JOLIET – Spanish Community Center Executive Director Elizabeth Nevarez told community leaders at a presentation Thursday how her staff had to use their personal cars to help bus the children of a homeless woman who needed the center’s help.

Thanks to the donation of a 15-seat passenger van by Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow and Terry D’Arcy of D’Arcy Automobiles, the center now has a goto vehicle for such situations.

“It’s certainly an honor to be considered worthy of such a gift,” Nevarez said at the dedication ceremony in the center’s gym. “There’s no doubt we will be using it for our daily work here.”

JOLIET – Pamela J. McGuire announced Thursday night she will not seek re-election for a sixth term in 2016 as Will County Circuit Clerk of Court.

She does intend to serve out her current term, according to a news release from McGuire.

McGuire, a Democrat, is in her fifth term. She was first elected in 1996.

“It has been my pleasure and honor to serve as your Will County Circuit Clerk of Court for the last 19 years,” she said in the news release. “I would like to take this opportunity to thank the citizens of Will County, those who endorsed me, my family and my staff for their support, confidence and trust through the years.

“My staff has done an excellent job fulfilling the mission of the office by showing courtesy, respect and impartiality while operating efficiently, and for that I thank them,” she continued.

In the release, McGuire endorsed Andrea Lynn Chasteen, whom she said would be seeking

NEW LENOX – Will County Green will host a Recyclepalooza event from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Saturday at Spencer School, 1711 Spencer Road in New Lenox during the annual Sharefest.

The event will collect household hazardous materials and other recyclable items, according to a news release from the county.

Electronics, such as computers, televisions, printers, radios, phones, VCRs, microwaves, vacuums and more will be accepted, as will foam plastic, wood and carpet.

Sharefest has become the largest reuse event in Will County.

Various items, including clothing, shoes, home goods, books, toys and bikes will be accepted Saturday and Sept. 19 for reuse by area residents.

JOLIET – The New Street railroad viaduct pedestrian tunnel, east of Chicago Street and west of York Avenue, in Joliet will be closed for painting beginning Monday.

The closure is because of the work being done as part of the Union Pacific Railroad’s work on the Heritage Corridor railroad bridges near the Joliet Gateway Center transportation campus, according to a news release from the city.

Access to the New Street commuter lot is available from Chicago Street, the release stated, and a new entrance to the lot has been constructed to the south to provide additional access from Marion Street.

Pedestrian access through the New Street railroad viaduct will be restored as soon as possible. Until that time, pedestrian access to York Avenue and Michigan Street will be through the existing Union Station tunnel or the Jefferson Street sidewalk.

Growing fire academy in Romeoville shows changes in rescue since 2001

OMEOVILLE – Romeoville Fire Department Battalion Chief Jon Ibrahim remembers firefighters huddled around the TV after the first airplane hit the World Trade Center North Tower on Sept. 11, 2001.

“All we knew was there was a fire in the World Trade Center,” Ibrahim said. “It piqued our interest because we were always wondering how it would be to fight a fire in a building that large.”

Then, a second plane struck the South Tower.

That’s when Ibrahim said they knew it was some type of attack. And about an hour later, the South Tower collapsed.

“Nobody thought a highrise building like that could collapse,” he said. “I remember somebody said, ‘Oh my God, all those firefighters were inside that building.’ ” Among those who died in the attack were 343 New York firefighters and 71 law enforcement officers.

For firefighters, 9/11 was a turning point in how they think about and train for rescue operations. And one fire academy is becoming a popular place to learn those operations.

“By learning the skills here, you have a wider toolbox and you get more confident,” Hansen said. “They have every single type of tool you can think of. We may not have that back at the fire department, but this will maybe make extraction easier and make the job go faster.”

Romeoville Fire Academy

Five years after 9/11, the Romeoville Fire Academy started as a place where firefighters in the Chicago area could get certifications and training.

Since it began, the academy has grown every year, attracting firefighters from Canada to Chile. With more than 2,300 students and more than 60 instructors teaching 175 classes a year, it’s now the second-largest fire academy in the state behind the University of Illinois Fire Service Institute, and is completely supported by student fees.

Along with international firefighters, the academy is popular with fire districts and departments in the Chicago suburbs.

“In many of our classes we teach them things you don’t do every day,” said Ibrahim, who runs the academy.

Mike Kucaba from the Northwest Homer Fire and Ambulance Protection District teaches classes at the academy, using his 18 years of firefighting experience.

“I teach the guys the objectives at the same time as keeping my skills up,” he said.

Kucaba said it depends on the time of year and where the fire department students are coming from, but most use the academy to brush up on their fire rescue skills, while some see it as an opportunity to train with equipment their departments may not have.

Along with vehicle extraction, classes focus on classroom and handson instruction related to firefighting. And 9/11 has definitely made its mark on the academy.

“We’re probably better prepared now than ever before,” Ibrahim said of readiness against terrorist attacks.

“A lot of federal grant and [Department of] Homeland Security money went into training.”

That can be seen in the academy’s building collapse rescue class. The class trains firefighters at a specially-designed course at the Hanson Materials quarry in Romeoville.

“This is solely for structural collapse,” Ibrahim said.

“We deal with large concrete structures, big debris piles with tunnels and mazes.

And it even has capabilities for rescue teams, organized rescue teams and use of K-9 search dogs.

Ibrahim said 9/11 also led to hazardous materials classes and the use of chemical detecting equipment.

In addition, not long after 9/11, the nationwide anthrax scare led to more training and equipment, such as nerve gas attack masks, as well as standard air masks.

East Joliet Fire Department Chief Robert Scholtes said one of the major changes 9/11 brought to fire departments was a greater focus on communication.

“It’s about getting more information on the incidents you are responding to and having a better awareness of what is in your surroundings.” Scholtes said. “The biggest part is cooperation between different agencies.”

Scholtes has been chief since 2000.

“It was all because of terrorism,” Ibrahim said.

“9/11 had an emotional impact. After that night, people would look at us differently.

Everybody got out of the way quick for emergency vehicles.

It was another look.

“They knew the sacrifice.”

District 210 hires interim consultant

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The Lincoln-Way High School District 210 Board decided to hire a retired educator to review daily school district operations as it moves forward with the transition process after the closing of North High School.

The board also heard a recommendation from board member Christopher McFadden to change financial and auditing practices, including possibly an independent audit of Lincoln-Way’s expenses.

At Thursday’s board meeting, Steven Langert, a retired assistant superintendent who

previously worked for District 230 – based in Orland Park – and Plainfield School District 202, was unanimously approved by board members to work as an interim consultant.

District officials will pay a total of $60,000 for 100 days of Langert’s service, said Superintendent Scott Tingley. He made the recommendation to the board for hiring Langert, who will start Tuesday and work six hours each day.

Langert will work in the district business office reviewing daily operations and program spending, Tingley said. He said it was an “opportune time” to bring in a consultant as some other district officials focus on

the transition process.

Board members were faced with considering approval of the fiscal 2016 budget Thursday, but Tingley recommended they hold off until the Sept. 24 board meeting at North. He said because of Wednesday’s budget hearing, many questions cropped up that he wants district officials to answer before board members take action.

The board decided to postpone considering approval of the budget.

The proposed budget has estimated overall revenues of $101.4 million, $106.6 million in expenses and a $5.2 million deficit. The budget came attached with a deficit reduction plan,

which anticipates a balanced budget in fiscal 2017, based on operating budget figures.

District officials say they may need to use short-term borrowing to start fiscal 2017 with positive fund balances, according to the plan. They anticipate no change in long-term borrowing.

During Thursday’s meeting, McFadden noted he was appointed to an auditing committee and he prepared several recommendations, such as improvements to the treasurer’s report and the business office, as well as enacting “some basic checks and balances.”

More importantly, he said, the school district needs to

change its auditing firm and he wanted to authorize an independent audit of expenses. He said he was willing to hear Langert’s take on the situation first.

“Unless I hear something earth shattering, I do plan on making the motion to approve an outside independent audit, and I hope the rest of the board will join me on that,” McFadden said.

McFadden mentioned audit recommendations at Wednesday’s budget hearing, where an attendee asked if the auditors were doing their job correctly.

McFadden said “over my dead body will we pay those auditors another penny. That’s in my opinion.”

New Rialto holiday fundraiser starts in November ’Twas the Month before Christmas ... at the Rialto! schedule

Late Wednesday, the Rialto announced ’Twas the Month Before Christmas ... at the Rialto!, a monthlong fundraiser with 12 separate events through Dec. 20. ’Twas the Month Before Christmas replaces Festival of Trees, which had a six-year run as the Rialto’s major fundraiser.

The new fundraiser has some of the same features as Festival of Trees.

It’s during the holidays and has a Christmas theme. Popular events such as the Teddy Bear Tea and Von Heidecke’s Chicago Festival Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” remain part of the fundraiser festivities. And, while contributors no longer will make donations through an auction of elaborately decorated Christmas trees, they will bid on similarly seasonal holiday wreaths.

Judge denies new trial in ’09 Frankfort Township murder bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man convicted of a 2009 Frankfort Township murder said he has bone marrow cancer.

Brian Trainauskas has polycythemia vera and wants to serve his sentence in the Department of Corrections facility with the best medical treatment, defense attorney George Andrews told Judge Dave Carlson on Thursday.

Carlson denied Trainauskas’ motion for a new trial in the murder of Monica Timar and scheduled sentencing for next month.

“I reviewed the transcript.

The defense was fully given opportunity to cross-examine [a crime lab technician]

about the blood on the gun,” Carlson told Trainauskas and Andrews.

Carlson found Trainauskas, 40, guilty in June of killing Timar after a bench trial. Timar disappeared Jan. 20, 2009, and her Brian body was found Trainauskas three days later in the trunk of her Ford Mustang in the 21000 block of South 78th Avenue in Frankfort Township.

The defense claimed while Trainauskas allowed his friend access to his home, he was not responsible for the despondent woman’s death.

was guilty because Timar’s body was discovered in the trunk of her car, and her blood was found in his house and inside the barrel of a shotgun he sold a friend the day before Timar’s body was uncovered.

Trainauskas was interviewed by police after the body was found and gave statements implicating himself in Timar’s death. But an appellate court ruled the statements could only be used if Trainauskas testified, which he declined to do during the trial.

Trainauskas also is charged with trying to hire an inmate at the Will County Jail to kill an assistant state’s attorney, force another person to confess to Timar’s slaying and subsequently kill the confessor.

Gonzalez on Thursday presented reports and statements indicating he was physically abused throughout his childhood.

He told Burmila he is less scared to go to prison than to face his uncle’s family.

“I have no excuses. I have no justifications. To all of you, I’m sorry,” Gonzalez said.

Burmila said his own observations made during court proceedings contradict Gonzalez’s statements.

“Mr. Gonzalez said he’s not making any excuses, then [he] offers excuses,” Burmila said. “The defendant cross-examined his mother for three or four days [with] every intention to humiliate his mother. ... It’s not lost on me that the defendant after hearing most of the state’s case chose to plead guilty.”

8 Will County associate judge appointed to fill own vacancy

The Administrative Office of Illinois Courts announced Thursday that Osterberger was elected by a majority of Will County’s 16 circuit judges to serve a four-year term on the bench. While vote totals are confidential, Osterberger may have received the same number as when she wasn’t retained in June.

“Illinois is the only state

where this can happen,” Chief Judge Richard Schoenstedt said. “It’s a unique way the law is set up, but [her reappointment] is a no -issue. It’s simple math.”

Associate judges are appointed when they receive votes from more than half the circuit judges, but associate judges need 60 percent of the circuit judges’ votes to be retained, Schoenstedt said.

“If the vote for retention was 9-to-7, she didn’t get it, but that same vote, 9-to-7, put her back on,” he said. “She had the support of the majority.”

Osterberger, a former Will County assistant state’s attorney, first became an associate judge in 2010 and heard misdemeanor traffic cases. As a member of the Bar in good standing, she was eligible to apply for the vacancy.

“I’m really happy to have the opportunity to serve the public again,” Osterberger said Thursday.

She declined to comment on the earlier election or why she pursued her own vacancy.

Schoenstedt said Osterberger will start hearing cases again in a few weeks.

There were many factors taken into consideration when evaluating the future of Gus Macker, one of them being its affect on downtown retail as the tournament takes up significant space, Applegate said.

Karen Ortiz, a Gus Macker committee member who has a husband, daughter, son and grandson who have played in the tournament, said she is disappointed and surprised by the news.

“It’s well-run and a great thing for the youth,” she said.

Ortiz acknowledged that retailers haven’t always welcomed the tournament, but said she works at one and doesn’t see it hurting business, adding that people come from outside of Morris and may return because of it.

On Oct. 3, the hockey championship trophy will make an appearance in Morris and Wilmington. It will then appear Oct. 25 in Diamond.

Scott Sypolt, an independent attorney who’s worked with the Blackhawks, plans to bring the trophy to Morris on Oct. 3 by helicopter. People will be able to view it at Get Fit Fitness Center, 110 E. Waverly St., during the afternoon, he said. Sypolt is the owner of multiple Get Fit Fitness Centers.

Sypolt also brought the trophy to Morris in 2013.

“It’s just a great experience,” he said. “It’s a great,

unifying experience. Whether you like hockey or not, people are just drawn to the cup.”

The trophy will then go to Wilmington High School, 209 Wildcat Court, that evening, where Sypolt also plans to fly it in by helicopter, he said. Wilmington will be the site of a future Get Fit Fitness Center.

Wilmington School District 209-U Superintendent Jay Plese said more details about the cup’s visit to the school will be available next week, such as information on tickets.

He said the appearance will happen between 7:30 and 10:30 p.m.

The Stanley Cup will then appear Oct. 25 at the Get Fit Fitness Center in the Diamond-Coal City area, 2525 E. Division St., Diamond, he said.

MORRIS – After 13 years, the Morris Downtown Development Partnership has decided not to host the annual Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament next year.

MDDP Executive Director Julie Applegate said Thursday the MDDP board felt it was best to focus on expanding upon the success of the Liberty 5K Run/ Walk and the Liberty Arts Festival. Applegate said both events appeal to a broader audience.

“Gus Macker is a great event,” Applegate said. “But we felt it’d be best to focus on events with the most potential.”

The tournament, Applegate said, appeals mostly to athletes.

She said Liberty Arts, which will see a few minor tweaks, attracts every age group. The Liberty 5K Run/Walk has been set apart from other 5Ks in the

area, she said, because of its dedication to honoring veterans and patriotism.

Applegate said Gus Macker should be remembered as a great, family-friendly event that brought many people to Morris who otherwise wouldn’t have come, and because of it, continue to return. She thanked participants, residents, sponsors and donors.

“It will be missed,” Applegate said. “I’ll be the first to say that.”

She said she hopes another local organization, perhaps a larger one with more volunteer help, can take over and keep Gus Macker alive in Morris.

“A group with more people might be able to overcome some of the challenges,” Applegate said.

CHICAGO – Republican lawmakers are pitching a new idea they say could make a small dent in Illinois’ worstin-the-nation pension debt at a time when the state has few remaining options for dealing with the multibillion-dollar problem.

Rep. Mark Batinick said Thursday he wants the Illinois House to hold hearings on a plan to offer state employees nearing retirement a lump sum payment for a portion of their pension benefits, rather than an annuity.

The so-called “exchange option,” which would be voluntary, is commonly used by corporations to cut long-term pension costs. It’s unclear how much money it would save the state, but the Plainfield Republican said Illinois needs to start taking “small bites” out of its roughly $111 billion un-

funded pension liability.

“Does it completely solve the pension crisis? No,” Batinick said. “Does it move it in the right direction? Absolutely.”

The latest proposal comes as Illinois lawmakers – already wrangling over a state budget that’s billions in the red – are seeing pension costs sharply increase and their alternatives for reducing them dwindle.

The Illinois Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that a 2013 overhaul approved by lawmakers was unconstitutional because it cut retirement benefits.

On Wednesday, a spokeswoman for Democratic Attorney General Lisa Madigan said the office had reviewed its legal options and decided not to appeal the case to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Uncertainty reigns over possible end of 9/11 health programs

By DAVID B. CARUSO The Associated Press NEW YORK – Fourteen years after the 9/11 attacks, a new round of uncertainty looms for people exposed to the million tons of toxic dust that fell on New York when hijacked jets toppled the World Trade Center.

Two federal programs that promised billions of dollars in compensation and medical care to sick 9/11 responders and survivors are set to expire next year, five years after they were created by Congress.

As Friday’s anniversary of the terror attacks approached, advocates for responders renewed their push for an extension. Bills in the House and Senate would keep the health program going indefinitely while making billions of additional dollars available for compensation for people who fall ill.

But the debate over an extension is taking place in a fog of ambiguity. Many 9/11 responders, such as Charles Diaz, are trying to figure out whether some or all of their care might be covered by private, public or union health insurance plans when the pro-

grams end.

Diaz, a retired Sanitation Department police captain, suffered a broken arm when the twin towers fell and was later diagnosed with a cancer that he blames on exposure to dust.

Today, he relies on the World Trade Center Health Program to pay for the anti-leukemia drug Sprycel, which has a list price of $10,300 a month.

Who will pay for the drug if the program goes away?

“I have no idea,” Diaz said.

Almost 21,600 people received treatment through the World Trade Center Health Program over the past year, according to federal data, but officials haven’t been able to say how many patients might lose access to doctors or medication if the program shuts down as planned next September.

Most health plans for active or retired city workers do cover cancer care, but some patients can still get socked with thousands of dollars in co-payments, depending on factors including availability of worker’s compensation, the strength of their union’s pharmacy plan and whether they live close enough to New York to be treated by an in-network

doctor.

“It’s a very complex world of cost, and a lot of our members just don’t want to go there,” said Dr. John Howard, director of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, which oversees the World Trade Center health program.

Congress initially capped spending on both the health and compensation programs and designed them to close within five years, because of concerns about the cost of caring for so many people, including many with common illnesses that might be unrelated to 9/11.

It’s not clear how much it would cost to keep the program going, although the safety and health institute has offered one speculative estimate of an additional $1.83 billion to $2.22 billion over the next five years.

That would be a big increase over the $763 million the program spent from its creation through the end of August.

About 58 percent of that money went to patient care.

Just under a third covered administrative costs. About $97 million was spent on research and data collection.

We must never forget

Fourteen years ago, the horror and tragedy of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on U.S. soil unfolded before our eyes on TV. Four passenger airliners were hijacked by members of al-Qaida with the intent of flying them into buildings. Three of them reached their target – the North and South towers of the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Virginia. A fourth plane crashed in a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers tried to subdue the hijackers.

The towers crumbled to the ground. Nearly 3,000 people were killed. Our nation was stunned, but our resiliency rose to the top.

The nation came together as one to mourn, to reflect and to stand up to terrorists. We were united.

Fast forward 14 years, and those feelings of unity and a nation standing together as one are long gone.

We’re not sure where along the way those feelings regressed.

Look at our country now. Divided by partisan politics. Divided by ideology. Divided by racism and intolerance. As each year passes, the memories fade a little more. Never forget becomes harder to remember.

We should never forget. Thankfully, there are other people and organizations in our area who feel the same way. There are events planned throughout our communities and we encourage you to attend, and to remember.

As you go about your Friday, it likely will feel like any other Friday before the weekend starts. Take a moment to remember those who lost their lives in the deadly Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

When you do, also take the time to think about how united we were as a county and what you can do to get us closer to unity and further from divisiveness.

All lives are valuable, whether young or old, men or women, regardless of race, faith or economic status.

Each member of every community in the nation is entitled to the “unalienable rights” listed in the Declaration of Independence: “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” The fact that “life” is listed first is no accident – the benefits of living in a free country cannot be enjoyed without life.

It is this life that has been so tragically taken away recently from a number of citizens whose calling in life is to protect the lives of others.

Law enforcement officers are our sons and daughters, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters, grandparents, friends and co-workers. We are part of our communities. Many of us were born and raised in or near where we now serve the public. We care about our communities. We have sworn to protect and serve the people in those communities.

Chris Southwood It is a difficult and dangerous time to be a police officer. Law enforcement officers put on their uniforms and go to work to protect their communities in a state of hyper-vigilance. We are highly trained and are often called upon to make split-second decisions of life or death.

The vast majority of the time we get it right. However, when a life, any life, is lost, the circumstances should be fully and thoroughly investigated and, if warranted, justice should be pursued in accordance with that guiding document of the greatest nation on Earth, the United States Constitution.

The level of violence aimed at law enforcement officers has escalated in every region of our country. It is

being fanned by the seething hatred of a small but vocal few who reject the principles of our free society. The violence will not end until the rhetoric does. Citizens from all walks of life must stand up and reject the use of violence, terror and hate as an instrument of social change. That is not who we are as Americans.

The Fraternal Order of Police is dedicated to supporting and training our members so they can effectively do their jobs and in the process make sure all citizens, including police officers, can enjoy life and all that matters to each and every one of us.

The Indians struggled in that area in the first few games. The countless hours of hard work improving passing and defense finally showed results when Minooka dominated Southwest Prairie Conference rival Plainfield North on Thursday, 25-21, 25-17.

Since the Indians played strong in the back row, their hard-swinging offense was able to thrive, with sophomore Ally Papesh leading the way with 13 kills.

“We’re really focusing on defense and serve-receive,” Papesh said. “We have a lot of firepower in the front row, but it won’t come together unless we have a pass.”

Minooka, which limited Plainfield North to four aces while tallying four of its own, passed in its system throughout, which allowed the Indians to run a spread-out offense.

The Tigers targeted Ginger Perinar 21 times, but the senior outside hitter had one of her best passing performances and consistently got the ball to setter Brooklyn Bachmann.

Papesh and senior libero Maddie Alessio (no errors) each delivered seven in-system passes.

“I just tried to come out and do the very best that I can, not maybe go up for the kill every time but find a spot that is open and I think that’s what did it today,” said Papesh, who openly respects both Perinar and Lindroth.

With the strong defense, Central was able to limit Lindroth to seven kills.

The loss of that leadership hit hard.

“We have to focus on bettering the team every single day at practice,” Lindroth said. “As a group of nine seniors, we’re probably the youngest team we’ve had mentally. It’s very different.

We’re working with what we have. Our expectations don’t change, but we’re such a young group. We don’t have the biggest powerhouse team like we’ve had in the past years. All we can do is better our skills, and our priority is going to be first contact.

“All we can learn from this game is how we can react in pressure situations.

From being on the varsity team for four years, Lauren Robeck and I have adapted to all the pressure. We’re trying to spread that to the rest of the team.”

North will face another high-pressure situation Tuesday when it plays Plainfield Central at home.

Minooka will go on the road Tuesday to play another conference foe, Plainfield East.

“When we huddled after the game, I asked what wins,” Prosek said. “They all yelled defense and serve receive. I could have the all-American hitters, but you can’t do it without those two things. I think that they’re getting it. The last few games, we’ve been getting better and better.”

LOCKPORT – Thursday’s girls volleyball match between Morris and Lockport was a case of two first-year coaches who were still looking for who can do what in certain situations.

While consistency has been a problem for both sides so far this season, Morris coach Taylor Lafond walked away pleased with her group’s effort, while Lockport’s Nick Mraz was disappointed after another case of too many mistakes from his young squad.

Morris took control midway through the opening game and led throughout most of the finale to capture a 25-18, 25-22 nonconference road victory.

“This was good coming off of a tough game with LaSalle-Peru,” Lafond said. “Our blocking wasn’t there and we missed a lot of serves against them, so it was nice to come back and play like this. We worked on serving and serve-receive and trying to get the ball up to our setter so that they weren’t running behind the 10-foot line. We want to mix it up and move everyone around so that we can give Kaylin (Korte) as many kills as possible.

“It was good to see the girls talking a little bit more on the court, since we’ve kind of been pushing communication and just working together as a team.

They were hustling their butts of tonight and that was nice to see. I’ve been trying to find the groove and the girls are trying to find the groove with me. The girls mesh well and they’re a good group. They’re kind of feeding off of each other and it’s good to see their personalities kind of come out.”

Things started out well enough for the Porters (1-8), who used two kills and an ace from JoDee Kovanda (six kills, seven assists, six digs) to grab an early 6-3 advantage.

But Morris (4-7) moved in front for good in the game after scoring 11 of the next 13 points. Kaylin Korte (12 kills, 10 digs) had two kills, and Janelle

Brehm (five kills, three aces, two digs) added two aces and a kill during the spurt to help their team take a 14-8 lead.

Lockport got to within two points on four different occasions, with the last three of those coming on kills from Serene Jones (11 digs), Kovanda and Jasmine Raudys. But the visitors wrapped things up by scoring six of the final seven points in the game. Addison Polite (nine assists, three digs) got a kill and Ryan Friend recorded a block to wrap things up.

Things started better for Morris in the last game after Veronica Johnson (seven blocks, two kills) had a pair of blocks and a kill to get things going while Friend and Korte each added a kill to help their team grab a 9-5 lead.

The Porters hurt their cause during that stretch and also throughout the match by making too many serving errors, which was particularly troublesome for their new coach.

“We had 13 miss-serves and we also didn’t pass well, passing under a two, and that’s a recipe for disaster,” Mraz said. “When you give them 13 of the 50 points you dig yourself into a hole and you can’t beat a good team like that. We kept it close, but when you miss serves, it’s a momentum killer. Whatever you have going for you immediately goes flat.

“Eventually the girls just have to learn how to win.

Against Naperville North, we were up 18-15 in both sets. But we’re just young and we’re not closing it out because the confidence isn’t there. The skill and the talent are there, but it’s just a mental block. We’re there, but we’re making all of these errors.

If you clean up half of them, we might be 7-2.”

Morris held a safe lead throughout the rest of the match but Lockport made a late run to close to within 24-22 after an ace from Shae O’Neil. The visitors also got 10 assists and six digs from Ashley Hood, while Cassie Schremser had seven digs for the Porters.

Anderson revises bucket list with Lockard win SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Labor Day in the racing world is all about tradition.

NASCAR returned to its tradition of racing at Darlington for the Southern 500. The NHRA invaded the Racing Capital of the World for the U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis, and for the 35th year, local midget racing honored one of its legends with the running of the Bob Lockard Memorial.

Dating back to 1981 at Joliet Memorial Stadium, Hall of Famer Dennis Devea etched his name in the books as the first winner of the Lockard Memorial.

Bob Lockard, former mechanic and car owner in the Joliet area, was iconic in the Midwest. Known for his beautiful red and white No. 69, Lockard won numerous races and championships around the Midwest, notably in the infamous Lockard badger.

To be named on the list of winners is something every midget driver from the area wants.

Saturday night, after trying for nearly 20 years, Joliet native and three-time D’Arcy GMC STARS National Midget champion Jim Anderson added his name to the list.

Running a part-time schedule in 2015, Anderson has been just short of dominant in the

Billy Hulbert put the pressure on Anderson for most of the race, but was unable to get the one spot he needed for his

third win of the season.

Points leader Brad Greenup extended his lead with another top-five finish.

In other STARS divisions, Max Poszgai added another victory to his credit after Scott Koerner failed Illini Racing Series post-race tech.

Koerner led wire-to-wire with no pressure from the rest of the field.

Darren Ihrke, on the other hand, had pressure all race long from 2010 Classic Modified champion Mike Anderson in the Classic Modified division. Ihrke went to pick up the win after being called with one lap to go when Anderson took a hard hit to the front straight wall trying for the lead.

Jordan Caskey collected yet another Midwest Legacy Series victory, while Jamie Domski closed the gap over CSR SuperCup points leader Amanda Bohn with his victory.

The D’Arcy GMC STARS Series will have two weeks off before returning to Grundy County Speedway for the season finale “Alex Pruett Memorial presented by 3 Wide Life” on Sept. 26.

Can Brad Greenup collect his first career National Midget championship or will Mr. Consistency, Tyler Baran, knock him off the top? Gates open at 4:30 p.m. with the first race at 6.

From what we have seen so far, you get the feeling the 2015 Tigers (2-0) and Knights (1-1) are strong enough to hang with their opponents. And if a couple things break the right way, they could come away with victories.

But again, while victories would be huge for multiple reasons, including the playoff boost they would provide, they are not absolutely necessary at this juncture.

In the case of Joliet West, if its defense does reasonably well slowing down the Griffins’ attack, and if the Alex Tibble-led offense, featuring receivers Xavier Smith and Kevon Dorris, can get decent production against East’s

powerful defense, that will be a psychological boost.

As for Lincoln-Way Central, if the Knights’ defense can deal with Lincoln-Way West’s large and talented offensive line, and if the offense can put points on the board against linebacker Trey Telez and company, that would do wonders for their confidence.

When your goal is to take the next step, you want to show you belong on the field with the best. Joliet West and Lincoln-Way Central are in position to demonstrate how far they have come. Let’s see how they do.

Kettman immortalized the Newells in a tribute painting with Grant Wood’s “American Gothic” as the inspiration. The painting was Kettman’s wedding present to the couple, who were married Aug. 29 at Ellis House and Equestrian Center in Minooka.

“When we opened it, we were so surprised,” Katie said.

In addition to recreating Katie and Ryan’s likenesses, Kettman personalized the painting by including various details that are important to them. For instance, their two dogs – Tillie and Casey – are featured, as well as their cat, Chevy, Katie said.

The house design down to the bay windows is based on the Newell home, and the roof is inscribed with dates that are significant to them, Kettman said.

The painting also commemorates Katie and Ryan being volunteer firefighters for the Lisbon Seward Volunteer Fire Department, Katie said.

Katie’s birthday is added to her dress, Ryan’s birth date is inscribed in the pitchfork and some of the messages are well-hidden, Katie said.

“We’re very glad he included so many special things in there,” she said. “We thought it was awesome.”

Katie said she and Ryan plan to hang the painting in the bedroom because the living room has a firefighter theme.

“Although everyone won’t be able to see it, it goes along with our theme of just being together,” Katie said.

Kettman has created a custom painting as a wedding gift for family and friends, but those pieces usually are standard portraits, he said. In fact, Kettman thought Katie would choose a traditional portrait when he presented the idea to her.

“I asked Katie, ‘Do you want something normal or something more bizarre, far out, weird?’ ” Kettman said. “She went the weird route.”

Kettman already had painted a simpler version of American Gothic, substituting himself and Maryann for the figures of the dentist and his daughter, Kettman said.

With Katie’s cowboy-themed wedding in mind, Kettman

thought a variation of American Gothic would be a perfect present.

Even though the Newells knew Kettman was painting something for them, Kettman kept the particulars a secret until Katie and Ryan opened the gift at their reception.

Only one person saw the painting in advance and that was Maryann.

“Everyone knew something was up,” Kettman said, “but they didn’t know what it was.”

Ever since Kettman began painting in 2008, he has experimented with unusual means to express his creativity, working mostly in acrylics.

For instance, Kettman said,

he has painted six different portraits – one subject being Gene Simmons of the rock band KISS – on six different grains of rice.

Another was Maryann.

“It’s only a quarter-inch in height,” Kettman said.

Kettman said he also has created life-size reproductions of the Beatles’ “Abbey Road” and “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” albums, which he showed at a Beatles festival in Chicago.

He also has done an image of Streator native Clyde W. Tombaugh – who discovered Pluto. Kettman is collecting signatures on a petition, in the hopes the U.S. Postal Service will issue it as a postage stamp.

Each September, citizens of New Lenox and Will County come together for a festival of sharing and caring. Hundreds of volunteers from over 160 organizations will unite to offer compassionate community service by donating their time, talents, and treasures to the cause.

On Friday, September 11, the Patriot Day Ceremony will take place at 9:11 am at the Village Commons in New Lenox. Afterwards, a Job & Resource Fair will be held in the New Lenox Village Hall from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm.

If the symptom you have could be a drug side effect, check with your doctor.

It can be frightening to read a list of the side effects of a new medicine.

More than a few of my patients have immediately assumed that they would suffer from all of them.

Is there anything I can do to reduce the risk of side effects?

Dear Reader : My colleague, Dr. Gordon Schiff, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, says it well: “All drugs have effects – the ones we want and the ones we don’t.

The unwanted effects are known as side effects.”

When you take a drug, it is distributed throughout your body, to all your organs and tissues.

The drug may do different things in those different organs.

Take aspirin, for example. Its anti-inflammatory action may suppress your arthritis.

But it inhibits the body’s production of the chemicals that protect your stomach lining and help your blood clot. As a result, indigestion and bleeding are side effects of aspirin use.

Once a drug is on the market, its manufacturer must inform physicians and consumers of every possible side effect.

This results in long lists printed in microscopic type.

For over-the-counter drugs, the list is included in the box or printed on the label.

There are some things you can do to reduce your risk of medication side effects.

For example: • Ask for a drug that’s been on the market for a while. The information on side effects of a newly released medication often is based on clinical trials involving a few hundred people.

An older drug is likely to have been used by hundreds of thousands of people. That experience can reveal addi-

Dear Abby: Last year, during her required physical for college, my 19-year-old daughter, “Lacey,” was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

She is in denial and hasn’t seen a doctor since. She doesn’t take her medications and refuses to change her diet or exercise. She also is obese.

When I try to discuss this with her, she gets angry and storms away. Her school is three hours away, and I’m worried something terrible will have to happen to make her get serious. She’s in that “invincible/know-it-all/I don’t care” teenage phase of her life.

There already are signs her diabetes is out of control – headaches, vision changes, foot sores, numbness in her hands and irritability. Any advice before it’s too late? –

There may be many reasons Lacey doesn’t want to deal with her diagnosis right now. With starting college, meeting new friends and navigating the transition to adulthood, she has a lot she’d rather focus on, and issues that seem more immediately relevant. It also may be scary to think about her health, the possible consequences of diabetes and all that managing her condition entails.

People Lacey’s age don’t like to be told what to do or be nagged. So approach the issue as a conversation and demonstrate an interest in her perspective and goals.

This can happen in bits and pieces over an extended period of time, as she comes to see you as a supportive resource.

You might start by saying, “What did you think of what ‘Dr. Jones’ said about Type 2 diabetes?” Then listen. Resist the urge to tell her to do something. Instead, reflect back on what she

Once you get her talking, listen carefully for any signs she’s considering changes (eating more healthfully, joining a gym, trying medication suggested by her doctor) and show an interest in her thoughts, such as, “So you’re thinking about eating healthier? What have you been doing?” Offer concrete support, such as offering to help cover the cost of the gym, looking up diabetes-friendly recipes or helping her connect with a doctor close to her school.

Tell her you’ll support her any way you can.

In the meantime, engage in behaviors Lacey needs to adopt, i.e., learning about diabetes and maintaining healthy eating and regular exercise habits. When she’s home, set a good example.

Change isn’t easy.

Progress often isn’t a direct path. Remember, diabetes is just one part of her life. Let Lacey know she’s valued as a person and capable of taking care of herself. But ultimately, the decision to do that must be hers.
