Windmills of various designs and shapes have been known for many centuries around the world, principally for lifting water out of the ground and grinding grains.

Immigrants to the New World brought Dutch-style and other windmill designs as early as the 17th century.

These early designs actually were buildings that were part of the milling process, and required the care and maintenance of a full-time miller. In many New England areas, it was more common to find water-powered mills, given the regions topography and relatively wet climate.

By the mid-19th century, western expansion created the need for an improved method to pump water in the drier, flatter and more remote areas found in the western states and territories.

The traditional wind pump was mounted on a post or a truss tower. The pump was driven directly by an axle that was made to rotate by the wind.

In the beginning, both the towers and the rotor blades were made of wood and only the axle and some other mechanical parts were made of iron or steel.

Often, the wind pumps were installed near the farmhouse, as they had to be oiled and greased regularly, and when the winds increased, the pumps had to be turned out of the wind and a break had to be applied manually. These types of wind pumps needed constant surveillance.

Daniel Halladay, a machinist, inventor and businessman, patented the first commercially viable windmill, known as Halladay’s Self-Governing Windmill, in 1854. Halladay had been approached by John Burnham, a local businessman, to develop a pump that could bring water to the surface.

Halladay’s patented design was revolutionary, as it allowed the windmill to automatically turn to face changing wind directions, and it regulated and maintained uniform speed by changing the pitch of the sails.

The model had four twistable motor blades and when the wind speed increased, the force of the wind twisted the blades so that some of the wind passed through the rotor. All this could be done without human oversight. This self-regulating

wind engine would inspire the development of many windmill companies around the country.

By the end of the 19th century, there were more than 75 companies that manufactured these types of wind turbines in the United States. At the same time, technical development on the wind turbine continued.

Locally, the Leach Windmill Company was established in 1871, the same year Leander Leach patented his first model known as “Leach’s Windmill.”

He began manufacturing and selling his steel blade windmill units in Wilmington, Illinois.

Leach was known to only manufacture his own windmill inventions, but also manufactured earth augers and other well-boring machinery.

In 1874, the Leach Windmill Company moved to Joliet and occupied three stores of a building that was located just

south of town along a parcel of river land developed by local businessman John E. Bush, and known locally as the River Block. The River Block, located at 714 South Center St., was home over the years to such business as the Robertson Barn Door Hanger Company, the Illinois Check-Bower Company and the Bates Machine Company.

When the entire River Block was destroyed by fire in 1908, Leach built a new factory building shown in the then photograph. The Leach Windmill Company, later known as the Leach Windmill and Tank Company, continued to operate from this location and sold his patented products throughout the country well into the early decades of the 20th century.

World War II comes to Lockport via park district event

By ALLISON SELK Shaw Media correspondent LOCKPORT – The American Army hid in the brush along a creek when surprise gunfire by German soldiers created a back-and-forth battle – and instantly took the lives of three American soldiers.

The Germans yelled back to the Americans and approached their site, only to heckle and take a prisoner as they retreated downstream.

The Americans had the last say, as they tossed a grenade at the Germans, ending the fight.

Dellwood Park in Lockport came alive with culture Saturday and Sunday at the fifth World War II Days. The park was overrun with tents, tanks and re-enactors portraying soldiers from Britain, Japan, Poland, Germany, America and more.

Soldiers were eating Polish and Austrian food, jeeps drove around while troops marched over bridges as they searched for the enemy and music played and people danced in the amphitheatre, all while revelers intermingled, soaking in the atmosphere of that time period.

Having fathers who fought in World War II, Sue and John Doyle of Joliet drove out to the park Saturday for the first time to check out the day’s events.

The couple spent most of the day watching battles, milling around the various campsites and listening to the music of the Andrews Sisters Musical Revue by the Legacy Girls.

“Just the effort, equipment and coordination of it all made the battles cool to watch. We also walked around the camps, and all of the people were helpful explaining what they had at their site,” John Doyle said.

Hotel developer needs more incentives to cover union labor costs

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The potential developer of a Joliet hotel-conference center wants more tax incentives, saying the project otherwise is too expensive to build with all-union labor like the city wants.

The project slated for a Houbolt Road site near Interstate 80 has been stalled since the city two years ago approved a tax incentive package worth up to $3 million.

Its future may become more clear in the coming weeks. The city plans to review an analyst’s report on what tax incentives are needed to build the hotel at a City Council committee meeting before the end of September.

The Hospitality Guru Group in Aurora has proposed building two hotels, totaling 200 rooms, connected to a conference center, restaurant and fitness center. At one point, construction was to start in the summer of 2014 with the complex opening this year.

But work has not begun, and city officials have been

meeting with Guru developers who want to increase the incentive package or relax the union labor requirements that came with the tax breaks.

Sejal Patel, a partner with Hospitality Guru, said Friday that the company wants more incentives because of the costs associated with using all-union labor for the project.

“We’re still negotiating with the city, but the union costs are higher than expected,” Patel said. “The city is pushing to use all union. It’s not feasible at those costs.”

Patel said the labor costs were not known when Hospitality Guru negotiated the incentive package with the city.

Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said he would not agree to more incentives or relaxing the union requirements in the incentive agreement.

“They’ve come to us a couple of times looking for more,” O’Dekirk said.

“We’ve pretty much held the line on what we’re going to do. I think it was a pretty generous agreement to begin with.”

The tax package in 2013

stirred some concerns among hotel and restaurant operators that faced new competition from the project.

The owners of the longtime Holiday Inn on Larkin Avenue, which also has a conference center, switched to the Clarion brand as Holiday Inn planned to put its name on the new hotel on Houbolt.

But the conference center was seen as an attractive addition to Joliet because it could bring in more business meetings and conventions.

City Manager Jim Hock said the city hired SB Friedman, a development consultant, to review the incentive package in place. Hock said SB Friedman’s report will be reviewed at a meeting of the Joliet City Council Economic Development Committee sometime before the end of September.

Patel said he saw the report, and, “In that study, it did say more incentives are needed.”

Meanwhile, Patel plans to come to the City Council meeting Tuesday. The Guru Hospitality project is not on the agenda, but Patel said he will be there in case the council “has any questions.”

Troy math teacher to compete on ‘Wheel of Fortune’

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com TROY TOWNSHIP – A self-professed logic puzzle whiz, Ashley Fisher will make her TV debut Monday night on ABC’s “Wheel of Fortune.”

Fisher, a sixth-grade math teacher with Troy School District 30-C, said she is excited to appear on the popular TV game show’s first episode of its 33rd season, which airs 6:30 p.m. Monday.

“I grew up watching the show. It’s a perfect dinner show. I’m a huge fan of game shows in general,” Fisher said.

Fisher said the producers finally selected her as a contestant on the show after the 28-year-old Troy School District teacher unsuccessfully tried out two other times since 2010.

“Having tried out before, I knew what they were looking for,” Fisher said.

She taped the show in July, she said, though she got the call in November for a December taping. It was at that time that Fisher asked to postpone because her mother recently had been diagnosed with and was undergoing chemotherapy treatment for pancreatic cancer.

Her love for the show is no secret to students at William B. Orenic Intermediate School.

“I feel like most of my students know how often I’ve tried to get on this show,” Fisher said.

Arborists to do tree duty at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – Local arborists and horticulturalists will spruce up Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery next week as part of a volunteer project at the nation’s veterans cemeteries.

Arborists at 27 national cemeteries will provide tree

care in the debut of Saluting Branches: Arborists United for Veteran Remembrance.

The focus at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery will be removing dead trees and planting new ones, said Jim Teiber, the Joliet city arborist and site leader at the Elwood cemetery.

“There are a lot of dead ash trees that need to come down,”

Teiber said, noting the impact of the emerald ash borer infestation that has forced the removal of ash trees throughout the Midwest.

Teiber said he was impressed with the response to the program. Nurseries are donating trees and two companies are providing tree removal services. About 15 to 20 trees will be planted at the cemetery.

There has been high enthusiasm for the project on a national scale according to Julie Gann, a spokeswoman for Saluting Branches.

“The response has been overwhelming,” she said.

About 1,000 volunteers are participating at 27 national cemeteries, Gann said.

Projects vary by cemeteries, and work includes prun-

ing and tree care as well as tree removal and planting, she said.

The program was organized by Rainbow Treecare in Minnetonka, Minnesota.

Gann said the company saw the need for the tree services three years ago after doing volunteer work at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.

Troy starts school year with new technology initiatives More online

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – The new “idea lab” at Shorewood Elementary School is all about connecting technology with what students are learning.

The converted computer lab differs from the average school technology setting. The largely open space is equipped with 10 iPads, 14 Google Chrome boxes, a large flat-screen TV for projections and a green screen for video projects.

“It’s a new age, 21st century computer lab,” Principal Julie Mancione said. “The kids are coming with knowledge. So this makes them comfortable and motivated, and it broadens their world so much.”

The lab, as well as new national learning standards, are part of a greater focus on science and technology at Troy School District 30-C. “We want to be out in front of technology for the kids,” Superintendent Todd Koehl said.

“They’re tech natives. We’re pushed by them.”

Even though it’s not yet required, the district this school year started implementing nationwide Next Generation Science Standards into the curriculum of William B. Orenic Intermediate and Troy Middle schools.

The standards aim to increase interest in science by focusing on four areas: earth and space science, life science,

physical science and engineering and technology, Director of Curriculum Daniela Fountain said.

“In the past, we would dig deeply into content and text,” Fountain said. “Now we’re working more through practices rather than memorizing content. They’re asking questions and defining, planning and carrying out an investigation.”

For example, when learning about solids, liquids and gases, instead of just reading about them the students go through experiments to see how the states of matter affect the world.

Fountain said the standards still are being discussed by a science committee to determine how to implement them.

“We’re thinking about where students will be five to six years from now,” she said.

“They’re thinking product-, outcome- and solution-based rather than just consuming information.”

Sewer improvements to start Wednesday

Man killed in Joliet

JOLIET – A 22-year-old Joliet man was killed in what the Will County Coroner’s Office said is being investigated as an apparent homicide.

David M. Kelly, 22, of Joliet was pronounced dead at 5:50 a.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of Englewood Avenue in Joliet, according to the coroner’s office.

Joliet Police are investigating the incident as an apparent homicide, according to the coroner’s office. Final cause of death will be determined pending the outcome of the investigation, autopsy and toxicology reports.

These days, more and more men are embracing the manscaping trend.

And while some are opting to have their chest hairs waxed, Kathe Malinowski, lead esthetician and marketing manager for Eterna MedSpa & Laser Vein Center, said the back area is more of a focus.

“I do have a lot of men who wax their chests but the back area is a bigger concern for them,” she said.

Why are men ditching the razors in their grooming regimen?

“First and foremost, waxing lasts longer than shaving because the hair follicle is being pulled out,” Malinowski said. “When you shave it is only at the surface.”

Another perk: smoother skin. Shaving can cause razor rash or even folliculitis, a skin condition in which hair follicles become inflamed.

What’s the pain factor?

“Let’s just say it’s not the most pleasant thing they have had done,” Malinowski said.

But there is good news.

“Actually, the more you wax the more you just get used to it,” Malinowski said.

And the hair that grows back after a waxing tends to be softer.

To ease the unpleasantness of the waxing procedure, men can use a product such as Lidocaine.

“They can spray it on 15 minutes before they come in to numb themselves up,” Malinowski said.

For back and chest waxing, men should have at least a half-inch of hair, the hair has to be at least a half an inch long in order for the wax to adhere to the hair.

After the procedure, aloe can be applied to reduce any irritation. If men are going to be out in the sun, Malinowski recommends lotion with SPF.

PLAINFIELD – Anyone can learn how to take care of a snowblower, plan a Disney trip on the dime and add a water feature to the backyard in one day during Plainfield’s first How-To Fair scheduled for Oct. 3 and 4.

Limited spots are filling up fast for the fair, which will feature 50 free workshops on skills that are useful for residents’ needs and curiosities.

Other classes include how to make your own craft beer, create color flow through your home, identify birds and give a good massage.

The library is co-hosting the fair along with the village of Plainfield and Plainfield Township Park District. Classes will take place in the library at 15025 S. Illinois St., Village

brary Director Julie Milavec noted that several classes have already been sold out, including how to knit for beginners, use the cloud, make fun fall desserts and Halloween treats, and build your own website.

Organizer Amy De Boni, communications director for the village, said a survey was sent out to residents in the spring asking what type of things they would like to learn from a how-to fair.

“Several things came up, including home renovation, exercise and landscaping,” she said. “We just tried to answer that.”

De Boni also commended several businesses that are lending bits of their expertise for the workshops.

“We found topics that are popular, but also topics the public would be interested in,” De Boni said.

Pop Tab Dump Day has new leader VIEWS Kris Stadalsky Brayden Caraynoff, who turned 11 Monday, has been waiting for several years to take over the reins of Pop Tab Dump Day from his brother, Alex Caraynoff.

On Sept. 19, Brayden will finally get the opportunity to run the show.

Alex began his quest to collect, recycle and donate the income from pop tabs as a freshman in high school. And while Brayden may be a bit younger, he’s got the drive to get the job done, according to his mom, Kelly Caraynoff.

Alex is off to Penn State this year to study forensic science.

Brayden not only intends to pick up where Alex left off – he wants to exceed his big brother’s goals.

“I’m going to try and make it bigger and better,” Brayden said “I want to make [Alex] a legend of Ronald McDonald House.”

Alex started the fundraiser after his older sister, Kaitlyn Caraynoff, had a brain injury at 10 years old in a bicycle accident. As she underwent numerous surgeries all over the country, the family stayed at Ronald McDonald Houses.

Since 2011, Pop Tab Dump Day has recycled almost 15 tons of pop tabs, and each year the event gets a little bigger, said Kelly.

Brayden is excited to be in charge on his very first Dump Day, although he has been involved in the project for many years.

“He’s been dragged to Pop Tab Dump Day since he was little,” Kelly said.

While it traditionally has been held at Lions Park in Minooka, this year the event will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Kidz Korner Early Learning Center, 25850 W. Eames St.

(Route 6) in Channahon.

Rexam, a global beverage can maker, sponsors the event and Sims Metal Management, the recycler, matches the pop tabs’ value dollar for dollar.

Right now, aluminum is valued at 50 cents a pound; but the actual proceeds will depend on the market value on the day of the event.

The money raised at Pop Tab Dump Day helps to subsidize the cost of staying at Ronald McDonald Houses for those who cannot afford it.

Alex has been a great role model for not only his younger brother, but for others, as well.

He has been awarded the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards Certificate of Excellence for his volunteer service multiple times.

Brayden seems to have what it takes to follow in his brother’s footsteps. Pop Tab Dump Day has been one of the best days of his life and raising money for Ronald McDonald House Charities will help make it one of the best days of someone else’s life, he said.

Brayden likes knowing he’s helping others, he gets a really good feeling inside when he does.

“I get that feeling a lot,” he said. “Actually, every single year at Pop Tab Dump Day.”

Joliet man personified the values he cherished

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Aleta Finney of Joliet recalled the old car her father Gene Finney bought her mother Barbara so she could transport her children to school – green on the outside, mustard upholstery on the inside.

The vehicle didn’t seem like much, but during the big snowstorm of 1967, Gene put a piece of wood on the front of that “stupid ugly car,” and plowed the roads in the neighborhood.

Gene then went door-to-door, asking people what they needed from the grocery store.

That car, Aleta said, took Gene to the store and back, and he didn’t want a dime for his trouble because Gene always maintained that he had everything he needed. He was, Aleta said, a simple man with extraordinary values, a man of few words who taught by example, expected the best from others and didn’t tolerate bad behavior.

“I don’t believe my dad had an enemy in the world,” Aleta said.

Gene Finney of Joliet was rarely seen without a cap. hours and her children were small, Gene finished her basement and regularly mowed the grass. To Aleta, Gene personified stability, dependability, unconditional love and unwavering support.

“He might challenge me,” Aleta said, “but even if he was upset with me, he never stopped believing in me.”

Gene lived his entire life in the Joliet home where he was born. He and his twin brother, Jack, were the youngest two of the six children. Gene’s father, James Polson, was a railroad engineer and often away from home, Aleta said.

James died the night before Gene’s marriage, so Gene added an apartment to the family home. He and Barbara moved in to help care for his mother, Ester Polson.

Eventually, one of Gene’s sisters came home, too, along with her daughter, Betty Rostan of Joliet, and Gene didn’t think twice about it.

“That’s just what you did,” Aleta said, referring to Gene’s commitment to caring for family.

Betty praised Gene’s tireless devotion to his family and friends.

“If he had come home from work and someone called him and said, ‘I need you. Can you help me?’ He’d go,” Betty said.

“He was just a person that cared about everybody.”

Gene’s quiet integrity followed him to work. Brent Finney of Plainfield, Gene’s son, called Gene “an incredible craftsman.” Gene retired from Homes by Holmes in Morris after 38 years of dedicated service.

“There weren’t too many people that could hold his hammer,” Brent said. “He pretty much did it all. … I had the honor – and sometimes the

not-so-good honor – of working with him growing up. My dad was the kind of guy where you did it right or you didn’t do it at all. He worked hard. That was the way of life for him. His way of relaxing was to go into the garage and build something.”

Bill Holmes, owner of Homes by Holmes in Morris, said he apprenticed under Gene before starting his company and hiring Gene to work for him. Bill praised Gene’s carpentry abilities as well as

his friendly personality.

“He was just a good hard-working man,” Bill said.

Gene was 85 when he died April 16. Aleta and Brent both credit their father for molding the good in them.

“I think if everybody had the dad I had,” Brent said, “the world would be a better place.”

U of I emails highlight medical school struggle

By DAVID MERCER The Associated Press CHAMPAIGN – Before the University of Illinois decided to create a new engineering-based medical school at the Urbana-Champaign campus, the power players behind the idea maneuvered to line up political support while they fought off attempts to kill the idea from within.

They did much of their talking via private email accounts they believed shielded them from public scrutiny, a discovery that the school acknowledged in August, just after Chancellor Phyllis Wise abruptly resigned amid that and other problems.

“We are doing virtually nothing over our Illinois email addresses. I am even being careful with this email address and deleting after sending,” Wise wrote in one email.

But the release of those

emails provides a closer look into how Wise and her allies pushed through the plan despite opposition from the Chicago campus, the university system that oversees the three campuses and apparently, from Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.

The emails also point to the key factor that helped brush aside that opposition – the election of a new governor.

Along the way, Wise and others involved in the medical school effort frequently lavish praise on one another.

“Dear, dear friend. What an amazing email from a more amazing person,” Wise writes in March 2014 to Paul Umbach, a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, consultant hired to help win approval for the medical school.

But those involved in the discussions also are sometimes frank in their assessments of their opposition,

including Christopher Kennedy, or CK, who was then the chairman of the university’s board of trustees.

Writing about an exchange with former trustee Devon Bruce, Wise wrote to a colleague, “he gave me an earful about how no one respects CK.” The medical school proposal was the most significant project of Wise’s almost four years as chancellor. The idea is intended to wed the Urbana-Champaign campus’ renowned engineering programs with medicine in partnership with the local Carle Foundation hospital. The hospital also will contribute $100 million.

But the Chicago campus already has a medical school, and it eventually produced a competing proposal to create its own engineering-based program.

In March 2014, Wise wrote

to Rick Stephens, a Champaign-area business owner who backed her idea, about her frustration over a warning from Kennedy that Emanuel, also the former chief of staff for President Barack Obama, opposed the plan.

“I almost feel like we’re going up against the President of the United States because Kennedy and Immanuel [sic] are together on this, and Immanuel has the President’s personal cell number and Chicago is high on his list too,” Stephens wrote back.

“Chris doesn’t know me well enough to know that when someone tells me that I ‘can’t do something’ it just makes me work harder to prove them wrong,” Wise replied.

Wise, in fact, wrote that she feared Kennedy would find out about people she was already trying to line up for support, among them then-

A recurring theme over the coming months would be the divide between the campuses.

Nick Burbules, an Urbana-Champaign education policy professor and leader in faculty politics, wrote in an August 2014 email to then-Provost Ilesanmi Adesida and others that an engineering-based program in Chicago just wouldn’t be the same.

He wrote that a “star” faculty member in Urbana-Champaign once noted that his cutting-edge colleagues were at Stanford and MIT, not in Chicago.

Bodies found in suburban Chicago garage identified

CHICAGO – Authorities said three of the four bodies found in varying stages of decomposition in the garage of a suburban Chicago home have been identified, as have the ashes of a fifth person.

The Cook County medical examiner on Friday identified the remains as 50-year-old Bridgette Godfrey, who died 2013; 62-yearold Ruby Jackson, who died in 2013; and 38-year-old Torrence Henderson, 38, who died in 2011.

The ashes were that of 44-yearold Andre D. Mabrey, who died in 2013.

The remains were found in the garage of the Riverdale home of Anton Godfrey, who died in August.

Authorities said Godfrey was the subject of multiple court orders to cease in-home mortuary practices.

Records show the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation fined Godfrey $10,000 in August 2013 for operating as a funeral director and embalmer without a license.

Illinois lawmaker seeks to restore death penalty

SPRINGFIELD – A lawmaker from southwestern Illinois is pushing to restore the death penalty in certain cases, including when police officers are killed.

Alton Democratic state Senator Bill Haine said he plans to file a bill in the coming legislative session that would bring back capital punishment after it was formally abolished in 2011.

No inmates have been executed in Illinois since former Republican Governor George Ryan commuted the death sentences of all death row prisoners in 2000.

Arrest warrant in shooting outside Jacksonville police HQ

JACKSONVILLE – Authorities in the central Illinois city of Jacksonville have issued an arrest warrant for a man suspected of shooting his former son-in-law to death in a parking lot outside police headquarters.

The Jacksonville Journal Courier reported the suspect is 61-yearold Robert H. Gill of Jacksonville.

Police have said they will arrest Gill when he is discharged from a Springfield hospital where he’s being treated after he crashed his pickup truck Friday.

Morgan County Sheriff Randy Duvendack said Gill is the former father-in-law of 36-year-old Andrew Maul of rural Jacksonville.

Maul was found dead Friday in the driver’s seat of his pickup truck in the parking lot of the Jacksonville Municipal Building.

Authorities also are looking into a suspicious fire Friday evening at the home of Maul’s mother.

Ex-cop charged with threatening investigators

CHICAGO – A retired Chicago police officer is charged with threatening to harm a coroner and other officials who are investigating the fatal shooting of a northern Illinois officer unless they categorized that death a suicide, authorities said Sunday.

Joseph A. Battaglia, 54, was

arrested at his suburban Chicago home on Saturday on two counts of felony disorderly conduct and remains behind bars at the Lake County Jail on $100,000 bond, Lake County Sheriff’s Office said.

The Oak Lawn man is due in court again Tuesday.

The Sept. 1 shooting death of Fox Lake Police Lt. Charles Joseph Gliniewicz prompted a massive manhunt for potential suspects. But the county coroner, Dr. Thomas Rudd, said last week that he couldn’t rule the death a homicide, an accident or suicide.

Gliniewicz, a 30-year police veteran who was nearing retirement,

radioed he was chasing three suspects before the shooting, but no suspects have been arrested.

Battaglia allegedly threatened Rudd and his staff and task-force investigators in a telephone call Friday. In a statement announcing the allegations Sunday, the sheriff’s department didn’t offer other details, including Battaglia’s possible motive.

Lake County Undersheriff Raymond Rose said in Sunday’s statement that “any intentional criminal acts to distract or impair our investigation will be actively investigated” and turned over to prosecutors.

U of I vet college promises changes after cow deaths

CHAMPAIGN – The University of Illinois is promising changes at its college of veterinary medicine after a federal inspection found violations related to the deaths of five cows. The review by the U.S. Department of Agriculture found there weren’t enough qualified personnel monitoring the animals during and after surgery and that the surgery was not performed in the proper location.

The agency also said students participating in the operations did not follow proper protocol.

Five cows developed complications after surgery. One died and the other four were euthanized.

The Champaign News-Gazette reported no one has been disciplined. But the college said it will have more faculty supervising students performing surgeries.

It said it also will provide better training, improve the monitoring of animals and use dedicated surgical rooms.

By CHRISTINE ARMARIO and LISA LEFF The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – When a new school year began at the Sierra Sands Unified district 150 miles north of Los Angeles in August, students in four classes were greeted by a substitute.

The small district’s human resources department had worked aggressively through the summer to attract new teachers. Staff members made out-of-state recruiting trips, highlighting their area’s low cost of living and proximity to Los Angeles. The district revamped its website and asked residents to tap their families and friends for job candidates.

“We were leaving no stone unturned,” said Dave Ostash, assistant superintendent of human resources of the 5,000-student district.

Still, when the bell rang on the first day of class, they fell four teachers short.

After years of recession-related layoffs and hiring freezes, school systems in pockets across the United States are in urgent need of more qualified teachers.

Shortages have surfaced in big cities such as Tampa, Florida, and Las Vegas, where billboards calling for new teachers dot the highways, as well as in states such as Georgia, Indiana and North Dakota that have long struggled to compete for education graduates.

“When you are 1,000 teachers short, you have to think about how that affects our children,” said Oklahoma’s superintendent of public instruction, Joy Hofmeister.

The Republican has lobbied state lawmakers to raise salaries and reduce testing in a bid to make the profession more attractive. “We are talking about 25,000 to 30,000 kids without a permanent teacher.”

“There was a point where we were, frankly, overproducing teachers. Now, if you look at the most recent year, we are not producing enough,” said Joshua Speaks, a legislative representative at the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

School administrators and academic researchers point to a variety of reasons for the shortages.

During the recession years, many districts shed jobs, and those that were hiring had a plenty of applications from laid-off teachers, new graduates and professionals looking for work outside their field. Now, as school district budgets recover, they are recruiting from a smaller pool of freshly minted educators, many of whom are considering multiple job offers.

“Two or three years ago, you got 300 applications for

every job,” said Donna Glassman-Sommer, a public school administrator who runs a new teacher development and hiring program. “Now, it’s kind of like I’ve never seen.

It’s the start of the school year, and they have six or 10 openings in a mid-sized school district.”

Compounding the problem, she said, veteran teachers are being taken out of the classroom and moved to specialized roles as districts work to put in place changes associated with the Common Core academic standards and a new school funding formula that directs more money to schools with the most disadvantaged students.

Debate over testing, accountability and revamping the nation’s lowest performing schools has invariably circled back to teachers.

Nationwide, the number of students training to be teachers has declined from 719,081 in 2010 to 499,800 in 2014, U.S. Education Department data show. Even districts that were able to meet their needs this year are bracing for a projected shortage ahead.

Three days before the next Republican presidential debate, signs abound that some rivals of billionaire developer Donald Trump are taking direct aim at his decisive lead with attacks on his divisive rhetoric and vague policy.

“There will probably be more elbows thrown at that debate,” Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

The field would narrow, he added: “There’s not enough hard cash to go around to pay campaigns in these states in order to keep 17 candidates alive.”

From the campaign to cable TV, some of Trump’s rivals are testing ways to hobble his bid, since the mogul’s own bombast and lack of policy details have not.

“Someone has to bring him down,” Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul told The Associated Press last week. “I’m not going to sit quietly by and let the disaster

For all of the GOP hopefuls, the CNN debate on Wednesday at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif., is the last chance for several weeks to claim the national spotlight.

Trump’s campaign, meanwhile, is soaring past uproars that would have sunk other candidates. His national poll numbers have risen to rival leading Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton.

On Friday, former Texas Gov. Rick Perry, the leading anti-Trump voice among the GOP contenders, became the first candidate to drop his troubled bid for the nomination.

And among Republicans, still-early surveys suggested that the reality TV star has more support than Bush, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio combined. In second place: retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, who repeatedly has refused to criticize Trump in recent days.

Ohio Gov. John Kasich also declined to take on Trump.

During an appearance on “Fox News Sunday,” Kasich said he’d rather spend his time introducing himself to voters who aren’t familiar with him.

Trump is showing signs that he’s aware of the growing target on his back. On the eve of Wednesday’s debate, Trump is expected to deliver an address on national security and veterans’ issues.

Walking down the rocky path after battle, dressed in her Women’s Army Corp attire, Melissa Lenczewski of DeKalb sat under the tent and shared drinks and broke bread with the American, British and Polish soldiers.

“All we need is a German to join the party,” she said.

Lenczewski began re-enacting to educate people about women’s roles in World War II. “There were 250,000 women volunteers in the Army to keep the Army forward, and people don’t hear their stories.

Women did paperwork, fixed tanks, mail delivery, worked the phones and so on,” Lenczewski said. “Women did everything that needed to be done besides carry a gun and fight.”

The weekend came to a close after one last battle Sunday and slowly everyone left the park, leaving another year of stories and history behind.

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush have almost the same problems at inside linebacker as the Bears, the difference of course being they have Clay Matthews.

What the Bears showed Sunday is there are a number of other games on the schedule that many had already put in the loss column that suddenly look like they could be competitive.

The biggest reason could be the play of Jay Cutler.

Yes, Cutler threw an interception to Matthews with 3:55 to play that effectively ended the Bears’ chances to win, but he didn’t cost his team the game.

In fact, Cutler seemed to execute Adam Gase’s new offense extremely well and was more the reason the Bears were in the game than the reason they lost it.

He would have had to be perfect for the Bears to win this one.

Bushrod said he thought Cutler “did a tremendous job of managing our game, getting us in the right position, making the right calls and protecting the ball for us.”

“We fought and competed, and that’s all we can ask for.”

Actually, Bears fans can and will ask for more, but before the loss to the Packers few thought there was much hope for more.

In addition to Cutler’s solid outing, which included converting 11 of 17 third downs, Matt Forte was outstanding with 141 yards on the ground and another 25 yards on five catches, Martellus Bennett had one of his better all-around games catching and blocking, and Alshon Jeffery, while obviously limited, was effective at times with 78 yards on five catches.

Kyle Long is in fact the Bears’ new right tackle; Vladimir Ducasse the right guard, and they were below average Sunday but not a disaster.

Long, we know, will get better with time.

The Bears’ defense benefited from the offense controlling the clock for 31:52, and youngsters Will Sutton and Eddie Goldman each flashed a few times up front.

We didn’t learn a lot about the Bears’ new 3-4 scheme because they were in nickel most of the afternoon against the Packers, and the bad news from Sunday is the Bears will continue to lose games like this if they don’t get better play, better talent or both at inside linebacker and cornerback.

Ultimately, however, what we saw Sunday was a new Bears team that is much better coached than in recent seasons, has a much better plan and may have enough playmakers on offense to win a few games they shouldn’t.

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com CHICAGO – Jay Cutler knows the focus on his first game in Adam Gase’s offense will be on the interception that, for all intents and purposes, ended the Bears’ chances in their season-opening 31-23 loss to the Packers.

“That’s fair,” he said.

“I made the correction in my head. The guys made the correction out there.

We know what should have happened. That’s it.

We’ve got to keep moving forward. We’ve got to move on.”

It was an interesting game for Cutler. Yes, the interception came at a terrible time and in Packers territory, conjuring a “here we go again” response on social media. He wasn’t accurate, completing 18 of 36 passes. The offense twice got the ball inside the 10yard line and exited those trips with a field goal and a turnover on downs.

Still, however, Cutler received a plethora of praise from his teammates.

“Jay played a hell of a game. He played his [butt] off,” Alshon Jeffery said.

“I think Cutler did well,” Martellus Bennett said. “He did a good job leading us.

He made some great plays, some tough runs, making a guy miss. Those types of things really fire us up.”

“I think he did a tremendous job of managing our game, getting us in the right position, making the right calls and protecting the ball for us,” Jermon Bushrod said. “When it was his time to get back there and how the ball, he did. He did a good job.”

John Fox recognized it, too, especially Cutler’s four carries for 31 yards in scramble situations, and his improvisation when plays broke down.

“I thought Jay did a real good job,” Fox said. “His pocket awareness – he had a couple scrambles in there that I think were heads-up plays.”

When it mattered most on third down, Cutler made big plays, completing 8 of 10 passes for 123 yards. He was sacked twice and had one scramble for 12 yards and a first down. Along with Fox, Cutler wasn’t down on the performance of the offense.

“Overall, those guys fought hard. I’m proud of the offense, proud of the offensive line,” Cutler said.

“Thought Matt Forte had a heck of a game. Marty, Alshon came in there and played hard. [We have] some things to improve on, a lot of positives though as well.”

It’ll still come back to the pick, however. Cutler admitted “as soon as I let it go, I knew we were in trouble.”

Yes, 0-1 is 0-1. There are no moral victories in the NFL, and there are no style points.

All of that is true.

Still, after watching the Bears’ 31-23 defeat at the hands of the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, I keep coming to the same conclusion.

The Bears were a lot better and far more competitive than most predicted or believed they would be, while losing to a superior football team.

Coach John Fox explained it like this: “You’re only in this game to win. There’s no consolation prize and no second place. So you’re never happy (with a loss).

“But you know, this is a process, and this is the first time that myself and this staff have watched this team play a real game. Hopefully, we’ll learn from it and get better.”

The Bears were better than we thought they’d be but were in this game also because the Packers were not as good as advertised.

Cornerback Sam Shields was a one-man wrecking crew – to the Packers.

Had he not jumped offside on a Robbie Gould’s 27-yard field goal on the Bears’ third possession, setting up a first-and-goal from inside the 5-yard-line, and then been caught holding two plays later, offsetting a Jermon Bushrod holding penalty and leaving the ball at the Packers’ 4-yard line, the Bears would not have had their first touchdown, and the entire game could have looked different.

St. Louis survives late Seattle comeback, wins in OT The ASSOCIATED PRESS ST. LOUIS – Needing a yard again, Seattle handed off to Marshawn Lynch this time. It still didn’t work.

The Rams stopped the running back short of a first down Sunday, making Greg Zuerlein’s 37-yard field goal in overtime decisive in a 34-31 victory Sunday.

St. Louis survived an 18-point fourth quarter rally by the Seahawks, who famously passed from the 1 in last February’s Super Bowl and were intercepted by New England to lose.

Down, 31-24, with 53 seconds left, the Rams tied the game after Seahawks defensive back Dion Bailey stumbled on Lance Kendricks’ 37yard touchdown catch. Cary Williams’ strip of Nick Foles and 8-yard return had put Seattle up by a touchdown.

The Seahawks opened overtime with an onside kick; Bradley Marquez caught Steven Hauschka’s popped-up attempt. Officials ruled the ball was kicked directly in the air, so Marquez was OK to signal for a fair catch.

The Rams sacked Russell Wilson six times.

TITANS 42, BUCCANEERS 14: In

Tampa, Florida, Marcus Mariota made it look easy, throwing four touchdown passes and outplaying No. 1 overall draft pick Jameis Winston to lead Tennessee over Tampa Bay. The highly anticipated debut for the rookie quarterbacks was one-sided from the start, not unlike many of Mariota’s dazzling performances in college at Oregon.

BILLS 27, COLTS 14: In Orchard Park, New York, Tyrod Taylor engineered three touchdown drives and Rex Ryan’s attacking Buffalo defense put the clamps on Andrew Luck.

In his first career start, Taylor went 14 of 19 for 195 yards, including a 51-yard opening touchdown pass to Percy Harvin. Boobie Dixon and rookie Karlos Williams scored touchdowns rushing to deliver Ryan a win in his debut as Bills head coach.

CHIEFS 27, TEXANS 20: Alex Smith threw for 243 yards and three touchdowns in the first half against the mistake-prone Texans at Houston.

Travis Kelce caught two touchdown passes in the first quarter, the first coming after Kansas City intercepted Brian Hoyer on his first throw as a Texan.

DOLPHINS 17, REDSKINS 10:

In Landover, Maryland, Jarvis Landry returned a punt 69 yards for a touchdown with 10:22 left to give Miami its first lead.

Landry’s score broke open a tight game in which the Redskins amassed more yards and dominated the time of possession, but could not pull away.

JETS 31, BROWNS 10: At East Rutherford, New Jersey, Ryan Fitzpatrick threw two touchdown passes and Chris Ivory ran for two scores in coach Todd Bowles’ debut.

The Jets had five takeaways against the Browns, including an interception of Johnny Manziel, who came in late in the first quarter for the injured Josh McCown.

Jets rookie linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin was taken to a hospital after being carted off the field with head and neck injuries.

PANTHERS 20, JAGUARS 9: At Jacksonville, Florida, Josh Norman returned an interception for a touchdown, and the Panthers did just enough offensively.

Norman provided the big play in the third quarter when he stepped in front of a pass intended for rookie running back T.J. Yeldon near

the sideline and went untouched the other way for a 30-yard score. Norman pointed at Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles as he trotted toward the end zone and then waved bye-bye.

BRONCOS 19, RAVENS 13: Former Ravens safety Darian Stewart, who followed Gary Kubiak from Baltimore to Denver over the winter, snatched the ball from tight end Crockett Gillmore in the end zone with 28 seconds left to seal a win for Peyton Manning and the Broncos at Denver.

Joe Flacco drove the Ravens to the Denver 16 in the final minute. One play before Stewart’s interception, cornerback Brady Roby got a hand in Steve Smith Sr.’s face and a would-be touchdown catch bounded away from the veteran receiver.

CARDINALS 31, SAINTS 19: Carson Palmer threw three touchdown passes in his first game back from a torn ACL and Arizona opened its season with a victory over New Orleans at Glendale Arizona.

Drew Brees threw for 355 yards, but the Saints had to settle for Zach Hocker’s field goals four times.

CHARGERS 33, LIONS 28: Philip Rivers rallied San Diego to 30 straight points, including throwing a go-ahead, 13-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ladarius Green early in the fourth quarter, and the Chargers stunned Detroit in what could be their final home opener at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

Rivers overcame two interceptions, including a 31-yard return for a touchdown by Glover Quin, to complete 35 of 42 passes for 404 yards and two scores.

Green was subbing for Antonio Gates, who’s suspended without pay for four games for testing positive for PEDs.

BENGALS 33, RAIDERS 13:

Andy Dalton threw for 269 yards and two touchdowns and Jeremy Hill ran for two scores to help Cincinnati spoil coach Jack Del Rio’s debut in Oakland.

Dalton had it easy all day long as he faced little pressure and often had receivers running free in the Raiders secondary. He connected on two touchdown passes with tight end Tyler Eifert as the Bengals broke out to a 33-0 lead and coasted.

If the opener is any indication of Fox’s plans for his first season with the Bears, expect a lot of touches for Forte; a controlled, precise passing game; and increased emphasis on preventing big plays on defense.

Cutler found Martellus Bennett for a 24-yard touchdown pass with 34 seconds remaining, but Green Bay (1-0) recovered the ensuing onside kick. Alshon Jeffery also had five receptions for 78 yards for the Bears in his return from a calf injury.

Rodgers threw two of his three touchdown passes to James Jones, who signed a one-year deal with Green Bay on Monday after he was cut by the New York Giants last weekend. Notes and quotes from a bonus weekend, where I had the opportunity to see four local football teams in action – Lincoln-Way West at Lincoln-Way Central on Friday night and Lockport at Joliet Central on Saturday afternoon.

• Quality pass receivers deserve all the accolades that come their way. But none of them is better on his own than when he is paired with a teammate or two who also can catch the ball and make something happen after the catch.

One example comes from Lincoln-Way West. During the first two games, Jake Mauney was the No. 1 receiver. But when it came time to exploit the Lincoln-Way Central secondary during West’s 28-0 victory, Warriors quarterback Connor Lowman called on Dylan McHale.

McHale caught a 43-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter and a 32-yard pass in the third quarter, finishing with three catches for 79 yards. His efforts helped provide a change of pace from running back Gabe Montalvo, who enjoyed his usual sparkling night.

“If safeties get in the hole against us, we have good receivers and a good quarterback,” West coach Dave Ernst said. “We feel we can exploit that. McHale made big plays tonight, and we really like our other wide receiver (Mauney), too. Also, our tight end, Ben Zordani, is outstanding. It just happened that we didn’t throw to him tonight.”

• Joliet Central’s No. 1 receiver the first two games of the season was Jomarre McNair. In Saturday’s 41-0 loss to Lockport, McNair caught two passes from quarterback Zach Wisneski for 32 yards. Meanwhile, Kamren Smith, the receiver on the opposite side, grabbed nine for 119 yards, with much of the yardage coming after the catch.

Both receivers perform triple duty as they also are important pieces in the defensive secondary and return kicks.

Reed-Custer girls win volleyball title at Seneca SUBMITTED REPORTS SENECA – Reed-Custer defeated Seneca in the final, 25-22, 27-25, to win the Seneca Lady Irish Volleyball Tournament on Saturday.

The Comets were second in their pool, defeating Serena, 2522, 25-12, and Woodland, 25-14, 2520, but losing to Peotone, 25-20, 25-17.

Kassidy Barr led the Comets with 32 kills, 11 digs, eight aces and eight blocks. Madelyn Alton followed up with 24 kills, 25 digs, 11 aces and five blocks, Mollie Rabe tallied 38 digs and the duo of Alyssa Tiangco and Kailey O’Connor had a combined 42 block touches.

Lewis wins four; USF drops two:

Lewis finished 4-0 in the Flyer Festival at Neil Carey Arena.

Lewis defeated Malone, 25-12, 2520, 25-16; Minnesota State, 25-21, 25-21, 25-18; Ohio Dominican, 2518, 25-14, 25-21; and Rollins, 25-18, 19-25, 25-9, 28-26.

Against Malone, Alexis Davito (Lockport) and Cassidy Parsons led the Flyers (7-1) with eight kills each. Nicole Yuede had a match-high 19 digs against Minnesota State. Elizabeth Hyland (Plainfield Central) led Lewis with 11 kills while adding eight digs. Davito pitched in six kills and three key aces.

Maddie Seliga and Hyland each had eight kills against Ohio.

Davito had nine. Aly Schneider hit .409 with a match-high 11 kills. Parsons led Lewis with 23 digs against Rollins.

Meanwhile, St. Francis lost to Malone 27-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-13, and to Maryville, 25-18, 25-20, 2519. JoAnna Nowicki (Morris) had seven kills in 19 attempts without an error against Malone, good for a .368 attack percentage. Danielle Conrad set a team-best 22 assists to go along with seven kills, seven digs, two aces and two blocks.

Against Maryville, Jessica Karalow (Minooka) and Shelby Kupferschmid led the Saints with eight kills apiece. Brooke Hartnell logged 24 digs.

the season, St. Francis dropped the nonconference game at the Bavarian Inn Soccer Complex.

USF (2-4) tied the game with a pair of goals 97 seconds apart from Drew Wolfer at 42:02 and Anthony Skrip (Plainfield South) at 43:39. Abel Trujillo scored the first of his two goals on the day for the Saints in the 73rd minute.

Trujillo found the back of the net in the game’s final minute.

Lewis 4, Saint Joseph’s 2: At Rensselaer, Indiana, Lewis rallied from a two-goal halftime deficit Sunday for the GLVC victory.

Maggie Moran scored twice, and Julie Gunnerson and Greccia Miranda (New Lincoln Way Central) scored once each for the Flyers (4-1, 2-0).

Lewis 1, Indianapolis 0: Mackenzie Fuller scored the goal in Friday’s GLVC opener. Jennifer Meyer (Lockport) recorded a save to earn the third shutout for Lewis (3-1, 1-0).

St. Francis 2, Bethel (Ind.) 1: Yessica Reyes (Joliet Central) and Kathia Arrendondo (Joliet Central) scored eight minutes apart to lead St. Francis (3-1) to the nonconference victory. Reyes tallied her first goal of the year off an assist from Trish Masterson.

Arrendondo scored her second of the year and first game-winner.

Bethany Dombkowski finished with five saves.

USF takes second: St. Francis finished second Saturday at the 14-team Battle at Blackthorn, hosted by Bethel (Ind.) at Blackthorn Golf Club. Krystal Garritson (Lockport) earned a spot on the all-tournament team as she tied for third place among 70 players with a score of 17-over-par 161. Kenseth, JGR 1 ‘on a roll’ as they head toward Joliet

By JENNA FRYER The Associated Press RICHMOND, Va. – There was a stretch of Saturday night’s race when all four of Joe Gibbs’ cars were leading the pack around Richmond International Raceway.

The team owner could barely stand to watch.

“That is the most nervous that I get,” Gibbs said. “I saw them up there. I saw some beating and banging there. I think that’s when I’m always the most nervous, when you’ve got your cars up front and having a good night.”

He should be used to it by now.

JGR continued its dominating season with an exhibition from its roster that ended with Matt Kenseth’s fourth win of the season. The win put Kenseth in a tie with JGR teammate Kyle Busch and sixtime champion Jimmie Johnson for the top seeds in the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship.

The 10-race playoff series begins Sunday at Chicagoland Speedway in Joliet.

Kenseth has won three of the last six races, and JGR has won eight of the last 11.

“Certainly right now as a company, we’re on a roll,” said Kenseth, who led 352 of the 400 laps.

The 16-driver Chase field was set in the regular-season finale, where only four spots were really up for grabs. Jamie McMurray clinched his berth as soon as he took the green flag, but Jeff Gordon, Ryan Newman, Paul Menard and Clint Bowyer all had to protect their positions.

Gordon had to finish 17th or better to guarantee his slot, and he finished a solid seventh.

Bowyer was in a little bit more of a precarious position, as he came to Richmond ranked 16th in the field and unable to afford any mistakes Saturday night. He never doubted he was up for the challenge at one of his favorite tracks, and he finished 10th to give Toyota five cars in the Chase field.

It wasn’t supposed to be difficult for Newman or Menard, but the Richard Childress Racing drivers struggled the entire race. They both ended three laps down from the leaders, with Newman 20th and Menard 26th.

“We don’t know whether to be happy or sad, it was such a bad race for us,” Menard said of a post-race conversation he had with his crew chief. “Obviously, very excited to be in the Chase; it was a goal that we set at the beginning of the year. We’ve had a lot of good runs this year; tonight just wasn’t one of them.”

Aric Almirola briefly tried to shake up the playoff picture by charging his way to the front to race with the leaders. He made it to fourth but had nothing for the JGR cars. Had Almirola won, he’d have earned an automatic berth into the Chase and bumped another driver.

Instead, he’ll watch the championship race go on without him after he made it last season with a surprise victory at Daytona.

“Disappointed for sure; I drove my heart out,” Almirola said. “We were in it last year, and we got a taste of what it was like to be in the Chase. This race team is a great race team, and we wanted another shot at it, and we just came up short.”

It’s the first playoff berths for McMurray and Menard – and last for Gordon, who is retiring at the end of the season.

“It’s nice to be in the Chase and take that relief and take that breath and now go reset and see what we can do over the next 10,” Gordon said.

It does indeed reset now as the Chase gives the entire field an equal shot to race for the championship. Divided into three rounds before the Nov. 22 finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway, a win automatically advances the driver into the next round. Four drivers will be knocked out after every third race.

“It’s a whole new ballgame now,” said reigning series champion Kevin Harvick, who finished a quiet 14th at Richmond.

But it’s unclear if anyone will have enough to challenge JGR down the stretch.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS PHILADELPHIA – Playing the worst team in baseball was troublesome for the Cubs.

Ryan Howard homered and drove in three runs to help the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Cubs, 7-4, Sunday. The Phillies won two straight to split a four-game series with the Cubs after sweeping them at Wrigley Field in July.

“I’m just glad we’re not in the same division as the Phillies,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said after hit steam finished the season 2-5 against Philadelphia.

Cubs starter Dan Haren struggled after his start was pushed back one day because of rain. He gave up four runs and seven hits in three innings.

“I was fighting it,” Haren said. “Very frustrating. Not what I wanted to do.”

Chris Coghlan hit a homer and two triples for the Cubs, who still have a comfortable lead over San Francisco for the second NL wild-card spot. They fell to 6½ games behind NL Central-leading St. Louis.

“We didn’t pitch well early and give the Phillies credit for hanging in,” Maddon said.

CHICAGO – Minnesota Twins manager Paul Molitor hoped he could get three games out of 40-year-old Torii Hunter this weekend against the White Sox. He got the most important one Sunday. Hunter battled with Sox starter Chris Sale, fouling off five pitches before hitting a three-run home run in the first inning. He later added an RBI single as the Twins beat the Sox, 7-0.

NBA great Moses Malone dies at age 60

Moses Malone devoured rebounds so easily it sometimes seemed he missed shots on purpose to pad his total before scoring.

All those points and rebounds made Malone an NBA great.

A few words, and one championship, made the 6-foot-10 center a Philadelphia sports icon.

Malone, a three-time NBA MVP and one of basketball’s most ferocious rebounders, died Sunday in Norfolk, Virginia, where was scheduled to appear at a charity golf event. He was 60.

Norfolk police said Malone was found unresponsive and not breathing in his room by hotel staff shortly before 8 a.m. Norfolk Fire Rescue responded and pronounced Malone dead at the scene. A cause of death has not been determined.

Djokovic tops Federer for 2nd U.S. Open title, 10th major

NEW YORK – Thrilled to win a point in the U.S. Open final, and bent on proving a point, Novak Djokovic leaped and roared and threw an uppercut, then glared at some of the thousands of spectators pulling for Roger Federer.

After winning another point in that game, Djokovic nodded as he smiled toward the stands. And moments later, Djokovic shook his right arm, bloodied by an early fall, and

bad start against the Twins.

Gibson (10-10) gave up five hits in 72⁄3 innings, struck out seven and walked one, and Casey Fien and Michael Tonkin followed with hitless relief.

Sale (12-9) lasted three innings and dropped to 1-4 with a 7.36 ERA in six starts against the Twins this year.

He allowed six runs and nine hits and struck out three, raising his AL-leading total to 250.

Hunter said Molitor should want him in the lineup as the Twins battle for a playoff spot.

Minnesota began the day one game behind Texas for the AL’s second wild-card spot.

At the bridge table, playing the right card can convert a negative score into a positive one.

When I watch less experienced players, they so often play the wrong card. Of course, if their partners are paying no attention, it doesn’t matter.

But for the next couple of weeks, let’s assume we would like to defeat more contracts.

How should East-West play to beat four spades after West leads the club ace?

In the bidding, North’s jump to four spades was an overbid because South might have had nothing. If North had bid only three spades, South probably would have passed, thinking that his diamonds were worthless, sitting under the opener.

Third hand’s job at trick one is to say whether he does or does not have the club queen, the card touching the two honors promised by partner’s lead.

If he has the queen (and no desire for a shift), he typically signals with the highest spot card he can afford. Here, though, he can do even better, playing the queen under partner’s ace. This shows the queen and the jack (or an extremely unlikely – and impossible here – singleton queen).

Now West should continue with a low club to give East the lead for the killing diamond shift.

When you cannot win the trick, (if possible) play the top of touching honors.

save money and improve your quality of life. And you’ll receive better treatment as well, with team members following up to find out if you’ve stuck with your medication regimen, gotten a scheduled screening or kept an appointment with a specialist.

As your doctor’s office makes the switch, ask the following questions: • Who are the members of my care team?

• What are their roles?

• How will this change my access to care?

• How often will I have appointments?

• When will my team develop a care plan for me?

• Will the PCMH staff provide educational resources to help me better manage my own health care?

• Does the PCMH use a patient portal?

A patient portal is a computer-based connection between you and the doctor’s office. It enables you to look up your test results and medical records, ask for prescription refills, and send questions to the nurses and doctors.

Several national accreditation programs provide certifications and keep track of a PCMH’s progress. These programs hold the PCMH to high standards.

Still, make sure to provide plenty of feedback during the transition. There may be some bumps in the road to this new system. Letting the practice know whether it’s meeting your needs will benefit you in the long run.

Dear Dr. K: I’ve been going to a family medicine practice for years.

My doctor just told me the practice is going to become a “patient-centered medical home.”

What does that mean?

How is this going to affect my health care?

Dear Reader: Many family medicine practices across the country are switching to a team-based model of care called a patient-centered medical home (PCMH).

The PCMH turns a doctor’s practice into a physician-led team.

This team will develop a long-term treatment plan for you that focuses on prevention.

Basically, the PCMH was born out of the realization that 21st-century medical care has become more complicated. There are more tests, more treatments, more types of specialists – and more to coordinate. By and large, this extra technology improves your health, if it is coordinated. The team makes sure that all pertinent information about your health is available to any health professional caring for you. It also makes sure you understand what the plan is for your care, and why.

To help you meet your goals, the team will educate you and coordinate care with other specialists if necessary. The team must be available to you, at least by telephone, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year.

PCMHs took off in the late 2000s among family practice and internal medicine doctors. An important stimulus was Congress’ passage of the Affordable Care Act (called “Obamacare” by many). Since then, thousands of doctors’ offices have made the switch.

A couple of years back, he started buying me potted plants rather than cut flowers because “you get more for your money.”

He buys me plants three or four times a year, and after receiving the third one I asked him to please go back to cut flowers.

I neither like house plants nor do I want something I must find a place for in our yard.

Despite this, he continues to buy me potted plants every time. Each time he says he “forgot” I don’t want them.

I don’t want to seem ungrateful, but I am really frustrated. Today I received my 10th one. I suppose I seem like a jerk, but I really don’t understand why he keeps buying me the one thing I asked him not to buy. Your thoughts?

to have married a man who is not only practical, but also unimaginative when it comes to gift-buying.

That he would continue to buy you something you have repeatedly told him you would prefer not to have seems the opposite of considerate to me. (On the other hand, many women would be glad that their spouse remembered any special occasion.)

Suggestion: The next time it happens, put HIM in charge of watering, replanting and caring for the plant, and things may change.

Dear Abby: My girlfriend, “Ashley,” and I have been dating for three years.

Every year, I ask her to go on a trip with me to St. Louis where my parents live. It’s a weekend trip my parents sponsor for our entire family, and it involves a Cardinals baseball game.

Every year she refuses to go.

When she invites me on her family fishing trip to New Mexico, I go.

When I ask why she won’t do the same for my family trips, she makes excuses like she doesn’t want to get up early.

Most people in my family are early risers. Ashley is not. I tell her she can sleep as long as she likes; no one will care.

I believe there is something else that Ashley isn’t telling me. I have expressed my unhappiness about this, but it does no good. I am to the point of just ending this relationship. I don’t understand her reluctance.

I really want her to come with me and spend more time with my family.
