JOLIET – Joliet is moving ahead with the acquisition of Evergreen Terrace with many questions unanswered.

But officials are unwilling to walk away from the 10-year struggle to take the property from its private owners.

Bowing out now would cost the city $14 million, councilman John Gerl said, adding what the city has paid in legal fees to the $7 million it would likely be ordered to pay to Evergreen Terrace owners if it opted not to move forward.

“We can acquire the property and work through it as difficult as it’s going to be, but I own an asset,” Gerl said at the Tuesday meeting before the council voted to buy.

Otherwise, he said, “I just spent $14 million, and I own nothing.”

The prevailing sentiment was that city ownership was better than leaving the subsidized, low-income housing complex in the hands of private owners despite improvements made since the city began condemnation in 2005.

“In my opinion, if the current management continues to own the property, with time it will revert to what it was before,” said Sara Stovall, co-president of the St. John’s Neighborhood Association, an area that includes Evergreen

Still, some urged the council not to do what it did Tuesday – vote to send in the $15 million check by a Sept. 1 court deadline to buy Evergreen Terrace.

“In my opinion, this is going to turn into another ballpark and waterpark problem,” said resident John Sheridan, referring to two other projects that gradually became questionable ventures by the city – Silver Cross Field and Splash Station Waterpark.

Councilman Larry Hug, the lone opponent in the 7-1 vote to buy Evergreen Terrace, called the housing complex “a financial burden that will only get worse over time.”

“If in fact this passes to-

night,” Hug said ahead of the vote, “I want everyone to know the answer when they ask, why don’t we have more police?

Councilman Terry Morris responded to Hug, saying, “We’ve had $15 million sitting there, and we didn’t get more police, and we didn’t get more trucks.”

Morris took a line from Mayor Bob O’Dekirk’s winning campaign for the April 7 election, when O’Dekirk promised to make Joliet “great again.”

Joliet crossing guards get a raise

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet’s school crossing guards got a raise this week.

The City Council approved higher pay, as well as extra money for guards who cover two crossings, with plans to have more guards doing double-duty in the future.

The raises are the first since 2011, when pay was cut and the city considered outsourcing the work. Instead, Joliet continued to maintain its staff of crossing guards but created a two-tier pay system in which new guards came in at $25.51 a day compared to $48.17 a day for those already on the job at

the time.

However, city officials have said it’s been difficult to keep the guards. Police have been called in to cover corners when there were not enough guards to go around for the school day.

The city now has 36 guards – five short of a full staff.

The council on Tuesday approved a pay increase for the tier two crossing guards to $32 a day for this year. Tier two guards with at least one year of service will get $36 a day in 2016, and those with at least two years of service will get $40 a day in 2017.

Guards who cover two corners will get an extra $12 a day.

City Manager Jim Hock said guards can oversee two

crossings when schools with different start and end times are located near each other.

“We’ve been doubling up, giving people two intersections,” Hock said. “They’re coming out twice a day for not a whole lot of money. If they can spend a little more time out there and make a little more money, it makes it more worth their while.”

If enough guards are willing to take two crossings, the city will reduce the total staff.

The city has determined there are seven areas where one crossing guard can cover two intersections, and plans to reduce the number of guards required for a full staff from 41 to 35.

But as a councilman O’Dekirk had been the most outspoken critic of the city’s pursuit of Evergreen Terrace, saying the city lacked a plan for the project.

Since O’Dekirk took mayoral office, the city has gotten proposals from Holsten Real Estate Development & Management Corp., the city consultant on the project poised to manage the property when Joliet gets it. Those proposals have determined the costs of redevelopment to be anywhere between $11 million to $70 million depending what the city decides.

The city has not decided.

“There is no active plan to tear down Evergreen Terrace.

There is no plan to redevelop Evergreen Terrace,” O’Dekirk said Tuesday. “We don’t have that money. The city’s plan tonight is to buy the property, manage it, and try to make money from the property.”

Internationally recognized speakers share stories of love, loss

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Benjamin Scott Allen remembers dipping his hands in the water off the coast of Northern California as he watched the residual ashes of his two sons – Bryan and Matt – fade into the movement of the waves.

“It was my last act as a father,” Allen said Wednesday night, explaining how in that quiet moment, he embraced grief for what it was: ever-evolving but ever-present.

After the death of his wife – who accidentally received a blood transfusion with HIV during the birth of their first child – and his two sons, Allen said he “followed grief.”

“I learned to follow every emotion. To follow everything, wherever it took me.

If I was angry, I was angry.

If I was sad, I was sad,” Allen said. “And I promised myself to lean into everything and whatever showed up, and that I would not resist.”

Allen was among the featured inspirational speakers who shared stories of loss and love at the inaugural “Night of Hope” event Wednesday night in Joliet. The event, held at the Jacob Henry Mansion, was organized by Sherry Anicich, a Plainfield woman whose daughter and unborn granddaughter were murdered three years ago Wednesday.

Anicich’s daughter, Alisha N. Bromfield, was strangled to death by an ex-boyfriend in August 2012 while attending a wedding in Wisconsin. Bromfield was six months pregnant with a girl she planned to name Ava. The man has since been found guilty and sentenced in her murder.

“After Alisha and Ava died, I was numb. After the numbness wore off, I had so much anger,” Anicich told attendees Wednesday night.

She later realized she wanted to live “a different way in

honor of my daughter,” she said. “That was when I started to see how tragedy can be turned into purpose.”

That’s how Wednesday’s event was born, Anicich said, noting she plans to make it an annual event. It was

sponsored by the Purple Project, a nonprofit she and her husband, Joe, founded and named after her daughter’s favorite color.

More than 20 vendors had counseling and social service resources available for attendees and a candlelight

vigil ended the night, which also included speakers.

Plainfield library appoints new trustee

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The Plainfield Public Library trustees voted to appoint Lisa Schmidt to an open seat on the board Wednesday night.

Schmidt, a Plainfield resident who co-owns a local architecture firm, was sworn in during a regular board meeting after the library board spent more than an hour interviewing and deciding between her and resident Joshua Zumhagen at a closed committee meeting.

“I feel this is a staple in the community,” Schmidt said.

“That’s my reason for [applying for a position on] the board.”

The board also heard updates on project plans to present to the public next spring for a referendum that would help fund an expansion for the library.

Schmidt is no stranger to the library board and its current focus on building a new library.

She has been at board meetings in the past, when her husband, David Schmidt, was a trustee from 2012 to 2013.

The couple, parents of two children, run Plainfield-based Schmidt Architects, a firm that is working on projects like the old trolley barn building downtown.

Schmidt said she hopes her work on projects like the library’s current push for a referendum on next spring’s ballot will give her a valuable insight for the board.

“I’ve reviewed construc-

tion costs and systems,” Schmidt said. “I hope I can become a champion moving forward with planning.”

If the referendum doesn’t pass, Schmidt said she still can contribute to finding more creative ways to alleviate the space issues facing the library.

Library expansion

The board dug deep into a list of 10 questions on a robocall, which would gauge the current public interest in

passing the referendum. The robocall may go out to library district residents as early as Saturday.

They also heard from representatives with architectural firm Nagle Hartray, which the board contracted pre-referendum to design an expansion that fits the increased programming and circulation needs of the library.

The projected floorplans would include a performance space, the administration,

circulation and popular collection on the first floor; children and young adult sections on the second floor; and the reference, adult, fiction and nonfiction areas with a flexible open space on the third floor.

Several rounds of public meetings have advanced and narrowed options for the library expansion. Library Director Julie Milavec said the next round of public meetings will focus on the exterior design of the library.

seems, as people say to me, so unbelievable.”

Since the death of her son, she said she founded the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Foundation, aimed at helping teachers and educators identify students who “fall through the cracks” like Adam Lanza did.

Her book, “Nurturing Healing Love,” is a story about Lewis’ decision to turn personal trag-

edy into something positive.

“I knew that if our killer, our murderer Adam Lanza had had nurturing, healing and love in his own life, that this tragedy would never have happened,” she said.

She told attendees she’s since forgiven Lanza, and that even though “we can’t always choose what happens to us, we can choose how we react.”

Lewis said the day before the shooting, her son, Jesse, had etched the words “I love you,” with his fingernail on her frost-covered car.

Knowing it “was a moment,” Lewis said she ran to get her phone to take a photo of him.

“I have that as my goodbye message. ‘I love you,’ ” she said.

Joliet Township shows interest in Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Township has expressed interest in taking over Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park, which is owned by the city of Joliet.

Township and city officials have met to discuss the park budget, but there is no proposal pending to turn over the park, said City Manager Jim Hock, who has discussed the matter with the City Council.

“The council’s just thinking about it – whether they want to do it,” Hock said. “There’s no movement to making it happen or not making it happen. ... We would need an intergovernmental agreement between the city and the township. [Council members] haven’t asked me to do that yet.”

Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park is one of Joliet’s premier parks, located along the Des Plaines River with a band shell and indoor theater. But the number of events at the park has declined since the city reduced funding amid budget cuts during the recession.

Billie Limacher, president of the park foundation board that raises money to support events, led the creation of the park as part of the nation’s celebration of its bicentennial in 1976.

Hock said township officials have said they would maintain park operations that exist now and seek to expand them.

Word of the township’s interest has gotten around and created concern in the St.

Candace Johnson, co-president of the St. John’s Neighborhood Association, brought the matter to the council Tuesday but did not get any answers.

“I would like to know what the plans are for our Bicentennial Park,” Johnson said Wednesday.

She said Councilwoman Bettye Gavin was expected to discuss the park with the Neighborhood Association when it meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Father Medard Center, 260 Division St. Gavin could not immediately be reached for comment. Joliet Township Supervisor Dan Vera also did not immediately return calls for comment.

But a July 15 memo from Hock to the mayor and council members mentions one meeting with township officials and another with members of the

park foundation board to discuss finances and a possible change in park management.

Hock said Wednesday the township would not necessarily take ownership of the park, and the intergovernmental agreement could be a lease arrangement.

Limacher said Vera has been a supporter of the park and described him as “very progressive.”

“If [the township] have got the money and they want to do it, I would not be opposed,” Limacher said.

Johnson said the future of the park is important to St. John’s Neighborhood residents, who are hoping to find out more about the township’s plans.

“A lot of people in our neighborhood go there to plant flowers and pick up garbage,” she said. “That’s literally our only park.”

Joliet teacher begins second year at Dirksen Junior High JOLIET – Joe Davies warmed up students for the start of a new school year at Dirksen Junior High School with a pop quiz.

It also was the beginning of his second year teaching.

His seventh-grade classroom prepared for the new year Wednesday by jotting down their schedules and listening to him talk about the district’s parent-student supplement – all things that may be dull to them but are important for Dirksen students.

“I will try my very best to entertain you, but then again, my job is to make you learn,” he said.

Wednesday was the first day of class for Joliet Public Schools District 86.

Superintendent Charles Coleman said over the summer new employees were hired, maintenance staff have readied each academic building and everyone is “prepared for students to have a successful year.”

As Davies goes into his second year teaching, he looks forward to honing his instructional skills. Since coming to District 86 as a first-time teacher last year, he’s learned several aspects about what it takes to manage a classroom.

go out and explain that to my kids, ‘Oh, I’m learning on the fly.’ But I do explain to them that’s what they need to do to be successful. You need to expose yourself to as many things as possible.”

During the day, Davies teaches several subjects: math, language arts, science and social studies. He also works with students with learning needs during intervention periods, and coaches wrestling and girls basketball.

When he first started teaching, he said the experience was daunting: When he was training to become an educator, he worked at the elementary school level.

“It was harder for me to know what to say to the kids. … I had to make sure I had that balance of respect and them knowing they can say whatever they need to say,” Davies said.

One of his biggest surprises was how effective it was for him to reach out to students’

parents and former teachers.

Once students knew he had parents on board with their education, they took learning seriously.

Iris Winfrey, who is starting her 14th year as a teacher for Washington Junior High School and Academy, said teaching can be overwhelming.

One of the ways she manages the classroom is to assign student seating based on behavior and need.

“This is not foolproof. You have to try it out in the beginning. There’s been times when I have to think about moving this person or that,” she said.

Davies said he loves Dirksen and received an “unbelievable amount of support” during his first year from colleagues who made sure he wasn’t overwhelmed.

“I think that my experience was vastly improved due to getting involved,” he said.

One of the ways Davies did so was through sports, a passion of his. By becoming a coach, he was able to draw a shy but academically gifted student out of her shell, and help another student who struggled with behavioral issues.

Davies’ advice for teachers entering their first year is to be “very disciplined and be interested.” He’s someone who always has a smile on his face and likes to make teaching fun. But it’s important for students to know he also means business.

“They need to know what you expect early,” he said.

Plainfield trio charged in attempted burglary

OSWEGO – Oswego police arrested four teens, three of whom are from Plainfield, in connection with an attempted forced entry into a home shortly after noon Tuesday on Chapin Way in the Prescott Mill subdivision.

Police have identified the suspects as Kendall R. Parker, 18, of the 13000 block of Kittyhawk Court, Plainfield; Christian A. Echols, 18, of the 21000 block of Inverness Drive, Plainfield; Grantham J. Williams, 19, of the 22000 block of West Odessa Court, Plainfield; and Robert C. Pannell, 18, of the 2000 block of East 71st Street, Chicago.

The Kendall County State’s Attorney’s Office has charged each of the four with attempted residential burglary, a Class 2 felony.

They were transported to the Kendall County jail in Yorkville pending a bond hearing. Additional charges may be forthcoming, according to police.

Trainauskas also is accused of trying to hire another inmate at the Will County jail to kill an assistant state’s attorney, force another person to confess to Timar’s slaying and subsequently kill the confessor.

Man shot in leg while walking on East Side

JOLIET – A 21-year-old man was shot in the leg early Wednesday while walking on the East Side of Joliet.

Shots were reported at 12:16 a.m. in the 1400 block of Fairmont Avenue near the basketball courts, according to Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory.

One round entered the rear window of a residence in the 1400 block of Englewood Avenue but did not injure anyone inside.

At 12:52 a.m., police were called to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox where the man had been brought by a friend for treatment to a gunshot wound to his right calf that was not life-threatening, Gregory said.

The victim told investigators he’d been walking on Englewood Avenue when the shooting started, but became “uncooperative” when questioned, according to Gregory.

JOLIET – Defense lawyers argued Wednesday a judge should not have considered certain testimony when he convicted a Frankfort Township man of a 2009 murder and the man should be granted another trial.

Brian Trainauskas, 40, was found guilty in June of killing Monica Timar after a bench trial before Judge Dave Carlson.

Timar disappeared Jan. 20, Brian 2009, and her Trainauskas body was found three days later in the trunk of her Ford Mustang in the 21000 block of South 78th Avenue in Frankfort Township.

The defense claimed while Trainauskas allowed his friend access to his home, he was not responsible for the despondent woman’s death.

Carlson said after the trial the evidence showed Trainauskas was guilty because Timar’s body was discovered in the trunk of her car and her blood was found in his house and was inside the barrel of a shotgun Trainauskas sold to a friend the day before Timar’s body was uncovered.

Defense attorney George Andrews said Wednesday that Carlson erred in admitting statements Trainauskas made after Timar was reported missing to Gregory Laws, a mutual friend of Trainauskas and Timar. Laws testified Trainauskas told him to stay out of the downstairs bathroom – where evidence technicians later found Timar’s blood. “ ‘Don’t go in there,’ could be an innocuous statement made by the defendant, but we have to consider the context to determine if it’s hearsay that isn’t allowed,” Carlson said.

JOLIET – The Will-Grundy Center for Independent Living is less than two weeks away from its annual fundraising event.

But the nonprofit still is counting on the community to step up and purchase tickets or sponsorships before the big event to help reach this year’s fundraising goal, said Pam Heavens, the center’s executive director.

For $50, guests can partake in dinner, dancing, a silent auction and raffles from 5:30 to 10 p.m. Aug. 29 at Harrah’s Joliet, 151 N. Joliet St., with live music from the Teddy Lee Orchestra.

“Don’t be intimidated by the big band music. [The Teddy Lee Orchestra] plays other music, too,” Heavens said.

“My father is 92, and he’s even brushing off his dancing shoes.”

Meeting or exceeding the group’s $35,000 fundraising goal is vital this year with the backdrop of state budget uncertainty and anticipated local funding reductions from the United Ways of Will and Grundy counties, Heavens said.

The local nonprofit is among the more than 20 advocacy nonprofits statewide run for and by people with disabilities that are celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act this year. The center hopes to highlight the landmark legislation’s successes at the event, which is titled “Empowerment Event 2015.”

The Long-Term Relief Committee, a local group focused on tornado recovery, is cooperating with case management to identify unmet needs in the community and determine the means of distributing the contributions to those in need, according to the release. The committee focuses its efforts in six areas – crisis counseling, volunteer coordination, construction coordination, community assessment, finance and donations, and case management.

Because of the efforts of communities and the aid provision partners who participated with programs such as the Multi-Agency Resource Center, more than $140,000 already has been distributed by agencies to help fill short-term needs.

Separate from the foundation’s assistance fund, agencies such as the Tzu Chi Foundation donated Visa gift cards, and The Salvation Army and Catholic Charities provided victims with cash, rent assistance and car repairs, to name a few, Galiardo said.

Insurance needs to be settled first

Buck said a key issue is in-

surance problems need to be settled before the severity of needs can be determined. It’s not as simple as Diamond in 2013, when everyone received the same amount of money from the donated funds, she said.

Buck said 90 percent of residents affected by the tornado are insured, but it’s not fair to distribute the money to those uninsured. Final decisions will come down to specific needs.

Coal City Village Administrator Matt Fritz said many needs are not identified in the short term so the committee is trying to make sure it doesn’t deplete the fund because some needs don’t present themselves until later.

Fritz said village officials are concerned about residents, as they’ve noticed patience wearing thin while new issues arise that may not always be monetary. Fritz encourages those affected to be mindful of the mental and emotional recovery just as much as the potential of receiving donations.

“We know people are dealing with so many issues,” Fritz said. “It’s a high level of stress when trying to move on while shouldering the burden.”

COAL CITY – Donations continue to come into the Community Foundation of Grundy County relief fund for victims of the June 22 EF3 tornado that struck Coal City, Braidwood and unincorporated Grundy County.

But when and how the $255,000 – and counting – is dispersed still is being considered.

“It’s the first time going through a disaster this size, with fewer resources [than the tornado that struck Diamond in 2013], and the elaborate case management system,” Community Foundation Executive Director Julie Buck said.

The June tornado resulted in four times as much damage as the November 2013 tornado in Diamond, but the fund has accumulated about half the donations the Diamond tornado did, Buck said.

“In the end, we can assure that all money will go out to tornado relief in some form.

We just don’t know how yet,” she said.

A news release issued Monday by the Community Foundation encouraged those affected by the tornado who have not registered for case management services with the American Red Cross or Catholic Charities to do so. Only residents who register will be eligible to draw upon the resources being distributed.

“The main push here is to make sure tornado families are registered so data can be collected,” Buck said. “Everyone needs to be assigned a case manager, even if it’s just to check in or talk things through.”

To date, 366 households have begun their case management file and are registered to be eligible for assistance, Community Foundation Program Director Devan Gagliardo said. More than 800 properties

JOLIET – Police say things didn’t go the way an alleged drug cheat was hoping Tuesday morning.

Juana G. Hernandez, 62, was scheduled to appear at the Will County Courthouse when a probation officer asked her to take a required drug test, according to sheriff’s office spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer.

“When she did, a 4-inch yellow salt shaker filled with a liquid fell into the toilet and she gave statements implicating herself for

She was born on January 29, 1930, in Varna, IL to William and Emma (Guderjan) Hoppe. Lois was united in marriage on April 26, 1952, to William (Bill) Holmstrom. They moved

to Joliet in 1954. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. Her greatest joy was raising and caring for her family. She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

Lois is survived by her husband of 63 years; two daughters, Carol (Dale) Baumgartner and Joyce (Tom) Hurley; and four grandchildren, David and Jonathan Baumgartner; Eric and Jennifer Hurley; and one great-grandson, Finn Baumgartner.

Preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, (Raymond 1952); one grandson, Daniel Baumgartner (1986).

PATRICK A. NORTON Patrick Arthur Norton, age 58, passed away suddenly on August 17, 2015, at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.

He was surrounded by love from his close family and friends through his final moments.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth Aguilar Norton; his mother, Patricia Norton; his sister, Tina Velemir (Keith); his children, Kelly (Matt), Jennifer (Charles), Patrick, Rico, Nicodemus (Samantha), and Matthew; and 13 grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Patrick was a die-hard fan of the Chicago Bears, hard rock music, and NASCAR. He and Ruth spent many Sundays with his mother, Patsy, at her home watching the game or race. He enjoyed cooking out with his son, Patrick, and teaching him all he knew about repairing cars.

Restoration with his wife, Ruth, and dedicated his knowledge and expertise to helping his family and friends in any way. He remodeled daughter, Kelly’s homes with them and they couldn’t have done it without him. He built 3 homes in Ingalls Park, one of which his mother still resides in. He was currently working on remodeling his own home, a work in progress. He and Ruth enjoyed helping to care for daughter, Jennifer’s children, and had developed a special bond with granddaughter, Arriea, and especially grandson, John.

If you knew Patrick, you know how big his heart was and how hard he tried to lend a hand to anyone he could. He always had a running list of people waiting for his help. He worked on their cars, their homes, and their yards. He touched so many people by his selflessness and giving and sacrificed his body for his work. He suffered for many years from chronic back pain and arthritis. Somehow, he managed to work through his pain and still helped complete so many projects, big and small.

He was a loving and devoted husband, son, father, brother, Papa, cousin, uncle, and friend. He was the greatest man who ever lived to many of us, and he will be greatly missed. His love spread like fire through family and friends. It was unwavering and unconditional.

He was never judgmental, always kind. He was a hero to us all and an example to live by.

A Celebration of his life will be held this Sunday, August 23, 2015 at Belmont Athletic Club, in Joliet at 651 Highland Pkwy., beginning at 2:00 p.m. A service will be held followed by story and memory sharing over an early dinner from 3:00 until 5:00 p.m. Per Patrick’s wishes, Cremation rights will be carried out.

By FRAZIER MOORE The Associated Press NEW YORK – Yvonne Craig, who played the sexy, crime-fighting Batgirl in the 1960s TV hit “Batman,” has died. She was 78.

Craig died Monday at her Los Angeles home from complications from breast cancer, her family said.

She began her career as a ballet dancer, the youngest member of The Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, with which she toured for three years.

Her many other TV appearances included “Dobie Gillis,” “Dr. Kildare,” “The Man From U.N.C.L.E.,” “Mod Squad,” “Love, American Style,” “Kojak” and “The Six Million Dollar Man.” In later years, Craig pursued various business ventures, but also did voiceover work, including the role of Grandma in the recent Nickelodeon cartoon series “Olivia.”

Carol’s true passion in life was Art, in it’s many forms and expressions.

Even as a small child, she preferred clay, paper, paints and pencils over dolls. She won several blue ribbons at Will County Fairs, for her paintings while she was still in grade and high school.

While a stay-at-home mom, she discovered a love of ceramics which she pursued for decades. When her husband’s career moved them to Texas, she enrolled at Texas Women’s University to finish her education, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1989, her major being ceramics.

In her sixties, she declared, “I can’t throw clay anymore...it’s too labor intensive!” She changed artistic direction once again, and began making her own glass beads and other jewelry, selling her creations

Joseph Giblin O’Connell aka Joseph Edward O’Connell, former GTE executive, and longtime Southern California resident, passed away, Thursday August 13, 2015, at his home in La Habra, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents, Judge Joseph E. O’Connell and Angela Giblin O’Connell; and his sister, Mary O’Connell O’Malley.

Mr. O’Connell is survived by his longtime companion, Rosalie Pizula; his four children, John Kenneth O’Connell of Fountain Valley, CA, Joan Lineberger of Ventura, CA, Joseph Keven O’Connell of Avondale AZ, and Lindsey Marie Fuller of Philadelphia, PA’ as well as his seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Though her body aged, she never allowed her mind to became old.

Senate overrides Gov. Rauner’s veto of strike bill

SPRINGFIELD – The Senate voted Wednesday to override a half-dozen of Gov. Bruce Rauner vetoes, including a contentious union-related measure Rauner has described as “a war on taxpayers” and the worst legislation he’s ever seen.

A majority Democrats rammed through a 38-15 vote to override Rauner’s veto of a measure that would bar state-employee unions from striking or the government from locking out workers if the two sides can’t agree on a new labor contract.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, which is negotiating a new contract to replace one that expired June 30, has pushed for the measure to give an arbitrator final say if there’s a stalemate. Union leaders said the measure is needed because they believe Rauner is trying to force a strike.

State reports year’s 1st human case of West Nile virus

SPRINGFIELD – Health officials said this year’s first patient with West Nile virus in Illinois is an adolescent girl who lives in St. Clair County.

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported the case Wednesday. Health department Director Nirav Shah said the diagnosis is a good reminder to wear insect repellent and take other precautions.

Health officials also suggest staying indoors between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.

CHICAGO – A former Illinois Department of Human Services caseworker who used to work at the Woodlawn Family Community Resource Center in Chicago is accused of misappropriating more than $300,000 meant for needy families.

Debra Moore, 63, of Baytown, Texas, and formerly of Chicago, is charged with two counts of acting as an organizer of a continuing financial crimes

enterprise, one count of identity theft, one count of wire fraud and two counts of official misconduct. She pleaded not guilty to the felony charges on Tuesday in Cook County court.

Moore is accused of selling Link cards and adding unauthorized benefits to accounts of family and friends in exchange for cash payments. She’s suspected of adding more than $300,000 of unauthorized benefits to ineligible recipients between 2004 and 2013.

Moore has been out on bond and under electronic monitoring. She’s scheduled to return to court next month.

said he is “testing the waters” for setting a goal that the university’s three campuses should increase enrollment to 100,000 students.

“What might it take? We’re definitely going to ask the questions, what would it take, what might the impact be and what are the financial implications,” Killeen told The News-Gazette.

When the new academic year starts next week, total enrollment at the campuses in Chicago, Springfield and Champaign-Urbana will be about 79,000, with 43,500 students at the flagship campus.

Ex-Gov. Blagojevich to ask Supreme Court to hear case

By MICHAEL TARM The Associated Press CHICAGO – A full appellate court indicated Wednesday it will not rehear an appeal of Rod Blagojevich’s corruption convictions, and his lawyer responded that the imprisoned former Illinois governor will appeal next to the U.S. Supreme Court.

After a three-judge panel tossed out five of his 18 convictions in July, the Democrat had hoped the full court might overturn even more.

But the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals posted a notice Wednesday saying not a single judge on the court asked for a rehearing.

Blagojevich, 58, is serving a 14-year prison sentence at a federal prison in Colorado on convictions including his attempt to sell an appointment to President Barack Obama’s old U.S. Senate seat.

An appeal to the high court is a last slim hope for Blagojevich, who proclaimed his innocence for years on talk shows, including NBC’s “The Apprentice” when Donald Trump still presided over the reality show.

There’s no guarantee the Supreme Court would agree even to hear Blagojevich’s appeal. It accepts only about 80 cases a year out of more than 10,000 requests to take up a case, according to court data. It also favors cases that raise unique, weighty issues.

Defense attorney Leonard Goodman, however, suggests that the Supreme Court might agree to a view that 7th Circuit judges did not agree with: In each case of alleged corruption, Blagojevich was participating in legal, run-ofthe-mill politicking.

Allowing all the convictions to stand, Goodman said in a written statement, “puts every public official who must raise campaign funds to stay in office and to be effective at the mercy of an

Blagojevich’s wife, Patti, added in the statement about going to the Supreme Court that “in order for us to see justice, the appeal needs to be taken out of Illinois ... where we can find fairness and impartial justices.”

The Chicago-based appeals court itself grants very few requests for full-court rehearings. And Phil Turner, a former U.S. prosecutor, said he wasn’t surprised it rejected Blagojevich’s request.

“I don’t think other judges on the court wanted to challenge the three judges’ original finding. ... They’re well respected,” he said. “And with Blagojevich, I think many judges just don’t like the guy.”

A central focus of the three-judge panel’s July opinion was the question of when an official crosses the line from legal into illegal political wheeling and dealing.

They found Blagojevich crossed that line when he sought money – often campaign cash – for naming someone to Obama’s old Senate seat. But they said he didn’t cross it by asking for a Cabinet seat for himself.

Secretly trading favors based on politicians’ executive

powers, the panel concluded, is a legitimate way to get things done.

Thus, the appeals panel tossed convictions linked to Blagojevich’s bid for the Cabinet post in exchange for appointing an Obama adviser to the Senate. But it called the evidence on the 13 remaining counts “overwhelming.”

In a modest win for Blagojevich, the panel ordered that he be brought back to Chicago to be resentenced, something that could happen within the next several months. But it also said his original 14-year sentence might be considered fair even after subtracting the five overturned counts.

The U.S. attorney’s office in Chicago hasn’t commented on how the court drew the line between legal and illegal politics. But Jeff Cramer, another former federal prosecutor, believes the government attorneys can’t be happy about it. While they could even appeal to the Supreme Court themselves on that narrow issue, he doesn’t think they will.

“The only thing worse for them than the 7th Circuit saying a favor for a favor is not political corruption – is for the Supreme Court to say they agree with it,” he said.

Help with affording college College is expensive. Getting all your academic ducks in a row for college is exhausting.

So anything that can be done to make college more affordable and alleviate headaches that arise in the process of enrolling is welcomed.

A new law signed by Gov. Bruce Rauner last week does just that. It requires public universities and colleges to give college credit to students who receive scores of 3 or better on a 5-point scale on College Board Advanced Placement exams.

Current score acceptance policies vary by school and, in some cases, department. For example, a student applying to McHenry County College would need to score a 4 or higher on the AP exam to receive credit in political science, but would need only a 3 or higher to receive credit for the same subject at Northern Illinois University.

Knowing whether a qualifying AP

test score will receive credit regardless of Illinois college helps put a student’s mind at ease during the stressful time of selecting a college and wondering whether test scores will transfer.

It also helps students save money.

Having to take fewer credit hours in college means having to spend fewer dollars to get a diploma.

Students who excel in AP classes are prepared for college. Allowing an AP class taken in high school to take the place of an introductory course in college does not lessen a college education or make it less challenging to graduate from college.

As long as AP classes are challenging, educational and preparing high school students for college, they should be allowed to count in college.

Easing financial and academic stress is worthwhile. We applaud state lawmakers on adopting this policy regarding AP classes.

William Buckley understood the importance of civility Sometimes we only pay attention when there’s a storm.

I thought this as I saw headline after headline commenting on a new film involving a famous televised argument between William F. Buckley Jr. and Gore Vidal. As the New York Times describes it, the film, “Best of Enemies,” describes the end of civility in public debate and the beginning of the slide into partisan rancor that marks today’s discourse.

I submit that Vidal and Buckley didn’t start the fire; the tumult and violence of our times fed the desire to turn politics into blood sport.

When we only pay attention to storms, we miss the bounty of the everyday. I say this specifically in connection here with Buckley, founder of National Review, the magazine I’ve worked for since a Clinton was president. When Buckley

died, YouTube videos of Buckley and Vidal going at it gained plenty of hits. And that made me sad. It missed the point of who Buckley was and what he did.

In the days surrounding his death in 2008, the National Review staff was overwhelmed by emails from people who wanted to testify to how important he was in their lives.

In 1969, when asked about Satan, he said: “I think of him as the person we ought mostly to consider as being in charge of this world. I don’t know how better to understand Christ’s being taken to the mountaintop and offered the kingdoms of this Earth than to assume that it was Satan’s to offer. I do think of Satan as being an expression for worldliness.

When we say that Satan roams through the world seeking the destruction of souls, I understand that to mean that

Reading this, I couldn’t help but think what Buckley might be writing these days about Pope Francis, who consistently points to the reality of evil and the necessity of a well-ordered society in order to combat it.

The pope speaks clearly and substantively about gender theory, marriage and creation. And people are paying attention. Could it be that this attention is born out of a desire for the world to make some sense again? The church of Pope Francis very much

resembles the church as Buckley described it in the book “Nearer My God,” his spiritual autobiography. He wrote: “(T) he Church is unique in that it is governed by a vision that has not changed in two thousand years. It tells us, in just about as many words, that we are not accidental biological accretions, we are creatures of a divine plan; that the God who made us undertook to demonstrate his devotion to us as individual human beings by submitting to the pain and humiliation of the Cross.

Nothing in that vision has ever changed, nothing at all, and this is for all Christians a mind-shaking, for some a mind-altering certitude, with which Christians live, in our earnest if pitiable efforts to clear the way for a love that cannot be requited.”

This points to a much fuller portrait of who Buckley was

as a man and intellectual in American life. One who was humble, grateful and, yes, exceedingly civil, so often bringing people together.

At a day when religious freedom is threatened throughout the world, one of Buckley’s most searing lines may have been, “Without freedom, there is no true humanity.” So it is true that without people exercising that freedom to give glory and praise to the Creator in their daily lives in the public square, no truly pluralistic society is possible. Mercifully, Buckley left us much to reflect upon and ponder. His wisdom won’t be forgotten but will continue to speak and reveal its riches.

All-Star Game in Cincinnati, where Rose, Joe Morgan, Johnny Bench and Barry Larkin were honored as the four greatest Reds of all time.

“Morgan and Bench said something about ‘Rob,’ and I said, ‘Did you just call him Rob?’ So Bench says, ‘Yeah, but you have to call him Mr. Commissioner.’ That was funny.”

Slammers score some runs in Rose’s visit

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – There was no better way to highlight a visit by the all-time Major League Baseball hits leader than slapping the ball around the ballpark a little bit.

That’s just what the Joliet Slammers did Wednesday at Silver Cross Field on a night where Pete Rose coached on the bases, greeted fans and signed autographs.

With Rose watching from

first in the opening frame, the Slammers scored a pair of runs to move in front early in their Frontier League contest with Florence.

The Slammers used a productive fifth inning to take control and went on to capture a 10-4 victory to kick off a series whose opener had been washed out the night before.

Things started off well for the Slammers (33-46) as Carter Bell’s deep fly to right went off the right fielder’s glove and

over the short fence to open the bottom of the first.

Although Rose twirled his finger as if to signal a home run had been hit, official scorer Dave Laketa handed out an error on the play.

Joliet added another run in that frame when Jeremy Nowak singled in Nate Roberts.

Florence (36-43) got a run back in the fourth, but Joliet broke things open with a sixrun fifth.

Alfredo Rodriguez singled

in Casey Fletcher and Bell, Mike Garza drove in Rodriguez with a single ,and Marc Flores smacked a home run to bring home Joe Staley and Garza.

After the Freedom scored another run in the top of the sixth, Rose joined Mark Vasko on Slammervision for some baseball talk.

Slammers starter Spencer Medick allowed four hits and one run while striking out four in five innings. The left-hander entered the contest with an 0-2

mark and a 5.19 ERA. Dan Tobik pitched the sixth, then Kevin McNorton allowed two hits but no runs during his two innings of work.

In the seventh, Nowak belted a home run to bring in Staley to make it a 10-2 contest.

Tuesday’s storm-induced cancellation will mean a pair of seven-inning games beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday to close the brief homestand.

Then the Slammers travel to Lake Erie for a weekend series.

“You know, it would be great for baseball if the Cubs won this year,” Rose said. “It wouldn’t be great for Cincinnati because they’re in the same division, but [Reds] aren’t going anywhere, anyway.”

Perhaps because of Joliet’s proximity to Chicago, Rose began by recalling the Cubs of his era.

“I always looked at Chicago as a six-hit town if we had a three-game series,” he said.

“And if it was a good series, it was seven or eight hits. They had no pitching. Rick Reuschel and Fergie [Ferguson Jenkins] were good, but you could get hits off them.

“There aren’t too many teams that ever had four Hall of Famers and never got to the World Series. They had [Ernie] Banks, [Billy] Williams, [Ron] Santo and Jenkins. I don’t know what the problem was.”

Day baseball, perhaps? In those days, Wrigley Field did not have lights. Rose, however, does not believe his career would have played out differently had he played with the Cubs.

“I liked day games because you can see the ball good,” Rose

A switch-hitter since age 9 – he prefers switch-batter – Rose finished his career with 4,256 hits. He laughed that he also made 9,900 outs. But for all his records, the one he is most proud of is playing in 1,972 winning games.

“Do you have fun when you lose?” Rose asked. “Let the other guy lose. If winning didn’t matter, they wouldn’t put the score on the board out there. I was in six World Series in 24 years. I wasted 18 years.”

Whatever Rose achieved in the game, he earned. That’s why he was admired to the nth degree.

“I guarantee you that 90 percent of the guys in your [Slammers] clubhouse have more talent than I had at 20 or 21 years old,” he said. “But I had all the other intangibles. I had a winning, positive attitude.”

By KAITLYN JASNICA PLAINFIELD – A common volleyball misconception is that blocking is a dominant part of a middle’s game only on the guys’ side.

According to some, girls volleyball focuses on skill and ball control and not the more physical aspects of the game.

Plainfield South’s Deyshia Lofton shatters that stereotype.

The 6-foot-3 middle blocks better than many guys, in fact.

She set South’s season blocking record with 139 blocks, a substantial number larger than any other middle blocker in the area.

“In my opinion, that makes her one of the best middles because she knows how to find a ball,” South coach Amanda O’Boyle said. “She can read a ball like no other. Sometimes, she will come out of nowhere, and I’ll think, ‘Where were you?’ and she gets there. To watch her be something different and be universal, there’s nothing more you can say.

“When you see her put a ball down you think, ‘Oh, my God.’ Whenever she’s in the front, I don’t get nervous. I don’t get scared. I know that we’re good.”

Time will tell if Lofton will break her own season blocks record, but this season for the Cougars already looks bright because she had a big club season.

After moving to Sports Performance Volleyball Club, she made the 18 Elite team as a junior and won a national championship, trained with the Chinese National Team for a month and learned a little Mandarine on the side.

Playing on the SPVB team has benefited the Cougars in major ways.

One was Lofton’s improved play.

“I’ve seen major improvements,” she said. “To be honest, it was a complete change.

It’s like day and night. My hitting has gotten much better, my blocking, my timing.

It helped me out a lot. I know more than I did last year now.”

She learned from not only her coaches, but also her team-

mates in many ways.

Lofton played with Molly Haggerty, the 2015 Illinois Gatorade Volleyball Player of the Year.

Although club season had just ended, Haggerty was the type of person who expected a lot from her teammates and led by example. Before her feature interview, Lofton got a text about 8 a.m. letting her know that Haggerty would be at the gym lifting, and that Lofton could join.

As early as summer league, the Indiana University-bound senior started showing that type of leadership for her team.

She leads vocally by telling the team what it needs to do to succeed, but she also leads by her play – whether it’s helping a weaker blocker cover an area or putting a ball away for game point.

“I started coaching here three years ago, and watching Deyshia grow as a player and as a person, her character, ev-

erything, it’s been a 180 over the years,” O’Boyle said. “It’s really cool to see. Watching her step up as a leader this year is awesome to see.

“Even the girls are responding to her differently. They’re looking for her when we’re doing something wrong or we need something. They always try to go to her. Watching that dynamic change is pretty cool, especially since we lost two of our leaders last year since they graduated.”

Lofton grew in skill and leadership by playing with all her teammates. There is one thing, however, she has learned from two specifically that can help her team.

Lofton played with two Herald-News All-Area volleyball players in Plainfield North’s Allie Lindroth and Plainfield Central’s Ashley Shook.

“I know people who were playing on Sports Performance previously in our conference, and they were the headliners,” Lofton said. “They were the biggest players on the team. I think that it [playing at SPVB] will spice up the game a little more.”

Lofton knew how good some

area opponents were because she competed against them in club and in high school. But because she was a teammate of two top area players in club, she now knows their tendencies, which will make it easier for the Cougars to defend.

Last year, South had a goal of having more than two wins, and it ended its season with a 13-16 record. In one season, the Cougars improved their record from two wins to 13 and reached the regional championship match.

South making a huge turnaround is an understatement.

This season, the team’s goal is to play hard because the Cougars know they’re heading in the right direction.

This season, they want to hang in with the historically more successful Plainfield schools. Now that the team got over the hump, it just needs confidence it can hang with North and Central.

“I just want to play our hardest,” Lofton said. “I don’t want to go in and say, ‘We’re playing [Plainfield] North.

We’re going to get killed by Allie Lindroth.’ I’m just going to play [all] out.”

VIEWS Curt Herron I was going to reflect on my time reporting on Bill Zimmer’s Lockport football teams, but then I got responses from two gentlemen who were deeply influenced by their association with the hall of fame coach who passed away last week at age 84.

So I’ll step aside and share their comments, which I think best reflect the character of the man who was integral in transforming Lockport from being a small school with occasional good teams to one of the state’s best athletic programs by the end of his career.

Terry Ziemke shared a letter that he sent to Bill’s wife, Ann, and the rest of the Zimmer family. He talked about how he, Rudy Fernandez and Jim Hall were young teachers and newlyweds who got their introduction to coaching under Zimmer. Here are some excerpts: “What we learned in those early years and the time we spent as Lockport High School football coaches really tempered our character and souls and helped us to develop as men,” Ziemke said. “We learned how to be football coaches working with Bill Zimmer.

“We learned that anything you do or make is dependent on the little things that you do on a daily basis. We learned to out-work our competitors.

It takes time to be good at anything. Time spent studying or researching; time spent preparing; time spent teaching; and time spent evaluating. And, most importantly, it takes time developing relationships with people.

“In the long run, Bill cared about us as people. He wanted us to be successful coaches. He knew what that took. And, in spite of his demanding expectations of his staff, he wanted us to be good husbands and fathers. It might have taken our wives a few years to understand, but, once we all had our own kids, his love for us was much more apparent.”

lesson they picked up was how to deal with kids.

“We also learned that our relationships with the kids we taught/coached was paramount to anything that we did,” Ziemke said. “Bill taught us to gear everything we did to something beneficial for our players. Strength training, conditioning, motivation, recruiting, all was done to better prepare our kids for the future, ours and theirs. And Bill would let us all help in any of these phases of the program giving us some ownership in our success.

“All of us still have longterm relationships with many of the players we coached because we cared about them.

That was a Bill characteristic and trait that we were fortunate enough to learn working with Bill. For Rudy, Jim and I, we learned how to be parents working with Bill, Jerry Fornoff and Jim Story, and we practiced for many years with our players before we had our own kids. I could write a thesis about how Bill Zimmer influenced my life in a positive way.”

“I always thought of Coach Zimmer fondly over the years,” Ferry said. “There is an old saying, ‘We do not remember days, we remember moments.’ Bill Zimmer etched so many moments in my mind that I often reflect upon and will never forget.

“In the spring of my eighth grade year (1967) at Reed School, Coach Zimmer came to talk to us about playing football for Lockport High School. There he was, standing at the door of the classroom where I was about to hear my first motivational talk, which did its magic to motivate me to play for this man someday. Coach Zimmer was great for kids of my generation as he was an effective disciplinarian that got results.

“After I had a terrible first-half performance at

quarterback my senior year playing Joliet Central (fall 1970), Coach Zimmer wasted no time getting inside my face mask immediately. Let’s just say I got the message. Enough so that my second-half performance earned me the Joliet Herald player of the week.

“Coach Zimmer was a great trainer, as well. I recall several postgame trips to the emergency room with Coach Zimmer. He treated and tended to all of my injuries during weekly preparation for the next game, I never missed playing a down my senior year thanks to Coach Zimmer.

“Two other never forget moments were phone calls from Coach Zimmer telling me I was selected as an All-State quarterback after my senior year in 1970 and another call in 1976 telling me I was hired as an industrial arts teacher and football coach at Lockport High School. We

will never know on this side of eternity what effect we had on the lives of others. Coach Zimmer now knows all the lives he touched fighting the ‘Good Fight’ during his time on this Earth.”

After his Hall of Fame coaching career, in which he was honored in both football and wrestling, he and Ann retired to Florida. Several years back, I wondered if some people in Lockport had kind of forgotten about Zim, but after his passing, it’s quite clear his legacy still looms quite large.

I covered most of Zim’s last teams at Lockport, and they had their struggles. But you learn a great deal about a coach during those tough times, and my respect for him only grew.

I’ll always remember the last time I talked to Zim, right after son, Mike, was named as head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. Even though he was battling health issues, you could hear the pride in his voice over the accomplishment. It was, indeed, the culmination of a remarkable career of a man who had done so much for so many athletes from Lockport.

That onslaught left opponent Hank Lebioda gasping for air. He matched Cooke’s birdie on the fourth, dropping

his shot 6 inches from the cup; but otherwise, Lebioda, from Winter Springs, Fla., was no match, with Cooke scoring a 3 and 2 victory to advance to Thursday’s round of 32.

“It was a good start,” said the Bolingbrook native and Illinois Open champion.

But he didn’t change his game plan.

“I just try to take every hole for what it is, play every hole the best I can. Strategy, I didn’t feel I changed anything, given the situation.”

Cooke will play David Oraee – who was second in stroke play –Thursday morning. If he wins that, he will

play in the afternoon’s Sweet 16 round.

“If I play well, I play well, and if they play better, well, I can only control myself,” Cooke said.

Playing in the equivalent of 2-under for 16 holes, Cooke never led by less than 2 up after his first six holes, and he stayed 3 up after a par on 11 put him at that level. It was the match play version of a walk in the park.

“I wanted to hit the green, give myself good birdie chances, and make him make the birdies,” Cooke said.

The tee shots on the fourth were spectacular. Cooke’s shot

hit a slope to the back right and trickled back to about 14 inches – modestly, he thought about two feet. Then Lebioda stepped up and smacked his shot to within a half-foot of falling in for an ace.

“That was pretty cool, having two shots inside two feet and going ‘good-good,’” Cooke said.

“We couldn’t see from the tee, but did when we walked over the slope and seeing both balls in there was pretty cool.”

This is Cooke’s second USGA start. He played in last year’s U.S. Public Links Championship, and failed to get to match play.

Offense struggles at joint practice with Colts

By ARTHUR ARKUSH aarkush@chicagofootball.com INDIANAPOLIS – After concluding the first of two joint practices with the Colts, John Fox seemed pleased with the level of competition and opportunity for his Bears to battle different players and schemes.

“We played them a year ago and lost to them in the playoffs,” said Fox. “I pretty much know their roster and what they’re capable of. … You have different styles of offense and defense and that’s good practice for your team. I thought it was a productive day.”

Fox said his offense received “great work” against a “quicker, faster style of de-

fense,” but Jay Cutler wasn’t as satisfied.

“I thought they got after us, they won the day,” said Cutler of the NFL’s 19th-ranked scoring defense in 2014. “We’ve got to fix a lot of things.”

Part of the offense’s struggles surely resulted from its shaky WR depth with Alshon Jeffery (calf) and Kevin White (shin) sidelined. But opportunity abounds for Marquess Wilson, whose versatility impresses Cutler.

Now, Cutler said, Wilson “needs to take the next step.”

Forte admires Gore: Dating back to his rookie season in 2008, Matt Forte has trained in the same offseason location as Colts running back Frank Gore. Forte and Gore posed for

a photo after practice – a sign of respect, according to Forte.

“I always follow the running backs that I know and obviously that I’m a fan of around the league,” he said.

“But me and Frank go way back. … So it was a no-brainer that I would come and get a photo with him and show him some love.”

Forte, 29, is entering a contract year and hopes to capitalize on another lucrative deal in Chicago or elsewhere. Though he praised the longevity of the 32-year-old Gore – the rare exception in today’s NFL after signing a three-year pact this offseason – Forte isn’t concerned about approaching an ominous age for backs.

“I don’t worry about what they say about running backs and turning 30 … I just continue to work hard, which[Gore] has done his whole career, too,” said Forte.

Amos’ opportunity: After being elevated to first-string safety on the Bears’ second unofficial offseason depth chart, rookie Adrian Amos has a big opportunity Saturday against Andrew Luck and the Colts.

“We put a little more stock in games and we’re excited to see him play and I’m sure he’s excited to play,” said Fox. From Julius Peppers to Von Miller, Fox has entrusted rookie starters before. Those were second overall picks, but other rookies, Fox said, have also flourished.

Four decades of sharing God’s love Lemont church volunteers produce quilts for Lutheran World Relief

LEMONT – When Carol Reeves retired in June, she joined her mother, Dolores Gutowski, 78, of Lemont at a weekly quilting ministry, in which Gutowski has participated for more than 20 years.

Reeves, 55, of Lemont, said she enjoys crafts and now helps assemble blankets that go to people who have lost everything.

“Each one is unique,” Reeves said of the quilts.

“They are just beautiful.”

For 40 years, the women at Bethany Lutheran Church in Lemont have made and sent quilts to Lutheran World Relief. The organization then disperses them where needed, said MariLynn Bergmark, 79, of Lemont, the group’s unofficial leader.

Each Tuesday, three to a dozen women – most of them retired and a few in their 90s – meet at the church to cut, stitch, stuff and tie the quilts. Their labors yield 70 to 90 quilts a year, which then are brought into the church in October or November for a blessing before being shipped, Bergmark said.

Pastor Elaina Salmon said the women perform a valuable service. She noted that when an earthquake hit Napal earlier this year, Lutheran World Relief distributed about 900,000 quilts.

At Bethany, most materials that comprise the quilts are repurposed. Salmon said the women are dedicated and should be proud of their hard work.

“I love how our ladies can put to use and reuse so many things to bring comfort to someone,” Salmon said. “I love even the good stewardship of the Earth’s resources and the connection to people around the world.”

Glenn, became pastor. Glenn retired in 2004. Bergmark, who sewed doll clothes as a child and her own clothes as an adult, joined the group to support him. She did most of her quilting in the summer when she was not teaching, Bergmark said.

The ministry is personally satisfying to Bergmark, and she enjoys introducing the women to new quilt ideas and tools, as well as easier methods. Perhaps the most surprising part of this ministry is that one does not need sewing or quilting skills to participate, especially because traditional quilting method are not used.

“These are utility quilts,” Bergmark said.

Marlene Ahlberg of Lemont, also an occasional volunteer until her retirement in 2007, said she can’t “sew a stitch.” But she can organize and cut fabric, lay out patterns, and even set up chairs for the workers and serve lunch. Ahlberg said she does it for love of God. “We’re supposed to help each other,” she added.

To make the quilts, volunteers cut 10½-inch squares with rotary cutters, assemble and then stitch the patterns. They then layer the quilt’s back, the batting, and the top. Finally, the volunteers tie all three layers together with yarn.

“Hopefully, they come to us clean,” Bergmark said. “If there are stains, we cut around them.”

Monetary donations are needed for shipping, about $2.25 a quilt, Bergmark said, which quickly adds up when the ministry ships 92 quilts, as it did last year. When donations of material or money are insufficient, the ministry covers the cost, Bergmark added.

Norma Johnson, 94 of Lemont, who has been helping make quilts at Bethany Lutheran Church in Lemont for 30 years, works Aug. 11 to pin squares together before sewing them together.

AP poll: Minority of U.S. Catholics know Pope Francis’ climate views The ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK – A new survey has found fewer than half of U.S. Roman Catholics said they knew of Pope Francis’ bombshell encyclical on curbing climate change – and only a fraction of those heard about it from the pulpit – in the month after he released the document with an unprecedented call for the church to take up his message.

Forty percent of American Catholics and 31 percent of all adults said they were aware of the encyclical, according to the poll by The Associated PressNORC Center for Public Affairs Research and Yale University.

Among Catholics who knew about the document, just 23 percent said they heard about it at Mass.

The survey, conducted July 1719, provides an early measure of the impact of the encyclical in the

U.S., where Francis is expected to press his teaching on the environment in his first visit to the country next month.

The U.S. is home to some of the staunchest objectors to mainstream science on climate change and to government intervention aimed at easing global warming, along with a segment of Catholics who think the pope should be talking far more about marriage and abortion than the environment.

In the encyclical, released June 18, Francis called global warming a largely manmade problem driven by overconsumption, a “structurally perverse” world economic system and an unfettered pursuit of profit that exploited the poor and risked turning the Earth into an “immense pile of filth.” He urged people of all faiths and no faith to save God’s creation for future generations.

At the bridge table, do not assume your opponent is crazy.

This deal occurred during a social game in which South was the strongest player.

After South opened two clubs, and West overcalled two spades, North wanted to make a penalty double.

But system dictated that he bid two no-trump to show three “controls,” either three kings or an ace and a king.

After three natural bids, North control-bid (cue-bid) four spades to show that ace and a hand suitable for play in diamonds.

He realized that his singleton king was at least as valuable as two low cards – and here the diamond king was much more valuable than the spade king would have been.

Then West, who did not like the sound of the auction, crazily doubled.

South, knowing what he was doing, happily redoubled.

West considered leading the club ace, hoping his partner had a singleton, but decided NorthSouth would have mentioned the suit with a nine-card fit. So West led the spade king.

The declarer ruffed in his hand, played a diamond to dummy’s king, ruffed another spade, drew trumps, and led his club king.

West won, but South had the rest.

He claimed 1,930 points, including 100 points for honors.

There are several types of yoga. The most popular form practiced in the United States is hatha yoga.

It is built around a series of yoga postures, called asanas. Yoga sessions typically last from 45 to 90 minutes. But you can also get some benefit from shorter sessions, done a few times a week.

A session generally begins with breathing exercises that relax the body and help free the mind of worries and distractions.

Breathing deeply through the nose is a vital component of yoga. The session then proceeds through a series of seated, standing and prone asanas. You may be instructed to hold each asana for a few seconds to minutes.

But you should never push your body further than it wishes to go. And you should stop if you feel any pain. Yoga sessions typically end with meditation.

Yoga postures can be modified to accommodate your strength and experience. People with medical conditions that make doing exercises on the floor (traditional for yoga) difficult or impossible can do yoga on a chair, instead. Be sure to tell your instructor about any limiting health problems. He or she can warn you against certain positions that may aggravate your pain and help you modify the poses to prevent injury.

So there are many reasons for you to try yoga.

Some of my patients with chronic pain (and other medical conditions) find that it helps them greatly.

Dear Dr. K: I’ve heard that yoga can help relieve chronic pain. What types of pain can yoga help?

Dear Reader: People have been practicing yoga for thousands of years. This mind-body exercise combines breath control, meditation and movements to stretch and strengthen muscles. But yoga places as great an emphasis on mental fitness as on physical fitness.

Research finds that yoga may help relieve pain in people with a variety of chronic pain conditions, including arthritis, fibromyalgia, migraine headaches and low back pain.

A study published in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine looked at 313 patients with chronic low back pain.

The researchers found that a weekly yoga class increased mobility more than standard medical care for the condition.

People with carpal tunnel syndrome may also benefit from yoga. In 2003, the Cochrane Collaboration published a review of 21 studies. (This international group of health authorities evaluates randomized clinical trials.) They concluded that yoga significantly reduced pain in people with the syndrome.

Other studies have found that yoga may help increase strength and flexibility. The evidence is less strong that yoga improves physical fitness or balance, but there is some suggestion that it does. Yoga may improve what are called the “executive function” aspects of thinking. There is strong evidence that yoga reduces stress and anxiety.

Interestingly, yoga appears to calm inflammation in the body and boost the immune system, as measured by the immune response to immunizations for viral diseases. It also appears to modestly lower blood pressure, though not to a greater

Dear Abby: In my family alone, three young women have – by their own admission – gotten pregnant on purpose to get their boyfriends to marry and support them.

None of these marriages worked out. The horrible relationships were and still are hurtful and damaging, not only to the children, but also to the rest of the family. I’m aware of several other women who have admitted to entrapping their baby daddy by “forgetting to take their pills,” so I know this isn’t just happening in my family.

Contraceptive measures for boys are limited and fallible, and I am concerned.

My nephews’ mother entrapped their now-absent father, so I doubt she’ll mention this to them.
