Victim’s father breaks down in tears

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – In the nearly two years leading up to the Feb. 13 shooting death of Briana Valle, her family did all they could to protect the 15-year-old from her accused killer.

That was the message prosecutors gave during opening statements Tuesday in the murder trial of Erick M. Maya, 24, of Cicero. Maya faced jurors for the first time Tuesday on murder charges in connection with the death of his former girlfriend. He’s also accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend’s mother, Alicia Guerrero, in the neck.

Elizabeth Domagalla, with the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office, told jurors the Valle family’s “nightmare” extends as far back as June 2012 when Maya and Briana,

then 13, first made contact on Facebook.

Briana, who was obsessed with Maya at the time, ran away with him, according to orders of protection obtained by the family. Two weeks later, she was found at his Cicero home.

Valle’s obsession with Maya apparently turned to fear late last year, when Maya allegedly texted one of Valle’s friends, saying he planned to rape the mother and daughter and kidnap Valle. That led Briana’s mother to take out an emergency order of protection against Maya, saying she and her daughter feared for her safety.

In the year leading up to the shooting, Maya got Briana’s name tattooed on his forearm and even purchased an engagement ring to give to Briana, Domagalla said in

her opening statement.

A former roommate of Maya, Abisai Ortiz, 24, told jurors on Tuesday he met Maya through his brother.

Maya was “quiet” and “kept to himself,” but borrowed his cellphone at times to log into Facebook and send text messages. On Tuesday during testimony, it was unclear whether Maya used his phone to correspond with Briana.

Ortiz said he had only met Briana once during the time Maya lived with him, but they never spoke.

Jurors also heard testimony from Briana’s father, Alejandro Valle, who broke down in tears in the courtroom as prosecutors asked questions about the day his daughter was shot in the family’s driveway.

Briana, and her mother were leaving their residence in the 300 block of Emery Av-

enue the morning of Feb. 13 when Maya allegedly came up and opened fire into their car. Guerrero survived.

Alejandro Valle, who worked night shifts, was asleep at the time of the shooting, but was awoken by a neighbor, he said.

Several witnesses, including paramedics from the Romeoville Fire Department, on scene that day described Briana’s mother as “hysterical,” and “worried about her daughter.”

Police found Maya that day hiding under a porch two blocks from where his ex-girlfriend was shot. He was discovered about three hours after the shooting hiding behind some lawn bags under a deck in the 300 block of Hickory Avenue.

Maya’s trial continues Wednesday and is expected to last into next week. Jurors will hear about text messages and other relationships Maya had with friends and two teenage girls.

Trucker in fatal I-55 crash pleads not guilty

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Francisco Espinal-Quiroz, the trucker in the Interstate 55 crash that led to the deaths of five people, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to reckless homicide charges at his arraignment.

Espinal-Quiroz, 51, of Leesburg, Indiana, faces 15 counts of reckless homicide and two counts of falsifying logbook entries. He is being held in the Will County jail on $1 million bond.

With a Spanish-speaking interpreter to explain the proceedings to him, Espinal-Quiroz’s attorneys pleaded not guilty to all of the charges in the indictment.

Records show Espinal-Quiroz has been driving trucks since 1991 with a vision waiver from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration that was renewed the day before the July 21 crash.

Authorities said Espinal-Quiroz was traveling 15 mph over the speed limit at 2:17

p.m. when his red Freightliner slammed into three vehicles backed up in the northbound lanes. Traffic was stalled by construction work on the Des Plaines River bridge in Channahon Township.

Kimberly K. Britton, 43, and Piper Britton, 11, of Urbana, Vicky L. Palacios, 54, of Coal City, Ulrike Blopleh, 48, of Channahon, and Timothy Osburn, 64, of Urbana, were killed in the chain-reaction collision.

Espinal-Quiroz allegedly told police at the scene he started work at 2:30 a.m. but had written in the logbook he had begun at 6:30 a.m.

Espinal-Quiroz is scheduled to appear in court for a pretrial hearing on Oct. 22.

Joliet city payroll still recovering from recession

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – With the recent hiring of four paramedics, the Joliet Fire Department expects to see its ranks back to 209 firefighters, its pre-recession staffing level.

But other city departments, notably police and public works, have seen their ranks drastically reduced by attrition since 2008.

The Joliet Police Department dropped from 302 employees six years ago to 261 today, Chief Brian Benton said. That’s a reduction of 13.5 percent.

“After the recession hit, we lost a significant number of officers,” Benton said. “We’ve slowly been trying to build back up.”

The department has to maintain a constant patrol force across the city of at least 19 officers and four supervisors over multiple shifts, Benton said. It’s maintained that staffing level by transferring in officers from other programs and units.

The department has cut back its Neighborhood Policing program from 28 to 18 officers, and eliminated its Safe School division altogether.

Detectives, tactical squads, drug task force units and City Center special service officers all have seen their ranks thinned.

“We just try to be more efficient with the manpower we have to fill those needs,” Benton said.

The loss of staff has drastically changed the department’s street maintenance role, Trizna said.

“At one time we had enough staff that we could take people off maintenance and have them rebuild streets,” Trizna said. “We don’t have time to do that anymore. We can only maintain streets.”

Snow plowing is another issue for public works.

“It used to take us 12 to 18 hours to plow the city,” Trizna said. “Now it takes anywhere from 18 to 24 hours because we have fewer people.”

Overtime issues Out on the streets It’s a similar situation in the city’s street department, which has lost 11 of 44 positions over the past six years, Public Works Director Jim Trizna said.

“It didn’t happen overnight,” Trizna said. “Guys would retire and we wouldn’t be able to refill the slots.”

Lack of staffing has created other issues, including an increase in overtime, which can be especially acute in times of crisis.

“Our overtime is dictated by crime,” Benton said. For example, most of the police department’s detective unit was called out for an Aug. 31 stabbing.

City Manager Jim Hock said the city also is facing acute problems in other areas.

“How the city addressed its financial crisis was that they decided not to lay off employees,” Hock noted. “Instead they cut vehicle replacement and training, and equipment purchases were reduced to zero. As our budget recovers, we need to dedicate money to train employees, replace our vehicle fleet and dedicate some money towards equipment, especially snow plows.”

As far as hiring, Hock said the City Council has placed an emphasis on removing thousands of ash trees ravaged by the emerald ash borer.

“I see that as the No. 1 staffing priority next year, hiring some people in public works to start trimming trees,” Hock said.

At the same time, the city also will have to provide a bucket truck, training, chainsaws and other equipment.

“I can hire someone to trim the trees, but if they don’t have the equipment, they can’t do it,” Hock said.

Compensation study

As of mid-July, the department had spent about 45 percent of its $2.4 million overtime budget.

“But we could be in the red real quickly if we have crimes that demand services,” Benton said.

Public works already has gone 147 percent over its $524,750 overtime budget, due primarily to snow plowing and other problems associated with the record cold winter,

Trizna said.

“After all the water main breaks over the winter, it took us a long time to catch up,” Trizna said.

In all, the city is down 148 positions from its high-water mark of 780 positions in 2008, according to city records. Most of the losses were because of retirements.

He was able to push through a 2 percent increase in July for the city’s non-union workers, their first pay raise since 2008. Union workers also are getting 2 percent increases negotiated in their contracts.

He said an upcoming compensation study will help the city to better determine what the pay grades should be for its various positions.

“If we can get our arms around issues like that, we can approach the unions on specific positions,” Hock said. “Otherwise we’ll be looking at more situations where our funds could be totally depleted.”

Show follows Joliet native’s tropical venture ‘Trouble in Paradise’ premieres Sunday

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It sounds like a dream come true: a Joliet man starts a new life with his family and friends in a tropical island paradise.

But even in paradise, nothing’s perfect.

That’s the premise of “Trouble in Paradise,” a television reality show pilot about the trials and tribulations of Joliet restaurateur Derek Brenczewski as he struggles to open The Majestic Isle Casino in Antigua, an island in the West Indies.

“I purchased a defunct casino in the island of Antigua for 15 million bucks,” Brenczewski said. “I had no experience in the casino business, and, quite honestly, I had no idea where Antigua was. No place

is more different from Joliet than Antigua.”

The pilot for the show is scheduled to premiere at 9 p.m. Sunday on Spike TV. A viewing party will be held that evening at Heroes West, 1530 Commerce Lane, Joliet, Brenczewski said.

Brenczewski said the show focuses on his crew’s efforts to renovate and rebrand the casino, which he and a group of investors purchased in 2013. Brenczewski, a former owner of The Department and McBrody’s, said he learned about the opportunity while trying to get video gaming licenses for the two Joliet restaurants. Both restaurants closed this year.

Soon after making the decision to move to Antigua, Brenczewski said he was approached by a producer from

Giant Pirates Entertainment.

The Culver City, California-based company was exploring the idea of some kind of Joliet-based reality show, possibly on the prisons.

“I’m a big advocate of Joliet, but I told them I was moving,” Brenczewski said.

“When I told them the whole story, they called back and said, ‘There is nothing like this on TV. What do you think about doing a reality show?’ ” Filming on the project started in 2013 as Brenczewski was preparing to leave The Department, which he sold to some of his former employees.

“They did a lot of the early footage in Joliet,” Brenczewski said.

While much of the series focuses on getting the casino up and running, the show

also highlights the family’s adjustment to the much slower-paced island lifestyle.

“It’s a British Commonwealth,” Brenczewski said.

“The only sports they play here are cricket and soccer.”

There are relatively few cars on the island. Brenczewski said he had to make accommodations to pick up and drop off many of the casino’s

55 employees, since they had no transportation.

“Antigua is a very gentle country. Everyone is real friendly here,” Brenczewski said. “Everyone picks up hitchhikers here. Back in Chicago, you’d never do that, but here I pick up everybody.”

In addition to Brenczewski and his family – wife Hallie, sons Brody, 15, and Blake, 11 – the reality show will include locals Steve Lausch, Mickey Omatto, Liz Kelly Ancel, Matt Fazio, Rob Liberty, Diana Markovich, Jim Suarez, Karen Montz, Zach Brenczewski, Mandie Brenczewski, Gil Velasquez, Larry Garvey, Kaitlin Soto and Brooke Brenczewski.

Spike will broadcast the pilot several times to determine a future time placement, Brenczewski said. If picked up, the show will start in January or February, he said.

Race Fan Rally on Thursday kicks off NASCAR weekend

Will County nears record for rabid bat detection Two more found in Elwood

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – Two more rabid bats have been found locally, bringing this year’s total to just one shy of a record high for Will County.

Whether there are more rabid bats flying around this year or whether Will County is just good at finding them is uncertain. But the county also leads the state in detection of rabid bats.

“We’ve been first or second, if you will, all year,” said Vic Reato, spokesman for the Will County Health Department.

The latest discoveries were in Elwood last week, where two bats with rabies were found.

That brings the number of rabid bats found in the county to 11, which compares to the

record 12 found in 2012.

Statewide, 25 rabid bats have been confirmed, showing a disproportionate number detected in Will County.

The state is having a typical year for rabid bat detection, said Melaney Arnold, spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Public Health.

“They fluctuate year to year, although they generally stay around 50 or 60,” Arnold said. “The majority of them are in Cook County or the collar counties.”

Will County has seen six rabid bats since Aug. 25. That’s not so unusual, said Reato, who noted, “August and September are the two months when you see the majority of the bat findings.”

As to why so many have been found in Will County, he’s not sure. But Reato said

the Will County Health Department takes rabid bats seriously, and people in the county seem to do so, as well.

“Probably we send as many bats for testing as any locale in the state because we get a lot more calls,” he said. “People recognize that rabies is a potentially fatal thing.”

The latest two rabid bats were found within 24 hours of each other. One was found near the back door of a church on North Chicago Street, and the other was in the backyard of a residence on West Manhattan Road.

In a news release announcing the latest rabid bat findings, Will County Animal Control Administrator Lee Schild said, “People seem more aware of the rabies risk and report incidents to us in growing numbers. That’s a good thing – it enables us to stay ahead of what could be a very serious situation.”

Shorewood prepares for winter with salt purchase

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – The Village Board on Tuesday approved its second and most likely final purchase of salt to get ready for the winter season.

Trustees approved a contract for 1,000 tons of salt from Batavia-based Midwest Salt at a price of $107.2 per ton or $107,200 total.

“This is the best salt price we could find,” Public Works Director Chris Drey said to the board. “Other municipalities are in the same position.”

Shorewood is one of many villages and cities in Will County that haven’t had luck with the Illinois Department of Central Management Services marketplace for salt contracts.

Last season’s harsh storms and cold weather caused a salt shortage that pushed up prices of salt two-fold from last year’s price. Municipalities have been

working on their own solutions to the problem while the county has seen salt double in value.

And Drey said prices have continued to rise as the summer progressed.

Earlier in the year, the village couldn’t solicit a salt bid through the program. Staff was looking to buy 3,000 tons.

So they had to look at other ways to replenish salt reserves, which totalled about 600, Drey said.

Eventually, trustees ended up approving the purchase of only 1,000 tons of salt from Elgin-based Central Salt LLC at $92.15 a ton on Aug. 12 to break up the order and chance for a cheaper second contract of 1,000 tons.

Drey said that while the village only came up with 2,000 tons instead of the 3,000 it hoped to get with the $200,000 salt budget, the village will still manage.

“If we need to we will go out

and buy more salt,” he said.

“But for now we will have enough.”

The village will use a brine solution as well as more efficient salt mixtures to increase the efficacy of the salt by 30 percent, Drey said.

“I think you did the best job we could pricing-wise,” Mayor Rick Chapman said.

Ash trees Shorewood is continuing the process of removing ash trees infested by the emerald ash borer beetle.

Trustees approved the payment of $88,478.19 to Homer Tree Care Inc. for the removal of trees in the northern third of the village. Bigger trees are currently being treated with an insecticide.

However, trustees and Chapman said it may be wise to reconsider continuous use of the insecticide because of the $30 per tree cost.

Joliet family services agency receives grant

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, has announced that $1 million in funding from the U.S. Department of Justice would go toward supporting Illinois programs assisting victims of human trafficking and sexual assault.

Guardian Angel Community Service is receiving $352,416 through the Office on Violence Against Women’s Transitional Housing Grant Program. The program provides aid to people who are victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking.

Ukraine counsul general updates Rotary on crisis

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – Consul General of Ukraine Andriy Pravednyk spoke to the Channahon-Minooka Rotary Club on Tuesday to discuss the conflict between his homeland and Russia.

Pravednyk said Russian President Vladimir Putin justifies attacks in Ukraine as an attempt to preserve Russian culture and language.

“I have to tell you, that was never true,” Pravednyk said. “[The separatists] found some people who were not happy with their lives and managed to persuade them. They started creating what they call rebels, for their rights. We call them terrorists.”

Ukraine has large companies that produce military and civil rockets. Without those facilities, Russia could not produce its own rockets, Pravednyk said.

Pravednyk said his people fear Russia taking control of Ukraine’s facilities and using the weapons against its own people.

Pravednyk also spoke about the Union Association Agreement signed in June between Ukraine and Europe, which opened doors for “deep and comprehensive fair trade, economic reform” and a way for “Ukraine to fully integrate into the European market.”

Pravednyk said Putin would not acknowledge sending troops to Ukraine. But, “In Crimea, there were green [clothed] people on every corner, on every street in every town,” Pravednyk said, referring to armed soldiers.

He added that, because of limited access to Internet in that part of the world – only 20 percent of Russians have access – they are subjected to propaganda every hour, hearing that Ukrainians are fascist.

It’s mostly elderly people living in Ukraine who remain communists, Pravednyk said.

He spoke of his own grandfather, a communist, whose monthly pension was reduced from the American equivalent of $200 a month to $40 after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

His grandfather was living a comfortable life until then. Because he was never subjected to imprisonment or other harsh treatments, he believed he was better off before that time.

While a ceasefire agreement was made between Ukraine and pro-Russian rebels on Friday, there has been official confirmation that separatists have already breached it several times, Pravednyk said.

Pravednyk said Ukraine needs help from other countries, not in the form of military forces, but with military equipment to fight Russian troops and separatists.

Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon thanked for supporting program

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A partnership between Joliet Junior College and a carpenters union opens doors to a college degree for building trades workers.

People who do carpentry, insulation or siding can translate their on-the-job training into college credits or certificates under a Joliet Junior College program.

The community college partnered with the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters to create the program,

which aims to better train apprentices and sharpen the skills of journeymen who have completed their union training.

On Tuesday, Frank Libby, the union’s president, thanked the community college, along with Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon, for supporting the program’s creation. The dream of attending college or earning a degree is no longer elusive to tradespeople, he said.

“This was a collaborative effort. Many people worked on and took years and years to put it together,” he said.

The program offers an associate degree in general studies that includes apprenticeship program completion and onthe-job training, with 20 hours of JJC course credits. JJC also offers construction management certificates that count job proficiency toward completion.

The program has about 90 applicants this year. Libby said much of the program’s interest comes from people who have finished union apprenticeships.

He said many employers look for workers with a col-

lege education because they require skills besides field experience, such as communication.

Simon said the program benefits students, the carpenters union and the state. The students get a degree and increase employment opportunities, she said. Unions get recognition for the training they provide.

“The carpenters [union] provide an amazing amount of training – really high-skilled training – that now a community college is recognizing, taking advantage of and pack-

aging with high quality teaching,” she said.

She said this program also benefits the state, since state officials have set a goal of getting 60 percent of the workforce with college credentials by 2025.

Several city and community colleges, such as the College of DuPage and Waubonsee Community College, are either beginning similar programs or preparing to launch them.

Simon, who is running for state comptroller against incumbent Judy Baar Topinka, lists the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters’ political action committee as a supporter on her campaign website.

Foster also owns several residential rental properties in the district. He built his own home in Forest Park in

2007. He also was vice president of a daycare center that operated in Joliet for 12 years.

“I want to see all of Joliet grow at the same pace. I believe there are a lot of opportunities not made available to District 4 residents,” Foster said. “I believe with all of my training and experience, I can be an asset to the City Council and well represent my district.”

“We are looking at the Lockport incident in conjunction with our investigation,” Bolingbrook Lt. Mike Rompa said Tuesday.

At 11:54 a.m. Sept. 3, two men came into the T-Mobile store at 745 E. Boughton Road and displayed a handgun. Ac-

cording to Rompa, the robbers ordered the employees and customers into the back room, where they demanded cellphones and tablets from the store’s safe.

The pair also took the customers’ cellphones, cash and a purse before running out the back door, Rompa said.

At 7:45 p.m. Friday, two men came into T-Mobile, 16600 W. 159th St. in Lockport, with a gun and demanded cellphones and tablets.

No one was injured in either robbery. The suspects in

both incidents were described as black men in their early 20s. In the Lockport robbery, both men were wearing beige hoodies and are believed to have escaped in a light blue sedan.

Another holdup occurred early Thursday at business in the 1100 block of West Lincoln Highway in Frankfort. At 1:27 a.m., two masked men took cash, cigars and the business telephone, according to Frankfort police. Reports indicate both men were armed with black handguns.

Police Capt. Tab Jensen said tactical officers were near Hennepin Drive and Plainfield Road about 6:40 p.m. when they saw a 2002 Audi commit a traffic violation.

“When officers approached, the occupants acted nervous and gave inconsistent answers about where they were coming from,” Jensen said.

A police canine was called

to the scene and alerted officers to drugs inside the vehicle. Officers searched the car to find a rock of cocaine Joe L. weighing 141 Marquez grams beneath the back seat, Jensen said.

Joe L. Marquez, 52, of Cornell, Wisconsin, and James Matos, James Matos 36, of the 8000 block of 45th Court in Lyons, were arrested and booked into the Will County jail on charges of drug trafficking.

OBITUARIES LAWRENCE E. CARTER Born: Nov. 18, 1932 Died: Sept. 7, 2014 Lawrence “Larry” Edward Carter, age 81, passed peacefully Sunday, September 7, 2014, in his home with his loving children and caregiver at his side, following complications secondary to advanced prostate cancer.

He was born in Joliet, IL on November 18, 1932, to John and Margaret (nee Homerding) Carter.

He was a long time Minooka area resident. Larry proudly served in the United States Army, and was a Korean War Veteran. He was a retired foreman at Amoco Chemicals with 30+ years of service. Larry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He enjoyed gardening, classic country music, and spending time with family and friends.

Survived by his son, Clint Carter; daughter, Brenda Freeman; grandson, William Carter Freeman; and sister, Margaret Clearwaters.

Preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret; his loving wife, Donna G. (nee Sheridan); and brothers, Jack and Thomas Carter.

He was 96.

a trumpeter with Lunceford, he arranged the hit tunes “Hi Spook” and “Yard Dog Mazurka.”

After four years with Lunceford and a stint in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Wilson settled in Los Angeles, where he worked in the bands of Benny Carter, Les Hite and Phil Moore before forming his own band. He worked with Billie Holiday on the singer’s tour of the South in 1949.

Wilson led his own bands in the ’50s and ’60s, but took frequent hiatuses as he became

one of the most in demand arrangers and orchestrators in jazz and pop music. He wrote more than 60 charts for Charles, scored motion pictures such as Otto Preminger’s “Anatomy of a Murder,” and served as the conductor and music director of TV’s “The Red Foxx Show.”

But despite his commercial success, he never gave up his dedication to jazz. “I decided to do what I wanted to do, and what I wanted to do was jazz.

Because first and foremost, I’m a jazz musician,” Wilson

told Jazz Times magazine in a 2011 interview.

His marriage to a Mexican-American, Josefina Villasenor Wilson, led him to incorporate Latin music into his jazz compositions. His tune, “Viva Tirado,” dedicated to bullfighter Jose Ramon Tirado, became a Top 40 pop hit for the rock group El Chicano in 1970. He also composed his first piece for symphony orchestra, “Debut: 5/21/72,” on a commission from Zubin Mehta and the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Among Beverly’s greatest pleasures were boating on the lakes in the Northwoods of Wisconsin and a good game of tennis with her friends. This sparked her passion for world travel, which she eventually shared with her second husband, Howard F. (Bus) Weber.

Beverly led an active life of service in Joliet. She will be most remembered for devoting 58 years of leadership in Childerguild. She served as President four times and chaired the annual charity ball on numerous occasions. She also served Silver Cross Hospital as a member of the Board of Directors for 12 years. Beverly served the Joliet community civically as an elected official of the Troy Township board for 33 years.

Beverly was a member of First Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday school and served as a Deacon for many years. She was involved in all aspects of the church community life.

Illinois data show fewer motorcycle fatalities

SPRINGFIELD – Motorcycle fatalities decreased by nearly 30 percent so far in 2014, according to Illinois Department of Transportation data.

Sixty motorcycle riders were killed between January and July of this year, data show, compared to 84 fatalities during the same time period in 2013.

Bob Myers, legislative coordinator for a motorcyclist rights group, told The State Journal-Register that any number of fatalities is “more than any of us want.”

Data from the Illinois Secretary of State’s office show slightly fewer motorcyclists on Illinois roads this year. There were 360,188 registered bikes on the road this year, down from 360,883 last year.

Increasing speed limits on Illinois interstates to match those throughout the country makes roads safer for motorcyclists, according to Myers. A law that increased the speed limit on the state’s rural interstates went into effect earlier this year.

Traveling Vietnam Wall heads to Carbondale

CARBONDALE – The Traveling Vietnam Wall is heading to southern Illinois.

The Southern Illinoisan reported the wall, a three-fifths scale replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C., is scheduled to arrive in Anna on Wednesday afternoon. The wall will then be escorted to Southern Illinois University’s practice football field in Carbondale by fire trucks, military vehicles, municipal vehicles, and local motorcycle clubs.

Officials: Cause of deadly Chicago fire unclear

CHICAGO – Investigators were unable to pinpoint the cause of a Chicago apartment fire that killed four children, although it likely came from an open flame in an apartment on the second floor, fire officials said Tuesday.

The children died Monday when a fire that began shortly

after 3 a.m. raced up a stairwell, trapping them in their bedrooms and forcing their mother and her boyfriend to leap from a third-story window, Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford said.

He told the Chicago Sun-Times that the fire was caused by an open flame in the living room of the second-floor apartment, but investigators were unable to find an exact source because the room had no stove, space heater or electrical line.

“It was most likely caused by a human hand, but we don’t know whether it was accidental or intentional,” Langford said.

Langford said there was no evidence of working smoke detectors in the affected units.

Cardinal George hopes to go to Rome in November

CHICAGO – A new clinical trial of an experimental drug to treat cancer has left Cardinal Francis George feeling good, but not great, he said.

The head of the Archdiocese of Chicago spoke to reporters Monday. George, 77, the spiritual leader of the area’s more than 2 million Roman Catholics since 1997, said he would travel to Europe in November to meet with archbishops in Spain, and then to the Vatican. George canceled a trip to Rome in October because of medical treatment.

Police in 3 states split $9M from pot ring bust

ALBANY, N.Y. – More than 30 law enforcement agencies in New York, Illinois and California are splitting nearly $9 million in assets seized when authorities busted a cross-country marijuana ring.

Federal attorneys in Albany said 33 agencies have received more than $8.9 million of the $12.5 million in assets seized when the pot ring was taken down by authorities in 2009. The rest of the assets went to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Eric Canori ran the operation from his home in Wilton, New York, where authorities seized nearly $1.5 million in cash.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Veterans watchdog: VA managers lied about delays WASHINGTON – Managers at more than a dozen Veterans Affairs medical facilities lied to federal investigators about scheduling practices and other issues, the department’s inspector general said Tuesday.

Richard Griffin, the VA’s acting inspector general, said his office is investigating allegations of wrongdoing at 93 VA sites across the country, including 12 reports that have been completed and submitted to the VA for review.

American recovery drives the dollar sharply higher

By STEVE ROTHWELL The Associated Press NEW YORK – In the world of currencies, the dollar is starting to look like a safe home in a tough neighborhood.

A strengthening American economy, combined with a gloomy outlook for growth elsewhere, is pushing the U.S. currency sharply higher.

The dollar is up 6.4 percent against a group of major currencies since the start of May and has risen in three of the past four months. The U.S. currency climbed Tuesday to its highest level in six years against the Japanese yen, and it’s trading at its highest level in 14 months against the euro.

A continued run-up could mean lower prices for imported cars and crude oil. On the other hand, it also could crimp profits for U.S. companies as their goods become pricier overseas.

A stronger dollar starts with a healthier U.S. economy, and recent news on that front has been mostly good.

Construction, manufacturing and autos sales all have posted solid numbers.

Those healthy signs have allowed the Federal Reserve to wind down its economic stimulus. The Fed’s next step would be to raise shortterm interest rates from their near-zero levels, a move that is expected next year.

Improving growth and the prospect of higher interest rates make the U.S. a more attractive place to invest, prompting people to buy dollars and push up the currency’s value.

Here’s a look at how a stronger dollar could play out across financial markets and the economy:

LOWER COMMODITY PRICES A stronger dollar lowers prices for global commodities, which are priced and traded in dollars.

As the dollar rises, commodities such as oil become more expensive for overseas buyers, who have to convert their weaker currencies into dollars. That curbs demand.

The CRB Index, which tracks the price of a broad range of commodities, has slumped 8 percent since the end of June, while the dollar has gained almost 5 percent over the same period.

MORE MONEY FOR CONSUMERS A stronger dollar is good news for American consumers, and not just those who are traveling overseas. Imported goods such as autos and computers will cost less to buy. That could mean more money in shoppers’ pockets.

The U.S. economy expanded 2.5 percent last year, and the Federal Reserve expects the growth to continue. The Fed forecasts growth of about 2.2 percent this year and 3.1 percent next year.

For American travelers, it’s a little cheaper to swing through Tokyo or Paris than it was at the start of summer. The dollar has gained 6.8 percent against the euro in the past four months. For instance, it now takes $1.29 to buy a euro, compared with $1.39 at the start of May.

First, though, he must find officials to run the defense and interior ministries who will be acceptable to Iraq’s parliament, which approved his C a b i n e t l a t e Haider Monday except al-Abadi for those positions along with a few lesser posts.

The Islamic State group’s lightning advance across much of northern and western Iraq has driven hundreds of thousands of people from their homes since June. It prompted the U.S. to launch aid operations and airstrikes in hopes of boosting the waning efforts of Iraqi and Kurdish forces looking to regain control of lost territory, including five more strikes Monday and Tuesday to protect the Haditha Dam. The success of outreach efforts to Iraq’s alienated Sunni minority will be a key part of international efforts to beat back the Islamic State militants, who also control parts of neighboring Syria. French President Francois Hollande also will travel to Iraq on Friday to help prepare an international conference to back Iraq’s efforts against the group.

Addressing lawmakers, al-Abadi said the central government, which includes all major religious and ethnic groups in Iraq, must make sure that cities and provinces have enough money to deliver basic services. He also emphasized the need to provide housing and education to more than a million people displaced by the militants’ advance.

Ukraine crash report leaves questions

By PETER LEONARD and MIKE CORDER The Associated Press HRABOVE, Ukraine – A child’s jump rope, its yellow handles blistered and charred. A burned book in Tagalog. Chunks of twisted fuselage. More than seven weeks after being shot from the sky, the wreckage from Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 still lay strewn Tuesday across the fields of eastern Ukraine.

As evidence of the July 17 aviation disaster that killed all 298 people on board remained exposed to the elements, investigators hundreds of miles away in the Netherlands – who have not yet visited the crash site because it is deemed too dangerous – released a preliminary report that left key questions unanswered.

There were multiple punctures in the cockpit and front section of the fuselage, it said – damage that could be caused by a missile that detonates in front of its target and peppers it with small chunks of metal.

However, investigators did not identify the source of the fragments or say who fired them.

Although the report drew no conclusions about responsibility, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf said the findings were consistent with “our original assessment, that it was likely shot down by one of

these surface-to-air missiles fired from separatist-controlled territory in eastern Ukraine.”

“I’m unaware of other objects or ways that it could be brought down that are consistent with that finding,” Harf said of the report.

“It highlights questions for which Russia must still answer.”

The slow pace of the inquiry, its cautious preliminary conclusion and the fact that wreckage and human remains are still lying in Ukraine frustrated and angered victims’ families.

“Well, I don’t know what to say about this,” said Samira Calehr, a Dutch mother who lost two sons, 11-year-old Miguel and 19-year-old Shaka, in the crash.

She said that she wants the people responsible for downing the plane brought to justice “as soon as possible,” pausing for emphasis on every word. “I want to know who killed my children.”

Amid Liberia surge, Ebola case toll over 4,200

By SARAH DiLORENZO and MARIA CHENG The Associated Press DAKAR, Senegal – A surge in Ebola infections in Liberia is driving a spiraling outbreak in West Africa that is increasingly putting health workers at risk as they struggle to treat an overwhelming number of patients.

A higher proportion of health workers has been infected in this outbreak than in any previous one. The latest infection was of a doctor with the World Health Organization treating patients in Sierra Leone. The organiza-

tion gave no details, but an American who became infected while working in West Africa landed in the U.S. Tuesday to get treatment at Emory University Hospital.

This is the second WHO staffer to be infected in Sierra Leone, and the U.N. health agency said Tuesday that after an investigation of the first case, staffers battling Ebola there now have better working conditions – including larger, more private quarters.

The outbreak sweeping West Africa is thought to have killed more than 2,200 people, and public health

experts agree that it is out of control. More than 4,200 people have believed to have been sickened in Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Senegal.

The disease is spreading particularly quickly in Liberia, where WHO figures published Tuesday showed that more than 500 new cases were recorded in a week. The organization warned Monday that it expects thousands of new cases in the country in the coming weeks.

Sierra Leone said it is also expecting to uncover potentially hundreds of new cases during a three-day

nationwide lockdown later this month. While people are confined to their homes, thousands of volunteers will go house to house to search for those infected, Sidie Yahya Tunis, a Health Ministry spokesman said Tuesday.

Health workers in Liberia have also paid a heavy toll; 160 have been sickened in that country, and 80 have died, according to Karin Landgren, the U.N. envoy to the country.

Health workers are at particular risk because of their close contact with the sick since Ebola is only spread by contact with bodily fluids of those who have symptoms.

No more running from justice for domestic violence The most disturbing comment in the wake of Ray Rice’s firing did not come from the players’ union.

Astonishingly, it came from the woman who runs a shelter for victims of domestic violence.

The Baltimore Ravens cut the running back Monday, and the NFL suspended him indefinitely because he punched Janay (Palmer) Rice, who was then his fiancée and is now his wife.

Two months ago, the league suspended Rice for just two games. Vut Commissioner Roger Goodell increased the penalty after a security video surfaced showing Rice punching the woman so hard that she fell to the floor and had to be dragged, apparently unconscious, from an elevator in a casino at Atlantic City, New Jersey.

On Aug. 28, Goodell informed team owners that the league’s new policy would be a six-game, unpaid suspension for violating the NFL’s domestic violence policy and that a second incident would result in a lifetime ban.

Goodell suddenly found religion after an outcry over the two-game wrist-slap.

Maybe it was an epiphany.

Either way, it took only three days to find a test case.

San Francisco 49er defensive end Ray McDonald was arrested on domestic violence charges Aug. 31. Following his release on bond, McDonald only would say that the truth would come out.

There also is Joe Mixon, the celebrated University of Oklahoma recruit. In a video recorded July 25, Mixon can be seen punching Amelia Rae Molitor after she pushes and slaps him. Molitor said she suffered a broken jaw, cheek bone, sinus and orbital bone.

The university suspended him for the season. Mixon pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor assault charges.

The disturbing comment, quoted in The New York Times, came from Judy Harris Kluger, executive director for Sanctuary for Families.

“The Ravens have sent a strong message against domestic violence,” she said. “It was impossible to ignore or explain away.”

Kluger implies the only reason the Ravens fired their player was because his actions couldn’t be explained away.

The implication is that if there had been a way around it – a wag of the finger that let him keep playing – all would have agreed to the scheme.

And that is why domestic violence plagues our country, affecting one person in four.

There is no excuse. And there must be no looking the other way, no matter how fast the abuser can run.

Tuition at University of Illinois needs to be more affordable for Illinoisans SPRINGFIELD – More often than not, when students receive an admission letter from the University of Illinois, they opt to attend another college.

That’s a sad state of affairs for Illinois’ flagship university.

The U of I is a terrific school. My father graduated from its Champaign campus 54 years ago with a degree in veterinary medicine; I received a master’s degree from its Springfield campus back in 1988, when it still was called Sangamon State; and my niece graduated this year from the U of I with a bachelor’s degree.

So I value the university

But, folks, right now the university is pricing itself out of the market.

That information came out this month when the agenda for a U of I Trustees meeting was released.

The reason most often cited for youngsters telling the U of I “no” is the school costs too much to attend.

That’s hardly surprising.

An incoming freshman at the U of I is expected to plunk down $12,036 a year for tui-

tion. That doesn’t count room and board, which can double the price tag for a year.

Officials at Illinois say they may need to offer more in the way of financial aid to attract students offered admission.

A more effective solution would be to lower tuition cost for all students.

There are a lot of ways this can be done. Trimming administrative costs is one. Increasing teaching time for full-time professors and scooting more employees over to a defined contribution retirement plan would all be steps in the right direction.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

Steve Rauschenberger of Elgin. “By the time I was Senate Appropriations chairman, the administration was admitting that full professors were carrying a class schedule of under 12 hours. And that 12 includes things that are officially counted as classroom time but aren’t – like committee work. … So that increases the cost to the university when you reduce the amount of teaching time by your highest-paid employees.”

U of I spokesman Tom Hardy said professors have responsibilities outside the classroom such as research, office time and public engagement.

Still, Illinoisans want a university that provides an affordable education to its

youngsters.

Increasingly, those young people are graduating with decades’ worth of student loan debt to pay the university’s ever-escalating tuition.

To be sure, there also is a correlation between state government’s dire financial condition and the university’s mounting tuition prices.

As the state spends more on its growing Medicaid program and pensions for government workers, there is less financial support to give to state universities.

This means our next generation is paying through the nose to further its education.

Sure it’s expensive to go to college just about anywhere these days. But other states are charging considerably less for in-state students to attend their flagship universities. It costs $2,200 less a year at the University of Texas, $3,957 less at the University of Iowa and $3,662 at the University of North Carolina.

That pension alone would cover the tuitions of 37 students.

“The tournament over the weekend, we kind of struggled,’’ senior Jessica Karalow said. “We had a real good practice yesterday, and we came out hard [Tuesday].’’

Minooka opened its Southwest Prairie Conference season Tuesday night with a convincing 25-9, 25-15 win over visiting Plainfield South.

After the Indians didn’t perform the way they wanted

at Edwardsville, coach Chris Hoelscher pointed out what was necessary for her team going forward.

“Be very focused and let’s win the right way, not because the other team makes more mistakes but because we’re forcing them to and because we’re earning our own points,’’ Hoelscher said. “That’s the big focus.’’

The focus was apparent in the first set Tuesday as Minooka (6-2, 1-0) put together an 8-0 run to go ahead, 12-3. Aly Gagnon had a couple aces in that stretch, along with kills

“I felt we’d be prepared and we came out, ‘Oh no, it’s Minooka.’ Everything we’d been working on kind of went out the window.’’

NEW LENOX – It wasn’t the type of start that Providence Catholic volleyball coach Rachel Ellingson was looking from her squad in their home opener.

Lincoln-Way Central used a 15-5 advantage in kills during the opening set of Tuesday’s nonconference match to grab the upper hand following a 25-21 win.

But the Celtics responded by collecting 20 kills the rest of the way plus seven of their 10 aces in the next two sets as they rallied for a 21-25, 25-17, 25-20 victory.

“This was our first home match, and we didn’t serve or pass the best in the first game,” Ellingson said. “But we got the jitters out and came back hard in the second game and still won with six serving errors. We served them tough and did a lot of good things.

Our team is extremely young, but I see them learning day by day, and that’s always promising.”

In the second set, the Celtics (5-3) used a 4-0 run to build a 15-10 lead as Rachel Alles (five kills, 14 assists, four aces) served an ace and Katie Compagno (six kills, three blocks) added a kill.

The Knights (1-3) could get no closer than two points after that.

Providence jumped to an even more-decisive advantage in the finale after building an early 15-6 lead. Alles had three aces during that run, while Compagno and Alles contributed two kills apiece.

But the Knights didn’t toss in the towel and actually pulled to within two points at 20-18 and 21-19 before the Celtics were able to close things out.

In the opener, Central used six kills from Candace Finnin (10 kills) and five kills from Toni Leitshuh (12 kills, 10 digs) to gradually build a safe advantage.

Both Jenna Meyers and Finnin had two kills each after assists from Mariel Leibovitz (28 assists, seven blocks) during a 5-0 run that put the Knights up, 15-9. The Celtics got no closer than three points back in that set.

“Providence kept serving us tough,” Knights coach Jodi Frigo said. “They have some nice power players who were serving nice and deep, and we just didn’t adjust quick enough. We’re working with different lineups every day and are still piecing things together. We’re definitely young, with only four seniors. But the girls are tough, and they want to work hard.”

Lamping preps Minooka pitchers for more

By ROB OESTERLE roesterle@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Over the last couple decades, the list of dominant pitchers in the Minooka baseball program dwarfs that of virtually any other school in the state.

Names that immediately come to mind include Mike Foltynewicz (with the Houston Astros), Tony Bucciferro (Michigan State University: first all-time in innings pitched, second in strikeouts, third in wins, then drafted by the White Sox), Jake Butler (University of St. Francis’ career leader in wins and strikeouts, in the Detroit Tigers’ organization), Mitch Vogrin (Illinois State University), Collin Walker (Bradley University), Gary Perinar (University of Minnesota, drafted by the Tigers), John Corcoran (Butler University), Joe Stover (Joliet Junior College’s career win leader and Ohio University) and Josh Jiminez (JJC and Illinois Wesleyan University) .

There is a common theme among these pitchers that had success not only on the high school level but in college and beyond.

For 26 years, Jim Lamping has been the pitching coach for the Minooka program, serving under former head coaches Rick Beeler, Dan Goggins and Bob Tyrell, and current coach Jeff Petrovic.

Before that, Lamping coached at Lewis for four years and at JJC for two. He and Petrovic have been teamed with Derek Rapsky as a trio with the Indians since 2005.

“As a head coach, it was huge to be able to have a pitching coach like Jim to lean on and learn from,” Goggins said of Lamping. “Jim’s rapport with the kids was great, and he stays calm and even-keeled.

He knows that kids have a lot of stuff going on their heads on the mound, and he is able to keep them calm as well.

“But the biggest thing with him was that he was able to work with what the kid brought to the table. He didn’t try to force them to be something they weren’t. That, and he will teach kids pitches that most high-schoolers don’t

The crown jewel in Lamping’s stable of pitchers – Foltynewicz – is a 6-foot-4, 220-pound, bearded man with long blond hair who can launch a baseball from his hand at speeds that sometimes eclipse 100 mph. Think Thor, but instead of a hammer, he’s throwing a baseball.

In contrast, Lamping himself is an older version of Greg Maddux. To look at him, one would think he was the team’s stat keeper or business man-

ager. Instead, he’s the mastermind behind one of the most consistent high school pitching operations in the baseball-rich state of Illinois.

“It’s not just us,” Lamping said about the Minooka coaching staff’s role in developing players. “We have great youth programs in Minooka and Channahon, and the junior high programs at Minooka, Channahon and Troy do a great job of preparing the kids. By the time they get to us, we just have some fine-tuning to do.”

But get Lamping on the subject of pitching, and be prepared to find at least a halfhour gone.

“I have always thought my

job was to get the guys ready to pitch at the next level,” he said. “And that’s different for each pitcher. Some guys are going on to pitch for a Division III school, and some will go to Division I or – in the case of Mike Foltynewicz – in the pros.”

That’s what happens when a player sees his fastball velocity progress from 83 mph as a sophomore to 90 as a junior to 92-94 as a senior.

“In Mike’s junior year, we knew he was going to be Division I,” Lamping said. “In his senior year, it was pretty clear it was University of Texas or the pros.

“We knew he could throw 94 to 97 miles an hour; but at that next level he was going to, everyone could hit that. In high school around here, he could just blow it by guys. But we knew he needed to work on his breaking ball in order

to succeed at the next level, so that’s what we worked on.”

Some pitching coaches have certain methods they feel work, and some try to force mechanics on pitchers. Lamping is more lenient with mechanics, and that method has served both him and his pitchers well.

“I am more about working with what they have,” Lamping said. “Each pitcher has his own unique arm slot, and I try to leave it there. It’s what is comfortable for them, and their body has reached that decision over the years. I am not going to change it. I think that’s why our kids don’t have as many injuries.

“I try to work with them on positioning their fingers on the ball to get more spin on it one way or another to increase movement. I want them to think about one thing when they are on the mound, and that’s the target. If they are worried about their mechanics, they aren’t focusing on the target. And the target isn’t the catcher’s mitt or a shinguard.

It’s a target the size of a dime.

To me, movement, command and change of speeds is much more important than just velocity.”

Command is a word that came up with Bucciferro. He throws with near-surgical precision, as evidenced by his 21128 strikeout-to-walk ratio so far in the minor leagues.

“Coach Lamping knows his stuff,” Bucciferro said. “He always told me that if things aren’t going well, you have to go back to your pitching personality. Don’t try to be something you’re not. Even now, when things aren’t going so well for me, I still try to do that, and things tend to turn back around.

“I only want to worry about what I can control, and that’s throwing strikes. That has been preached in the White Sox organization since I got here, and coaches Lamping and [Jeff] Petrovic back in Minooka and my coaches at Michigan State did, too. It’s just been hammered in my head to have command of my pitches and throw strikes.”

Reading the zone still a challenge for Bears

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – The zone read isn’t going away any time soon, and the Bears know they’ll see a lot of it Sunday night, and going forward.

Plus, their performance against the Bills gave more reason for other offenses to use it. A lot.

“You know San Fran is going to come out and run some of that zone read. I wouldn’t be surprised if we get that for the rest of the year,” Bears defensive end Willie Young said Monday. “That’s not just singling us out; it’s across the league. Everybody’s buying stock in that particular play, so we’re just going to have to be sound for stopping that zone read.”

The Bears gave up three “explosive” plays, as coach Marc Trestman called them,

from the Bills’ read zone, in Sunday’s 23-20 loss.

“When you look at the tape and we sit in there as coaches, we know they’re stoppable plays, we just have to do a better job,” Trestman said.

The Bills averaged 5.8 yards a carry, thanks in large part to a 47-yard run by Anthony Dixon and the 38-yarder by Fred Jackson in overtime. EJ Manuel fooled the defense on his rushing touchdown, and his throwing touchdown to C.J. Spiller.

Trestman agreed with Young, that the Bears expect to see it “certainly for the next two weeks,” and now they need to improve in stopping it, and fast.

“I think we just have to continue to work on our rules and make sure guys stay disciplined in their rules. There is somebody for the back, there is somebody for the quarter-

Leaving early: The Bears will head west Friday, one day early, in prep for their Sunday night game against the 49ers.

“That’s not unusual for teams flying east to west to leave a day early. We’ll leave

after practice, get in there, get a good night’s sleep, get acclimated,” Trestman said. The Bears will leave after Friday’s practice and have a walkthrough Saturday morning.

Banged-up O-line: Trestman had no updates on the injured players – Roberto Garza and Matt Slauson – although reports indicate that both have high ankle sprains, an injury that can keep players out for several games. Both Trestman and Jermon Bushrod did praise backups Michael Ola and Brian de la Puente, who filled in admirably against a tough Bills front.

New Bear: The Bears added another safety who potentially could contribute on special teams by signing rookie Ahmad Dixon off the Vikings’ practice squad and waiving cornerback Demontre Hurst.

Dixon led the Cowboys in tackles this preseason.

The problem with a weekly commitment to film study and grading out performances is that watching stinkers like the Bears’ upset loss to the Bills on Sunday over and over can get old really fast.

What’s interesting, though, is as frustrating as the outcome against Buffalo was, individually most of the Bears weren’t all that bad.

The problem is that none of them were particularly good. At the end of the day, the Bears were just a very average football team, and the Bills were marginally better than average.

Matt Forte, Kyle Long, Jermon Bushrod, Willie Young and Jeremiah Ratliff actually played pretty well, Michael Ola and Brian de la Puente were more than stout coming off the bench, and only Stephen Paea, Ryan Mundy and Chris Conte jumped off the tape because of their struggles.

Score Jay Cutler a B- at quarterback. He made some nice reads, nice throws

Bautista’s big hit helps Toronto beat Cubs

By IAN HARRISON The Associated Press TORONTO – Jose Bautista extended his hitting streak to 13 games with another key swing for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Bautista hit a go-ahead, three-run double in the seventh inning, and Toronto rallied to beat the Cubs, 9-2, Tuesday night.

“Jose has been one of the best hitters in baseball over the last few years,” manager John Gibbons said. “He’s got the knack of doing something big when it counts, when we need something.”

Bautista’s hitting streak matches a career best. He also hit in 13 straight from April 19 to May 3.

“He’s clutch,” teammate Mark Buehrle said. “He’s been that way for years. He showed it tonight.”

Buehrle (12-9) allowed two runs and 10 hits in seven innings to stop a six-start winless streak, helping the Blue Jays improve to 6-2 in September.

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – When Kelly George’s brother died four years ago at the age of 31 from health issues related to his weight, she knew it was time to make some lifestyle changes.

“I had to get healthier,” said George, a former Plainfield resident.

At just 34, George, now of Aurora, has degenerative cartilage in her knees, but when she became more active, the pain receded, she said.

Emboldened by the results, George tackled her diet, became a vegetarian and started an organic garden.

The garden spurred another change.

“They say that one way to get over an addiction is to replace the addiction with a good action,” George said.

“Instead of drinking, I was spending all my time in the garden.”

The transition to vegetarianism had its bumps, as George still cooks meat for her fiance Jeff Niccum and her four sons – Seth Davis, 16; Lazarus George, 15; Samien

Instead, George created no-bake recipes or adapted the ones she had to microwave and toaster-oven. When using a toaster oven, bake at 10 to 25 degrees lower than the recipe recommends, George said.

Although George has sold her products at vendor events and online, George’s ultimate goal is to own a farm with an attached cafe and bakery, stocked with goods produced from her farm and delivered with good thoughts.

“We think we should live our lives in a natural kind of way, and this is an opportunity to teach others to do the same,” George said. “When we make orders, we put all our energy and love into them.”

In today’s deal, South is in two no-trump. How should he plan the play after West leads the heart queen and East signals with his nine?

South starts with six top tricks: two spades, one heart and three diamonds. There are two routes to eight tricks: four spades, one heart and three diamonds; or two spades, one heart and five diamonds. Getting four spade tricks seems to require the finesse to work – a 50 percent chance; while collecting five diamond winners is a 54 percent shot.

So it seems right to play on diamonds. Here, though, when the diamonds break badly, South does not have a hand entry to take the spade finesse. He will cash the spade ace and king to drop the queen, but that only provides three tricks in the suit, not four.

The right line, after winning with the heart ace, is to lead the spade jack to encourage West to cover if he has the queen. But after he plays low, declarer wins with dummy’s king and cashes the spade ace. When the queen drops, South leads a spade to his nine, then takes dummy’s three top diamonds and spade 10 for his contract.

If the spade queen does not appear, declarer needs diamonds to run.

Dehydration often culprit causing brittle nails Dear Doctor K: As I’ve gotten older, my fingernails have become very brittle. They chip, break and split easily. I’ve also noticed ridges. What can I do?

Dear Reader: Many of my patients notice that their fingernails become thinner, more brittle and fragile with age.

Nails may split lengthwise, or separate in thin layers at the tips. The nails may look different as well. They may become yellowed or dull, and many develop thin, vertical ridges.

Brittle nails usually result from dehydration. Your nails may be dehydrated if you live in a dry climate, frequently wash and dry your hands, or if you often use nail polish remover.

Here are some things you can do to keep your nails healthy and combat dehydration: • Avoid long hot baths or showers.

• Always moisturize your hands after washing and drying them.

• Use a moisturizer (petroleum jelly is fine) on your hands and nails at bedtime.

• Avoid prolonged exposure to cold, dry weather. Wear

• Trim your nails regularly to keep them short and smoothly rounded at the tips.

• Protect fingernails from injury. Wear gloves if you are working with your hands.

• Don’t bite your nails or the protective cuticles around them.

• Use a nail hardener or clear polish to strengthen the nails.

• Don’t use nail polish remover more than twice a month.

• If you get manicures, stick with reputable nail salons that sterilize instruments. Better yet, bring your own.

• Trim your nails only after soaking them or after a bath or shower. They’ll be less likely to split.

• File your nails in one direction only, and use a fine emery board or file.

• In hot weather or when exercising, stay well hydrated.

The vertical lines or “ridg-

ing” you mentioned is a natural part of nail growth. Ridging tends to happen more as we get older, and I don’t know of any way to eliminate it.

Finally, don’t fall for the many myths and misconceptions about nail care. For example, eating gelatin or soaking your nails in it will not make your nails healthier or longer.

I recall the first time a patient asked me about her brittle nails. Particularly since this patient also had serious heart and lung disease, I wondered why she was bringing it up.

I surely hadn’t been taught anything in medical school about problems with fingernails.

A senior colleague gave me some wise advice: “People care about their appearance – a lot.

Some people care more about their appearance than about their life-threatening illnesses.

Don’t dismiss those concerns.”

Teen has right to happiness Dr. Wallace: I’m 19 and have been married to my husband, who is 33, for seven months.

We attend the same church, and he was also our Christian youth director. I came from a troubled home. My father was physically abusive to my mother and me, and I’m sure he’s an alcoholic, or at least headed that way.

Ever since I met him, I really liked my now-husband. He brought hope and stability to my life. When he asked me to marry him, I jumped at the chance, and we have a very happy marriage.

My very best friend and I have been friends since we started first grade together. We really bonded when we got to high school because she and I had similar situations at home. She advised me not to marry my husband because she thought he was too old for me. She and I both have jobs and, now that I’m married, we don’t see that much of each other. We talk on the phone and sometimes get together for lunch on a Saturday.

The last couple of times I’ve had lunch with Karla, she has had unkind things to say about my husband. She always says, “I think your husband ... “ but she is just guessing and she’s usually wrong.

Last week, she told me that he was too old for me and that someday I’d wind up being his nurse and a lot of my years would be wasted.

She told me to my face that she would advise me to get divorced now before we start having children.

I love my husband and enjoy our life together, but I’m getting tired of my friend’s negative remarks about my

husband, and especially about being his nurse for years and years.

What can I do to get my friend to talk about more pleasant things and stop belittling my husband? I try to change the subject, but she continues. – Nameless, New Orleans, Louisiana Dear Nameless: Your friend is an unhappy young woman who foolishly thinks she can regain a full-time friend by spreading poisonous doubts about her husband. Simply put, she’s jealous of your husband.

By her incessant negativity, she’s saying: “You have to choose: him or me.”

Well, the choice is obvious – it has to be your husband. Stop the lunches and phone calls with her. Write her a letter or email and tell her that your husband is the most important person in your life, and you’re sick of the way she bad-mouths him.

Tell her you no longer want to see her, at least for the time being, but for the sake of the longtime friendship, you’ll consider resuming your friendship in the future.

Also tell her that, if she can accept what you ask, she should put a note in writing to you. If she writes saying she’s sorry for her unwarranted remarks about your husband, it’s up to you to decide whether she’s trustworthy and if the friendship is worth continuing.

Just remember, you have a right to your happiness.

Searching for God in songs of Hiss Golden Messenger

By CHRIS RICHARDS The Washington Post DURHAM, N.C. – Michael Taylor is ready to talk about God. But first, dinner. So, he hops into his Subaru Forester – a vehicle with enough room for child seats and guitar amps – and drives off to a restaurant in downtown Durham. Inside, there are fancy pizzas, bartenders who know his name and his manager, Brad Cook, who’s sipping a tequila gimlet and radiating good vibes. He clamps Taylor in a bear hug and quickly launches a tiny debate over which song Taylor should sing on “Letterman” in November.

“Dude!” Cook says. “Trust me!”

Taylor is a trusting dude, a devoted dad and, as Hiss Golden Messenger, an author of still-water folk songs that dive deep into the complications of faith. His superb new album, “Lateness of Dancers,” is being released Tuesday, his 39th birthday, by Merge Records, the macro-indie label headquartered just a few blocks away from this pizza spot. The songs on it feel both ambiguously sweet and deeply personal, but ultimately confident in their own vagueness.

“Mike’s level of thoughtfulness and deliberation is pretty unique,” his labelmate and sometimes-collaborator William Tyler says later over the phone. “His songs aren’t about sexy topics – they’re about being a father and searching for your place in the universe.

I think he’s a gospel singer in a lot of ways.”

But not in every way.

During his new album’s finale, Taylor sings, “Take the good news, carry it away,” refusing to indicate whether that good news should be shared or shredded.

Michael Taylor, who records as Hiss Golden Messenger, near his home in Durham, North Carolina. inhabits this highly charged middle space, the chasm between faith and doubt. His strongest melodies simultaneously suggest jubilation and despair, comfort and restlessness. His singing is cool and sharp, somewhere between James Taylor’s serenity and Bob Dylan’s agita. He never sounds stuck in the middle. He sounds as if he’s conquering the middle.

“This combination of things that I do – the lyrical content, the rhythmic content,” he says, “it’s this weird alchemy that belongs to me.”

Concurrently, his search for God has been every bit as unique. But maybe not as successful.

After dinner, he heads back to the house where his wife, Abby, has already put their kids – Elijah, 5 years, and Ione, 14 months – to bed. Taylor disappears into the kitchen and returns carrying four beers and a bottle of Glenlivet.

“C’mon.”

He tip-toes down to a small room in the basement where he writes his songs. There are four white walls, a white

paper lantern, vines of white Christmas lights and an old turntable. He cracks a beer and drops the needle on a Byrds song – “Old Blue,” one of the first songs that made Taylor wonder whether he should try writing some songs of his own.

“I felt like I had struck on this thing,” Taylor says of those early songs. “This was my musical voice that I’d been searching for for so long.”

Taylor grew up in Orange County, riding skateboards in the California sunbeams. He joined a hardcore punk band, Ex-Ignota, while at college in Santa Barbara, then moved to San Francisco to lead the Court and Spark, a folk-rock group that burned brightly, then quickly burned out.

Exhausted and discouraged, Taylor relocated to North Carolina in 2007 to get his master’s in folklore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“It would be a great way to restart my brain, which had just atrophied from years of weed and drinking and drugs,” Taylor says of the move.

By 2009, everything was

different. He was a graduate navigating fatherhood, ample student loan debt, unpaid heating bills and unresolved thoughts about higher powers.

“I was baptized Episcopalian, but my parents had a hard time with church, so I don’t really have that in my background,” Taylor says.

“But I’m not saying I don’t believe in God. I’m skeptical.

And the people telling me God does exist don’t seem like reputable sources. I see God being used as a tool for violence and mayhem. Whether it’s the North Carolina GOP totally dismantling social services for low-income people and the elderly, or ISIS causing chaos, or Israel and Palestine killing each other over their prophets.”

He sets down his guitar.

“It never seems like American Christians are ever following the teachings of Jesus as I understand them to be – and they’re not that difficult to understand. I don’t want to be dissuaded from this idea of belief by people who claim to be experts on Jesus Christ.

But to me, they seem ignorant.

So I’m trying to find this other way to faith. But I’m looking for a back door.”

He pries the cap from a sweaty bottle of beer.

“It feels funny to be talking about America writ large, but faith is a big part of American culture and I want to feel like I have some sort of sense of what that is, and what it means, and a sense of the good that can come from that. ... I don’t want to be talking about music with everybody all the time. I want another connection that’s based on love and wisdom – what I think of when I think of the teachings of Jesus.”

And then he laughs.

“But I’m having a hard time finding that.”
