Man charged with Crest Hill murder of woman

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com CREST HILL – Police have charged a man with strangling a 22-year-old woman to death Tuesday in a Crest Hill apartment.

Chief Dwayne Wilkerson said officers were called to do a welfare check at a residence in the 1800 block of Marlboro Lane but were unable Cesar Garcia to gain access.

holder to get inside and found a female who was cold to the touch ... and a male who appeared to be hallucinating and making erratic statements,” Wilkerson said.

Laura V. Gonzalez was pronounced dead at 11:38 p.m., according to the Will County Coroner’s Office. An autopsy performed Wednesday determined Gonzalez was strangled.

Wilkerson said the man found inside the apartment was hospitalized. Cesar Garcia, 27, was wearing a Presence hospital gown when he was booked at 7:39 a.m. Wednesday into the Will County Jail on a

charge of murder.

Deputy Police Chief Ed Clark said a concerned relative of Gonzalez called to ask for the welfare check about 9 p.m. Tuesday. Clark said the victim and suspect had been in a relationship.

On June 20, Garcia was arrested by Crest Hill police on two counts of domestic battery and was ordered not to have contact with Gonzalez or go within 1,000 feet of their residence for “grabbing [and] striking her about the body,” according to court records. He was released two days later on $5,000 bond.

Rialto board votes for marquee solution; officials await bids

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Most of the marquee rejected after a community backlash now will go on the back of the Rialto Square Theatre building.

The Rialto board voted Wednesday for a new solution to the theater’s marquee problem.

“I believe this proposal is the path forward to resolve the marquee issue,” board Chairman Dan Vera said while announcing the new plan.

Vera said the new plan, which includes upgrading the old marquee on the front of the theater, should be completed by the Rialto’s 90th anniversary celebration in May 2016.

The Rialto will modernize the existing marquee with LED lighting while maintaining its 1920s-era appearance.

But the theater will seek bids for the job rather than try to use LED panels from the newly built marquee in the old sign, which had been the previous plan.

Vera said that retrofit job would have been costly and there was a chance of uneven lighting and colors when it was done.

“I believe it’s a win-win for everybody, and it’s going to make us some money.”

Jan Quillman Joliet councilwoman The result is that the Rialto will spend about $217,000, according to theater officials, which was to go to the new marquee for a sign that will go on the back of the building facing Scott Street.

Rialto officials said they will find out when bids come in what it will cost to upgrade both the old marquee and the vertical sign that accompanies it, a project that was to be funded with a $350,000 donation that was given back when theater officials decided against moving forward with the new marquee.

That marquee already has been built by Landmark Sign Group, which will bolt the front face of the sign to the back of the building. The design faced community opposition from those who said it was too gaudy and too dramatic a change from the classic look of the existing mar-

quee.

The Rialto board eventually created a marquee committee, which recommended the theater modernize but keep the existing marquee while using part of the new sign on the back of the building.

The latest plan has the advantage of adding LED panels to the back-of-the-building sign. The panels can be used for a message board to sell advertising.

“I believe it’s a win-win for everybody, and it’s going to make us some money,” said Joliet Councilwoman Jan Quillman, who first suggested using part of the new sign on the back of the building.

While it may be the back of the theater, the Scott Street side actually has more exposure to traffic, said Rialto General Manager Randy Green.

Not only is there more automobile traffic on Scott Street than on Chicago Street, which passes the front of the Rialto, but the back of the building also faces Metra commuter rail lines, Green said.

With the upgrade of the old marquee also adding a message board, Green said, “It’s almost like we’re going to get into the advertising business now.”

LOCAL BRIEF Police: Frankfort teen was ecstasy dealer

FRANKFORT – Police said a teen was selling ecstasy and other narcotics before his arrest Tuesday.

Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad Director Mike Weber said Christian Lohmann, 18, was the subject of a shortterm investigation for allegedly selling ecstasy and MDMA in the Frankfort area and south suburbs.

“We obtained information to execute a search warrant about 4 p.m. at his home. He ran out the back door but was apprehended a short distance away after a foot pursuit,” Weber said.

Agents reportedly found nearly 2 ounces of powdered MDMA inside Lohmann’s residence in the 20000 block of Graceland Lane. Lohmann was arrested on a charge of drug trafficking and booked into the Will County Jail. He is being held on $250,000 bond.

Aug. 28, 1990.

Residents who saw the storm before it dropped its clouds reported seeing a mesmerizing blend of color paint the horizon as hot, humid weather turned to rain, which furled into large hail.

Plainfield Police Commander Kevin Greco – at that time a new patrol officer fresh out of the academy – was just about to leave the station, located on Route 59 near the railroad viaduct, when he noticed the storm coming in. He decided to wait.

He and the police chief at the time, Don Bennett, went to the back door of the station, and watched the storm approach.

The storm produced a tornado with winds up to 310 miles

an hour that ripped through much of Plainfield and parts of Crest Hill and Joliet. It killed 29 people – 24 instantly – injured 350, damaged 470 homes and destroyed another 1,000 homes, according to National Weather

The supercell storm that produced the tornado started in Wisconsin, according to the National Weather Service.

As it moved into Illinois, the storm created two quick tornadoes and golf ball-sized hail that caused minor damage about 1:42 p.m. in and near Pecatonica and Rockford.

The Plainfield tornado on Aug. 28, 1990, forever altered the village and its residents.

It killed 29 people and destroyed hundreds of homes.

But out of the destruction emerged a new Plainfield and the drive to prepare for the strong storms and tornadoes that have hit the Midwest since then.

In remembrance of the tornado 25 years later, The Herald-News interviewed several people who were witness to the destruction, aided in rescue efforts and lost loved ones.

JJC seeks more trustees following recent resignations

JOLIET – Joliet Junior College was the site for discussion Wednesday among national, state and local leaders on resolving the skills gap among workers.

Appearing on campus with U.S. Rep. Bill Foster, D-Naperville, was U.S. Deputy Secretary of Labor Christopher Lu. Both of them joined JJC officials, state elected officials and local business leaders for a roundtable discussion on ways to close the skill gap and increase employment.

Before the discussion, Lu said he talked with employers who are ready to hire but can’t find workers with the skills needed for the job. Likewise, there are workers looking for jobs but lack skills to obtain them.

“This is the challenge that we face at the Department of Labor,” Lu said. “My bosses characterize … our old workforce training system as ‘train and pray.’ We train people for jobs and pray they get them.

We need to change that model.”

Foster said if this discussion was taking place four years ago, it would have been more downbeat, referring to the economic crisis years ago.

“What we’re at least trying to do here is fill the skills gap,” he said.

Will County has become a “jobs engine” with thousands of new jobs across industries coming to the area in the past several years, said John Grueling, president and chief executive officer for the Will County Center for Economic and Development.

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Junior College’s Board of Trustees is searching for three people to join the board after two members abruptly resigned Tuesday.

With former Board Chairwoman Tina Markley and Trustee Barb Adams g o n e , o t h e r Tina Markley trustees need applicants to serve the rest of their terms, which end in 2019. They also need to find someone to fill Barb Adams in the seat of former Board Chairman Jeff May, whose term would have ended in 2017.

JJC officials will accept applications for those vacant seats until 5 p.m. Sept. 4.

Previously, trustees only had one vacancy to worry about when May resigned as board chair in July for health reasons. But Markley leveled several complaints against the board Tuesday and then resigned. Adams, who was elected to the board with Markley in 2013, also resigned and the two walked out of the board room.

Markley said there was a “backdoor attempt” at public humiliation because she rose from vice chairwoman to chairwoman following May’s resignation. She also

was upset no one contacted her about concerns over her ability to be chairwoman.

“I believe it was the best solution based on what occurred at the meeting on [Aug.] 11 and also for my own personal sanity,” Markley said Wednesday about her resignation. “I have a life outside of the college and it didn’t appear I would have the ability to change or work through issues. I thought it was in my interest to leave at that point.”

She said she had no idea why Adams resigned after her. Attempts to contact Adams on Wednesday were unsuccessful.

Markley said at an Aug. 11 board meeting there was a discussion about the duties of the chairperson and that conversation was “a direct implication that they were really seeking to remove me as chair.”

She referred to “individuals that spoke up” questioning the policy on board chair duties.

Trustees Maureen Broderick, Andy Mihelich and Robert Wunderlich discussed at the Aug. 11 meeting the interpretation of the board officer duties policy. Broderick said the language of the policy uses “shall” instead of “must,” meaning it is open to interpretation.

At the meeting, the board attorney disagreed with Broderick’s interpretation, saying the policy is clear the vice chairperson shall become board chair if the seat becomes vacant. He said any

other process would be a violation.

Although he thought the policy was clear, the attorney admitted when asked by Broderick it was his interpretation and the board can change policy. Mihelich and Wunderlich suggested seeking outside legal interpretation.

Wunderlich and Broderick said Wednesday trustees were only figuring out at the meeting how to reorganize the board after May’s resignation.

Broderick said it would have been better for Markley to ask the board if there were any concerns about her leadership or abilities than to quit. Broderick said Markley was a good person but said she was “saddened by the fact she chose to take the option she chose.”

When asked about Markley’s criticism that no board member contacted her about her ability to be chairwoman, Wunderlich said he had no idea. He said Markley had good intentions, but some of the trustees felt she was inexperienced.

JJC President Debra Daniels said in a statement that even though events that unfolded at Tuesday’s meeting were sudden and unexpected, she is confident trustees will find “committed and dynamic individuals” to fill the vacancies. Daniels was unable to be reached Wednesday as she was in meetings all day, JJC Spokeswoman Kelly Rohder said.

Will County businesses look for skilled workers

“Employers today are turning inward and doing their own training on-site,” Grueling said.

Pat Fera, Workforce Investment Board of Will County director, said her organization works with employers who routinely give input on what skills they’re looking for even though those needs are changing constantly.

She said the workforce board also works with JJC to help address the skills gap as well as job experience.

“JJC was amazing in doing some accelerated training,” she said.

Although many vocational training programs are aimed at people in their late teens and older, Greg Dover, GAD Group Technology president, said more focus on job training should be on early teens.

“The employer can work with the local school system to ensure the vocational program is on track but its got to start when the kids are 13, 14, 15,” Dover said. “When we get that person at 19 years old, they need to make some money, they’re not able to read on an 11th grade level yet, math skills are missing. The employer can’t take control or do that part.”

He said companies are focused on using their resources for profit and if they have to “do the education process over again, that’s going to be a losing battle.”

When it came to vocational training, Lu said other countries have a model that allows for people to receive a vocation education and return years later to receive more education in other fields if needed.

“We’re not as nimble in our system,” he said.

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com WILMINGTON – Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie officials are one step closer to reintroducing American bison as part of an experimental project to see how the herd’s grazing habits can benefit the area’s tallgrass prairie ecosystem and grassland bird habitat.

The bison likely won’t arrive until late fall. But officials unveiled during a media tour Wednesday the newly constructed bison handling facilities – including nine miles of exterior and interior fencing that encompasses 1,200 acres divided into four distinct pastures, a corral area and a yearround watering source.

The infrastructure improvements will safely house the bison and allow Midewin staff to monitor the small herd – estimated to be between 30 and 35 bison – for disease and provide annual vaccinations.

Native bison once were common to Illinois. Since the Wilmington-area prairie – managed by the U.S. Forest Service – was first established in 1996, the plan has been to reintroduce bison, Restoration Team Leader Renee Thakali said.

“When Midewin was first getting established, there were a lot of folks from a lot of different communities and interest groups that were thinking, ‘Wow, this is going to be a really big area. This is Illinois bringing back prairie. Why not bring back bison?’ ” Thakali said. “It was an exciting idea early, early on.”

The bison project was proposed in 2012 and is being executed with the National Forest Foundation and other groups.

Bill Glass, an ecologist for the U.S. Forest Service, said grazing cattle have been used to manage the grassland habitat since Midewin was first established. But bison and cattle grazing habits are starkly different in that bison graze only on certain plants.

“We are hoping the bison can help us increase the diversity of our plantings out here.

It’s been shown in other areas where, if you are restoring prairie and you reintroduce bi-

son in the area, they can help you increase the diversity,” Glass said.

The 20-year experiment will provide data on how bison improve the diversity of the native vegetation compared to similar prairie restoration sites without bison.

The corral – constructed with materials from Berlinic MFG, a Canada-based company that specializes in bison-handling equipment – is

designed so that the bison will be funneled gradually through a fenced-in area. Its angles and narrowing walkways provide a low-stress environment for the bison as they approach the squeeze chute, said Kelly Gutknecht, range management specialist.

Organizers are close to determining which entity will give the bison to the National Forest Foundation, said Greg Peters, foundation spokesman.

The goal is to find bison that are as genetically pure as possible, versus bison that have been crossbred with cattle, he said.

Peters said he’s excited for the bison’s arrival.

“We’re optimistic that the bison will be a draw for people to come here from greater Chicago. One of our hopes in this effort is that it will raise the profile of Midewin,” Peters said.

Visitors will get a first look at the animals this spring, he said.

The foundation launched a crowd-funding campaign earlier this year to raise $17,000 to install a live-streaming webcam at the prairie so viewers can see the bison roaming near the corral and watering hole.

Joliet prison task force stymied

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Collins Street Task Force has some plans for the old Joliet Correctional Center but can’t get very far without some help from Springfield.

And, they’re not getting much, task force members said at one of their quarterly meetings Wednesday.

State Sen. Patrick McGuire, D-Joliet, started off the meeting with some bad news from the state’s capital.

McGuire said he checked with a governor’s representative on a possible prison tour for a group from Pennsylvania with experience converting an old prison into a tourist attraction. The answer, McGuire said was, “Not without a budget.”

Other efforts needed to make progress on the prison also have been stymied with the governor’s office response that nothing will be done until the state has a budget.

“This moratorium on the state’s cooperation will not end our work,” McGuire told the

task force.

He added that he believes that he believes the local task force is making progress by getting environmental assessments that will be needed to eventually convert the prison.

But the situation is frustrating, said Greg Peerbolte, executive director for the Joliet Area Historical Museum.

Peerbolte has been talking with the group from the Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia that wants to tour the Joliet prison. He said the tour will go on in some fashion with or without the state’s cooperation.

“One way or another, they’re coming down. We’ll walk around until someone throws us out,” Peerbolte said.

Peerbolte said there is much interest among travelers in the prison, which is famous in both song and story as the legendary destination of Chicago bad guys. Many out-of-town visitors want to get into the prison, and Peerbolte wants the museum to conduct walking tours there.

As to when that might hap-

pen, he does not know.

Local donors have offered to contribute money that could be used to board up an administration building and keep out vandals who have been tearing it up, Peerbolte said. But the state won’t let them in.

“I have people willing to give us money. But we can’t even get in there to spend our own money,” he said.

The task force appeared undaunted, however, and did get some good news.

Genell Scheurell, a senior field officer with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, said the agency has a National Treasures program that could help market the prison for eventual redevelopment.

“I would love to see the penitentiary become a National Treasure,” Scheurell told the task force.

People at the National Trust office in Washington, D.C., have been impressed with what they’ve heard about the Joliet prison, she said. Some, she added, would love to take a tour.

Joliet bank robbed JOLIET – Investigators believe one of the men who robbed a Joliet bank Tuesday afternoon is connected to another recent robbery.

FBI Agent Joan Hyde said shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday two men entered Chase Bank, 1421 Route 59 in Joliet, and one approached a teller.

A surveillance photo show he was wearing a black ballcap and a striped Polo shirt and carrying a camouflage

backpack.

“A weapon was threatened but not displayed,” Hyde said. No one was injured.

Anyone with information is asked to call the FBI at 312421-6700.

Investigators believe the robber who went to the counter is the same man who robbed a bank two weeks ago in Bolingbrook.

At 9:13 a.m. Aug. 17, a man wearing sunglasses robbed West Suburban Bank, 672 E. Boughton Road. The suspect, who claimed he was armed,

was described as a black man in his 20s wearing a red floppy hat and black shirt.

Tuesday’s incident was Joliet’s second bank robbery this year. On July 6, a black man in his 40s or 50s implied he was armed while robbing First Midwest Bank, 2801 W. Jefferson St. That suspect also remains at large but is believed to be the same man who robbed Fifth-Third Bank, 6131 N. Lincoln Ave. in Chicago on June 26, according to the FBI.

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – N.B. Galloway Elementary School has a new principal – just in time for the start of the school year.

Mary Kelly began the position last month in the Channahon District 17 school and was officially hired this week at Monday’s school board meeting at a salary of $75,055.

Kelly came from the Plainfield District 202 School District, where she taught third grade for 11 years. She said she was raised in Chicago, but has family in Morris and is happy to be in the area and at the school.

“I am excited to be here,” she said Monday. “Everyone was just incredibly welcoming.

I just felt this was the place I was meant to be.”

Superintendent Nicholas Henkle said he has seen an immediate positive relationship between her and the staff and

students.

“It’s really been a good fit,” he said.

Kelly replaces Angela Stallion, who resigned over the summer to accept a principal position at The Lane School, a Hinsdale K-5 school.

In other personnel matters, the district also hired Amanda Cappel as a new sixth-grade teacher, Mary Doody as a reading specialist and Cassie Martin as a response to intervention and language arts teacher.

Resignations were accepted for fourth-grade teacher Kelsey Nichols, RTI aide Angela Petrakis and cafeteria server Sherri Mason.

The school board also approved the district’s fiscal year 2016 budget. Revenues are likely to be 0.7 percent down from last year, expected to come in at $20.27 million, with expenditures totaling an estimated $19.38 million.

The two big expenditures of the year will be a technology

upgrade of re-wiring all four schools and installation of a new HVAC system in Three Rivers School. New low-voltage wiring will cost $253,000, and the HVAC will cost $90,000.

Those projects, together with architectural designs for the cafeteria/multi-purpose room at N.B. Galloway, will raise the Operations and Maintenance Fund expenditures 21.2 percent, according to Finance Director Michael Schroeder.

The IMRF fund expenditures will decrease by 6.4 percent after the board instituted unfunded liability measures earlier this year. Transportation expenses will be less this year, as the district bought four new buses last year, but will purchase only two new ones this year.

Debt services expenditures also will decrease this year after the district makes its last payment on the bonds that were used to build Channahon Junior High School in 2001.

New Minooka establishment awaits liquor license approval

By KRIS STADALSKY Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – If the owners of a new business in Minooka pass proper background checks, they will be approved for a Class C liquor license and then be eligible for a video gaming permit through the state.

Minooka trustees voted, 6-0, Tuesday to increase the number of Class C liquor licenses, which allow the sale of beer and wine only, for Clover’s on Mondamin Street in downtown Minooka.

The license does not allow package liquor sales or live entertainment.

A local liquor license is required by state law to have video gaming on the premises, Minooka Mayor Pat Brennan said. The gaming license is handled through the state.

That brings the number of gaming establishments in Mi-

nooka to seven.

While the other establishments can cook and serve food, Clover’s has opted just to have gaming and the liquor license.

Knights of Columbus street collection approved

In a 5-1 vote, trustees approved a request from the Knights of Columbus to solicit donations at the intersection of Mondamin Street and Ridge Road on Sept. 19.

Trustee Terry Houchens voted against the request as he has done in years past, but this time without comment during the meeting.

Afterward, Houchens said he’s tired of beating his head against the wall and decided not to speak out, leaving his vote to speak for him.

“Everybody knows the reason,” Houchens said. “We keep approving [donation] solicitations at our busiest intersection

with the highest accident rate.”

Although it has reduced their revenue, Minooka Lions Club no longer collects donations at that spot because of the safety factor, member Jerry Davidson said following the board meeting.

In other business, the board:

• Awarded Davis Concrete Construction Company the 2015 village sidewalk improvement project at a cost of $36,778.05 • Approved an extension of the snow removal contract with D.E. “Even more troubling is that a cursory review of this 24page list shows that the trustee could not have had any idea what CenterPoint was spending Elwood’s money on,” the filing stated.

“The documents showed that the $110 million dollars in TIF notes … were issued without CenterPoint presenting a single invoice, contract, or other historical document showing that the money had actually been spent, that it had been spent on the Elwood project, or what work the money had been spent on,” the filing stated.

CenterPoint spokeswoman Jacque Engle did not respond Wednesday to email and phone requests for comment.

ELWOOD – A 2013 lawsuit between the village of Elwood and CenterPoint Properties could come before a Cook County Circuit Court judge within the coming months.

In a court filing this week, the village is arguing against the Oak Brook-based developers’ July motion to dismiss allegations that CenterPoint illegally destroyed critical documents and overbilled in its spending of $110 million in tax increment financing subsidies.

At the root of Elwood’s lawsuit is a Tax Increment Financing agreement reached in 2000 after the village annexed a portion of the former Joliet Arsenal and designated it a TIF district for development of the intermodal.

Elwood brought forth the lawsuit in 2013 after alleging CenterPoint refused to turn over documents revealing how taxpayer money was spent to help redevelop a billion-dollar intermodal transportation hub and business park.

Jonah Orlofsky, attorney for Elwood, said Elwood is alleging CenterPoint sought excessive reimbursement from the village. While documents show CenterPoint had a deal with BNSF that the railroad pay 75 percent of the costs relating to an intermodal project, Orlofsky said CenterPoint sought 100 percent reimbursement from the village.

DON RANDICH Former firefighter and mayor of Crest Hill

Don Randich was mayor of Crest Hill when the tornado hit.

It destroyed the Crest Hill Lakes apartment complex and killed nine people there. But he remembers the day through the lens of a Lockport Township firefighter. He was one of the first responders on the scene to witness the destruction, help the injured and mourn those lost.

Over the years, Paul Likes said he refused to publicly talk about the day he lost his brother, Charles, to the 1990 tornado. But in his interview, he recounts that day when the sudden change of air pressure and temperature near the tornado hit his car, fogging up the windows. He explains how he dealt with the emotional and physical aftermath of the tornado, and his efforts to help by landscaping the Plainfield Tornado Memorial monument.

Kevin Greco was a relatively new patrol officer just getting off his shift when the skyscape started turning green. Right after the storm, he was tasked with checking out downtown Plainfield. But a resident pointed him south to James Street, where he saw the true power of the tornado.

A cold front moved the storm as it swallowed the warm, humid air. And the dew point – the temperature at which water vapor condenses – approached 80 degrees, making the storm more unstable.

After the storm destroyed parts of an airport in Aurora, the Plainfield tornado started forming near Oswego and touched down about 3:30 p.m. in the Wheatland Plains subdivision.

The rain-wrapped tornado then traveled 16.4 miles in eight minutes, spanning 200 yards to a half mile in width and swallowing Plainfield High School and St. Mary Immaculate Parish church in its path.

Tetsuya Fujita, the founder of the original Fujita tornado-rating scale, himself gave the tornado the highest rating on the scale, an F5, due to the combination of size, speed and destruction.

F5 tornadoes – less than 0.1 percent of all tornadoes – have wind speeds in excess of 261 miles an hour, an average damage path of 0.68 miles and destructive damage.

As the storm passed Route 59, Renwick Road and Interstate 55, it leveled the Lily Cache, Peerless and Crystal Lawns subdivisions. It entered Crest Hill, demolishing Crest Hill Lakes apartments and instantly killing eight people, before diminishing and dissipating in Joliet.

The National Weather Service issued its first tornado warning 13 minutes after the tornado hit Crest Hill.

Witness to destruction

Paul Likes was a recent college graduate doing landscape work in Bolingbrook that day.

He was let out early because of the bad weather.

He was crossing into Plainfield down Route 59 when the skies turned black.

“It was so deathly humid and hot, that my windows

“It looked like a bomb went off.”

Paul Likes Plainfield resident who witnessed the destruction of the 1990 tornado were foggy,” Likes said. “Even though it was that hot I had my defrosters on full blast with my head out the window, I could hardly see. Then all of a sudden – boom, the temperature drops 30 to 40 degrees and I’m freezing.”

As he neared his home by the corner of Main and Lockport streets, taking time to drive around downed wires and debris on the road, he saw the totality of the destruction.

“It looked like a bomb went off,” Likes said.

An hour later he made it to his family’s house in Joliet.

His mother had a bad “premonition” about Likes’ eldest brother Charlie and asked Paul to look for him.

the 29 people who were killed.

He was found near his home in the Crystal Lawns subdivision in Joliet, one of the two who died there.

Southwest of Likes’ apartment, Dawn Kelly was in her home fixing dinner when she saw a large, dark green cloud with white caps at the top in the horizon. She called her fifth- and sixth-grade children, who were on the second floor, to come down to the basement.

As Kelly ushered them downstairs, she heard the tornado loom over the home. The winds pushed a cabinet onto the basement door, shutting it and pushing Kelly down the stairs.

“By the time I hit the base-

ment floor, it was done,” she said.

Further along the path, three people died at what was the now unrecognizable Plainfield High School.

About 100 members of the football and volleyball teams were on the practice fields outside the high school when the storm hit, according to Herald-News reports. They were corralled inside the building just as the tornado started ripping away the walls.

Three also died at St. Mary’s Immaculate Parish church, which was left with half a roof.

Parishioners who remain at the church 25 years later remember how the nearly 300-mile-an-hour winds churned the base of the church’s steeple cross, ominously pushing the cross upside down.

But there were signs of hope too: A statue of the Virgin Mary was left untouched.

The Egizio family lost more members to the tornado than any other. They were three of eight people who were immediately killed at the Crest Hill Lakes apartment complex.

Don Randich, who at the time was Crest Hill’s mayor and a Lockport Township firefighter, was one of the first emergency personnel on the scene at Crest Hill Lakes.

“Two of us got on the engine and we went to the scene,” Randich said, noting that damage also was apparent at nearby Cedarwood Drive, where two died. “All I said, reporting to dispatch, ‘We’re on the scene. We’ve got two devastations.’ ” Randich remembers the Egizios, with emergency responders first attending to

Leslie, then Thomas, and their mother last.

“All three passed away, but that was reality,” Randich said.

During the immediate aftermath of the tornado, Randich said he was just focused on helping with relief efforts.

“In all honesty, my being mayor came secondly to being a firefighter,” he said.

“Somehow you get the energy. The next day I sat down with a knife and a fork was Saturday.”

But in the weeks and months after the tornado, Randich said his main goal as a public official was to make sure his people were taken care of. At one point, when the Illinois attorney general was looking for a local office while aiding tornado victims, Randich offered his

After the storm passed, Greco suited up again and was tasked with checking the downtown area. He was driving down Fox River Street at Chicago Street when he noticed a large downed tree blocking the road.

When he got out, a local resident flagged him down and told him the real damage was on James Street. The street was unrecognizable, with house after house demolished.

“I was totally bewildered,” Greco said. “I just couldn’t figure it out because James Street was gone.”

While Greco was on the scene near the DuPage River, he was in radio contact with a few other officers who described the damage at the church and other areas. His first instinct from training was to radio Illinois State Police to request backup. But the state police told him they were already responding to

damage along Interstate 55.

“I remember I got off the radio and I went, ‘Well, nobody covered that in the academy,’ ” Greco said.

By 4 p.m., Greco said he and Bennett requested help from police and firefighters from other municipalities.

“At that time we didn’t train for disasters or anything like that,” said Greco, who started helping people on James

Street and at the high school, looking for the deceased and sending the injured to a triage at the fire station.

“We could not do it if it were not for all the outside help we received,” Greco said. “Not only that day, but weeks afterward.”

Ambulances from Saint Joseph Medical Center started pulling up to the scenes of the major points of de-

struction about 75 minutes after the tornado touched down, according to Herald-News reports. The hospital developed a traffic jam near the trauma entrance on Glenwood Avenue in Joliet.

In the next several days and weeks, it took a community, county and statewide effort to address the debris and emotional damage caused by the tornado.

The United Way of Will County helped organize relief funds for the victims, President and CEO Mike Hennessy said.

By Aug. 23, 1991, United Way, in coordination with other organizations, raised more than $2.5 million. The Salvation Army and Catholic Charities set up relief distribution centers in northern Plainfield and Joliet.

Hennessy said the goal was to prevent victims from going through any red tape, and to fill in the gaps between federal aid funding.

The rebuilding process took years.

But out of the rubble emerged a new Plainfield.

CREST HILL – When people ask Crest Hill resident Jim Egizio about the scar on his knee, he doesn’t hesitate from telling them about the day the 1990 Plainfield tornado changed his life.

The scar is from surgery to repair the multiple fractures in his left leg and thigh, where his femur pierced through his skin.

He found himself in that state Tuesday, Aug. 28, 1990, when he, then a 12-year-old seventh-grader at Holy Family School in Shorewood, woke up lying near his 4-year-old sister, Leslie, in the cornfields 500 feet from his family’s home at the Crest Hill Lakes apartment complex.

“She was still living,” Egizio said. “I couldn’t get to her but I tried hobbling over.”

Moments before, Egizio remembers watching his older brother, 14-year-old Thomas, enter the family’s home when the tornado struck the house.

“Next thing I know I’m in the cornfields,” he said. “I was just yelling for help.”

Both of Egizio’s siblings died, as did their mother Vicki, a 38-year-old nurse.

While the 1990 tornado often is synonymous as the single most-defining event for Plainfield, Crest Hill and Joliet also saw heavy damage.

Randich said the emergency response and aid was still good in Crest Hill and Joliet, despite the cities not attracting as much attention as Plainfield.

On Cedarwood Drive, elderly couple Frank and Alida Riffel were killed as they were driving their two grandchildren back from a day of swimming. Both grandchildren survived.

The tornado weakened in Joliet, but still killed three people: 30-year-old Alice Jean Johnson, 41-year-old Thomas Thayer and Phoumy Senephimmachac, 36.

The Bridalwreath neighborhood didn’t suffer any loss of life, but it did see much loss of property.

Egizio was raised by his father after the tornado. He often wonders what life would have been like growing up with his mother, brother and sister, but he said he has made peace with what happened, and accepts it.

Egizio has since graduated from college, started a family with a wife and two boys, and is an industrial arts teacher at Romeoville High School. He said he relates to victims of other tornadoes who have lost loved ones. He stressed that every life counts.

“People can say I lost my whole family in the tornado,” Egizio said. “But you could say a man [with no children] who lost his wife also lost his whole family. Is my loss any greater than his?”

OBITUARIES VIOLET R. BIRO Violet Rose Biro (nee Paluzzi) Age 95. Peacefully Tuesday, August 25, 2015, at the Parc of Joliet.

Born in Joliet, the daughter of the late Arcangelo and Amelia (Metro) Paluzzi on July 1, 1920, she was a lifelong resident.

Violet was strong in her catholic faith and member of the Church of St. Anthony.

She enjoyed preparing meals for the clergy at St. Mary Carmelite Catholic Church. Proud of her Italian heritage as well as her family, she had many fond memories of her life in Joliet. Her family is very thankful that she shared her love and skill of cooking that will be handed down to present and future generations.

Survived by her two sons, John (Amy) Biro of Oak Creek, WI and Jeffrey (Elizabeth) Biro of Mesa, AZ.; four granddaughters, Cristina (John) Benson, Jessica (Kale) Martin, Emily (Jeff) Feliton and Sarah Biro; two great-grandchildren, Katie and Jack Benson; mother-in-law of Jae (the late James R.) Mary Jane received an Associates degree from Joliet Junior College and a bachelor degree from the University of St. Francis. She enjoyed a fulfilling career as an area educator, spanning over 50 years, with 40 of those years at Elwood Community School District and a decade at St. Joseph Catholic grade school in downtown Joliet.

Survived by her son, Dennis (Sherry) Burns; daughter, Jane Marie (Thomas) Wojcik; sisters-inlaw, Ann Burns and Arminta Burns; brother-in-law Thomas Tyler; two nieces, Kathy, nee Rowan (late Wendell) Brockett and Jayne, nee Rowan (John) Ballun; one nephew, Thomas (Jackie) Tyler, Jr. Mary Jane was also the loving grandmother of Tom, Jillian, Ally, Stephanie and Brennan whom she adored immensely.

Nancy L. Carder (nee Trevena), age 73, of Glenview, IL and formerly Joliet, IL, passed Thursday, August 20, 2015, at Highland Park Hospital with her family by her side.

Born October 28, 1941, to the late Norma (nee Lee) and Thomas Trevena in Joliet where she was raised and educated, a graduate of Joliet Central High School and Silver Cross Hospital School of Nursing.

Nancy was an honorably discharged U.S. Army Veteran. She retired from the Army Nurse Corps as a Lieutenant Colonel serving in Desert Storm, Grenada and Panama.

She was a member of the 801st Combat Support Hospital stationed at Ft. Sheridan, Illinois. She was a member of Evanston American Legion Post #42 and served as past commander for many years. Also served as past 7th District Commander of the American Legion. A member of Voiture 220 of the 40 and 8 Honor Society of the American Legion. She was employed for many years as a compassionate Registered Nurse specializing in trauma nursing.

She found peace, tranquility and enjoyment in the art and practice of quilting and sewing.

U.S. judge blasts Illinois for not making all ordered payments

At Illinois, the contracts for just four of the administrators will cost the public university $1.3 million next school year. But given likely funding cuts as the state deals with a huge budget deficit, University President Timothy Killeen told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the school needs to study potential changes in future contracts.

“We are rethinking our overall administrative cost structure in the context of the state’s fiscal situation and in the spirit of our commitment to making continuous improvements in effectiveness and efficiency without compromising excellence,” he said in an email. “Contractual terms and obligations for key administrators, including provision of incentives and separation aspects, will all be part of this analysis.”

Killeen’s own contract, approved this year, guarantees him a job as a tenured professor of electrical and computer engineering at a salary equal to the average of the 10 highest in the university, excluding medical and dentistry professors.

Wise’s resignation came after the university revealed more than 1,000 pages of emails in which she and others used personal email accounts to discuss university business. While that’s permitted, those emails were not provided in response to subsequent public requests for such emails made under the Freedom of Information Act.

She was a lifetime parishioner at St. Anne Catholic Church in Crest Hill, a member of the Croatian

Cultural Club and the St. Anne C.C.W. She loved spending time with her family and friends and decorating for and celebrating the holidays. She will be truly missed.

Schock turns over financial records to government

SPRINGFIELD – Former U.S. Rep. Aaron Schock has surrendered more than 10,000 financial records to the U.S. government to comply with a subpoena.

Schock’s lawyers argue in the filing Wednesday that U.S. District Judge Sue Myerscough should dismiss a prosecutor’s motion seeking to hold Shock in contempt for not complying with the subpoena.

It says the surrendered records relate to campaign and political entities. The filing also says Schock’s lawyers are offering Myerscough a chance to review nearly 3,000 other records that may contain references to financial transactions.

The Chicago Tribune reported a hearing is planned Friday on the issue.

Mumps outbreak at U of Illinois continues to grow

CHAMPAIGN – An outbreak of mumps at the University of Illinois continues to grow with what officials said are almost 100 cases.

Champaign-Urbana Public Health District Administrator Julie Pryde told The News-Gazette on Tuesday that 98 cases were confirmed. But she said more are likely with a number of lab tests taken from sick students awaiting confirmation.

Fall classes started this week at the Urbana-Champaign campus.

University health officials are offering free vaccination clinics for students this week.

Obama Foundation begins search for library architect

CHICAGO – President Barack Obama’s foundation has started the process of choosing an architect to design his presidential library.

The foundation said Wednesday it has invited firms to submit their qualifications to design the Obama Presidential Center, which will be located in one of two sites on Chicago’s South Side.

The center will house Obama’s presidential archives and an interactive museum about his presidency.

The foundation said it also envisions that the center will include space for community gardening, sports, “healthy dining” and research.

Obama and the first lady will choose finalists later this year.

The center is expected to be finished in 2020 or 2021.

CHICAGO – A federal judge in Chicago scolded Illinois officials Wednesday for not fully complying with her order to pay social service providers in answer to a consent decree.

U.S. District Judge Sharon Johnson Coleman broached the subject of holding the state in contempt of court. She ultimately ordered the Illinois state comptroller’s office to determine within 48 hours which providers of service to developmentally disabled residents must be funded despite an ongoing budget impasse.

Also in Chicago on Wednesday, the state Department of Human Services held a hearing on proposed rules affecting people who receive public assistance.

Coleman even wants a list of what other payments the comptroller has made, suggesting further action if money went out the door for purposes other than necessary consent-decree obligations.

Without a budget for the fiscal year that began July 1, there is no state spending authority, but billions of dollars have been obligated. That’s because of federal court orders, such as the one agreed to in 2011 that covers more than 10,000 developmentally disabled people needing day-to-day help in community

The soft, lucrative landings into positions that often come with salaries of $200,000 a year or more are guaranteed by contracts commonly given to high-level administrators at many schools. Some experts say they’re necessary to persuade qualified people to take jobs that – as the University of Illinois demonstrates – can be demanding and end badly.

“That is a product of the marketplace,” said Jack Schuster, a professor of education and public policy at Claremont Graduate University in California.

“The about-to-be appointed chief executive officer of a campus, understanding the risks he or she will be taking on in any kind of volatile situation, finds [it] as a necessary inducement to take that risk.”

Other schools provide similar deals. Colorado State University President Tony Frank can leave his job and become a faculty member at $208,000 a year. And at California State University, a

homes or larger facilities.

Coleman had earlier ordered the comptroller to pay the community living providers by Aug. 18. But when the money didn’t arrive, the providers went back for Wednesday’s hearing. An attorney for the comptroller’s office, John Stevens, said the problem is cash flow.

While tax revenue continues to come in to the state, it’s not regular enough to cover all the bills.

Coleman said she understands the state’s spending plight, but said the state shouldn’t “flout” a court order. She added, “We have human lives at stake.”

That man, authorities said, was Flanagan – a former staffer who used the onair name of Bryce Williams and was fired by WDBJ, a man who always was looking for reasons to take offense, colleagues recalled. He fled the scene but then posted his own 56-second video of the murders on Twitter and Facebook. He later ran off a highway while being pursued hundreds of miles away and was captured; he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Wednesday’s on-air murders reverberated far from central Virginia because that’s just what the killer wanted – not just to avenge perceived wrongs, but to gain maximum, viral exposure. He

Flanagan’s planning may have started weeks ago when, ABC News said, a man claiming to be Bryce Williams called repeatedly, saying he wanted to pitch a story and needed fax information. He sent ABC’s newsroom a 23page fax two hours after the 6:45 a.m. shooting that was part-manifesto, part-suicide note – calling himself a gay black man who had been mistreated by people of all races, and saying he bought the gun two days after nine black people were killed in a June 17 shooting at a Charleston church. The fax also included admiration for the gunmen in mass killings at places like Virginia Tech and Columbine High School in Colorado.

He described himself as a “human powder keg,” that was “just waiting to go BOOM!!!!”

Parker and Ward were a regular team, provid-

ing stories for the station’s “Mornin’ ” show on everything from breaking news to feature stories on subjects like child abuse. Their live spot Wednesday was nothing out of the ordinary: They were interviewing a local official at an outdoor shopping mall for a tourism story before the shots rang out.

As Parker screamed and Ward collapsed, Ward’s camera kept rolling, capturing the image of the suspect pointing the gun. WDBJ quickly switched to the anchor back at the station, clearly shocked, who told viewers, “OK, not sure what happened there.”

Parker and Ward died at the scene. Their interview subject, Vicki Gardner, also was shot, but emerged from surgery later Wednesday in stable condition.

Flanagan, 41, who was fired from WDBJ in 2013, was described by the station’s president and general manager, Jeffrey Marks, as an “an unhappy man” and “difficult to work with,” always “looking out for people to say things he could take offense to.”

To the Editor: Throughout Asia, Africa and the Middle East young people are alienated and are on the move in search of a better future and to bring changes that recognize them as viable productive persons in search of meaning and dignity. Sixty million people are homeless; 192,000 crossed the Mediterranean and reached Europe; 2,000 drowned.

A Tunisian intellectual and writer, Fathi Ben Haj Yabia, attributed the alienation of youth to “their disaffection to a broken education system and a lack of opportunity that

leaves a young man sitting at home ‘feeling like an insect.’ ” Like in Kafka’s Metamorphosis masses of people are treated as superfluous automatons that are asked to work for subsistence wages, to be loyal to their superiors and suffer in silence.

To bring change to the global system and make it more sensitive to the needs, hopes and aspirations of humankind the forces shaping the political economics of the world must be understood. Since the 1970s the global financial institutions, multinational corporations and other elites have successfully instituted the neoliberal economic agenda which

advocates no new taxes on the so called job creators, no regulations that hinder them from maximizing their profits and the privatization of the public sector.

The above is having a disastrous global impact that results in the concentration of wealth in fewer and fewer hands and the immiseration of the majority of humankind. Neoliberalism has no heart. It’s nostroms must be peacefully challenged by a world movement that offers hope and a future to those alienated youth sitting at home “feeling like an insect.”

New York City has spots – like the Bronx – where there have been more abortions than live births among certain populations. It has even been dubbed the abortion capital of the United States. In a series of undercover videos released by the Center for Medical Progress that cover Planned Parenthood and the harvest-

ing of fetal tissue, New York is seen as a boon industry for abortions and thus for anyone looking for this kind of specimen.

Everyone from Hillary Clinton – Planned Parenthood Margaret Sanger Award honoree of years past – on down is disturbed by what is revealed on these videos.

And as each video seems to get worse, fatigue can set in.

What can any individual do about it? Supporting abortion alternatives like Avail is one way to help.

“We can’t treat women like this. We can’t treat life like this,” Bishai says, when asked to comment on the Planned Parenthood videos. Her heart gets heavy as she reflects on the “callousness” of some of the conversations depicted in the videos.

“Women are at their most vulnerable” when they are facing an unintended pregnancy and ask for help, says Bishai. Avail is also a “safe place” for women to get “hope

and healing” after an abortion. Many women have “deep regret and remorse” after the “deep trauma” of abortion.

Bishai wants them to know they are not alone. If they want help, it exists.

“Please help us reach more women in New York City,” Bishai says.

Women are facing “heavy, complicated” situations. Let’s quit pressuring them. Let’s quit burdening them with miserable political debates.

Porters rally past Indians in opener

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Coaches of the boys soccer teams from Lockport and Minooka probably are hoping that their seasons mirror Wednesday’s season opener between the schools.

Things didn’t start out particularly well for either the Porters and Indians, but they improved as the match went on and by the end, both sides were showing some positive signs.

Minooka struck first but Lockport responded to the challenge by scoring twice to take the lead and then held off a late challenge as it captured a 2-1 nonconference home victory.

It was a good start for a Porters squad that graduated 10 seniors from a record-setting season in which they won 17 matches, advanced to the sectional final and captured a second-straight undefeated SouthWest Suburban Conference Blue campaign.

“The beginning of the season is always challenging,” Porters coach Chris Beal said. “It usually takes awhile to get people in the right position and find out the intensity of play.

You can practice all day long against each other, but sometimes you’re not ready for the speed of play. But once we found our rhythm in the second half, we started to play a lot better.

“We’re not a team that’s going to out-muscle or beat other teams with pace, our objective is to control the ball. I think that the desire and hunger is there. They’ve seen what the last couple of years have brought to this program, and they want to live up to the expectations. We have a nice central midfield so I’m kind of excited and we’ll see how things go.”

The Porters (1-0) got the winner in the 65th minute after keeper Jacob Krawczyk sent a long kick forward to Jose Magallanes, who flicked the ball to David Villa, who then chipped an attempt over Indians keeper Noah Jawdat to conclude the scoring.

Slammers use big third to beat Schaumburg

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – One good thing seemed to lead to another during a productive third inning for the Joliet Slammers on Wednesday.

The Slammers scored five runs on six hits and took advantage of an error to establish control in their Frontier

League game against Schaumburg.

That outburst proved to be the difference as Joliet went on to capture a 7-3 victory in the middle game of their midweek series.

After Joliet’s decisive third frame, it already had collected 10 hits. It wound up with 14 hits on the evening.

Five Slammers finished

with multiple hits while three finished with two RBIs. In the third inning, Alfredo Rodriguez (3 for 5) started things with a single and Jeremy Nowak so singled and the pair advanced on an error.

Mike Garza (2 for 5) followed with a two-run single.

After Garza moved to second on a wild pitch, he came home on Joe Staley’s single,

The cool weather this week has made it feel like football season.

Let the games begin.

Opening night for the Illinois high school season is Friday, and all our area schools will be in action except Bolingbrook, which will wait until Saturday afternoon to visit mighty Glenbard West.

To help get you ready for the season, we on this page present our preseason area rankings. As promised in this column last week, Lincoln-Way East, defending Class 7A state champion Providence, Joliet Catholic and Lincoln-Way West would be in the top four spots in some order among large schools. That, in fact, is the order of our top four.

We round out the top 10 large schools with Bolingbrook, Plainfield North, Lemont, Joliet West, Morris and Lincoln-Way Central.

But don’t think for a minute that Minooka, Plainfield East, Lockport and Plainfield South are not capable of crashing the top 10 sometime along the way.

Of the 14 schools mentioned so far, as many as 11 or 12 could be in the postseason playoffs. From this vantage point, the only real surprises, playoff-wise, would be if Romeoville, Plainfield Central or Joliet Central qualifies.

What a story that will be if any of them earns a postseason berth.

As for small schools in the area, defending state champion Wilmington and Coal City, as usual, pencil in as the best and may not be challenged – at least not for a while – for one of the top two spots in those rankings.

No doubt you have disagreements with which teams we have ranked and/ or the order we have ranked them. And there’s no doubt we will have misfired on at least some area teams, either ranking them too high or too low, or not ranking them at

opponent victories will be the deciding factor. If you are 5-4 and played a difficult enough schedule, you will get in.

The schedule is interesting beginning with Week 1. It’s not enough to say, “It’s only Week 1. If we don’t win, we’ll come back and get them next week.” With the playoff setup, you will need that Week 1 victory as much as you need any other win you can muster.

Take the JCA at Providence opener Friday night.

The loser will be 0-1. That’s no big deal, perhaps, to two teams that fully expect to be in the playoffs every year.

However, with the tough schedules they play, they may look back later in the season and realize life would have been more comfortable had they won the opener.

By DENNIS NELSON Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – Plainfield East has identified the enemy – it’s the Bengals.

That’s because East has made the Class 7A football playoffs the past two seasons. Only twice in District 202 history has a school reached the state playoffs three straight seasons.

It’s a winning culture that’s been established by coach Mike Romeli, entering his sixth season.

“We’ve built a winning culture, an expectation, we’ve gotten after it in the weight room, we’re physical and talented,” Romeli said. “We need guys to step up. Who’s up next? You have to perform at the same level or higher than the guy in front of you.”

Those words hit home for the 2015 Bengals, who are young, hungry, talented and inexperienced.

“We’ve got a lot of seniors this year who played sparingly as juniors behind a lot of seniors last year,” Romeli said of the Bengals, who return six starters.

“We expect them to step into bigger roles and be stars this year.”

“The team is looking great, working hard, meshing together and we’re all very excited for the season,” junior running back/defensive back Troy Mayon said. “Everyone is trying to do great things this year.”

East will be anchored by three returning offensive lineman and two returning defensive backs. Leading the offensive line are the returnees – tight end Dylan Koch and offensive linemen Lemond Singleton (6-foot-4, 285 pounds), Isaiah Bryant (6-0, 220) and Solomon Kamara (6-3, 270).

“We have three seniors back on the offensive line and that certainly helps,” Romeli said. “We’re working diligently with the rest of the guys to get them ready to go when we start the season.”

Their job is simple – give quarterback Matt Mazurkiewicz time to run the offense. The senior attempted three passes as a reserve a season ago.

Assisting at the skilled positions are Mayon, tight end Dylan Cook and receivers Jalen Hutt and Jake Schram. All four are expected to play both sides of the ball.

“We expect those guys to have a big year on both sides of the ball,” Romeli said. “Between those guys, we should be good at the skilled positions.”

“We have to execute our plays and do our jobs every Friday to put us in position to win,” Mayon said.

“We lost a lot on defense,” Romeli said. “We lost eight starters, so we return three guys. But, we have some guys who sat behind seniors last year who are working hard at their positions. There’s talent and there are some positions that are still open.”

Among those expected to lead the way are senior defensive backs Donald Manning, Jarvis Carter and T.J. Alexander.

Steffan Veart is coming off ACL surgery and expected to bolster the linebacking unit. Romeli also is expecting big things from seniors Kevon Floyd and David Salazar and sophomores Matthew Pratscher and Billy Pierce.

“We have a lot of older guys mentoring the younger guys and helping them develop as players and students,” Mayon said. “Everyone is really helping each other out. We’re going to have great success.”

In the Southwest Prairie Conference, perennial champion Oswego again is the team to beat. However, the SPC qualified three teams for the playoffs last year.

“It’s a race to five (league wins),” Romeli said. “Most of the teams in our league who finish 5-4 make the playoffs, so it’s a race to five wins.”

“We’re starting to become a winning program,” Mayon said. “We have some big shoes to fill after making the playoffs the last two seasons. We’re trying to do it again and aim higher and go further than any team before. We just have to take it one week at a time.”

Hoosman rushed for 2,462 yards and scored 32 touchdowns for the Tigers, who finished 6-4. The man who paved the way for many of those yards, 6-foot-6, 295-pound Cody Conway, has moved on to Syracuse.

That’s the bad news.

“Quintin was a tremendous talent for us last season,” North coach Tim Kane said. “He was so productive in a number of ways and will be missed.”

The good news for Kane, entering his 10th year at the helm, is that offensive lineman Brent Johnson and tight end Kyle Speas return. In addition, offensive lineman Mitch Dodd and quarterback JD Ekowa also are back.

Returning from the 30-8 Class 4A Elite Eight Tigers’ baseball team is multi-talented receiver/defensive back Zach Jarosz. Quintin Hoosman’s brother Tyler and junior Nick Capezio will be the dynamic duo in the Tiger backfield.

“We should have a very explosive offense this year,” Speas said. “We’re looking forward to a solid passing game with JD, Zach and our other returning offensive starters. We believe Quin’s little brother Tyler and Nick Capezio will do a fine job with our running game.

“My job is to work hard with our receivers and make sure we are catching the football. Our goal is to have an undefeated regular season, win the Southwest Prairie Conference and win our first playoff game in school history.”

“My job up front is to get the offense started, “Johnson said. “I also believe Tyler Hoosman and Nick Capezio will do a fine job with our running attack. Our passing game should be very good, and I also believe we will win the Southwest Prairie Conference and win our first playoff game in school history.”

The defense returns six starters, led by junior defensive end JJ Frey. Linebackers Zach Shelton and William Stoll return as well as Jarosz, junior defensive back Kevin Block and senior defensive back Alec Lopez.

Southwest Prairie Conference. Defending champion Oswego, with the return of a healthy quarterback in Steve Frank, is a slight favorite in the topsy-turvy SPC. Every Friday night seems to be a weekly sequel of “The Gunfight at the OK Coral.” High-scoring, exciting high games which are a nightmare for defensive coordinators such as Kane.

“Every season, in all sports, here at Plainfield North, we feel we can win the SPC,” Kane said. “With Quintin (Hoosman) and Cody (Conway) graduated, we may have to retool our offense a little.

“With JD (Ekowa) back at quarterback and Kyle (Speas) and Zach (Jarosz) returning at wide receiver, we should have an effective passing game. I really believe our junior running backs, Tyler (Hoosman) and Nick (Capezio), will do the job in our backfield. Both kids are winners coming from the undefeated SPC sophomore champs from last year.”

As for the defense, Kane said, “We have some fine people back on defense, where we must excel. Our junior linebackers, Zach (Shelton) and William (Stoll), were hurt last season and are two quality football players.

“We’re really excited about this season. We have had back-to-back solid classes and we really feel we can win the SPC and the elusive first playoff game in school history. We were so close last season, falling, 42-34, to Normal in a game we thought we should have won.”

Porcello pitches Red Sox past White Sox

By JAY COHEN The Associated Press CHICAGO – Rick Porcello pitched seven sparkling innings in his return from a triceps injury, leading the Boston Red Sox to a 3-0 victory over the White Sox on Wednesday night.

Porcello and Chris Sale had nearly identical lines, but Travis Shaw hit a two-run homer off Nate Jones (1-1) with two outs in the eighth. Robbie Ross Jr. then got three outs for the Red Sox before Junichi Tazawa finished the six-hitter for his third save in nine chances.

Porcello (6-11) allowed five hits, struck out five and walked none in one of his best starts in a disappointing debut season with Boston. The righthander was acquired in a December trade with Detroit, and then agreed to an $82.5 million, four-year contract in April.

But it was Porcello’s first win in six weeks. He had been sidelined by a right triceps strain since he was tagged for five earned runs and 10 hits in two-plus innings in a loss to the White Sox on July 29.

Sale also pitched seven innings of five-hit ball. The lanky left-hander struck out seven,

running his major league-leading total to a career-best 229 in just 171 1-3 innings.

The Red Sox played without sluggers David Ortiz and Pablo Sandoval, who each got a day off. But Josh Rutledge contributed two hits, a ninth-inning sacrifice fly and an outstanding play at second base.

Porcello retired his first 10 batters before Melky Cabrera doubled with two outs in the fourth.

The White Sox had runners on the corners with one out in the fifth, but Porcello wiggled out of the jam with some help from Rutledge.

Morlan, shepherding pastor of Grace Fellowship Robert Morlan Church in Mokena, decided to write the story of how he went from atheist to Christian and did so in the newly released, “The Atheism That Saved Me.” “I wanted it to open up a new area of ministry for me where I can share the Gospel,” Morlan said. “That’s really the bottom line.”

In 1966, Morlan married Jann and resolved to be a good husband and father. After one miscarriage, Jann was 8 months pregnant when she wakened him one night with contractions. At the hospital, Morlan learned from Jann’s doctor how serious the situation was.

The return to God

In 1975, they adopted their daughter, Susan Lowe, now of California. John is now the pastor of First Baptist Church of Evergreen, Colorado.

Morlan and Jann have five grandchildren.

Although he was attending church, Morlan said he remained an atheist. But in May 1974, while vacationing on a small island in Canada and reveling in its sublime beauty, Morlan said he told God, “If you exist, you need to reveal yourself to me in an unmistakable, undeniable, unquestionable way.”

Morlan paused and added, “And, boy, did he.”

Morlan won’t say what happened (“You’ll have to read the book,” he said with a smile). But the events that transpired led him to enroll in seminary in 1982 and found Grace Fellowship Church in Mokena in 1992.

He hopes people that read who read “The Atheism that Saved Me” will understand two points – the importance of keeping family intact and the spiritual aspect of life.

“There is going to come a time when each one of us is going to stand before him [God] and give an account of our lives,” Morlan said. “We need to be well-prepared for it.”

She currently is one class away from her masters through the University of Illinois in recreation, sport and tourism. Jones will teach math and science. She spent

the past 8 years as an elementary school teacher’s aide, and spent two austral summers in Antarctica for Antarctic Support Associates.

• Brother Jeff Lima – Lima graduated from the University of Guelph with honors with a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts, both in history. He currently is working on his Master of Divinity and will teach freshman religion. He formerly worked in the IT Security Industry, and is from Toronto originally, but still is a Blackhawks fan.

• Ryan Quigley – Quigley is the new director of communications at JCA. A JCA graduate (’03), Quigley earned a Bachelor of Arts in English/ secondary education from St.

san Council of Catholic Women recently held its 32nd annual award Mass for the Bishop Blanchette Scholarship.

Six students were each awarded $3,000 for the 201516 school year. Students are selected by their individual parish CCW on the basis of scholarship achievement and financial need.

The award was established in 1982 as a living memorial which honors the late Bishop Romeo Blanchette. In the past 32 years,

$38 707,150 has been awarded to 189 students. The award is funded by donations to the BBSF fund.

Xavier University, while also earning an Master of Business in Administration in financial analysis and Investments from SXU. Quigley will coach sophomore girls basketball and has previously worked as a baseball scout, collegiate baseball coach and a high school English teacher.

A bridge player should never have a vacant mind or think that he might plunge into error.

But sometimes one can have a false sense of security. Do not jump to conclusions; think longer to see if there is a better line available.

In this deal, how should South play in six diamonds after West leads the spade queen?

On the second round of the auction, South was a smidgen strong for three diamonds, but a tad weak to rebid three no-trump (which would have promised about another king).

South has 11 top winners: one spade, two hearts, seven diamonds and one club.

Dear Dr. K: I’m a man in my 50s, and I’ve been feeling rundown. Is it possible I’m not getting enough iron in my diet?

Dear Reader: Many patients ask me this question. I think it has to do with an old commercial for a popular vitamin and mineral supplement to treat iron-poor “tired blood.” Iron helps make hemoglobin. That’s the molecule that grabs oxygen in the lungs and transports it around the body to release it as a source of energy to the cells in the body.

The USDA recommends that adult men get 8 milligrams of iron per day in their diets.

For women, the recommendation is 18 mg per day from ages 19 to 50, because women lose iron when they bleed during menstruation. For women age 50 and older, the recommendation is 8 mg per day.

If you feel rundown, lack of iron is probably not the cause, for two reasons. First, iron deficiency is unusual in men, unless they are losing blood (such as from a stomach ulcer that is slowly bleeding). You can easily get enough iron in your diet to avoid iron deficiency.

Red meat, fish, poultry and egg yolks contain the most easily absorbed form of dietary iron, called “heme” iron.

Foods that are artificially fortified with iron, such as breakfast cereals and grains, can also help to meet daily iron requirements. Whole grains, leafy greens, beans, lentils and nuts are also iron-rich.

The second reason your fatigue is unlikely to be due to iron deficiency is that until that deficiency is quite serious, it doesn’t produce fatigue. That’s because it takes severe iron deficiency to produce anemia bad enough to cause fatigue.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff On the other hand, if you are feeling unusually run- down, it’s wise to see your doctor. It’s simple to see if you are iron-deficient. If you are, you would definitely want to know about it.

Iron deficiency is one common cause of anemia. Being anemic means you don’t have enough red blood cells or hemoglobin to carry oxygen to your cells. Anemia is uncommon in the general population, but it becomes more likely as we get older. A simple blood test can detect both anemia and whether you are iron-deficient.

While I think it’s unlikely that your rundown feeling is due to iron deficiency, it surely could be. I would be more worried that you had iron deficiency, or anemia from some other cause, or both, if you had any one of the following symptoms: • Bowel movements with blood (or black, tarry material); • Urine that is occasionally a pinkish color (unless you’ve just eaten beets); • Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite; • Being unusually (for you) pale; • Unusual firm lumps in your neck, under your arms or in your groin.

A person who is iron-deficient can replace the iron he’s lost with iron pills. But don’t do that unless your doctor tells you to. Some people are born with a tendency to build up toxic levels of iron if they take iron pills without reason.

Dear Abby: My wife and I have been married 22 years, and we had a good marriage until recently. Over the last three years she has become more and more consumed with her phone and tablet.

She goes nowhere and does nothing without them.

Every night and weekend she sits engrossed in both devices until well after I have gone to bed. If I ask what she’s doing or who she’s texting, she accuses me of being controlling and not trusting her.

We can’t watch a movie, eat a meal (out or at home) or anything else without her constantly tending to at least one of her devices. She says she can multitask and I shouldn’t be concerned, but it has greatly diminished our relationship. I feel like when we’re together, I am really alone.

If that isn’t enough, I have seen her communications with other men, sometimes intimate, late at night. When I ask about them, she throws the same labels at me. What should I do? – Only Human in
