By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After some fits and starts because of the state’s budget impasse, renovations are underway at the Illinois Youth Center in Joliet as part of the state’s attempt to comply with a court-ordered overhaul of its mental health care system.

Subcontractors have been on-site in recent weeks tearing down barbed wire around the property’s perimeter and working on other sections of the project, said Mike Serena, recording secretary for Laborers Local 75, which is working under general contractor Blinderman Construction Company.

A detailed scope of ongoing work is unclear. Illinois Department of Corrections spokeswoman Nicole Wilson declined to comment Wednesday.

“Due to pending litigation, we have no comment at this time,” Wilson stated in an email.

IDOC is under pressure from a federal lawsuit that challenges the conditions of the state agency’s prison system for people with serious mental illnesses. In an attempt to settle the case, IDOC agreed last year with a court-appointed

monitor to turn Joliet’s vacant 484-bed facility – and three others statewide – into treatment centers for severely mentally ill inmates.

Harold Hirshman, an attorney representing the plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit, said the two parties are set to go to trial in January for a still-unresolved issue relating to hospital care for severely mentally ill inmates.

In an amended complaint filed Sept. 1, Hirshman stated IDOC sends mentally ill inmates to segregation for months and years at a time and

inmates under the state’s care are “chronically under-diagnosed and under-treated.”

In the complaint, Hirshman calls on the federal judge to enter a preliminary injunction, directing IDOC to provide mental health training for correctional staff, require a detailed mental health screening for inmates upon admission, set time limits for segregation and have independent reviewers perform regular performance evaluations of mental health services, among other actions.

CHICAGO – A Joliet-based National Guardsman and his cousin may plead guilty to plotting to attack a military facility.

Hasan Edmonds and his cousin, Jonas Edmonds, both of Aurora, had a status hearing Wednesday before a federal judge, according to U.S. Attorney spokesman Joseph Fitzpatrick. Another hearing has been scheduled for Oct. 13.

“The [defense attorneys] discussed the possibility of

scheduling another hearing for a change-of-plea on that date,” Fitzpatrick said.

Hasan Edmonds is an Illinois Army National Guard soldier who primarily trained at the Joliet Armory. A federal complaint states Jonas Edmonds planned to attack an Illinois military facility while Hasan Edmonds, who was a member of Golf Company 634th Brigade Support Battalion based in Joliet, would join Islamic State fighters.

The targeted location was only identified in the complaint as a U.S. military facility in

northern Illinois. The Illinois National Guard has not specified where the alleged targeted military installation was, but a spokesman has said Edmonds primarily trained in Joliet.

Both men were arrested in March and have pleaded not guilty. Conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison and a $250,000 fine, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

About $17 million has been secured for IDOC to convert the Joliet center on McDonough Street into a facility for severely mentally ill inmates.

State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Joliet, said Wednesday without a state budget in place, it’s a safe bet that operational funding won’t be available in early 2016, when the facility is expected to open.

“As far as it opening up, it’s safe to say that nothing is going to happen until we pass a budget,” Walsh Jr. said. “Due to the court’s decision, we need to come up with revenue to fund [the facility] and get inmates the treatment they need.”

According to IDOC, there were about 10,910 people on the IDOC mental health caseload in 2014, meaning they received ongoing services for mental health. A little more than 4,660 were considered seriously mentally ill.

Supervisor wants inside look at park conditions, operations

bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Township Supervisor Dan Vera hopes to get the go-ahead next week to take a closer look at buildings and operations at Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park before the township makes a decision on whether to take it over.

Vera said he was invited to meet with the Joliet City Council on Monday during a closed session to discuss township plans for the park.

He said he is looking for authorization to bring contractors onto the property so the township board can make a decision at its Oct. 20 meeting whether to pursue at least partial park ownership.

“That is the next step – to go over there and look at the condition of both buildings,” Vera said. “We want to shadow how it operates.”

Township interest in the park surfaced publicly in August and has worried some residents in the neighborhood.

They question what could happen to the park, which, in addition to having a theater and band shell, contains plaques commemorating the site’s role in the 19th century origins of Joliet.

Vera said he has been talking with city officials off and on for five years since Joliet, which owns the park, began to cut funding. He said he rejuvenated the discussions in March.

He said the township, which now sponsors Concerts on the Hill in the park for the month of August, would keep the park as is while bringing back major festivals. Those outdoor events disappeared when the city cut funding. The township also could take over responsibility for building repairs.

Turk, the council liaison to Bicentennial Park, said he needs to see “a clear plan” and added the city, too, could begin funding events at the park.

“With the right planning, we could bring some of these festivities back,” he said.

Vera is asking the city to contribute $100,000 a year for 10 years even if the township takes control of the park.

He wants a partnership with the city, but the township would need ownership interest in the park, he said.

There has been some suspicion, however, about a change in park ownership.

“We have about 300 signatures on our petition saying we want to keep Bicentennial Park in city possession,” said Candace Johnson, co-president of the St. John’s Neighborhood Association. The park is in the St. John’s Neighborhood.

was started after Vera came to an association meeting in August and discussed his plans for the park. Johnson was not convinced, and she said others were not either.

“We have not heard a real legitimate reason on why they want the park,” she said.

She said the township could bring back events by sponsoring them. Other organizations hold events at Bicentennial Park and rent out the facility.

The Spanish Community Center in August held its Family Fiesta, a three-day fundraiser, at the park.

Joliet school invites grandparents to visit More online

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Marcelo Perez received a special visitor – all the way from Florida – Wednesday in his kindergarten class: his grandfather.

Santos Felix visited his grandson as part of Grandparents Day at Forest Park Individual Education School, a magnet school within Joliet Public Schools District 86. Felix was one of dozens of grandparents who came to the school to spend time with their grandchildren and to learn more about Forest Park.

As part of one activity, Felix sat with Marcelo in class and they drew colorful pictures of each other. Felix held up one picture to his daughter, Vanessa Felix, who came to school Wednesday as well, and they both chuckled.

“I went here when I was a kid,” Vanessa Felix said. “I like [the school] very much. It’s more involved.”

Forest Park staff held its second annual Grandparents Day as a way to incorporate grandparents into the school community. Last year’s event had about 60 grandparents – along with aunts and uncles – who came with many questions about Forest Park, Principal Jacob Darley said.

“One of the reasons I looked forward to retiring was so I could spend time with my

grandkids,” he said.

Before grandparents met their grandchildren in class Wednesday, Darley gave them a “crash course” on what makes Forest Park’s education unique.

The school is based on the motivation and learning philosophy of psychiatrist Alfred Adler, as well as psychologist

Raymond Corsini’s four “Rs”: responsibility, respectfulness, resourcefulness and responsiveness.

The school’s education is focused on “building internal motivation,” Darley said. He said Forest Park is not about rewarding good behavior with prizes.

“Behaving is expected. We

do not give them a sticker for getting an A+ on a test. You got an A+ on the test. What’s the prize then? You’re smarter. You learned something,” he said.

He said teachers at Forest Park have the mindset of treating children as capable of making decisions and improving behavior.

Darley encouraged grandparents to use some of the same neutral disciplinary measures teachers use at the school. Misbehaving students are required to leave the classroom for a short period of time to think about their actions instead of being yelled at or threatened with phone calls to parents.

“This is something that if you start doing at your home, mom and dad start doing it at their home, and we’re all doing it at school, your grandchildren are going to learn real quick that you and I and them are all on the same team, and we mean business,” Darley said.

State Rep. Mark Batinick talks budget at Plainfield meeting

At the meeting, Batinick announced he and state Rep. Jack Franks, D-Marengo, are proposing working on a two-year budget instead of a nine-month budget.

“It would certainly provide stability to the state, third-par-

ty service providers and a lot of other people,” he said about his possible budget fix.

Batinick said another benefit of the two-year budget plan is that it would take the 2016 election out of the process.

“What happened in 2014, there either needed to be cuts made or taxes raised to balance the budget,” he said. “Nobody had the will to do that before an election year.”

When asked about the prospects of a budget resolution for the fiscal year that started July 1, and about funding for social programming, Batinick wasn’t optimistic, and said social pro-

grams “have been yo-yoed for years.”

“We need to get the priorities straight,” he said, adding a two-year budget could put spending back into education and social services.

Batinick also said he will release his own pension proposal Thursday.

Village officials were asked to update residents on several areas of development.

Village Planner Michael Garrigan said renovation of the old Trolley Barn is in full effect, with steel fabrication finishing

up and high hopes for a restaurant or brewpub to move into the location.

Garrigan also reviewed progress on a Route 30 tax-increment financing district eligibility study and commercial development on the Route 59 corridor.

One resident asked about a potential Costco on Route 30.

Village staff is rumored to be working on a new Costco anchoring the Boulevard property at the north corner of the Route 30 and Interstate 55 interchange.

The property’s listing on Loopnet.com, a commercial

real estate website, lists Costco as the major anchor for the development. The listing was last updated more than a year ago.

“I can say we are working with the owner of that property,” he said.

Garrigan said the village isn’t at the point where it could release information on prospective tenants.

“Just so you know, at the Cruise Night there was a Costco representative there who was telling me they’re building a Costco here,” the resident said, followed by laughter throughout the room.

Suspect sketch released after trail assault

ROCKDALE – The Illinois State Police has released a sketch of the man suspected in Sunday’s sex assault on a jogger along the Illinois & Michigan Canal trail in Rockdale.

Police said the attack occurred in the late morning, when a 19-year-old woman was running on the path and a man came out of the bushes and sexually assaulted her.

The suspect is described by police as a Hispanic man in his late 20s to early 30s with a heavy accent. He is between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 10 inches tall with black hair, and was wearing dark sweatpants, a white T-shirt and a long-sleeved orange shirt.

Juvencio Jaquez, 48, was pronounced dead at 2:22 p.m.

Monday at Rockford Memorial Hospital, according to a department news release.

Jaquez was on LaMoille Road, north of Woodhaven Lakes Campground, about 5 p.m. Saturday when he went off a curve and into a field. He was not wearing a helmet, the release stated.

QUICK NEWS ELWOOD – As part of the 25th annual Elwood Community Days, the village of Elwood is hosting a Car Show and Cruise on Route 66 on Sept. 11.

Classic cars and spectators will meet at Tyler Park, located at the corner of Mississippi Avenue and Chicago Street in Elwood.

The gates open at 4 p.m. with voting getting under way at 6 p.m. First, second and third place trophies are announced at 6:30 p.m., followed by a parade

lap cruise down the Return Road at Route 66 Raceway.

Registration for the car show is free, but there is a $10 fee for test and tune spectator admission.

All classic car makes and models are welcome at the event. Spectators are encouraged to attend, but must register to take part in the cruise.

Lincoln-Way officials hold fiscal 2016 budget hearing

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way officials unveiled the fiscal 2016 budget at a hearing Wednesday that board members will consider approving Thursday but many attendees still had questions on past financial questions.

The 2015-16 budget came attached with a Deficit Reduction Plan that outlines how the financially troubled school district will close the gap on its budget deficit and build up depleted savings. Lincoln-Way plans to close one of its four high schools – North – in an effort to reduce its deficit, as required by the Illinois State Board of Education.

North will close fall 2016 and district officials expect a balanced budget at the end of that fiscal year.

Many of about 30 parents and residents who came to the budget hearing still were questioning district officials on several financial decisions, includ-

ing the decision to close North.

One question was why the school district filed balanced budgets from 2011 to 2013 even though the budgets had deficits. Ronald Sawin, assistant superintendent of business, who oversaw the hearing, said he didn’t control the budget during those years.

“So who made the budgets before you and [Superintendent Scott] Tingley? [Lawrence] Wyllie by himself?” one audience member asked, referring to the former superintendent who retired in 2013. Wyllie was one of the earliest proponents for the construction of North and West high schools.

“Yes,” Sawin said.

The audience then directed questions to any of the school board members present the years the budgets were passed balanced. Board members Christopher McFadden, Ronald Lullo and Christine Glatz attended the hearing.

Glatz said past budgets were passed based on the information presented to the board.

“In going through this process now and as many of you know, I’ve been on the board a number of years, I’m learning that the former administration’s accounting practices were not very strong,” Glatz said. “We’re going to improve that. We’re going to work on that.”

The 2015-16 budget reflects estimated overall revenues of $101.4 million, $106.6 million in expenses and a $5.2 million deficit, Sawin said. The budget also includes a $4 million “inter-fund” transfer. Because of the education fund had a deficit of about $3.9 million, district officials want to reduce it with money from the building fund, Sawin said.

Lincoln-Way would expect to receive about $5.1 million in general state aid and $1.7 million in mandated categorical funding – for items such as special education – but Sawin said district officials are estimating those revenues conservatively because of past decreases in state funding.

District 86 picks search firm to help find superintendent

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Ray & Associates Inc. will help Joliet Public Schools District 86 search for its next superintendent.

The District 86 Board of School Inspectors approved Sept. 2 the contract for the Iowa-based search firm and plan to develop a timeline for the search. They also plan to be interviewed by a consultant from the firm to set search priorities, goals and objectives.

“We will have community input through focus groups,” board President Gwendolyn Ulmer said.

Board inspectors began the process of finding another district leader after Superintendent Charles Coleman announced his retirement in

a June 10 letter. He will retire July 1.

Coleman, who has more than 34 years of experience as an educator, said his retirement is a “family decision.”

District 86 will pay $18,000 as a base fee for Ray & Associates’ services, according to the contract. The fee will be paid in three installments: the first due after board approval of the search timeline, the second due at mid-point of the search and the final due at the month the superintendent is officially hired.

Ray & Associates was chosen from six companies the board reviewed since July.

The search firm was picked because it had 40 years of experience, an outstanding reputation and national resources, Ulmer said.

Board approval of the agreement was postponed at an Aug. 12 meeting after board inspector Jeffrey Pritz raised questions about the cost of travel expenses for a consultant from Ray & Associates.

The contract states expenses such has travel, lodging, meals, postage, fax, photocopying, long-distance telephone calls and other search-related costs will be reimbursed by district officials.

According to the agreement, Ray & Associates acknowledged the district wants to keep expenses down for the search. A consultant who lives outside Illinois can fly to Chicago from St. Louis, where tickets run as low as $99 a flight. The consultant can also drive and stay with family instead of at a hotel.

1990 tornado exhibit at Joliet museum features storm chaser

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Joliet Area Historical Museum’s special exhibit on the 1990 Plainfield tornado will have the added attraction Sunday of a storm chaser.

The exhibit, “Eight Minutes in August: The 1990 Tornado,” has proven a popular draw and at times an emotional experience for museum-goers with vivid memories of the tornado, said Greg Peerbolte, executive director at the museum.

“People have been very moved,” Peerbolte said. “You ask people what they think about the exhibit, and they’ll pour their hearts out to you.”

The program Sunday is the first of three that will accompany the exhibit, which runs through Nov. 20.

Danny Neal of Illinois Storm Chasers will present “On the Road with Illinois Storm Chasers” at 2 p.m. in the museum’s Caterpillar Auditorium.

Neal has a large following, and registration for the program has been good, Peerbolte said.

Neal will return Nov. 5 for a presentation titled “Are You Ready?” On Oct. 18, Jeremy Hylka, director of the Joliet Weather Center, will present “Then and Now: Remember August 28th.”

The programs fit with the blend of history and science that is on display with “Eight Minutes in August.”

Panels include a map showing the path of the tornado, its changing tornado and where it touched down.

Two video kiosks show a segment of the storm filmed in DeKalb before the tornado was created and the aftermath of the destruction. A largescreen TV is used to show a WBBM-Channel 2 program on the tornado.

Helland said the most disturbing factor in many of the drug overdose cases is that several of the victims have no

criminal history and have had no police contact.

The coroner’s office, the sheriff’s office and the state’s attorney’s office work together with the No Tolerance Task Force to get information to the community about the dangers of heroin.

The NTTF will host its third heroin forum from 6 to 8 p.m.

Oct. 26 at Morris Community High School, 1000 Union St. in Morris.

Helland said education and increased awareness about heroin use is what will help address it.

MORRIS – As the year goes on, the number of heroin overdoses in Grundy County has been increasing, according to Grundy County Coroner John Callahan.

In the last 45 days, there have been three heroin overdoses in Grundy County and at least one more Grundy County resident dying of an overdose in another county.

“When you look at the overall numbers, they are on an incline,” Callahan said. “Over the years, we’ve had a fairly consistent number of cases.”

He said the reason for the increase can be everything from a bad batch of heroin, to heroin mixed with other narcotics, to a person who has been through rehab and falls off the wagon using more than their body can handle.

He said it isn’t surprising when the cost of a hit of heroin is less than a pack of cigarettes.

Callahan said in a news release that overdose death investigations are time consuming

and the actual cause of death is not known or confirmed for two to three weeks after the death.

During that period, there are many aspects of death investigation taking place. All of the results of the investigation go hand in hand with the final toxicology results, which is then confirmed with autopsy findings.

Grundy County Sheriff Kevin Callahan said the number of heroin arrests also has increased.

“We are combating it through patrol, making street-level arrests on a daily basis,” the sheriff said. “We have zero tolerance for the drug.”

Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland said there are more controlled substance arrests with other police agencies as well, such as the Morris Police Department.

He attributed some of the arrests to the addition of a K-9 officer at the Morris Police Department. The state’s attorney’s office purchased Talon, an Illinois State Police K-9 officer for Morris last year. Talon, along

The crash, which included a vehicle flipped over and resting on its roof, blocked

traffic in all directions and caused significant traffic backups, but was cleared by the afternoon, according to a Joliet Fire Department spokesman.

The spokesman reported one occupant of each vehicle was taken to the hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Village Board OKs up to $10M in bonds Residents worried about industrial noise, pollution

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – The Channahon Village gave authority Tuesday to staff to issue up to $10 million in general obligation bonds in the near future.

A portion of the bonds – about $1.5 million, according to Village Administrator Tom Durkin – will be used to refinance existing bonds from 2005 and 2006. The refinancing could save the village $45,000 with a lower interest rate.

About $4.5 million from the bonds to be issued will go to finance major infrastructure changes at the interchange at Interstate 55 and Bluff Road.

Giving the authority to issue the bonds is the next step in the process of upgrading the site, Durkin said, which will bring village water east past the interstate to accommodate industry. Other issues, such as zoning matters and an annexation agreement must also be reached.

The money that will be used to finance the infrastructure

will help Industrial Developments International develop 118 acres of farmland at the northeast corner of the interchange. IDI has the land under contract and plans to construct a more than 2 million-squarefoot industrial and logistics center.

The village’s project may include extension of public utilities, sidewalks, street lighting, traffic signals, improvements to roadways and associated professional services. The upgrades will serve the IDI property and 350 acres to the north, Durkin said after the meeting.

The various taxing bodies of the land, including Channahon’s school districts, park district and fire protection district, will abate to the village a portion of their property taxes from the development. That money will be used to pay off the bonds.

The village will have until 2034 to pay off the bonds, but Durkin said the hope is the development takes off and the bonds can be paid back much sooner.

Residents concerned

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, several residents asked trustees and staff for help with a noise and pollution situation they fear is returning to their neighborhood.

A new business will lease the industrial site at 23348 Route 6, east of I-55. Residents who live on South Frances Way and South Michael Drive told trustees they lived for years with loud noise, water runoff and groundwater pollution from former lessee ConWay Central Express. The site has been unoccupied about a year, the residents said. The new lessee, New England Motor Freight, according to the residents, will begin business there soon, and they don’t want to see the situation revert to previous conditions.

Fred Henze, of South Frances Way, said the former occupant slammed doors to the loading docks, blew forklift horns and made other loud noises day and night.

“The noise would start at 4 or 5 in the morning,” Henze said.

Mexican Independence Day Parade will be Saturday

Both the Mexican and United States national anthems are played at the coronation. The queen and her court then join the parade, Franchini said.

This will be the 67th year that a queen will be crowned in Joliet for Mexican Independence Day, she said.

Franchini is a member of the Fiestas Patrias Committee, which organizes Mexican Independence Day events to foster understanding of Mexican culture and history.

Mexican Independence Day is Sept. 16. The Joliet festivities typically are held on a Saturday close to Mexican Independence Day.

16 Defense: Autopsy photos too graphic for trial in murder

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Defense attorneys want autopsy photos kept out of a Crest Hill man’s murder trial next week.

Jerry M. Nichols, 64, is accused of stomping his wife, Diane, to death after running over her with a car at their home in January 2013.

“These [autopsy] photos are so prejudicial to be shown to the jury. The brain. The heart.

That will stay with regular people. They won’t forget that,” Nichols’ lawyer Michael Ettinger told Judge Dave Carlson on Wednesday.

Nichols is scheduled to face trial Monday. On Jan. 26, 2013, according to authorities, he struck his wife with his car in their garage in the 1600 block of Arborvitae Circle and called 911. Paramedics arrived to find him stomping on his wife’s head, according to testimony at earlier hearings.

Ettinger has previously said Nichols’ hitting his wife

with the car was an accident that triggered the Vietnam veteran’s post-traumatic stress disorder, which led to the stomping. Will County Assistant State’s Attorney John Connor has argued computer search history showed Nichols ordered ingredients for poison in the months before his wife’s death after researching toxicity and autopsies.

Connor said Wednesday the photos will be necessary because the pathologist who performed Diane Nichols’ autopsy and a medical examiner who will testify for the defense have submitted conflicting reports.

“The pathologist said injuries to the head and neck were inflicted during the stomping other witnesses will testify occurred and the defense expert believes they occurred when the car struck [Diane Nichols],” Connor said.

Carlson said he will review the 79 photos taken during the autopsy before jurors are chosen Monday morning.

OBITUARIES BERNADETTE C. AYERS Bernadette C. Ayers (nee Stewart), age 76, of Plainfield, passed away peacefully Monday, September 7, 2015 at home surrounded by her loving family.

Born May 18, 1939 in Chicago, she grew up in Visitation Parish, Chicago, and was a graduate of Holy Family Academy in Beaverville, IL. She retired from Jewel Foods on Larkin Avenue after 20 years of service as a cashier. While her children were in school, she coached basketball and volleyball at St. Mary Immaculate School. She was a member of St. Mary Immaculate Parish since 1972.

Bernadette was a loving and caring wife, mother, and grandmother who will be remembered for her selflessness and helping others.

She was a wonderful homemaker whose cooking and baking will be missed. She loved nature, music, playing cards and bingo, dancing, and especially playing with her grandchildren. The world will never be the same without her.

PETER L. BATES Peter (Pete) Learnard Bates, age 84, passed away at his home on September 4, 2015.

Peter was born July 26, 1931 in Joliet.

Peter was preceded in death by his wife, Connie (nee Haynie); siblings, Bennitt and Anne Bates; and his parents, Elbert Eric Sr. and Ruth L. Bates of Joliet.

Pete was a lifelong Joliet resident attending Farragut Grade School

and Joliet Township High School.

He attended Indiana University graduating in 1953, with both a degree in Business Administration and a commission in the U.S. Army.

Peter served in the Army for 2 years including an 18 month tour in Germany. Pete met his future bride Connie at Indiana University and they married in 1954.

Upon his return to Joliet from the service, he joined the family business - Bates Insurance Agency, continuing until he retired in 1995 to support his wife in her battle with cancer. Peter lost Connie, the love of his life and his biggest supporter, in 1996.

Peter’s involvement in the Joliet community started at an early age.

In 1945, as a newspaper boy for the Herald News, he earned the 4 star award for war stamp sales presented to him by the Treasury Department.

As an adult, Peter was active in supporting youth activities such as the Boy Scouts, and YMCA Indian Guides as well as leadership positions in Young Republicans, the University Club and the YMCA City Club. For the past 40 years he was a trustee of the Lambert Fund for Children.

Pete passed away peacefully and on his own terms with family by his side when his body could no longer keep up with his spirit. He was an avid genealogist and reveled in the chase for family history. He will be remembered for his sense of humor, being an excellent father and role model, a loyal friend, and an honest and fair business person with solid standing in the community. He was always there when needed and through the years the team of Pete and Connie built a great family.

The family would like to recognize Bill and Sharon Lauer, Larry and Lynda Scheuber, and Martha Bates who are among the many special people who have always been there to supported Dad and our family.

JAMES H. BRADLEY James Henry Bradley “Brad”, passed away peacefully the morning of September 8, 2015 at 94 years.

A lifelong resident of Joliet and Lockport.

He was a WWII Veteran, spending his tour of duty on the ship, Arundel, as part of the Coast Guard Greenland Patrol. Besides being self-employed, he was employed at General Motors Corp. Electro-Motive Division for 40 and a half years.

Active member of both Joliet and Chicago Area Theater Organ Enthusiasts; Illinois Live Steamers and Chicago Model Engine Association; honored as a lifelong volunteer at the Rialto Theater in Joliet, where he also was acknowledged for his extensive work on the Barton Grande Theater Organ.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Madeline (McKeand); two daughters, Carolyn Tindal and Susan Bradley; a grandson, Michael (Courtney) Tindal; a sister-in-law, Myrtle Lakotich and was known as Uncle Brad to many nieces and nephews.

Donald L. Cordano, age 81, a lifetime Joliet resident, passed away peacefully Monday, September 7, 2015 with his family by his side, ending a courageous two-year battle with pancreatic cancer.

Founder and President of Donald L. Cordano and Associates and Professor Emeritus at Lewis University. He also served as board member and treasurer of Joliet Area Community Hospice, Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, Will Grundy Center for Independent Living and the Rialto Foundation, and held positions of leadership in many other professional associations. One of Don’s greatest loves was leading a small dance band for over 25 years. He was also a lifetime member of the Joliet Elks, Loyal Order of Moose, Knights of Columbus and The Old Timers Baseball Association.

He was born August 5, 1934 to the late Louise (nee Brusatte) and Joseph Cordano. Don married the love of his life, Suellen (nee Brehn) Cordano on August 29, 1959; loving father of Marisue (Dr. Alexander) Grabavoy and James (Stephani) Cordano; proud and devoted grandfather of Christiana Grabavoy (Stephen Hertzog) and Natalya Grabavoy; Mia and Griffin Cordano. Also survived by his brotherin-law, Jim Briscoe and several nieces and nephews.

Senate rejects Rauner’s veto of anti-heroin bill

SPRINGFIELD – Senate Democrats bucked Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto Wednesday in instituting a law to fight heroin abuse in Illinois, but ran into predictable Republican derision when they approved spending $3.8 billion to fund a variety of programs from breast cancer screenings to lottery prizes.

The Senate voted, 44-11, to override Rauner’s partial veto of the anti-heroin bill, following in the House’s footsteps a week ago and immediately putting into effect a wide-ranging approach to what advocates say is an epidemic of heroin abuse in the Prairie State.

On the day marking the 10th week that Illinois has gone without a statewide spending plan for the current fiscal year, the Senate also adopted on a party-line vote a plan to provide $1.8 billion in spending for human service needs, including child care, breast and cervical cancer screening, immunizations, autism treatment and more.

Comptroller: Bills backlog could exceed $8 billion

CHICAGO – Comptroller Leslie Munger said Illinois’ unpaid bills backlog could jump past $8 billion by next year without a state budget.

Munger reiterated Wednesday the consequences of having no spending plan to legislators and Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Both sides remain at impasse for the July 1 fiscal year.

Most of the state’s money is being spent through court orders, which Munger said continues at unsustainable rates. There’s also less revenue with a rolled back temporary income tax increase.

Munger said the backlog is $5.5 billion and could outpace $8.5 billion by December’s

end. In December 2014, it was roughly $6.6 billion.

Illinois lottery winners sue over halted payments

CHICAGO – Two lottery winners have filed a federal lawsuit against the Illinois Lottery after it stopped paying out large prizes because there’s no state budget.

The lawsuit filed Wednesday

by Rhonda Rasche and Danny Chasteen seeks class-action status. Rasche is awaiting a $50,000 payout. Chasteen won $250,000.

The state comptroller’s office said last month that without a budget, there’s no authority to write checks over $25,000, and payments would be delayed.

The lawsuit said the lottery still pays wages. It seeks a court order to stop ticket sales until Illinois pays. It alleges dozens await more than $288 million in prizes.

U. of Illinois sees large, diverse freshman class

URBANA – The freshman class at the University of Illinois’ flagship Urbana-Champaign campus this fall is the second largest in the school’s history and is more diverse than in previous years.

According to number released by the school this week, the class has slightly more Illinois residents and more African-American students than last year. The class also has 1,100 international students, and more than 70 percent of them are from China.

After a decade-long percentage decline, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign saw a 9 percent increase in its freshman class, with 7,565 incoming students. That’s just below the largest freshman class in school history, with 7,583 students in 2005, spokeswoman Robin Kaler said.

Flight 93 visitor center ‘tells incredible story of heroism’

By MICHAEL RUBINKAM The Associated Press SHANKSVILLE, Pa.– Gordon Felt knew his brother was sitting directly in front of two of the terrorists who hijacked United Airlines Flight 93.

But it “never really hit me,” Felt said, until he walked through the new, immersive visitor center at the Flight 93 National Memorial. There it was, the seating chart with his sibling’s name on it: Edward Felt, first class, second row.

“It kind of came crashing back,” said Felt, whose brother took part in a passenger revolt that brought the plane down in a southwestern Pennsylvania field.

“Those feelings that were always there – the emotion, the anger, the sense of loss – really are drawn back to the surface.”

Sitting on a hill overlooking the crash site near Shanksville, the $26 million visitor center complex will be dedicated and opened to the public Thursday, one day

before the annual 9/11 observances in Pennsylvania, New York and Washington. Victims’ family members got a private tour Wednesday.

Fourteen years in the making, the center uses photos, video, artifacts and interactive displays to tell the story of Flight 93, the only jetliner among the four commandeered by terrorists that failed to reach its intended target on Sept. 11, 2001. Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York, and one slammed into the Pentagon outside Washington. More than 3,000 people died.

The center’s 10 exhibits are laid out chronologically, with visitors learning how the 33 passengers and seven crew members – at least some of them already aware the nation was under attack – voted to charge the cockpit and then fought to regain control of the plane, whose hijackers are believed to have wanted to crash it into the U.S. Capitol.

“You are seeing an incredible story of heroism, a

piece of American history playing out in front of you as you are walking through this exhibit that gives perspective on the day,” said Felt, president of Families of Flight 93.

One video traces the aircraft’s erratic movements in real time, fading to black at the moment of impact. Bits and pieces of the debris field are displayed under glass.

Picking up a handset, visitors can listen to recordings of the voice messages that two passengers and a flight attendant left for family members minutes before the plane went down.

“I’m on United 93, and it’s been hijacked by terrorists who say they have a bomb,” passenger Linda Gronlund, calling her sister, Elsa, begins matter-of-factly. “Apparently, they have flown a couple of planes into the World Trade Center already, and it looks like they’re going to take this one down as well.”

She breaks down sobbing: “Mostly, I just wanted to say I love you and I’m going to miss you.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR An open letter to the District 210 Board of Education

To the Editor: The decision to close one of the Lincoln-Way High School district’s four buildings will have a tremendous impact on the district’s communities, affecting the lives of our children, families, teachers and taxpayers. Decisions of such importance should require accountability.

The citizens of the district deserve no less.

During the July 16 board meeting, some board members inquired about hiring a consulting firm to evaluate the district’s financial situation. These board members recognized it just makes sense to have someone from outside the 210 bubble come in and perform an independent evaluation. They understood that every effort should be made to make the most informed decision. At the following board meeting Aug. 1, the board listed four firms that were contacted as possibilities for this evaluation. None of them was hired.

Twelve days later, the board voted to

close Lincoln-Way North and shift 3,300 students westward.

One of the four options was a recommendation from the Illinois Association of School Administrators to hire its “District Reorganization Team.” This group from the University of Illinois – Springfield is the A-Team in school consulting in Illinois. The cost for its study would have been about what the district pays for water for one month at Lincoln-Way Central.

Why would the board make this decision without the expertise of an independent consultant? Doing so would have gained either support for the decision to close Lincoln-Way North or a recommendation for a better alternative. This also be would overwhelmingly supported by the affected parents and taxpayers of the district. There would be no questions.

Be accountable. Hire the U of I consulting firm to make the best informed decision possible. Eliminate any questions.

It’s not too late.

Doing small things for others that involve great love I hope Cynthia’s face never vanishes from my mind.

“Excuse me,” she said, from the pew behind me in a midtown Manhattan church one recent weekday.

“I need help. Please call an ambulance.

“I was raped.”

After talking with her in the 50 minutes or so between the initial 911 call and an ambulance’s arrival, I learned that the recent violation she described was probably the least of the pain inflicted on her.

She didn’t want to go back to where she was living. A man there won’t leave her alone and had been abusing her. She felt alone and wanted someone to believe her. She was worried the paramedics wouldn’t take her and doctors wouldn’t care for her because of what had happened to her.

And yet, by some miracle, she retained some dignity and hope. She told me she was going to go outside for a few minutes to smoke – “I know I shouldn’t do that. I know it’s not good for me.” Evil hadn’t crushed her yet. How resilient the human heart can be.

It seems to be a miracle.

For my part, I sent Cynthia off with the paramedics and spent some time praying for her. I had given her the phone number for Catholic Charities in Manhattan, figuring that it would be able to connect her with resources that could get her a new start.

It was days ago, and much has happened since. But I can’t stop thinking of Cynthia and regretting I didn’t do more for her – and that I don’t do more for others.

We all have our burdens and problems. But most of us

With all this in mind, I was grateful for the words of Philadelphia Archbishop Charles J. Chaput. He was speaking to the Religion Newswriters Association, as reporters prepped for the pope’s visit to that city later this month. He explained that the church in Philadelphia spends more than $4.2 million a year on “social services for the poor, the homeless, the

disabled, troubled youths, battered women, immigration counseling, food pantries and nutritional programs. And we manage another $100 million in public funding for the same or similar efforts.”

He emphasized this story can be told about the church throughout the United States, not just in Philadelphia.

His point served a number of purposes: to reframe the narrative that the bishops in the U.S. are out of step with Pope Francis in his love for the poor; to counter the canard that the Catholic Church in America only cares about abortion and gay marriage; and to highlight the reason the voice of the church has credibility when it comes to issues of poverty and injustice – because the church is there on the ground, tending to wounds on

the front lines.

As I pray for Cynthia, I am grateful there was a resource to connect her with. Mother Teresa, who died around this time in 1997, cared for people she described as “the poorest of the poor,” who were discarded and displaced, lost and forgotten. I’m reminded of her words: “In this world, we cannot do great things. We can only do small things with great love.”

Wherever we are, whatever we do, we can do just that.

And support organizations that do so as well.

Unleash hope. Our times certainly need it. Our lives certainly do.

A TALE OF TWO HALVES Romeoville gets off deck to overcome Lockport in nonconference match

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – The last thing a boys soccer team wants is to be looking at a 2-0 halftime deficit against another good team.

But that’s just where Romeoville found itself against Lockport when the sides met Wednesday for a nonconference match.

The Spartans gradually swung the momentum to their advantage and went on to score four times in the second

half to claim a 4-2 victory over the Porters.

In the 46th minute, Matt Ickes set up Aldo Diaz to give Romeoville (4-2) a spark, then in the 53rd minute, Leandro Deagueros got the equalizer off a pass from Christian Duarte.

After Duarte found David Cahue for the match-winner in the 71st minute, the pair reversed roles a short time later to cap their dramatic comeback win.

“I had to challenge the guys to see what they were made of and have them step it up,”

Spartans coach Nick Cirrincione said. “In the second half, I switched up our whole lineup, and I might have found a golden gem that I didn’t know about.

“Guys who played well in the first half who normally don’t start started in the second half, and the seniors scored goals, played great defensively and stepped up. I give the credit to our seniors for winning this game. They took the lead and ran with it.”

The Spartans capitalized on their first good chance of the

second half when Ickes sent a pass to Diaz, who got past defenders and put a touch on a ball that rolled into the net.

“Looking at the second half with us down 2-0, I knew that we had to get back in the game,” Ickes said. “After that cross I gave, I was like, ‘Yes, this is what’s going to get us started.’ It boosted the whole team and got the momentum going, and it all started going up from there.

“We kept getting more excited, and we were more excited and were ready to get back

in it. Romeoville is known to be down by some goals and then be able to get right back into it – that’s just who we are.

I honestly believe that we have a very good team this season.”

Romeoville didn’t wait long to even the score, doing so on its next good opportunity. Duarte initiated things with a pass inside to Deagueros, who put in a close-range attempt.

JCA runners compete in Memphis event SUBMITTED REPORTS The Joliet Catholic boys and girls cross country teams ran in two different states recently as they trained at Cross Country Town USA in Terre Haute, Indiana, and raced in the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic in Memphis, Tennessee, last weekend.

There were eight total races featuring middle school, high school and collegiate athletes in the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic. Runners competed in a 5K (3.1 miles).

The varsity girls race featured 357 total runners, and JCA finished 27th. The Angels were led by freshman Emma McSteen (22:40), junior Kelly Testin (22:43), junior Alyson Egizio (23:06) and junior Madeline Blotnik (23:36), with juniors Shannon Quinn and Dani Scudder (24:38) rounding out the scoring.

In the boys varsity race, 68 teams competed with 386 runners. The boys placed 44th and were led by senior Harry McSteen, who placed 68th with 17:57. Sophomore Tyler Hinthorn (20:45), junior Zach Corcoran (21:29)

and seniors Zachary Gochee (21:37) and Jack Jones (22:07) completed the scoring.

Freshman Grace Bannon led the Angels in the girls JV race with her 30th-place finish.

2. Lincoln-Way West (2-0): The Warriors face a difficult assignment Friday, opening the SouthWest Suburban Red schedule at crosstown rival Lincoln-Way Central.

3. Lincoln-Way East (1-1): The Griffins did not like losing their opener to Oak Park-River Forest, and they took it out on Lincoln Park last week. Joliet West could be an interesting challenge Friday night.

4. Bolingbrook (1-1): Despite the presence of highly regarded Homewood-Flossmoor and Lincoln-Way East, the Raiders are primed to begin their pursuit of a possible SouthWest Suburban Blue championship with a visit to Sandburg.

5. Lemont (2-0): Because of a storm delay, Indians had to wait a day before posting a 15-9 victory at Danville. Defense will be the key Friday when Richards visits.

8. Joliet West (2-0): The Tigers are getting strong play from their defense, which will have to be at its best Friday night, when Lincoln-Way East visits to open the SouthWest Suburban Blue season.

7. Plainfield North (1-1): The Tigers outgained Bishop McNamara, 490-253, yet fell to the Fighting Irish, 17-14. Quarterback JD Ekowa completed 15 of 28 passes for 296 yards and two touchdowns.

8. Providence (0-2): The Celtics, after losing to Oswego, 14-13, are behind the 8-ball at 0-2.

On the plus side, Catholic Blue matchups usually are competitive on both sides. On the other hand, defending Class 7A state champion Providence must play better than it has so far to have a legitimate shot at the Caravan. If the Celtics can get more production from running back Richie Warfield and running back/receiver Mike Markasovic in their offense, that would take some pressure off the defense.

Meanwhile, the Southwest Prairie and SouthWest Suburban Blue and Red conferences get rolling this weekend.

Now, it’s time to get serious.

That is not exactly true. Local high school football teams are serious about winning every time they step on the field, regardless of the opponent. It’s just that the first two weeks of the season are when most teams play their only nonconference games. This Friday night, the conference wars begin for almost everyone.

In this era of 256-team playoff field, a conference championship may not have the luster it once had. And every year, it seems some second- or thirdplace team from a power conference steps up in the postseason and makes a run at the state final.

Still, conference games are a big deal. If you can’t prove you belong with the big boys in your league, chances are you will not last long if you do sneak into the playoffs.

Legends Bill Jean King and Jerry West named race grand marshals SUBMITTED REPORT JOLIET – Two big names from the world of sports will serve as the grand marshals for the MyAFib. com 400 NASCAR Sprint Cup race Sept. 20 at Chicagoland Speedway.

The speedway announced that 39-time Grand Slam tennis champion Billie Jean King and all-time basketball great Jerry West as the grand marshals.

As part of AFib Awareness Month, Janssen – the official cardiovascular partner of NASCAR – has teamed up with King and West to talk about a heart condition they share in common with millions of Americans. Atrial fibrillation, or AFib, is an irregular heartbeat that puts them at a one in three chance of having a stroke.

On Sept. 19, the Furious 7 300 NASCAR XFINITY Series will hit the track as the precursor to the next day’s MyAFibRisk.com 400, the first race in the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup. In addition to the racing action, there will be live musical entertainment, Champions Park, tailgating and more.

ST. LOUIS – Cardinals rookie Stephen Piscotty continues to show a penchant for making quick adjustments.

After going hitless in his first three at-bats, Piscotty lined a two-run double off the centerfield wall to cap a three-run rally in the eighth inning Wednesday that sent St. Louis over the Cubs, 4-3.

Matt Carpenter tripled and scored twice as the Cardinals’ ended their three-game losing streak. The NL Central leaders avoided their first sweep at home this season and their first against the Cubs since September 2010.

“It’s definitely good to get that one,” Piscotty said. “You don’t want to get swept by the Cubs. We’re fine. There’s no panic. We did a good job of fighting back.”

Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said Piscotty is a good self-evaluator.

“This is what he did: ‘He got me last time, this is what I probably need to do.’

And not many guys can make those adjustments as far as approach,” Matheny said. “He’s able to think ahead and then make those physical adjustments as well.”

Cubs lefty Jon Lester exited after seven dominant innings. He gave up two hits, retired 20 of his final 21 hitters and left with a 3-1 lead.

Having said that, what if Plainfield South and Plainfield East find offensive consistency? Their defenses can be good enough to cause anyone trouble.

And what if Minooka continues to get good production from its Johnny Carnagio-led offense and continues to win the close ones? Perhaps the Indians can be in the hunt.

If we have learned anything

from the Southwest Prairie through the years, it’s that not a lot makes sense. As soon as you feel you have it figured out, a couple more strange results show up.

In the SouthWest Suburban Blue, Homewood-Flossmoor – which some have ranked as high as No. 1 in the state – is the early favorite. However, Lincoln-Way East and Bolingbrook never are out of the title picture. Both lost their season openers, but that might have done nothing but made them better.

In addition, you can’t help but wonder how Joliet West will fit into the mix. We may learn a lot about these Tigers in Friday night’s home opener against Lincoln-Way East.

In the SouthWest Suburban Red, Lincoln-Way West will visit Lincoln-Way Central on Friday night in an early showdown. The Warriors and Knights will join Thornton, Lincoln-Way North, Bradley and perhaps one or two others in making this one of the most competitive conference races anywhere.

If there is a constant in all of this, it is that we should be in for several close games that go down to the final minutes every week from now until the end of the regular season. With the backdrop of strong conference rivalries, our Friday nights will be a blast.

As Harvest saw its prayers answered, others found Harvest to be an answer to their prayers. One individual was Raul Torres of Joliet, a self-proclaimed “backslider” who turned his back on his salvation and returned to drinking and drug abuse, Torres said.

Torres said he told God that if God wanted him to return to church, he needed a church close to home and one that his family would attend with him. Two weeks later, Torres met Posteluk in a parking lot, where Posteluk was distributing fliers about Harvest.

Lynne Thigpen School was three minutes from Torres’ house, Torres said. The flier sat on the counter for six months before Torres attended church, yet his entire family now attends with him. This includes Torres’ wife, nine children, parents and in-laws.

“God made it happen,” Torres said. “It was just awesome.”

Ivec would agree.

“The humbling thing is to see where it is right now and to remember where it came from,” Ivec said. “People see a thriving church and assume the people did it. Eric didn’t do it; I didn’t do it. It’s a neat thing to see how God answers prayer.”

Pope speeds up, simplifies annulment process The ASSOCIATED PRESS VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis radically reformed the process for annulling marriages Tuesday, overhauling 300 years of church practice by creating a new fast-track annulment and doing away with an automatic appeal that often slowed the process down.

The move, which came a week after he said he was letting all rank-and-file priests grant absolution to women who have had abortions, was further evidence of his desire to make the church more responsive to the needs of ordinary faithful.

The new law on annulments goes into effect Dec. 8, the start of Francis’ Holy Year of Mercy, a yearlong

jubilee during which the pope hopes to emphasize the merciful side of the church.

It will speed up and simplify the annulment process by placing the onus squarely on bishops around the world to determine when a fundamental flaw has made a marriage invalid.

A Catholic needs a church annulment to remarry in the church, and a divorced Catholic who remarries civilly without one is considered an adulterer living in sin and is forbidden from receiving Communion.

The Communion issue is at the center of debate at the upcoming synod of bishops, a three-week meeting that gets underway in October.

Progressive bishops favor a process by which these

Catholics eventually could have access to the sacrament if they repent; conservatives say there can be no such wiggle room and that church teaching is clear that a marriage is indissoluble.

Catholics long have complained it can take years to get an annulment, if they can get one at all. Costs can reach into the hundreds or thousands of dollars for legal and tribunal fees, although some dioceses have waived their fees.

Reasons for granting annulments vary, including that the couple never intended the marriage to last or that one spouse didn’t want children.

The new law also says that “lack of faith” can also be grounds for an annulment.

The auction was straightforward.

East was right to overcall one spade for two reasons: His side might have been able to outbid the opponents, and to help partner with his opening lead.

Then South jumped to three no-trump with sufficient points for game and two spade stoppers.

At the table, East encouraged with the spade 10 under his partner’s queen.

However, he is still waiting for his partner to lead another spade. East’s assumption that his partner had started with two spades was not valid.

South allowed the spade queen to hold the first trick, took West’s diamond shift, and played on clubs to establish 10 tricks. He lost only one spade and two clubs.

As you have noticed, East should have overtaken the spade queen with his king.

People with risk factors for eye problems – those with diabetes, for example – may need more frequent eye exams.

Finally, it’s never too late to protect your eyes from further sun damage.

You can do that with the right pair of sunglasses.

Foremost is to make sure the sunglasses protect against ultraviolet rays, both UVA and UVB. You’ll want 95 to 100 percent blockage. You may also consider buying polarized lenses, which reduce the glare from water, sand and snow.

Having been raised in “sunny” Southern California, I spent a great deal of time in the sun during the first 20 years of my life. I didn’t wear sunglasses for most of those years. In my 60s I developed cataracts in both eyes, one of which was bad enough to require surgery. I also developed damage to the retina of one eye, which my ophthalmologist calls “accelerated aging.”

My ophthalmologist tells me he can’t be sure if these conditions were influenced by my failure to protect my eyes from the sun when I was young. If he can’t be sure, neither can I. But I’ll bet they were.

What can we do to protect ourselves?

Dear Reader: Yes, it does. And to a large extent, the damage may already be done. I spoke to Dr. Louis Pasquale, an ophthalmologist at Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary. He noted that spending a lot of time in the sun without sunglasses when you’re young may put you at risk for developing eye problems when you’re older. The damage would probably be done in your 20s and 30s.

We don’t know exactly how the sun’s ultraviolet rays cause eye damage.

And we also don’t know for certain whether sunlight directly causes certain common eye conditions like cataracts, glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

But there’s good evidence that sun exposure can cause an eye condition that often leads to other problems. This condition is called “exfoliation syndrome.”

Exfoliation syndrome leaves tiny, dandruff-like flakes in the eye. A buildup of these flakes clogs the eye’s natural drains, which can lead to other problems. Worldwide, it is the most common identifiable cause of two kinds of glaucoma. It is also linked to cataracts and possibly to AMD. There are no symptoms of exfoliation syndrome until you start to lose your sight from other eye problems.

There’s no cure • but there are treatments for the other conditions that may result.

The best way to stop exfoliation syndrome, glaucoma, AMD and cataracts from robbing you of your vision is to discover these conditions before they progress. You can do that with a comprehensive eye exam, done by

Dear Abby: At what point does a parent no longer have the right to know who their child’s friends are?

I have three grown daughters, all on their own, living on the other side of the country.

During a recent visit home for their grandmother’s birthday, I asked each of them to give me all of their friends’ phone numbers, in case I couldn’t reach them.

I also wanted to know who they were exactly, how well they knew them, etc. I was simply thinking of their safety. If I can’t reach my girls, I want to know who might have seen them last and, if need be, give that information to the police.

Abby, all three of them told me NO! They said they are grown women and can take care of themselves, and besides, if, God forbid, they didn’t want to answer their phone when I called, I sure as h--- didn’t need to be pestering their friends.

They say they are adults, and that we (their dad and I) no longer have the right to “dictate” who they are friends with.

I say I’m their mother and no matter how old they get, I will ALWAYS have the right to know who they are friends with. I would appreciate your thoughts. – Renee in Oregon Dear Renee: I agree that

They are self-supporting, self-sufficient adults.

Perhaps if you were less overbearing, your daughters would be living closer, would answer their phones more often when you call and would open up to you about their friendships.
