Dresden Mule Barn – Channahon In the early 1830s, Salmon Rutherford constructed an inn in a town called Dresden, which he platted along the future route of the I&M Canal.

Known as the Dresden Inn, Rutherford built the inn to accommodate and cater to the stagecoach traffic that came through the area. The town of Dresden flourished for a time and became important enough to warrant a post office that operated for a short time in the 1830s.

The construction of the Rutherford Barn, or what is commonly known today as the Dresden Barn, most likely was built in two stages, beginning in the late 1830s or early 1840s.

Built on the north side of the I&M Canal, the three-story, heavy timber, post and beam built barn measures 65-by-26feet and sits on a limestone (fieldstone) foundation.

The north half of the barn most likely predates the south half. After the canal berm was completed, the south section, which opens directly to the canal, was probably added to the existing building and possibly used for mule stabling. The addition of the south section made it possible to adapt the structure to a specific use, such as mule stabling.

The existing evidence of two periods of construction can be seen in the foundation walls, the still beams and the knee braces. In general, physical evidence such as changes in the thickness of the foundation walls, sizes of the sill beams, and the configuration of the knee braces indicate two periods of construction,

and thus the north half of the barn is probably the older section.

Alterations to the barn over the years included the addition of a hay track in the roof structure, the installation of a concrete drain for dairy operation (1908), and the pouring of a concrete floor to replace the original dirt floor in the north section (1924).

The structure at the old settlement of Dresden is thought to be the I&M Canal’s last surviving mule barn.

The old barn at Dresden was also used as a granary, and grain was stored in sacks for shipment on the canal.

The I&M Canal was officially closed to navigation in 1933, when the last sections of the Sanitary and Ship Canal were completed.

The then photograph, circa 1965, is a view of the old mule barn looking north across the canal. The now photograph shows a view of the barn today from Hansel Road in Channahon.

Mule barns housed mules when they became tired from towing boats along the canal.

These barns were maintained about every 12-15 miles along the canal route.

There is a strong possibility that the Dresden Barn was used as a mule barn, although the barn is on the opposite side of the canal from the towpath. While impractical, it is not uncommon for communities along the canal to have buildings located on the opposite side of the towpath.

Mass celebrates order of nuns’ impact on Joliet, world

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – One by one, 120 members of the century-and-ahalf-year-old Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate filled the Cathedral of St. Raymond’s last remaining empty pews Sunday.

Sunday afternoon’s Mass was celebrated to commemorate the Joliet-based order’s 150th anniversary – and its lasting legacy within the city of Joliet, the church and the rest of the world. “[These are women] who get up every day and recognize that their life is for Christ, that they live for the kingdom of God,” Joliet Bishop Daniel Conlon’s voice echoed through the expansive cathedral. “They faithfully responded to God’s calling.”

The order was founded Aug. 2, 1865 – when the city of Joliet was only 11 years old.

Over the last century-and-ahalf, the Joliet-based order held influence over the creation of much of Joliet’s institutions, having founded the University of St. Francis, the Guardian Angel Home, Our Lady of Angels Retirement Home, the Franciscan Learning Center and St. Francis Academy, which later merged to become Joliet Catholic Academy.

Sister Mary Frances Seeley was among those in attendance Sunday.

“Celebrating Mass in particular on this day, celebrates those who went before us, the present sisters, and the future sisters,” Seeley said. “We are all joined together.”

Seeley said the Joliet-based order epitomizes the meaning of “Ite, Missa est,” the often-heard farewell words for Mass services, which means “Go forth, the Mass is ended.”

“It carries the sense of mission,” Seeley said. “It’s the faithfulness of the sisters. Go where you are sent, go where there is a need.”

Joliet high school to report on YESS program success

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet high school officials are scheduled to give a presentation this week about a 10-year program that has improved the social and emotional welfare of their students, as it faces an uncertain financial future.

At 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Joliet Township High School Administrative Center, 300 Caterpillar Drive, school officials will recognize the 10year anniversary of the YESS program and give a brief report showing the success of the program.

The YESS, or Youth Experiencing Success in School program, is a collaboration between several social service agencies, government bodies and JTHS to give students on-site emotional and social support so they can achieve educational success.

Partners of the program include the Joliet Park District, Will County Health Department, Aunt Martha’s Youth Services and Guardian Angel Community Services.

The YESS program is a product of a federal grant that sustained it for the first five years until the funding ran out. Since then, funding for the program has been done in variety of ways that will be discussed Wednesday, JTHS

Superintendent Cheryl McCarthy said.

She said JTHS adopted the program because it was needed in the community.

“Knowing that we have a lot of services in the community but sometimes families don’t make their way to get to those services,” she said.

JTHS has seen a roughly 55 percent decrease in its expulsion numbers since 2009.

School officials said at a July 21 board meeting the YESS program was a factor in that decline.

But now funding for the program is scarce. She said the Will County Health Department has been funding the program but because of its own financial constraints, it will have to pull support.

Joseph Troiani, behavioral health programs director at the Will County Health Department, said the department has lost four state grants this year totaling more than $850,000, as well as a revenue lost for service fees. All of which impacted the health department’s ability to support the YESS program.

“My gosh, the kids we were able to serve … we were really creative in sustaining the program without [federal] funding,” Troiani said.

He said the health department provides clinical supervisors and direct services from graduate students in clinical psychology, counseling and social work. Many students as a result were able to find the treatment or services they needed to cope with their own mental health needs.

During the 2010-11 school year, 40 Joliet West students were referred to the program for addiction services, according data from Troiani. Among that group, students were either seen by a clinician, recommended for residential treatment or given other services.

One killed in crash in Plainfield SHAW MEDIA PLAINFIELD – A Plainfield resident died Friday evening after being involved in a single-vehicle crash.

Plainfield emergency responders were called at 7:01 p.m. Friday for a report of a single-vehicle crash on 127th Street near Elizabeth Drive.

Upon arrival, officers located a

crash scene involving a Chevrolet Camaro, according to a news release from Plainfield Police.

The preliminary investigation found the Camaro was traveling east on 127th Street from Elizabeth Drive when it left the roadway and impacted several stationary objects, causing major damage to the vehicle and ejecting the driv-

er, according to the news release.

Joseph G. Stiles, 48, was given emergency medical treatment on the scene and taken to Rush Copley Hospital in Aurora, where he later died.

The crash area was closed until about midnight while members of the Plainfield Police Crash Reconstruction Unit investigated the incident.

There’s nothing like it in the Channahon and Minooka area, said Danielle DeGraaf, where kids can buy brand name clothes at resale prices.

One event was recently held at the Minooka Village Hall, and another is scheduled for November just in time for the holidays.

Thanks to DeGraaf and some of the participating consigners, unsold clothing was donated directly to Chanooka Wish and will be “shopped” at no charge by the same eligible families when they pick up supplies.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 22, at the Minooka Jewel/Osco there will be the annual backto-school event with free food, games, balloons and all kinds of stuff for families to do. Jewel is bringing in 10 dietitians who will be offering suggestions to parents on quality, inexpensive lunch ideas.

Everything is free to the public, Koranda said. There will be some promotional items for sale, but any proceeds are being donated back to Chanooka Wish, along with donations from the store and local vendors. All the Jewel employees are also donating their time to the event.

The Channahon-Minooka Rotary Club’s backpack pro-

gram is another helpful event for families.

Starting in September and running through the school year, eligible kids get a weekly bag of snacks Friday afternoon to take home for the weekend.

During the week kids are guaranteed a meal at school, but on weekends when parents may be working, the food assures they are still getting healthy snacks, Rotarian Patrick Minor said.

The food is inconspicuously placed in each student’s backpack around lunch time, so no one but the student knows.

Anywhere from 50 to 70 kids from Channahon schools have participated in past years, up from 10 or 15 the first year, Minor said.

Minooka schools have about 10 or 15 participants.

Eligible families can check with their school principal to get the needed paperwork to join.

The program is supported by grants from Channahon Township and the Three Rivers Festival committee, along with Rotary fundraisers.

All of these programs are possible through the kindness of local businesses, churches, nonprofit organizations and even individuals who want to give back to their communities.

It’s hard to believe a new school year is almost upon us. While there’s nothing like anticipating summer vacation, there’s also a definite excitement about going back to school.

We didn’t have much money for our five-kid clan growing up in Michigan, but we always got a new pair of shoes and a few clothes. Unless you were me, the middle daughter, and got your sister’s hand-me-downs. But looking back, they were pretty cool used clothes.

Many area organizations work to ensure back to school is fun for kids and not so much of a drain on the wallet for families who can use some assistance.

Chanooka Wish is teaming up with a several businesses/organizations on several projects this year.

Pre-approved, eligible families will be invited to pick up their school supplies. Set up in a store-like atmosphere, the kids go through and pick out all the supplies on the lists handed out by their teachers. Everything is provided at no charge, Chanooka Wish President Carolyn Koranda said.

Big supporters of the event are Grace Bible Church and the Channahon Park District Leadership Camp, Koranda said. This year 132, area children are being helped.

started, the order created The Upper Room Crisis Hotline, the Groundwork Domestic Violence Program and the Center for Correctional Concerns, which provides education to Will County Jail inmates, she said.

There are nearly 160 sisters in the order today, many of whom are in Joliet or the U.S. More than half of the 17 who work in Brazil were in attendance Sunday.

Sister Margaret Guider, a member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate since 1980, said she now teaches at Boston University. Sunday’s celebration was an “opportunity for jubilee” for all that the Joliet order has done for the community.

“It’s all about mission and keeping that mission at the center of one’s life,” Guider said.

Zemont said the Joliet Franciscans are “alive with well.”

“Our spirit is strong,” she said. “We get up each morning trying to live our vocation with hope, hope in the Lord, hope for the future of religious life, and hope for the people of God, trying to faithfully answer the call of Jesus.”

No one took her job more seriously Plainfield woman and Harrah’s Joliet employee spread joy on and off the job

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Lisa M. Jolin said her co-worker of 15 years at Harrah’s Joliet, Melinda Mackey of Plainfield, was the nicest person.

Melinda, Jolin said, spoke kindly about and helped everyone. But she also had a knack for evoking laughter at company rallies.

“She would come up with the funniest skits,” said Jolin, executive administrative assistant at Harrah’s. “She had a tutu made – she was in her 50s at the time – and she would dance across the stage and do a cartwheel, just to get people to laugh. … She had the most infectious laugh.”

For more than 10 years Melinda helped nonprofit agencies receive grants from the Harrah’s/Caesars foundation, Melinda’s supervisor Darren VanDover, senior vice president and general manager at Harrah’s, said in an email.

Melinda, VanDover said, was instrumental in obtaining more than $2 million in grants and donations. He felt Melinda made Harrah’s a better place to work and Joliet a better place to live.

“No one took her job more seriously, but no one – and I mean no one – laughed at work more than Melinda,” VanDover said. “She was a complete joy to be around.”

On and off the job, Melinda spread joy everywhere. Jolin said Melinda delighted in watching people open gifts from her, knowing she had given each recipient what he or she desired. She treated charity requests the same way.

She was that good,” Jolin said. “She was so detail-oriented and she took so much pride in her work.”

Melinda’s sister, Barb Payne of LaGrange Park, said Melinda’s love for making people happy was partly because of her upbringing.

Melinda’s paternal grandparents came from Ireland and her maternal grandparents were Cossack Riders in the Ringling Brothers Circus.

Growing up, Melinda and her sister, Nancy Markham of Chicago, took Irish dancing lessons, Barb said. Melinda loved performing and – like her parents and grandparents – saw good in everyone.

Melinda simply took those traits, Barb added, to a higher level.

Melinda showered her nieces and nephews with gifts, gave cash to homeless people on the streets and donated to numerous charities, Barb said. Nancy said when Melinda was in high school, everyone referred to

Melinda’s closet of beautiful clothing as a boutique.

Unlike a boutique, Melinda freely lent her clothing.

“Whatever was hers, was anybody’s,” Nancy said.

Melinda applied that same attitude to her three-year lung cancer battle.

“She said, ‘I think God gave me this to be an example, to use me to see what works and does not work, so that when someone else gets sick, they’ll know how to help them – maybe find a cure using me,’ ” Barb said.

In 2011, Melinda joined the board of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Will & Grundy Counties, CEO Lisa Morel Las said. During Melinda’s time of service – which included her cancer battle – she consistently arrived first to meetings, full of enthusiasm and ideas.

The organization created the Melinda Mackey Board Leadership Award, made a plaque to hang in the BBBS office in perpetuity and presented the award to Melinda at an informal gathering.

Attendees, Las said, were Harrah’s employees, BBBS staff, and past and present board members. A week and a half later, Melinda was gone.

Melinda was 60 when she died July 19.

“She’s sitting in a wheelchair at the event, oxygen tubing out of her nose, very weak – probably a third of the size she had been,” Las said.

“She turned to me and said, ‘I’m just sitting at home, not doing anything. What can I do to help you?’ ”

Former President of Jackson Township Homemakers and member of the Twighlighters of Elwood. Norma enjoyed crafts and quilting. She was “one of the girls” and enjoyed plays, musical and luncheons with her friends.

Born in Joliet, lifelong resident of Lockport. Charlene was a graduate of Lockport High School (1953) and attended Taft and Fairmont elementary schools. Member of St. Dennis Church. She loved to work in her garden and was an avid interior decorator. She was a life member of the Lockport Woman’s Club.

During retirement she traveled around the states, especially spending much time during the winter months in Florida.

Preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Gladys (West) Jensen; and her former husband, Anthony Burcenski (1959).

Dale E. Talkington, age 58, late of Morris, and formerly of Minooka, passed away suddenly, Saturday, August 1, 2015, at Morris Hospital.

Born July 3, 1957, in Joliet, he was a life long area resident, and a 1975 graduate of Minooka High School.

He worked for Flint Hills Resources as a chemical operator from 1991 to the present, and was a proud member of the Fire Brigade there for many years.

Dale enjoyed fishing and the outdoors, but his passion was playing golf. He enjoyed his twice annual golfing trips and the many enduring friendships he made over the years through golf. He never met a stranger, especially on the golf course. He will also be remembered as a devoted husband and father, and a friend and mentor to many.

Willis E. Schubert, “Bill”, age 93, passed away peacefully, Sunday, August 2, 2015, at Rosewood Care Center.

Born in Joliet, and a lifelong Joliet area resident. A W.W.II U. S. Air Force veteran serving in the European Theater attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He also served in the Air Force Reserves for many years following his active duty.

Retired from Delta Airlines as an airline pilot captain after many years of service. Formerly employed by Northwest Airlines, Republic Airlines, and began his civilian aviation career with North Central Airlines.

Following Bill’s retirement with the commercial airlines, he continued in aviation by teaching others to fly in Joliet and Bolingbrook. Bill was also chief pilot for A&M Aviation and flew many charter flights following airline retirement. Bill especially enjoyed the peace and tranquility of his home, his oak tree, gardening, woodworking and caring for his animals. Bill had several published articles written on history, the Old West, and the Civil War. Loving father of William J. Schubert and Sharyn (Larry) Perinar; devoted grandfather of Larry (Patricia) Perinar, Jr., and Kari A. (Dennis) Sullivan; great-grandfather of Stacey, Brenna, Mitch, Ginger, and Rocky Perinar, and Jack and Fiona Sullivan.

1 killed when storm blows tent off its moorings at festival

WOOD DALE – One person was killed and 20 injured Sunday when a tent where people had sought shelter during a brief storm blew off its moorings and collapsed on some of the crowd at a festival in the northwest suburb of Wood Dale.

Mike Rivas, deputy police chief, said three people were seriously injured and 17 others had minor injuries and were either treated at the scene or transported to area hospitals.

He declined to give details of the fatality pending notification of family.

The incident happened at about 2:40 p.m. when a sudden storm brought high winds, hail and rain to the annual Prairie Fest, Rivas said.

“People sought shelter under the tent, and then it hit,” he said of the storm.

The tent was ripped from its moorings and fell on some people, said Craig Celia, a spokesman for Wood Dale. The remainder of the festival’s final day was canceled, he said.

The annual celebration known as the Prairie Fest is a four-day event with food, live music, a carnival and fireworks. Thousands of people attend and there were around 5,000 there on Saturday night, said a city council member for the area, Art Woods.

Parts of the Chicago area were hit by a brief, intense summer storm that brought high winds and left tree branches strewn on major roads, traffic lights out and snarled traffic.

The storm also prompted organizers to briefly shut down the popular music festival Lollapalooza in Chicago’s Grant Park on Sunday afternoon, although the music had resumed by late afternoon.

Task force hopes to help Mitsubishi, its employees

NORMAL – Officials in Bloomington, Normal and McLean County have set up a task force to help Mitsubishi Motors employees who will soon lose their jobs and help the company as it tries to find a buyer for its central Illinois auto plant.

According to The Pantagraph in Bloomington, the 27-member task force includes Gov. Bruce Rauner, U.S. Sens. Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk and U.S. Rep. Rodney Davis.

Mitsubishi announced last month that it will shut down the plant in Normal. The company hopes to find a buyer but the plant’s 1,200 employees will be out of work when the facility closes in November.

The task force plans to start meeting Thursday and hopes to help those workers find new jobs and help look for a buyer for the plant.

Bill signed requiring airport rooms for breast-feeding

CHICAGO – Breastfeeding at Chicago’s two major airports and others in Illinois will be easier soon under a new law endorsed by Gov. Bruce Rauner.

Rauner signed legislation Sunday requiring large airports such as O’Hare and Midway International to have lactation rooms by 2017. Smaller airports in the state will have to add the private rooms when building new terminals or renovating existing ones.

The weekend bill signing follows a Chicago City Council committee vote Friday on a similar proposal. The city’s aviation commissioner previously said O’Hare plans to install three lactation rooms by the end of the year. O’Hare and Midway each has one lactation room.

U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth of Illinois is pushing federal legislation to require large and medium airports nationwide to provide lactation rooms.

Rapper arrested; encouraged fans to jump barricades

CHICAGO – Chicago officials

said rapper Travis Scott is facing disorderly conduct charges after encouraging fans to jump over security barricades during his performance at Lollapalooza.

The rapper, whose real name is Jacques Webster, was arrested Saturday on the second day of the three-day music festival in downtown Chicago.

An email sent to his booking agent seeking comment wasn’t immediately returned.

Office of Emergency Management spokeswoman Melissa Stratton said Scott performed one song, then began telling fans to come over the barricades. She said Scott fled the scene but was taken into custody a short time later.

She said the situation was quickly handled and no fans were injured.

Scott will be charged with disorderly conduct, Stratton said.

A message left for Chicago police seeking additional information wasn’t returned Saturday night.

Safety cited in bid for more Winnebago County jail guards

ROCKFORD – Winnebago County officials pushing to hire more jail guards say that staff shortages are putting corrections officers in danger.

New Sheriff Gary Caruana is asking the County Board to approve a $6.7 million budget increase for more officers and equipment, including $1.4 million for 26 jail guards. The county faces a $2.1 million shortfall for the coming fiscal year, excluding the sheriff’s request.

The Rockford Register Star said the jail has 36 fewer staff members than when it opened 2007. The jail’s average population has dropped in recent years.

Jail officials also point to an Illinois Department of Corrections recommendation after a November inspection that encouraged county leaders to “explore possible options for increasing the number of security staff.”

RIO DE JANEIRO – The International Olympic Committee said Sunday it will order testing for disease-causing viruses in the sewage-polluted waters where athletes will compete in next year’s Rio de Janeiro Games.

And I was expecting to win, but then I sprained my ankle again and wrapped it up. I prayed and asked God to push me and help me get through this. I was down 6-0 – and then, out of nowhere, I just started kicking it up, and I ended up winning, and I tech’ed the guy.”

To “tech” someone – short for “technical fall” – means to win a match by getting a large enough lead in points that the match is ended early.

Although hampered by the sprained ankle, Timmons wrestled smartly the rest of the way – not surprising, considering his high school coach, Oster, was in his corner.

“I feel like I can work on different advantages, so I make sure to do that in practice,” Timmons said. “I let people get on my leg so that if I get in that situation in a match, I’m used to it. When kids would shoot, I would see it coming, and I would just sprawl and circle.

Timmons said that his big accomplishment took a little while to sink in.

“At first, it really didn’t kick in until after I called my dad and I told him that I’d tech’ed the guy,” Timmons said. “He told me that it was a big tournament that I won. I felt happy, since I realized that out of 69 guys, I was the best one. I made sure that I came to win, and I won. I was excited, but it really didn’t kick in until I woke up the next morning

HOMER GLEN – Trevell Timmons headed to the recent ASICS/Vaughan Cadet National Freestyle Championships in Fargo, North Dakota, with an ambitious plan.

The Lockport junior intended not only to win all of his matches in the competition but planned to do so in impressive fashion.

Some would call that a pretty lofty dream for an athlete who finished fifth at 152 pounds this past season’s IHSA Class 3A finals and did not place a year ago when he made his first trip to Fargo.

Not only did Timmons claim wins in all of his matches in this year’s event, he recorded six straight victories by technical fall, capping the event with a dramatic comeback win for the title.

After falling into an early 6-0 hole in the 152-pound championship match against Giullian Nakamatsu of Henderson, Nevada, Timmons rallied to capture a 16-6 victory.

He becomes only the fourth Porter wrestler to win a title at Fargo, joining Mark Stenberg (2009 Junior Greco-Roman), Haley Augello (2010 and 2011 Junior Women’s Freestyle) and Tyler Johnson (2013 Cadet Freestyle). Shayne Oster and Brian Rossi joined Stenberg as second-place finishers in the event.

But it’s not accurate to say that everything went according to plan for Timmons.

“Two weeks before I went, I was training OK, but then I had a dream where I lost in the finals pretty bad,” Timmons said. “So after that, I went from working out once a day to twice a day. When I went there, I was thinking that I was going to win, but then ended up spraining my ankle the first day of training camp. I started easing up and being a little lazy, but then my coach (Josh Oster) told me that I needed to push a little more since coaches were watching me.

“After my second win, I felt that if I didn’t tech everyone else, that it would be a disappointment because I didn’t

and realized that it was over and I had the title.”

The Porter wrestler, who joined Washington’s Jacob Warner (170) as the only Cadet Freestyle champions on firstplace Team Illinois, realizes the expectations are a whole lot higher for him now.

“After I won, coach Oster told me that the next thing was winning a state title, so I’m training for that,” Timmons said. “I’ll train more with my coaches and try to stay after practice for at least an hour, and then I train at home all of the time so I make sure that I’m ready for anything.

“I know that I have to wrestle well since coaches are watching me, so I don’t want them to say that ‘this kid isn’t ready for college.’ It’s a good thing that I still have two more years before college. Last year, I didn’t care if I got a loss, since state was all that mattered; but this year, I don’t want to lose to anybody.”

While Timmons was the lone Porter to place, defending IHSA champion Shayne Oster fell one win shy of being an All-American again, as did Abdullah Assaf, while newcomer Baylor Fernandes also fared well.

“The good thing is that we all had the same mindset to win,” Timmons said. “So while we were training, there wasn’t any playing around.

Everybody was focused and ready for it. When I see them training hard, it’s like a pride thing to me, because I want to be the best in the room. So if someone’s running two miles, I make sure that I’m running more because I want to be the top dog.”

It’s a good bet that if those in the sport didn’t know him before, they certainly do now.

“Now, I get to walk around and people will look at me and say, ‘That’s the kid that won the biggest tournament,’ ” Timmons said. “At first, people used to be a little nervous of me and say, ‘This kid is good.’ But now I know that I have a target on my back, but that’s better for me because I want a reason to train harder so that I won’t lose. I’ll be ready for whoever next year.”

Slammers rally but fall in 10th to Greys

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After battling back from a 6-2 deficit in the third to force extra innings, it looked as if the Joliet Slammers might be able to salvage the rubber game of their weekend series with the Frontier Greys.

But the Greys had other ideas and halted a six-inning scoring drought with Zach Tanner’s two-run smash to right in the top of the 10th, and that proved to be the difference as they captured an 8-6 Frontier League victory in 10 innings at Silver Cross Field.

“In the third inning, we gave up five runs, and that was tough,” Slammers manager Jeff Isom said. “We made a couple of mistakes in the field and gave up that home run. I didn’t like the way that we came out and we weren’t ready to play the game.

“But all of a sudden, we get through that inning and put

up zeroes with the bullpen, which was outstanding, especially in the conditions where the ball was flying. They gave us a chance to win the game – and we tie it up, and they get the two-run home run in the 10th. We had our best guy on the mound, and they hit a pretty good pitch on that one.

“In the ninth, we hit a couple of balls hard but didn’t have anything to show for it.

That was a tough one for us.

We feel like we’re in the middle of the playoff hunt, and we’re on the outside looking in, and these are games that we have to find a way to get.”

Dan Tobik yielded one hit and struck out four in three innings, and Luke Crumley gave up a hit while striking out two in two innings for the Slammers (27-39).

But after Navery Moore struck out two of the three hitters he faced in the ninth, the Greys (30-34) got to him in the 10th when Tanner (2 for 5) hit the night’s fourth homer.

“That was a tough one for us.”

But the Greys responded with a five-spot in the third, with the big blow being a three-run homer by Michael Antonio (4 for 5) against Slammers starter Andrew Strenge.

Lockport’s Meyer captures 2 national titles STAFF REPORTS JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Lockport’s John Meyer made news at the Class 3A boys track and field finals when he became the lone freshman in the field to earn a medal in an individual event at the large-school meet after placing ninth in discus.

But Meyer raised the bar from this past weekend when he captured a pair of titles in the boys 15-16 division at the USATF National Junior Olympics Track and Field Championships at the University of North Florida.

Meyer claimed top honors Saturday in discus, turning in a 163-foot effort on his second

attempt.

He stood seventh after his first effort, but his second try propelled him to the lead, and he maintained that advantage, holding off runner-up Jackson Morris, who had a 161-10 try in his sixth and final attempt.

Two days earlier, the Porter sophomore used a similar

game plan to capture the title in shot put. He led after his first try and then unleashed a 52-3¾ attempt on his second effort. Runner-up John Stefan turned in a 50-10¾ toss in his fifth try.

There were more than 40 competitors in both discus and shot put in the 15-16-year-old division.

PONY LEAGUE BASEBALL

Crest Hill All-Stars fall at Zone tournament SUBMITTED REPORT BAY CITY, Mich. – The Crest Hill Pony All-Stars dropped a pair of tough losses Friday in the North Zone tournament and was eliminated from the six-team competition.

Crest Hill lost a heart-breaker, 12-11, in an eight-inning game to Livonia,

Michigan, in its opener. The Crest Hill squad had led, 11-3, going into the bottom of the fifth inning and still was up, 11-7, going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but allowed four runs to tie the score. Livonia scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

scored one each in the top of the third and fourth and four more in the top of the fifth to cut Ottawa’s lead to 7-5 after a grand slam by Alek Trafton.

Aaron Darling, Roman Esquivel and Riley McIntyre also had hits for Crest Hill, which finished second in the state.

The team will be honored at the Crest Hill City Council meeting at 7 p.m. Aug.17.

Kyle Busch knew his Toyota was about out, too, his shot at a fourth straight win tapped out on the last lap.

One by one, fuel woes cost the contenders. But the pain at the pump for drivers pushing toward the finish line was the break Matt Kenseth needed to coast past them all in the final thrilling laps Sunday to win the NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Pocono Raceway.

The 400-mile race came down to fuel, and which cars had it – and which ones didn’t.

“I couldn’t catch them anyway, but I just wanted to get as close as I could in case they ran out,” Kenseth said.

Once they ran out, Kenseth not only had enough left in the tank to win, he pulled off a celebratory burnout.

Kenseth’s win continued the sensational summer run for Joe Gibbs Racing, making it five wins in the past six races.

Busch, who had the other victories, failed in his bid to become the ninth driver since 1972 and the first since Jimmie Johnson in 2007 to win four straight Cup races.

Busch had won three straight Cup races and four of five, swept the Xfinity and Cup races last weekend at Indianapolis and won the Truck Series event Saturday at Pocono.

Busch remained outside the top 30 in points, the second marker he needs to hit to qualify for the Chase.

JOLIET – Myron “Pete” Fulton, an accomplished athlete at both Lockport and Joliet Junior College during the 1960s, died last week at the age of 70.

He was Lockport’s second all-stater in football, earning the honor in 1962 as a quarterback for coach Bill Zimmer.

The two-time all-South Suburban League selection threw for 1,925 career yards, which was the school’s record for 21 years until broken by Bob Cernak.

He threw for 1,104 yards in his senior season of 1962, a mark that would stand until broken by Tim Sartori in 1979. His best game that year was a 229-yard effort against Thornridge, another standard that stood for 20 years until eclipsed by Cernak.

The Fairmont Grade School graduate threw 11 touchdown passes in 1962, a mark that

wasn’t surpassed until Sartori tossed one more in 1979 and his total of 18 career scoring passes finally was broken in 1985 by Spiro Voulgaris.

He and his brother, Bruce, also were standouts for coach Bill Connors’ basketball program. He scored 679 points from 1961 to 1963, leading the Porters in points in each season. Both brothers were selected to be among the Legends of Lockport Basketball in a 2007 ceremony.

Fulton earned his third all-SSL and another all-state award of 1962-63 playing baseball for coach Bill Kappmeyer. He was a member of the 1963 team that qualified for the state finals. For all of his achievements, he was inducted into Lockport’s athletics Hall of Fame.

He continued his success at JJC, with one of the highlights being a player on coach A.A. “Fizz” Wills’ 1965 basketball team, which finished sixth at Myron “Pete” Fulton is seen in a Lockport yearbook photo. the national tournament.

The Cubs still departed Milwaukee on Sunday with a four-game sweep of the Brewers after an eventful 4-3 win. The best part of all for the Cubs following their fifth straight win overall is they’re a season-high 10 games over .500 at 57-47.

Spot-starter Clayton Richard (2-0) and the Cubs’ bullpen limited the Brewers until the ninth, when Rondon allowed the first two runners to reach base with his team leading, 4-1.

Samardzija struggles, Sox fall to Yankees

CHICAGO – Jeff Samardzija’s second pitch landed in the stands in center field, and it just got worse from there.

Samardzija was knocked out in the fifth inning, and the White Sox lost, 12-3, to the New York Yankees on Sunday.

Alexei Ramirez and Geovany Soto homered for the Sox, who had won eight of 10. Melky Cabrera contributed an RBI single and an outstanding diving catch on Chris Young’s liner to left in the sixth.

But Samardzija’s rough outing was too much for the Sox to overcome. Samardzija (8-6) was tagged for nine runs, matching a season high, and eight hits in 42⁄3 innings.

Last week, we looked at responder’s redouble after partner opened one of a suit and the next player made a takeout double.

If the opening bid was one of a major, we learned that responder’s redouble denied four-card or longer support for that major. So, what does responder do with four or more trumps?

First, if he has a weak hand with below game-invitational values, he usually follows the Law of Total Tricks, jumping to the four-level with five-card support, or, as in today’s deal, bidding three of the suit with four trumps.

How weak North may be is a matter for partnership agreement and gastric fortitude!

South, with a promising hand, takes a shot at four spades, a bid not insured by Lloyd’s of London. How should he plan the play after West leads the heart king?

The South hand has six losers: two hearts, one diamond and three clubs.

Given that the club finesse is surely losing, declarer has only two side-suit winners and needs eight trump tricks.

He must play a crossruff.

South should win the first trick and immediately lead his diamond.

The defenders do best to cash two heart tricks before shifting to a trump, but it is to no avail. Declarer wins in the dummy, ruffs a diamond in his hand, cashes the club ace, and crossruffs home.

For the curious, confirm that a trump lead at trick one can defeat the contract.

In some cases, health conditions other than obesity influence which medication your doctor will prescribe. For example, a person with Type 2 diabetes might benefit from liraglutide (Saxenda). This injectable medication is also used to treat diabetes.

On the other hand, a person with a fast heartbeat shouldn’t take phentermine (Adipex-P, Ionamin). This drug can speed up the heart.

As a general rule, you must lose at least 5 percent of your weight within three months in order to keep taking a particular weight-loss drug. If you don’t, your doctor may prescribe a different drug, or a combination of two or more drugs.

Because weight-loss medicines have not proven dramatically effective, and because some new medicines have caused serious health problems, many doctors think it is a pipe dream to believe we will ever have a drug that safely and powerfully helps us to lose weight.

I’m more optimistic.

Scientific research in the past 20 years has made major advances in understanding the body chemistry that controls weight and appetite. It wouldn’t surprise me if that research leads to powerful and safe weight-loss drugs in the next 20 years. However, a healthy diet and regular exercise are always going to be important, too.

Should I be on a weightloss drug?

Dear Reader: You’re right that being obese can put a heavy burden on your heart. It boosts your heart attack risk by about 60 percent. Diet and exercise are always the first steps toward controlling excess weight and other heart disease risk factors. When lifestyle changes aren’t enough, doctors often prescribe medications, like statins for high cholesterol. But the medical options for weight loss are more limited.

What’s more, weightloss drugs are only moderately effective. On average, they help people lose about 5 percent of their body weight over a period of six to 12 months. But the response varies widely. Some people may lose a lot of weight on a particular drug. Others may lose little or none. And we don’t yet have the tools to determine who will do well on a particular drug and who won’t. So it’s trial and error.

You may be a good candidate for a weightloss medication if you have a body mass index (BMI) higher than 30, which is considered obese. (Go to www. health.harvard.edu/bmi to calculate your BMI.) You may also benefit if you have a BMI of 27 or higher along with health problems related to your weight. These include Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, high blood pressure or chronic joint pain. Finally, you may need weight-loss drugs if you are overweight and have been unable to lose weight despite eating a healthy diet and exercising regularly.

Dear Abby: I am a 22-year-old male and my brother, “Brian,” is 14.

When I was 9, our parents split up. After a year, Mom realized she was a lesbian.

She is married now to a younger woman, and they are starting a family through in vitro fertilization.

Mom’s wife is carrying twins – a boy and a girl.

When I first heard about their plans to conceive, I was devastated. After a few months, Mom and I were able to reconnect and talk about it. I’m happy they’re happy, but I’m still uncomfortable with the situation.

When the children are born, I am unsure how I will be known. Mom says Brian and I will have “a sister and a brother.”

Brian is excited that he will no longer be the youngest. But at my age, as a business owner and in a serious relationship, I prefer to consider Brian my sibling, not the twins.

I will love the babies because they are connected to me, but I’m leaning toward being called their uncle or cousin because the twins will not be my blood relations.

PUBLIC NOTICE ADVERTISEMENT TO BID WATER MAIN LINING PROGRAM 2015 VILLAGE OF ROMEOVILLE, ILLINOIS The Village of Romeoville will receive sealed Bids for the Water Main Lining Program 2015 until 10:00 A.M. on August 12, 2015 at 1050 W. Romeo Road, Romeoville, Illinois, 60446, at which time they will be publicly opened and read aloud.

The work includes the structural cast-in-place lining of water mains and other associated work necessary to complete the rehabilitation of water mains at various locations within the Village.

Bids are to be addressed to the Village of Romeoville, 1050 W. Romeo Road, Romeoville, Illinois, 60446, and shall be marked "Sealed Bid " Water Main Lining Program 2015."

Bidding Documents may be obtained from the Village of Romeoville Department of Public Works, 615 Anderson Drive, Romeoville, (815) 886-1870. Contact Person: Eric Bjork. Mailing or E-Mailing of Bidding Documents will not be provided.

All proposals must be accompanied by a proposal guaranty as provided in the Illinois Department of Transportation- Bureau of Local Roads and Streets Special Provision for Bidding Requirements and Conditions for Contract Proposals contained in the "Supplemental Specifications and Recurring Special Provisions."

Bidders will be required to be in compliance with the Prevailing Wage Act (820 ILCS 130), as amended, except where a prevailing wage violates a federal law, order, or ruling, the rate conforming to the federal law, order, or ruling shall govern. Bidders shall be responsible to notify each subcontractor of the wage rates set forth in this contract and any revisions thereto. If the Department of Labor revises the wage rates, the revised rate as provided by the public body shall apply to this contract and the Bidder will not be allowed additional compensation on account of said revisions.

The Village of Romeoville reserves the right to waive technicalities and to reject any or all proposals as provided in IDOT BLRS Special Provision for Bidding Requirements and Conditions for Contract Proposals contained in the "Supplemental Specifications and Recurring Special Provisions."
