Three men arrested following Crest Hill phone store robbery

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Three men were arrested last week after allegedly robbing their third T-Mobile store in a week.

Police Chief Dwayne Wilkerson said about 7:45 p.m.

Thursday three men went into the store at 1701 N. Larkin and threatened employees at gunpoint to steal cellphones. No one was injured.

Investigating officers received information on the getaway vehicle and matched it to a Markham residence, Wilkerson said.

Jamarcus D. Burton, 20, of the 16500 block of Honore Avenue in Markham, Kenneth Sheriff, 19, of the 1500 block of State Line Road in Calumet

City and Dakhari D. Manney, 20, of the 16800 block of Orchard Ridge in Hazel Crest, were taken into Jamarcus custody and D. Burton questioned at the Lockport police station, Wilkerson said.

“No phones were recovered, but officers did recover money and Kenneth a gun,” WilkerSheriff son said.

Burton and Sheriff were booked into the Will County jail on charges of armed robbery, unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful restraint.

Manney was charged with aggravated robbery.

Wilkerson said the three were tied to Dakhari similar robD. Manney beries committed Sept. 3 in Bolingbrook and Sept. 5 in Lockport. In those instances, two men robbed T-Mobile stores at gunpoint. No one was injured in either of those robberies.

“Besides being matched to other stores in Lockport and Bolingbrook, they may have been involved in recent similar robberies in Indiana,” Wilkerson said.

All three are being held on $1 million bonds.

State officials concerned that Rt. 66 mural may be too bold

QUICK NEWS Joliet viaduct closes Tuesday JOLIET – The Van Buren Street railroad viaduct downtown will be closed Tuesday for work that is expected to be completed by Sept. 22.

The viaduct, located east of Scott Street and west of Michigan Street, will be closed for bridge work that is being done for the Joliet Gateway Center transportation campus.

Detours will be posted.

Work slated at lot JOLIET – The entrance to the York Avenue parking lot will be closed for construction starting Wednesday while a temporary entrance opens up.

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Steve Lazzara didn’t get the answer he wanted when he sought approval from state transportation officials Friday for a mural that would welcome motorists to a Will County stretch of the Route 66 corridor.

But he did get one thing: a sense of direction.

“We showed them our initial designs and plans and they thought they were too bold, too visually distracting,” said Lazzara, senior planner for the county’s Land Use Department. “But [the Illinois Department of Transportation] is going to partner with us and talk to us about the type of paint scheme that could work and the potential for murals and more lighting.”

Lazzara was among a handful of county and city staff that met with IDOT officials Friday to discuss painting a mural on a BNSF viaduct on Route 53. Officials

hope the mural will create something of a gateway to the local Route 66 corridor, boosting visibility of the county’s section of the historic road.

Because Route 53 is a state-owned road, the final image would need IDOT approval, he said in a voice mail response to questions about the meeting. Lazzara could not be reached for further comment.

The push for signage is one of many components to the county’s Illinois 53 Corridor project – a long-term plan mapped out earlier this year to transform an area just south of I-80, stretching to Braidwood, into a tourism magnet for Route 66 visitors.

With the viaduct signs, Lazzara told stakeholders earlier this summer they wanted something that could “really pop” and improve the look of the concrete viaduct on Route 53.

Now, they’ll have to approach the design with more subdued color schemes, with IDOT concerned that a vi-

brant mural would prove too distracting, Lazzara said.

It’s unclear where the money will come from for the signage, but the county could save if it opts for a mural wrap – or a high-performance vinyl wrap with a paint-like appearance.

A permit would cost $1,000. BNSF officials and IDOT would have to sign off on the final image.

Included in the Illinois 53 Corridor plan is additional signage along Route 66, I-80 and I-57 to steer drivers toward key destinations, such as the Gemini Giant in Wilmington, Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie and the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery, among others.

Eventually, new attractions will be added, such as an observation tower for the Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie and a major bike trail connecting the already-existing trails. New trails along Route 66 could lead tourists to attractions such as Boyd’s Quarry and the Brandon Dam and Locks.

Joliet hospice home in 10 years has become an integral part of community If you go

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – In 2004, many people had never heard of hospice, let alone grasped the need for a facility where loved ones could die with dignity.

Ten years later, Joliet Area Community Hospice has become an integral, if not beloved, member of the community, and serves as a model for other self-standing hospices being built in Illinois.

“Back then it took a lot of education to explain what a hospice home was,” said Rick Kasper, the hospice’s CEO. “It was an unknown concept at the time.”

Kasper took over after Duane Krieger retired from the position. Krieger, former Will County coroner, and the late Mary Jo Smith are credited with establishing the facility through a $3 million community fundraising effort that ended up raising $4 million.

“The community was really involved with helping us,” said Lori Senior, director of clinical services, who has worked with the hospice since the beginning. “In-patient hospice has been a concept for a long time before this. But before we always had to do it in a hospital or nursing home.”

Hospice – caring for the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the dying – has been around since the Middle Ages. But the concept took off in the U.S. in the 1980s after it received Medicare certification.

‘It’s all about comfort’ JACH features 16 patient rooms, plus other accommodations, including a family game room, a dining area, an aviary and an extensive outdoor area, including a meditative labyrinth.

The facility provides 24/7 care through its 18 nurses, 13 CNAs, five part-time doctors

“It’s all about comfort,” Senior said. “Anything that is a problem for the patient, we try to take care of.”

The most common symptoms for end-of-life patients are pain, respiratory problems, nausea/vomiting and anxiety, she said.

The hospice offers four types of care: • General inpatient: These patients make up about half of the hospice’s population at any given time, Senior said. The focus is on symptom maintenance during their last five to seven days of life.

• Routine home care: Outpatient care at the patient’s residence or at a nursing home.

Routine care also can be provided at JACH, but patients have to pay for room and board. Inpatient routine care patients make up most of the rest of the facility’s population.

Routine care cases typically last about two months, Senior

said, though some have gone on for as long as 18 months.

• Respite: The hospice offers a five-day break for caregivers of terminally ill patients.

• Continuous care: Off-site care similar to routine care, but on a 24/7 basis.

Funding is provided through Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance or private funds.

“But we don’t turn anyone away because of an inability to pay,” said Arcillius Calhoun,

director of business development. Last year the hospice provided $812,000 in free care, he said.

Helping family members The staff also focuses on family members, walking them through a difficult process.

“We try to prepare them for the death and educate them about what’s happening and how they can help,” Senior said.

One of JACH’s recent clients was Joe, a terminal bone cancer patient. Wendy, his wife, said Joe was treated for esophageal cancer in 2012. The disease returned in a new form earlier this year. He was admitted to the hospice Sept. 5 and died a few days later.

“Our doctor said there is nothing else we can do and this is the next step,” Wendy said.

She said she chose the hospice home because of her 14-yearold daughter.

“Home was not an option,” Wendy said. “You don’t want that memory for a child.”

Wendy said she has had a positive experience with JACH. “The staff is wonderful,” she said. “My daughter said she thought it was comfortable here.”

Rooms can accommodate one or two family members overnight. Families can buy meals on site. Social worker and chaplain support is available around the clock.

JACH also provides bereavement counseling for 13 months following a loved one’s death.

“We want to get them through the holidays and the first anniversary,” Senior explained.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Administrators want to make an expanded Joliet Junior College Romeoville campus into a more complete educational facility.

They presented preliminary plans to a room of about 15 staff members and sought community input on the planned expansion of the undeveloped college-owned land west of the campus at 1125 W. 135th St. “More students will actually be able to attend and finish a 2-year degree here,” said Judy Mitchell, vice president of administrative services.

Mitchell said the campus needed to expand as enrollment is expected increase over the next several years to 8,000 students.

“We’ve grown 40 percent of the last 10 years,” she said, adding that the recession stag-

nated growth. “Predictions are that this area will start to grow again.”

Currently, the Romeoville campus offers an associate in arts degree, nursing assistant training and networking CNT programs as well as a resource center, photography lab and cafe.

According to preliminary programming requests, the expansion could extend and create new programs in arts and sciences, career and technology, adult education, natural sciences and corporate and continuing education.

The expansion will be paid for through a $45 million bond issued by the college board of trustees last year. The bond, which is funded through a $4 a credit hour increase in tuition and a capital assessment fee, will be split between the Romeoville campus expansion and a new multipurpose build-

ing on the main campus at 1215 Houbolt Road in Joliet.

Dominick Demonica of Demonica Kemper Architects said the design of the new building is still in the planning stages, including how big the facility will be and if it will connect to the existing facility.

“We’re making sure the plan is flexible if this campus expands,” he said.

The expansion could provide the campus with more space for student development, including admissions, records and financial aid offices and counseling services. It also could include a campus bookstore, expanded food service, campus police and a library.

Mitchell said there would be more space for student activities and services like new student orientation, disability services, multi-cultural student affairs and academic testing and tutoring.

JOLIET – The City Council will consider annexing and issuing special use permits for two separate medical marijuana growing facilities when it meets Tuesday night.

Representatives from two companies outlined their proposals at Monday’s pre-council session: • Cresco Labs LLC is proposing a 37,600-squarefoot facility at 23224 CenterPoint Way. The 11.2 acre site would include a 42-vehicle parking lot and room for a 34,200-square-foot addition.

Joe Caltabiano, Cresco’s president, said his group is made up of Illinois businessmen who want to maintain in-state control of medical marijuana establishments allowed under state law.

Caltabiano said the facility would produce standardized capsules, sublingual tinctures, strips, sprays, topical products, patches, suppositories and pre-filled vaporizers. The site would not produce cannabis in baked goods.

• AgriCare LLC plans on using an existing 16,000-square-foot building on a 19.2 acre site at 2800 Schweitzer Road. It would eventually construct a 107,000-square-foot facility on the site.

Glenn Taylor, president of AgriCare, said the company already has opened similar medical marijuana facilities in Colorado and Connecticut.

Plans for both facilities included perimeter fencing and a slew of security measures, including onsite cameras, biometric scanners and around-the-clock guards.

Marijuana would be

grown indoors under stringent air, water and light conditions. Both groups said they plan to conduct medicinal research at their facilities, as well.

Both groups said they would use union labor for construction of the facilities.

Taylor said AgriCare would create about 100 permanent jobs.

Both businesses will be competing for the area’s one cannabis growing license.

Each requires a special use permit from the city or another government agency in order to request the license from the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

Four more companies have applied for cultivation licenses in Plainfield, Channahon and Wilton townships.

In other business, the Council also will consider entering into a business agreement with Mickey Oil Company, better known as Mickey’s One Stop, which operates a gas station, car wash and mini-mart at 1415 Plainfield Road.

Under the proposal, Mickey’s would charge a higher sales tax on liquor and convenience store items, which the city would rebate to the business through its motor fuel taxes.

City Attorney Jeff Plyman said the agreement would allow Mickey’s to charge less for gas, making the business more competitive with service stations in Crest Hill. Mickey’s is located on Joliet’s border with Crest Hill.

Plyman said the city wants to ensure it receives the same amount of taxes from the facility. Final details on the plan are expected to be unveiled at Tuesday’s meeting.

Elwood hands over documents in Walter Strawn Drive case

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – Village officials turned over documents to CenterPoint Properties by the court-ordered Monday deadline, pushing forward the ongoing case over safety at the Walter Strawn Drive railroad crossing.

An Illinois Commerce Commission administrative law judge ordered Elwood to turn over documents last month, calling CenterPoint’s request “not too burdensome or onerous.”

Paul Streicher, attorney for Elwood, said Monday the request was “voluminous,” but that the judge gave the village a reasonable amount of time to comply.

CenterPoint first requested documents, traffic study data and witness names from Elwood back in June. But village officials had refused to respond to those requests, according to CenterPoint’s attorney Michael Scotti.

The requested documents are part of a 2001 ICC case brought forward by Elwood amid safety concerns at the crossing. The crossing’s gates were broken nearly 50 times in 2013.

“We’re anxious to go forward with [the case],” Streicher said. “The judge ordered us to do it and gave us a reasonable amount of time.”

To expedite the process, CenterPoint’s attorney agreed to withdraw his initial request for witness video depositions.

A status hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Oct. 7 at the State of Illinois Building in Chicago.

Police surrounded the area after the shooting and found Maya hiding under a nearby porch a few hours later. According to police testimony, he had $60 in his pocket and identified himself as “Carlos.”

Sanders testified that Maya had identified himself to a taxi dispatcher as “Carlos.”

Maya was already a suspect in the shooting because Valle’s family had an order of protection against him. Valle got to know Maya through Facebook and ran away from home to be with him in the summer of 2012.

JOLIET – A cab driver testified Monday that he drove Erick M. Maya to Romeoville the morning Briana Valle and her mother were shot in their driveway.

“He looked stressed out, anxious. He was smoking fast.

He said something about [going to Romeoville for] a girl, but I don’t remember exactly what he said,” cab driver Stephen Sanders testified.

Maya allegedly called Sanders and had him buy tobacco before picking him up about 6 a.m. in Cicero on Feb. 13.

Sanders testified that he picked up Maya in the 5600 block of Park Avenue in Cicero and brought him to the 300 block of Emery Avenue in Romeoville.

After Sanders left, Maya

is accused of shooting and killing Valle, 15, and injuring her mother, Alicia Guerrero.

Maya is on trial for murder and attempted murder.

Just two days before the shooting, Sanders made the same trip with Maya, he Erick M. testified. Maya Maya took Sanders’ business card on that ride. Maya did not say much on the Feb. 11 ride, Sanders said, but added a $5 tip to the $55 meter and asked if he could be picked up later.

Guerrero testified last week that Valle had stayed home from school Feb. 11.

On Feb. 13, the taxi arrived at Emery Avenue about 6:45 a.m. Maya paid another $60 and said he would call for a return fare at the same rate,

Joliet council restructuring group eyes April referendum

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Concerned Citizens of Joliet plans to renew its efforts to change the structure of the Joliet City Council.

The grassroots group wants to put a binding referendum on the April 7, 2015, ballot that would change the council structure from five districts and three at-large seats to eight districts.

Efforts to put the measure on the Nov. 4 general election ballot were stymied after the City Electoral Board upheld objections Aug. 28 that the group failed to collect enough legitimate nominating petition signatures.

The group’s organizers said they were not surprised by the opposition they’ve encountered.

“We had anticipated it to be a long haul,” group spokesman Richard Rodriguez said.

“I think after what happened it gives us more momentum going into the April election. It gave us a lot of publicity and it was an educational opportunity to raise awareness.”

The group now must restart the petitioning process.

The number of petitions required was a major issue in the group’s first attempt to place the measure on the ballot. Since no specific Joliet questions were held in the last gubernatorial election in 2010, the exact number of Jolietans who voted in Will and Kendall county precincts could not be determined. Estimates ranged from 2,178 to 2,685.

Concerned Citizens gathered 2,392 signatures. Of those, 1,465 were deemed valid. Signatures not accepted were rejected for a number of reasons, including names and addresses not matching county voting records.

Rodriguez said Concerned Citizens is looking at a couple of strategies as it begins the petitioning process again, including registering voters and reaching out to the African-American community for support.

Rodriguez said the group has begun registering about 200 voters a week, and hopes to register 1,500 during the next few weeks.

The referendum petition deadline for the April election is Jan. 7.

Concerned Citizens maintains that the current council structure, set up in the 1950s, is outdated because of the city’s tremendous growth. The group says the five-district map, which was updated in 2013, disenfranchises minority voters and voters in the far west, since at-large council members tend to be elected from central Joliet.

On Friday, the group released a proposed redistricting map, a step it hadn’t taken previously. Rodriguez said the group planned to meet with voters in each of the communities to look at the map and make recommendations on how it could be adjusted.

A woman riding in the passenger seat suffered a fractured hip, four broken ribs and a serious injury to her foot.

Fitzpatrick said Oswald was an active member of the Will County ABATE, A Brotherhood Aimed Toward Education, which promotes motorcycle safety and legislation to protect riders.

Judge Policandriotes said Monday she will consider testimony about the crash before deciding a sentence for Henderson next week.

JOLIET – Ronald Oswald, the motorcycle rider killed two years ago in a Plainfield crash caused by a driver on drugs, died doing what he loved.

About 3 p.m. July 14, 2012, Oswald, 57, of Minooka, was on his way to meet Fitzpatrick and other riders for a soldier being deployed when he approached County Line Road on Route 126.

Andrew W. Henderson, 26, of Palos Park, had heroin and Vicodin in his system when his Dodge Durango rear-ended a Nissan Altima that was stopped to turn onto County Line Road. The impact pushed the car into Oswald’s path and

he was thrown from the bike.

Henderson pleaded guilty in May to two counts of aggravated driving under the influence of drugs. In exchange, other traffic and DUI charges have been dropped and prosecutors have agreed not to seek more than a nine-year prison sentence from Judge Carla Policandriotes. Henderson could be sentenced from probation up to 14 years behind bars.

“I caught a glimpse of something going by and heard a loud crash. Then I heard another loud crash and then a loud thud. I saw the vehicle that hit the Nissan start rolling over and [Henderson] being ejected,” Jeffrey Duncan, a witness to the crash, testified Monday.

Lincoln-Way budget forecasts slight surplus fsarver@gmail.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way High School District 210 saw expenses increase for this year’s budget, but officials anticipate a budget surplus.

The surplus may come to about $150,000 for the 2014-15 school year in what will be a tight budget, said Ronald Sawin, the school district’s assistant superintendent for business. The district achieved a surplus by renegotiating its contract with a custodial services company and cutting some staff members, he said.

“We continue to monitor and implement cuts in the budget where we can that do not directly impact students,” he said.

This year, the school district reduced the size of its JROTC Air Force program and cut sev-

eral teacher positions because of low state aid and student enrollment. Sawin said those staff cuts were not based on the budget.

The school board last week unanimously adopted its roughly $101 million budget for the 2014-15 school year. Operating revenue is at $82.6 million, while operating expenses are at $82.5 million, Sawin said.

District Superintendent Scott Tingley said the school district’s goal is to build up reserves depleted over the years and break even.

“We’re in a similar situation with many school districts in terms of reducing expenditures or keep them level while waiting for that revenue stream to catch back up,” he said.

construction projects. The school district devotes about 74 percent of its operating budget to teacher salaries and benefits, he said.

For this school year’s budget, expenses increased 1.4 percent over last year because officials anticipate all their vendors – such as utility companies – will raise their prices.

The cost of health insurance and teacher salaries also contributed to higher expenses.

“When you start putting all these pieces together, even with cuts we made, we still had to increase our expenditures a bit,” Sawin said.

The Lincoln-Way school district has struggled with shrinking state aid for more than six years, Sawin said.

“I think the hospice has fulfilled a need in this community for end-of-life care,” Orenic said. “There comes a time when you can’t cure the disease and you have to refocus on comfort. We provided that care for both the patients and their families.”

The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – Bob Crewe, co-writer of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry” and many other pop hits, died last week. He was 83.

Crewe’s brother, Dan Crewe, said Monday in an email that the producer, songwriter and “Jersey Boys” lyricist died Sept. 11 in Scarborough, Maine.

Crewe co-wrote a number of memorable but minor hits, including Freddy Cannon’s “Tallahassee Lassie” before helping put together The Four Seasons and meeting future collaborator Bob Gaudio. Songs written by the two helped The Four Seasons define an era in music with radio hits like “Sherry,” “Walk Like a Man” and “Rag Doll” that not only resonated at the time, but also continue to pop up in film, television and as historic markers for the baby boomer generation.

The Newark, New Jersey-born Crewe was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1992.

Crewe teamed with Frank Slay while living in Philadelphia on a number of minor hits before issuing two solo albums of his own.

He first met The Four Seasons when he hired them to provide backing vocals for demo recordings in the early 1960s.

Crewe also provided the lyrics for “Jersey Boys,” the Four Seasons Broadway musical that won the Tony Award for best musical and was recently released on film.

Ruth graduated from Joliet Township High School and attended Moody Bible Institute. On December 25, 1939, she married George E. Williamson at the Richards Street Methodist Church.

Survived by two daughters, Janet (Mick) Brei of Belvidere, IL and Joyce (David) Hinds of Madison, WI. Four grandchildren, Jody (John) Ortgiesen, Jim (Karen) Brei, David Brei and Anne (Todd Beam) Kilby. She was frequently an exhibitor at local arts and craft shows. Ruth worked at St. Patrick’s Residence as an Activities Director until her retirement.

Durbin denies ‘bullying’ businesses

CHICAGO – U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin is unabashedly defending his name-calling and other attacks on Illinois businesses looking to locate their headquarters overseas – moves his Republican challenger has described as “bullying” and the kind of anti-business behavior that’s hampering the state’s economic recovery.

Durbin, who’s seeking his fourth U.S. Senate term against dairy entrepreneur and GOP state Sen. Jim Oberweis, shined a spotlight on Deerfield-based Walgreen and other companies that considered relocating to take advantage of lower tax rates, calling them “deserters” and unpatriotic. The U.S. Senate’s second-most-powerful Democrat also started petitions, held news conferences and introduced legislation to prevent such companies from getting federal contracts.

“I think it’s my job,” Durbin said in an interview with The Associated Press. “If an Illinois senator won’t stand up to keep companies in this state and in this country he’s got the backbone of a melting ice cream cone.”

Oberweis argued it’s more evidence Durbin has grown arrogant and “has no idea how to create jobs in the private economy.” He says the solution to so-called corporate inversions – when a U.S. company merges with or buys a foreign company then moves its legal address overseas – is to make Illinois and the U.S. more business-friendly by lowering taxes and cutting regulations he says are too burdensome.

Durbin outlined his views on a range of issues during the hourlong interview with AP.

The report released last month found that 245 workers hired as “staff assistants” since 2002 were employed in a process that often skirted state rules prohibiting hiring based on political connections. Quinn has said he addressed hiring issues by calling for a systemic review, abolishing the position and laying off those still holding the title.

IDOT officials announced Friday that more than 150 initially hired as staff assistants now work for the state in other positions, mostly at IDOT. Rauner said Quinn should fire those them – pointing to individual examples in news reports – and vowed to work with a federal hiring monitor if elected.

Rauner is making his first bid for public office.

Nearly 100 groups form school funding coalition

AURORA – Nearly 100 organizations are joining together to push Illinois lawmakers to pass a school funding reform proposal in the spring.

Funding Illinois’ Future members include community foundations, civil rights organizations, school officials, and business and education reform groups statewide. All support the passage of a school funding proposal sponsored by Democratic state Sen. Andy Manar of Bunker Hill.

The legislation would overhaul Illinois’ dated school funding formula, first put in place in 1997.

While there’s wide agreement that the state’s funding formula should be altered, how it should be changed remains under debate.

If Manar’s bill is approved, it would direct more state money to poorer rural districts at the expense of wealthier suburban districts. The bill passed out of the state Senate last spring. A group of top House Democrats have been studying the issue and plan to hold hearings on the bill in the fall.

Opponents said the bill unfairly penalizes some districts able to spend more money on students because of rich property tax bases.

Teen creates anti-cyberbullying program

NAPERVILLE – A 14-year-old Naperville teen has developed a computer program to help work against cyberbullying.

Trisha Prabhu’s efforts began as a class project but quickly expanded and got the attention of science and technology experts from around the country, the Arlington Heights Daily Herald reported Sunday.

Prabhu, who said she was cyberbullied when she was younger, said she’s mostly finished with coding for the program that gives pop-up warnings when someone attempts to post a potentially harmful or offensive message on social media sites. She said she “knew she had to do something to stop” the problem.

Prabhu is scheduled to present the add-on program at the Google Science Fair in California later this month where judges could award her a grand prize of $50,000 in scholarship money and a 10-day trip to the Galápagos Islands.

She said she has future plans to develop versions of the program for smartphone systems.

31 cars derail from freight train near Fort Wayne

NEW HAVEN, Ind. – More than two dozen freight cars derailed near Fort Wayne from a train traveling from Ohio to Illinois.

The freight train’s derailment happened about 6 a.m. Monday near the city of New Haven a few miles east of Fort Wayne.

Norfolk Southern spokesman Dave Pidgeon tells The Journal Gazette no one was hurt and no hazardous materials were released. He says 26 derailed cars ended up on their side and five remained upright.

The 84-car train was traveling from Bellevue, Ohio, to Decatur, Illinois, when it derailed.

WANE-TV reported the derailment blocked at least three roads in the area and limited traffic to one lane on another.

Decades later, Vietnam soldiers finally receive Medal of Honor

By JOSH LEDERMAN The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Two Vietnam War soldiers – one still living, one killed in action – received the Medal of Honor in a White House ceremony Monday, nearly 50 years after they threw themselves into harm’s way to protect their brothers in combat. President Barack Obama praised the soldiers as patriots whose sacrifices never had been fully realized by a nation divided over the legacy of the Vietnam War. Army Command Sgt. Maj. Bennie G. Adkins survived his injuries. Army Spc. Donald P. Sloat did not. It took an act of Congress to allow each to receive the medal so many decades after the fact.

“Over the decades, our Vietnam veterans didn’t always receive the thanks and respect they deserved. That’s a fact,” Obama said. “But as we have been reminded again today, our Vietnam vets were patriots and are patriots.”

“You served with valor, you made us proud, and your service is with us for eternity,” Obama told the audience, which included Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel – himself

a Vietnam veteran – and others who received the Medal of Honor after coming home from Vietnam.

Drafted into the Army at age 22 from his home in rural Oklahoma, Adkins was deployed three times to Vietnam with the Special Forces. He was already being recognized for actions during his second combat tour when, in 1966, a large North Vietnamese force attacked his camp.

For 38 hours, Adkins fought in close combat against enemy forces, dodging exploding mortar rounds as he dragged wounded soldiers to safety. When the order finally was given to evacuate camp, Adkins refused to leave comrades behind.

By the time he and his group made its way to the extraction point, the last evacuation helicopter had left. So Adkins led his fellow soldiers into the jungle, where they evaded enemy soldiers and even a tiger before being evacuated 48 hours later.

Adkins, visibly older and walking with a cane, stood tall in his blue uniform and epaulettes, saluting fellow troops after Obama draped the medal around his neck. Adkins now lives in Opelika, Alabama.

“This Medal of Honor belongs to the other 16 Special Forces soldiers with me,” Adkins said after the ceremony.

Sloat, of Coweta, Oklahoma, was 20 years old when his squad was patrolling a stretch of territory known for frequent North Vietnamese and Viet Cong activity. Unwittingly, the soldier at the head of the pack triggered a tripwire, detonating a booby-trap set there by enemy forces.

The grenade rolled down the hill toward Sloat, and when he picked it up, he realized it was too late to throw it out of harm’s way. So with the explosion imminent, Sloat held on to the grenade, pulling it close and bending over so that his body would shield his fellow soldiers from the blast.

Sloat’s brother, William, accepted the medal from the president.

Medal of Honor recommendations typically must be made within two years of the act of heroism, and the medal presented within three years.

By ALBA MORA ROCA The Associated Press CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico – Hurricane Odile blazed a trail of destruction Monday through Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula that leveled everything from ramshackle homes to luxury hotels and big box stores, leaving entire neighborhoods as disaster zones.

About 30,000 tourists were being put up in temporary shelters in hotels, and Los Cabos international airport remained closed. Emergency officials reported that 135 people were treated for minor injuries from flying glass or falling objects, but no serious injuries or deaths were reported so far.

Odile, which made landfall near Cabo San Lucas the previous night as a powerful Category 3 hurricane, toppled trees, power poles and road signs along the main highway, which at one point was swamped by rushing floodwaters.

Countless windows were blown out of rental cars and high-end hotel rooms, and resort facades crumbled to the ground.

“From what we have seen around here, everything is pretty much destroyed,” said Alejandro Tealdi, a 32-year-old resident of Cabo San Lucas. His home was damaged and suffered some flooding, but nobody was hurt. “In the seven years I’ve been here, I’ve never

seen anything hit like this.”

Luis Felipe Puente, national coordinator for Civil Protection, said most of the area’s power poles were blown over, leaving 239,000 people in the state of Baja California Sur without electricity. Many were also without drinkable water. Ports were closed.

“It’s the entire corridor” between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, said Deneb Poli, a medical worker at the Hotel Melia Cabo Real.

She said the resort’s guests and employees were fine, but electricity and phone lines were down and cellphone coverage was spotty. “There are parts of hotels that are completely collapsed. ... The damage is pretty extensive.”

PARIS – As more than two dozen nations pledged Monday to help Iraq fight the Islamic State militants, the United States said it was open to talking to Iran about a role in resolving the crisis, despite Washington’s earlier opposition to Tehran even attending the conference.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry ruled out any military coordination with Iran, which in the end was not invited to Paris.

“That doesn’t mean that we are opposed to the idea of communicating to find out if they will come on board, or under what circumstances, or whether there is the possibility of a change,” Kerry told a small group of reporters.

France and Iraq see Shiite-powerhouse Iran as an interlocutor who could bring its influence to bear in the region against the Sunni extremists of the Islamic State group; but some Arab states, such as Saudi Arabia, disagree.

The U.S. opposed a place for Iran at the conference.

But Tehran, which has political and military influence with its neighbor Iraq, still managed to be part of the

conversation.

The absence of Iran underscored the conflicting sensitivities and complex politics in the region as Western countries seek to battle the Islamic State group, which has taken control of large parts of Iraq and Syria.

The meeting of foreign ministers from Asia, the Middle East and the West was a first step toward deciding who does what in a multilayered offensive against the Islamic State group. As envisioned

by France and Iraq, the effort would include intensifying airstrikes, cutting off financing and helping Baghdad cope through humanitarian aid and reconstruction. There would be no combat troops on the ground, however.

As the conference began, two French jets took off over Iraq in France’s first reconnaissance missions over the country in a sign of the larger battle ahead. The United States has led airstrikes over Iraq since August.

“We are asking for airborne operations to be continued regularly against terrorist sites.

We must not allow them to set up sanctuaries. We must pursue them wherever they are,” Iraqi President Fouad Massoum said, an apparent reference to neighboring Syria.

Oklahoma City bombing memorial adds new exhibits

By KRISTI EATON The Associated Press OKLAHOMA CITY – A key piece of evidence, hundreds of oral testimonies and new artifacts were unveiled Monday at the Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum dedicated to the deadly 1995 bombing.

The additions are part of a nearly $8 million project that aims to attract a new generation of visitors to the structure, including those too young to remember the attack by Timothy McVeigh on the Alfred P.

Murrah Federal Building that killed 168 people and injured hundreds more.

Detailed information about the investigation of the attack has been added to the museum for the first time. Among the evidence now on display is the 1977 Mercury Grand Marquis that McVeigh was driving when he was pulled over and arrested north of Oklahoma City the day of the bombing.

“People get to see from beginning to end what did happen here in Oklahoma City,” said Susan Winchester, the

chairwoman of the Oklahoma City National Memorial Foundation, who lost her sister in the blast.

Winchester said victims’ family members visited the museum on Sunday and were overwhelmed with the new artifacts and enhanced exhibits.

Patrick Gallagher of Gallagher and Associates, the company planning and implementing the improvements, echoed Winchester, saying the additions will help visitors see the story “come full circle to a justice-served perspective.”

On April 19, 1995, McVeigh drove a truck filled with fertilizer and fuel oil to the front of the federal building and detonated the makeshift bomb. He was executed for the crime, while co-conspirator Terry Nichols is serving life in prison.

The enhancements include more than 1,100 new pieces of exhibits, new interactive stations, and video and newspaper coverage.

In one installation, a large map of the United States shows how the bombing reached be-

yond state lines. One example shows how, before the attack, McVeigh was attending a gun show in Akron, Ohio, while Nichols was committing a robbery in Arkansas.

In another room plays a recording of a water resource board meeting that was taking place the morning of the bombing. The meeting was moving along normally until 9:02 a.m., when an explosion is heard and chaos ensues. A panel then lights up and shows photos of each of the victims killed in the blast.

Even amid the rush for enjoyment, Gazans grimly note that none of Hamas’ stated objectives – lifting the blockade and allowing the opening of an airport and a sea port – was achieved.

Generation gap: Young Scots favor independence

A generation gap has opened up, with younger voters more inclined to back independence and their elders tending to say they want to remain in the United Kingdom.

Support for the status quo is strongest among the over60s, who worry about the consequences that breaking free would have on pensions, health care and savings; the pro-independence movement is largely being driven by under-40s. Neck-and-neck in the polls, the rival campaigns have called on core supporters to make a last ditch attempt to swing the vote by making the debate a family affair.

The young have been urged to visit parents and grandparents to explain why they should support separation.

The No camp has launched a counteroffensive by asking seniors to win young hearts and minds with their wisdom.

Opinion surveys indicate more than 63 percent of that age group is expected to vote in favor of the union. As older people are more likely to be on the electoral roll, there has been a huge drive to get young-

er people engaged in the Yes campaign.

Interest in the referendum is sky high. A total of 4,285,323 people, or 97 percent of the voting-age population, have registered to vote in the referendum. That’s an increase of 300,000 compared to registra-

tion figures in 2012.

The turnout for Thursday’s ballot could exceed 85 percent, compared to the just over 50 percent who voted in the last Scottish Parliament elections in 2011, and the 63.8 percent who turned out for the 2010 British parliamentary election.

Many people in the rest of Britain recently have awakened to the possibility that Scotland might leave. Thousands of Union Jack-waving demonstrators gathered in London’s Trafalgar Square on Monday in a last-minute show of affection for England’s northern neighbor.

Among the electorate deciding Scotland’s fate are 124,000 16- and 17-year-olds who will be voting for the first time.

Many of these new voters are expected to support independence. But conventional wisdom holds that older voters are more likely to actually cast their ballots, a factor that could help the anti-independence “Better Together” campaign.

Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, who leads the pro-independence forces, described the Generation Yes campaign as “inspired” and said young voters now have a great excuse to pop around their grandparents’ house for a traditional Sunday lunch.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – After a ruinous war, Gaza is rushing back to a veneer of normalcy at astonishing speed. Street cafes and beaches are packed with people until late at night. Families crowd the few public parks. Wedding halls are booked solid.

Gazans who endured 50 days of devastating Israeli bombardment are now eager to enjoy some life. Far from a celebration, however, Gazans themselves acknowledge the revelry is only to thinly mask trauma and widespread despair.

Many complain that none of the gains they hoped for from the war have been realized.

Almost none express any optimism for change in the misery in the tiny, densely populated Mediterranean coastal strip, which is suffocating under seven years of blockade by Israel and Egypt and is under the iron rule of the Hamas militant group.

“We go out just to steal a moment of joy,” said Rami Ali, a 33-year-old bank employee sitting with friends at a seaside cafe. “We don’t know what will happen tomorrow; we might have another war.”

He said nothing can help them avoid the reminders of the onslaught – “the destruction of homes, the power outages, the lack of any progress on easing the blockade.”

Illinois fumbles opportunity for football rivalry There’s been a lot of fanfare regarding the nonconference opponents that Northern Illinois’ football team will face in the years to come.

Boston College, Nebraska, Ohio State, Iowa – it’s an impressive list of names. But there’s one school that is conspicuously absent.

So why won’t the University of Illinois square off against NIU on the gridiron? Afraid they’ll lose, perhaps?

It almost seems to us as if the Illini are ducking the Huskies, who for the past few years have laid an indisputable claim to being the best college football team in Illinois.

Other Big Ten teams have stepped up – and been beaten by the Huskies. So why isn’t Illinois on the schedule?

Here’s the fact, the current standing of the two programs aside: Illinois has two public universities that are members of the NCAA’s Football Bowl Subdivision, and they almost never play each other. Their last meeting came in 2010, when the Illini held off the Huskies, 28-22, at Memorial Stadium in Champaign.

This is a tremendous waste of a potential rivalry game, which could draw a lot of fans to the stadium of either team.

The crowd of 41,139 who saw Northern Illinois top Northwestern at Ryan Field last week is proof of that.

That was about 2,000 more fans than the Wildcats’ average home crowd in 2013, and 7,000 more than showed up to see the ’Cats take on California the week before.

It was also more than the 38,561 people who saw Illinois come back to beat Western Kentucky earlier that afternoon.

If Illinois’ officials don’t feel the 24,000-seat Huskie Stadium facilities are big enough for them, perhaps the two teams could play at Soldier Field every other year.

Both schools have plenty of alumni in the Chicago area.

A look around at the teams in the Big Ten this season shows that a trend of declining football performance in the conference is continuing. Talent is leaving the Midwest for warmer climes and domes that host teams in the SEC, among others.

Creating another “big game” for Illinois’ college football programs could be one more incentive to persuade players to come to Illinois schools after high school.

It would certainly be entertaining for fans, who no doubt would rather watch Illinois play NIU than see the Illini take on Youngstown State, or the Huskies face Presbyterian (that’s a school in Tennessee.)

So let’s get a state series together. Both of these schools are publicly funded, and an annual Illinois vs.

NIU football game is one the public would like to see.

THE FIRST AMENDMENT

Money is talking in state races The Illinois House Democrats launched their direct mail and TV program weeks earlier than the House Republicans in an attempt to knock the GOP candidates down before they even had a chance to stand up.

The mail started going out not long after the mid-August Illinois State Fair. Four years ago, during a national Republican tidal wave, the House Republicans preemptively launched their advertising program in mid-September, catching the Democrats off guard. The Republicans won a few seats they might not have picked off had they started at the usual time. The Democrats learned a valuable lesson: They raised an absolute ton of money and began their mail and TV programs even earlier.

VIEWS Rich Miller As a result, the Republicans, who don’t have much money, have been buried by hundreds of thousands of dollars in early Democratic advertising.

And the Democrats also clearly have beaten the Republicans to the punch when it comes to parroting the “message track” used by the current leader in the governor’s race, Republican Bruce Rauner.

Rauner’s been running his “Shake up Springfield” ads all year long. He’s spent millions building his anti-incumbent, outsider message of term limits, tax cuts and property tax freezes.

But if you look at what the Democrats are doing everywhere in the state, the long-entrenched super-majority party is running ads very similar to Rauner’s. They are, in one GOP operative’s view, protecting their members by portraying Republican challengers as tax-loving incumbents and “tying them to the dysfunction.”

“Mel Thillens in charge of our tax dollars is as reckless as a bull in a china shop,” blares the headline on a recent House Democratic mailer that attacks the Park Ridge Republican.

“Mel Thillens never met a tax increase he didn’t like,” the claim is made on the mailer’s other side, noting that Thillens had voted to raise property taxes by almost 50 percent and

food or other food not cooked at home. Restaurant portions are typically far too large for a recommended serving.

In America, we want a lot of value for our money.

Much of the food we eat has added sugar, which harms our bodies in a number of ways.

Studies show that eating much added sugar can have harmful effects on metabolism, add belly fat, affect insulin production and create cholesterol. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition has directly linked the eating of large amounts of sugar to high weight gain and obesity.

We like to overeat during special occasions with the optimistic mindset that we’ll burn it off later. We often don’t. Although weight gain is the result of a progression

of nutritional choices that accumulate over time, those spikes in calories during the holidays are obstacles that we don’t get over. If you gain 5 pounds over Christmas, you might lose 4 in the following weeks. Not all of it. That adds up.

In the past decades our food has gotten steadily cheaper. Yet much of it isn’t the kind of food that we should be eating. Walk into any convenience store and the number of food choices is almost overwhelming. But a lot of it is factory-made and low-nutrition.

It’s also the only kind of food that poor people in food deserts can get. In many small towns, particularly in places like the Nebraska Panhandle, if you don’t have access to a

car to drive to a grocery store, the available food within walking distance is processed, cheap and poor quality.

Although it seems that the populace is becoming smarter about this, people still drink too much soda and sugar-laden fruit juices. The easiest way to trick your brain that you haven’t already consumed your daily amount of calories is to drink them. Although New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s ban on soda sizes in the city was correctly rejected for being an overreach of power, the underlying message was well-founded.

Drinking 44 ounces of soda is bad for your health. No one needs to drink that much pop in one sitting.

In the modern age, many of us work in offices. It’s easy

to see how that reduces the amount of calories burned at work compared to a hundred years ago. The simple response to that: • If you’re not getting physical activity at work, you have to make time for it outside of work.

• We sleep less, which makes us hungry. We’re also eating more daily calories than people 50 years ago.

Add all this information up, and it becomes clear that our entire nutritional system is in need of an overhaul. It’s not as simple as eat less and workout more. It goes beyond willpower.

There are too many pitfalls out there waiting to trip us up.

Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, is “fighting against unfair property tax hikes” by pushing legislation to cap them, it continues. A concurrently running cable TV ad presses home the same message: Thillens loves tax hikes and deficit spending.

“Politicians get enough perks when they retire,” another pro-Moylan mailer states. “They shouldn’t get free health care, too.”

On the flip side, the mailer makes note of the fact that Moylan opted out of the legislative pension system and sponsored legislation

to get rid of health care for retired politicians. “Marty Moylan will fight to make sure our tax dollars are spent on our priorities, not perks for politicians.”

The Republicans have a positive piece in the mailboxes for Thillens. It points out that Thillens “helps run a multi-million-dollar family business” and explains why he wants to work “60 hours a week as a state representative.”

Um, in the age of Bruce Rauner’s $18 watch and an intense anti-Springfield mentality, the Thillens message track is decidedly different from Moylan’s. Suggesting your candidate is a millionaire and claiming he can’t wait to dive into the business

of Springfield probably isn’t a good idea.

As a result, Rep. Moylan is doing almost as well as Rauner in the 55th House District, according to a new Capitol Fax/We Ask America poll.

The poll of 334 likely voters taken Sept. 10 found Moylan was leading Mel Thillens 48 to 39. Rauner was ahead of Gov. Pat Quinn 52 to 39 in the district. The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 5.4 percent.

The early and quite expensive “independent outsider” messaging has attracted significant Republican support for Moylan. He’s getting 19 percent of self-identified Republicans, compared to Thillens’ 9 percent of Democrats.

And the two so far are splitting the conservative-leaning independent vote, which made up 46 percent of the poll’s voter sample.

That can also be seen as a sign of trouble for Moylan, however. If Republican voters “come home” and independents break more heavily against the incumbent Moylan, this thing could tighten up.

The House Democrats’ messaging obviously is designed to prevent that from happening.

Of course, this is just one poll – a “snapshot in time.”

The House Democrats say their polling shows them “in the driver’s seat” in the district and the Republicans actually liked the We Ask

America results.

But a poll taken near the beginning of the huge Democratic paid media onslaught found Rep. Moylan ahead 47 to 33, with Rauner leading 51 to 36.

That poll was done by respected national pollster Fabrizio Lee on behalf of WLS Radio talk show host Dan Proft’s political fund.

The live-caller survey of 300 likely voters was taken the week of Aug. 25 and had a margin of error of plus or minus 5.5 percent. The House Democrats much preferred those numbers, of course.

The Indians, who were missing four starters, ended their drought first, scoring in the 12th minute when Esparza placed a shot inside the far post. But the Tigers responded in the 13th minute when Haro sent a corner kick in front and Pedro Martinez headed it in.

Esparza was at it again in the 23rd minute when he got open and connected following a pass from Mason Messina.

It appeared that things might stay that way at the break; but shortly before the halftime whistle, Haro’s corner went to Kory Hayden, who then passed it to Dan Ramos, who put his attempt just inside the post.

“During halftime, our coach gave us a great speech and told us to keep pushing forward and keep the pressure on the defense – and obviously it worked, and we got the win,” Tigers senior captain Eduardo Bernal said. “I’ve been on the varsity since freshman year, and I haven’t seen a squad like this yet. Guys on this team know what they have to do to win.”

While Minooka has struggled, coach Chris Brolley is encouraged by the fact that he’ll be getting some key players back soon, which should help to improve their fortunes.

“The positives are that we started playing with more intensity, and putting the ball in the back of the net was big,” Brolley said. “Give credit to West for capitalizing on our mistakes. These are opportunities for us to get better, and we need to get better every day. If we can come together as a team, then we can put some nice things together.”

MINOOKA – Playing for the fifth time in seven days, Joliet West’s soccer team didn’t really perform the way it wanted in the first half of Monday’s nonconference match at Minooka.

But instead of using fatigue as an excuse, the Tigers picked up their performance after the break, and they captured a wild, 5-3 victory over the Indians.

West hadn’t scored in its past two matches, and Minooka had gone scoreless in three straight. But each scored a goal within the initial quarter hour, and it was 2-2 at halftime.

Things were knotted at 3 before the Tigers scored twice within a 34-second span to grab the advantage. As a result, coach Patrick Korthauer’s squad picked up its fifth win in nine outings – already one more victory than it had all last season.

“This was our fifth game in seven days against some pretty stiff competition,” Korthauer said. “In the first half, I was a little disappointed – not so much in their play but in their overall emotion. They were getting on themselves a bit, but in the second half they turned the page. I think that they were more positive with each other and were teaching each other.

“We were playing our game, the one- and two-touch combination from our stopper on up.

A lot of people are pleasantly surprised with our record except for the boys on this team, who expect to win every time that they’re on the field, and take their losses pretty hard.”

The Indians (1-8-1) looked as if they would go up, 3-2, in the 50th minute when David Esparza lined one off the crossbar. It deflected off keeper Josh Baldobinos and appeared to go in for this third score, but the goal was disallowed.

On the ensuing counterattack, Lalo Gutierrez broke free and connected to give the Tigers (5-2-2) a 3-2 lead. But Minooka answered in the 54th minute when Austin Robare

Joliet Ski Club offering healthy outdoor activities

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com JOLIET – As weather gets colder, people may start buying new winter clothes, tickets to escape the frigid temperature or they might just plan to stay inside.

But there is another fun and healthy alternative that many in this area may not even know about. Join a club.

The Joliet Ski Club could be a good option for someone who wants to stay active outdoors and have fun. This winter alone, the club scheduled weeklong trips to Nevada and Oregon, weekend trips to Minnesota and Michigan and an overnight trip to Wisconsin.

The club is hosting a meetand-greet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Knights of Columbus on Infantry Drive to highlight this year’s trips and activities.

Attendees are welcome to sign up for trips and membership applications will be available.

The club, which is celebrating its 44th year, offers annual memberships for $30. Memberships not only give skiers and snowboarders a chance to meet people with similar interests, they receive monthly

By traveling as a group, members are able to go on a ski trip for less money than they normally would spend.

The lodging, lift tickets, lessons and travel arrangements are discounted because of the group rate.

The Joliet Ski Club motto is “It’s not just skiing. Joliet Ski Club goes year-round.”

Members say that because they also participate in golf and bicycle riding during the summer and have social events throughout the year.

Not everyone can join the club since members must be at least 21 years old. However, the club is family-oriented and encourages people of all ages to register for individual trips and attend social events.

“We have a member who is 82 years old and skiing with us,” club vice president Debbie Hylek said. “It’s a sport for all ages.”

The club provides another important benefit. It is a healthy way to spend a winter.

Instead of being miserable, cooped up inside during the winter months, ski club members are staying active outside and having fun. Even at a beginner level, skiers and snowboarders can burn more than 1,000 calories a day.

Members also save time.

Instead of spending days booking and making travel arrangements for a group or family trip to a ski resort, members sign up for a trip that appeals to them. The price includes the travel, living arrangements, some meals and lift tickets.

If someone wants to go on a trip, but does not want to become a member, they can. Associate members can register for an overnight trip for $10 and a weekend trip for $20.

Anyone interested to learn more about the club can visit the website or attend the meetand-greet Thursday night at the Knights of Columbus.

STREATOR – Morris soccer finished first for the third year in a row at the Streator Cup Tournament after beating Ottawa, 1-0.

Jorge Gutierrez set up Luke Rodriguez for the lone goal against Ottawa.

By TIM TIERNEY Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – The steady drizzle that fell during the first half of Monday’s soccer game between Joliet Catholic and visiting Romeoville didn’t dampen the Hilltoppers’ spirit.

Down 2-0 midway through the second half, JCA rallied with back-to-back goals from Jared Olson and Aron Goeken – the second with less than four minutes to play – to earn a 2-2 nonconference tie.

“We just kept on chugging, knew that our opportunities would come and eventually we’d put some away,” said Goeken, who knocked in the game-tying goal amid a crowd with an assist from Colin Egan.

Joliet Catholic coach Tom Cranmer said that after the Hilltoppers “got blown out” in a couple of recent games, the team has been working to keep its focus and motivation.

“This was a good mental victory for us, to come back from two goals down,” Cranmer said. “We applied the pressure. I think we’re starting to see what it takes be in games and win games at the higher level.”

Christian Duarte scored twice for Romeoville. Spartans coach Nick Cirrincione called his junior standout “our workhorse.”

Duarte broke free down the middle to score the first goal from 20 yards out. That stood for a 1-0 halftime lead.

Duarte got loose on a breakaway early in the second half and was able to lift the ball over JCA goalie Pat Bednarz and drop it on a roll for a 2-0 advantage.

“We were a little unlucky.

We knew if we just worked a little harder, we could get back in there,” Goeken said.

Cranmer pointed to the play of defender Matt Jorgensen and midfielder Diego Guzman as key to the comeback.

“He played a nice, evenkeel game, kind of the gas pedal and the brakes,” Cranmer said of Guzman. “He was able to slow us down and get

“It was a good battle,’’ Cirrincione said. “They’ve got good quality players up top and were dangerous the whole game. It easily could have been a 10-10 game.

“It was a good team effort. We passed the ball well, moved the ball well. Everybody contributed.”

Cirrincione cited several

scoring chances from Matt Ickes and Caelan Doran.

Next for Romeoville (3-7-1) is a Southwest Prairie Conference game Sept. 23 against Plainfield North.

“We haven’t had a good practice for a while,” Cirrincione said. “We’ve had 11 games already and maybe had two practices in between.

It’s a perfect time to work on

stuff, rest up and be ready for the conference play.”

Inexperience has been an issue at times for JCA (3-7-1).

“We only have a few people who have been playing for a while,” Goeken said.

“The people who have been playing, we’re trying to use them to the best of their ability and help bring up the inexperienced people.”

No dog house for Patrick or Stenhouse

By TIM CRONIN Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – It had the makings of a lovers’ quarrel.

It was something less.

When Danica Patrick and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. collided with 10 laps to go in Sunday’s Sprint Cup race at Chicagoland Speedway, eyebrows were raised. Had someone said something to the other someone? After all, Patrick and Stenhouse have been an item for more than a year now.

In fact, someone else had failed to say something. Patrick’s spotter, Brandon Benesch, had not mentioned to Patrick that Stenhouse was in the immediate vicinity as she raced through turn 4.

“I heard my spotter say that the 14 [Tony Stewart] was below me on track and I didn’t know the 17 [Stenhouse] was there on the high side of the track,” Patrick said. “My spotter took the blame on that one.

I just didn’t know Ricky was up there and I obviously don’t

want to hit his car or anyone else with 10 laps to go.

“I talked to Ricky afterward and we’re fine. It’s just a tough deal.”

Each was able to continue.

Patrick finished 19th, Stenhouse 17th.

SURVIVE TO ADVANCE The new playoff system NASCAR concocted will eliminate the bottom four of the 16 Chase finalists after three races. There are now two remaining, New Hampshire and Dover, two short ovals, one low-banked and one highbanked.

Dale Earnhardt Jr., close to the front until the finish, when he placed 11th with a car that wasn’t nearly that good in practice either Friday or Saturday, is trying to figure out how to advance to the second round if he doesn’t win a race – the automatic method – in this first round.

“I feel like this team can run for 11th on its worst day,” Earnhardt said. “That will do it. That will get us through

[to] the next round, until we get to some tracks that maybe we can run a little better at, or tracks that suit us a little better.”

The three tracks in the second round are Kansas, which is nearly identical to Chicagoland; Charlotte, a dissimilarly-shaped 1.5-mile oval, and Talladega, the big 2.66-mile high-banked track in Alabama Aric Almirola has a different viewpoint on the next two races. That’s because he finished 41st when his engine blew with 36 laps to go. Driving for Richard Petty, he’d run as high as fifth in the laps before the detonation.

“We have to win,” Almirola said. “That is it. There is no other option. We have to go and figure out how we can win one of the next two races.”

TRUEX BATTLES BACK Martin Truex Jr. was going backward, and fast. His Chevrolet-powered car wasn’t losing places in the 43-car field so much as it was losing laps. At

one point, Truex was two laps down to the leaders.

Usually, that spells curtains for the day.

But Truex, who started 27th, soldiered on.

“The key for us was picking up two laps late in the race,” Truex said. “We stayed out as long as we could when other cars pitted under green.”

That got back one lap, at least temporarily. It became permanent when the caution flag waved. And that earned him another lap, for he was the only car one lap down, and picked up the free pass – a.k.a the “lucky dog” – to rejoin the lead lap, albeit at the back of the pack.

“I can’t recall ever picking up two laps that quickly,” Truex said. “One we got back on the lead lap, [we had] an opportunity to gain track position.”

He did, moving up eight spots in the last 42 laps to finish 14th. Aside from the leaders, Truex might have been faster than anyone at the finish.

Returning Rizzo’s walk-off homer lifts Cubs 1-0 past Reds

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Anthony Rizzo capped his return to the Cubs lineup with a walkoff home run in the ninth inning that gave the Cubs a 1-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Monday night.

Rizzo had missed the last 18 games because of a back problem but drove a pitch from Pedro Villarreal (0-1) over the wall in center field.

Rizzo’s homer was his 31st of the season and gave Hector Rondon (4-4) the win after he tossed a scoreless inning of relief.

Travis Wood didn’t get any run support and couldn’t earn his ninth win of the season despite producing one of his best outings of the year.

Wood threw six scoreless innings, allowed only three hits, and lowered his ERA to 4.86.

Cincinnati starter Alfredo Simon gave up five hits in seven innings.

Until the ninth, the Cubs didn’t do much at the plate even though they Rizzo and Jorge Soler in the lineup together for the first time.

Soler went 1 for 3 after he missed a weekend series in Pittsburgh because of the birth of a child.

Simon had been one of Cincinnati’s most pleasant first-half surprises but he had been struggling. He entered with a 2-7 record and 4.96 ERA in the second half.

Simon, who is 3-0 against

the Cubs this season, was looking for his second consecutive win but didn’t get the support needed for the victory.

He might have done so if Cubs center fielder Arismendy Alcantara didn’t run down Kristopher Negron’s drive to right-center with two outs in the eighth and speedy Billy Hamilton on first.

The Cubs loaded the bases against Simon in the first inning on two singles and a walk, but didn’t score. Welington Castillo popped out to end the inning.

Cincinnati got its first chance in the third, starting the inning with a single and a walk, but Negron flew out to right.

When television cameras captured an emotional Charles Tillman on the sidelines Sunday night, it appeared the veteran Bears cornerback knew how serious his triceps injury was.

Now, it seems the Bears do as well.

Tillman, who left Sunday night’s 28-20 win over the 49ers in the third quarter, will be placed on season-ending injury reserve with torn triceps.

Tillman tore his right triceps in Week 9 last season and did not play the remainder of the season. Tillman, who did

not speak reporters after Sunday night’s victory in Santa Clara, Calif., was to undergo an MRI on Monday.

“Bear fans and Chicago, thank you for the words of encouragement and prayers,” Tillman tweeted Sunday night.

“I really appreciate it. #Bear Down.”

On Monday afternoon, Tillman tweeted, “I know this isn’t the news we all wanted to hear but as they say, stuff happens. I’m truly blessed to have so much support from you all.”

Tillman signed a one-year deal in the offseason. He cannot be placed on injured reserve/designated to return because the Bears used that

‘She couldn’t even take another step’ Plainfield teen fights Chiari malformation, an abnormality of the skull

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – Wendy Trepac of Plainfield couldn’t believe her ears when a doctor told her that her 13-year-old daughter’s brain had begun descending out of the base of her skull.

Trepac pictured Caley Trepac’s brain dropping right out of her head. The condition had a name – Chiari malformation.

“I had never heard of it before,” Trepac said. “I went home and read everything I could. For three days, I read and read.”

Trepac had taken her daughter to the emergency room for a headache so painful that Caley couldn’t even make it through her eighthgrade field trip to Brookfield Zoo. “She told me she had to sit down,” her mother said. “She couldn’t even take another step.”

An MRI that day clearly showed Chiari.

Chiari malformation is an abnormality of the skull that creates a smaller-than-normal space for the cerebellum portion of the brain inside the skull. According to the National Institutes of Health Chiari Malformation, the cerebellum sits at the back of the brain’s base, processing input from other areas of the brain, spinal cord and sensory receptors. It provides precise timing for coordinated, smooth movements of the muscles.

As the cerebellum grows in children who have Chiari, it eventually becomes too large for the skull and pushes down into the space in the spinal cord where cerebrospinal fluid normally circulates.

About 300,000 people in the United States have Chiari malformation. In rare cases, it can be acquired as an adult, caused by a mass in the brain or excessive drainage of

Most often, it is a congenital condition present at birth and discovered in childhood.

Neurosurgeon Dr. Lorenzo Munoz, who works at Rush University Medical Center

in Chicago, specializes in craniosurgery and sees an average of two Chiari patients each week. Munoz was Caley’s surgeon.

“It’s a mismatch between the size of the tissue [the cerebellum] and the cavity where the tissue is supposed to be,” Munoz said of Chiari malfor-

mation.

Munoz said many with the condition never have any symptoms. Others experience symptoms when the cerebellum pushes against the spinal nerves, or there’s poor circulation of the cerebrospinal fluid because of the blockage.

The most common symptom is headaches, Munoz said. Other Chiari symptoms include dizziness, imbalance, choking, trouble swallowing, ringing in the ears and hearing difficulties, weakness, tingling hands, insomnia, neck pain, clumsiness, foggy thinking and poor memory.

Caley also has syringomyelia, which can be caused

by Chiari malformation, although Munoz said the exact mechanism is not understood.

In syringomyelia, a fluid-filled cyst forms within the spinal cord’s central canal, destroying the center of the spinal cord.

The result can be pain; weakness; stiffness in the back, shoulders, arms or legs; and the loss of the ability to feel extremes of hot or cold, especially in the hands.

“It may be caused by a compromise of the cerebrospinal flow,” Munoz said.

Munoz compared the condition to a cork in a bottle. The part of the cerebellum that juts into the spine is called the cerebellar tonsil, he said, and it can block the flow of the liquid around the spine.

Before her debilitating headache at the zoo, Caley had other problems. That same month, she had a terrible headache – along with blurry vision and dizziness – while in class. Caley had also experienced vertigo, ringing in the ears, balance problems and fatigue.

After consulting with surgeons, Trepac decided Caley should have surgery. In some cases, Munoz said, pain medication is enough. In others, surgery to increase room in the cranial cavity is the best

option, to prevent damage to the nerves in the brain and spinal cord.

“To give pain medications in a case like this would be like fixing a leak by mopping the floor,” Munoz said.

After surgery, Caley had to limit her physical activity to avoid changing the pressure in her skull. Surgery greatly reduced Caley’s headaches and other symptoms, but they returned this summer. So far this school year, Caley, now age 16, has only attended classes a handful of days.

Munoz said some patients develop scar tissue following surgery, which can cause symptoms. Or, he added, the headaches may have a cause unrelated to Chiari. That’s one reason Trepac is active in raising money for Chiari malformation research – including this weekend’s Conquer Chiari Walk Across America – to find better treatments.

“There is no cure now,” Trepac said. “It can continue her whole life. This condition can cause paralysis. They can die. ... I’m really hoping research will come through.”

That is an interesting list of comparisons when you contemplate the various incomes from those professions.

In this deal, though, the key word is “option.” Which option should South choose? He is in three no-trump. West leads the heart jack and East plays his seven. How should South continue?

West has a textbook weak twobid, North has a textbook takeout double, and South has a clearcut jump to three no-trump. It is just a pity that the contract isn’t laydown. South has only eight winners: four spades, one heart (trick one) and three diamonds. He has to establish a club trick, but that will involve losing the lead twice and will give the defenders a chance to run the heart suit.

If West has a high club, the contract is unmakable. So South must assume that East has the club ace and king. However, if declarer takes the first trick and immediately plays a club, East will get in and return his second heart. Then South will go down three, losing five hearts and two clubs.

South has another option at trick one: Let West take the trick.

Now the contract makes; declarer will lose only two hearts and two clubs.

You will often have two options at the bridge table, whether in the bidding or play. Analyze both and hopefully you will realize that one is better than the other.

Simple measures combat low blood pressure Dear Doctor K: Recently, my blood pressure has been low. I feel tired and dizzy. What could be causing this and what can I do?

Dear Reader: Low blood pressure is not considered a problem unless, as in your case, it causes symptoms. In fact, if it is not causing symptoms, low blood pressure can be a good thing.

The typical symptoms caused by low blood pressure include weakness and dizziness, which can increase your risk of fainting and falling. If a person who did not previously have low blood pressure develops it, and has weakness and dizziness, he or she could be developing a heart problem.

I’m assuming your doctor has checked you out and has not found any heart problem. So let’s discuss other possible causes of low blood pressure, and what you can do to feel better.

A common cause of low blood pressure is overtreatment of high blood pressure. A person’s blood pressure can vary a lot, day to day and week to week. Particularly when someone is relaxing, the “usual dose” of medicine may cause too much of a drop in blood pressure.

Some other types of commonly prescribed medications also cause blood pressure to drop too low.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff Alpha blockers (used for prostate problems, and also for high blood pressure), antihistamines and tricyclic antidepressants are all possible culprits. Your doctor can determine if any of your medications may be affecting your blood pressure.

Dehydration can also cause low blood pressure. You might not feel thirsty, but you could still be dehydrated.

Another possible cause is postural, or orthostatic, hypotension.

In this condition, blood pressure falls dramatically when you stand.

Here are some things you can do to counter low blood pressure: • Take your time standing up.

Move gradually from lying down to sitting to standing.

• Wiggling your toes and flexing your feet before you stand up can help improve blood pressure. So can temporarily squatting and stooping forward. These maneuvers can improve your pressure because they push blood that’s pooled in your legs back up to the

heart. As a result, the heart has more blood to pump to the brain.

Once you’re standing, crossing and tensing your legs may improve blood flow, for the same reason.

• Review your medications with your doctor and perhaps make a change. Your doctor may be able to substitute a different drug for one that is affecting your blood pressure.

• Increase your fluid intake.

When you don’t drink enough fluid, the volume of blood decreases and blood pressure may drop.

• Consider increasing your salt intake. This may help prevent fluid loss and increase blood volume.

But check with your doctor before you decide to try this.

• Drink coffee. Caffeine boosts blood pressure.

• Exercise more. Orthostatic hypotension sometimes goes away when people improve their cardiovascular fitness.

In most cases, low blood pressure with bothersome symptoms will respond to these simple measures.

It’s hard to please everyone Dr. Wallace: I’m 19, and so is my husband, and we have a 3-monthold daughter. We’re happily married and thrilled to be parents.

He works in construction for his brother’s company. He’s a very hard worker and earns a good salary, so I don’t have to be employed, and that allows me to be a full-time mother.

I like that, and so do my parents and my husband.

My husband works 10 hours a day, six days a week. On Sundays, we go to church in the morning and just stay at home the rest of the day relaxing and enjoying our daughter. But this makes my mother mad because she thinks we should be spending time at her house. She also thinks we’re trying to avoid her and being anti-family.

We live about 30 miles from my parents, and at least once a month we spend a Sunday evening at their house and we do the same for his parents.

But my mother doesn’t think that’s enough.

Your husband and daughter are now the members of the prime family in your life, and your first responsibility is to them. Your extended family, especially your parents, remains important, of course, but your relationship with them has changed.

I don’t see how this is possible because she looks normal, not skinny. In fact, I’ve seen her eat junk food. I think my aunt is just making this up because her daughter has been in a lot of trouble and saying that she’s bulimic is a way of excusing her behavior. Please tell me my cousin couldn’t be bulimic. – Sheila, New York City, New York Dear Sheila: It’s possible your cousin is bulimic. You’re confusing bulimia with anorexia, which is another serious eating disorder. Anorexia is defined as voluntary starvation resulting in a minimum weight loss of 15 percent. Bulimics, on the other hand, will habitually gorge themselves, and then induce vomiting to eliminate the food. While anorexics become emaciated, bulimics usually maintain a normal weight or are even a tad heavier.

Fans of young-looking actor Justin Long will have no problem recognizing him during the first half of Kevin Smith’s new horror-comedy “Tusk.”

Well, they might be caught off-guard by the big bushy mustache he’s sporting in the film. But the voice and eyes and manner of speech that he’s shown off in “Galaxy Quest” and “Live Free or Die Hard,” among many others, have made him a familiar and likable film personality. But there might be some difficulty recognizing him – except for those eyes – in the second half, after a mad scientist (Michael Parks) has turned him into a walrus.

Just remember that term “horror-comedy.” The enthusiastic Long, 36, now mustache-free, shared some thoughts about Smith and his film last week at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Ed Symkus: The rumor is that Kevin Smith sent you an email offering you the part.

Justin Long: Yeah, that was a little over a year ago now.

I didn’t know anything about the back story. I hadn’t been listening to the podcast that explained the origins of it. Kevin smokes and does these podcasts, and they bring up stories that they find interesting.

One of which was this ad that was taken out in the British version of what would be Craigslist that’s called Gumtree.

The posting said it was looking for a lodger to come stay, free room and board, and all they had to do was dress up as a walrus for two hours during the day. The back story was that this guy was an old adventurer who had been lost at sea, and at one point was kept company by this walrus that was bobbing around his craft, and he felt throughout his life he

Justin Long stars in Kevin Smith’s new horror-comedy “Tusk.” had never formed as deep a connection with a human being as he had with this walrus. He thought he was facing death, so it galvanized this feeling.

It turned out to be a hoax, but it piqued Kevin’s curiosity when he still thought it was true, so much so that he started writing the script. He said in the email that he conceived it as Hammer horror movie, and I love all that stuff, like “human lizard man.”

Now the best way to preface anything with an actor is flattery, and I was flattered by the email, and just by the fact that he would want me to do it.

Symkus: You’ve worked with Kevin on a couple of movies. Do you know him very well?

Long: Not really. I loved working with him, but I’d only done two days on [his film] “Zack and Miri,” and he did only a couple days [acting] on “Die Hard.” But he was very collaborative on this film.

After I read the script, I went over to his house.

There was a little reticence in the idea of giving

somebody like Kevin Smith notes, or ideas that differ from what’s in the script.

But he is the most collaborative, flexible, open-minded guy I’ve ever worked with.

Symkus: It’s a really strange role in an even stranger movie. Were you at all nervous about taking the part?

Long: Oh, yes, absolutely.

I knew I was going to do it because I wanted to work with Kevin, and I got to the point in my career where having fun with these movies became the most important thing.

I found myself taking jobs just because I love to work. My mom was an actress, and I grew up with the mentality that actors go where the jobs are. [An actor friend] said that actors are carnies and they go where the tents are. I think, maybe to my detriment, I followed that.

But then I started weighing jobs a little bit more.

And fun has become the No. 1 criteria.

Symkus: Has any acting training you’ve had prepared you to do a role like this?

Long: For the beginning part of it, I thought a lot about guys who are great storytellers, and Vince Vaughn kept coming to mind because he loves telling stories. But toward the end, with the animal stuff ... . You know, there’s a lot of acting classes.

Like in the Acting 101 intro classes, there’s a lot of animal work – “Be an animal. You’re a monkey, you’re this, you’re that.”

It reminded me a little bit of that, just a basic connecting with the primal part of yourself. Doing that was weirdly liberating.

But squeezing into that claustrophobic suit, and then four hours of makeup, wasn’t fun.

But once I got in there, and I had the tusks on, my job was to just connect to that. I have to become an animal, that’s where the character goes.

I remember one day, my girlfriend and my dog came to the set, and my dog freaked out when he saw it.

My poor dog. What a jerk I am. (Laughs.)
