J o s h u a Johnke filed the wrongful death lawsuit Friday in Cook County Circuit Court on behalf of his Francisco mother, Vicky L. Palacios, 54.

The suit alleges Espinal-Quiroz, 51, of Leesburg, Indiana, acted “carelessly, negligently and improperly” and “willfully and wantonly” the day of the crash, disregarding the construction zone’s speed limit, failing to slow and stop his semitrailer and improperly changing lanes.

The suit also accuses Espinal-Quiroz of carelessly and willfully violating federal law by driving beyond the number

of hours allowed by law and falsifying his log book. The suit is seeking damages in “excess of $50,000.”

Espinal Quiroz pleaded not guilty Tuesday during an appearance at the Will County Courthouse on criminal charges related to the accident. He is being held in lieu of a $1 million bond.

Charges against Espinal-Quiroz include falsifying a log book and failing to maintain a log book. Police also cited him for failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

Espinal-Quiroz has a history of traffic violations that date back to 1991 and include three speeding tickets since 2012.

Assistant Will County State’s Attorney Jim Long has previously said other charges, including reckless homicide, are possible as state police continue their investigation.

Espinal-Quiroz’s next court appearance is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Sept. 9.

Sara Hakey, fiancée to Palacios’ oldest son and spokeswoman for the family, could not be reached for comment this week.

Two charged in Joliet bank robbery

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Two men have been charged in connection with a bank robbery that happened Tuesday in Joliet.

Joshua R. Gemmell, 26, of Joliet, and Vernell Butler, 40, of Chicago, were each charged with one count of bank robbery, a felony offense, in U.S. District Court in Chicago Wednesday morning, according to a news release from the FBI’s Chicago office.

The two men were taken in for questioning soon after Tuesday’s bank robbery, which occurred about 10:30 a.m. at Merchant’s and Manufacturers Bank, 990 Essington Road.

Witnesses said they saw a small white car flee the area after the holdup. A few minutes later, patrol officers spotted a matching vehicle in the 1500

block of North Larkin Avenue and attempted to pull it over, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said. A chase ensued Joshua R. to an alley near Gemmell the 1000 block of Cora Street, where two men ran out of the vehicle.

The men were found hiding in a yard in Vernell the 1000 block Butler of Vine Street at 10:49 a.m.

They were taken into custody.

Roechner on Tuesday said the pair will face charges from local police of obstructing justice and fleeing from police.

The two men took about $13,600 from the bank, accord-

ing to the FBI’s affidavit.

Gemmell and Butler are next scheduled to appear in U.S. District Court in Chicago at 10 a.m. Friday.

If convicted of the charges, they could face a possible sentence of up to 20 years in prison, according to the release.

Tuesday’s robbery was the area’s second bank robbery this week.

A teller was shot during a robbery at noon Monday at the First Midwest Bank, 450 N. Bolingbrook Drive in Bolingbrook. In that robbery, police were looking for a black man in his early 20s, about 6-foot, 190 pounds. He was wearing a mask, jeans, a black hoodie, a red hat and a black bandana with white markings.

The FBI is still investigating that incident, said Joan Hyde, a spokeswoman for the FBI’s Chicago office.

QUICK NEWS Oak Lawn man arrested for delivery of drugs BOLINGBROOK – An Oak Lawn man was arrested Tuesday after allegedly bringing $6,000 worth of ecstasy to an undercover officer.

Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad Director Mike Weber said Joshua Burnickas, 23, of the 11400 block of South Oak Park Avenue, had been the subject of a shortterm investigation when he met with the agent around 2 p.m.

Weber said Burnickas was carrying 240 MDMA pills, which sell between $25 to $30 each.

Another 12 pills were found when MANS agents searched his vehicle, according to Weber.

Burnickas was booked into the Will County jail on two counts of delivery of drugs. He is being held on $100,000 bond.

Plainfield strives to keep downtown unique and vibrant “We needed to believe that the economy and traffic was going to improve and hang tough,” Lambert said.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Having a vibrant downtown is vital for the good of all of Plainfield, village officials say.

“Downtown is a critical component,” Village Planner Michael Garrigan said. “It’s fundamentally different than what you would see in the Route 59 or other corridors.”

Downtown Plainfield businesses are crafty, unique and complement each other.

Many local businesses sell items or food available in few other places, if at all.

And a stretch of Lockport Street was designated a historic district in the National Register of Historic Places.

Since reconstruction of Route 59 and the downtown streetscape, including sidewalks and outdoor seating areas, the downtown is becoming what village leaders wanted it to be: a destination point.

“A lot of towns would love to have a downtown like we do,” Mayor Michael Collins said. “Some of the surrounding municipalities are trying to create a downtown. Ours has been here since the conception of the village, developed in the early 1800s.”

Businesses eye downtown Collins said the village has received more interest in businesses looking to set up downtown, but those businesses need to be specialized.

“The downtown area is more of a niche market for business,” Garrigan said. “It requires a different strategy for the village to recruit businesses. We take great pride that we don’t recruit bigname nationals downtown.”

But one of the few bigname retailers on the outskirts of downtown also has a local tinge.

“Like other businesses, the economy has taken a toll on us,” store manager Dave Flentge said. “Our house accounts were hit hard, but we’re trying to work business-to-business back up.”

Flentge said customer service has kept the hardware store afloat through the recession and other hard times.

While many local businesses were hit hard by the recession, several have survived and thrived.

“Some are still here and a lot of them aren’t,” said Cary Miller, owner of Miller’s Old Fashioned Butcher Shop.

“With that economy, you’ve got to have a lot going on to keep going. I have very good quality stuff, and I take care of people.”

Unique service helps business Miller’s butcher shop at 24032 W. Lockport St. has been open for the past 23 years. The shop is unique, processing

deer and wild boar meat.

“We were basically grandfathered into it,” Miller said.

“Not a lot of places process that. As far as a butcher goes, I’m here for the hunter, too.”

For Mary Alice Lambert, weathering difficult economic times was a matter of adjusting the product line in her downtown Plainfield shop and the way she carried them.

that has operated under several names at 24012 W. Lockport St. selling unique foods, gifts and dolls. She has operated from the store for the past 26 years.

“We have customers from a lot of surrounding areas and they are definitely looking for things I have in my store they don’t readily find in other stores,” Lambert said.

She also commended the village for streetscape improvements made to the area.

With their eyes on strengthening the business district, Plainfield officials are interviewing downtown businesses to gauge how it can better retain and help businesses thrive.

The interviews are part of a larger process to retain more business in the village.

Last year, the village sat down with major retailers, such as Wal-Mart, Target and Meijer, to get their perspective.

“We’ve reached out to all the downtown businesses,” Garrigan said. One of the businesses that responded was The Tawny Tortoise.

“We told [the village] we need a stronger retail center with a variety of retail,” Lambert said, adding that downtown still needs to be a center for specialty products.

Another business with a unique twist that opened up last month is The Shrimp Barn, 24136 W. Lockport St. Owner Robert Degen, who also owns a Minooka restaurant by the same name, said since he opened his fresh seafood restaurant, he has experienced the effect of downtown Plainfield.

“It’s very unique,” Degen said. “It takes you back in time a little bit. It doesn’t have the hustle and bustle and it has its own niche industry.

A lot of people are walking up and down the streets.”

Garrigan was pleasantly surprised by how well businesses are doing in the downtown area and how bullish they are.

“One thing that is coming out loud is that they want us to keep events like Cruise Nights and Plainfield Fest,” Garrigan said. “More civic activities are bringing more business downtown.”

Roadways discussed at legislative luncheon

By JESSICA BOURQUE jbourque@shawmedia.com CHANNAHON – Will County lawmakers talked traffic Wednesday during a legislative luncheon organized by the Grundy County Chamber of Commerce.

State Rep. Larry Walsh Jr., D-Elwood, state Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, and Sen. Sue Rezin, R-Morris, were the event’s keynote speakers, providing updates from their respective legislative districts, and highlighting problems they are working to resolve.

“One of the big issues we’re facing is this congestion of traffic through all of the commerce that’s coming out of these intermodal facilities,” Walsh Jr. told the group of public officials, business owners and community representatives.

“We have begun to sit down

and look at serious solutions to what’s going on with this truck traffic,” he continued.

Safety measures and new traffic monitoring systems were put into effect this year, and were working well, Walsh said, up until last month when two accidents within a halfhour of each other July 21 on I-55 claimed six lives.

“It was really working. Until the day that tragic accident happened, there was only three accidents in that zone,” Walsh said.

McGuire reiterated the need for better traffic systems in the county, especially with the amount of semitrailer traffic that moves through the area.

“Certainly one of the fundamental duties of government is to keep people alive,” McGuire said.

“The anticipation is that it would be privately funded.

There would be a toll bridge for trucks, and it would be free lanes for cars,” Walsh said.

Rezin and Walsh also

touched on issues in Springfield, including the state’s budget.

“We adopted a budget that was neither the doomsday budget nor the recommended budget,” McGuire said.

According to McGuire, the budget was a middle ground in which the state will maintain the same levels of funding as the previous year without changing.

Rezin stressed that bringing Illinois’ budget out of a deficit is possible as she cited many other states that have transformed their deficits into surpluses.

“It can happen,” Rezin said. “But it comes with policies. It comes from direction.

It comes from leadership and understanding that you can’t only continue to tax and tax and raise fees to pay for government.”

Ruling on referendum objection expected soon

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A ruling on objections to the Joliet For Eight Districts referendum can be expected within the next 2½ weeks, the city attorney said Wednesday.

The Joliet Electoral Board is scheduled to meet at 3 p.m.

Monday to discuss Sarah Andreano’s objections to the filing sheets for the referendum, City Attorney Jeff Plyman said.

The proposed referendum seeks to change the current City Council structure from five district seats and three atlarge seats – a format that has been in place since the 1950s – to eight district seats.

“The initial meeting is organizational,” Plyman said.

“The board will approve procedural rules, authorize city staff to meet with objectors and proponents at the Will County Clerk’s office and set a date for the evidentiary hearing, where the petitioner will have the opportunity to show that the peti-

tion is invalid.”

Plyman said the evidentiary hearing likely would occur within one to two weeks of the initial meeting. The matter needs to be wrapped up before Aug. 28, which is the county’s deadline for placing a question on the ballot.

Plyman said city and county staff, along with the referendum’s proponents and objectors, will examine the petition sheets and compare them to the county’s voting records.

“Basically they’ll go over the petitions line by line, looking at the name and address, to see if each person is registered to vote at that address,” Plyman said.

Andreano’s petition, filed on the Aug. 11 deadline for objections, maintains that the referendum papers contain forged signatures, illegible or incomplete signatures and incomplete or missing addresses, as well as petitioners who are not registered voters or Joliet residents.

Plyman said he believed all

305 pages of the petition – containing about 2,440 signatures – will be examined.

How many signatures needed?

While Concerned Citizens of Joliet has maintained that 1,500 signatures are needed to place the referendum on the ballot, Plyman said he believed the actual number is 8 percent of the total Joliet voters who voted in the last gubernatorial election.

That election was in 2010, when 31,195 people voted in Joliet, according to Will County Clerk Nancy Schultz Voots.

But determining the number of actual Joliet voters is not that simple, Voots said.

First off, not everyone who voted in a Joliet precinct was a Joliet resident; some were residents of Shorewood, Plainfield, New Lenox, Lockport or unincorporated areas.

A more accurate figure, which includes the voters in the wholly Joliet precincts as well as pro-rated numbers of

voters in partly Joliet districts, is 16,483, said Judy Weidmeyer, chief deputy for the county clerk’s office.

Even that number is no longer entirely accurate, since the voting precincts were changed in 2011, Weidmeyer said.

Voots said the county has supplied pro-rated voter numbers by precinct to the city attorney and city clerk. It will be up to the city to determine the number of signatures necessary to certify the measure, she said.

Petition distribution Richard Rodriguez of Concerned Citizens of Joliet, the group that conducted the referendum drive, is questioning how Andreano obtained a copy of the referendum petition papers.

City Clerk Christa Desiderio said the referendum papers, filed at her office Aug. 4, were available to the public for viewing through Aug. 11, either by coming to the front desk or obtaining a copy

through the Freedom of Information Act. Desiderio said she wasn’t aware of anyone asking to see the papers in person. The only copy of the petition that was obtained through the FOIA was by Rodriguez, Desiderio said. Copies of the petition also were emailed to members of the City Council and the mayor, Desiderio said.

Andreano could not be reached for comment, despite attempts to reach her.

Members of the electoral board include Desiderio, Mayor Tom Giarrante and AtLarge Councilman Mike Turk.

The last time the electoral board met was January 2013, to determine whether at-large candidates David Piekosz and John Gnutek should remain on the ballot.

The Joliet Electoral Board agreed that Gnutek should be off the ballot. But the same board kept Piekosz on the ballot before the challenge was taken to Will County Circuit Court.

Maya trial date set for Romeoville murder

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A trial date has been chosen for a 24-year-old man who is accused of killing a 15-year-old girl in her driveway earlier this year in Romeoville.

Lawyers agreed Wednesday that Erick M. Maya, of Cicero, will face a jury trial Sept.

8 before Judge Robert Livas.

On Feb. 13, Maya was allegedly lying in wait outside Briana Valle’s house in the 300

block of Emery Avenue when she and her mother, Alicia Guerrero, got in their car. Briana, a Romeoville High School student who previously dated Maya, was shot in the head and died four days later. Guerrero was shot in the neck but survived.

Maya threatened to rape and kill his ex-girlfriend last year, according to an order of protection for the family, which was extended by a judge the month before her slaying.

LOCAL BRIEFS Woman clipped by train at Union Station in Joliet JOLIET – A woman was clipped by a Metra train Wednesday morning at Union Station.

Joliet Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Carey said the pedestrian was on the platform about 7 a.m. reading a magazine while a train on the Heritage Corridor line was pulling in.

“She was standing too close to the platform and got clipped – sideswiped as it was slowing down to come to a stop,” Carey said.

The 918 train on the Heritage Corridor line was supposed to leave Joliet at 7:05 a.m. The train was delayed a little more than an hour, but service had returned to normal by Wednesday afternoon, according to Metra spokeswoman Meg Reile.

Firefighters took the woman to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center to be treated for head and abdominal injuries.

Smith to undergo evaluation to determine fitness for trial In an unrelated case, Shane Smith, 33, will undergo a psychological evaluation to determine if he is fit to stand trial.

Smith is accused of murdering his mother last October in their home in the 1600 block of Black Road in Joliet.

Smith will be examined by Dr. Randi Zoot before his next court appearance Sept. 4 to see if he can understand he faces charges in court and can work with his lawyers.

The child’s medical condition remains confidential, but police said the doctors reported during follow-up examinations the child’s injuries were less severe than originally believed. Rogers faces three counts of aggravated battery to a child and one count of aggravated domestic battery.

Man rescued from Des Plaines River after jump JOLIET – A man was rescued Wednesday from the Des Plaines River after jumping from the Jefferson Street Bridge.

Battalion Chief Jeff Carey said the 64-year-old man told firefighters he was despondent and jumped into the water shortly before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The rapid current carried the man south past the railroad and Interstate 80 bridges along the west side of the river before he came alongside a barge, Carey said. Barge workers threw the man a rope, which he held on to until firefighters reached him from a boat.

He was brought aboard and taken to the landing near the B&B Riverfront Bar and Grill, where he was checked by paramedics for minor injuries.

He was then taken to a local hospital for evaluation.

Shaelye Varner bought her steer, Ted, last November and at the time of showing he was 17 months old. When picking him out to purchase, she said he looked really good, like he’d have everything needed to win.

“It’s an extreme amount of work for a 12-year-old,” Laurie Baudino said. “She gets up before 5 a.m. and is out washing him by 5 to 5:30 a.m.”

Baudino said other than giving her a morning off here and there to sleep in, Shaelye has gotten up and put in the work without complaining, giving up time with friends to raise the steer.

“Raising the steer is teaching her a huge responsibility.

It’s a huge job and you can’t not do it just because you don’t feel like doing it,” Baudino said.

Shaelye plans to continue to show steer at the state level and hopes to earn even more she can put toward her college education. She wants to study agriculture or become a teacher.

SPRINGFIELD – Shaelye Varner knows it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to raise an award-winning steer.

But nothing prepared the 12-year-old from Morris to have her Grand Champion Junior steer sell for $100,000 at the Governor’s Sale of Champions in Springfield on Tuesday night.

The sale set records at the state fair as the first animal to be sold for a six-figure sum.

AT&T, Monsanto and DeKalb Asgrow combined to bid the $100,000 – which comes to $75.19 a pound when you consider the steer weighs 1,330 pounds.

“This is my second year showing at the state fair,” Shaelye said. “Ted [the steer] has everything a judge wants to see. I had high hopes going into this, but that’s a lot of money.”

She said she will save the money for college. The pro-

ceeds also will help someone else go to college, as 10 percent of the winnings go to FFA and another 10 percent to 4-H for a scholarship fund.

Shaelye comes from a long line of cattle showers: Her mother, Laurie Baudino, and her uncle, Eric Baudino, both grew up showing cattle at the state fair, and her cousin Kevin Carey won state Grand Champion in 2008 with a then-record-setting auction price of $50,000.

“My cousins Eric and Laurie both showed cattle but never got to win at the state show,” Carey said. “Me winning was the icing on the cake. Shae put the candles on the cake. I couldn’t be 155 percent more proud of her.”

Shaelye’s dad, Frank Varner, said his daughter puts in six to eight hours a day with her steer, starting at 4:30 a.m.

“It’s a lot of hard work and a lot of dedication,” Frank Varner said.

The building could serve roughly 41,000 seniors in Mokena from many different eco-

nomic classes, said state Sen. Michael Hastings, D-Tinley Park. Mokena is within Hastings’ district.

“We have senior citizens that are in need and senior citizens that are well off. I think that just because you get a little bit older doesn’t mean you shouldn’t live in your community and shouldn’t have a different way of life,” he said.

He said he sees Mokena as a growing community.

“Younger people are moving here to raise a family because they can get a job and there’s senior citizens who want to retire here. This is where they grew up and raised their family,” he said.

The building’s senior living community will be managed by Iowa-based Life Care Services, the third largest manager of senior living properties in the nation. Elness Swenson Graham Architects Inc. is the project architect.

Gould announces City Council run

Liquor commission cites Homer Glen restaurant

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Longtime Joliet Park District Commissioner Brett Gould announced Wednesday he will run for the Joliet City Council District 2 seat in next year’s election.

Gould will challenge Joliet businessman Patrick Mudron for the seat, now held by Counc i l m a n B o b Brett Gould O’Dekirk, in the April 7, 2015, general election. O’Dekirk is challenging Mayor Tom Giarrante and Andy Mihelich

for the mayoral seat.

“I have been encouraged to run for the Joliet City Council by key city leaders, labor organizations and numerous concerned citizens,” Gould said. “I pledge to bring the same dedication, commitment and fiscal responsibility to the City of Joliet as I have done during my tenure with the Joliet Park District.”

Gould was elected to the park board in 2003. He served four terms as board president, from 2009 to 2013.

His seat is up in April, when he plans to run for councilman.

“Technically, I could run for both, but I would not do that,” Gould said.

He works with Lockport Township High School District 205 as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

Gould said neighborhoods and security would be his priorities.

“We need to focus on neighborhoods and clean them up a bit,” Gould said.

“We also need to make sure people feel safe when they are out and about.”

Finally, Gould said he’d like to bring a little trust and civility to the City Council.

“I’m real proud about the way we’ve handled the park board,” Gould said. “Our members were all civil and respectful of one another,

even when they disagreed.

I think it made for good government. I hope I can bring that to the city.”

A lifelong Joliet resident, Gould and his wife Jackie have three sons, Ben, 13, Trevor, 11, and Evan, 9. He graduated from Joliet Catholic High School in 1978 and is a member of the Cathedral of St. Raymond Parish. In 2010, he earned a doctorate in educational administration and foundations from Illinois State University.

Both Gould and Mudron, his opponent in District 2, are newcomers to the council ballot, as is Leonard Thompson, who is challenging incumbent Terry Morris in District 5.

HOMER GLEN – The Illinois Liquor Control Commission has cited a Homer Glen restaurant, alleging it sold alcohol to an underage customer working undercover with the agency.

The commission reported in a news release that Pepe’s Mexican Restaurant, 14853 S. Founders Crossing in Homer Glen, made the sale during a July 15 check by the state commission and the Will County Sheriff.

The agencies conducted underage alcohol compliance checks at 15 locations in Homer Glen that day.

Throughout July, the agency visited 342 Illinois businesses that sell liquor, citing 47 for liquor control law violations, according to the news release.

The compliance checks run by the Liquor Control Commission are an ongoing cooperative program with local law enforcement agencies and high school and college volunteers.

Teams randomly visit liquor stores, restaurants and bars to check for compliance with state law.

No liquor is to be sold to anyone under the age of 21.

MOKENA – A new Mokena senior living facility promises to offer several “lifestyle neighborhoods” for hundreds of people wanting to live independently or with assistance.

The planned Clarendale of Mokena will be a three-story building at 21536 S. Wolf Road and is the first of its kind in the village. The age-restricted complex will offer three neighborhoods; 60 independent living residents, 56 assisted living residences and 40 memory care residences, as well as common areas for dining and activities.

Developers plan to open the building in fall 2015.

Mokena Mayor Frank Fleischer said construction of the $31.7 million building is needed in an area that has seen increased demand for senior lifestyle choices.

“This is definitely a proj-

ect that I’ve had the most phone calls on,” he said. “People are very interested in this. We have a lot of seniors in town that want to stay in town. We’re not just sticking them into a corner. That’s a big deal for me.”

Fleischer was at the groundbreaking Wednesday for Clarendale of Mokena, along with several village and state officials. Joining him were representatives from companies involved in the building’s development, including project developer-builder Ryan Companies US Inc. Officials could view mounds of dirt, heavy equipment vehicles and construction workers at the site of the future senior living community.

Building residency will be restricted to people 55 years or older. Residents will pay a monthly rent based upon the size and location of the resi-

CPAT work leads to 3 arrests in 2 cases

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Investigatory work by the Will County Cooperative Police Assistance Team led to the arrest of three men in two separate investigations Monday.

CPAT Director Wayne Ladd said officers were conducting surveillance Monday after-

noon in a Weber Road parking lot when they observed a drug deal.

“They were there for an unrelated case, but became suspicious and notified Joliet police when the vehicle left,” Ladd said.

Joliet police stopped the vehicle and brought a K-9 unit to the scene. Ladd said a pound of marijuana was found inside.

Medical marijuana dispensary interested in Shorewood location

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – The village received its first public interest in a medical marijuana dispensary at Tuesday’s board meeting.

Villa Park-based Midwest Compassion Center offered a presentation that detailed the company’s interest in 301 Amendodge Drive.

Mayor Rick Chapman said the Amendodge Drive area is generally used for industrial purposes, but it also is zoned for retail.

“They’re looking to lease some floor space in the industrial area and open up a [dispensary],” Chapman said. “The board had a lot of questions and apparently this outfit answered the questions very candid and open.”

The company wanted to gauge interest in a dispensary and gave the board a chance to discuss and learn about medical marijuana dispensaries.

“We appreciated the opportunity to meet with the Shorewood Village Board,” said Will Hollander, co-founder of the Midwest Compassion Center.

“We believe this facility could be an important opportunity for the local community and give nearby doctors the freedom to determine more options in treating their patients,” he said.

Chapman said the compa-

ny hasn’t applied for a business license yet.

The presentation was informational, so no action was taken by the board.

Salt contract approved Trustees approved a contract for road salt for the 2014-15 season, with Elgin-based Central Salt LLC. “We’re hoping we don’t have as bad a winter as last year,” Chapman said, adding that the harsh weather caused a salt shortage in the village and drove prices up.

The contract is for 1,000 tons of salt at a price of $92.15 a ton, or $92,150 total. The price was less than the state’s program for salt, Chapman said, but the village is still looking for its best option for a second 1,000 ton order of salt.

Outdoor warning siren purchased The village board also approved the purchase and installation of an outdoor warning siren from Fulton Technology for $19,500.

The new siren will be used in conjunction with existing sirens, according to a memo

by Shorewood Police Chief Aaron Klima. The siren will be maintained by the village.

Klima said in the memo that the new siren is needed because existing sirens don’t perform as well and cover enough ground under less than ideal outdoor conditions.

Luis M. Catzin, 50, of the 700 block of Delta Avenue in Romeoville, and Aaron Delatorre, 26, of the first block of Beacon Avenue in Romeoville, were booked into the county jail on charges of delivery of marijuana.

Ladd said Joliet police also made another arrest for a CPAT case Monday.

On July 16, CPAT searched

a residence in the 300 block of Stone Street where Nicholas Ward, 19, resides, Ladd said.

Ward, who police have identified as a known gang member, wasn’t home, but officers found a 9-mm pistol that was reported stolen from Joliet and a 12-gauge shotgun with a serial number that was obliterated, Ladd said.

A warrant was issued for

Ward’s arrest and he was located by police Monday night, Ladd said.

Ward is charged with two counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm, driving without a license and driving without insurance. The Department of Corrections reports Ward is on parole for an aggravated unlawful use of a weapon conviction in 2013.

Plainfield park district appoints executive director Hurtado, Steinys vote present on hiring of Capalbo

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Carlo Capalbo will be hired as the new executive director of the Plainfield Township Park District pending contract negotiations.

The park district board voted, 3-0, to appoint Capalbo at a regular meeting Wednesday. President Mary Kay Ludemann, Vice President Janet Silosky and Commissioner Larry Newton voted for his hire, while commissioners Peter Hurtado and Peter Steinys voted as “present.”

“He interviewed very well,” Ludemann said, adding that the board liked Capalbo’s philosophy, management style and how he treats his own staff. “It was a difficult decision, but he stood out as being a good fit.”

Capalbo is currently the executive director of the Worth Park District, but will start with the Plainfield park district on Sept. 8, Ludemann said.

With Interim Executive Director Richard Grodsky set to leave at the end of August, there will be about a week when the district will have

no director. But Ludemann said that won’t be a problem.

She confirmed that Capalbo will make $115,000 in his first year, with options of a 3 to 6 percent raise each of the next two years of his 3-year contract.

Other details of the contract were unclear as Ludemann said it was still being sorted out.

Hurtado said after the meeting that he and Steinys voted “present” because they supported Capalbo’s hire. But they didn’t agree with certain provisions in the contract.

Commissioners voted on several other items Wednesday.

The board approved the 2014-15 fiscal year budget and appropriations ordinance, engagement letter for auditing services with Lauterbach & Amen LLP, a new investment policy and an engagement letter with Foley and Lardner LLP, to negotiate a contract with the new union for maintenance workers.

However, Hurtado and Steinys both had issues with some items.

They voted against the budget because it included a re-issuance of $3 million to $4 million in bonds that were

set to be paid off this year.

“We should go to the taxpayers if we want to incur additional debt,” Hurtado said.

“There is no harm in putting a referendum on the ballot.”

Grodsky said that the district doesn’t need to go to the public for the re-issuance of those bonds, which were set to deal with potential future projects. He also said it was normal for park districts to reissue those types of bonds.

Hurtado said he and Steinys wouldn’t have a problem with those bonds if they were allocated to a specific project.

Hurtado also said he and Steinys opposed the new investment policy because it got rid of safeguards and gave too much control to the executive director.

Steinys also asked for approval of minutes from previous meetings to be delayed for further review because he felt they didn’t accurately reflect the events of those meetings.

OBITUARIES JOHN W. CANADAY John W. Canaday, age 72, of Plainfield, formerly of Springfield, IL passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, August 12, 2014, with his loving family close by his side.

John leaves behind his beloved wife of 50 years, Wanda “Peach” Canaday (nee Wood); three loving daughters, Cindy (Jeff) Picha, Tonya (Darren) Farris and Jodi Canaday; five granddaughters, Jordan, Kyla, Jamie, Kelsie, and Katelyn; two brothers, Ronald (Lenora) Canaday and Richard (Mary) Canaday; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Preceded in death by his parents, John and Martha (nee Yocum) Canaday; one son in infancy, John W. Canaday.

John was a Local 710 Teamster and retired from truck driving, his last employer was Yellow Freight.

He loved working in the yard and walking. John’s granddaughters were his pride and joy. He shared love throughout his entire family and will be dearly missed.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to Joliet Area Community Hospice for their wonderful care.

TIMOTHY J. CONNOLLY Born: March 31, 1973; in Springfield, IL Died: Aug. 8, 2014; in Channahon, IL Timothy James Connolly, age 41, of Channahon, Illinois passed away August 8, 2014.

Tim was born to Judy Lucasey Clusen (Paul) and the late Terry J. Connolly on March 31, 1973, in Springfield, IL. Most importantly he was and will always be the loving father of Kelly Lynn Connolly, age 17, and James Robert Connolly, age 15. Tim will be dearly missed by sister Karin Jilek (Timothy) who was his best friend, fishing partner, and could be found sitting in the stands with him at any given race.

Also missed by his sister Cindy DeKlerk (Bill), his aunt Beverly Swigelson (Jim) and Uncle Rick Connolly.

Special Friend of many years Jen Heeman (and “the little dogs”) will dearly miss him and the good times they had together. Donna Bick, mother of his children also survives.

His love for anything wheels began as soon as he could peddle a Big Wheel. He earned trophies on the BMX track, rutted neighbors’ yards with a mini-bike and absorbed every opportunity to learn about cars in his dad’s garage. His cherished family memories always involved outdoor activities: camping, fishing, playing baseball, football and watching or participating in racing, and traveling with his family to auto racing.

He was willing to risk poison ivy, thin ice or discovery by property owners to find that next big crappie. He beamed with pride at Kelly’s softball games and James’ baseball games, often expressing strong opinions from the outfields, even traveling to Cooperstown, NY to be James’ biggest fan.

He fell in love with the open-water during his first sail on Lake Michigan, playing pirate and appreciating nature’s beauty. If the fish weren’t biting, he grabbed the golf clubs and hit the links, sharing his natural talents with his golfing buddies.

He acquired skills in the tree-trimming business, but returned to his first love of wheels, finding his second home and loving family at Bill’s Speed Shop, “wheeling” and dealing parts and autos. It is here that he was given the opportunity to travel with race crews, drive competitively, and to be around people he loved. He worked at the shop with his adored pets Tank and Patty Cake close by his side. They will be cared for by the Knippenberg Family continuing to go to the speed shop. Tim was a part of the Knippenberg Family for many years.

Tim always spent time with Kelly and James and his mother fishing, riding go karts, and golfing. He rarely missed an event involving his kids.

He discovered his love of golf with

his mother and continued his love of fishing that he inherited from his father. Everybody knew Tim had those “secret” fishing spots. Most of you have a fish story to tell that involves Tim. It’s hard to tell a story about Tim that doesn’t involve his quick-witted Irish great sense of humor. He had a magnetic smile that attracted friends from every walk of life. He was respected by all for his stubbornness and direct “tell it like it is” personality.

In respect to his wishes and in keeping with his lifestyle, we ask you to dress casually in any attire involving things Tim loved, including Dallas Cowboys, Blackhawks, Cubs, Bears, Bulls, or anything racing.

ARTHUR R. MCPARTLIN Born: March 10, 1924 Died: Aug. 10, 2014 A tender hearted Irishman has been called to his heavenly home. He greeted his family in the morning with “It’s great to be alive” but his body was just worn out from living “the good life” and was called to eternal rest on Sunday, August 10, 2014.

Art was a true family man and nothing gave him greater pleasure than celebrating the many special occasions and activities of his large and growing family of 77 immediate members. He loved apple pie, homemade bread, and making chocolates with his family at Christmas. He knew a person’s life story within minutes of meeting them simply because he was interested. He and Jean traveled to all 50 states, Europe and Ireland. They loved to dance but their greatest love was camping throughout the country in their motor home.

Art was born in Joliet, on March 10, 1924. He married H. Jean Garrett on Father’s Day June 17, 1945. He graduated from Joliet Township High School, the class of 1943. On the day after graduation, in June of 1943, he enlisted in the Navy and shipped out with most of the men in his graduating class, to serve in World War II. He graduated from Joliet Junior College and began his career as a salesman of fine printing paper.

He was an active member of St Jude Catholic Church, New Lenox. He held many positions in Scout Pack 32 (Ingalls Park Methodist Church) including Webelos Den Leader for 17 years. A member of American Legion Post 1977, New Lenox, IL and a founding member of the Cherry Hill Homeowners Association. At one time was called the unofficial Mayor of Cherry Hill.

He is the father of 2 daughters,

Penny (Dave) Newkirk of St. Charles, IL and Tina McPartlin (Zimm) of Joliet, IL; and 5 sons, Kenneth (Julie) of Lake George, New York, Dennis (Marlene) of New Lenox, Brian (Kathy) of Niantic, Connecticut, Tim (Amie) of Willow Springs, IL and Tom (Dean) of Oakdale, Minnesota.

He was “Grandpa Mac” to Richard McPartlin, Happy (Brad) Nacht, Bradley (Cara) Newkirk, Randal (Amy) Newkirk, Craig (Lana) McPartlin, Todd (Isabel) McPartlin, Alicia (Greg) Gonda, Amber (Nick) Meyer, Marissa (Rogelio) Alvarado, Chelsea McPartlin, Kim (Dylan) Carr, Richard Boisclair, Andrew (Natasha) McPartlin, Tracey (Rich) Zaleski, Ian (Christine) McPartlin, Matthew (Jamie) McPartlin and Daniel (Sue) McPartlin. By KERRY LESTER The Associated Press SPRINGFIELD – Faced with a crucial mid-term election where Republicans are seeking to reclaim the governor’s mansion, Illinois Democrats used an annual party gathering Wednesday to provide an early look at their strategy for victory this fall.

Hundreds of county party leaders and volunteers had

March GOP primary, bringing labor squarely to Quinn’s side.

“Illinois is a blue state and we want to keep it a blue state,” Michael Carrigan, President of the Illinois AFLCIO, dressed in a green Quinn t-shirt, told the group. “You start with your core groups.

Your core group is in this room right now. Labor is a part of that, and you are a part of labor.”

Born Gertrude Ida Stefanech in Joliet on January 18, 1924, she was the daughter of Ivan and Elizabeth Stefanech, raised in Fairmont and Lockport. Gert attended Lockport High School and graduated in 1943.

While working at the macaroni plant in Lockport, Gertrude met her husband, Charles, and was married on April 6, 1946. They celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary in 1996.

Gertrude leaves behind to cherish her memory, her loving daughter, Gale (Marvin) York of Georgia; her devoted daughter-in-law, Diane (Mark Seiler) (Tim) Zigrossi of Illinois, and Charlene Conner of Georgia. Surviving grandchildren include, Stephanie (Michael) Battin of Illinois, Heidi (Brendon) Schwartz of Georgia, Douglas York of Georgia, Christopher (Olga) York of North Carolina, Eric (Christina) York of Georgia, Melissa (Brandon) Hartsell of North Carolina, Mathew Seiler of Illinois, Nicholas (Jennifer) Seiler of Illinois, Justin (Kim) Conner of Georgia; and 15 great- grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles J. Seiler in 1997; her son, Mark C. Seiler in 2013; and grandson, Charles A. Seiler in 1987.

Group studying gun trafficking meets in Chicago

CHICAGO – Authorities from two high-crime regions of Illinois detailed some out-of-state sources responsible for the illegal flow of guns and the problems with prosecuting such crimes during Wednesday’s first meeting of a legislative group aimed at studying the issue.

Illinois State Police officials told lawmakers that most of the problem isn’t large-scale trafficking operations, but so-called individual straw purchasers. Those people – like a family member or girlfriend – buy guns legally and provide them to criminals and others who are barred from carrying them. In one recent Chicago-area criminal investigation, hundreds of guns came from Mississippi, where gun laws are more lax, officials said. Mississippi and neighboring Indiana are among the biggest suppliers of illegal guns in the Chicago area.

Lawmakers formed the Illinois Gun Trafficking Task Force earlier this year through a House resolution.

“The biggest public health problem we have is gun violence,” said state Rep. Christian Mitchell, a Chicago Democrat who called for the group. “We’ve got to cut off this flow of guns.”

Doctors: Condition of wounded CEO improving

CHICAGO – Doctors at Chicago’s Northwestern Memorial Hospital said the condition of the businessman who was severely wounded by a disgruntled employee has improved.

The hospital announced Tuesday the condition of ArrowStream CEO Steven LaVoie has been upgraded to serious from critical condition. Doctors credit

his recovery to his excellent health prior to the shooting.

Authorities said the 54-yearold LaVoie was shot in the head and abdomen last month by Tony DeFrances. DeFrances, once listed on the company’s website as the company’s chief technology officer, was meeting with LaVoie to discuss a demotion when the shooting occurred.

DeFrances fatally shot himself.

In a statement posted on its website last week, ArrowStream announced LaVoie’s wife, Jody, has been acting CEO of the company, which sells supply-chain management technology.

Sheriff: Illinois pilot dies in helicopter crash

MANSFIELD – Central Illinois authorities said a helicopter pilot has died after hitting power lines and crashing in a soybean field.

The Piatt County Sheriff’s Office said 47-year-old Paul Reynolds of Mansfield was pronounced dead Tuesday. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating.

The sheriff said emergency responders found Reynolds’ helicopter upside-down in the field near Mansfield. A resident in the area called for help.

Report: Bias seen in Illinois police search data

CHICAGO – A new report finds signs of racial bias in data collected about police searches during traffic stops in Illinois.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois released the report Wednesday. It suggests police are nearly twice as likely to ask blacks and Latino drivers to consent to searches than they are to ask whites. But white drivers are 49 percent more likely than blacks to have contraband found and 56 percent more likely when compared to Latinos.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Obama weighing options for rescuing Iraqi refugees EDGARTOWN, Mass. – President Barack Obama is considering a range of military options, including airlifts and creating safe passages, for rescuing thousands of Iraqi refugees trapped on a mountain, the White House said. A small team of U.S. troops secretly scouted the site Wednesday.

Following the team’s assessment, it was deemed “far less likely now” that the U.S. would undertake a rescue mission on the mountain because far fewer refugees were found there than previously thought, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel told reporters at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland.

U.S. officials said only several thousand refugees remained on the mountain, far lower than the tens of thousands that had been reported earlier. Hagel credited that in part to U.S. airstrikes giving people opportunity to get off the mountain and the food and water the U.S. has airdropped to the refugees sustain them.

Clinton and White House try to shrug off split VINEYARD HAVEN, Mass. – In yet another twist to a complex and heavily scrutinized relationship, Hillary Rodham Clinton and President Barack Obama did their best to shrug off their differences Wednesday as they gathered on Martha’s Vineyard following a foreign policy split.

Gay marriages could begin by next week in Va. RICHMOND, Va. – Same-sex couples could begin marrying as early as next week in Virginia after a federal appeals court refused Wednesday to delay its ruling that struck down the state’s gay marriage ban.

The state also would need to start recognizing gay marriages from out of state next Wednesday, however the U.S. Supreme Court could effectively put same-sex marriages on hold again if opponents of same-sex marriage are able to win an emergency delay. A county clerk in northern Virginia had asked the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond to stay its decision striking down the ban, issued in late July, while it is appealed to the high court.

Protests turn violent in St. Louis suburb

By JIM SUHR and JIM SALTER The Associated Press FERGUSON, Mo. – Protests in the St. Louis suburb rocked by racial unrest since a white police officer shot an unarmed black teenager to death turned violent Wednesday night, with people lobbing Molotov cocktails at police who responded with smoke bombs and tear gas to disperse the crowd.

Ferguson Police Chief Thomas Jackson, who has been the public face of the city torn by Saturday’s death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, told reporters earlier in the day that the St. Louis County investigation of the shooting could take weeks to complete.

In the meantime, he said, his department welcomes Justice Department training on racial relations in the suburb, where two-thirds of the 21,000 residents are black while all but three of the police force’s 53 officers are white.

“Unfortunately, an undertow [of racial unrest] has bubbled to the surface,” said Jackson. “Race relations is the top priority right now.”

While Jackson said he wanted to mend fences with the community, protesters were on the streets of Ferguson again Wednesday, facing heavily armed police who at time trained weapons on them from an armored truck. Two reporters said they were detained by police while working at a McDonald’s in the area. The situation became more tense after nightfall, with police ordering people to go home and then using smoke bombs and later tear gas after some people threw Molotov cocktails and other things at them. Journalists who witnessed the events included an Associated Press photographer.

St. Louis County police spokesman Brian Schellman said he had no immediate information about the situation.

Earlier, Wesley Lowery of The Washington Post and Ryan Reilly of The Huffington Post said they were handcuffed and put into a police van after officers came in to quickly clear the fast-food restaurant where they were doing some work. The Post reported that Lowery said he

was slammed against a soda machine and plastic cuffs were put on his wrists. The reporters were subsequently released without any charges.

Martin D. Baron, the Post’s executive editor, issued a statement saying “there was absolutely no justification” for Lowery’s arrest and said the organization was appalled by the officers’ conduct.

Jackson did not immediately return a cellphone message Wednesday night from the AP seeking comment.

Police have said Brown was shot after an officer encountered him and another man on the street. They say one of the men pushed the officer into his squad car, then physically assaulted him in the vehicle and struggled with the officer over the officer’s weapon. At least one shot was fired inside the car. The struggle then spilled onto the street, where Brown was shot multiple times. In their initial news conference about the shooting, police didn’t specify whether Brown was the person who scuffled with the officer in the car and have refused to clarify their account.

Blast kills AP journalist, translator

By IBRAHIM BARZAK and JOSEF FEDERMAN The Associated Press GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip – Six people – including an Associated Press video journalist – were killed Wednesday when leftover ordnance believed to have been dropped in an Israeli airstrike blew up in the Gaza Strip.

Simone Camilli and his Palestinian translator, Ali Shehda Abu Afash, were covering the aftermath of the war between Israel and Islamic militants in Gaza when they were killed. The blast occurred as Gaza police

engineers were trying to defuse unexploded ordnance fired by Israel.

Four police engineers also were killed, police said.

Three people, including AP photographer Hatem Moussa, were badly injured.

Moussa told a colleague that they were filming the Simone scene when an Camilli initial explosion went off. He said he was hit by shrapnel and began to run when there was a second blast, which knocked him

out. He woke up in a hospital and later underwent surgery before he was transferred to a hospital in Israel for more advanced care.

Police officials in Gaza said the blast took place at a special site set up in the northern town of Beit Lahiya where authorities have collected unexploded ordnance to be defused. The blast’s cause was not immediately known.

Hamas police spokesman Ayman al-Batniji said there clearly had been a “mistake” and there would be an investigation. He said the Palestinians collect unexploded mu-

nitions but usually get help from international experts in disposing of them. “We never deal with these things alone,” he said, adding that police believe only a small fraction of unexploded bombs from the recent fighting have been recovered.

An official said an Israeli tank shell caused the first explosion, triggering the more powerful secondary blast that included several bombs, including unexploded missiles dropped in Israeli airstrikes. The Israeli military carried out nearly 5,000 airstrikes in a month of fighting.

Israel, Hamas to extend temporary truce

By MOHAMMED DARAGHMEH and TIA GOLDENBERG The Associated Press CAIRO – Israel and Hamas agreed to extend a temporary cease-fire for five days, Egyptian and Palestinian officials announced Wednesday, permitting the sides to continue to negotiate a substantive deal to end the war in Gaza.

Yet even as the extension was announced just minutes before a previous truce was set to expire at midnight, violence spiked, with Palestinian militants firing five rockets at Israel and Israel targeting sites across the Gaza Strip in response. It was not clear if the fighting was isolated or might shatter the truce.

cease-fire for five days,” said Azzam al-Ahmad, the head of the Palestinian delegation to the Cairo talks. He noted that there had been “significant progress” but that disagreements remained over the wording regarding security arrangements, reconstruction efforts for the Gaza Strip

and the permissible fishing area.

The lull in violence had been a welcome reprieve for Israelis and Palestinians living in Gaza. During the temporary cease-fire, Israel halted military operations in the war-battered coastal territory and Gaza militants stopped firing rockets, aside from the ones late Wednesday.

The two sides were considering an Egyptian proposal that partially addresses their demands, but deep differences have kept the deal in doubt.

Hamas is seeking an end to a crippling blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt in 2007. The blockade has greatly limited the movement of Palestinians in and out of the territory of 1.8 million people. It also has restricted the flow of goods into Gaza and blocked virtually all exports.

A spokeswoman for the U.N.’s human rights office, Cecile Pouilly, said the organization’s “very conservative estimates” show the overall death toll has risen to at least 2,086 people as of Aug. 10, up from 1,129 on July 26.

Pouilly said at least 4,953 others have been wounded in

the fighting since mid-April.

While the humanitarian crisis reaches critical stage in at least one major Ukrainian city, trucks apparently carrying some 2,000 tons of aid have lain idle at a military depot in Russia.

Moscow insists it coordinated the dispatch of the goods, which range from baby food and canned meat to porta-

ble generators and sleeping bags, with the international Red Cross, but Ukraine says it’s worried the mission may be a cover for an invasion.

A spokesman for local authorities in the main rebel-controlled city of Donetsk told The Associated Press on Wednesday that rocket attacks over the previous night had intensified.

Doctors: Ebola drug dilemma ‘impossible’

By SARAH DiLORENZO and MARIA CHENG The Associated Press DAKAR, Senegal – Doctors treating a Sierra Leone physician with Ebola defended their decision not to give him an experimental drug, saying Wednesday they feared it was too risky.

Calling it “an impossible dilemma,” Doctors Without Borders explained in detail last month’s decision in response to a New York Times story on the case. It would have been the first time the experimental drug was tried in humans.

The explanation came the same day that another top doctor from Sierra Leone died of the disease, further fueling a debate about how to apportion a limited supply of untested drugs and vaccines and whether they are even effective.

Ebola has killed more than 1,000 people and sickened nearly 2,000 in the current West African outbreak that also has hit Guinea, Liberia and Nigeria. Many of the dead are health workers, who are often working with inadequate supplies and protection.

At the time that the experimental treatment was being considered for Dr. Sheik Humarr Khan, his immune system already was starting to produce antibodies suggesting he might recover, Doctors Without Borders said in the statement. Khan also was due to be transferred to a European hospital that would be more capable of handling problems that might arise, it said.

The experimental drug, ZMapp, is designed to boost the immune system to help it fight the virus. Since Khan’s body already was producing an immune response, the doctors may have feared that any boost would kick it into overdrive.

Shortly after their decision, however, Khan’s condition worsened, the statement said, and the company providing the medical evacuation decided not to transfer him. He died a few days later, on July 29.

Debt still a problem for many in U.S. Recent reports reveal that credit card balances are at their lowest level in a decade, a good sign that Americans either have more money at the end of the month or are beginning to realize that paying 20 percent interest on yesterday’s purchase isn’t great financial planning.

But the problem with debt is far from over, as a new study from the Urban Institute shows. More than 35 percent of Americans have been reported to credit agencies for unpaid debts, according to the institute. Certainly some of those involve debts that are in dispute, but most are bills that Americans can’t or won’t pay.

The average debt, including home mortgages, for those living in Illinois ($53,353), Missouri ($47,214) and Iowa ($46,626) ranks below the national average of $53,850. The study shows that the percentage of adults with debt in collection in west-central Illinois, northeast Missouri and southeast Iowa ranks near the bottom nationally – generally at 8.1 percent or lower– so the problem isn’t particularly acute here, but it does exist.

The South and West are the biggest trouble spots. Credit is no less available in poorer areas of the country, but it comes with higher interest rates and more penalizing terms.

And the problem is a serious one. Being reported to a collection agency can have negative consequences on more than a person’s credit score. It can affect whether someone gets a job or qualifies for housing or student loans.

Many of these debts are tied to medical bills. Older people and even younger people in poor health find themselves with crippling hospital bills that they simply can’t keep up with.

The fact that people are managing their consumer credit better is a positive sign that collection activities could decline over time. That depends, of course, on a strong economy and an improved job market with better wages for poorer Americans.

However, wages have barely kept up with inflation during the five-year recovery since mid-2009 from the Great Recession, according to Labor Department figures.

A separate measure by Wells Fargo found that after-tax income fell for the bottom 20 percent of earners during the same period.

What that leaves us with is that there are no clear answers to this debt problem, but it is paramount that it be addressed.

By MIKE FITZGERALD Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Starting pitching has been an issue this season for the Slammers, and Wednesday was no exception as the streaking Lake Erie Crushers beat Joliet, 9-3, in front of 849 fans at Silver Cross Field.

Slammers’ starters entered Wednesday’s game with a 13-32 record and a 5.45 ERA. Left-hander Matt Crim made the start against the Crushers with a 1-2 record and a 6.00 ERA. Lake Erie (44-32), winners of six straight, struck early and often. Craig Hertler and Emmanuel Quiles started the game with back-to-back singles. Crim balked them to second and third. Anderson Hidalgo’s sacrifice fly to right scored Hertler to give Lake Erie the 1-0 lead.

In the second inning, Crim (1-3) walked Adam Ford and Trevor Stevens and an error allowed Ryan Hutchinson to reach base to load the bases for Hertler. He crushed a Crim fastball over the rightfield fence for a grand slam, his second homer of the season, and a 5-0 lead.

The third inning was no kinder to Crim as he gave up a one-out single to Juan Sanchez, an RBI triple to Vincent Mejia and an RBI single to Ford to make it 7-0.

Crim pitched a scoreless fourth inning but was lifted for right-handed reliever Jordan Wellander to start the fifth inning. Crim’s pitching line was four innings pitched, six hits, seven earned runs, two strikeouts and three walks.

Wellander pitched a scoreless fifth before giving way to Kody McFarland. He threw two shutout innings. Andrew Strenge came on to pitch the eighth inning for Joliet. He struck out the side. Tyler Thicke pitched the ninth, giving up two runs.

The Slammers (29-48), losers of three straight, are 11-32 when allowing the first run in a game.

Throughout the baseball season, we have updated you on how our Joliet-area products are doing in pro ball.

Without being able to see them live very often, if at all, we are left to gather whatever stats are available on a given player and perhaps find a comment their manager or coach might have made about him.

What we usually cannot determine definitively is whether an organization feels that player has a future in the big leagues some day. Even if you interview an organization’s brass, they probably would be unwilling to commit one way or the other.

So, we are left with what we do know and present that to you.

No need to be concerned about Tanner Roark (Wilmington) anymore, because he has made the big time. The right-hander is continuing to pitch well in the Washington Nationals’ rotation, sporting an 11-7 record with a 2.86 ERA. He always works at least six innings and may help the Nationals to a playoff berth before it’s over.

Pitcher Mike Foltynewicz (Minooka) had a 5.08 ERA in Triple-A when the Houston Astros called him up recently. That statistic might have suggested he was not quite ready for the bigs, but the Astros had reasons they felt it was his time.

Foltynewicz allowed two home runs in the ninth inning Tuesday in a one-sided victory over Minnesota as his big-league ERA rose to 9.64 in four-plus innings.

No matter. He is getting his feet wet. His heater, which can reach 100 mph, and mound presence tell the Astros he has a promising future – something they have suspected since drafting him

in the first round in 2010.

Five-tool outfielder Joe Benson (Joliet Catholic) endured some injury issues after making his major league debut with Minnesota in September 2011.

Now at Double-A Jacksonville in the Miami organization, Benson was striking out a lot early this season. However, he is making considerably more contact in the last month. He now is hitting .253, with 29 of his 91 hits for extra bases, and he may setting himself up for another shot in the big leagues.

Sam Travis (Providence) was Boston’s second-round pick this year out of Indiana.

He recently was promoted to Single-A Greenville and is hitting .350 (14 for 40) there with five doubles, a home run and five RBIs. Watch for him to continue rising in the organization, with sights set on peppering the Green Monster some day.

Zach Petrick (Morris, Joliet Junior College) at Triple-A Memphis in the St. Louis organization and Tony Bucciferro (Minooka) at Double-A Birmingham in the White Sox system do not have outstanding numbers. However, both have made quality starts at their present stops and are showing they can provide innings and avoid walks.

Those qualities may serve them well as they bid for their shot in the big leagues.

5 players to watch on ‘D’ vs. Jags

By HUB ARKUSH harkush@chicagofootball.com There are very few guarantees in the NFL, but one of the rare ones is if the Bears defense doesn’t make significant improvement in 2014, it will once again be an 8-8 team, or worse.

While the belief that things will be better on “D” in Chicago is rampant due to a huge influx of veteran free agents and the use of four of their first five picks in the draft on defense, we’ve received no proof so far this preseason.

The Bears’ second preseason game against Jacksonville could offer some comfort. Here are five key players to watch: 1. Will Sutton: Veterans Jared Allen and Jeremiah Ratliff may bring stability and occasional playmaking impact, but at best both are well down the home stretch of their careers.

Sutton looked to me to be the best three-technique tackle in this year’s draft and could make a huge impact sharing time at the three with Ratliff if

he’s NFL ready. I’ve seen the lightning first step in Bourbonnais that might make him a disruptive force in opposing teams’ backfields, but now it’s time to see it in an NFL game against at least second-team competition, if not the ones.

2. Jon Bostic: Bostic was having an excellent training camp until the first preseason game against the Eagles, when he appeared to have forgotten everything he’d learned during the offseason. His natural position is weakside linebacker, which he will not get a crack at as long as Lance Briggs is a Bear. But he will be on the field with Briggs whenever the Bears are in the “nickel”; and he needs to make some plays against the Jags, or at least be in the right place at the right time a lot more than he was as a rookie or in the Eagles game.

3. Christian Jones: It’s difficult to project an undrafted rookie free agent even making the team, let alone earning meaningful playing time, but Jones is the only true natural strongside linebacker on the

4. Adrian Wilson: With all the veteran safeties the Bears have in camp, we know Wilson is the only one who can actually move the needle on this defense if he has anything left.

The Bears need to know sooner rather than later to help sort out the rest of the group.

5. Brock Vereen: After running with the 1s through most of the offseason OTAs and minicamp, Vereen was demoted early in camp and it’s not really clear why. The Bears said it was to see how he’d handle adversity. Apparently not so well, since he hasn’t been back with the 1s since. All of the vets at safety are career journeymen, with the exception of Wilson. If Vereen can’t play Robin to Wilson’s Batman, it’s unlikely the Bears will take a meaningful step forward at the position.

LEWIS HONORS Men’s volleyball: Lewis was one of seven NCAA men’s teams in the nation to receive the 2013-14 American Volleyball Coaches Association’s Team Academic Award.

By ANTONIO GONZALEZ The Associated Press SAN FRANCISCO – Depending on the clubhouse, the response to the latest overturned call at home under baseball’s expanded replay system was as debatable as the rule itself.

The Giants scored seven runs in the seventh inning after the replay official overturned an out call at home because they said Sox catcher Tyler Flowers illegally blocked Gregor Blanco’s path to the plate, and San Francisco went on to beat the Sox, 7-1, Wednesday.

“We’ll take it,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

With one out in the inning, first baseman Jose Abreu fielded Joe Panik’s broken-bat grounder to

throw out Blanco by at least six feet. Bochy challenged the play, and umpires ruled Flowers’ left leg was illegally blocking the plate before the ball arrived.

Sox manager Robin Ventura argued the call and was immediately ejected, setting off an epic protest in which he repeatedly kicked dirt on the plate.

“If you look at the spirit of the rule of what they are trying to do and what it’s actually doing it’s a joke,” said Ventura, who unsuccessfully challenged a similar call at the plate in the Sox’s 3-2 win Tuesday night in San Francisco. “They don’t take into consideration that the guy was out by a longshot.”

San Francisco snapped a five-game losing streak as Jake Peavy (1-3) won for

the first time since April 25 with Boston. Peavy had lost 12 consecutive decisions, the longest skid of his career.

Peavy’s friend and former Sox teammate, Jose Quintana (6-9), took the loss.

“Catching those breaks, feels like I haven’t caught one on my day with any team I’ve pitched for,” Peavy said.

Adam Dunn hit his 19th homer of the season into McCovey Cove in the fourth for the Sox’s only run. It was one of just four hits Peavy allowed in seven innings.

Peavy even changed his uniform number from 43 to 22, which he wore for his high school in Mobile, Alabama. He wore 44 with the San Diego Padres, White Sox and Boston Red Sox.

If Courtney Peterson, 18, of Minooka doesn’t raise that amount by Monday, she won’t be able to spend nine months ministering to the people in the Philippines, Swaziland and Nicaragua.

It’s part of The World Race, an extended mission trip to 11 countries in 11 months to serve the poor, according to www.theworldrace.org. Courtney has signed up for the September 2014 Gap Year program for young adults age 18 to 22, a modified program with fewer countries and less time away.

She plans to blog about her experiences until she returns in May 2015.

Since the beginning of 2014, Courtney has raised $12,487, a combination of her own funds and money people have donated to her. In addition to the $2,150, Courtney also needs another $1,000 – for airfare as well as immunizations, since her health insurance won’t cover them, she said.

Although Courtney is racing against time, she is not worried or anxious.

“If the Lord is calling me to do something, he will provide for it – on his time, not my time,” Courtney said.

Courtney, whose career goal is to be an international missionary doctor, realized when researching colleges and finding none appealing to her that God was calling her to a different educational timeline.

While researching different gap year ideas, Courtney found The World Race. Although she did receive the blessing and support of both her parents – Chris Peterson of Minooka and Eric Peterson of Shorewood – Courtney said she would participate even if she did not have it.

However, to prove her sincerity and dedication, Courtney said she assembled a presentation for her father, outlining the trip’s details and her reasons for pursuing it. He responded by contributing some of her college fund and admiring the extremely driven young woman she has grown to be, he said.

“She is already doing everything she can to accomplish her goals at 18,” Eric said. “As a woman, she’ll be able to accomplish anything she wants in life.”

Chris wavered between feeling proud of her daughter – she bought $1,500 in supplies for the upcoming mission trip – and fearful for her safety. When Courtney was in Uganda last year, she was close enough to the South Sudan border to hear guns shooting. Chris said.

Still, Chris said, the entire experience enhanced Courtney’s naturally kind and caring nature.

“She saw malnutrition and starvation. It opened up her eyes to experience unlike anything she had experienced,” Chris said. “It gave her a greater appreciation of things and made her want to help people more.”

Attendees had the opportunity to keep a rosary for themselves and donate the extra rosaries to the Legion

of Mary. The Legion will share those rosaries when they go door to door evangelizing. The next rosary making class will be Oct. 18 in conjunction with St. Mary’s “Make a Difference Day.” The Legion of Mary also coordinates the Pilgrim Virgin program. This program allows people to host the statue of Our Lady in their homes for one week.

The Legion aims to bring Mary to the world as the infallible means of winning the world to Jesus.

While the pope is expected to reach out to Pyonyang during the visit, no North Koreans are expected to attend. The archdiocese of Seoul invited a delegation of Northern Christians, but Pyongyang authorities informed organizers last week that they wouldn’t come, the Vatican said.

Why Asia? Francis himself has said he must go because Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI never managed to get there during his eightyear pontificate. But more to the point, Asia is the future of the Catholic Church.

Despite being a minority religion in every Asian nation except the Philippines, the Catholic Church baptizes more Catholics in Asia every year than in traditionally Christian Europe, according to Vatican statistics. In 2001 there were 44,446 priests in Asia; by 2012 the number had soared to 60,042. While

Africa saw a similar surge in vocations, the number of Europe’s priests shrank from 206,761 to 186,489 in the same timeframe.

St. John Paul II said on several occasions that while Christianity was sowed in Europe in the first millennium and in the Americas and Africa in the second, the third millennium belonged to Asia.

“The pope wants to refresh the evangelization of Asia, which was a major theme that John Paul II had very much in his heart,” said the Rev. Bernardo Cervellera, head of the Vatican-affiliated missionary news agency AsiaNews. “Going to meet the young people of Asia means to go find the future of Asia.”

What should West lead against four spades?

When the opponents are cruising toward a game or slam, pay attention. In particular, work out how many points each player has. And sometimes you will also know the distribution of at least one opponent’s hand -- as in this deal.

ADVICE Wife under pressure from spouse to drink Dear Abby: I’m not much of a drinker. I have nothing against drinking or those who do. I just do not like the taste of alcohol. Worse, I have a very low tolerance for it. After only half a glass of wine, I become sleepy. It makes me feel physically awful.

My husband takes offense to the fact that I don’t want to drink. When we’re out with friends, he’ll have three or four beers and pressure me to the point of embarrassment in front of them until I finally give in and order a glass of wine. Of course, I then spend the rest of the evening feeling terrible.

When we get home, he’ll want to be intimate, but I just want to go to sleep, which aggravates him further.

I have tried for several years to discuss this with him, but he can’t explain why he does this.

Dear Abby: My best friend, “Cecily,” has just come out to me as being a lesbian. We are both 15. I have tried my best to make her feel accepted and comfortable. But whenever she wants something from me and I refuse, she says I’m “treating her badly because she’s gay.”

I let it go the first couple of times, but now she does this every time she wants something.

When I finally confronted her about it, she went to her mother

and said I was bullying her because of her being gay. Her mother yelled at me and told me to “get my act together or get out of her life.” Her mother is like a second mother to me.

Other than this, Cecily has been a great friend. Abby, I have tried everything. Consider asking your mother to talk to Cecily’s mother and explain that you’re not homophobic but feel her daughter is being manipulative. If the woman hears it from another adult, she may talk to her daughter about it. However, if that doesn’t work, you may have to decide if it’s worth it to continue the relationship.

Many services, resources available to care for ailing patients Dear Doctor K: I’m a working mother. I also care for my ill and aging father. Are there professionals or services that can help me care for him?

Dear Reader: There can be plenty of rewards in caring for an ailing parent. I’ve had many patients and friends who have told me that they got closer to their parents in the process of caring for them.

However, that care takes a toll, especially when you’re also juggling other responsibilities. Here are some services and professionals you might want to look into.

• Adult day services offer a variety of programs. They may include transportation, nursing care, meals, personal care (such as help with bathing or toilet use), social opportunities or rehabilitation.

• Certified nurse’s aides can help with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing and personal care. They cannot administer medications.

• Home health aides may administer medications. They also perform personal services such as

• Nurses offer skilled nursing care, such as inserting IV lines, cleaning wounds and changing bandages. They can also administer medications.

• Hired companions and homemakers. You can hire someone who is not a trained medical professional to help with meals, shopping and laundry. This person can provide companionship.

• Meal programs. Your father may be able to get hot, nutritious meals brought to the home through programs like the Meals on Wheels (www.mowaa.org).

• Case managers coordinate services and help manage red tape. They can also communicate information between patient, caregiver, family and physicians.

• Physical, occupational or speech therapists may do in-home therapy sessions.

• Respite care workers provide caregivers with time off from their caregiving duties.

• Transportation services.

Some communities, religious and community organizations and senior centers offer free or low-cost transportation to medical appointments for seniors or people who are disabled.

There are more support services for ailing older people today in the U.S. than when I went to medical school. It surprises me how many of my patients don’t know of this, and how many doctors don’t refer their patients to these services.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ website, www.healthfinder.gov, may be able to refer you to services in your community. Ask your father’s doctor about other resources in your community.

Take the teen drug use quiz Dr. Wallace: When my wife and I divorced two years ago, she received custody of our then-10year-old daughter and our then-14-year-old son.

Our daughter is now 12, and our son is now 16 years old.

Six weeks before school was out, Eric and his friends were caught lighting a fire in the boys’ restroom. He was expelled for the remainder of the school year.

His mother was at wit’s end and called and asked me if our son could live with my wife and me. She felt this was a good idea to separate him from his delinquent friends. I love my son, and my wife and I agreed to take him in and enroll him in our local school for the remainder of the school year and then for summer school so he could adjust to the new school and make new friends.

He seemed relieved that he had a new chance and started out doing really well.

Then lately he has been hanging out with some unsavory-looking guys and his grades are not as good as they should be although he has good intelligence.

My wife and I have discussed this, and she thinks that he might be doing drugs. When I confronted him with this possibility, he said that he is drug-free. He could be telling the truth, and we have searched his bedroom several times and we haven’t found any drug evidence but we are still worried.

Since we are not up on what to look for exactly to determine if a teen is doing drugs, we thought you could tell us what to look for. We would appreciate your help, and I’m sure there are other parents who

Jazz might be easy to mock, but it’s music that still matters

By DAVE MOONEY Special to The Washington Post NEW ORLEANS — When I was 16, I enthusiastically confessed to my guitar teacher that I wanted to become a professional jazz musician.

After the lesson, he told my mother: “Don’t let him do it.

He’ll be doomed to a life of frustration.”

I didn’t listen.

In the 20 years since that afternoon, I have definitely experienced that frustration.

But it doesn’t define my life, and I hardly feel “doomed” to it. The jazz sub-culture is alive and, if not exactly well, as determined as ever to stay alive. We know that what we do is valid, even important, in the way that any art form is important. It is a creative act rather than a destructive one, and that makes it a valid human endeavor.

Yes, our work is underappreciated and poorly remunerated at times. That’s OK; we knew what we were getting into. Nobody lied to us about fame and fortune when we were young. We’re chasing a peak experience: When we improvise and everything comes together, when it falls perfectly into place, there’s nothing like it.

It’s otherworldly. We’re happy to share this with you, but if you’re not interested, that’s OK too! We’ll keep playing.

And sometimes things turn out beautifully. As I finished a tour of Japan last week, I felt great. The gigs had been wonderful, the audiences enthusiastic, and everywhere I went in Japan – bars, shopping malls, coffee shops – I heard jazz. (Everywhere except Starbucks, anyway.)

The scolds of the world mean well, and they are very sensible in their bitterness.

In it, a comedian pretending to be Sonny Rollins laments, “in his own words,” his choice to become a jazz musician. The piece was not funny; it was deeply negative, nihilistic even. It ended with “Sonny” declaring: “I hate music. I wasted my life.”

It’s not that jazz musicians lack a sense of humor.

As you’d expect, we have a pitch-perfect gallows sensibility, honed over a century’s worth of badly paid gigs and lack of respect from the monoculture. Jazz musicians are the funniest people I know. But why was The New Yorker so hostile to the jazz community? It upset many of us.

The real Sonny Rollins’s online response brought me back from the brink. Every aspiring artist, musician and creatively minded person should watch it and glean some wisdom and encourage-

Then, between sets on a Friday night gig, I saw an article in The Washington Post called “All that jazz isn’t all that great” in which the author lists five reasons why he thinks jazz is “insubstantial and hard to grasp.”

He begins this way: “Jazz is boring. Jazz is overrated.

Jazz is washed up.” What was going on? The author, Justin Moyer, doesn’t like jazz, that much is clear. Perhaps he prefers Big Freedia to Wes Montgomery; that’s a perfectly valid choice. But had August been declared national Kick-a-Jazz-Musicianin-the-Teeth Month while I was away?

Here’s the thing: Jazz has certainly not stopped evolving, as Moyer argues. When I graduated from the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (a performing arts high school) in 1998, I sounded like

Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, Steve Masakowski and Pat Martino, with a bit of “Question and Answer”-era Pat Metheny thrown in. Since then, one of the greatest frustrations (and sometimes joys) of my career has been constantly returning to the proverbial “woodshed” to deal with all the innovation in the music since then.

On my instrument alone, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Peter Bernstein and Ben Monder (among many others) have taken music to new places.

The rhythmic and metric world of jazz has moved light years beyond 4/4 time, aided by “Black Codes”-era Wynton Marsalis, the Brad Mehldau trio and others too numerous to mention; the music of Brian Blade and Jon Cowherd in the Brian Blade Fellowship has incorporated harmony from the most sophisticated pop music as well as the spirit of the sanctified church.

Keeping up with all the innovation in jazz can feel like an exercise in futility.

It’s exponential!

If there is a sin that we’ve committed, it’s a sin against the market. By choosing to spend our lives playing music that isn’t easily branded or marketed, we confuse the mainstream. Jazz, at its best, is artistic entertainment – not as heady as 21st century classical music, but more esoteric and sophisticated than your average pop tune.

Pop is a commodity; jazz is artisanal. People around the world understand and appreciate its place on the spectrum of musical art and entertainment, but Americans have trouble with us.
