Status of park director Egizio unclear

JOLIET – The job status of Joliet Park District Executive Director Dominic Egizio is uncertain.

Sources said Egizio is on leave following threatened litigation discussed during a closed session at a special meeting of the park board Tuesday.

Park Board President Glen Marcum would not comment on whether Egizio Dominic was on leave but said, “He is not working now.”

Egizio Marcum declined to discuss Egizio’s situation or the circumstances involving his absence.

“It’s a personnel issue,” he said.

Sources said Egizio is on administrative leave as the park board investigates a complaint involving Egizio and a park district employee. The board reportedly has received a demand letter from a law firm representing the employee seeking payment and other actions to resolve the

“I’m not speaking on any matter regarding park district personnel,” Swanson said.

Egizio could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Park District spokesman Brad Staab sent an email statement that read: “The Joliet Park District respects the privacy of its employees and does not speak public on matters regarding its personnel.”

Egizio is the top administrative officer in charge of all operations of the park district. He has been executive director since 2004 and has worked for the park district for 26 years.

The park board next meets at 5 p.m.

Monday for its regular meeting at the Inwood Athletic Center, 3000 W. Jefferson St. Marcum said he has been talking with Swanson about the agenda for that meeting and did not know as of Thursday afternoon if Egizio’s job status will be on the agenda.

Transportation innovation discussed at forum

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Several experts in industries from ride-sharing to particle physics offered their ideas to improve transportation at a public forum Thursday hosted by U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, at Plainfield Village Hall.

About 40 people attended the Community Leadership Forum. Panelists included Hultgren, General Motors Executive Director Harry Lightsey, Fermilab COO Timothy Meyer, Mark Blankenship and Kevin Price of the Illinois Department of Transportation, CSX Transportation Regional Vice President Thomas Livingston and UBER Chicago General Manager Chris Taylor.

“So much of the work that government does ... relates back to transportation, helping people get from point A to B,” Hultgren said. “The idea of this forum was bringing together leaders of different industries to talk about how technology could impact transportation.”

ed Customer Experience for GM, was the event’s keynote speaker. He gave several examples of how automobile technology aims to stop crashes.

“The last 40 to 50 years we’ve been designing to withstand a crash, accepting the fact that crashes happen,” he said. “Now we’ve begun a pivot. Now it’s all about preventing crashes from happening altogether.”

Technology such as anti-lock brakes or backup alert cameras, Lightsey said, will be a trend. Other advancements include key fobs that allow parental monitoring of driving habits and vehicle-to-vehicle communication.

Fermilab is known for its breakthroughs in particle physics, but Meyer said the science is being applied to help drive economic growth.

“We push the technology of accelerators,” Meyer said. “If an accelerator can be used to make tires harder, stronger and more durable, why not pavement?”

Asked who was in charge of the district in Egizio’s absence, Marcum said, “We have superintendents. Everyone is doing what they do.”

Commissioner Timothy Broderick declined to comment on Egizio’s absence.

Other commissioners could not immediately be reached.

Egizio’s administration has been marked by expansion of park district operations and events. Egizio brought back Taste of Joliet, the city’s biggest summertime festival and one that has brought topname music acts to town.

The park district has put field turf in Joliet Memorial Stadium, expanding the ability to use the stadium for multiple sports and concerts. The Presence Inwood Athletic Club opened under Egizio’s leadership.

Last year, the district passed a $19.5 million bond referendum for a variety of park projects, including an indoor recreational facility planned for Nowell Park.

Recent innovations include wheel heat sensors that can prevent drag and derailment, smart locomotive engines and webbased applications for first responders.

Blankenship spoke about IDOT’s new Safety Portal, which makes reporting crashes to the state simpler and quicker for law enforcement.

The data can help make transportation safer, Blankenship said. Other state initiatives include installing LED road lighting, putting more speed feedback trailers and portable signs in construction or high-traffic zones, and a new online map tool for truck drivers.

Ride-sharing was also a topic of discussion at the forum. Lightsey said mobile app services like UBER and Lyft give drivers another flexible option.

“It’s a fascinating way they’ve done that,” he said. “People are looking very hard at ride-sharing in general. Maybe car ownership is not as important to them as it was.”

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Denise Meehan passed by each panel of a replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial that appeared in Lockport, noting the names of fallen soldiers on the wall.

“Every one of these names has a mother and father,” Meehan said.

Like them, the Plainfield resident is the mother of a soldier who was killed in action.

Her son, a U.S. Army soldier, died Nov. 1, 2010 in Afghanistan. She wore a Gold Star pin to show she was someone who lost a loved one in combat.

Meehan was one of dozens of people who came to The Moving Wall – a half-size replica of the memorial in Washington, D.C. – to pay their respects, find peace or remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The mobile wall has toured the nation for more 30 years to give people who can’t travel to the nation’s capital a chance to experience it themselves.

“It’s hope,” Meehan said as she looked at the replica. “The wall is hope we can still produce men of this caliber. The bigger hope is that the civilian world recognizes this.”

Thursday was the opening ceremony for The Moving Wall at 15052 Archer Ave. in Lockport. Visitors can see it for themselves until 3 p.m. Monday, when the wall will close and journey to Racine, Wisconsin on Aug. 27, according to The Moving Wall website.

Traffic was high at the ceremony, with cars filling up lots around the wall and lining up W. 151st St. State and local elected officials from neighboring towns such as Homer Glen and Romeoville also turned up to see the wall.

“This wall is a place of heal-

ing, for those who lost someone or simply for those who are hurting. There’s a peace that is found at the wall. … Vets can talk to their brothers one more time and they can say all they’ve been keeping inside for the last 50 years,” he said, before pausing and asking the audience to bear with him.

After his speech, a vigil candle was lit. The candle will stay lit until it is time for the wall to leave Lockport.

As of Jan. 2015, the memorial wall bears the names of 58,300 men and women who died in the Vietnam War, according to American Legion Post 18.

About 1,300 of these names are still unaccounted for prisoners of war or missing in action.

The wall is dedicated to the

2.7 million people who served in the U.S. military during the conflict.

Local fallen soldiers from Lockport, Romeoville and Lemont were also honored at the ceremony. Pictures of them were placed in front of the wall.

Their names include: John Ambrosini, William Carroll, Glen Jackson III, Gary Johnson, Leo Miller, Robert Mitchell, Charles Morrison, Gregory Muszalski, Paul Stein Jr., Frank Strnad, Chatwin Strother and Timothy Sweeney.

Among those who observed the wall after the ceremony was Thomas Cody, who watched it with his wife. Cody is band manager for the Bagpipes & Drums of the Emerald Society, Chicago Police Department that played during the ceremony.

After taking a long look, he went up to the wall and gently touched it with a fist.

“We can’t forget. That’s the bottom line,” Cody said. “I got a few friends on there. We have to come here to say hello and tell them they’re gone but never forgotten.”

County Board votes to lower road speed limit Manhattan-Arsenal Road speed limit to become 45 mph

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Will County Board voted Thursday to reduce the speed limit along the county-owned Manhattan-Arsenal Road between Route 53 and Brandon Road to 45 miles per hour in response to residents’ concerns about an uptick in truck traffic.

board members he appreciates the county’s efforts. The road has a speed limit of at least 50 mph.

He said he is among the 500 who signed a petition calling on the county to turn over jurisdiction of the road to Elwood or reduce the weight limit from 15 to 5 tons to eliminate commercial truck traffic along the stretch near the CenterPoint intermodals.

“At this point, the truck traffic from the commercial facilities has changed our neighborhood. It’s basically turned into a truck route,” Banis said.

The speed limit reduction is a start, he said, but residents

want more done.

However, it appears even Elwood’s hands are tied. Banis said he learned from Elwood officials Wednesday night during a Village Board meeting that federal law prohibits the village – even if it were to take over jurisdiction – from reducing the weight limit.

“We want our neighborhood back,” Banis said after the meeting Thursday. “We will continue to work to get it back.”

Elwood Police Chief Fred Hayes and Village President Bill Offerman did not immediately respond to requests for comment Thursday afternoon.

In other news, the County Board on Thursday: • Approved a tax abatement for Cadence Premier Logistics, a company moving its headquarters from Alsip to Joliet.

The abatement gives the company a five-year, 50-percent tax break, which amounts to $14,191 annually. The Joliet City Council approved its own tax abatement for the company during a meeting Tuesday.

• Approved replacement hires in the county’s Land Use and Geographic Information System departments and the county-owned Sunny Hill Nursing Home. All but one board member – Steve Balich,

R-Homer Glen – voted to approve the hires. Balich said he’s concerned about hiring with the county’s health insurance costs on the rise and uncertainty about the state budget impasse.

• Approved authorization for the Will County Sheriff’s Office to spend eviction cancellation fee revenue to bring the county’s foreclosure auctions program in-house. For 50 years, the county has outsourced its auctions program to Joliet law firm Dunn, Martin, Miller and Heathcock, but officials estimate considerable savings for the county with the program moving in-house.

But Walsh, a Democrat, cautioned that those projects must not jeopardize other critical areas of the budget, such as the county’s road fund – a revenue source targeted by some Republican board members in recent months to help pay for a new courthouse and other capital undertakings.

“The key question remains, how to pay for a new courthouse? Simply put, we cannot spend money we do not have,” Walsh said. “We must have a dedicated funding source to pay for the bonds without cutting funds for other critical areas of our county budget.”

And I think we can come together with an agreement,” Fricilone said. “But I think everyone knows on both sides of the aisle that the buildings that we have proposed, the sheriff’s facility and the courthouse, are needed. There may be some difference on how to do it but we know we have to do it.”

County officials also hope to reach a deal with the city of Joliet on ways the city can contribute to the project. An announcement is expected Friday about a tentative deal, but city officials have made it clear they can’t afford the $50 million the county initially requested.

Will County Board member Ragan Freitag, R-Wilmington, said Thursday she agrees with Walsh that the county needs to

be conservative in financing projects, but said prioritizing is also key.

“It’s about balancing between capital improvements and our road projects,” she said. “We’re trying to find a happy medium.”

Board member Cory Singer, R-Frankfort, who unsuccessfully ran against Walsh in 2012, said he doesn’t agree with Walsh on all things, but they certainly see eye-to-eye on protecting RTA funds.

The county should avoid depleting the road fund, he said, even if it means scaling back courthouse plans.

“I’m not convinced that, given all of the road improvement needs that we have, plus our facilities needs, building a $150 million to $200 million courthouse is feasible,” Singer said. “RTA funds can only be stretched so far before we deplete it and [risk losing] a respectable highway improvement program. It should be kept whole.”

In his speech, Walsh also highlighted the county’s job growth, improved unemployment rate and healthy AA+ bond rating. The county’s job growth rate is higher than neighboring DuPage and Grundy counties, he said.

suspends expedited payment program

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The Illinois Department of Human Services has suspended its expedited payment program for social services agencies because of the state’s budget impasse, according to a letter from the department sent Thursday to a Joliet-based agency.

The letter, addressed to Frank Di Bartolomeo, president and CEO for Services of Will, Grundy and Kankakee Counties Inc., stated that the department’s expedited payment program has been suspended, noting that the state’s comptroller’s office is current in processing expedited vouchers for fiscal year 2015.

Department spokeswoman Veronica Vera confirmed the letter’s legitimacy Thursday

afternoon, and said the state agency cannot “pay for anything for [fiscal year 2016] without a budget.”

The letter states the program will be re-evaulated for restarting expedited payments after the 2016 budget impasse has been resolved.

The program, in effect since 2005, was designed to alleviate financial hardships for local social services agencies due to delays in receiving payment from the state.

It allows qualified agencies to be moved to the head of the payment list for vouchers.

Di Bartolomeo said Services was re-approved for the department’s expedited payment program in July, but he received a letter Thursday stating the program had instead been suspended.

Social services agencies are up for renewal every six

months.

Di Bartolomeo said the suspended program places local agencies like Services – which are already dipping into cash reserves and surviving on a line of credit – in a more dire situation.

The Joliet-based agency – also known as Child and Family Connections – serves thousands of residents of Will, Grundy and Kankakee counties by providing early intervention programs for children with disabilities and other services for adults with developmental disabilities.

“Right now, if I have to wait 90 days to receive money I’m owed, our finances will not get past Sept. 15,” Di Bartolomeo said. “If I have to wait even longer, I’m going to max out my line of credit.

Now I don’t know when I’m going to get paid.”

MOKENA – A motorcycle run will be held this weekend in honor of a Mokena soldier who died last year in Afghanistan.

The event is to remember Army Pfc. Aaron Toppen and other fallen military members, according to Amy Toppen, Aaron’s sister.

“I think it’s important for this run that the participants are going to AbraAaron ham Lincoln Toppen National Cemetery,” she said. “It’s not just for Aaron. We want to remember all our fallen heroes. We feel strongly about the community who supported our family during a difficult time.”

Aaron was one of five American troops who died June 9, 2014, in southern Afghanistan

The city announced an open house public meeting with the Illinois Department of Transportation from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at City Hall, 222 E. Ninth St., to discuss plans for improving Routes 7 and 171. and fire district, will be exempt from the tax.

The new tax means local businesses, many of which were previously not required to take part in the vehicle stickers program, will pay for upkeep of the city’s roads, he said.

“The sticker program was a pretty inefficient and slightly unfair revenue source – some paid and others didn’t,” Benson said. “The [utility tax] seems to be a pretty balanced and consistent source of revenue across the board.”

The sticker program brought in about $262,000 a year, but also incurred about $45,000 in expenses, according to Benson.

With the new tax the city expects to raise about $360,000 from residents and possibly an equal amount from businesses, he said.

With an “aggressive” sixyear capital improvement plan in place to fix the city’s roads, the council decided it was time to remove the out-

dated sticker program without eliminating the needed revenue.

The ordinance was discussed at a Committee of the Whole meeting Aug. 5, when a number of options were considered, ranging from a 3 percent rate to the maximum 5 percent allowed by the state, he said.

Streit on Wednesday proposed a 1.5-percent rate as another option.

However, most council members felt the new rate should be close to what residents were paying for stickers.

Alderman Jason VanderMeer, who is the council’s finance liaison, said the mayor’s proposal “saves very little money” for the city.

“It is not an easy decision, there are a million factors, but no perfect facts,” he said.

Council members Joanne Bartelsen and Robert Perretta voted against the measure.

Bartelsen said that while “something needed to be done” she could not approve the ordinance “as it stands.”

Perretta felt the tax may place an undue burden on veterans’ organizations and residents with ailing family members on life-saving machines.

Resident Toni Susi told the council she would rather pay a flat annual rate for the stickers than a monthly charge that may accumulate to an even larger amount.

The property assessment equalization factor, often called the “multiplier,” is the method used to achieve uniform property assessments among counties, as required by law, according to a news release from the Revenue department.

“This equalization is particularly important because some

of the state’s 6,600 local taxing districts overlap into two or more counties,” the department said in a news release.

“If there were no equalization among counties, substantial inequities among taxpayers with comparable properties would result.”

State law requires property in Illinois to be assessed at onethird of its market value; farm property is assessed differently.

Each county’s equalization factor is determined by comparing the sales price of individual properties sold over the past three years to the assessed

value placed on those properties by the county supervisor of assessments/county assessor, according to the news release.

The equalization factor is 1 if the three-year average level of assessment is one-third of market value.

Assessments in Will County are at 33.25 percent of market value, based on sales of properties in 2012, 2013, and 2014, according to the news release.

The equalization factor currently being assigned is for 2014 taxes, payable in 2015. Last year’s equalization factor for the county was 1.0000.

LOCKPORT – Lockport residents will no longer have to trek to City Hall to pick up vehicle stickers – but they will be paying a new monthly utility tax after recent action taken by city officials.

The council Wednesday night approved 6-2 the tax on electric bills to replace the city’s vehicle sticker program.

The tax will be used solely for capital projects such as infrastructure repair and maintenance.

According to the new ordinance, a tax of about 3.5 percent – or .44 cents per kilowatt hour – for the first 2,000 kilowatts will be on residents’ and businesses’ electric bills starting Oct. 1.

That rate will drop to .288 cents per kwh for the next 48,000 hours, and continue to decrease as use grows.

Residents were required to pay $18 a vehicle for the stickers, with most averaging about two cars per household, according to City Administrator Ben Benson.

Having assessed an average of about 788 kwh used per month per household, the city estimates most residents will pay just less than $42 a year with the new tax, Benson said.

Robert W. Gold-Smith, 53, has filed a motion to dismiss his indictment for solicitation of murder, which he argues was obtained through another Will County Jail inmate’s perjury to the grand jury.

In November 2010, GoldSmith’s then-wife sought an order of protection after he grabbed her by the hair and punched her in the face as they walked out of a courtroom, police said. The lawyer has been in jail since March 2011 after allegedly violating that order of protection and approaching inmates to have her killed.

‘A hole in our state’s heart’: three firefighters mourned The ASSOCIATED PRESS TWISP, Wash. – The firefighters – members of a specially trained unit that is sent into danger ahead of everyone else to size up a wildfire – rushed up a narrow, winding gravel road with steep hills on either side.

It proved to be a deathtrap.

Their vehicle crashed, and before they could escape, flames rolled over them, killing three firefighters inside and injuring four others nearby, one critically, authorities said.

The tragedy Wednesday night cast a pall in Washington state and brought to 13 the number of firefighters killed across the West this year during one of the driest and most explosive wildfire seasons on record.

The blazes have “burned a big hole in our state’s heart,” Gov. Jay Inslee lamented Thursday, describing the out-

break as an “unprecedented cataclysm.”

“These are three big heroes protecting small towns,” the governor said, urging residents to “thank a firefighter.”

Fire officials with notebooks and cameras walked the hills and banks near Woods Canyon Road outside Twisp, investigating how the disaster happened. Authorities gave few details, shedding no light, for example, on the crash, other than to say that it was not the accident itself that killed the victims, but the fire.

The deaths happened in the scenic Methow River valley about 115 miles northeast of Seattle, where a series of blazes covering close to 140 square miles had merged. The flames burned an undetermined number of homes and triggered orders to about 1,300 people in the outdoor-recreation communi-

ties of Twisp and Winthrop to evacuate.

“It was a nightmare,” Okanogan County Sheriff Frank Rogers said. “Everything was burning.” He added, “We know it was a firestorm in there.”

All the dead were U.S. Forest Service firefighters.

The agency identified them as Tom Zbyszewski, 20; Andrew Zajac, 26; and Richard Wheeler, 31. Their hometowns weren’t immediately released.

They were from highly specialized crews that go into dangerous areas as fast as they can to examine a scene and report back to commanders on what needs to be done, said Bill Queen, a firefighting spokesman.

“It just kind of exploded and they got caught in a burn over,” said Queen, referring to what happens when conditions change so rapidly that flames overtake firefighters.

Status of Illinois services uncertain, important to take care of seniors By 2030, more than 20 percent of U.S. residents are projected to be aged 65 and over, compared with 13 percent in 2010 and 9.8 percent in 1970, according the U.S. Census Bureau.

With the Illinois budget situation yet unresolved, the status of state services that affect seniors is uncertain. There are steps, however, families can take to make sure their older loved ones are cared for in the

best manner possible.

An AARP guide titled “Prepare to Care: A Planning Guide for Families” doesn’t mince words: “So why not just throw this brochure on the ‘to do’ pile for another day?” it reads. “Because failing to plan for future responsibilities can make a bad situation worse.

And the loved ones you tried to protect by tip-toeing around ‘uncomfortable’ issues will be the ones who end up suffering

the most.”

The guide – which can be found at www.aarp.org/foundation/preparetocare – goes on to share some helpful tips for how to communicate with the elderly about the road ahead.

One tip reads: “Try not to approach the conversation with preconceived ideas about what your loved ones might say or how they might react. ‘Dad, I just wanted to have a talk about what you want. Let’s just

start with what is important to you.’ ” Another: “Be very straightforward with the facts. Do not hide negative information, but also be sure to acknowledge and build on family strengths.

‘As time goes on, it might be difficult to stay in this house because of all the stairs, but you have other options. Let’s talk about what those might be.’ ” And keep the conversation going. It doesn’t – and probably

shouldn’t – happen over just one cup of coffee or dinner.

People change, and situations evolve. Make sure you stay up to date on what your older relative finds important, while he or she still is able to communicate that to you.

Maintaining a dialogue with the elderly loved ones in your life is one of the best steps you can take to make sure you’re aware of their wants and needs – now and in the future.

TAKING ON THE BEST TEAMS Providence hopes tough schedule, hard work lead to success

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Providence enters the girls volleyball season as one, if not the best, ball-control team in the Joliet area.

The Celtics graduated only two starters and have a huge core of last year’s talented group returning. It could potentially be a great year for the team, but they’re starting the season with a huge test.

Providence opens Tuesday against Benet.

Opening against the reigning Class 4A state champion follows Providence’s game plan of the season: work hard throughout and play a tough schedule, so the team is playing its best volleyball come November.

They’re not worried at all about playing the Redwings to start the season.

“We’re a little bit more excited,” senior Rachel Alles said. “We worked really hard so we’re excited to see how our hard work, effort and focus have paid off.”

“Playing strong 4A teams helps us prepare,” senior Emily Boggetto said. “We’re going to see some really good teams before regionals. We’re working hard in practice to prepare ourselves for new things and different things that we didn’t see last year.”

Beating top 4A teams like Benet and Marist aren’t necessities this season for the Celtics, and neither is having a spectacular record. Staying competitive with those teams is, however.

son has talked previously on how playing a competitive 4A schedule and hanging with those teams will prepare the team for playoff time. The Celtics competed in 3A last season.

dence is focused on giving 100 percent every time the players touch a volleyball.

“I’m excited. I have a great group of girls,” Isaacson said.

I don’t know what everyone else has and what everyone else is going to do, but we’re working so hard, which will give us a chance to be successful this season.”

The Celtics are entering the season with a different aura.

When Alles and Boggetto speak about the season, excitement fills their eyes. They are confident in the team’s skills, but continually emphasize the importance of working and practicing hard every moment.

The team has goals that they want to reach, but they are focusing small.

First comes hard work in practice, then it transfers to each game, and no opponent is easy in their minds.

“We want to try and do what we couldn’t get done last year,” Boggetto said.

“We want to move past regionals, but there are a lot of good teams. We’re going continue to work hard every day.”

In the gym, the Celtics are working on the areas that Isaacson loves coaching and that Providence has shined in the past: serving, serve-receive and defense.

Providence is stronger than other area teams in those areas, but there’s no harm in making something that was really good really great.

Alles and Boggetto – two preseason all-area picks –

are two of five returning players who were very successful with their ball control. Some things will look a little different, though, from last year, even though the Celtics are returning so many players.

This season, Boggetto will transition from playing outside hitter to libero, a position she plays for 1st Alliance Volleyball Club and will play in college and a place where she can make the most impact for her team.

Providence will add a few hitters from the junior class, but the aggressive serving and consistent passing and defense will remain the same.

There are a few other things that might take Providence far this season aside from their returning talent, ball control and strict focus on getting better and not looking too far ahead.

The Celtics love playing with each other, already have a great team chemistry and believe that the only way that they’re going to succeed is by combining their strengths and playing as one.

They also are very ready and excited to compete against good teams.

“We can’t wait to get out on the court again,” Boggetto said. “There are some new teams that we get to play, but they’re good competition so I’m excited.”

“We definitely want to come back strong,” Alles said. “We’ve been working hard in the gym, so we’re ready for what’s coming up.”

Bolingbrook and Joliet West are capable of making noise in this, the final season for West and Joliet Central in the mighty SouthWest Suburban Blue. Next season, the Joliet schools will be in the Southwest Prairie. What a feel-good story West was last year, qualifying for the playoffs for the first time.

You can expect good things

Plainfield Central also is on a long losing streak. The Wildcats are 0-18 over the last two seasons. But they came close in some games last season, and much like Joliet Central, you get the feeling from teams such as Lemont, one victory could change their Wilmington and Coal City, which always have something entire outlook.

It’s an old hat – actually, 2 hats – for Bublitz Plainfield South football coach also balances being the Cougars’ athletic director

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – In the 2012-13 school year, Ken Bublitz pulled off an unlikely double. He already was Plainfield South’s head boys basketball coach, and he took over the football program as well.

Being the head coach of major sports in fall and winter seasons at a large school is a rare feat. But Bublitz fared well because of the work of his basketball assistant, current Cougars coach Tim Boe. Fast forward to 2015. During the summer, athletic director Bob Yanello was named principal at South. The Cougars needed an athletic director, an ideal situation for 54-year-old “Double Duty” Bublitz. He is entering the fall as the athletic director and football coach.

“I went into it knowing the athletic director job was posted,” Bublitz said. “It’s a oneyear position for me right now.

It was too late this year for me to give up football; I made it clear that I wanted to stay with football.

“After this year, if I want the AD job and they want me, then I would have to give up football. Otherwise, I would want to stay with football.”

Bublitz said the situation of how the dual role came about is not unlike a few years ago.

“It’s very similar circumstances to when I coached basketball and football at the same time,” he said. “I knew Mike [Briscoe, South’s former football coach] was going to move on. I was resigned to the fact they would hire an external candidate, but they didn’t.

I didn’t think that position would be available again, so I went for it.”

Before Bublitz came to South for the 2004-05 school year, he was at Streator. He got an inkling there of what it might be like to pull double duty.

“When I was head basketball coach at Streator, I was interim AD for a semester,” he said.

Bublitz’s career in education has included 22 years as a social studies teacher and the previous seven or eight years as a dean. He always has been a Ken Bublitz coach as well.

“I never necessarily thought I would be the AD here, but I never ruled it out,” he said. “I have been in coaching 30 years and felt the opportunity would not come around again.

“Because of my background, I have a good perspective on everything. I’ve seen both sides of things. I can take different perspectives. Being the AD wasn’t something I felt like I had to do, but it was a good opportunity inside our building. It’s a chance to gain valuable experience.”

Bublitz said it could not possibly happen without superb help inside the athletic office, specifically from athletic assistant Melanie Jones and assistant athletic director Leah Carter.

“Melanie Jones and Leah Carter are phenomenal in what they do, and they are able to direct me,” Bublitz said.

“They truly are amazing. It’s like having the good assets, the good assistants, that make an entire football or basketball program work.

“It’s been a lot of learning on the fly so far for me. With football season, with the fall season, going on, there is plenty to keep track of. I wouldn’t be able to do it without Melanie and Leah.”

Bublitz has been in South’s football program since the 2005 season, serving as offensive coordinator for Briscoe until becoming head coach. He has good feelings about his team now that summer is in the

rear-view mirror.

“We had a nice summer,” he said. “We stayed pretty basic for the most part. We got enough done that heading into fall practice, we were where we wanted to be. Now, until the season begins [August 28], it’s time to implement specifics.”

Bublitz noted the slow start the Cougars endured last season. They were 0-3 before turning things around. They were 4-4 entering the Week 9 game against Oswego, where a tough loss knocked them out of playoff contention.

“We had three games early where we scored almost no touchdowns,” he said. “Now I feel more comfortable, especially on the defensive end.

We have nine kids back on defense.”

Not that things won’t go well on the field, but if they don’t, the football coach will look in the mirror and answer to his boss, the athletic director.

Thanksgiving weekend.

Lots of turkey, and Joliet area high school football teams playing for state championships.

OK, turkey is on the menu every year. And I’ll admit, our area does not always have a team or teams in the state finals. However, we never have a season where we say we did not have any teams capable of reaching the pinnacle.

Last season, Providence claimed the Class 7A state championship and Wilmington won 3A, with both winning thrillers at the University of Illinois in Champaign. Lemont, meanwhile, finished second to powerful Nazareth in 6A. The story will be the same this season as several area teams, on paper, appear capable of making things exciting in the postseason.

The usual suspects are out there. Joliet Catholic and Providence will be very good.

Greenup gets fourth win of season SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – Channahon’s Brad Greenup won his fourth D’Arcy GMC STARS series feature of the season Saturday night at Grundy County Speedway, but it didn’t come easy.

Billy Hulbert, trying to go back-to-back with his second win of the season, challenged Greenup on the final lap. He took the high side around Gree-

nup at the exit of turn two and the two were even down the backstretch. Hulbert stayed high with the advantage heading into the final two corners, but a small wiggle in Turn 4 allowed Greenup to pull ahead.

Greenup joins Jimmy Anderson, Kyle Hamilton and Austin Prock as drivers with four wins in a season. Hamilton has the record with five victories, posted last season.

Slammers lose doubleheader

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After putting up some big offensive numbers in Wednesday’s game with Florence, the Joliet Slammers looked to continue that type of productivity in Thursday’s doubleheader to close out the series.

But Joliet only managed to score two runs in one inning of each of the two seven-inning contests as the Freedom swept the Frontier League twinbill by 5-2 and 9-2 scores at Silver Cross Field.

The Slammers (33-48) only collected three hits in the opener and finished with nine hits in the nightcap. Joliet scored 10 runs on 12 hits in Wednesday’s opener.

After Florence grabbed a 2-0 lead in the opening inning of the finale, Jack Cleary tied the score in the bottom of the second when he homered to left to drive in Joe Staley.

The Bolingbrook graduate extended David Oraee of Greeley, Colo., to the 18th hole before missing a birdie putt that earned Oraee a 2-up victory.

For Cooke, the 2015 Illinois Open winner, losing to Oraee in the Round of 32 meant the end of the summer season but also the start of his senior year at North Carolina State.

According to information supplied by Regan’s management company, Regan made an appearance in the 2014 Chris Rock movie “Top Five.”

Regan also recently was seen in Seinfeld’s “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.”

In addition, according to his website, Regan made 26 appearances on Dave Letterman’s show, visited more than 80 cities each year between 2005 and 2009 and played a sold-out show in 2013 at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado.

It’s a different sort of life for someone who almost became an accountant.

From money to funny

A jock who played track and football in high school, Regan attended Heidelberg College in Ohio – now Heidelberg University – on an athletic scholarship, where he played football and studied economics.

“My dad was an accountant for Eastern Airlines and I had taken a college accounting class in high school and I got an ‘A,’ something I didn’t see a lot of in high school,” Regan said. “I thought, ‘If I got an A in something, it’s probably the path I should take.’ ” In college, Regan quickly discovered he didn’t like accounting. A football coach suggested he consider theater and communications because Regan made the entire team laugh. Regan said he didn’t know if the coach was “complimenting my humor or insulting my athletic ability,” but decided to take the advice.

Regan recalled how, in high school, a theater friend of his attended football games to support Regan – and then chastised Regan because he never reciprocated. Regan told the friend he didn’t like plays.

“I wish I could go into a time machine and tell him, ‘You’re right and I’m wrong,’ “ Regan said. “And tell me when the next play is so I can cheer you on.”

Ironically, another player on the same college football team had a role in a musical, held in a small theater on campus. So Regan went to see the musical. Regan said he sat in the back, watched the athlete perform and realized the coach was right.

“It was all strange and beautiful, and he was having a blast,” Regan said. “I thought to myself, ‘I’d like to dress up like a cowboy and sing songs.’ ” Regan started taking speech classes and accepting offers to emcee different events. The more Regan emceed, and the more humor he added – and the more

invitations he received. At 10 credits short of completing his degree, Regan quit college.

“I called my parents to tell them I was dropping out to become a stand-up comedian,” Regan said. “They said, ‘Whatever you choose to do, we will support you.’ I’d like to think I’ll be that open-minded when my kids tell me things like that.”

Regan assumed he’d have to move to either California or New York, but when he returned home to Florida, he read an advertisement for a comedy club in Fort Lauderdale.

The local acts were not part regular show and management made sure the audience knew it, Regan said, by announcing the local comedians’ brief appearances after the regular shows had concluded.

From there, Regan said, his career was a succession of graduations: becoming a part of the “real” acts, headlining at the comedy club, his first TV appearance, appearing on Letterman.

At the heart of Regan

At the beginning of his career, Regan said his jokes were not 100 percent clean, but his style has never been blue.

“I don’t think it’s any less real than other

comedy,” Regan said. “It’s just a different way of approaching it.”

Married with two children – a 16-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl – Regan is planning his costume for his daughter’s Disney-themed birthday party. Regan then said his son also is into comedy – as a fan – and can beat him at video games.

Although he hopes Joliet-area fans come out to the Rialto and enjoy his show, Regan also has solid goals for his future – and they have nothing to do with being funny.

“I want to continue to be a good dad,” Regan said, “and to be happy and kind.”

Newer, second-generation antihistamines have fewer side effects. They are less likely to cause drowsiness and nasal dryness than the older ones, but still can cause these symptoms in some people. Desloratadine (Clarinex) and azelastine (Astelin nasal spray) are available by prescription.

Corticosteroid nasal sprays reduce swelling and mucus in the nasal passageway. They also relieve nasal symptoms. These sprays require a doctor’s prescription.

Guaifenesin is another ingredient to look for. It thins the mucus so that it drains more easily.

(Mucinex is especially effective.)

Decongestants also reduce swelling and open up the nasal and sinus passages. Also, a steam bath sometimes can do the trick.

Sometimes sinus inflammation and congestion can trigger migraine headaches in people prone to getting them. There are several distinctive features of many migraine headaches. Often they begin on one side of the head; are located behind the eye or in the temple; are pounding or throbbing, rather than steady; are accompanied by nausea; are accompanied by changes in vision (blurring, black spots, flashes of light). Different medicines are needed to prevent migraines.

What’s the best way to treat sinus headaches?

Dear Reader: The sinuses are air-filled spaces above, between and beneath your eyes, flanking your nose.

Both the nose and sinuses are lined with a thin membrane that swells and produces mucus in response to irritation. Normally, the mucus from the sinuses drains through small openings, known as ostia, into the nose. The stuff you blow out when your nose is congested usually is mucus produced by the membranes in your sinuses and in your nose.

Any condition that causes the nose or sinus membranes to become swollen can narrow or completely block the ostia. This results in a sinus headache.

Sinus headaches can occur in three situations: • when the membranes become inflamed; • when fluid builds up in the sinuses and can’t drain out through the nose; • when pressure in the sinuses is lower than the environmental air pressure.

Allergies are a major sinus irritant. Viral infections or exposure to secondhand smoke, perfume or other inhaled chemicals also can cause a sinus headache. Whatever the cause, sinus headache pain most often is felt in the center of the face, the bridge of the nose and the cheeks.

People with allergies are especially susceptible to sinus headaches. To treat your sinus headache, start with an over-the-counter antihistamine. Histamine is a substance released during an allergic reaction.

It causes swelling of the mucous membranes and mucus production. Antihistamines block the action of histamine.

Some antihistamines (OTC and prescription) have bothersome side effects. They can make you

Dear Abby: A man I work with found a dog on his way to the office. He picked it up, took it home and was immediately talking about what a good playmate the dog would make. He said he tried to call the local animal shelter, but was put on hold twice, so he gave up.

I felt he should have made more of an attempt to find the owner before claiming it as his own. I immediately posted a free “found dog” ad online and, three weeks later, received a message.

It turned out the dog belonged to a 72-year-old woman who lives alone. One day she discovered her back door open and her dog missing. I put my co-worker in touch with the lady and said I’d leave it to him to do what he felt was best. After confirming the dog was indeed hers, he reluctantly returned it to her.

He is now telling everyone he’s very sad at his loss and that it was “almost as hard as having a dog put to sleep.”

He’s receiving major sympathy from some of our co-workers who seem to be upset with me for posting the found dog ad. Am I wrong to think this small effort should have been expected in this situation, and what I did was the right thing? – Did The Right Thing
