It was lieutenant governor day at Joliet’s Family Fiesta

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The governor’s race took the stage – literally – at Family Fiesta where live music was interrupted twice Sunday so candidates could deliver political messages.

Both candidates for lieutenant governor, Democrat Paul Vallas and Republican Evelyn Sanguinetti, came to the event.

Vallas was a substitute for Gov. Pat Quinn, who was expected. Republican candidate for governor, Bruce Rauner, had been tentatively scheduled to come Saturday, but also did not show.

Even so, their running mates gave spirited speeches, although brief ones under time limits granted them while given the stage.

Sanguinetti, although facing a Hispanic audience that may be inclined to vote Democrat, appeared right at home giving her speech in Spanish.

She is the child of immigrants from Cuba and Ecuador and related that story to the audience.

“Both of my parents came to the States as immigrants because they wanted a better quality of life,” Sanguinetti later told a non-Spanish speaking

reporter in offering a summary of her speech.

Sanguinetti said she asked the audience what they thought of the quality of life – specifically the future of jobs and education – under the Quinn administration.

Vallas, too, peppered his speech with questions to the audience.

“Gov. Quinn supports an increase in the minimum wage,” Vallas said. “He believes that people who work a 40-hour week deserve a living wage.

Don’t you?”

Vallas also contended that Rauner would erode education and seek to turn back accessibility to health care made available under the Obama administration.

Sanguinetti appeared to have gotten wind of some of Vallas’ comments when she had arrived a couple of hours afterwards.

“I hear my friend was here talking all kinds of fiction,” Sanguinetti remarked to a supporter when she arrived.

While Hispanics tend to vote Democratic, Sanguinetti and other Republicans are trying to change that in the November election. Local members of the Republican National Hispanic Assembly had a table at the fair

and wore Rauner T-shirts.

Steve Orlando, a Joliet resident who is state chairman of the Republican National Historic Assembly, described Rauner as someone with a history of “reaching out to people of diverse backgrounds.”

Vallas and other Democratic speakers, meanwhile, pushed a theme of their party being the friend of working people.

Vallas called Quinn “a governor for the working man and woman.”

State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, joined Vallas on the stage and accused Republicans supporting policies that erode wages, pensions and union labor.

“Here in Joliet,” Walsh said, “we were built by the working class – working men and women building a community.”

If Democrats were disappointed that Quinn himself did not arrive, they did not show it. But until Vallas showed up, they had said they were expecting the governor.

Likewise, Republicans at the Fiesta on Saturday afternoon were looking forward to an appearance by Rauner. But with three hours of rain during the day, there would have been few people to meet if Rauner had come.

Town meeting slated for Tuesday on veterans housing

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A nonprofit group that is converting four apartment buildings in a Joliet neighborhood into veterans housing will hold a town meeting Tuesday to talk about the project.

Veterans Housing and Employment Assistance is creating 30 apartments in the buildings at Hickory and Oneida streets. Two of the buildings already are occupied, and two more are under construction.

“We currently have five

veterans living there now,” said Christopher LaFayelle, co-founder of the organization.

The meeting is at 6 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, 710 W. Marion St. LaFayelle said the meeting will be a chance for members of the community to learn more about the project. It also will provide information for local contractors interested in doing work on the two remaining buildings.

Veterans Housing and Employment Assistance provides housing for low-income veterans while offering assistance in

finding employment, LaFayelle said. The Wheaton-based organization has done a similar project in Waukegan and has plans for others in Elgin, Rockford and Dixon, LaFayelle said.

The two buildings already completed have seven units with five occupied. The two buildings yet to be finished are 15-unit and eight-unit buildings.

Plans for the larger building have been modified to include fewer apartments, LaFayelle said. City officials had raised concerns about the number of units in the building, he said.

QUICK NEWS Board receives award from poison center JOLIET – The Will County Board has accepted the Lifesaver of the Year award from the Illinois Poison Center for its strong support this past spring in urging state lawmakers to continue funding the nation’s longest-standing poison center.

The Illinois Poison Center estimates it saves the state $52 million a year with a budget of only $4.3 million, according to a news release from the county.

Without its operation, more patients would rely on 911 and hospitals.

The center is able to treat 90 percent of people at home without referral to a health care facility. Nearly 90,000 people call the center every year.

General admission tickets included 40 tickets for two ounce pours, as well as three sampling tickets for the Sam Adams Homebrew Pavilion.

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The threat of severe weather Saturday led to the postponement of the start of the Midwest Brewers Fest, but the show eventually went on – ponchos and all.

Minutes before the 1 p.m. scheduled opening, festival-goers waiting in line near the entrance into Plainfield Riverfront Park were told by the Plainfield Police Department to seek shelter in their cars and that the event would be delayed amid concerns of lightning and high winds.

About an hour later, the storm had passed and patrons were allowed in.

But the water didn’t go away.

Near the back end of the festival, as the DuPage River inched closer, event organizers could be seen pushing out parked cars stuck in the mud.

Jon Proulz, a Midwest Brewers Fest board member, said having volunteers, along with beer and food vendors, park their vehicles in the back of the festival was something organizers were “trying out for the first time this year” to allow patrons to park on-site.

“This was our first time doing this. This was definitely a learning experience,” Proulz said. “Despite the weather, everyone’s been in really good spirits. I wouldn’t say every-

body, but a good number are in good spirits.”

Kevin Bramwell of Bolingbrook was among those in line who were initially turned away at the gate. Before the

storm hit, he and his friends “sought refuge” at Larry’s Diner in downtown Plainfield.

“We ended up at Larry’s Diner and had a beer,” he said.

Despite the rain-soaked

Several people donned ponchos or rain boots, while others – including friends Laura Schilling and Erin Polk – tiptoed across the mud-soaked lawn in flip-flops on a mission to taste their next beer sample.

On the bright side, the rain kept lines shorter and larger crowds away, said Polk, 37, of Chicago.

“It almost makes the experience better,” she said.

Because of the delayed start, organizers initially told event-goers they would extend the festival hours from 5 to 6 p.m. However, Plainfield Police decided to shut down at

Hopstring Fest blends beer with local, original music

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com Hopstring Fest is just an extension of Mike Trizna’s time spent as a child sitting around the dining room table with his grandfather exchanging vinyl records and conversation.

“I’d bring something my grandpa had never heard and he’d bring something I had never heard and we’d just sit and listen and talk about it,” said Trizna, co-creator of the Hopstring Fest, an all-day music-meets-beer festival that celebrated its third year Saturday.

“That’s what got me interested in original music.”

All but one of the 31 bands who hit the stage Saturday at Silver Cross Field in Joliet have local ties and each played original songs, said Trizna, co-owner of Chicago Street Pub, a venue known to cater to original local music instead of cover bands.

Chris Foray of Joliet was among the several local musicians in Saturday’s lineup.

Foray, guitarist for The Regressors, said he appreciates the community that Trizna brings to the Joliet music scene.

“It’s great for the local music. There’s an abundance of music around here that is just ripe with really talented musicians and bands.”

Foray said, laughing. “It’s just wonderful to be a part of a family, you know.”

The 12-hour festival – where roots rock meets craft beer – had everything from bluegrass and jazz to rock ’n’ roll and jam bands throughout the day.

Garrett Degnan, bassist for The Leadfoot Band, called the idea behind the festival “fantastic.”

“It’s a great thing, what they’re doing out here,” Degnan said. “It’s great for the local music. There’s an abundance of music around here that is just ripe with really talented

musicians and bands.”

The Leadfoot Band’s sound includes progressive bluegrass coupled with roots and rockinfluenced acoustics, with influences from Hank Williams, Split Lip and Lou Reed, among others.

“We don’t only have like the traditional bluegrass tunes. We do other tunes,” Degnan said.

Valley View Farm and Restaurant FRANKFORT – Located just east of Wolf Road on Route 30, the Valley View Farm and Restaurant in Frankfort was a favorite spot for locals or Lincoln Highway tourists who wanted good food and a relaxing environment.

Although the majority of the food served in the restaurant was raised on the farm, Valley View Farm was best remembered for its numerous dining rooms including the Sun-Air Room and the Lean-To Lounge, with its piano bar.

Tourists who needed to stay the evening could find accommodations in the Vacation Center, which included a motel and swimming pool.

The then photograph, circa 1959, shows a view of the restaurant from Route 30 (Lincoln Highway).

Today, the Frankfort Township offices, are located on the old farm complex and the swimming pool, which for many years offered area residents a place to cool off in the summertime, was closed in 2005 and a new township building was built in its place.

Hazen, whose career with The Herald-News spanned 40 years, died 10 years ago on Aug. 25, 2004, at age 58 from complications of several illnesses.

On my first day at the paper eight months earlier I told him “Nice to meet you, Mr. Hazen,” and he stopped in his tracks.

“It’s Hawk, kid. Just Hawk,” he said, examining me over his glasses much like a bird of prey.

Hawk started with the paper the day after he graduated from Joliet Township High School in 1964. He told me he got the nickname after a cop he was talking with noticed he could read a police report being held upside-down as they faced each other.

But it could’ve been short for “Nighthawk.” From 1964 to 1983, all but five of his shifts at the paper were all-nighters.

Hawk pioneered local coverage of girls sports and spent 10 years as sports editor. He wrote columns called “Hawk’s Eye” and “On The Air” to offer his opinion on sports and local radio. He loved to talk pro baseball with me, but he loved local youth sports more.

“Kids are excited to see their names in the paper. They don’t have any ambition or agenda, they’re just happy to be recognized,” he once told me.

His desk in the newsroom was littered with baseball cards, team programs, schedules, magazines and other paraphernalia. I’m told his bachelor apartment was the same way.

Hawk filled his decades of single life with travel to sporting events and road trips

until 1993. He hadn’t seen his childhood friend Dorothy Etavard since high school, but sent a sympathy note when her husband died.

“Dot” called to thank him. He recognized her voice immediately. They married, he became a stepfather to her four children and readers gained a wealth of column material.

The family man was enjoying the day shift by the time I joined the staff. Hawk didn’t give any advice on writing technique, but he did offer some philosophy that has crossed my mind countless times in the last decade.

“Some days,” he told me, “you’ll [cover] a topic that you’re sure will stir things up and you’ll write something great and ... nothing.

“Other times you’ll write ‘Mom and apple pie are good.’

That gets printed and brother, look out! How some people can get riled up over things.”

Hawk himself didn’t rile easily. Any newsroom chaos was something he’d already seen.

“Don’t worry about it, B-Man,” he told me many times. “Despite our best efforts, it looks like we actually will publish tomorrow.”

He usually followed that up by saying “After all, we are Will County’s only daily disappointment.”

He’d joke like that a lot, but everyone could tell how he felt about this paper.

“I wouldn’t want to do anything else,” he told me just before he marked his 40th anniversary.

“Not even pitching for the Cardinals,” I asked, and still remember it made him smile.

“No. I still love this job. I like the people I work with and the stories I’ve been able to do.”

Hawk realized his answer sounded a bit like a speech and went right into one of his standby imitations of a rousing politician.

“Thank you very much, my fellow Americans,” he addressed me and the parking lot.

No, Hawk. Thank you.

CHANNAHON – The famous African proverb, so famously quoted by Hillary Rodham Clinton, says it takes a village to raise a child. The same appears to hold true in the building of a fellowship hall for a local church.

Thanks to the generosity of both parishioners and some community-minded people who aren’t even members of the congregation, Channahon United Methodist is now able to build a fellowship hall.

Ever since the new church was built in 1998, parishioners have been holding fast to their belief that someday they would have an area to house many of their events. The fellowship hall was included in the original blueprints, but due to financial considerations the facility was broken into two phases, CUMC Pastor Steve Good said.

The facility will be used for multiple things, he said, including the church’s Turkey Supper, for which they are well-known in the community.

The narthex where the dinners have been served for the past 15-plus years seats just 70 people at a time. Now they will be able to seat 200.

It can be utilized for their potluck dinners, youth groups and retreats, daytime events and even concerts for the community. Boy Scout Troop 444 of Channahon is one of the church’s ministries and it is looking forward to holding events there, as is the larger council, Good said.

The church also houses the Thrift Shop, which supplies everything from clothing to household items

for as little as 10 cents during a sale. The shop will soon have its own custom area and separate entrance.

“It’s one of the ways we reach out to folks to get what they need at an affordable level,” Good said.

The congregation and the community have gotten behind the project wholeheartedly. A large portion of the funding came from the sale of an 80-acre farm willed to the church by the late Dorothy Randall, who had been a church member.

Another cash gift willed to the church also came from a member, the late Connie Chambers.

“The combination of those two planned giving gifts were key components,” Good said.

But the church’s parishioners also have been generous with monetary gifts and pledges to get the project done, as were some community minded residents.

When Good was first assigned to the congregation, there already was a passion and enthusiasm to get the addition built.

Now the dream is becoming a reality. The official groundbreaking ceremony was held Aug. 10.

Church members celebrated everything that has gone into it so far and asked God to bless their efforts to complete the building, Good said. They celebrated everyone who has put work into it, including the building committee, the volunteers and the donors.

“We are not only serving those in our congregation,” Good said, “but welcoming folks to the community.”

Although the family often lacked material luxuries, Marjorie’s example ensured they were rich in family togetherness and steeped in the Catholic faith – attendance at Sunday Mass was non-negotiable, Tom said. Marjorie herself never missed until just a few weeks before her death June 21 at the age of 97, he added.

“When there was arguing and fighting among the six kids, my mother would make us ‘kiss and make up’ and say, ‘I’m sorry,’ ” Mary said. “She taught us love and forgiveness and it made a difference. We’re still close.”

One son, the Rev. Francis “Frank” Meade, a priest, died in 1990. In 2006, Marjorie lost her husband and two daughters – Stephanie and Sheila.

Bob Schutter of Joliet, Sheila’s husband, said when he remarried, Marjorie lovingly accepted Bob’s new wife into the family, Bob said.

Although Marjorie had numerous inside jokes with members of her family, her imagination really shone when telling stories to the grandchildren, said Mary’s husband, Ronald Webb.

Loved ones even listened to criticism and advice from Marjorie, Ronald added.

“Instead of a dagger,” Ronald said, “she used well-cushioned words.”

CHANNAHON – The oldest of 13 children in a family of Methodists living in Hopedale, Marjorie Meade was just 18 when a visit to a Catholic church inspired her to convert, said Marjorie’s son, Tom Meade of Morris.

Marjorie’s father had this advice for Marjorie: Be the best Catholic you can be. So Marjorie did, Tom added, enough to inspire two of her six children to pursue religious life.

“She was a faith-filled woman, so prayerful, so strong.

I think that’s what got her through the loss of three children and her husband,” said Sr. Gemma “Jane” Meade of Massachusetts. “She was filled with wisdom and was generous with her time and money, a caring, loving person, very merciful.”

In 1939, after Marjorie graduated from Illinois State Normal Teachers College, she began teaching in Minooka, Tom said. That’s when she met Francis W. Meade, a farmer from generations of farmers, Tom said.

With Francis, this city girl – the one who taught herself how to play the piano, organ and flute, Tom said – began a cattle and hog farm on 300 rented acres and later bought their own farm in Channahon.

It is now a protected conservation area into perpetuity, Tom said. Marjorie dubbed it “Folly Acres,” said Mary Webb of Joliet, Marjorie’s daughter.

The farm proved profitable in many ways, such as producing 40 acres of tomatoes for the Campbell Soup Company, which it did for two years, Tom said. Marjorie stopped teaching until the youngest of her six children entered Channahon School, where Marjorie retired in 1973, he added.

“She looked after the needy students at the school and passed down our clothes to them,” Tom said. “A lot of these kids would have holes in the knees and be embarrassed to come to school. She would help them out that way, on the

Layoffs raise new issues in state hiring

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Pat Quinn’s unexpected move to deal with a scathing report about political hiring in his administration will not put the jobs scandal to rest as he mounts a difficult campaign for re-election.

Quinn aides announced last week that the state Department of Transportation was laying off 58 people at the center of a state investigator’s findings that more than 250 people were improperly hired for political reasons at the agency over the past decade. The report found that the questionable hiring of “staff assistants” accelerated under Quinn, despite his claims to have cleaned up the practices of his predecessor, Rod Blagojevich.

But the layoffs raise more questions about the administration’s handling of the issue, contradicting earlier decisions to merely reclassify rather than eliminate the positions. And they could open the state to lawsuits by the laid-off employees, something IDOT officials said they wanted to avoid last spring.

Rauner to keep up push for term limits

CHICAGO – Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner said not having a term limits measure on November’s ballot is a temporary setback.

He told reporters Sunday he’ll “campaign very aggressively” on term limits in both his bid to unseat Gov. Pat Quinn and on behalf of state lawmakers who commit to term limits. A new ad released Sunday focuses on term limits.

Courts deemed it unconstitutional. On Friday, the Illinois Supreme Court rejected a request to consider the measure, and the State Board of Elections certified a ballot without the question.

Rauner said even longtime Republicans officeholders he’s publicly praised – recently U.S. Rep. John Shimkus and state Sen. Chapin Rose – “should term-limit themselves.”

Ameren Illinois rolls out system upgrade

CHATHAM – Ameren Illinois is embarking on a 10year, $400 million overhaul of its natural gas distribution in central and southern Illinois.

The Springfield State Journal-Register said the upgrade begins this summer with the

replacement of 14,400 feet of steel gas line and 300 residential service lines in the central Illinois community of Chatham.

When the project is done, up to 350 miles of steel pipe will be replaced with polyethylene pipe.

The project includes upgrades to 70 stations that regulate gas from interstate pipelines and adds more than 450,000 socalled “smart meters.”

Ameren Illinois president and CEO Richard Mark said some of the pipe is 50 years old.

The company expects to add up to 80 full-time jobs for the project.

The system upgrade began with a 2013 state law.

New butterfly garden at Springfield site SPRINGFIELD – A new

butterfly garden at a historical site in Springfield was to be the setting for a talk by a biologist and gardening expert.

Susan Dees-Hargrove was set Sunday to share her experience gardening for moths and butterflies at the Dana-Thomas House State Historic Site.

She’s a biologist with the Illinois Department of Transportation and specializes in endangered species and wildlife habitats.

The Dana-Thomas House in Springfield was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1902. The site has a new butterfly garden installed by volunteers at the White Cottage, next door to the house. University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener volunteers will talk to visitors about the plants.

Flood victims being warned about scams

CHICAGO – A nonprofit consumer group is cautioning people who sustained flood damage in recent heavy rains to watch out for dishonest contractors.

Better Business Bureau President Steve Bernas said home and business owners should carefully consider repair contracts and not rush decisions.

The group suggested requesting bids from several companies and getting estimates in writing. Don’t automatically choose the lowest bidder, it said, and don’t make a full payment until all the work is finished satisfactorily. Pay no more than one-third of the cost upfront, the group said.

Actor-director Richard Attenborough dies at 90

By GREGORY KATZ The Associated Press LONDON – Acclaimed actor and Oscar-winning director Richard Attenborough, whose film career on both sides of the camera spanned 60 years, has died. He was 90.

The actor’s son, Michael Attenborough told the BBC that his father died Sunday. He had been in poor health for some

time.

Prime Minister David Cameron issued a statement calling Attenborough “one of the Richard greats of cineAttenborough ma.”

“His acting in ‘Brighton Rock’ was brilliant, his directing of ‘Gandhi’ was stunning,” Cameron said.

Ben Kingsley, who shot to global fame for his performance as Mahatma Gandhi, recalled Attenborough’s passionate 20 year struggle to bring Gandhi’s story to the big screen. The film won eight Oscars, including best picture, best director for Attenborough and best actor for Kingsley.

He appeared in a many major Hollywood films, directed a series of movies and was

known for his extensive work as a goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and other humanitarian causes.

As a director, Attenborough made several successful movies, from “Oh What a Lovely War” in 1969 to “Chaplin” and “Shadowlands” in the 1990s.

The generation that was introduced to Attenborough as an avuncular veteran actor in the 1990s – when he played the

failed theme park developer in “Jurassic Park” and Kriss Kringle in a remake of “Miracle on 34th Street” – may not have appreciated his dramatic range.

A small, energetic man with a round face that remained boyish even in old age, he was perfectly cast at the start of his career as the young sailor or airman of British movies during and after World War II.

She was employed with Guilford County Schools as a 4th grade teacher at Triangle Lake Montessori in High Point, NC. Lauren was a creative, loving and strong willed young woman and will be greatly missed.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Official: British Ebola patient to be evacuated FREETOWN, Sierra Leone – The first British citizen confirmed to be infected with the deadly Ebola disease is being evacuated from Sierra Leone on a jet sent by the Royal Air Force, a Sierra Leone official said Sunday.

The World Health Organization is also considering medical evacuation for a Senegalese health worker who has become infected in Sierra Leone, the U.N. health agency said.

Neither patient was identified by name.

The British patient was working at an Ebola treatment center in eastern Sierra Leone, the region most affected by the outbreak, said Sidie Yayah Tunis, director of communications for the Sierra Leone health ministry.

The Senegalese health worker is an epidemiologist deployed from a WHO partner organization, WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl said on Twitter.

The two cases highlight the risks facing health workers on the front lines of the battle against Ebola, which has killed more than 1,400 people across West Africa, according to the latest WHO figures.

Witnesses spotted two men in a tan- or gold-colored SUV at two of the three crime scenes in the San Fernando Valley area Sunday morning, said Sgt. Frank Preciado, a police spokesman.

While the victims appeared to be randomly targeted, investigators determined that the same type of weapon was used in the attacks and the manner of the shootings seems to be similar, he said.

The Los Angeles Police Department committed a lot of resources to investigate the shootings, he said, and added that authorities were releasing information about them in hopes of getting the public’s help in finding the suspects.

Syrian air base captured BEIRUT – Islamic State fighters captured a major military air base in northeastern Syria on Sunday, eliminating the last government-held outpost in a province otherwise dominated by the jihadi group, activists and state media said.

Strong California quake shakes famed wine country

By ELLEN KNICKMEYER The Associated Press NAPA, Calif. – The San Francisco Bay Area’s strongest earthquake in 25 years struck the heart of California’s wine country early Sunday, igniting gas-fed fires, damaging some of the region’s famed wineries and historic buildings, and sending more than 120 people to hospitals.

The magnitude-6.0 quake, centered near the city of Napa, an oasis of Victorian-era buildings nestled in the vineyard-studded hills of northern California, ruptured water mains and gas lines, hampering firefighters’ efforts to extinguish the blazes that broke out after the temblor struck at 3:20 a.m.

Dazed residents who had run out of their homes in the dark and were too fearful of aftershocks to go back to bed wandered through Napa’s historic downtown, where boulder-sized chunks of rubble and broken glass littered the streets. Dozens of homes and buildings across the Napa Valley were left unsafe to occupy, including an old county courthouse, where a 10-foot wide hole opened a view of the offices inside.

College student Eduardo Rivera said the home he shares with six relatives shook so violently that he kept getting knocked back into his bed as he tried to flee.

“When I woke up, my mom was screaming, and the sound from the earthquake was greater than my mom’s screams,” the 20-year-old Rivera said.

Gov. Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for southern Napa County, directing state agencies to respond with equipment and personnel.

Napa Fire Department Operations Chief John Callanan said the city had exhausted its own resources trying to extinguish at least six fires after 60 water mains ruptured.

Tax refunds may get hit due to health law credits

Who wants to think about taxes around Labor Day? But if you count on your tax refund and you’re one of the millions getting tax credits to help pay health insurance premiums under President Barack Obama’s law, it’s not too early.

Here’s why: If your income for 2014 is going to be higher than you estimated when you applied for health insurance, then complex connections between the health law and taxes

your tax refund next year.

Maybe you’re collecting more commissions in an improving economy. Or your spouse got a better job. It could trigger an unwelcome surprise.

The danger is that as your income grows, you don’t qualify for as much of a tax credit.

Any difference will come out of your tax refund, unless you have promptly reported the changes.

Nearly 7 million households have gotten health insurance tax credits, and major tax preparation companies say

“More than a third of tax credit recipients will owe some money back, and (that) can lead to some pretty hefty repayment liabilities,” said George Brandes, vice president for health care programs at Jackson Hewitt Tax Service.

Two basic statistics bracket the potential exposure: The average tax credit for subsidized coverage on the new health insurance exchanges is $264 a month, or $3,168 for a full 12 months.

The average tax refund is about $2,690.

Having to pay back even as little as 10 percent of your tax credit can reduce your refund by several hundred dollars.

Tax giant H&R Block says consumers whose incomes grew as the year went on should act now and contact HealthCare.gov or their state insurance exchange to update their accounts.

They will pay higher health insurance premiums for the rest of this year, but they can avoid financial pain come spring.

“As time goes on, the ability to make adjustments diminishes,” warned Mark Ci-

aramitaro, H&R Block’s vice president of health care services. “Clients count on that refund as their biggest financial transaction of the year.

When that refund goes down, it really has reverberations.”

The Obama administration says it’s constantly urging newly insured consumers to report changes that could affect their coverage.

But those messages don’t drive home the point about tax refunds.

“What probably isn’t clear is that there may be consequences at tax time,” said Ciaramitaro.

Brown, who was unarmed when he was killed, became an instant symbol of racial injustice as protesters flooded into the streets after his death. “He didn’t like not knowing where to fit in life. ... He was kind-hearted, a little kid in a big body. He was intimidating looking, but I don’t think he ever was disrespectful to me.”

JERUSALEM – Israel’s prime minister is trying to capitalize on the gruesome video of an American journalist’s beheading by the Islamic State extremist group, saying Hamas is an equally vicious foe as he tries to rally international support in Israel’s war in the Gaza Strip. But the comparisons between Hamas and Islamic State are being met with reservations by Israel’s allies and enemies alike.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu always has prided himself on his ability to attract media attention. Netanyahu, who grew up in the U.S. and speaks fluent English, often uses catchy quips, props or visual aids in public speeches or briefings to journalists.

A day after the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS, posted the video of journalist James Foley’s killing, Netanyahu debuted his latest catchphrase: “Hamas is ISIS. ISIS is Hamas.” He voiced the slogan at a news conference, on Twitter and even at his weekly Cabinet meeting Sunday.

As Israel’s military campaign against Hamas in Gaza nears its eighth week, Netanyahu is fighting an uphill battle for international support. While the international community generally sup-

ports Israel’s right to defend itself against indiscriminate rocket fire, the world has grown increasingly uncomfortable with the scenes coming out of Gaza.

Hundreds of Israeli airstrikes, along with tank and artillery fire, have killed more than 2,100 people and caused widespread destruction. U.N. and Palestinian officials say most of the dead have been civilians, including some 500 children.

With powerful images of flattened buildings and dead children coming out of Gaza each day, Israel’s argument that the civilians have been used as “human shields” by Hamas seems to be making little difference to perceptions abroad. Sixty-eight people have been killed on the Israeli side, all but four of them soldiers.

“There is complete agreement, almost a consensus, that [the Islamic State group] is a monstrous organization.

But there is no international agreement that Hamas is a monstrous organization,” veteran Israeli television commentator Moti Kirschenbaum said.

Perhaps with this distinction in mind, Netanyahu has tried to frame the military operation in Gaza not as a local conflict, but as part of a broader global fight against a unified Islamist threat.

How do we keep teens safe when they’re on road?

We’ve all heard the stories and seen the results of more teens who were killed in automobile accidents.

The headlines and statistics point to a combustible combination of young drivers and fatal crashes. Sixteen-year-olds are involved almost six times more often in automobile accidents than drivers between the ages of 30 and 59, according to the Institute for Highway Safety.

Do you know the spark plug for many of the fatal accidents these young drivers are involved in? Alcohol.

The Insurance Institute said alcohol is a major part of the problem and that spikes continue to increase each year among teenage drivers.

Inexperienced and young drivers are asked to make quick decisions behind the wheel. As parents, we can engage in only so many “what if” scenarios with them before we allow them on the road. Experience definitely makes for better driving habits, but the alcohol factor makes for a dangerous and destructive scenario.

We hope our youth will abide by the rules of the road, and we can offer them plenty of examples of all the bad things that can happen to them when they are out on the road.

There are questions that parents and guardians need to ask themselves before allowing their child to drive. How can I help my teenage driver – not drink and drive, text, become distracted or any other scenario while they are behind the wheel?

The simple answer is: Keep talking, keep their attention – and above, all keep insisting they follow the rules of the road. Their safety can become the catalyst for better and more mature driving decisions. We need to take a stance and insist they not drink and drive, answer their phones or text behind the wheel. Perhaps then the statistics will travel the other way.

By Stephanie Kohl Officially established in August 1964, the Manhattan Park District celebrates its fiftieth anniversary this year.

The park district was started by a district board and community that raised money to create a park district, simply because they wanted one.

The mission of the Manhattan Park District is to provide quality recreation and education programs, facilities, parks and open space that meet the leisure needs and improve the quality of life for residents of Manhattan. Facilities will be available to all residents and the interests and needs of all age groups will be addressed.

According to the Manhattan Chamber of Commerce website, Manhattan Park District has several parks and tot lots, with the main park being Central Park, located behind the downtown area on Park Road.

Central Park boasts three rental areas, including the Large Pavilion, North Pavilion and Room and South Pavilion, a fishing pond, sand volleyball court, horseshoe pit, baseball

field, multi-purpose field, two playgrounds, basketball court, tennis court and skate park.

The Manhattan Park District also hosts several special events throughout the year, including the adult luncheon, NEOS Night (a safe, supervised, action-packed youth program held once per month), an Easter egg hunt, Civil War days, family campout, Labor Day Fun Days and Walk n’Roll-a-thon.

Manhattan Park District puts out program brochures three times a year for programs offered throughout the year. Programs range from crafts and art activities to music programs, athletics, technology, fitness and more. Programs are offered for toddlers through seniors and fill fast.

Also popular are the park district’s bus trips for adults, visiting places like Hollywood Boulevard, Mount Rushmore, Dancing Horses Dinner Theatre and more. These trips also fill up fast.

The South offensive line might be the biggest strength on the team as it returns four starters in a unit that averages 6-foot-2, 267 pounds.

“Everything comes down to being able to execute,” Bublitz said. “But we’re primarily a spread team, no-huddle offense that is best suited for us for the type of kids that we have and we’ll adjust to the personnel that we have.”

JOLIET – As the Plainfield South football program enters its 13th season, coach Ken Bublitz is hoping it will be a lucky 13 and that his Cougars can build on after having made the playoffs three of the last four years.

The Cougars have a program record of 53-61 (.465 winning percentage).

“We have had success,” Bublitz said. “We want to build on that success, and we know what it takes to get there and now, we need to make sure we do what is necessary in the offseason and during the summer or during practice to prepare us to be successful.”

Bublitz is entering his fourth year as head coach at South and his teams are 15-14 (.517).

“Programs that are consistently successful have as part of their culture the belief that they know what it takes to be successful,” Bublitz said. “We hope our seniors on down have that.”

South averaged just under 31 points a game last year, outscoring their opponents, 306-276. The Cougars to look to a converted wideout, senior Braden Lentini, to quarterback the offense this year.

“We have so many options with our offense that anybody can be a threat at anytime,” Lentini said. “It really depends on how the defense lines up that could determine what we run and what coach decides to do.

RECOVERING FROM ‘PERFECT STORM’ After injuries, issues and a winless 2013 season, Wildcats ‘excited’ for 2014 PLAINFIELD – Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis said it best: “Just Win, Baby.”

After going winless in 2013, Plainfield Central football coach John Jackson and his Wildcats are keeping things simple and keeping to that same uniformed theme – just win.

“Last year we had some issues that we had to deal with as a program,” Jackson said. “In addition to that we had tons of injuries. We figured out that we had 29 injuries total that at any

given time kept kids out of the lineup for a few weeks or more. It was really more of a perfect storm last year.

“We as coaches and the players addressed those issues during the offseason. We had great weightlifting numbers and had a great three-day camp at Elmhurst College.”

Plainfield Central averaged only nine points a game last year as the Wildcats were outscored by their opponents, 402-81. The returning starting quarterback, senior Matthew Gurke (6-foot-5, 195 pounds) is confident those offensive numbers will be better this year.

“We didn’t have many big plays last year but this year we have bigger and better receivers, a bigger line and just overall we feel like we have a better offense than last year,” Gurke said.

The returning offensive guards, seniors Jordan Middleton (6-2, 250) and Zack Zolnierowicz (6-0, 220) are experienced and will be counted on to establish the running game and provide the protection Gurke will require to run the offense.

“We’re all real excited about this year,” Middleton said. “There’s been a lot of great work done during the offseason and we just want to prove

ourselves out on the field.”

“I feel that our line is sticking like glue and that we’ll be a force to be reckoned with,” Zolnierowicz said.

“We have a great overall attitude and everybody just wants to win.”

Seniors Akwasi Aikins (6-1, 200) and Roger Thigpen (6-1, 180) will see plenty of action at the running back position.

Defensively, the Wildcats will be younger. The major emphasis will be to limit the number of big plays given up.

“Giving up big plays last year was a problem,” Thigpen said. “I think this year we have a pretty versatile defense. Everybody has a job to do on defense and we’re all accountable and we know that we’re going to go all out for our brothers.”

“We have to be physical, and we have to be smart out on the field and have fun,” Jackson said. “There were times last year where we would be one or the other and it cost us.”

Central will play the same schedule of teams this year as last but will start the season with three of the first four games at home, which could be just the spark the Wildcats need.

“It’ll be nice to be at home the first few games,” Jackson said. “I really like the bunch of kids. It’s a good group of kids that work hard and do everything you ask them to do and whether we win or lose, I’m going to feel great coaching these kids.”

Porters have new coach this season

By DENNIS NELSON Shaw Media correspondent LOCKPORT – The Lockport football team is hoping some change will do it good.

Not only will the Porters feature a new coach in Lockport resident Dan Starkey, but its field is going through renovations. Starkey is hoping the same can be done for the Porters’ attitude.

“The biggest thing I’m looking for is we want to develop a team the community can be proud of and develop a championship attitude,” said Starkey, 59-44 during stints at Glenbard South and New Trier. “We want to play with great desire and heart. We want to make the communities that feed into Lockport proud about the way we play the game.

“If we do that, great things will happen.”

Lockport went 3-6 overall and 3-4 in the Southwest Suburban Blue in coach Don McKillips’ third and final season a year ago. The Porters did not beat a team with a winning record last year and have one home victory the past two seasons.

The Starkey era will begin Friday at Downers Grove North.

“If you go out and play together and as hard as you possibly can and still end up on the short end of the stick, you can hold your head up high knowing that you played as hard as you possibly could,” Starkey said. “That’s what I’m

“Our kids have had a very good offseason and I’ve been

really impressed with the work ethic they’ve shown in the weight room,” Starkey said. “The kids are getting more and more confident with the system. I’m really excited about the potential we have.”

A detriment will be playing the season without the services of a returning All-Southwest Suburban Conference Blue running back, senior Tyler Johnson.

Johnson, who took second in Class 3A at 195 pounds in wrestling, is out with a torn ACL. He led the team with 60 tackles and 405 rushing yards a year ago to go along with five touchdowns.

“Tyler Johnson is probably one of our biggest leaders on the team despite not being on the field,” Starkey said. “He’s not happy with it, but that’s his role. He hopes to be back in time for wrestling.”

Back from a year ago with high hopes for a turnaround season are several seniors: quarterback Jeremy Quade, fullback Cory Savage, receiver Jon Zapotoczny, receiver Sean Kelley, linebacker Taylor O’Donnell and linemen Chris Murino, Jake Divita, Jordan Pollard and Carl Strom.

Juniors entering their second varsity season include quarterback/defensive back Deiondre Taylor, offensive lineman Matt Chmielewski and linebacker Mo Atiq.

Quade, who also plays safety, and Taylor, who was a cornerback a year ago, are battling for the start at quarterback. “They are both going to be on the field somewhere,” Starkey said.

The Porters will look to their experienced returnees to anchor the lines of scrimmage.

“It all starts up front and we have the ability to be very good,” Starkey said. “Matt Chimelewski is only a junior but a two-year starter and a Division I prospect. Chris Marino is another guy coming back on our offensive line.

“Defensively, we feel we can be physical up front and Taylor O’Donnell will anchor us at linebacker.”

The main targets on offense will be Zapotoczny, Quade, Taylor and Kelley.

“With their experience on offense, they have to be weapons for us and have to make plays when given the opportunity,” Starkey said.

“We’re trying to develop a championship attitude in everything we do,” Starkey said. “No matter what the score is or what the situation is off the field, that’s what we’ve talked about.

Spartans don’t want ROMEOVILLE to rest on their laurels SPARTANS

By DENNIS NELSON Shaw Media correspondent ROMEOVILLE – The Romeoville football program is at a crossroads.

A year after reaching the Class 6A playoffs for the first time since 2002, many wonder if the Spartans are a one-hit wonder or have some staying power.

The question will be answered, in part, starting with the season opener Friday at Hinsdale South.

“We’re looking to go further than we did last year,” senior captain and linebacker Anthony Hernandez said of the Spartans’ 5-5 playoff season of 2013.

“Last year, we took the first step and we expect to do much bigger things this year.”

“I give the seniors a lot of credit, but a large part of our success last year goes to the juniors who are now seniors,” Romeoville coach Jeff Kuna said, entering his seventh season. “That’s where most of our yardage and point production came from. They learned from the seniors, had a good offseason and they want to take what they did last year and do better.”

A dozen returnees anchor the Spartans on the two sides of the ball.

Among them are senior quarterback Kelvin Jones, senior running back Gil Whitaker and senior receiver/ cornerback Charles Hunter.

“Those are three all-conference players and in my opinion three of the better players in this area,” Kuna said. “(Junior) Manual Nartey is a very good receiver who gets overlooked at times. He gives us a nice combination outside to go along with our running game.”

Jones threw for 1,537 yards and 18 touchdowns a year ago.

His favorite target was Hunter, who caught 45 passes for 923 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Nartey added 276 receiving yards and three touchdowns.

“On the offensive side, we’re bringing back a lot of experience, especially at the skill positions,” Kuna said. “We have three returning offensive linemen, which is going to help out a lot. We feel good about their potential.”

The returning linemen are seniors Prosper Osinloye, Jason Sims and Damien Vasquez.

Defensively, the Spartans return senior linebackers Hernandez and Anthony Kopel, junior linebacker Justin Brandon and senior cornerbacks D’lante Dawson and Hunter.

Brandon was second on the team a year ago with 67 tackles.

“We had a lot of underclassmen stepping up in the weight room,” Hernandez said. “We had a lot of guys working on the little things that are going to make a big difference. Every day, we’re trying to get better.”

Kuna said. “We return three linebackers and two corners.

Up front, we’re learning and we have some guys who are going to have to step up and play for us.”

Kuna expects most of the returnees to play multiple positions on both sides of the ball.

“Our guys are going to be asked to do a lot on both sides of the ball,” Kuna said. “We have quite a few guys playing on both sides of the ball. They have to be in good physical and mental condition because we’re going to ask them to do things they’ve never done.”

The difference between another playoff team and a losing season?

“The want,” Hernandez said. “We made the first round last year and we were happy, but that’s not good enough. We want to go further. We’re going to find out who wants it more every week.”

Celtics, Porters hope state is in their futures

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – A year ago, the boys golf teams from Providence Catholic and Lockport came up short of qualifying for trips to the state golf meet.

So getting to Illinois State University’s Weibring Golf Club for this year’s state meet is high on the list of goals for both the Celtics and Porters.

And although one week’s worth of performances certainly is no guarantee for future success this fall, the early efforts of both teams is definitely an encouraging sign for Providence, which missed out on state by two strokes last year.

After winning invite titles at St. Laurence and Lemont, and placing second to top-ranked Hinsdale Central at Addison Trail, the Celtics saved their best for last this past week.

At Saturday’s Mount Carmel Invite, Providence easily captured top honors after turn-

ing in a 285 total – what’s believed to be a program-best.

Celtics coach John Platt liked what he had seen from his team through Friday’s win, so it’s a good bet that he’s very pleased with the opening week.

“We shot 300 at the first event and had 31 birdies as a team, which was good to see,” Platt said. “Against Hinsdale Central, we shot a 303, and they beat us by 12 strokes; and we beat Lyons Township, who supposedly is third in the state.

And on Friday, we shot 299, with the kids not starting out not great at the beginning, but they fought back.

“We have four seniors and basically two sophomores playing right now, and two of them have been playing since they were freshmen. How much they’ve matured in those four years is unbelievable. We’re eight or nine deep, and all of them can shoot 80 or better at any time; and I think that any one of my top four kids can be No. 1 at any time.”

Lockport made a 20-stroke improvement from its opening effort at Bloomington to Friday’s Lemont Shoot-Out at Broken Arrow Golf Course.

The Porters, who fell four strokes shy of a state trip last year and two the year before that, believe they’re good enough to make their first state appearance since 2006.

“We’ve been right there

some years but have gone up against other good schools and had some rough things happen to us,” Porters coach Matt Eber said. “These guys have been working really hard, and they’re quality players. If they go out and shoot their games, I think that we have a shot to be really good team, and we’ll see how far that takes us.

“One of the goals that each

of our kids had was to get the team to state. So it’s really a focus of theirs, as it’s been the last three years. We keep preaching team and playing together, even though it’s an individual sport. We’ve been promoting that, and the kids are buying in to it and they’re all thinking about team goals right now.”

Another squad thinking about getting back to state is Lemont. It was bumped up to Class 3A the past two years but is back in 2A, where it qualified for five straight years through 2011, when it finished in third place.

“After they changed to three classes, we went downstate each year,” Indians coach Mark Hollatz said. “But the last two years we were the smallest school in 3A, where we shoot good, but the competition is so fierce. So we go from being the small fish in 3A to the big fish in 2A. That’s a nice little carrot that’s out there for the kids, something to shoot for.”

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Tsuyoshi Wada was disappointed he didn’t pitch better when he was in the Baltimore Orioles organization.

He made an impression on his former team Sunday.

The left-hander held the Orioles hitless for six innings before allowing Steve Pearce’s leadoff homer in the seventh inning for Baltimore’s only hit, and the Cubs won, 2-1, for a threegame sweep.

“I knew a lot of the players on their team. I feel like I let people down not being able to be a factor on the

team,” Wada said through a translator. “So I try to be the player that they thought they acquired.”

Wada (4-1) got a popout after the homer that landed on Waveland Avenue and departed to a standing ovation from the crowd of 32,774. Slammers sweep series with doubleheader victory SUBMITTED REPORT CRESTWOOD – On the heels of suffering a home sweep against Rockford, there was only one way to go for the Joliet Slammers in their next few games.

And that’s what happened, when the Slammers closed out their road schedule with a three-game set at Windy City in Frontier League play.

After claiming a 7-1 win in Friday’s opener, Joliet had

to wait until Sunday to wrap things up with a doubleheader, and it was rewarded for the wait with 3-1 and 5-0 victories. Beside sweeping the series, the Slammers only allowed a pair of runs in the three games.

In Sunday’s second game, winner Andrew Busby allowed four hits through five innings, and John Maloney gave up one hit and struck out four in the final two innings.

dunland@shawmedia.com MOKENA – Barbara Finkelstein of Mokena has seen dogs suffering in vehicles and understands the danger. It accidentally happened to her dog and to a dog she rescued from a parking lot last summer.

Both dogs were fine, she said.

So when Finkelstein – a volunteer with Crossroads Shih Tzu Rescue in New Lenox (www.crossroadsrescue.org) – saw the Petplan pet insurance “Drive to Bark” petition on Facebook, she immediately signed it.

The petition’s goal is to enact a law prohibiting owners from leaving animals unattended and confined in vehicles, said Ernie Ward, a veterinarian, author, lecturer and part of the team that initiated the petition.

Fifteen states including Illinois already have laws in place, but the goal is to have a law in place that covers all 50 states, Ward said. If a petition has enough support, White House staff will review it, according to petitions. whitehouse.gov/how-why/ introduction.

To make that happen, “Driven to Bark” needs 100,000 signatures in 30 days, Ward said. According to the online petition, more than 12,000 people had signed it as of Saturday. The deadline for signing the petition is Sept. 2, Ward said.

Finkelstein said people don’t always realize how quickly a vehicle’s interior will heat up. They may think, “Oh, I can just run in really fast and everything will be fine,” but that’s not the case.

In less than half an hour, the interior temperature of a car rises by 30 degrees, she said.

Finkelstein clearly recalls the dog she saw trapped inside a locked car in a parking lot.

The dog had crawled behind the back seat and was panting hard. She could not locate its owner, so she called police to free the dog and cool it down with a hose. Situations like this one, Finkelstein said, mean legislation is needed.

Granted, not everyone who leaves a dog in a car is thoughtless or uncaring, Finkelstein said. Sometimes pet owners may believe they are taking proper precautions and still wind up with a problem, as Finkelstein herself discovered.

Coming home from the vet on a 73-degree day with one of her dogs in tow, Finkelstein stopped at a drugstore to fill a prescription. She could not take the dog inside with her, so she took every precaution, she said. She parked in the shade and cracked open the windows.

Nine minutes later, Finkelstein returned to a distressed, panting, overheated dog. It’s not that Finkelstein doesn’t understand dogs or their needs. She has an 8-yearold Chihuahua mix named

Raider, a 6-year-old Shih Tzu named Cha Cha and her current foster, 5-year-old Bridget.

But like many pet owners, Finkelstein had accidentally underestimated the threshold for those needs. That’s why Ward produced the “How Hot Does it Get in a Car” video – which has nearly 2 million views on YouTube – and why Petplan sought his help in writing this petition, Ward said.

“This is a serious issue,” Ward said. “Untold numbers of dogs die each year because there aren’t any laws to cover it. When instances occur, it’s an owner accident – end of story.”

“Even if the dog does not

die, there’s internal damage, especially to the kidneys – one of the organs most susceptible to damage from heat,” Ward said. “Even under the best conditions – just running into the store and coming back – there can be irreversible damage.”

Ward said he doesn’t want to dissuade anyone from the pleasure of a nice car ride with their dogs, as Ward also enjoys it. He has two rescue mutts – Sandy, 11 and Harry, 3. He just wants to protect vulnerable pets from horrific deaths caused by lack of common sense.

“If people see a child or an animal that’s left unattended in a car,” Ward said, “they need to contact the authorities.”

Former dog owner Tim Howe of Manhattan said he also learned about “Driven to Bark” on Facebook, signed it and shared it with friends involved in animal rescue.

Howe feels the same way about this petition as he does about leash laws.

“Hopefully,” Howe said, “this will remind people that the laws are there to protect the animals.”

Squirrel saved from drowning on Fox River

At the bridge table, you must actively observe. And when you are on defense, you have to decide whether to round up a posse and go out actively hunting for tricks, or to sit at home and passively wait for declarer to knock on your door and give you tricks.

This week we will study the various factors that affect your choice. First, though, look at the West hand and the auction in today’s diagram. What would you lead against four spades?

In the auction, South might have rebid three hearts because North could have held three spades and four or five hearts, when four hearts would probably have been the right game. But raising immediately to four spades kept the defenders in the dark.

When being active on defense, you lead from honors or very short suits; when passive, you often start with a trump.

On the majority of deals, it will be right to defend actively. And that applies here. If West leads a trump, South will win, draw a second round, cash his two club honors, go to dummy with a trump, and discard his two diamonds on the club ace and queen.

Then he will attack hearts, losing two tricks there but coming home with an overtrick.

Instead, if West leads the diamond two, the contract – surprise, surprise – can be defeated. East can take the trick with the ace and shift to his singleton heart. West wins two tricks in that suit and gives his partner a heart ruff for down one.

ADVICE Baby’s adoption will leave hole in grandmother’s heart Dear Abby: My teenaged daughter will be giving birth soon, and she has decided to place her baby for adoption. I told her whatever she decides, I will support her decision.

Here is the difficult part: This will still be my biological grandchild. When this beautiful child is lovingly handed over to the adoptive parents, I will be losing a grandchild. I am already in mourning.

Lifestyle changes, air-pressure devices help treat sleep apnea Dear Dr. K: Is there a surgical fix for sleep apnea? I’ve tried CPAP and a couple of other treatments, and none of them work well for me.

Dear Reader: Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing stops intermittently, or becomes shallower, during sleep. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common form.

OSA occurs when muscles in the back of your throat relax as you sleep. This causes the airway – the space in the back of your throat through which air passes when you breathe – to periodically collapse. If air can’t get into your lungs, oxygen levels in your lungs drop, which then causes oxygen levels in your blood to drop. That’s not good: Every cell in your body needs the oxygen that the blood brings them.

If air can’t get out of your lungs, a waste product – carbon dioxide gas – can’t get expelled from your body. This changes your blood chemistry in several ways, including making it more acid. That also is unhealthy.

Your sleeping brain is smart enough to recognize the carbon dioxide level is too high and the oxygen level is too low. This causes a person with obstructive sleep apnea to suddenly awaken and gasp for air – sometimes hundreds

Treatment usually starts with lifestyle changes, such as losing weight or sleeping on your side instead of your back.

But the gold standard (and most commonly used) treatment for OSA is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). CPAP uses an air-pressure device connected by a hose to a mask that you wear over your nose while sleeping. The air pressure opens your airway, preventing it from collapsing when muscles relax during sleep. This allows you to breathe regularly, without interruption.

Newer treatment devices, which also rely on air pressure, are similar to CPAP, but less cumbersome. And dental devices exist that reposition the jaw and tongue to aid in breathing. Ask your doctor about these options if you haven’t already tried them.

Surgical treatment options for OSA do exist, but they do not have good success rates. Surgical

options include: • UPPP (uvulopalatopharyngoplasty) surgery removes tissue from the throat. Many patients who have this surgery need further upper airway surgery or need to use CPAP. • Somnoplasty uses radiofrequency waves to shrink obstructive tissues.

• Corrective jaw surgery moves the upper or lower jaw forward to enlarge the upper airway. It changes facial appearance and tooth alignment and entails a long recovery period.

• Palatal implants stiffen the soft tissue at the back of the roof of the mouth so it doesn’t relax as much during sleep.

A new experimental procedure shows promise. The hypoglossal nerve activates the muscles in the back of the throat – the muscles that relax too much and cause the airway to collapse. A nerve stimulator (which is connected to a little battery placed inside the body) seems to help keep the airway open.
