SENECA – Jim and Carla Bianchetta of Morris are active bicyclists and often find themselves cruising the back roads to Seneca, sometimes alone, other times with fellow members of the Joliet Bicycle Club.

A few weeks ago Carla Bianchetta was doing her typical Morris-to-Seneca ride when she stopped at Casey’s General Store in downtown Seneca for a break and to buy something to drink. While there she saw a collection can for a local resident – and it was for a used bicycle.

“I typically stop at the BP. This time I went to Casey’s and saw the can, so I mentioned it to the bike club,” she said.

After members discussed helping the resident, they sent Jim Bianchetta to Seneca to get in contact with the person needing a bike.

“I was going to drop my phone number in the can and ask them to call me,” he said.

“When I got there the can was gone.”

But a missing collection can wasn’t going to stop Joliet Bicycle Club members from helping. Jim Bianchetta left a number with the manager of the store.

The person needing the new bicycle is Jason Orsburn, a Seneca man with Spina Bifida who recently had a fundraiser for new special shoes he needs in order to walk properly.

When his fundraiser was set up for the shoes, it stated any extra money would go toward a new bicycle.

Jason Orsburn Seneca resident seem like simple requests, but for Orsburn it’s how he gets around. He doesn’t drive and has to walk or ride wherever he goes.

The special shoes needed cost more than $1,800 a pair, and the used bicycle he was saving for was $300.

“The bike I have got old, I’ve wore it out,” Orsburn

said. “It’s exercise and my only means of transportation.”

Phil Furmanski, president of the bicycle club, said after a few phone calls members knew exactly what Orsburn wanted and they started working toward buying a new three-wheel bicycle, including a basket in the back to carry Orsburn’s cane or items home from the store.

“The opportunity presented itself and we took it,” Furmanski said.

The organization also has given bikes to park districts, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will and Grundy Counties, a veterans home and Easter Seals.

Nowell Park facility would meet demand for East Side recreation

JOLIET – Plans for an indoor recreational facility at Nowell Park are moving ahead, although estimated construction dates have been moved back because of problems that have developed with the site.

The latest estimate for the start of construction is spring 2016 after the Joliet Park District learned its plan was at odds with a county right-ofway. Park officials described the issue as a minor one that will be worked out, and they expect to put the project out for bids in the fall.

The $5.5 million recreation center was the biggest single project in a bond referendum that received support from 70 percent of voters in November.

Park officials believe they have enthusiastic support from the community on the project and see it as a response to a call for more services on the East Side of the city.

Park board President Glen Marcum said surveys done before the referendum vote showed strong support.

“The Nowell Park facility came back rated very high. I think that’s why the referendum passed with 70 percent of the vote,” Marcum said. “It’s going to benefit the East Side because they’ll have an exercise facility. But it’s going to benefit the whole city because of the indoor soccer field and indoor baseball facility.”

The recreation facility is planned to be 35,900 square feet in size. The plan includes: • A field house with field turf that can be used for indoor soccer games and indoor baseball practice; • Portable floors that can be put over the field turf for basketball and volleyball; • A fitness center with locker rooms and showers;

• Multipurpose rooms that could be used for community meetings or birthday parties; • Walking and biking paths on the outside of the facility.

In some ways, the project

may be considered a complement to the Inwood Athletic Club on the West Side of the city. East Side residents have voiced their opinions over the years that the older part of

town was not getting the same attention after the park district opened a fitness center at Inwood.

City Councilman Terry Morris, whose District Five includes Nowell Park, said an indoor recreational center has been high on the list of

services sought by East Side residents.

“I think this is a great start in fulfilling the requests that I’ve been getting for facilities on the East Side,” Morris said.

Amazon will have agency handle hiring Joliet City Council to consider special-use permit for temp staffing agency

JOLIET – Integrity Staffing Solutions – a temporary staffing agency that provides workers for Amazon.com warehouses across the U.S. – aims to set up shop on West Jefferson Street to hire temporary workers for the online retail giant’s new Joliet location.

The Delaware-based company is seeking a special-use permit from the Joliet City Council to house the temporary staffing agency in an existing building at 3103 W. Jefferson St. Integrity Staffing Solutions has entered into a fouryear contract with Amazon to supply temporary workers for the company’s retrofitted 500,000-square-foot warehouse in the Laraway Crossings Business Park,

The retail giant has estimated its planned fulfillment center – where incoming online orders are received from affiliated stores to be processed and filed – would bring about 1,000 jobs to Joliet. Amazon announced the new Joliet fulfillment center in August.

But it’s unclear whether those jobs will be full-time or part-time. Job listings on the agency’s website are described as “temporary,” with pay rates “up to $13.50 per hour,” with the potential for medical and dental benefits.

Joliet Councilman Terry Morris said Monday he is concerned about the types of jobs that companies like Amazon promise to bring when coming to Joliet.

Joliet City Manager Jim Hock said not in Amazon’s case.

The company did not enter into an incentives agreement with

the city of Joliet, where the city could require that Amazon hire a certain number of fulltime or part-time employees, or hire locally.

After the meeting, Hock said Amazon never gave indication that the company would hire a specific number of part-time or full-time workers or whether it would contract with a temporary staffing agency.

“That’s not something they shared with us,” Hock said.

According to Integrity Staffing’s website, the agency hires qualified candidates to work on assignments at Amazon warehouses “on a temporary basis” and that “assignments vary in length.”

“There is no guarantee to the length of the assignment. Length of employment is based on client’s business needs which can change,” the job listing states.

Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk requested Monday night that Hock obtain a breakdown of part-time and full-time positions from Amazon.

Mark Koenig, who spoke on behalf of the temp agency Monday, said the Amazon hires will cover the majority of the agency’s purpose in Joliet, but the company may work with a small number of other businesses. The staffing agency also tries to find potential employees temp-tohire and full-time positions, Koenig said.

It’s unclear when exactly the Amazon.com center will be operational, but it has been suggested by the property owner that Amazon wants to be up and running before the holidays.

The Joliet City Council will consider the special-use permit during Tuesday night’s council meeting.

JJC board elects new officers following resignations

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College Board of Trustees reorganized Monday after two members resigned last week and plan to fill the rest of the seats by October.

Another special meeting will be held this week to interview candidates for a seat on the board.

At Monday’s special meeting, the remaining JJC trustees – Robert Wunderlich, Michael O’Connell, Maureen Broderick and Andrew Mihelich – elected new officers of the board. Student Trustee Saleh Ruman also was present after being absent since the July 28 special meeting.

Trustees elected new officers Monday after former Chairwoman Tina Markley

and Trustee Barb Adams resigned from the board at an Aug. 25 meeting. Markley criticized trustees for a “backdoor attempt” at public humiliation, engaging in internal board politics and lack of guidance.

She, along with Adams, who resigned without expla-

nation, then walked out of the board room at the beginning of the meeting. Trustees said they were confused by Markley’s criticisms.

Markley became chairwoman after Jeff May resigned in July for health reasons.

Now the board is tasked with filling out the rest of the seats, which Wunderlich said should be completed by an October meeting. The board is meant to have seven elected members, plus an appointed student trustee.

Another special meeting will be at 6 p.m. Thursday to interview between four to five candidates out of the 17 who applied thus far for May’s seat, he said. Trustees will conduct those interviews in closed session and seat a new person at the Sept. 8 meeting, he said.

Since July, JJC has sent

out two notices for open board seats, the first after May’s resignation and the second when Markley and Adams resigned.

The deadline for trustee applications is 5 p.m. on Friday.

Wunderlich said at an upcoming October meeting, the seats vacated by Adams and Markley will be filled.

“We’ll be all done. I hope,” he said.

One former trustee has shown interest in applying.

Susan Marie Klen, who lost her seat in the April 7 election, posted on her Facebook page “Friends of Susan Marie Klen” on Aug. 27 that she was thinking of applying because “our amazing JJC is in danger.” She said she was willing to apply to “help the board quit worrying about politics.”

Foundation to celebrate Gospel Fest

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Harvey Brooks Foundation will hold a festival Labor Day weekend that also raises money for its community programs.

From Friday until Sunday,

the Joliet nonprofit organization will present the 11th annual Gospel Fest at 100 McDonough St., Joliet. The festival will feature gospel music, children’s activities and local vendors in Joliet’s southeast side.

“It’s basically geared to-

ward youth and a nice little activity for the holiday weekend for families to come out and enjoy,” said Christina Bias, Harvey Brooks Foundation volunteer.

Gospel Fest runs from 8 to 10 p.m. Friday, noon to 10 p.m.

Saturday and 3 to 10 p.m. Sun-

day.

Visitors who come to the festival will hear music from local choirs, singers and musicians, as well as the special “Kids Zone,” with rides and games, Bias said. The event also offers food.

The festival was started

by the late Tony Ray, who for eight years worked to “bring hope and encouragement” to the Joliet area, Bias wrote in an email. The festival also is meant to keep his legacy alive among residents, she wrote.

Girl Scout’s project extends path at humane society

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Girl Scouting has been more than just selling cookies for 16-year-old Claire Randall.

The Plainfield Central High School junior raised more than $700 to install a 300-foot walking path for the Will County Humane Society in her bid for the Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouts. And that included selling her own bike in efforts to raise money for the project to benefit the Shorewood-based shelter.

On Saturday, she led a team of about 30 volunteers install-

ing the 5-foot wide path made of limestone screening.

“It was a really awesome feeling,” Claire said. “I put a lot of work into it and didn’t know how it would turn out. It really worked better than I expected.”

In addition to selling her bike for $150, Claire used the $250 in her Girl Scout account from selling Girl Scout cookies and raised $220 through a GoFundMe page to help pay for materials.

Claire said she knew she wanted to do something for her Gold Award project that would help animals.

Horkey said many Boy Scouts have worked on Eagle Scout projects for the Humane Society, including raising money for the pavilion and outdoor runs. But Claire was the first Girl Scout with such a project.

In Girl Scouts, the Gold Award is the equivalent of the Boy Scouts’ Eagle Scout project. It represents commitment to solving a community problem. For the Humane Society,

that problem was finding a comfortable walking path for the 35 to 40 dogs at the no-kill shelter in Shorewood, which sits on three acres of land.

While Claire’s project covers a quarter of the planned trail through the Humane Society land, Horkey said the it sets a starting point for future volunteer projects.

While that project cost Claire her bicycle, it wasn’t much of an issue for her.

“It was small and a little bit too slow anyway,” she said.

PLAINFIELD – George Jadwin has poured more than $16,000 into bringing out the character of his Suzuki Boulevard motorcycle.

The joy he gets out of showing and drawing attention to his bike is one reason why he likes riding out to cruise nights.

But he said he doesn’t feel welcome at the Plainfield Cruise Night, held every Tuesday evening throughout the summer, after he was told in the past month that motorcycles aren’t allowed at the cruise night.

“I just don’t understand why Plainfield is so prejudiced against bikers during cruise nights,” said Jadwin, a Plainfield resident.

Jadwin said on a recent cruise night – either July 28 or Aug. 4 – he was parked on a corner of Des Plaines and Lockport streets when a man, presumably the owner of a nearby car, came up to him and said motorcycles aren’t allowed.

After a brief discussion, Jadwin said the man told him, “If you find your bike on the ground, you’ll understand.”

A Plainfield police officer nearby had told Jadwin he was allowed to park his bike just like any car.

“We have as much rights as car guys,” Jadwin said, noting that he also had a 1966 Chevy Impala he used to bring to

cruise nights. “I’m a resident, I pay taxes and I’m told I’m not allowed there.”

Jadwin said several other bikers he has spoken to felt the same way.

After the incident, Jadwin said he spoke with Plainfield Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Tasha Kitson. The chamber hosts and organizes the cruise nights as a way to encourage more foot traffic to downtown Plainfield businesses.

“She told me cruise nights are for cars,” he said, adding that he has brought his motorcycle to the cruise night in previous years. “But it isn’t a car show. It’s a cruise night.

If they can allow cars, trucks and farm tractors, they should allow bikes.”

Kitson said Plainfield’s cruise nights never have been open to motorcycles, even before the chamber took it over two years ago.

“It is a car show,” Kitson said. “We personally just don’t have room for [motorcycles] when we have 350 lots being filled by cars.”

Kitson said after discussions with staff and members of the previous owners of the event, a space has been reserved for bikers at the corner of Illinois and Lockport streets for the past month.

“We definitely don’t want the motorcyclists to feel like they don’t belong there,” Kitson said.

Jadwin said although the chamber is reserving the

space, it’s farther away from foot traffic, which usually stays on Lockport Street.

Police: Man killed dog with shotgun

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – Police say a Wilmington man used a shotgun to kill his dog when the animal allegedly bit him Sunday.

Richard Slayton, 38, was arrested on charges of aggravated animal cruel- Richard ty and reck- Slayton less discharge of a firearm for caging the dog in his living room and firing three rounds into the animal’s head, according to Police Chief Phillip Arnold.

Officers were called at

11:23 p.m. when the shots were reported in the 100 block of McIntyre Street.

“When they arrived they saw Slayton walking out of his house [telling] officers ‘I’m not getting bit in my own house again,’ ” Arnold said.

Slayton admitted he was drinking before he killed the 2-year-old mixed breed named “Rocky,” Arnold said.

An ambulance was called to check a “minor wound” on Slayton’s hand, but he refused medical treatment, according to reports.

Slayton was booked into the Will County Jail. Will County Animal Control will perform rabies testing on the dog’s remains.

Motorcycle rider dies in Frankfort Township crash FRANKFORT TOWNSHIP – A Tinley Park man died early Monday after losing control of his motorcycle in Frankfort Township.

Will County Sheriff’s deputies were called at 1:43 a.m. to the 7600 block of Benton Avenue to find the unresponsive rider lying on the sidewalk, spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer said.

Laurence Mirabella, 47, had been riding a Harley Davidson when he lost control and was thrown to the ground, according to Hoffmeyer. It was unknown if he was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, she said.

Mirabella was taken to St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields with “severe head trauma” and was pronounced dead at 2:12 a.m., Hoffmeyer said.

Troy Township fire damages home Monday TROY TOWNSHIP – A woman was hospitalized for difficulty breathing after a garage fire

caused smoke to fill a Camelot subdivision home Monday morning in Troy Township.

Troy Fire Protection District Chief Andy Doyle said the fire at the 24400 block of Hickory Walk was called in by the woman, who was the only occupant of the home at the time, when she heard the smoke detectors go off.

She exited the house, but was taken by ambulance to Presences Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet for minor issues with the smoke and asthmatic conditions, Doyle said. A neighbor also had called in the fire. Doyle said the fire started in the garage, causing damage to a vehicle. It was confined to the garage, but the rest of the house had smoke damage.

A dog made it out of the home with no reported injuries. Fire crews had the blaze under control by 8:40 a.m., Doyle said. The cause of the fire and extent of damage was under investigation as of noon Monday.

Along with Troy, fire districts from Channahon, Minooka, Rockdale and Plainfield also responded

to the fire.

WILMINGTON – Police officers said they chased a DUI suspect on foot early Saturday in the Wilmington area.

About 2 a.m. a Wilmington officer and a Will County Sheriff’s deputy witnessed a white pickup truck strike a garbage can in the parking lot of McDonald’s, 1055 S. Water St., Po-

lice Chief Phillip Arnold said.

The pickup then crossed Water Street and came to a rest about 75 yards into a bean field, Arnold said.

“When the officers got up to the truck, Mitchell D. Hazelton, 27, appeared to be unconscious behind the wheel,” Arnold said. “As the officers knocked on the windows, the vehicle again began traveling farther into the bean field.”

The foundation operates from a three-story limestone building in Joliet that is lo-

cally designated as a historic structure.

The recreation facility will be built on the site of old Nowell Park pool, which has been closed for years.

The Joliet Historic Preservation Commission has raised some concerns about the demolition of the old pool bath house. It also has questioned whether the building is too big for the park site.

Park officials said they believe there is enough room in the 20-acre park and note the pavilions, baseball field, tennis courts and basketball courts will remain when the building is constructed.

“Where it’s going is currently a parking lot,” park district spokesman Brad Staab said. “We’re not pulling away anything that anyone is using.”

But the plan has proven a bit too large for the site.

“The county engineer notified us that the initial plan we had was impinging on their right-of-way,” park district Interim Executive Director Matt Pehle said.

The county has a 60-foot right-of-way along Mills Road. It’s wider than most right-of-ways, Pehle said. But it’s there for potential road

widening, which may become necessary depending on how much traffic the facility generates.

The park district has some spatial issues to work out.

Pehle said the plan also may require a variance from the city of Joliet because of its proximity to the road. Moving the entire building back farther on Nowell Park property won’t work, he said, because that would push construction into a wetlands area.

The issues will be resolved, he said.

But he said the park district’s hopes to start construction in the fall have now been pushed back to spring. It is expected it will take a year to 18 months to complete construction.

Park officials also are making preparations for a potential change in site plans.

The park board was to vote on bids for demolition of the Nowell Park bath house at its Aug. 24 meeting. Instead, the board rejected all bids in case plans change.

It’s not that the bath house will not be demolished, Pehle said. But the kind of material to be used as fill for the hole in the ground after demolition depends on whether the location is covered with grass, pavement or a building.

She proudly served her country by joining the U.S. Air Force. She married the love of her life, Joseph W. Peart on April 4, 1953. They moved to Plainfield, in 1957 and raised their 6 children. Violet was a Plainfield softball coach, Band Booster, served her community as Plainfield Township Clerk and Collector. She was the first female member of the Plainfield American Legion Post Marne 13.

Violet also managed the Lockport Office for H&R Block and retired from Chicago Bridge & Iron after 19 years of service. She was an avid bowler and reader. She was a member of St. Mary Immaculate Parish since 1957, St. Mary’s Alter and Rosary Society

and long time member of Parents Without Partners.

Manuel G. Vasquez, age 92, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 29, 2015, with his loving family by his side.

Manuel was born on June 26, 1923, in Morris, IL to the late Jose and Felisa (nee Garcia) Vasquez.

Manuel was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who loved woodworking and working with his hands. He was a World War II Veteran and served in General George S. Patton’s Third Army. He loved the Chicago Blackhawks and White Sox and always enjoyed going to the games. He was also very involved at Sacred Heart Parish in Joliet where he was the head usher for 17 years. He will be dearly missed.

growers have seen decent yields across Illinois, but heavy rainfall late in the growing season diminished much of their crop’s value.

This spring, the crop appeared to be in relatively good shape, but severe storms in May and June took a toll on wheat fields. Since then, farmers have faced a bushel of problems, including disease and problems with quality.

University of Illinois crop scientist Emerson Nafziger said the state’s wheat growers have suffered during the past two seasons.

“For the second year in a row, there’s quite a bit of nasty wheat in Illinois,” Nafziger said. “We had lots and lots of wheat this year that could not be sold for its normal intended uses. A lot of elevators asked farmers to send samples first. Some of them, before you opened the bag, said, ‘We’re not going to take that.’ ”

Rauner signs law toughening penalties on drunk drivers

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois will begin putting ignition locking devices on the vehicles of drivers with two or more drunken driving convictions.

The Decatur Herald & Review reported the ignition interlock devices require drivers to blow into them to prove the driver is sober before the vehicle can start.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed the measure into law last week. The new law prohibits chronic violators from operating any vehicle unless the device is installed. But it also eliminates the period of time in which the offender cannot drive.

Secretary of State Jesse White, who has targeted drunken driving during his tenure in office, said he believes the law will make roads safer.

“This legislation will further strengthen our state’s DUI laws, which will make our roads safer and save lives,” he said.

SPRINGFIELD – The skeleton of a massive mastodon, thousands of Native American artifacts and a giant shark could be the next casualties in an increasingly ugly fight over Illinois’ state budget that has dragged on for months with no sign of ending.

The pieces are among millions held by the Illinois State Museum, a favorite stop for school groups and scientists looking to learn the history of a state that, millions of years before it went broke, was literally underwater.

4th Legionnaires’ disease death at veterans’ home

QUINCY – The Illinois Depart-

ment of Public Health is reporting two more deaths from Legionnaires’ disease after an outbreak at a western Illinois veterans’ home.

The new cases increase the number of residents contaminated at the Quincy veterans’ home to 29. An agency spokeswoman confirmed the recent fatalities to The Associated Press on Monday.

Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia, with lung

inflammation usually caused by infection. Most people get it from inhaling the Legionella bacteria, which is not transmitted from person to person.

The outbreak was first reported last week. Tests to determine the source of the outbreak continue.

CHICAGO – A major credit rating agency is warning legislators and Gov. Bruce Rauner to reach a budget agreement by late September because it’s linked to other massive financial problems.

Moody’s Investors Service said Monday the stalemate underscores “weak governance” and is symptomatic of other “severe” challenges like ballooning pension payments, debt costs and dwindling revenues as a 2011 temporary income tax increase rolls back.

Moody’s said Illinois’ projected budget hole is about $5 billion, and addressing it will become harder if lawmakers approach the September end of the fiscal quarter without a budget deal.

The Republican governor and Democratic-controlled Legislature haven’t agreed on a July 1 fiscal year budget. Money still is being spent, including through court orders.

Rating agencies have given Illinois the worst rating of any U.S. state.

WASHINGTON – Experts in government secrecy law see almost no possibility of criminal action against Hillary Clinton or her top aides in connection with now-classified information sent over unsecure email while she was secretary of state, based on the public evidence thus far.

Some Republicans have called Clinton’s actions criminal and compared her situation to that of David Petraeus, the former CIA director who was prosecuted after giving top secret information to his paramour. Others have cited the case of another past CIA chief, John Deutch, who took highly classified material home.

But in both cases, no one disputed the information was highly classified and in many cases top secret. Petraeus pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor; Deutch was pardoned by President Bill Clinton.

By contrast, there is no evidence of emails stored in Hillary Clinton’s private server bearing classified markings. State Department officials said they don’t believe emails she sent or received included material classified at the time. And even if other government officials dispute that assertion, it is extremely difficult to prove anyone knowingly mishandled secrets.

Mourners celebrate life of slain TV cameraman

ROANOKE, Va. – The scene inside a Virginia high school auditorium sounded more like a

celebration of life Monday than a visitation after a death as the family of a cameraman who was slain on live TV greeted more than 1,000 mourners at a hometown reception.

Adam Ward’s father, Charles “Buddy” Ward, exchanged long hugs with just about anyone he came in contact with at the stage, where the slow-moving line passed his son’s open casket.

Pop music softly played on the speakers.

Salem High School opened its doors to the community to honor Ward, an alumnus. The 27-year-old cameraman for Roanoke TV station WDBJ-TV, along with reporter Alison Parker, was gunned down last week by a former co-worker.

BRUSSELS – French and German leaders reminded other European countries Monday of their shared responsibility toward refugees, as one official blamed harsh government policy for the deaths of dozens of migrants crammed into a truck.

An emergency meeting was called for Sept. 14 on the migrant crisis in which more than 300,000 people have crossed the Mediterranean this year – often those fleeing Syria, Eritrea, Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hundreds have drowned in capsized boats, and 71 people were found locked in the back of a truck on the Budapest-Vienna highway.

In Alaska, Obama depicts stark future without climate action

By JOSH LEDERMAN The Associated Press ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Submerged countries, abandoned cities and floods of refugees await the world barring urgent action on climate change, President Barack Obama warned Monday, painting a doomsday scenario as he opened a historic visit to Alaska.

In a bid to further his environmental legacy, Obama brought the power of the presidential pulpit to Anchorage and called on other nations to take swift action as negotiations for a global climate treaty near a close. His speech to an Arctic climate summit set the tone for a three-day tour of Alaska that will put the state’s liquefying glaciers and sinking villages on graphic display.

“On this issue – of all issues – there is such a thing as being too late,” Obama said. “And that moment is almost upon us.”

During his tour of Alaska, Obama planned to hike a glacier, converse with fishermen and tape a reality TV show with survivalist Bear Grylls – all part of a highly orchestrated White House campaign to illustrate how climate change has damaged Alaska’s stunning landscape. The goal at each stop is to create powerful visuals that show real-world effects of climate change and drive home Obama’s message that the crisis already is occurring.

Obama has two audiences in mind as he traverses Alaska this week: Alaskans, who are hungry for more energy development to boost the state’s sagging oil revenues, and the broader public, whose focus Obama hopes to concentrate on the need for drastic action to combat global warming, including a climate treaty he hopes will help solidify his environmental legacy.

Walking a fine line, Obama sought to portray the U.S. as doing its part even as it develops energy resources it will need during the longer-term transition to cleaner, renewable fuels. He ticked through a list of steps he’s taken to cut greenhouse gas emissions and said America is doing its part.

“We’re proving that there doesn’t have to be a conflict between a sound environment and strong economic goals,” he said.

Evoking ominous consequences, Obama said climate change left unchecked would soon trigger global conflict and “condemn our children to a planet beyond their capacity to repair.” In the Arctic, which is warming faster than any other corner of the globe, Obama said melting permafrost and disintegrating sea ice risk floods, fires and unimaginable economic damage.

“It’s already changing the way Alaskans live,” Obama said. He reserved his strongest critique for those who deny humans are contributing to climate change, dismissing them as “increasingly alone, on their own shrinking island.”

Suspect in death of Houston-area deputy had ’12 mental evaluation

By JUAN A. LOZANO The Associated Press HOUSTON – The man accused of shooting and killing a suburban Houston officer has a history of mental illness and once lived in a homeless shelter, authorities said Monday.

Harris County Sheriff’s Deputy Darren Goforth was ambushed and shot 15 times, Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson said in a court hearing for Shannon J. Miles, who is charged with capital murder.

Miles, a 30-year-old Houston resident who said little in court, is being held without bond. His criminal history dates back to 2005 and includes an arrest in Austin in 2012 that led to Miles being sent to a state mental hospital for several months.

Anderson would not comment on a motive, saying investigators still were trying to figure that out. When asked if it might be connected to heightened tensions around the country between law enforcement and civilians, Anderson said, “I have no idea whether it does or not.”

Last weekend, Sheriff Ron Hickman said the attack was “clearly unprovoked,” that authorities believe the 47-year-old deputy was targeted because he was in uniform and there is no evidence Goforth knew Miles.

Anthony Osso, one of Miles’ two court-appointed attorneys, told The Associated Press his client intends to plead not guilty. “He had indicated to the investigating officers that he was not involved in the case,” Osso said in a

telephone interview.

In 2012, the Travis County District Attorney’s Office charged Miles with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after he got into a fight at a homeless shelter over a remote control, prosecutor Joe Frederick said. Miles was found to be mentally incompetent in October 2012, and he was sent to North Texas State Hospital in Vernon, Texas.

“From this case, you could never tell what would happen” in the future, Frederick said, adding prosecutors treated the case as a “very serious offense” and had offered Miles a plea agreement of seven years in prison.

Miles was declared mentally competent in February 2013, but the charge was dropped after the victim could not be located, Frederick said.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS OLATHE, Kan. – The man who admitted killing three people at two suburban Kansas City Jewish sites gave jurors a Nazi salute Monday after they convicted him of murder and other charges for the shootings, which he said would allow him to “die a martyr.”

It took the jury of seven men and five women just over two hours to find Frazier Glenn Miller Jr. guilty of one count of capital murder, three counts of attempted murder and assault and weapons charges.

After the verdict was announced, Miller, 74, of Aurora, Missouri, said: “The fat lady just sang,” and he raised his right arm in the Nazi salute.

As jurors were filing out of the courtroom later, he told them: “You probably won’t sleep tonight.”

The judge reminded Miller that the same jury will decide his sentence. He could get the death penalty. The sentencing proceedings were expected to begin Tuesday.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Trump has valid point – here’s why

To the Editor: Donald Trump speaks the gut feelings of most people because he is not politically correct. He talks of what is wrong but seldom gives the root causes of problems the visibility needed.

He talks about illegal immigration as if a wall is going to stop it. It might reduce the number somewhat but not end it.

The problem is one of numbers. The world’s population is growing (by some estimates) at about 85 million each year. The 7.3 billion now will be more than 9 billion by 2040 and more than 12 billion by the end of the century. Twelve billion is optimistic and heavily dependent on birth control being widely available in Africa, Central American, Near East Asia and the Mideast. This means religious leaders must stop trying to outgrow each other. The world does not have resources to provide for them. The odd point is the more people make, the more resources they use.

If Trump really wants to stop illegal immigration, he needs to push birth control and better, safer conditions in their countries. Look at Europe’s problems with millions flooding into Europe this year. This is a problem now and will be huge in the coming decades. I think it is a cancerous situation for Europe.

Democrats are pro-birth control, and Republicans are against it. Trump, who was a Democrat and is now a Republican, is for it. Even showboats can have a valid point.

Incidentally, the other 16 hopefuls don’t know how to comment on Trump’s “anchor baby” statement. Is it because one of them claims to be an “anchor baby”? Sen. Ted Cruz’s parents supposedly drove across the Canadian border so their son could be a Canadian and an American citizen. Is his pedigree questionable? That’s a birth certificate Trump should question.

Illinois’ budget crisis worsening, with no end in sight The state fiscal crisis is only going to get worse, and the solution is becoming more difficult by the day.

As you probably know, the General Assembly and the governor have not yet agreed on a full state budget.

But because of various federal judicial orders, a signed education funding bill and several ongoing statutory “continuing appropriations” (debt service, pension payments, legislative salaries, etc.), the government is on pace to spend billions of dollars more than it will bring in this fiscal year.

Guesstimates have been tossed around by various folks that the state could run out of money by March or maybe April if no formal budget agreement is reached. That’s because all the judicial orders, etc. are based on last fiscal year’s budget, but last year’s budget was based on revenue from a 5 percent income tax that automatically fell to 3.75 percent in January.

The long term is grim, but so is the short term.

THE FIRST

AMENDMENT

On Aug. 18, Federal District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman gave the state three days to make July’s $120 million payment for services to developmentally disabled people.

But state Comptroller Leslie Munger claimed there wasn’t enough money in the state’s “checking account” to meet state payroll, make required bond, pension and school payments, fund other federal consent decrees and comply with Coleman’s order.

A partial payment of $70 million was made earlier last week, and the rest was paid a few days later after Coleman threatened the state with a contempt of court citation.

And things are only going to get worse. The comptroller’s people said their office sets aside about $540 million a month for state pension payments. The comptroller’s office estimates that by November or December, the state will not have enough money in the bank to make its monthly pension payments.

But they even can’t start

And the problem with agreeing to any of Rauner’s ideas is everybody figures he will attempt to hold up next year’s budget for even more anti-labor stuff.

One theory (on both sides) long has been this thing has to play itself all the way out so we don’t ever have to go through it ever again. So the Democrats may wait to see what Rauner does when the state’s prisons run out of food, or the government runs out of money. Rauner may wait to see what the Dems do when private human service providers fold en masse.

So they likely will keep circling each other, throwing jabs and issuing taunts. They’re

basically just attempting to run out the clock on each other, creating diversions until “doomsday” finally is reached.

But every day they wait will make it that much tougher to craft a final budget deal because basic math is not on their side.

Rauner essentially agreed in private months ago to a one percentage point income tax hike – from the current personal rate of 3.75 percent up to 4.75 percent – if, that is, they first can reach a deal on his Turnaround Agenda.

Let’s say a miracle happens and they come to terms by the first week of September.

To bring in the same amount of revenue as a full-year one percentage point hike, the effective tax rate over the fiscal year’s remaining 10 months would have to be significantly higher than 4.75 percent.

And now factor in candidate petition filing, which begins Sept. 1 and runs through Nov. 30. How do you convince Republicans and Democrats to vote for a tax hike while

petitions are in the streets?

That’s why Senate GOP Leader Christine Radogno said recently she didn’t see a resolution until December. But if they wait until December, when a three-fifths majority still would be required to pass a new budget, why not wait until January, when only a simple majority would be needed?

If that happens, then the income tax rate Jan. 1 – halfway through the fiscal year – would have to be 5.75 percent to produce the same revenues as a 4.75 percent rate back on July 1.

And what if they wait until the state runs out of money, sometime after the party primaries end? Trust me, you don’t even want to know what the tax rate would have to be.

The other option is to not raise taxes that high and just postpone billions of dollars in state bill payments. I’m not sure which is worse.

Things that happened in the high school football season openers involving area schools may or may not be indicative of what is to come.

Recall what the late Gordie Gillespie always said: A good team makes its biggest improvement from Week 1 to Week 2. So, it could be that our assessments will begin anew a week from now. However, armed with one week

of results, let’s take a look around: • We’re all pulling for Joliet Central to put an end to its losing streak, which has reached 46 games. This week it just may happen.

The Steelmen were tied with Thornridge, 6-6, in the fourth quarter Friday but lost on an interception that was returned for a touchdown.

This week, they face a Rich South team that lost to Tinley Park, 49-8, and in 2014 slipped

This will be the Steelmen’s home opener, and it is scheduled Friday night. The atmosphere should be electric.

There are definite signs this could be the one.

• Speaking of ending a skid, there’s no reason Plainfield

Central can’t travel to Rich Central on Friday and secure its first victory since late in the 2012 season, even though the Olympians did beat Plainfield East, 24-23, last week.

The Wildcats hung tough against Marmion before dropping a 24-14 decision.

• Providence lost its opener to Joliet Catholic, 35-13. The Celtics face what almost has become a must-win Friday at Oswego, which lost its opener, 35-29, to Batavia. Defending

Getting the football complex ready at Dzuris took some extra work because of the storm, Hutchings said, but not as much as at some of the school’s other athletic facilities.

The field itself, he said, remained in great shape, which he credited to the work of former athletic director John Cullick. The scoreboard, a

last-minute replacement for a new scoreboard destroyed by the tornado, operated without a hitch.

To Hutchings, the almost-normal atmosphere was a testament to the collaborative attitude and effort that have been commonplace.

“From the day after the tornado, it was friends helping friends, neighbors helping neighbors. I’m a very proud Coal City resident,” Hutch-

ings said. “We have all these surrounding communities that came in and helped out.

“The Morris football team was helping – they were in my father-in-law’s backyard, doing some work. You saw the Braidwood team come over, the Wilmington team come over, and then we had Sandwich, Seneca – almost every opponent had people helping here at some point in time.”

The performance of the football team itself was not adversely affected by the storm and its aftermath. The Coalers claimed a 47-0 victory over Reed-Custer. Micetich said while the tornado was something nobody wanted, the healing process helped produce a close-knit team.

“I think it’s brought us closer as a team, for sure,” Micetich said.

Southwest Prairie may not supply many playoff points • GOSS

Other Southwest Prairie teams were only 2-5 in Week 1. Unless there is a turnaround this week, the conference may not supply sufficient playoff points (opponent victories) to make a 5-4 record a shoo-in for the postseason.

Minooka may need to be 6-3.

• Lincoln-Way Central is a playoff hopeful that does not want to start 0-2.

The Knights fell, 28-12, at Huntley, which was a difficult assignment for coach Jeremy Cordell’s debut, but they can even the score with a win in the home opener Friday against Kaneland.

• Just wondering how involved Joliet West will be in the SouthWest Suburban Blue title chase. My

feeling is the Tigers are good enough to be a solid contender to at least finish in the first division in the league.

West’s 30-15 win at Moline last week was a positive, although Moline is not expected to be a world beater. On the other hand, if the Tigers can win Friday at Plainfield South in the Cougars’ home opener, they will hit the conference schedule with momentum in their corner.

• Plainfield South dropped a 21-6 defensive struggle to Lemont, the runner-up in Class 6A last season. The Cougars finished with one first down total in their last 13 possessions. They are another team that would hate to be 0-2 and perhaps have to win six games to reach the playoffs.

• Saint Xavier coach Mike Feminis was on the sidelines for the JCA-Providence game. He was very impressed with the Hilltoppers’ line play.

“On both sides of the ball, their line was like

watching a I-AA college team,” Feminis said.

JCA has its home opener Friday against Wheaton North, which lost, 10-7, to Wheaton Warrenville South in two overtimes.

If the Hilltoppers get the job done along the line of scrimmage the way they did against Providence, they will be tough for Wheaton North or anyone else to beat.

• The renewal of the Coal City-Wilmington rivalry is scheduled Friday in Wilmington. The Wildcats are the defending Class 3A state champions, and the Coalers would like nothing better than to knock them off. As usual, this one, with all that atmosphere, will be “small-town football” at its best.

• Based on one week, candidates to be even better than we may have anticipated include Lincoln-Way West, Plainfield North and Morris.

COAL CITY – An opening-night Coal City win in a rivalry game against ReedCuster at a packed Dzuris Athletic Complex football field made Dan Hutchings smile.

The Coalers’ athletic director admitted the game Friday night against Reed-Custer carried symbolic significance to himself and others in the community because it was 67 days since an EF3 tornado ravaged Coal City.

“It’s just normalcy. Getting back to normalcy,” Hutchings said. “It’s just nice for our kids to get back in a routine, coaches get back in a routine.

We had a community come out here and support ’em. We had a great crowd.”

Senior quarterback Nick Micetich said the team was excited for Friday, but not any more than it would be for another season opener. The pregame festivities, the buzz and the game itself, Micetich said, all had a feel typical of a season opener – which was welcome in a community where so little was normal the past several weeks.

For some Coaler players and fans, however, what happened after the game – and what happens after practice each day – remains atypical.

“You always say, ‘Let’s get back to normalcy,’ ” longtime coach Lenny Onsen said.

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – It came as no surprise Friday night that Saint Xavier football coach Mike Feminis and St. Francis coach Joe Curry were on the sidelines as Joliet Catholic visited Providence at New Lenox.

Both coaches know the gold mines the two local programs are. Both have players from those schools, and from numerous other area schools, on their rosters.

In fact, a review of the rosters shows Saint Xavier with 15 area products and USF with 18. Many will be playing prominent roles at 4 p.m. Saturday when the Cougars visit the Saints in a Mid-States Football Association Midwest League game at Memorial Stadium.

Saint Xavier hosted Marian (Indiana), the No. 1-ranked NAIA team in the country, last week and lost, 45-13. The Cougars entered with a No. 4 ranking. But, as Feminis – a former All-American linebacker at St. Francis – said, “Marian is awfully good. We needed to play a near-perfect game, and we didn’t.”

USF, on the other hand, will play its opener Saturday.

The Cougars have the Marian game under their belts, although Curry and his staff were able to scout them.

“There are advantages and disadvantages either way,” Feminis said. “It’s an advantage to have played a game, but there are no guarantees we will make the big improvement like Gordie (Gillespie) used to talk about.

St. Francis hasn’t played, but Joe (Curry) and his whole staff got to live-scout us. I was teasing Joe that he might as well just come down to the sideline and help us call plays.”

Ivlow enjoyed a huge season on the Memorial Stadium turf as a JCA senior in 2013. He rushed for 62 yards in eight carries last week against Marian.

“Mike dinged his shoulder, but he will play Saturday,” Feminis said. “I expect him to play really, really well. And as good a player as he is, he is even a better kid. He’s a joy to coach. We’re fortunate to have him. He has done a great job so far. He led us in yards and touchdowns last year.”

Ivlow takes his handoffs from junior quarterback John Rohde, whom JCA fans will remember as one of those good Montini quarterbacks.

Ivlow is an example why Feminis says, “It would be stupid for me not to continue

to recruit the Joliet area. It’s great football there. If Mike (Ivlow) were bigger, he’d be playing on a higher level, but he is one heck of a running back just the same. “(Sophomore) Justin Hunter at right tackle has been a godsend, too. If he were maybe an inch taller, he could be playing anywhere in America. He is the first lineman I have had who was firstteam all-conference as a true freshman.

“Nick Cemeno is another good one. He is a four-year starter in our defensive line.”

Of note on the USF side, there are running back John Magee (Plainfield South), wide receiver Sheldon Magee (Plainfield South), wide receiver Dantrell Wright (Plainfield South), linebacker Mike Passo (JCA), linebacker Brett Ditchman (Lincoln-Way Central) and cornerback Breion Tucker (JCA).

“Our kids get up for this game,” Curry said. “It’s

somewhat of a rivalry, but I don’t consider it that because we’ve only beaten them once.

We have to win more than that. It’s a lot more fun when you can talk about beating them afterward.

“But more than anything this week, we can’t get caught up in other things. We do that, and we should be OK. The things that killed us in the past against Saint X were inconsistency and turning the ball over.”

Freshman Don Butkus will open at quarterback for the Saints, who Curry noted had a productive scrimmage last week against Carthage.

“Donny brings leadership and a level of consistency,” Curry said. “He has the ability to make plays. If he plays within himself, that will give our offense a great chance to be highly successful.”

Trace Wanless, last year’s regular quarterback, will move among various receiver spots, perhaps some running back, and still could see time at quarterback. “We’ll utilize his talent best that way,” Curry said.

USF will be without quarterback Mitch Brozovich (Minooka) and defensive lineman Joe Lyman (Lincoln-Way Central) for the season because of injury.

MORRIS – Fast qualifier Scott Tomasik visited Victory Lane on Friday night as he won the 30-lap late-model feature at Grundy County Speedway.

Tomasik was followed across the finish line by Larry Schuler, John Nutley, Billy Knippenberg, James Gregait and Nathan Kelly.

Knippenberg won the first heat, with Brian Tomasi second and Jim Weber third. Schuler prevailed in the second heat ahead of Brandon Clubb and Eddie Hoffman.

Tom Knippenberg won the 25-lap Mid-American feature and was the fast qualifier. Josh Nelms was second, followed by Luke Baldwin, John Ventrello, Matt Clemens and Chuck Yuris.

Jim Kachel, Baldwin and Aaron Shelton finished 1-2-3 in the first heat. Ventrello claimed the second heat, with Yuris second and Knippenberg third.

Zach Sontag was victorious in the 25-lap street stock feature. Rounding out the top six were Christy Penrod, fast qualifier Seth Blommaert, Cheryl Hryn, Tim Stewart and Rita Fields.

Craig Matteson won the first heat. Spencer Leake was second and Darrell Gay third. Hryn took the second heat ahead of Fields and Bill Serviss.

In the 150-lap 4-cylinder feature, Byrce Leake claimed the victory ahead of fast qualifier Cirk Lindemuth, Will Shepherd, Chris Mihalski, Dan Schmeissing and Alex Gay. Leake, Ricky Wilson and Jim Gross finished 1-2-3 in the first heat.

Dylan Marshall won the second heat, with Gay second and Schmeissing third.

“I’m happy with the way we have started the season,” Theiss said.

“With four seniors anchoring our back line – Zak Pavlovich, Jake Galounis, Tim Cucci and Johnny Farrell – we’ve witnessed their experience and leadership filtering throughout the rest of the group.

“After falling behind against Lemont early in the second half, Justin Yaeger and Zak Pavlovich quickly demonstrated their composure and ability to respond by connecting on three goals in a 20-minute span. Kyle Seymour tallied his fourth goal late in the match, and Gus Petrungaro made a couple key saves throughout the game to secure the win.”

Lockport graduated 10 seniors from a sectional finalist that had 17 wins and won conference. Coach Chris Beal’s team rallied for a 2-1 win over Minooka in its opener before playing to a scoreless draw with Plainfield East. The Porters are paced by seniors Jakub Krawczyk, Jack Dilger, Zach Stojak, Brian Moore, David Villa and Jose Magallanes.

Plainfield Central is 2-0-1 in nonconference play. Coach Kevin Fitzgerald’s Wildcats beat Yorkville, 4-1, and Wheaton Warrenville South, 3-2, before settling for a 2-2 draw with Waubonsie Valley.

“Max Woodward, Joel Sanchez and Edgar Cardenas have all played well,” Fitzgerald said. “The whole group has risen to the challenge, so we hope it’s prepared us for conference.”

Opening week obviously is just a small part of a season, but area soccer coaches would prefer having a good start to the alternative.

And that’s what several boys squads did this past week. Three teams posted 3-0 marks, two others had at least one victory and no losses, and another won its first two matches before being edged in a tournament quarterfinal.

Joliet Central and Bolingbrook both kicked off play in Reavis’ Windy City Classic by winning their first three matches to advance today’s semifinals in Burbank.

The Steelmen play Cristo Rey, and the Raiders meet Bremen. Winners of those contests advance to Monday’s noon championship at Toyota Park.

Coach Eduardo Contreras’ Steelmen defeated Eisenhower, 4-2; St. Rita, 2-0; and Reavis, 1-0, to earn their spot in the semifinals.

“We have been playing well for starting seven juniors,” Contreras said. “We knew coming into the season that we would be young, but our juniors are very talented.

“We still are making mistakes, but our two center backs – juniors Brian Castillo and Misael Martinez – have been playing well. Nayib Martinez, a senior midfielder, also has helped solidify the midfield after taking a year off from playing high school soccer.

Our whole team is hungry and just enjoys playing soccer with each other.”

Meanwhile, coach Jamie Clemmons’ Raiders, who are the defending champions in the event, beat Little Village, 2-0; Romeoville, 2-1; and Kennedy, 1-0, to earn their semifinal berth.

“We are having a very good start,” Clemmons said. “Our All-State forward, Luis Flores, returned with three goals and one assist in the first three games. We are 3-0 and have only given up one goal, and it was a PK. We want to continue to improve every game and be firing on all cylinders when conference starts in a few weeks.

“We have a completely new defense, with two players moving from midfield to center back. Tyler Elmore and Jacob Perakis are both state track kids as well as best friends, so it helps with chemistry defensively. Our goalie, Brandon Murillo, has played outstanding and has saved three penalty kicks in shootouts to help us advance in the Windy City Classic.”

Still big question mark at right tackle for Bears BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush There really were no surprises in the Bears’ first round of roster cuts this past weekend.

I don’t know that it was wise to cut Tim Jennings – only time will tell. I know I wouldn’t have cut him based on the cornerbacks left behind, but that doesn’t make it wrong or surprising that the Bears did.

If you’ve been paying attention, the Bears seemingly have been planning to cut Jennings since early on in the free agency process in March.

The additions of Alan Ball – and the money he was guaranteed – and Tracy Porter, both slightly less talented but significantly bigger than Jennings, made it clear the Bears’ two-time Pro Bowler was in jeopardy.

In his first meeting with the media Monday since the cuts were announced, coach John Fox said it really was just a matter of taste when it came to Jennings.

“We liked guys better.

What we do is evaluate – and we evaluate every practice – and, unfortunately for him, he was recovering from an offseason surgery.

“And then, really, like anything, it’s not personal, it’s not that you don’t like guys, it’s that you like other people better.”

Jennings was the Bears’ best cover corner in the two practices against the Colts last week, but he did work his way back slowly from an offseason knee issue and missed some camp time early when he had to return to Georgia to deal with an off-the-field issue.

I absolutely believe Fox when he said there’s nothing personal involved, but I also believe he wanted more size at the position from the jump, and that’s why Jennings is gone.

Daniel Thomas is a player I actually liked more than any Bears backup running back, other than Jeremy Langford, heading into training camp. But it looks as if Langford is well ahead of where anyone expected him

to be, Jacquizz Rodgers has had a strong summer, and Thomas never could get over his balky knee.

The only other casualty I thought would at least survive until the final cut was Al Louis-Jean.

Louis-Jean has the kind of size Jennings lacked on the corner and was getting a lot

of first-team special teams reps early in camp But with almost no reps at cornerback in recent weeks, Louis-Jean’s star clearly had fallen.

Far more interesting will be the next round – the Bears’ final cuts that will come this weekend.

What Fox and Ryan Pace plan to do on the offensive line is anybody’s guess.

Fox acknowledged Monday that right tackle is unsettled at best. “We’ve got guys we’re looking at. To say it’s perfectly settled at this point – probably not the case, but I think that’s the case at a lot of positions.”

When I asked him if Jermon Bushrod was 100 percent healthy and if he was satisfied with what he’s seen at left tackle, Fox stopped well short of a ringing endorsement.

“I don’t know that anybody out there is 100 percent by the nature of what they do. But I think he’s a done

a decent job, and we’ll see where that goes moving forward.”

There is no question Bushrod, Matt Slauson, Will Montgomery, Kyle Long and Hroniss Grasu will claim five of eight likely O-line spots; and as one of the “new guys” and the third guard, Vladimir Ducasse seems safe to.

But if we learned anything Saturday night in Cincinnati, it’s the Bears’ starting right tackle probably isn’t on the roster right now unless it’s Kyle Long, and it’s very unlikely both Jordan Mills and Charles Leno will make the team.

If you’re looking for surprises, I wouldn’t be shocked if both get cut as the Bears look to bring in help from among other teams’ cuts.

New Illini coach Cubit hoping to project new professionalism

By DAVID MERCER The Associated Press CHAMPAIGN – Bill Cubit joked that he thought the blazer he wore to the podium Monday to speak to reporters made him look good.

There actually was a reason a guy usually seen in coaching gear wore the blue coat on a 90-degree day.

“I’ve always done it at every place I’ve been. You go out there in a professional manner,” the 61-year-old Cubit said.

Cubit took over Friday as interim coach after athletic director Mike Thomas decided his predecessor, Tim Beckman, no longer should be the face of the football program.

The firing came after an investigation into claims Beckman had pressured players to play hurt and interfered with medical decision-making.

Beckman has denied he did anything wrong, and hinted that he’ll sue after the university declined to pay him the $3.1 million left on his contract or his buyout.

Cubit takes over with the season-opener against Kent State coming up Friday, knowing he’d like to win the job on a permanent basis but having no idea if that might happen.

But he said Monday he felt no special pressure.

“I’m going to enjoy every minute of it,” Cubit said

Players said they are ready to play for Cubit.

“It’s a little crazy, but it is what it is, and we’ve got a good leader up there,” offensive lineman Teddy Karras said.

Cubit has coached at Florida and Missouri and Stanford. But he also made stops at tiny Widener in Pennsylvania and at Martin County High School in Florida.

His eight-year run as head coach at Western Michigan ended with a four-win season that got him fired, and then he landed at Illinois.

Cubit is comfortable with his players – one of them,

quarterback Wes Lunt, was at ease enough Monday to kid him about the blue blazer – and with reporters and others.

The only moment Cubit appeared uncomfortable was when he was asked if he feared other members of the staff might be implicated in the investigation that led to Beckman’s firing.

“I don’t know,” he said, his face suddenly serious.

Cubit said he already has talked to his staff about injuries and other aspects of how they treat players.

“I let them know why we’re here, and understand you have a responsibility to go out there and do the best you can for the student athletes, and that’s in all phases,” Cubit said. “Yeah, we went over that a little.”

But other than some minor changes in the drills they run, not much else has changed, Cubit said. Given that Beckman was fired a week before the opener, there’s no time. He quipped he hasn’t time to even eat a meal.

Cubit said he hopes people will rally around the football program on a campus where former athletes in two other sports, women’s basketball and soccer, have alleged they were either mistreated and had injuries mishandled, and where the top two administrators have resigned under pressure in recent weeks.

Cubs get OF Jackson amid playoff hopes The ASSOCIATED PRESS HOUSTON – The Cubs acquired outfielder Austin Jackson from the Seattle Mariners on Monday, boosting their depth for their run at a possible playoff spot.

The Cubs sent a player to be named and an international draft slot to the Mariners. The Cubs, who also got cash back in the deal, then designated infielder Mike Olt for assignment to make room on the roster.

Because the deal was made before Sept. 1, Jackson will be eligible for the postseason if the Cubs get that far. The Cubs began the day with a 5½-game lead over San Francisco for the second NL wild card.

“Austin Jackson – I’ve seen him for a long time in the American League. He’s a really good player,” said manager Joe Maddon, who is in his first year with the Cubs after a long run with Tampa Bay. “When he starts swinging the bat well, he’s very productive, fine outfielder, good base runner, stolen bases. (He’s) kind of a complete player so to be able to pick him up right now – we’re very fortunate.”

Jackson had been set to lead off and play center field Monday night at Houston. He was scratched more than hour before gametime.

The 28-year-old Jackson was traded from Detroit to the Mariners in July 2014. He was hitting .272 with eight homers and 38 RBIs in 107 games this season.

The Cubs placed right fielder Jorge Soler on the disabled list on Aug. 24 with a strained left oblique, and center fielder Dexter Fowler has been banged up. Jackson also could help improve the Cubs’ defense, maybe as a late-inning replacement in left for Kyle Schwarber.

“Just with the depth component, you never know what’s going to happen during the course of the next month,” Maddon said.

A new approach to wound healing Minooka resident doing well after allograft procedure

Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Minooka resident Jim Prosise recently received an allograft – a skin patch from a donor. The patch saved his foot.

In April, Prosise was working outside. When he picked up a railroad tie to move a few feet, a splinter lodged in his finger, and Prosise instinctively dropped the tie, which fell directly on his foot.

The deep bruise escalated into a nasty wound that grew in size and depth, eventually turning into months of pain and immobility.

Challenges – and a solution

Rezin Orthopedics and Sports Medicine foot and ankle surgeon Dr. Kyle Pearson said when he saw Prosise, the wound was about a half-dollar in size and progressing in severity because of Prosise’s Type 2 diabetes, diagnosed the year before at age 66.

Diabetes can damage blood vessels, reducing blood flow that is critical for healing, Pearson said. With such wounds, Pearson said he checks for proper blood, treats infection and ensures the injured area is not rubbing or pressing on a shoe.

“Usually at four weeks, the wound should be about 50 percent in size from what it was at its worst,” Pearson said. “At the four-week mark, if what we’re doing isn’t working well, a skin allograft becomes a viable option.”

Pearson recommended Prosise get an allograft after his response to treatment had plateaued. Prosise never had heard of the procedure.

“When he told me about the graft, I thought it would be skin from another part of my body,” Prosise said.

About allografts

An allograft is a piece of skin from a donor, but it

doesn’t have to match in tissue type, as a donated kidney or liver does.

“You don’t have to do antigen tests,” Pearson said, “or blood-type crosses.”

In fact, according to Pearson, it’s expected that the body rejects the graft – but that’s good. In fact, the rejection of the upper layer of skin is part of the process.

“It [the body] grabs all the important nutrients it needs, such as proteins and growth factors and collagen,” Pearson said. “The rest is sloughed off without causing an autoimmune response in a negative way.”

The use of allografts has increased over the past couple decades, Pearson said, because of better research and a greater need.

“It’s another tool to assist with healing wounds in a timely manner,” Pearson said, “before infection sets in, which can lead to amputation and morbidity and mortality.”

Pearson worked with

several different types of allografts during his residency and found the best success with the one he currently uses. Other allografts include those made on a mesh from tissue cultures and others made with placenta stem cells.

Pearson said an autograft, where skin is taken from a patient’s own body, is a procedure used on other skin conditions, but not with patients who have diabetes or who are immunocompromised.

“When you use an autograft on a diabetic patient,” Pearson said, “there is the fear of creating another wound to treat the first wound. Using an allograft from a donor gets away from that.”

Pearson receives the allograft on dry ice immediately before its placement. He first cleans out his patient’s wound, removing any dead tissue in a procedure called debriding that prepares the wound bed to healthy tissue that will accept the graft.

The allograft is cut to the exact dimensions of the wound, then placed on top of the wound and secured with sutures or Steri-Strips. A special dressing is placed on top to keep the tissue moist and protected.

“The cells in the graft remain living for up to two weeks,” Pearson said.

Pearson gave Prosise three allografts, one after the other, and his wound finally began healing.

“He seemed pleased between grafts,” Prosise said of Pearson, “and he said things were progressing well. I could see that the wound was closing up.”

Prosise said he has some residual swelling when he is on his feet too much. He’s looking forward to walking around his neighborhood again with his wife, spending more active time with his grandchildren and doing more volunteer work with his church.

ark also was healed with allografts. The damage to her foot, however, was much more severe than Prosise’s.

Greenwall, who also has diabetes, said she had developed cellulitis in her leg that had gone to her foot and caused a large sore.

She sought medical care, but the wound grew, and she ended up in the emergency room.

“Two doctors wanted to cut my leg off halfway up to my knee,” Greenwall said. “Dr. Pearson thankfully came in and said he thought he could save my foot.”

After several months of surgery, treatment and allografts, Greenwall’s foot was saved.

Today, she is recovering from additional bone surgery on her foot, a byproduct of the infection, with another surgery on schedule, but the allografts did what they were intended to do, and Pearson is optimistic about the eventual outcome.

the calmest. On a ship, request a lower-level cabin toward the middle of the vessel to minimize motion.

• Avoid odors such as perfume, smoke or cooking smells. Open a window for fresh air if possible. Turn on the air vent if you’re on an airplane.

• If you are very prone to motion sickness, don’t read or watch videos while traveling.

• During a bumpy car or boat ride, try keeping your gaze fixed on something stationary, like the horizon.

• Avoid alcohol when traveling.

If these tips don’t help, consider motion sickness medications.

Over-the-counter drugs include dimenhydrinate (Dramamine) and meclizine (Bonine).

Prescription medications include promethazine (Phenergan) and scopolamine (Transderm Scop), a patch worn behind the ear. Adding caffeine to these medicines (particularly promethazine) may provide additional relief. A word of caution: In some people, adding caffeine after noontime can lead to poor quality sleep that night.

And sleep deprivation may make people more vulnerable to motion sickness.

A final word of caution: Most motion sickness medications tend to make people drowsy.

So be careful about using them if you are the driver, captain or pilot of that car, boat or plane that may cause your motion sickness.

Dear Dr. K: I have a lot of travel coming up for work. The problem is that I get motion sickness in cars, trains, planes • basically everything that moves. I’d love some practical tips for relief.

Dear Reader: Motion sickness often conjures images of ships tossed on stormy seas. In reality, motion sickness can be brought on by traveling in a car or bus, flying in an airplane, or even something as simple as watching a movie with jerky camera shots. The most common symptoms are dizziness and nausea, sometimes with vomiting. You can also experience cold sweats, drowsiness and headaches.

Motion sickness is caused by what’s known as a “neural mismatch.”

It’s also called sensory conflict. Normally your eyes, muscles, joints and the balance mechanism in your inner ear send messages to your brain about your body’s movement in space.

The neural mismatch that causes motion sickness usually follows one of two patterns. The first is when your body experiences motion that your eyes can’t see. One example of this is being below deck on a rocking boat or ship. Everything in the room looks stationary to your eye. But your body can feel the motion of the boat.

The other type of neural mismatch occurs when your body is not actually moving, but your eyes tell it that it is. This can happen when you are watching a movie in a widescreen theater.

Whatever the reason, motion sickness is no fun. Here are some tips to help prevent it.

• Travel on an empty stomach.

• On an airplane, try to get an aisle seat toward the center of the cabin, where motion is

Dear Abby : I was best friends with “Joanne” after we met in middle school. She comes from a conservative Christian family and has three successful siblings. This has made her quirky, media-driven pursuits and city life a disappointment to her family. When we were teens and she learned that I was a straight ally for gay rights, she came out to me as a lesbian, but for years only I and a few close friends knew.

Once she was an adult and her family found out, they practically disowned her and made their disapproval and “shame” very clear. Unfortunately, due to some family problems of my own, I moved away, and we communicated only periodically for the last couple of years until recently. I was shocked when she informed me that she is going to become a nun.

Abby, I have no problem with her faith (I attend an LGBT-friendly church), but I’m afraid Joanne is doing it for all the wrong reasons. For the 15 years I have known her, she has been an open-minded, culture-loving social butterfly, and she doesn’t seem to have changed much personality-wise. Naturally, her family is thrilled with her decision because it means she will never date another woman or be a part of “that lifestyle.”

I know Joanne is an adult and these choices are hers to make, but I’m afraid she is being guilted into a life she will ultimately regret. How do I express my concerns to her without being offensive?
