JOLIET – A second witness testified Wednesday that Velma Franklin said Eric Glover Sr. had threatened to kill her with a gun two months before she was found dead in June 2002.

JoAnn Franklin, the mother of the victim, told Judge Carla Alessio-Policandriotes in Will County Court that her daughter and Glover Sr., 42, had a good relationship for the first few years they were together, but that changed around the time their daughter was born in 1998.

“They started arguing and fighting. ... I never saw physical [attacks] but was told about them,” Franklin said.

Velma Franklin was found shot to death on June 17, 2002, in the Third Avenue home she shared with Glover Sr. and her four children. Glover Sr. was arrested on murder charges, but prosecutors decided at the

time there was not enough evidence to proceed to trial. He was charged again in June 2012 after the Will County State’s Attorney’s office reviewed the cold case. Glover Sr. already was in prison on other convictions.

Glover Sr. is the biological father of Eric Glover Jr., who was strangled to death in January 2013 in a house on Hickory Street at the age of 22. Relatives have said Eric Glover Sr. was not involved in his son’s life.

Prosecutors want the statements Velma Franklin made to other people before her death and a threat Glover Sr. made to a female police officer during a 2009 arrest used against him in his upcoming trial.

JoAnn Franklin said about 2000 she saw Velma Franklin had gotten stitches for a gash on her head. Her daughter initially said she’d banged her head on a car door. “[Actually] they’d been fighting and she was trying to get out of the car when Eric

closed it on her,” Franklin said.

Franklin’s account of an incident in April 2002 matched what her daughter told her best friend Shelease Adams, who testified earlier this week.

Velma Franklin told them Glover Sr. had gotten a handgun, put it against her head during an argument, and then fired it into the wall behind her. Franklin said her daughter was “scared ... and afraid” after the incident and began trying to get Glover Sr. to move out.

“I asked him about it and he said, ‘Well. It was an accident the gun went off.’ ... He didn’t say anything else,” Franklin testified.

Police found a bullet that had been fired into the wall when investigating Velma Franklin’s death two months later. Prosecutors have said the bullet taken from the wall matched to the same gun as the bullet taken from Franklin’s skull.

Shorewood library reopens, but could close again for demolition

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – The Shorewood-Troy Library reopens Thursday after being closed for three days, but might close again.

The library was closed for a scheduled demolition that has yet to occur.

The demolition is tentatively rescheduled for Friday.

But library Director Jennie Mills said that could change as well.

“It’s possible we will close again,” Mills said. “We’ll see how bad the dust in the air is but we’ll try to stay open if we can.”

Library officials were expecting to close the library Monday through Wednesday for the demolition of the two-story windowed wall at the back of the building.

“We closed with the best information we had available at the time,” Mills said, adding that the administration erred

Mills acknowledged the effect of library closures on patrons and thanked them for their patience.

“We want this project done and over as much as they do,” she said.

Joliet police department honors Jonathan Walsh 10 years after his death

During the game at Silver Cross Field, Jonathan said, “ ‘Pops, if I ever get killed in the line of duty, know that I died doing what I desperately wanted to do,’ ” Gregory Walsh recalled Wednesday.

A week later, on Aug. 20, 2004, Joliet Police Officer Jonathan Walsh, 27, died Jonathan in a car crash Walsh while responding to a burglar alarm. His parents and more than 50 fellow officers gathered Wednesday to mark the 10-year anniversary of the most recent law enforcement death in Will County.

Chief Brian Benton called Walsh’s death one of the most painful experiences his colleagues have gone through.

“For some of us, the pain is still too fresh,” Benton said.

“But that pain, that heartache helps to serve as motivation.

John’s death was not in vain.

His sacrifice helps to remind us of the daily risks we face as police officers.”

Jonathan’s father served 34 years with the Worth Police Department. Norma Walsh said her son had wanted to be a police officer since he was 2, and dressed up as a cop every Halloween.

Walsh became a patrol officer who also worked in the bicycle patrol and gang suppression units.

About 7 p.m. Aug. 20, 2004, Walsh was headed to an alarm at Pilcher Park Nature Center when a Chevrolet Blazer came out of a driveway off Route 6 just east of Briggs Street.

Walsh’s squad car clipped the back of the SUV and smashed into a construction crane parked on the side of the road.

He was wearing his seat belt, but did not have his lights or sirens activated.

Norma Walsh had been walking with a friend in Orland Park that evening when she checked her cellphone to

see several missed calls from the department.

“I told them I was about to get on the expressway and they said they’d come and get me. [Hearing that] deep down

I knew, but I wouldn’t let my mind go there. I kept thinking it wasn’t true,” she remembered.

Norma Walsh said she has felt a tremendous pride over the past 10 years to learn about

some of the things her son had done in his career and never talked about. She finds comfort with her faith in God that the family will be reunited in heaven.

A cross was set up Wednesday near the scene of Walsh’s death with his name and the words “In the line of duty.”

The memorial cross is set in black gravel with a strip of blue across it.

The ceremony included the Joliet Police Honor Guard standing vigil, a prayer from department chaplain Fr. Chris Groh, “Amazing Grace” played by the department’s Pipes and Drums Corps and “Taps” by bugler Eric Zettergren. Benton and Walsh’s father also spoke.

“I am proud to say that I worked with Officer Jonathan Walsh on the Joliet Police Department. John, you will forever be remembered as a hero on our department,” Benton said.

Gregory Walsh said the family was “humbled” to see the support his colleagues have given them over the past decade and their son “truly wanted” to serve the city of Joliet.

Gregory Walsh recalled what his son would say when the retired officer went with him on occasional ridealongs.

“We’d go to a high point ... where you could see the lights.

Jonathan would tell me, ‘That’s my city,’ with great pride and conviction,” Gregory Walsh said.

ICC judge tells Elwood to hand over documents

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com CHICAGO – An Illinois Commerce Commission administrative law judge has ordered the village of Elwood to hand over requested documents in the ongoing case over safety at the Walter Strawn Drive railroad crossing.

During an ICC status hearing Wednesday in Chicago, Administrative Law Judge Latrice Kirkland-Montague called CenterPoint Properties’ requests for documents “not too burdensome or onerous,” and ordered Elwood to comply with the request by Sept. 15, when a discovery status hearing is scheduled to take place.

Wednesday’s ICC hearing was one of several held recently that relates to the ongoing issues at the intersection of Route 53 and Walter Strawn Drive. Earlier this year, the ICC – which governs the state’s railway system – reopened a 2001 case brought forward by Elwood amid safety concerns.

The crossing gates were broken nearly 50 times in 2013.

CenterPoint first requested documents, traffic study data and witness names from Elwood back in June, but village officials have refused to respond to those requests, said Michael Scotti, attorney for CenterPoint.

Both sides accused each other Wednesday of delaying the case.

David Schmidt, an attorney for Elwood, argued CenterPoint’s requests were part of a delay tactic to hold up the evidentiary hearing that was originally scheduled for Wednesday.

The request for documents, he said, has taken attention away from the case itself and the solutions needed to increase public safety at the Walter Strawn Drive railroad crossing.

“There are 10,000 pages of documents that have been submitted to the parties of this case concerning the situation at this crossing,” Schmidt said. “... We’ve provided our list of witnesses. We’ve enumerated and referenced documents that

have previously been submitted. All traffic count studies, to the best of my knowledge, have already been turned over.”

Schmidt said he plans to provide expert witness reports by the Sept. 15 hearing.

Scotti agreed to withdraw his initial request for witness video depositions – a request that attorneys for both Elwood and Union Pacific called unnecessary at this point.

After the hearing, Scotti

said the request for information is not a delay tactic on CenterPoint’s part but simply “part of the process” so surprise witnesses can be avoided when possible at the evidentiary hearing.

Attorneys for both Elwood and Union Pacific also updated Kirkland-Montague about safety improvements recently made at the crossing.

Union Pacific engineers are working this week to lengthen the delay between the red light and the crossing bars coming down to give trucks more time to clear the crossing. The delay will increase from three seconds now to nine seconds with the hope that semitrailers will have time to clear the intersection.

UP attorney Mack Shumate Jr. said railway engineers should have the crossing gate times adjusted by the end of the week. In the meantime, traffic at the crossing should improve, Scotti said, with construction now completed along Interstate 55 over the Des Plaines River Bridge.

The two sides disagreed over whether increased police presence at the crossing has made the intersection safer.

Since late July, two Will County sheriff’s deputies have been stationed at Route 53 and Walter Strawn Drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays.

The squad cars also escort funeral processions traveling to the Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.

Shumate said Wednesday that Union Pacific is currently footing the bill – which works out to be about “$500 a day” for the off-duty deputies. CenterPoint was previously working out a contract with the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

Despite police presence at the crossing, Shumate told the judge he heard from UP that the gates were crashed through Tuesday. Elwood Police Chief Fred Hayes said after the hearing he also received an additional report of a semitrailer “striking” the gates Wednesday.

Hayes said a police detail earlier this month showed the marked squad cars are not effective. Hayes said Elwood officers issued 12 tickets over two days while the sheriff’s vehicles were there – six for direct violations of the traffic signal.

4 firefighter paramedics hired

JOLIET – The City Council hired four firefighter paramedics Tuesday after a motion to table the agenda item failed to receive a second.

Voting on the original matter – which was included in a group of routine agenda items including meeting minutes, payroll and other financial reports – was held up by District 1 Councilman Larry Hug, who requested that the paramedic hiring be broken out to be considered at a later time.

According to City Attorney Jeff Plyman, the council members who made and seconded the original motion agreed to revise that motion to include

everything but the hirings. The council then voted to approve the amended motion.

After about 40 minutes of discussion on the hirings, Hug then made a motion to table the matter, Plyman said. That motion failed to receive a second.

Another motion then was made to approve the hirings, which the council approved with Hug voting “present,” Plyman said.

The hirings bring the Joliet Fire Department’s workforce back to its pre-recession employment level of 209 firefighters.

During council discussion of the matter, Hug noted that the fire department already has gone through 80 percent of its overtime budget for the year – about $1.36 million. He estimated at the current rate the department would go about 50 percent above its overtime budget by the end of the year.

“If we’re going to commit to more hires, than the OT budget should come down,” Hug said.

said the overtime budget was inflated because the department was short firefighters at the beginning of the year. He estimated transfers from the regular payroll into overtime would reduce OT expenses by about $400,000 to $500,000.

Formhals said the new hires were necessary to maintain the 10 floater positions required to maintain 24-7 fire service. The floater positions cover firefighters who are out sick or on workman’s compensation – at least two or three positions per day – as well as those on vacation, Formhals said.

“I need nine to 10 floaters per day just to cover the shifts,” Formhals said. “Our only other option is to take equipment out of service.”

Lack of staffing has prevented full operation of Ambulance 9, which has operated only intermittently since about 2012, Formhals said.

Gempel video played in court in murder and arson case

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Bruce Gempel initially denied killing an 89-yearold Crest Hill woman and setting her house on fire while he was being questioned by police days after the slaying.

Excerpts from the video recording of Gempel’s interview with police were played in court Wednesday during a hearing to determine if his statements are admissible at trial.

Gempel, 50, is charged with murder and arson in the Nov. 18, 2012, death of Dorothy Dumyahn.

A passing off-duty firefighter noticed smoke coming from Dumyahn’s house in the 2300 block of Caton Farm Road, forced the door open and brought her outside to discover she was already dead.

Dumyahn had been stabbed 20 times, according to police.

The case was investigated by the Will-Grundy Major Crimes Task Force and Gempel was brought in for a polygraph exam at the Romeoville Police Department before being interviewed by Lockport Detective Bill Sheehan and Joliet Detective Carlos Matlock.

“It’s my understanding Gempel asked for an attorney in the 33 minutes of interview time [excluding breaks] three times and the questioning continued,” Judge Robert Livas said while Sheehan testified.

Since Sheehan did not recall answering Gempel, part of the recording was played. It appears toward the end of the interview, Gempel was told he failed a polygraph exam about Dumyahn’s death.

Hug said other city departments appeared to more effectively operate within their means. According to city records, the public utilities department has spent about 60 percent of its overtime budget, while the police department has spent about 45 percent.

The public works department, on the other hand, has spent 147 percent of its overtime budget, primarily because of heavy snowfall over the winter.

City Manager Jim Hock noted that city’s new finance director, Jim Ghedotte, will be starting next week to help address the situation.

His attorneys argued to Livas that police should not have questioned him further and all of the statements made after his arrest are inadmissible.

Prosecutors said the “confession” Gempel gave about 12 hours later was obtained after investigators had obtained additional probable cause to keep him in custody.

Livas is set to rule Monday whether the statements can be used.

Minor injuries in accident at Route 53, West Manhattan

Lockport to consider digital billboard LOCKPORT – City officials in Lockport will consider approving the construction of a digital billboard to bolster the city’s tourism and marketing efforts.

At Wednesday’s committee of the whole meeting, City Administrator Ben Benson informed council members on a proposal to build a digital billboard that will be used to market city events such as Old Canal Days and information from Main Street Lockport, Inc. Construction of the sign – along with maintenance and operation – would be handled by BRT Outdoor LLC, he said. The V-shaped billboard is designed to have two screens and would be located on 159th Street.

To move the project forward, City Council members would need to approve several agreements with BRT Outdoor LLC and Lockport Square LLC, along with an amendment to a city ordinance. The city would be able to display more than 32,400 messages per month with the sign, city officials said.

Digital billboards have been used in neighboring communities such as Joliet, Romeoville and Bolingbrook.

“They seem to be working well and they’re well-received,” Benson said.

Police squad car purchases City Council members also will consider approving a request from the Lockport Police Department to replace two patrol squad vehicles that have exceeded 100,000 miles.

Police officials are planning to buy two 2015 Ford Police Interceptor vehicles using $30,000 from their capital projects budget and $24,918 from their federal seizure account. The police will buy the vehicles from Greenway Motors, which was the lowest bidder of three automotive dealerships they consulted.

Police officials also noted they have four additional squad cars that have in excess of 87,000 miles that would need replacement in the next budget cycle.

are requesting the city enter a parking agreement with them to regulate and enforce city traffic laws on school property.

City Attorney Ron Caneva said school officials want to put up traffic signs at the schools. One at Kelvin Grove Middle School would prohibit a left-hand turn at their parking lot, he said.

The city has a parking agreement in several other places, he said.

“We currently have one with the [Lockport] high school, as well as Lago Vista and a couple other shopping centers,” he said.

CREST HILL – Parents criticized Richland School District 88a board members Wednesday for issues related to the teachers’ vote of no confidence in Superintendent Michael Early and Principal Kelly Whyte.

After their comments, a former board member praised the board for affirming confidence in the administrators.

“How can you be addressing the climate when it’s been going on for four years,” Richland parent Bridget Wisz said.

She questioned the board’s connection with staff, students, teachers and the community following the vote of no confidence.

Richland parent Richard Foss was concerned with the district’s communication with parents. He referenced a letter sent out to parents Tuesday, which was the first direct communication he received from the board about issues with teachers.

“I was stunned to hear what I heard with a no confidence vote,” Foss said, adding that the June 12 board meeting was the first time he heard about the discord.

The vote of no confidence by teachers came at the June 12 board meeting. Out of 44 tenured teachers, 39 voted no confidence in Early and 33 voted no confidence in Whyte. No non-tenured teachers participated in the vote.

Teachers union representatives said that Early and

Whyte created a hostile work environment and have retaliated against teachers for speaking out against the administration’s decisions.

At that meeting, board President Julie Starasinich stated that the board had complete confidence in Early, Whyte and the administration, supporting their decisions.

At the July 16 board meeting, teachers’ representatives read a letter by the local union president that asked the board to take “swift, substantive action,” to remedy the situation.

Starasinich reaffirmed confidence in the administration and said no formal complaints were filed with her as board president. But she would investigate any complaint that comes to her.

Glen Conklin, a former board member and a parent of former students, commended the board for having confidence in the administration on Wednesday, especially for Early who Conklin noted has been evaluated several times by the board.

“The bottom line is the board evaluates the superintendent. The teachers and union do not evaluate him,” Conklin said.

A complaint from the teachers union came soon after the July meeting. In response, Starasinich said in a statement Wednesday that the board hired an independent investigator “to ensure an impartial examination of the issues.”

Early confirmed that the independent investigator is Joliet attorney James Harvey.

At the opening of the fair Wednesday, Grames of Tinley Park, along with his two sons, were surprised to see not only cows but sheep, horses and other livestock shown at the fair.

“I was amazed at how large they are. ...They didn’t smell as bad as I thought,” he said.

The 111th annual Will County Fair, at the Will County Fairgrounds at 710 S. West St., will last until Sunday and feature livestock shows, carnival rides, games and demolition derbies. Visitors like Grames who come to the fair get exposed to animals and agricultural practices they wouldn’t normally see in the suburbs, organizers have said.

Attendance at the Will County Fair is affected by the fact that school is in session when it starts. But Ron Meyer, president of the Will County Fair Association, said he expects attendance to pick up this week as more events such as the demolition derby are held.

Veterans and senior citizens get into the fair Thursday with a $2 gate admission fee per person. Other attendees are admitted to the fair for $4, with children ages 10 and younger able to get in free.

owed to them for the past few years, Hampton said.

In response to state funding cuts, the Joliet school district has cut back on spending by as much as 10 percent, Hampton said.

Cuts have included curtailing field trips and reworking school bus routes to reduce transportation costs. Maintenance costs also are projected to decrease, as the district leased about 100 new buses this past summer.

Staff has been cut back through attrition and overtime has been reduced, Hampton added.

Enrollment growth has remained at about 50 students a year, compared to 150 students coming in about seven years ago, Hampton said.

The only large projects in the current budget are a proposed new concession stand at Joliet Central High School, expected to cost about $350,000, and improvements to Central and Joliet West music programs, which will cost about $50,000 a year.

A new $28 million student center being built at Joliet Central has been funded through a bond issue. That project broke ground earlier in June and is expected to be completed in spring 2016.

Board President Jeff Pierson said the district has not increased student fees for the fourth year and continues to “live within its means.”

JOLIET – The Joliet Township High School District 204 budget has a surplus for the second straight year.

The balanced budget presented to the school board Tuesday follows deficits of $6.2 million in 2012 and $8.9 million in 2013.

The tentative budget shows a surplus of more than $600,000 by the end of the 201415 school year. However, the final budget will likely show a balance closer to zero, Assistant Superintendent for Business Services Ilandus Hampton told the school board during a presentation Tuesday.

Hampton’s office continues to fine-tune the budget as actual numbers for state grants and state aid come in, he said.

A public hearing and final budget presentation is scheduled to take place at the regular board meeting at 7 p.m.

Sept. 16 at the district office.

The school district ended the last fiscal year with a surplus of $5.3 million. Revenues were $114.7 million and expenditures were $109.3 million.

This year, projected revenues and expenditures are $98.2 million and $97.6 million, respectively.

“Because of the uncertainty with our state revenues and some concern over our local tax revenues, I have been very conservative in the revenue estimates,” Hampton said.

Last year, Gov. Pat Quinn called for massive cuts to state spending on school buses. According to Hampton’s report, “This is a clear statement about the state’s commitment for regular transportation; a complete disregard for the local and rural communities and students that need transportation to their schools.”

Furthermore, Joliet and other school districts eligible for state aid have received 89 percent of what is statutorily

Debbie’s previous employment entailed Kevin’s Corner in Braidwood as well as Wilmington Lanes.

She was an avid animal lover, who took pleasure in camping and fishing. Debbie enjoyed traveling and game nights, playing cards.

Many memorable times were made picnicking and poolside with a good bloody Mary. Debbie will be remembered for her courageous defeat of cancer and her never ending love of family and her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband of 36 years Victor; children: Jarrett Howard and Evan (Mark) Hazzard; grandsons: Porter and Parker Hazzard; sisters: Renee (George) Zouganelis and Krista Thomas; and her mother-in-law, Jeannette (the late Donald A.) She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Nick and her sister Lucy Eckstein.

She is survived by her sister, Sister Rose Olivieri, RSM, who resides in Fremont, Ohio, and sister-in-law, Barbara, of Mansfield, Ohio.

Sister Mary was a treasured member of the Sisters of St. Francis of Mary Immaculate (Joliet) for 60 years.

Before entering religious life, Sister Mary was a member of St. Peter’s Parish in Mansfield, Ohio.

She graduated from St. Peter’s High School. Sister Mary earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of St. Francis (University of St. Francis) Joliet, and took graduate courses at the University of Toledo, the University of Dayton and DePaul University.

Indian yoga guru B.K.S. Iyengar dies at 95

By NIRMALA GEORGE The Associated Press NEW DELHI – Indian yoga guru B.K.S. Iyengar, who helped popularize yoga around the world and wrote 14 books on the subject, died Wednesday at age 95.

Bellur Krishnamachar Sundararaja Iyengar’s death was reported on his website as well as by major Indian TV stations, which said he had been hospitalized with a kidney ailment over the past week in the western city of Pune.

Born in a poor family in Bellur village in the southern Indian state of Karnataka, Iyengar was a sickly child who suffered multiple illnesses including typhoid and tuberculosis.

When he was 15, a relative introduced him to yoga in an attempt to build his resistance to disease. By the time he was 18, he moved to Pune to practice yoga and to teach its techniques to others.

Iyengar created his own brand of yoga, called “Iyengar yoga,” and established studios in 72 countries where yoga

practitioners are taught ways to improve breathing, concentration and meditation.

By the mid-1950s word of Iyengar yoga spread in Europe, where he began teaching many new converts, including violinist Yehudi Menuhin and author Aldous Huxley.

The popularity of Iyengar yoga spurred him to write a book called “Light on Yoga,” explaining the 216 yoga postures that formed what he called the science and art of yoga. The book became a global best seller with more than 3 million copies sold and has

since been translated into 17 languages.

Iyengar, easily recognizable by his bushy eyebrows and silvery locks of shoulder-length hair, practiced yoga until two months ago and even did headstands in his 90s.

Iyengar yoga’s physically challenging poses and breathing techniques have been adopted by mainstream medical practitioners to help patients suffering from diabetes, high blood pressure and chronic back pain.

In 2004, Iyengar was named

one of the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine.

In a condolence message, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Iyengar as “a fine guru, scholar and a stalwart who brought yoga into the lives of many across the world.”

President Pranab Mukherjee said, “The nation has lost a personality who devoted his entire life to the teaching and dissemination of India’s ancient knowledge and wisdom to millions all around the world.”

Marijuana town hall attracts hundreds in Chicago

CHICAGO – Will retailers be able to open a package of marijuana to give customers a whiff? Will a master grower be able to work for multiple cultivation centers?

Is medicinal marijuana chocolate considered candy?

Those were among the questions at a standing-room-only town hall meeting about the application process for Illinois’ new medical marijuana program.

Attended by more than 500 people, the meeting Wednesday at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago gave patients, caregivers and aspiring business owners a chance to learn how the application process will work.

Entrepreneurs – called “ganjapreneurs” in the dialect of the emerging industry – are bracing for competition as they prepare paperwork for a two-week application window that opens Sept.

debates. Quinn called on Rauner to “come out of the gopher hole” and debate him.

Illinois students improve slightly on ACT test

SPRINGFIELD – This year’s Illinois high school graduates performed slightly better on the ACT college entrance exam than last year’s, in one of the final years test will serve as a mandatory state assessment.

Illinois students’ 20.7 average score on the four-subject test just edged the previous year’s 20.6, but it fell just short of the national average of 21. The test is graded on a 36-point scale.

State education officials praised the progress Wednesday, highlighting the fact that Illinois’

scores were the second-highest among the dozen states that administered the ACT to all of their high school graduates. But the testing company’s report showed some noteworthy performance gaps among Illinois’ students.

KANKAKEE – Officials in Kankakee have approved the construction of a transitional housing facility for mental illness patients.

The Kankakee Daily Journal reported the Kankakee City Council this week unanimously voted in favor of a permit for a 10-room, short-term living facility for people finishing treatment.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Beheading sparks new attacks against militants WASHINGTON – The United States launched a new barrage of airstrikes Wednesday against the Islamic State extremist group that beheaded American journalist James Foley and that has seized a swath of territory across Iraq and Syria. President Barack Obama vowed relentless pursuit of the terrorists, and the White House revealed that the U.S. had launched a secret rescue mission inside Syria earlier this summer that failed to rescue Foley and other Americans still being held hostage.

In brief remarks, Obama said the U.S. would “do what we must to protect our people,” but he stopped short of promising to follow the Islamic State in its safe haven within Syria, where officials said Foley had been killed. Later, though, the administration revealed that several dozen special operations troops had been on the ground in Syria briefly in an effort to rescue the hostages, but did not find them.

Holder made the remarks during a visit to the St. Louis suburb that has been wracked by more than a week of unrest since the black 18-year-old was shot and killed by a white officer.

He said he remembered how he was stopped twice on the New Jersey Turnpike and accused of speeding. Police searched his car, going through the trunk and looking under the seats.

“I remember how humiliating that was and how angry I was and the impact it had on me.”

Social media pushes back at militants’ propaganda

By ZEINA KARAM and RAPHAEL SATTER The Associated Press BEIRUT – The extremists of the Islamic State group have turned their social media into a theater of horror, broadcasting a stomach-turning stream of battles, bombings and beheadings to a global audience.

The strategy is aimed at terrorizing opponents at home and winning recruits abroad. But there are increasing signs of pushback – both from companies swiftly censoring objectionable content and users determined not to let it go viral.

Public disgust with the group’s callous propaganda tactics was evident following the group’s posting of the beheading video of American journalist James Foley – chilling footage that spread rapidly when it appeared online late Tuesday.

The slickly edited video begins with scenes of Obama

explaining his decision to order airstrikes in Iraq, before switching to Foley in an orange jumpsuit kneeling in the desert, a black-clad Islamic State fighter by his side.

The fighter who beheads Foley is then seen holding another U.S. journalist, Steven Sotloff, threatening to kill him next. “The life of this American citizen, Obama, depends on your next decision,” he says.

By Wednesday, many social media users were urging each other not to post the video as a form of protest.

Phillip Smyth, a University of Maryland researcher who tracks the social media activity of jihadists, has noted a modest but noteworthy rise in the speed with which rogue accounts are being removed from Twitter and terror-supporting pages are being pulled from Facebook.

“It’s happening,” he said. “I can tell you firsthand because I look at this stuff every day.”

The Islamic State group, an

al-Qaida offshoot, has been a determined user of social media, broadcasting high-definition video of horrific forms of punishment including crucifixions, beheadings, stonings and mass slaughter.

A chilling, 61-minute video posted online in June, shows Islamic State militants knocking on the door of a Sunni police major in the dead of night in Iraq. When he answers, they blindfold and cuff him before they slice off his head with a knife in his bedroom.

The fear created by such footage was seen as one factor behind the stunning collapse of Iraqi security forces when Islamic State fighters overran the cities of Mosul and Tikrit in June.

Faysal Itani, a resident fellow at the Atlantic Council, said the militants’ slick production techniques are partly due to the foreigners who have joined their cause.

“They’re the Twitter generation,” he said. “They’re good at it.”

By IBRAHIM BARZAK and TIA GOLDENBERG The Associated Press GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – Hamas’ shadowy military chief escaped an apparent Israeli assassination attempt that killed his wife and infant son, the militant group said Wednesday as Israel’s prime minister warned that the bombardment of Gaza will continue until rocket fire out of the Palestinian territory stops.

The airstrike on a home where Mohammed Deif’s family members were staying – and the tough talk from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu – came after Tuesday’s collapse of cease-fire talks in Cairo.

In a nationally televised address, Netanyahu showed little willingness to return to the negotiating table after six weeks of war with Hamas.

“We are determined to continue the campaign with all means and as is needed,” he said, his defense minister by his side. “We will not stop until we guarantee full security and quiet for the residents of the south and all citizens of Israel.”

More than 2,000 Palestinians have been killed in the fighting, most of them civilians, according to U.N. and Palestinian medical officials.

Sixty-seven people have died on the Israeli side, all but three of them soldiers.

A six-day temporary truce collapsed into heavy fighting after Egyptian-mediated talks broke down without an agreement on an extended cease-fire.

The house belonged to a family of known Hamas supporters. In footage taken after the strike, rescue workers were seen searching for survivors in the rubble where the building once stood.

Thousands of people attended the funeral for Deif’s family, with a relative carrying the body of his son, shrouded in a white burial cloth.

FERGUSON, Mo. – A white police officer, whose shooting death of an unarmed black 18-year-old ignited racial upheaval in a St. Louis suburb, has been characterized as either an aggressor whose deadly gunfire constituted a daylight execution or a law enforcer wrongly maligned for just doing his job.

An incomplete picture of Texas-born Ferguson officer Darren Wilson has emerged since Aug. 9, when authorities say the white six-year police veteran killed Michael Brown during a confrontation in the predominantly black city where all but three of the 53 police officers are white.

The Brown family’s attorneys have labeled Wilson as a murderer, although the investigation continues and no charges have been filed. The 28-year-old officer has gone underground since the shooting, with relatives contacted by The Associated Press refusing to reveal his whereabouts or discuss the shooting or Wilson’s background.

During a Ferguson City Council meeting in February, Wilson received special recognition from Jackson for what the chief said then was his role in responding to a report of a suspicious vehicle, then struggling with the driver and detaining him for arrest until help arrived. Jackson said the suspect was preparing a large quantity of marijuana for sale.

His proclamation in hand, according a video of the meeting obtained Tuesday by the AP, Wilson returned to his seat with a broad grin.

“He was a gentle, quiet man,” Jackson told reporters last Friday while publicly identifying Wilson, a four-year veteran of the department after spending two policing in nearby Jennings, as the officer who shot Brown, noting that Wilson has no prior disciplinary record. Calling Wilson “distinguished” and “a gentleman,” Jackson added that “he is, he has been, an excellent officer.”

A first step for reining in the NSA A little more than a year after former National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden revealed that the federal government was collecting and storing the telephone records of millions of Americans, Congress is poised to end the program and provide significant protection for a broad range of personal information sought by government investigators.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, has proposed a version of the bill that is significantly more protective of privacy than one passed by the House in May. Like the House bill, Leahy’s proposal would end the NSA’s bulk collection of telephone “metadata” – information about the source, destination and duration of phone calls that investigators can “query” in search of possible connections to foreign terrorism.

But the Senate version, worked out in negotiations with the White House and civil liberties groups, imposes stricter limits on the search terms used to obtain not only phone data but other records as well.

For example, the bill makes it clear that the government may not use a search term that would collect all information relating to a particular service provider or a broad geographic region denoted by a ZIP Code or area code.

Finally, the bill provides for the declassification and publication “to the greatest extent practicable” of opinions by the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court and its appellate arm, the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review.

Important as it is, the Leahy bill addresses in only minor ways the collection of information about Americans as a byproduct of the electronic surveillance targeting foreigners living abroad.

Unlike the collection of telephone metadata, these activities capture the actual contents of phone conversations, emails and social media postings – meaning that if an American is in contact with a friend or relative abroad, his private musings can be swept up in the electronic dragnet. That creates the possibility of “backdoor” surveillance of Americans without the individual warrants required by the Fourth Amendment.

Listening to Pope Francis in Korea the other day, I had some flashbacks to the primetime show.

Pope Francis, who has described the Church as a field hospital, doesn’t even need hardware store items; he bandages wounds with invitations to the Gospel and the sacraments of the Church.

As Christians and other religious minorities are being forced out of Iraq; as tear gas was used on protesters after the death of an unarmed young man in Missouri; as

He said: “The hope held out by the Gospel is the antidote to the spirit of despair that seems to grow like a cancer in societies which are outwardly affluent, yet often experience inner sadness and emptiness. Upon how many of our young has this despair taken its toll! May they, the

young who surround us in these days with their joy and confidence, never be robbed of their hope!”

Again and again, the Pope repeats some variation of what he said in Korea: Do not let yourself be robbed of hope.

For there is theft happening all around us, as the recent news shows: theft of dignity, of our freedoms and even of our lives.

In civilization that has become so secularized – even hostile – to real religious faith, Pope Francis reminds Christians that living their faith in the public square – in every aspect of life – and sharing it is part of their Gospel mandate.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

SKILLED WORKERS ARE AVAILABLE – JUST ASK To the editor: The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) published a study in July claiming that “shortages of labor and subcontractors have become substantially more widespread.”

This assertion came as a shock to the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters and its nearly 40,000 members, who are ready and willing to work right now.

Shortages of qualified tradespeople were unheard of before 2008, when the homebuilding market was flourishing. In 2012, when the housing market began to improve, many residential builders chose to end their partnership with skilled crafts-

men. Instead, they began to use cheaper, lower-skilled subcontractors who can provide cutrate bids because they pay their employees the lowest possible wages with little or no health insurance or other benefits.

The assertion that a shortage of workers is the cause of delays in construction or renovation would be laughable if it was not so offensive. In a desperate attempt to recoup their losses after the 2008 economic downturn, these homebuilders have turned to the less-skilled and less-experienced workers because they can get them for less money. This has not translated into less-expensive homes – but rather, as stock prices show, healthy profits for the homebuilders.

If these groups really want to resolve the issue of slowed construction and renovation, they simply need to renew their partnership with skilled craftsmen, who have the experience and expertise to safely build cost-effective homes in a timely manner.

So when the NAHB cries out for skilled craftsmen, please remind them that members of the Carpenters Union are here, ready to meet the demands of the residential industry and deliver quality homes, on time, every time.

QUINN SHOULD OK BILL ON RIDESHARE PROTECTION To the editor: The Republican Party and gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner recently have been calling on Gov. Pat Quinn to veto landmark consumer protection legislation that will require basic levels of consumer protection for people who use ridesharing companies to provide transportation service.

This legislation was agreed to by both political parties in Springfield, and it received overwhelming bipartisan support in both houses of the Illinois Legislature.

If signed into law, the bill requires very simple consumer-friendly protections such as requiring drivers who work more than 36 hours in a two-week period to have a chauffeur’s license, and for all drivers to carry commercial liability insurance. These are basic protections that most consumers probably already think they have when they get

Warm feelings abound

about Francis, certainly. But what is the Pope saying? His point is that we were created for a life so much better than the one we’re currently living.

Not pain-free, mind you, but one where suffering matters, where it is redemptive.

If a few more of us lived Christian hope, the rest of the world might see the difference and want it for themselves, or at least want people of real religious faith around. Until then, Western culture will become increasingly intolerant of people who want to live their faith in the world.

For the sake of Christians the world over who will live and die for their faith, we ought to work some MacGyver moves of our own, joining Pope Francis in trying to end the highway robbery that we’ve brought upon ourselves, and even acquiesced to.

The highway to heaven is a whole lot better.

Certainly, the major rideshare companies are benefiting from that innovation, as is evidenced by their rapid growth and deep pocketbooks. But where does innovation end and common sense begin?

We think it is common sense that regardless of what kind of car service they use, citizens deserve to have the peace of mind knowing that their driver has passed a comprehensive police background check and drug test, and carries sufficient insurance in case of an accident. They are excited, and their contained exuberance bursts out.

They run, jump and investigate all of the park’s offerings. Blood pumps through their small bodies that shiver with the sheer joy of life. After a while they come close. Unleashed energy has dissipated, and they want rest and a caress from a loving hand.

Children throughout the world are being deprived of these moments that we take for granted.

Present-day conflicts often do not just kill enemy combatants.

The full arsenal of nation states is unleashed on cities with dense civilian populations. Death tolls mount, and women and children become bloodless statistics.

This scenario is widespread and encompasses most of the globe from the Middle East to the Ukraine to the African continent and Southeast Asia.

Does this destruction reflect our aggressive, violent natures?

Or is war the result of a system that creates and perpetuates a psychopathic personality capable of taking human life? History offers some answers to this question. We know the humanity of St. Francis of Assisi, of Mother Teresa, of Martin Luther King Jr. and the inhumanity of Hitler and Stalin.

So, can we conclude that hu-

mankind is capable of sacrifice and empathy for others and also capable of bloody crimes against humanity?

If humankind was nurtured in an environment that emphasized cooperation, empathy, compassion and love, it world reflect these values – and war would become an anachronism. But as long as humankind is nurtured on the militarist code of the warrior, wars will continue.

The war machines of the nation states will not stop the murder of innocent men, women and children who will never have the chance to play at a playground.

A player who will do her job and get kills is the captain outside hitter, Elizabeth Hyland. Although Hyland can win matches with her offensive skills, her biggest attribute is leadership.

PLAINFIELD – A 6-foot2 setter runs into Plainfield Central’s gym after shoving toilet paper up her nose to stop the bleeding.

She steps onto the court and without effort perfectly sets up her front-row players during a scrimmage. Anyone walking into the gym would think the talented athlete is a senior. Yet Ashley Shook just started her sophomore year.

Plainfield Central’s 2013 record, 18-19, does not impress at first glance. However, the record does not show that the 2013 team consisted of six underclassmen. It also does not show that one of the best outside hitters in the area and a top national sophomore setter play on the team.

Shook has not only been regionally recognized as a gifted athlete. The American Volleyball Coaches Association placed her on the Phenom List, and the sophomore earned All-American honors at the 2014 National Championships. Plainfield Central coach Erik Vogt has compared Shook to her sports idol, 2012-13 Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year Lauren Carlini, who plays at Wisconsin.

“Ashley is up there with the best setters I’ve seen while coaching high school,” Vogt said. “She has leadership qualities that can be seen in seniors in her position. There is no setter in the same class at her age level.

She’s the best at her age in the country.”

Vogt then pulled out an assignment he gave the sophomore. He asked her to create serve-receive plays for each rotation. Instead, she filled out both sides of the sheet with different plays for various scenarios. What truly separates Shook from other setters her age is not natural talent. She is a dedicated player, determined to make everyone on the court a better player.

and are willing to follow her lead. The underclassmen want to make this year special for the graduating seniors and end Hyland’s high school career where she started, winning regionals.

“My freshman year, we won regionals,” Hyland said.

“I got a taste of winning something that huge for our program. That motivates me because the players now don’t know what that was like. I would love to end my high school career like that.”

Central lost to Naperville North 27-25 in a close first set of the 2013 regional final.

After competing well with a team that consisted of upperclassmen, the Wildcats realized that they could go far this season. They invested time in their offseason to become better players.

Three times a week, the varsity team woke up at 7 a.m. to condition for an hour.

Hyland admitted that it was hard waking up that early, but the girls set a goal to win the regionals. Aside from conditioning, the Wildcats also improved their skills by playing beach or indoor volleyball.

“During the summer, I would wake up and do conditioning in the morning,” Shook said, “then I would go to Sports Performance to train. Whether it was working on serve receive, setting, setter attacking or timing and tempo with the hitters.

We did that and would play summer league pool play one day a week.”

By training intensely during the summer, the Wildcats have made it possible to contend for the state championship in the future. Their coaching staff, team work ethic and two exceptional leaders have created a new foundation for Central volleyball.

“This year is going to be huge for our program,” Hyland said. “Not only just for varsity – for our program as a whole. I already can see it. Every day the freshmen, sophomores and varsity are getting better.”

STARS coming out Saturday at Grundy SUBMITTED REPORT MORRIS – The D’Arcy GMC STARS National Midget series returns to Grundy County Speedway on Saturday night for the D’Arcy GMC Summer Pavement Nationals presented

by Bell Helmets.

Though the Shoot-Out is only four years old, it has established itself as one of the premier races on the pavement midget racing calendar. The total purse is more than $14,000 with a winner’s share of $3,500.

The race is also Round 2 of the Safety-Kleen Triple Crown, which could net Illinois State Championship feature winner Nick Baran a $2,000 bonus at the end of the season.

Baran, the Plainfield driver who earned his first career STARS Midget victory in the first round of the Safety-Kleen Triple Crown three weeks ago at Grundy, is in a prime position to earn the big payout. If he wins the Pavement Nationals, he would be two-thirds of the way toward earning a $2,000 bonus for winning all of the Triple Crown races.

If Baran does not win this Saturday night’s race, the shift turns to which driver can earn the most points throughout the Triple Crown, which concludes with the Alex Pruett Memorial on Sept. 27. The driver and team who accomplish that feat will earn a $750 bonus.

ment Nationals in 2011,Auburn native and Grundy onelap track record holder in a midget, Mario Clouser, took the checkered flag. The two most recent editions of the race were won by a pair of drivers who have been familiar faces in victory lane this season: Austin Prock and Kyle Hamilton.

Hamilton, the 2012 winner, has run a limited schedule this season, taking part in only four features, but has won two. Prock, who won the most recent Pavement Nationals event in 2013, is coming off yet another win a week ago at Kalamazoo. Prock, who currently leads the STARS point standings, is also batting .500 this

year after winning his fourth race in the eight features.

Hamilton, a student at Purdue University, has shown his prowess at Grundy in recent years, particularly in the 50-lap features. In fact, all five of Hamilton’s midget wins at Grundy have come in 50-lappers.

Along with the STARS National Midgets, the D’Arcy GMC Summer Pavement Nationals presented by Bell Helmets features the STARS Classic Modifieds, INEX Legends, CSR Super Cups, and Legacy Midwest Series. Adult tickets are $12. Kids 5 to 12 get in for $2. Children 4-under are free.

JOLIET – It was a script that the Joliet Slammers have seen all too often this season.

The Slammers again collected enough hits to win a contest but were forced to play from behind the entire evening.

Rockford grabbed a 5-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning and Joliet never could recover as it dropped an 8-4 Frontier League game at Silver Cross Field on Wednesday.

While the Slammers (3152) banged out 10 hits, the Aviators (34-49) finished with 13, with all of those coming during the initial six innings.

Rockford jumped in front for good at 2-0 in the second when Kenny Bryant smacked a two-run homer to right off of starter Ethan Carter.

The Aviators added another pair of runs in the third and one more score in the fourth to grab a decisive 5-0 advantage.

Joliet finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth when Grant DeBruin, who entered the contest ranked second in the Frontier League with a .349 average, doubled and then came home on a single by Russell Moldenhauer.

But Rockford responded with a pair of runs to open up the top of the fifth, which brought Kevin McNorton into the contest.

After getting runners to second and third with no outs in the fifth, the Slammers settled for one run when Seth Granger (2 for 4) got a two-out single to score Josh Scheffert (2 for 4).

The squads traded runs in the sixth inning with Matt Weaver doubling in Moldenhauer, who exited the game with an injury, to make it an 8-3 contest.

Rockford starter Kyle Hassna threw the first 61⁄3 innings, yielding nine hits while striking out five to collect the victory.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Nelson Cruz took the major league lead with his 33rd home run and the surging Baltimore Orioles completed a three-game sweep of the White Sox with a 4-3 win Wednesday night.

Adam Jones and Steve Pearce also homered for the Orioles, who have won four straight and extended their AL East lead to nine games over second-place Toronto.

Baltimore posted its first sweep in Chicago over the Sox since July 1995.

Cruz’s homer was a tworun shot in the fourth off Hector Noesi (7-9) that gave Baltimore a 3-2 lead. Cruz is one ahead of Sox rookie Jose Abreu and Miami’s Giancarlo Stanton for the homer lead.

The Orioles have also hit 161 as a team this year, the most in the majors.

He still has work to do Joliet ex-drug addict isn’t letting cancer stop his foundation work

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – In 2000, when Michael Pinnick faced a 15-year sentence in the Illinois Department of Corrections for drug-related activity, he got down on his knees, told God he was tired of living like a wild animal and begged for help.

Today, Michael, 52, of Joliet, has days where he asks his wife Iris to help him out of bed, fatigued by chemotherapy. But Michael is too busy with his Done with Drugs Foundation to lie around feeling sorry for himself.

His fifth-annual Back to School Fair is Saturday.

Michael credits God for opening the doors to rehabilitation and recovery from substance abuse 14 years ago.

Now that he is battling stage 4 lymphoma and stage 2 lung cancer, Michael isn’t about to give up on the God who hasn’t given up on him.

“My relationship with God is still at a 10,” Michael said. “He’s still using me. He still has work for me to do.

He’s using me to tell of his goodness.”

That goodness is manifested in Michael’s life. Since his recovery, he’s begun the foundation, wrote and self-published a book about his experiences, “Out of the Darkness and Into the Light,” started an annual Christmas party for children living in poverty and – through his foundation – managed two halfway houses in Joliet for women.

In the past, that heart for God and community didn’t exist in Michael.

Sexual abuse from a neighbor when Michael was 5 led to alcohol and marijuana dependence by the time he was 8, Michael said.

“I thought this was the magical cure,” Michael said. “No longer did I think about the abuse, because I was now being controlled by something else.

I was seeking drugs and alcohol to take away the shame and pain and guilt.”

Up until 2000, Michael said he had been to jail 48 times and prison seven times; he also had been shot and stabbed, he added. Although Michael sometimes could stop using for months, he always went back to it, he said.

“I finally got arrested again,” Michael said, “and two police took me from the Will County Jail in handcuffs to my father’s funeral.”

Besides God and spending time in a treatment facility, Michael had another positive force working in his life.

Michael at a Chicago club in 1996.

Although Iris said she liked Michael’s bad boy persona, she liked something more – Michael’s eyes.

These, Iris said, clearly showed another Michael, one he so desperately wanted to let out.

“He didn’t want to be like this,” Iris said. “He wanted to be a regular man.”

Having a woman like Iris in his life was new for Michael.

“What attracted me to her was that she was a good woman, educated, and I didn’t want to lose her, but I was always the one splitting up,” Michael said. “I didn’t want to bring my madness into her life.”

Ironically, Michael took his cancer diagnoses more calmly than did Iris, who was a medical assistant/ precertification agent for Heartland Cardiovascular Center in Joliet. That surprised Michael, since Iris was accustomed to such news because of her work in health care.

“It scared me to see her cry,” he said.

Learning he had cancer meant Michael had to work his way through forgiveness. Many family members have died from cancer, including his brother, Dennis Pinnick, in December 2013. Michael said he was sick with vague symptoms for a year before anyone considered cancer.

But instead of dwelling on what happened, Michael is focused on what is happening: receiving cancer treatments, cheering on other cancer patients through a support group, and being God’s light wherever he goes.

He recalled passing one of Joliet Onoclogy-Hematology Associates’ locations in days past to get a cup of coffee, smiling encouragingly at the patients undergoing treatments and saying, “God loves you. Have a blessed day.”

“Now I’m sitting in those chairs,” Michael said, “and people are coming up to me and telling me to have a blessed day.”

United Methodist of New Lenox announces children’s ministries THE HERALD-NEWS NEW LENOX – The United Methodist Church, at 339 W Haven Ave. in New Lenox, will offer the following children’s ministries for the 201415 school year.

Sunday school begins Sept.

7, with worship at 10 a.m. followed by the all-church picnic at 11:30 a.m. After Sept. 7,

worship services and Sunday school are at 9 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. for preschool through sixth grade. Children attend worship and then go to Sunday School after the children’s message.

Nursery is provided for babies and toddlers. Junior high and high school youth are invited to the Sunday Morning Youth Experience at 9 a.m.

Sunday School sign-up is through Aug. 31.

Additional programs for children will include family game nights, Family Fun Day for Special Needs Children, Bible Sunday for third-graders, Trunk or Treat, Advent and Lenten workshops and Bible studies, Big Sis Little Sis mentoring, Easter Egg hunt, toddler play group, pre-

school, Vacation Bible School and children’s choir and hand bell.

Programs for tweens and teens will include Wildside (games and devotions on Thursday nights for junior high and high school students), youth and bell choir, confirmation for eighth and ninth grade youth, high school girls small group, Great Es-

cape Winter retreat, and summer mission trip.

At the bridge table, if you get pushy in the bidding, you had better take the play seriously to complete the job successfully.

In today’s deal, West leads the heart king against six spades. How should South play?

In this modern auction, North’s fit-showing redouble indicated exactly three-card spade support. South’s threeheart cue-bid was a game-force.

Four hearts was a control-bid (cue-bid), showing first-round control in that suit and expressing slam interest. Four no-trump was Roman Key Card Blackwood, the reply indicating three key cards (here, two aces and the spade king).

South would like to draw trumps and establish dummy’s club suit by cashing the ace and king and ruffing down the queen. However, even if that worked, there would be no immediate dummy entry to get to the last three clubs. Instead, South must hope West has the club queen.

South wins with his heart ace and cashes the spade ace.

But then he must not proceed too quickly. When West drops the 10, declarer must carefully unblock dummy’s nine. Next, South plays a spade to dummy’s queen, finesses his eight on the way back, and draws East’s last trump. Finally, declarer runs the club 10 and makes his contract. He takes five spades, one heart and six clubs.

ADVICE Cousin’s kids push limit of event guest list Dear Abby: I am being married later this year, and I’m planning my guest list. My cousin “Emily” has five young children who I’m making an exception to invite. She lives across the country, so she’s starting to book her plane reservations.

Emily just announced that she’s being remarried and her fiance has three children he shares joint custody of. Am I obligated to invite three children I have never met?

– D.C. in NYC Dear D.C.: Call Cousin Emily. Explain that your guest list is limited and that her five children – to whom you are related – are the exceptions. No other children have been invited to the wedding, and you would prefer to get to know her fiance’s children under less stressful circumstances.

Emily’s wrong to assume she can include anyone whose name wasn’t on her wedding invitation. The children can stay with their mother or grandparents during the time their father will be away.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips Dear Abby: My husband prefers leftovers to sandwiches for his work lunch. He generally takes them in reusable plastic bowls that claim to be dishwasher and microwave safe.

After a short time, these bowls become terribly stained.

Not only are they unsightly, but sometimes they harbor odors.

Even though they have been thoroughly washed, they seem unclean.

I have tried soaking the bowls overnight in dishwashing detergent and even using a small amount of bleach, but the stains remain. Is there a way to remove the stains and odors, or must I continue to buy new bowls and throw the stained ones out? – Bowled Over In Alabama Dear Bowled Over: According to “Haley’s Hints,” by Graham and Rosemary Haley (New

American Library), if you soak the bowls and lids in cold water for five minutes or more before putting the leftovers into them, you can prevent the staining from happening. And the odors can be removed by placing crumpled newspaper inside them and putting the tops on before storing them. (This is also an effective way to deodorize shoes.)

Dear Abby: My daughter just got remarried to a man who has a 10-year-old son. I don’t know the boy at all. What is the appropriate name he should call me?

Palliative care can help patients with incurable disease Dear Doctor K: My mother has advanced cancer and has only a few months to live. How can we help her live out her remaining days with as little pain and as much peace as possible?

Dear Reader: In your mother’s situation, palliative care can help maintain quality of life and lead to a “good death.”

Palliative care focuses on both emotional and physical needs. It makes relief of pain and suffering a top priority. It also provides active support to loved ones and caregivers, including information about how to take care of someone at home.

A recent study conducted by Harvard-affiliated researchers surveyed almost 400 men and women with advanced cancer a few months before they died.

Their caregivers were also asked about the person’s end-of-life experience.

The study found that human connection, rather than heroic life-saving efforts, mattered most to patients and their families.

Though doctors mean well, we

There are other things you can do and advocate for as well.

Patients and families who participated in the study mentioned the following as things they considered important for maintaining good quality of life at the end: • Being at home instead of in the hospital; • Not undergoing chemotherapy or other active treatment; • Having adequate pain relief; • Not having a feeding tube; • Talking with a chaplain or other minister, and spending time in private religious activity; • Having a good relationship with the health care team.

Most, but not all, of my patients want to be entirely in con-

trol of decisions made about their medical care. They want to know what their options are – and the benefits and risks of each option.

They understand that the best we doctors can do is give them estimates. If their condition is incurable, they want an estimate of how much longer they might live with a particular treatment.

And they want to know what symptoms they might suffer both without treatment and from the treatment.

After they get this information, they want to make the decision about what to do. They often discuss this with the family and friends they trust before making their decision.

You could become a hero Dr. Wallace: Last night my older brother became a hero. Our family was celebrating my grandfather’s birthday at a restaurant when a neighboring diner got something stuck in his throat and he couldn’t breathe.

He stood up and tried to gasp for air, but he was unsuccessful.

No one at his table knew what to do, but someone yelled, “Please help! This man can’t breathe!”

My older brother hurried over and used the Heimlich maneuver. After two jerks, a piece of meat flew out of the man’s mouth.

The poor man was weak and very scared, but he was alive with no real damage to him.

His wife was so happy with emotion that she hugged my brother for quite some time.

The owner of the restaurant was also thrilled that the choking victim was saved from a certain death.

Our tab for our family celebration was over $150, and the owner refused to accept payment. That was a very nice gesture.

My brother learned the Heimlich maneuver when he was a paramedic.

Is it possible you could print how to successfully use this method on someone who is choking? Last night my brother taught all of our family members how to do it. We all took turns practicing on one another.

Even my grandparents participated.

The American Red Cross says that before the Heimlich maneuver is applied, you should have the person stand and hang his head.

Then give him four sharp slaps between the shoulder blades.

If this should not clear the breathing lane, use the Heimlich maneuver as follows: Stand behind the choking victim and wrap your arms around his waist. Make a fist with one hand and place it thumb side against his abdomen between the rib cage and the navel. Grasp the fist with your other hand and press with a quick upward thrust.

If this still doesn’t get the job done, do it again and press a little harder.

This really works!

Since I have learned this easy maneuver, I’ve had to use it twice, on a friend at dinner and on a stranger in a restaurant.

Teens, please practice this maneuver on your parents now so you can use it in an emergency. Don’t be overly aggressive as you could break a rib or two.

Practice makes perfect and in this case can save a precious life.

Eva, thanks for your wonderful suggestion.

Everyone should learn how to successfully use the Heimlich maneuver. It doesn’t take long to learn, and it could make you a hero!

By RAE PADILLA FRANCOEUR More Content Now In the fictional essay “The Collapse of Western Civilization: A View from the Future,” authors Naomi Oreskes and Erik M. Conway take us 379 years into the future.

A scholar in the Second People’s Republic of China enumerates the reasons why scientists failed to avert the catastrophic environmental crisis that redrew the world and annihilated millions.

The scholar does not dwell on the scope of the disaster that dates back to 2093.We do learn that rising sea levels overtake some countries, while others, like the United States, reduced in size and resources, regroup with lesser clout and fewer resources. China, we discover, emerges as a world leader.

On the tercentenary anniversary of Western civilization’s demise, the scholar searches for reasons why scientists didn’t act when data gathered, analyzed, published and shared at conferences all but guaranteed the disaster. The scientists, who require at least a 95 percent confidence level in their work, are too reticent in the face of ever-alarming data.

A neoliberal stronghold in Western civilization — particularly the United States and Canada — is also to blame.

Opposed to any governmental involvement in free enterprise, ideologues thwart any centralized attempts to intervene in the degradation of the environment. The absence of an empowered government means that it cannot quickly respond to the growing climate crisis in the same way that China, with its traditionally strong centralized government, can.

everything in the collapse of culture as they know it.

This short read, like “California,” another book I recently reviewed, speculates on a near future that’s imagined from the facts at hand. The authors of “The Collapse of Western Civilization” are historians with strong science backgrounds.

Oreskes is a professor of the history of science at Harvard University and professor of earth and planetary sciences. Conway is a historian of science and technology.

Their book includes a joint interview with Oreskes and Conway, a lexicon of

archaic terms and extensive notes. The book is based on existing science and posits a strong point of view — global warming is real and dangerous; thus, there are those who may find it objectionable.

It will preach to the proverbial choir. Or it may land with a quiet thud. Or it may live on to taunt us with an “I told you so” that falls on defeated ears.
