Volunteer gets probation for embezzling thousands Romeoville church, pastor support plea deal

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A volunteer treasurer was sentenced Monday to four years probation for embezzling thousands of dollars from a Romeoville church.

Deborah Suchomel, 52, pleaded guilty to one count of theft in May. On Monday, she brought a check to court for $26,987.26 in restitution to the church – the amount of misappropriated money that could be proven by audits, said Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Chris Messina.

Police previously estimated Suchomel took more than $106,000 while serving as council secretary and preschool bookkeeper for Good Shepherd Lutheran Church between October 2005 and April 2013.

Judge Carla Alessio-Policandriotes also banned Suchomel from any contact with Good Shepherd, assigned her $7,000 bond to be used for court and probation

costs, and ordered her to complete 480 hours of community service.

“The defendant must notify any nonprofit group [she approaches for community service] up front that she has been convicted of theft from a nonprofit. I’m not going to set up another victim here,” Alessio-Policandriotes said.

“I’m so sorry. I’m just sorry,” Suchomel sobbed before she was sentenced.

The Rev. Suzanne Anderson-Hurdle said she and her

congregation supported the plea deal so they can move on from “the betrayal” by her one-time close friend.

Suchomel had written checks to herself for cash, and the embezzlement was discovered after the IRS contacted the church about unpaid taxes.

“I was led to believe it was limited to the preschool, but [it turned out to be] all our financial accounts, including some that had been closed for several years,” Anderson-Hurdle said.

Anderson-Hurdle, Good Shepherd pastor for 17 years, said dealing with the investigation, financial problems and betrayal has caused her to neglect other areas of her ministry.

“The strain made me pray over taking a leave of ministry. I trust people less. I trust my instincts less. I question what I know about my church, my faith, my God,” Anderson-Hurdle said.

“The outlook our church will survive is not good,” she told Alessio-Policandriotes.

Will County residents indicted in $650,000 donor scheme The HERALD–NEWS news@theherald-news.com CHICAGO – Three Will County residents have been indicted on charges they defrauded a nonprofit organ and tissue donation network of more than $650,000.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago said Shari L. Hansen, 41, was the auditing coordinator for an Elmhurst-based organ procurement organization and was responsible for reviewing and approving invoices from contracted physicians.

Eric V. Murff, 37, of Plainfield, and Debra A. Schultz, 43, of Lockport, received proceeds from phony invoices and shared the money with Hansen, according to a news release.

Hansen was charged with six counts of wire fraud, and Murff and Schultz were each charged with three counts of wire fraud, in a six-count indictment that was returned Thursday by a federal grand jury.

Between March 2008 and April 2010, phony invoices were submitted to the un-

identified organization for organ and tissue procurement work. Murff, or a relative of Schultz, were identified as the doctors who performed services, though neither are physicians. Schultz’s relative is not facing charges, according to the indictment.

Hansen allegedly authorized payments made with checks that were deposited into accounts controlled by Murff and Schultz, according to the news release.

Wire fraud carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

QUICK NEWS State providing funding for canal project GIBSON CITY – Gov. Pat Quinn announced last week capital investments of more than $1.6 million for construction projects in several counties, including Grundy and Will.

The projects aim to create jobs and improve transportation safety and efficiency, according to a news release from Quinn’s office, and are funded by the Illinois Jobs Now! construction program. The projects will be managed by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

In Grundy, LaSalle and Will counties, the Illinois and Michigan Canal will receive 138 historical markers and wayfinding signs from the city of LaSalle to the village of Romeoville for $53,684 by Western Remac Inc. of Woodridge, the lowest of four bidders.

Funding also will go toward pavement patching on Interstate 55 between McLean County line and Grundy County line for $460,950 by G. M. Sipes Construction Inc. of Rushville.

If all goes well, the person who offered to buy their home in Joliet will finalize the deal this week.

“Everything is moving really quickly,” said LaVette, 38.

Her experience is reflective of a relatively brisk housing market in Will County, which has led the Chicago region in home sales.

In Will County, median home prices – while increasing – remain affordable. Homes are selling faster. And distressed homes, meaning short sales and foreclosures, continue to make up a smaller share of the market.

All are clear indicators of a healthier housing market, said John Greuling, president and CEO for Will County Center for Economic Development.

“As the economy evens out and gets better, there’s more people working,” Greuling said. “I think previously the people who wanted to buy a house or build a house but didn’t have a job or were uncertain about job security, I think they’re feeling more optimistic.

“We have a lot of young communities,” he added.

“We’ve got new schools that have been built over the last 15 years. I think the biggest benefit is that the taxes tend to be a little less out here.”

There also is a growing pool of buyers eager to become homeowners again after losing their homes years ago because of medical or financial issues, he said.

Only DuPage County experienced a similar reduction over that same time period.

At the same time, Will led the way in home sales in the first five months of 2014, with a 6 percent increase versus the year earlier, while the rest of the region saw declines, according to MRED data.

Those numbers paint a

clearer picture of the housing market here, said Karen Robertson, president of the Three Rivers Association of Realtors and a Coldwell Banker agent in Plainfield.

Healthier market While overall inventory remains slightly higher in Will than in other counties, inventory has gone significantly down since the 2008 crash in the housing market, Robertson said.

But what’s causing Will County to be the hottest in the region this year for home sales?

People continue to see Will County as a good place to live, work and go to school when compared with more costly communities in Chicago or Cook County, Robertson said.

Midday storm breaks the heat, does some damage

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com Houses in Joliet and Braidwood were struck by lightning, and South Chicago Street was blocked by a fallen tree following a late-summer storm Monday on one of the hotter days of the year.

An unoccupied house at 707 W. Main St. in Braidwood was struck by lightning during the storm. Fire Chief Ken Heberer said firefighters were on the scene for about two hours battling a fire in the roof. He estimated damage at about $70,000.

Lightning struck houses in the 2200 block of Riverside Drive and the 3000 block of Sanctuary Lane, although neither sustained much damage, said Battalion Chief Jeff Carey of the Joliet Fire Department.

South Chicago Street was blocked by a tree knocked down at Wallace Street.

“The tree fell on an occupied car,” Carey said. “The woman who was driving said she saw it falling but couldn’t beat it.”

Carey said the department had 35 to 40 calls about downed trees or wires, mostly from an area east of Midland Avenue, south of Jefferson Street, north of Interstate 80 and west

of Richards Street.

Elsewhere: • A tree was hit by lightning in Shorewood, although not severely damaged, according to a Troy Fire Protection District official.

• Signage was reported

down on Houbolt Road and McDonough Street in Joliet.

The 45-minute storm also brought down midday temperatures in Joliet from a high of 88 into the lower 70s by 3 p.m.

Hot, humid conditions with temperatures in the lower to

middle 90s had been forecast throughout the region Monday, with heat indexes – the perceived temperature – between 98 and 104 degrees for the Joliet area, and between 105 to 109 degrees for points south, including Grundy County.

Humid conditions Monday generated the highest heat indexes recorded so far this year, said Matt Friedlein, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Romeoville.

“It’s the most humid air we’ve had all summer,” Friedlein said. “The dew point is one of the highest in the country, comparable to Miami, New Orleans and Houston.”

The dew point in Morris at 9 a.m. Monday was 78, a point higher than Miami or New Orleans, according to the National Weather Service.

The National Weather Service forecasts a chance of storms each day through Friday, with a high Tuesday of 86 degrees, Wednesday and Thursday of 79, and Friday of 82.

2-year-old alerts mother to Joliet fire early Monday

A pile of charred debris is all that remains of a home at 2006 Capri St. following an early morning fire.

Officials say a 2-year-old child awoke her mother, who was able to safely evacuate the home with all three of her children. Heat from the fire melted siding on a nearby garage, as well damaged a car and a nearby home.

JOLIET – A 2-year-old girl woke her mother and two sisters in time to escape a fire that destroyed their Capri Avenue home early Monday.

“The little girl woke up her mom, and then [the mom] got the two other girls out and came to my house,” next-door neighbor Norma Arciniega said. Arciniega then called 911.

Battalion Chief Jeff Carey said the girl woke about 12:45 a.m. and alerted her mother to smoke and flames inside the one-story house at 2006 Capri St. The occupants got out before firefighters arrived to see “heavy fire on the front and

side of the house,” Carey said.

“The flames were taller than the trees,” Arciniega said. “It was really bad. It just consumed everything.”

The woman, who was identified as Tanesha Trotter, was examined by paramedics for smoke inhalation but was not hospitalized, Carey said. The children – ages 11, 7 and 2 – all escaped without injury.

On Monday morning, nothing remained of the home but a pile of charred debris.

The fire was so hot that it damaged siding on a house to the east, as well as a garage and automobile at a residence to the west.

Fire reports indicate the fire started in the kitchen.

“Small houses like this go up pretty quickly,” Carey said.

Skate park owners ask for less regulation

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – An owner of a New Lenox skate park came into conflict with village officials on Monday over hours of operation and permit fees.

At a Village Board meeting, Kevin McCullough, co-owner of Drop In Skate Park, 899 Country Creek Drive, asked village officials to waive special-use permit fees and also asked why skate park hours needed regulation. He said the regulations were not stated in any paperwork or meetings.

He said he did not know of the hour requirements until he was told he violated the special-use permit for the skate park.

“Why [does] the government think it necessary to interfere with a free enterprise that way?” he said.

McCullough, who runs the skate park with his son, Paul, had issues with village officials in the past when they were told they could not run a summer camp in an industrial zone the park is located in. The camp would be considered a day care under zoning rules, which is not permitted.

He also had issues with the hours of the skate park because the village required it to close at 10 p.m. instead of midnight. The hours were stipulated in the special-use permit approved by board members earlier this year, village officials said.

However, the village made a clerical error by not sending McCullough the special-use permit and he was unaware of the hours listed on it, said Mayor Tim Baldermann on Monday. He said McCullough had detailed the hours of the skate park to the village.

“Those are actually the hard costs that are spent by the village ... we can’t ask the taxpayers to fund someone else’s private enterprise.”

Because of the error, village officials decided to let the skate park operate at a later time as another permit would be considered. Village officials also decided to waive $500 of the special-use permit review fees, leaving McCullough $350 to pay. Baldermann said those fees would not be waived.

“Those are actually the hard costs that are spent by the village … we can’t ask the taxpayers to fund someone else’s private enterprise,” he said.

He also said the village needs to regulate business hours because of policing and neighborhood concerns.

Judge: Statements made

by Gempel cannot be used

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The statements a Crest Hill man gave to police after being arrested for allegedly murdering his 89-yearold neighbor cannot be used at his trial.

Judge Robert Livas decided Monday that nothing during the time in November 2012 that Bruce Gempel spent in custody before being brought to court gave investigators justification to keep questioning him.

“First, the police arrest him without probable cause.

They deny his right to attorney three times and ignore the two times he asked to leave,” Livas said. “There’s no doubt in my mind the moment he walked in for the interview and they ignore his requests,

he’s not leaving that [police] station.”

Prosecutors have said Gempel, after being held for about 12 hours after his first interview with police, asked to speak with another officer and confessed to slaying Dorothy Dumyahn.

On Nov. Bruce 18, 2012, an off-duty fireGempel fighter passed

by Dumyahn’s house in the 2300 block of Caton Farm and saw smoke.

The firefighter forced the door open and brought the 89-yearold woman outside to discover she was already dead.

Dumyahn had been stabbed 20 times, according to police.

Police said Dumyahn’s

next-door neighbor Gempel, 50, had unexplained scratches on his face. While Gempel was being held by police, the DNA found under Dumyahn’s fingernails was identified as that of a male.

“They had reasonable suspicion, sure, but nothing was presented [to elevate] that to probable cause,” Livas decided.

Gempel remains in the county jail on $1 million bond while facing murder and arson charges. Other evidence, including DNA results, have yet to be discussed in pretrial hearings.

Will County Public Defender Frank Astrella said he expects the state’s attorney’s office will file to have Livas’ decision overturned by the appellate court before the case is brought to trial.

Buffalo Wild Wings Village Board members considered two variances for the new Buffalo Wild Wings restaurant at the Nelson Plaza near Nelson Road. The restaurant needed adjustments in parking spaces in the plaza, while also needing logo signs on the building walls facing Nelson Road and U.S. Route 30. The restaurant may open in the village in January.

“I think they’re going to have a nice crowd … it’s going to be a great destination,” said Board Trustee Ray Tuminello.

Morsovillo is the founder of Operation Welcome You Home, the organization that holds the Wounded Warrior 5K run.

“The first year, we donated to the Wounded Warrior Project,” she said. “But after that, we decided to focus our support on local veterans.”

The more than $45,000 raised from the event will provide veterans wounded in service with

special needs equipment, regular items veterans need and even funeral expenses for families. None of the money goes to organizations.

Wounded veterans that attended also received monetary tokens of appreciation.

Morsovillo said the participation cap doesn’t mean people can’t still donate to the cause.

Not all registrants attend the event and people from other states – including Maryland, New York and Wisconsin – register.

“We’re hoping to exceed what we did this year,” she said. She anticipates registration for next year’s race to open Sept. 28.

“We’re very proud of how our organization has grown supporting our local heroes,” she said.

PLAINFIELD – The annual Wounded Warrior 5K race has become such a popular fundraiser in Plainfield that officials are capping registration for next year’s race because of safety concerns.

Race registration has nearly doubled every year since the event was founded in 2012. The last race, on May 24, attracted a little more than 1,400 participants, according to co-organizer Donna Morsovillo.

The Village Board voted Aug. 11 to cap the number of participants at 1,200 for the next race, scheduled for May 23.

“We didn’t think it would grow as rapidly as it did,” Morsovillo said. “Safety is our main concern.”

Police Chief John Konopek told the Village Board that while the race ran well, there were several safety concerns.

Konopek said parking was an issue because, for every participant running, there were two to three people who came to watch. He said there were thousands of people at the race.

“It was not only a parking problem. It was also just the number of runners themselves,” Konopek said.

Runners in the main pack had to maneuver around cars to get through the course. And the biggest concern was fitting all the runners at the starting line in Settler’s Park.

Group offers advice on how to get on the ballot

The discussion is scheduled for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the large meeting room of the library, 15025 S. Illinois St., and covers procedures for filing petitions both for candidates and citizens interested in put-

ting referendums on the ballot.

The forum also will cover how to challenge petitions and defend against petition challenges.

The Citizen Advocacy Center is an Elmhurst-based, nonprofit and non-partisan organization that aims to strengthen democracy by reviewing local government and spreading public awareness.

Wilmington man dies from accident injuries

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – An 87-yearold Wilmington man died Sunday from injuries he sustained in a traffic accident last week.

The Will County Coroner’s office reported Marion Hines was pronounced dead at 7:07 p.m. in the intensive care unit of Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

State police initially listed Hines’ injuries as minor following the crash about 10:40

a.m. Wednesday at Route 53 and West Manhattan Road in Elwood.

According to police reports, Hines was driving a 2013 Cadillac XTS when he ran a red light and was T-boned by a 2000 GMC Safari driven by a 48-year-old Elwood woman. The other driver was not injured.

The Will County Coroner’s office said the cause of Hines’ death will be determined after medical history, toxicology results and crash reports are reviewed.

to issues stemming from the votes of three commissioners, two of whom ran uncontested in the spring 2013 elections.

Other candidates were thrown off the park district ballot after their petitions were challenged. Several other Plainfield boards – including the library, school district and village board – saw people lose ballot spots after their petitions were challenged.

“In the last election cycle in our community, there was too much of that,” Polito said.

“Sometimes people just don’t know the rules. Sometimes they make mistakes. Or they weren’t aware they could defend a challenge.”

Polito said people considering circulating a petition, or who have a completed petition, can get professional advice from a Citizen Advocacy Center lawyer before or after the event.

“You’re going to start seeing people circulate petitions for the spring elections very soon,” Polito said.

QUICK NEWS Police alliance to begin annual phone solicitation MINOOKA – Minooka Police are informing residents that the Metropolitan Alliance of Police, which represents the department’s officers for the purpose of collective bargaining and other legal services, will soon begin its annual telephone solicitation.

People making the calls are not members of the Minooka Police Department, as telephone solicitations for money from this department is prohibited, according to a news release from Chief Justin Meyer.

Those making the calls represent MAP, and the donations will fund the services that MAP

The center is an administrator for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, which provides assistance on winter heating bills to income-eligible households.

Starting Sept. 2, LIHEAP applications can be submitted by households with a family member who is 60 and older or a member who is receiving Social Security disability pay-

ments.

Starting Oct. 1, applications can be made by households with one of the following conditions: a heating system that does not work or has been redtagged by the utility company; disconnected service because of non-payment; a child under the age of 6.

Starting Nov. 3, the program is available to households that meet the income requirements.

Charles E. Thomas, age 61, of Joliet, passed away Saturday, August 23, 2014, at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home surrounded by his loving family.

Born October 30, 1952, in Joliet, he was the son of the late Edward and Charlene (nee Brusatori) Thomas. He was a graduate of St. Patrick Grade School, Joliet Catholic High School, and Northern Illinois University.

He received his law degree from Washington University School of Law, and served as both a prosecutor for 14 years for the Will County States Attorney, and an Attorney in private practice for many years.

Chuck was a devoted husband and a loving father. He was an avid Cubs fan and will be remembered for his extensive baseball card collection.

Lauren Marie Balsie, age 31, passed away Monday, August 18, 2014, in High Point, NC, unexpectedly as a result of an accident.

Lauren was born March 11, 1983, in Joliet, IL to Robert William and Mary (Poli) Balsie.

Survived by her parents; grandmother, Marie Ann Balsie; Godmother, Joann Poli; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins; and her beloved cat Jezabel.

Lauren was passionate about dance. She studied dance at Columbia University, Chicago and was an accomplished ballroom, contemporary, jazz, and ballet dancer. She earned her Bachelors Degree in 2006 from Loyola University Chicago in Political Science; her Masters Degree in 2010 from Grand Canyon University in Elementary Education and was currently pursuing a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction at Concordia University Portland.

She was employed with Guilford County Schools as a 4th grade teacher at Triangle Lake Montessori in High Point, NC. Lauren was a creative, loving and strong willed young woman and will be greatly missed.

A memorial visitation will be held Tuesday, August 26, 2014, from 2-7 p.m. at Blackburn-Giegerich-Sonntag Funeral Home.

He was a member of the Lockport Moose and coached Lockport Little League Baseball for many years.

Pediatricians’ Rx for schools: Later start times

CHICAGO – Pediatricians have a new prescription for schools: later start times for teens.

Delaying the start of the school day until at least 8:30 a.m. would help curb their lack of sleep, which has been linked with poor health, bad grades, car crashes and other problems, the American Academy of Pediatrics said in a new policy.

The influential group said teens are especially at risk; for them, “chronic sleep loss has increasingly become the norm.”

Studies have found that most U.S. students in middle school and high school don’t get the recommended amount of sleep – 8½ to 9½ hours on school nights; and that most high school seniors get an average of less than seven hours.

More than 40 percent of the nation’s public high schools start classes before 8 a.m., according to government data cited in the policy. And even when the buzzer rings at 8 a.m., school bus pickup times typically mean kids have to get up before dawn if they want that ride.

“The issue is really cost,” said Kristen Amundson, executive director of the National Association of State Boards of Education.

School buses often make multiple runs each morning for older and younger students. Adding bus drivers and rerouting buses is one of the biggest financial obstacles to later start times, Amundson said. The roughly 80 school districts that have adopted later times tend to be smaller, she said.

After-school sports are another often-cited obstacle because a later dismissal delays practices and games. The shift may also cut into time for homework and after-school jobs, Amundson said.

Cooling centers open around Illinois in high heat

CHAMPAIGN – The Illinois Department of Human Services has set up more than 100 cooling centers around the state as high heat and humidity linger.

Gov. Pat Quinn’s office said in a news release Monday that the centers are open in Department of Human Services offices. Their locations are available by calling the agency or checking its Web site.

The National Weather Service issued heat warnings for all of Illinois except the extreme northern counties.

With highs in central Illinois expected to reach the mid-90s and heat-index readings forecast well

above 100 many schools that lack air conditioning are sending students home early.

The weather service said dangerously hot weather will return Tuesday before temperatures fall Wednesday.

Chief justice talks to incoming law students

CHAMPAIGN – The Illinois Supreme Court’s chief judge is among the justices touring the state’s nine law schools to talk about and administer a pledge of professionalism.

The Champaign News-Gazette reported that Chief Justice Rita Garman spoke to incoming class of about 160 students at the University of Illinois law students last week.

Garman is among several justices from the Illinois Supreme and Appellate courts touring law schools.

Father charged after 3-year-old shot in Chicago

CHICAGO – Authorities have charged the father of a 3-year-old Chicago boy after he was shot in the head at a West Side home.

James Jenkins was charged Sunday with felony unlawful use of a weapon by a felon. Prosecutors said the 26-year-old left a loaded .32 caliber handgun where children could reach it. A judge set bond at $500,000.

Prosecutors said Jenkins and the boy’s mother were with family members on their porch when the 3-year-old James Jenkins and his 5- and 7-year-old siblings went inside. They said a gunshot rang out and adults found the boy bleeding on the floor next to the gun.

The boy was hospitalized.

Prosecutors said he was stable on Sunday.

The father is being held in Cook County Jail.

Quinn vetoes Illinois ridesharing regulations

CHICAGO – Taxicab companies and others seeking statewide regulation of the emerging ridesharing industry pushed for a legislative override Monday after Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn vetoed measures that would have imposed background checks and insurance requirements on some drivers.

In a statement, Quinn said the two bills would have prevented local governments from adopting rules that fit their communities.

“I am vetoing this legislation because it would have mandated a one-size-fits-all approach to a service that is best regulated at the local level,” Quinn said.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel applauded the veto, and the City Council has passed an ordinance that will take effect next week.

Brown funeral mourners urge black Americans to take action

By JIM SUHR The Associated Press ST. LOUIS – The mourners filled an enormous church to remember Michael Brown — recalling him as a “gentle giant,” aspiring rapper and recent high school graduate on his way to a technical college.

But the funeral that unfolded Monday was about much more than the black 18-year-old who lay in the closed casket after being shot to death by a white police officer. The emotional service sought to consecrate Brown’s death as another in the long history of the civil rights movement and implored black Americans to change their protest chants into legislation and law.

“Show up at the voting booths. Let your voices be heard, and let everyone know that we have had enough of all of this,” said Eric Davis, one of Brown’s cousins.

The Rev. Al Sharpton called for a movement to clean up police forces and the communities they serve.

“We’re not anti-police. We

respect police. But those police that are wrong need to be dealt with just like those in our community that are wrong need to be dealt with,” Sharpton said.

Two uncles remembered how Brown had once predicted that someday the whole world would know his name.

“He did not know he was offering up a divine prophecy,” Bernard Ewing said.

More than 4,500 mourners filled Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis for the service, which at times seemed like a cross between a gospel revival and a rock concert. It began with upbeat music punctuated by clapping. Some people danced in place.

The crowd included the parents of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed 17-year-old African-American fatally shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Florida, along with a cousin of Emmett Till, a 14-year-old murdered by several white men while visiting Mississippi in 1955.

Till’s killing galvanized the civil rights movement.

Also in attendance were several White House aides, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, moviemaker Spike Lee, entertainer Sean Combs and some children of the Rev. Martin Luther King.

The Rev. Charles Ewing, the uncle who delivered the eulogy, said Brown “prophetically spoke his demise.” And now his blood is “crying from the ground. Crying for vengeance. Crying for justice.”

Poster-size photos of Brown, wearing headphones, were on each side of the casket, which had a St. Louis Cardinals ball cap atop it.

Large projection screens showed a photo of him clutching his high school diploma while wearing a cap and gown. Two days after his death, he had been scheduled to start training to become a heating and air-conditioning technician.

Brown, who was to be buried in a St. Louis cemetery, was unarmed when he was killed. A grand jury is considering evidence in the case, and a federal investigation is also underway.

Expert calls for nuke plant closure

By MICHAEL R. BLOOD The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – A senior federal nuclear expert is urging regulators to shut down California’s last operating nuclear plant until they can determine whether the facility’s twin reactors can withstand powerful shaking from any one of several nearby earthquake faults.

Michael Peck, who for five years was Diablo Canyon’s lead on-site inspector, said in a 42-page, confidential report that the Nuclear Regulatory Commission is not applying the safety rules it set out for the plant’s operation.

The document, which was obtained and verified by The Associated Press, does not say the plant itself is unsafe.

Instead, according to Peck’s analysis, no one knows whether the facility’s key equipment can withstand strong shaking from those faults – the potential for which was realized decades after the facility was built.

Continuing to run the reactors, Peck writes, “challenges the presumption of nuclear safety.”

Peck’s July 2013 filing is part of an agency review in which employees can appeal a supervisor’s or agency ruling – a process that normally takes 60 to 120 days, but can be extended. The NRC, however, has not yet ruled. Spokeswoman Lara Uselding said in emails that the agency would have no comment on the document.

The NRC, which oversees the nation’s commercial nuclear power industry, and Diablo Canyon owner Pacific Gas and Electric Co., said the nearly three-decade-old reactors, which produce enough electricity for more than 3 million people annually, are safe and that the facility complies with its operating license, including earthquake safety standards.

PG&E spokesman Blair Jones said the NRC has exhaustively analyzed earthquake threats for Diablo Can-

yon and demonstrated that it “is seismically safe.” Jones said in an email that the core issue involving earthquake ground motions was resolved in the late 1970s with seismic retrofitting of the plant.

The disaster preparedness of the world’s nuclear plants came into sharp focus in 2011, when the coastal Fukushima Dai-ichi plant in Japan suffered multiple meltdowns after an earthquake and tsunami destroyed its power and cooling systems. The magnitude-9 earthquake was far larger than had been believed possible. The NRC has since directed U.S. nuclear plants to reevaluate seismic risks, and those studies are due by March.

The importance of such an analysis came into sharp focus Sunday when a magnitude 6.0-earthquake struck in Northern California’s wine country, injuring scores of residents, knocking out power to thousands and toppling wine bottles at vineyards.

Ukrainian president dissolves parliament; calls for elections

By JIM HEINTZ The Associated Press KIEV, Ukraine – Ukraine’s president Monday dissolved parliament and called for early elections in October as his country continues to battle a pro-Russian insurgency in its eastern regions.

In a statement on his website, President Petro Poroshenko said snap elections would be held Oct. 26.

Poroshenko said the dissolution, which was prefigured by the breakup of the majority coalition last month, was in line with “the expectations of the vast majority of the citizens of Ukraine” and called it a move toward “cleansing” the parliament.

Many members of parliament “are allies of the militants-separatists,” Poroshenko said, referring to the pro-Russian rebels who have

battled government troops in the country’s east since April.

The Party of Regions, which is backed by much of the country’s industrial, Russian-speaking east and was supported by pro-Russian ex-President Viktor Yanukovych, was the largest party in parliament before Yanukovych fled the country in the wake of massive protests in February and still has a substantial presence.

Most of these members “accepted dictatorial laws that took the lives of the Heaven’s Hundred,” he said, using the common term for those killed during the protests against Yanukovych, many by sniper fire.

He emphasized the need to elect new leaders from the war-torn areas of east Ukraine in order to represent the region in the new government.

It wasn’t clear how it would

be possible to conduct elections at such short notice in Donetsk and Luhansk, where hundreds of thousands have fled their homes and shelling between rebel and government forces continues daily.

Over the past month, Ukrainian forces have made substantial inroads against pro-Russia separatists in eastern Ukraine, taking control of several sizeable towns and cities that had been under rebel control since April, when the clashes began.

But the advances have come at a high cost – more than 2,000 civilians reportedly killed and at least 726 Ukrainian servicemen. There is no independent figure for the number of rebel dead, although Ukrainian authorities said Monday that 250 rebels were in fighting around Olenivka, a town 15 miles south of Donetsk.

In many ways, the history of the plant, located halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco on the Pacific coast and within 50 miles of 500,000 people, has been a costly fight against nature, involving questions and repairs connected to its design and structural strength.

What’s striking about Peck’s analysis is that it comes from within the NRC itself, and gives a rare look at a dispute within the agency. At issue are whether the plant’s mechanical guts could survive a big jolt, and what yardsticks should be used to measure the ability of the equipment to withstand the potentially strong vibrations that could result.

The conflict between Peck and his superiors stems from the 2008 discovery of the Shoreline fault, which snakes

offshore about 650 yards from the reactors. A larger crack, the Hosgri fault, had been discovered in the 1970s about 3 miles away, after the plant’s construction permits had been issued and work was underway. Surveys have mapped a network of other faults north and south of the reactors.

According to Peck’s filing, PG&E research in 2011 determined that any of three nearby faults – the Shoreline, Los Osos and San Luis Bay — is capable of producing significantly more ground motion during an earthquake than was accounted for in the design of important plant equipment. In the case of San Luis Bay, it is as much as 75 percent more.

Those findings involve estimates of what’s called peak ground acceleration, a measurement of how hard the earth could shake in a given location. The analysis said PG&E failed to demonstrate that the equipment would remain operable if exposed to the stronger shaking, violating its operating license.

Doctor given experimental Ebola drug dies in Liberia

By JONATHAN PAYE–LAYLEH and ROB GILLIES The Associated Press MONROVIA, Liberia – A Liberian doctor who received one of the last known doses of an experimental Ebola drug has died, officials said Monday. Separately, Canada said it has yet to send out an untested vaccine that the government is donating.

Ebola has left more than 1,400 people dead across West Africa, underscoring the urgency for developing potential ways to stop and treat the disease.

The experimental vaccines are at still at a Canadian laboratory, said Patrick Gaebel, spokesman for the Public Health Agency of Canada, who declined to speculate how many weeks it could be before those are given to volunteers.

Earlier this month, Canada said it would donate 800 to 1,000

doses of an Ebola vaccine that it developed. Likely candidates include health care workers treating Ebola patients.

The experimental drug known as ZMapp has been tried in only six people. Health experts caution that since ZMapp was never tested in humans, it is unclear whether it works. The small supply is now said to be exhausted and it is expected to be months before more can be produced.

Dr. Abraham Borbor, the deputy chief medical doctor at Liberia’s largest hospital, had received ZMapp, along with two other Liberians. He “was showing signs of improvement but yesterday he took a turn for the worse,” and died Sunday, Information Minister Lewis Brown told The Associated Press.

There was no update provided Monday on the other two Liberians who received the drug.

Foot-dragging could lead to U.S. rail crash A major milestone was reached last week in the follow-up to the oil train explosion that killed 47 people last summer in Lac-Megantic, Quebec: Canadian investigators released a final report blaming lax government oversight and poor rail company safety practices for the tragic accident.

Although the Canadian government obviously didn’t fulfill its regulatory responsibilities, Canada is still way ahead of the United States in taking steps to prevent another such tragedy. Canada has banned the most decrepit tank cars; Washington, meanwhile, is calling for a drawn-out retirement and retrofitting process that could keep some of the cars in service until at least 2017. This reluctance to take action is putting U.S. communities so far down the track in terms of improved public safety they’re almost guaranteed to be left behind.

The train that crashed in Quebec in July 2013 was carrying nearly 2 million gallons of volatile North Dakota crude oil in DOT-111 tanker cars. When derailed, DOT-111 cars are easily punctured or ruptured, making them highly vulnerable to leaks and explosions.

The cars’ flaws were first noted in a National Transportation Safety Board study more than 20 years ago.

And in 2012, the NTSB concluded the DOT-111s’ “inadequate design” contributed to the severity of a 2009 oil train derailment in Illinois that killed one person and injured several others.

Because of a spike in U.S. crude oil production, moreover, the number of oil car accidents continues to climb: 116 in 2013, more than double the number of all episodes from 1990 to 2009.

Nonetheless, about 98,000 tank cars are in service – and most don’t have the latest safety features. All 72 cars in the Quebec runaway train, for example, were built to the older standard. So any of the major cities through which this train passed before reaching Lac-Megantic – including Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago and Detroit – could have been the site of an equally devastating derailment, spill and explosion.

In April, Canada barred 5,000 of the most poorly made, puncture-prone DOT-111s from carrying crude oil and ethanol.

But in the United States, all DOT-111s will stay in service until at least 2017, under proposed regulations that call for a two-year phase-out of the cars, effective September 2015, unless they’re retrofitted to comply with new safety standards.

Support for wage hike could boost November voter turnout Recent Chicago Tribune poll results appear to indicate that support for raising the minimum wage in the state’s largest city may be enough to increase voter turnout for a non-binding November ballot referendum.

The poll found that 84 percent of registered Chicago voters support a city task force recommendation to increase the minimum wage to $13 an hour over the next three years. According to the poll, 78 percent of whites and 92 percent of African-Americans and even 71 percent of Chicagoans making more than $100,000 a year back the plan.

VIEWS Rich Miller Democrats have been hoping to use the statewide non-binding referendum to raise the minimum wage to $10 an hour as a tool to help spur turnout in what is rapidly developing into a big Republican year.

And with numbers like the Tribune’s backing a much higher minimum wage, it does seem likely that the issue can be effective, particularly among African-Americans.

Support above 70 to 80 percent is generally seen as having a ballot impact.

Get above 90, and it’s sure to drive votes. Then again, the comparatively “stingy” state ballot proposal – when compared to the Chicago proposal – might garner lesser enthusiasm.

Proponents are hoping to use the issue to convince 400,000 people to sign “pledge cards” stating they will definitely vote this November. So far, they’ve collected 70,000 cards, which they will use to track the signatories through Election Day.

With each increase, my quality of life decreases because I have to pay more for coverage. This is going to get worse as the Health Insurance Tax (HIT) starts taking its toll on health insurers, causing them to raise our rates again. To stop this, I wrote my representative in the U.S. House asking him to co-sponsor HR 3367.

After 15 years of operating my business, I currently have five employees. My company’s health insurance plan isn’t very comprehensive, which is why most of my employees have supplemental insurance through their wives’ policies.

This is a terrible burden to place on me, and even worse to put on my employees.

This will allow Congress to figure out another way to fund the Affordable Care Act that doesn’t involve destroying the small business community and, ultimately, the U.S. economy.

Announced last month by the federal Department of Transportation, the rules would apply only to “high-hazard flammable trains” that carry at least 20 cars of volatile liquids. DOT-111s that haven’t been retrofitted could still be used beyond 2015 on trains with 19 or fewer tank cars – a massive loophole.

The U.S. DOT realizes it’s dangerous to keep shipping volatile crude in substandard rail cars.

The agency even said as much in the news release announcing the proposal: “The safety risk presented by transporting Bakken crude oil by rail is magnified both by an increasing volume of Bakken being shipped ... throughout the U.S. and the large distances over which the product is shipped.”

To have this knowledge and still fail to act on it is to take a cynical view of the well-being of the people whom the agency is supposed to protect – and it gives public service a bad name.

The bigger question, however, is what Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan does with all the money he’s been raising to push the ballot initiative.

Madigan, who also is the state Democratic Party chairman, has been traveling the country to raise cash. Everybody who chipped in to recall Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker in 2012 is being paid a visit. Labor unions alone spent more than $20 million on that race, and Madigan is telling those labor leaders they can spend the money now to defeat the anti-union Bruce Rauner, or spend the money later to fight Rauner after he’s elected.

The Republicans are attempting to convince themselves that Madigan will spend that cash on his hottest state legislative races instead of in Chicago and south suburban Cook County, where it would do the most good for the statewide ticket because of high numbers of African-Americans.

Democrats often have complained in the past that “coordinated campaign” money has been redirected

to Madigan’s legislative races, and they’re not sure what he’ll do this year.

Most are fairly certain that Madigan won’t have his candidates run away from the top of the ticket. The speaker tried that in 1994, during a huge Republican wave. Late in the game, photos of Republican Gov. Jim Edgar started appearing in Democratic legislative mailers.

But that backfired in a major way.

It just helped Edgar win by a larger margin, which swept away Madigan’s candidates. Madigan has to do whatever he can to boost Gov. Pat Quinn’s prospects within his districts, and that means lots of voter registration and get-out-the-vote activities. And none of those all-important districts is in Chicago or south suburban Cook County.

But it won’t be easy.

I’ve seen some private polling results recently show Quinn doing even worse than expected in suburban counties where Madigan has some other tough races.

My own polling has shown Bruce Rauner doing quite well in suburban Cook County, which has trended Democratic over the years and will be the scene of several hotly contested Illinois House races.

And, the other day, a top Democratic strategist derided the Quinn campaign’s attempt to convince Illinoisans that the job and economic situation is starting to turn around as “stupid.”

“They’re telling voters not to believe their own lying eyes,” he complained. Focus groups, he said, are finding that voters “are so mad at the state of things that it insults their intelligence to tell them things are changing, especially in the downstate communities.”

The Democrat had knowledge of one particular downstate congressional focus group, which found people were “openly hostile to Quinn – like punch him if he was in the room at the time hostile.” Madigan has one Tier One contest in that congressional district and another adjacent to the district.

So, keep an eye on Chicago and south suburban Cook “get-out-thevote” efforts. It’s Gov. Quinn’s best hope right now and a likely drain on Madigan’s resources. If he spends lots of cash there, Quinn just might make this thing a close one.

By RYAN WOODEN Shaw Media Correspondent MINOOKA – Coming off three straight winning seasons and playoff berths to end the Bert Kooi tenure at Minooka, the hope was that the team guided by new coach Paul Forsythe would continue the Indians’ football success.

However, after narrowly missing out on the playoffs in 2012 with tough late-season losses of eight points or fewer to Plainfield South and North and a rough 3-6 season in 2013, Forsythe’s Indians are still yet to have their first postseason experience.

Now, with another hotly contested season opener with rival Morris looming, Forsythe is optimistic the 2014 team has the right attitude to turn this program around.

“These kids have bought in, and they’re all in with what we want to do,” Forsythe said. “That’s huge in whatever it is you’re selling. Now it just comes down to those kids making some plays on the field, but they’ve done everything we’ve asked. They’ve gone above and beyond in the summer, and we’ve got some pretty positive vibes right now.”

Contributing to those positive vibes are six returning starters on both sides of the ball, headlined by Division-I caliber running back Nate Gunn and the leading tackler from 2013, Jeff Klank.

(268 rushing yards and a touchdown in 2013) should make Minooka’s rushing attack formidable. Gunn looks to improve on his already-impressive numbers from last season (860 rushing yards and

14 touchdowns).

“This is my third season on varsity, and I couldn’t be more excited than I am with the players that I’m with right now,” Gunn said. “I’ve seen kids come through for the past two years,

but this is by far the best team I’ve been a part of attitudewise.

“We’re a smaller team, but these guys are feisty and they want to win.”

The challenge for Minooka offensively essentially will be retooling the entire passing attack after the unit was gutted by the graduation of quarterback Jake Czerniakowski and the three leading receivers.

Sophomore Johnny Carnagio has cemented himself as a starter, Forsythe said.

“He is a sophomore, but he’s the best option in our program and he’s proven that he’s ready for this and that he wants this,” Forsythe said of his young signal-caller.

“Our defense is still a work in progress, but I do feel better about where we are defensively and what we have going for us because we’ve got [Ferko] who is doing a magical job,” Forsythe said. “The kids buy in completely to what Chris Ferko is selling, and while we may not be where we’d like right now, we’ll be there.”

MORRIS – Ever since Morris’ 2013 football season came to end with a 49-14 loss to Kaneland, the Redskins had been waiting for Aug. 11, the first official day of practice.

Despite camps and 7-on-7s throughout the summer, that was the IHSA’s official start date.

“We had a camp at the end of July,” Morris coach Alan Thorson said. “So [the first practice] was basically an extension of that. We are still doing a lot of conditioning and a lot of oneon-one drills since we are just in helmets for a couple of days.

It’s more of a review when we run plays, but it’s good to get everyone together as a team and on the same page as far as what we want to accomplish.”

The Redskins’ main goal in 2014 is getting that memory of last year’s 3-6 final mark out of their minds. It was the first time since 1976 that Morris had won fewer than four games and just the second time since then – 2000 being the other – that the Redskins lost more games than they won.

“That [the 3-6 record] hasn’t set well with anyone,” Thorson said. “Not the coaches, not the fans and definitely not with the kids. They had a chip on their shoulders this year, that’s for sure. They have since last November when we started lifting weights.

“They want to move on from last year, for sure, but they also feel like they have something to prove. These seniors this year have put a lot of work in, and with this junior class coming in, there’s a different mix. We really like what we’ve seen.”

One of the main reasons for optimism is returning running back Jake Walker, who ran for more than 1,000 yards last season in nine games. Walker is a year older and stronger, as is much of the offensive line in front of him.

“I want to get out there and show what we can do,” Walker said. “We weren’t happy with finishing 3-6 last year and we definitely have a chip on our shoulder about that. The atti-

Sky guard Allie Quigley, a Joliet Catholic graduate, was honored before Sunday’s opening round playoff game at Allstate Arena as the winner of the 2014 WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year presented by Samsung award.

Quigley received 26 votes from a national panel of 38 sportswriters and broadcasters to earn her first Sixth Woman of the Year honor. Jia Perkins of the San Antonio Stars finished second with six votes. Rookie Shoni Schimmel of the Dream was third with four votes, and Danielle Adams of the Stars received two votes.

In the Sky’s 92-83 loss Sunday to Atlanta, which evened the best-of-three opening-round series 1-1, Quigley scored 20 points in just under 20 minutes of playing time. She hit 7-of-12 shots, one a three-pointer, and 5-of-6 free throws.

The Sky and Dream meet in the series finale Tuesday night in Atlanta.

Quigley, who will be inducted Saturday evening as a member of the first class of the Joliet Catholic Hall of Champions, played in all 34 games in the regular season, averaging 24.8 minutes.

Among Eastern Conference players, she ranked 12th in scoring (11.2), nearly tripling her 3.8 average from 2013. She also ranked sixth in the league in freethrow percentage (.879, 51-of-58) and eighth in 3-point percentage (.387, 41-of106).

Earlier, for games played Aug. 4-10, Quigley received the first Player of the Week award of her career. The sixth-year pro out of DePaul came off the bench in all three games that week to lead the East in scoring (18.0) as the Sky posted a 2-1 mark. That week she also paced Eastern

NEW LENOX – After winning just six matches a year ago, Plainfield South’s boys soccer team seems intent on experiencing a lot more success this season.

The Cougars made their intentions clear in Monday’s opener when they jumped out to a 4-0 halftime lead at Lincoln-Way Central and only allowed a last-second goal as they captured a 4-1 nonconference victory.

“The first game can be an adventure, but today we got a few chances and we finished early; and it’s always nice when you put one of the first few in, not only for our confidence but it put Lincoln-Way back on its heels a bit,” said Cougars coach Dave Brown, a former standout for the Knights. “We utilized the wind in the first half pretty well on dead balls and shots to keep them under constant pressure.

And today our shots were going in for us.

“We have a veteran group, so we’re putting the leadership on those guys. They have lofty goals and want to do some big things this year, and this was the first step in the process.

We started off on the right note, and we want to build off of that.”

Parker Gallt and Rey Uriostegui each had a goal and an assist, while Anthony Hernandez and Ben Graunke also scored goals and Michael Decker added a pair of assists for South.

“We came out and knew what we had to do,” Gallt said.

“We hadn’t scored on them in two years, so we said that we would score in the first 10 minutes as a team, and we did that.

The chemistry on this team is as good as it’s ever been, and we’re tight since we’re always together. It’s a great group, and we all like each other and know how one another will play.”

Hernandez got things started in the ninth minute when he sent a pass to Decker, who passed it back to him and Hernandez fired a liner that went off the keeper’s hands.

South scored its first of two corner kick goals in the 17th minute when Uriostegui lined one in front of the net and Gallt was there to put in the short try.

The Cougars grabbed a 3-0 lead in the 19th minute when Uriostegui lined in an attempt from the side after receiving a pass from Decker.

As the opening half was winding down, South was at it again as Graunke scored on a Uriostegui corner kick to make it 4-0 at the break.

After that, the Cougars relied on a defense led by Chase Cleasby, Michael Santillo, Graunke and Hernandez and keeper Eric Fischer to keep the Knights at bay.

“I’m really looking forward to the season since we have a lot of talent and think that we can do great things this year,” Santillo said. “We have some great young talent, like Dom Skrip, who’s a freshman.

We’re real excited, focused and motivated this year because last year we weren’t where we wanted to be. So this year is a redemption year for us.”

While South continued to get some good attempts in the final half, most notably from Adam Burt and Dominick Skrip, the Knights finally began to apply some pressure on Fischer.

Jacob Lysik had a shot deflected away by the keeper and later saw a free kick get punched over the net. It appeared the score would remain 4-0, but Lysik was credited with a score from close range just before the final whistle.

“We wanted to come out on the right foot since this is

the last year for a lot of us,” Fischer said. “This should be a good year since we have a lot of talent, and that should help us out in hard games.

This gives us something to try to keep up with for the rest of the season.”

While Brown won’t make too much of one match, his Central counterpart Sean Fahey, another former Knight player, isn’t going to get too down about his team’s first effort.

“We can say that it was windy or rainy, but there’s two halves and you have to make adjustments and we kind of failed to do so,” Fahey said.

“Credit South since they were definitely hungry. It was a big eye-opener for a few guys who maybe thought that the season would start off differently. We have talented returning players, like Jake Lysik and Tyler Massa, but that’s not going to be enough.”

Yoga is different from most other health programs, said Galey Kielian, because it helps the body, the mind and the spirit. She said in this country, some tend to view yoga as only a physical exercise, but in India, there is very little physical movement.

“It’s breath training,” she said. “It’s mind training. It’s how to live. When people come to my class, it’s almost overwhelming at first because it’s so different from other classes.”

Yoga can be quite a workout and a body-stretcher.

Some of the poses may resemble contortions that only the most limber of gymnasts can strike. And when they do, one wonders how they manage to untangle themselves.

Kielian teaches a different kind of yoga. Her “Forever Young” classes at her Crest Hill yoga center – Just Breathe Yoga – are for those 60 and older. She modifies the poses and other physical movements to fit her students for their ages and physical abilities.

“Not everybody comes to yoga having been an exerciser,” Kielian said. “There’s no competition in yoga. You fit the pose to what your body can do. Even though it’s a group class, it’s very individualized. I give modifications for every single thing we do.”

“It works all of your muscles, and it’s good for stretching,” Dee said. “You look forward to it. Your mind can be racing, but when you’re there, your mind just focuses on that. ... You get very centered and in the ‘now’ place.”

In the past, Dee – who used to do jazzercise – had tried but said the classes either weren’t right for her or the timing

It’s learning to live in a mindful way, from eating right to being kind and truthful. “After you do your practice in the studio,” she said, “you go out into the world and keep it with you.”

Yoga techniques can help one remain calm in stressful situations, Kielian said. Decreasing stress can improve blood pressure. Easing anxiety can promote sleep. Yoga also strengthens the muscles and bones, she said, which is something seniors definitely need, as they lose bone and muscle mass as they age.

“In our classes, we work on our feet,” Kielian said, “using the muscles in our feet and our legs and using our joints.”

Her seniors do warrior poses, the triangle pose and the tree pose, leaning on the wall or chairs for balance. She does not teach inversions, head stands, the downward-facing dog or sun salutations.

Such poses are hard on older bodies, Kielian said. So she makes it fun, helps her students with their varying abilities and keeps the focus away from who can get a leg up in the air.

“If yours isn’t,” Kielian said, “it’s OK.”

The Journal Deena Nardi o f P s y c h o s o cial Nursing and Mental Health Services published a guest editorial, “Guidelines for Culturally Effective Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing Worldwide,”

by Nardi in its May 2014 issue.

Nardi, of Crete, also is the director for the university’s Cecily & John Leach College of Nursing. A registered nurse, Nardi also is a psychiatric mental health certified nurse specialist.

The doctor of nursing practitioner program is an outgrowth of the university’s graduate nursing programs that have sustained a 100 percent pass rate on certification exams over the past three years. USF’s doctor of nursing, master and bachelor of science programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Nardi is a member of a task force of the American Academy of Nurses that developed and completed the first “Guidelines for Implementing Culturally Competent Nursing Care” over a seven-year period. These guidelines have been endorsed by the International Council of Nurses, which has pledged to increase the outreach of this work. ICN has disseminated the guidelines to more than 130 national nurses associations.

The tourist is passive; he expects interesting things to happen to him. He goes ‘sight-seeing.’ ” At the bridge table, the active defender goes strenuously in search of tricks. The passive defender hopes that tricks will have to be given to him. But how does he know which way to turn?

First, listen closely to the bidding. If the opponents bid aggressively, but stop in game, be active. If they inch up to game, stay passive, almost certainly leading a trump (or from a strong honor sequence).

In today’s deal, what should West lead against four hearts?

Note that North is right to respond one diamond. With a good hand, responder bids his longest suit first. North’s four-club rebid is a splinter, showing four-card heart support, at least game-going values and a singleton or void in clubs. (If South has very weak clubs, a slam is a distinct possibility.)

Since North has made a slam suggestion, West should lead actively, selecting the spade two, not a passive trump or diamond queen (especially as dummy rates to have at least five diamonds).

Leading low from length guarantees an honor in that suit.

So East should know that he can take dummy’s spade nine with his jack, cash the spade ace, and lead a third round to his partner’s king.

ADVICE New life for ring from broken engagement Time to talk to parents Dear Abby: I was engaged several years ago, but the engagement didn’t last. We broke up and I gave him back his ring. We remain close friends, however, and hang out at least once a week.

I have been dating another guy for a couple of years, and we’re thinking about getting engaged.

I am wondering if it would be improper to ask my ex if we could buy my old ring from him. It was – and still is – my “dream ring,” and I know my ex has kept it in the glove box of his car ever since I gave it back to him.

‘Advanced’ cholesterol testing can be useful for some Dear Doctor K: Should I request “advanced” cholesterol testing at my next checkup?

Dear Reader: A standard cholesterol test, or lipid profile, measures levels of HDL, LDL, total cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood. So-called “advanced” cholesterol testing is a more detailed version of this test. Cholesterol is a waxy, yellowish fat. It travels through your bloodstream in tiny, protein-covered particles called lipoproteins. These particles contain cholesterol and triglycerides, a type of fat.

The smallest and densest particles are high-density lipoproteins (HDL). Also known as “good” cholesterol, HDL removes cholesterol from artery walls.

Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particles are known as “bad” cholesterol. They add cholesterol to the artery walls. There, it creates artery-clogging plaque that can trigger a heart attack or stroke. Most doctors use LDL levels to predict heart attack risk.

But many people with heart disease have LDL levels that aren’t especially high. It turns out that not all LDL particles are created equal. Larger, fluffier LDL particles may have a harder time getting into arteries. Smaller, more tightly packed LDL may have an

And a particular protein on LDL – apoB – further increases heart disease risk. Advanced cholesterol tests measure LDL sub-particles as well as apoB. My colleague Dr. Jorge Plutzky is director of the Lipid/Prevention Clinic and co-director of Preventive Cardiology at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He says that for the average person, the additional detail from advanced lipid testing isn’t critical. It wouldn’t change the treatment a doctor would have otherwise recommended. Why does he say that? Because there are plenty of new tests that have theoretical value in determining a person’s risk of heart disease and stroke. But they should be considered standard, generally recommended tests only if they actually make the prediction of risk more accurate.

For a new test to become standard, it needs to be used along with standard tests in thousands of people. Those people then are

followed for many years. Some will develop heart disease or have a stroke, and some will not. The standard tests, since they’ve already been proven, will do a good job. While they won’t be perfect, they will identify people who are more likely to develop disease.

But will the new test, when added to the standard tests, make that prediction even more accurate?

That’s what has to be shown for doctors to use the new test.

Dr. Plutzky thinks that advanced cholesterol testing might help to better understand heart disease risk in certain groups of people. These include people with a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) without obvious risk factors (such as high blood pressure or diabetes); a history of CVD before age 55 in men or before age 65 in women; and a parent or sibling with early heart disease.Whatever you decide about the test, don’t forget triedand-true strategies for lowering heart disease risk. These include eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight.

Dr. Wallace: I had a really bad year at school last year because two boys called me names and hit me every day.

They made me give them my lunch money every day and threatened to beat me up every day after school if I told anyone.

They said nobody would believe me if I told on them because they would say that I made it up. I hated going to school and I was happy when summer vacation was here.

But now I am just dreading when summer ends and I’ll be going back to school again.

What I can I do to get these guys to leave me alone? I read your column and I know you usually tell kids like me to fight back, but I can’t do that. Please tell me what to do when school starts. I’m even afraid to tell my parents about this. – Nameless, South Bend, Indiana Dear Nameless: You don’t necessarily need to fight back, but you must stop being afraid. As a former high school principal, I fully understand the terrible position these bullies have placed you in – your situation is shockingly common.

And it won’t stop until you take some action and get people on your side. Start by telling your parents what is happening at school and insist that they meet with the principal when school starts in the fall.

The principal has the authority to see that this form of brutality and extortion is eliminated immediately.

Suspension followed by a parent conference is the least these two bullies should receive.

The problem should be effectively handled by the principal, but if for

I had good grades and wanted to start college in the fall, but my graduation class graduated without me and now I’ve since taken and passed the GED test and was given a high school diploma.

I don’t consider the GED diploma the same as a regular diploma and I’m wondering if it is accepted for college entrance. I still want to get a college degree so I can get a good job in the future. – Ricardo, Fullerton, California Dear Ricardo: Even a normal high school diploma is not a guarantee for college or university admission. But the General Equivalency Diploma is considered the equivalent of a high school diploma, and qualifies you for admission to a college or university if, after an interview and testing, you are found to have the academic ability to complete the school’s requirements.

By ED SYMKUS More Content Now Every year at this time for the past decade, I put my movie ducks in a row and make a wish list of what I’d like to see – for work and pleasure – at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). It’s the biggest fest in North America that’s open to members of the film industry, the press and the public.

If you love movies, get yourself to the sprawling city of Toronto, where TIFF runs from Sept. 4-14. Among the 393 films being shown on 28 different screens, there are features, shorts, world premieres and a couple of old classics. There’s also the chance of getting a glimpse of or spending a chat session with actors, directors, writers and producers from around the planet. TIFF is a world-class festival that runs the gamut of the movie-going experience. There will be films from major studios that will open in a few weeks but can be seen here first. There are independent features galore, some of which will open in theaters over the next few months, while others – even if they’re deemed terrific by some viewers – will go straight to disc or the stream, or never be heard from again.

In the years I’ve attended, I’ve had to see some films because interviews with filmmakers were set up in advance. But I’ve always made time to check out some titles I’ve never heard of, that I might not get to see on a big screen anywhere else.

I’ve only carved out enough time to be at TIFF for six days this year, and some interviews are already planned. For my “spare time,” I made an initial list of 61 films that looked promising, then, for reasons of maintaining sanity, carved that number down to 33. Well, even that ain’t gonna happen, but here’s a brief preview of the 15 that are calling out my name, and that I will make my priority.

“Foxcatcher” – The true story of wealthy John du Pont (Steve Carell), his involvement with Olympic gold medal wrestler brothers Dave and

Mark Schultz (Mark Ruffalo, Channing Tatum), and a road to murder.

“Hector and the Search for Happiness” – Sometimes funny, mostly serious, this tells of a psychiatrist (Simon Pegg) who, unable to properly explain “happiness” to some of his patients, sets off on a journey to find out what it really is.

“A Little Chaos” – Alan Rickman directs and stars as Louis XIV, for whom a female landscaper (Kate Winslet) is hired to design the royal gardens at Versailles.

“Love & Mercy” – Paul Dano plays the young Brian Wilson, John Cusack plays the older Brian Wilson, and Paul Giamatti played Dr. Eugene Landy, the controversial quack who played with the Beach Boy’s already messedup head.

“Maps to the Stars” – Emotional problems haunt a Hollywood family (as does a possible ghost) in David Cronenberg’s psychological study of the pursuit of celebrity and escape from the past.

“Men, Women and Children” – Director Jason Reitman looks at contemporary love lives in stories featuring high school teens and their parents, and how social media

has complicated and changed everything.

“Mr. Turner” – Timothy Spall won the coveted Best Actor award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal of the brilliant (and a bit crazy) British Landscape artist J.M.W. Turner. Directed

by Mike Leigh.

“Nightcrawler” – Busy screenwriter Dan Gilroy (“The Bourne Legacy,” “The Fall”) gets his first directing credit in this study of a freelance writer (Jake Gyllenhaal) who gets caught up in a nasty L.A. crime scene.

“Rosewater” – Remember when “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart took some time off a while back? It was to direct this film about a journalist who was imprisoned in Iran, partly due to an appearance he made on Stewart’s show.

“Tusk” – It’s Kevin Smith’s newest film. I’ve decided to print verbatim what it says on the Internet Movie Data Base: “A man is captured by a maniac and tortured, physically and mentally, into becoming a walrus.”
