week.

Some young people with prehypertension probably could benefit from drug treatment to lower blood pressure. That might be something to discuss with your doctor if lifestyle changes don’t have enough of an impact.

When I graduated medical school, it seemed most doctors didn’t start really worrying about blood pressure until it was 160/100 or higher. As I’ve said, now we start worrying when it’s higher than 120/80.

Why the change? Because scientific studies involving literally millions of people over many decades has taught us when we should worry, and given us tools (lifestyle changes, medicines) that reduce the risk.

Dear Dr. K: I’m in my 20s. My doctor says I have prehypertension. How seriously do I need to take this?

Dear Reader: Quite seriously. High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a blood pressure of 140/90 mm Hg or higher. Only a few decades ago, blood pressure lower than that was considered normal – or, at least, not worth worrying about.

But during the last 20 years, multiple long-term studies have shown that people with blood pressures higher than 120/80 but lower than 140/90 have an increased risk of heart disease and stroke. That’s why we now have the term prehypertension, which describes blood pressures between 120/80 and 139/89.

A recent study in The Journal of the American College of Cardiology included nearly 2,500 men and women. They were aged 18 to 30 years when the study began. Researchers measured their blood pressures seven times over the next 25 years. Near the end of the study, they had heart-imaging tests.

The researchers found that people who had prehypertension when they were between the ages of 18 and 30 were more likely to have signs of heart disease in middle age.

Every adult should get their blood pressure checked at least once per year. You don’t have to see a doctor to do it. Many drugstores have blood pressure machines you can use for free, or take advantage of free health screenings at work or in your community. You can also purchase a home blood pressure monitoring machine. They are accurate and inexpensive.

The best and easiest to use involve a cuff around your upper arm (as in the doctor’s office) and automatically take your blood pressure. You just sit there.

Dear Abby: My husband, “Jeff,” and I are fostering a 17-year-old girl we plan to adopt. Jeff’s mother grew up in foster care, and after learning about her life and hardship, I felt we should help out in this way.

I am a stay-at-home mother with three other children (6, 8 and 14), and we are a very tight-knit family, spending most of our time together.

We love our foster daughter and look forward to many good times together.

The problem is my sister.

A way to start the conversation would be to say something like: “I have told you your grandfather died because he got sick. But what I didn’t tell you, because you were so young, is that the illness he suffered from was clinical depression, which he had tried to fight for 12 years.

When it finally became too much for him, he took his own life.

“If you go online and research clinical depression – as I know you probably will – you will see what the symptoms are and that there are treatments for it. Many times those treatments are successful. But sadly, in the case of Poppa, they weren’t.”

At that point let them ask you any questions they have, and assure them that you will discuss any concerns they may have – and anything else – any time they wish.
