Batinick, R-Plainfield, held a second public discussion Monday night at Cemeno’s Restaurant in Joliet, inviting for debate state Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood; Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet; Rep. Emily McAsey, D-Lockport; Rep. Natalie Manley, D-Joliet; and Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Aurora.

None of the Democrats came to the first meeting he held July 20. He announced the second meeting in a news release Aug. 3.

“I almost didn’t hold this meeting,” Batinick said, adding he was disappointed they didn’t show.

“I welcome him to sincerely coordinate with us, not dictate the time and place.”

Cutting costs

While Batinick scheduled the event as a potential debate or discussion on the issues related to the budget impasse – now in day 45 – he instead spoke with the more than 20 people in attendance about some of his budget-trimming ideas.

He spoke of eliminating the gap between Illinois and the national average on dollars spent per full-time enrolled college student, centralizing

same-day voter registration, becoming “smarter” with money and adjusting workman’s compensation using a Massachusetts example.

But much of the talk focused around the budget impasse.

“I don’t think we’re as far apart as people think, Batinick said, noting he was ready to sign on to the Senate’s recently passed budget until he heard a “poison pill” amendment was attached to it Monday.

Missing guests

The five Democrats declined the invitation, most of them citing previously scheduled arrangements.

“I had a previous commitment,” McGuire said. “But I do have four town halls coming up. That’s an opportunity for me to listen, and [the constituents] have the opportunity to listen to me.”

Lockport to consider switching vehicle stickers for electricity tax

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – The Lockport City Council will consider next week swapping the city’s vehicle sticker program with a new tax.

Council members are scheduled to vote Aug. 19 to replace the vehicle sticker program with an electricity tax city officials said will be more efficient and require less administrative costs. Local schools and government bodies would be exempt from the tax.

But Lockport resident James McGuffog said the change will increase electricity rates for seniors and those with disabilities.

“It’s not the way to go about things. You just don’t propose something that has devastation to the section of the community. Lockport has a pretty high elderly population here,” he said.

the goal of the electricity tax is to swap it with the vehicle sticker program and it would not be a burden for seniors or residents with disabilities.

“I would’ve liked to get rid of it completely,” Streit said of the vehicle stickers.

Council members considered replacing the vehicle sticker program with an electricity tax last year. Erik Brown, former city finance director, said previously more than 1,500 hours of personnel time was used to administer the program. An estimated 15 percent of revenue from the program goes toward employee hours and other expenses, he said.

The proposed electricity tax would be based on monthly kilowatt use for residential and nonresidential ComEd customers. City officials said if electricity costs go up, it will not affect the tax. But the tax would increase or decrease based on how much electric-

ity a property owner uses or if council members agree to change the rates.

City staff laid out five rate options for how much they would charge under the tax, from 5 percent – the maximum allowed – to 3 percent. They recommended charging 3.5 percent, which would cost a resident who uses an average of 788 kilowatts a month $3.46 a month.

McGuffog said the problem with the electricity tax is it’s based on kilowatt use and seniors, along with people with disabilities, would not receive reduced rates.

Most of those people live on fixed income and if they have a large home, it will cost more to cool or heat, he said.

City Finance Director Lisa Heglund recommended council members approve replacing vehicle stickers with the electricity tax next week so the city and ComEd have enough time to implement it by Oct. 1.

Bertino-Tarrant also said she had prior engagements.

But she suggested Batinick didn’t invite the Democrats in a timely manner.

“I welcome him to sincerely coordinate with us, not dictate the time and place,” she said.

Kifowit, whose district covers Aurora and parts of Naperville and Oswego, said she doesn’t see the relevance of budget debates.

“We’re holding hearings on the budget and we’re doing our part legislatively trying to help get a budget passed,” Kifowit said. “We try our hardest to meet with constituents in the district.”

“I feel like we’re not having enough of a policy discussion in Springfield,” Batinick said at the event.

In a joint letter response to Batinick Monday, Manley, McAsey and Kifowit state they are working with their own constituents and ask Batinick to work with them on solving the budget impasse.

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – After months of speculation, Amazon.com has announced Joliet will be the site of the online retail giant’s first fulfillment center in Illinois – a move that will create 1,000 full-time jobs.

Amazon is retrofitting a 500,000-square-foot warehouse in the Laraway Crossings Business Park at Route 53 and Laraway Road to fill online orders and process small items, such as books, electronics and consumer goods, the company announced Monday.

The new Joliet location is part of Amazon’s ongoing efforts to invest heavily in fulfillment centers nationwide in the face of increased demand for online shopping and growing competition from both Internet and brick-and-mortar retailers, such as eBay, WalMart and others.

Fulfillment centers are where incoming orders are received from affiliated stores or locations, and then processed and filled.

It’s unclear when exactly the center will be operational, but it has been suggested by the property owner that Amazon wants to be up and running before the holidays.

John Greuling, president and CEO of the Will County Center for Economic Development, said Amazon is acting aggressively in its real estate acquisitions in hopes of capitalizing on the e-commerce industry’s growing demand.

It was initially anticipated Amazon would bring 500 jobs, but that estimation has doubled. Amazon already is listing job openings for the Joliet site online. Pay varies, but job descriptions show wages in the $13 to $15 range.

Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk, who was elected in April, said the project has been in the pipeline for some time.

The City Council in April approved a preliminary plat for the project, but officials at the time said they were restricted from specifying which e-commerce company would be moving in.

O’Dekirk said it didn’t come as a surprise that Amazon chose Joliet, because of its proximity to the Chicago market and easy access to interstates 80 and 55.

The online retail giant declined to disclose via email if the company was offered any

state incentives to come to Joliet. The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity did not respond to a request for comment Monday.

Amazon was not offered any local incentives, Greuling said.

Greuling said it’s great news that Amazon – which in January began collecting state sales tax from Illinois customers for the first time under a new state law – chose Illinois in spite of the sales tax law change.

“That was always the first big stumbling block, not only in coming to Illinois, but other states, as well,” he said.

Amazon spokeswoman Nina Lindsey said in an email the company will offer competitive wages and comprehensive benefits.

The company is ahead of two other major projects slated for the Laraway Crossings Business Park, including IKEA’s 1.4 million-square-foot distribution center and Cadence Premier Logistics’ corporate office move from Alsip to Joliet.

Century Tile and Carpet closing its Joliet location

Peter Collaros, president of Century Tile and Carpet, said Monday the company’s lease for 1395 N. Larkin Ave. expired recently and Century Tile and Carpet decided not to renew. He declined to

specify why the decision not to renew was made.

Collaros said Century Tile and Carpet has been in the Joliet location for just less than 10 years.

Store employees in Joliet

have been offered positions in the company’s 11 other locations in the Chicago region, including Bolingbrook and Naperville, Collaros said.

Customers in the Joliet

area will be welcomed to shop at the Bolingbrook or Naperville locations, according to a company news release.

Joliet Mayor Bob O’Dekirk declined Monday to comment on the store’s closure.

Trolley Barn restoration pegged as key Potential for commercial growth identified along DuPage riverfront

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – The almost 20,000 square feet of the old, dilapidated Trolley Barn is in the midst of an extreme makeover and a renewed dominant presence in downtown Plainfield.

The cavernous building at 24216 W. Lockport St. once served as a storage and maintenance shop for trolley cars along the old Aurora, Plainfield and Joliet Railway. Two large bays housed the trolley cars.

But now, demolition has begun for a transformation that village officials hope will turn it into the third major anchor for downtown development.

Paul Wojcieszak, president of Chicago-based Sheffield Safety and Loss Control, bought the building for a new business office. But now he’s stripping it down to its core identity to modernize its use while preserving its historical significance.

Transformation

From the outside, the Trolley Barn looks smaller than the other two recently redeveloped anchors of downtown, the Masonic Lodge and the old Opera House Block buildings – at least in height.

But inside, the structure looks more like a spacious, long-abandoned warehouse.

After trolley operations ceased in 1924, the property changed hands several times and was repurposed for storage and other maintenance operations.

According to village documents, the building was drastically remodeled in the 1940s and 1950s by the Railoc Company, which manufactured grain silo roofs and access systems.

Railoc occupied the structure until 1982.

He said updating the building to current codes added 35 to 40 percent to the renovation budget, which could exceed $1 million.

But Wojcieszak is receiving financial help from the village, which has given the project a $237,194 facade grant through downtown Plainfield tax increment financing district funds.

The grant will cover half the costs to the facade improvements.

The western addition, which has already been demolished, will be redesigned into a patio extending more than 3,000 square feet. The patio will be used by a future bar-restaurant and potentially for community gatherings.

With a security company taking up the eastern half of the Railoc addition, the bar and restaurant concept will move into much of the old maintenance space. The renovation of that area also includes a large

glass wall facing Lockport Street.

In addition, there will be room for three other tenants.

“We’re looking at all highend retail,” Wojcieszak said.

The original historic look of the building can’t be replicated, especially the barn doors, but Wojcieszak said an effort is being made to incorporate historic elements, including preserving as many bricks as

possible from the demolition and redevelopment, and repurposing them.

Entrance to downtown

Village officials are hoping the revitalized Trolley Barn will act as a welcoming presence to downtown from the west by attracting more commercial development to the riverfront area.

Mayor Michael Collins said

the plan is to develop the riverfront and connect the east and west sides of town through bike and pedestrian trails. Then, the Trolley Barn can become an entrance to downtown Plainfield.

“We view the riverfront as a destination and we want to develop that,” Collins said.

The historic Masonic Lodge building at 24050 W. Lockport St. and the old Opera House Block, or “Clock Tower,” building down the street, have been renovated using downtown Plainfield TIF grants as well.

Those corners didn’t find trouble drawing tenants to fill the commercial spaces on the first floors, and Collins hopes the same proves true for the Trolley Barn.

Another potential development in the area could be the extension of James Street to Main Street next to the Trolley Barn, Wojcieszak said. The village-owned building housing a scuba-diving business would be demolished to make way for the extension.

Village Planner Michael Garrigan said the extension of James Street, which Collins said has been discussed since 2000, depends on the realignment of Route 126. That’s because trucks would have a hard time taking a 90-degree turn from Lockport Street to James Street.

The realignment of Route 126 could allow Main Street to become a local road. But the Illinois Department of Transportation wants the village to first complete an extension of 143rd Street.

If Main Street transfers from state to local control, the Trolley Barn project’s Main Street facade – stalled because it encroaches upon the right of way – would be able to move forward.

“We hope that can happen, but right now we’re focused on the rest of the building,” Wojcieszak said.

D-86 to decide on search firm SUMMER for superintendent this week SAVINGS

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Joliet Public Schools District 86 Board inspectors may this week select a firm to search for a new superintendent.

After Superintendent Charles Coleman announced June 10 his plan to retire as of July 1, 2016, board inspectors reviewed six search firms that potentially could be the one to find candidates for his replacement.

Since Aug. 5, they have heard presentations from five, but still are gathering information, District 86 spokeswoman Sandy Zalewski said.

She said the board inspectors hope to select a search firm at Wednesday’s board meeting. The board will meet at 7 p.m. at the J.F.K. Admin-

istrative Center, 420 N. Raynor Ave. “I know last they spoke, they wanted to finish the process as soon as possible to get the search going right away,” Zalewski said.

The search firms board inspectors have been reviewing include: BWP & Associates from Evanston; Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates from Rosemont; Illinois Association of School Boards; McPherson & Jacobson LLC from Nebraska; Ray and Associates Inc. from Iowa; and School Exec Connect from Highland Park.

Coleman has said setting a retirement date was a “family decision.” His wife, who also is an educator, decided to retire, which led him to reflect on his personal and professional goals. Since Coleman

came to the district in 2011, officials have sought to improve it under a three-year strategic plan.

Since June, the district has gone through several changes in its administrative staff.

Ankhe Bradley, a former Rockford Public Schools District 205 educator, was hired to become the new assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.

Tony Villagomez, Christopher Latting, Araceli Ordaz and Brenda Reiter-Gorman became new principals at Isaac Singleton, Thomas Jefferson, Pershing and Farragut elementary schools, respectively.

Eleise Medina was chosen as the student services coordinator, and Doriane Woods became the new assistant principal at Pershing.

Romeoville delivery driver gets 12 years in heroin death case

Benjamin “Benji” Camunias, 28, was sentenced on the

first anniversary of the death of Peter Kucinski. On Aug. 10, 2014, Camunias and Kucinski’s girlfriend, Amy S h e m b e r g e r , Benjamin allegedly drove “Benji” to Oak Park Camunias and bought $100

worth of heroin, according to prosecutors.

After a bench trial in June, Camunias was found guilty of drug-induced homicide and delivery of drugs. Shemberger awaits a separate trial.

WILMINGTON – A crowd-funding campaign has been started to install a high-definition webcam at Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie to live-stream the movements of the bison set to be reintroduced there this fall.

Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie Supervisor Wade Spang announced in March he signed a decision notice to bring the bison to the Wilmington-area prairie, which is managed by the U.S. Forest Service.

The experiment will include a mix of young and mature animals to begin a small herd at the prairie.

The bison project was proposed in 2012 and is a partnership with the National Forest Foundation and other groups.

“This marks an exciting milestone for this project,” Greg Peters, communications director at the NFF, said in a news release.

The Joliet Region Chamber of Commerce & Industry and the Council for Working Women have announced that Tricia L. Simpson will receive the honor, according to a Tricia L. Chamber news Simpson release.

“She embodies this award, she really does,” Chamber President Mary Jaworski said.

The award, established in 1982, recognizes female leaders who demonstrate professional excellence, give back to their communities and assist other women in realizing their full potential. It is distributed by community organizations in-

ternationally and has been given by the Joliet Chamber since 1988.

“It’s a responsibility to receive this,” Simpson said.

Simpson joined the chamber’s board of directors eight years ago. She is the business co-chairwoman of the chamber’s Joliet Partners in Education group and also sits on its Education Committee.

Simpson is the Midwest public and government affairs manager for ExxonMobil Corp. in Channahon.

She has won multiple awards for her work in business and has been involved in numerous local organizations, including president of the Rialto Square Theater Foundation, president of the Channahon Economic Development Corporation, and vice president and 2014 gala co-chairwoman for Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center Foundation, among others.

Simpson said for her, the award is about the importance of supporting women and is a reminder of women’s ability to succeed when working together – something demonstrated to her by strong female mentors.

Chamber members nominated candidates for the honor in May and a panel of representatives selected Simpson, who is the chamber’s 28th recipient.

“We’re really grateful to have her in our community,” Jaworski said.

Simpson also is a member of the Rotary Club of Joliet and a mentor for the Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentor 2.0 program.

“We really got lucky when she got transferred to Joliet,” Jaworski said.

JOLIET – Police said a hidden camera was found in a bathroom Monday at the University of St. Francis in Joliet.

Joliet Deputy Police Chief Al Roechner said a “camera pen” was found about 10:30 a.m. Monday in a stall of the women’s restroom of the nursing college at 1550 Plainfield Road.

“A female employee found it and brought it back to the office. When they realized what it was they called the police,” Roechner said. “De-

tectives looked through the camera and were able to identify the subject who was recorded putting it up.”

Frederick E. Brown, 44, has been a USF janitorial employee since 2004, Roechner said.

Roechner said when investigators examined the camera they also found two videos of females in the bathroom of a private residence.

Brown was arrested on a misdemeanor charge of unauthorized videotaping for allegedly putting the camera in the school bathroom and two felony counts of unauthorized videotaping for the videos from the private residence.

“If the health department is going to be in there for a reasonable amount of time, you just need to make some regular investment. Otherwise, the building is going to start to deteriorate,” Dwyer said.

The 1924 building was originally constructed as an in-patient tuberculosis sanatorium, with nursing quarters housed on the second floor, said Vic Reato, spokesman for the health department.

The Will County Health Department moved there in the early 1970s, and several building additions followed,

he said. The multiple layers of construction exacerbate the inefficiencies of the building, he added.

Funding for major capital projects remains the No. 1 issue as county officials plan for a new courthouse, sheriff’s facility and other buildings. The goal is to consolidate offices.

County offices are scattered over several locations, which leads to confusion, inefficiencies and overcrowding.

It’s undecided how the county will ultimately pay for the slated county building projects, although Fricilone said officials are exploring options.

JOLIET – Amid a long list of capital projects and few funds to go around, Will County officials are shifting focus from building a new Will County Health Department building to maintaining the aging one – at least for now.

The department, at 501 Ella Ave., has serious structural and layout problems, but other projects, such as a new sheriff’s facility on Laraway Road and a new courthouse facility, must be prioritized, officials have said.

Wight & Co., a Darien-based architectural, engineering and construction firm, is developing a plan for the county to take care of the existing health department facility, said County Board member and Finance Committee Chairman Mike Fricilone, R-Homer Glen.

“They’re going to tell us what we can do if we’re going to be there for whatever period of time,” Fricilone said. “We know we need a new building eventually, but we have to prioritize.”

A 2010 facility needs analysis from Wight graded the building as “fair to poor,” citing issues with the heating and air system, inefficient windows and inadequate space. At the time, it was recommended that a new health department facility be rolled into the county’s long-term capital plan, said Jason Dwyer, project executive for Wight and Co. “That being said, [we recognize] there’s not endless amounts of money available to do these bigger-scaled projects, so we went there with an eye toward looking at, ‘How can you take a more proactive approach to dealing with some of the maintenance issues?’ ” Dwyer told Will County Board Capital Improvements Committee members last week.

Dwyer said the foundation is heaving, the HVAC system is nearing the end of its life, and water is infiltrating into the building’s lower level, causing

14 Judge: Slaying suspect

can hire fingerprint expert

JOLIET – A man who is acting as his own attorney for his second trial in a 2007 slaying will be allowed to hire a fingerprint expert.

Judge Carmen Goodman said Monday that Martin Elvis Gomez, 30, can use up to $5,000 in funds Martin Elvis from the Will Gomez County Public Defender’s office to retain an expert to examine the evidence and testify.

According to court filings, Gomez believes the expert could show a bloody palm print found on the storm door of the victim’s house was not from the victim but an intruder who was not Gomez.

The body of Joseph N. Salamie, 58, was found May 10, 2007, near a fence on his 10-acre farm on South Harlem Avenue, just north of Peotone Road, in Peotone Township. Gomez, who had once lived in a trailer on the farm, is accused of stabbing his former landlord 111 times, slitting his throat and stealing $1,200.

Salamie owned Sight and Sound Novelty Shop in Westmont and raised racehorses.

After a 2011 trial, Gomez was convicted of Salamie’s murder and sentenced to 55 years in prison. He received a separate 19-year prison sentence for trying to hire a gang member to kill an ex-girlfriend who testified against him.

But an appellate court found that although Judge Richard Schoenstedt warned Gomez about the risks of representing himself, he did not give required admonishments, and ordered a new trial in the murder case. As with Gomez’s previous court appearances, Goodman urged him to use the services of an attorney to challenge the three prosecutors assigned to his case.

“There’s a saying about a person who represents himself,” the judge said. “It’s rarely successful. I’ve never see it be successful on these charges you’re facing.”

During his first trial, Gomez used $5,000 in public funds to hire an entomologist to establish the time of Salamie’s death based on insect activity. The expert later testified as a witness for the prosecution.

Earlier this year, Gomez sought funds to hire an expert to refute cellphone records that showed he was near Salamie’s farm the night of the murder, but Goodman denied that request.

Barbara J. Bieritz, 92, of Batavia, and formerly of Geneva died Friday, August 7, 2015, at her home surrounded by family.

She was born January 14, 1923, in Joliet, IL. to Karl and Dorothy Hohmann. Barbara was a graduate of Joliet Township High School. She was married on May 31, 1941 to the late Russell P. Bieritz. She was a 63 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post #75, where she served as post President 3 times, and twice as District 7 President. Barbara held several jobs in the community, with 28 years at the Kane County Courthouse, where many of those years she served as head of the Jury Commission.

She is survived by three loving children, Gary (Deborah) Bieritz of Dallas, TX. David Bieritz of St Charles, and Jill (Randy) Wennlund of St. Charles.

Four grandchildren, Megan (Rick) Vandersluis, Blake (Jillian) Bieritz, Brooke Bieritz, and Karly (Brandon) Lawn. Also three great grandchildren, Grey Bieritz, Vivian Vandersluis, and Brayden Lawn.

Highway shootings prompt long-term police operation

CHICAGO – An increase in the number of gang-related shootings on or near Chicago-area expressways has prompted Illinois State Police to launch periodic efforts to flood the city’s highways with law enforcement officials.

In the past two years, one person has died and nearly two dozen have been wounded in shootings on area expressways, according to State Police.

The missions, called Operation Ryan’s Hope, involve State Police troopers and Cook County Sheriff’s police officers. They began in April 2014 on the Dan Ryan, because of an increase in shootings between 95th Street to Hubbard’s Cave, and have since been expanded to every one of the city’s expressways, the

“The goal of the operation is to aggressively patrol the roadways to help ensure the safety of motorists and improve overall roadway safety with the focus on seat belts, distracted driving, speeding and driving under the influence,” Sgt. Clare Pfotenhauer, a spokeswoman for the State Police, said.

Chicago schools budget banks on state funds

CHICAGO – Officials with cashstrapped Chicago Public Schools ratcheted up their plea for help from Springfield on Monday, detailing a proposed $5.7 billion operating budget that banks on nearly $500 million in pension relief from the state that might not get approved.

SPRINGFIELD – Federal court records unsealed Monday indicate former Rep. Aaron Schock was issued a grand jury subpoena seeking campaign and congressional records the day before he resigned his Illinois congressional seat.

The records released by U.S. District Judge Sue Myerscough also reveal Schock in April filed an emergency motion to quash the subpoena, calling it “oppressive and unreasonable,” and accusing the government of misconduct.

During the sentencing hearing, Will County assistant state’s attorneys Michael Knick and David Borenstein presented evidence from a December 2010 heroin-related incident in which Camunias and a young woman allegedly drove to Cook County to buy heroin from Camunias’s dealer.

When the 19-year-old woman overdosed and became unresponsive, Camunias left her in her car and went to get help from a friend, who could not revive her. She was found by emer-

gency responders on the ground next to her car in a Bolingbrook neighborhood.

No one was charged in the case because the police investigation was not completed until after the three-year statute of limitations for drug-induced homicide had expired, according to a statement from the Will County State’s Attorney’s Office.

“Benjamin Camunias is learning the hard way about the consequences of getting involved in heroin-related drug deals,” State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in the news release. “Heroin is an extraordinarily dangerous narcotic that kills users indiscriminately. The message is absolutely clear: If you are responsible for delivering this poison, you’re on the hook for any user who dies from an overdose.”

On January 15, 1956 she married Ray Rutter in Joliet, Illinois.

Mrs. Rutter was a homemaker and had been a teachers’ aide at Rockford, Illinois schools and later at Fort Madison schools.

Mrs. Rutter enjoyed working with impaired children, reading, crossword puzzles, gardening, working outside, sewing, knitting

and spending time with her family.

She was an avid supporter of her husband and his music.

She is survived by her loving family, her husband of 59 years, Ray Rutter of Fort Madison; two daughters, Kim (David) Goble and Sandra (Jeff Blanchard) Rutter-Wells both of Burlington; one son, Michael (Renee) Rutter of Buckeye, Arizona; five grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Lois Mednick of Joliet, Illinois and Shirley Demiston of California and nieces and nephews.

Mike’s hobbies included metal detecting, music, and fishing.

HOUSTON – A Houston woman being held captive by a man she once had been in a relationship with sent a text to her mother saying she was being held at gunpoint and pleading for help before the man fatally shot her, six children and her husband.

Valerie Jackson’s mother called the Harris County Sheriff’s Office in Houston. Deputies eventually forced their way into the home where a man with a violent criminal history, David Conley, had held the family captive Saturday but retreated when Conley fired on them. Police shooting, protests put Ferguson back on edge

By JIM SALTER and ALAN SCHER ZAGIER The Associated Press FERGUSON, Mo. – Ferguson was a community on edge again Monday, a day after a protest marking the anniversary of Michael Brown’s death was punctuated with gunshots and police critically wounded a black 18-year-old accused of opening fire on officers.

Police, protesters and people who live and work in the St. Louis suburb were bracing for what another night of demonstrations along West Florissant Avenue might bring. The thoroughfare was the site of massive protests and rioting after Brown was fatally shot last year in a confrontation with a white Ferguson officer.

“Of course, I’m worried,” said Sandy Sansevere, a retired health care worker who volunteers at the retail store operated by the nonprofit group I Love Ferguson, which was formed after Brown’s death to promote the community. “What scares me

are the guns.”

Several hundred people had gathered by 9 p.m. Monday, chanting and holding signs. There were no apparent signs of conflict.

Earlier in the day, the father of the suspect who was shot called the police version of events “a bunch of lies.” He said two girls who were with his son told him he was unarmed and had been drawn into a dispute involving two groups of young people.

St. Louis County Executive Steve Stenger declared a state of emergency, which authorizes county Police Chief Jon Belmar to take control of police emergency management in and around Ferguson.

Protests spilled outside of Ferguson. Almost 60 protesters were arrested around midday Monday for blocking the entrance to the federal courthouse in downtown St. Louis. Authorities planned to release them on a promise to appear later in court.

Protesters later briefly blocked Interstate 70 during the late afternoon rush hour,

with an additional undetermined number of arrests made.

That protest, like other commemoration events over the past few days, was largely peaceful and somber. But on Sunday, several hundred people gathered in the street on West Florissant, ignoring an officer on a bullhorn repeatedly warning them to get to the sidewalk or face arrest. Eventually, a few lobbed glass bottles and rocks at officers. One officer was hospitalized with cuts to the face after being hit with a rock. Two others had minor injuries after protesters sprayed them with pepper spray.

As tensions escalated, several gunshots suddenly rang out from the area near a strip of stores, including some that had been looted moments earlier. Belmar believes the shots came from about six different shooters. What prompted the shooting was not clear, but Belmar said two groups had been feuding.

Unless, of course, Trump is part of a conspiracy set up by the Democrats to disrupt the Republican campaign.

However, I sure would like to know where the Fox people got their questions from – perhaps the Republicans are working on their own conspiracy.

With the great cooperation of the hosts from the University of St. Francis, hundreds of area students received free medical and dental exams and free school supplies. This fantastic event will enable a great multitude of our local students to start the upcoming 2015-16 school year in a very positive direction.

God bless all volunteers that made this day unforgettable in many ways.

Plenty of crises to come in state budget impasse There are those who believe strongly that one side or the other is “winning” the latest and perhaps greatest statehouse impasse in Illinois history.

I think it’s too early to judge. And, frankly, I think everyone is going to end up losing here anyway.

As you know, the governor has refused to negotiate a budget until the Democrats accede to his demands to essentially neuter the power of labor unions. The Democrats won’t ever back down from his more radical proposals, including forbidding school teachers from negotiating their own salaries.

Many who think Gov. Bruce Rauner is winning point to the fact that about 80 percent of the state’s General Revenue Fund’s budget is being spent under court order or signed legislation.

State employee wages and pensions, Medicaid-reliant hospitals in Cook County, part of the state child care program, debt service, transfers to local governments and human service programs tied to federal

consent decrees all are being funded. In addition, Rauner signed the K-12 budget, so schools are being paid on time.

In addition, the House is expected, as I write this, to pass legislation appropriating about $5 billion in federal passthrough money.

So, Rauner has managed to avoid wearing the jacket for any devastating consequences of a state shutdown because there hasn’t really been a shutdown.

But there are plenty of crises to come.

For instance, the state’s Monetary Award Program can’t distribute money to 125,000 poor college students without an appropriation. As of Friday afternoon, Western Illinois University was planning to inform its students that they would have to replace that state aid with other sources or out of their own pockets.

Mark Brown at the Chicago Sun-Times has been doing a great job documenting the impact of Rauner’s child care program changes, which is wreaking havoc throughout the state.

VIEWS Rich Miller There also are serious problems with federal grants matched with state dollars. If there’s no state appropriation by the end of September, the state could lose a whole lot of money in the next federal fiscal year.

And what about nursing homes? The federal Medicaid decree doesn’t cover them, and neither does the “federal only” appropriations bill. But many rely heavily on Medicaid. Are we gonna see old folks kicked to the curb soon?

There’s also more than $3 billion in non-federal human service appropriations that can’t be spent. We definitely will see some all-too-real horror stories very soon.

Then there are all the fiscal problems in Chicago. The city’s media tend to give the mayor a whole lot of credence in disputes with governors, and Mayor Rahm Emanuel has been cranking up the heat on

Rauner lately, so that’s a major pressure point.

Not to mention that former Republican Gov. Jim Edgar publicly chided Rauner the other day for not dropping his more extreme anti-union demands and focusing on the budget. That attack could give cover to pro-union Republican legislators to break with Rauner eventually.

What Rauner’s been doing so far kinda reminds me of those movies where somebody gets chased through a house.

One door is breached, so the person being chased runs into another room and locks the door. That door is broken, so he runs into another room and puts a chair in front of the door. Etc. That’s kind of what Rauner has been doing with state dollars. The spending has given him breathing room to last another day.

But Rauner can’t just escape through a window. He runs the government. Eventually, he very well could run out of doors to lock.

Right now, I think voters are giving the new guy the benefit of the doubt. Add those

who approve of his job performance to the undecideds in the last statewide poll we’ve seen, and you have a 57 percent majority.

That could change quickly, however, when pain starts being felt.

Rather than focus on winning or losing, I really wish the state’s leaders – all of them – would start focusing on solving problems.

You want to bring down local government costs in order to ease the burden of a property tax freeze? You want to help employers with workers’ comp costs? You want a more equitable and fair way of drawing legislative district maps? OK, then find a way to do these things that both sides can live with.

The governor should stop trying to stick it to the unions, and the Democrats absolutely need to help him come up with some alternative ideas.

Forget about “winning.”

Try governing.

“I was playing nose tackle in youth football, and I kept knocking the center back into the quarterback,” the Joliet West senior inside linebacker recalled Monday, the opening day of fall practice around the

state.

“The officials came to me and said I had to start lining up farther back so I wouldn’t keep doing that. I thought, ‘Isn’t that what you’re supposed to do?’ ” Getting to the ball and hitting people are what the 6-foot3, 245-pound Ben-Israel does best.

“He is a beast,” Tigers coach Jason Aubry said. “He’s strong, fast, he covers the field,

he has long arms. He also has a 3.8 GPA, and he’s a great kid.

He’s a remarkable individual.”

West qualified for the playoffs for the first time last season and lost to Oswego, 31-7, in the opening round.

This year, the Tigers will play in the SouthWest Suburban Blue for the last time, because they will move into the Southwest Prairie next fall.

Ben-Israel is definitive in what he wants to see happen his se-

nior year.

“Our goal is to win the conference championship in the last year in our league,” he said. “Everybody here is ready for that. We have to leave with a big bang. I’m still mad at us moving because this is the best conference in the state, and we want to compete against the best.”

Ben-Israel was an offensive and defensive lineman until he enrolled at West.

“The first time I played linebacker was freshman year, and I loved it,” he said. “I like to hit people, run all over the field and cause fumbles.”

Ben-Israel played last season at about 210 pounds. He also is an accomplished wrestler.

“They made me drop weight last year, and I was wrestling at 182,” he said. “When the

Mary Jane Sporar was one of a kind VIEWS Dick Goss Jim Stefanich, the No. 1 name in Joliet bowling history, often was referred to as “Joliet’s Ten-Pin Joltin’ Joy” in the sports pages of The Herald-News.

Any southpaw worth his or her salt was termed a “lethal lefty.”

That’s because that’s how Mary Jane Sporar described them.

Mary Jane died Friday at age 95. For more than 57 years, she wrote regular bowling columns for The Herald-News. That made her the longest-running newspaper bowling columnist anywhere.

What the late Don Ladas was to the local bowling community via his work with WJOL Radio and his Will County Sportsman publication, Mary Jane was to The

Herald-News.

Back in the day, Mary Jane and her husband, Stan, made regular evening stops in The Herald-News office. Forms with bowling scores from the various local leagues were dropped off at our office. Mary Jane would scour them to see who belonged on that week’s honor roll, or perhaps deserved mention in that week’s column.

The time she put into compiling those top scores and writing her columns – remember “Skirting the Maples” for women and “Woodfellers” for men? – was incredible. She went above and beyond because local bowling was her passion, and she wanted to share the information she had accumulated with everyone in the bowling community.

Jill Postma, Mary Jane’s daughter, called me Monday morning and recalled the days of yore.

I remember how proud she and her family were, and how much she appreciated that award.

She was a gift to this community. We may never have another one like her.

Mary Jane’s visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Carlson-Holmquist-Sayles Funeral Home, with memorial services scheduled there at 7 p.m.

“So I started eating right and putting on the muscle I had lost, and I surprised myself. I got on the scale today and weighed 245. I’ll probably play this season at somewhere in the 230s. You have to look scary on the football field.

Then I’ll wrestle at 220 this winter.”

Along with scary, Ben-Israel provides leadership on the field and accomplishment in the classroom.

“I’ve been taught since I was little that if I get a C, it feels like getting an F,” he said. “I got one B last semester. I was trying hard and finally got an A in English, and then I got a B in trig[onometry]. I could have gotten an A if I had gotten a 92 on the final.

I said, ‘Man, what did I do on that final?’

“But this year, I have the

right courses. I’m going to keep a 4.0.”

Aubry said some large colleges, including a couple of the service academies, have shown interest in Ben-Israel, although no official offers have come in yet.

“I feel everyone is sleeping on me so far,” Ben-Israel said.

“But the thing I want them to

watch is my team and what it is doing. I’d like to get a scholarship to a big school, where there’s so much football spirit, but the most important thing will be to get a good education.”

Times have changed in high school football. With the 25 days in summer that teams are allowed to have contact

with coaches, opening day of fall practice is nothing like it used to be.

“We used to have to explain everything on Day 1,” Aubry said. “Now we can hit the ground running. Ninety-eight percent of the guys out here have been here all summer.”

“The summer’s been hard, but it’s been a fun hard,”

Ben-Israel said. “The seniors have worked hard. We knew the juniors coming up had talent. We had to get them here and show them how we work.

Now we know we’re ready to go.

“Our offensive line is huge, and our defensive line has taller guys and some shorter, but they’re quick and violent. Our defense is good. We have guys with good hands who can run. We just have to make sure we don’t take any breaks.”

“Every guy on our defense is 100 percent all in,” Aubry said. “That’s what it takes.”

For now, Ben-Israel has plenty of running and hitting in mind. He smiled when asked what he will be doing when his playing days are over.

“You’re going to laugh, but I want to chase storms,” he said. “I want to be a meteorologist or environmental scientist, but something that involves chasing storms. I’ve always been interested in that.”

While the offense will no doubt look much different this season, expect to see another hard-nosed defense that will grudgingly give up both yards and points.

“We’re hoping to open up some eyes this year,” said senior Tyler Schiemann, who is back on the defensive line and will play at an end. “A lot of people don’t have faith in us and are always putting us down since we’ll have a lot of new guys playing.

“We’re always pushing each other, and it doesn’t matter where you’re at on the team and whether you’re playing or not playing. We know that it’s definitely possible to repeat. If we just stick together as a team and keep working hard, I think we have a really good shot.

“I definitely like the friendships and the bond that we have. Everyone

is very close, and we always do a lot of things together, and we all have each others’ backs for everything, no matter what. We have to work hard in practice, and everyone has to put in the effort and push through the hard times. I have faith in the team, in our coaches and in our fans.”

While the Celtics have many key leaders back to show the way – including running back Richie Warfield, receiver Mike Markasovic and linebacker Brendan O’Hara – one of the keys will be how well new players step in for some of last year’s standouts.

Senior Stephen Simowitz has perhaps the biggest shoes to fill, succeeding Hunniford – last season’s Herald-News Player of the Year – at quarterback.

“Justin was a great role model, and he really showed me how to do it,” Simowitz said. “We’re two different types of players, but we play the same position; so I’ll have to do some of the same things, and we’ll see how it goes.

“I hope that we can do what we did last year. We have the players and the team that can do it. By the end of the regular season, we’ll have played the best of the best, so there’s nothing that we won’t see in the playoffs, and that really helps.

“This year’s group has a lot of heart and real passion for the game. We really know what we need to do and really work hard, and I like that. We have to be on the same page on offense and defense – and if we can do that, we’ll be fine.”

MORRIS – After an early mishap involved all the others running in the top five, John Nutley, who had been in fourth place, led the final 25 laps Friday night to score his second late-model feature victory of the season at Grundy County Speedway.

Larry Schuler was leading, David Einhaus was second, Eddie Hoffman third and Brandon Clubb fifth when the accident occurred. Hoffman recovered and finished second behind Nutley.

Scott Koerner was third, Einhaus fourth, Joe Vinachi fifth and Schuler sixth.

Hoffman set the fast time at 15.239 seconds. Schuler won the first heat, followed by Vinachi and James Gregait. Koerner claimed the second heat, with Hoffman second and Clubb third.

Tom Knippenberg won the 25-lap Mid-American feature for the fifth time this season, beating Kevin Murphy by 0.676 seconds. Kenny Benson was third, followed by Luke Baldwin, Jim Olson and John Ventrello.

Matt Clemens set the fast time of 16.601. Jim Kachel, Marty McKinney and Cody Clubb were the top three in the first heat.

Knippenberg, Ventrello and Chuck Yuris took the top spots in the second heat.

Cheryl Hryn claimed the 33lap street stock feature, followed

by Jake Bradley, Rita Fields, Seth Blommaert, Christy Penrod and John Ventrello III. Seth Blommaert set the fast time at 17.613. Bill Serviss won the first heat ahead of Michael Moore and Spencer Leake. Alex Clubb won the second heat, with Hryn second and Tim Stewart third.

Bryce Leake captured the 15-lap 4-cylinder feature. Jim Gross, Derek Vertheen, Ricky Wilson, Alex Gay and Kyle Royster rounded out the top six. Matt Baikie set the fast time at 19.901.

Leake, Vertheen and Jacob Theissen were 1-2-3 in the first heat.

Chris Mihalski won the second heat ahead of Will Shepherd and Dylan Marshall. Gross, Leake and Mark Sontag Jr. took the top three spots in the third heat.

NEW LENOX – Things definitely looked a bit different for Providence’s football team Monday as it officially kicked off the start of its 2015 season.

The defending Class 7A state champions no longer have the likes of quarterback Justin Hunniford, receivers Miles Boykin and Nate Vejvoda, defensive linemen Jake Rost and Luis Vasquez and linebackers Jimmy Sharkey and Emmet Trost, all of whom received all-Chicago Catholic League Blue Division honors.

But while those graduation losses are significant, coach Mark Coglianese’s Celtics still have plenty of talented players back from last year’s squad, which went 13-1 and captured the school’s 10th championship in the sport, including its first in 10 years.

So as Providence begins preparations for a rugged schedule that features home games with Joliet Catholic Academy, St. Rita and Loyola Academy and contests at Oswego, Mount Carmel and Brother Rice, there’s the belief that although the season will be challenging, there’s no reason the program can’t contend for another title.

“Last year a lot of people said that we were all Miles and Justin, but I think that we were 11 guys on every play,” said senior Tom Younker, a returnee along the offensive line who will play at tackle. “You can’t run a team with just one guy. Whether we had them back or not, I think that we can do it again if we all get on the same page and everyone keeps working hard at practice each day.

“It felt good to win another title, and that was a big deal, but now we have a target on our back and we know that.

But I love it, and think it’s great since everyone wants a piece of us. We have very respectable opponents, and we always get good games in the Catholic League, and it prepares you for the IHSA playoffs.

“I like how everyone on offense comes to practice and works their butts off every day because everyone knows that there’s no guaranteed spots and they want to be in the starting lineup. We’re all close friends on and off the field, and we all have each others’ backs and work hard together.

After getting it done last year, it gave us confidence that this team can do it again since we have the coaches and the players.”

Much of the attention on last year’s team was focused on the offense, which scored 31 or more points in 11 occasions. Yet the Celtics’ defense – which

By KEVIN FISHBAIN kfishbain@chicagofootball.com BOURBONNAIS – With Kevin White doing some light work off to the side on Monday, his wide receiver teammates put on a show as the offense got back on track.

Alshon Jeffery made four notable catches with Kyle Fuller in coverage.

On one, Jeffery slipped and still caught a throw from behind him. He had a touchdown in the back middle of the end zone and beat Fuller deep down the left sideline for a long gain.

“Today, on a hot, humid day like this was today, I thought he did a heck of a job of competing each period,” wide receivers coach Mike Groh told reporters.

“When he was in there, it was full-go. It was as hard as he could go, as much as he could give us offensively. [He] made plays. He’s gotta be that guy that Jay [Cutler] can count on in those sticky situations, and I think he’s becoming that.”

Marquess Wilson wasn’t to be outdone, as he had the highlight of the day with a one-handed catch down the right sideline.

“He made a great catch today, didn’t he?” Groh said. “Making that play in a two-minute situation for us. And I think he’s had a productive camp. [He] really picked up where he was last summer.”

White and backup quarterback David Fales were seen doing some jogging and other movements on one of the practice fields, which is more work than they’ve done since getting to Bourbonnais.

“He’s making progress,” John Fox said of White. “As you may or may not have seen, he was out there running today … on hard ground, grass running.

We’ve got a plan for him, and he’s making progress.”

Groh said getting White some action in a preseason game is “probably not going to be the case” but referenced Odell Beckham’s rookie season as an example of a player who missed the preseason and still was productive as a rookie.

The Bears remain in no rush to get White on the field.

“He’s not played football in 7½ or eight weeks, so it would be crazy for us to throw him back out there,” Fox said.

Offense to fit its players: Running backs coach Stan Drayton explained what has impressed him most about offensive coordinator Adam Gase.

“The thing I love about his offense is that he fits his talent,” Drayton said.

“The offense is designed around the talent that he has available to him. That’s the sign of a great coordinator. And it’s the sign of a guy who knows exactly what he’s doing. Obviously, the players respect that. We’re not asking them to do things that they’re not physically capable of doing.”

Quick hits: Michael Ola (knee) was back at practice Monday, albeit in a limited fashion. … Tracy Porter had a pick-six on a ball from Jimmy Clausen. CHICAGO – Chris Sale was back in All-Star form, and Avisail Garcia homered twice to drive in four runs as the White Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels, 8-2, Monday night.

Tyler Flowers added a solo shot to back Sale (10-7), who rebounded with a gem after allowing 14 earned runs and 18 hits in 101⁄3 innings while losing his previous two outings. The lanky lefthander didn’t allow a run – or more than one baserunner in an inning – until Johnny Giavotella drove in two with a double in the seventh.

Sale returned for the eighth but was replaced by Nate Jones with one out after hitting Kole Calhoun with a pitch. Sale was charged with two runs and five hits. He struck out seven.

Angels starter Matt Shoemaker (58) had thrown 19 consecutive scoreless innings before Melky Cabrera’s sacrifice fly to the warning track drove in Adam Eaton to put the Sox ahead, 1-0, in the first.

Shoemaker hadn’t allowed a run in his last three starts, but was tagged for seven on nine hits in 52⁄3 innings in this one as Los Angeles dropped its seventh straight on the road.

Garcia had his third career multihomer game to reach 11 for the season, and his three-run drive was the big blow as the Sox sent nine hitters to the plate and pulled away with a four-run sixth. The right fielder has four home runs in his last six games after connecting for just two in his previous 48.

Sale set the tone as he allowed no more than a single baserunner in any of the first six innings – including a 13-pitch walk to Mike Trout in the fourth. Sale retired the Angels 1-2-3 twice.

Difficult to treat, side effects that last People with oral, head and neck cancers find support at Morris Hospital If you go

By JEANNE MILLSAP Shaw Media Correspondent MORRIS – Treating cancers of the head and neck can be difficult, and side effects may be lasting.

Sharon Bernico, a Morris Hospital & Healthcare Centers radiation therapy nurse, said some cancer survivors have little visible evidence of their surgeries and radiation treatments. Others, she added, have had radical resections or skin problems because of the radiation.

“To go through these cancers is tough,” Bernico said. “I think it’s one of the toughest to go through, but it usually has a wonderful outcome.”

Bernico and speech therapist Ali Bute are co-facilitators of the Oral and Head and Neck Cancer Support Group at Morris Hospital. It began a year ago at the request of Bernico’s patients.

“Just about everyone comes away from treatment with problems with swallowing, dry mouths and foods they will never eat again,” Bernico said. “I think the guys wanted to know there were other people out there who were going through the same thing they were.”

All members of the support group are men. The National Cancer Institute states that twice as many men are affected, but Bernico said she sees a much higher ratio at her clinic.

According Dr. Scott DiVenere of ENT Surgical Consultants of Joliet and Morris, these are cancers that originate in any areas of the head and neck except the spine and skull.

They include malignancies of the thyroid; salivary glands; mucosal surfaces in the mouth, nasal areas and throat; the tongue; voice box; and bone – even muscle and skin if they go deep enough.

mation is a risk factor for the typical head and neck cancer,” DiVenere said. “Major risks are alcohol, tobacco, and especially the combination of the two, as well as chronic acid reflux.”

Poor dental hygiene also can increase the risk of these cancers, he said, as can the human papilloma virus.

Symptoms can include a lump or sore that does not heal, a sore throat that doesn’t go away, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, a white or red

patch inside the mouth, swelling of the jaw and bleeding or pain in the mouth, as well as trouble breathing or speaking, headaches, blocked sinuses, nose bleeds, eye swelling, pain in the face, trouble hearing or ringing in the ears.

Bill McGrath, 68, of rural Minooka, originally dismissed the symptoms of his tonsil squamous cell cancer.

“A lump grew on the side of my neck,” McGrath said. “I kind of dismissed it at first.

I always had problems with

my ears, and I thought it had something to do with that.”

McGrath said he didn’t tell anyone the true diagnosis except his wife, until he learned more about the treatment and prognosis. He still attends the support group.

DiVenere was McGrath’s physician and recommended surgery and radiation therapy. Overwhelmed with the diagnosis, McGrath said he immediately wanted to talk to the head and neck cancer survivors in the support group, where he found information and support.

McGrath’s cancer was diagnosed one year ago. He had surgery in August, then 37 radiation treatments after that. The cancer appears to be gone, but the effects of treatments are not.

Along with dry mouth and some difficulty eating certain meats, occasionally a bone shard will appear through McGrath’s gums. Still, McGrath said he is well enough to cut his own grass – all 3½ acres of it – and fish and trap shoot

with his wife.

Papillary cancer survivor Barton Vest, 73, of Gardner said he was one of the group’s charter members. Vest’s cancer was diagnosed in 2011, after he had trouble swallowing.

Vest underwent two surgeries – one for each side of his neck – and now has an ear-to-ear scar. He then was given radioactive iodine tablets to destroy any remaining cancer cells. But the cancer returned.

Another surgery and 33 radiation treatments later, Vest said the cancer appears to be gone. However, Vest now also has a dry mouth, no feeling in his jaw and trouble swallowing. That’s why the support group is valuable.

“With the support group, everybody had the radiation, and you’re talking to people who know what it’s like,” Vest said.

In addition to the otolaryngologist and pathologist, treating head and neck cancers may require medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, prosthodontists, dentists, plastic surgeons, dietitians, physical therapists and speech therapists.

DiVenere said recovery can take six months to a year – especially with advanced cancer – so patients can feel medically overloaded. This is why a support group is a good idea, he said.

Not for bridge players – it is much better to reach the right contract without using a bidding convention than to get to the wrong spot after using a convention. However, this week we are looking at the useful New Minor Forcing. After one of a minor – one of a major – one no-trump, if responder rebids two of the unbid minor, it is artificial, guaranteeing at least game-invitational values and asking opener for more information.

The first priority for opener is to show three-card support for responder’s major. If he cannot do that, he indicates four cards in the unbid major – as in this deal.

West leads the diamond queen against four hearts. How should South plan the play?

If South had bid two spades over two diamonds, North would have continued with three hearts, natural and game-forcing, in case South also held four hearts. Usually a 4-4 fit is better than a 5-3.

South has one loser in each suit.

He must eliminate his diamond loser immediately, discarding it on a club winner in his own hand. Also, as declarer is establishing his club suit, he needs a fast hand entry, which is the diamond king.

So, South must win the first trick with dummy’s diamond ace and play a club.

West takes the trick and leads another diamond, but declarer wins in his hand, discards dummy’s last diamond on a high club, and plays on trumps.

has led to fewer complications, and the average hospital stay is shorter and recovery is quicker compared to traditional surgery.

Why is appendectomy so widely used? For one thing, if untreated, an infected appendix can burst. A potentially deadly infection can spread throughout the abdomen and into the bloodstream, requiring complicated emergency surgery. Prompt removal of the appendix before it bursts helps avoid this dangerous situation.

Also, we don’t know what the appendix does – or if it does anything at all.

Removing it has no negative effects on a person’s health. In fact, sometimes when surgeons have to perform abdominal surgery for other reasons (like an inflamed gallbladder), they remove a healthy appendix while they’re at it. That eliminates the possibility of appendicitis developing in the future.

Everyone who has surgery also receives antibiotics.

These drugs treat the infection within the appendix, and they reduce the risk of widespread infection if the appendix has already burst as the surgeons are preparing to operate.

In Europe, there is a trend of treating some cases of appendicitis just with antibiotics, not surgery, and then closely observing the patient.

Appendectomy is performed only if needed.

In the U.S., this strategy is followed when the patient is too ill to undergo surgery. But it hasn’t yet been widely adopted in more routine cases of appendicitis.

Dear Dr. K: Why do doctors remove the appendix when someone has appendicitis? Don’t we need this organ?

Dear Reader: Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. This small, fingerlike tube hangs from the lower right side of the large intestine. It usually becomes inflamed because of an infection or blockage.

The condition is quite common; it affects one in every 500 people in the United States each year. (I’ve put an illustration of an inflamed appendix on my website, askdoctork.com.)

An appendicitis attack usually begins with abdominal pain that starts just above the navel and moves to the lower right side of the abdomen. Many people also experience loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting and lowgrade fever. Other symptoms can include abdominal swelling, pain when the right side of the abdomen is touched and inability to pass gas.

Once a person is diagnosed with appendicitis (or even strongly suspected of having it), prompt surgery usually is performed.

Surgical removal of the appendix is called “appendectomy,” and it has been the go-to treatment for appendicitis since the late 1800s.

It is the most common reason for emergency abdominal surgery in the U.S. That’s true in children as well as adults.

In the 1990s, surgeons began to perform the procedure with an instrument called a laparoscope. This is a flexible tube with a light, video camera, and cutting instruments at the end of it.

The instrument allows the surgeon to see inside the abdomen, find the inflamed appendix, cut it free and pull it out of the body.

Removing the appendix with a laparoscope allows for several smaller cuts in the wall of the abdomen.

This contrasts with the traditional surgical approach, which involves one large incision.

Dear Abby: A family member has recently lost more than 100 pounds running and doing yoga. She looks fantastic. Yoga is the focus of her life now, and she posts daily photos of herself on social media. In many of them she is scantily clad and in poses some might consider risque.

Whenever she attends family gatherings or outings to public places, she wants to take pictures of herself in various poses.

This makes some of the people she’s with uncomfortable. She says she doesn’t care what others think, but there have been quite a few negative comments about this, and people have “unfollowed” her on social media. Others think it’s OK for her to do her thing.

What is your opinion on this? – Gagging in Georgia Dear Gagging: Your relative deserves praise for having adopted a healthier lifestyle. However, because she doesn’t care what others think, any family member who finds her pictures too risque for their comfort should quit following her on social media.

Dear Abby: My daughter, “Kelly,” and I are arguing over whether she should take her trophies with her when she moves out on her own.

I feel that when kids move out, they should take all their belongings. Kelly thinks I should keep the 10 to 15 trophies she won in beauty pageants when she was younger.
