Prosecution rests in McKee murder trial Defense begins their case with Massaro video

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – As prosecutors rested their case Monday in the murder trial of Bethany McKee, her attorneys began their case by playing the videotaped interview of another suspect.

by Joliet Police Bethany Detectives Car- McKee los Matlock and Tom Ponce.

Massaro began by stating she “didn’t know” what happened in her house on Jan. 9 and 10, 2013, and asked for a lawyer. After being left alone for a few minutes, Massaro changed her mind and asked to speak to the detectives again, according to the video.

As Massaro appears to reconsider again, the detectives tell her that McKee and the other suspects, Joshua Miner and Adam Landerman, are all cooperating with other investigators and take her outside the room to watch the camera feeds.

McKee is charged with murder for allegedly luring Eric Glover and Terrence Rankins on Jan. 9, 2013, to Massaro’s residence in the 1100 block of North Hickory Street.

Glover and Rankins, both 22, were allegedly killed by Miner and Landerman as part of a robbery.

All four suspects were charged with murder, but Massaro pleaded guilty to lesser charges in exchange

for testifying against the others. Landerman and Miner are awaiting separate trials.

On the video, Massaro initially tells Matlock and Ponce several times her memory is bad and indicates Glover and Rankins were trying to grope her while Landerman and Miner were too involved playing video games to notice.

Massaro testified last week the victims did not try to assault her.

“They just showed up and ... it went real bad,” Massaro states later in the video. She tells investigators she heard someone saying, “Why are you doing this? What did I do,” as she and McKee went downstairs while the four men were in her apartment.

Bethany McKee identified Rankins as saying the same thing during her police interview.

When Massaro returned upstairs she saw blood and “freaked out,” she told the detectives on the recording.

“I have a tendency to be on the weird side, but that was too much,” she said.

“I’m almost positive [Miner and Landerman] knew in their minds they did something wrong, [but there] was nothing they could do,” Massaro said later.

After a break in the interview, Matlock tells Massaro that Miner told police they’d had sex after the killings and attempted to destroy the victims’ cellphones with water and a cigarette lighter.

Massaro said all four suspects talked about cutting up the bodies and dumping them in a body of water, on the recording of the interview.

Massaro’s interview with the detectives lasted more

than three hours. The second part is set to be played in court Tuesday.

The final witness to testify for the prosecution Monday was Dr. Valerie Arangelovich, a forensic pathologist who performed the autopsies of Glover and Rankins.

Arangelovich said both men were strangled to death in a similar manner.

Arangelovich noted Rankins had a one-inch cut on his head and blunt force trauma on his scalp while Glover had trauma to his head and chest. The autopsy was unable to determine if those injuries were inflicted before or after they were strangled, Arangelovich said.

“With constant pressure [on the neck] it takes 10 to 30 seconds to lose consciousness [and] three-and-a-half to six minutes of constant pressure to cause irreversible brain damage leading to death,” Arangelovich said.

The pathologist testified neither victim showed defensive wounds on their hands to indicate they were able to fight back against their attacker.

Forensic lab analysts examined Bethany McKee’s shoes, sweatshirt, shirt and pants and found no bloodstains on any item, according to the state police reports admitted as evidence by both sides.

Bloodstains were found on Alisa Massaro’s shoes and pants, with DNA identification links to Terrence Rankins. The lab also found a bloodstain on Massaro’s pants that is not from McKee or Miner, but could be from Rankins, Glover or Landerman.

West Nile Virus identified BOLINGBROOK – Mosquito samples collected from a monitoring site in Bolingbrook on Aug. 5 tested positive for West Nile Virus on Wednesday, the Will County Health Department said.

Eight mosquito samples have tested positive for West Nile Virus in Will County this summer.

In Illinois, there have been 34 positive samples of West Nile Virus. But no West Nile Virus infections have been identified in humans in Illinois this year, the Health Department said.

Suicide gun connected to double-homicide

showed the two women died from gunshot wounds.

The weapon was recovered at the scene where Sipple took his life. The gun came from a Morris home police allege Sipple burglarized in May. When asked whether Monday’s confirmation that the same gun was used in both Sipple’s suicide and the double murder points to Sipple as the person responsible, Henson said police are “not to that point” in the investigation.

Ties to Morris burglary In early May, Morris police responded to a call of a residential burglary on Jodi Court. Officers discovered firearms, jewelry, clothing and electronic goods were stolen, Morris Police Chief Brent Dite said Monday.

Morris police called in the Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigation Unit to help process the scene.

“During the investigation, Joseph Sipple was identified as a person of interest in the investigation through a number of sources,” Dite said.

Dwight homicide victims Donna J. Denker, 60, and her daughter Kelli L. Denker, 30, were killed June 14 in their home and autopsies showed they died from gunshot wounds. Police have confirmed the weapon Joseph Sipple used to kill himself in Sheridan recently is the same weapon used to kill the two Dwight women.

Sheriff’s Department, Dwight and state police to obtain a search warrant for where Sipple was staying in Sheridan, Dite said. The warrant was executed June 25.

The investigation also has

shown Sipple was involved in a residential burglary of the Denker house in Dwight in August 2013. In that incident, a large sum of money was taken from the home, but no one was injured and no weapons

were used, Henson said Monday.

Father, son charged in connection to man’s death

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – A 42-yearold man and his teenage son have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of a 55-year-old Romeoville man that is being investigated as a homicide.

Richard Pollack, 55, of Romeoville, was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m. Sunday at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital and “appears to be the victim

of a homicide,” a deputy coroner reported.

Mark Ballard, 42, of the 300 block of Healy Avenue Mark in Romeoville, Ballard is charged with one count of first-degree murder for striking Pollack in the head with a bat, Will County State’s Attorney spokesman Charles Pelkie said.

Adam Ballard of Romeoville, is automatically charged with first-degree murder as an adult in addition to two counts of juvenile aggravated battery.

Mark Ballard is being held on $5 million bond and Adam Ballard is being held on $1 million bond, Pelkie said.

According to a news release from Romeoville police sent Monday afternoon, an unreported burglary to a motor vehicle and an ongoing dispute over property in previous days was the catalyst that led

to Pollack’s death.

About 2 a.m. Sunday, Romeoville police responded to a call of a large fight in progress on the 400 block of Tallman Avenue. At least nine individuals were involved with the fight, some carrying baseball bats.

Officers arrived to find Pollack seriously injured. He was transported to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Mark and Adam Ballard were located in the area and

taken into custody, Turvey said.

A previous news release from the department says police “want[ed] to reassure the public that there is no public safety risk due to this incident. The case is an isolated incident.”

Members of Pollack’s family declined to comment Monday.

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A sinking tugboat that has been leaking diesel fuel into the Des Plaines River is now the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s responsibility.

The EPA will oversee the boat’s removal, as well as clean up any fuel that spilled into the river, said Kim Biggs, Illinois EPA spokeswoman.

“They have funds to take care of the cleanup,” Biggs said. “They will have the slick removed, as well as remove the boat from the water.”

Joliet firefighters were alerted to the leak last week by the Coast Guard, after a bridge tender noticed an oily sheen on the water extending from near the Jackson Street Bridge to Brandon Road.

The source was identified Thursday as a tugboat moored near the bridge since 1987. The boat, which is about 30 feet long and partially submerged, was being salvaged, according to

The incident was a bit out of the ordinary for firefighters,

who were called out to inspect the vessel by boat, Lt. Bob Rosado said.

“It’s the first time we’ve been called out on something like this,” Rosado said.

After halting salvage operations, firefighters placed booms around the tugboat to contain the spill.

Since the boat sat unused for so long and is not registered as a working vessel, the spill falls under the EPA’s jurisdiction instead of the Coast Guard.

While the spill has created a fuel odor in the area around the boat, there are no immediate health concerns, since that part of the river is not used for swimming or recreation, Will County Emergency Management Director Harold Damron said.

Woman shot during robbery of Bolingbrook bank

By RYAN TERRELL rterrell@shawmedia.com BOLINGBROOK – Bolingbrook police are searching for a man who reportedly shot a woman during an armed robbery about noon Monday at the Bolingbrook First Midwest Bank.

Police are looking for a black man in his early 20s, about 6-foot, 190 pounds, and wearing jeans, a black hoodie, a red hat and a black bandana with white markings. He was last seen wearing a mask leaving on foot in an unknown direction from the bank, 450 N. Bolingbrook Drive.

The woman, a bank employee, was shot in the arm and transported to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, said Bolingbrook Lt. Mike Rompa.

Her injuries were not believed to be serious, according to Joan Hyde, a spokeswoman for the FBI’s Chicago office. The FBI is handling the investigation.

Kyle, who declined to provide his last name, told Shaw Media he was in the bank’s drive-thru when the robbery occurred.

He said that, through the drive-thru window, he saw a girl duck down. He went inside to see if everyone was OK. “That probably was not the smartest idea,” he said, adding that by then the suspect had fled.

Alderman arrested for DUI in Joliet

Regional Office of Education to fill vacancy

By CHRISTINA CHAPMAN–VAN YPEREN cchapman@shawmedia.com MORRIS – Alderman Brian E. Feeney is scheduled to be back in Will County court Aug. 28 for a hearing related to his aggravated driving under the influence arrest last week by Joliet police.

Feeney, 54, of the 800 block of North Street in Morris, was arrested Wednesday by Joliet police and booked into the Will County Detention Facility.

According to the Will County online circuit court records, Feeney has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence, a class 2 felony.

He also is being cited for two counts of improper lane usage and failure to make notification when causing damage to

an unattended vehicle.

He is out on bond, which was set at $25,000; he needed to post 10 percent to be released from jail.

Feeney said Monday he had no comment on his arrest.

Alderman Feeney represents the Brian E. Third Ward in Morris. He reFeeney turned to the council last October by appointment to fill former Alderman Barry Aldrich’s position, who resigned because she was moving out of the ward.

Mayor Richard Kopczick said Monday he did not have any comment regarding the incident at this time since he had limited information.

City Attorney Scott Belt, who is out of the office for the week, said via email he could not comment since he also had limited information.

Before the most recent appointment, Feeney was on the council for 16 years, but did not seek re-election in 2007 because of a new job. But in 2008, another alderman resigned and Feeney was appointed to finish that term. In 2009, he lost the election to former Alderman Drew Muffler in a close race.

In between stints on the council, Feeney was arrested for DUI in July 2010 by Illinois State Police. He was not an alderman at the time. He was sentenced to 24 months supervision, fined and ordered to attend counseling, the Victim Impact Panel as well as DUI school.

NEW LENOX – The Will County Regional Office of Education is accepting letters of interest to fill a vacant seat on the Regional Board of School Trustees.

The regional board now has members from Frankfort, Homer, Jackson, DuPage and Plainfield townships. Citizens who reside within any of these five townships are not eligible.

Candidates must be a voter of the educational service region; must be qualified to vote in the election for members of the Regional Board of School Trustees; cannot be a member of a school board or a school board employee; and cannot hold a county office.

The selected candidate will remain on the Regional Board of Trustees until the April 2015 election. The Regional Board of School Trustees meets quarterly, with special meetings held when necessary.

A letter of interest will be accepted through Aug. 29, and

Bat found in Wilmington tests positive for rabies WILMINGTON – A bat trapped in a Wilmington garage has become the fourth wildlife rabies case this year, the Will County Health Department reported.

A puppy trapped the bat. The puppy was found with the bat in its mouth on Aug. 6, the Health Department said in a news release. Because the puppy had not yet received its first rabies vaccination, all three dogs living on the property will be subject to home observation for six months. The Health Department also has recommended that two adults living on the site in the 200 block of Kankakee Street receive post exposure rabies prophylaxis.

Three other rabid bats have been found since May in Joliet, Braidwood and Wilmington.

Another man, who has yet to be identified, was shot during the June 14 killings but survived. The man provided emergency medical personnel a description of the shooter at the time of the murders but “did not know the shooter,”

JOLIET – The Joliet Park District will place a $19.5 million referendum on the Nov. 4 ballot for a multitude of projects, including renovation of 23 area parks, construction of an East Side activity center and resurfacing of roads and trails at Pilcher Park.

The Joliet Park Board unanimously approved the measure at a special board meeting Monday at Inwood Recreational Center.

Notably absent from the proposal is a second sheet of ice at Inwood Recreational Center, a proposal opposed by more than a fifth of the district residents surveyed about the plan.

“I think we’ve done our due diligence,” said Dominic Egizio, the district’s executive director. “We listened to what the citizens of Joliet have said.”

Funding will require raising the district tax rate about $20.50 a year on a home valued at $100,000. The original $20.9 million proposal would have

cost taxpayers about $21.60 a year on a home valued at $100,000.

If the measure is approved, the district’s priority will be to improve roads and trails at Pilcher Park and improve playgrounds, followed by upgrading security, Egizio said.

Two additional playgrounds – Manningdale and Crombie – will be added to the 21 parks already marked for improvements under the proposal, Egizio said.

The district currently upgrades one or two of its 75 playgrounds each year, he noted. Many haven’t been updated since 1991.

“The park district has done a great job putting band-aids on to keep playgrounds going a lot longer than they should have,” Park Board President Glen Marcum said.

Park district surveys indicated that security is another key issue for potential voters, Egizio said. Security primarily would include electronic enhancements, such as license plate readers and security gates.

JOLIET – The signs are good for rental housing in Joliet, which has seen growth in single-family home rentals and declines in foreclosure filings.

Joliet Neighborhood Services Director Alfredo Melesio updated council members on rental housing trends at Thursday’s land use and legislative committee meeting.

Single-family home rentals since 2000 have grown while foreclosure filings have declined.

The latter trend is important to note for Melesio.

“That is significant because the properties you get complaints about – it’s in foreclosure, nobody is taking care of it – we are seeing an upswing in properties that are being taken over by banks and being sold,” he said. “So we’re getting more people back into properties than we have in the past few years.”

Melesio previously discussed rental housing with the Joliet Regional Landlord

Association. He provided them a wish list of the kind of landlords city officials want to invest in the Joliet area.

He said the city seeks landlords who are long-term investors, who understand fair housing and treat rental housing as a small business. Ideal landlords would do background and credit checks and “actually answer the phone when we call them with issues that we have in the community.”

“Most of my time is dealing with landlords that are under-capitalized, that treat [rental housing] as a sort of side business instead of a small business,” he said.

About 37,000 people in the city live in a rental unit. Half of those live in a single-family home, he said. About half of those who rent pay more than 30 percent of their income and the poverty rate is higher in rental markets, he said.

New Lenox OKs tap-on fee changes

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Village officials in New Lenox are changing how water and sanitary sewer tap-on fees are calculated for apartments and multiple-family dwellings.

In 4-1 vote, the village board approved Monday to adjust water and sanitary sewer tapon fees so it is based on the size of the waterline servicing apartment and multi-family dwellings with nine units or more rather than a flat rate per unit, as it was before.

The change would make calculation of the fees the same as it is for commercial and age-restricted senior housing, said Robin Ellis, the village’s community development di-

rector.

“That is a more accurate reflection of the water demand,” she said.

As in the last meeting, Board Trustee David Smith disagreed with the change because he said it was inequitable among residential properties. He was the sole vote against the ordinance at Monday’s meeting.

He said he was worried this proposal would be another incentive to encourage development of multi-family properties in the village. Multi-family properties are easier and cheaper to build, have higher densities and use less land than single-family homes, he said.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Resident Vicky Polito blasted Trustee Garrett Peck at Monday’s village board meeting for allegedly posting a “vulgar, borderline pornographic video” on his personal Facebook page.

“This trustee is an irresponsible deviant,” Polito said to the board in a scathing speech, also calling Peck an “ignorant pervert.” “Village leadership needs to take some kind of public stand on this truly inappropriate behavior from one of their own.”

Polito has been a heavy critic of Peck since last year, when he was the executive director of the Plainfield Township Park District.

Trustee Jim Racich said Polito had previously showed him the video, and he was disgusted.

“It is obnoxious. I would not show it to my family,” Racich said. “It graphically displays ... something akin to something

childish and representative.”

Polito said the video has been publicly available for the past several months, expressing concern for children and students who study public officials and use Facebook.

“I really am upset at how this sort of stupid and twisted behavior affects the image of my home, Plainfield,” Polito said.

Peck took down the video from his Facebook page after the meeting.

“I wasn’t even aware of it,” Peck said after the meeting. “I question why she hasn’t contacted me directly. Obviously, there is a political motive to hurt my reputation. If [Polito] was genuinely concerned, she would have contacted me. But she showed up with a camcorder and went public instead.”

Mayor Michael Collins said other trustees haven’t yet reviewed the information Polito revealed.

“We’ll look into it and take our lawyer’s advice and go from there,” Collins said.

The village board voted on several items at the meeting.

Re-zoning and a special use permit were approved for townhomes at Prairie Creek.

The Ryan Homes project is a 149-unit townhome development southwest of the Route 59 and 135th Street Meijer, west of the DuPage River and surrounded by a floodplain..

An initial townhome project was presented to the village board by Ryan Homes on May 19, but it was rejected. The developer came back with plans that had less units and density, and was above the floodplain.

The village board also approved re-zoning 1.68 acres of property adjacent to allow for expansion of the Plainfield Township Cemetery. A special use was also granted to allow the expansion.

A change order of $7,700 for the 135th Street railroad pedestrian crossing project was approved along with $6,850.87 in fleet safety supply for the Plainfield Emergency Management Agency and police department.

be defined as equitable to the amount of water that is expected to be used, she said.

“Then I want a discount,” he said. “I should get some of my tap-on fee back. I don’t water my yard and I don’t use a lot of water.”

Baldermann said to Smith everyone is entitled to their opinion.

“There’s no sense in arguing at this point,” he said.

“What you think is equitable, many of us or staff feel we’re inequitable with what we’re doing now. It’s a matter of opinion on what’s equitable or what’s not equitable.”

When people saw the American dream in the village of Plainfield back in the 1990s, they began to move into the tiny community in droves to take advantage of open land, available housing, low taxes, low crime and good schools.

What followed was unprecedented growth. Administrators in Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 took on the challenge.

The school system went from 5 schools and 3,500 students to 30 schools and just under 30,000 students.

With the growth spurt came socioeconomic and demographic changes, going from 96 percent white to 59 percent white, 10 percent African American and 20 percent Latino.

“We’re very proud of that, Hernandez said. Our kids now live and go to school in a community that looks like the world around them.”

Administration took a proactive approach to the changes

The result was a significant 17 percent increase in state standardized test scores and an increase in ACT scores to 20.4, a record for the district.

“We have a record number of AP scholars, something we’re very, very proud of,” Hernandez said. “We also had 214 Illinois State Scholars last February and record high numbers of AP Scholars and National Merit students.”

The improvements came across the board for all student groups, Hernandez said. “That has a lot to do with the fact that our administration recognized that the community was changing.”

MARY ANN DILLON Mary Ann Dillon (nee Wrona), age 89, of Joliet, was born December 21, 1924, in Joliet, IL the second daughter of Paul and Mary Ann (nee Michon) Wrona. She graduated from St. Thaddeus School where she was the music copyist for the choir. During the Depression, her parents thought they were too poor to provide clothing and fees for high school, but

after two weeks, the truant officer from Joliet Township High School came and assured them that they could help Mary Ann obtain what she needed, and she became enrolled.

Mary Ann worked her way through high school by cleaning the school.

She was involved in the Girls Athletic Association, fencing, golf, and the business preparatory program. One semester, ten people were failing shorthand and the teacher asked Mary Ann to tutor them for a dime per student, one hour each day after school. They all passed.

Mary Ann was the first of her family to graduate high school. After graduating in 1942, she worked briefly for a defense contractor where she handled payroll for 96 employees.

She then worked in Chicago, for Buchen Advertising; W. I. Orwig; and later, her favorite job, the law firm of Burton Y. Witzenfeld, Arnstein, Bluck, Witzenfeld and Minow in Chicago.

On May 10, 1947, Mary Ann married Daniel T. Dillon, Jr., her only true love, who had recently returned from the Pacific. Daniel T. Dillon, III was born July 15, 1948; Mary Ann Dillon was born January, 1952, full term but deceased; Rita L. “Dolly” Dillon was born November 28, 1952, three months prematurely; and Paul M. Dillon was born September 25, 1960.

Daniel, Rita and Paul survive.

In later life, Mary Ann worked at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Joliet, Union Oil, Joliet Junior College, and Argonne Laboratory, where she worked in legal, environmental sciences and a unique library position.

The most interesting for her was working for the Acting Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, where the chairmanship rotated between the five government-affiliated research facilities.

She was very proud of her sons, Dan, the attorney and eventual Judge who graduated from Notre Dame; Paul, the actor and graduate of DePaul (Austin Powers, “Fight Club,” and “Hell Cab,” among others); and Rita, not the academic type, who worked at various legal, social work and insurance transcription jobs.

Mary Ann’s favorite hobbies were gardening, bird watching, and reading. She always told her kids, “If there’s something you believe in, stick to your guns. Don’t let anybody convince you you’re wrong.” This was especially true regarding one child’s passionate belief in the civil rights movement.

Mom battled valiantly against two strokes and partial paralysis, the vascular dementia that tried to crush her spirit, but failed, and the two heart attacks which took her life. Mom was

fiercely independent and never quit trying. She lived a complicated and interesting life, and was always true to her convictions. She loved dancing and music and had a great respect for jazz musicians, her favorite composers being the Gershwins. She and her husband went to Melody Mill and the Aragon back in the day to see all the big bands.

Grateful acknowledgment is extended to the nurses, doctors, restaurant people, pizza delivery people, grocery people, and pharmacists who helped bring joy to Mom’s final years, and to her baby sister, Christine Peterson, and Mary Ann’s son, Paul, who was her primary caregiver from May, 2013 until her death.

A very special thank you goes to Carolyn Schaeffer, a rock of support, and Kevin Etheridge, an awesome purchasing agent.

In addition to her children, Mary Ann is survived by three grandsons and their families, Duffy and Faun Dillon (Attorney and Cincinnati Insurance employee) of Janesville, WI, and their two children, Connor and Finnegan; Brian and Liz Dillon (Attorneys at Law) of Minneapolis, MN, and their children, Ana and James Christopher; and Chris and Kelly Dillon (Emergency Doctor and ER Nurse) of Maple Grove, MN, and their two children, Isabella and Sullivan. She is also survived by ten siblings and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Dave graduated from St. Paul the Apostle School in 1973, Joliet West High School in 1977, and received his degrees in Accounting and in Aviation from the University of Illinois in just three years. He soloed an airplane at the age of 16 and enjoyed flying.

Dave was self-employed for much of his life. Most recently, he worked in lumber sales with his dad at Alexander Lumber and as an appraiser for James V. Smith Appraisals. He was a devoted campaign manager for his father and many other politicians over the years. Dave was a dedicated member of the Rialto Square Theatre board for over 20 years, serving as chairman for 17 years.

Dave will be greatly missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. He was an animal lover and will also be missed by his two dogs, Zach and Zoey, and his cat, Scout. They spent their days keeping him company in his office while he worked.

Robin Williams, manic comedy star, dead at 63 The ASSOCIATED PRESS SAN FRANCISCO – Robin Williams, the Academy Award winner and comic supernova whose explosions of pop culture riffs and impressions dazzled audiences for decades, died Monday in an apparent suicide. He was 63.

Williams was pronounced dead at his home in California on Monday, according to the sheriff’s office in Marin County, north of San Francisco. The sheriff’s office said a preliminary investigation shows the cause of death to be a suicide due to asphyxia.

“This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken,” said Williams’ wife, Susan Schneider. “On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for pri- Robin v a c y d u r i n g Williams our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope the focus will not be on Robin’s death, but on the countless

moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.”

Williams had been battling severe depression recently, said Mara Buxbaum, his press representative.

From his breakthrough in the late 1970s as the alien in the hit TV show “Mork and Mindy,” through his standup act and such films as “Good Morning, Vietnam,” the short, barrel-chested Williams ranted and shouted as if just sprung from solitary confinement. Loud, fast, manic, he parodied everyone from John Wayne to Keith Richards, impersonating a

Russian immigrant as easily as a pack of Nazi attack dogs.

Like so many funnymen, he had serious ambitions, winning his Oscar for his portrayal of an empathetic therapist in “Good Will Hunting.” He also played for tears in “Awakenings,” ‘’Dead Poets Society” and “What Dreams May Come,” something that led New York Times critic Stephen Holden to once say he dreaded seeing the actor’s “Humpty Dumpty grin and crinkly moist eyes.”

Williams also won three Golden Globes, for “Good Morning, Vietnam,” “Mrs.

Doubtfire” and “The Fisher King.”

His personal life was often short on laughter. He had acknowledged drug and alcohol problems in the 1970s and ’80s and was among the last to see John Belushi before the “Saturday Night Live” star died of a drug overdose in 1982.

Williams announced in recent years that he was again drinking but rebounded well enough to joke about it during his recent tour. “I went to rehab in wine country,” he said, “to keep my options open.”

Quinn signs Pace shoulder-riding program into law

CHICAGO – Legislation that allows a suburban Chicago bus agency’s vehicles to ride on the shoulders of a major roadway is now law.

Gov. Pat Quinn signed a plan on Monday that makes Pace’s “Bus on Shoulders” pilot program permanent. Pace bus drivers on two routes that travel on Interstate 55 are able to use shoulders as a passing lane when traffic is moving slower than 35 mph. They’re not allowed to travel more than 15 mph over the top speed of vehicles in the expressway lanes.

The idea is to speed up trips.

The pilot program started in 2011. Pace bus drivers were able to use the newly widened shoulders on the Stevenson Expressway to get around rush hour traffic jams. State officials say on-time performance has greatly improved since then.

Peoria officials relocate woman after retaliation

PEORIA – The Peoria County State’s Attorney’s Office is finding new housing for a 22-year-old woman who has said six women attacked her for helping the office with a case.

The Peoria Journal Star reported police say the woman was attacked Sunday over her involvement in a case, but they aren’t saying which one. She tells police a woman she knew arrived at her apartment early Sunday with five other women.

A police report says they forced their way into the residence and began kicking and punching the woman and choking her friend.

Police say they’re seeking two known suspects among the attackers on charges of aggravated battery, aggravated assault and home invasion.

Illinois concealed carry process getting easier

CARBONDALE – The initial flood of applications for permits to carry concealed weapons in Illinois has slowed down considerably and observers have said the process for those still applying is getting a bit easier to navigate.

According to the Illinois State Police that processes the applications, after the first six weeks of the year in which more than 42,000 applications poured in, it has taken another six months for another 42,000 to come in.

At the same time, The Carbondale Southern Illinoisan reported that the process that was beset with technological problems is not nearly as difficult for those who applied in recent months as it was for those who applied earlier in the year.

Nicholas Sheley sentenced to 4 more life terms

MORRISON – A man serving two life sentences for a pair of Illinois killings was sentenced Monday to four more.

Nicholas Sheley was convicted of murder in May for fatally beat-

ing three adults and a 2-year-old with a hammer in a northwest Illinois apartment. The Telegraph in Dixon reported he was sentenced Monday to four life terms for those deaths.

The killings were part of a series of eight murders authorities say Sheley committed in the summer

Illinois State Fair postpones harness races

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois State Fair postponed Monday’s harness races because of unfavorable track conditions.

The races will now be run Wednesday starting at noon.

Nearly three dozen horses were quarantined briefly over the weekend because of concerns they may have been exposed to a virus.

Officials lifted the quarantine Saturday, after the animals were cleared of having the equine herpes virus. The concern followed reports that a horse began exhibiting symptoms at Balmoral Park in Crete.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Judge extends temporary halt to Ohio executions COLUMBUS, Ohio – A freeze on capital punishment in Ohio will continue into 2015 after a federal judge extended a months-long moratorium on executions as questions mount about the effectiveness of a new, two-drug combination being used to carry out the death penalty.

The ruling by federal judge Gregory Frost delays executions scheduled for September, October, November and January and highlights the ongoing problem faced by states in obtaining drugs to put inmates to death. It may also give Ohio more time to find sources for its preferred method – a single dose of compounded pentobarbital – which has been used without incident several times in Missouri and Texas.

The last Ohio moratorium was scheduled to expire this week, but the one-page order that Frost issued Friday extends it through Jan. 15. At issue is the state’s latest death penalty policy change, which was announced in late April and increases the amount of the sedative and painkiller Ohio uses.

Barneys to pay $525,000 in shopper-profiling probe NEW YORK – Barneys has agreed to pay $525,000 to resolve allegations that minorities were singled out as suspected shoplifters at its flagship store, part of a spate of racial profiling complaints against major retailers last year.

ployees complained that detectives followed minority customers around – even after staffers identified them as frequent patrons – and disproportionately investigated their credit-card use, so much so that some salespeople even avoided serving minority shoppers so as to avoid getting calls from store investigators, state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said Monday in announcing the settlement.

Besides the $525,000 in fines and expenses, Barneys will hire an “anti-profiling consultant” for two years, update its policy and record-keeping on detaining customers suspected of theft, and improve training of security and sales personnel.

Family of man fatally shot at Wal-Mart seeks video CINCINNATI – Family members of a man fatally shot by police at a southwestern Ohio Wal-Mart believe store video will provide answers about what happened that day and vindicate him.

The family’s attorney and the father of John Crawford III said Monday they requested surveillance video and communications between police and store security from Aug. 5, when Crawford was shot. Police said Crawford, 22, waved an air rifle at customers and was fatally shot by officers when he wouldn’t drop it.

Family attorney Michael Wright said they haven’t heard back from authorities or Wal-Mart about their requests.

LIEB The Associated Press FERGUSON, Mo. – A black teenager who was fatally shot by a police officer had his hands raised when the officer approached with his weapon drawn and fired repeatedly, according to two men who said they witnessed the shooting that sparked two nights of unrest in suburban St. Louis.

The FBI opened an investigation Monday into the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, who police said was shot multiple times Saturday after being confronted by an officer in Ferguson, a suburb of 21,000 that’s nearly 70 percent black.

Authorities in Ferguson used tear gas and rubber bullets to try to disperse a large crowd Monday night that had gathered at the site of a burned-out convenience store damaged a night earlier, when many businesses in the area were looted.

Police Chief Tom Jackson said members of the crowd threw rocks at police and

gunfire came from the crowd, so officers used tear gas and shot “beanbag rounds” meant to stun them.

An Associated Press photographer said police were telling people to go home, but authorities had blocked exit streets off. Jackson said police blocked off the area where most of the looting and vandalism occurred the previous night out of concern that cars passing by might hit demonstrators in the street.

Authorities were vague about exactly what led the officer to open fire on Brown, except to say that the shooting was preceded by a scuffle of some kind with a man. It was unclear whether Brown or the man he was with was involved in the altercation.

Investigators have refused to publicly disclose the race of the officer, who is now on administrative leave. But Phillip Walker said he was on the porch of an apartment complex overlooking the scene when he heard a shot and saw a white officer with Brown on the street.

the sense of raising his arms and being subdued,” Walker told The Associated Press on Monday. The officer “had his gun raised and started shooting the individual in the chest multiple times.” The officer then “stood over him and shot him” after the victim fell wounded.

Dorian Johnson offered a similar account when he told WALB-TV that he and Brown were walking home from a convenience store when a police officer told them to get out of the street and onto the sidewalk. Johnson said they kept walking, which caused the officer to confront them from his car and again after getting out of the vehicle.

Johnson said the first time the officer fired, he and Brown got scared and ran away.

“He shot again, and once my friend felt that shot, he turned around and put his hands in the air, and he started to get down,” Johnson said. “But the officer still approached with his weapon drawn and fired several more shots.”

WASHINGTON – The Drug Enforcement Administration paid an Amtrak secretary $854,460 over nearly 20 years to obtain confidential information about train passengers, which the DEA could have lawfully obtained for free through a law enforcement network, The Associated Press has learned.

The employee was identified only as a “secretary to a train and engine crew” in an Amtrak inspector general report. The secretary was allowed to retire, rather than face administrative discipline, after the discovery that the employee had effectively been acting as an informant who “regularly” sold private passenger information since 1995 without Amtrak’s approval, according to a summary of the matter.

“Great nations need organizing principles, and ‘don’t do stupid stuff’ is not an organizing principle,” Clinton said in a weekend magazine interview, referring to a version of the phrase Obama and his advisers have used privately to describe his ap-

proach to foreign policy.

Asked for her organizing principle, she replied: “Peace, progress, and prosperity. This worked for a very long time.”

Clinton’s critiques come as she weighs whether to seek the White House in 2016, and as Obama wrestles with tough choices on how the U.S. Hillary should engage Clinton in disputes erupting across the world.

In a wide-ranging interview with The Atlantic published on its website, Clinton offered an uncompromising defense of Israel’s battle against Hamas in Gaza and argued against Obama’s de-

cision not to build up a fighting force to confront Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Clinton previously described her advocacy for the Syrian rebellion in “Hard Choices,” her memoir about her time leading the State Department. Obama has said supporting the rebels would not have stopped al-Qaida-inspired groups from rampaging across Syria and inside Iraq today.

Clinton and then-Defense Secretary Leon Panetta reportedly argued for arming the rebels who first stood up to Assad three years ago.

Since then, the question of “arming the rebels” has become more complicated, as alQaida-linked and other fundamentalist Islamist groups have joined the rebellion.

DETROIT – People are waiting longer than they should for an answer when they petition the government to open an investigation into what could be serious safety problems.

The Associated Press reviewed all 15 petitions filed by drivers with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration since 2010 and found the agency missed the legal deadline to grant or deny the requests 12 times. One petition from 2012 has yet to be resolved.

A 1974 law passed to make the agency move faster requires a decision within four months of receiving a petition. But even though the agency has fined automakers such as General Motors and Toyota millions for missing deadlines to disclose safety issues, there is no penalty when it’s tardy itself.

NHTSA concedes it has missed the deadlines but says it often must ask petitioners for more data to complete its analysis.

Still, in eight petitions reviewed by the AP, it took more than a year to open an investigation or close the case.

Safety advocates say a delay that long can put lives at risk. And given the recent criticism of the agency for its role in GM’s delayed recall of cars with defective ignition switches, these advocates question whether it is functioning well enough to protect the public.

“Everything is just really slow,” says Matt Oliver, executive director of the North Carolina Consumers Council, which petitioned the government in February 2012 on behalf of drivers seeking an investigation of Nissan truck transmission failures. It has yet to get a decision.

PORT LEYDEN, N.Y. – Kevin Ward Jr. was crafting a reputation as a wheelman, the kind of driver who could race vehicles on any track without fear.

He’d sit up on his seat, floor it, and zip his way through a maze of cars straight toward the front of the pack.

For points. For fun. Often for little money.

“He would go to tracks that a lot of other drivers wouldn’t go to,” Chuck Miller, the race director and president for the Empire Super Sprints circuit, said Monday. “If we had co-sanctioned races with other organizations where we really weren’t giving points or anything, but it was a deal where you wanted to see how you stacked up against the other competition, the Wards were willing to go and do that and see where they were at.”

Ward began racing go-

karts in 1998 at age 4. In 2010, he moved on to sprint cars and was Empire Super Sprint racing rookie of the year in 2012. The 20-year-old raced mostly on dirt tracks a few hours from his home in Port Leyden, a village of 700 in northern New York.

Ward was killed Saturday night about 140 miles away at a clay track in Canandaigua.

NASCAR champion Tony Stewart was the big name in the field, racing with the young guys while he was in the area for a Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen the next day.

Ward and Stewart tangled, and Ward hit the wall. Ward walked on the track apparently to confront Stewart, and was struck when Stewart’s vehicle seemed to fishtail.

On Monday, several cars were parked in front of the Ward home in Port Leyden. A police officer stood across the street, politely asking reporters not to park on the road’s shoulder.

YACOUB The Associated Press BAGHDAD – Iraq’s president snubbed incumbent Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and picked another politician to form the next government Monday, setting up a fierce political power struggle even as the country battles extremists in the north and west.

The showdown came as the United States increased its role in fighting back Sunni extremists of the Islamic State group that is threatening the

autonomous Kurdish region in the north. Senior American officials said U.S. intelligence agencies are directly arming the Kurds who are battling the militants in what would be a shift in Washington’s policy of only working through the central government in Baghdad.

U.S. warplanes carried out new strikes Sunday, hitting a convoy of Sunni militants moving to attack Kurdish forces defending the autonomous zone’s capital, Irbil. The recent American airstrikes have helped the Kurds achieve one of their first victories after

weeks of retreat as peshmerga fighters over the weekend recaptured two towns near Irbil. The Pentagon’s director of operations said the effort will do little to slow Islamic State militants overall.

Haider al-Ibadi, the deputy speaker of parliament from al-Maliki’s Shiite Dawa party, was selected by President Fouad Massoum to be the new prime minister and was given 30 days to present a new government to lawmakers for approval.

In another speech broadcast Monday night, al-Maliki insisted al-Ibadi’s nomination “runs against the constitutional procedures” and he accused the United States of siding with political forces “who have violated the constitution.”

“Today, we are facing a grave constitutional breach and we have appealed and we

have the proof that we are the largest bloc,” al-Maliki said.

“We assure all the Iraqi people and the political groups that there is no importance or value to this nomination,” he added.

But despite angrily insisting he should be nominated for a third term, al-Maliki has lost some support with the main coalition of Shiite parties. His critics say al-Maliki contributed to Iraq’s political crisis by monopolizing power and pursuing a sectarian agenda that alienated the country’s Sunni and Kurdish minorities.

MADRID – Now it’s not just two Americans, but a Spaniard as well: the three non-Africans known to have Ebola got some of the very few doses that exist of an experimental drug aimed at treating the deadly disease.

None of the more than 1,700 Africans sickened by Ebola have received this treatment.

This drug, ZMapp, is so novel and unproven that not much is available and its effectiveness remains unknown.

It could end up doing more harm than good. It would take months to produce even modest quantities. Even then, using it more widely would present other ethical dilemmas.

But many Africans see a larger, bitter truth in the fact that two Americans and a Spaniard coujld get this treatment after being infected in West Africa, where the hemorrhagic fever has raged for months, killing 961 people and counting.

“There’s no reason to try this medicine on sick white people and to ignore blacks,” said Marcel Guilavogui, a pharmacist in Conakry, Guinea. “We understand that it’s a drug that’s being tested for the first time and that could have negative side effects. But we have to try it in blacks, too.”

Some are using Twitter to demand that the drug be made available in Africa.

Gaza cease-fire takes hold; negotiators meet

By MOHAMMED DARAGHMEH The Associated Press CAIRO – As a new temporary truce took hold, negotiators from Israel and the Hamas militant group resumed indirect talks Monday to reach a long-term cease-fire in the Gaza Strip.

The two sides huddled in an Egyptian government building for nine consecutive hours, a Palestinian official said Monday, in what are expected to be marathon negotiations in the coming days.

The Palestinian delegations were more optimistic Monday, the Palestinian official told the Associated Press, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the negotiations with

the media. He said progress was made on several issues.

The 72-hour truce, brokered by Israel, took effect just after midnight, in the second attempt to halt a month of heavy fighting between the sides.

A similar three-day truce collapsed on Friday when militants resumed rocket fire on Israel after the sides were unable to make any headway in Egyptian-brokered negotiations for a more lasting deal.

Hamas is seeking an end to an Israeli-Egyptian border blockade, while Israel wants Hamas to disarm.

The monthlong war, pitting the Israeli military against rocket-firing Hamas militants, has killed more than 1,900 Palestinians, the majority civilians, Palestinian and U.N. officials say.

DONETSK, Ukraine – Ukrainian forces Monday zeroed in on rebel strongholds as the government welcomed an international humanitarian relief mission into the rebellious east involving Russia, the United States and the European Union.

The mission will be conducted under the auspices of the International Committee of the Red Cross.

The organization said in a statement it is ready to facilitate the operation with the involvement of all sides concerned following a Russian initiative to provide humanitarian assistance to people in eastern Ukraine.

It wasn’t clear when the deliveries would start.

“The practical details of this operation need to be clarified before this initiative can move forward,” said Laurent Corbaz, the ICRC’s head of operations for Europe and Central Asia.

Moscow had long urged Kiev to allow the aid delivery, but Ukraine and the West previously had opposed the move, fearing that it could serve as a pretext for sending Russian troops into rebel-held territory.

Ukraine and the West have accused Moscow of arming and supporting the rebels fighting government troops in the east, a charge that the Kremlin has denied.

The Red Cross said it has shared a document with Ukrainian and Russian authorities that stipulates all parties must guarantee the security of its staff during the operation and respect the organization’s neutrality.

The aid mission was announced after a conversation Monday between U.S. President Barack Obama and Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

The White House said that Obama and Poroshenko agreed that “any Russian intervention in Ukraine without the formal, express consent and authorization of the Ukraine government would be unacceptable and a violation of international law.”

Shortly before that, Russia had declared that it was dispatching a humanitarian convoy into Ukraine in cooperation with the Red Cross without giving any details.

President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, later was quoted by Russian news wires as saying that the convoy wouldn’t involve and military personnel.

U.S. must get serious about water pollution When officials said it was unsafe to drink or even bathe in Toledo, Ohio’s municipal water supplies earlier this month, it was a major inconvenience for nearly a half-million residents.

It also was a wake-up call for the rest of the nation to the fact that water pollution can directly affect the health of humans as well as rivers, lakes and aquatic life.

The question is whether this news will lead to meaningful action to improve water quality in this country.

The water problem that made the news in Toledo is also an issue for bodies of water ranging from Minnesota, California, Cape Cod and Chesapeake Bay to the Gulf of Mexico – and Iowa.

Des Moines officials said last week that if the right circumstances were to occur locally, Iowa’s largest metro area could have to deal with the same situation.

It is time for the nation and these affected regions to commit to meaningful action.

Toledo draws its drinking water from Lake Erie, which routinely is affected by algae plumes created by excess nutrients flowing into the water from agricultural areas, urban sewage and industrial waste. It appears the plume on Lake Erie that settled directly over Toledo’s water intake pipes spawned toxic microcystin, which may cause diarrhea, vomiting and liver problems.

The drinking water ban was lifted last week, but the toxic algae plume won’t go away permanently anytime soon. Unless water quality improves on Lake Erie, according to experts quoted by the New York Times, the problem Toledo encountered potentially could affect 11 million residents living along the lake.

The reasons cited for the growth of algae plumes include intensive farming, animal confinements, urbanization and industrialization in the region. Whereas the federal regulators can legally require compliance by cities and factories, Ohio’s plan for dealing with the problem relies on voluntary compliance by agriculture.

If this sounds familiar, that is because Iowa and other Midwest states have used the same voluntary approach to reducing excess nutrients in the Mississippi River basin.

Those nutrients, which come mostly from agriculture, feed massive algae plumes in the Gulf of Mexico.

It is known as the dead zone because the plumes starve oxygen needed by aquatic life.

It is hard to say whether Iowa’s nutrient reduction strategy is having significant impact, but recent evidence is not encouraging.

Just what happened in this case?

As you probably know by now, the U.S. Attorney’s office in Chicago has agreed to drop all felony charges against Illinois state Rep. LaShawn Ford, D-Chicago, and has charged him instead with a simple misdemeanor.

The original 17 federal counts of bank fraud and submitting false information to a bank each carried potential sentence of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine – meaning Ford essentially was looking at spending the rest of his natural life behind bars for allegedly falsely obtaining a higher credit line that he wasn’t eligible for and using part of the proceeds for things unrelated to the loan’s stated purpose.

The assistant U.S. attorney who was in charge of Ford’s case also handled state Rep. Derrick Smith’s investigation.

Smith recently was convicted of accepting a cash bribe, but one of the jurors in the trial told the Chicago Tribune after the verdict that some of his colleagues struggled with what they considered to be “sleazy” federal tactics.

Ford’s legal team included

famed criminal defense attorney Tom Durkin. The team filed a motion in June that attracted some press coverage over an explosive claim that Ford was being targeted because he was a black legislator.

But the motion to dismiss the indictment also revealed for the first time how the case began, which Ford’s attorneys said “belie the notion that this is an even-handed, simple bank fraud case.”

At the time of Ford’s indictment, the U.S. Attorney’s Office claimed the investigation fell “under the umbrella of the Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force,” which the feds claimed was investigating “significant financial crimes.”

20 Fardon backed down from case, to his credit • MILLER Continued from page 19 But an FBI report from May 2011 shows that a mortgage broker under indictment was asked by the FBI about a loan officer who worked out of an office owned by Ford.

The broker was asked if he ever had spoken with Ford, if he knew whether Ford had other offices, and if he knew whether Ford managed his campaign office out of his realty office. The case title on the FBI form was “CSLPO,” which means “Corruption of State and Local Public Officials.” Ford’s lawyers wrote that the federal probe was “undeniably a politically motivated investigation.”

The defense also pointed to a recent Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) civil suit brought against ShoreBank, where Ford did business. One of the defendants was alleged to be negligent for violating policy on 20 loans. The defendant also was Ford’s managing loan officer. The allegations included misconduct by other ShoreBank

loan customers (several of whom are white) that appeared to far exceed Ford’s. And a 2008 internal FDIC report uncovered by Ford’s attorneys described the legislator as being “extremely cooperative” with the bank, and pointed to what Ford’s lawyers say was the his real problem – the downward spiral of the real estate market.

“Unable to find any political corruption grounds to prosecute Defendant, the prosecutors selected this misguided and improper bank fraud case,” Ford’s attorneys wrote. Ford’s attorneys also demanded information from prosecutors about any other federal investigations of ShoreBank customers and any directives from above on how to handle the Ford investigation.

The assistant U.S. attorney who handled Ford’s case has since left for private practice, and a new U.S. Attorney is now in place. Those two career moves appeared to have put some fresh eyes on this Ford matter, particularly after that motion to dismiss was filed.

Whatever happened, U.S.

Attorney Zachary Fardon deserves plaudits for reexamining this prosecution. From the very start, the case appeared to be heavy-handed and overly charged, and nowhere near in line with the financial task force’s goal of prosecuting “significant” crimes. It’s not often that a top federal prosecutor will back down, but Fardon obviously did – and that’s to his great credit.

Ford obviously has his flaws, but I hope he can now move forward with his life.

Leaders of farm organizations and state agriculture and environmental officials in Iowa point to anecdotal evidence that farmers are improving their land-use practices to stop excess nutrients from washing downstream. Those examples are encouraging, but Iowa agricultural and political leaders oppose setting quantifiable goals for water quality and measuring results within specific watersheds.

That opposition must end. Otherwise, those examples are just anecdotes, and there will be no way to know for sure what farming practices are effective. When practices that work can be quantified – if not measured at each farm, at least within regional watersheds – the public should be willing to help farmers pay for the necessary investment.

Stories have attracted the nation’s attention about people in an Ohio city the size of metro Des Moines losing their drinking water, or the fishing industry in Louisiana struggling to survive. Now, states such as Ohio and Iowa should show the nation they are serious about achieving clean water.

West’s young cast kicks off fall practice

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – One day into the official beginning of fall football practice, Joliet West made its first and only cut.

“I have cut myself,” athletic director Steve Millsaps told the rest of the Tigers as they gathered following a morning practice.

A defensive back at Joliet Catholic during his playing days, Millsaps worked out Monday as a second-team linebacker and walked off with an ice bag around his calf. He will participate in one practice in each of West’s fall sports, an idea he said he got from his friend and former baseball teammate at Lewis, Lockport baseball coach Andy Satunas.

“He was reading about an AD doing that in Michigan, and I thought I should give it a try,” Millsaps said.

West football coach Jason Aubry, in his ninth season as a Joliet Township head coach, was all for it. He has a team this fall that he is eager to coach, a team that can have some fun while working to the max.

“You can criticize this group, and they will do what they are supposed to do with the criticism,” Aubry said.

“They don’t talk back to the coaches or walk out of here.

We ran them like crazy today, and they did it. They realize we just want to make them the best they can be.

“The amount of kids we don’t want to have out here is definitely diminished.”

Still, even the most ardent West fans have to be excused if they show up at one of the early-season games and ask, “Who are these guys?”

This is the time of year when teams statewide are garnering rankings based on what they have coming back and how many Division I prospects they have. Aubry knows there are few household names in West’s camp; and most likely, nobody will expect much from the Tigers. But all that means is opponents may be in for a surprise.

The offensive line, led by Bohanek and left guard Scott Blankenship – both in their third varsity season – returns everyone. Otherwise, there are a few part-time starters back, plus a slew of fresh faces. The veteran offensive line plans to provide leadership.

“I think our offense will be something special,” Bohanek said. “JB [Jordan Brown] ran for 1,000 yards last year. That’s something we use as motivation.

“Our passing and running game will be different this

year, – different as in better.”

Senior Mitch Dolak, who backed up All-Area quarterback Anthony DiNardo last season, and quick junior Alex Tibble are contending for the quarterback spot.

With Brown, DiNardo and a full cast of solid receivers,

West featured its skill players last fall and finished 3-6. However, the record camouflaged how close the Tigers were to beating Sandburg and Lincoln-Way East, and to being a playoff team.

If attitude matters, this team is prepared to take the next step.

“We’re young, but we have a lot of great kids,” Aubry said.

“We have this hash tag, TPW, for ‘tough people win.’

That applies here on the field and in life. There are so many life lessons here on the field and in life. The life lessons that can be learned from football are huge.”

As much as last season’s senior players will be missed, Aubry said there is another graduation that hurt.

“One big loss was Tyler Kenney, my director of video operations for four years,” he said. “He’s a freshman at St. Francis now. He stopped over at the start of practice but had to leave. He is at the stadium for the St. Francis practice.”

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Although Joliet Central has struggled on the football field since the split in programs, it is hoping that some historic events provide extra motivation this season.

Not only are the Steelmen seeking their first victory after four winless years, but they also are excited about their initial home night game on campus in the season opener.

Following their opening practice Monday, Central’s players talked about just how important a win would be over Thornridge in the Aug. 29 game that kicks off at 6:30 p.m.

“We hope to get that win in our first game since we’ve worked real hard in June and July,” senior defensive lineman Jake Klima said. “Our attitude is nothing but focused now. Our numbers are low, so our conditioning will get us mentally prepared.

“We really want to get this win to prove everyone wrong and show that we can win.

Just getting one win will build our confidence. And then who knows what we can do? I hope a lot of people in Joliet come to our night game to see what we’re about. I think everybody at our school is excited about the first night game.”

“I can’t wait to play in my first night game at home, and I want to be able to get that first win for Central,” senior fullback/halfback Tommie Sherman said. “I want the crowd to be into it for that first night game. I want this to be the team that starts the legacy for

Central. We want the win, especially the seniors, since four years of losing is not fun.

“This was probably the best first day that we’ve had, looking at it numbers-wise, and how people did with conditioning. I like the energy and attitudes on this team. Last year, we had a lot of people who’d walk off the field and say, ‘I don’t want to do this.’ This year, guys want to do better,

and they don’t quit.”

Central coach Brett Boyter thinks that the group of athletes that he has this season gives his program the potential to reach the goals they’ve set.

“We don’t have a lot of guys, but we have the right guys, and they show up and work hard every day,” Boyter said.

“The best thing that we’ve taken from the summer is that

we’ve truly grown as a team.

There’s a lot of trust between the coaches and the guys.

There’s a lot of positive momentum going forward after a very productive summer.

“We had a good first day of practice and they’ve just carried over from what we did in the month of July. We have a team full of guys who like each other and they’ve worked hard with each other in the offseason and that’s built a lot of trust. They understand what they’re capable of doing and when we ask them to do something, they do it.”

While Boyter shares his players’ excitement about the first night game and the chance to collect the elusive initial win, he’s still focused on taking things day by day.

“We talk about getting that first win but also, we emphasize that to get that first win, we have to take care of business each day by showing up and doing your job,” Boyter said. “Because these guys have seen what we’ve been building in the weight room, in camp and now practice, the confidence is starting to build.

“By the time that kickoff comes on the 29th, the guys are going to be absolutely prepared to win that game. They obviously still have to play it, but the confidence will be there, and that’s a huge difference with some of our teams in the past.”

Green team claims Paul Downey Cup

By DICK GOSS dgoss@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The event has been renamed the Paul Downey Cup in honor of the University of St. Francis’ Hall of Fame men’s golf coach.

Downey could not help smiling as the Cup, which pits current USF golfers and alumni from the program, wound down Monday at Inwood. His Green team was finishing off Brian Legan’s White team, 12.5-8.5.

The alumni squad still leads overall, 6-4, but Downey’s squad owns a twoyear winning streak.

What began strictly as an active vs. alumni challenge has used a draft the past cou-

ple of years, thus allowing more alumni to join in. Legan, a member of Downer’s early teams at USF and the general manager at Inwood, and Downey organized the competition a decade ago.

The Green team broke away from a 3.5 tie in the morning two-man scramble to dominate the more-serious singles matches in the afternoon, 9-5.

“I know the current players, of course,” Downey said.

“The alumni, I know them, but I don’t know how much some of them have been playing. But there are certain ones that when they know this event is coming up, they are going to get ready.”

Green winners in singles

were Jason Chobar, Mike Mysker, Grant Garza, Pat Fitzgerald, Jon Zolecki, Josh Gorzney, Huston Gass and Josh Gass. Luke Burkett finished all square against Jeremy Kreiger and Austin Gass was all square with Marty Hetelle.

White singles winners were Tom Uraski, Steve Tubman, Kyle Stenzel and Frank Hohenadel.

By the standards of the players involved, the golf was so-so.

But two Minooka graduates continued to show well.

Zolecki, a 2007 USF graduate, recently finished second in the Chicago City Tournament at Jackson Park with 66-63-76 for a 54-hole total of

“I’ll tell you something about Jon,” Downey said. “He was in his last semester at USF. He was taking 23 credit hours, got about a 4.0 average and did not miss a tournament.”

Chobar, entering his freshman year at USF, “is in the top three so far for us, and the top three automatically will qualify to play in our first two tournaments.”

“I’ve just been trying to put up the numbers I know I can,” Chobar said. “If I make the first two tournaments,

great. If not, I’ll work on what kept me from it.”

The Green shirts persevered, including late, when a thunderstorm hit.

“On paper, it’s paper,” Legan said. “Match play is the great equalizer. I’ll say this, I would take the same guys and play this tomorrow, and you’d see it go the other way. In match play, you see different shots. You see guys go for things they normally wouldn’t.”

Ultimately, as Legan said, this was Downey’s day.

“Coach hits a ceremonial tee shot, he’s a Hall of Famer, he deserves this,” Legan said.

“He has helped a lot of guys in life, He always has upheld what is important.”

Pitcher Bradshaw finger Baker cooks up late-model victory injury hurts Slammers SUBMITTED REPORT

By MIKE FITZGERALD Shaw Media Correspondent JOLIET – Joliet Slammers starter Travis Bradshaw was cruising before a sore and cramping index finger on his pitching hand ended his Monday night.

With his departure, Joliet fell behind Southern Illinois, 6-1, in a rain-delayed game that at press time was in the sixth inning at Silver Cross Field.

The Slammers broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fourth inning when Russell Moldenhauer singled, advanced to second on Matt Weaver’s groundout and scored on Adam Giacalone’s single to center to make it 1-0.

The Miners responded by scoring five runs in the top of the fifth inning off Joliet reliever Sam Moore. Moore came on with two outs in the fourth inning when Bradshaw could no longer pitch.

Jon Eisen and Ryan Cavan hit back-to-back singles before Moore walked Niko Vasquez

to load the bases. Moore walked Frank Martinez to tie the game before giving up a two-run single to Aaron Gates that put the Miners ahead 3-1.

Chris Burke’s sacrifice fly scored Martinez to make it 4-1.

A Steve Martino single made it 5-1.

The Slammers, who entered with a 29-45 record, had a chance to stake Bradshaw, a right-hander, to a lead in the first inning of a game that started an hour late.

Chris Epps led off with a walk. Adrian English followed with a single to left. Grant DeBruin then hit into a 5-4-3 double play that advanced Epps to third. Moldenhauer ended the inning with a lineout to Miners center fielder Jay Austin.

Bradshaw,who pitched for Southern Illinois in 2013, threw three scoreless innings to start the game. The 6-foot-7 Bradshaw pitched his rookie season for the Miners, going 3-0 in 12 starts with a 2.84 ERA and one complete game. He entered Monday with a 2-1 record

and 3.24 ERA. Bradshaw worked his way out of a jam in the third inning.

After he retired the first two Miners, he walked Eisen and gave up a single to Cavan. Bradshaw jammed the next hitter, Vasquez, who popped out to English to end the inning.

Southern Illinois starter, left-hander Rick Teasley (8-2, 2.95 ERA), also threw three scoreless innings to start the game. Teasley allowed one hit while striking out three in that span.

The Miners, who entered 45-29, needed a win move into a first place tie in the Frontier League East Division for the first time this season.

DeBruin needed a hit to have hit safely in 20 of the last 24 games. He entered Monday’s game hitting .359, good for second among active players in the Frontier League.

The Slammers released pitcher Alex Kaminsky on Monday after he was shelled by the Miners in Saturday’s 13-7 loss.

MORRIS – Ricky Baker got back into contention thanks to a caution flag on Lap 20 and passed John Nutley on Lap 25 en route to winning his seventh late-model feature of the season Friday night at Grundy County Speedway.

Nutley, Billy Knippenberg, Larry Schuler, Chris Cooling, fast qualifier Pat Kelly, Brandon Clubb, Tony Scarpelli Jr., David Einhaus and Eddie Hoffman rounded out the top 10.

Knippenberg won the first heat ahead of Baker.

Chuck Sottosanti and Einhaus were 1-2 in the second heat.

Points leader and fast qualifier Tom Knippenberg cruised to his eighth Mid-American feature win.

Jason Hendron was second, followed by Matt Clemens, Kevin Murphy, Joe Vinachi, Jeremy Clubb, John Ventrello, Chuck Yuris, Billy Rud and Jeff Wakeman.

Clemens was first and Vinachi second in the first heat. Rud beat Clubb to the finish line in the second heat.

Street socks points leader Eddie Ligue won that feature for the fifth time. John Senerchia finished second.

Jake Bradley, Christy Penrod, Paul Polarekl, Rita Fields, Pete Odell, Bob Davis, Renee Farren and Craig Matteson completed the top 10.

Penrod set the fast time.

Senerchia and Scamen were 1-2 in the first heat, and Ligue and Matteson 1-2 in the second heat.

Ricky Wilson claimed his first pure stocks feature win. Mike Yuris, Nick Clubb, Zach Sontag, Alex Gay, Jim Gross, Austin Blackwell, Jeff Law, Mike Slabenak and Dan Schmeissing rounded out the top 10.

Sontag set the fast time.

Blackwell won the first heat ahead of Gross. Slabenak beat Chris Mihalski in the second heat.

LB Greene grows in second season

By MATTHEW PARAS mparas@shawmedia.com BOURBONNAIS – The ability to force turnovers is critical for a defense, and frankly, it was an area in which the Bears failed to capitalize last season.

So when Khaseem Greene came away with an Eagles fumble in the third quarter of the first preseason game Friday, it was an encouraging sign for the second-year Bears linebacker.

Linebackers are expected to be able to make those plays, and Greene came through.

However, it was the spin move that followed the recovery that caught people off guard. Greene shed an Eagles defender with a spin to gain an extra 15 yards, giving the Bears the ball at the Philadelphia 10-yard line.

“It’s something that came natural,” Greene said, smiling.

“My brother Ray (Graham) is a pretty good running back, so I copy one of his moves every now and again.”

Greene spent time with the first-team nickel defense Monday as Lance Briggs sat out practice. The reps were helpful for a player trying to take a noticeable step in 2014. The

25-year-old already lost weight at the start of the offseason and now is trying to hone his vision on the field.

“The game has slowed down a lot for me this year,” Greene said.

“I’m seeing stuff quicker and just be able to use my natural instincts to react. It’s fun now. There’s no overthinking or anything like that.”

In his rookie season, Greene, who was drafted in the fourth round out of Rutgers, struggled to get a hold of the pace of the NFL. He was thrust

into the spotlight after Briggs missed seven games with a shoulder injury, starting in four of those seven games.

Greene said his veteran teammates told him the game would slow once he started to experience how to plan for opponents and as he aged.

In the first preseason game, Greene had two tackles on top of his fumble recovery.

He said he noticed a lot of mistakes when looking at the game film.

“There’s a lot of stuff that needs to be corrected,” he said.

“But the important thing is we got to be out there playing in full speed. We got turnovers and we’re having fun. It was good to be back out there and be live.

“I’ve got to play better on my hands. I’ve got to try and get in on more tackles.”

As Greene progresses throughout camp, linebackers coach Reggie Herring has noticed Greene’s commitment to becoming a better player.

“He’s maturing every day as a person,” Herring said.

“He’s really having a consistent camp. It’s exciting and it gives you hope to see him grow each day. If he continues on track where he is right now, he has a chance to help us this year and provide some really good depth.”

Greene said he wants to help the team in any way he can, which also involves playing on special teams. Greene added that it’s important as a backup to be able to contribute there, as well.

“You’ve got to put it on film, every single play and every single down,” Greene said.

“You don’t want to have a falloff from the first guy to the second guy, so it’s just been a transition for me.”

CHICAGO – Yovani Gallardo pitched seven sparkling innings and Khris Davis had a tiebreaking RBI double, leading the Milwaukee Brewers to a 3-1 victory over the Cubs on Monday night.

Gallardo bounced back nicely from a sluggish outing against San Francisco, allowing one run and six hits while improving to 9-3 with a 3.00 ERA in 18 career starts against the Cubs.

Mark Reynolds connected for his 20th homer as Milwaukee got its fourth victory in five games.

Coming off his worst start of the year, Jake Arrieta gave

up two runs and five hits in 71⁄3 innings for the Cubs. The righthander was hit hard in a loss at Colorado on Wednesday, allowing season highs of nine runs and 13 hits in five-plus innings.

Arrieta (6-4) retired 13 in a row before Ryan Braun started the seventh with a single to center.

Braun was cut down at the plate when he tried to score from second on Scooter Gennett’s one-out double, but Davis followed with a liner into the left-field corner to give the Brewers a 2-1 lead.

Gennett also had a two-out RBI single in the ninth for his 30th multihit game of the year.

It was more than enough for Gallardo (7-6), who retired his last seven batters.

He struck out six and walked none in only his second victory in his last nine starts for the NL Central leaders.

Will Smith pitched a perfect eighth and Francisco Rodriguez finished the seven-hitter for his major league-best 36th save in 40 opportunities.

Reynolds connected with two out in the second, ending a 1-for-18 slump since his previous homer Aug. 3 at St. Louis.

The free-swinging Reynolds has at least 20 homers and 106 strikeouts in each of the past seven seasons.

Reynolds’ deep drive to left on Arrieta’s first pitch was gloved by a Cubs fan in the back row of the bleachers, earning a loud ovation from the crowd of 28,927.

On-the-spot diagnosis New Lenox hospital using a new endoscopic procedure to quickly figure out and treat cancer in certain diseases

Shaw Media Correspondent NEW LENOX – When a physician uses an endoscope to see inside a patient’s esophagus, he might take a snip or two of any suspicious areas and then give the cells to a pathologist to examine under a microscope. The pathologist determines if the cells are normal or abnormal.

Now, a handful of physicians can put the microscope right inside their patients’ esophagi with a new type of endoscope, a confocal laser endomicroscope. This is a tiny microscope that can immediately identify abnormal cells.

This type of direct observation of the body’s cells at the microscopic level is called an optical biopsy and is being used by Dr. Kamran Ayub, medical director of the Advanced Endoscopy Center at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox.

Silver Cross Hospital is the second nonteaching hospital in the state to use the new technology, according to information supplied by the New Lenox-based hospital. A single image from this microscope, according to the hospital, is so precise that it can detect objects as small as half the diameter of a strand of hair. This makes it worth 1,000 biopsies.

The procedure, Ayub said, gives faster and more precise diagnoses of gastrointestinal cancers and other diseases.

“By passing a very thin probe into the esophagus, we can look at tissue like we are seeing it through a microscope – highly magnified,” Ayub said.

“It is on-the-spot diagnosis.”

With other methods, Ayub said a pathology diagnosis can take up to a week.

“With this,” Ayub said, “we can make the diagnosis in a matter of minutes. Then we can use other equipment to treat if need be.”

Ayub said the equipment can be used to diagnose or check for signs of illnesses, such as Barrett’s esophagus, or polyps in the stomach and colon, pancreatic cysts, and strictures of

Barrett’s esophagus occurs when normal tissue in the esophagus changes into tissue that is found in the intestinal lining. This puts the person at a small risk for esophageal cancer.

Barret’s esophagus is most commonly diagnosed in people with longstanding GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). The percentage of people with GERD that will develop Barrett’s esophagus is also small.

However, once these pre-cancerous cells are found, regular checkups are important.

“Plus, we can move [the probe] back and forth and cover a huge area,” Ayub said. “When we take a biopsy, we can only get a 1 millimeter area.”

Ronald Schlekeway, a retired biology teacher who lives in Minooka, is one of Ayub’s patients. He had his first optical biopsy with Ayub this summer and is scheduled for two more this year.

While Schlekeway was vacationing in Florida last winter, he began vomiting for no apparent reason. He went to the emergency room, then to a gastroenterologist and had several tests that led his medical specialists to believe he had a gallstone.

Students spent part of the morning in a lecture learning about the effects of a stroke and the importance of seeking treatment immediately upon onset of symptoms. They also

participated in hands-on simulation for the treatment of aneurysms and stroke. Then they toured Silver Cross’ Interventional Neurosurgical Facilities, which include a biplane angiography system that diagnoses and treats strokes and other neurological diseases.

In addition, the students also toured an ambulance and talked with paramedics about their role in transferring patients who may be suffering from a stroke to Silver Cross Hospital.

That is a good thought to keep in your mind when it seems that you are destined to end a bridge deal with a minus score. Fight on with stubborn fortitude.

In this deal, declarer does not face overwhelming odds, but the thought of being in four hearts with only seven trumps instead of playing in five clubs with nine trumps would daunt some players.

This layout arose during a pair event, where scoring the extra points from a major-suit contract can be very profitable.

Against four hearts, West starts with three rounds of spades. How should declarer continue?

South’s three-spade cue-bid asked his partner to bid three notrump with a spade stopper.

Yes, five clubs is much easier to make. But if South can bring home four hearts for plus 420, that will beat those declarers in five clubs scoring only plus 400.

South apparently has 10 top tricks: four hearts, one diamond and five clubs. But to run the clubs, he must first draw trumps.

And the six missing hearts will break 4-2 more often than 3-3 (a priori 48.45 percent versus 35.53 percent). And even if hearts are 3-3, South will always have a diamond loser. So, rather than ruff at trick three, South should discard a diamond.

If West persists with a fourth spade, South ruffs with dummy’s heart ace, draws trumps and claims.

I also care for my aged mother, which is like having another job. Because of this, I have little time to myself or to relax. During warm weather I enjoy taking an occasional break on my back deck, whether reading materials for work, enjoying a novel or

Son’s football concussion is a serious matter Dear Doctor K: My son got a concussion playing football. His doctor said he shouldn’t play again until his symptoms have completely disappeared. What symptoms should we be looking out for?

Dear Reader: A concussion follows a physical blow or impact to the head that disturbs the way the brain works. While it sometimes causes a person to temporarily lose consciousness, it doesn’t always do that. It also can cause other symptoms that indicate the brain has been injured – and those can become apparent days or weeks after a person who has been knocked out regains consciousness. A concussion is a serious injury, more serious than we used to think. Most people recover quickly and completely from a concussion. However, as long as even subtle symptoms of a concussion last, the brain remains especially vulnerable to another injury. As your son’s doctor advised, it is very important that your son not return to playing football, or any contact sport, until he is completely

Not only can a second concussion that occurs before the brain recovers from the first slow recovery; it also can increase the risk of long-term problems. It’s rare, but repeat concussions can also result in brain swelling, permanent brain damage, even death.

Concussion symptoms can be wide-ranging. As you might expect, a concussion can cause physical symptoms such as headache and dizziness. But a concussion can also cause problems with thinking, sleep and mood.

Some symptoms may appear immediately and go away quickly. Others may not emerge for days or even weeks, and may last for a few months. Look out for the following concussion-related symptoms: Headache; nausea; dizziness; fatigue; blurred vision; difficulty thinking, paying attention,

remembering and learning; depression; irritability; poor sleep; frustration; and poor focus.

There is no specific medicine used to treat a concussion. The best treatment is rest from physical and mental activity. Watch your son closely and contact his doctor if his symptoms get worse or if his behavior changes. Ask the doctor if your son should be excused from gym class or if he needs to limit his activities during recess.

You may need to adjust your child’s schedule and schoolwork as well. As for returning to sports, the timing is different for every child. Symptoms often go away within a couple of weeks, but some children may take months to get better.

Once you believe your son’s symptoms are gone, get his doctor’s OK before you let him back on the gridiron.

Mom’s decision is sound Dr. Wallace: I’m a 14-year-old girl. I’m a good kid, get good grades and earn my spending money by babysitting.

I usually spend it for clothes and entertainment. I’m glad my mom does not require me to save any money because everything is expensive these days and I need it all.

My mom and I were shopping yesterday, and I was looking for a lightweight jacket. The one I picked out was really cute and fit just perfectly, but my mom wouldn’t let me buy it. I think that since I earn my own money for clothes that I should get to pick the ones I want.

It was not too tight or revealing.

When I asked her why, she said because it was silver, and where we live a lot of gangbangers wear silver jackets with a black skull and crossbones on the back.

I’m doing the best that I can, and I always do my homework and study hard for tests.

Dr. Nameless: Parents who constantly compare their child to a friend or relative’s child are making a big mistake.

They are trying to encourage the student to do better, but this method is usually not effective. The reason is that the message is negative and translates to “You are not as good as your cousin.”

Wiser parents guide their children in a positive manner, giving praise and encouragement whenever possible.

Talk with your parents and do your best to explain how you feel. If they continue comparing you to your cousin, continue to do your very best, but allow their words to fall on deaf ears.

Seinfeld’s new venture: Coffee talk

By EMILY YAHR The Washington Post Jerry Seinfeld could have taken his gazillion-dollar “Seinfeld” fortune, gone merrily on his way and never worked again, but he decided two years ago to launch the Web series “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” on Sony’s Crackle. com.

The show is exactly what it sounds like: Seinfeld in conversation with his funniest celebrity friends, including David Letterman, Tina Fey, Mel Brooks, Louis C.K., Jon Stewart, Aziz Ansari and Sarah Silverman, among others.

The series, which is in its fourth season this summer, has collected more than 40 million views and an Emmy nomination.

How has it done so well? Obviously having the name “Seinfeld” attached doesn’t hurt. But the best explanation is that it’s a talk show without actually being a talk show.

If that sounds like Seinfeld-ian nonsense, well, that’s what it is. Following tradition, “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” is basically a show about nothing – except cars and coffee, sort of.

Every Thursday at noon, a new episode (generally about 15 to 20 minutes long) is posted, each kicking off with Seinfeld

asking a famous pal to join him for a cup of joe.

Then they take a ride in a classic car to a coffee shop and talk about everything from comedy to careers to kids to hobbies. It’s essentially eavesdropping as stars chat, so you learn all kinds of fun facts. For example: Jon Stewart has a three-legged dog. Tina Fey doesn’t have a driver’s license. Every night, Mel Brooks goes to Carl Reiner’s house where the two comedy legends eat dinner on TV trays and watch “Jeopardy!”

As it’s always an entertaining peek behind the scenes, the question becomes “When is Seinfeld going to take the show to television?” At this point, we know the drill: First comes the Web show, and if it’s really good, it’s picked up by a network for true stardom. Even in a world where Netflix reigns, we’re still ingrained to think of television as the ultimate platform.

Seinfeld’s answer, however, has always been the same: Never. And that’s probably for the best. Everyone knows that talk shows can have a rough time in the television world. Daytime and late-night TV are littered with failed ventures (“Bethenny,” “The Arsenio Hall Show,” “Totally Biased,” “Katie,” to name a few) for many reasons. Network interference. Hosts and producers

having different visions. The scramble to fill an episode every day or week.

Plus, Seinfeld isn’t a fan of modern-day talk shows, calling them “promotional vehicles for the industry.”

“They’re not talk shows, per se, they’re kind of setup talk shows – ‘I’m gonna ask you this, then you say that,’ “ he told the Hollywood Reporter. “The shows are pretty cheap, too, so until it becomes an unworkable business model, I don’t think you’ll see change.”

Network executives could promise to stay out of Seinfeld’s way, but the Internet still has much more freedom than broadcast or cable television could offer. With the Web show, there’s no pressure about when an episode needs to run, or for how long. No one gives notes. There are no pre-interviews.

Seinfeld can do whatever he wants, however he wants, and the result is a genuinely fascinating conversation.

The most important point, though, involves the comedians themselves. In front of a studio audience, they don’t open up the way they do in the relaxed atmosphere of Seinfeld’s low-key production.

That, in a nutshell, is why “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” works. And, as Seinfeld has learned through the years, you don’t mess with success.
