Two JJC board trustees resign Chairwoman Tina Markley says she faced public humiliation

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Two Joliet Junior College board trustees resigned at the beginning of Tuesday’s workshop meeting, leaving the rest of the board stunned and confused.

B o a r d Chairwoman Tina Markley and Trustee Barb Adams decided to quit but only Markley stated why. Tina Markley Now the board has three vacancies to fill after former Board Chairman Jeff May resigned in July for health Barb Adams reasons.

At the start of Tuesday’s meeting, Markley, who replaced May when he resigned,

said she was taken aback by the Aug. 11 board meeting.

At the meeting, trustees discussed ways to fill a board vacancy, as well as the board chair selection policy.

She said there was a “backdoor attempt” at public humiliation by trustees because she advanced from vice chairwoman to chairwoman, as outlined in state law and college board policy.

This caught her off guard, she said, because no trustee expressed concern about her ability to be chairwoman.

She said she had no idea becoming chairwoman would result in trustees publicly trying to remove her from the role instead of taking time to mentor and guide her.

“You see, in the professional arena that I work in, we come alongside our co-workers and help them learn and grow and help

them be successful,” Markley said. “We don’t sit and strategize on ways to try and beat people down.”

She also was appalled in the past few months that internal board politics became more important than serving students and the community.

After saying she had no desire to sit on a board where some trustees lacked integrity, decency and character, she announced her resignation. Trustee Adams followed suit with no explanation.

Both of them then left the board room, leaving the trustees present – Andy Mihelich, Robert Wunderlich and Michael O’Connell – stunned into silence.

After some nervous laughter, Board Attorney Todd Hayden said trustees were in a “unique spot” because the board lacked a quorum. The board is meant to have seven

Shorewood moves forward on TIF proposal around Route 52

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – Redevelopment of the Route 52 and Route 59 intersection may soon be aided by a tax-increment financing district.

Shorewood trustees Tuesday approved a Phase II consulting proposal with Kane, McKenna and Associates Inc. to proceed developing a plan to designate the intersection a tax-increment financing, or TIF, district.

A TIF district would allow the village to reinvest property taxes from within the district into the development or redevelopment of the district.

The result would hopefully increase the property values in the district and future taxes generated.

“We feel really confident we have the criteria to create a strong TIF district,” said Kane, McKenna and Associates rep-

resentative Mary Thompson.

Along with passing a referendum for home rule status to raise the village’s total sales tax so the village can fund a pipeline for Lake Michigan water, Mayor Rick Chapman stressed redevelopment of the Route 52 and Route 59 economic corridors in his State of the Village address.

Chapman was absent at Tuesday’s meeting, Trustee Dan Anderson ran the meeting. Anderson announced he will recuse himself from any vote or nonpublic discussion about the project because his family owns the plot of land on the northwest corner of the intersection, which likely would be in the boundaries of the district.

Trustee Barbara Kirkland also recused herself from a vote after village attorney Dan Silverman noted a property she owns could end up being in the district.

The area of the TIF district hasn’t been finalized, but Silverman estimated the district to span Route 59 around Route 52, west on Route 52 up to Shorewood Plaza and east on Route 52 to Interstate 55.

Most of the Village Board meeting Tuesday night centered around the qualifications of the village to designate a TIF district, and what a TIF district is.

Thompson explained to the Village Board a TIF district is one of the last true tools municipalities can leverage by themselves to grow economically. It can attract key development projects, is locally controlled and is flexible to pay many facets of development, including acquisition costs, infrastructure and consulting services.

Trustees had several questions about the TIF process, but were in general support of continuing the process.

“I find it appalling that two grown women who were voted by the community failed to serve the community in the capacity that they should have,” she said.

The board plans to have a special meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Will County Fair focuses on agriculture, family-friendly atmosphere More online

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com PEOTONE – With the Will County Fair opening Wednesday, fair President Ron Meyer is confident attendance will bounce back this year after dangerous, wet weather thwarted some of the festivities in 2014.

Beautiful weather is expected to coincide with what Meyer described as the “best fair in Illinois.” The fair runs through Sunday at the fairgrounds in Peotone.

“If we have good weather, we’ll have people coming through those gates,” Meyer said.

Attendance was down about 50 percent last year, he said, adding he hopes about 70,000 people attend this year’s five-day fair, with the most popular days being Saturday and Sunday.

As president of the Illinois Association of Agricultural Fairs, Meyer said he loves the Will County Fair because even though it’s evolved and grown over the years, it has stayed true to country roots.

This year’s theme is “Come Home to the Country.”

“Agriculture is the backbone of the county fair here,” Meyer said, adding fairgoers can enjoy the 4-H livestock auction, the rodeo, sheep shearing demonstrations and demolition derbies through the week.

He said fair organizers strive to keep the atmosphere family-friendly. There are carnival rides, a family entertainment tent, a pingpong ball drop competition for children, a chili cook-off, commercial exhibits and live music.

New this year is a kids power-wheel demolition derby.

The demolition derby show at the grandstand is “by far the most popular attraction,” Meyer said.

Fairgoers will find another tradition at the fair: Teresa’s – a Peotone-based frozen pizza company that’s been a vendor for more than 50 years.

Bob Nagel, who turned

over the family business to his son and nephews about four years ago, was at the fairgrounds Tuesday helping set up. Nagel said there are a lot of regulars who show up year after year for the company’s pizza slices.

“We certainly see a lot of the same people stopping in to say hello. We don’t really know if it’s for the pizza or to say hi,” Nagel said, laughing.

Meyer said although the fair did not have to cut any major events or attractions this year, county fair funding is in jeopardy at the state level because of proposed budget cuts and the impasse in Springfield. Gov. Bruce Rauner suspended some county fair funding earlier this year, but it’s next year that has Meyer worried.

“Some of the smaller fairs in Illinois that rely on state funding are not going to survive without that funding,” he said. “It will devastate some.

JJC Multipurpose Facility breaks ground

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Wayne King said he’s waited 30 years for a building like the Multipurpose Facility to come to Joliet Junior College.

King, who leads the college’s athletic department, was at the groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for the 80,836-square-foot structure.

The two-level building will feature two basketball courts, athletic competition space, portable batting cages, an indoor track, conditioning space, bleachers and athletic staff office space.

“I can’t wait to see it … start coming out of the ground,” said King, who’s also the school’s head baseball coach. “It’s going to be a huge plus for our athletes, our recruiting, for our coaches, for campuswide. Everybody coming out and using the facility.

It will be outstanding.”

College officials, students and local elected leaders also celebrated the groundbreaking of the facility because it will offer space for graduation.

“As you might know, if you have been to graduation, between 3,500 to 4,000 people attend and so it is very important to us to bring it back to campus for our families and our students,” Daniels said.

The Multipurpose Facility, along with the Romeoville campus expansion, are priority projects for the school’s Master Plan. College officials intend to fund the construction of both undertakings with a $45 million bond issuance and a $4 capital assessment fee increase.

tipurpose Facility should be completed by 2017.

Dominick Demonica, of Demonica Kemper Architects, who worked with the school on the project, said the facility will be a venue for major college events such as career fairs. He said it will also be a hub for community activities.

The facility will be an anchor for the west side of the main campus, he said.

Demonica said LEED certification will be pursued. Skylights will also be considered, he said.

College board trustee Michael O’Connell said he is excited to see the project progress and that it is overdue.

Trustees have invested a “great deal of modernization in the college’s infrastructure,” he said.

“This project is one of the final pieces of the puzzle for this campus,” he said.

He hoped those outside the school use it as well.

“We want to try to attract community members – thousands of community members – to come in and maybe rent this gymnasium for soccer, baseball, volleyball, basketball, things of that nature,” O’Connell said.

Joliet Memorial Stadium lights up

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The new lights at Joliet Memorial Stadium were used for a game for the first time Tuesday night.

The $300,000 light replacement project was done this summer and was funded with money approved by voters in a referendum in 2014.

Joliet Park District officials reported at a park board meeting Monday that the lights were

ready for use at a home game being played at the stadium Tuesday by the University of St. Francis men’s soccer team.

Some work still needs to be done. The transformer housed in a small brick building on the north end of the stadium, a familiar sight for stadiumgoers, is no longer needed and will eventually be demolished, officials said.

The light replacement was the first at Memorial Stadium since the early 1980s.

Second Potbelly planned near Louis Joliet Mall

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Construction is scheduled to start this fall on a 1.1-acre commercial development that will include a Potbelly Sandwich Shop near the Louis Joliet Mall.

Bradford Real Estate is developing the site now occupied by three houses in the 2500 block of Plainfield Road at Garden Street.

The developer plans to put three tenants in a 9,200-squarefoot commercial building, which will replace the three houses. The project will create a commercial link between Joliet Commons, the site of a new Dick’s Sporting Goods under

construction, and the Millennium Square strip mall to the east.

William Shank, with Bradford, said the plan is to start construction in October and open the development in late spring. An AT&T store is also planned for the site.

The Potbelly restaurant will be 2,400 square feet in size and similar in appearance to Joliet’s other Potbelly shop at 2613 W. Jefferson St., Shank told the Zoning Board of Appeals earlier this month. The board approved a variation that allows a sign identifying the drive-thru at the restaurant.

The other Potbelly opened in late 2014 and also is in a new commercial building.

I-80 ramp reopened after 6-vehicle crash

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The ramp onto westbound Interstate 80 from Houbolt Avenue was closed Tuesday morning after a traffic backup caused a six-vehicle crash.

The crash occurred at 7:44 a.m. Illinois State Police Master Sgt. Fred Rivera said no one was injured.

“Traffic was backed up on the interstate and the vehicles had to stop suddenly on the ramp and caused a chain reaction, but there was only [vehicle] damage,” he said.

One vehicle was towed from the scene and the others were able to drive away. The ramp was closed for about 30 minutes and traffic was slowed on the interstate by onlookers, Rivera said.

By SARWAT S. AHMAD Shaw Media correspondent NEW LENOX – New Lenox residents should by the middle of September have a new Village Board trustee to fill the seat recently vacated by Nancy Dye. Mayor Tim Baldermann said Monday that he and trustee Annette Bowden have interviewed 12 people for the position and a recommendation should be ready for consideration at the board’s Sept. 14 meeting.

“We had 12 very good people that came forward,” Baldermann said after Monday’s regular board meeting. “Their sole intention was wanting to be of service to the community.”

Dye announced her resignation last month after accepting the job of the village’s economic development coordinator, which was vacated in December by Nancy Hoehn. Dye will work under Assistant Village Administrator Robin Ellis.

Dye, who was re-elected in

April for a two-year term, was appointed to the board in 2002.

Baldermann also announced at the meeting that an alternate plan is in place regarding a proposal by T-Mobile to build a new cell tower on Will County property on Delaney Road east of Nelson Road.

T-Mobile recently filed a permit with the Will County Board to build a new tower on an unincorporated area in the proximity of the village’s Taylor Glen and Horizon Meadow subdivisions.

Residents called village trustees to express their opposition to the proposal, citing the possibility of the tower falling during inclement weather and of a reduction in property values, as well as health concerns, Baldermann said.

Since then, he and Will County Board member Ray Tuminello, formerly a village trustee, have approached T-Mobile with a proposal to instead lease water tower 1902, on the corner of Nelson Road and

Meadow Ridge Lane, to the cellphone service provider. The village also leases that tower to Verizon Wireless “The T-Mobile representatives have been very good, cooperative to work with – we are very close to having a deal,” Baldermann said.

As the village works on finalizing language for the contract and getting approval from the Federal Aviation Administration, T-Mobile will continue with the approval process from the county “in case there is a problem here,” Baldermann said.

Trustee Dave Smith thanked the mayor for coming up with an alternate plan because he had received “tons of calls from lots of people concerned about that.”

The management score on the report card is now 23 out of 25, compared to 13 in 2011.

Simelton said the improved scores have come at a time of tight finances. The authority has cut staff and exerted increased controls over its contractual costs.

“We had to make significant cuts over the years,” he said.

The authority now employs 45 workers, compared to 73 in 2011. Simelton has been CEO since Henry Morris was fired in 2012.

The authority is regulated

by HUD, but its board is appointed by the mayor of Joliet.

“From what I’ve seen since I’ve become mayor, I think they’re headed in the right direction,” Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk said. “I think Michael Simelton and his team are taking the steps they need to take.”

JOLIET – The Housing Authority of Joliet has announced it has reached “standard performer” status, which is a step up since federal regulators labeled it a “troubled agency” in 2012.

The authority has made improvements in management and finances in the past three years to get the status, CEO Michael Simelton said.

“Over a three-year period, we’re finally back to a standard performer,” he said. “In fact, we’re only two points from being a high performer.”

The authority received 88 out of 100 possible points on the latest Public Housing Assessment System report card from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com GRUNDY COUNTY – A Missouri man was killed Monday night after being involved in a crash where two semitrailers caught fire on Interstate 55 between Braceville and Gardner.

The crash occurred at 8:03 p.m., according to a news release from Illinois State Police District 5. David Lee Conway, 37, of Warrenton, Missouri, was pronounced dead at the scene at 8:55 p.m. by Grundy County Coroner John Callahan.

said Tuesday afternoon the crash occurred between milemarkers 229 and 230 and the district received assistance from 18 agencies as far north as Troy, east as Manhattan and south as Pontiac. Jensen said the Gardner district left its station at 8:06 p.m. and was at the scene until 12:35 a.m.

Illinois State Police District 5 conducted an investigation and accident reconstruction. The preliminary investigation indicated that after being stopped on the right shoulder of I-55 southbound, the first truck attempted to merge back into traffic.

At the same time, the second truck was traveling in the

40- to 50-foot flames were coming from the trucks. At that point the fire was elevated to a 211 alarm, Jensen said, which brought aid from other agencies. There were 15 fire apparatuses and three ambulances on scene.

Jensen estimated 10,000 to 15,000 gallons of water were used and responders successfully kept the flames from reaching nearby trees. The Elwood Tanker Task Force was on the scene to make sure their were no explosives, he said.

One semi was carrying food products and the other was carrying car parts, Jensen said. The northbound lanes were reopened at 12:15

a.m. and the southbound lanes remained closed for hours before they were reopened later, he said. Jensen did not know when the highway was fully reopened. “[Conway’s] tractor came apart and the driver was ejected while still seat belted in,” Callahan said in a news release from his office. “The remaining part of his tractor-trailer continued into the west ditch.”

Conway was found in his seat among the wreckage. He was a driver for 5 Star Logistics. Callahan said an examination will take place Tuesday and he will have more information Wednesday.

right lane approaching the location. The front of the second truck struck the rear of the first, causing both vehicles to lose control and become engulfed in flames as the units came to their final rest, according to the news release.

The driver of the first truck, Gregory Horne, 59, of Morton was transported to an area hospital and the driver of the second truck was pronounced dead on scene by Callahan. The Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate.

“This not only will change and make your community more attractive in bringing businesses in,” Scheller said.

“We’ll also invest in a retail store here and hire [local].”

Metronet has turned 19 municipalities across the country into “Gigabit” communities, Scheller said. The fiber optic cable would need to be installed on all the streets in

Plainfield, Village Administrator Brian Murphy said.

Trustees generally were in favor of the project. No action was taken Monday on the proposal.

The board also voiced support for annexing the Drum Farm property at Route 30 and Spangler Road, and the Boulevard property at Route 30 and Interstate 55. The two properties are in the potential tax increment financing district the village is pursuing along Route 30. No formal action was taken.

PLAINFIELD – Smoke and vapor shops, tattoo parlors and flea markets are among the business ventures that soon may need a public hearing before coming to Plainfield.

Village trustees discussed Monday adjusting the zoning ordinance to require several business types to be approved only with a special-use permit.

According to a staff report, there has been a proliferation of commercial enterprises along the Route 59 and Route 30 corridors.

Among those are fortune-telling services, tanning salons, child care facilities, massage therapists, auto supply stores, currency exchanges and used car sellers.

The special-use requirement means the village, with public input, could turn down a project if it is deemed to have a detrimental impact on adjacent land.

“Just because something is a special use doesn’t mean it can be arbitrarily denied,” board attorney Jim Harvey said. “What it means is that as a special use, you have legislatively determined it fits into a category. But because of special circumstances, it needs some special [consideration].”

Beauty salons, banks and car washes also were considered, but discussion with trustees led to staff removing the latter two uses from the list, and mulling removing beauty salons as well.

Trustee Bill Lamb said he was in favor of requiring special-use permits for all the business categories considered.

“It allows discussion on how it fits with the neighborhood,” he said.

Trustee Jim Racich supported the special use addition, and said he didn’t want Plainfield to look like Ogden Avenue in Naperville or Jefferson Street in Joliet.

Channahon Village Board OKs in possible hit-and-run zoning change despite objections

HILLSIDE – A Plainfield man was struck and killed Monday on Interstate 290 east at Wolf Road by an unknown vehicle, according to the Illinois State Police.

At 2:45 p.m. Monday, Lashawn D. Williams, 22, of Plainfield was on foot on the eastbound lane of I-290 when he was struck; it is unclear whether he was crossing the interstate or walking on the shoulder, Illinois State Police Sgt. Dominick Falcone said.

Williams’ vehicle was not at the scene. A preliminary investigation determined that he was likely struck by another vehicle,

Falcone said.

The Illinois State Police is classifying the incident as a hit-and-run until they can find more information on the circumstances leading up to the incident. Authorities are searching for whoever may have been involved, Falcone said.

Williams was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood where he was pronounced dead at 3:36 p.m. Monday. Next of kin have since been notified, according to Falcone.

The Cook County medical examiner is investigating, and police expect to use the findings to determine how Williams was struck, and what kind of vehicle may have been involved, Falcone said.

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent CHANNAHON – In a specially scheduled meeting, the Channahon Village Board this week unanimously agreed to rezone a residential property to bring it into compliance with village ordinance despite objection from a neighbor.

The 5-acre property at 24545 S. Ford Road has had a detached garage for some time even though it was zoned Residential-1, single-family residence, which does not allow detached garages. The property Monday evening was rezoned to Agricultural-2, rural residence, which does allow the structure.

It was a decision several weeks in the making, with dissent from the landowners to the south, Jeffrey and Tina Dames.

Monday, Tina Dames argued the property, owned by Dennis Bubinas, was in a flood plain and that state law did not allow buildings that contained hazard-

ous chemicals on flood plains.

She also said the garage never had a permit to begin with.

The week before, Jeffrey Dames told trustees the property should not be rezoned to A-2, because it would open the way for the owner to increase the size of the garage or even start raising farm animals on the land.

Bubinas said he didn’t have any hazardous chemicals in his garage and was not planning to raise farm animals or increase the footprint of the structure.

The zoning change was not initiated by Bubinas, village staff said after the meeting, but was the result of the village rezoning a string of properties with nonconforming detached garages. Nine other properties have been rezoned in the past year, said Director of Community Development Mike Petrick, although they were rezoned R-1 to R-2.

Channahon administrators said rezoning the Bubinas property to A-2 is appropriate to the

site.

Village Administrator Tom Durkin said an A-2 designation is fitting for a larger property.

The land is immediately south of an A-1 zoned parcel known as Lake Shokakana.

Zoning it as R-2, Durkin said, would leave it open to the option to subdivide and add more houses.

The Dameses said the rezoning of the property was brought up just after Village President Missey Schumacher was elected last April and that she is living on the site.

Schumacher recused herself from discussion on the matter and allowed trustee Sam Greco to preside over the vote. After the meeting, she said the issue was not a personal one and she had not exerted her influence in any way with village staff or other board members to rezone the property. Petrick said Schumacher had not approached him or used her influence to guide his decisions.

Reaves said he has asked the forest preserve Board of Commissioners to take a neutral stance by not allowing the annexation of its land.

Although the properties are not incorporated into Lemont, they receive services from the Lemont Police Department, Fire Protection District, Park District, Library District and school districts.

If annexed into Palos Park, the properties would be under the jurisdiction of the Palos Park Police Department, but remain in the districts for Lemont fire, parks and schools.

Reaves said village police would still respond to emergencies in that area if its officers are closest, but it would not be fair for the village to have to provide police services to an area that gives its tax revenues to another municipality.

Reaves also is concerned about potential commercial developments on the annexed land that could affect adjacent Lemont properties.

lleonecross@shawmedia.com HOMER GLEN – The Will County Health Department has reported its 13th confirmed case of wildlife rabies in 2015, tying last year’s record for most rabid bat cases.

A bat was trapped live Thursday in a Homer Glen residence on Parker Road with a butterfly net, and later confirmed to have rabies, according to a department news release.

Seven of the county’s 2015 confirmed rabid bat cases originated in Homer Glen. In early July, six bats in total were taken from a family’s attic and tested positive for rabies.

At least three dozen area residents have received post-exposure rabies treatments this year.

Will County Animal Control Administrator Lee Schild said in the release he’s “increasingly concerned about the number of rabid bats” found living inside homes.

“People who see bats flying around the eaves or chim-

ney of their homes should consider consulting with a wildlife exclusion specialist to determine whether the animals are gaining access into the residence,” Schild said in the release. “Bats inside a home represent a potentially dangerous situation which needs to be addressed immediately.”

Rabies is a virus transmitted to humans through the bite or scratch of an infected warm-blooded animal. The virus is almost always fatal if post-exposure treatment is not quickly administered.

Department spokesman Vic Reato said it’s impossible to predict whether there will be more cases this year.

“Considering this is only August ... there’s a pretty good likelihood that we’re going pass last year’s record,” Reato said. “Then again, you can’t predict Mother Nature.”

August and September are prime months for bat activity, health officials have said.

LEMONT – Lemont Mayor Brian Reaves called on residents who packed Monday’s Village Board meeting to voice their concern about Palos Park’s plans to annex land on the east side of Lemont Township.

According to the village, Palos Park has proposed to annex a piece of land owned by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. The annexation, because of its location, would allow Palos Park to also annex properties owned by Cog Hill Golf & Country Club, Gleneagles Country Club, Mid-Iron Golf Club and Ludwig Farm.

Reaves said that while the annexation would be legal, the move would make no sense because of the land’s proximity to Lemont and would work against the village’s long-term growth plan.

“It is a true misappropriation of what belongs in Lemont,” he said.

The landowners have negotiated annexation with Palos Park for years since talks broke off with Lemont.

Reaves said the owner of Ludwig Farms came to the village in 2010 with a proposed housing development for the property. Reaves, who was a trustee at the time, said the village rejected the proposal because it did not make sense in the housing market of the time.

The village has known since 2010 of Palos Park’s plans to annex the land and learned in July of the plan to annex the forest preserve land at McCarthy and Bell roads, Village Administrator George Schafer said.

Village Attorney Jeff Stein said a town is allowed to jump forest preserve land to annex property as long as it is the closest municipality to the unincorporated area. By annexing the forest preserve land near the eastern end of Lemont Township, Palos Park would be able to annex the adjacent properties.

MARY JANE BURNS Mary Jane Burns (nee Erickson), age 82, of Joliet, IL, passed away peacefully, Monday, August 24, 2015, at the University of Illinois at Chicago Hospital.

Born August 12, 1933, in Joliet to the late Mary Jane (nee Williams) and Fred Erickson, she was raised in Elwood, IL and had resided in Joliet all of her adult life.

Mary Jane received an Associates degree from Joliet Junior College and a bachelor degree from the University of St. Francis. She enjoyed a fulfilling career as an area educator, spanning over 50 years, with 40 of those years at Elwood Community School District and a decade at St. Joseph Catholic grade school in downtown Joliet.

Survived by her son, Dennis (Sherry) Burns; daughter, Jane Marie (Thomas) Wojcik; sisters-in-law, Ann Burns and Arminta Burns; brotherin-law Thomas Tyler; two nieces, Kathy, nee Rowan (late Wendell) Brockett and Jayne, nee Rowan (John) Ballun; one nephew, Thomas (Jackie) Tyler, Jr. Mary Jane was also the loving grandmother of Tom, Jillian, Ally, Stephanie and Brennan whom she adored immensely.

Preceded in death by her beloved husband of 54 years, Robert “Denny” Burns (2014); her parents; two sisters, Marjorie, nee Erickson (late Robert) Rowan and Carol (nee Erickson) Tyler; one brother, James Erickson.

Mary Jane’s love for teaching and guiding didn’t stop at retirement.

She embraced every opportunity to be a presence in the lives of her grandchildren and enjoyed the many bonds she held with former students.

Born October 28, 1941, to the late Norma (nee Lee) and Thomas Trevena in Joliet where she was raised and educated, a graduate of Joliet Central High School and Silver Cross Hospital School of Nursing.

Nancy was an honorably discharged U.S. Army Veteran. She retired from the Army Nurse Corps as a Lieutenant Colonel serving in Desert Storm, Grenada and Panama.

She was a member of the 801st Combat Support Hospital stationed at Ft. Sheridan, Illinois. She was a member of Evanston American Legion Post #42 and served as past commander for many years. Also served as past 7th District Commander of the American Legion. A member of Voiture 220 of the 40 and 8 Honor Society of the American Legion. She was employed for many years as a compassionate Registered Nurse specializing in trauma nursing. She found peace, tranquility and enjoyment in the art and practice of quilting and sewing.

She was preceded in death by Robert Sievert, (1976), her dear husband of 30 years; James Kaye (1985), loving husband of almost seven years; infant son and brothers, Thomas and Robert. Kay arrived in Joliet after high school to work at the Joliet Arsenal as a landmine inspector during WWII. After being a stay-at-home Mom, she worked as a bank teller at Louis Joliet & First Midwest banks. She volunteered at Cantigny Post fish-fries and bingo nights, as well as delivering Meals-on-Wheels in Plainfield. She always took time to chat with the shut-ins. She was an independent soul who tended her home and yard. She loved all dogs and adopted several rescues over the years.

The family wants to thank the caring nurses and staff at Presence Saint Joseph’s for their compassion and care, and Sharon and Julie for the angels, prayers, and care bear.

Budget report sees shrinking deficits, for now WASHINGTON – An unforeseen flood of revenue is shrinking federal deficits to the lowest level of President Barack Obama’s tenure, Congress’ nonpartisan budget adviser said Tuesday. But in a report that will fuel both parties in their autumn clash over spending, the analysts also warned that perilously high

shortfalls will roar back unless lawmakers act.

Two weeks before Congress returns from recess, the Congressional Budget Office said it expects this year’s federal deficit to fall to $426 billion.

That’s $60 billion less than it expected in March, thanks to greater-than-expected individual and corporate income tax collections, and less than a third of the record $1.4 trillion gap of 2009 as the government tried fighting off the Great Recession.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – A large Indiana oil refinery whose unplanned shutdown for repairs earlier this month caused gasoline prices to spike in the Great Lakes region restarted Tuesday, leading experts to predict a quick drop in prices.

BP issued a news release Tuesday saying it has safely restarted a large crude distillation unit at its refinery in Whiting, 15 miles southeast of Chicago. The unit had been shut down since Aug. 8 for unscheduled repair work. Gas prices were about $2.384 on Aug. 9.

“Retail prices across the Midwest had been moving lower already for the past seven days or so after that issue first caused a spike. Rauner, lawmakers focus on smaller items in budget mess

By JOHN O’CONNOR The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Illinois legislators and Gov. Bruce Rauner bickered over potholes, airplanes and other smaller-ticket items Tuesday as officials prepared to answer a contempt charge in federal court alleging the cash-strapped state missed a deadline to pay some service providers.

A court hearing was scheduled Wednesday for the state to explain why it missed an Aug. 21 deadline for a court-ordered payment for services to developmentally disabled residents living in community homes or larger facilities. The state comptroller reported that without a budget, the checking account has cash-flow problems.

But the focus Tuesday was on much smaller budget matters. The House spent the day working to reverse the Republican governor’s cuts to child care programs and to release $146 million in fuel tax money to help cities fill potholes – four-tenths of 1 percent of what the state usually spends annually. Also, the governor lauded a $2.5 million sale of surplus aircraft.

Rauner spokeswoman Catherine Kelly said the Legislature’s piecemeal spending approach represents Democrats’ attempt to “claw their way to a massive tax hike by hamstringing the state with an unbalanced budget.”

The state is ending its eighth week without a budget for the year that began July 1.

Rauner and Democrats who control the General Assembly have been unable to agree.

Democrats favor raising taxes to fill a multibillion-dollar hole. Rauner insists on first approving basic changes to make it easier for business to flourish and obliterate corruption to restore faith in politics.

But Comptroller Leslie Munger said Tuesday that, even with tax money continuing to come in, the cash flow is crimped. The state faced an Aug. 21 payment deadline for services for more than 10,000 developmentally disabled residents who need help with daily tasks while living in community homes or larger state facilities.

Munger spokesman Rich Carter said the state paid $71 million Tuesday to the organizations that run the community homes. But a lawyer representing the plaintiffs in the 2011 lawsuit settlement said the residence operators haven’t seen any money.

“If they don’t receive timely payment, many of them will have to close,” said Barry Taylor, a lawyer for Equip for Equality. “Our clients are placed in jeopardy.”

At the Capitol, House Democrats convened for a weekly session and took up a disputed child care program and motor-fuel tax disbursements to local governments.

Lawmakers took no action but heard testimony on both issues in a hearing before the

full House.

A committee sent to the floor a Senate-approved measure that restores funding for the child care program for working parents. With no budget to pay for it, Rauner imposed an emergency rule that severely restricted eligibility for the program – his administration acknowledged up to 90 percent of those who previously qualified no longer do.

Deputy Majority Leader Lou Lang, D-Skokie, brought up the Department of Human Services reassignment of Linda Saterfield, state child care administrator since 1998, after she testified before a legislative committee that the cuts would be “devastating.” DHS spokeswoman Veronica Vera said last week Saterfield was transferred for “internal personnel reasons.”

Democratic leadership introduced a measure authorizing the release of $146 million to city and county governments, the portion owed them from a 19-cents-a-gallon motor fuel tax. The state has collected $57 million since July 1 but had no appropriation authority to dispense it, officials said. Lawmakers took no vote on the proposal, which also included $120 million for child care services.

Illinois should get its students to stay here SPRINGFIELD – Illinois is experiencing a brain drain.

Just as adults are migrating to state’s with better business climates, so too are new high school graduates when they choose where to attend college.

In fact in 2013, 40 percent of new Illinois high school graduates who chose to attend public four-year universities went out of state.

And many never may return to live in the Land of Lincoln.

Each time this happens, we should ask ourselves: How did we let down our next generation?

Look no further than Eastern Illinois State University.

Enrollment at that school has dropped from 11,630 students in 2010 to 8,913 in 2014. That’s a 23 percent drop in only four years.

And the story doesn’t end there.

Enrollments also are down markedly at Western Illinois University in Macomb and at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale.

And in Urbana-Champaign, the University of Illinois has seen interest from in-state students plummet.

As I noted last week, according to university data, in 2006, 58 percent of Illinois students offered admission to the U of I attended.

In 2013, that number dropped to 45 percent.

This problem has caught the attention state Rep. Mark Batinick, R-Plainfield, a member of the House Higher Education Committee.

The primary reason students are choosing to study out of state is cost.

Often, once financial aid packages are factored in, it is less expensive for students to earn degrees elsewhere.

“The cost of doing business is high in Illinois,” Batinick said.

“The cost of liability insurance has gone up 1,000 percent over the last 20 years for the U of I. The cost of workers’ compensation has gone way up significantly for our state universities. And kids work part time on college campuses, and our

REEDER REPORT Scott Reeder minimum wage is higher than other states. All of these things make it more expensive for universities and businesses to operate in this state.”

And college in Illinois is expensive.

For example, if you are an engineering student entering the U of I this fall, you can plan to spend $35,340 a year for tuition, room and board and other expenses. That’s $141,360 for the degree – if you are able to graduate in four years.

But Batinick said tells only part of the story.

“There is a laundry list of mandates that are imposed on our universities that also make it more expensive for them,” he said.

And that, of course, jacks up tuition and means fewer dollars for financial aid.

And if you think Illinois universities are struggling to compete because the state doesn’t provide adequate funding for colleges, think again.

Illinois ranks third in the nation for its state spending for each fulltime university student, Batinick said.

Yep, he said, third.

And much of that money flowing to state universities is going to toward our state’s unsustainable pension system. Our state is in desperate need of pension reform.

Businesses – and workers – are leaving Illinois because of the state’s business climate. And now students are choosing to study out of state for the same reason.

Until Illinois addresses fundamental businesses issues, this migration of students and workers will continue.

Columnist Reeder continues attacks on workers’ rights

To the Editor: Scott Reeder began his column, “Illinois’ manufacturing base continues to decline,” that appeared July 29 in The Herald-News with the closing of the Mitsubishi plant in Normal – only to do a sleight-of-hand attack on workers’ compensation insurance in Illinois. He acknowledges the closing is not related to the main thrust of his attack.

The plant’s closing is a result of declining sales of Mitsubishi autos in the U.S. He quickly slides over to his usual attack on Illinois workers, this time workers’ compensation insurance.

As usual, he cites Indiana, a well-known workers paradise, as an example of places businesses from Illinois want to

move to. His constant comparison of Illinois workers to Indiana is unfair on many levels. Based on Bureau of Labor Statistics figures, Indiana pays its workers 27 percent less on average than Illinois workers, which lowers Indiana’s workers’ compensation costs.

Also from the BLS, Illinois ranks eighth in weekly wages versus Indiana, which ranks 35th. On workers’ compensation rates, in 2014, Illinois ranked seventh, with $2.35 per $100 in payroll. Indiana ranked 50th out of 51, with $1.06 per $100 in payroll.

Indiana also has a early-return-to-work program, which forces workers to return to work sooner, which could lead to reinjury.

If employers are concerned about workers’ compensation rates, one way they could save money would be to revamp their company’s health and safety regulations for the workplace to create a safer environment.

Reeder ends his column with another attack on bargaining fees paid by nonunion members of a bargaining unit, implying that elimination of those fees would make the state somehow more attractive to businesses. Gov. Bruce Rauner’s proposals on workers’ compensation seem designed to make Illinois like Indiana in regard to workers’ compensation. Along with his right-to-work aims, he wants to make Illinois the workers paradise that Indiana is.

After Jenna Diers competed in last year’s SouthWest Suburban Conference cross country preseason meet, she already realized that she faced a tough year because of a lack of training from an injury.

But after her victory Tues-

day in the event at Channahon Park with two teammates right behind her, the Lincoln-Way Central junior is thrilled about this season’s prospects for her and her teammates.

“Last year, I had a meniscus injury and couldn’t finish the last month of summer training,” Diers said. “I was a little worried last year. And then, looking at my time after this race, I knew I was in for

some big trouble. But now I’m feeling really good.

“We’re only missing two girls from last year’s top 10. We have a lot of experience with really good girls, and we’re really motivated to get PRs. The girls are very dedicated, and we put our all in every practice, so we’re going to do some good things this year.”

Diers posted a time of 18:55.8 to claim top honors,

while teammates Madison Smith (19:07.4) finished second and Kelly Robbins (19:08.0) was third. Also for the Knights, Dana Boucher (19:47.2) was eighth, and Gretchen Zirgaitis (20:14.2) took 15th.

Although coach Evon Schlotter retired after a hall of fame career at Lockport, the beat goes on with Erin Truesdale taking over after serving as Schlotter’s assistant for six years.

With five runners back from last year’s fifth-place state squad as well as a few talented newcomers, Truesdale believes the Porters should enjoy another fine season.

“We’re really just doing a lot of the same stuff – and why fix it if it’s not broken?” Truesdale said. “We have a lot of upperclass leadership from kids

Providence starts its season with tough loss

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The girls volleyball match was as close and as exciting as it could get, and that may not have been expected.

Providence started its season at home Tuesday against reigning Class 4A state champion Benet. The Celtics barely lost, 25-23, 26-24, and it would have been different if high school volleyball had the same rules as club.

In club ball, players can go into the net in certain situations and not be called. Nothing can touch the net in high school, however.

Because it was the first match of the year, the Celtics still need to work on the transition from club to high school.

Providence was called in the net nine times to Benet’s four.

Aside from that part of the game, Providence looked just as good.

“All I wanted from my team was to play hard and see where we were at, so when we got

back to the gym, we knew what we needed to work on,” Celtics coach Brie Isaacson said.

“I thought that we came out. I thought that we played hard, and we were down six in the first set and came back. To be honest, if we stayed out of the net, who knows what would’ve happened?

“We have a long way to go, but I am more than proud of what they did tonight. They were focused, the energy and the pursuit. I think that tonight was a great starting point.”

After trailing, 16-10, in the first set, Providence had dug itself a hole.

After siding out on a kill by senior Rachel Alles, Brenna Harper went up to serve. Junior middle Caitlin Stephens put the ball away to start the Celtics’ run. The Redwings had a double contact, then in the next two points, senior outside Anna Smagala and Stephens shut down the same hitter with a roof block. Harper stepped up to the line with all the momentum and served a rocket of an

ace to tighten the gap to 16-15.

In those few points, Providence proved it could battle back from a big deficit. Showing that at the beginning of the season is a good sign.

Also, showing they could hang with the defending Class 4A state champions is a testament to what the Celtics could do in Class 3A if they keep the same work ethic and competitiveness.

“I think that we came out strong. Benet is a great team,” Alles said. “They have great defense and great hitting, but I think that we put all our hard work into that game. From here on out, we need to just keep working and keep continuing to improve our defense, our blocking, our attacking and our all-around play.”

Even though there are areas that could improve aside from net violations – Alles cited shot placement and siding out quickly – Providence had a good showing from all its players.

cialists Katie Cummings and Harper passed consistently in system so the setters – Alles and junior Morgan Vanderway – could spread the offense and involve the middles in the attack.

Alles led the offense with eight kills. Junior outside Melissa Flynders and senior middle Katie Compagno each tallied five kills, while senior right-side Mary Poulos contributed four, Stephens three and Smagala two.

Smagala led with four block assists, while Stephens (one solo), Compagno and Poulos each tallied two.

“We did really well and I am really proud of how everyone played,” Boggetto said. “I thought that we came out really strong, and the second game was even better. I think we worked well as a team and everyone worked hard. All of our hard work paid off. I’m not upset at all with that loss because it showed we can hang up there with the top of the 4A teams and go far this season.”

“Sure, everyone made a mistake, but volleyball is a game of mistakes. We’re just going to clean up our side a little bit and work on some things in practice. Like coach said, we still have a lot to improve on, but we’re going to keep working, and that’s going to take us really far.”

The Celtics will have another opportunity to measure themselves against tough Class 4A teams. They will play in the Plainfield North Crosstown Showdown on Friday and Saturday. Providence took third in the tournament last year.

“We’re just going to come in, take care of business and, hopefully, play well,” Isaacson said. “I love that we are going to have two matches, then three matches. I’d love if we could play again right now so we could build on some of the stuff. 2014 Class 3A champion Wilmington focused on prepping for new season

By STEVE MILLAR WILMINGTON – For the first time in the program’s history, Wilmington enters a season as a defending state champion. But coach Jeff Reents said it has been business as usual in the preseason for the 2014 Class 3A state champion Wildcats.

“It hasn’t been too much different than any other year,” he said. “Once the preseason started, we were just focused on practicing hard. We definitely have a lot of momentum from last year, though, and there’s a lot of excitement.”

Six starters return from the 2014 team that went 14-0 and defeated Williamsville, 20-17, in the state championship game on Jordan Sarr’s last-second field goal.

The headliner among the group is senior running back Nick Hawkins, who ran for 1,115 yards and 13 touchdowns on 175 carries last season.

With the graduation of Nick McWilliams (1,348 yards, 23 TDs on 190 carries last season), Hawkins will be the go-to guy in 2015.

“When you have talent like (Hawkins), you want to use him as much as you can,” Reents said. “I think we have other guys who can step up and help out, too. I think we should be able to run the ball well.

That’s what we like to do.”

Junior Jeff Treadman will take over at quarterback in place of Mason Southall, who threw for 1,005 yards and 12 touchdowns last year.

Returning three starters on

the offensive line – senior center Ben Studer, senior tackle Bailey Boswell and junior guard R.J. VanDuyne – should help Treadman greatly.

Defensively, senior linebacker Jake Capwell and senior defensive back Ty Brimer are returning starters, while Reents also expects big things from junior defensive backs Owen Weaver and James Cox and junior defensive lineman Sam Jones.

With the limited number of returning starters, Reents knows others are champing at the bit for their chance to shine.

“We should have decent speed on defense, and we have guys ready to contribute,” he said. “I think we have a lot of guys who maybe didn’t get a lot of opportunities to play last year, but they were still on a state championship team and

With Wilmington coming off a state championship, some might think the bar has been set higher for the Wildcats, with anything short of another title a disappointment.

Reents, however, said the goals are the same as always.

“We always have the same goals,” he said. “We want to win a conference championship and get into the playoffs.

Once we get into the playoffs, it doesn’t matter what our regular-season record was.

We just want to get in and see what happens.”

A NEW BEGINNING

Borland, Bolingbrook stay focused after losing 19 starters to graduation

By DRAKE SKLEBA Shaw Media Correspondent BOLINGBROOK – New faces abound as the new football season begins at Bolingbrook.

Julian and Jared Huff (Minnesota), Micah Dew-Treadway (Notre Dame) Armani McNulty (Ball State) and 15 other 2014 Raiders starters graduated after compiling an 8-4 record. Coach John Ivlow welcomes back only three starters.

Senior linebacker Tuf Borland, one of the top high school linebackers in the country, will lead the way. The 6-foot2, 225-pound Borland, who will play for Urban Meyer at Ohio State, started a year ago, as did 220-pound defensive end TJ Lee and 250-pound center John Tyler Ivlow.

“We are very young but have a real fine group this year,” coach Ivlow said. “We will start a number of juniors from our sophomore championship team. We will find out how far we have come when we open at Glenbard West.

It’s a great program at West, which I understand is loaded again this year.”

“We lost a number of guys from last year’s team, but I’m really excited about our team,”

Borland said. “The sophomore team has been amazing as juniors and has really stepped up. I believe this will be the fastest defense we have had at Bolingbrook since I have been here. I’m looking forward to leading our team and help us all work hard to get better each day.”

Up front on the offensive line, sophomore Collin Wilson, juniors Matt Zulfer and Isaiah Sanchez and 300-pound senior Elliott English will join John Tyler Ivlow.

“Our offense will be a junior-led group,” Ivlow said. “I have been working with the group very hard in the offseason and in practice. We’re really coming along, and I’m confident that we will be successful.”

Junior quarterback Joe Coates looks to call signals for the Raiders, although senior Mike Freeze remains in the mix. Coates hooked up with now-junior Kendall Smith on a 47-yard touchdown pass on the final play to stun Homewood-Flossmoor in October and seize the SWSC Blue sophomore championship.

Former Morris coach Dan Darlington moves to the defensive side of the ball as coordinator for Ivlow. After last year’s tenure as offensive coordinator, the Morris legend is looking forward to the task.

“I’m really looking forward to taking over the defense,” Darlington said. “I have a number of young kids who are all great kids. They will do anything for you. I couldn’t be happier. As offensive coordinator, you are a more of a technician, where as a defensive coordinator, you can run wild, and I enjoy that style of coaching.”

Outside of Borland and Lee, the rest of the Raiders’ defense will be comprised largely of juniors. Izayah Green-May and Marmion transfer junior Lucas Warren will step in at linebacker with Borland. Dalen Winston, sophomore DeShaun Mallory and senior Demetrius Cristano will play in the line.

Senior David Garner and junior Josiah Purchase are leaders in the secondary.

“The juniors have been amazing, and I’m very confident we will have an outstanding defense,” Lee said. “Speed.

That’s what we base our defense on here at Bolingbrook.

The kids really can move. This is the third year I have been here, and as Tuf said, this will be the quickest defense we have had.”

Homewood-Flossmoor, which returns a number of starters from its state-runner

up team, is the overwhelming favorite to repeat as SWSC Blue champion. Lincoln-Way East and improved Lockport will challenge the Vikings. But don’t be surprised if the young guns from Bolingbrook are in the SWSC Blue race in late October.

“H-F is loaded, and Lincoln-Way East is always tough,” Ivlow said. “Lockport should be much improved. Although we will be very inexperienced, I expect us to compete for a SWSC Blue title.”

“I want nothing less than a Class 8A state championship, “ Borland said. “I also want to help our young team be the best we can be and – for me, personally – to be the best player I can be.”

“I do not want to lose in 2015,” Lee added. “An undefeated state championship season, and personally, I would like to lead the state in quarterback sacks.”

“One game at a time. We want to beat Glenbard West on the 28th,” John Tyler Ivlow said. “A conference championship and then a state championship. Personally, I would like to have a great season and get a scholarship somewhere and continue to play football in college.”

Joliet falls to Schaumburg

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After sweeping a series over the weekend at Lake Erie, the Joliet Slammers were hoping to continue that type of success against Schaumburg on Tuesday.

Things looked promising after the Slammers jumped out to a 2-0 lead through three innings, but the Boomers evened the score an inning later and then took control with a three-run sixth to claim a 6-4 Frontier League victory at Silver Cross Field.

In Joliet’s third, Phil Bates led off with a single, and Alfredo Rodriguez (2 for 5) followed with a double. Jeremy Nowak drove in a run with an infield out, and Mike Garza singled in a run to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage.

But Schaumburg tied the score in the fourth and moved in front for good with a run in the fifth.

Salad makes most of vegetable glut

A

t the end of the summer, we all are awash in corn, zucchini and tomatoes.

This is, by and large, a good thing.

But it begs for a bit of creativity in the kitchen so the end-of-summer vegetables don’t mount up and threaten to overtake us.

If you are growing any of these items in a garden, you really need an arsenal of recipes to keep the influx at bay. Even if you don’t have a garden, these items are plentiful at the farmers markets and supermarkets; and as summer starts to ebb, we all want as much of this produce as we can get.

Soon we’ll be reminiscing about ripe, red toma-

toes; plump, sweet corn; and firm zucchini with their emerald skins. But for now, they are ours for the eating.

This Cobb salad has chickpeas and eggs as the main proteins, and the traditional bacon as well, which could be left out if it’s not your thing. You could, of course, add a row of cooked cubed or shredded chicken or cooked shrimp, or substitute it for the chickpeas.

Most of us think of zucchini as a vegetable to be cooked, but if you get small, very firm zucchini, they are lovely shredded, diced or peeled into ribbons and eaten raw.

For better bacon, bake!

For this recipe, you are welcome to cook bacon the old-fashioned way on the stovetop, or you can bake it in a 350 degrees F. oven on a wire rack inserted into a rimmed baking sheet for about 15 minutes, or until crispy. Baking it is neater, less splattery, less hands on.

For the dressing: ½ cup buttermilk, shaken 2 tablespoons sour cream or plain Greek yogurt 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard 2 teaspoons white wine vinegar 2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil 1 teaspoon chopped fresh thyme leaves ½ teaspoon minced garlic Kosher salt and ground black pepper For the salad: 5 cups thinly sliced romaine lettuce (or a combination of iceberg and romaine, for more crunch) 8 slices bacon, cooked and roughly crumbled 3 hard-boiled eggs, peeled and diced large 1 pint (2 cups) cherry tomatoes, halved (or 2 cups diced larger tomatoes) 2 cups lightly cooked corn kernels 2 cups diced zucchini 15½-ounce can chickpeas, drained and rinsed ½ cup thinly sliced red onion ½ cup crumbled feta cheese Ground black pepper To prepare the dressing, in a small container or jar with a lid, combine the buttermilk, sour cream or yogurt, mustard, vinegar, olive oil, thyme, garlic and a hefty pinch each of salt and pepper.

Shake well. Can be refrigerated for up to 5 days. Shake before using.

To prepare the salad, spread the lettuce evenly over a large serving platter or shallow bowl. On top of the lettuce, make nice neat rows of the crumbled bacon, eggs, tomatoes, corn, zucchini, chickpeas, onion and feta. (The order is of no consequence, whatever strikes you.) Season with pepper, then drizzle with a bit of dressing and serve the rest on the side.

While you muse on that, let’s turn to this deal. South gets into six spades.

How should he play after West leads the club queen?

In the auction, I agree with South’s opening bid. Despite the lack of a club stopper, the hand contains 20 prime points with eight control points (counting two for each ace and one for each king).

A typical two-no-trump opening has only seven control points.

North made a transfer bid, over which South’s four-diamond rebid (a superaccept) indicated at least fourcard spade support and the diamond ace while denying the club ace. North repeated the transfer to make South the declarer, then bid what he thought his partner could make.

Mirror distribution – each partner having the same hand shape – is usually troublesome.

This deal is no exception. With an unavoidable club loser, it looks as though declarer must work out which opponent has the diamond queen – but not if he knows about elimination and endplay.

South wins with dummy’s club ace, draws trumps, cashes his heart winners, and exits with his last club.

Whichever opponent takes the trick must either lead a diamond, finding the queen, or concede a ruff-and-sluff.

Finally, back to the coin-toss question. In theory, it is still 50-50, but you should bet tails. It is highly likely that the coin is imperfect and more likely to land tails. ******

on arteries that could be opened just as well by angioplasty prolonged the time of surgery, and the potential for complications from surgery and anesthesia.

The new hybrid procedure seeks to achieve the best of both angioplasty and surgery: It uses surgery when a blockage occurs in the biggest artery that supplies blood to the heart, the left anterior descending (LAD) artery.

The surgery on that artery is minimally invasive. It requires only a small incision in the chest (not cutting through the breastbone).

The heart is left beating; no heart-lung machine (with its potential complications) is needed.

The artery used for the bypass is an artery in the chest called the left internal mammary artery (LIMA). This restores blood flow to the LAD for many years, longer than when veins are used or when angioplasty opens the LAD blockage.

The other blocked arteries are then opened via angioplasty, either immediately following the bypass or within the next day or two. (I’ve put an illustration of the hybrid procedure on my website, askdoctork. com.)

The new hybrid approach has not been proven to be superior in any way to traditional CABG. However, several good studies have found that it is not inferior.

And since it involves less surgery and allows a faster recovery, this may make it preferable.

Dear Readers: In yesterday’s column, a reader asked why a friend had undergone both bypass surgery and an angioplasty to restore blood flow to the heart. The reader had thought that a person had either one or the other, but not both. I replied that this has been the case until recently: When one or more blocked arteries were discovered, cardiologists and cardiac surgeons had traditionally decided whether to do one procedure or the other.

However, a new hybrid approach is gaining favor. It makes sense only for some patients – and it sounds as if the reader’s friend is one of those patients. In yesterday’s column, I explained both angioplasty with stenting and coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery.

With that groundwork, let me explain the thinking behind the new hybrid approach: Angioplasty cannot reach and open all blockages of the heart’s arteries. For example, it can’t open blockages that extend a long distance in the artery or that are located at a fork of the artery. Significant blockages that can’t be opened by angioplasty need bypass surgery.

However, when arteries can be opened by an angioplasty using the latest types of stents (called drug-eluting stents), the long-term results are very good. And angioplasty is far easier to endure than CABG: It doesn’t require general anesthesia, causes fewer complications and has a shorter recovery time.

Traditionally, in people with multiple blocked arteries, if CABG had to be done for one artery, the surgeons often performed bypass surgery on the other blocked arteries as well, while the chest was opened.
