By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A judge ruled Tuesday police had probable cause to arrest a man they found hiding under a porch two blocks from where his ex-girlfriend was shot to death in her Romeoville driveway.

Erick M. Maya, 24, of Cicero has been charged with the murder of Briana Valle, 15, after allegedly ambushing her Erick M. and her mother, Maya Alicia Guerrero, after they got into their car Feb. 13 in the 300 block of Emery Avenue in Romeoville.

Briana, a Romeoville High School student who previously dated Maya, was shot in the head and died four days later.

Guerrero was shot in the neck but survived.

“I take it he wasn’t there doing home repair,” Judge Robert Livas said, while concluding investigators had “overwhelming probable cause” to detain Maya.

Hromadka, who was the only witness to testify in the pretrial hearing, said another detective already was aware Maya had sent Briana “threatening text messages” two months earlier. Hromadka also said he spoke with Briana’s father, Alejandro Valle, who believed Erick had attacked his daughter.

der of protection against Maya after he allegedly threatened to rape and kill the teenage girl.

The detective assigned to investigate the earlier threats brought Maya’s mugshots to the crime scene and distributed them to other officers, Hromadka said.

After Maya came out from under the deck, he identified himself as “Carlos.”

“I even held the two booking photos next to his head and he still denied [he was Erick],” Hromadka said.

Maya’s lawyer George Lenard said police had not spoken to any eyewitnesses to the shooting and nearby residents who called police varied in their description of the suspect’s clothing.

“What would a reasonably prudent police officer be expected to do? Not take him into custody?” Livas asked Lenard.

“Looking at the history [between Briana and Valle] whether he was wearing a brown sweatshirt or black sweatshirt is almost immaterial.”

Maya is scheduled to face a jury trial Sept. 8.

Man who murdered cab driver as juvenile to remain in prison

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man who was a teenager when he murdered a cab driver 30 years ago will remain in prison for the rest of his life.

Judge Robert Livas ruled Tuesday that a recent Supreme Court case regarding juvenile sentences does not mean the life-term of James E. Walker, 48, should be reconsidered.

Walker received the sentence for the 1984 murder of Charles Davis.

“We’re very relieved and excited about the outcome,” Davis’ sister Mary Ash said after Livas’ decision.

“It’s been very hard on us recently. Reopening this case

brought up a lot of [bad] memories,” Kathy Greenway, another sister, agreed.

On March 16, 1984, Walker, who was 17 at the time, and Xavier D. Williams, then 16, called for a taxi to rob the driver. According to court records, they had Davis, 29, stop in the 1200 block of Clark Street. Williams got out of the cab. Walker shot Davis, of Crest Hill, with a sawed-off shotgun he had hidden under his coat.

Walker later told police he killed Davis so he could not be identified.

Walker turned 18 a month after the killing. In 2012, the Supreme Court decided in “Miller vs. Alabama” that a mandatory life sentence for a juvenile was unconstitution-

al.

But Livas said a review of court transcripts and case law showed life without parole was not a mandatory punishment, so the Supreme Court case did not apply.

Livas said then-Judge Herman Hasse found Davis’ slaying was a “brutal and heinous crime” after Walker’s lawyer at the time made his age a central part of his argument.

“I don’t see how it was possible for [Hasse] to not consider [the age] factor at the time,” Livas said.

Williams was sentenced to 35 years in prison but was released before October 2011, according to court records.

Walker remains in the Pontiac Correctional Center. He did not attend Tuesday’s hearing.

LOCAL BRIEF Lockport home struck by lightning LOCKPORT – A Lockport home was struck by lightning Tuesday morning but sustained little damage, according to a Lockport fire official.

At 11:11 a.m., the Lockport Township Fire Protection District received a call about lightning striking a single-family home in Lockport’s Lago Vista subdivision, said Ed Rossetto, Lockport fire battalion chief.

The lightning ran down the home’s water pipe and burned some of the insulation inside the pipes, he said. There was no other damage.

The people inside the home smelled something burning when the lightning struck and contacted the Lockport Fire Protection District, he said.

Homer Township Fire Protection District also was called to the scene, but responders were turned away when Lockport fire officials learned the damages to the home were minor, he said.

Educators, students, parents still adjusting to new federal standard

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com Common Core math can be frustrating, especially for a parent who wants to help a child with homework.

“My son brought home his math homework,” Minooka resident Allison Selk said. “I helped him and we finished triumphantly only to get his paper back the next day with all of the problems I helped my son with wrong.”

Selk felt awful, but said she understood the reason behind the additional three or four steps it took beyond basic addition and subtraction.

“I think the kids have a lot of homework, but maybe that’s good to push our kids to excel,” Selk said. “In the long run, I did begin to respect the work and realize that making kids think in different ways could really expand their minds.”

The Common Core State Standard Initiative is a federal set of standards in math and language arts developed by education leaders and governors in 48 states. They are a “set of clear college- and career-ready standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English language arts/literacy and mathematics.”

According to the Common Core’s website, the standards are meant to teach children to think in different ways that are research and evidence-based, preparing them to solve real-world problems.

For math, this means not just learning 2 + 2 = 4, but why that is the case. For English and language arts, parents are seeing their children reading more about current events, bringing home more newspaper clippings and nonfiction literature.

tionwide: A recent poll by Education Next, a pro-education reform journal, showed public approval for the standards dropped significantly over the past year. But a majority of people still are in favor of Common Core.

New curriculum in local schools Illinois adopted Common Core standards in June 2010,

and local school districts have rolled out the new curriculum in the past two school years.

“The Common Core standards are consistent and focused,” said Elizabeth Yacobi, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction for Joliet Public Schools District 86. “This was lacking in the system prior to [Common Core’s] adoption.”

introduced new curriculum to kindergarten through second-grade students. Last year, it expanded to third through eighth grade.

English Language Arts Program Coordinator Carrie Busse is excited about the changes.

“For ELA, we want students to really be involved in increasing vocabulary,” she said. “Class is not based on a lecture format anymore.”

Students still will read classics such as “Huckleberry Finn.” But Common Core focuses on increasing vocabulary and getting children ready to study current events and nonfiction.

Mathematics Program Coordinator Jan Taylor said Common Core math is about conceptual understanding.

“It’s about taking another pathway to solve that problem and understanding the concept behind it,” Taylor said.

This year, the Joliet district is preparing to implement the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) exam, a new online test measuring student performance based on Common Core initiatives.

To help students adjust to learning math and English in a new way, the district has hired several math and literacy instructional coaches to work with students.

Richland School District 88a is much smaller than the Joliet school district. So it’s using other methods to help students.

“We’ve been trying to adjust the class hours to carve out more time for math and language arts,” Richland Principal Kelly Whyte said.

Richland is taking 120 minutes out of the day from other subjects and applying that to math and English language arts.

Veterans housing organizers rally for support

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Organizers behind a stalled plan to convert six Hickory Street row houses into veterans housing pitched their project to a mixed group of veterans and residents at VFW Cantigny Post 367 on Tuesday.

Christopher LaFayelle, co-founder of Veterans Housing and Employment Assistance, said his organization was developing projects around the state that provided both housing and jobs for veterans.

“I don’t think that being a veteran entitles you to any more than any other person,” LaFayelle said. “But it sure as hell doesn’t entitle you to any less.”

In a session that seemed part town hall meeting and part prayer revival, LaFayelle called on an audience of about 30 veterans and local residents to get behind the project and pressure the city to allow it.

The meeting, originally planned at St. Patrick’s Church, was moved to Post 367 after the church lost power. LaFayelle said his group plans to hold two more public information sessions to rally support behind the project.

Fayelle’s group, said plans now are to put 16 single bedroom apartments and two offices into the row houses.

The group’s original request to put 18 apartments into the property, which sits on about a third of an acre, was tabled by the Joliet Zoning Board of Appeals on June 19 over concerns about housing density, and after board members requested more information on the build-

ings’ conversion history.

Depending on when and how the row houses were converted, city ordinances would appear to allow for only 12 or 15 units in the structures, City Attorney Jeff Plyman noted at the June meeting.

Huminsky said Tuesday that the building was purchased from the bank as a 15unit dwelling in 2013. He said the group planned to add the

16th unit by converting space formerly used as an office.

Huminsky said his organization, Patriot Partners Development Group, plans to invest $1.6 million into the project, as well as an eight-unit property at 112-114 N. Center St., a fourunit property at 316 Oneida St. and a two-unit property at 314 Oneida St. Five of the units already have been rented out to veterans, he said.

Huminsky noted that the row house interiors are being completely gutted and renovated inside, while the historical exteriors of the buildings were kept intact.

Huminsky claimed efforts to renew action on the project were “blindsided” by a city staffer who expressed concerns over veterans living in the neighborhood.

Councilman-At-Large Jim McFarland, who attended the meeting with District 5 Councilman Terry Morris and District 2 Councilman Bob O’Dekirk, said the council would look into allegations about the staffer and take appropriate action.

O’Dekirk said Tuesday’s information was the first he had heard about the project and urged LaFayelle to bring the matter directly before the council.

LaFayelle questioned the need, noting that his group had followed all the rules just as if it was purchasing any other real estate. In the end, however, he said he would work with the council on the matter.

This is the second veterans housing project that has been stalled by the city. The first, a 73-unit site for homeless and low-income veterans on the former campus of Silver Cross Hospital, was delayed for a year over housing density concerns.

Lockport man lying in road victim of hit and run

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com ROCKDALE – Police say a man was lying in the street when he was fatally run over by a car Monday night.

The driver who allegedly struck the 31-year-old Lockport man did not stop, but was pulled over blocks away an hour later, according to Will County Sheriff Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas.

Daniel Litke, the man who was run over, and a friend had spent the day “drinking a large amount of alcohol” and riding

all-terrain vehicles on the trails off Mound Road, Kaupas said.

“Their pickup truck got stuck in the mud from the heavy rains that had fallen Monday afternoon, and they decided to leave on foot,” Kaupas Vernon said.

of Mound Road, according to Kaupas.

Kaupas said the driver of a northbound vehicle avoided striking Litke and pulled over a short distance away.

“Before this driver could offer assistance a [Chrysler] Pacifica that was also heading northbound ran [Litke] over and continued without stopping,” Kaupas said.

Kaupas said the bumper of the Pacifica, which contained a license plate, fell off in the collision.

About an hour after the crash, Joliet police said they

stopped a Pacifica with a missing bumper at Larkin Avenue and McDonough Street – less than a mile from the crash.

Kaupas said detectives questioned the four men inside the Pacifica and determined the backseat passengers had just been picked up by the other occupants.

The driver, Vernon D. Howard, 37, of the first block of Bradford Road, was taken into custody and charged Tuesday with failing to report an accident involving injury or death and is being held in the Will County jail on $250,000 bond.

“It appears alcohol use by the driver of the Pacifica played a role in the crash. Other charges may be pending when lab results are known,” Kaupas said.

According to jail records, Howard was arrested for unauthorized possession of a firearm in 2007 and drug possession in 2011 and 2013.

A passenger, Mark Pierce, 26, also of the first block of Bradford Road, was arrested because of an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in court on traffic violations, Kaupas said.

Channahon schools discuss superintendent search, school closure

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent CHANNAHON – The Channahon District 17 school board could take a vote next month on whether to close Pioneer Path school.

The future of Pioneer Path, as well as the search for a new school superintendent, were discussed at a school board work session Monday.` The board is looking at the possibility of closing Pioneer Path for the 2016-17 school year.

District enrollment has steadily declined for a few years and the trend is expected to continue. The board has discussed withdrawing students from Pioneer Path and operating only three schools.

Administrative offices would remain in the building.

“This district could fit students comfortably in three buildings,” Superintendent Karin Evans said.

The move out of Pioneer Path would save the district a few hundred thousand dollars a year on overhead costs alone, at least one board member estimates. Evans said she believes leasing out the space would not be difficult. She knows of at least two area organizations looking for such a site.

Evans presented the board with two possible consolidation options, both phasing Pioneer Path out by the 201617 school year. One plan adds third grade to N.B. Galloway School and adds fourth grade to Three Rivers School. Channahon Junior High School would remain with two grades.

The other option involves keeping Galloway as is, changing Three Rivers from fifth and sixth grades to grades third through fifth, and adding sixth grade to the junior high.

Administrators and the board leaned toward the first option, saying the junior high would not be readily adaptable to adding sixth grade.

The board asked Evans to put school consolidation on next

month’s agenda for more discussion and a possible vote.

The next scheduled board meeting is 7 p.m. Sept. 22 at Pioneer Path.

Superintendent search Evans is set to retire June 30, and the school board will begin searching for her replacement this fall. Members discussed whether to hire a search firm to find and vet candidates.

The cost of hiring a search firm, Evans said, would be at least $10,000 to $15,000, but a firm would help the board set its priorities.

Board member Joan Ferguson said she thought the board could do the search on its own, and Jim Bogacz thought an initial job posting might produce qualified candidates.

But in the end, the majority settled on hiring a firm.

Evans said she would present three search agencies to the board for interviews.

Once a search firm identifies candidates, the school board will conduct candidate interviews. A group of one or more teachers, principals, paraprofessionals and community members would also provide input.

Evans said potential candidates from Will County have already expressed interest.

“It’s an attractive district,” she said.

Galloway lunchroom changes pursued Finally Monday, the board also decided to make modifications to N.B. Galloway, a measure considered for the past year. The school’s lunchroom doubles as a gymnasium, and the physical education program stops for two hours midday to allow for lunch.

The board authorized an architectural firm to devise plans to convert Galloway’s lunchroom to a gym and to build a new lunchroom to also serve as a multi-purpose room.

The project cost, estimated by DLA Architects, would be $1.1 million, not including furniture.

Will County health center gets grant JOLIET – The Will County Community Health Center in Joliet will receive $248,814, courtesy of a federal grant through the Affordable Care Act. The office of U.S. Senator Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, announced the grant in a news release Tuesday. It comes as a part of $1.7 million awarded to Chicago area community health centers to support construction and renovation projects.

The Will County Health Department will use the money to make the community center’s waiting areas more

accessible for patients with disabilities and to improve check-in and check-out efficiency, said Vic Reato, health department spokesman.

“We’re always looking to improve the patient experience,” Reato said. “I think it’s incumbent on us to make them have an experience that will be a pleasant one.”

Health department officials plan to buy a wheelchair-accessible weight scale, reconfigure walls to provide more room in the waiting area and lower the height of registration desks, he said.

This money is provided by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and made available through

the Patient Centered Medical Home Facility Improvement Grant program.

Four health centers in Chicago, one in La Grange and another in Oak Park, will also benefit from the award.

Fundraiser started to help fired District 89 employee

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – The friend of a fired Fairmont School District 89 employee is trying to drum up funds to support her in a lawsuit against school officials.

The GoFundMe fundraiser, however, has only raised $150 from a few donors over several weeks. The goal is to raise $20,000.

Mary Kaley, a Tinley Park real estate agent, put together

the fundraiser for her friend, Debra Acanfora, a former curriculum coordinator who is suing the Fairmont school district.

“I really feel like Debra needs some relief from anxiety from the financial side of things,” she said.

She said she started the fundraiser to support a friend who is unemployed, trying to care for a disabled mother and waging a legal fight against a school district.

Acanfora alleged she was

unfairly fired in May and suffered abuse from district Superintendent Sonya Whitaker during her employment.

School officials have denied Acanfora’s allegations. An internal investigation conducted by their defense counsel indicated they were unfounded, school officials have said.

“Legal costs associated with this matter will primarily be covered by the district’s legal liability insurance policy,” school board President Joseph Ryan wrote in a statement.

Minooka’s history makes it “a nice place to call home” SPONSORED BY

By Stephanie Kohl Founded in 1869 along the Rock Island Railroad, the village of Minooka was originally called “the summit” by railroad workers because it was the highest point along the railroad line.

According to The Electronic Encyclopedia of Chicago, Minooka was named by early settler Dolly Smith, after a Pottawatomie word for “good land” or “high place.” According to information on the village’s website, compiled by Michele Houchens, at the time of the village’s incorporation, Leander Smith, husband of Dolly Smith, was named village president with A.K. Knapp, William Jordan, Thomas Harris and S.B. Alsdurf as elected trustees.

St. Mary’s Church was organized in 1862. The current church was built in 1905 after a fire destroyed the original church. The Minooka Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1856, though the original church was destroyed by

a tornado in 1917. The current church was built soon after the tornado, according to the information from Houchens.

Transportation played a large role in turning Minooka into the booming community it is today. In 1852, the first train entered Grundy County in what is now Minooka. In the 1960s, Interstate 80 was built, which gave easier access to Minooka, according to the village website.

At the 2010 census, the population of the village was 10,924. Its 2013 population is estimated at 11,129, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

LOCKPORT – In Illinois and New York there exist two cities with two canals that share the same name: Lockport.

And in recent weeks, Robert Perretta, 4th Ward alderman from the Lockport in Illinois, got to see if there were any similarities between the two cities when he went on a vacation with his family. He found some.

“I told many residents already, I felt like I was in the ‘Twilight Zone’ because the two towns are so similar,” he said in a past City Council meeting.

One of the most obvious is that the cities are located near a canal. Lockport, Illinois, is located next to the Illinois and Michigan Canal. Lockport, New York, is next to the Erie Canal. Both have fostered economic growth for their regions.

They are close in population size, too, as the Lockports in New York and Illinois have about 20,000 and 25,000 people, respectively.

Perretta said he spoke with the captain of the Lockport Police Department in New York and asked if some of their officers had switched to a 12-hour shift like the police department back home. They did, he said.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A Morris man was arrested at a music festival in Wisconsin after authorities said he tried to run down three police officers as they pursued him.

Jonathan D. Taller, 29, of 2910 N. Country Oak Lane, was charged by the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department with three counts of first degree recklessly endangering safety, one count of possession with intent to deliver methamphetamine and one count of possession with intent to deliver more than 50 grams of a Schedule I controlled substance.

He also was charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, second offense, and resisting an officer. All the alleged offenses took place

during the Summer Set Music and Camping Festival on Aug. 16 in Somerset, Wisconsin.

In a police report first reported on and provided to the Morris Daily Herald by the New Richmond-News, police allege Taller was in his car when he was approached by several officers attempting to take a male subject into custody on drug-related charges at about 3:45 a.m.

Taller did not get out of the car after repeated requests at gunpoint, according to the reports. When Somerset police officer Brian Edwards went to open the door to apprehend Taller, Taller put the vehicle in reverse and crashed into a squad car behind him.

Edwards took out his firearm and pointed it at Taller, but Taller reportedly accelerated forward at a high rate of

speed toward Edwards and two other officers.

“I kept ordering the male to stop,” Edwards stated in the report. “I was in great fear of my life ... other officers’ lives and safety, as well as other campers in the area.”

The three officers jumped out of the way, and Taller allegedly drove over a tent before his car got stuck in a sand volleyball court 40 yards away.

Taller attempted to free the car, but the car’s wheels spun deeper into the sand.

Edwards caught up to the vehicle with the other officers and used a collapsible baton to break the front driver’s side window. He confronted Taller at gunpoint and Taller parked the car and surrendered.

Taller remained in St. Croix County Jail as of Tuesday afternoon.

“Common Core really changes the role of teachers,” Yacobi said. “They’re now more facilitators of learning for students.”

For teachers, the standards meant summer sessions on lesson planning and teaching methods that align with Common Core.

But while the standards had a very high approval rating among teachers in 2013, the Education Next survey revealed support fell from 76 percent to 46 percent in 2014.

Richard Manley, president of the AFT Local 604 teachers union, which covers several school districts in Will, Grundy and Kankakee counties, said teachers are taking a wait-and-see approach.

“Common Core is a good idea, but it was developed by the National Governor’s

Association and Council of Chief State School Officers,” Manley said. “We don’t feel that the practitioners or the educators have had a whole lot to say about the implementation.”

Manley said teachers are against excessive testing requirements and have concerns about properly addressing the educational needs of disadvantaged students, as well as the needs of students with disabilities or special needs.

“I have guarded optimism that Common Core will survive,” Manley said, noting five states have dropped out of the initiative in the past year.

Selk said her son’s teacher explained the new system of learning not just to her son, but to her.

“Our teacher was fantastic and truly had the kids’ true success at heart,” she said.

“However, I do know some of the kids in the class struggled greatly.”

Clinic provides dog care during home makeover

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – When three brothers left their New Lenox home so it could be remodeled, they had to leave one family member behind.

Brothers Ray, Lawrence and Don Sabec couldn’t bring their 4-year-old black Labrador mix, Shadow, with them to the house where they are temporarily staying while their home undergoes a makeover.

Nonprofit organizations ShareFest and Operation Nehemiah have pooled funds and volunteers to bring new life to the brothers’ deteriorated home. The majority of the work began Aug. 1.

Instead of being alone or temporarily abandoned, Shadow is being cared for by one of the receptionists at the Animal Care Clinic of New Lenox.

He has received extensive, free medical treatment from the clinic.

“We actually don’t get the opportunity to do this so it’s nice for us to share our expertise and knowledge with someone in the community,” said Tina Medland, the clinic’s hospital manager.

When Shadow came under the clinic’s care Aug. 2, he had flea bite dermatitis and no flea, heartworm or tick prevention treatments, she said. He received a flea bath, vaccinations and a rabies shot. A doctor at the clinic also offered to neuter him at no charge.

The clinic is working to provide three months worth of flea and tick prevention at

no cost. When Shadow and the Sabec brothers are reunited, Medland said they plan to give him chewable flea treatment pills.

“We want to make sure whatever we sent home with the brothers is easy to dispense,” she said.

Shadow also is working with a local trainer for free to improve his behavior. While he’s not aggressive, he lacks obedience, Medland said.

She said the brothers have visited Shadow while volunteers with Operation Nehemiah and ShareFest work on their home, 717 S. Prairie Road. The brothers have lived in the home since 1946, but problems they could not fix led to its decline.

Rob Lach, executive director of Operation Nehemiah, said plumbing and electric infrastructure work is finished.

Door and window replacements have been done as well.

Workers are reconfiguring the layout, he said.

He said he’ll have a better idea of when the project will be finished once drywall work is complete the weekend after Labor Day. “I think it’s coming along well, considering the time the brothers have been out. It’s come a long way. I’m happy with the progress,” he said.

JOLIET – The Joliet Township High School District recently received the Association of School Business Officials International’s Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting.

The award is given for meeting or exceeding the organization’s standards for financial reporting and accountability, according to a news release from the school district. This is the 27th time the school district has received the award.

OBITUARIES CLIFFORD E. AUTH Born: Sept. 13, 1923; in Bluegrass, IL Died: Aug. 25, 2014; in Eureka, IL Clifford Eugene Auth, age 90, beloved husband and father, passed away at 3:00 a.m., at his home after a very full life of almost 91 years, on August 25, 2014.

He was born September 13, 1923, in Bluegrass, Illinois, to Frank Joseph and Margaret Gladys Judy Auth. He was known as Gene, to the family and friends he grew up with and all their children, but everyone else called him Cliff.

Cliff served in the Army Air Corp weather service during World War II. He helped the aviators defend against German submarine attacks in the Caribbean. After the war, he moved to Joliet, Illinois where he worked for Caterpillar Tractor Company as a processing engineer.

He met his future wife, Phyllis Joan “Bonnie” Malone, in a dance class. They were married June 29, 1958, and raised two sons, Phillip and Timothy in New Lenox, Illinois.

They were avid campers and traveled extensively around the United States.

He retired from Caterpillar after 30 years in 1983. After Cliff’s retirement, he discovered that he was an artist and enjoyed painting. Cliff and Bonnie became “snowbirds” and eventually settled in Harlingen, Texas, where they were active in square dancing and Cliff joined the local Art Guild.

Bonnie died in 2002, and Cliff discovered that lightening can strike twice when he fell in love again, and married Reta Mae Babione, in Harlingen, Texas, on October 7, 2004. Cliff and Reta moved to Illinois in 2009, to be near his family.

Cliff is survived by his second wife, Reta of Eureka; sons, Phillip of Austin, Texas and Timothy (Kari) of Washington, Illinois; sisters, Francis (Delbert) Remole of Potomac, Illinois and Joanne Boyd of Danville, Illinois; his grandchildren, Danielle (Matt) Colgan, Nicolas Auth and Rachel Auth; one great grandson, Atlas Colgan; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was loved and will be missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Bonnie; and his brother, Maurice.

According to his wishes, he will be cremated, and a visitation will

be held at University United Methodist Church, 2818 N. University Street, Peoria, Illinois, on Saturday, August 30, 2014, at 9:30 a.m., with a memorial service immediately following at 10:30 a.m. A private inurnment will be at the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery at a later date.

Argo-Ruestman-Harris Funeral Home in Eureka is assisting the family with their arrangements.

THEODORE H. BRASHLER Theodore H. “Ted” Brashler, age 92, late of Homer Glen, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 23, 2014.

Born in Milwaukee, WI, living in the Lockport / Homer Glen area since 1960. Ted was the proud partner of Brashler and Kall Construction Company where he and Henry Kall developed the Chickasaw Hills subdivision in Homer Glen. Ted and Henry Kall were pioneers in bringing quality residential homes to the Homer Glen community. They also developed other properties in the Chicagoland area and Mountain Home, AR. In his later years Ted worked with family members to develop Windmill Estates Subdivision, also in Homer Glen.

He was a Navigator in the U.S. Air Force during WWII, receiving the Air Medal for flying over 30 missions during his years of service.

An avid bridge player; in his younger years excelled at many activities including golf, bowling, ping pong and chess. Ted cared deeply for his family and will be missed.

Family members will remember him always for the adventurous fishing trips to Canada, intriguing games of charades, battleship, family nights and the infamous game bing bang bong.

Preceded in death by his beloved wife Anna C. Brashler (2011) and his parents.

Survived by his four devoted children, Steven (Mary Lou), Andrew (Mary Ellen), Sue (Bruce) Hollister and Mike (Lois) Brashler; grandchildren, Lori (Rick), Sherri (Danny),

Kyle (Karin), Susanna, Hudson, Hadyn (Amber), Nate (Sonia), Grace (Weien), Gretta, Shannon, Jason (Andrea) and Laura; six great grandchildren, Lyndsey, Jennifer, Jillian, Savanah, Danny Jr., Izzy and more on the way; a great-greatgrandson, Alexander; and a loving brother, Dick (Mary Ann) Brashler.

JONATHAN E. ELLIS Born: Sept. 9, 1952 Died: Aug. 20, 2014 Jonathan Edward Ellis, born September 9, 1952; went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 20, 2014.

Preceded in death by his beloved parents Jackston and Zelda Ellis.

Survived by his sisters, Bonnie (Kerry) Ewald, Connie (Patrick) Sullivan, Kathleen (William) Brewer, Linda Aguilar; and his brother, Steven Ellis; his nieces and nephews, Nicole and Steven M. Jon was born in Joliet, the oldest of six children. He graduated from Lockport Township High School in 1970. He attended Joliet Jr. College and Northwestern Bible College in Roseville, MN where he was the student body president.

During and after college he worked a variety of retail security jobs. He was a security officer and then the night manager at the Amfac/Marriott Hotel in Minneapolis, MN. He also worked for Kodak

He was currently employed by the University of St. Francis as a security officer. He was the advisor for the International Club, and last spring was deeply honored when he was given an award as Security Officer of the Year by the Residence Education students/staff.

He was a longtime member of Faith Bible Church and Fellowship Bible Church in Joliet. As a teen, he was active at the Joliet Christian Youth Center.

Jon was outgoing and friendly with everyone and was well liked by all who knew him. He was a loving son, brother, and uncle and was a loyal and generous friend to many. He had a lively sense of humor, was a good story teller, and a talented singer who played the guitar and wrote his own songs.

He loved sports; he played and coached softball and fast pitch.

He was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears and Cubs. He enjoyed meeting celebrities, something he had many opportunities to do in his position at the Amfac Hotel where musicians and professional sports teams often stayed. He also loved to travel. In addition to family trips to Israel and Europe, he enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Europe, and the Middle East as a flight attendant. His favorite pastime was having coffee and eating out with friends.

Visitation will be on Thursday, August 28th from 3 - 7 p.m. at the Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home. Interment will be on Friday, August 29th at 10:00 a.m. at Elmhurst Cemetery, 1212 E. Washington St. A service to celebrate and commemorate his life will be held on Saturday, August 30th at 10:00 a.m. at Faith Bible Church, 1600 Schuster St., Joliet, IL.

CLARA B. GUMIENNY Clara B. Gumienny (nee Benco), age 85, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 22, 2014, with her loving family by his side.

Clara is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth (John) Fitzgerald; 3 grandchildren, Jennifer, Amy and Heather Fitzgerald; two great-grandsons, Ethan Tyler Moss and Caleb Edward Fitzgerald; sisters-in-law, Phyllis (the late Bernard) Benco and Lorraine Evans; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Richard C. “Dick” Hoy, 90, of Lewisburg, PA passed away Saturday, August 23, 2014 at his home. He was married to the former Frances L. Matis, of Joliet, IL on June 30, 1947, at Old St. Mary’s Church in Chicago, IL. Together they celebrated almost 59 years of marriage before her death June 12, 2006.

Dick was born November 27, 1923 in Cokeburg, PA, the only son of the late Harold L. and Nellie (Muffley) Hoy. He was a 1948 graduate of Bucknell University, Lewisburg, PA where he earned a degree in finance.

He also studied basic engineering for three semesters at Baylor University, Waco, TX under the Army specialized training program.

He was drafted into the Army on Feb. 25, 1943, and later transferred to the Army Air Force, where he served as a radar mechanic attached to the 62nd troop carrier squadron in England and France for 14 months.

Dick was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant on Apr. 1, 1946.

In 1951, he became general accountant at American Home Foods, Milton, PA and was later transferred to their Oakland, CA plant as manager of accounting from 1955 to 1965.

He returned to the Milton plant as assistant comptroller and retired as assistant treasurer in 1984, after 33 years with the company.

Surviving are three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Mary Jo Hoy and Michael and Deborah Hoy, all of PA and Mark and Barbara Hoy, of MD; nine grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Aug. 26, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Lewisburg, PA. Burial with full military honors followed in the Lewisburg Cemetery.

Dolores was born and raised in Springfield, Illinois, she enjoyed bowling, crafts and going to the casino. She was a loving wife and a dear sister.

EPA: Oil spill seeped to area canal

CICERO – The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency is seeking enforcement action against a Cicero firm after an oil spill reached a nearby canal.

The EPA said Tuesday it’s asked Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office to obtain an order requiring Olympic Oil Ltd. to stop the spill and clean up contaminated soil and water.

The facility blends and packages petroleum lubricating oil and antifreeze products.

The agency said an investigation last Friday found that petroleum products spilled over an onsite containment structure and ran into the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.

Containment booms were placed in the canal and a trench

dug to contain petroleum from the site. Officials say 1,650 gallons have been removed so far.

Kincaid mayor quits after charges

KINCAID – The mayor of Kincaid in central Illinois has resigned after he was charged with violating an order of protection and possessing drugs.

The State Journal-Register said the Kincaid Village Board voted Monday to accept the resignation of Douglas A. Thomas. It will pay him about $1,200 for leaving before his term ends.

Thomas faces one count of official misconduct in relation to using village employees for personal gain, as well as two counts of drug possession and violating an order of protection.

By STEPHEN OHLEMACHER The Associated Press WASHINGTON – Government investigators found no proof that delays in care caused veterans to die at a Phoenix VA hospital, but they found widespread problems that the Veterans Affairs Department is promising to fix.

Investigators uncovered large-scale improprieties in the way VA hospitals and clinics across the nation have been scheduling veterans for appointments, according to a report released Tuesday by the VA’s Office of Inspector General.

The report said workers falsified waitlists while their supervisors looked the other way or even directed it, resulting in chronic delays for veterans seeking care.

“Inappropriate scheduling practices are a nationwide systemic problem,” said the report by Richard Griffin, the VA’s acting inspector general. “These practices became systemic because (the Veterans Health Administration) did not hold senior headquarters and facility leadership re-

sponsible and accountable.”

The report could deflate an explosive allegation that helped launch the scandal in the spring: That as many as 40 veterans died while awaiting care at the Phoenix VA hospital. Investigators identified 40 patients who died while awaiting appointments in Phoenix.

But, the report said: “While the case reviews in this report document poor quality of care, we are unable to conclusively assert that the absence of timely quality care caused the deaths of these veterans.”

Top VA officials called the report’s findings troubling.

“I’m glad that veterans didn’t die because of delays in care, or at least they weren’t able to conclude that they did,” Deputy VA Secretary Sloan Gibson said in an interview. “But the fundamental issue is, veterans are waiting too long, and that’s the problem we’ve got to face.”

Addressing the American Legion’s national convention in Charlotte, N.C., President Barack Obama said lengthy wait times and attempts to

hide scheduling flaws were “outrageous and inexcusable.”

“We are very clear-eyed about the problems that are still there,” Obama said.

“And those problems require us to regain the trust of our veterans and live up to our vision of a VA that is more effective and more efficient and that truly puts veterans first.

And I will not be satisfied until that happens.”

Investigators examined health records and other information for 3,409 Phoenix patients, including the 40 who died. They identified 28 patients who experienced “significant delays in care.”

Of those patients, six died, the report said.

In addition, they identified 17 patients “whose care deviated from the expected standard.” Of those patients, 14 died, the report said.

Since problems at the VA emerged earlier this year, the inspector general’s office said it has received 225 allegations of misconduct at the Phoenix VA, and 445 allegations of manipulated wait times at other VA medical facilities.

Update state’s aging technology Illinois state government is in trouble again.

This time, the inspector general for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services let Illinois have it for its faulty way of withdrawing federal Medicaid money.

The federal audit, released last week, found that the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services, during fiscal 2010 through 2012, averaged withdrawing $60 million more quarterly in Medicaid money than it actually needed. That’s a no-no.

The extra Medicaid money was deposited in the state’s general fund and used for purposes for which it was not intended, such as transportation, education and pensions.

That’s another no-no.

And during the period audited, Illinois was two to six months’ late in repaying the Medicaid money, costing the federal government nearly $800,000 in lost interest. Oops.

State officials said they justified all the money they withdrew.

The problem, according to Michael Casey, a state finance administrator, is the state’s outdated, 30-year-old computer system.

It’s so old it can’t do daily calculations for the reimbursement rates for a half-dozen different programs. So officials basically give their best educated guess as to the dollar amounts needed.

Blaming the computer is as old an excuse as the computer age itself. But in this case, Casey is right.

The authors of “Fixing Illinois: Politics and Policy in the Prairie State” reported the findings of a 2009 report by the Taxpayers’ Action Board. James D. Nowlan and J. Thomas Johnson wrote that Illinois’ human services departments have “dozens of legacy computer systems,” and many of them are 30 to 40 years old.

Such antiquated, fragmented systems “inhibit worker productivity, prevent Illinois from reducing costs, and challenge cross-department collaboration,” they wrote.

That prompted Nowlan and Johnson to offer No. 27 of their 98 suggestions to improve state government.

They call on the state to develop a modern information technology system for human services, where all agencies can share information about clients.

To pay for all the new computers, software and networks, the state’s bonding authority should be used for “this desperately needed long-term capital investment.”

Nowlan and Johnson have an excellent point.

The aging computer systems in state government are dragging it down. Upgrades across the board could greatly lessen problems in human services agencies, and very likely other state departments and agencies.

While Casey was quoted as saying his department is due to receive new computers by the end of 2017, we say that’s not soon enough.

It’s time for state governmental leaders to get serious about addressing the state’s aging information technology before it gets Illinois into any more trouble.

Nostalgic for rotary phone, simpler time SPRINGFIELD – I bought a “new” phone the other day.

My 6-year-old, Anna, gave it a perplexed look.

“Where’s the buttons, Daddy?”

“There isn’t any, dear. It’s what’s called a rotary phone.”

She gave it another skeptical look and walked away.

Yes, when I dial, I actually dial.

An hour or so later when my wife got home from work, she also gave it a bewildered look and said, “Why did you install that old thing? It doesn’t even have caller ID. How will we know whether to answer the phone or not?”

Folks, it’s not about nostalgia.

Sometimes, I think I just need a break from technology.

Growing up, all the phones in our house had dials.

The idea of push button technology was in its infancy.

No one ever got stuck in voicemail hell.

I remember watching a news program back in the ’70s where the reporter noted that someday people might have

My father just shook his head and said, “I wouldn’t want to have a phone where I could be called anytime, anywhere.”

Flash forward 40 years, and now he carries a cellphone with him wherever he goes.

I’m the same way – electronics seem to be taking over my life.

My kids make bookmarks at school, but I have no way to use them with my Kindle.

I bicycle 17 miles daily, but not through the country roads of Sangamon County. Instead, I’m on a stationary bike at a gym, peering at movies on my iPad. And I have a phone in my pocket with an app for just about everything but curing cancer.

But, gosh, it’s hard to

escape the constant stream of communication.

Anyone can reach me anytime. Facebook posts, tweets, emails and phone calls pour in constantly.

And my 8-year-old, Grace, loves to play games on the device.

When I was a kid, I was told a phone was nothing to play with. Today, they are a source of entertainment.

When I walk into a restaurant, I see faces young and old enthralled with whatever is on that tiny screen.

Don’t people talk to one another face-to-face anymore?

Installing a dial phone won’t make those frustrations go away, of course.

But it does remind me of a simpler time when it was possible to hang up on technology – without pushing button.

SWSC cross country teams kick off season

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – After placing 13th at the IHSA Class 3A cross country meet as a sophomore, Natalie Waters qualified for state again last year but could not compete because of an injury.

The Lincoln-Way West senior is hoping that things will be different this fall. And after a busy summer schedule, she kicked off the new year in a big way Tuesday at the SouthWest Suburban Conference Preseason meet at Channahon Community Park.

Waters turned in a time of 18:46.7 over a course that slightly reconfigured because of the day’s heavy rains to win the girls title. Her effort was nearly 13 seconds ahead of the runner-up, Sandburg’s Casey Jensen.

“This summer, I was really dedicated to coming back to where I was performing in my sophomore year, or doing even better,” Waters said. “I went out to Colorado to train, so I’m hoping that this season turns out good. I honestly didn’t know what to expect when I went into it. I didn’t know if I’d ever get back since I didn’t know how my body would react.”

Lincoln-Way Central received top-10 finishes from Madison Smith (third, 19:41.4), Heidi Killinger (fourth, 19:44.1) and Liz Venezio (eighth, 20:28.6).

Lockport had two finishers in the top six and two others among the initial dozen placers. Haley Beaumont (fifth, 20:20.1), Emily Hahn (sixth, 20:20.5), Alicia Ary (11th, 20:35.9) and Emily Stoklosa (12th, 20:37.0) led the way.

Porters coach Evon Schlotter is pleased with this year’s squad.

She retired from teaching this spring, but is back for her 35th year in coaching, including 29th in cross country.

“We’re missing some leaders from last year,” Schlotter said.

“So there’s a little bit of a leadership-lag and we’ll see if we can fix that. The girls are young, enthusiastic and en-

group of young ladies this year,” Tigers coach Matt Almon said.

“From their work ethic, manners, school work, everything that they do is the definition of a student athlete. Our roster is full of great kids, and we have some tremendous runners.”

Tommy Kolacki, a senior from Lincoln-Way Central, claimed top honors in the boys race.

The three-year state qualifier who placed 49th last year in Class 3A, posted a winning time of 15:38.0.

“I was real happy with how I did,” Kolacki said. “There was definitely a lot of competition so I was real excited to be able to come in first. My main goal since I’ve been a freshman is to be all-state, so hopefully, I can do that this year after training real well over the summer.

“Ian Peterson also did real well for us and I think that we’ll have a real strong team this year.”

“I’m pretty happy with how I did, but I’m definitely not satisfied,” Rosendo said.

“The racing conditions weren’t like I thought they’d be. It was a lot muddier than I expected, and they changed the course and it was a little shorter.

“I thought that I had a pretty good chance of finishing in the top three, and I just stuck to it.”

The Knights had three others placers among the top 15 in the field. They were Andrew Robbins (ninth, 16:20.2), Jackson Waters (11th, 16:21.9) and Ben Alvarado (15th, 16:36.4).

Bolingbrook football always is on the map.

This offseason, however, things became even more interesting in Raider Nation.

Coach John Ivlow announced he was adding several veteran coaches to his staff. Among them was legendary former Morris coach Dan Darlington, who was coming on board as the offensive coordinator, along with his longtime Morris assistant, Keith Laughary, and Jim Farber.

With the new season getting underway Friday night, we are about to get our first look at the new Raiders’ offense as it faces Hinsdale Central. Darlington’s teams at Morris were known for their quality and diversification. When things weren’t working, he always had a ting or two up his sleeve.

With the athletes Bolingbrook will put on the field, it will be interesting to see how this offense attacks the opposition, and how returning option quarterback Quincy Woods – who also is a dangerous receiver – contrib-

Elsewhere, there’s the area representation in the Interstate Eight. Wilmington annually dominates in the Interstate-8 Small, where Seneca was a factor last season and Reed-Custer looks to be improved under first-year coach Mark Wolf. Coal City and Peotone, meanwhile, are teams to reckon with in the I-8 Large.

Not that anyone wants to be caught looking ahead, but Coal City and Wilmington will clash in Week 2. When you talk rivalries, that’s the kind of game you are talking about.

Of course, it is difficult to do any better than the rivalries that will be renewed Friday night at Memorial Stadium, where Joliet Catholic will entertain Providence, and at Minooka, where Morris comes calling.

It’s much too early to begin pondering the postseason.

However, after reading our outlook stories and the capsule summaries that are presented here, I can’t help but feel that – given reasonably good health – our area will be looking good come November.

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com After watching the sophomore teams battle in a close three game match Tuesday night, Minooka beat Lockport in a nailbiting two games, 3028, 25-22. Saying that the volleyball season started with excitement would be an understatement.

During the first game, the Indians and Porters battled neck and neck for each point.

Toward the middle of the first game, nerves could be felt throughout the crowd.

Ginger Perinar blocked Olivia Witsaman, making the score 19-16 Minooka. Lockport called its first timeout and after play continued, the Porters stormed back.

The Porters sided out, making the score, 19-17. Minooka

then committed a net violation and hitting error. Lockport’s Julia Elsouso and Morgan Valley shut down Perinar in one of her hardest swings of the night, giving Lockport another point.

The Indians called a timeout to regroup down, 20-19.

The two teams continue to battle point for point after the timeout. Perinar swung hard line, bouncing the ball near the 10-foot line to tie the game, 22-22. After siding out, Rachel Napoli served an ace, giving Lockport game point.

After Minooka sided out, Perinar blocked Lockport’s right side, giving Minooka its first game point.

Lockport’s Elsouso puts down a ball, tying the game again, 25-25. The sides kept battling until the final point.

Perinar swung from the back row and ended the first game,

30-28, for an Indians win.

The entire second game was similar to the first. The teams continued to battle each other, point for point. Like the first, Minooka came out on top.

Winning the opener was not the only exciting part about the game for Minooka. It was the first time it won the opening game in the first match, according to its setter.

“This is the first time that Minooka won its first game, ever,” Kelly Clucas said. “We won both matches so it was really exciting. We played together as a team and we pushed through. We have a lot of potential this year because everyone plays well together.”

Leading the Indians were Perinar with 14 kills, 10 digs and three blocks and setter Clucas with 32 assists and three blocks. Also contrib-

uting to the Indians’ success were libero Theresa Diamon with 15 digs and middle hitter Cynthia Ley with seven kills and two blocks.

Minooka is excited to see how well they will compete throughout the year.

“Our team was able to push through, even when we were down,” Perinar said. “When the points were critical, we were able to push through that which is a good sign for the season. Just knowing we can do that is going to take us really far this year.”

“I think we will be very solid,” Indians coach Chris Hoelscher said. “They are a wonderful group of girls. They are positive and they work hard.

They work for each other.

That is one of our core values; we play for each other. They describe themselves as a clus-

ter of grapes. They are all different, but very close to each other.”

Despite losing the home opener, Lockport coach Erika Lange was happy with the Porters’ performance.

“It was very close game and that’s how it was last year,” Lange said.

“I think that it’s a good gauge for us. Minooka is a very tall team that runs a consistent offense. We’re going to see that every night in our conference. For the first game of the season, to be that close to a good team with good offense gives us a lot of confidence in what we need to work on and where we need to go to start winning those games.”

Leading Lockport were Lindsey Visvardis with 12 digs, Valley with five kills and Elsouso with four kills.

The Slammers got one of those runs back in the bottom of the fifth but missed a chance to get more. They had the bases loaded with one out and scored only on a wild pitch. The potential tying run was thrown out at the plate on a close play on a fielder’s choice.

Joliet’s offense struggled

against the left-handed slants of the Freedom’s Dave Middendorf. He worked seven innings and allowed six singles in five different innings.

The only inning the Slammers had two hits off him was the fifth.

Right-hander Daniel DeSimone relieved for Florence to open the eighth and allowed a leadoff single to Chris Epps.

Matt Weaver sacrificed him to second and Grant DeBruin was walked intentionally even though he was the goahead run.

Last Friday, when the Slammers were beginning their weekend sweep at Windy City, the Washington Wild Things’ Jonathan Kountis recorded his 29th save of the season, breaking the Frontier League mark set in 2011 by the Slammers’ Ryan Quigley during their championship season.

Lynch to get big opportunity in preseason finale

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com LAKE FOREST – Nine Bears were healthy scratches in last week’s preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Aside from quarterback David Fales, who did not play so the quarterbacks could get their reps, Jordan Lynch and Marcus Trice are the only two who did not play but still are with the team.

They both survived the first set of cuts.

It never is a great sign to not play in a preseason game when one is on the roster bubble. It’s a missed opportunity to put together quality tape, but Lynch will get a lot of chances to prove something in the preseason finale Thursday in Cleveland.

“I expect you’ll see quite a bit of him. I’m sure he’ll have an opportunity to carry the football, to do a little bit of what he did a couple of games ago when he got a couple of reps and did very well running the football,” coach Marc Trestman said after Tuesday’s practice. “So it’ll be a good opportunity for him to get out there and show what he’s learned and how he’s improved over the last month of playing a completely new po-

“That’ll involve pass protection as well. You know this is a team that brings the blitz, so he’ll have an opportunity to get in the pass protection as well, and catch some balls outside the pocket and stuff like that. I’m excited for him and his opportunity.”

In the preseason opener, the only time Lynch got reps

on offense, the former Northern Illinois quarterback and Heisman Trophy finalist had seven carries for 24 yards, including a 12-yard run. He played in five special teams snaps against Jacksonville.

“It’s a very exciting week – now I get to actually go out there and kind of showcase my talent. I’m really excited,” Lynch said. “

I’m prepared for this, and I just love football. I get a chance to go out there fly around and have fun.”

The Bears will cut their roster down to 53 players, releasing 22 players, at some point before Saturday afternoon. Lynch is a long shot to make the team and certainly is a candidate for the practice squad. But he also knows a

good performance against the Browns helps his cause to join another team’s roster or practice squad.

“Like the coaches said, ‘You’re not only auditioning for this team, you’re auditioning for 31 other teams,’” he said. “Just got to get some tape on me. The more you can do, the better. And you never know what happens.”

JOLIET – Not much has gone right for the Joliet Slammers this season, so how about this for a positive?

The Slammers have a ninegame home stand at Silver Cross Field to conclude the Frontier League season.

The last stand got off on the wrong foot Tuesday night when the Florence Freedom scored a 6-1 victory. The Slammers were bidding to extend their winning streak to four games, which would have matched their longest of the season.

Before the game, manager Jeff Isom talked about how much more pleasant the game is when you get good starting pitching.

“We gave up two earned runs and 13 hits total in three games [at Windy City],” Isom said. “Finally, we pitched some ball. It was good to see the improvement.”

The trend continued early Tuesday as right-hander Andrew Strenge, making his second start and fifth appearance for Joliet (34-54), was strong through four innings. He faced one batter over the minimum in that time and was backed by two double plays on

Wood gets first win in 2 months

By MARK SCHMETZER The Associated Press CINCINNATI – Travis Wood pitched six innings of two-hit ball against his former team for his first win in two months, leading the Cubs to a 3-0 victory over Johnny Cueto and the Cincinnati Reds on Tuesday night.

Arismendy Alcantara hit a two-run shot and Anthony Rizzo connected for his 30th homer for the Cubs, who have won four in a row for the first time since June 30-

July 4.

Cincinnati was shut out for the 12th time this season. Cueto (15-8) struck out eight in 61/3 innings in his second straight loss after winning seven consecutive decisions.

Wood (8-11) struck out five and walked one in his first victory since he pitched eight innings in a 3-0 win at Philadelphia on June 15.

The left-hander, who made the All-Star team last season, was 0-6 with a 5.45 ERA in his previous 12 starts.

He improved to 2-5 with a 3.30 ERA in nine career starts against the Reds, who selected him in the second round of the 2005 draft.

Neil Ramirez struck out the side in the seventh, Pedro Strop pitched the eighth and Hector Rondon finished for his 22nd save.

Rizzo went deep with two out in the first, driving a 2-1 pitch into the seats in right.

The All-Star first baseman joined Miami’s Giancarlo Stanton as the only two National Leaguers with at least

30 home runs.

Starlin Castro, in his first game back from the bereavement list, followed with a single as the rain increased, forcing a 50-minute delay just five minutes into the game.

Alcantara followed Matt Szczur’s leadoff single in the seventh with his fifth homer of the season and second in two games.

FOOD ‘An aura that’s just magical’ Joliet Junior Woman’s Club to host dinner in cornfield at Siegel farm

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – When members from the Joliet Junior Woman’s Club approached Sue Siegel to discuss possible fundraiser options, Siegel knew the time had come.

For the past two years, the owners of Bloomsbury Farm in Iowa – Dave and Karen Peterson, Iowa farmer friends of Siegel – hosted an upscale “Cuisine in the Corn” event, which they repeated this year, Siegel said.

Enamored by its charm and success, Siegel couldn’t wait to host a similar but lower-key event at Siegel’s Cottonwood Farm in Lockport, which Siegel owns and operates with her husband, Paul.

The result is “Howl at the Moon: Cuisine in the Corn for a Cause,” a fundraising dinner served on tables lined up inside the farm’s corn maze. The length of that path, said Lauren McFarland, past president and event chair, depends on attendance that night, which she anticipates will be large. She surmises the row will be about 800 feet long.

McFarland, like Siegel, thinks the idea is a good one.

Proceeds will benefit organizations that help women and children, McFarland added.

“I’ve never been in a cornfield, much less ate in one,” McFarland said. “But I have been to a wedding on a farm, and it was one of the best weddings I had attended. It was so casual and relaxed; everyone enjoyed it so much.”

Studies suggest link between obesity and lack of sleep Dear Doctor K: I recently saw a headline that said children who sleep less weigh more. Is that true?

Dear Reader: I believe you’re referring to a study recently published in the medical journal Pediatrics. Researchers from Harvard-affiliated Massachusetts General Hospital for Children kept track of more than 1,000 children from the ages of 6 months to 7 years.

They asked mothers how much sleep their children got at the age of 6 months, 1 year, and then every year until the end of the study.

Between ages 7 and 8, researchers measured the children’s body fat and body mass index (BMI). They found that kids who were the most sleep-deprived were about 2 1/2 times as likely to be obese as those who consistently got enough sleep. They also scored higher on other measurements of body fat.

This study further confirms a link between sleep and weight.

Many previous studies have also shown that when children and adults don’t get enough sleep, it increases their risk of being overweight and having heart disease.

ASK DOCTOR K Anthony L. Komaroff These are the recommended daily amounts of sleep for young kids: 6 months to 2 years: 12 hours; 3 to 4 years: 10 hours; and 5 to 7 years: 9 hours.

Here are some ideas for improving the amount and quality of your child’s sleep: •Set and enforce a regular bedtime.

•Limit TV, especially before bedtime. The kind of light emitted by a TV can make it harder to fall asleep.

•Have soothing bedtime routines, such as bathing, quiet time and reading stories.

•Consider room-darkening curtains or a white-noise machine.

Why would sleeping less increase a child’s (or an adult’s) weight? We don’t know for sure that it does. But in recent years we’ve discovered some ways that it could. Most of the studies have been done with adults, not kids. In adults, experiments that restrict sleep to four to five hours each night lead to a fall in blood levels of the hormone

leptin.

Leptin travels in the blood, reaches the brain and has two effects. First, it decreases appetite. Second, it speeds up metabolism, which leads the body to burn more calories.

So lower-than-normal levels of leptin would increase appetite and cause the body to burn fewer calories.

Restricting sleep increases blood levels of another hormone, ghrelin. When it reaches the brain, it increases appetite – particularly an appetite for high-calorie foods.

Low blood levels of leptin and high blood levels of ghrelin are a kind of double whammy: They cause a person to consume more calories, and burn those calories less efficiently.

Sleep isn’t the only factor when it comes to childhood obesity. Along with making sure your children get enough sleep, make sure they are active for at least an hour a day. Limit sweetened drinks, and feed them a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Sometimes, to get a greater amount of inhalant more quickly into their systems, users place a plastic bag over their heads. This is successful but, unfortunately, the person loses consciousness and dies from a lack of oxygen.

Others die when their lungs are coated with inhalant and oxygen cannot penetrate the gooey film, causing death.

The safest way to get high is to enjoy nature, love your family and spend time with your friends who inspire you to reach your goals.

Any substance that causes a person to alter a normal behavior should be avoided.

It’s hard enough getting through this life when our brains are functioning properly. We don’t need to have our brains “shutting down” for any reason!

Brad Paisley’s country expands borders as good as it gets.”

He’s the closest country music has come to Norman Rockwell.

By CHRIS RICHARDS The Washington Post Country music is supposed to be about real life, and in real life, Brad Paisley is sipping Perrier.

Will we ever get to hear a Paisley lyric about French bubbles in little green bottles? This is a man who hung his star over Nashville singing about the perils of ticks, tanning beds and online dating.

So, yeah, maybe we will.

Nashville loves to agonize over what country music should and shouldn’t be, and that’s the tangled yarn ball Paisley’s been spinning on his finger for more than a decade. Of any country superstar working today, he’s the guy with the songs most intimately connected to the contemporary American experience – the blood, the sweat, the tears, the beers and everything else in the grocery bag.

He populates his lyric sheet with people who don’t normally appear in country songs, gilding their unfamiliar dramas in deeply familiar melodies.

Sometimes, there’s a political message.

More often, there’s a punch line.

“I defuse everything I can with it,” Paisley says. “Humor is such a great shield. You’re going to get flak if you tell the wrong joke, but it’s still the wrong joke. Give the wrong speech, you take it on the chin.”

That’s exactly where Paisley took it in April of last year when critics locked their ears on “Accidental Racist,” an earnest duet with rapper LL Cool J about racial healing that went wrong, then went viral. “I’m just a white man coming to you from the southland,” Paisley sings on the refrain, “trying to understand what it’s like not to be.”

The song was ridiculed by bloggers, blasted by critics, eviscerated by Stephen Colbert and parodied on “Saturday Night Live.” Then the great digital outrage machine did what it always does. It moved on to something else.

Paisley didn’t. “I’m still on a journey to learn this stuff,” the 41-year-old says, relaxing on his tour bus before a recent concert in Atlanta. “I want to hear what the professors and the pundits have to say. I had great conversations with a couple of people who were vocally upset, and I’m trying to learn what I can do better.”

As a songwriter, one of Paisley’s central themes has always been “taking pride in progress” – in America’s and, perhaps subconsciously, his own.

Accordingly, his 11th album, “Moonshine in the Trunk,” out this week, finds him bouncing back from contro-

He’s been on tour, giving the late country legend Roger Miller a run for his money as a guitarist and a cutup.

He’s been on television, serving as a judge on ABC’s latest singing game show, “Rising Star.” He’s been at home on his farm outside Nashville, soaking up time with his young sons, Huck and Jasper, and his wife, actress Kimberly Williams. And he’s been online, executing his own rogue publicity campaign, leaking songs from “Moonshine in the Trunk” on Twitter, one by one.

He calls the album “a Mason jar half-full” – which means lots of drinking songs and lots of optimism.

And while the album’s excessive sunshine might seem a little tone-deaf to anyone who’s been following the news this summer, Paisley is far from oblivious.

His music doesn’t just chronicle the America we live in. It envisions the America he wants to live in.

“Thinking, ‘Boy, are we blowing it, now’ – I don’t want to do that,” Paisley says. “I have two little boys. I want to say, ‘Here are the possibilities.’ This is the best time to be alive in the history of our country. And hopefully, this isn’t

The great art critic – and Music Row songwriting veteran – Dave Hickey had a terrific understanding of what Rockwell was really about.

“This is what [Rockwell] celebrates and insists upon: that ‘normal’ life, in this country, is not normal at all,” Hickey wrote in 1995, “that we all exist in a general state of social and physical equanimity that is unparalleled in the history of humans.” On Rockwell’s fundamental message, Hickey spelled it out: “Hey! People are different. Get used to it.”

Paisley, who embarked on his songwriting career immediately after graduating from Belmont University in Nashville in 1995, loves Rockwell, too – and he’s quick to volunteer a favorite image. He saw it hanging at George Lucas’s Skywalker Ranch: two janitors taking a break from mopping a theater to leaf through the playbill. “Love that one,” he says, blinking hard so he can see it on his eyelids.

It’s easy to imagine Paisley in a songwriting session, conjuring similar characters with his eyes clamped. He has a knack for singing from other perspectives, sometimes playing an opinionated narrator on the brink of a big realization.

On the new album, there’s “Gone Green” – a song penned by Paisley’s bassist, Kenny Lewis – in which a “redneck” reluctantly embraces environmentalism in a world that’s “done gone green.” On 2013’s “Those Crazy Christians,” Paisley sings from the position of a grouchy atheist willing to admit that, “If I ever really needed help, well, you know who I’d call is those crazy Christians.”

And all those ditties about the ups and downs and upside-downs of alcohol? They’re inspired by the sloshiness Paisley sees at his concerts. He doesn’t really drink.

And while the controversy over “Accidental Racist” raged almost completely outside of the country music world, it’s worth remembering that Paisley was sending that message to country fans, a bloc that’s overwhelmingly white and completely unaccustomed to being confronted with songs about race.

“I found incredible consolation in their reaction,” Paisley says, “which was, ‘Huh, I never thought about that.’”

Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer literacy is required. An Illinois Drinking Water Certificate and/or Wastewater Operator Certificate strongly desired.
