YMCA – Joliet The Joliet YMCA was founded in April 1882, and, like other chapters, promoted health and welfare based on Christian principles.

In March 1888, G. Julian Barnes was hired as the architect and construction began on the first building, located on the northwest corner of Clinton and Ottawa Streets.

In February 1902, the board of directors passed a motion to close the YMCA and sell the building.

The YMCA officially ended in Joliet with this measure.

By 1926, the local Joliet community strongly supported the re-establishment of the YMCA. Wishing to have a downtown location, community members began a successful fundraising campaign to raise the needed money, nearly $500,000, to cover the land and construction costs of a new facility.

Completed in 1928, the seven-story building, located on the southwest corner of Webster and Ottawa Streets, was designed by the D.H. Burnham & Company architectural firm.

The building has a contrasting red brick and limestone facade with corner quoins, banding and water table accentuated with stone medallions, columns and capitals at building entrances and wrought iron railings at the lower windows.

All of the features are common elements of the Georgian Revival style.

A Women’s Division annex was completed in the early 1950s.

Today, the building offers affordable rental homes for senior citizens.

Rain dampens crowd for Family Fiesta, but not its spirits

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – For more than 15 years, Joliet’s Family Fiesta followed the Mexican Independence Day parade held during the second week of September.

A substantial crowd would walk over to Bicentennial Park after the parade, but a few years ago the Spanish Community Center decided moving it up a month might bring even more people with better weather.

Qué lástima! It hasn’t worked out that way.

“We’ve had it on the first weekend of August ... the second ... the third. And it always rains. It follows us,” said Elizabeth Nevarez, executive director of the Spanish Community Center.

And only minutes after Nevarez lamented the weather Saturday afternoon, the skies opened up for another shower, forcing vendors to pull their handmade jewelry and clothing under their awnings and the Aztec folk dancers to move closer to the theater band shell.

“I think they’re doing the wrong rain dance,” Nevarez said.

About two dozen people watched from the hillside as the Ocelotl-Cihuaoatl group danced while wearing feathered headwear, ornate shoulder pads and “chachayotls” – leggings woven with shells that clack together to make noise along with the drum and conch shell.

“We have families together. We’re trying to teach our kids the old way,” group leader Rosa Gaytan said before the dance. Gaytan became emotional while lighting incense to call “Mother Earth and the elements that keep us alive” for permission to begin the dance.

At the south end of the park, three jump houses were set up across from the craft exhibitors. Several stands offered food, from traditional Mexican

All the signs detailing the sugar content of various junk food items were written in both

English and Spanish.

“A large percentage of our clients are Spanish-speaking,” Haller said. “We don’t just want to treat people who are sick; we want to promote wellness.

Sometimes that means making adjustments for [educating] people from different cultures.”

According to the Spanish Community Center, 70 percent of its clientele is Latino, 25 percent black and 5 percent white.

The center offers daycare; preschool and adult education pro-

grams; immigration, licensing and taxpayer assistance; and social services, such as a food pantry.

Nevarez said the fiesta remains the center’s largest fundraiser each year. Sponsors support the event itself, vendors pay a fee to sell their wares and the center has its own concession as well.

“The music is always the biggest draw. The crowd always gets bigger when the bands go on, and this year there are five headliners,” Nevarez said.

Bryndis X Siempre, Viento y Sol, Sonora Dinamita, Cadetes de Linares and Los Nuevos Invasores were among the groups scheduled to perform during the event.

School program aims to ease students’ transition

PLAINFIELD – Jennifer Archer wants sixth-graders who enter Indian Trail Middle School to feel welcomed and eighth-graders who are close to leaving to be empowered.

Archer, the school’s assistant principal, developed the Positively Affecting Wildcat Success program to help incoming students make an easier transition from elementary to middle school with the help of eighth-grade mentors, who in turn receive more leadership experiences.

“I think the fact that a sixth-grader can go up to an

eighth-grader [at Indian Trail] and give them a high-five means a job well done,” Archer said.

The eighth-grade mentors part of the PAWS program, which takes part of its name from the school’s Wildcat mascot, engage in social and team-building activities with incoming sixth-graders. They help the new students learn about their teachers and show them how to get to their classes. The mentors continue to assist them through the year.

The transition from an elementary to middle school setting can be nerve-wracking for some students.

“I always felt like one of the

good kids,” said Elizabeth Taylor, a sixth-grade student. “But when I came here, I was like, ‘Everyone is so much taller than me.’ I actually thought I saw my fourth-grade teacher, but it was one of the eighthgrade girls.”

The PAWS program – with 65 mentors – has helped her to meet people at the school and not feel alone, she said. She’s gotten to know many eighth-graders who were nice and made it easier to get used to middle school life, she said.

PAWS is in its third year, and Archer said the program is important to help sixth-grade students not feel like Indian Trail is a “big, scary place” but

GEDC promotes Nikki Wills

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – The Grundy Economic Development Council has promoted its longtime office manager, Nikki Wills, to business director.

“I’m most looking forward to working with our prospects, investors and Nikki Wills community leaders,” Wills said Thursday.

Wills has worked as the office manager since 2006. In her previous capacity, she was instrumental in technolo-

gy upgrades, managing office finances and media promotions, according to a news release from the GEDC. In her new role, she will support business development activities, implement the retention program and provide statistical analysis for GEDC clients.

Wills’ promotion follows the June departure of GEDC Vice President Doug Pryor, who left to become the Grundy County administrator.

“I am excited to announce Nikki’s promotion. She has worked very hard and been a valuable asset to the GEDC for the last nine years. Thanks to her previous experience, she

will be able hit the ground running,” CEO Nancy Norton Ammer said in the release.

“Nikki has established important relationships with business and community leaders and will do a great job in her new capacity as business director.”

Wills received her Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration from Lewis University. She and her husband, Darin, live in Coal City.

Their two sons graduated from Coal City High School and are attending college.

Norton Ammer said Thursday the office manager position will be filled with a parttime office assistant.

“There’s so much more, I think, that the need is, in some respects greater,” she said.

At the end of the seventh grade year at Indian Trail, students are nominated to become PAWS mentors. Archer said it was important not to select only students who are academically high achieving.

One mentor, Matt Kurzrock, said PAWS helped him feel like he could “stick out more as a leader.” Archer said Kurzrock is an example of someone who was able to come out of his shell through the program.

Archer was involved in a similar program at East Aurora High School called Link Crew. Many high schools use the program to help freshmen transition easier, Plainfield District 202 school officials said.

But Archer said the transition from elementary to middle school is on a greater scale: Students go from not having lockers to having them and then having schedules that change throughout the day.

Downtown Joliet is alive and well!

“We’ve had a very successful summer,” said Richard Fredrickson, interim manager of City Center Partnership, a cooperative effort to promote the downtown.

“One of our biggest events was Nitro Nite July 9,” Fredrickson said. The huge party before the Lucas Oil Route 66 NHRA Nationals featured 10 NHRA Raiders signing autographs for fans.

Nearly 8,000 people showed for the live entertainment, food and classic cars.

“All these events showcase and brand downtown Joliet, and they don’t just happen,” Fredrickson explained, adding that presenting sponsors for Nitro Nite were Hawk Auto Group and GPHomestay.

In June the Joliet Public Library and Joliet Historical Museum bring Star Wars to life, with family activities in both venues.

by CCP, includes authors, illustrators, extra terrestrials, games and learning experiences.

“We had a parade of stormtroopers and every other Star Wars character, led by the American Legion Band,” Fredrickson said. The majority of kids in attendance were in costume.”

The 15th annual Kidzfest, sponsored by Lewis University, drew nearly 8,000 in July for exhibits, games and family activities. Jugglers, deejays, police dog demos, face painting and princess makeup were among the 60-plus exhibitors who provided the fun, all for free.

WILMINGTON – It was 1987 and 22-year-old Wilmington firefighter Larry Tutor and his cousin, Ricky Tutor of Joliet, were installing an antenna on the roof of their house when it fell onto a power line.

Electricity flowed through both Larry’s arms and across his body, said Larry’s stepmother, Fran Tutor of Wilmington. Larry was airlifted to the burn unit at Cook County Hospital and spent three months in the hospital, part of that time in a coma, she said.

Both of Larry’s arms were amputated just below the elbow because of infection.

Damage to Larry’s muscles and tendons prevented him from receiving bionic arms, only prosthetic ones with hooks at the end, Fran said.

After completing rehabilitation, Larry moved to Mississippi, where he was born and still had family. He served on the fire department in Sardis for 15 years, part of the time as the department’s assistant chief, and where the local newspaper featured him in an article.

Larry’s father, Jerry Tutor of Wilmington, a police officer, said Larry’s desire for firefighting stemmed from his great passion to help others, which bonded them in the line of duty.

“A lot of times when I’d be out on call,” Jerry said, “he’d be out there, too.”

Despite rehabilitation, Fran said many of the skills Larry re-learned, he relearned on his own. His drive and determination to return to his former life was amazing to behold.

“He taught himself to drive with his nubs,” Fran said, “and he actually got pulled over and was told that he had to use his hooks. So a friend took him to the back roads and taught him to drive with

his hooks.”

Larry fished, hunted, rode horses, camped with his nieces and played a tremendous amount of pool. His daughter, Mandy Birkel of Plainfield, who was not quite 3 when her father was electrocuted, said Larry belonged to a pool league and won numerous trophies.

No matter the activity, Mandy said Larry was always trying to make people laugh.

He was easygoing and not one to feel sorry for himself.

“He always felt someone else had it worse,” Mandy said.

In an email, Megan Mikula of Coal City, Larry’s younger daughter, said she never thought of her father as disabled. Megan said Larry was the man who caught her in his arms when he picked her up from school. He was the man who taught her to drive.

“He could do anything with those hooks, possibly even more than any other dad – because he obviously was the best dad in the entire world,” Megan said. “He was our protector, our life coach and the man that walked us both down the aisle! This world won’t be the same without him.”

Toward the end of Larry’s service with the fire department, he began a lawn care business, even cutting people’s grass for free if they didn’t have any money, Megan said.

Missing his daughters, Larry returned to Wilmington in the fall of 2012 with the intention of launching a lawn care service locally in the spring.

But in May 2013, Larry was too sick to work. After experiencing increasing pain near the scarred area on his abdomen, Larry was diagnosed with Marjolin’s ulcer, a rare and aggressive skin cancer associated with past traumatic burns.

Larry again fought back, with radiation, chemotherapy and a positive outlook for his

Precious child of Jesus, who loved her unconditionally. Born on Valentine’s Day, 1993, twelve minutes after her twin brother, James.

Emily jokingly liked to fashion herself as a Norwegian princess, owing to her proud Scandinavian heritage. This stunningly beautiful, blue-eyed, brunette princess went to be with the King of Kings on August 26, 2015, very unexpectedly to us, but called by her King.

Emily accepted Christ as a young child, and loved Him until the day that she died. She sometimes lived her life as a prodigal, yet never stopped seeking Him, and His Word, which she cherished. A pink King James Version of the Bible, which was required for her elementary school, was one of Emily’s most treasured possessions.

Left to hold her memory close in heart, are her mother, Pam Buckley; her father, Jim Buckley; her twin brother, James Alexander; and her sisters, Amanda Marie and Olivia Katherine. She is also survived by many aunts and uncles, being especially close to her aunt, Anne Marie Konopack, who was a person that was always there for Emily. Additionally, she was dearly loved by her grandparents, Robert Konopack and Brynda Ramsey; and Leroy and Geraldine Buckley.

She was a graduate of the Cathedral of St. Raymond Grade School, St. Francis Academy High School, class of 1949 and the College of St. Francis. Formerly employed by the Public Service Company and was a second grade teacher at Crystal Lawns Elementary School in Plainfield. Ann also spent many years as a substitute teacher for the Joliet and Plainfield School systems. She was a member of St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church.

His 2007 book, “Musicophilia,” examines the relationship between music and the brain, including its healing effect on people with such conditions as Tourette’s syndrome, Parkinson’s, autism and Alzheimer’s.

NEW YORK – There was the blind man who had the disastrous experience of regaining his sight. The surgeon who developed a sudden passion for music after being struck by lightning. And most famously, the man who mistook his wife for a hat.

Those stories and many more, taking the reader to the distant ranges of human experience, came from the pen of Dr. Oliver Sacks.

Sacks, 82, died Sunday at his home in New York City, his assistant, Kate Edgar, said. In February, he had announced that he was terminally ill with a rare eye cancer that had spread to his liver.

As a practicing neurologist, Sacks looked at some of his patients with a writer’s eye and found publishing gold.

In his best-selling 1985 book, “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat,” he described a man who really did mistake his wife’s face for his hat while visiting Sacks’ office, because his

brain had difficulty interpreting what he saw. Another story in the book featured twins with autism who had trouble with ordinary math but who could perform other amazing calculations.

Discover magazine ranked it among the 25 greatest science books of all time in 2006, declaring, “Legions of neuroscientists now probing the mysteries of the human brain cite this book as their greatest inspiration.”

Sacks’ 1973 book, “Awakenings,” about hospital patients who’d spent decades in a kind of frozen state until Sacks tried a new treatment, led to a 1990 movie in which Sacks was portrayed by Robin Williams. It was nominated for three Academy Awards.

Still another book, “An Anthropologist on Mars: Seven Paradoxical Tales,” published in 1995, described cases like a painter who lost color vision in a car accident but found new creative power in black-andwhite, and a 50-year-old man who suddenly regained sight after nearly a lifetime of blind-

CHICAGO – The owner of Illinois’ 11 nuclear reactors must decide next month whether to close its Quad Cities plant, one of three generating stations Exelon Corp. has said are in danger of closing if lawmakers don’t approve a surcharge on electric bills to boost profits.

Exelon said it should be rewarded for producing reliable, carbon-free electricity that will help Illinois meet an Obama administration mandate to reduce greenhouse gases. But opponents said ratepayers should not have to bail out an unprofitable plant for a private company that’s still making money.

The company learned that one of the at-risk plants – in Byron in northern Illinois – is going to make millions after a recent electricity reliability auction, while the future of the third plant, Clinton in the central part of the state, is still in doubt.

U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service opposes quarry

LOWELL, Indiana – The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service is opposing a proposed limestone quarry in northwestern Indiana, saying it likely would have an adverse effect on the Kankakee River ecosystem.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is reviewing a permit request for the Singleton Stone LLC quarry in southern Lake County near Lowell, about 60 miles southeast of Chicago. If approved, the permit

would allow it to pump between 12 million and 52 million gallons of water a day into the ditch, which would worsen erosion and deposit more silt and sand in the river, The Kankakee Daily Journal reported.

“You’d think if they were pumping that much water and sediment, they would have to do something about it,” said Elizabeth McCloskey, the fish and wildlife biologist who submitted the comments. “They have not offered anything.”

Marty Maupin, IDEM permits specialist, said the department received between 45 and 60 comments during the comment period, including the comment from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

“Normally projects do not get any comments or few comments at all,” Maupin said.

Mount McKinley to be renamed Denali

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama will change the name of North America’s tallest mountain peak from Mount McKinley to Denali, the White House said Sunday, bestowing the traditional Alaska Native name on the eve of a historic presidential visit to Alaska.

“With our own sense of reverence for this place, we are officially renaming the mountain Denali in recognition of the traditions of Alaska Natives and the strong support of the people of Alaska,” said Interior Secretary Sally Jewell.

Appalachian Trail partying raises ire

By ALANNA DURKIN The Associated Press BAXTER STATE PARK, Maine – When Jackson Spencer set out to tackle the Appalachian Trail, he anticipated the solitude that only wilderness can bring – not a rolling, monthslong frat party.

Shelters where he thought he could catch a good night’s sleep while listening to the sounds of nature were instead filled with trash, graffiti and people who seemed more interested in partying all night, said Spencer, who finished the entire trail in only 99 days.

“I wanted the solitude.

I wanted to experience nature,” he said. “I like to drink and to have a good time, but I didn’t want that to follow me there.”

Spencer confronted what officials said is an ugly side effect of the increasing traffic on the Georgia-to-Maine footpath every year: More people than ever causing problems.

At Maine’s Baxter State Park, home to the trail’s final summit on Mount Katahdin, officials said thru-hikers are flouting rules by openly using drugs and drinking alcohol, camping where they aren’t supposed to, and trying to pass their pets off as service dogs.

Hundreds of miles away, misbehaving hikers contributed to a small Pennsylvania community’s recent decision to shutter the sleeping quarters it had offered for decades.

With last year’s release of the movie “Wild,” about a woman’s journey on the Pacific Crest Trail, and what experts call a growing interest in outdoor activities, the number of people on the Appalachian Trail has exploded.

More than 830 people completed the 2,189-mile hike last year, up from just 182 in 1990, according to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, based in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. At Baxter, the number of registered long-distance hikers grew from 359 in 1991 to more than 2,000 in 2014.

The growing number of hikers is becoming a management nightmare at Baxter, where officials said they also believe the culture and attitude of the people using the footpath is changing.

Jensen Bissell, director of the park, said in a letter to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy late last year that AT hikers are “open and deliberate in their desire for freedom from all rules and regula-

tions.” He warns that the trail may need to end somewhere besides Katahdin if something doesn’t change soon.

“If we have 2,000 hikers now, how will it be when we have 3,500 or 4,000 hikers?”

Bissell said.

Some said there appears to be a growing sense of entitlement among thru-hikers, many of whom are just out of college or have enough money to leave work for months at a time.

“We had to take off half a year of working, and not a lot of people can do that,” Karl Berger, a 24-year-old Maine resident known on the trail as GQ, said from a camp site in Baxter, where he was resting with his father behind finishing the hike up Katahdin.

“I don’t think a lot of hikers acknowledge that it’s a privilege to be out here.”

And, the reason that message was delivered so forcefully was his coaching staff – Jake Jaworski, Rick Raasch, Dave Douglas, Jim Sharp, Cory McLaughlin, Tim Swanson, Nick Clancy, Josh Greenback and Chris Kinsella – enjoyed an outstanding night.

“The message to come out of here is teams are not going to be able to load the box on us,” Sharp said after the offense, led by quarterback Cade Earl, accumulated 441 total yards, with 346 coming on seven plays.

“Our coaching staff did a heck of a job calling plays, on both sides of the ball,” Sharp said. “And you have to credit [strength coach] Francis Ruettiger, too, for having our guys in the shape they are in.”

On the other hand, Providence was saddled with poor field position early, which hampered what it could do offensively.

After JCA’s Michael Johnson picked up a dropped snap and raced 49 yards to set up a first-and-goal at the 3, the Celtics’ defense delivered with a goal-line stand to temporarily maintain the early scoreless tie.

Of course, that led to Providence starting its first possession on the 2-yard line, the next one on the 5 and one on the 13 a couple possessions later. That limits the playbook big time, especially against the aggressive defense JCA showed it has.

“I think that first quarter took us out of our game, out of our rhythm,” Providence coach Mark Coglianese said.

“With us having the field position we had, that gave them a lot of confidence. We had to get away from our running game some, and there are adjustments we are going to have to make because we don’t have the big targets to

decided not to play football his senior year to concentrate instead on baseball. The Hilltoppers set up pass plays where they were able to go over the top to Harold Davis and to Johnson. Four of Earl’s five completions went for 34, 28 and 36 yards to Davis and 77 yards to Johnson.

The Hilltoppers, of course, have things to work on. As Sharp said, “We have to do a better job covering kicks. Lukasik does a great job kicking off, but he doesn’t quite have the leg strength to put the ball in the end zone the way [Brian] Bravo did last year.”

All in all, however, an impressive win at Providence is quite a beginning. The Hilltoppers, 4-8 all-time against the Celtics, have won three of the past five meetings. It also is their first on Providence’s field since the inaugural matchup in 1989.

Optimism in the JCA camp is running high.

Arrieta pitches no-hitter for Cubs in win over L.A.

By BETH HARRIS The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – Jake Arrieta pitched the sixth no-hitter in the majors this season and second against the Los Angeles Dodgers in 10 days, leading the Cubs to a 2-0 victory Sunday night.

Arrieta (17-6) struck out a season-high 12 and became the first 17-game winner in the big leagues by throwing baseball’s third no-hitter in less than three weeks.

Astros right-hander Mike Fiers blanked the NL West-leading Dodgers, 3-0, on Aug. 21. Los Angeles had never before been no-hit twice in one season.

Arrieta got the benefit of a close call for the official scorer in the third inning, when Kike Hernandez reached on a fielding error by second baseman Starlin Castro.

Hernandez hit a one-hopper at Castro, who tried to play it on the short hop as the ball bounced off him. The play was ruled an error but probably could have gone either way.

Hernandez was sacrificed to second before Arrieta struck out Jimmy Rollins to end the inning.

Carl Crawford nearly broke up the no-hit bid with two outs in the seventh, but Castro caught Crawford’s line drive up the middle with a running effort.

With the Dodger Stadium crowd roaring, Arrieta struck out all three batters in the ninth – including Chase Utley on his 116th pitch to end it.

The 29-year-old pitcher was mobbed by teammates near the mound, and they jumped their way in a huddle over to near the Cubs’ dugout where they high-fived Arrieta.

Arrieta became the first Cubs pitcher to throw a no-hitter since Carlos Zambrano on Sept.

14, 2008, against Houston in a game that was moved to Miller Park in Milwaukee because of Hurricane Ike. Arrieta walked one and helped the Cubs snap a four-game skid on the last night of their sixgame West Coast trip. He

finished August with a 6-0 record, tying Boston’s Joe Kelly as the only pitchers with that many wins in the month.

The right-hander lowered his ERA to 0.43 in August while becoming the first Cubs pitcher with that many wins in the month since Rick Sutcliffe in 1984.

The Cubs had 13 hits and snapped the Dodgers’ fivegame winning streak.

Wood (9-9) took the loss, giving up two runs and eight hits in six innings. The left-hander struck out seven and walked one.

Hisashi Iwakuma of the Seattle Mariners pitched a no-hitter Aug. 12 in a 3-0 win against Baltimore. Cole Hamels of Philadelphia, San Francisco’s Chris Heston and Washington’s Max Scherzer also have thrown no-hitters this season.

The closest Arrieta came to a no-hitter previously was a one-hit shutout against Cincinnati on Sept.

CHICAGO – The White Sox have turned to several rookies during their lackluster season.

Third baseman Tyler Saladino took advantage of his opportunity Sunday with his first career game-ending hit.

He drove in the winning run with a single in the 11th inning, and the Sox rallied to beat the Seattle Mariners, 6-5.

Alexei Ramirez singled and Tyler Flowers walked to start the rally before Ramirez advanced to third on Carlos Sanchez’s flyout and scored on Saladino’s hit off David Rollins (0-1).

David Robertson (6-3) struck out three in two innings for the victory as the teams split the four-game series.

The Sox tied the game in the ninth on shortstop Brad Miller’s throwing error to first on pinch hitter Sanchez’s grounder. Trayce Thompson scored after he singled off Carson Smith and stole second.

Tokyo wins Little League title

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – With more than 42,000 fans cheering against them, the Tokyo players found themselves down eight runs in the first inning of the Little League championship game against Lewisberry, Pennsylvania.

That brought out manager Junji Hidaka’s inner Yogi Berra and sparked a record rally that saw the Kitasua Little League pound out 22 hits in an 18-11 comeback victory in a battle of undefeated teams.

“I told the players it doesn’t end until it ends,” Hidaka said through a translator.

Tokyo responded with seven runs in the second, four in the third inning and five in the sixth.

It was the 10th title for Japan, second behind Taiwan’s record 17. It’s the third title for the Kitasuna Little League team, which also took home championships in 2001 and 2012.

Day wins in a blowout at Barclays

By DOUG FERGUSON The Associated Press EDISON, N.J. – Jason Day powered and putted his way to another blowout against a world-class field Sunday at The Barclays.

Fresh off his first major at the PGA Championship, Day pulled away early and poured it on with three long birdie putts on the back nine at Plainfield. A birdie on the closing hole gave him an 8-under 62 for a six-shot victory over Henrik Stenson.

Day closed with a 63-62 weekend and finished at 19-under 261. He won two weeks ago by three shots over Jordan Spieth with a record to par at 20-under 268.

The victory moves the 27-year-old Australian to the top of the FedEx Cup after the opening playoff event, assuring that Day will be among the top five who have a clear shot at the $10 million bonus at the Tour Championship.

More compelling is another race for No. 1.

With his second straight victory, and fourth of the year, Day remains at No. 3 in the world but now enters the picture with Spieth and Rory McIlroy for golf supremacy. All three will have a mathematical chance to get to No. 1 at the Deutsche Bank Championship next week at the TPC

His biggest disappoint, it seemed, was from the race being worth double points. It was one of two events this season worth double points – the Indianapolis 500, won by Montoya, was the other.

“When you do this and you put double points on the last race, it doesn’t matter what you’ve done all year,” Montoya said.

Power, the reigning IndyCar champion, was devastated for Team Penske. The organi-

“I feel so gutted for the team to not win on a draw there,” said Power, who complained that race control had too much of an effect on the race with long yellow flag periods.

Rahal, who was wrecked last week at Pocono Raceway to have his deficit pushed from nine points to Montoya to 34

“Our thoughts and prayers, first, are for Justin’s family,” Dixon said immediately after exiting his car.

Wilson was honored before the race with a tribute video, a moment of silence and the playing of “God Save the Queen,” England’s national anthem.

Oriol Servia flew in from London overnight Wednesday to drive Wilson’s car, a request made by Wilson’s family. He finished 12th.

SONOMA, Calif. – Scott Dixon captured a fourth IndyCar championship by winning the season finale Sunday to snatch the title from Juan Pablo Montoya.

Montoya led the points from the season-opening race right until the final lap Sunday. But he finished the race in sixth, which allowed Dixon to tie him in the standings.

Dixon was awarded the title based on wins; Sonoma Raceway was his third victory, while Montoya had only two. The New Zealand driver entered the race third in the standings, 47 points behind Montoya. The race was worth double points.

“There was still a chance, and that’s what we were hoping for,” Dixon said. “I still can’t believe it. We were such a longshot.”

The victory was the 100th for Chip Ganassi Racing, while a Team Penske driver failed to win a championship in the finale for the ninth time

since 2002.

Team Penske was in trouble from the midway point of the race when Montoya hit Will Power. It sent the Colombian to pit lane for repairs, and he was mired in the middle of the pack for the bulk of the race.

Although he picked off a few positions, his break came eight laps from the end when Sebastien Bourdais spun Graham Rahal. Needing to get to fifth to win the title, he moved up one spot to seventh when he passed Rahal.

He got up to sixth when Bourdais was penalized, then had five laps to close a 3.5-second deficit on Ryan Briscoe to move to fifth.

Montoya made a hard charge, ultimately slicing Briscoe’s lead to 1.6 seconds, but he ran out of time to grab that final spot.

He was pragmatic after the race.

“It doesn’t matter what happened,” Montoya said.

“We had a few ways to win the championship, and we just threw it away. We didn’t close it.”

How to defend against an endplay

Last week, we looked at elimination and endplay by declarer. In those deals, the defenders could not avoid being trapped. Sometimes, though, they can defend effectively. There is one key point that must be borne in mind, which is highlighted in today’s layout.

South is in four spades. West cashes two heart tricks, then exits with a diamond. What happens after that?

Note South’s two-spade jump-advance of his partner’s takeout double.

So many inexperienced players bid the suit that they prefer at a minimum level regardless of point-count.

A minimum bid shows 0-8 points.

With 9-11, advancer must jump in his suit. (With 12 points or more, he cuebids the opener’s suit.)

Declarer mustn’t concede two club tricks. However, since only 13 highcard points are missing, surely the club finesse is losing.

After winning trick three, South draws trumps and cashes dummy’s diamonds. Now he leads a club. If East plays low, declarer covers with his eight.

This endplays West; he must either return a club away from the king or concede a ruff-and-sluff.

However, if East knows about defense against an elimination and endplay, he will play the club 10 at trick nine.

This gets West off the endplay and defeats the contract.

When declarer is trying for an endplay, it’s second hand high.

are many OTC antifungal preparations available in pharmacies. Unfortunately, there is no evidence that they work for toenail fungus (though they work for “athlete’s foot,” another fungal infection of the skin between the toes).

DEBRIDEMENT. In some cases, a doctor can scrape off the infected part of the nail.

LASER TREATMENT. One or two laser treatments will kill the fungus. But the infection often reappears.

SURGERY. Surgical removal of the nail will completely eliminate the infection. But your nail will not grow back afterward.

HOME REMEDIES. A study published in the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine found that applying Vicks VapoRub every day for 12 weeks eliminated the fungus in five of 18 people and reduced it in 10 others. I don’t know what prompted the doctors to do that study, but I’ll bet they got the idea from patients who had tried it and found it successful.

Finally, whether you’re trying to clear up a fungal infection or hoping to avoid getting one, the following can help: • Wash and dry your feet thoroughly every day.

• Wear socks that wick away perspiration.

(Acrylic is better than cotton.)

• Use antifungal foot powder daily.

• Avoid shoes that keep your feet from breathing.

• Wear sandals or flipflops in shower rooms at gyms or pools.

Dear Reader: Fungal toenail infections occur when a fungus infects the area under the surface of a toenail. Fungi love warm, damp environments, and the space inside our shoes provides the perfect habitat.

As the infection takes hold, it creates a strong, unpleasant odor. The toenail thickens and turns yellowish-brown. Eventually the nail may separate from the nail bed.

Fungal infections are notoriously difficult to get rid of, but there are things you can do to stop their spread and improve your toenail’s appearance.

First, visit a doctor to make sure your infection is, in fact, a fungal infection. A number of conditions, including age and psoriasis, can masquerade as fungal infections.

Dear Abby: Three years ago I gave my adult daughter, married with a child, more than $16,000 to help pay off her debts because she couldn’t pay her bills. It teaches children that it isn’t necessary to be social, offer to help clear the table, or be gracious and appreciative when someone prepares a meal for them.

While your children were sitting on their fannies after the meal, did you or your spouse TELL them you needed help, that their children needed minding and that their behavior was rude? Because if you didn’t, please recognize that the behaviors you described do not spring up overnight, and you may be partly responsible for how your children turned out.

“Not inviting them for a long time” isn’t the answer, because they may not get the “hint.” If you say what’s on your mind, you may startle them into modeling better behavior for their children before it’s too late. Putting into words how their behavior made you feel would be more direct and more effective.
