The Mar Theatre – Wilmington Movies were a new form of entertainment for leisure-hungry Americans in the early 20th century.

As the average hours worked each week decreased for many, their wages rose and many people sought new ways to spend their time and money.

In cities and small towns, there were a wide range of recreational activities available to a public looking for entertainment opportunities: dance halls, billiard parlors, amusement parks, vaudeville performances and professional sports. As fun as these activities were, nothing was more popular or widespread as the movies.

From the first freestanding nickelodeon store-fronts that began the process of showing projected motion pictures to small groups, to the larger cathedral movie houses, millions of Americans embraced the art of movie-making in the early years.

For the movie fans during the Studio Era, the more than 17,000 movie theaters in operation across America during the 1940s represented their own diversity of screen experiences. These venues ranged from small town theaters with the capacity of only a few hundred patrons, to the nearly 6,000 seats at the Roxy Theatre in New York City.

The single-screen movie theaters that punctuated small-town America’s main streets and city neighborhoods since the 1930s are all but gone. In many American towns for most of the 20th century, movie theaters were

located near the heart of the commercial, civic and social life.

For most Americans, movie-going was linked to the experience of going to town for a night out. This might mean a short trip to town once a week, or for some, it might have meant a long trek a couple of times a year.

State officials require new meningitis vaccination

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A new immunization requirement for students this year could save their lives should they contract a bacterial meningitis infection, said a Will County health expert.

Beginning this fall, students entering grades six and 12 must show proof of receiving a meningococcal conjugate vaccination. State education officials said sixth-grade students must show proof of one dose of MCV4 while 12th-graders must show proof of two doses, unless they received their first dose after age 16.

If adolescents ages up to 18 or 19 years old don’t receive the vaccination and they contract bacterial meningitis, they could be many times more likely to die than someone who did, said Howard Ehrman, Will County Community Health Center chief medical officer.

Immunization is important to reducing outbreaks, epidemics or pandemics of diseases, he said. In the past 40 to 45 years, herd immunity – when a critical portion of a population is immunized against a contagious disease – has proven to be effective against those cases, he said.

“It’s not a question whether there will be more outbreaks or epidemics, … it’s basically a question of when it’s going to happen or where it’s going to happen,” Ehrman said.

As school begins for students in Will and Grundy counties, state health officials are reminding parents and guardians of immunization requirements, including new ones in place for this year.

One new state law signed Aug. 3 requires parents who cite religious beliefs as a reason for exemption from immunization requirements to complete a form that will be signed by a health care provider. That signature will indicate a parent has been informed about the risks of forgoing vaccination,

“This is certainly helpful to the local school district [because it shows a health care provider] has counseled and advised a parent about what this could mean to not vaccinate their child,” said Tom Hernandez, Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 spokesman.

enters kindergarten or first grade, sixth grade and ninth grade.

According to Illinois State Board of Education officials, these requirements apply to all schools in the state, whether public, charter or private. They recommend parents or guardians contact their health care provider, county health department or pharmacy to schedule appointments for recommended or required vaccinations.

JOLIET – Route 66 Raceway and D’Arcy Buick GMC hosted the D’Arcy Buick GMC Route 66 Classic on Saturday, which paid homage to early drag racing and hot-rod culture.

Fans were allowed to take their classic car down the drag strip with a time-trial run card, or show their classic car (model year 1979 and older) in the Cruise-in Car Corral preferred parking area. The youngest fans were invited to stop by the Kids Club to participate in the Official Classic Treasure Hunt.

Minooka church provides giveaways from the heart

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media correspondent MINOOKA – The long line that snaked Saturday morning around Minooka Bible Church began at 5:15 a.m. and ended when the doors officially opened about three hours later.

Many of the hundreds who stood in line for The Great Church Giveaway had been before and knew the value of arriving early.

Inside the church were clothes, toys, furniture, baby items, exercise equipment and knickknacks by the thousands – items not needed by community members anymore and donated the night before. And they were free to

anyone who came.

Before those last in line were even in the door, Erica Mortensen of Joliet and her helpers were moving a mattress and box spring set out the side door. They were second in line that morning, and Mortensen was specifically looking for a bed. She had been keeping her eye on it all morning, as it was visible through the large plate glass windows.

“I’m looking for a bed for me and my daughter,” she said just before the doors opened. “Once it’s claimed, I can go look at other stuff.”

The first to arrive at the event were Bud and Pat Springer of Morris.

Erica Mortensen of Joliet Bud said. “It’s a good outing.”

Pat Springer said the couple was looking for DVDs this year. Last year, they walked away with clothes for their grandchildren and daughters.

Church member and event organizer Allison Selk said this is the sixth year of the event that is designed to be one of the church’s contributions to the community. Selk

is a freelance correspondent for Shaw Media.

“Our mission is to be real with God, to be real with each other and to be real with the world,” she said. “I think being a servant to the Lord is what we’re meant to do.”

The event gets bigger each year, and the church received at least twice as much furniture donated this year as in previous years. The church had reached out for those items in particular through social media, and hoped to target Coal City tornado victims as recipients, among others.

Donated furniture spilled out into the church’s atrium for the first time, and couches, treadmills and lawnmowers were placed outside.

Jonathan and Selena Visser of Morris have “one boy and one girl and one unknown on the way,” and found several treasures at the giveaway, including a large football toy box, a toy kitchen and a viewfinder.

Monica Heninger of Channahon, also pregnant and due any day with five children at home, was resting on a sectional sofa she and her husband, Keith, had claimed, along with a dining room table set, rocking chairs and other items. The family just moved back to the area from South Dakota.

“Right now we’re using a patio table with three little seats,” she said. “We all have to take turns.”

New Lenox Veterans Memorial restoration nears completion

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – The New Lenox Veterans Memorial will rise again after being destroyed in September.

On Sept. 27, New Lenox police were notified that the stone monuments at the memorial representing each U.S. military branch had been tipped over and broken.

Only the U.S. Army monument was left standing without damage.

Many were outraged over the incident and decided to raise money to restore the site with additional enhancements. Under a fund established by the New Lenox VFW Post 9545, $55,000 was generated to complete the restoration.

“It was a great outpouring of support to restore. … We enhanced it tremendously,” New Lenox Mayor Tim Baldermann said.

The fundraising was a collaboration between Baldermann, a few village trustees and several New Lenox veterans organizations. In November, Exelon donated $10,000 for the site to be restored.

A rededication service for the memorial will be held Saturday, when construction is expected to be complete. The day will mark the 11-year anniversary of its original dedication.

As part of the restoration, the landscaping at the site was improved. The entrance monument was upgraded and given a brushed aluminum dedication plaque.

Two extension wings were added at the site with a Purple Heart monument and flag in one wing and a fallen soldier monument and flag in the other. The extension wings include a new paver area. An added sound system will play taps every day at

sunset.

“Regardless of what’s happening, or if anybody is out there, taps will always play at sunset,” Baldermann said.

In October, New Lenox police officials arrested Brian Sundstrom of Bourbonnais who was charged with criminal damage to state-supported property.

Police officials said at the time of his arrest that he came to the police station to speak with detectives about damages to the site and detectives thought there was enough probable cause to arrest him.

According to Will County court records, his case is ongoing.

Baldermann said Sundstrom’s destruction of the site didn’t appear to be a deliberate statement or attack on veterans.

Lockport American Legion to host ‘Moving Wall’ Vietnam War memorial The HERALD–NEWS LOCKPORT – The Lockport American Legion John Olson Post #18 will host from Thursday to Aug. 24 the Vietnam Memorial “Moving Wall.”

The Moving Wall is a halfsize replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., and has been touring the country for more than three decades, according to The Moving Wall website.

The idea behind its creation was to share the experiencing of seeing the wall with those who could not make it to the nation’s capital.

The Moving Wall will be at 15052 Archer Ave. in Lockport. An opening ceremony is planned for 6 p.m. Thursday.

The keynote speaker will be Vietnam veteran and Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Allan Lynch. The event includes a posting of

the colors, lighting the vigil flame, and an honoring of 12 local veterans who gave their life during the Vietnam War. The event will be an opportunity for veterans and families of veterans to share the wall and remember those lost during the Vietnam War. Viewing of the Wall is open 24 hours a day starting after the opening ceremony and finishing at 3 p.m. Aug 24 with a closing ceremony.

do fun activities, attend workshops and go on outings.

Cowell wants to expose the young girls to as many activities as possible so they can find their own passion. They might go to an archery range and learn to shoot an arrow, go on a field trip to the zoo or participate in a workshop put on by a local business.

What each group does will be in part up to the girls, but the leaders will provide guidance so they can get a flavor of many different activities – especially things they might not have considered.

“We are trying to stay with things that are relevant to today’s world,” Cowell said.

Cowell said she was 45 before she realized she could make a difference in the world, and she wants young girls to find this out much sooner.

To that end, part of Tween Girl Power is about giving back to the community. All events will include a collection of toiletry items which will be donated to people displaced by disasters.

Cowell took on this project in March and already has lined up three leaders for local chapters. Her goal is to have at least 10. Leaders must undergo a background check and follow the program guidelines.

There is an advisory board made up of three tweens and their moms, but two more mother/daughter teams are being sought to help plan and direct the program.

Eventually, Cowell wants it to go statewide and national.

She is working through local schools to get the word out to the tweens and their parents.

There will be an upcoming informational meeting scheduled, so families should be on the lookout for literature.

The program also has a Facebook page and a website, Tweengirlpower.com, for additional information. The Facebook page already has more than 300 followers.

On Saturday, a fundraiser will be held and all tween girls and moms are invited to attend from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Minooka Village Hall on McEvilly Road. There will be an ongoing Bingo game with prizes that progress to a grand prize. There also will be up to 15 vendors with products

geared toward tweens.

The money raised at Tween Girl Power fundraisers will help to defray the costs for outside trips and activities. There is a membership fee to join, but Cowell doesn’t want to see families get hit with ongoing costs for everything they do.

Cowell has big goals for this program, and said she is up to the challenge because she knows how important it is to young girls everywhere.

“If they can realize the world is a much bigger place than their classroom or school,” said Cowell, “things that people around them say doesn’t matter quite as much.”

Shorewood resident and mom of two girls Andrea Cowell has taken on a major project to help tween girls build self-esteem and confidence and help them navigate the rocky road ahead of them.

Cowell’s daughters are 19 years apart, so she’s been through that tough period with her oldest and knows what’s in store for her youngest. But when she Googled activities for tween girls, considered ages 8 to 12, she found nothing.

That prompted Cowell to get involved and start a program called Tween Girl Power.

“This is the age when they start feeling peer pressure, dealing with mean girls or becoming a mean girl,” Cowell said.

Woman took love of sport to recognize the accomplishments of area bowlers

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – In the Joliet area, the name of Mary Jane Sporar almost was synonymous with bowling.

She served in key positions of many different bowling associations. Some were held locally, but others were at the state, regional and even international level.

But for Mary Jane, this passion for bowling wasn’t about her own game. Mary Jane wasn’t a phenomenal bowler and never attained a 300 game, said Jill Postma of Plainfield, Mary Jane’s daughter.

Bowling, for Mary Jane, was about people.

Mary Jane started bowling in her 20s so she could connect with her father, an avid bowler, Jill said. She also recognized local bowlers’ accomplishments through a bowling column in The Herald-News that spanned nearly six decades.

“She promoted bowling a lot,” Jill said. “She thought it was healthy and great for social activities, and getting kids interested in competition and striving for goals. She saw all the different aspects of bowling.”

Libby Hall of Joliet, the president of the Joliet Area United States Bowling Congress Women’s Bowling Association, said Mary Jane was a rich source of local bowling history, knew industry people from throughout the country and freely shared anything she thought might be helpful.

“She was president for 27 years, starting in 1952 and she ran the 27 years straight through,” Libby said of the Joliet Area USBC WBA. “She was a terrific person.”

Mary Jane also was an award-winning sports writer, thoroughly dedicated to spreading accomplishments of the Joliet area community bowling in a timely way – even staying up all night to get state tournament scores in the mail the next morning, Libby said.

“People would call her at midnight and say, ‘I have a 300,’ and she would have it in

the newspaper the next day or the day after,” Libby said.

One might think such commitment to a sport would leave Mary Jane with little time for anything else, but that was not true. Mary Jane attended beauty school for a short time and was an avid reader – especially of historical fiction.

Mary Jane Mary Jane was also an excellent gardener Sporar and a rose-tester for Jackson & Perkins, Jill said. She had peach, apple and pear trees. A former competitive swimmer in her youth, Mary Jane shared that passion with her children by taking them swimming at Legion Lake in Plainfield.

And Mary Jane was proud of her son, John Hamrin of Michigan, and his naval service in Vietnam, Jill added.

“She really loved her family,” Jill said.

These other interests of Mary Jane’s and her whole-hearted enjoyment of them, coupled with her staunch backing of her family’s individual pursuits, had lasting effects.

“She gave me the love of books and I became a librarian,” Jill said. “She encouraged my brother to be an artist even though she did not have artistic skills, although she certainly had the writing skills, which you see throughout the family. At least two of her grandchildren are writers and another one is a master gardener.”

Mary Jane was 95 when she died Aug. 7.

ELAINE A. BLASDEL Elaine A. Blasdel (nee Ringfelt), age 86, a lifetime Joliet area resident, passed away peacefully in her sleep, at home, Friday, August 14, 2015.

Born December 25, 1928, to the late Ruth and Walter Ringfelt, Elaine attended Joliet schools and was a graduate of Joliet Township High School. She worked for Paul Harvey in her earlier years and retired from the Joliet Herald News after many years of service.

Beloved mother of Gayle (Harry) Quinlan of Channahon, IL and Diane (Joe) Prillwitz of Mosnee, WI; loving grandmother of Kristin Prillwitz, Melissa (Keith) Allen, Heidi Prillwitz, Jonathon (Madison) Prillwitz and Kelly (Ron) Dube. A proud and devoted great grandmother of Quinn Allen and Olivia Dube; she was eagerly awaiting the arrival of three (including twins) additional great grandkids due later this year. Also survived by her long-time special friend, Glenn Brosel.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signs bills affecting veterans

SPRINGFIELD – Gov. Bruce Rauner signed several bills Sunday affecting Illinois veterans, including a measure establishing a discount card program and another offering property tax breaks for those with military-related disabilities.

The Republican first-term governor’s office released a short statement Sunday saying six bills had been signed in honor of Veterans’ Day at the Illinois State Fair. Veterans received free entrance to the fair Sunday with events honoring those who’ve served.

One newly-signed law provides tax breaks to veterans who make accessibility upgrades to their homes, such as wheelchair ramps and lifts. Such changes wouldn’t increase the assessed valuation of the property for years after improvements are made, under the law. It would also allow certain disabled veterans to quality for an annual property tax exemption of $2,500. The legislation, which takes effect immediately, received unanimous support from lawmakers.

Another plan that takes effect immediately is the state’s Department of Veterans’ Affairs will establish and administer a veterans and active duty discount card program for use at participating merchants. House and Senate lawmakers voted unanimously in favor of the legislation.

CHICAGO – Authorities said a man has been shot and seriously injured by a Chicago police officer during a traffic stop.

U.S. Army skydiver dies from Chicago air show injuries

CHICAGO – A U.S. Army skydiver who had served five tours of

duty in Iraq and Afghanistan died Sunday from injuries suffered in a midair collision with another jumper during a demonstration at the Chicago Air & Water Show, authorities said.

Corey Hood of Cincinnati, Ohio, who had recently turned 32, was pronounced dead Sunday afternoon at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, said Mario Johnson, a Cook County medical examiner’s investigator.

Hood had logged more than 200 free fall jumps and 75 military static line jumps during his career, according to his Army biography.

The Army Golden Knights and Navy Leap Frogs parachute teams were performing what is known as a “bomb burst” Saturday when the collision occurred, Golden Knights spokeswoman Donna Dixon said. During the jump, parachutists fall with red smoke trailing from packs and then sepa-

rate, creating a colorful visual in the sky.

Dixon said Hood collided with a member of the Navy’s precision skydiving team.

Hood was knocked unconscious, “which resulted in an uncontrolled offsite landing,” Dixon said in a statement.

The other parachutist, who has not been identified, landed on North Avenue Beach near the main viewing area for the show, Fire Department spokesman Juan Hernandez said Saturday. He was treated for a broken leg.

Female skydivers set new state record in central Illinois

OTTAWA – Thirty-nine women skydivers from around the country have set a state record in northern Illinois.

The women jumped from two planes Saturday afternoon to build a cross-shaped belly

formation over Skydive Chicago in Ottawa.

The skydivers topped the previous record of 35 women set in August 2013. The national record is 182 women.

Illinois Dems push to fund state grants for college students

SPRINGFIELD – Senate Democrats are pushing to fund grants for Illinois college students even though the state doesn’t have a budget in place.

Sen. Daniel Biss of Evanston said he’ll seek initial approval Wednesday for a plan to authorize spending about $373 million for the Monetary Award Program.

The agency that administers the grants can’t disperse money because Illinois lawmakers haven’t been able to agree on a budget for the fiscal year that began July 1.

Target of 18-day manhunt dies in California shootout The ASSOCIATED PRESS RIDGECREST, Calif. – An 18-day manhunt in the mountainous high desert of central California ended when two deputies opened fire on a man who pulled out a handgun during a confrontation on a rural road, authorities said Sunday.

Benjamin Peter Ashley, 34, was struck by several rounds after he failed to comply with orders to drop the weapon as he walked toward foothills east of Bakersfield on Saturday, Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood told The Associated Press.

Ashley, who was suspected of killing a retired dentist, taking three men hostage and wounding two deputies, may have turned the 9 mm handgun on himself after being shot by the deputies, Youngblood said.

An autopsy planned for Monday will determine the cause of death.

“He either died from his injuries, or he shot himself and died. It’s hard to confirm

at this point,” Youngblood said.

Three other weapons, including a pair of .44-caliber handguns, were found on Ashley’s person and in a backpack he was carrying, the sheriff said.

The confrontation came after the owner of a rural convenience store reported a man matching Ashley’s description had come in and bought about $100 worth of junk food.

“He was dirty. He looked like he had been hiking for days,” Gary Welfl, the owner of Brady’s Mini-Mart in Inyokern, told KERO-TV. Dozens of deputies and officers from various agencies had been searching in remote terrain about 30 miles east of Bakersfield for Ashley, who was described as a homeless man.

Ashley is suspected in a crime spree that began on July 28 when a gunman took three men hostage in a cabin in the Twin Oaks area after they confronted him about squatting on their property.

Authorities said the suspect held the men for more than an hour and threatened to kill them before they escaped.

The search intensified two days later when David Markiewitz, 64, was found dead in another cabin in Jawbone Canyon, about 10 miles away.

On Aug. 1, two SWAT team members were shot and wounded by a shotgun-wielding man as they searched a mobile home in Kelso Valley for Ashley. One deputy was shot in both arms, and the other was grazed.

During the manhunt, authorities warned residents to stay inside and lock their doors and windows. Two elementary schools and a middle school were shut. Authorities also closed a stretch of the famed Pacific Crest Trail in the southern Sierra Nevada during the manhunt.

The 5-square-mile search area is dotted with unoccupied homes and trailers, outbuildings, abandoned mines and caves and other hiding places.

Julian Bond, former civil rights activist, dies at 75

HOLLAND and JEFF MARTIN The Associated Press ATLANTA – Julian Bond’s life traced the arc of the civil rights movement, from his efforts as a militant young man to start a student protest group all the way to the top leadership post at the NAACP. Year after year, the calm, telegenic Bond was one of the nation’s most poetic voices for equality, inspiring fellow activists with his words in the 1960s and sharing the movement’s vision with succeeding generations as a speaker and academic. He died Saturday at 75.

Former Ambassador Andrew Young said Bond’s legacy would be as a “lifetime struggler.”

“He started when he was about 17, and he went to 75,” Young said. “And I don’t know a single time when he was not involved in some phase of the civil rights movement.”

Bond died in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, after a brief illness, according to a statement issued Sunday by the Southern Poverty Law Center, an advocacy group he founded in 1971 and helped oversee for the rest

of his life. His wife, Pamela Horowitz, said Bond suffered from vascular disease.

Her husband, she said, “never took his eyes off the prize and that was always racial equality.”

The son of a college president burst into the national consciousness after helping to start the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, where he rubbed shoulders with committee leaders Stokely Carmichael and John Lewis.

As the committee grew into one of the movement’s most important groups, the young Bond dropped out of Morehouse College in Atlanta to serve as communications director. He later returned and completed his degree in 1971.

Bond was elected to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1965, but fellow lawmakers, many of them white, refused to let him take his seat because of his anti-war stance on Vietnam. The case went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which ruled in his favor.

Bond finally took office in 1967.

He was called upon time and again to write it, to express it,” said Eleanor Holmes Norton, who was Bond’s colleague on the student committee and later wrote a friend-of-the-court brief for the American Civil Liberties Union when Bond’s case was before the high court.

“Justice and equality was

the mission that spanned his life,” Obama said in a statement. “Julian Bond helped change this country for the better.”

In 1968, he led a delegation to the Democratic National Convention, where his name was placed in nomination for the vice presidency, but he declined because he was too young.

He served in the Georgia

House until 1975 and then served six terms in the Georgia Senate until 1986. He also served as president of the law center from its founding until 1979 and later was on its board of directors.

Bond was elected board chairman of the NAACP in 1998 and served for 10 years.

He was known for his intellect and his even keel, even in the most emotional situations, Young said.

“When everybody else was getting worked up, I could find in Julian a cool serious analysis of what was going on,” Young said.

In the most intense debates, Bond was “always a gentleman” and never mean, his wife said.

Bond often was at the forefront of protests. In 1960, he helped organize a sit-in involving Atlanta college students at the city hall cafeteria.

“We never thought that he really would participate and be arrested because he was always so laid back and cool, but he joined in with us,” recalled Carolyn Long Banks, now 74, who said Bond never sought much recognition in those early years.

Wreckage of missing Indonesia plane seen

By ALFIAN KARTONO The Associated Press JAYAPURA, Indonesia – A search plane has spotted the wreckage of an Indonesian passenger plane that went missing with 54 people onboard, rescue officials said Monday.

There was no immediate word if there were any survivors from the crash, which happened in bad weather Sunday in Indonesia’s mountainous easternmost province of Papua.

The Trigana Air Service plane was flying from Papua’s provincial capital, Jayapura, to the Papua city of Oksibil when it lost contact with Oksibil’s airport. Transportation Ministry spokesman Julius Barata said there was no indication that the pilot had made a distress call.

Officials said the wreckage was spotted about seven miles from Oksibil, and Henry Bambang Soelistyo, the chief of the

National Search and Rescue Agency, said search and rescue teams were preparing to try to reach the crash site by air and foot.

The ATR42-300 twin turboprop plane was carrying 49 passengers and five crew members on a scheduled 42-minute journey, Barata said. Five children, including two infants, were among the passengers.

Search planes went into the air early Monday after residents of a village not far from Oksibil told local police that they saw a plane flying low before crashing into a mountain, said Ludiyanto, who heads the search and rescue operation from Jayapura.

Ludiyanto, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, said rugged, forested terrain and bad weather were hindering the search.

Local media reports said all the passengers are Indonesians. The airline has not released a passenger manifest.

And even as some in law enforcement point a finger of blame at Backpage, others on the front lines of the fight against sex trafficking see the site as an ally – even if sometimes uncomfortably so.

“I don’t feel like demonizing them is the appropriate response. I feel like we should

be working with them and focusing on ... things that could make a difference,” said Sgt. Grant Snyder, the lead detective on the human trafficking team at the Minneapolis Police Department.

Like officials in other bigcity departments, he confirms that he regularly gets information directly from Backpage that helps convict traffickers and rescue victims. “It helps us recover more victims. It helps us recover them sooner.”

Dart said the help hardly justifies the crush of ads the site creates. He estimated that the company, in April alone, published more than 1.4 million adult services ads and made at least $9 million.

Some ads are posted by sex workers such as Grace Marie, a dominatrix in Los Angeles who tweeted recently to complain about Dart’s campaign.

“As a system, Backpage is decidedly anti-pimp. It creates a direct and easy-to-use interface between providers and clients,” Grace Marie said when contacted by the AP. She uses her first and middle names in her work and asked that her last name not be used.

The bigger concern among law enforcement, however, is sex trafficking.

Victims are not always, as many think, women or children smuggled in from foreign countries to work as sex slaves.

Police said sex trafficking is as much a homegrown crime – with victims who could be from just around the corner, controlled by pimps with drugs and alcohol or threats.

CHICAGO – The adult ads on Backpage.com are endless – written in a sort of risqué code to avoid implying something illegal, yet still obvious invitations for sex, adorned with suggestive photos and videos.

Many in the fight against sex trafficking loathe the website, particularly because some escorts in the ads have turned out to be minors who’ve been forced into the sex trade.

An Illinois sheriff is among those targeting Backpage and recently helped convince Visa and Mastercard to stop providing payment services to the site.

“Whoever it is that’s facilitating these horrible crimes, we can’t just sit back and say, ‘Well, that’s OK. I guess it’s a business model,’” said Thomas Dart, the sheriff in Cook County.

He spoke to The Associated Press the day before a judge issued a restraining order, preventing Dart from making further comment until a Backpage

lawsuit against him – seeking a retraction of his statements to credit card companies and damages for lost revenue – is resolved. Meanwhile, Backpage, with headquarters in Dallas and a parent corporation in Amsterdam, has continued to operate, letting users place free basic ads in its adult category.

Backpage attorneys, citing the First Amendment and federal statutes, argue a public figure shouldn’t be allowed to interfere with a law-abiding company’s ability to do e-commerce.

Liz McDougall, general counsel, has long said Backpage simply provides space for the ads but doesn’t create the content. And she takes it a step further, claiming that Backpage routinely works behind the scenes with law enforcement to help put traffickers behind bars.

When it comes to fighting sex trafficking, “I am a true believer that this is one of the most valuable tools there is on the Internet,” said McDougall, who’s based in Los Angeles.

By KAITLYN JASNICA kjasnica@shawmedia.com MORRIS – During the last girls volleyball season, the Joliet area had an unbelievably talented group of pin hitters.

Among all of those hitters, however, only one had the best offensive season – Kaylin Korte.

Korte ended her junior season five kills shy of 400. Aside from her offensive abilities, she was considered a top out-

side hitter in the area because of her all-around volleyball skill.

“Kaylin is a phenomenal volleyball player,” Morris coach Taylor LaFond said.

“She is such a strong player all around, which makes her so great. She has a great vertical jump, a powerful swing and great court sense, which makes her a great player not only offensively but defensively as well. Kaylin has that eye for the court, where she can

see where the holes are and take advantage of them. That is something that you cannot really teach to a player.

“She also has an amazing passion for the sport. She is so dedicated, determined and committed to perform at a higher level. This girl lives for the sport, and it’s fun to watch her play and see that passion come out.”

As a sophomore, Korte committed to University of Illinois; and in her junior year, she

was the Morris Daily Herald’s Player of the Year after posting 395 kills, 310 digs and 54 blocks. In both of those years, she was the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference Player of the Year.

The 6-foot outside hitter has been a two-time Herald-News All-Area honoree, a two-time 2014 AVCA/Max Preps Player of the Week for Illinois, and a two-time AVCA Phenom Nominee – aside from many other honors.

How did she get so many accolades before her senior year?

“I am really passionate about the sport,” Korte said.

“I love it. I would play it every day if I could. I am a very competitive person, and I hate losing. I take private lessons all of the time and am always striving to be a better player.

“I feel like no one loves volleyball like I do. On the court, I get excited for every point.

Even though she has played volleyball for almost half of her life, Korte’s passion for the sport keeps growing.

Korte followed in the footsteps of her sister, Kendall, and started playing club volleyball at UNO when she was 10.

Playing libero at age 13 might help explain why Korte is a special volleyball player.

Last season, she was the only area player with more than 300 kills and 300 digs.

“It all starts with defense

and passing,” Korte said. “I take that part very seriously.”

Because she takes every aspect of her game seriously, she stands out. To put her defensive abilities into perspective, her statistics more closely match liberos, not hitters.

Because she is a huge threat in both areas, Korte has the chance to break multiple school records in her senior season. The records include digs, blocks, attack attempts and kills. She also can get second place in service points.

Korte’s goal is to reach 1,000 career kills this season.

That will break the school record of 727 that Tori Rezin set in 2007.

playing for 1st Alliance Volleyball Club on the 17-1 team.

“I loved everyone on my team, and we worked really well together,” Korte said. “It was the best volleyball team that I’ve ever played on. Playing with better players makes you better because you’re trying to be better than that person. I love competition, and it’s competitive at 1st Alliance because you’re with a bunch of girls that have the same skill level as you.”

Even though reaching that milestone is her personal goal – along with improving her skills, which is always a goal – Korte wants her team to get better as well.

Many opponents might key

on her early and try to defend her attack, but that doesn’t worry her outside. Having people trying to make it harder for her to get kills will only help her when she’s playing club or playing for the Fighting Illini.

If there’s a triple-block on her, she’ll work on her shots.

If she’s not able to put the ball away, she’s confident one of her teammates will.

Not many, however, are able to put the ball away the way she does.

“I think my team gives me the ball to get points,” Korte said. “I take that as my role, and I like it. I like the pressure. It makes me a better volleyball player.”

Jim Boudouris recently retired as Romeoville’s athletic director after a 40-year association with the school as an athlete, coach, teacher and administrator. becoming a head coach,” Boudouris said. “I knew that it would take time because Dennis was young and very successful, but he retired from coaching to be with his kids when they were playing. And then Bill became head coach, and I’d known him since the 1970s. When Bill left, I was fortunate to get the head job.

“Football-wise, we were competitive, and in some years we were really good. We played good competition but had good players and good assistants, and I was proud to be a part of that. I had a good foundation, first with Faz and then with Dennis and Bill, when I got the opportunity to be the offensive coordinator. All of that gave me a background to become a head coach,

and I loved it. I had young assistants who gave me everything that they had. Then another opportunity came when Dennis retired as AD, and I got the AD job.”

Boudouris thoroughly enjoyed his years as a coach. What was most important to him was working with coaches who shared his passion, as well as leading many great kids.

“In coaching, it was just the excitement of being at practice and game day and all of the work that coaches put in to prepare kids for the game and how the kids would respond,” Boudouris said. “Wins and losses are what everybody sees and, unfortunately, oftentimes that’s a measuring stick. But that’s not really the whole

story.

“The exciting times certainly were when your team was successful in the playoffs, and there were times that we may not have won as many games. But we had some great kids to work with who may not have been great players, but they went on to [have] successful careers and families. Hopefully, what was happening at our school had a lot to do with that. There were a whole lot more positives than negatives.”

Boudouris can’t imagine making a better career choice than the one he chose.

“I’ve been really lucky,” Boudouris said. “This school has been great to me, and I can’t complain. I don’t know how you can be in a leadership position and not have good support from people working for you or from those above you, and that’s what made Romeoville High School a special place for a lot of us. We always had very supportive leadership and a lot of assistant coaches who had a great passion for kids, both on and off the field. The people that I worked for and worked with all played a big role in my professional career.

“For a campus that’s 50 years old, our facilities are as good as anybody’s, and they’re going to continue to get better. In this district, the buildings are run well, the kids get a great educational experience and also an opportunity to participate in activities and athletics. I’m sure there’s a lot of people who don’t enjoy going to work in the morning. We had some days that weren’t so good, but at the end of the day, I couldn’t have selected a better career or a better place to have that career. I had a blast.”

STAFF REPORTS TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – The Joliet Slammers hoped to follow up on their biggest offensive explosion of late as they tried Sunday to take the rubber game of three-game series at Traverse City.

However, although Joliet outhit the Beach Bums, 13-12, it fell far short of matching their 12-run outburst the night before and dropped an 8-4 Frontier League contest.

Traverse City scored four times in the second inning and owned an 8-1 lead before the Slam-

mers’ Nate Roberts hit a threerun home run in the final inning.

Alfredo Rodriguez and Max Casper each went 2 for 4, while Casey Fletcher, Mike Garza and Roberts all were 2 for 5 for Joliet.

The Slammers return to Silver Cross Field on Tuesday for a three-game set with Florence.

ROMEOVILLE – Few get the opportunity to experience what Jim Boudouris did during his 40-year association with Romeoville High School.

The 1974 Romeoville graduate, who played football and baseball at the school right as it split from Lockport, recently retired after a 36-year career during which he served as a coach, teacher and athletic director.

It was Boudouris’ passion for coaching football that led to a career change from being an insurance salesman to becoming a teacher.

When his wife, Lisa, got a teaching job at Romeoville in 1979, the Western Illinois University graduate volunteered to assist two of his coaches, Tony Fazio and Dick Ruppel, with the freshman squad. He started taking night classes and soon was subbing at the school.

Before long, he was a volunteer coach on the varsity team with Dennis Schley and, by 1983, he got his teacher’s certificate and joined the business department. He continued coaching until 2003, when he succeeded Schley as the school’s athletic director.

“I never looked at coaching or teaching as a job, though it was certainly a career,” Boudouris said. “I was very fortunate because I enjoyed going to work. I worked with a lot of great people. And I was fortunate to work with ‘Faz,’ saw a lot of the things that he did and saw his passion for kids. And then Dennis took me on, and he’s been great, and has been to this day. It’s nice when you can have guys who mentored you who are also good friends of yours.”

He got the chance to work on varsity staffs with Schley and Bill Wienke during some successful seasons.

When Wienke left for Joliet Township in 1996, Boudouris became head coach.

BOURBONNAIS – The Bears to put Bourbonnais in their rearview mirrors Sunday for the last time until next year, but first there was one more practice to get through and things on the field got downright grizzly.

Early on, a scuffle broke out between Jeremiah Ratliff and Will Montgomery.

The animosity continued through a good portion of practice, with Kyle Long, Jarvis Jenkins and several others who toil in the trenches getting involved and Ratliff and Montgomery never straying far from the eye of the storm.

Later, rookie Adrian Amos – who is running with the first team at safety these days – got tangled up with Dante Rosario after the tight end beat him to the sideline and the two went down hard well out of bounds, causing tempers on both sides of the ball to flair again.

It was easily the most aggressive and aggression-filled practice of camp, but John Fox appeared to welcome the spirit. “[It’s] just camp. We made it very, very competitive.

This was not one of those nonpadded, easy, exit final days of camp. Stuff happens in camp,” Fox said. “We’ve still got a lot of work to do to find out who the tough guys are. The only way to find out is practices like that.”

While Bourbonnais is behind us, the two most interesting days of training camp this year will unfold Wednesday and Thursday, when the Bears and Colts square off in joint practices in Indianapolis.

After that, there will be three more exhibitions and at least eight more workouts at Halas Hall before the final cuts are made.

Still, the parade of players, coaches, staff, media and fans heading north on Interstate 57 is a touchstone

of every training camp, and it’s worth noting we may be doing so with more questions than we came to town with not quite three weeks ago.

Even when we learned the first day that Kevin White would start camp on the physically-unable-to-perform list, hopes for the wide receiver group were high.

Now he is gone indefinitely; Alshon Jeffery is hobbling around with a calf injury, with the target for his return unknown; and Eddie Royal, brought in to be the No. 3, is the only proven NFL receiver coming to work these days.

If the opener versus the Packers was tomorrow, Royal would start on one side, and Marquess Wilson would start on the other side, and Marc Mariani would be in the slot.

On the defensive line, Ratliff is a stud, with his health being his lone question mark.

Ego Ferguson and Will Sutton are looking impressive as sophomores, and Jarvis Jenkins and Eddie Goldman have been intriguing.

But absolutely no one has emerged behind them.

In the secondary, it’s hard not to like the blend of youth and savvy veterans at cornerback; there are plenty of options for the nickel; and Antrel Rolle will be an

upgrade at one safety.

But the other safety spot still is open to more auditions than the next cast of Blue Man Group.

On the upside, Jay Cutler has had an extremely solid camp, and both the depth and quality at running back is impressive.

From right guard to left tackle, Long, Montgomery, Matt Slauson and Jermon Bushrod look as if they could be one of the better road grading, run blocking lines in the league. This team will run the ball well.

Unfortunately, Jordan Mills continues to be a weak link at right tackle, with no one to push him.

Finally, there are the linebackers, arguably the biggest question of all coming into camp. And while we are no closer today to knowing who the starters are or how the top eight will stack up on the depth chart, we’ve seen more than enough talent there for Vic Fangio to work a little bit of his magic.

What did we learn in Bourbonnais? This unfinished product has a very long way to go.

Sale matched a career high with 15 strikeouts while pitching seven scoreless innings, and the Sox snapped the crosstown Cubs’ nine-game win streak with a 3-1 victory Sunday.

Jose Abreu, Melky Cabrera and Alexei Ramirez homered for the Sox, who had lost 10 of 15. Abreu, Cabrera and Carlos Sanchez had two hits apiece.

Sale (11-7) allowed one hit – Dexter Fowler’s one-out single in the sixth – and walked two.

It was his 11th double-digit strikeout game of the year and ran his total for the season to a major league-best 208 K’s.

“I always enjoy playing the Cubs,” Sale said. “The atmosphere alone, this was probably the best atmosphere I’ve ever pitched in, honestly.”

The Cubs were trying for their first double-digit win streak since they won 12 in a row in 2001. But Dan Haren (88) allowed the three homers in his 42⁄3 innings, and the Cubs struck out 18 times in all.

The Cubs loaded the bases in the sixth, but Sale struck out Jorge Soler looking to end the inning. The lanky lefthander improved to 2-0 with a sparkling 0.64 ERA in two starts against the North Siders this year.

“He made us look silly. But that’s what he does,” Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo said.

David Robertson allowed Soler’s two-out homer in the ninth before finishing for his 24th save in 30 chances.

Addison Russell reached on an infield hit after a replay challenge overturned the call on the field, but Starlin Castro grounded out to end the game.

Abreu hit his 22nd homer in the third. Ramirez connected in the fourth, and Cabrera added his eighth homer in the fifth on a hot day. It was 94 degrees at first pitch.

“This is what I grew up playing baseball in,” said Sale, who is from Lakeland, Florida. “I felt comfortable. You get a little sweat going, and you stay loose.”

Haren, who was acquired in a July 31 trade with Miami, has allowed 27 home runs this season. He was struck in the right foot by a hard Sanchez grounder in the second. After throwing a few warmup pitches, Haren stayed in the game and got two popouts.

The Cubs had won 15 of 16.

Rookie Kris Bryant went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts, ending his 12-game hitting streak.

“A couple of guys, he executed every pitch in every at-bat,” Sox catcher Tyler Flowers said about Sale. “He’s tough when he doesn’t hit spots. And when he does, it’s almost impossible.”

Kenseth, the pole winner, won for the 34th time in his career, leading 146 of 200 laps in the 400-mile race. Joe Gibbs Racing has won five of the last six Cup races.

Kevin Harvick was second, 1.7 seconds behind, and Martin Truex Jr. was third.

Austin Dillon, who was sent to the back at the beginning of the race because of an engine change, managed a fourth-place showing, and Kyle Busch took another step toward wrapping up a spot in the Chase with an 11th-place run in his backup car.

Clint Bowyer’s Chase chances look more tenuous after he went into the wall Sunday and finished 41st. Busch came into the race in 30th place, needing to avoid major mistakes because a top-30 ranking is required for entry into the Chase. Busch wrecked his car in practice Saturday and had to start the race from the back, but he had a solid, uneventful day, even leading for a couple stretches.

Harvick remained atop the standings and now leads Joey Logano by 48 points. Logano finished seventh.

Jason Day shows major mettle, wins PGA Championship

By DOUG FERGUSON The Associated Press SHEBOYGAN, Wis. – A year of major heartache ended with Jason Day breaking through in a major way Sunday at the PGA Championship.

With at least a share of the 54-hole lead for the third straight major, Day never gave Jordan Spieth or anyone else much of a chance at Whistling Straits. He closed with a 5-under 67 for a three-shot victory and broke Tiger Woods’ major championship record for most strokes under par by finishing at 20 under.

In tears before tapping in for par, Day hugged his son and wife and then Spieth, who earned a small consolation prize with his runner-up finish. Spieth moved to No. 1 in the world, ending the one-year reign of Rory McIlroy.

Last week, we looked at New Minor Forcing. After one of a minor – one of a major – one no-trump, two of the unbid minor by responder is artificial, promises at least game-invitational values, and asks opener for more information. But readers asked two questions. First, what happens after one club - one diamond - one no-trump?

For many pairs, opener’s rebid denies a four-card major. However, even if opener may ignore a four-card major (especially with 4-3-3-3 distribution), most pairs treat responder’s rebids as natural. If he continues with two of a major, it is a reverse and forcing to game. But if you like, you could treat a two-club rebid as NMF. (If you do, then a three-club jump-rebid is a weak signoff.)

In this auction, North-South reached the only game that could be made. Over North’s three diamonds, South had an awkward call. He might have tried four clubs, but that probably would have led to five diamonds, where South would have lost two spades and one club.

Four hearts needed prudent play after West started with three rounds of spades. South carefully discarded his club loser. East’s best defense was a club shift. Declarer won with his ace, drew two rounds of trumps, cashed two top diamonds, and drew the rest of the trumps, discarding dummy’s last diamond. Then South took the last three tricks with his high diamonds.

to take a combination of four drugs for about six months. By treating the TB now, when it’s not causing symptoms, you can greatly reduce the risk of ever getting sick.

When I entered medical school, we screened nearly everyone for TB. Since then, the number of people in the U.S. harboring TB bacteria has dropped greatly. Today, we perform screening tests only in people who are at somewhat increased risk. These include people who have been in close contact with others who have an active TB infection, people who have lived in parts of the world where TB is common, health care workers, people who work in prisons or homeless shelters, and people with weakened immune systems.

I get screened for TB every year because I’m a health care worker.

When I was very young, a person close to me had active TB. That was before there were good antibiotics to treat TB. Fortunately, tests showed that the TB bacteria never entered my body when I was young. But I still get retested each year because all health care workers are at risk of being exposed to new TB infections.

In my medical career, I’ve also taken care of quite a number of patients with active TB who were coughing, but fortunately they also did not pass the bacteria to me.

I’m glad I get a regular screening, as it protects me against a disease that can be very serious.

Dear Dr. K: Why does my doctor want to test me for tuberculosis? I thought that was eradicated a long time ago.

Dear Reader: It would be wonderful if tuberculosis (TB) had been eradicated long ago. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.

The annual number of new cases in the United States has been dropping over the past 20 years.

However, around the world, particularly in developing nations, TB remains a huge problem.

More than 1 million people die of TB each year.

TB is an infectious disease, caused by a particular kind of bacteria. The infection usually attacks the lungs, although it can spread to other parts of the body. It is highly contagious. TB bacteria are spread from person to person through the air, in droplets of secretions that come out of your mouth or nose when you cough or sneeze. (I’ve put an illustration on my website, askdoctork.com.)

When TB bacteria enter a person’s lungs for the first time, they often don’t cause any symptoms. At this point, the immune system usually can keep the bacteria from multiplying. But it cannot destroy them completely. The bacteria can remain in the lungs, inactive and unnoticed, for decades. (People with an inactive infection are not contagious.) However, in the future, the bacteria can suddenly start to multiply and spread – and make the person very sick. This happens when the immune system is weakened, such as by another disease, or by immune-suppressing treatments.

The only way to tell if a person has an inactive infection is with a TB skin test. (It is also called the “Mantoux tuberculin” skin test.)

Dear Abby: I met an amazing man and have been dating him for about three months. It was almost love at first sight.

I say “almost” because I was hesitant to get involved since I am his boss.

My problem is, for six years I was in an emotionally and physically abusive relationship. My ex threw me through a wall, leaving me with broken ribs and lacerations on my face. I was constantly called “fat” – especially when I was pregnant.
