JOLIET – City staff will likely park themselves for months in front of a massive analysis of the city’s inefficient and confusing downtown parking system before any action can be taken.

“I think this is going to go for another six to 12 months before we can start making any changes,” said Mike Eulitz, the city’s roadways engineer.

The analysis was presented to the Joliet City Council in August.

High up on a long list of recommendations by Michigan-based consultants Rich & Associates is a structural examination of the city’s two parking garages. Both facilities have cracks in walls and support columns, as well as rusting floor pans and steel reinforcements.

“We need to start looking at getting a structural engineer to look at the decks,” Eulitz said, noting that both facilities were built sometime around the late 1970s. Eulitz said the city did some structural work on the garages about 10 years ago, but needs to determine what should be done now.

Much of the report focuses on the system’s revenue, or rather lack of revenue. Rich & Associates projects the city will lose about $61,000 in 2014 based on current income and expenses. That deficit is expected to increase by about $30,000 a year over the next four years, and

grow to about $385,000 in 2024.

The report offers several recommendations to make the system more profitable, including increasing rates, collecting fines more efficiently and reducing labor costs.

Forgiveness of loan to Victory Centre under consideration by City Council

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The City Council is set to consider forgiving about $1.66 million in loans used to convert the former Joliet Catholic High School into low-income senior housing 15 years ago.

The money came through federal funds with a condition that the Victory Centre housing complex meet affordability standards.

City Manager Jim Hock will recommend that the council, which is scheduled to meet in a combined pre-council and regular session Tuesday because of the Labor Day holiday, approve forgiving the outstanding loan balances to Victory

on commuter parking lots.

“There’s not enough parking as it is,” Quiett said as she prepared to leave the Union Station lot. “Sometimes I have to park at the bank and risk being towed.”

Greg Cowan of Northfield was in town to sell his organic tomatoes at the Joliet Farmers Market. While it was his first visit to town, he said the parking situation didn’t seem too bad.

Driver confusion due to inconsistent parking signage also was high up in the Rich report.

Still, not everyone was concerned about a potential cost increase for parking.

“It’s still better than Chicago,” said Zie Ghani of Joliet who parked in the Union Station lot on her way to the farmers market.

James V. Smith, a downtown real estate consultant who sits on the Joliet City Center Partnership committee, said he was glad that the city was finally looking at the parking situation.

“I am pleased that they are getting off the dime to do something, but it has to fit in with new overall City Center plan to bring people downtown to shop and dine,” Smith said.

Department of Housing and Urban Development grant.

As part of the agreement, Victory paid back 50 percent of its net cash flow annually. Accrued interest on the loans increased the balances to $470,985 and $1.19 million, respectively, at the end of 2013.

HOME requirements stated the property had to remain affordable for 15 years. The affordability requirement expired earlier this year.

In exchange for the debt forgiveness, Victory Associates says it will maintain the facility as quality affordable senior housing through 2028.

Area finds ways to celebrate Labor Day weekend

Labor Day weekend, the traditional end of summer (technically fall doesn’t start until Sept. 22), came in hot and humid, the perfect weather for weekend festivals, outdoor concerts and picnics.

Thousands turned out for the last day of Frankfort Fall Festival, the village’s annual three-day celebration of food, entertainment and artisan enterprise.

Jennifer Hudek of Frankfort spent the early afternoon herding her four children (all younger than 8) and mini-bulldog, Violet, around the carnival game tents.

“We’ve come every year for the last 14 years,” Hudek said as the children tossed rings onto soda bottles. “Now we come for the kids.”

Besides the carnival, the Hudeks also enjoy the food.

“We typically get everyone a lemonade and split a funnel cake,” Hudek said. “We usually get some corn on the cob, too.”

Andy and MaryKay Linss of Naperville spent their time browsing among the festival’s 300 vendor booths.

It was the Linsses’ first visit to Frankfort, and they were impressed by the local restaurants. But the carnival food, not so much.

“This is also the weekend of Naperville’s Last Fling,” Andy Linss said. “But we’re here instead of there.”

“The big parade was just wonderful,” said Kim Ogle, wife of Keith Ogle, this year’s festival chairman. “The weather cooperated. It was sunny all weekend with only a couple of sprinkles.”

Organizers expect about 300,000 visitors came through this year, Ogle said.

For the most part, the weekend went off without a hitch, Lt. Jeremy Stukel of the Frankfort Fire Department said. No heat-related problems were reported, although several people were treated for bee stings, he said.

While most festivals tend to slow down a bit on their final day, Frankfort’s is still business as usual, even on Labor Day, said Eric Kaiser, who was helping run one of the many crowded parking lots along White Street.

“It’s challenging, especially on Monday,” Kaiser said.

“It’s the day a lot of people come to get deals from the vendors.”

Disc golf and bike rides Elsewhere, locals celebrated summer’s last hurrah in a variety of ways.

At Highland Park in Joliet, Curt Mueller of Joliet played disc golf with his sons, Cody and Connor.

“Everyone says the summer weather is going away,” Mueller said, under a broiling sun that registered in the low-

er 80s on the thermometer, but felt much hotter. “I think it’s just beginning.”

Mueller wanted to spend the last day with his boys.

“They have to wind down and get back to reality tomorrow with school,” Mueller said.

It’s a beverage best drunk in moderation, she said, as too much summer beer can, quite literally, lead to an early fall.

Sue Alberico of Minooka spent Saturday night with her gal pals listening to .38 Special and The Fabulous Thunderbirds at the final concert in the Triple Play Series sponsored by the village of New Lenox.

“We love going. We don’t even care if don’t we like the bands,” Alberico said. For the record, she thought the Thunderbirds, who were the opening act, to be the better of the retro rockers.

Finally, Dan Spata of Joliet, who recently retired from teaching at Joliet Township High School, probably had the most unique perspective on the season’s end.

After a busy weekend that included getting ready for and cleaning up after his daughter’s baby shower, Spata spent a quiet day at home Monday.

“There is no last day of summer for me anymore,” Spata said. “Now it’s like everyday is the last day.”

Cops: Woman slain by evicted roommate Speed charged with murder, booked into county jail

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Police say a woman fatally stabbed her former roommate Sunday.

Chief Brian Benton said Kadiedra S. Speed, 20, had been living for about a month

with her friend, Sharleatha M. Green, 34, in the 200 block of North Eastern Avenue in Joliet.

“Around 6 a.m. Green told Speed she would have to leave.

Speed and a man returned about 12:30 p.m. and she tried to get in and realized the locks had

been changed,” Benton said.

Witnesses at Green’s apartment told investigators Speed and her companion broke a window to get inside, a fight ensued and Speed stabbed Green with a knife, Benton said.

Speed and the man fled when police arrived to find

Green bleeding on the living room floor, Benton said. Green was taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Kadiedra Center where S. Speed she was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 1:01 p.m., according to the Will

County Coroner’s office.

Benton said after witnesses were interviewed at the police station Sunday evening, officers located Speed and the man who had been with her.

Speed was arrested on a charge of murder and booked into the Will County jail shortly before midnight. Her companion was questioned, but not charged, Benton said.

New Lenox considers video gaming proposal

Municipalities deal with the rising price of salt

NEW LENOX — Village officials in New Lenox are considering a new proposal to allow video gaming at licensed truck stop establishments.

The village already allows video gaming at licensed veterans establishments and two of them are located in the area. But there are no truck stops in New Lenox and this proposal would only ensure they could be licensed if they come to the village, said Robin Ellis, the village’s community development director.

“We’re doing this [so] if in the future we do have a truck stop, this would be permitted,” she said.

No gas station would qualify, she said. A truck stop that would qualify would need to be at least a 3-acre facility with a convenience store, have separate diesel islands and sell at least 10,000 gallons of diesel or biodiesel fuel per month, she said. They would also need parking spaces for commercial motor vehicles.

The definition of a licensed truck establishment in the proposal would be consistent with the definition in the Illinois Video Gaming Act, which was enacted in 2009 to legalize the use of video gaming terminals in the state.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com Some municipalities still feel the pain of last winter in the form of more expensive salt as they begin to prepare for snowy roads in another potentially harsh season.

Villages and cities in Will County have regularly relied on the Illinois Department of Central Management Services as a marketplace for salt suppliers to bid on municipal contracts.

But because of the severe winter last year and extra purchases of salt, several suppliers have chosen not to contract with CMS. This left villages that decided to re-bid rather than renew their previous salt contracts – like Plainfield, Channahon and Shorewood – without similar-priced contracts as last year. So they needed to actively search for salt suppliers at much greater costs.

“In this case, it turned out to be a good choice to renew,” said Ed Dolezal, Channahon director of public works. “We didn’t do that. So we’re getting salt at almost double the price. It really is a gamble, be-

cause some years the price is lower if you re-bid.”

With the Old Farmer’s Almanac predicting a harsher winter for 2014-15, salt could be a hot commodity. But municipalities still are budgeting for a regular winter.

Channahon used more than 1,600 tons of salt last year on roads, a few hundred tons more than usual. The village got that salt at $53 a ton.

But this summer, with 700 tons of salt in storage, the village bought 750 tons at $98 a ton.

“The demand is about the same,” Dolezal said, regarding the sharp increase in price. “The supply is the problem. We’re about average of what other cities are paying.”

Dolezal said if the winter is especially harsh, the village will have to use its supply judiciously. But major roadways with high traffic will be treated first.

On Friday, the Plainfield Village Board approved a salt contract of 3,000 tons at a price of $107.20 a ton.

“Suppliers in the state program just didn’t offer the bids,” said Doug Kissel, Plainfield waste water superintendent. “We went out and only

got a couple of firm quotes.”

Municipalities started looking for salt in the spring, but many have found the price to be much greater than anticipated.

Shorewood approved the purchase of 1,000 tons of salt at $92.15 a ton on Aug. 12. But village officials still are looking for a better price on another 1,000 tons.

Municipalities that decided to renew their previous contract were spared the current market price for salt.

“We renewed it for one more year,” said Jim Trizna, Joliet director of public works. “The supplier can only increase the price by 5 percent if you renew. But the city can only ask for 5 percent more salt than the previous year.”

Joliet paid less than $50 a ton last year. It is paying about the same amount this year for an order of 8,000 tons with the CMS contract.

But the city also was helped by an additional 6,500 tons for $69.50 a ton in a joint purchase with Naperville, Trizna said.

“It worked out pretty well for us,” he said. “We figure it’s better than paying $75 to $135 per ton like other areas.”

Video gaming statewide and in Joliet has seen immense growth in the past year compared to casino revenues.

According to the latest figures from the Illinois Gaming Board for July, gaming terminals collected more than $55 million in revenue, of which $13 million was collected by the state and $2 million collected by municipalities.

In New Lenox, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion establishments collected $44,000 in revenue in July, according to the Illinois Gaming Board. More than $11,000 went to the state and more than $2,200 went to the village.

Village Board members had their first reading of the proposal Aug. 25 and may vote on it at the next board meeting.

Projected Valley View budget dips into reserves, again

By RYAN TERRELL rterrell@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Valley View School District 365U will dip into its reserves to ensure its tentative fiscal year 2015 budget is balanced and student services are unaffected.

The school district projects $247.67 million in expenditures and $223.31 in operating funds, with a projected $6.8 million

coming out of fund balances to balance the budget, according to Gary Grizaffi, assistant superintendent for administrative services for VVSD. Grizaffi said late payments from the state are again putting pressure on the district.

“We’re trying to maintain services at a time when we’re dealing with financial difficulties. The school board feels we’re trending in the

right direction academically, and we would hate to affect that,” Grizaffi said. “... If the state was living up to its end of the bargain, we would have a [true] balanced budget.”

Major changes in projected expenditures include: • An increase in salary costs of 2 percent, per the new labor agreement ($2.4 million); • An increase in the scheduled debt service payment

($1.56 million); • The addition of four teachers in the gifted program and a director for college and career readiness ($342,000).

The budget operating deficit of $6.8 million for FY2015 is “consistent with what has been projected in our fiveyear financial forecast,” according to a school district document.

Grizaffi reminded the com-

munity that the tentative budget “represents a worst-case scenario, anticipating every line item being spent down to zero, which never happens.”

The budget is on display for the public’s viewing until Sept. 22, when the school board will host a public hearing and is expected to adopt the budget.

The Roxy gets a revival More events planned for longtime theater

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – A group dedicated to attracting more people to the Roxy in Lockport plans to host more events by the end of the year.

Nothing has been set in stone yet but the group is discussing the possibility of hosting a murder mystery, comedy night, Halloween and Christmas movie events at the Roxy, at 1017 S. State St. During the summer, the Roxy group came together to host several movie events at the building for children and families.

Renee Lang, Roxy group chair, said the mission of the group was to create awareness of not only the city’s historic theater but its downtown area.

Many people in the city don’t visit the downtown area often,

she said.

“We need to bring people down and let them know there are shops down there,” Lang said.

The eight-member group came together about a year ago to determine the best way to attract people to the Roxy. The former theater is now owned by local mental health agency Trinity Services Inc., which uses the building to host social clubs for people with mental and developmental disabilities In the past, the building was a movie theater and nightclub.

The group decided on hosting three events aimed at children, families and young adults. While the first of the events didn’t receive a huge turnout because the group didn’t do enough marketing, future events were packed, with the second event sold out,

Lang said.

“We had a lot of excitement,” she said.

At one event in June, children watched the movie “Hugo” and attended an arts party where they got their faces painted and sang songs. An event in July showed the movie “Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow” and a third event in August showed “Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters.”

All three events were “brew and views” for adults and the main vendor for concession food was Olde Towne Cafe in Lockport, Lang said.

With the Roxy group planning more events for the rest of this year, Lang said people were welcome to get involved.

PLAINFIELD – The first of four meetings with parents on Common Core educational standards in the Plainfield school district is scheduled for Wednesday.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. at Indian Trail Middle School. Three more meetings are planned Sept. 10 at Drauden Point Middle School, Sept.

24 at Heritage Grove Middle School and Oct. 1 at John F. Kennedy Middle School. All take place at 7 p.m.

Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 has held several meetings informing parents about the new Common Core standards for the past few school years.

“We’re very proud of the fact that we’re doing this, and maybe this is a little unique to our district,” said Tom Hernandez, community relations director.

The Common Core State Standard Initiative is a federal program that asks states to implement core standards into their curriculum. The change is big and focuses on

math and English/language arts.

The goal of the fall meetings is to focus on the standards in English/language arts, the first round of standardized testing with Common Core standards and the federal and statewide conversation surrounding the standards.

“The shift to the Common Core standards is huge,” Hernandez said. “It’s a major change for kids in the classroom, teachers when teaching and parents when helping their kids.”

A major part of the implementation is testing, which will take place in the spring.

Students will take tests on a computer, a requirement that has led school districts to spend millions on desktops and laptops.

Hernandez said the first meeting attracted about 90 people last year, despite it landing on a wintry day at Drauden Point Middle School.

“We’re in this together,” Hernandez said. “We’re feeling the same pain. But it is what it is and we have to do it.”

On Sept. 13, ShareFest in New Lenox will have its “main exchange event,” where volunteers will participate in drives helping people to secure books, clothing, home goods and food.

They also get collections and care packages for veterans, help people find free legal services and perform various cleaning and fixing projects for those who need it.

It’s a massive day of service for not only New Lenox but Will County. ShareFest has attracted hundreds of volunteers and civic organizations to provide a helping hand in the past.

“It does take a village to go out and serve other people,” said Gary Cheney, ShareFest organizer, in July.

Future of sports complex waiting on cleanup cost estimate

By DAN FARNHAM dfarnham@shawmedia.com LEMONT – It has been four months since the proposed Lemont Sports Complex has been discussed at a Lemont Village Board meeting.

This is in stark contrast to the previous four months, when arguments for and against the project dominated the public comment session and Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves gave consistent updates on it, even if to say there was no news.

Reaves said there have been no updates because there has been no news about the project. He said the village is waiting on cost estimates for the project before it decides if it wants to move forward.

“The biggest thing I’m try-

ing to get locked in is what the exact cost is to clean the site,” he said. “If the dollar figure is too much, that might kill the project.”

Reaves said the site at the north end of Stephen Street has been classified as a brown-

field, meaning it would have to be decontaminated and approved by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency before it could be used.

He said the village is seeking a quote from a construc-

tion company on what it would cost to remove the contaminated dirt, but companies have been busy this summer.

Reaves said this is still a good time to finance the project because bond rates are at a “ridiculously low level.”

JAMES K. GALE Born: April 5, 1937; in Morris Died: Aug. 30, 2014; in Wilmington James K. Gale, age 77, of Wilmington, passed away Saturday August 30, 2014, at his home.

Born April 5, 1937, in Morris, James Keith was a son of the late Keith and Mary Margaret (Cushing) Gale. He was raised in Morris until moving to Coal City his junior year of high school. He was a 1955 graduate of

Coal City HS and went on to further his education at Western Illinois University.

In March of 1958, Jim was inducted in the US Army, where he served in the Pacific until being honorably discharged.

On July 14, 1962, Jim married Aldeene Rink in St. Rose Catholic Church in Wilmington, and together they made their home and raised their family in Wilmington.

Jim worked as an IBEW #1942 Stewart and at Amoco Oil before returning to school in 1964 to become a real estate broker. Jim sold real estate throughout the area for more than 35 years, until retiring from Gale Real Estate, which he owned and operated.

He was a 26 year veteran of Will County politics and spent four years on the Wilmington City Council. As a County Board member, Jim served on the Capitol Improvements Committee, Finance and Operations Committee and the Will County Adult Entertainment Watchdog Group. Jim also served as a Commissioner on the Will County Forest Preserve, Chaired the Will County Land Use Committee and was appointed Chairman of the Joliet Arsenal Reuse Committee by former Congressman George Sangmeister.

Jim helped to bring two business parks, a national tallgrass prairie and a national cemetery to his district.

He supported the I&M Canal National Heritage Corridor project, and he served on the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery Veterans Support Committee.

He was an active member of St. Rose Church in Wilmington, where he served as a Eucharistic Minister, was on the board of directors of Galowich YMCA, was a member of the Wilmington Lions Club, charter member of the Coal City Area Club and belonged to the Knights of Columbus and the Wilmington Moose Lodge #241. Jim enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, and took great pleasure in traveling. He cherished

his family and children, and adored his four grandchildren.

Survived by her loving and devoted daughter, Joleen (William) Morrow; one sister, Dorothy (the late Don) Hiller; numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

Josephine was a graduate of Joliet Township High School and worked for a number of years at the American Can Company in Rockdale. She enjoyed her career there and retired when she started a family. She often spoke and shared stories about the great times she had while working and the wonderful friendships she made during her years there.

Josephine was an excellent baker and was often asked to make her special potica for holidays and other family events. She was a lover of music, particularly live music, which in later years brought her great joy.

Josephine was a lifelong parishioner at St. Mary Nativity Church in Joliet where she was active in the Mother’s Club. She was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Cantigny Post #367.

A celebration of Josephine’s life will begin on Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at Tezak Funeral Home, 1211 Plainfield Road, Joliet with a visitation from 9 a.m. until the time of service to be held in the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Mary Nativity Cemetery in Crest Hill.

Bloomington shuttle bus driver charged with DUI

BLOOMINGTON – A 32-year-old Bloomington man who drives a late-night shuttle bus has been charged with aggravated drunken driving.

Authorities say Stephen Mckenna of Bob’s Blue Night Limo failed standard field sobriety tests that indicated his blood-alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit for driving. The Bloomington Panatgraph reported Mckenna was driving a bus used primarily by downtown bar patrons early Sunday morning when Bloomington police were flagged down.

Court documents filed Sunday say officers saw several people chasing after and banging on the sides of the bus. They say the doors were open and people

were standing on the entry stairway as the bus moved.

Police say the vehicle struck a utility pole wire as they approached it.

Cubs honor Jackie Robinson West little leaguers

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs are tipping their hats to a championship team at Wrigley Field: The Jackie Robinson West All-Stars.

The team that won the national Little League championship game before falling to South Korea in the world championship game was honored on Monday.

The Cubs wore the team’s ball caps and jerseys during pregame routines. Jackie Robinson West Coach Darold Butler threw out the game’s ceremonial first pitch.

And during the 7th inning stretch, the team is leading the crowd in the traditional singing of “Take Me Out To The Ballgame.”

The Cubs will auction off the jerseys and caps online, with proceeds going to Jackie Robinson West Little League.

Last week, the Jackie Robinson West All-Stars were welcomed back to Chicago with two rallies and a parade.

U.S. helicopter crashes in Gulf of Aden; all rescued

DAKAR, Senegal – Senegalese authorities on Monday were monitoring everyone who was in contact with a student infected with Ebola who crossed into the country, and who has lost three family members to the disease.

An Ebola outbreak in West Africa has killed more than 1,500 people in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone and Nigeria. The university student is Senegal’s first case of the dreaded disease.

The 21-year-old left Guinea on Aug. 15, just days after his brother died of the disease, according to Guinea’s Health Ministry. It said that the brother apparently caught Ebola in Sierra Leone.

The student traveled by road, crossing into Senegal despite a border closure. He arrived in Dakar, the Senegalese capital, on Aug. 20, according to the World Health Organization, and was staying with relatives on the outskirts of the city. The agency said that on Aug. 23, he went to a medical facility seeking treatment for fever, diarrhea and vomiting – all symptoms of Ebola but also many other diseases.

But he concealed from doctors that he had had contact with infected people. He was treated instead for malaria and continued to stay with his relatives before turning up at a Dakar hospital on Aug. 26.

Senegal’s Health Ministry said Sunday that it has since traced everyone the student came into contact with, and they are being examined twice a day.

WASHINGTON – A Marine Corps helicopter with 25 aboard crashed Monday in the Gulf of Aden, and all aboard were rescued, the Navy said.

The 17 Marines and eight Navy sailors were recovered and were on board the USS Mesa Verde, and some who sustained minor injuries were treated on the ship.

The CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter crashed as it attempted to land on the ship, which has a big landing deck on the back.

The Navy said the crash was not the result of hostile activity, but the aircraft was transferring troops back to the ship from training in nearby Djibouti.

Perry says disparaging tweet unauthorized AUSTIN, Texas – A tweet from Republican Texas Gov. Rick Perry’s verified account on Sunday night included a disparaging image of the Democratic district attorney who is at the center of his criminal indictment on charges of abuse of power. The tweet was later deleted, followed by another from Perry’s account that disavowed the post.

“A tweet just went out from my account that was unauthorized.

I do not condone the tweet and I have taken it down,” the later post said.

Although the tweets were sent from Perry’s verified account, it was unclear who does the actual posting for the feed.

U.S. eating habits improve a bit – except among poor

By LINDSEY TANNER The Associated Press CHICAGO – Americans’ eating habits have improved – except among the poor, evidence of a widening wealth gap when it comes to diet. Yet even among wealthier adults, food choices remain far from ideal, a 12-year study found.

On an index of healthy eating where a perfect score is 110, U.S. adults averaged just 40 points in 1999-2000, climbing steadily to 47 points in 2009-10, the study found.

Scores for low-income adults were lower than the average and barely budged during the years studied. They averaged almost four points lower than those for high-income adults at the beginning; the difference increased to more than six points in 200910.

Higher scores mean greater intake of heart-healthy foods including vegetables, fruits, whole grains and healthy fats, and a high score means a low risk of obesity and chronic illnesses including heart disease, strokes and diabetes. Low scores mean people face greater chances for developing those ailments.

The widening rich-poor diet gap is disconcerting and “will have important public health implications,” said study co-author Dr. Frank Hu of the Harvard School of Public Health. Diet-linked chronic diseases such as diabetes have become more common in Americans in general, and especially in the poor, he noted.

“Declining diet quality over time may actually widen the gap between the poor and the rich,” Hu said.

Harvard School of Public Health researchers developed the healthy diet index used for the study. It is similar to federal dietary guidelines but features additional categories including red and processed meats, sugar-sweetened beverages and alcohol.

The study authors used that index along with government estimates on trans fat intake to evaluate information in 1999-2010 national health surveys that included interviews with people about their eating habits. The results are published Monday in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Hu said the widening diet gap reflects an income gap that deepened during the recent financial crisis, which likely made healthy food less affordable for many people.

Hu also noted that inexpensive highly processed foods are often widely available in low-income neighborhoods.

The overall diet improvement was largely due to decreased intake of foods containing trans fats but the disappointing results point to a need for policy changes including better nutrition education, Hu said.

In recent years, the government and manufacturers have moved to phase out use of artificial trans fats in foods including processed cookies, cakes, frozen pizza and margarines. Trans fats contribute to unhealthy cholesterol levels and can increase heart disease risks. These fats are made by adding hydrogen to vegetable oil to improve texture and shelf life.

The study authors say

their results are consistent with an earlier report showing that “nearly the entire U.S. population fell short of meeting federal dietary recommendations.”

The federal guidelines are updated every five years and new ones will be issued next year. The current recommendations emphasize limiting intake of trans fats, sodium, processed foods and added sugars. They don’t specify amounts but encourage diets high in whole grains, vegetables and fruits.

The Harvard index has a similar emphasis with some specifics; to get a top score would include eating daily more than two cups of vegetables, at least four servings of fruit and at least one ounce of nuts.

A JAMA Internal Medicine editorial said that the Harvard diet index isn’t perfect because it puts equal emphasis on various foods that may not contribute equally to health. Still, the study highlights a “growing chasm” that is a public health concern, the editorial says. It suggests that government efforts to close the gap with programs including food stamps may be insufficient and that limiting government benefits to cover only healthful foods might be a better strategy.

Obama: ‘Revving’ economy calls for higher wages

By JIM KUHNHENN The Associated Press MILWAUKEE – President Barack Obama renewed his push for Congress to raise the minimum wage Monday in a buoyant accounting of the economy’s “revving” performance, delivered on behalf of Democrats opening their fall campaigns for the midterm congressional elections.

“America deserves a raise,” he told a union crowd in Milwaukee, vowing to keep a hard sell on Congress in much the way he once courted his wife. “I just wore her down,” he cracked.

Timing his push to Labor Day, the traditional start of the autumn campaign, Obama aggressively drew attention to recent economic gains, setting aside past caution on that subject.

“By almost every measure the American economy and American workers are better off than when I took office,” he said, rattling off a string of improving economic indicators even while acknowledging not all people are benefiting. “The engines,” he said, “are revving a little louder.”

It was, at least indirectly,

a pep talk for Democrats facing tough races in a nation still gripped with economic anxieties.

The emphasis on the minimum wage is designed to draw campaign contrasts with Republicans, many of whom maintain that an increase would hurt small businesses and slow down hiring. No one expects Congress to act on it before the November elections.

Despite the absence of a federal increase, 13 states raised their minimum wages at the beginning of this year.

Those states have added jobs at a faster pace than those that did not raise the wage, providing a counterpoint to a Congressional Budget Office report earlier this year that projected that a higher minimum wage of $10.10 an hour could cost the nation 500,000 jobs.

Until now, Obama and his White House aides had been reluctant to draw too much attention to positive economic trends, worried that some may prove illusory or that, even if they hold, many working Americans continue to live on the edge of poverty and take no comfort in the upswing.

But in Milwaukee, Obama dared to say of the job picture, “We’re on a streak.”

White House aides still insist they are not declaring full victory over the lingering effects of a recession that ended five years ago.

But White House officials believe it is time to highlight recent improvements, in part to strengthen a difficult political environment for Democrats and to counter public perceptions that are eroding the president’s public approval. Officials say Obama’s most compelling case is to compare the economy now to what he inherited in 2009 in the aftermath of a near Wall Street meltdown.

Obama, whose public approval is at about 40 percent, has also been cautious about making appearances in states with close midterm political contests and where his popularity might be even lower.

But in coming to Wisconsin, he brought his Labor Day message to the state that was the epicenter of a fight over the collective bargaining rights of public employees. Labor Secretary Tom Perez and several national labor leaders came with him.

WASHINGTON – As states liberalize their marijuana laws, public officials and safety advocates worry that more drivers high on pot will lead to a big increase in traffic deaths.

Researchers, however, are divided on the question.

Studies of marijuana’s effects show that the drug can slow decision-making, decrease peripheral vision and impede multitasking, all of which are critical driving skills. But unlike with alcohol, drivers high on pot tend to be aware that they are impaired and try to compensate by driving slowly, avoiding risky actions, such as passing other cars, and allowing extra room between vehicles.

On the other hand, combining marijuana with alcohol appears to eliminate the pot smoker’s exaggerated caution and seems to increase driving impairment beyond the effects of either substance alone.

“We see the legalization of marijuana in Colorado and Washington as a wake-up call for all of us in highway safety,” said Jonathan Adkins, executive director of Governors Highway Safety Association,

which represents state highway safety offices.

“We don’t know enough about the scope of marijuana-impaired driving to call it a big or small problem. But anytime a driver has their ability impaired, it is a problem.”

Colorado and Washington are the only states that allow retail sales of marijuana for recreational use. Efforts to legalize recreational marijuana are underway in Alaska, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon and the District of Columbia.

Twenty-three states and the nation’s capital permit marijuana use for medical purposes.

It is illegal in all states to drive while impaired by marijuana.

Colorado, Washington and Montana have set an intoxication threshold of 5 parts per billion of THC, the psychoactive ingredient in pot, in the blood. A few other states have set intoxication thresholds, but most have not set a specific level. In Washington, there was a jump of nearly 25 percent in drivers testing positive for marijuana in 2013 – the first full year after legalization – but no corresponding increase in car accidents or fatalities.

Atlantic City’s Revel starts closing after 2 years

By WAYNE PARRY The Associated Press ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – The most spectacular and costly failure in Atlantic City’s 36-year history of casino gambling began to play out Monday when the $2.4 billion Revel Casino Hotel emptied its hotel.

Its casino will close early Tuesday morning.

Revel is shutting down a little over two years after opening with high hopes of revitalizing Atlantic City’s struggling gambling market. But mired in its second bankruptcy in two years, Revel has been unable to find anyone willing to buy the property and keep it

open as a casino. It has never turned a profit.

“It’s kind of sad,” said Andrew Tannenbaum of Edison, who has stayed at Revel a dozen times in the past year.

“Compared to other casinos, this was a lot nicer. There wasn’t the riff-raff here. But I think they overspent, went overboard and got in over their heads. When the Borgata opened, that should have been the last of the high-end casinos for Atlantic City.”

Revel will be the second of three Atlantic City casinos to close in a two-week span. The Showboat Casino Hotel closed its doors Sunday, and Trump Plaza is closing Sept. 16.

The Associated Press MOSCOW – Pro-Russian rebels softened their demand for full independence Monday, saying they would respect Ukraine’s sovereignty in exchange for autonomy – a shift that reflects Moscow’s desire to strike a deal at a new round of peace talks.

The insurgents’ platform, released at the start of Monday’s negotiations in Minsk, the Belarusian capital, represented a significant change in their vision for the future of Ukraine’s eastern, mainly Russian-speaking region.

But it remains unclear if the talks can reach a compromise amid the brutal fighting that has continued in eastern Ukraine. On Monday, the rebels pushed Ukrainian government forces from an airport near Luhansk, the second-largest rebel-held city, the latest in a series of military gains.

The peace talks in Minsk follow last week’s meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Ukrainian counterpart, Petro Poroshenko. The negotiations involve former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma; Russia’s ambassador to Ukraine; an envoy from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in

Europe; and representatives of the rebels.

Similar talks earlier this summer produced no visible results.

Unlike the previous rounds, this time rebels said in a statement carried by Russia’s state-run RIA Novosti news agency they are willing to discuss “the preservation of the united economic, cultural and political space of Ukraine.” In return, they demanded a comprehensive amnesty and broad local powers that would include being able to appoint their own local law enforcement officials.

This deal is only for eastern Ukraine. There are no negotiations on handing back Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula that Russia annexed in March, a move that cost Ukraine several major ports, half its coastline and untold billions in Black Sea oil and mineral rights.

The talks lasted several hours Monday and were adjourned until Friday, when the parties reportedly are to discuss a cease-fire and an exchange of prisoners.

The rebels’ more moderate negotiating platform appeared to reflect Putin’s desire to make a deal letting Russia avoid more punitive Western sanctions while preserving a significant leverage over its neighbor.

Iraqi leader vows to root out militants

By SAMEER N. YACOUB The Associated Press BAGHDAD – Iraq’s outgoing prime minster pledged Monday to turn his country into “a big grave” for Sunni militants from the Islamic State group and commended security forces who achieved a rare victory over insurgents by ending the siege of a Shiite town.

Nouri al-Maliki made the comments during an unannounced visit to the northern community of Amirli, where he was greeted with hugs. A day earlier, Iraqi forces backed

by Iran-allied Shiite militias and U.S. airstrikes broke a two-month siege of the town, where some 15,000 Shiite Turkmens had been stranded.

In footage aired on state TV, al-Maliki was shown sitting at a wooden desk in front of a large

poster of Shiite leader Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, ordering promotions and awards for those who fought in the battle.

“I salute you for your steadfastness and patience against those beasts and killers,” he told a gathering of fighters in a large hall as they chanted Shiite religious slogans. He vowed to root out Sunni militants from areas they control in the country.

“All Iraq will be a grave for those infidels, and we will send all the IS (Islamic State) gang to death,” he added.

Hours before the visit, humanitarian aid began flowing to the town.

Four trucks loaded with food and medicine arrived after being sent by the Iraqi government and the Iraqi Red Crescent, according to Ali al-Bayati, who heads the aid organization called the Turkmen

On Monday, Iraqi security forces and Shiite militiamen retook the nearby town of Suleiman Beg following fierce clashes with Sunni militants, Al-Tarzi said.

“The brave people of Amirli have made their town a new Stalingrad,” he added, referring to the former name of the Russian city of Volgograd, famous for resisting a long siege by the German military during World War II. “Amirli people have clearly shown that Iraqis could not be intimidated by terrorists.”

Americans being detained in Protests challenge North Korea call for U.S. help Pakistan’s premier

By ERIC TALMADGE The Associated Press PYONGYANG, North Korea – North Korea gave foreign media access on Monday to three detained Americans who said they have been able to contact their families and – watched by officials as they spoke – called for Washington to send a high-ranking representative to negotiate for their freedom.

Jeffrey Fowle and Mathew Miller said they expect to face trial within a month. But they said they do not know what punishment they could face or what the specific charges against them are. Kenneth Bae, who already is serving a 15-year term, said his health has deteriorated at the labor camp where he works eight hours a day.

The three were allowed to speak briefly with The Associated Press at a meeting center in Pyongyang. North Korean officials were present during the interviews, conducted separately and in different rooms, but did not censor the

questions that were asked.

The three said they did not know they were going to be interviewed until Kenneth Bae i m m e d i a t e l y beforehand.

All said they believe the only solution to their situation is for a U.S. representative to Jeffrey Fowle come to North Korea to make a direct appeal.

That often has been North Korea’s bargaining chip in the past, when senior statesMathew Miller men including former President Bill Clinton made trips to Pyongyang to secure the release of detainees.

North Korea says Fowle and Miller committed hostile acts that violated their status as tourists. It has announced authorities are preparing

for the trial but has not announced the date.

In Washington, National Security Council spokesman Patrick Ventrell said, “Securing the release of U.S. citizens is a top priority, and we have followed these cases closely in the White House.” He added, “We continue to do all we can to secure their earliest possible release.”

Fowle arrived in North Korea on April 29. He is suspected of leaving a Bible in a nightclub in the northern port city of Chongjin. Christian proselytizing is considered a crime in North Korea. Fowle, 56, lives in Miamisburg, Ohio, where he works in a city streets department. He has a wife and three children ages 9, 10 and 12.

North Korea said Miller, 24, entered the country on April 10 with a tourist visa but tore it up at the airport and shouted that he wanted to seek asylum. Miller refused to comment on whether he was seeking asylum.

Bae, a 46-year-old Korean-American missionary, has been held since November 2012.

By ZARAR KHAN and ASIF SHAHZAD The Associated Press ISLAMABAD – Ahead of a joint session of parliament, Pakistan’s prime minister and army chief held marathon meetings Monday over violent anti-government protests that could force the premier of this nuclear-armed country to resign.

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif again vowed he would not step down under duress, even as protesters briefly took over the country’s state-run television broadcaster and battled security forces in the streets.

But the pressure from three days of violent protests on Sharif has intensified amid reports – later denied by the military – that the country’s powerful army chief advised him to resign.

The parliamentary session Tuesday appears to be an attempt to rally political support to the prime minister’s side. While many politicians have backed him so

far, many in the country increasingly have grown worried about the protests and the direction of the nascent democracy in the country of 180 million people.

The turmoil comes as part of the mass demonstrations led by cleric Tahir-ul-Qadri and opposition politician Imran Khan, who both demand Sharif step down over their allegations of fraud in last year’s election. Their protests, which have been peaceful for weeks, turned ugly this weekend when clashes between protesters and security forces killed three people and wounded some 400 in running street battles in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad.

Monday began with more violence.

Demonstrators briefly took over Pakistan’s state television station, forcing the channel off the air. Senior official Athar Farooq said 20 cameras went missing as protesters overran the station, armed with sticks and screaming.

Tax refunds might take a health care hit It might be a little early to throw up red flags about income tax returns, but if you are one of the millions of people getting tax credits to help pay for your health insurance premiums, you might want to look into the matter soon.

According to an Associated Press story, any tax credit overpayment might be deducted from your income tax refund if you made more money this year than you initially estimated when you applied for that tax credit.

This is especially important for people who count on that refund for paying, say, winter heating bills.

This particular point about how the health care changes and the tax act interface has not really been explained.

Those who will be affected by this part of the law are usually the ones who can least afford it.

“More than a third of tax credit recipients will owe some money back, and [that] can lead to some pretty hefty repayment liabilities,” George Brandes, vice president for health care programs at Jackson Hewitt Tax Service, told the AP. H&R Block, the tax counseling company, said consumers whose incomes have grown this year should act now and contact HealthCare.gov or their state insurance exchange to update their accounts while there is still time to affect the refund.

“As time goes on, the ability to make adjustments diminishes,” warned Mark Ciaramitaro, H&R Block’s vice president of health care services.

“Clients count on that refund as their biggest financial transaction of the year,” Ciaramitaro said.

“When that refund goes down, it really has reverberations.”

While the administration of President Barack Obama told the AP that it is constantly urging newly insured consumers to report changes that could affect their coverage, we haven’t seen those messages, and we doubt the people who are getting the credits have heard that message either This repercussion is just another in a laundry list of unfortunate side effects of a law that was hastily put together, ill-advised and overly bureaucratic and complex.

That those who can least afford it could be getting a January surprise is a shame, and the fact that many people who previously used the 1040EZ form might have to hire a professional could be a double hit next year.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Rauner needs to be called out on lie “We should have billions of dollars every year as part of our budget process … (to) maintain and expand our infrastructure,” Bruce Rauner said last week, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Rauner has been doing his best to woo road builders all year, and he was speaking to the Illinois Farm Bureau, which has lots of members who rely on roads and bridges to get their goods to market. So I understand the politics of his bold promise.

But this stuff costs lots money. And infrastructure is only his second priority. His top priority is education funding.

He wants to spend even more money on schools. Yet, Rauner says he wants to slash the state’s income tax rate. Can he really do all that with lower revenues?

There are three ways to pay for these pie-in-the sky plans: 1) Gin up the state’s economy to North Dakota levels; 2) Stop making the full state pension payments; or 3) Hike state total taxation far above current levels.

Let’s examine all three.

1) Rauner has been saying all along that economic expansion

VIEWS Rich Miller is key to generating the revenue needed to pay for everything he wants to do. Yes, Illinois’ jobless rate is down considerably over the last year. That’s good news.

But unless oil and natural gas “fracking” turns our state into another Saudi Arabia, there’s just no way Illinois can hit Rauner’s fantasy projections.

2) Resuming the state’s sad history of skipping or skimping on pension payments would likely result in a major bond rating downgrade, perhaps even to junk status. That’s really not an option. The other move would be to force local school districts to take over the state’s role of funding the teachers pension system. But Rauner has also proposed another amazing magical fantasy of capping local property taxes. He can’t shift pension costs and cap property taxes all at once without decimating the budgets of every school district

in Illinois. Period. End of story.

3) After assuring Republican primary voters that he’d slash taxes, the candidate now says he wants to gradually roll back the 2 percentage point, 2011 income tax hike over four years. That’s somewhere around $8 billion in lost annual revenue by his target date – about a 40 percent cut in current income tax receipts, and the personal and corporate income taxes account for a little over half of all state revenues.

Rauner’s proposed service tax would have to be ginormously bigger than the $450 million or so he’s advertised to cover a nut like that. And never mind that taxes on services will tend to drive down consumption, which reduces demand, which hurts economic growth, particularly at the middle and lower ends.

The new spending Rauner is proposing transcends the political posturing we’ve grown accustomed to. I don’t say this lightly, but it’s a boldfaced lie.

After years as an assistant, Lockport product Mike Zimmer reaches top tier in NFL coaching / 19

A year ago, the Vikings ranked last in points allowed.

“I look at it as an opportunity to accomplish something, and every day I think about how I can make the team better,” Zimmer said. “I also want to be involved with a team that the fans can be proud of.”

It seems appropriate that Zimmer’s son, Adam, a nine-year NFL assistant, will join him on the Viking staff to

coach the linebackers.

That’s because Mike’s dad, Bill, a hall of fame coach in both football and wrestling during his 35 years at Lockport, had such a major influence on him. Mike played quarterback for his dad in 1972 and 1973 and also wrestled for him.

“My dad had a big impact not only on me but on all of the kids that he coached,” Mike said. “A lot of it just came from watching him every sin-

gle day.

“I saw how he switched things depending on his players and how he took care of kids. There were just many different things. He was a very good role model for me.”

Mike Zimmer also feels he benefited, as have so many others, from participating in the competitive sports atmosphere in the Joliet area during his high school career, when he also played baseball for the Porters.

“There were very good sports programs and high schools that we played at, not only in football, but also baseball and basketball,” said Mike, who joins George Mikan (NBA) and Jack Hendricks (MLB) as the only major sports head coaches/managers from the Joliet area.

“The high school coaches always have done a great job and had a good work ethic. The sports programs there are as good as anywhere in the United States. I think that’s because of the blue-collar aspect and about how hard work pays off.”

Among the many aspects he likes about his job with the Vikings is that he finds himself in a setting similar to the one in which he grew up.

“The fan base in Minnesota is very similar to that in Joliet,” Zimmer said. “People love football and the outdoors in both places, so it’s a great fit for me.”

Mike Zimmer had definitely put in his time as a National Football League assistant coach.

But as such, he also knew all too well that service and good performance didn’t necessarily result in landing one of the league’s coveted head coaching jobs.

That’s why – as he gets ready for his first regular-season game as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday in St. Louis – Zimmer feels very fortunate.

“There’s only 32 of these jobs in the world, and I’m lucky to have one of them,” Zimmer said last week as he prepared for his team’s final preseason game at Tennessee.

“All the positions in the National Football League are special. That’s because of the players that you get to coach and the people who you work with.”

While the 1974 Lockport graduate certainly has enjoyed his 20-year odyssey through the NFL coaching ranks, it also has featured moments of frustration as he interviewed for head coaching jobs but kept being denied a top spot.

Zimmer most-recently put together a successful stint as the defensive coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals (2008 to 2013), who regularly had one of the NFL’s best defenses. He held the same position with the Atlanta Falcons (2007) and the Dallas Cowboys (2000 to 2006).

Following a 15-year career in the college ranks, Zimmer joined the NFL coaching fraternity in 1994 when he was hired by the Cowboys as a defensive backs coach.

“It can be frustrating at times when you’re a coordinator and you see some new guy getting hired,” Zimmer said.

“So a lot of the older guys were pulling for me.

“At my first press conference, I was happy since I had been working for this for a long time. But I also realized right away that we had a lot of work to do.”

Since being hired in mid-January as the Vikings’ ninth head coach, Zimmer has been hard at work in trying to lay the foundation for a resurgence for the proud franchise, which has gone 24-39 and made only one playoff appearance in the past four seasons.

Zimmer and his squad were successful in the preseason, winning all four games. They held two opponents to single digits and allowed 12 points

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After Jamie McMurray finished 12th in Sunday night’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Atlanta, his season shrank to one race, the one scheduled Saturday night at Richmond.

Or did it?

McMurray, 16th in the point standings, has not won a race in 2014. If he doesn’t win at Richmond, he will not be among the 16 qualifiers for the 10-race Chase for the Sprint Cup. Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch, Aric Almirola and AJ Allmendinger are behind him in points but have won a race, so they will be in.

If a driver does not make the Chase, analysts may conclude his season is a failure.

McMurray, though, offered a different perspective last week when he stopped at Chicagoland Speedway for a testing session in advance of the Sept. 14 MyAFibStory.com 400 there, which kicks off the Chase.

“Everyone’s plan every week is to win,” McMurray said as he prepared to take his best shot at that elusive first

victory of the season. “The media talks about how you have to win to get into the Chase.

But everybody gambles and takes risks every week, so I don’t know if that plays out any differently.”

The field for the season-ending Chase was expanded to 16 this year, and the format was changed to a playoff style.

The race at Chicagoland will be the first in the three-race Challenger Round, after which four drivers will be eliminated, leaving 12. Then comes the three-race Contender Round, where the dozen survivors will be trimmed to eight. The threerace Eliminator Round follows, leaving four finalists for the final race at Homestead.

“It’s going to be a little different this year because there’s going to be 16 guys involved,” said McMurray, who runs for Chip Ganassi Racing.

“If you make the Chase and finish 16th in points, I don’t know if that’s that stellar of a year. There could be a guy who doesn’t make the Chase and wins two or three races in the Chase, finishes 17th in points, and I’m going to say he had a lot better year.

“You can’t base your year

I don’t know if that guy at the end of the year is going to say, ‘Wow, we really killed it this year.’

“To make the Chase and not win a race isn’t what you’re looking for. If you don’t make it but win three races in the last 10, I think everyone would take that over just making the

Chase, especially now that there’s 16 guys in it. It’s not quite as special as it was when there were 10 in it.”

In other words, as big a deal as the Chase is, there will be no surrendering on the part of McMurray or any of the other drivers who do not make it.

There is plenty of incentive to go out every week and attempt to win.

“The Chase is not makeor-break for us,” McMurray said. “Getting the win in the

All-Star Race [in May] was awesome. If we could have won at Bristol [where he led the recent race for 148 laps but finished eighth], we’d be in the Chase. Then you look at your year and say, ‘We’ve won a couple times and we made the Chase.’

“But I hate that there’s so much emphasis on making the Chase, because if you just make it and you don’t run well, I don’t really see where that’s all that great.”

McMurray had a year in a 2010 where he won a few big races, and in others, he said, “we ran horrible. There were no in-betweens. This year, our horribles have been about 14th if we didn’t blow a tire or something. We’ve been more consistent.”

He finished in the top five in two races and has seven top-10s. Not bad, but not quite the season he hoped to have.

After all, the goal each week is to win, and he hasn’t done that yet.

If it doesn’t happen at Richmond, so be it. Chase or no Chase, McMurray plans to bring his “A” game to Chicagoland Speedway and to every race the rest of the season.

Kahne holds off Kenseth to win Atlanta shootout

By CHARLES ODUM The Associated Press HAMPTON, Ga. – There is pressure that comes with being part of the powerful Hendrick Motorsports team with NASCAR superstars Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. For Kasey Kahne, the pressure grew as he feared he would be the only driver on the team left out of the Chase for the Sprint Cup. That changed when Kahne earned his spot in the Chase by charging past Matt Kenseth and Denny Hamlin in a two-lap shootout to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday night.

“That was just an unbelievable way to make the Chase,” Kahne said.

“It was all I could think about,” Kahne said. “I knew Atlanta was a better opportunity for myself than going out to Richmond. I just knew that tonight we needed it.”

Rick Hendrick beamed after the race as he talked about his team’s chances in the Chase.

Gordon, who finished 17th, still leads the points race.

Earnhardt, who was 11th, is second. Johnson, who finished fourth in Atlanta, is sixth.

“I think we’ve got better balance this year than we’ve had in the past,” Hendrick said.

Johnson, Earnhardt and Gordon celebrated with Kahne on the victory stand.

“I looked up and saw them all standing there and I was really proud of the organization when I saw that happen,” Hendrick said.

It was Kahne’s first win of the season and his third career victory in Atlanta.

Kenseth, who finished second, also qualified for the Chase on points. He began the second restart in first place, but couldn’t stop the charge from Kahne.

Hamlin was third, followed

by Johnson, Carl Edwards and Danica Patrick.

Patrick’s sixth-place finish was the best of her career, the highest for a woman at Atlanta Motor Speedway and the second-highest for a female in NASCAR history. Sarah Chris-

tian finished fifth in a Sprint Cup race in 1949 at Heidelberg (Pa.) Raceway.

It was Stewart’s first race since the car he was driving struck and killed 20-year-old Kevin Ward Jr. in an Aug. 9 race at a dirt track in upstate New York. The fatal wreck is still under investigation.

With only two laps remaining and Kahne holding a solid lead over Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr. and Kyle Busch collided, forcing a caution flag and the first shootout.

Harvick, who led 195 laps, had contact with Joey Logano in heavy traffic and hit the wall on the restart, bringing another caution flag and a second shootout.

Kahne, who had four fresh tires, started behind Kenseth and Hamlin on the final restart.

Conte back, Briggs excused; Bears form practice squad

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – The Bears’ 53-man roster and new 10-man practice squad took to the field Monday at Halas Hall for the first practice leading up to Sunday’s season opener against the Buffalo Bills at Soldier Field.

With the regular season upon them, the Bears received some good injury news. Chris Conte (concussion), Brian de la Puente (knee), Tony Fiammetta (hamstring) and Ryan Mundy (head laceration) all participated Monday in the portion of practice open to the media.

Coach Marc Trestman said Conte was limited, and the safety had not yet been cleared to speak to the media. He suf-

fered a concussion in the preseason game in Seattle.

As for who will start at safety, a position Conte and Mundy are candidates for, Trestman said the team will “wait and see.”

Soler, Cubs hand Brewers 6th straight loss

By JOHN JACKSON The Associated Press CHICAGO – Jorge Soler has never lacked confidence.

Even before being promoted to the major leagues last week, the Cuban slugger declared this season to be “his time.”

But his blistering start with the Cubs has caught even him off-guard.

Soler doubled twice and scored a run in his Wrigley Field debut Monday as the Cubs beat Milwaukee, 4-2, handing the Brewers their sixth straight loss and knocking them out of the NL Cen-

tral lead.

Soler became just the third player in the past 100 years to get at least one extra-base hit in each of his first five games in the majors. Will Middlebrooks did it for Boston in 2012 and Enos Slaughter for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1938.

So far, Soler is batting .526 with three homers and seven RBIs. “I have been a little bit surprised,” he said through a translator. “I expected it to go well, but not as well as it’s gone so far.”

Turner won in just his second start for the Cubs after being acquired from Miami last month. The right-hander allowed just one run and five hits in 6 1-3 innings.

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Friends of Joliet resident Janine Kaye noticed the changes before she did.

“We had been on vacation in Minnesota, and we were playing Euchre, and she messed up,” her longtime friend Dianne Lusinger said.

“Then she got lethargic and forgetful. I seriously thought she had a mini-stroke.”

When the group returned home, they took Kaye to the hospital. Within a few hours, Kaye’s personality took a sharp turn.

“By about 12:30 in the morning, she was a totally changed person,” Lusinger said, “and she had stopped talking.”

The next day, a biopsy had confirmed a shocking diagnosis – inoperable brain cancer.

Kaye had glioblastoma multiforme, the most common and aggressive of the primary brain tumors. It was highly malignant.

The American Cancer Society estimates malignant brain or spinal tumors will arise in just less than 1 percent of the population this year. By the time many are diagnosed, their tumors already have advanced to Stage 4.

Kaye’s brain swelled after the biopsy, and she was placed on a ventilator. Within a week, Kaye’s doctors told the family to say their goodbyes, Lusinger said. Kay was only 44, with two young boys.

“It was absolutely awful,” Lusinger said. “We didn’t even have a second to process. And every decision was life-or-death.”

The ventilator was disconnected, but Kaye did not die.

“She proved everybody wrong and woke up,” Lusinger said. “She just opened her eyes.”

That was two months ago.

“I thought I was going to chemotherapy and radiation therapy, with the goal of extending her life.

Although she has difficulty responding, Kaye did say her children’s names last week. Lusinger said Kaye’s personality is returning and she is able to get around with a walker.

While it seems the prevalence of brain tumors has increased, the National Cancer Institute said the greater incidence is due to better diagnostic methods and that the rate for brain tumors actually has been stable since 1991.

Two-thirds of the tumors in adults and one-third of tumors in children are nonmalignant. Meningiomas – like the tumor Karen Henderson of Morris has – are the most common, the institute also said.

She went to the hospital and was treated for dehydration.

She was preparing to leave when her CT scan results arrived. It showed the mass

Over the next year, she saw her primary care physician, a neurologist and three neurosurgeons for first, second and third opinions. Some recommended surgery; others disagreed.

The only consensus was that meningiomas are generally not malignant. Henderson finally decided against surgery.

“They said: If you’re going to have a tumor on the brain, then that’s the best kind to have,” Henderson said.

Allison Rios of Joliet knows the stories all too well.

Her mother, Dawn Bailey, died in 2005 from glioblastoma brain cancer.

During her mother’s illness, Rios kept a journal and sent email updates to friends and family.

After Bailey’s death, Rios wrote, “Goodbyes Before You’re Gone,” which also included the stories of one survivor and 10 others who

had died from brain cancer.

Proceeds are donated to the American Brain Tumor Association. From those stories, Rios said she learned brain cancer is as individual as the person.

“Everyone’s experience was so different because of where the tumor is in the brain,” she said. “Some of them [patients] had violent mood swings. Some lost their speech.”

Like Kaye, Bailey’s friends and family thought Bailey was having a stroke.

Bailey tripped, forgot words and her hands had patches of numbness. One day, she “zoned out” while with a friend. An MRI showed two connected brain tumors.

They were malignant and inoperable. Bailey’s memory declined, and she became aloof.

“It was a nightmare,” Rios said. “She was my best, best friend.”

Meridian welcomes new spinal surgeon THE HERALD-NEWS Meridian Medical Associates, a multi-specialty physician group in Will County, has welcomed Dr. Dalip Pelinkovic – a leading spinal surgeon specializing in complex cervical spine surgery – to the Meridian Medical Associates family as part of a joint venture with DuPage Medical Group.

Pelinkovic began providing orthopaedic spinal services to Meridian Medical Associates’ patients Aug. 29 at its Glenwood Avenue location.

Pelinkovic is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in spine surgery.

Pelinkovic’s medical education was completed in 1991 at Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany.

He trained at the Universi-

ty of Frankfurt and BG Trauma Clinic, both in Frankfurt, in orthopaedic and spine surgery.

Note that after that auction, West, knowing dummy has heart length, would be likely to lead his fourth-highest spade. Then South hurries to take the first 11 tricks: one spade, six diamonds and four clubs.

When North cue-bid two spades, South decided, debatably with such a good hand for diamonds, to rebid two no-trump.

Then North cue-bid again to ask if South really could control spades.

At the table, West led the spade seven, but he should have started with a high heart. He should have had a sense of urgency to take the first five tricks – and here East-West could have won the first six: five hearts and one spade.

Dear Abby: My son married an educated professional woman from another country. When their twins were born, my daughter-inlaw immersed them in her native language so it would become their mother tongue. Although I understand and respect the benefits of being bilingual, this caused a lot of communication gaps and frustration between us and the grandkids during their early years.

They attend a bilingual elementary school now, and their English is superb and communication between us is great. The problem is, when we are together, my daughter-in-law speaks to her children exclusively in her native language. My son understands the conversation, but my husband and I do not know what is being said. We think this is rude and inconsiderate. Are we being overly sensitive? – Left Out in Florida

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips Dear Left Out: This is not unusual in multilingual families, and I agree that it is inconsiderate.

Have you spoken to your son and daughter-in-law about how this makes you feel? If you haven’t, you should, because she may not be deliberately trying to make you feel excluded.

Dear Abby: I’m a 55-year-old gay male who has been with my now-spouse, “Owen,” in a loving, committed relationship since 2005. While earlier we could not legally marry, in 2006 we had a commitment ceremony bringing together close friends and family to acknowledge and celebrate our relationship. In 2013, Owen and I were finally able to legally marry

in California. My dilemma comes from people who don’t know what to call us. People often refer to my spouse as my “friend” or “partner.”

At times I say nothing, but more often than not, I find myself saying, “Oh, you mean my HUSBAND.” Some of them thank me for the clarification; others just look at me with a blank stare. – Married in California Dear Married: Not at all. Cause of ‘anovulation’ should be determined Dear Doctor K: I’ve always had infrequent periods, but I never thought much of it. My doctor recently used the word “anovulatory” to explain why I’ve had trouble getting pregnant. What does this mean? Could the two be connected?

Dear Reader: ”Anovulation” means you are not ovulating -releasing eggs. A woman’s ovary should release approximately one egg each month. Once released, the egg travels into the fallopian tube.

There, it can be fertilized by the entry of a sperm. The fertilized egg then enters the uterus.

When a woman does not ovulate, no egg is available to be fertilized by sperm. As a result, a woman cannot become pregnant.

Women who are anovulatory have irregular, few or no periods.

What causes anovulation?

Something wrong with the signals that cause ovulation. What are those signals? They start in a woman’s brain. The brain has its own “calendar.” It knows how old you are, and it knows what time of month it is. It knows the time of your life for you to start ovulating and the time to stop -- and it knows the time of the month for you to ovulate.

The brain controls ovulation and menstrual periods through

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff a group of hormones, natural substances made in the brain that travel between different parts of the brain and also travel through the blood to the ovaries and uterus.

Anovulation can occur for many reasons. For example, women who exercise intensely, for long periods of time, may not ovulate. Women who are anorexic or have a very low body mass index may also have irregular or absent periods. In both cases, it appears that the brain hormones that normally stimulate ovulation are “dialed down,” for reasons we don’t understand.

Another common cause of irregular periods is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Women with PCOS don’t ovulate normally.

That’s because the body doesn’t respond normally to the hormone insulin.

Anovulation can also be a sign of abnormal hormone levels.

Women who do not produce enough thyroid hormone may not ovulate normally. The same is true of women with high blood levels of prolactin. Prolactin is a hormone

normally produced in the brain that stimulates the breast to produce milk during breastfeeding.

Once your doctor identifies the reason why you are not ovulating, the problem often can be corrected. For example, if you have PCOS, your doctor may prescribe medications that improve insulin sensitivity. This, in turn, may improve your chances of ovulating and becoming pregnant.

Even if your doctor cannot correct an underlying cause, you may still be able to become pregnant. A medication like clomiphene (Clomid), for example, can stimulate your ovaries to produce eggs.

Even if you do not want to become pregnant, it is important to recognize anovulation and to speak with your doctor about it.

That’s because anovulation can also affect other areas of a woman’s health. Infrequent periods, for example, increase the risk of the bone-thinning disease osteoporosis.

When talking to your doctor, ask what you can do to build and preserve bone strength.

Enjoy time with others Dr. Wallace: I’m 18 and a freshman at a community college. My boyfriend and I had dated seriously for the past two years in high school. We spent all of our free time together and loved being with one another. However, it’s true that there are also some very entertaining, as well as highly educational, programs that warrant the time to learn something new. Many channels offer interesting science, travel, history and health information and are worthwhile to watch.

But TV can also have a very negative influence as mentioned in Sassy Magazine.

They report that by the age of 13, the average television viewer has witnessed 8,700 murders and over 160,000 violent acts on the tube!

Dr. Wallace: You always talk about the health problems attributed to smoking cigarettes, and the fear of cancer for smokers and non-smokers who breathe the secondhand smoke. But isn’t it also true that sometimes a person who has never smoked cigarettes or cigars and does not breathe secondhand smoke could still die of lung cancer?

– Nameless, Brookhaven, Mississippi Dear Nameless: It is possible that a person who has never smoked, or even breathed secondhand smoke, could die of lung cancer.

However, according to The Cancer Society, if no one smoked, 83 percent of lung cancer would eventually be eliminated.

‘May in the Summer’: Marriage, symbolism and a missed opportunity

By Stephanie Merry The Washington Post On paper, there’s a lot to like about “May in the Summer.” It was written and directed by a woman, which is an anomaly, but it’s also about the complicated inner-workings of distinct female characters and takes place in Amman, Jordan. It even passes the Bechdel Test, which is a ridiculously easy metric that most movies nevertheless fail: It has at least two female characters who talk to each other about something other than a man.

Given how underrepresented women are in Hollywood, it’s understandable to want to root for “May in the Summer.” But a movie has to be more than a hopeful symbol of progress, and this one only sporadically lives up to the promises of a good cast and a filmmaker, Cherien Dabis, who won over critics and festival crowds five years ago with the drama “Amreeka.”

The story revolves around May (Dabis, in her acting debut). An Amman native with a Jordanian-Christian mother and an American father, she now lives in New York, working as a writer. When she returns to her home town for her wedding, to a Palestinian also from Jordan, she spends time with her opinionated sisters and divorced parents.

Her mother, who blatantly disapproves of the marriage, doesn’t plan to attend the ceremony. But, does May want to get married? That remains unclear, even to her.

This has the makings of a good story, and it’s an appropriate time (as always) to look at the cultural and religious discrimination in the Middle East. But Dabis made a misstep in casting herself in the lead role, despite her movie-star looks. Although she warms up to the part by the movie’s end, her sometimes wooden delivery can be distracting, and her demeanor tends to be inscrutable. The

best actors manage to convey a lot with just a look, but Dabis isn’t there yet. Meanwhile, her attempt to conjure the giddy absurdity of drunkenness – a notoriously tall order for an actor – falls flat.

But she has her moments.

In one of the most memorable scenes, May and her sister, Dalia (Alia Shawkat), float in the Dead Sea while having a heart-to-heart. It’s beautifully filmed, and the conversation feels real. Across the sea, May says, people are at war, while here, her big life decisions revolve around whether to get a band or a DJ for her wedding reception.

Along with Shawkat, the rest of the casting is exceptional. Bill Pullman plays the girls’ absentee father, turning a deadbeat dad into a likable guy, and their mother, Nadine, is played by Hiam Abbass. She may be the most interesting character in the movie. A devout Christian who has been alone since her husband left her for a younger

woman, she doesn’t quite know what her purpose is. So she spends her days cooking for her daughters and working on untying a giant knot, which May believes is some kind of jinx on her upcoming nuptials.

The movie slips in some thought-provoking themes, including a certain solipsism as every character harbors secrets from the others. But neither the idea that only we know ourselves, nor the timely plot thread about Nadine’s religious intolerance, feels thoroughly explored. It’s diverting to watch and has moments of brilliance, but even with all its refreshing female characters, “May in the Summer” doesn’t leave a lasting impression.

• “May in the Summer” received two-and-a-half stars out of four. The film is rated R and contains strong language.

It is in English and Arabic with subtitles. The film runs 99 minutes.

This employee will interact with engineers, contractors, developers and/or the public as needed. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer literacy is required. An Illinois Drinking Water Certificate and/or Wastewater Operator Certificate strongly desired. An Illinois Professional Engineering License and/or Bachelor's Degree in engineering or public administration are a plus.
