JOLIET – The Housing Authority of Joliet on Wednesday approved a contract with a moving company to relocate Des Plaines Gardens Homes residents, who could by next week begin getting Section 8 vouchers to move elsewhere.

Authority CEO Michael Simelton said residents “still have to go through a process” after getting vouchers before moving.

“Their units have to be inspected and approved,” he said.

But those who want to move soon could begin leaving in a couple of weeks, he said.

The authority board approved a $134,000 contract with Chicago-based Midway Moving and Storage Inc. to provide moving services to residents going elsewhere in

Will County.

“This is the next step in us relocating residents,” Simelton told the board before the contract was approved.

On Thursday and Friday, authority officials will meet with residents to discuss the relocation plans and procedures.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development last week gave final approval for demolition of 122 of the 162 units at Des Plaines Gardens. Demolition is scheduled to begin in March.

The authority will replace the demolished units with a new townhome and single-family development to be called Water’s Edge, which will be built in the same area of Des Plaines Street south of downtown.

The authority expects to issue 180-day notices before the end of this week to Des Plaines

Gardens residents, informing them they have to move out of the units slated for demolition.

Simelton said six months was sufficient time for residents at the old Poole Gardens when that housing complex was destroyed and replaced by the Liberty Meadow Estates subdivision.

Like Poole Gardens, Des Plaines Gardens residents will get housing vouchers providing subsidized rent payments for them to move elsewhere.

Simelton said those vouchers could be available as early as Sept. 24.

“The vouchers are good anywhere in the United States,” Tina Pourroy, manager of the Housing Choice Voucher Program for the authority, told the board.

Housing Authority of Joliet looks to upgrade security after 2 Fairview fatal shootings

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A second fatal shooting in three weeks has left police, neighbors and the Housing Authority of Joliet looking for ways to enhance security at the Fairview housing complex.

The authority hopes to improve camera security at the complex on Englewood Avenue.

Meanwhile, a neighborhood group is scheduled to meet Monday to look for ways to address the crime issue at Fairview.

Joliet City Councilwoman Bettye Gavin, who also is executive director of the Forest Park Community Center, raised the issue at the authority’s board meeting Wednesday.

Fairview is located in the Forest Park area.

“We come seeking your help,” Gavin said.

She said the security camera system now at Fairview needs to be improved. Meanwhile, residents of the housing complex have not been helpful, she said.

“We have noted that the

cameras located in Fairview need some upgrading,” Gavin said. “The quality of the cameras are not conducive to the police department helping and solving [the crimes].”

The shootings were Sunday and Aug. 23. In both situations, men were found dead in their vehicles in the early morning hours on Englewood Avenue.

An arrest has been made and charges have been filed in the Aug. 23 shooting.

“When we look at the addresses of the perpetrators and the victims, we see they are not people in the [Fairview] complex,” Gavin told the authority board. “These are people from the outside coming in.”

Authority staff have already been working with Joliet police on the potential upgrade of the security camera system.

They estimate it would cost $190,000 to replace four of the nine cameras now at Fairview and install three additional cameras.

“We’re trying to move [cameras] based on what police advise us,” said John Chow, authority chief of development and operations. “They are working with our on-site man-

ager on an almost-daily basis.”

Meanwhile, Gavin said, Fairview residents have not been helpful in solving the crimes.

“We have not been able to get the cooperation of the residents,” she said. “There’s a lot of noninvolvement. Nobody saw anything. In order to solve this we have to work together.”

A neighborhood meeting at 7 p.m. Monday is aimed in part at fostering more resident participation in dealing with crime in the area, she said.

The Forest Park Neighborhood Council will meet at the Birth Into New Live Church at 1019 Woodruff Road, across the street from the Forest Park Community Center.

Authority Board Commissioner Robert Hernandez said Fairview residents probably are worried about what will happen to them if they talk with police.

“Residents are concerned about their own safety in cooperating with police,” Hernandez said. “They think, ‘If I cooperate with police there’s going to be retaliation,’ not knowing there is confidentiality.”

“It’s assuring that those 122 residents have a priority, have an option to come back to a new home if they so desire,” he said.

Only 68 homes will be built in Water’s Edge, but Des Plaines Gardens residents also would be able to move into 54 additional homes being planned at Liberty Meadow Estates.

Will drones change the way farmers do business?

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com MANHATTAN – There was a time when Manhattan farmer John Kiefner was dead set against ever using email or smartphones.

That’s all changed, he said.

But even as an unmanned aerial vehicle – commonly known as a drone – flew high above his head Wednesday during a demo at the Will County Farm Bureau’s annual Field Day, the corn and soybean farmer was willing to bet he’d never buy one.

But there were others equally willing to bet against him.

“I’d almost want to make a side bet with you on that,” said Doug Yoder, senior director of affiliate and risk management for the Illinois Farm Bureau.

The agriculture industry is becoming more sophisticated with its use of technology – and drones’ ability to monitor crop quality and collect significant data is catching the attention of farmers, Yoder said.

“I think the day is coming when these will be authorized,” Yoder told a group of local farmers who attended the annual event Wednesday.

“If the experts are right and this takes off once we get the rules in place, they expect this to be a multibillion dollar industry instantly and they are projecting [agriculture] to be 83 percent of it.”

But it’ll be some time before farmers are able to deploy drones for commercial use, Yoder said, noting the Federal Aviation Administration extended its rule-making deadline from September 2015 to June 2016.

“We’re unique. Most of our [drone] use is going to be out here in rural settings, away from populated areas. Not flying over people. Not flying over buildings,” Yoder said.

“If we’re out here by ourselves, not interfering with traffic or population, then that poses less of a risk.”

Romeoville trustees review Route 53 gas, diesel stations

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Two gas station developments may help spark more development along Romeoville’s Route 53 corridor.

Romeoville trustees were presented Wednesday with concept plans for a retail development at the northwest corner of Route 53 and Romeo Road, and a diesel fueling station in the triangle corner between Route 53 and Joliet Road.

“More projects are coming along as interest continues go grow in the area,” Mayor John Noak said.

Convenience store

The Romeo Road retail development will consist of 4,400-square-foot Thornton’s convenience store with at least eight gas pumps, with the ability for one or two diesel pumps.

It will sit on 7.5 acres of land east of Resurrection Cemetery. But the convenience store will only take up 2.9 acres at the hard corner of the property.

The rest of the land north of the store is planned to be developed into a 9,000-square-foot car wash, 15,130 square feet in retail space, including an anchor, and a 4,000-square-foot restaurant, according to concept plans.

“Gas stations are part of the equation,” Noak said, mentioning the hesitance from nearby residents to generally support those types of developments, which is common.

Trustees were in support of the project.

“For residents in the area, a restaurant is on the drawing books here,” Trustee Ken Griffin said, adding he can see the vision of the Route 53

corridor unfolding.

Trustee Sue Mickelvitz said she was excited about the project, but she was concerned about the traffic impact of a gas station on the corner.

While a traffic study recently was submitted, Village Manager Steve Gulden said it likely won’t have a significant impact on Route 53 traffic.

Diesel station

The Joliet Road station will include a 7,000-squarefoot retail area with space for two food vendors, including a drive-thru use. It would include five gasoline pumps in the front of the development and six in the back.

Also in the back of the development will be a trucking lane, but no truck parking.

Noak said the village wants to avoid the station becoming a truck stop with long-term parking.

Noak said two billboards currently on-site would be taken down. He also said the triangular shape of the property presents special challenges.

“We have limited types of users because of that,” he said, adding the diesel station would provide needed service to the industrial developments around the Route 53 and Joliet Road intersection.

Trustee Brian Clancy asked if trucks had the capability to turn around to exit to the same street they entered from. Each single entrance off Route 53 and Joliet Road was required by the Illinois Department of Transportation to be a right-in-right-out entrance.

“At this point it’s at a concept level so we don’t have the design,” he said. “But by looking at it, I would doubt it.”

Schneidewind said that equates to a pretty good year considering the unusually wet spring and summer, but that he hoped to see a 160-to-165-bushels-an-acre average.

Yoder said farm subsidy program payments for the 2014 crop production due to farmers next month. The crop loss payments are part of a new federal farm bill that passed in 2014 that serves as a safety net in the event farmers’ crops are wiped out by natural disaster or when revenue dips.

The payments – projected to be $41 an acre of corn in Will County – are calculated using five-year trends in crop price and yield, Yoder said. He added that provisions in 2014 federal farm bill require those

He told farmers Wednesday he expects they will receive some heat from the general public for receiving these payments, which turned out higher than expected. In Kane County, farmers are expected to get about $77 an acre – the max payout one can get from

the federal government.

“I’ll tell you right now, it will be interesting to see how we get attacked by the [nonagricultural] friends of ours out there,” Yoder said. “On top of last year’s record-breaking yields, we’ve got 8 to 10 counties in Illinois that are going to get max payments on top of that. It’ll be interesting how that is portrayed.”

6 Will, Grundy school officials react to low early PARCC scores

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Initial test scores for a new statewide assessment of student academic performance released Wednesday showed less-than-stellar results – but state and some local school officials stressed the results were only preliminary.

District- and student-level scores for the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers will be released in November, Illinois State Board of Education officials said.

The preliminary state-level PARCC results from tests given to students last spring show 26 to 35 percent of students in elementary to high school grade levels met expectations for English language arts and literacy. Between 17 and 31 percent of those same students met mathematics expectations under the test.

Between 2 and 8 percent of students exceeded expectations for English language arts and literacy and between zero and 5 percent of students scored the same for mathematics.

The PARCC exam replaces the Illinois Standard Achievement Test for grade-school students and the Prairie State Achievement Examination for 11th-graders. The exam is based on Common Core standards.

Tom Hernandez, Plainfield School District 202 spokesman, said the results are “very preliminary” and no local results have been given yet. The low scores make sense because it’s a “new test, higher standards,” he said.

JOLIET – Several hours into his interview with police detectives on the day of his wife’s death, Jerry M. Nichols admitted he’d been lying to them.

The Crest Hill man first said he’d been revving the engine of his wife’s car to warm it up before it pinned her against the garage wall.

“We’d been Jerry M. laughing [to- Nichols gether] that morning and I was ‘jacking around’ ... I guess I hit the gas harder than I thought, my foot slipped off the brake,” Nichols told detectives during a recorded interview that was played in court Wednesday during his trial at the Will County Courthouse.

Nichols said he’d pulled the

car up on his wife on previous occasions and received “dirty looks.”

Nichols is charged with murdering Diane Nichols on Jan. 26, 2013. After she was struck by the car a second time, Jerry Nichols called 911 and a Lockport Township firefighter arrived to see him stomp on her face and head, according to earlier testimony.

Defense attorneys said the shock of the car accident triggered the Vietnam veteran’s post-traumatic stress disorder, which led to the stomping.

Will County assistant state’s attorney John Connor said Jerry Nichols planned his wife’s death and researched poison and autopsies on his computer in the months beforehand.

Lockport residents celebrate local police Police officers receive candy, gifts from appreciative residents

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Victoria Crossing subdivision residents in Lockport showered local police with gifts and treats Wednesday to show their appreciation for all the officers do for the community.

Lockport Police Deputy Chief Dave Draksler, who’s been with the department for 28 years, said residents have not in the past visited just to praise officers.

“You can’t compare. It’s incomparable,” Draksler said.

Several residents in west and east parts of Victoria Crossing in Lockport decided to gather gifts – ranging from candy to coffee – for police officers to show them appre-

ciation in light of harsh criticism toward police officers nationwide during the past year.

They came to the Lockport Police Department with their gifts, including some for Citgo, a police dog.

“My husband is in law enforcement and I just feel that with what’s going on, they’re not appreciated. And I think a simple ‘Thank you’ goes a long way,” said Kathy Tucker, a resident and one of the event’s organizers.

They also were given Tootsie Rolls to “roll with the punches,” a Peppermint Patty to “keep cool” and a Snickers to maintain a sense of humor.

Lockport Police Chief Terry Lemming also was given microwave popcorn because residents were “bursting with appreciation,” she said.

SBA to close Coal City disaster loan center Thursday

over ‘inappropriate’ Instagram post

ELWOOD – Questions about Elwood School’s handling of an incident involving a student allegedly posting an “inappropriate” message on Instagram came to a head at the School District 203 board meeting Tuesday night.

After a closed session regarding the matter, the board voted to place the student, a seventh-grade boy, in an interim alternative educational setting for an undecided amount of time, Superintendent Cathie Pezanoski said.

“He will not be coming back in the near future,” board President Matthew Walsh said Wednesday.

Parents at Tuesday’s meeting suggested the student was bullied.

Parents received a communication Tuesday morning from Elwood School Principal Tom McLaughlin stating a student had posted an inap-

propriate message on Instagram over the weekend. The communication stated there was no evidence of an immediate threat to specific students or staff.

However, parents who came to the board meeting said the post had a photo of a gun along with a hit list that named students, said Jenny Siok, a parent who said her eighth-grade son was on the list.

Parents at the meeting were upset at what they said was late notification, considering school officials discovered the online post Monday.

Also, while the school administration denies there being any threat to students, several parents disputed that and said the hit list existed.

“It was a picture of an inappropriate weapon that was posted on Instagram and a message, a general message, not specifically toward any certain student or staff member,” Pezanoski said Wednes-

day. “There was no hit list ever found. And no specific student was ever mentioned on that Instagram [post].”

Walsh said he saw the contents of the post, and he didn’t see any list with students’ names on it. The post has since been deleted, according to parents.

Pezanoski said the reason parents weren’t notified Monday was because the investigation, which included a search of the student’s locker and book bag, wasn’t complete until Tuesday morning.

But Siok, who made the initial report to Elwood police Monday, said parents should have been notified as soon as possible Monday. She also questioned why the district was saying there was no list of students’ names in the post.

“There were students legitimately threatened,” Siok said Wednesday. “By [Tuesday], parents were already aware of the post. And the rumor mill went into motion.”

LOCAL BRIEF Health center to get federal funds

JOLIET – The Will County Community Health Center has received nearly $300,000 from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

The $287,786 were made available through the Affordable Care Act, according to a news release from U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois. The sum is part of about $20.5 million designated for Illinois community health centers.

“This funding ... will help Illinois community health centers expand the care and critical services they offer for those in need throughout our state,”

Durbin said in the release.

The Will County center is among 43 community health organizations collectively receiving more than $13.7 million to increase access to comprehensive primary health care services for 46,917 new patients in the state.

About $6.8 million in additional funds were awarded to another seven Illinois health organizations for infrastructure improvements, including the renovation, expansion or construction of facilities to increase patient capacity and provide more primary and preventative health services.

LOCKPORT – A New Lenox man has died after a motorcycle crash and police are seeking the driver of the car involved.

Robert F. Haag, 35, was riding north about 6:53 p.m. Monday on State Street approaching Eighth Street when a light-colored four-door car turned in front of him, Sgt. Ron Huff said.

Haag lost control of the bike while trying to avoid the car, fell off and struck the side of the sedan, according to Huff.

JOLIET – A basement fire damaged a home Tuesday in the Glenwood Manor neighborhood.

Joliet Fire Department Capt.

Mark Vershay said crews were called at 6:57 p.m. to a blaze at a ranch house in the 600 block of Terry Drive.

“No one was injured. It appears the fire began in the laundry area,” he said.

According to Vershay, smoke was an issue from the lack of windows, but firefighters were able to contain the damage to the basement. The estimated amount of damage was not available Wednesday.

FRANKFORT – An attempted armed robbery was foiled by a Frankfort gas station clerk who used a handgun to scare away a suspect.

At 3 a.m. Tuesday, Will County Sheriff’s Office deputies received a call from a Shell gas station at 7654 W. Lincoln Highway in Frankfort about an attempted robbery, according to Will County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer.

The clerk said a man – who was about 6 feet tall and 175 pounds, wearing a black ski mask and black clothing – walked into the store and pointed a .38 caliber handgun at him, Hoffmeyer said.

The clerk yelled at the robber to leave, and the masked man then fled on foot, Hoffmeyer said. The clerk later admitted to having a handgun himself and pointing it at the suspect, which caused him to depart.

Hoffmeyer said the incident began at 2:55 a.m.

Will County Sheriff’s Office deputies are reviewing video surveillance footage, she said. The incident still is under investigation. Deputies are working with police from Peotone, Frankfort and Mokena to track down the suspect.

OBITUARIES JOANN A. OLSEN

Born: Dec. 10, 1932; in Gardner, IL Died: Sept. 15, 2015; in Plainfield, IL JoAnn A. Olsen (nee Nelson), age 82, a resident of Plainfield, since 1963, formerly of Dwight, passed away Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Lakewood Nursing Home in Plainfield, surrounded by her family, with whom she laughed with, lived for and loved. She was born December 10, 1932 in Gardner.

Beloved mother of Clayton (Debbie) Olsen of Plainfield, IL, Susan Wilson of Crest Hill, IL and Chris (Vickie) Olsen of Dwight, IL; adored grandmother of Corinne (Danny) Wicke, Cerena (Greg) Kovanda, Jennifer Ahern, Julie (Jeff) Edgar, Jim Ahern and Jaimie (fiancé, Jimmy Knapp) Ahern, AJ Olsen, Allie Olsen, Mandy Keating, Shannon (Steve) Mahnke and Michael (Emma) Keating; great-grandmother of Mikayla and Alexa, Marc (Christine), Christopher and Hannah, Joey and Kaitlin, Nicholas, Macy and the late Madison Ahern-Knapp; great-great grandmother of Haylee and Dustin; devoted daughter of the late Alvin and Bertha Nelson; dear sister of Shirley (David) Morgan of Pontiac, IL and the late Jimmy Nelson; fond aunt, great-aunt, cousin and friend of many, including Joann Gray, former spouse of Raymond (Joyce) Olsen of Minnesota.

JoAnn grew up on a farm in the Dwight/Gardner, area and was a graduate of Dwight High School.

She worked as a realtor in Plainfield for 32 years, first with Century 21 and later with Coldwell Banker.

JoAnn also worked as an Independent Beauty Consultant for Mary Kay, Inc. A farm girl at heart, JoAnn was a skilled horseback rider in her younger days and loved horses and cats.

Florence J. “Flo” Pazulinec (nee Henry), age 90, a longtime Joliet area resident, passed away peacefully Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at Sunny Hill Nursing Home. Born April 5, 1925 in Toledo, Ohio, she was the daughter of William Henry and Grace (nee Monts) Henry.

Flo was raised in Rockdale, attending Rockdale grade school and was a graduate of Joliet Township High School.

Survived by three daughters, Sandra (the late Ray Hooper) Kinnett of Crossville, TN, Debra (Terry) Snyder and Bonnie Johnson; two sons, Lawrence (Joy) Tyda and Mark (Karen) Fitzpatrick-Tyda; two step-sons, Robert Pazulinec and

Scott Pazulinec; one step-daughter, Linda (Roderick) Padilla; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Preceded in death by her first husband, Lawrence Tyda, Sr.; second husband, Robert Pazulinec; her parents; stepfather, Clifford Swarthout; and two brothers, William and Harold Henry.

Flo retired from Sunny Hill Nursing Home after many years of upbeat service as their Activities Director. She especially enjoyed transporting residents by bus for ice cream and sight-seeing adventures as well as running the ceramic shop located in the lower level of Sunny Hill.

A long-time, active member of the Ladies Auxiliary at VFW Cantigny Post #367 and First and Santa Cruz Lutheran Church where she loved singing in the choir and lending a hand whenever needed. She was a former member of WOTM, Chapter 84 and the Ladies Auxiliary of Joliet Elks Lodge #296.

Funeral Services for Florence J. Pazulinec will be held Saturday, September 19, 2015 at First and Santa Cruz Lutheran Church, 55 W. Benton St. (at Ottawa St.) Joliet, where she will lie in-state from 10:30 a.m. until services begin at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery at a later date. JOANNE WORDEN JoAnne Worden, age 83, of Wilmington, and originally Bellingham, Washington, passed away September 15, 2015 at Presence St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

Mary JoAnne was a daughter of the late Walter and Grace Riffe.

After high school, she went on to complete nurses training, and on September 19, 1953, JoAnne married Raymond F. Worden. She was a full time mom and later grandma, as well as a registered nurse in obstetrics. Most recently JoAnne was employed with LifeTouch School Photography, from where she retired (2004).

A wonderful cook, who always

enjoyed arts and crafts, gardening, fishing, sewing and reading, JoAnne will most be remembered as one who was always helping others.

Survivors include her husband, Raymond; children, Mary Jo (Craig) Anderson of West Lafayette, IN, Scott (Jeanne) Worden of Lake Geneva, WI, Marty (Mary) Worden of Hartland, WI, Kim Ganzer (Bill Leslie) of Chicago; son-in-law, Robert Ganzer of Australia; (15) grandchildren; (14) great-grandchildren, with another expected in February, and numerous nieces and nephews.

JoAnne was preceded by her parents and two brothers, Don and Noel Riffe.

Visitation will be held at First Assembly of God, 1741 Essington Rd. in Joliet on Friday, September 18, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. until time of services 12:00 p.m. Pastor Jim Arnold will officiate, and a private family burial will follow Monday in Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

Illinois to fund services for disabled kids amid budget feud

CHICAGO – Illinois will begin paying for services to help young children with developmental disabilities and to assist seniors in their homes despite not having a budget in place and warnings from lawmakers that the state is spending billions more than it’s taking in.

Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger said Wednesday her office determined the early intervention services, provided to children age 3 and younger, should have been paid for under a previously issued consent decree that requires some social services be funded. In a separate action, a federal judge ruled a program that aims to help seniors avoid costly nursing home care is covered by a court order requiring state payment.

Munger said she learned last week the program was “slipping through the cracks” and some providers were about to suspend programs. After consulting with attorneys, she decided payments to providers should be processed immediately and are a “relatively low amount” compared with the state’s overall budget crisis.

U.S. judge rules Illinois must fund senior-aid program

SPRINGFIELD – A federal judge has ruled a program providing in-home services to seniors is covered by Medicaid and should be funded even though there’s no Illinois budget because of a political stalemate.

Stephanie Altman is with the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law. She said U.S. District Judge Joan Lefkow issued the ruling in Chicago on Wednesday.

Munger says she’s not a ‘mouthpiece’ for Gov. Rauner

CHICAGO – Illinois Comptroller Leslie Munger said she’s not just a “mouthpiece” for Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Munger said during a Wednesday news conference that some people have suggested she’s promoting a business-friendly agenda similar to Rauner’s because he tells her to. She said: “I say these things because I believe it.”

Rauner appointed Munger to fill Judy Baar Topinka’s term after her death last year. The Republican former businesswoman is seeking her first full term in 2016.

Hearing to consider 8 conditions for medical marijuana

CHICAGO – A public hearing will be held next month to hear evidence for adding eight medical conditions to the list of what can be treated in the Illinois medical marijuana pilot program.

Anyone who wants to present evidence in favor of adding one of the eight conditions must submit a statement to the Illinois Department of Public Health by email by 5 p.m. Sept.

30 or by mail postmarked by Sept. 28.

Gov. Bruce Rauner’s administration has so far rejected recommendations to add new conditions to the list. But an advisory board still is scheduled

to hold its public hearing Oct. 7 in Countryside. The board was appointed by former Gov. Pat Quinn.

The conditions being considered were submitted by public petition in July. They are: autism, chronic pain due to trauma, chronic pain syndrome, chronic post-operative pain, intractable pain, irritable bowel syndrome, osteoarthritis and post-traumatic stress disorder.

U of Illinois faculty to challenge policy

URBANA – Faculty members at the University of Illinois campus in Champaign-Urbana plan to vote on a resolution next week that would ask the school’s board of trustees to delay the start of a policy instituting back-

ground checks on new hires.

The Senate of the Urbana-Champaign Campus, a group of about 200 faculty members, is scheduled to meet Monday.

The resolution also says the policy doesn’t meet American Association of University Professors standards and isn’t mentioned in all active job postings.

The board of trustees approved the policy last week. It said all prospective faculty and many other University of Illinois job applicants will have to go through background checks. Right now only applicants for jobs in high-security positions require such checks.

Interim Provost Ed Feser said he’s working to balance liability with being fair to job candidates.

SANTIAGO, Chile – A powerful magnitude-8.3 earthquake hit off Chile’s northern coast Wednesday night, causing buildings to sway in Santiago and other cities and sending people running into the streets.

Authorities reported one death in a town north of the capital.

Four aftershocks above magnitude-6 and other strong shakes rattled the region as tsunami alarms sounded in the port of Valparaiso in the first major tremor since a powerful quake and tsunami killed hundreds in 2010 and leveled part of the city of Concepcion.

Officials ordered people to evacuate low-lying areas along the 2,400 miles of Chile’s Pacific shore, from Puerto Aysen north to Arica. Fishing boats headed out to sea, and cars streamed inland carrying people to higher ground. Santiago’s main airport was evacuated as a precaution.

The death came in addition to an elderly, disabled woman whose body was found Sunday in the ruins of her Lake County home about 100 miles north of San Francisco.

Authorities were searching nearby for a 69-year-old Leonard Neft who was reported missing by his family. His burned-out car was discovered on a route he would have used to escape.

GOP hopefuls debate Russia, immigration – and Trump

– Along with the back-andforth bickering over Donald Trump, the Republican primary took a substantive and serious turn in Wednesday’s prime-time debate, with candidates wrangling over Russia, Iran, immigration and gay marriage.

The policy focus marked a shift for a campaign that so far has revolved around the rise of Trump. The brash billionaire still was a target for the 10 other candidates joining him on stage, but the heavier policy focus had the effect of temporarily sidelining Trump after the debate’s opening moments.

For most of the participants, the shift appeared to come as a welcome relief.

The policy debates still exposed rifts within the Republican Party, particularly the split between political outsiders and candidates with long résumés in Washington and governor’s mansions. Trump and Carly Fiorina, the former Hewlett-Packard executive and only woman in the GOP

field, emphasized how their business backgrounds would help them negotiate with difficult world leaders, including Russia’s president.

“Vladimir Putin would get the message,” said Fiorina, who was joining the main debate for the first time after a strong performance in an undercard event last month.

Trump, who has capitalized on his outsider appeal, said the three senators in the field – Marco Rubio, Rand Paul and Ted Cruz – bore some responsibility for the unabated violence in Syria. He said as president, he would have gone in with “tremendous force” when the Syrian regime used chemical weapons.

On Iran, the candidates were split on whether they would tear up President Barack Obama’s nuclear accord with Iran if elected. Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Ohio Gov. John Kasich took a measured approach, saying ripping up a deal agreed to not only by the U.S. but also several allies was not a strategy for stopping Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapon.

In an exchange on gay

marriage and religious liberty, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee argued forcefully for the right of Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis to defy the Supreme Court’s decision legalizing gay marriage. “I thought that everyone here passed ninth grade civics. The courts can’t legislate,” he said. “I thought we had three branches of government.”

Huckabee declined to criticize Bush for saying Davis did not have the right to deny gays marriage licenses. Bush said he supports defending the rights of religious people to refuse to endorse gay marriage, but he said someone else in Davis’ office should sign the certificates since the Supreme Court ruling is the law of the land.

“I think there needs to be accommodation for someone acting on their faith,” he said.

Even as Trump faded somewhat in the policy discussions, he was hardly invisible in the debate. He praised himself while deriding and scoring his rivals in the opening minutes of the debate at the Regan Presidential Library in southern California.

When compared to 2013, nearly 9 million people gained coverage. A recent government survey that includes data from the first three months of this year shows that the uninsured rate continued to fall in 2015.

WASHINGTON – The wallets of America’s middle class and poorest aren’t seeing any extra money, the U.S. Census reported Wednesday, a financial stagnation experts said may be fueling political dissent this campaign season.

The Census Bureau, in its annual look at poverty and income in the United States, said both the country’s median income and poverty rate were unchanged statistically in 2014 from the previous year.

Median income – the point where half of the households have income below it and half have income above it – showed no statistically significant change, despite the small drop to $53,700 in 2014 from 2013’s $54,500. Median income is a broad measure of the economic health of the middle class.

The poverty rate also showed no statistically significant change. In 2014, the poverty rate in the United States was 14.8 percent, which was the same as in 2013. The poverty rate had dropped in 2013 from 15 percent in 2012, the first such drop since 2006.

There were 46.7 million people in poverty, which is also a statistically similar num-

ber from the previous four years. In 2014, a family with two adults and two children was categorized as in poverty if their income was less than $24,008.

Census officials said they weren’t surprised by the flat numbers. “It’s not unusual for it not to go down two years in a row,” said Trudi J. Renwick, chief of the Poverty Statistics Branch in the bureau’s Housing and Household Economic Statistics Division.

The White House focused on the fact that some of the numbers increased, although census officials noted the change was not significant.

“Real median income for family households rose $408 in 2014, while real median income for non-family households also rose but overall median household income declined,” administration officials said in a news release.

Republicans argued that the stagnating numbers reveal a need for change to the country’s welfare programs.

“Our current approach to fighting poverty, though well-intended, is failing too many Americans,” said House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, a Wisconsin Republican. “This disappointing data, five years

The number that jumped out at Tim Reilly, Lincoln-Way High School District 210 assistant superintendent for curriculum, was the zero percent of high school students exceeding expectations in math and only 17 percent meeting expectations.

“That’s a massive problem with the test,” Reilly said.

Tony Smith, state superintendent of education, warned school districts in a Sept. 11 letter of low PARCC results com-

pared to the ISAT and PSAE. In 2013 and 2014, more than 40 percent of students failed the old exams statewide.

Smith’s letter stated the numbers are not final and told school leaders he does not “want anyone to use these results to shame teachers or schools.”

Reilly said he was concerned local test scores will not be released until late fall, giving districts a shorter amount of time to adjust. He also was concerned about how data between schools will compare since districts were allowed to test any group of students they wanted when it came to mathematics.

Pat Halloran, Morris Community High School superintendent, said he knows when Smith spoke in Naperville on Sept. 1 he questioned the reliability of the results.

“I have no response at this time until I am able to see how my own students performed,” Halloran said.

According to ISBE, the first year of PARCC testing will serve as the baseline for future test scores. In response to school districts, the exam will return next spring with a “shorter, simplified format to improve the testing process.”

City of Brotherly Love gets ready for the pope “He’s accessible.”

Lizanne Pando and I are talking about the World Meeting of Families soon to be held in Philadelphia – Pope Francis’ reason for coming to the United States later this month – and she can’t help but talk about her boss, the archbishop of Philadelphia, Charles J. Chaput.

“He answers emails. He’ll give you advice. He’ll tell you what he’s thinking.”

She adds: “He’s done a lot of structural changes that were not easy tasks. He’s very consistent ... thoughtful ... and his focus is very much on the poor. He just does it.

The church here does it.”

Pando is director of communications for the World Meeting of Families, but her enthusiasm comes from a deeper place than a mere sense of professional duty.

Philadelphia is in the final days of preparing for the meeting, an international, ecumenical congress focused on families and the love that binds them together. Like Pando, the City of Brotherly Love is ecstatic to welcome Pope Francis – as you can see from the new pop-up store in Center City lined with papal bobblehead dolls.

“Pope Francis has been talking about little else but the family since becoming pope,” Pando observes.

Indeed, the pope has stressed the importance of the family unit in fostering a more stable, loving society.

Pando sees the upcoming meeting as a chance to emphasize and broaden this message: “I think this will give the opportunity for every family to tell their story.”

“People who come to the World Meeting of Families office and work there – they’ve never been to an office before where people so freely pray,” Pando says. “They are so freed by that – that they are allowed to. I think families will feel that freedom.”

About 17,000 people are registered for the World Meeting of Families. They will pray together, listen together, serve the poor together.

Some of the “tough stuff” includes scandals and abuse, and Pando expresses her sorrow for the victims of unspeakable crimes that have come to light. The church is in a much healthier, safer place now.

For the faithful who felt betrayed, this is a time of healing.

Pando tells me about a woman who goes to the Miraculous Medal Shrine in Philadelphia’s nearby Germantown section every week. She cries at the foot of a replica of the Pieta there and leaves her burdens there, with Jesus and Mary. Pando observes: “There is a lot of sorrow.

There’s illness. Personal attacks.

Loss of loved ones. Loss of jobs. Loss of homes. Addictions.”

“And in Pope Francis, they see a religious leader they can relate to,” Pando says.

“Blessed are the peacemakers,” she adds, describing the pope’s attempts to bring people together.

In a highly polarized political atmosphere about marriage and family, can the pope’s message of unity succeed? Can he help bring calm to our conversations and debates and peace to our hearts? It won’t take a miracle, but it will require us to listen to someone who may say what we need to hear. There’s hope there.

It’s going to be amazing, Pando insists. See the faith of the people of Philadelphia – it might help us all.

To the Editor: I recently watched one of the episodes on the Civil War produced by PBS. In the episode, it quoted the synoptic Gospel phrase that was used by Abraham Lincoln on June 16, 1858, to the Republican State Convention of Illinois, in which Lincoln said, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”

I thought about how that phrase seemed to be so true today, when the American people – through their apparent choice of radical presidential candidates from both the liberal and the conservative side – seem destined to divide the country.

But as I pondered this polarizing phenomenon, I thought: What is the “house” that appears to be in peril? Is there a common thread that Americans all share? Do Americans share anything in common anymore?

Religion played a very important part of the fabric of American thought. Not so much anymore.

Hard work and honesty also seemed to be revered. Not so much anymore.

A common language immigrants wanted to learn, and were proud to know, seemed to hold people together. Not so much anymore.

A love of the Constitution, and an understanding of the separation of powers, seemed commonplace in every American’s heart. No so much anymore.

A true feeling of independence, and self-reliance. Not so much anymore.

Alas, there is no house to save anymore.

To the Editor: Telephones are a vital connection to friends, family, jobs, medical services and schools. I enjoy working to help keep people connected.

For many in Illinois, however, the cost of a telephone may be out of reach. Without a phone, they may be left to worry about what will happen in an emergency or how they will stay connected to caregivers, school administrators and employers.

I want your readers to know that there is a program that can provide assistance for eligible families and individuals struggling to afford a phone.

The Lifeline program is a federally funded program offering a partial subsidy on the monthly cost of one landline or cellphone per household. In addition to the federal program, Illinois has a program, funded entirely through voluntary donations, to help with the cost of installing a landline phone.

As a member of the nonprofit board that oversees the landline programs in Illinois, I am joining officials in many other states to raise awareness of these programs during Lifeline Awareness Week through Sept. 20.

I also want to thank the many Illinois citizens whose voluntary donations allow these programs to have a broader impact than they would otherwise.

Bolingbrook, Plainfield East battle to scoreless draw in nonconference play

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – As the boys soccer coaches from Bolingbrook and Plainfield East keep looking for the right combination on offense, they can count on a solid play on defense.

That gives both Jamie Clemmons and Cosimo Patano hope that when the offense does arrive, good things are in store for both the Raiders and Bengals.

Defense was on display in Wednesday’s nonconference match between the two. With strong winds affecting each side’s attack for a half, good scoring chances were few and far between as the squads settled for a scoreless draw.

“We’re definitely playing pretty well, and we have some good shutouts, but now it’s just about trying to finish and putting the ball in the back of the net,” East’s Patano said.

“That will take some of the

pressure off of our back line. I think we’ve been playing some decent soccer, but the scores haven’t been reflecting that. I think it’s just a matter of finding the right players that complement each other. We have to pick it up and execute.

“On defense, we have Josh George, a track guy who’s got some wheels, so it’s difficult to beat him in a foot race; and Edgar Flores is smart and reads the game well and anticipates everything. Jake Stevens is a

great defender one on one, and he’s also a threat going forward and in the midfield. Griffin Mitchell makes the game for us at times, since a lot of the play goes through him. As a unit, we stay compact, get the job done and don’t give up.”

East (2-3-4) enjoyed a strong wind advantage in the first half, and it also kept the ball on the ground after the break and managed to get a few second-half opportunities.

Meanwhile, Bolingbrook

(8-1-2) figured to capitalize when it played with the wind at its back in the second half, but things just didn’t seem to click.

“We played lackadaisically,” Clemmons said. “The guys didn’t seem to be real interested in wanting to play today. It was a little light and slow in the pregame, and that carried over to the game. I felt at halftime with the wind behind us

No doubt, the Celtics need to have some positive things happen, beginning with a victory in Friday’s nonconference game at Marmion. Mike Markasovic, a receiver by trade but also a quality running back, is likely to have the ball in his hands more often in Warfield’s absence.

At JCA, meanwhile, the unbeaten Hilltoppers, who are No. 1 in the Herald-News rankings, plan to go with sophomore Ke’Von Johnson as the replacement for Davis when they travel Friday night to Arlington Heights to take on St. Viator at Forest View Stadium.

1. Joliet Catholic (3-0): The Hilltoppers continue to win, keyed by excellent line play on both sides of the ball and the explosive running of area rushing leader Michael Johnson. But fellow wingback Harry Davis, out with a fracture in his ankle, will be a huge loss.

2. Lincoln-Way West (3-0): Warriors got the job done last week against rival Lincoln-Way Central as running back Gabe Montalvo went for well more than 200 yards.

3. Lincoln-Way East (2-1): An impressive victory over Joliet West suggests the Griffins have recovered from a season-opening loss to Oak Park-River Forest. Quarterback Brandon Bauer is doing a good job running the offense.

4. Plainfield North (2-1): The Tigers easily could be 3-0 but for red-zone failures against Bishop McNamara. An interesting Southwest Prairie battle is looming Friday at Plainfield South.

5. Bolingbrook (1-2): The Raiders’ 38-20 loss to Sandburg was a bit of a stunner. They are hoping the recovery happens quickly as Joliet West visits Friday night.

6. Lemont (2-1): The Indians feel they should have beaten Richards on Friday after building a two-touchdown lead at the half. But it didn’t happen, as the Bulldogs came back to win, 28-24.

7. Minooka (3-0): The Indians move up a few spots in the rankings with their unbeaten record. The big test is on tap Friday when they visit perennial Southwest Prairie kingpin Oswego.

We begin with high school football before touching other bases: The full extent of the knee injury suffered last week by Providence Catholic running back Richie Warfield against Mount Carmel will not be known until late this week, but he might be out a few weeks, anyway.

Joliet Catholic wingback Harry Davis suffered a fracture in his ankle last week, and the best-case scenario probably is that he will not return until the playoffs.

That’s the nature of football. Sometimes, it becomes a case of next man up.

Warfield is the hub of the Providence offense. And with the Celtics standing 0-3 and having three Chicago Catholic Blue games remaining, qualifying for the playoffs might be difficult for the defending Class 7A

What are youth and middle age in the NFL today?

The NFL Players Association loves to promote the idea of the average career of an NFL player being 3.3 years, but Roger Goodell disagrees.

The commissioner recently explained the union’s numbers include everybody with a contract; but, in fact, the average career of players who start their rookie season on an NFL team’s 53-man roster is just under six years.

Either way, it suggests players need to peak somewhere between their second and fourth seasons.

On Wednesday, Vic Fangio offered an interesting perspective on the development of young players when asked about Arizona wide receiver John Brown.

“Last year was his process of developing and playing more and more as the season wore on,” Fangio said. “Now you go through a second offseason and a second training camp, I think that’s where you see guys flourish.”

If that’s the case, it’s reasonable to assume Kyle Long, Jonathan Bostic, Marquess Wilson and the recently acquired Patrick Omameh – the only third-year players on the roster – should be pretty close

And second-year players Kyle Fuller, Ego Ferguson, Will Sutton, Ka’Deem Carey, Brock Vereen, Patrick O’Donnell, Charles Leno Jr., Christian Jones, Demontre Hurst, Terrance Mitchell and Lamin Barrow – along with the rookies – are the kids we really should be focused on this season.

Alshon Jeffery and Shea McClellin are the only fourth-year players on the roster.

Like Long, Jeffery has established himself as a core player, but the numbers suggest McClellin is quite a longshot at this point.

It seems likely we’ll have to wait until next year on Kevin White.

Certainly, Bears fans will continue to root for the beloved each and every week this season.

But if there are to be better times ahead, the good-times arrival will be dictated by – and our attention should be focused, win or lose, on the progress of – kids such as Bostic, Wilson, Fuller, Ferguson, Sutton, Jones, Mitchell, Eddie Goldman and Jeremy Langford in particular, and their abilities to become difference makers.

If they can’t, things are likely to get worse before they get better.

While we certainly hope they win more than they lose, how many games this team can win or keep close is, for the most part, irrelevant.

It seems we all enjoyed watching the Bears exceed almost all expectations Sunday against the Packers.

Admit it, folks, they were a lot better than anyone believed them to be. And it has raised hopes throughout the city this week this team is better than we thought it was.

But, realistically, is that where our focus should be right now?

No, it’s not.

I had these guys pegged at 6-10; but even if they win seven, eight or nine games, it will – of course – make for a few more enjoyable Sundays. But what is it worth in the grand scheme of things?

At the end of the day, these Bears most likely aren’t going to the playoffs – certainly aren’t going to the Super Bowl – and this team does need to be rebuilt.

That being the case, what we really should be focused on today, tomorrow and throughout this season is how many of the rookies, first-, secondand third-year players have a chance to develop and become core players and contributors to a team that can contend for all the marbles.

Many of the most important core players on this team are veterans such as Matt Forte, Jermon Bushrod, Will Montgomery, Jeremiah Ratliff, Jared Allen, Antrel Rolle and Alan Ball who are either finishing or past their primes and unlikely to be here in two or three years when this team might be ready.

Middle-aged veterans such as Martellus Bennett, Matt Slauson, Pernell McPhee, Lamarr Houston and Willie Young offer a little more promise, but it’s

Kane on camp roster amid investigation The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Patrick Kane was expected to join his Blackhawks teammates at training camp this week as he awaits the results of a sexual assault investigation.

“Based on what I know, Patrick Kane will be at camp tomorrow,” Kane’s agent, Pat Brisson, wrote Wednesday in a text message to The Associated Press after the Hawks released their camp roster.

Camp begins Friday on the Notre Dame campus in South Bend, Indiana.

Kane is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in her 20s last month at his offseason residence near his hometown of Buffalo, New York, a person familiar with the investigation has told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because police have not revealed details of the case.

Kane has not been charged, but the case has shadowed the Blackhawks over the past month.

dunland@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Jeff Ohner of New Lenox, a parishioner at the Catholic Community of St. Jude in New Lenox, is using his skills as a hobbyist woodworker to help the church’s associate pastor, the Rev. Don Bates – and he is thrilled to do it.

Ohner has created three oak kiosks to display Bates’ collection of illustrations titled “The Wedding of Word and Image: Illustrations of Passages from the Confessions of St. Augustine.” The exhibit will be available for viewing Saturday as part of ShareFest New Lenox. “[Bates] has done so much for my wife and me, and has been such an inspiration to us,” Ohner said. “This is a labor of love.”

The 80 illustrations are not for sale, Bates said, as he intends for them to be a legacy for the Augustinian order.

Four of the illustrations are on loan to the Augustinian Motherhouse in Rome.

As far as Bates, an Augustinian priest, knows, his illustrations are the first time that “Confessions” – the autobiography of St. Augustine of Hippo, who lived from 354 to 430 – has been told with images.

Bates said he began the project in 1980 and completed it around 1995. He feels the illustrations might help people grasp the meaning of the written words from “one of the first great thinkers after the fall of Rome” and “one of the first great theologians of Christianity.”

“It’s a world-class piece of literature,” he said, “but for some people, it’s very difficult to read.”

The interest in depicting “Confessions” stemmed from several elements: Bates’ Augustinian background, his

degrees in art and humanities, and his later study of art therapy as a means of self-understanding.

“Confessions,” Bates said, is St. Augustine’s conversion story of sinner to Christian and the self-knowledge Augustine received during this process. Telling the story through art made sense to Bates, especially after a priest asked him to create several black-and-white illustrations

relating to “Confessions” for a newsletter, although Bates had other ideas.

“I found [black and white] too confining,” Bates said. “I wanted to be able to use reds and golds and Mylar. I like to play around with different media. ... I felt these illustrations should have a bit of playfulness in them, as well.”

The “canvas” manifests that playfulness. Bates recalled his hip replacement surgeries

and the X-rays he needed.

The X-rays were contained in cardboard sleeves, which Bates decided would be perfect for the illustrations. An X-ray technician gave Bates an entire box of them, he said.

The result is a montage-collage group of pictures averaging 14 by 17 inches each. They portray Augustine’s torment and joy through drawing, spray paint, knots, labyrinths, the pasting of black and white

Bates feels Mylar’s mirror-like qualities show the introspection of the spiritual journey.

“Augustine’s story is the story of every man,” Bates said, “and his story is my story.”

Bates said a Presbyterian minister friend viewed “Confessions” as the first book about psychology because of its analytic nature.

“He was bound by his own sinfulness, his own humanity,” Bates said, “and he had to work through it.”

Lockport pianist to play for Pope Francis in Washington, D.C. Know more

For that reason, Lockport resident and pianist John-Paul Kaplan will perform songs from his latest CD, “Merciful & Gracious,” for the pope Sept.

24 in Washington, D.C., during the pope’s apostolic visit to the United States.

Kaplan said the invitation to play resulted from a program he and internationally renowned Irish tenor Mark Forrest presented in various locations in the nation’s capital.

“Catholic Charities asked us to come and perform for the Holy Father,” Kaplan said.

Kaplan said he will play for Pope Francis from 11:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, after the pope addresses the U.S. Congress. That’s all Kaplan said he knows so far.

“I was just told to be at this location at 9 a.m.,” he said.

Although Kaplan began playing classical piano at age 7 and recorded his first independent CD in 2006, it was his 2007 award for Album of the Year and nomination for New Artist of the Year from the United

One program the pair offers

Kaplan said part of concert proceeds is donated to the Faith and Family Foundation, which Forrest, the father of eight, founded in 1999 to support families who have children with special needs.

One of Forrest’s children was born with a heart condition and lived only five days; another has a rare nerve condition that has left him blind and in need of a wheelchair.

Kaplan said he is active in the foundation.

“That’s my mission,” Kaplan said, “to help others.”

Although Kaplan said he also plays jazz, including the works of George Gershwin and Cole Porter, he ultimately gives the glory to God. Kaplan credits his solid foundation in the Catholic faith to good upbringing and his education at Northridge Preparatory School – an all-boys school in Niles he attended from sixth to 12th grade.

“I am blessed to have this talent,” Kaplan said. “I just want to use it.”

enough of the vitamin B12 in the diet is absorbed by the gut. There are rare conditions (besides pernicious anemia) that are inherited. Conditions that reduce the amount of acid produced in the stomach can do it. Examples are chronic gastritis, or surgical removal of part of the stomach to treat an ulcer.

Long-term use of powerful acid-suppressing pills – such as omeprazole (Prilosec) or cimetidine (Tagamet) – can cause B12 deficiency. So can the commonly prescribed medicine for diabetes, metformin (Glucophage). When metformin is the culprit, adding a calcium supplement can fix the problem.

Other diseases of the ileum besides Crohn’s disease (which we discussed in yesterday’s column) can cause low B12 levels. Examples are infections of the ileum, such as by tuberculosis or possibly by HIV, or cancer of the ileum (lymphoma).

A really weird cause of vitamin B12 deficiency is a fish tapeworm infection. In developing nations where people eat raw fish, it is not uncommon. The youngest worms (larvae) inside the fish get swallowed. Then they start growing inside a person’s intestine.

These worms like vitamin B12, and they “steal” it before our ileum can absorb it.

I’ll bet you never imagined there could be so many different causes of a vitamin deficiency.

Fortunately, vitamin B12 deficiency usually is easy to treat.

Wednesday’s column I began to answer a reader’s question about the different causes of vitamin B12 deficiency, and whether to treat them with shots or pills.

Today, we continue a discussion of the many conditions that can interfere with the ability of the small intestine (the part called the ileum) to absorb vitamin B12 from the foods you eat.

As we get older, some people have more trouble absorbing the vitamin B12 in their food during digestion.

Vitamin B12 in food is like leaves on a tree: It needs to be shaken loose.

Stomach acid (and another stomach chemical called pepsin) are what shake vitamin B12 loose from food, allowing it to be absorbed by the ileum.

I’m one of those folks who don’t absorb much of the vitamin B12 in food.

Even though I eat plenty of B12-rich foods, I also need to take B12 pills.

That fixes the problem.

Most people with this condition are like me: Vitamin B12 pills are enough, and we don’t need shots. And, sometimes, just increasing the B12-rich foods in your diet is enough – you don’t even need pills.

B12 is found naturally only in animal products.

Examples include meat, fish, poultry, eggs and milk.

Many cereals are fortified with the synthetic form of the vitamin.

If you are deficient because you are not getting enough B12 in your diet, or because of aging, pills may not always be enough.

If your blood levels of B12 are very low, your doctor may prescribe vitamin B12 shots for a while. It’s easier to “fill your tank” with shots.

Then, once your blood levels are normal, you can switch to pills.

Dear Abby: Last year I gave my new (at that time) girlfriend, “Alyssa,” a pair of earrings for her birthday.

They were in a box from a department store marked “fine jewelry.” She loved them and became emotional in expressing her gratitude.

When she opened the box I explained that they were her birthstone – sapphires – but WHITE sapphires. In her excitement she must have missed that part.

The earrings are large – maybe one carat apiece.

Yesterday I overheard my granddaughter ask Alyssa if they were real diamonds, and Alyssa told her yes!

I kept my mouth shut when she said it, but now I understand why she was so excited when she first saw them. She cherishes the earrings and has told me numerous times she will never take them off.

I want to make this right, but I’m afraid she’ll feel embarrassed because she must have told her girlfriends and family I gave her diamond earrings – which I didn’t.
