CHANNAHON – Fifteen years after 17-year-old Nicole L. Bowers was last seen at her Morris home, Channahon investigators recently had some DNA evidence tested in her murder case.

“Science changes in 15 years,” Deputy Police Chief Adam Bogart said Monday at a news conference. “Relationships change, too. Someone who may have felt they couldn’t come forward [then] could [contact police] now.”

On the night of Aug. 2, 2000, Bowers was watching TV when her mother went to bed, but wasn’t home when she woke up the next morning at their apartment in the 1200 block of Alicia Drive, Morris.

Police said at the time the teen was a “habitual runaway” who regularly spent the night at a boyfriend’s house. Investigators became suspicious after several days passed and Bowers, who had not taken any personal items, did not contact relatives.

“I remember as a patrolman, for several years her picture was at our station as a missing runaway,” Police Chief Jeff Wold said.

On May 9, 2003, a surveyor found part of Bowers’ skull in a field near Bungalow and Gun Club roads in Channahon while the Utility Concrete facility was being constructed. The site is about two miles from where Bowers lived, Wold said.

“We found some bones on the surface and ended up searching an area about 50 yards long by 75 yards wide where we brushed down inches below the surface and sifted,” Wold said.

Bowers’ identity was confirmed through dental records, and forensics indicated her bones had been intentionally broken and scattered across the wide area. She died as a

result of blunt force trauma to her head.

While attending a homicide conference in February, Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland was inspired to review the cold case and has been meeting every other week with Channahon detectives.

“Evidence collected at the scene [was] recently sent to the crime lab and DNA returned,” Helland said.

Bogart said further analysis is needed to check if the DNA can be matched to anyone in the law enforcement database network.

“Upon review of this particular case, [investigators] pulled out several leads that weren’t followed up on at the time,” Helland said. “We feel someone in the public has relevant information and relationships have changed among those individuals.”

As Hispanic population grows, courts hope for increase in interpreters

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County Judge Daniel Kennedy asked the man standing before him Monday in court if he understood the plea agreement he’d signed and if he had signed it on his own free will.

Immediately Carla Coloma, one of three full-time courthouse interpreters on staff, began interpreting in rapid-fire Spanish every word Kennedy said, creating a steady flow of hushed conversation.

After each question, Coloma responded “Yes, judge,” for the Spanish-speaking defendant, alternating between languages as the judge told the defendant he was waiving his rights for trial by pleading guilty.

Within a matter of minutes, Coloma interpreted for at least five other cases before one of the attorneys in the courtroom asked her if she’d be available to interpret during a bench trial scheduled for later in the day.

She wasn’t sure, she said, but would do her best to make it. If she couldn’t, it’s possible another interpreter – she’s one of three on staff – would be available.

“It’s hard to handle all the court calls. If someone isn’t available, they have to reschedule. I’m constantly running to different courtrooms,” Coloma said, a pager in hand. “We go where we are paged.”

Her job duties go beyond interpreting in the courtroom, she said. A small line of defendants had formed in her general vicinity outside Kennedy’s courtroom and she interpreted for attorneys conversing with Spanish-speaking clients.

and defendants’ names, and realized she needed to get to another courtroom where she was paged earlier in the day.

She headed toward the elevators.

It’s an average hectic Monday for Coloma and the other Will County Courthouse staff interpreters as they juggle traffic, domestic battery, misdemeanors, small claims and other cases. A fourth interpreter is typically assigned to the fourth floor to handle felonies.

Associate Judge Jessica Colon-Sayre, the first female Latina judge in Will County, was appointed earlier this year. She said the understaffing of interpreters is a longstanding issue, and one that’s exacerbated by a growing Hispanic population in Joliet.

A 2010 U.S. Census Bureau estimate put the population at about 16 percent.

Colon-Sayre is assigned to traffic court, where a Spanish-speaking interpreter is needed for some of the 300 cases she sees daily, she said.

Coloma assisted her earlier that day.

“From petty [offenses] all the way to [felony], it’s important that we admonish [their rights] correctly,” she said. “You’re talking about people who don’t understand English ... and who are often confused and don’t understand the rules [of the] court system.”

Will County Court Administrator Kurt Sangmeister said the courthouse is requesting additional funding for another full-time interpreter in next year’s budget, but it’s unclear whether that request will be approved.

The three current interpreters’ salaries total just under $97,000.

Staff interpreters speak only Spanish and English, he said, so the county contracts with outside firms in instances when an interpreter for

other languages, such as sign language, is required. The courthouse also has requested an increase in funding from $46,000 to $70,000 next year for those expenses.

Neighbors at odds over Joliet liquor license

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Neighbors and a neighborhood association are at odds over whether a liquor license should be issued to a restaurant on Hickory Street.

The Joliet City Council is scheduled to vote Tuesday night on a liquor license for the El Primo Mexican Restaurant, 751 N. Hickory St. “We are against any more liquor licenses going into that area,” Richard Serdar, who lives on Hickory Street, told the council at its Monday workshop meeting.

Serdar said there are 18

businesses selling liquor in an area that runs roughly between Broadway Street and Raynor Avenue and between Ruby and Theodore streets.

One of those businesses, the Blue Bridge Legacy restaurant, was approved for a liquor license at the last council meeting.

Hickory Street in particular is an issue, Serdar said.

“In two blocks there are five places that sell liquor,” he told the council. “Now we want another one? You have to live in that area to see what’s going on.”

Serdar presented a petition with 16 signatures opposing the liquor license.

But John Sheridan, a facilitator for the Cunningham Neighborhood Council, said the council took a vote at a meeting and backed the liquor license.

“They [El Primo owners] simply want a restaurant,” Sheridan told the council.

“Cunningham Neighborhood Council voted as a group, and we support the decision that’s being recommended tonight.”

The Liquor Commission headed by Mayor Bob O’Dekirk recommended approval of the license.

Sheridan said the restaurant owners are willing to cooperate with neighbors on

hours of operation and street parking.

El Primo would get a Class E license, which is standard for restaurants, if approved.

The Liquor Commission report on the license application notes that 46 of the city’s 190 liquor licenses are in a one-mile radius of El Primo.

Evergreen Terrace warm-up

O’Dekirk said the council is likely to vote at the Aug. 18 regular meeting on whether to spend $15 million to buy Evergreen Terrace, the housing complex that has been the subject of a 10-year legal fight for eminent domain.

officials commented on Evergreen Terrace in response to questions from residents.

The Housing Authority of Joliet will make a presentation to the council Tuesday on Evergreen Terrace, O’Dekirk said.

City Manager Jim Hock said while the city has to send a check for $15 million to the court by Sept. 1, ownership would be delayed by an appeal. Owners have filed notice they will appeal, a process estimated to take between 18 months to a year.

“We’re not technically the owners until any kind of court appeal is final,” Hock said.

Plainfield Village Board passes ‘Cupcake Law’

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Homebased bakeries in Plainfield can now publicly sell baked goods with special benefits and restrictions.

The Village Board unanimously passed the “Cupcake Law” ordinance, as it is known, Monday at its village board meeting.

The ordinance conforms to the state Food Handling Regulation Enforcement Act, which defines a “home kitchen operation.”

The law allows permitted small home-based bakeries to operate under a different set of rules than already-established, larger bakeries.

Notably, the designation allows home bakeries to bypass local health regulations, which could be unnecessarily burdensome on new bakeries that are starting from scratch.

The home baking operation is limited to $1,000 in gross sales per month. Notice must be given that products were prepared in a home kitchen, and the village has the right to inspect “We’re operating legal-

“Now we’re going to have to look at getting the permit,” Perez said. “We’ll have to see how this will work going forward.”

Variances

Two village code variances also were approved by trustees.

A resident living at 12465 Falcon Drive, who claims people have been cutting across his yard to get to the Wal-mart

directly south of him, asked to extend his fence in his corner side yard.

The request was one of many similar requests that have come across and been approved by the Village Board, Village Planner Michael Garrigan noted.

Trustee Edward O’Rourke recommended village staff to

review the village code to see how it could accommodate those residents living on corner lots.

“It would remove an unnecessary burden,” he said.

But while Trustee Bill Lamb thought it was worth considering, he said there was a lot of logic for requiring variances for those types of properties.

Trustee Garrett Peck recommended village staff to also look at how trees and bushes, along with fences, impact line of sight across neighboring yards.

A secondary monument sign for the Presence Healing Arts Pavilion getting built at 16615 S. Route 59, which would violate village code by being situated less than 800 linear feet of the main business sign, was allowed to remain after trustees voted.

Lamb asked about any plans for lighting the sign, an issue that two residents had protested last month.

Village planner Michael Garrigan said developers hadn’t come up with specifications for lighting, but they would need to gain staff approval for a permit.

Governor includes Grundy in disaster proclamation

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com Gov. Bruce Rauner has included Grundy County in a disaster proclamation for 23 Illinois counties for a period running from early June to late July.

The proclamation could lead to financial relief for homeowners and government agencies affected by the June 22 tornado in Coal City.

But Coal City has not yet qualified for federal assistance, said Joe Schroeder, director of the Grundy County Emergency Management Agency.

“There’s no guarantee of that,” Schroeder said Monday. “It’s just one of the steps leading to that.”

Rauner apparently is trying to put enough disasters into one application so Coal City and other areas across the state would meet the threshold amount needed to qualify for financial assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

“It’s kind of unprecedented in Illinois,” Schroeder said. “Other states have done it in the past.”

Coal City Mayor Terry Halliday said officials have been working with state legislators to find a way to seek federal disaster relief.

Rauner said a series of storms in June and July caused heavy rainfall, flash and river flooding, tornadoes and straight-line winds in 23 counties stretching from Alexander County on the Ohio River to Grundy County, The Associated Press reported.

Damage assessments will start this week in Grundy County and elsewhere, according to Rauner’s office.

The governor said officials from FEMA, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency, the U.S. Small Busi-

ness Administration and local emergency management agencies will assess damages to homes and businesses.

“It puts some numbers on paper so we can get more numbers on how much damage there was,” Schroeder said. “It will be a lot of work over the next two weeks.”

Depending on the assessment results and whether FEMA deems Illinois qualified for relief, financial assistance could be available for individual homes and government agencies, Schroeder said.

In Coal City, a total of 884 properties were damaged by the EF3 tornado.

Batinick to hold second discussion on budget

MONEE TOWNSHIP – A Lockport man is being held on $1 million bond after being arrested Friday and charged with several counts of sexual assault.

Will County Sheriff’s police said deputies were called Jeffery Thursday to A. Harlan take a report at a residence in Monee Township. A 13-year-old girl was later interviewed at the Will County Children’s Advocacy Center.

Jeffery A. Harlan, 52, of the 1100 block of East Division Street, was arrested and charged with six counts of criminal sexual assault.

HOMER TOWNSHIP – A 75-year-old Lockport woman died after a traffic crash Sunday.

Will County Sheriff’s police believe a 2011 Nissan driven by a Romeoville man did not obey the stop sign at Smith Road and 135th Street. About 5:13 p.m., Jerry Moretti, 51, drove into the intersection and struck a 2002 Mazda driven by Joan D. Karczmarek, according to sheriff’s spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer.

Moretti’s Nissan went into the south ditch. Northwest Homer firefighters extricated Karczmarek, who was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, where she was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 7:30 p.m, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Hoffmeyer said Moretti was also treated at Silver Cross for minor injuries. He was cited for disobeying a stop sign and

failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

“Initial reports indicate that alcohol was not believed to be a factor,” Hoffmeyer said.

Library officials to discuss expansion

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The community is invited Aug. 12 and 13 to give more feedback on expansion plans for the Plainfield Public Library during scheduled informational meetings.

After the last round of public meetings on the plans, library officials and architects have narrowed options for expansion to building a new library on the existing site at 15025 S. Illinois St. in downtown Plainfield.

“These next presentations are with more solid guidelines in place,” said Carl Gilmore,

president of the library’s Board of Trustees. “We’ll start to see what the possibilities are for the inside layouts.”

The population of the library’s district has more than tripled since 1990, but the library has operated at about 27,000 square feet throughout that time.

The close quarters have library officials, employees and patrons feeling cramped.

A 2009 referendum asking taxpayers for funds for a major renovation failed. But library officials have been carefully planning a significant expansion or complete rebuild of the library to be funded by a proposed referendum next year.

Survey: One-third of Illinois social service agencies cutting services

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Human service agencies statewide are dipping into cash reserves and providing services to fewer people as they grapple with the state’s budget impasse, according to a new statewide survey conducted by United Way of Illinois.

Of the 400 human service agencies that responded, more than one-third said they have tapped into cash reserves to weather the government shutdown, according to a United Way news release. And of those, 70 percent say they have three months or less of cash on hand.

A prolonged state impasse would lead to deepened cuts, said Karen Nall, executive director for United Way of Grundy County, which serves as a funding arm for many charities and nonprofits in the county.

“We haven’t seen any programs cut yet, but we are on the cusp,” Nall said. “It’s a shame there are so many people who need services. Once these are gone, they will fall through the cracks. We’ll create a domino effect.”

Survey respondents represented a range of service

Source: United Way of Illinois categories including youth development, early childhood education, mental health, emergency housing, senior services and employment training, and varied in budget size from less than $500,000 to more than $15 million.

According to United Way of Illinois, agencies reported having to increase their waiting lists for services, referring clients to other agencies where possible, not filling vacant positions and laying off staff.

Nearly 20 percent of the agencies that responded will deplete their cash reserve by the end of August, according to the survey.

“The frustration comes in when [the state] expects us to provide more services,” he said.

More than half of the 46 agencies funded by United Way of Will County rely on state funding, he said.

The Will County organization has not reached its $3.76 million fundraising goal this year, he said. The organization is down about 8 percent but funding requests from agencies are up 15 percent.

He was a member of Vonore Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge # 658, and retired from General Motors in 1990. He was a veteran of the Korean War. He loved his church, golfing with friends and spending time with family.

She earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the College of St. Francis (University of St. Francis) in Joliet and a Master’s Degree in Music Education from DePaul University in Chicago.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel L. Highsmith, Jr. in 1992; her daughter, Teresa A. Highsmith Roberts; and great grandson, Austin William Roberts.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Marlene Sizemore (Alvin Jr.); grandsons, Patrick W. Roberts Jr., Samuel C. Roberts, Patrick J. Murphy, Jr., Gerald T. Schneider, Alvin Sizemore III and Lawson S. Sizemore; eleven great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews extended family and friends.

Mary was a Life Member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW Post #1284.

Mary enjoyed the outdoors, flowers, gardening, fishing and nature. She also enjoyed decorating for the holidays, socializing with neighbors and friends, was an avid reader and video game player. Most of all she loved her family especially all her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She looked forward to attending their activities and being with them. She was a loving, caring, thoughtful and independent person.

She touched many people’s lives and will be greatly missed.

Nonprofit gets $7.2M from Chase settlement

CHICAGO – The Illinois Equal Justice Foundation is benefiting from a $7.2 million windfall that the state was given in a settlement with Chase.

Last month, the bank settled allegations that it used illegal

tactics to go after struggling credit card borrowers and agreed to pay $95 million to 47 states.

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan decided the Chicago-based nonprofit would receive the state’s cut.

Now the Illinois Equal Justice Foundation, which helps choose which nonprofits get funding through the state’s annual appropriation for legal aid for poor residents, has the most money it’s had in years.

Leslie Corbett, head of the Illinois Equal Justice Foundation, told the Chicago Tribune she’s been fielding nonstop phone calls from organizations that want a share of the Chase settlement.

In its last round of grant-making, Illinois Equal Justice Foundation selected 16 recipients out of about three dozen applicants, including East St. Louis-based Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, Rockford-based Prairie State Legal Services and Chicago-based LAF.

ST. LOUIS – Gov. Bruce Rauner offered little insight Monday into whether Illinois, which the federal government said ranks near the bottom in emissions-reduction goals, will join other states and challenge new stringent rules for power plants.

The first-term Republican’s office responded cautiously after President Barack Obama announced his much-anticipated Clean Power Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from domestic power plants – within 15 years – by more than 30 percent from 2005 levels. In a one-sentence statement, Rauner said his administration is assessing the measure and its “impacts

BALTIMORE – Baltimore police and civic leaders launched a partnership Monday with five federal agencies that will embed their special agents with city homicide detectives, bidding to quell an upswing in homicides and other violent crime in that city.

Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake was joined by State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby, Acting Police Commissioner Kevin Davis, and U.S. representatives Barbara Mikulski, among others, to announce the start of the Baltimore Federal Homicide Task Force.

“We have doubled down on our commitment to focus on repeat violent offenders, and that’s what we continue to do in a more collaborative and intentional way,” Rawlings-Blake said.

“We are increasing the resources, we are increasing the collaboration and increasing the partnership at all levels. This is our next step in our all-hands-on-deck approach to decreasing violence.”

The partnership is embedding two special agents from each of the five crime-fighting federal agencies on the streets with homicide detectives for the next 60 days.

The agencies are the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, Secret Service, U.S. Marshals Service and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

The homicide rate in Baltimore began to skyrocket in May, when the city saw 42 homicides in a single month.

There was a brief dip in June, with 29 killings, however the number shot up again in July, breaking a 43-year record. The uptick comes after rioting in the spring over the death of Freddie Gray, the black man critically injured in police custody.

For several years “American cities have not seen an uptick in homicides we’re seeing in 2015,” Davis, the acting police commissioner, said Monday.

“Now we’re back at the table, and our cities are looking at Baltimore. They want to know what Baltimore’s going to do about it.”

Davis had said Sunday that more people are arming themselves on the streets, and that the department has seized 20 percent more guns than it had by this time last year.

Davis also said the influx of prescription pills – 32 pharmacies were looted during the April 27 riot and nearly 300,000 doses of prescription medication stolen – has contributed to Baltimore’s spiking violence.

Mikulski said local and federal partnerships are powerful, adding special agents don’t just bring their badges to the streets but also their “know how.”

Mikulski noted, for instance, that the ATF has a specialized crime lab to study weapons and the bullets they fire.

“We can get those bul-

lets and see: are they from a single killer? Are they from a gang? And when that FBI agent is shoulder-to-shoulder with the homicide unit, he brings all the knowledge from Quantico. We’ve got the whole country on the side of Baltimore now,” Mikulski added.

Mosby attributed to the spiking violence to violent repeat offenders, “a small number of individuals responsible for the majority of the crimes.” Mosby warned those inclined to reach for a weapon that “we are going to go after you with everything that we have. Collaboratively, we will get the job done and convict you.”

U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings, in his remarks Monday, appealed to those considering committing acts of violence in Baltimore. He pleaded with them to put down their guns and “allow people to live.”

“The only people making good now are the morticians,” the Maryland Democrat said. “And I say our city is better than that. It’s not just the murders and the shootings. I’m begging you, put your guns down.”

To the editor: Clients of an area human-services provider recently told me they would be dead without the state-funded services they are receiving. Those services could end next month unless the state of Illinois adopts a fiscal 2016 budget.

There is a way to break the budget impasse. The Illinois Senate could vote Wednesday on legislation to freeze property taxes statewide for two years and revisit Illinois’ school funding formula. A similar proposal sponsored

by Senate President John Cullerton fell four votes short of passage July 15. No Republican voted “yes,” but Senate Republican Leader Christine Radogno

described the proposal as “a good effort.” The two Senate leaders indicated they are open to further discussion.

Bipartisan passage of this measure would signal that Democrats and Republicans can work together. It could clear the air and motivate the two parties to work together crafting a balanced fiscal 2016 budget worthy of support by the General Assembly and the governor.

We’re all living in Rauner World now If there was any doubt before last week, there’s zero uncertainty now. Gov. Bruce Rauner won’t allow anyone else to interfere with his dominance of the Illinois Republican Party.

When the party was out of power for 12 years, several independent actors tried to influence elections from behind the scenes, elbowing people out, putting people in. This is a diverse state, and the party has numerous factions, economic and social. All of those factions have de facto leaders.

One of those independent actors has been Ron Gidwitz, a moderate, wealthy business executive and onetime gubernatorial candidate with a network that includes lots of his rich friends. He ran the monied wing of the party.

Gidwitz used his and his friends’ money to boost candidates who were to his liking. He backed Sen. Kirk Dillard for governor in 2010, for instance, then switched his allegiance to Bruce Rauner four years later. That move did more to hurt Dillard than it did

to help the mainly self-funding Rauner because it totally dried up Dillard’s money, leaving him unable to compete effectively until organized labor finally entered the race on his behalf.

After months of public silence, Gidwitz reemerged last week. Sources said he has been bad-mouthing U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk behind the scenes for quite a while. A recent Michael Sneed item in the SunTimes about an anonymous top Republican who wanted Kirk to step down from the Senate was widely pinned on him.

Kirk has had his problems of late, forced to apologize for – or at least back away from – some racially charged and just plain weird remarks. Numerous Republican leaders privately have expressed shock at the bad press he’s generated for himself. Kirk has had to fight off rampant speculation about his future ever since his massive stroke, and his oddball statements during the past few months have kept the rumor mill at a fever pitch.

So, not long after Hinz called the Kirk campaign for comment about Gidwitz’s statement, Gidwitz himself got a call. It wasn’t a very nice one, either.

“He sounded like a beaten man” after Rauner’s forceful message was relayed to him, a GOP source said that evening.

Soon after, Gidwitz called Hinz to fully retract his comments and endorse Kirk’s re-election.

I’ve always liked Gidwitz and respected him. But the days of Gidwitz and others successfully acting independently are over.

Gidwitz’s complete backtrack was one of the more humiliating scenes I’ve witnessed in quite a while. Others most surely took notice.

Providence looking for another big season

The Providence Celtics will have some key performers back at important spots as they defend their Class 7A football title.

cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – When a state champion graduates the majority of its starters, it’s often difficult to make another title run.

That scenario applies to last year’s Class 7A champion Providence, which figures to have just four or five starters back on each side of the ball.

The graduation losses were magnified because seven of the Celtics’ eight Chicago Catholic League Blue selections were seniors, including the Lawless Award winner, quarterback Justin Hunniford, and the coMost Outstanding Offensive Player, receiver Miles Boykin.

But although there will be some big shoes to fill this fall, the cupboard will be far from bare for veteran coach Mark Coglianese and his staff.

The Celtics have some key performers back at important spots, which likely will allow them to contend again for the CCL Blue title and make a good run in the state playoffs.

Providence’s lone returning All-CCL Blue selection from last year’s 13-1 squad is senior inside linebacker Brendan O’Hara. He’ll be joined on that side of the ball by linemen Tyler Schiemann and David Chamot and defensive backs Zack Pych and Mike Madej.

“On the defensive side, we’re looking to be quicker,” O’Hara said. “We always have to play our part, and we can’t be renegades. The seniors from last year really taught the guys who are stepping into their positions what to do and how to get it done. I like the effort that we put in every day at practice. We go as hard as we can all of the time.

“We have lot of experience and a lot of good leadership and some guys returning at key positions. It’s great to play in the CCL Blue because it’s the best conference in the state, and it gets us ready for the playoffs and prepares us to play against the best teams and make another run.

“We have to do our jobs and not be selfish, and we need to listen to our coaches since they know what they’re talking about. They have the best

Junior Richie Warfield had a big season running the football in 2014, and he’ll be joined in that regard by senior Mike Markasovic, who also will be a featured target once again at receiver. Seniors Tom Younker and Travis Woerner are

back along the offensive line.

“I’m really excited to get back on the field with kind of a new core group of players, but we all share the same goal as last year, and we’re kind of carrying that momentum into this year,” Warfield said.

“We’re learning from our mistakes and always trying to get better.

“At the beginning of last season, nothing was really expected from Providence Cath-

olic football. But this year, we’re kind of the ones who have the targets on our back, and we know that everyone is going to be gunning for us, so we just have to be even more ready with our preparation from week to week. We have to hit the ground running and play hard.

“I feel like this team has a lot of camaraderie with each other. We were really close throughout the offseason, and we’re really close on the field this year. Last year, the seniors gave us a blueprint on how to do the right things, not just at practice but in the community and at school. We’re trying to emulate that this year while still making it our own team.”

A lot of things came together for Providence to capture

its 10th state championship, including its first in 10 years.

Although last year’s performance doesn’t guarantee anything, being the defending champion has its advantages.

“We have the title of defending champions right now, but we also have new tools in the shed,” Markasovic said. “It’s a target on our backs, but it’s also in the past, so we have to look forward. This year, we have a lot of different types of weapons. I’m excited to see how things will fit together throughout the season and see what we can roll out on the field.

“I think the two keys for us are hard work and confidence in our plays. Last year, it was all about working hard and believing in each other. Everyone has a route on offense or a blocking scheme, and it all has to work together in order to execute a play.

“Our senior and junior classes have always been pretty close, and we’ve had a good past year. The new people will find their place, just like I found my place last year. The guys taught me everything, and I’m so thankful for that, and I’m trying to pass that along here.”

Minooka graduate Mike Foltynewicz would like to be a starting pitcher for his major league career.

The Atlanta Braves are giving him the opportunity to show he can be a starter at the ultimate level, but they also feel he can be an effective relief pitcher. Stay tuned for a final decision.

Foltynewicz was scheduled to get the start Monday night when the Braves hosted the San Francisco Giants. Entering the game, Foltynewicz, who has split time between Triple-A and the majors this season, was 3-3 for Atlanta with a 5.04 ERA. He had appeared in 13 games, 10 of which were starts. In 602⁄3 innings, he allowed 76 hits and 20 walks while striking out 60.

Meanwhile, Tanner Roark (Wilmington) also has had the experience of starting and relieving for the Washington Nationals. A starter virtually all of last season, Roark in 2015 has started six games and relieved in 22. In 702⁄3 innings, he is 4-4 with a 4.71 ERA, having yielded 79 hits and 13 walks to go with 44 strikeouts.

Left-hander Tony Cingrani (Lincoln-Way Central), who had been on the disabled list, returned to Cincinnati and started against the Cubs on July 22. He had a bad third inning and finished allowing five runs in 22⁄3 innings. The next day, he was sent to Triple-A Louisville. He made one start there before being placed back on DL. Two other Joliet area products are on the Triple-A level, both with St. Louis’ team at Memphis.

Middle infielder Dean Anna (Lincoln-Way East) has hit .367 over his last 10 games to raise his average to .268 (89 for 332) with 16 doubles, three triples, three home runs and 34 RBIs. Right-hander Zach Petrick (Morris) is 6-5 with a 4.31 ERA. In 22 starts, he has pitched 1231⁄3 innings and allowed 131 hits and 24 walks

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush One popular theory making the rounds in Chicago these days is the Bears have enough firepower on offense to be a playoff contender this year by scoring a bunch of points and improving to just mediocre on defense.

But how is a Bears defense that was 30th in total defense last season, 17th against the run, 31st against the pass and, most damningly 31st in points allowed suddenly going to go from awful to mediocre?

Bears fans hope the answer is a flood of new veteran free-agent and rookie talent, including Pernell McPhee, Antrel Rolle, Jarvis Jenkins, Mason Foster, Sam Acho, Alan Ball, Tracy Porter and Eddie Goldman, and the hiring of Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator.

Is the talent actually better this year? There are a lot of new bodies, but only Rolle is a proven star, and he will turn 33 this year.

Gone are Lance Briggs and Charles Tillman, who were proven stars, and Stephen Paea, who had a breakthrough season last year.

And Willie Young and Lamarr Houston are trying to rebound from serious injuries.

Then there’s the not-so-minor detail that the Bears are trying to take this hodge-podge of players and make the switch from a 4-3 scheme to a 3-4.

I’d call it “Mission Impossible” were it not for the presence of Fangio.

Bears defenders clearly are buying what Fangio is selling.

Tim Jennings is fighting to be one of only three returning starters from last year’s group, and he says of Fangio, “Strategy, man!

I think he puts guys in position to make plays.

“We’re looking forward to him putting us in the right position.

He’s a very smart man as far as putting guys in position to make plays.”

McPhee was signed to be the linchpin of Fangio’s group, and he’s right in line with Jennings, saying, “I think it’s real tricky.

McPhee believes Fangio will make these Bears downright scary.

“I think we’re going to put fear in the other teams’ offense,” he said. “When they see us come out there, they’re going to be like, ‘Woah, these guys are playing, everybody’s flying to the ball, everybody is being very aggressive.’”

So, is it wishful thinking or justifiable optimism? History suggests it could be the latter.

Fangio’s first job as defensive coordinator was with the expansion Carolina Panthers. In the team’s first year in the league, with an expansion roster, they were seventh in total defense, 10th against the run, 14th against the pass and sixth in points allowed.

Fangio didn’t do quite as well with the expansion Houston Texans in 2002, but they still were a lot better than last year’s Bears, finishing 16th in total defense and 20th in points allowed.

In 1999, Fangio took over a Colts team that had finished 29th in total defense and points allowed the

season before and guided them to 15th in total defense and 17th in points allowed.

In his first year in San Francisco in 2011, the 49ers were fourth in total defense and second in points allowed after the club finished 13th and 16th the year before.

Asked if Fangio’s track record of instant success is where Jennings’ newfound confidence comes from, Jennings said, “Absolutely.

It gives us a confidence that he knows what he’s doing. He knows the league. He knows this game well.”

I believe Fangio is one of the best defensive coordinators in the NFL, and some of his current troops’ inexperience in a 3-4 will be mitigated by the fact they’re really going to be more of a hybrid than a straight 3-4, playing a lot more onegap than two-gap schemes.

How much better will they be than last year? Fangio still needs players to make plays, and how many playmakers he actually has still is a huge question mark.

By NATE ATKINS natkins@chicagofootball.com BOURBONNAIS – As a rookie a year ago at this time, Charles Leno felt as if he had stepped into a new world.

“Playing at Boise, we played guys in the Mountain West like Fresno and Nevada. No knock on those guys, but I’m going against Jared Allen,” he said after Monday’s practice.

“Come on now.”

Flash forward to now, and the 2014 seventh-round pick is not exactly in a brand new role – still a backup tackle on a line that returns Jermon Bushrod and Jordan Mills – but he said he feels different. He started one game and played just 32 snaps last season, but logged an entire Charles Leno year of NFL practices, teaching him exactly what to expect both physically and mentally.

“Year One, everything’s moving so fast,” Leno said. “Now, it’s all right. You can slow it down a little. You don’t have to be out of control all the time. You understand the offense.

You understand the plays. You understand the defenses.”

Leno also now has a role with the Bears that feels as if it’s solidifying. He’s their swing tackle, meaning he works to be able to step right in for either Bushrod on the left side or Mills on the right.

It’s a job that’s in his wheelhouse coming from Boise State, where he started one year at right tackle and two at left. It’s also necessary now with Mills (foot) and Bushrod (back) missing significant portions of the offseason program. The pair also combined for five missed games last season.

Leno said he already feels more comfortable using Adam Gase’s playbook, citing the attacking, run-oriented approach that feels similar to the one he ran at Boise State. He said his goal now is to add some muscle to his 6-foot-3, 300-pound frame to become a better brute edge force.

He got his chance to try it all out Saturday, stepping in at left tackle for the 31-year-old Bushrod, whom John Fox said was taking a rest day for his back. It was only a one-day move, but it showcased the Leno he’s trying to brand himself as in Year Two: ready for anything.

“I’d say left tackle I’m more comfortable with,” Leno said. “The left tackle, he’s probably going to get the best athlete on the field over him. The right tackle, that’s probably the second or third best athlete. … It’s not really a big difference. It’s like riding a bike once you switch over.”

SUBMITTED REPORTS LAFAYETTE, Indiana – After rolling through the Region tournament on its home field the previous week, the Channahon Mustang 10U baseball team took its turn at the Zone tournament this past weekend.

Things started well for Channahon when it defeated WEA of Indiana, 17-0, in the first game Thursday. That put Channahon up against host Lafayette, Indiana, in the second round Friday.

The local team walked away from that with a 14-7 win.

In the semifinals Saturday, Channahon lost to Mt. Vernon, Illinois, 13-3, which forced the Mustangs to play against Tri-Village, Michigan, to earn a rematch against Mt. Vernon for the title. Unfortunately, that did not happen, as Tri-Village collected a 14-4 win to eliminate Channahon from the running.

Tri-Village beat Mt. Vernon 10-1 on Sunday, forcing a winner-take-all game. Mt. Vernon rebounded from the loss to score an 11-3 victory and earn a berth in the World Series in Youngsville, Louisiana.

Connie Mack World Series:

Minooka graduate Cristian Sanchez was named player of the game as Prairie Gravel of Chicago won its opening game Sunday, 15-0, over host team 4C-Club Sox in the Connie Mack World Series at Farmington, New Mexico.

Sanchez went 3 for 4 with a two-run homer and double and had four RBIs.

Skyler Schmid of Plainfield and Nicholas Beckwith of Lombard finished fourth in the nation in freestyle pairs at the USA Roller Sports Figure Skating Na-

tional Championships at Albuquerque, New Mexico.

They were the youngest competitors in the top four.

The two-week competition was held at the Albuquerque Convention Center.

Top skaters from each region in the United States competed.

Schmid takes lessons at the Lombard Skate Club, where Beckwith also is a member. They have been taking pairs freestyle lessons from coach Jim Mueller for the past year, but this was only the third time that they skated together in a competition. They competed in jumps, lifts, spins and coordinated footwork choreographed to music in their three-minute routine.

Schmid’s 6-year-old sister, Summer, placed third in singles freestyle at Regional competition. However, her Tiny Tots division is too young to skate at the Nationals.

Hoffman claims his seventh late-model win of race season SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – A late caution behind the leaders off a restart ended the race Friday night as Eddie Hoffman won his seventh late-model feature of the season at Grundy County Speedway.

Chris Cooling was coasting from the lead position early in the race, but a caution on Lap 18 changed things. Soon after that restart, Hoffman took over the lead, and David Einhaus moved into the second spot, which is where he finished in the 30-lap event.

Cooling claimed third place, followed by Larry Schuler, James Gregait and Scott Koerner. Brett Sontag set the fast time at 15.118

seconds. Cooling won the first heat ahead of Schuler and Koerner. John Nutley claimed the second heat, with Gregait second and Einhaus third.

John Ventrello won the 25-lap Mid-American feature, followed by Tom Knippenberg, Luke Baldwin, Geoff VeZain, Kevin Gentile and Kevin Murphy. Knippenberg set the fast time at 16.537. Jim Kachel, Marty McKinney and Ventrello finished 1-2-3 in the first heat.

Baldwin won the second heat ahead of Joe Vinachi and Matt Clemens.

Seth Blommaert captured the 25-lap street stock feature. Spencer Leake was second. Cheryl Hryn, Craig Matteson, Zach Sontag and

Tim Stewart rounded out the top six. Jake Bradley’s fast time was 17.687. Matteson won the first heat, with Bill Serviss second and Ken Benson third. Rita Fields prevailed in the second heat, ahead of Stewart and Christy Penrod.

In the 15-lap 4-cylinder feature, Cirk Lindemuth won for the first time this season, followed by Ricky Wilson, Jim Gross, Danielle Dobczyk, Eric Boudreau and Kyle Royster. Dan Scheissing set the fast time at 19.900. Dobczyk, Alex Gray and Lindemuth were in the top three spots in the first heat. Mahtook single in ninth lifts Rays over White Sox

CHICAGO – Mikie Mahtook singled with two outs in the top of the ninth inning to drive in Logan Forsythe and give the Tampa Bay Rays a 5-4 win over the White Sox on Monday night.

Forsythe started the winning rally with a one-out walk. Evan Longoria had three hits and an RBI. Rays prospect Richie Shaffer went 0-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch and a walk in four plate appearances before leaving the game in the seventh.

Jake McGee (1-1) pitched a perfect eighth to get the win. David Robertson (4-3) took the loss.

Jose Abreu and Carlos Sanchez each had a two-run home run for the Sox, who have dropped four of five following a hot streak.

Cubs call up OF Szczur

PITTSBURGH – The Cubs recalled outfielder Matt Szczur from Triple-A Iowa and designated left-hander Clayton Richard for assignment Monday night before their game with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Szczur was hitting .295 with seven home runs, 26 RBIs and 19 stolen bases in 58 games with Iowa.

In 32 games with the Cubs earlier this season, he batted .211 with one homer, eight RBIs and two steals.

Support group at Timbers of Shorewood provides encouragement, resources If you go

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent SHOREWOOD – When Roger Bromley and his wife, Connie, packed up and moved from their home in Maroa into his mother’s Joliet house to become her caregivers, the responsibility was more than he anticipated.

“Her doctor told me I needed to get help – not help with her, but help for me, because of my stress,” Bromley said, adding his mother had dementia. “I couldn’t tell that I was under that much stress, but other people around me could tell.”

Within a year of the move, Bromley joined a caregivers support group at Leeza’s Place in Joliet – a facility created by TV personality Leeza Gibbons where caregivers could go for help and resources.

“I met a bunch of other people who were going through the same things,” Bromley said. “Most of them longer than I had.”

When Leeza’s Place closed, Bromley worked with The Timbers of Shorewood staff to start a new caregivers support group. That is in its second year and open to anyone in the community – not just those who live at The Timbers or have loved ones there. It meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays.

“It’s good to talk it out and get it out on the table. … We are an encouraging group,” Bromley said.

Caregivers need care, too

Bromley said he found statistics that showed many caregivers succumb to illnesses before their loved ones because they are so busy taking care of another they ignore their own health.

At his first support group, Bromley learned how to develop patience for his mother, who eventually lost the power to reason out her fears and fantasies. He also learned how

“Mom thought she was pregnant one time,” Bromley said. “And she would repeat the same question over and over. ... She got upset with me many times. She would throw me out of the house. I snapped at her one time, and I learned at Leeza’s that was normal.”

Family medicine physician Dr. Muneeb Qadri, of Presence Medical Group in Joliet, feels support groups for caregivers are valuable.

He has seen the consequences caregiving can have on his

own patients.

“They sometimes don’t realize all the things they do for them, and they take on so much that they forget to take care of themselves,” Qadri said. “Caregiving is stressful physically and psychologically, and it can take a toll. ... As a primary care physician, it is important for us to identify that.”

Other benefits

Caregivers support groups have additional benefits.

Bromley said they are great for learning about various facilities that handle dementia. Members also might know about resources, such as grants, that are available for respite care.

Bromley continued with the caregivers support group at Leeza’s Place after his mother died in 2011, then brought it to The Timbers in 2014. The Timbers support group averages eight to 12 caregivers each week.

Some who attend are living with a loved one for whom they care. Others’ loved ones are in a facility.

Their families include those with dementia, cancer, macular degeneration, genetic disorders – men and women, wives and husbands, greataunts and sisters.

Dave Pickard of Braceville takes care of his wife of 48 years who has Alzheimer’s disease. It actually was his wife, years ago, who first

recognized her symptoms as the beginning of dementia and advised her husband to start going to a support group.

“My wife went to work one day and forgot how to turn the computer on,” Pickard said. “She stopped at Leeza’s and said she thought I ought to start going to the support group.”

Pickard said he did, and the decision was a good one.

“Unless you’ve actually been a caregiver for someone with dementia, you don’t know what they’re going through,” he said. “It’s 24/7.

You have no time for anything and nobody to talk to.”

Pickard, who now attends the support group at The Timbers of Shorewood, said some people might have trouble talking about their situations at the beginning. They are free to sit and just listen.

“You’re not alone,” he said.

“It makes your journey easier.

They’re walking the same walk you are.”

No matter what time of day you are playing bridge, keep your eyes wide open and analyze what has happened.

In today’s deal, look at the West hand. South opens one spade, West makes a textbook takeout double, North jumps to four spades, and everyone passes. What should West lead?

Note North’s response, which is weak (below game-invitational strength) and promising at least five-card support. (If North has 5-3-3-2 distribution, perhaps he should pull in one notch and raise only to three spades.)

There are three candidates for West’s opening lead: the spade ace, diamond seven and club two.

If West just has to wait to score tricks with his four honors, he should cash the spade ace, then exit with a diamond.

Here, though, he must lead a low club to have a chance to defeat the contract. What happens after that?

At the first trick, East must table his club jack, the bottom of touching honors when playing third hand high.

South wins with his ace and leads a trump to West’s ace. What now?

that in recent years doctors have discovered that some pre-cancerous polyps are particularly hard to see. They lie flat against the colon wall. The doctor needs a really clean colon to reliably spot them.

Different medical centers will provide different instructions for bowel prep. Here’s one example: • A few days before the colonoscopy, start eating a low-fiber diet: no whole grains, nuts, seeds, dried fruit, or raw fruits or vegetables.

• The day before, don’t eat solid foods. Consume only clear liquids like clear broth, black coffee or tea, clear juice, clear soft drinks or sports drinks, Jell-O, popsicles, etc.

• The afternoon or evening before, drink the first dose of the laxative preparation. The exact instructions will depend on the bowel prep used and the time of your colonoscopy.

• Throughout the entire prep period, drink lots of fluids. Keeping hydrated clears your colon and maintains your electrolyte balance.

• Six hours before your appointment, drink the second dose of the liquid laxative.

• The day of the colonoscopy, drink clear liquids only. Don’t eat or drink anything two hours before the procedure.

If you can’t get the liquid laxative down, your doctor can prescribe anti-nausea medication.

Finally, if you’re still having trouble with the bowel prep, remember: This short period of discomfort could help save your life.

Dear Dr. K: It’s been 10 years since my last colonoscopy. I’m dreading my next one, especially drinking a gallon of liquid laxative. Has colonoscopy prep gotten more tolerable in the last decade?

Dear Reader: Yes, but that still doesn’t make it fun. And you can’t avoid it: You want the doctor to be able to clearly see every inch of your colon.

For that, you need a good cleanout.

As you probably know, getting a periodic colonoscopy really is important.

Simply put, it reduces your risk of getting and dying from colon cancer. These cancers, and growths that can turn into cancer (polyps), not only can be spotted by colonoscopy: They also often can be removed before they spread. Find it, and cure it.

That’s the goal. But to find it and cure it, the doctor needs to be able to see it.

However, it is true that for many people (myself included), preparing for colonoscopy is often more unpleasant than the procedure itself. It involves dietary restrictions, powerful laxatives and diarrhea.

The colonoscopy prep is also more unpleasant than the colonoscopy itself because a person getting a colonoscopy often is given a relaxing sedative just before the procedure. You get a little sleepy and a little dreamy, and you don’t have much memory of the procedure.

Fortunately, colonoscopy prep has improved in the past 10 years. And the days of downing a gallon of laxative to prepare for a colonoscopy are over. You still have to drink a liquid that will trigger bowel-clearing diarrhea. But you don’t have to drink as much. And you can drink it in two doses, rather than all at once.

I spoke to Dr. Catherine Cheney, a gastroenterologist at Harvard-affiliated Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. She noted

Showing respect and following your orders are not the same thing. It is a mother’s right to care for her baby as she sees fit, and you should show HER the respect she deserves by allowing her to do that and not turning it into a power struggle. Many hospitals have social workers on staff, and that would be a place to start asking what is available.

Dear Abby: When we visit my parents’ graves, we always leave flowers. Invariably there are flowers also at my father’s -- not put there by my wife and me. Because Dad has been gone since 1963, we can’t figure out who could be putting flowers on his grave only. My sister thinks he had a secret girlfriend. I don’t think so.

Dear Abby: Whatever happened to respecting one’s elders and recognizing grandparents as head of the family? I recently returned from visiting my son, his wife and my new grandchild. My son’s wife and I had many disagreements on how to care for my grandchild. Instead of respecting my years of experience as a mother and appreciating my help, she chose to ignore my instructions and advice.

After I returned home, I was told by my son that I was no longer welcome to visit my grandchild unless I apologized to his wife for trying to undermine her parenting. I told him she should apologize to ME for not showing me respect as the grandmother.
