JOLIET – A business plan that would allow a gas station on the edge of town to decrease what it charges for fuel while increasing what it charges for convenience store items was approved by a divided City Council on Tuesday.

The nine-year agreement with Mickey Oil Company would provide a Motor Fuels Tax rebate in exchange for an increased sales tax rate, said City Attorney Jeff Plyman.

The plan is designed to let the gas station, Mickey’s One Stop, 1415 Plainfield Road, compete with stations in Crest Hill that are able to charge lower rates for gasoline due to that city’s tax structure. Mickey’s is near the boundary between the two cities.

Under the plan, Mickey’s would get the incentive for the first three years of the agree-

ment, Plyman said. The council would have the option to vote against the agreement in the fourth year if tax revenues fall below a benchmark, Plyman said.

The council could revisit the agreement annually for the fifth through ninth years.

The pact could automatically be canceled if Mickey’s fails to achieve the benchmark for two consecutive years following the sixth year of the agreement.

Plyman said that city staff had advised against making the agreement.

Mike Hansen, an attorney representing Mickey Oil Company, said the agreement was necessary to prevent his client from going out of business.

“If you want to call it a compromise, you can call it a compromise, but we believe it gets the job done,” Hansen said.

The council, which has

voted unanimously on most matters brought before it this year, approved the pact on a 7-2 vote, with Councilman Mike Turk and Mayor Tom Giarrante casting the two no votes.

Turk said he had a problem with the three-year review cycle, plus was concerned about staff objections. Giarrante echoed his concerns about the three-year cycle.

Councilwoman Jan Quillman asked for a second explanation of the somewhat byzantine agreement before casting a reluctant yes vote. “I just think we’re opening the door here,” Quillman said.

Councilman John Gerl said the agreement was a “win-win” for Mickey’s and the city.

Development’s altered plans get approval from plan commission

By VIKAAS SHANKER PLAINFIELD – The plan commission felt satisfied enough to recommend approval of a 16-unit residential development after representatives of the developer answered several questions from commissioners and residents.

The development appeared before the plan commission for a third time. Residents from the Dunmoor Estates and Shenandoah subdivisions previously spoke about how the development is substandard and would lower their property values.

“I’m happy a number of issues we brought up were addressed,” Commissioner Richard Kiefer said.

The commission approved an altered plan that added brick siding on all sides of the home, several elevations on five different models, forming a new homeowners association and a neighborhood

Judy Kreiser and Kathy Garthus, who each live near the 2800 Schweitzer Road facility, voiced their opposition to the facility during the public hearing. Both expressed concerns about light, smells, truck traffic and potential crime problems associated with the facility.

The developer also reduced the number of lots from 18 to 16. The density is still higher than the low residential-zoned property. But village staff said the developer has provided enough compliance with residential design standards and other beautification measures.

The original plan called for a minimum lot size of 10,635 square feet and a maximum of 13,500 square feet. The starting price for the homes would be $350,000 with the options of adding on features that could put the houses above $400,000.

Those specifications were not changed in the new plan.

Neighboring residents said their homes are significantly larger and worth much more than what the developer proposed.

“We do appreciate that we’re going to start building again,” said nearby resident

Dan Dilday. “I’m still hesitant of the fact that we’re still keeping standards low when it comes to density.”

The commission supported the preliminary and final plats as well as a special use permit for the development with a 5-1 vote. Commissioner John Green voted against the measure, and Commissioner Ed O’Rourke was absent.

The annexation agreement for the development was passed, 6-0. The development will need to obtain final approval by the village board.

She kept saying she was going to be an elementary school teacher, despite friends and family telling her otherwise.

Munguia became a stellar student at Joliet schools.

“One of my parents’ friends always called me ‘teacher’ in Spanish, maestra,” she said.

“And he still calls me it to this day.”

Now in her freshman year of college, Munguia is on track to become a teacher as a MERIT scholar at the College of Education at the University of St. Francis. The distinction includes a four-year, full-ride scholarship to the university and mentorship by faculty and staff.

MERIT program MERIT, short for Multicultural Education Recruitment in Teaching, is a relatively new joint grant-funded program with USF, Joliet School District 86 and Joliet Township High School District 204.

Its aim is to produce more minority teachers in the two public school districts, to better reflect an increasingly diverse student body.

One Joliet Township high school graduate is selected annually for the program. After the student graduates from USF, he or she works in either of the school districts for five years.

“It’s a teacher-in-training program,” said Tracy Spesia, program coordinator. “We offer them the opportunity to go

Spesia said the scholarships are given to Joliet Township High School seniors who are students of color, have excellent grade point averages, good communication and writing skills and a commitment to community service.

The school districts offer program participants field experience. But scholars still have to work at it.

“This doesn’t guarantee employment,” Spesia said.

“It’s a commitment the districts are making to look at MERIT scholars. The students could serve somewhere else, but it starts with Joliet.”

Tuition-free Munguia is the second program scholar. Jose Ortiz gained the distinction last year and is now a sophomore.

“The scholarship really helps the stress,” said Ortiz, who wants to combine his love for math, arts and soccer into a teaching career. “I’m really grateful for the program. If it weren’t for the scholarship, I would have been going to a community college or another place and had to worry about tuition. I don’t have to worry about the money part now.”

Munguia, who is the first in her family to go to college, said the elimination of tuition worries meant her parents could also rest easy.

“It took a lot of stress off, not having to worry about

payments and stuff,” she said.

“It really helped my family because they didn’t have to worry about that.”

Mentorship A full year into the program, Ortiz said the support he received from the college helped him get through classes related to his major. But the biggest transition was dealing with issues many college students face.

“The biggest thing was, don’t procrastinate,” he said.

“In high school, there was homework due tomorrow.

But in here, it works more on a schedule and you have to learn good time management.”

Ortiz spent his first year at college becoming certified to teach math to bilingual students, which he said was an important need.

While Munguia grew up in Joliet, she mostly spoke Spanish when she started school.

“I’ve always wanted to stay close to my family in Joliet,” she said. “And it’s good knowing I’ll be helping out.”

“There’s such a need in the state, nation and district to add teachers of color,” Spesia said. “Especially in Joliet, the term ‘minority’ isn’t really appropriate when talking about diversity.”

Spesia hopes the scholarship can grow, going to multiple recipients annually in the future. But that depends on grant funding and program donations.

“I’d definitely recommend this scholarship to other [high school] students,” Munguia said. “It really is a great program.”

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The man who has been the face of the Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the past 18 years now will be the face on the Chamber as well.

The Chamber dedicated its offices at 63 N. Chicago St. as The Russ Slinkard Chamber of Commerce Building in a ceremony Tuesday attended by local officials, Chamber members and family.

Slinkard is the Chamber’s president and chief executive officer.

The dedication, which included the unveiling of a plaque on the front of the building, kicked off the Chamber’s “100 Hours for 100 Years” celebration, a series of events this week honoring the organization’s centennial.

“In 1999, Russ made the decision to rally the membership and buy the building,” said Jeff Thompson, Chamber board chairman. “Most Chambers rent space. Most just don’t have the resources.

What a great example he set to purchase the building, pay the bank on time and burn the mortgage [in 2012].”

many towns within the county have Chambers.

“But the granddaddy of them all is the Joliet Chamber of Commerce,” Walsh said.

The organization, which started as an offshoot of the Joliet Rotary Club in 1914, is

the fourth largest Chamber in the state, with about 1,200 members.

“Russ has been a tremendous advocate of the Joliet Chamber and Chambers throughout Illinois,” Walsh said.

Other officials attending

the ceremony included state Sens. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, and Pat McGuire, D-Joliet; state Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood; Joliet Mayor Tom Giarrante and a representative from the office of U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville. Slinkard also

received congratulations from Gov. Pat Quinn in the form of a proclamation.

Slinkard did not know the dedication was going to happen and was surprised by the ceremony.

“I had no idea at all,” Slinkard said.

Logistics Summit looks at transportation challenges

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – John Greuling asked the golden question during Tuesday’s Global Logistics Summit in Bolingbrook.

“One of the things we at the center are big supporters of is making sure there’s adequate investment in the infrastructure to provide transportation services. … What are some challenges you see?” said Greuling, president and CEO of the Will County Center for

Economic Development Ken Miller, vice president of operations with the Chicago-based trucking and transportation company J.B. Hunt Transport Services, had an answer.

“The infrastructure of our highway system … needs a lot of work, when you think about just the size of the highways, the traffic. It’s very hard for us to move freight [during certain periods of the day],” Miller said.

The summit, along with the panel discussion on transpor-

tation challenges, included a number of presentations from experts on transportation, employment opportunities for people with disabilities and future eCommerce opportunities.

Miller said it’s going to take a lot of money to bring Illinois roads up to par. And, to answer Greuling’s next question about how road improvements should be funded, Miller said the burden should not land solely on trucking companies.

“What always comes back to the trucker is … ‘Well, let’s raise the fuel tax,’ ” Miller said.

“The trucking companies don’t want to fund it all. We’ll pay our fair share, but we have to find a way so that everyone that’s using the supply chain pays their fair share.”

Transportation, along with a lack of funding, remains one of the area’s biggest challenges as Will County grows into its role as a major player in the national and global marketplace.

The growing traffic congestion, in part, is what’s pushing Greuling to form a countywide freight council.

president for the south and west regions of Duke Realty, said when searching for headquarters, eCommerce companies are looking for “good transportation, ready labor, cheap land and not a lot of red tape.”

But they also need the space to store inventory.

“When there’s population increases and the economy gets good and people are buying things in store and online, those inventories rise. And when those inventories rise, you got to have those warehouses to house them,” Turner said.

Lockport plant will close Silver Cross Hospital receives $1.8M gift and lay off 82 workers THE HERALD–NEWS

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – A Lockport factory plans to lay off about 82 people before closing its doors this fall.

Xten Lockport, a subsidiary of Wisconsin-based Xten Industries LLC, issued a notice to the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity on Sept. 2 that it intends to close its facility at 15160 S. New Ave. in Lockport, department spokesman Dave Roeder, said.

The company, formerly known as Paramount Plastics LLC, will lay off about 82 people on Oct. 29 and the process is expected to finish by

Nov. 11. Many of the people being laid off are operators with the company, Roeder said.

Xten Industries LLC produces injection molded components and fully fabricated products, according to its website. In 2012, Xten Industries acquired Paramount Plastics LLC, a news release stated.

According to a 2013 news release, Xten was experiencing the “largest and fastest expansion in its 70-year history,” with sales growing from $4.4 million in 2002 to $19 million in 2011. The acquisition of Paramount Plastics added another $15 million in revenue.

Roeder said the Lockport location had no union, according to the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification, or WARN notice, sent to the department. The notice also did not indicate if anyone was being transferred to another location, he said.

Under current labor laws, employers are required to issue a WARN notice 60 days in advance of closings and layoffs.

“What this notice does here is it swings us into action to go in there with other agencies to provide people job counseling and job referrals and help apply for unemployment,” Roeder said.

NEW LENOX – Silver Cross Hospital announced Tuesday that it has received a $1.8 million gift from the estate of Jennie Mariner, a former owner of Rainbo Bakery in Joliet.

Hospital officials said in a news release that the gift was unforeseen but that Mariner was a regular Jennie donor who also was involved Mariner in several fundraising efforts at Silver Cross over the years. She also was a Silver Cross trustee and volunteer.

Mariner died in June at the age of 91 in Green Valley, Arizona.

The donation will be used to help pay for the new hospital, which opened in 2012 when Silver Cross moved from its Joliet campus, hospital offi-

cials said.

“Although I never had the opportunity to meet Jennie, she was an extraordinary lady,” Larry Johnson, vice president of the Silver Cross Foundation, said in the news release. “Like clockwork, she would make an annual gift to Silver Cross. I always called to thank her. She would tell me about the weather in Arizona, and I would give her an update on the new hospital construction or operations.”

Mariner was born in Joliet in 1923. She was a graduate of Iowa State University. She married George Mariner in 1961. The couple owned and operated Rainbo Bakery.

Mariner was involved in several fundraising efforts for expansion and renovation projects at Silver Cross, hospital officials said. She also was a president of Women of Rotary. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Joliet, where she served as a deaconess and elder.

A now 16-year-old girl testified Tuesday that she also got messages from Maya, 24, on social media that led to her spending time at his apartment earlier this year.

Maya is accused of ambushing Valle and her mother, Alicia Guerrero, on Feb. 13 outside their Erick M. home in RomeoMaya ville. Valle was killed while Guerrero was shot in the neck and survived.

Maya is charged with murder and attempted murder. His trial started last week at the

Will County Courthouse.

Prosecutors said Maya got to know Valle through Facebook in 2012, and they began a relationship that soured after he threatened to harm her and her family.

The 16-year-old girl who testified Tuesday said “Carlos” messaged her in December 2013, which is when he threatened Valle, according to an order of protection. The teen identified Maya in court as the man she met about a month later after exchanging messages online with “Carlos.”

The girl, who is not being named because she is underage, testified she went to Maya’s apartment in Cicero to meet him for the first time before her mom picked her up from school. Two weeks later, she skipped school for another rendezvous, she told Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Jim Long.

“He had a tattoo on his forearm [that said] ‘Briana.’ ...

He didn’t want to talk about it when [I asked],” she testified.

The witness confirmed exchanging Facebook messages that she and “Carlos” were in love and planned to stay together.

On Feb. 11, the girl arranged to visit Maya’s apartment again, but waited for about an hour until he arrived.

Cab driver Stephen Sanders testified Monday he’d dropped Maya off earlier that morning on the street near Valle’s house.

“He said he’d gone to pick up some money,” she testified.

The girl did not see Maya again until Tuesday. He was found by police in Romeoville after the shooting and arrested. Police said he identified himself as “Carlos.”

were that day later tested for gunshot residue by Pam Wong, a state police crime lab scientist who also testified Tuesday.

Wong testified there was residue on the right cuff of the jacket and the right leg of the pants, but none on the sweatshirt Maya wore.

A test done on Maya’s hands did not show he fired a gun on the day of the slaying.

But gunshot residue only remains on skin for about six hours before movement or other contact removes what could be found, Wong said.

“Such as washing your hands or rubbing them in snow,” Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Chris Koch asked. Wong acknowledged that is possible.

There was snow on the ground on Feb. 13, the day of the shooting.

Defense attorney George Lenard asked Wong about the procedures she used in lab testing to avoid contamination.

The scientist acknowledged she could not rule out the possibility of residue transferring to the clothes in the police station booking area.

8 Teenage girl testifies about relationship with Maya

Morris wants to keep liquor off the streets and sidewalks MORRIS – During the Grundy County Corn Festival, liquor flows from local bars, and inevitably onto city streets, where police say dense crowds of drinkers gather, often blocking pedestrian traffic.

This year, Morris is making one significant change to keep those crowds contained, police Chief Brent Dite said Tuesday.

No open alcohol will be permitted in public.

Any person caught drinking on city streets or sidewalks will receive a citation carrying a $50 fine.

All liquor establishments will be responsible for keeping alcohol within their doors.

If a customer is caught leaving a bar with liquor, the establishment will be warned the first time and written up if it occurs twice, Dite said.

The new rule will be enforced every day of the festival, without exception. That includes during live music concerts and other entertainment events held on public streets.

“It would be two in the afternoon, hardly anyone would be inside the bar, and a group would still be standing outside drinking.”

Bolingbrook man faces charges after allegedly battering pregnant woman SHAW MEDIA news@theherald-news.com BOLINGBROOK – A 23-year-old Bolingbrook man is facing charges after authorities say he battered a pregnant woman Sunday afternoon.

Jonathan D. Yates, of 305 Woodcreek Drive, was charged with aggravated domestic battery, resisting arrest, unlawful possession/ use of a weapon, possession of drug equipment and possession of cannabis of less than 30 grams.

The incident started about

1:50 p.m. Sunday in a parking lot in the 300 block of Woodcreek Drive.

Officers who arrived at the scene were told that a male – later identified as Yates – had fled the area on foot after a victim was battered in the parking lot, according to Bolingbrook police.

Officers then located and stopped the victim in a vehicle. They went to an apartment looking for Yates. Police said they found Yates’ identification and a bond sheet for an unlawful use of a weapon charge from a separate case,

along with cannabis and a handgun.

Officers in the area saw Yates running on Woodcreek Drive and ran after him, eventually arresting him in the 300 block of Wildflower, police said.

Yates also had active warrants out for his arrest out of Westmont and Clarendon Hills.

He was processed and transported to the Will County Adult Detention Facility.

The victim was taken to a local hospital for treatment, police said.

Organ and tissue donation is also something that Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center, in Joliet, takes very seriously.

“From my perspective it’s important, because life goes on to another individual who might not have had it without that life-saving organ,” said Leslie Livett, RN, trauma nurse coordinator at Presence St. Joseph.

According to the United States Department of Health and Human Services someone is added to the organ donation waiting list every 10 minutes, and although 28,953 people received transplants in 2013, every day 18 people die waiting for a transplant.

Organ and tissue donation are generally made by persons suffering a traumatic injury.

“It’s our responsibility to follow through and support the patient to the end, and a lot of times, through that end process, it is their choice to be organ donors,” said Leslie Bar-

na, RN stroke coordinator at Presence St. Joseph. “Trauma patients are a big part of our population, so it’s important for us to have those programs in a hospital with a large neurosciences program and that is a level 2 trauma center.” Because organ donation is a sensitive situation, Presence St. Joseph partners with the national non-profit organization Gift of Hope, which contacts the donor family, Livett said.

The medical center’s committee Team Hope works closely with its pastoral care department to make sure families are comfortable while they’re waiting for their loved ones to have their organs placed. It also conducts a calendar of initiatives throughout the year, including a ceremony to honor donor families.

“We’ve also done a lot of education with our nursing staff and our physician staff,” Barna said.

4 injured after truck strikes school bus

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com PEOTONE TOWNSHIP – Four people were injured Tuesday when a small school bus rolled over after being struck by a pickup truck.

The school bus had one passenger, a boy whose injuries were described as “minor scrapes.”

Will County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said the collision occurred at 6:35 a.m. at 88th Avenue and Joliet Road.

The driver of the Ford pickup, a 43-year-old Kankakee man, told deputies his brakes failed as he approached the stop sign, Hoffmeyer said.

The pickup struck the short school bus and knocked it into a ditch, where it rolled over one time and came to rest upright, she said.

The Peotone Community District 207 bus was driven by a 44-year-old woman. The one passenger on the bus was a 13-year-old boy.

“He was well-secured in the bus and had minor scrapes,” Hoffmeyer said.

The bus driver, the pickup driver and a 17-year-old boy riding in the pickup also suffered injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

All four were taken to Riverside Hospital in Kankakee.

Hoffmeyer said no charges have been filed and the crash remains under investigation.

Petrick said the numbers show people still are drawn to the area, though the median sales value of homes is increasing. In 2008, the median sales value for a Channahon home was $230,500. In 2011 and 2012, it dropped to $74,550 and $86,750, respectively. So far this year, it is $189,000.

The news on distressed properties also is better, he added. In 2010, there were 102 distressed properties in Channahon. Currently, there are 18.

Petrick said distressed properties are those in foreclosure or advertised as for sale by the mortgagee.

Petrick said housing trends in towns north of Channahon usually move southward, and he’s seeing a rebound in the housing market in those municipalities.

But the size of desirable homes will most likely be smaller. The millennial generation is expected to want smaller homes, Petrick said.

Construction to begin on downtown development THE HERALD–NEWS FRANKFORT – Construction is set to begin this fall on a two-story retail and office building in downtown Frankfort.

The Sangmeister office building will be razed to build the 13,166-square-foot building at 28 Kansas St., according to a news release from the village.

About 6,000 square feet will be devoted to retail and restaurants on the first floor. The same amount of space will be

used for offices on the second floor.

Village Board members approved details for the downtown building at a meeting Monday.

Village officials said in a news release the project will benefit the downtown area by bringing in quality shopping, dining and office activity.

The Francesca’s Restaurant Group, which is developing the building’s restaurant space, plans a Mexican-themed restaurant. The expected com-

pletion is spring 2015, with restaurant and retail shops opening in the summer.

Frankfort’s 1890s Theme Committee, plan commission and board approved project plans unanimously last spring.

The village’s economic development committee recommended approval of an economic incentive program, with incentives capped at $220,000.

Richard Wright of Rowhouse Ltd, will construct the building and the Linden Group will serve as its architect.

CHANNAHON – Channahon’s housing market is doing a tad better this year than last, growing from the smidgen of improvement between last year and the year before.

“Things are improving,” Channahon Development Director Mike Petrick said after Monday’s Village Board meeting.

Petrick was careful to say the optimism is relative.

Lately, he compares housing numbers from 2008 to today.

The days before the economic downturn, when the village would see 300 housing permits a year, are gone.

So far this year, the village has issued eight building permits, with three pending. In all of 2013, Petrick said, nine permits were issued. Projections are for 25 to 30 new unit starts in each of the next two years, he said, with numbers propped up by multifamily construction.

Existing home sales are looking better, as well, he said.

City Council will discuss annexation

LOCKPORT – The Lockport City Council on Wednesday will discuss annexation of a property that has raised concerns among nearby residents.

Council members will review at their committee of the whole meeting an agreement from Lockport Investments LLC to annex or expand city limits to property located west of Interstate 355 and north of 151st street.

The company also proposed to the city to rezone parts of the roughly 80-acre property to residential, office and light industrial uses.

Many residents from subdivisions near the property came to a Sept. 4 City Council meeting to express concerns over the potential build up of traffic and noise near their homes should the area be developed.

City officials stressed to them the proposal was only to annex and rezone the property and there were no plans for immediate development.

Michael Gilreath, president of the Creekside Estates South Community Association, said the city did alleviate his concerns by explaining

In light of the residents’ concern, city officials adjusted the annexation agreement to ensure there would be no street connection between

any future residential, light industrial and existing office parts of the property, City Attorney Ron Caneva said.

“The developer has agreed to not have that happen,” he said.

Another part of the agreement that was adjusted was ensuring no existing trees would be removed until a tree survey and planned unit development review had been completed, Caneva said.

Mayor Steven Streit said annexation would make it easier for the city to regulate any development that would happen.

“The good thing about it is if there is a contiguous parcel and it’s all in the city, then as a city we have the opportunity to put any restrictions or guidelines that we deem would be best for the residents or growth [of the area],” he said.

Caneva said the property is planned for housing, office spaces and industrial development, which is not always “big smoke stacks.”

Gilreath said his stance on the plans is to let the city annex and rezone the property, but he wants the public to be involved in the process.

Gilreath said he thinks the Creekside Estates South Community Association will take a passive role but continue to monitor what’s happening.

“It’s quite possible all of this is occurring and no development comes in five to 10 years,” he said.

Peck settles lawsuit with Plainfield Democratic leader

Plainfield Trustee Garrett Peck filed a defamation suit against Plainfield Township Democratic Organization Chairman Michael Keniley last October.

According to a statement issued by Peck, “Garrett Peck

filed suit against Mike Keniley for posting allegedly damaging statements in the Plainfield Patch. The matter settled out of court and neither party claims or admits fault.”

An agreed dismissal order through the Will County Circuit Court states: “This cause is hereby dismissed with prejudice and without costs to Michael T. Keniley.”

Similar, disturbing incidents have happened to two of my clients in the past few weeks.

One became a victim of some con artists; the other almost became a victim. What happened in both episodes was this: My clients had younger relatives pass away. The younger persons’ obituaries read something like this: “Mary Ann Smith [names changed], 55, late of Joliet died unexpectedly last week at her home. Surviving are her loving husband, Walter; her children, Ann Marie and Mark Thomas Smith, of Joliet; mother-in-law Margaret (late Martin) Smith of Crest Hill; her sister...”

What does this obituary notice tell us besides the fact that Mary Ann Smith died unexpectedly? It tells us that 55-year old Mary Ann Smith’s mother-in-law is a widow, her father-in-law, Martin, is deceased; Margaret is probably in her late 70’s or early 80’s; she probably lives alone; and if Margaret’s name is not listed in the phone book, her telephone is probably still listed under her late husband’s, Martin’s, name.

For some con artists this is an open invitation to do their dirty work. Both of my clients were called at home within two weeks of the obituary notice appearing in the newspaper. They were told their attorney wanted them to get a new will and a trust.

The con artists kept calling and calling and calling my clients until both of my clients relented and set up an appointment to meet the con artist in my clients’ homes between 7:30 p.m. and 9:00 p.m.

A middle aged man and woman came into the home of my first client. While the woman engaged my client in pleasant conversation, the man asked to use the bathroom and apparently “cased” the house. He also apparently took some very valuable jewelry from my client’s upstairs bedroom. My client’s children

called me several days later to ask if I had sent someone to their mother’s home. They said their mother was told they were from her lawyer’s office and they were at her home to get information for a new will and trust.

I called my client to find out what happened. She told me about the repeated calls; the evening appointment at her home and her missing jewelry.

I told her that at no time would anyone at our office go to her home unless she had first called me and had scheduled an evening “house call” for me to go to her home. I suggested to her that she call her children and tell them no one from our office was at her home and that she file a police report.

Not more than two weeks later my other client called. She told me of her son-in-law’s death; of repeated calls to her home; and that the caller said he was from her lawyer’s office. She told me that she had set up an appointment with the caller for the next evening at 8:00 p.m. The caller left no return phone number. With her permission, I called my client’s son and her town’s police department to make sure someone was with my client when the con-artists showed up for “the appointment”.

My second client thought the caller’s proposal sound “fishy”.

She had foresight to call my office to find out if someone from my law firm had called her.

Luckily, no one showed up for “the appointment”.

I doubt the con-artists wanted to keep “the appointment” when they saw the police car parked in front of my client’s home.

Beware! Beware! Beware!

If someone keeps calling you and asking you to do something that seems “fishy”; it probably is.

Q.What are the time limits for bringing a workers’ compensation case?

There are two legal time limits you have to worry about, as well as one practical time limit. The first legal requirement is that notice must be given to the employer within 45 days from the date of the accident. The best bet is to fill out an accident report on the date the accident happens. Anything other than that, especially with an un-witnessed accident, gives the employer the opportunity to claim that the accident could have happened somewhere else. The formal requirement is within 45 days, and should include both that an accident happened and that you were injured.

An oral notice is legally sufficient, but not preferred. If it’s the type of situation where you doubt a claim will be made, at least have the foreman or supervisor note the accident in their book. As an example, in herniated disc cases the person may feel a mild back pain on the day of the accident, and wake up the following morning, or even a day after that, in severe pain. The case would be better if the employer was notified at that the time of the mild back pain on the day of the accident.

The second requirement is a statute of limitations, which means that a claim must be filed with the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission. Merely dealing with the insurance company, or having the insurance company open up their own claim file, is not the same thing. The statute of limitations is subject to change by the Legislature, but currently it is three years from the date of the accident, but can be extended to two years from the last payment of compensation or medical bills, provided there is no two year gap in-between. The best bet is always filing the claim through a lawyer within three years.

Finally, as a practical time limit, medical care should be sought immediately or at least within the first 24, 48 or 72 hours. A good history of the work accident should be given to the doctor, and all affected body parts should be listed and examined. Delays or gaps in treatment, even if a doctor is seen initially, help the insurance company claim that something could have happened in-between, or that the injury was never serious to begin with. adno=0280636

Q. How long should I wait to file my case for the injury I received?

A. The phrase “the sooner, the better” is often the best answer. However, by statute, you generally have two (2) years from the date of injury to file your complaint or lose your cause of action forever. There are several exceptions (such as one (1) year if the defendant is a governmental entity ) so it is important to consult an attorney as to the specific Statute of Limitations applicable in your case.

The problem may arise when you think you are dealing with a friendly and sympathetic insurance adjuster. They mention your statute of limitations early on, but then move onto other matters. For months they will call you to check up on you. They always return your calls. They really seem to care. Or do they?

Often we have people call us weeks before their statute is to run. The adjuster hasn’t called and won’t return the messages. Now they want help from the lawyer. Most attorneys are very hesitant to take on a

new case within a few weeks of statute running out.

There is little time to conduct limited investigation.

There is the potential to fail to locate all the proper parties because there is simply no time to adequately track every detail down. The insurance adjuster knows this and has “played” you. Settle with the company for a lesser amount or take your chances on finding a lawyer so close to statute.

Worse, we have received calls from victims who tried to call back the adjuster a day or two before statute to “firm up the final offer” only to have no one call back and the statute ran. Now, unless something was in writing, there is no proof that an offer was made in the first place, much less that there had been an acceptance of the offer before time ran out.

So, since there are many potential statutes that might be applicable to your particular case, and since the earlier an attorney is involved, the more time he/she has to investigate and prepare your case, it really is the best option to contact an attorney earlier rather than later. adno=0280638

was a longtime resident of Lockport before moving to Shorewood five years ago. Member of Lockport American Legion John Olson Post #18 Ladies Auxiliary.

She was an avid card player, Bingo and Pokeno player, but most of all she cherished spending time with her family.

Preceded in death by her husband, Stephen Dudzik (1968); her parents, John and Katie (Barna) Filip; brothers, John and Joe; and a sister, Helen.

Survived by her two devoted children, Steve (Debbie) Dudzik of Flora, IL and Darlene (John) Homerding of Shorewood; three cherished grandchildren, Rachel Dudzik, Mark (Joyce) Homerding and Mariann (Stacy) Homerding; six adored great grandchildren, Samantha, Rian, Cade, Reese, Kyah and Ethan Homerding; four sisters, Anne, Rose, Katie and Dorothy; and special niece, Karen (Tom) Cibulskis. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

KENNETH F. GAWRON Born: Nov. 30, 1939; in Chicago, IL Died: Sept. 12, 2014; in Plainfield, IL Kenneth Franklin Gawron, age 74, of Plainfield, died September 12, 2014, at home in the comfort of his family.

Born November 30, 1939, in Chicago, IL, son of Michael and Eleanor Gawron.

He married Joanne (nee Janiszewski) on February 2, 1963 at St. Joseph Church in Round Lake, IL. His wife, Joanne, along with family, were by his side at the time of his passing.

He was honorably discharged from the Army in 1963. He retired from Crane Packing Co. after 42 years of service. His door was always open to those in need. He volunteered with food pantries, women’s shelters and various social groups. He and Joanne were foster parents through Catholic Charities.

He also pursued various leisure activities throughout his life including golfing with fellow parishioners from Holy Family, bowling on a league and even camping with his sons when they were Boy Scouts.

In addition to his wife, Joanne; he is survived by two sons, Stephen (Peggy) and Gregory (Leslie) Gawron, all of Plainfield; six grandchildren, Jacob Gawron of Plainfield, Ian Gawron of Iowa City, IA, Sophie Gawron of Burlington, IA, Alexa McNish of Johnsburg, IL and Anna and Ava Gawron, both of Plainfield; one brother, Bill (Bernadine) Gawron of Wildwood, IL; two sisters, Karen (Charles) May of Peoria and Diane (James, II) Harper of McHenry, IL; one sister-in-law, Judy (Dr. Leo) Wrona of Shorewood, IL; one brother-in-law, John (Margaret)

Janiszewski of Wauconda, IL; 19 nieces and nephews; and 35 grandnieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Eleanor; inlaws, Sigmund and Mae Janiszewski; and one nephew, Ryan May. Mr. Gawron will be deeply missed by everyone who’s life he touched, and he will live forever in our hearts and memories.

Rauner questions medical marijuana program secrecy

CHICAGO – Republican governor candidate Bruce Rauner said Tuesday he wouldn’t have signed legislation creating Illinois’ medical marijuana pilot program because it includes a secret process for deciding who may grow and sell the drug.

Rauner said it’s “another hallmark” of a culture of corruption under Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn. He said the public should know who’s applying for a limited number of state permits, and whether the permits are given to “insiders” with political clout.

Quinn Spokesman Grant Klinzman said the law keeps applicants’ identity confidential so the state officials who award the permits won’t be influenced by political connections.

“The purpose of keeping information confidential, as approved by legislators of both parties, was to ensure the highest standard of integrity of the selection process,” Klinzman said.

New subpoena for anti-violence program issued

CHICAGO – Federal authorities in Chicago issued a new subpoena over records involving Gov. Pat Quinn’s troubled anti-violence program, state officials confirmed Tuesday.

The 2010 Neighborhood Recovery Initiative, the subject of a scathing state auditor general’s report for mismanagement and misspending, already has been under scrutiny by federal prosecutors in Springfield, the Cook County state’s attorney and a legislative commission.

Lawmaker panel delays decision on fracking rules

CHICAGO – A legislative panel said Tuesday it wants more

time to decide whether rules written by the Department of Natural Resources to govern hydraulic fracturing in Illinois can take effect.

The legislature’s Joint Committee on Administrative Rules received proposed rules for high-volume oil and gas extraction from the DNR, after the agency reworded some rules based on more than 30,000 comments on it original draft. But industry and environmental groups said they would ask JCAR to seek dozens of changes.

An industry coalition has outlined more than 65 areas of concern, including rules that it believes violate the legislative compromise. Among their objections is language allowing the DNR to consider overall health and environmental impacts of multiple wells when evaluating a

permit for a single well.

Fire officials: One injured in Elgin house explosion

in intensive care after an explosion blew out the walls and windows of his house, fire officials said.

Firefighters responded to the reported explosion around 10 p.m. Monday, the Daily Herald reported.

The resident left the house himself and was on the front yard when firefighters arrived, the fire department said. He was taken to a local hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit, the department said.

Firefighters had the fire under control within 10 minutes, officials said.

Damage was estimated at about $150,000. The front and east walls of the single-story home were destroyed, and windows were shattered.

Officials are investigating what caused the explosion.

URBANA – University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign Chancellor Phyllis Wise told a committee of faculty leaders she regretted the uproar caused by the decision not hire a professor whose Twitter messages were considered by some to be anti-Semitic.

Wise told the campus Senate Executive Committee on Monday the university’s board of trustees will be asked to consider approving the hiring of future tenured faculty much earlier in the process.

WASHINGTON – The Social Security Administration has resumed mailing statements to workers letting them know the estimated benefits they will get when they retire, the agency announced Tuesday.

Social Security began phasing out mailed statements to most workers in 2011 to save an estimated $70 million a year.

Instead, it directed workers to track their future benefits online using a secure website.

But Congress passed a bill last year requiring Social Security to resume mailing the statements.

The agency said Tuesday many workers now will start receiving paper statements in the mail every five years, starting a few months before their 25th birthday. Once workers reach 60, they will get them every year.

“At the peak, essentially the entire town was evacuated,” state fire spokesman Robert Foxworthy said.

Disastrous as it was for the community of 3,000 people, daybreak brought gratitude and relief there were no reports of death or even serious injuries.

Top general: U.S. ground troops are possible in Iraq

By DAVID ESPO and DONNA CASSATA The Associated Press WASHINGTON – American ground troops may be needed to battle Islamic State forces in the Middle East if President Barack Obama’s current strategy fails, the nation’s top military officer said Tuesday as Congress plunged into an election-year debate of Obama’s plan to expand airstrikes and train Syrian rebels.

A White House spokesman said quickly the president “will not” send ground forces into combat. But Gen. Martin Dempsey said Obama had personally told him to come back on a “case by case basis” if the military situation changed.

“To be clear, if we reach the point where I believe our advisers should accompany Iraqi troops on attacks against specific ISIL targets, I will recommend that to the president,” Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in testimony to

the Senate Armed Services Committee. He referred to the militants by an alternative name.

Pressed later by Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., the panel’s chairman, the four-star general said if Obama’s current approach isn’t enough to prevail, he might “go back to the president and make a recommendation that may include the use of ground forces.”

Dempsey’s testimony underscored the dilemma confronting many lawmakers as the House moves through its own debate on authorizing the Pentagon to implement the policy Obama announced last week. In Iraq, the U.S. continued Tuesday its expanded military campaign, carrying out two airstrikes northwest of Irbil and three southwest of Baghdad.

Democrats in Washington spoke of a fear that the United State might inevitably become dragged into yet another ground war on the heels of Afghanistan and Iraq.

“We must ... ask ourselves if

we can truly ‘vet’ these rebel groups beyond their known affiliations, and ensure we are not arming the next extremist threat to the region and the world,” said Rep. Pete Visclosky, D-Ind. The same question came up at the Senate hearing, and Hagel said the U.S. will monitor closely to ensure that weapons don’t fall into the wrong hands. “We have come a long way” in our ability to vet the moderate opposition, and the U.S. has learned a lot as it has funneled non-lethal aid to the rebels, Dempsey said.

House Republicans said they worried that Obama was responding tepidly to the current threat by terrorists who have overrun large sections of Iraq and Syria and beheaded two American journalists.

“If it’s important enough to fight, it’s important enough to win,” said Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., one of the first lawmakers to address the subject in several hours of scheduled debate.

KABUL, Afghanistan – A Taliban attacker detonated his car bomb next to an international military convoy on Tuesday, killing three members of the NATO-led force and wounding nearly 20 troops and civilians, officials said.

Security forces in full battle gear administered CPR to wounded comrades shortly after the early morning blast, which rattled nearby neighborhoods and sent a plume of smoke high into the sky. The attack happened only a couple hundred yards from the U.S. Embassy, on a main Kabul road that leads to the airport.

The statement from the military coalition known as ISAF said five troops were wounded in addition to the three killed, but did not disclose their nationalities. The Polish Defense Ministry said one Polish soldier, Sgt. Rafal Celebudzki, was killed in the blast, and two other Poles were wounded.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which happened next to an ISAF base that houses many Americans.

The three military deaths – and a fourth in the country’s east – brought the total number of international troops killed in Afghanistan this year to 59, at least 42 of whom were American.

The U.S. and NATO military commitment to Afghanistan is winding down, with all combat troops scheduled to be out of the country by the end of the year. But violence remains. Afghan Interior Minister Omar Dawoodzai said Tuesday more than 1,500 Afghan police have been killed in violence in the past six months. Nearly 1,000 Afghan civilians also have been killed, he said.

The car bomb attack turned several vehicles into twisted metal, and bloodied and dazed Afghan passers-by. Some people scooped up the wounded into their arms and carried them to medical workers.

Ebola response: Enough and in time?

By LAURAN NEERGAARD and JIM KUHNHENN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama declared Tuesday that the Ebola epidemic in West Africa could threaten security around the world, and he ordered 3,000 U.S. military personnel to the region in emergency aid muscle for a crisis spiraling out of control.

The question was whether the aid would be enough and was coming in time. An ominous World Health Organization forecast said that with so many people now spreading the virus, the number of Ebola cases could start doubling every three weeks.

“If the outbreak is not

stopped now, we could be looking at hundreds of thousands of people affected, with profound economic, political and security implications for all of us,” Obama said Tuesday after briefings in Atlanta at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Emory University.

Obama called on other countries to join in quickly supplying more health workers, equipment and money.

“It’s a potential threat to global security if these countries break down,” Obama said, speaking of the hardest-hit nations of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. At least 2,400 people have died, with Liberia bearing the brunt. Nearly 5,000 people have fallen ill in those coun-

tries and Nigeria and Senegal since the disease was first recognized in March. WHO said it anticipates the figure could rise to more than 20,000, and the disease could end up costing nearly $1 billion to contain.

Obama described the task ahead as “daunting” but said there was hope in the fact “the world knows how to fight this disease.”

His expression grim, he described the “gut-wrenching” scene of a family in Liberia. The father had died, the mother was cradling a sick 5-year old, her 10-year-old was dying, too, and the family had reached a treatment center but couldn’t get in.

“These men and women and children are just sitting,

waiting to die, right now,” Obama said. “And it doesn’t have to be this way.”

The U.S. is promising to deliver 17 hundred-bed treatment centers to Liberia, where contagious patients often sit in the streets, turned away from packed Ebola units. The Pentagon expects to have the first treatment units open within a few weeks, part of the heightened U.S. response that also includes training more local health care workers.

“This massive ramp-up of support from the United States is precisely the kind of transformational change we need to get a grip on the outbreak and begin to turn it around,” said WHO Director-General Margaret Chan.

Ukraine ratifies landmark deal with Europe

The actions by lawmakers began to flesh out the emerg-

ing picture of a new Ukraine, where a determined pivot toward Europe has come at great cost: concessions to Russia and a war with rebels that killed more than 3,000 people and pushed the West’s relations with Moscow to Cold War-era lows.

The measure deepening the economic and political ties with Europe was the issue that sparked the crisis last fall, when then-Presi-

dent Viktor Yanukovych’s decision to shelve the deal in favor of closer ties with Russia sparked protests by hundreds of thousands. Those demonstrations eventually drove him from power in February and led to the annexation of Crimea by Moscow and the rebellion in the east, where a shaky ceasefire began Sept. 5.

Ukraine, requires Ukrainian goods to meet European regulatory standards and forces the Kiev government to undertake major political and economic reforms.

Cheers to Joliet Chamber for 100 years of service The Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. And that is no small feat.

When the Chamber began in 1914 as an offshoot of the Joliet Rotary Club, it was on a mission not only to bring more commerce to Joliet but also to create overall progress.

The Chamber advocated strongly for women business owners, paved roadways to larger cities, the Brandon Dam and railways. At the time, Joliet was a hub of endless possibilities, and the Chamber realized it.

It’s hard to imagine where Joliet would be today had it not been for that original group of innovators and their like-minded descendants of today.

Not unlike in 1914, today’s Chamber still works hard for the businesses and people of Joliet. When the recession hit in 2008, the Chamber did anything and everything it could to reach out and help their members.

Be it through an educational seminar, inviting members to the office for an entire afternoon of advice and strategy or going directly to lawmakers’ offices for answers, the Chamber does not give up on its members.

But an organization is only as strong as its leader. We see that strength in Chamber CEO Russ Slinkard. For nearly two decades, Slinkard has been the driving force behind this group of local business advocates.

There have been few ideas that Slinkard has turned down. When a local chef approached him about transforming downtown Joliet into New Orleans for a weekend, Slinkard didn’t hesitate. Thus was born one of Joliet’s most popular events.

When the Chamber had an opportunity to buy a new building and have it paid off in a little more than 10 years, Slinkard jumped on it.

And Slinkard also has created a family of sorts within the Chamber. Most staff members have been there for at least 15 years.

It’s difficult to imagine Joliet without the Chamber’s hard work over the past century.

Would we have the infrastructure, commerce and industry that we have today?

We congratulate the Chamber and all members, past and present, for their undying loyalty and faith in our city.

We are proud of everything you have accomplished.

Illinois economy struggles to recover SPRINGFIELD – For every new job created in Illinois since January 2010, two people have signed up for food stamps.

That’s just sad.

OK, it’s pathetic.

And this has happening during a period that has been labeled an “economic recovery.”

But the fact of the matter is Illinois has lagged far behind the rest of the country in recovering from the Great Recession.

The number of Illinois private-sector jobs has dropped by 5,900 since the first of the year.

Only Illinois and Alaska saw a drop in the number of non-governmental jobs.

In the small town where I live near Springfield, there is only one grocery store.

I see the furtive looks of folks

Nobody wants their neighbors to know.

We Illinoisans are a proud, hard-working people. We want jobs, not handouts.

And yet, for many folks, employment remains elusive.

I suspect in your community you see those same embarrassed looks in the checkout lines, hear friends or family talk about difficult job hunts, and know someone who just given up on Illinois and moved away.

Illinois’ recovery from the Great Recession has been the most sluggish of the 50 states.

You’ll hear state politicians proclaiming we are in “recovery” because the unemployment rate has dropped.

But the unemployment rate only tracks people who are looking for jobs.

Many folks just have given up looking for a job and gone on welfare.

Others have left the state looking for work elsewhere.

And still others have entered the “underground economy,” working for cash and not reporting their income to the government.

None of these are desirable outcomes for the state of Illinois.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

FROM BIG GOVERNMENT To the Editor: In the Sept. 4 edition of The Herald-News, a letter to the editor (“Time for change to save middle class”) appeared that was in response to my letter (“Partisan ideology distorts reality” in the Aug. 24 edition), which described the policy initiatives of the Texas Legislature. Said initiatives are antithetical to the interests of the middle class because they are put in place to benefit the upper end of the class pyramid.

The letter of Sept. 4 suggested that the primary problems that depress the American economy are big government, over-taxed corporations and excessive regulation.

First, the federal and state governments have been

downsized to the point that many basic services are not adequately funded, and our decaying infrastructure attests to this fact.

Second, corporate taxes have been declining for the last 30 years. According to Paul Krugman of The New York Times, about one-third of U.S. corporations pay no taxes; and because of subsidies and tax loopholes, the remainder pay an average of about 12 percent.

Last, the Sept. 4 letter stated that “overall regulations” should be cut.

Evidently, the collapse of the financial sector (2008), due to the elimination of the Glass-Steagall Act, did not register with the author of the letter.

To refresh his memory, financial institutions sanctioned

and developed toxic mortgages that were collateralized and put on the market as viable economic products. They were not, the market collapsed, and the government bailed out the banks while thousands of people lost their homes and received little or no compensation.

Economists Paul Krugman, Robert Reich and Joseph Stiglitz have all emphasized the necessity of more regulations on “the too big to fail” financial institutions and the multinational corporations.

They also decry the loss of union power as a countervailing force to corporate power.

Unions give the working class a voice in the distribution of the wealth that they help to create.

If only we were.

Other states such as Indiana are prospering.

At a time when Illinois has been raising taxes, the Hoosier State has been cutting them.

When Illinois has adopted more labor regulations, Indiana has reduced them.

Indiana’s economy has been prospering, and Illinois’ has been struggling.

Prosperity may not be around the corner, but it certainly is right next door – in Indiana.

North tops Central in noisy battle

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Noise filled the gym during the second set of Plainfield North’s Southwest Prairie volleyball match Tuesday.

Parents and the sophomore teams tried out-cheering each other and the girls on the court were not quiet, either. Plainfield Central fought hard after losing the first set 25-15 but lost to Plainfield North 25-22.

Central senior outside hitter Elizabeth Hyland started off the second set with a bang, or a kill through the seem of the block. Setter Ashley Shook then served an ace to increase the Wildcats’ lead.

During the next play, Hyland hit a hard shot that forced North to send over a free ball. The Wildcats overpassed the free ball to North’s middle, who gladly accepted the kill.

“Our first contact was all over the place today,” Central coach Erik Vogt said. “If we get more consistent on our side of the net with our passing and our digging, we will have a much better offense. Unfortunately, today we did not pass and dig very well.”

While Central had inconsistent first contact, North’s libero Maddie Zyburt passed a 2.70 in a 3.0 system and outside hitter Allie Lindroth passed a 2.30 for the night. Since North was in system for serve receive, the Tigers were able to spread their offense.

“We differentiated our offense and started playing very well together.” Lindroth said.

“We had a defense player back row that was flawless the entire game, which allowed our setter to put up the best ball that she could.”

Lindroth led the Tigers offensively with six kills and a .455 hitting percentage. With North leading 23-22, Lindroth hit a hard ball over the block to the left back corner, earning game point. Lindroth then swung hard-line for the game.

In the tight situations, Lindroth is most confident.

“It’s all confidence,” she said. “You have to demand the ball and be aggressive, which

Middle blocker Maddy Dieter made an impact with three kills on three attempts.

Dieter’s effectiveness made Central’s middles stay loyal to each player and not trapblock the pin hitters. If the defense forgets about Dieter

or ignores her because she is a freshman, she might bounce a middle quick off serve receive.

“I am nervous because I am playing with older girls, but I know I can play volleyball.”

Dieter said. “I work very hard, and I try my best. I go out there and I show them what I’ve got.”

When Central was able to pass in system, its offense was able to show what it had to

offer. Hyland had nine kills, Eulitz seven and Shook six.

During critical parts of the game, Shook was able to dump the ball in the middle of the court and the front row hit effectively.

“Our outsides put the ball down when they needed to,” Shook said. “And when I set our middles, they were getting them in the court and putting them on the ground.”

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After seeing her University of St. Francis women’s volleyball team get off to an 0-4 start this season, coach Cara Currier wondered about how long it might take for her young squad to put things together.

She didn’t have to wait very long as the team has responded to that start by winning nine of its next 11 matches, including their initial three in Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference South play.

The Fighting Saints, who only have two seniors and two juniors on their 16-player roster, captured their thirdstraight three-set CCAC South win on Tuesday with a 26-24, 25-21, 25-20 victory over Olivet Nazarene at Sullivan Center.

“One of my concerns coming in was how young we were going to be,” Currier said. “I knew that we were going to

have some productive sophomores, but still they’d only played on the court one year.

Our libero didn’t libero last year and our setter ran a 6-2 last year so she didn’t really run the whole show. So there were a lot of question marks that way.

“I really feel that they’re maturing as we go and they’re playing with so much heart and soul and doing such a good job. There’s been a number of places where we’ve been down and come back and prevailed in the set.

“I really like that about my team. We’re doing a good job of diversifying our offense and I feel like passing really well and our serve-receive has been really good lately and our defense has been scrappy.”

Plainfield South senior Jordan McNeill remembers her junior season well.

It was difficult to handle, but it was a campaign that would pay dividends in the end.

“Definitely a tough season, but in the back of our mind, we knew we were a young team with a lot of potential,” McNeill said. “It’s really showing this year. It was something we had to go through to realize how good your team can be.”

Putting last season’s twomatch win total further and further in the rearview mirror, Plainfield South continued its impressive start to the season Tuesday. Hosting Romeoville, the Cougars rolled to a 25-18, 25-18 victory in a Southwest Prairie match.

Alyssa O’Boyle (12 assists, 11 digs), Gabrielle Johnson (9 kills), McNeill (5 kills, 3 aces), Deyshia Lofton (4 kills), Courtney Luciano (10 digs) and Kaylie Milahoski (4 kills) all contributed for South (7-5, 2-1).

“Last year, we weren’t where we wanted to be,” O’Boyle said. “We did a lot of team bonding so we’ve grown together as a team and jelled a lot more than we did last year, and we trust each other.”

McNeill started the Cougars off on the right foot in the opener, her strong service game setting the tone. The senior outside had three aces as part of a 4-0 service run with Johnson providing a crosscourt kill to help put South up, 6-3.

Watching a defense struggle to handle her serves? Consider McNeill one happy camper.

“Serving is the one thing you have control over,” McNeill said. “It’s weird, but it’s always a good feeling when the other team is struggling [to handle serves].”

If there was a weakness on display, it was the Cougars’ ability to close the set when the chance presented itself.

By JACK CASSIDY The Associated Press CHICAGO – Jake Arrieta took a no-hit bid into the eighth inning before giving up Brandon Phillips’ one-out double, the only blemish for the Cubs pitcher in a 7-0 shutout of the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night.

Arrieta (9-5) struck out 13 and walked one in his first career complete game. He was five outs from the first no-hitter at Wrigley Field in 42 years when Phillips drove an 0-2 pitch to deep left-center, just beyond the desperate dive of center fielder Matt Szczur on the warning track.

It was the third time this

season Arrieta has flirted with a no-hitter.

He carried a perfect game into the seventh inning against Cincinnati on June 24 before Billy Hamilton singled.

In his next outing, the righthander held Boston hitless until Stephen Drew singled with two outs in the eighth.

The Cubs gave Arrieta plenty of run support against Reds ace Johnny Cueto (18-9).

Chris Coghlan capped a fiverun sixth inning with a threerun double, and Jorge Soler homered in the seventh.

8-0 victory for the Cubs over San Diego on Sept. 2, 1972.

Arrieta retired 21 of the first 22 batters he faced before allowing Phillips’ double. He

issued a leadoff walk in the fourth to Billy Hamilton, who was caught stealing on the next pitch.

Arrieta has allowed two or fewer runs in 18 of his 24 starts this season. Previously, the longest outing of his career was on May 2, 2012, when he pitched eight scoreless innings for Baltimore against the New York Yankees.

In his most recent start against the Reds, Arrieta gave up six runs.

Cueto yielded six runs and five hits in 5 2⁄ 3 innings. He struck out eight.

Soler hit a solo shot, his fifth homer of the season.

Through 14 major league games, he has 15 RBIs.

Bears earn poor grades in victory BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush The Bears’ 28-20 comefrom-behind victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night was a game for the ages, but that didn’t make the review of the game tape any more pleasant.

The reason the win was so impressive is the Bears were so bad for the first 40 minutes they appeared to have dug a hole impossible to climb out of.

Jay Cutler was one of the few bright spots. Before the Bears’ last possession of the first half, Cutler was 7 of 14 passing for 28 yards. From that point on he was 16 of 20 for 148 yards, four TDs, no interceptions and had three carries for 23 yards rushing, including a 25-yard scramble to ignite his ballclub.

Cutler gets an A for one of his best games with the Bears.

Matt Forte, on the other hand, gets a C. The only reason it’s not worse is he received no help from teammates. His 12 carries for 21

yards and five catches for 15 yards marked one of his weakest performances in years.

The offensive line was a big part of Forte’s problem, but it gets a C+ because the pass protection – with Roberto Garza and Matt Slauson on the bench and Brian de la Puente and Michael Ola in their spots – wasn’t bad.

Justin Smith worked Ola most of the night, but that’s not unusual with Smith. Jordan Mills had a particularly bad night, while Kyle Long played well again.

Receiver Brandon Marshall gets an A+ for his three TDs, even though he was less than 100 percent healthy and ineffective for stretches of the game. His first touchdown catch was as great a play as you’ll see all year.

Give tight end Martellus Bennett a B+ for being available for Cutler all night long while the rest of the receiving crew struggled, and for much improved run blocking over Week 1, even if the overall team run blocking was insufficient on the night.

The rest of the receiving corps earned a C to C-. Alshon Jeffery was clearly laboring

and his one big 29-yard catch to set up the Bears’ final score was an underthrow to the back shoulder that Chris Culliver just didn’t see. Santonio Holmes, Josh Bellamy and Dante Rosario did little to pick up their teammates.

The defensive line gets a C-. Other than Willie Young’s two sacks late in the game and Stephen Paea doing a decent job pressuring up the middle on pass plays, the whole group was mediocre to poor.

The 49ers rushed for 101 yards on 21 carries through three quarters because of large gaps inside and quarterback Colin Kaepernick breaking contain at least three times.

Jared Allen and Lamarr Houston were particularly ineffective, while Jeremiah Ratliff was again the only defensive lineman to earn a positive grade before leaving with a concussion.

For the linebackers, Lance Briggs was significantly better against the run than he was in Week 1, and Shea McClellin and Jon Bostic were both improved from Week 1, if still average, while D.J. Williams had a tough night. As a group,

the linebackers were a B-.

I’ve given the secondary a B+. Charles Tillman was playing well before his a triceps injury, and Chris Conte made a brilliant play on his interception before leaving with a shoulder injury.

Kyle Fuller was the second-biggest reason the Bears won the game after Marshall, and the rest of the DBs were at least close to average, holding the Niners to 186 yards passing over the first 48 minutes before their last desperation drive in the fourth quarter.

Special teams are a problem, and the coaching was spotty throughout, as clock management and play calling were curious at times.

The bottom line is if the Bears play just 18 to 20 minutes in each of the rest of their games, they’ll be a lessthan-.500 football team. But for this game, give the team and the coaches an A+ for somehow stealing a victory from well past the jaws and deep in the belly of defeat.

Defense shows it’s taking a step forward

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST — Before their injury-fueled tailspin began last season, the Bears’ run defense held its first three 2013 opponents – Cincinnati, Minnesota and Pittsburgh – less than 4.0 yards a carry.

After a discouraging preseason and Week 1 dud against Buffalo, the strong start in 2013 seemed like a distant memory.

So when asked the last time he felt as content about a defensive performance as the Bears’ four-takeaway outing Sunday night in San Francisco, coach Marc Trestman needed a minute before recalling his club’s strong 2013 start.

“I thought we played very good defense the first three games last year,” he said. “I think we’re working toward

that. We got a lot of new guys playing. But I think we saw some progress this week against what we all agree is a very good running football team.”

San Francisco totaled 129 yards at 4.9 a clip, but a strong Bears pass rush repeatedly forced mobile quarterback Colin Kaepernick from the pocket, inflating those numbers. The Bears limited Frank Gore, Carlos Hyde and a zone read offense that’s given them fits to 63 yards on 17 carries. Trestman noted improved tackling and assignment-sound football as helping spearhead the improvement.

“I thought the tackling was excellent in this game overall … very good at the point, the fits were good, guys knew who had the back, who had the corner, that showed up on the

tape,” he said.

With a Monday night battle looming against the Jets, another club featuring a diverse run game, zone read concepts and a mobile quarterback, Trestman called the Bears’ improvement “a good sign.” Further adjustments are needed in what is an “ongoing chess match between offense and defense” regarding the zone read.

Sugar-free run game assessment: Trestman and guard Kyle Long didn’t sugarcoat their disappointment in a ground game that mustered only 46 yards against a tough Niners defense. Long called the results “embarrassing.” Trestman intends to throw away a “very poor performance,” alluding to their success against Buffalo as something the Bears will look to build on against the Jets’ No. 1 overall run defense.

Perseverance pays: The adversity the Bears conquered in overcoming injuries to three defensive starters and a 17-point halftime deficit was just one game, but it “does give some insight into the kind of team we can be,” Trestman said. He specifically lauded quarterback Jay Cutler’s resilience after a lousy first 28 minutes for the offense, and his ability to “refocus” after the roughing-the-passer penalty.

Coming and going: The Bears signed practice squad players cornerback Isaiah Frey and receiver/kick returner Rashad Ross to the 53-man roster, adding defensive tackle Roy Philon to the practice squad.

They also waived running back Shaun Draughn and receiver/ kick returner Chris Williams, and terminated the contract of tight end Matt Mulligan.

Tasty, healthy alternatives Former Frankfort resident converts favorite recipes, doesn’t sacrifice flavor

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com FRANKFORT – Once upon a time, former Frankfort resident Rachel Buchanan-Savicz took fitness for granted. She was active in high school, and her parents served nutritious food.

Then Buchanan-Savicz, now of Crystal Lake, entered the “corporate grind” – one that included doughnuts on Fridays and cake whenever someone had a birthday.

Before long, Buchanan-Savicz had gained 60 pounds. She needed to find healthy alternatives to treats – without sacrificing taste.

“If it tasted like junk, I wouldn’t want to eat it, and I’d go back to my old ways,” Buchanan-Savicz said.

So in 2010, Buchanan-Savicz began converting her favorite recipes. She substituted spaghetti squash for spaghetti, bison for beef and low-fat baked zucchini fries for deepfried potato french fries.

She fed the results to her husband, Adam, who also had some weight to lose and didn’t mind voicing objections if a recipe didn’t work. He saw results, too.

“He lost 40 pounds in six months,” Buchanan-Savicz said.

In addition to weight loss, Buchanan-Savicz saw improvement in her hair, skin and nails.

She now blogs food makeovers at sweatforsuccess. wordpress.com, admits to occasionally using small amounts of powdered sugar and doesn’t recommend black beans in brownies.

“They [the brownies] were too tough,” Buchanan-Savicz said. “I threw them away.”

Spaghetti Squash and Turkey Meatballs 1 medium spaghetti squash, halved 2 teaspoons olive oil Extra olive oil for drizzling and oiling baking pan Meatballs: 1 pound ground 99 percent lean turkey breast 1 egg (egg white only if you want to go leaner) 1 T. dried parsley 1 teaspoon dried basil 1 teaspoon garlic powder ½ cup whole wheat Panko bread crumbs ¼ cup fresh grated Parmesan cheese (omit if you are dairy-free) 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes 1 teaspoon salt Sauce: One large can San Maza (no tomatoes) Fresh basil, to taste Crushed garlic, to taste Olive oil, to taste Combine all ingredients together and do not overmix. Form into 2-inch diameter balls and place on a oiled baking sheet. Bake at 375 for 35 minutes or until a meat thermometer reads 165 degrees.

Add meatballs to your favorite Marinara or puree above sauce ingredients. Remove seeds and pulp from squash; drizzle with olive oil. Place on an oiled backing sheet and bake at 425 degrees for 30 minutes or until fork tender.

Let cool and fluff the inside with a fork to reveal “spaghetti strands.”

Put stands in a saute pan with 2 teaspoons olive oil and saute 4 minutes. Remove from heat toss with sauce and meatballs; and serve. Yield: 4 servings

It is true that children think they know much more than they do. As we age, we realize that our parents and teachers weren’t as limited as we thought. And many feel that a day without learning something new is a day wasted.

Bridge always seems to present new ideas. Take today’s deal as an example. South is in six diamonds. How should he handle the trump suit to maximize the chance of losing at most one trick? And suppose a wheel has come off and South is in seven diamonds. Then what should he do?

In the auction, North might have rebid three spades, which would have shown only twocard support because with three spades he would have responded two spades, not one no-trump. But with length and strength in the rounded suits, rebidding three no-trump was sensible.

The only problem revolves around the trump suit. If South must play it for no losers, he has two choices: Cash his ace (hoping East has the singleton king) or lead dummy’s queen (hoping West has the singleton jack).

Mathematically, they are equal.

In six diamonds, though, I thought the best play was to cash the ace first. But the free software package SuitPlay (suitplay.com) claims that starting with South’s nine is better. If West plays low, declarer ducks in the dummy.

And if that loses to East’s jack, South cashes his ace next. The probability of success is 81.3 percent. One lives and learns.

When I’m with the high school group of kids at my church, I try to extend myself and talk, but they never reciprocate much. I always have to try to think of something to say and be careful I don’t embarrass myself. Especially around guys, I feel awkward and self-conscious.

Use of antibiotics in animals is serious health issue Dear Doctor K: In a recent column on antibiotics, you didn’t mention their use in meat and poultry as a cause of antibiotic resistance. Hasn’t this contributed to the problem?

Dear Reader: You’re correct. In the United States, food-producing animals such as cattle and poultry are regularly treated with antibiotics. This has contributed to antibiotic resistance: bacteria that are no longer susceptible to antibiotics.

How do bacteria become resistant? Let’s say you take penicillin to treat a bacterial infection.

The bacteria in your body are constantly dividing and multiplying; one bacterium can grow into more than a million in 24 hours.

Each time the bacteria divide, there is a small chance that one of their genes will develop a mutation. Sometimes those mutations allow the bacteria to resist being killed by the antibiotic and to pass the resistance on to their offspring.

Other times bacteria carry mutated genes in little circles of DNA called plasmids that can be passed between bacteria, thereby spreading antibiotic resistance.

Now suppose you are infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Standard antibiotics won’t treat

Overuse of antibiotics in people is the most common cause of drug resistance, but another important cause is antibiotic use in food-producing animals. As in humans, treating animals with antibiotics can produce resistant bacteria.

Why are antibiotics given to food-producing animals?

Sometimes the animals develop bacterial infections. Other times antibiotics are given to animals in a herd to prevent the spread of a bacterial disease that has developed in a few animals of the herd.

However, there is another reason that antibiotics are given to food-producing animals. Several decades ago, it was discovered that feeding animals small doses of certain antibiotics every day caused the animals to gain more weight. Much of that weight is in extra muscle (meat).

Why this happens is uncertain.

My guess is that the antibiotics affect the bacteria in the animals’

intestines, and that this, in turn, causes the animals to absorb more nutrients.

People can get infected when they eat meat contaminated with resistant bacteria. Even nonmeat eaters aren’t safe. Resistant bacteria may contaminate water through animal waste, and that water may be used to irrigate produce. (To be clear, meat and produce can harbor bacteria whether or not they are resistant to antibiotics.)

Take these steps to reduce your risk of infection with foodborne bacteria: • Thoroughly cook meat, poultry and eggs.

• Use separate cutting boards and utensils for raw meat and other foods.

• Wash your hands frequently, and always after touching raw meat or poultry.

• Don’t drink raw milk.

We must also limit antibiotic use in animal agriculture, as antibiotic resistance is a growing and increasingly serious problem for humans.

Dr. Wallace: I’m a 16-year-old girl who needs your advice. I have a steady boyfriend, and we care about each other very much. The people next door want me to babysit for them five evenings a week, Monday through Friday.

They will pay me $100 a week. My hours will be from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

That comes to about $6.75 an hour. I admit I really could use the money.

The problem is that if I take the job, I’ll only get to see my boyfriend on the weekend. I asked my boyfriend what he thought and he said it was my decision. What would be your advice? – Jody, Denver, Colorado Dear Jody: It all depends on how important the money is to you, and possibly to your family.

One hundred dollars a week is a lot of money, but you will deserve every penny by being a conscientious and dependable sitter.

My advice? Take the job and see how things progress with your social life. You can always quit if it doesn’t work out well.

Dr. Wallace: I’d like to comment to the girl who was constantly being beaten by her boyfriend, but couldn’t break up with him because she “loved” him.

I, too, loved Ken. In fact, we were engaged to be married after high school. He was a senior, and I was a junior. One night when we were out, we got into an argument and he got so upset he punched me and gave me a black eye. He cried real tears and promised he would never do it again. Well, he never kept his promise. He hit me time after time, and it kept getting worse.

’TWEEN 12 & 20 Robert Wallace Naturally, because I loved him, I forgave him each time and told myself this would be the last incident. Then one day he beat me so hard he knocked me unconscious. After I woke up, he cried and said he would never lay another finger on me.

When I got home, my dad figured out what had happened. I was out of crazy stories and lies on why I was battered and bruised. Dad called the police and Ken got a 30-day stay in jail.

I finally had to have corrective surgery so I could breathe out of my nose normally. The doctor told me that if he had hit me a little harder I might have died.

Our entire family ended up moving to another state. Ken wasn’t always a troublemaker, and at one time was a wonderful, sweet guy.

His problem was that he couldn’t control his temper.

So girls, if your boyfriend is beating you, please believe me, the beatings will not stop until the guy gets professional psychiatric help. Life is too short to go through it as a punching bag. Don’t wait as long as I did. Let his FIRST punch be his last.

By RAE PADILLA FRANCOEUR More Content Now At this year’s BookExpo America in New York City, Tavis Smiley spoke at a breakfast gathering about the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the grueling, fraught last year of King’s life.

Smiley, himself an eloquent and moving speaker, said that the years since King’s 1968 assassination have not served King’s legacy well.

He is remembered primarily for the sniper’s bullet that brought him down on April 4, 1968, for his unequivocal stand on nonviolence, and for little else beyond a “handful of fanciful speeches.”

“Ironically, his martyrdom has undermined his message.”

Smiley said he intended for this new book, “Death of a King: The Real Story of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Final Year,” to restore some depth to our recollections of this great and complicated man.

Between April 4, 1967, when King first publicly spoke out about the link between the war in Vietnam and racism, and April 4, 1968, when he was killed, he refused to defer to his detractors who strongly urged him to reconsider.

Almost twice as many blacks as whites were fighting and dying in Vietnam, King argued. The link between the war, unnecessary and violent, racism and poverty is there for all to see. If we oppose racism, we must oppose the war.

Many of King’s closest supporters and advisors told him that he would make a grave and irrational error if he linked the war to racism.

They suggested his ego was clouding his judgment. Why endanger their standing and alienate their most valuable advocate? President Lyndon Johnson was conducting a committed, vigorous campaign in Vietnam at the time. Attacking the war was tantamount to attacking Johnson, one of the blacks’ most useful and influential allies.

Friends, aides, media and followers opposed and ultimately vilified King, even in his presence in public gatherings.

Adding to the harsh stressors were 127 race riots in the summer of 1967, an escalation in the number of threats against King’s life and the FBI’s ramped-up campaign to discredit King at any cost.

Among the most crushing incidents was a march in Memphis, just weeks before his assassination, that took a violent turn. King was in the march and the media levied harsh blame on the flagging crusader.

According to polls, during that agonizing year for King and for the entire country, three-quarters of the American

The youngest Nobel Laureate in history had been marginalized. His ideas about poverty linked to the war and about nonviolence were suddenly out of date.

Black power seemed to supplant passive resistance. What King and the movement achieved was yesterday’s news.

The country was moving on in new and difficult directions.

King was badly hurt. Yet he felt immensely responsible, as if he, by sheer effort and will, could unite opposing factions and restore nonviolent civil disobedience as the operative tool.

The exhausted and depressed man,

growing more tired and embattled by the day, never gave up. He produced rousing sermons of hope for all time, sermons that were surely written as a means to personal inspiration.

The book does a creditable job building a taut and distressing arc.

From the day of the announcement to the day of King’s death by gunshot, the story grows heavy and weary and terribly sad.

In the last pages, the author brings us to a clearing, where King seems to have come to terms with the cruelest of his torments – his fragile mortality.

“I’d rather be dead than afraid,” he tells his friends.
