Postcard photographs of motels often centered on the essential architectural elements of the structure, and any highway, road, or driveway are often missing traffic or congestion in the image.

Automobiles arriving or departing are seldom seen in the views, and this is unusual as the mobility offered by vehicles were the life-blood of the motel industry.

Nonetheless, the automobiles shown in some images are thought to belong to the people staying at the motels and are invariably shown at rest, parked presumably in front of the driver’s motel room.

In the late 1940s, most motels along the Lincoln Highway were arranged in an open U shape or L shape design. The office was no longer front and center but located to the left or right of the architectural layout.

This allowed for increased space for the sign, which was located on its own, away from the motel and near the street.

By the 1950s, many motels have cleared away native plants and trees and replaced them with non-native or exotic varieties applied in neat arrangements surrounding the buildings.

During the same decade, large arrows were popular additions to signs as they served both to direct customers to the motel from a distance and provide a decorative element to the sign itself.

Hundreds ride to honor Mokena serviceman killed in 2014

By SARWAT AHMAD Shaw Media correspondent MOKENA – As a gentle rain drizzled Sunday morning over Mokena, hundreds of riders revved their motorcycle engines to life as they started a 50-mile inaugural charity run to honor the memory of fallen local hero Aaron Toppen.

Toppen, 19, was among five American troops who died June 9, 2014, in southern Afghanistan in one of the deadliest friendly-fire incidents in the war’s history. Military officials believe the air strike was called in after the Taliban Aaron ambushed Top- Toppen pen’s unit.

More than 360 riders and passengers, escorted by local law enforcement, followed Toppen’s white pickup truck – driven by his friends – from which the American and U.S. Army flags waved them on.

Behind Toppen’s truck was a black Mustang carrying Toppen’s sisters, Amy Toppen and Amanda Gralewski; his niece, Taylor Gralewski; his uncle, Jack Winter; and fiancée, Jackie Rozek.

Behind them, despite the rain and a foot injury two weeks ago, his mother, Pam – head held up in pride – rode with United Souls Motorcycle Club rider Dan Periera.

The journey took the riders past St. John’s Cemetery in Mokena where Toppen is buried, and where Mokena’s VFW color guard greeted them. They then looped around Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood before returning to the Pipefitters Training Center Local 597 in Mokena.

“That is hallowed ground,” event coordinator Troy Walker told the riders in the opening ceremony. “Let the subtle roar of your bikes let those heroes know that we are there

for them.”

The event was planned months ago as a vision of Walker’s, a ride captain with the Illinois Patriot Guard, who had gotten to know Toppen’s family when his remains were brought home last summer.

Early on, there were worries the threatening clouds would deter supporters, but ultimately hundreds of enthusiastic riders and passengers, as well as friends, members of the community, veterans and local politicians, filled the hall

of the training center.

“It has been a great turnout,” Amy Toppen said. “It is not surprising because we have received a huge amount of support, which has helped us get by, especially during the bad days.”

Riders were charged $20, and passengers and attendees of the memorial ceremony were charged $10. Additional funding came from vendor rentals and raffle ticket sales.

aschier@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Joliet man was killed Sunday morning and a female wounded when they were shot while in their vehicle.

Sjontre Thompson, 22, was pronounced dead at 2:11 a.m. after an incident at 1418 Englewood Ave., according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Joliet Police Deputy Chief Al Roechner said Sunday afternoon police were called to the address at about 1:20 a.m. and found Thompson in the vehicle shot in the chest and through both legs. A female driver also was shot in the right thigh.

Thompson was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, where he was pronounced dead. The driver was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, Roechner said.

The preliminary investigation shows the two were shot while sitting in the vehicle behind the residence.

It appears they were approached by an unknown male wearing dark clothing who shot at them and then took off.

As of Sunday afternoon, po-

lice still had no one in custody, Roechner said.

Thompson’s is the second gun-related death in Joliet this weekend. The incidents are unrelated, Roechner said.

An autopsy is scheduled for Sunday, according to the coroner’s office. The final cause of death is pending police, autopsy and toxicology reports.

Shador M. Jenkins, 28, also of Joliet, was killed Friday night after he was shot in the head while allegedly rushing the gunman with a steak knife, according to police and coroner reports.

Roechner said Saturday the alleged shooter, Joliet resident Dwayne L. Johnson, 22, was arrested and charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon.

Witnesses reported Jenkins and another man had a disagreement with a group of three people at the 400 block of Wallace Street, according to Roechner. Jenkins allegedly went after Johnson with a steak knife before Johnson allegedly fired four shots, one hitting Jenkins in the head, and another hitting the 23-year-old with Jenkins in the hand.

That victim was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

JOLIET – Another group of residents is trying to fight a trucking business that wants to move into the neighborhood.

“We have a nice little piece of property – a nice neighborhood,” said Rich Graham, who has lived on Spencer Road for five years. “We’re concerned they’re going to bring trucking. That road’s not built for trucking.”

There’s even a sign that prohibits trucks on Spencer Road, Graham’s neighbors said.

But they are concerned the residential area between Briggs Street and the Joliet Country Club will become overrun with trucks now that a company wants to set up a terminal there.

Sun City Transportation Corp. wants to build a 10,000-square-foot building with four loading docks and a parking lot that can accommodate up to 30 trucks in the Spencer Road Industrial Park.

The plan pales in comparison to some of the massive projects being developed in another industrial park about a mile to the southwest – twin 1.4-million-squarefoot buildings for Ikea and a 500,000-square-foot Amazon retail fulfillment center.

Residents in that area – around the Laraway Crossings Business Park – protested

the added trucks destined for Route 53, which already has become a site of traffic trouble.

Neighbors of the Spencer Road Industrial Park, which is only starting to be developed, are worried Sun City Transportation is the first of multiple businesses that will bring trucking operations close to their homes.

Sun City Transportation owner Darius Kumpys was baffled by the opposition and said his is a small, family-owned company.

Kumpys said there is likely to be only a couple trucks at the terminal at any given time.

“Our trucks are months on the road,” Kumpys said.

“Now in Minooka, I have two trucks. That’s all.”

Sun City Transportation has a terminal in Minooka and a parking site in Crest Hill. The Joliet site would allow him to bring his operation together, Kumpys said.

He has applied for a special use permit that would allow the terminal to be built at 1611 Workers Court, a street in the industrial park where growth was stunted several years ago by the recession.

The city previously approved a special use permit for a trucking company that never was built on the site.

City staff has recommended approval for Sun City Transportation.

Kumpys learned of the

neighbors’ opposition Thursday just minutes before the start of a meeting of the Zoning Board of Appeals, which was to decide whether he would get the special use permit. About 20 area residents were in the room. Kumpys asked that the matter be tabled, which it was.

Margie Cepon, a spokeswoman for the neighborhood, said the proposed terminal is too close to nearby residents.

That proximity to residences is one issue the residents have.

She also said Workers Court lets out onto Spencer Road rather than Briggs Street, meaning trucks will be headed toward the nearest homes.

“The only access is to Spencer Road,” Cepon said.

“There is no way it [Spencer Road] can handle that capacity. There is no planning being done for this industrial park.”

Cepon said the petition for the special use permit is incomplete and dismisses important questions on the form, especially one that asks whether the project would have an impact on the general welfare. The answer on the petition is, “No impact.”

Cepon pointed to the neighbors standing around her outside the room where the zoning board had just tabled the matter until Sept. 17.

“They’re terrified of trucks,” she said.

Grass carp must be ordered by Sept. 25. All other orders must be received by Oct. 5. Orders are pre-paid only.

Tree orders will be available for pickup from noon to 6 p.m.

Joliet to address Republic Avenue water main issues

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Some popular businesses were disrupted for three straight days in July because of an aging water main breaking down.

The city utilities director plans to put the water main on Republic Avenue on a list of replacements scheduled for 2016.

But one City Council member last week said he would like to see a temporary fix in the meantime for the main that runs between Jefferson Street and Glenwood Avenue.

The July breakdowns meant no water for at least parts of the day for Maurie’s Table restaurant, the Motor Mat Car Wash and several other businesses, including Karen’s Pet Grooming.

“There were three in a matter of three days,” said Karen’s

Pet Grooming owner Karen Bartolomei, who said she lost water July 24 to 26.

City officials said there were breaks two days, and the main was shut down a third day for repairs.

Bartolomei said the city was “pretty efficient” in fixing the water main breaks and gave her advanced notice of when water was being shut off for repairs.

Councilman Jim McFarland, however, said the shutdowns create big problems for restaurants and businesses, such as the car wash, that cannot operate without water.

“You could have a restaurant full of people, and all of a sudden there’s no water,” McFarland said.

Republic Avenue also is home to Jody’s Hot Dogs and a dentist’s office.

the council’s Public Service Committee, asked staff at the committee’s meeting Aug. 17 to consider installing a valve.

The valve could be used to keep water running for half of the street when a main has to be repaired.

Utilities Director James Eggen agreed the water main needs work. Eggen said he is preparing a list of main replacements planned for 2016, and Republic Avenue “is one of our critical areas.”

“Looking at the condition of the main, it would be our preference to put in a new main and be done with the area,” Eggen said. “Putting in a valve doesn’t really solve the problem.”

He estimated the cost of putting in a valve at $20,000 to $25,000. McFarland said he still would like to see a valve installed until the main is replaced.

New transition coordinator brings her passion to D-204

JOLIET – Tracey Marshall has a passion for helping students with special needs, especially those who need to transition to life outside of school.

Last week, Marshall became the new coordinator for the Adaptive Vocational and Academic Center and Transition Center programs at Joliet Township High School District Tracey 204. She comes Marshall from the Chicago Autism Academy in Frankfort, where she served as assistant principal.

Now she will lead programs that prepare students with developmental disabilities to successfully transition to adult life.

Marshall said she’s always talked about the quality of those programs and how District 204 is a wonderful place to work.

Students with developmental disabilities can receive services under the AVAC program, which focuses on community experience, vocational preparation, independent living skills, functional academics, communication and daily living skills, according to the district website.

At the Transition Center, students who need intense transitional support can develop vocational, community and independent living skills.

District officials said Marshall began her educational career in 2008 and worked for the Iowa public school system and Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202, where she still coaches volleyball.

At Chicago Autism Academy, Marshall said she worked specifically to create its transition program and facilitate new student enrollment.

PLAINFIELD – The community is invited to attend a special event Friday to mark the 25th anniversary of the tornado hit Plainfield, and to reflect on how it affected the town, its people, the media, the weather business and how it ultimately helped forge a new identity for the community.

The Plainfield Historical Society, village trustees, the Public Library District, St. Mary Immaculate Church and School District 202 are presenting the program, according to a news release from event organizers.

A commemoration ceremony will start at 3 p.m. at the tornado memorial on Fort Beggs Street, across from Plainfield High School – Central Campus, 24120 W. Fort Beggs St. The commemoration ceremony will feature remarks from Plainfield Mayor Mike Collins and state Sen. Jennifer Berti“It is definitely surreal that we’re standing right where it happened,” Matt Rakauskas said.

PLAINFIELD – Plainfield resident Helen Struzik read prayers Saturday afternoon during Mass at St. Mary Immaculate Parish for the 29 lives lost when the 1990 tornado destroyed much of Plainfield, including the church.

“This weekend at all our parish Masses we commemorate the 25th anniversary of the tornado that changed the life of our parish and our community forever,” Struzik said.

In the prayer, parishioners remembered the 29 people who were killed by the tornado, including the three who died at the church: Howard Hawes Jr., Gloria Sanchez and Sister Mary Keenan.

They also remembered those who were injured or lost their homes, schools or businesses; the new hope and tremendous growth that sprung from the incident; the leadership of priests deacons and laypeople who restored the church; and those affected by any natural disaster.

Along with the special prayer at Mass, St. Mary commemorated the tornado by displaying memorabilia from the fateful day Aug. 28, 1990, after all its Masses on Saturday and Sunday in the church’s gymnasium.

Displayed were copies of newspapers and The Herald-News’ special publication, “Winds of Fury.” Memorabilia included personal items saved by parishioners ranging from photos and tapestries to old football gear. A projected video of news reports of the next several days after the tornado played.

Matt and Diana Rakauskas weren’t in Plainfield at the time of the tornado. But they are both trained as weather spotters, so checking out the memorabilia at the church piqued their interest.

“Back then, you had no idea where Plainfield was,” Diana Rakauskas said. “But it was in People magazine.”

“She was just a warm and wonderful person, a friend forever,” Mary Ann said, “someone you could call no matter what.”

Barbara also made quilts for her family, Cabbage Patchstyle dolls that resembled the recipient and elaborate Sunday dinners to encourage her adult children to come together as a family once a week.

“She was the most supportive person,” Susan said.

“She was the type of mom who would celebrate anything that was important to you.”

In an email, Barbara’s son Tommy Dolph of Plainfield said Barbara attended his sons’ football games even during the last couple of years, when she was not feeling well.

“My mother was kind and welcomed anyone who entered our house,” Tommy said.

“My parents did not have two nickels to rub together, but they volunteered their time and it felt like we had it all.”

Barbara was 79 when she died April 12. The running thread through Barbara’s life, Carol feels, was prayer.

JOLIET – In the Bible, Jesus said to love God with one’s heart, soul and strength and to love one’s neighbor as oneself.

Barbara Dolph of Joliet lived a life worthy of those commands.

She not only belonged to a small group at the Cathedral of St. Raymond in Joliet and was one of the church’s Eucharistic ministers, Barbara started each morning with Mass – the 6:30 a.m. service when she was working and the 8 a.m. one after retirement – and then spent the rest of her time serving others.

Through the years, Barb taught cooking, baking, ceramics and decoupage in 4-H group, served as a Cub Scout den leader and sewed costumes for the former Mary Ann Corcoran Dance Studio in Joliet for more than 20 years, said Barbara’s daughter, Susan Dolph of Minnesota.

“If it had anything to do with kids having fun or learning, she was in,” Susan said.

Through the Cathedral Senior Club, Barbara was a past treasurer and volunteer at Shepherd’s Table, said Carol Embling of Joliet. Barbara also was a wedding coordinator at the church, sewed baptismal bibs for babies christened at St. Ray’s, cared for the holiday plants, and cooked and baked for many occasions.

“Every Monday, even when her husband was ill, she brought cookies for the employees at her work, Carol said.

In 2002, Barbara retired from the Illinois Department of Public Aid. In 2012, Barbara was inducted into the St. Raymond Nonnatus Society, Carol said.

Barbara sent care packages of her homemade specialties to friends, family and the friends of her family, Susan said.

Barb’s homemade candy was so good, the first time Cathedral Club member Rosemary Lux of Joliet tried it, Rosemary was certain it was Fannie Mae. “She did a lot of things at our church,” Rosemary said.

“She was a lovely person.

Barb was so focused on others, her son James Dolph of Joliet didn’t know she had trouble with her knees until she had double knee surgery.

“She was always happy,” James said. “She would never show pain, never show anything was wrong.”

Mary Ann Corcoran of Joliet said Barbara was not only a valued costume-maker for her dance studio, she was a dear and beloved friend.

Together, they would take three-day trips to Chicago to scour fabric stores for just the right material.

“She was great at making costumes,” Mary Ann said.

“If I said, ‘Oh, I need a daisy,’ there it was. She made all the

Bodle, who was blinded and lost part of his brain after a mortar attack in 2012 in Afghanistan, will receive part of the proceeds of the fundraiser along with the Lincolnway Special Recreation Association, which helps children with special needs.

Bodle’s friend, Deborah Joyce, an event coordinator for AVMRA, said he will be surprised when he receives the funds, most of which will go to his living and medical expenses.

Richard J. Georgantas, 79, passed away on Thursday, August 20, 2015, after an 18 month battle with cancer at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home with his family by his side.

Survived by his wife of 53 years, Judy (Boban); daughter, Sue (Jim) Gulas; and grandchildren, Jenny and Nick Gulas. Also survived by his sisters, Lorraine (Dave - Deceased) A’Hearn and Connie A’Hearn; brother-in-law, George F. (Carol) Boban; and favorite card playing sister-in-law, Christine Boban. Numerous nieces and nephews, each believing that they are the “favorite”, along with a few choice “outsiders” also survive.

Atilana Marie Marsh, age 90, of Crest Hill, formerly of Joliet and Lockport, passed away Friday, August 21, at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center after a courageous battle against ovarian cancer.

Atilana “Marie” was born in Joliet on July 13, 1925, to the late Isadore and Lena (nee Mening) Martinez.

She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis (Dave)Young of Joliet; son, Patrick Marsh of Joliet; seven grandchildren, Allyson Marsh, Sarah (Zach Lechner)Young, Rebecca Young, Michael Young, Jamie Marsh, Stephanie Marsh, and McKenzie Marsh; two great-grandchildren, Paul Michael and Henry Lawrence; one brother, Raymond “Bud” Martinez; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 64 years, Paul Lawrence Marsh; son, Paul Michael Marsh; parents, Isadore and Lena Martinez; and one brother, Oliver.

Marie enjoyed discovering shells on the beaches of Florida, traveling the rugged roads of Alaska, listening to the blues, and seeing B.B. King perform on stage. She held various jobs during her 90 years, including cooking at Fairmont School, working as a secretary for Citi Service, and creating floral arrangements at a local bridal shop. Marie was also a dedicated volunteer, serving in the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW, Post 5788, and as a Cub Scout den mom, band parent president, and hospital volunteer. Most of all, she treasured her time with family and loved being Mom, Grandma, and little Pauly and Henry’s “GG”.

Marie made many friends through her kindness, compassion, and courage, and inspired everyone she touched. Family and friends will forever miss her wonderfully funny and special spirit.

The family offers its sincere thanks to all those who prayed for Marie during her illness and who assisted her throughout her brave fight.

Gary D. Musser, age 71, of Channahon, entered eternal life on Friday, August 21, 2015, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Gary was born December 19, 1943, in Tower Hill, IL to the late Athol and Ruby Musser.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Paul Musser; his brother-in-law, Edward Reedy; and his brother-in-law Robert Warren.

He is survived by his wife, Charlotte Warren Musser of 49 years; his daughter, Sarah (Andrew) Meckler; his son, Anthony (Tracy) Musser; and his daughter, Elizabeth Musser.

Also surviving are his Grandchildren, Jack Williams, Maddisen Musser, Jaden Williams, Chase Musser, Daisy Musser, and Amelia Meckler. He is also survived by his sister, Beatrice Reedy; his brother-in-law, James (Mary) Warren; and numerous nieces

and nephews.

Gary retired from Caterpillar Inc. after 35 years of service. He coached many Little League Baseball Teams and coached for many years with the Channooka Braves Youth Football League. There wasn’t a sport he didn’t like, and he was a die-hard fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Chicago White Sox, and the Chicago Bears. He treasured his family. Spending time with them was his favorite thing to do. He was a loving and devoted husband, father, brother, and grandfather. He is a hero to his family and gives us an example to live by.

Gary was an active member of Channahon United Methodist Church. He supported the church with his time and talents.

Additionally, he worked for Reynolds Aluminum for 12 1/2 years, bartended at The Keg for 9 years and worked for Cornerstone Services for 5 years. He was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Joseph Medical Center and also worked at the Joliet Park District. It was at the Park District that he was able to perform his most favorite job of all time; driving the Zamboni! Special thanks to Glen Marcum for making “one last hurrah on the ice” a reality. Richard was also a long-time usher for 4pm mass at St. Mary Nativity. One of his proudest accomplishments with his wife was co-chairing Jubilation in 1985 for the final year of the event with Cheryle and Larry Gray.

He enjoyed working crossword puzzles, playing golf, scrabble, dominoes, and canasta with family and friends.

His favorite place in the whole world was Siesta Key where he took great pleasure in spending vacations with his daughter and her family and some very close friends. He looked forward to many casino road trips with his gambling buddy, Dee. The family would like to thank the caring nurses and staff at the Joliet Area Community Hospice Home for their compassion to Richard and his family throughout his stay.

Report: Madigan spokesman has lucrative outside deals

CHICAGO – The top aide to powerful Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan is a contract employee with outside clients who depend on Madigan and the Legislature for funding, according to a published report.

Madigan spokesman Steve Brown’s clients include a program for nursing assistants that saw its state funding more than double from 2011 to 2013, and a nonprofit group that helps dropouts, which has received $1.6 million in state grants over the past two years, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

Brown’s state contract provides a salary of $112,500 this year, plus benefits. Outside clients boost his yearly income to at least $196,000.

The 66-year-old Brown said he doesn’t lobby the Democratic speaker or other state lawmakers on behalf of clients, and discloses his clients to Madigan.

Brown isn’t required to make his clients public because he isn’t a state employee. The newspaper found some of his clients in public records and Brown told the newspaper about others, according to the report.

CHICAGO – On an abandoned Chicago railway line cutting between the treetops, bike commuters zip by walkers and joggers, all traversing a ribbon of concrete undulating through a lush landscape where clattering freight cars once ferried everything from coal to furniture.

This relic of the city’s industrial past is now a vision of its future.

Chicago and cities throughout the country are transforming hulking pieces of obsolete infrastructure into useful – even inspiring – amenities: In this case, a park in the sky that doubles as an alternative transportation corridor.

Since opening in June, the nearly three-mile elevated path, called the Bloomingdale Trail, has changed how residents move through a section of Chicago’s northwest side that in many places is starved of parks and inviting pathways for pedestrians and bikes.

“This trail opened up a lot of opportunity for me,” said Luke Young, a 30-year-old web developer who now bikes the 10 miles to his job downtown instead of taking the train; it takes roughly the same time. Moving by bike, however, is more fun and a way to relieve stress, he said before tearing down a ramp that links the trail to Milwaukee Avenue, a busy thoroughfare popular with cyclists.

“This is really an innovative

park for a resurgent city and it’s an example of the way cities are coming back to life in the U.S.,” said Ed McMahon, a senior fellow at the nonprofit Urban Land Institute in Washington, D.C.

Vaccination rules won’t immediately affect Ill. students

SPRINGFIELD – Illinois families who don’t want their children to be vaccinated will have to get a doctor’s note before claiming a religious exemption, but the new state law won’t affect students heading back to school in the coming weeks.

Gov. Bruce Rauner recently signed a bill that aims to reduce the number of unvaccinated children in the state’s classrooms.

Because the law was passed after many children had already received their routine checkups or started school, the requirements will be delayed until Oct. 16 – the day after a deadline for students to receive their vaccines or file objections.

“This is a bit of a difficult situation. ... A lot of kids have already gone to get their physical and so forth. Some schools have already started. To send them back to the doctor would be costing the parents,” said Melaney Arnold, a spokeswoman for the state’s Department of Public Health.

Students who transfer from another state will have to meet the requirement beginning in mid-October, she said.

The Illinois State Board of Education was aware of more than 13,000 such exemptions in 2013, according to spokeswoman Megan Griffin. It’s unclear how effective the new law will be in reducing the amount of unvaccinated children, because the way schools define a religious objection also is ambiguous.

New law requires colleges take steps to address sex assault

CHICAGO – A new state law will require Illinois colleges to take steps to prevent and respond to sexual assault.

The law requires colleges to provide a confidential adviser to sex assault victims. They also must notify victims of options available to ensure their safety, such as orders of protection or changing class schedules or campus housing.

Colleges also must adopt a fair process for adjudicating

allegations of assault and train students and employees on preventing violence.

Attorney General Lisa Madigan pushed for the law, which Gov. Bruce Rauner signed Friday. It takes effect in August 2016.

Central Illinois village may hold coyote hunt

TOLONO – A central Illinois village is considering holding a government-sponsored coyote hunt to reduce the number of the animals seen around town.

The Champaign News-Gazette reported officials in Tolono already tried hiring a professional trapper. But that didn’t solve the problem.

Village President Jeff Holt said he’s seen coyotes “as close as the car wash.” He said the animals could be carrying rabies.

Trustee Rena Anderson said the village is considering holding a hunt in the fall. Anderson said some municipalities have received donations from businesses to sponsor hunts.

Jimmy Carter’s cancer fight puts new meaning in an old message

By KATHLEEN FOODY The Associated Press PLAINS, Ga. – The Sunday school lesson was familiar: When your burden grows heavy, ask God for strength.

But the message carried a more powerful and personal meaning than usual because of who delivered it: Jimmy Carter.

The 90-year-old former president taught Sunday school in his hometown for the first time since he disclosed Thursday his cancer had spread to his brain.

With easygoing humor and his usual toothy smile, Carter gave two back-to-back Bible lessons to unusually large crowds totaling more than 700 people – some of whom had traveled hundreds of miles – just three days after undergoing radiation treatment.

He spent less than five minutes recapping his illness before saying, “That’s enough of that subject” and beginning the lesson on faith, love and relationships.

Carter said he and his

wife of 69 years, Rosalynn, resolved never go to sleep without settling their differences.

“Just being able to admit you MIGHT be mistaken and that the other person MIGHT be right” will improve a relationship, he said, prompting laughter from the crowd at Maranatha Baptist Church.

He encouraged his listeners to consider God a partner in their lives.

“Any time, we can just bow our heads and say, ‘God, I’m really troubled. I ask you to give me the strength to bear whatever is on my shoulders and to bear whatever comes to me,’” Carter said.

The former peanut farmer and Georgia governor has been teaching Sunday school for more than three decades at his small red-brick church, which has about 40 regular members. His appearance this time drew the biggest crowd members could recall, with about 460 people packed inside.

The turnout was so big that Carter gave a second lesson at the nearby high school for

about 250 people, and about 70 others had to be turned away.

People seated underneath the stained-glass windows nodded when church member Jan Williams described those who managed to get a seat as “blessed.”

Carter entered and exited without fanfare, wearing a gray suit. He paced across the front of the sanctuary as he spoke and occasionally returned to a podium to read aloud while wearing a pair of thin wire glasses. His wife sat nearby.

As listeners left the church, they proudly showed each other newly taken photos with the Carters.

Cricket Keating said Carter’s “irrepressible joy” made the trip from her home in Columbus, Ohio, worthwhile.

She and a friend arrived in Plains at midnight to be first in line and spent the night in sleeping bags.

She said she felt humbled

Cunsolo, 28, was one of a team of 15 researchers and volunteers aboard the Ocean Star who a month ago set out from San Francisco to study the plastic waste as part of the “Mega Expedition,” a major step in the organization’s effort to eventually clean up what’s known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.

The 171-foot mother ship, carrying massive white bags filled with plastic garbage, returned Sunday to San Francisco along with two sailing boats with volunteers who helped collect the garbage samples.

Most of the trash they found, including a 1-ton fishing net, is medium- to largesize pieces, as opposed to confetti-like plastic shards that can enter the food chain easily after being eaten by small fish and birds and are extremely difficult to clean up, said Boyan Slat, who founded The Ocean Cleanup and has developed a technology he says can start removing the garbage by 2020.

“It was a good illustration of why it is such an urgent thing to clean up – because if we don’t clean it up soon, then we’ll give the big plastic time to break into smaller and smaller pieces,” Slat said.

Volunteers on 30 boats have been measuring the size and mapping the loca-

tion of tons of plastic waste floating between the West Coast and Hawaii that, according to some estimates, covers an area twice the size of Texas.

Slat said the group will publish a report of its findings by mid-2016; after that, they hope to test out a one-mile barrier to collect garbage near Japan. The ultimate goal is the construction of a 60mile barrier in the middle of the Pacific.

The expedition was sponsored by The Ocean Cleanup, an organization founded by Slat, a 21-year-old innovator from the Netherlands who has envisioned using long-distance floating barriers that will attach to the seabed with

an anchoring system used by oil-drilling rigs. The devices will target ocean currents full of waste and skim garbage from the surface while aquatic life and the currents themselves pass underneath.

He first became passionate about cleaning the oceans of plastic while diving in the Mediterranean Sea five years ago. “I was diving in Greece and realized that there were more plastic bags than fish, and I wondered why can’t we clean this up,” Slat said.

After dropping out of university after his first six months, Slat dedicated his life to developing the technology the group will start testing next year.

You also want to avoid straining and heavy lifting, which can add to vein visibility. Sleeping on your left side can be beneficial, along with taking daily vitamins.

Vitamin C, especially, is used by the body to produce connective tissues that repair and maintain blood vessels.

FARGO, N.D. – Of the six sites in the U.S. where researchers are trying to figure out how to integrate unmanned aircraft into civilian airspace, only North Dakota’s can fly high both day and night.

The Federal Aviation Administration approved a plan last week that allows drones to be flown up to 1,200 feet above the entire state and permits flights at night, a combination that makes North Dakota unique, because other test sites are limited to a 200-foot blanket and daylight hours.

“It really expands the type of operations you can conduct,” said Nicholas Flom, director of safety for the Northern Plains UAS Test Site.

For example, some precision agriculture sensors are designed to function at a minimum altitude of 250 feet, he said, and drones that would be flown to look for hot spots in wildfires or used for searchand-rescue missions generally work better at a higher altitude because it gives the cameras a broader range.

Alaska, New York, Nevada, Texas and Virginia also were selected in December 2013 as national test sites for unmanned aircraft, which the FAA currently does not allow for commercial use. As for why North Dakota’s wide-open skies were chosen for the higher altitudes, the FAA referred questions to the North Dakota Department of Commerce.

Officials at the Northern Plains site wasted no time getting up in the air at night last week with the Draganflyer X4ES, which was monitored by three University of North Dakota pilots.

“With the lights on the aircraft, it’s uniquely easy to see it,” Flom said.

Wildcats looking for first victory in more than two years

By SCOTT EHLING Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – All it takes is one. One victory to start and the rest will follow. One victory to show that all the hard work, blood, sweat, tears and time invested into something that you believe in was worth it.

For Plainfield Central coach John Jackson, the winless streak for the Wildcats stands

at 20 games across two-plus seasons. That is the heavy burden he hopes vanishes quickly this year.

“Honestly, in my life, I never thought that I would look at an 0-9 season, let alone two back-toback,” Jackson said. “Last year, we went into the season telling the kids that this has to change and they did everything that I could have asked them to do.

son and it didn’t translate to the field.”

The last Wildcats’ victory was 28-0 over Plainfield East on Oct. 12, 2012.

Plainfield Central averaged 13.6 points a game last year and was outscored, 248-121.

“Offensively, we were rather inept and defensively we were lacking in spots and just didn’t get it done,” Jackson said. “I will tell anyone to not judge those

kids last year simply on their record. We would like to be more physical and more consistent.”

Last year, the Wildcats started the season with Matt Gurke at quarterback and, after a few games, made the change to start sophomore Marcus Hayes and moved Gurke to wideout. This season, there is no quarterback controversy as Hayes is the unquestioned starter.

“Last year, I said if we are

thinking of making the move, just do it and if we struggle, we struggle with a sophomore,” Jackson said. “Matt (Gurke) was the consummate team player and actually will be playing wideout for Benedictine (University). We wanted to maximize Marcus’ talents and be more of a conservative offense along with our running game.”

Hayes earned valuable playing time last year and now has had an entire offseason of workouts, conditioning and understanding the playbook. Hayes appeared to have some early success and a connection with wideout Nate Graves.

As Hayes hopefully progresses, the question will be the same for the rest of the team and whether it will translate onto the field.

“Certainly, one thing that we all felt that we needed to develop this year over last was competition,” Jackson said. “Maybe in the past, some guys felt that because we didn’t have the depth that they didn’t need to work as hard, but that is not going to be the case this year.”

Seniors Trevor Ervin and Andrew Black will see playing time at the running back position, as they will be interchanged with Adam Hayes.

“I want to be in a position this year where I have a lot of kids that I can use and interchange,” Jackson said. “That is one thing that we wanted to push this year was more depth on both the offense and defense sides of the ball.”

Defensively, the Wildcats’ linebackers will be the strength, anchored by Jake Johnson and Trevor Smeets.

“A few years ago our defense was terrible,” Jackson said. “Defensively, we need to continue to improve as a quick, disciplined and physical defense. Last year, our defense was good and we were in games but our offense was weak. This year, we’re hoping that we have the right mix of both.”

Three teams qualified for the playoffs last year from the Southwest Prairie Conference, with Oswego being the conference champions. History has shown a team can rebound from a difficult year and make the playoffs the next year.

By SCOTT EHLING Shaw Media Correspondent PLAINFIELD – As the Plainfield South football program enters its 14th season with a 57-66 overall record, coach Ken Bublitz knows the Cougars must avoid repeating the 0-3 start from a year ago if they hope to make the playoffs.

“We made some progress last year, it just took us a while to get going,” Bublitz said. “Defensively, we were solid for a majority of the year but unfortunately we weren’t able to generate enough offense early.

We put ourselves in position for an opportunity to get into the playoffs in our last game, we just weren’t able to do that.

“I give our guys and our program a lot of credit, because when you are 0-3, it is awfully easy to put your head down and kind of forget about the rest of the season, but we didn’t do that.”

Similar to last year, South will open the season playing Lemont. However, this time is on the road. Lemont lost to Nazareth in the Class 6A state title game last year and should provide Bublitz and his coaching staff with a good measuring stick right away.

“Lemont had a tremendous amount of success last year, and they are a great program,” Bublitz said. “They are going

Bublitz enters his fifth year as coach of Plainfield South and is 19-19.

The Cougars will be relatively inexperienced on the offensive side of the ball, as they return only three starters. There is an open compe-

tition at the quarterback position between juniors Jackson Howarth and Nicholas Deppe.

“We have three guys at quarterback with Nick (Deppe) and Jackson (Howarth) at the top,” Bublitz said.

“They are both working really hard to gain that position, and I think that both have really shown a lot. They are juniors and getting better all of the time.”

South averaged just over 15 points a game last year as the Cougars were outscored, 237-137. They will need to improve upon those numbers on both sides of the ball if they hope to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2013.

The Cougars’ defense should be the strongest asset going into the new season as it returns nine starters.

“All of our returning starters on defense either started every game last year or they saw significant time and gained a tremendous amount of experience and have made a lot of progress in the offseason,” Bublitz said.

Defensively, the Cougars primarily run a 4-4 scheme and will look to all-conference senior Danny Saracco to lead the experienced linebacker group.

“We’ll be a 4-4 team on defense and spread on offense, which is very similar to what we did last year,” Bublitz said.

The Southwest Prairie Conference sent three teams to the playoffs last year and could easily see that number grow this year.

Gibson returns home to guide fortunes of youthful Spartans At a glance

By DENNIS NELSON Shaw Media Correspondent ROMEOVILLE – The pride is returning to Romeoville High School. And, the Spartans have found the right man to bring it back.

Oliver Gibson, a 1990 Romeoville graduate, has taken over for the departed Jeff Kuna and plans on instilling pride, toughness and most of all success back into his alma mater.

“It’s been a great summer and this is a heck of an honor to come back and coach my school,” said Gibson, a 2015 inductee into the Joliet Area Sports Hall of Fame. “I’m superexcited for the opportunity and for the season to begin.”

Gibson, who played in the NFL for nine years with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Cincinnati Bengals, inherits what could be the youngest and most inexperienced team in recent history.

“That’s a blessing and a curse,” Gibson said of the Spartans, who feature four returnees from a 2-7 season of a year ago. “It’s a blessing because they get to start fresh in a new system, and it’s a curse because they don’t have a lot of varsity experience.”

The new system will include a philosophy of success. Romeoville has had two winning seasons the past 12 years. It last made the playoffs in 2013, its first appearance in 11 years.

“My philosophy is you have to play with pride and have a sense of winning,” Gibson said. “Kids have been coming onto this field and not thinking they are going to win. Kids here don’t expect to win and we have to change that culture. Is it going to happen overnight? No. But, it’s going to happen.”

Kitchens threw for more than 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns a year ago. Nartey had 452 receiving yards.

“Nartey is an all-around football player, and Nettles is going to rush for 1,000 yards this year,” Gibson said. “[Kitchens] is stronger, smarter, hungry, and he’s the ultimate dual threat. We’re going to try to keep people off balance.”

with each snap.

“Our offensive line is young, but they are buying into it,” Gibson said. “We have a bunch of juniors who have to develop.

They don’t have a lot of football experience. The same goes for our defensive line.”

Justin Brandon could be the defensive leader. Gibson also is leaning on sophomore defensive end Mike Caceras, junior defensive lineman Davon Maxey and sophomore defensive tackle Rickey Smallwood.

“This is a blue-collar team, and these kids are being taught

football by a great coaching staff,” Gibson said. “We’re trying to get kids to fall in love with football. We have 100 kids in the program. But, the kids who are here have been working their tails off.”

The same can be said of Gibson.

“I don’t feel pressure because pressure comes when you are not prepared,” Gibson said. “I’m prepared and these guys are going to be prepared.

We want to take some people by surprise, and I think we will.”

The key to Romeoville’s success will be attention to detail.

“We have to do the little things right,” Gibson said. “We are not talent-laden. We have to play fast and execute every time we step on the field.”

With six returning starters on defense, the Porters are hoping to make a playoff run.

“We really need to make the stop on the third-and-short this season,” said Ryan Kelley, a 6-foot, 240-pound senior defense lineman.

“We have a lot of experience back on defense and our attitude is 100 percent better than last year. We have been working really hard this offseason to win each week and get to the playoffs.”

Echoing some of those same thoughts was returning outside linebacker Gabe Lammers, a 6-1, 205 senior.

“Conditioning is a big factor,” Lammers said. “Last year, we let some things slip away in the fourth quarter. We have worked hard at our conditioning. We also have great senior leadership on both sides of the ball.”

“Deiondre will be a part of everything offensively,” Starkey said. “He and [junior] Ben Davis will be our quarterbacks. Ben has had a very impressive summer and has shown great improvement. He also will be our kicker and possibly handle the punting.

“With Quin [Polaski] also back on the line, that is two pretty experienced people,” Starkey said. “With our newcomers added, the offensive line should be pretty good. Our defense has really improved from last year and we expect to make the playoffs this year.”

LOCKPORT – During summer workouts, the Lockport football team votes on a theme for the season.

It is seen on T-shirts, signs in the locker room and is a rallying point for the team.

This season that theme is “Brawl for the Barge.”

The story behind this saying has truly historical meaning for the town of Lockport and the I & M canal. Lockport’s longtime athletic trainer Joe Cunnane related the story to the “old days” of the canal, when barges were being towed by mules with handlers, they would come upon each other going in opposite directions. The young men – or “Porters” – of the barge would brawl to see who continued on their way first.

“It’s not about the brawl, it’s about tradition, pride in the team, school and community,” second-year coach Dan Starkey said.

“You battle for your town and community. It’s a never-give-up attitude and standing up for what you believe.

The Porters have always had a tradition of working hard on the football field, making the community proud and we want to bring that all back.”

Lockport is coming off a 3-6 season in Starkey’s first with the team. The Porters have not reached the playoffs since 2011.

“We have game goals,” Starkey said. “We want to be 1-0 each week.

Team goals are a process of all the individual goals we set each week.”

“Belle holds Pacific Northwest swimming records for the 11-to-12 age group,” Lisa said. “She broke some records that were held by Meghan Quann Jendrick and Ariana Kukors, and both of them were in the Olympics.”

This apple has not fallen far from the tree. Swimming at Oakwood before she joined the Joliet Jets, Lisa held USA Swimming national age-group records in the 50 and 100 free in the 12-under age group.

Modern technology notwithstanding, Lisa said, “Those times rank 30-something all time, and I still have times ranked in the top 100 in the 200 free and 100 fly.”

Lisa represented Joliet West in three IHSA state meets. In 1983, as a freshman, she finished third in 100 fly.

She was fourth in the 100 fly and fifth in the 200 free in 1984. She did not enter the IHSA meet as a junior, and as a senior, she was third in the 100 fly and fifth in the 200 I.M. In college, she swam two years at Louisiana State, then

When Kienlen saw Lisa there, he was surprised. Lisa said his reaction was something like: “Oh, my God, what are you doing here? Belle?

Sims, a former Jets standout who graduated from Joliet Catholic, made the United States team for the 1980 Olympics, but the USA boycotted the Games. He went on to be a four-time All-American at Stanford and has been a Masters national champion.

Lee Rakoski’s daughters – Lisa, Kristen and Emily – were prominent swimmers in Joliet, most notably during their careers with the Joliet YMCA Jets.

Dad kept all his daughters’ times in his yellow book. That comes in handy now.

The numbers he recorded for Lisa, now Lisa Rakoski Battistoni, were impressive indeed. And they’re being blown out of the water by his granddaughter.

“She’s way faster than I was,” Lisa said of her daughter, Belle, who recently turned 13.

Then she smiled and explained, “Of course, the technology is a lot better now.”

I had the opportunity earlier this month to talk with Lisa and Belle when they were in Joliet visiting their family. The Battistonis live in Sammamish, a suburb of Seattle. It was fun to catch up with Lisa, to hear about the big names she has come in contact with in the swimming world, and to get to know Belle.

Remember the name Belle Battistoni, and who her mother is. If Belle continues on the path she has been following, you may be cheering her on in the Olympics some day.

Bears cap good week with win Bears quarterback Jay Cutler loses his helmet as he dives into the end zone in the first half Saturday against the Colts in Indianapolis.

BEARS INSIDER Hub Arkush Indianapolis was very good to the Bears this past week.

In their first practice Wednesday against the Colts, they got a wake-up call letting them know how far they had to go just to compete with one of the NFL’s top teams.

In practice No. 2, the offense continued to struggle, in large part because of a lack of healthy bodies and talent at wide receiver and right tackle. But the defense responded nicely and actually outplayed one of the league’s best offenses in all but the two-minute drills.

The payoff came in the Bears’ 23-11 exhibition victory Saturday night over the Colts in which they were, in fact, the better team – for this particular Saturday night.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The Colts will be a Super Bowl contender this year, while the Bears do their best to avoid a second straight top10 pick in the draft.

NFL exhibition games continue to be meaningless, and the Bears and Colts are 0-0 in games that count for 2015.

Even though the Bears outplayed the Colts at every level Saturday, first string down to the fours, anyone who thinks the Bears are the better team is almost certainly functioning post-frontal lobotomy.

What matters in the preseason is your team gets better every day; and from week to week, and the Bears clearly accomplished that in Indy.

We needed to see the firstteam defense get a stop, and they came up with a couple on the strength of big plays from their big play guys, Pernell McPhee and Jared Allen.

We wanted the first-team offense to move the ball and get points, and it did.

That it stalled in the red zone and settled for Robbie Gould’s leg is understandable for now while they continue to play with second- and thirdstring receivers and Charles Leno playing right tackle a lot like Jordan Mills does.

If you watched closely or go back and look at the

tape, you’ll see quarterback Jay Cutler playing exactly the way coach John Fox and general manager Adam Gase want him to, completing eight of nine safe throws with no mistakes and coming out of the pocket for positive yards when there was nothing there, rather than putting the ball up for grabs.

And how can you not love Cutler – no matter how much you dislike him, and we know most of you do – selling out at the goal line in a meaningless exhibition and lunging headfirst for pay dirt?

Yes, the offense still is in trouble.

Even when Alshon Jeffery comes back, it appears Marquess Wilson is not the answer on the other side, and now he has a hamstring to deal with to boot.

The Bears must find one or two veteran wideouts who still can play, or they will see eight or nine defenders on the box all day every Sunday.

And while the sample size is still small and he deserves at least one more shot, the only way to know that was Leno out there and not Mills was the 72 instead of 67.

There are things to fix that still might require another offseason.

But there also are bonuses we weren’t sure of before Saturday night.

I’ve been telling you running back Jeremy Langford is a stud. Now you see what I’m talking about?

Yes, it was just a practice game, but I think he’s just beginning to scratch the surface.

There was good and bad on defense as well.

The Bears are going to struggle to stop the run at times, but they pressured Andrew Luck and Matt Hasselbeck all week long and continued to for 60 minutes

Saturday.

Will Sutton is a kid I never thought could make this team, but he’s been taking giant steps every day in practice, and now I’m not sure how they’re going to keep him off the field.

Ego Ferguson also continues to impress, and I thought Eddie Goldman was better this week than last.

If you didn’t know who Terrance Mitchell was, you do now, and he is going to make this team.

Sam Acho is a playmaker wherever you put him; and just by being on the field Lamar Houston and Willie Young made strides.

On the downside, I thought Shea McClellin was exposed, and Christian Jones still has a lot to learn, too.

Finally, one guy who had a tough week in Indianapolis was cornerback Kyle Fuller – and truth be told, he’s not having a great camp.

Fuller cannot remain the anointed one much longer with Tim Jennings, Sherrick McManis and Mitchell all actually playing much better football than him so far this summer.

Still, when you total all the assets and liabilities on the balance sheet, it was a good week. What we saw in the Bears’ second exhibition is that Fox and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio are starting to put their stamps on this club.

There still is a ton of speed bumps and potholes to dodge, but these guys were much better this week than the week before. And in the exhibition season, that’s the name of the game.

Bryant gets two HRs as Cubs sweep Braves The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – After watching his team’s latest homer-fueled win, Cubs manager Joe Maddon took a few minutes to address the most frightening hit of the day.

Kris Bryant homered twice, and Kyle Schwarber connected an inning after lining a hard foul ball that sent a fan to the hospital Sunday as the Cubs beat Atlanta, 9-3, the Braves’ seventh straight loss.

The game was delayed briefly in the first inning after Schwarber’s foul liner struck a female fan sitting just past the camera well on the first base side.

The woman was carried off on a stretcher and taken to a hospital. The Cubs said she was conscious, but had no further details on her condition.

“Oh my God, awful,” Maddon said.

Several fans around the majors have been hit this season by fouls and flying bats, and Major League Baseball has said it is studying the issue of crowd safety.

Maddon issued his own warning.

“Pay attention. I hate to say, but those are wonderful seats. ... I watch, and I see people turning their back to the field when action is going. You just can’t do it, you can’t do it,” he said.

The Cubs hit five home runs, including a leadoff shot by Dexter Fowler in the first inning and a three-run drive by Miguel Montero.

Jason Hammel (7-5) allowed two runs in 6 1⁄ 3 innings. He also contributed an RBI single as the Cubs finished off a four-game sweep.

Cano homers as Mariners beat Sox and avoid sweep The ASSOCIATED PRESS SEATTLE – This time around, the Seattle Mariners didn’t let their lead slip away. Almost, but not quite.

Robinson Cano had a tworun homer and Nelson Cruz doubled in two runs to help the Mariners beat the White Sox, 8-6, on Sunday to avoid a three-game sweep.

“Like I told the guys in the dugout, it’s good to end it up with a happy Sunday,” Cano said. “You can have a nice evening. You don’t have to go to bed and, ‘What do we have to do win a game?’ ” Seattle – which lost in extra innings Saturday night after blowing a two-run lead in the ninth – built a 7-1 lead through five innings, but the Sox cut it to 7-6 with five runs in the sixth behind a pair of two-run homers.

game, but we came up a little bit short,” said LaRoche, whose 12th homer brought the Sox within a run.

Crumley, Joliet complete sweep SUBMITTED REPORT AVON, Ohio – Righthander Luke Crumley, a rookie from the University of Georgia, has been used mainly in relief for the Joliet Slammers.

On Sunday afternoon, he made the most of an opportunity to start. Crumley pitched 62⁄3 shutout innings, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out

five, as the Slammers beat Lake Erie, 6-1, to sweep the three-game series with the Crushers.

Dan Tobik worked 1 1⁄ 3 innings in relief, allowing an unearned run, and Navery Moore finished it off with a scoreless ninth inning.

Mike Garza had two doubles, scored a run and drove in one, and Marc Flores slammed a two-run

homer to help lead the offense for the Slammers, who open a series against Schaumburg on Tuesday night at Silver Cross Field.

Jeremy Nowak chipped in a hit, a run scored and an RBI. The game was tight until Joliet broke it open with a five-run seventh inning.

The Slammers outscored the Crushers, 26-9, in the three-game sweep.

Bowyer holds his head high to cling to final Chase berth

By JENNA FRYER The Associated Press BRISTOL, Tenn. – All of the crew members who work on Clint Bowyer’s team know they’ll be out of a job in 12 more races. Like everyone else at Michael Waltrip Racing, they face an uncertain future in NASCAR following this past week’s announcement the organization will close at the end of the season.

Bowyer insisted that wouldn’t stop his No. 15 team from trying to win the championship.

It was a noble claim from the driver, who likely will be just fine and move on to another job in 2016. But there’s never any guarantee those around him won’t lose their desire to put forth full effort on behalf of an employer who is shuttering the organization.

There was no quit Saturday night, however, as Bowyer grabbed a fifth-place finish at Bristol Motor Speedway to remain in contention for NASCAR’s playoffs.

“We desperately needed a solid run,” Bowyer said. “Obviously, you’re hungry for a win with this organization.

It’s fun to be a part of a group that can answer the call when you’ve got to dig down and reach down and get a little bit more to get in that Chase and be a part of an elite group.

“These guys are up for the challenge.”

Bowyer is 15th in the Sprint Cup standings with two races remaining to set the Chase for the championship field. He’s holding the final transfer spot into the 16-driver field, and his finish Saturday night gave him a 35-point advantage over Aric Almirola.

It was a small victory for MWR, which learned Wednesday that co-owner Rob Kauffman had no plans to field cars in 2016. Bowyer was released from his contract, which still had two seasons remaining, and decided he didn’t want to

David Ragan’s deal was only to complete this season for Brian Vickers, who has been sidelined with health issues. He and Bowyer both are looking for new rides.

But the rest of the MWR employees face a far more uncertain future. Two cars are dropping off the Sprint Cup Series grid, which means those jobs are vanishing. Some employees may land elsewhere, but there aren’t enough openings in the industry for everyone.

It could be particularly difficult for the high-level employees to find similar work without another team expanding. MWR general manager Ty Norris has long worked with Michael Waltrip and helped him launch the team in 2007; Scott Miller left Richard Childress Racing to be MWR’s competition director. Crew chiefs Brian Pattie and Billy Scott need those positions to open on other teams to find work.

It makes for an unsettling atmosphere at a time when Bowyer and his No. 15 team need to be nearly flawless.

Bowyer has little doubt they can stay focused and get him in the Chase. He noted his team has been performing well for the last five weeks – four finishes of eighth or better, and he was inside the top-10 before he wrecked at Michigan – and the group understands the stakes.

When you flip a coin, it will come down heads or tails. In theory, half the time, you win; half the time, you lose. At the bridge table, when you take a finesse, in theory, half the time, it wins; half the time, it loses. Wouldn’t it be nice to get better odds?

Well, sometimes you can.

This week we are going to study endplays by declarer. He gives an opponent the lead when that opponent has to make a lead that gains declarer a trick (or at the worst, allows him to break even).

In today’s deal, South is in six spades. West leads the club queen.

Declarer wins with his ace and cashes the spade ace, being disgruntled to see East discard a club.

How should South continue?

North’s raise to three spades promised 5-7 support points.

With an unavoidable trump loser, it looks as though declarer needs the diamond finesse to work – but not so. He should cash his spade king and club king, ruff his last club in the dummy, and take his heart tricks.

The key position has been reached. Two of the three side suits have been eliminated, and declarer has trumps in each hand to benefit from a ruff-and-sluff. Now South gives West the lead by exiting with a trump. What can West do after winning with his queen?

Nothing. If he leads a diamond, it is away from the king. Or if he plays his last club, South ruffs in the dummy and sluffs his diamond queen.

It’s heads South wins, tails EastWest loses.

Surgery may be a reasonable option if a herniated disk is the clear cause of sciatica, and non-surgical treatments just don’t give relief from the pain.

It may seem odd for me to talk about a study that showed virtually no benefit from a treatment, and then to say I might prescribe the treatment anyway for certain patients. That’s because all a well-done study like this one can do is evaluate whether a particular treatment helps the average patient.

But not all patients with a particular disease are the same. Diseases are not that simple and homogeneous.

Some people will respond to a particular treatment; some won’t. So if a patient has responded well to a particular treatment in the past, I’ll consider prescribing that treatment again.

After all, I’m treating a patient, not a study.

Dear Dr. K: I have terrible sciatica pain from a slipped disk, but I’ve hesitated to take steroid pills. What do you think about this treatment?

Dear Reader: Your spine is essentially a column of interlocking bones called vertebrae. A disk tucked in between each pair of vertebrae acts as a shock-absorbing cushion. Sciatica often occurs when a disk becomes displaced (herniated) in the lower spine and injures or compresses the sciatic nerve. This causes sciatica, a severe, shooting pain, tingling, numbness or weakness that runs from your lower back through the buttock and into the lower leg. (On my website, askdoctork.com, I’ve put an illustration showing common causes of sciatica.)

Doctors often prescribe steroids to relieve the sudden, severe pain of disk-related nerve compression, and some back-pain guidelines include them as an appropriate treatment.

But steroid pills have not been well studied for treating sciatica.

A study recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association helps to evaluate the effectiveness of this treatment. The study looked at 269 adults with sciatic nerve pain caused by a herniated disk. They were randomly assigned to receive two weeks of steroid pills or a placebo. The researchers measured pain and function after they finished treatment and again a year later. The results were mixed: • Pain was similar in both the steroid and placebo groups.

• Physical function was slightly better in the steroid group.

• The number of people who ended up needing surgery was similar in both groups.

If steroid pills have worked for a particular patient in the past, I would probably recommend them again. However, given the results of this study,
