vshanker@shawmedia.com ROMEOVILLE – Carnival rides, magic shows and attractions like laser tag had residents of the village and surrounding communities dashing around Village Park and the Romeoville Recreation Center grounds Saturday for RomeoFest.

The four-day festival that ended Sunday is expected to have attracted more than 30,000 people to the two locations off Romeo Road. With the new additions of laser tag and a video game truck, the village has planned for the festival to become an increasingly fun event for family entertainment.

“It’s very close to home,” said Ernestina Amedeka, who lives right across the street

from Village Park. “I have friends that come from other places just for this.”

Amedeka’s daughter, 10-year-old Deborah Amedeka, said her brother’s birthday is around the same date, so the family has its own celebration at RomeoFest.

“It’s all really fun,” Deborah said.

RomeoFest has transformed from a small carnival to a multi-stage event. Carnival rides were on the grounds of the recreation center, and vendors, the beer tent and stage area were on and around Village Park.

“It’s definitely changed,” said Crest Hill resident Dan Mueller, who brought his two nephews and has been coming to RomeoFest for the past five years.

“I really appreciate Romeoville putting this on. They bring out all the stops.”

Brandon Klinetobe Romeoville resident Mueller noticed several changes while he has been coming to RomeoFest, including a larger venue and the festival grounds have been fenced up with security to discourage fights and other criminal activity.

“It’s really changing for the kids and it should,” Mueller said.

Will County authorities investigating four unrelated deaths over weekend

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Authorities are investigating four separate deaths this weekend – one that appears to be the result of a homicide police are calling an “isolated incident.”

A 55-year-old man was slain in Romeoville, while three other deaths appear to be accidents, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Richard Pollack, 55, of Romeoville, was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m. Sunday at Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital and “appears to be the victim of a homicide,” a deputy coroner reported. Romeoville police are investigating Pollack’s death.

At about 2 a.m. Sunday, Romeoville police reported to a call of a large fight in progress on the 400 block of Tallman Avenue.

“Several of the participants were armed with baseball bats,” Chief Mark Turvey said.

Officers arrived to find Pollack seriously injured. He was transported to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:05 a.m.

Two male suspects were located in the area and taken into

custody, Turvey said. They had not been formally charged as of 5:30 p.m.

Turvey said the reason the fight began was still being investigated Sunday evening.

A news release from the department states police “want[ed] to reassure the public that there is no public safety risk due to this incident. The case is an isolated incident.”

Three other deaths that occurred over the weekend also are being investigated by local authorities.

Vaidas Varpucanskis, 42, of Mokena, died Saturday morning while riding his bicycle on the Hickory Creek Junction Bike Trail in Frankfort Township.

Lt. Tracy Chapman said witnesses told Will County Forest Preserve Police shortly before 10:55 a.m. Varpucanskis was riding between the junction and Brightway Court when he passed a jogger.

“He announced he was coming on the left but another bike was oncoming,” Chapman said.

“The bikes did not make contact with each other but [Varpucanskis] lost control trying to avoid it and hit his head.”

Passers-by called 911 and performed CPR before Var-

pucanskis was taken to Silver Cross Hospital, Chapman said.

Varpucanskis was pronounced dead at 11:30 a.m.

Kevin Hrncir, 45, of Plainfield, died following a single-vehicle motorcycle crash at Caton Ridge and South Ridge roads in Joliet.

Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said about 8 a.m. Saturday, Hrncir was taking his 2014 Harley Davidson for an oil change when the bike struck the raised center median and landed in the southbound lane. Hrncir was not wearing a helmet, Roechner said.

Hrncir died at Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center at 7:27 p.m. Saturday, according to the coroner’s office.

Thomas Knepper, 68, of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, was struck by a car as he was cutting grass Sunday in Manhattan Township, the coroner’s office reported.

Knepper was on a lawnmower in the 23000 block of Route 52 when he was struck by a southbound vehicle that left the road, according to the coroner’s office. Knepper was pronounced dead at the scene at 1:25 p.m.

Illinois State Police are investigating the crash.

“I come here every year,” Jordan said. “My favorite ride is the Freak Out ride.”

The Mega Pass was popular with parents because it allowed kids to ride an unlimited amount of times.

“It’s a very good deal,” said Romeoville resident Brandon Klinetobe, noting that the amount he probably would have spent for rides taken by his children is greater than the price of the pass.

“I really appreciate Romeoville putting this on,” Klinetobe said. “They bring out all the stops.”

Young man’s legacy lives on through charity fundraiser

Sadly, their friendship didn’t last long. Mammosser, a Joliet Catholic Academy student and football player, was diagnosed with brain cancer and died in 2012. He was supposed to graduate from JCA last year like Salata, who now attends Western Illinois University, but never did.

Before Mammosser died, a fundraiser called Mammopalooza was formed to help financially support him through his struggles with brain cancer. He died before the fundraiser. But his family and friends decided to continue running it to support charities and keep Mammosser’s memory alive. “[Mammosser’s parents] have a lot of support and they took it really hard. Everyone did,” Salata said. “So I think that helped. But, also, I think they knew that you can’t take anything back. You might as well give as much as you can now to help rather than sit around and do absolutely nothing.”

Organizers came together Saturday at Ingalls Park in Joliet to memorialize Mammosser and support local charities for the third Mammopalooza.

Mammosser’s father, Jim, said the fundraiser supports the community the way the community supported his son, and also helps family and friends cope with their loss.

“It’s somewhat a healing process for us. At least you’re keeping Matt’s legacy and memory alive by doing what he wanted to do by helping people,” Jim Mammosser said.

The event was being presented by the Mammosser family’s nonprofit corporation Mammo Strong, Inc. Mammosser’s nickname was “Mammo.” The organization applied for nonprofit status this year, Jim said. The goal of the nonprofit is to help youths succeed.

St. Mary’s Nativity Church in Joliet plans to memorialize Mammosser with the construction of a baseball field in his memory, he said. They are still trying to raise funds for the project.

In Mammosser’s own life, he was always willing to help people around him, Jim said.

Salata’s sister Hayley, who also knew Mammosser when she attended JCA, said he was always smiling, always happy and always willing to give her advice, even with athletics.

“He would always encourage me to get better and help ‘get big,’ as he would say,” she said.

Salata said he remembers him having a great attitude in life, especially when it came to his deafness. Mammosser had to wear a cochlear implant to hear.

“He wouldn’t try to take [his deafness] too seriously just because it’s a lot more for him to handle and he was not really worried about it,” Salata said.

He remembers one amusing incident with Mammosser during the New Year’s holiday before 2012. They were both at a hotel swimming in the pool and playing with a football when Mammosser – who was not wearing his cochlear implant – launched the football and nailed a fire alarm nearby.

The fire alarm went off.

“It almost made me deaf but Matt couldn’t hear it. He was too busy laughing,” Salata said.

Mammopalooza not only memorializes Mammosser but it lets his family, friends and supporters remember the times they spent with him, Salata said. The event also supports charities, hospitals and cancer research organizations that supported Mammosser during his life.

Salata said people can look at Mammosser as an example of someone who managed to do a lot despite living a short life.

“This kid is young and did so much throughout his life,” Salata said about the message Mammopalooza is meant to send. “Look at the support he generated and the community he brought together when he was around.”

Summer adventure through the South VIEWS Kris Stadalsky My son Pete Stadalsky and friend Nolan McClelland, who now lives in Aurora, are spending their summer paddling 1,000 miles in 70 days, through the South, to raise $10,000 for the American Diabetes Association. As of last Wednesday, they were just shy of $9,000.

Fellow Shaw Media correspondent Jeanne Millsap wrote about their quest just before they shoved off from the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina near the end of June.

Now the young men are more than half way to the Gulf of Mexico, via the Tennessee River, Tombigbee Waterway and various other lakes; portaging over dams and roadways, lugging their canoe and gear.

Pete blogs about their days living on the river, getting chewed up by chiggers, meeting up with unbelievably huge insects and, most recently, seeing water moccasins and alligators.

They’ve both come down with stomach ailments, even though they filter all their water. They’ve encountered a nasty mold problem in their gear and clothing from the high humidity, rain and high temperatures. They had to throw out sleeping bags and gear and start new so they didn’t get mold sickness.

But the trip has been unexpectedly amazing. They have met so many wonderful, kind and fun people along the way. I wish I could thank each and every one personally as a parent for all the support and kindness they have shown these two young men.

“After a few wrenching days, everything we owned was wet, intense storms, a plethora of chiggers, ticks, heat exhaustion and no clean clothes – things were getting tough,” Pete wrote.

“Just when you think no one is there, someone steps in.

Everything we need is always taken care of, we just have to trust that power will be there for us. And it always shows up. Today was a great example of that.”

Now, more than 500 miles later and currently in Mississippi, the kindness and support has continued.

Childhood center to open in early spring

By FELIX SARVER JOLIET – The transformation of a former Joliet elementary school into an early childhood center is halfway complete.

An executive with One Hope United gave an update on the project last week at a meeting of the Joliet City Council Land Use and Legislative Committee.

The organization will convert the closed Parks Elementary School at 500 Parks Ave. into an early childhood center. One Hope United is a child services group that began in 1895 as the Chicago Baptist Orphanage.

Mark McHugh, chief operating officer for One Hope United, said construction is 50 percent complete and he expects the center to open in February or March.

The cost of renovation is about $5.9 million but One Hope United received a $3.1 million state grant for the project. The grant comes from a $45 million government funding package from the state to improve early childhood education in Illinois.

“It was a unique opportunity because the state was giving out capital grants specifically to construct early childhood centers and that just doesn’t come around every day,” McHugh said.

One Hope United is raising the rest of the funds through fundraising, tax credits and long-term borrowing, he said.

The building will be the first early childhood center in Joliet

and the 13th early childhood location in the group’s northeastern Illinois region, which includes Waukegan, Aurora, Elgin and Chicago.

The center will serve about 200 students from birth to age 12, McHugh said. Plans for the center include classrooms for students from birth to age 3, foster care and counseling offices and a small gym for the children.

He said the center will employ 40 people in the early childhood program and roughly 10 for counseling and foster care programs.

Rudy Mahalik street Committee members also heard Thursday a proposal to name an area of Scott Street, running from Jefferson Street to the south and Cass Street to the north, after Rudy Mahalik.

He is a prominent Joliet business leader who bought and renovated the historic U.S. Post Office building at 150 Scott St. His son, Tom Mahalik, former vice president of marketing for the City Center Partnership, said at the meeting Mahalik has always been a positive influence on the community. His father started a business association on the East Side to get business owners to band together and upgrade the area, he said.

“It would be a real honor for him as recognition for the things that he did for the community,” Tom Mahalik said.

The proposal is scheduled to be presented at the next city council meeting.

The Lockport church, 312 E. 11th St., wants to construct an addition to the accessory building east of the church, among other changes. However, the church is making adjustments to the site plans following recommendations

A school physical differs from a sports physical in that, apart from family health history, “We also look at the social history and any emotional issues, and we always emphasize a healthy lifestyle,” Kunchala said, which means healthy eating habits and at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day.

“We give guidance regarding health, and counseling regarding alcohol, drugs and the importance of maintaining good weight,” Kunchala said. “That’s why I say parents shouldn’t wait to come in for a sports physical, but come in for yearly exams.

That way they know their kids are growing appropriately for their age.”

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com ELWOOD – Nancy Steinberg of Elwood was baking with her 6-year-old grandson, Alex Null of Channahon, trying to reproduce the taste and consistency of her mother’s frosting – and failing.

“He said, ‘It’s not as good as great-grandma’s, but it’s OK,’ ” Nancy said.

Bessie Frederick of Elwood also was known for her potato salad and mashed potatoes, Nancy said. Even Alex’s 5-year-old brother Eric – who shied away from mashed potatoes – liked Bessie’s. Simple foods, yes, Nancy said, but every dish always received rave reviews.

“She never went by an exact recipe,” Nancy said. “It was always throw in a little of this and that.”

Nancy surmises her mother acquired her skills from growing up on an Elwood farm, still in existence today, near Hoff and Old Chicago roads – the second-oldest of seven children (twin brothers died in infancy), Nancy said.

She certainly could tell the stories, such as how all five siblings rode a single pony to school although they had to walk home because the pony

would not wait, and a mishap on the front porch that involved mud pies and a horse, Nancy said.

“They must have put corn or carrots in the mud pies to make the horse come up,” Nancy said. “When the horse turned around, he put his butt through the window. They all took off when that happened.”

Bessie lavishly decorated her house for every major and minor holiday, Nancy said, acquiring decorations inexpensively from thrift shops. She also quilted large bedspreads and lap quilts featuring family photos; she scrapbooked family memories.

Family and hard work defined Bessie, who worked at the Joliet Arsenal during World War II and in the 1960s.

That energy remained even in Bessie’s later years, Nancy said.

“After my dad retired, they got up early and started

working around the home,” Nancy said. “They always had a project going.”

The garden at Bessie’s former Joliet home in the Ingalls Park area looked like a park, Nancy said. She recalled a certain Dusty Miller Bessie threw away behind the fence, landing near a pussy willow tree. It was still lying there the next spring, blooming, so Bessie replanted it, Nancy said.

“She was so good with plants, she couldn’t even throw them away,” Nancy said.

Each fall, Bessie, on hands and knees, would remove her geraniums from their containers, knock off the dirt and then place them in a cool, dark basement room. Come spring, geraniums and containers went back in the ground – trimmed back – and they would bloom.

“She just did that two days before she died,” Nancy said, “and they’re looking beautiful.”

After Louis, Bessie’s husband of nearly 70 years, died in 2013, Bessie began to have some health difficulties, although she still lived in her home, Nancy said. Up until then, Bessie had kept pace with her great-grandsons Alex and Eric.

She chased them around the house; and read, played board games and pushed Hot Wheels on the floor with them.

She even joined them in a friendly game of baseball, with Bessie batting and running bases with the boys. The last game was two years before Bessie’s death May 6 at the age of 90.

“We played in her backyard,” Nancy said. “She was pitcher.”

OBITUARIES DOROTHY E. ANDERSON Dorothy E. Anderson (nee Fort), age 94, of Lockport, passed away on Thursday, August 7th, 2014.

Beloved wife of the late Bengt I. Anderson; loving mother of Marilynn (Charles) Sandeen, Carolynn (late Daniel) Stobbe, Rosilynn (Frank) Popek, and Franklynn (Kimberly) Anderson; cherished grandmother of 12 and great-grandmother of 24; dear sister of Eleanor (Harold) DuBien; and sister-in-law of Marge Anderson; also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

JAMES DAVIS Born: Aug. 25, 1917; in Carbondale, IL Died: Aug. 10, 2014; in Hines, IL James “J.R.” Davis, age 96, of Wilmington, passed away August 10, 2014, at Hines VA Medical Center.

Born August 25, 1917, in Carbondale, IL, James Raymond was a son of the late John Raymond and Mella Catherine (Kirk) Davis.

He graduated from high school in Carlisle and went on to honorably serve in the US Navy during WWII. He served in the Pacific Theater of operations; was involved in the Battle of Saipan, and was a

Purple Heart recipient. Following his honorable discharge from service, James went on to gain to his Masters Degree in Education.

Mr. Davis served as Principal in Chrisman, IL prior to becoming Superintendent of schools in Gilman and later for the Wilmington School District. Following his career in education, he sold real estate for the Bale Agency in Wilmington until his retirement.

James was a lifetime member of the Wilmington VFW, belonged to the Wilmington American Legion and the A.F. & A.M. He was also a former member of the Wilmington Rotary and the Wilmington Moose Lodge. J.R. loved to read and watch the History Channel. His kids and grandchildren were very important to him, and he enjoyed attending and keeping up with all of their activities.

Survivors include his children: Kirk Davis of Limestone Twp, Brent (Sandy) Davis of Wilmington, Chanson (the late Michael) Ponton of Bourbonnais, Rory (Renee) Davis of Monee and Desiree (Thomas) McCormick of Wilmington; eleven grandchildren: Brent, Jr., Davita, Trent and Kaylie Davis, James, Cory and Taylor Ponton, Jacob, Jason, Joel and Joe Davis; three great grandchildren: Alyssa and Aleyna Findlay and Cason Davis and one great-great-grandson Kaiden Burley; two sisters: Eugena Marshall of Odin, Illinois and Quinnie Hubbell of Louisiana; one brother-in-law Fred Rushing of Odin and one sisterin-law Barbara Davis of Virginia, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

James was preceded by his parents; loving wife of 50 years Barbara; son-in-law Michael Ponton; five sisters and one brother.

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 12th from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Baskerville Funeral Home, 700 E. Kahler Rd. in Wilmington. Funeral services will follow Wednesday, August 13th at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will be in Abraham Lincoln Cemetery, Elwood.

MARY ANN DILLON Mary Ann Dillon (nee Wrona), age 89, of Joliet, was born December 21, 1924, in Joliet, IL the second daughter of Paul and Mary Ann (nee Michon) Wrona. She graduated from St. Thaddeus School where she was the music copyist for the choir. During the Depression, her parents thought they were too poor to provide clothing and fees for high school, but after two weeks, the truant officer from Joliet Township High School came and assured them that they could help Mary Ann obtain what she needed, and she became enrolled.

Mary Ann worked her way through high school by cleaning the school. She was involved in the Girls Athletic Association, fencing, golf, and the business preparatory program. One semester, ten people were failing shorthand and the teacher asked Mary Ann to tutor them for a dime per student, one hour each day after school. They all passed.

Mary Ann was the first of her family to graduate high school. After graduating in 1942, she worked briefly for a defense contractor where she handled payroll for 96 employees. She then worked in Chicago, for Buchen Advertising; W. I. Orwig; and later, her favorite job, the law firm of Burton Y. Witzenfeld, Arnstein, Bluck, Witzenfeld and Minow in Chicago.

On May 10, 1947, Mary Ann married Daniel T. Dillon, Jr., her only true love, who had recently returned from the Pacific. Daniel T. Dillon, III was born July 15, 1948; Mary Ann Dillon was born January, 1952, full term but deceased; Rita L. “Dolly” Dillon was born November 28, 1952, three months prematurely; and Paul M. Dillon was born September 25, 1960.

Daniel, Rita and Paul survive.

In later life, Mary Ann worked at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Joliet, Union Oil, Joliet Junior College, and Argonne Laboratory, where she worked in legal, environmental sciences and a unique library position. The most interesting for her was working for the Acting Chairman of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, where the chairmanship rotated between the five government-affiliated research facilities.

She was very proud of her sons, Dan, the attorney and eventual Judge who graduated from Notre Dame; Paul, the actor and graduate of DePaul (Austin Powers, “Fight

Club,” and “Hell Cab,” among others); and Rita, not the academic type, who worked at various legal, social work and insurance transcription jobs.

Mary Ann’s favorite hobbies were gardening, bird watching, and reading. She always told her kids, “If there’s something you believe in, stick to your guns. Don’t let anybody convince you you’re wrong.”

This was especially true regarding one child’s passionate belief in the civil rights movement.

Mom battled valiantly against two strokes and partial paralysis, the vascular dementia that tried to crush her spirit, but failed, and the two heart attacks which took her life. Mom was fiercely independent and never quit trying. She lived a complicated and interesting life, and was always true to her convictions. She loved dancing and music and had a great respect for jazz musicians, her favorite composers being the Gershwins. She and her husband went to Melody Mill and the Aragon back in the day to see all the big bands.

Grateful acknowledgment is extended to the nurses, doctors, restaurant people, pizza delivery people, grocery people, and pharmacists who helped bring joy to Mom’s final years, and to her baby sister, Christine Peterson, and Mary Ann’s son, Paul, who was her primary caregiver from May, 2013 until her death. A very special thank you goes to Carolyn Schaeffer, a rock of support, and Kevin Etheridge, an awesome purchasing agent.

In addition to her children, Mary Ann is survived by three grandsons and their families, Duffy and Faun Dillon (Attorney and Cincinnati Insurance employee) of Janesville, WI, and their two children, Connor and Finnegan; Brian and Liz Dillon (Attorneys at Law) of Minneapolis, MN, and their children, Ana and James Christopher; and Chris and Kelly Dillon (Emergency Doctor and ER Nurse) of Maple Grove, MN, and their two children, Isabella and Sullivan. She is also survived by ten siblings and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services for Mary Ann Dillon will be Wednesday, August 13, 2014, at 10:15 a.m. from the Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet to St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church for Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The ASSOCIATED PRESS MIAMI – Henry Stone, a fixture on the R&B and disco scene who was instrumental in the careers of Ray Charles, James Brown and KC & the Sunshine Band, has died. He was 93.

Stone, a co-founder of the famed TK Records, died Thursday of natural causes at a Miami-area hospital, the funeral home Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapels confirmed.

Stone opened up a record-distribution business and recording studio in South Florida in 1948 and within a few years recorded his first artist, a pianist-singer from the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind who would later become the legendary Ray Charles.

Stone’s hits were on TK Records, which he co-founded with Steve Alaimo in 1972, and similar labels he founded.

They included: “Get Down Tonight,” “That’s the Way (I Like It)”, “Shake, Shake, Shake (Shake Your Booty),” “I’m Your Boogie Man” for KC & the Sunshine Band and “Ring My Bell” for Anita Ward, The Miami Herald reported.

Stone released Otis Williams and the Charms’ No. 1 R&B hit, “Heart of Stone,” in 1954. He was also instrumental in signing James Brown and the Famous Flames, earning the hit, “Please, Please, Please,” which topped the R&B in 1956.

Stone’s love for music started as a teen when he played trumpet while growing up in an orphanage in Pleasantville, New York. During World War II, he served in the Army and played trumpet in a racially integrated band and developed an appreciation of what were called “race records.” Three decades later, the biggest payoff of his career came with the racially-integrated KC & the Sunshine Band.

Illinois governor signs into law ‘Sign and Drive’

CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn has signed legislation ending the practice of posting a driver’s license as security after certain traffic citations, meaning drivers now may sign a citation as their guarantee they will appear in court or pay a fine.

Quinn’s office made the announcement involving the socalled “Sign and Drive” legislation late Saturday evening. The Chicago Democrat said the measure, which takes immediate effect, will help Illinois motorists hold onto a vital piece of identification and also allow law enforcement officials to do their jobs.

The Secretary of State’s Office still may suspend the driving privileges of any motorist who does not comply with the citation.

“No longer will motorists be inconvenienced by having to give up their driver’s license for nothing more than a moving violation,” said state Sen. Michael Noland of Elgin, who sponsored the measure with state Rep. John D’Amico, a fellow Democrat from Chicago.

D’Amico called the legislation “a piece of common-sense legislation aimed at cutting down on the instances of identification misuse or misplacement.”

Toxic algae unlikely in Illinois drinking water

SPRINGFIELD – The toxin-producing algae that tainted drinking water around Toledo, Ohio, last week isn’t likely to pose a similar problem in Illinois, but state officials are still watching out for it.

As part of the program, anyone can complete and submit a bloom report form for review by the agency’s staff.

Biggs said blue-green algae, the source of the problem in Lake Erie, hasn’t been a big concern in Lake Michigan in recent years.

That’s mostly because Lake Erie is shallower and warmer than Lake Michigan, making it more prone to algae.

Quincy house fire kills man, 1-year-old son

QUINCY – Authorities in western Illinois’ Quincy say a weekend fire has killed a father and his toddler son.

Bassett and 1-year-old Ladavion Bassett died after the fire Saturday in the family’s rental home.

Another one of Lewis Bassett’s sons, 3-year-old Lewis Bassett Jr., was critically injured and was taken to an unspecified St. Louis-area hospital. His medical status wasn’t immediately clear Sunday.

Authorities are trying to determine what sparked the blaze.

The home’s owner, Randy White, told the newspaper he had evicted the family from the house days earlier but was letting the elder Bassett remain at the home temporarily to clean it up.

Lake Michigan search for missing boater suspended

CHICAGO – The Coast Guard said it has suspended its Lake

Michigan search near Chicago for a man they say went missing after falling overboard from a disabled sailboat.

The Coast Guard said 54-yearold Daniel Brown disappeared after falling from the vessel named “Three’s Company” after a railing broke about 7:30 p.m. Saturday.

Brown’s hometown was not immediately available.

The Coast Guard says five other people aboard the boat saw Brown resurface once but lost sight of him while trying to throw him a floatation device.

Brown was not wearing a life jacket.

The sailboat was towed into a harbor.

Searchers using boats and a helicopter failed to locate the man Saturday night, and the search continued Sunday before being suspended.

Chicago police probe shooting near parade

CHICAGO – Chicago police are investigating a shooting that wounded two teenagers standing near a parade in which Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn and his Republican challenger marched.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the victims, ages 18 and 17, sustained wounds not considered life-threatening during a reported argument near Saturday’s yearly Bud Billiken parade.

The Bud Billiken is the nation’s oldest African-American parade and has been a tradition on the city’s South Side since 1929. It was founded by Robert S. Abbott, founder of the Chicago Defender newspaper.

The parade continued despite the shooting.

NATION & WORLD BRIEFS Killing of unarmed black man draws criticism FERGUSON, Mo. – An 18-yearold black man shot multiple times by a suburban St. Louis police officer was unarmed when he died, police said Sunday, as hundreds of local residents protested and a civil rights leader expressed outrage at the killing.

St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar said the shooting occurred after an officer encountered two people – one of whom was Brown – on the street near an apartment complex Saturday afternoon in Ferguson, a predominantly black suburb a few miles north of downtown St. Louis.

Belmar said one of the men pushed the officer back into his squad car and a struggle began.

Belmar said at least one shot was fired from the officer’s gun inside the police car. Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson said authorities were still sorting out what happened inside the police car. It was not clear if Brown was the man who struggled with the officer. The struggle spilled out into the street, where Brown was shot multiple times. Belmar said the exact number of shots wasn’t known, but “it was more than just a couple.”

Israel, Hamas accept cease-fire proposal CAIRO – Israel and the Hamas militant group accepted an Egyptian cease-fire proposal Sunday, clearing the way for the resumption of talks on a long-term truce to end a month of heavy fighting in the Gaza Strip that has taken

nearly 2,000 lives.

The announcement marked the second time in less than a week that the bitter enemies had agreed to Egyptian mediation. A similar three-day truce last week collapsed in renewed violence over the weekend.

The truce took effect at midnight, preceded by heavy rocket fire toward Israel. In Cairo, the Egyptian Foreign Ministry said the cease-fire would allow humanitarian aid into battered Gaza neighborhoods and the reopening of indirect talks on a more lasting and comprehensive deal.

Hamas is seeking an end to the Israeli-Egyptian blockade against Gaza, while Israel wants Hamas to dismantle its formidable arsenal of rockets and other weapons.

L.A. woman punched by patrolman speaks LOS ANGELES – Marlene Pinnock said she thought she was going to die as a California Highway Patrol officer straddled her, repeatedly punching her head on the side of a Los Angeles freeway.

During an interview with The Associated Press on Sunday – her first public comments since the July 1 beating was caught on video by a passing driver – Pinnock spoke haltingly or in a whisper, occasionally putting her hands to her temples and grimacing.

Pinnock, 51, was released from the hospital last week after several weeks of treatment for head injuries and now slurs her speech, Harper said.

California debates ‘yes means yes’ sex assault law

By JULIE WATSON The Associated Press SAN DIEGO – College students have heard a similar refrain for years in campaigns to stop sexual assault: No means no.

Now, as universities around the country that are facing pressure over the handling of rape allegations adopt policies to define consensual sex, California is poised to take it a step further. Lawmakers are considering what would be the first-in-the-nation measure requiring all colleges that receive public funds to set a standard for when “yes means yes.”

Defining consensual sex is a growing trend by universities in an effort to do more to protect victims.

From the University of California system to Yale, schools have been adopting standards to distinguish when consent was given for

a sexual activity and when it was not.

Legislation passed by California’s state Senate in May and coming before the Assembly this month would require all schools that receive public funds for student financial assistance to set a so-called “affirmative consent standard” that could be used in investigating and adjudicating sexual assault allegations. That would be defined as “an affirmative, unambiguous and conscious decision” by each party to engage in sexual activity.

Silence or lack of resistance does not constitute consent. The legislation says it’s also not consent if the person is drunk, drugged, unconscious or asleep.

Lawmakers say consent can be nonverbal, and universities with similar policies have outlined examples as maybe a nod of the head or moving in closer to the person.

Several state legislatures, including Maryland, Texas and Connecticut, introduced bills in the past year to push colleges to do more after a White House task force reported that 1 in 5 female college students is a victim of sexual assault. The U.S. Education Department also took the unprecedented step of releasing the names of schools facing federal investigation for the way they handle sexual abuse allegations.

But no state legislation has gone as far as California’s bill in requiring a consent standard.

Critics say the state is overstepping its bounds.

The Los Angeles Times in an editorial after the bill passed the state Senate 27-4 wrote that it raises questions as to whether it is “reasonable” or “enforceable.”

The legislation is based on the White House task force’s recommendations.

YACOUB and VIVIAN SALAMA The Associated Press BAGHDAD – Iraq’s embattled Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, in a surprise speech late Sunday, resisted calls for his resignation and accused the country’s new president of violating the constitution, plunging the government into a political crisis at a time it is battling advances by Islamic State militants.

Al-Maliki is seeking a thirdterm as prime minister, but the latest crisis has prompted even his closest allies to call for his resignation.

A parliament session scheduled for Monday to discuss the election and who might lead the next Iraqi government was postponed until Aug. 19.

On Sunday night, in a nationally televised speech, al-Maliki declared he will file a legal complaint against the new president, Fouad Massoum, for committing “a clear constitutional violation.”

Al-Maliki, whose Shiite-dominated bloc won the most seats in April elections, accused Massoum of neglecting to name a prime minister from the country’s largest parliamentary faction by Sunday’s deadline. He said the president has violated the constitution “for the sake of political goals.”

Al-Maliki, speaking on Iraqi TV for the first time since U.S. forces launched airstrikes and humanitarian airdrops in Iraq last week, said the security situation will only worsen as a result of Massoum’s actions.

“This attitude represents a coup on the constitution and the political process in a country that is governed by a democratic and federal system,” al-Maliki said. “The deliberate violation of the constitution by the president will have grave consequences on the unity, the sovereignty, and the independence of Iraq and the entry of the political process into a dark tunnel.”

Motorsports reeling after track fatality

By JOHN WAWROW and DAN GELSTON The Associated Press CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – The collision was as common as any in racing. Kevin Ward Jr.’s car spun twice like a top, wheels hugging the wall, before it plopped backward on the dimly lit dirt track.

In a sport steeped with bravado, what happened next was another familiar, but treacherous, move: Wearing a black firesuit and black helmet, the 20-year-old Ward unbuckled himself, climbed out of the winged car into the night and defiantly walked onto the track at Canandaigua Motorsports Park.

He gestured, making his disgust evident with the driver who triggered the wreck with a bump: three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart.

Ward, a relative unknown compared to NASCAR’s noted swashbuckler, was nearly hit by another passing car as he pointed with his right arm in Stewart’s direction. As he confronted Stewart in his passing car, disaster struck.

Ward was standing to the right of Stewart’s familiar No. 14 car, which seemed to fishtail from the rear and hit him. According to video and witness accounts, Ward’s body was sucked underneath the car and hurtled through

Ward was killed. Stewart, considered one of the most proficient drivers in racing, dropped out of Sunday’s NASCAR race at Watkins Glen, hours after Saturday’s crash.

And the sport was left reeling from a tragedy that could have ripple effects from the biggest stock car series down to weeknight dirt track racing.

“There aren’t words to describe the sadness I feel about the accident that took the life of Kevin Ward Jr.,” Stewart said in a statement.

Authorities questioned the 43-year-old Stewart once on Saturday night and went to Watkins Glen to talk to him again Sunday. They de-

scribed him as “visibly shaken” after the crash and said he was cooperative.

On Sunday, Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said that investigators also don’t have any evidence at this point in the investigation to support criminal intent. But he also said that criminal charges have not been ruled out.

The crash raised several questions: Will Ward’s death cause drivers to think twice about on-track confrontations? Did Stewart try to send his own message by buzzing Ward, the young driver, only to have his risky move turn fatal? Or did Ward simply take his life into his own hands by stepping into traffic in a black firesuit on a dark

track?

The only one who may have that answer is Stewart.

David S. Weinsten, a former state and federal prosecutor in Miami who is now in private practice, said it would be difficult to prove criminal intent.

“I think even with the video, it’s going to be tough to prove that this was more than just an accident and that it was even culpable negligence, which he should’ve known or should’ve believed that by getting close to this guy, that it was going to cause the accident,” he said.

The sheriff renewed a plea for spectators to turn over photos and videos of the crash. Investigators were reconstructing the accident and looking into everything from the dim lighting on a portion of the track to how muddy it was, as well as if Ward’s dark firesuit played a role in his death, given the conditions.

Driver Cory Sparks, a friend of Ward’s, was a few cars back when Ward was killed.

“The timing was unsafe,” he said of Ward’s decision to get out of his car to confront Stewart. “When your adrenaline is going, and you’re taken out of a race, your emotions flare.”

NATO is not prepared for Russian threat NATO’s promise of collective security rests on the notion that aggression against one member of the Atlantic alliance triggers a response from all.

Yet Russia’s swift, stealthy operation to annex Crimea and destabilize eastern Ukraine has cast doubt on the alliance’s capacity to fulfill that promise. What can NATO realistically do if Vladimir Putin sets his sights on the Baltic states?

The latest warning comes in a new report by the Defense Committee of the U.K. House of Commons.

The report surveys NATO’s widening conventional capability gap with Russia, highlights the Kremlin’s aggressive nuclear posture and points to the doctrinal limitations that could hamstring a response to the next round of aggression.

Its stark conclusion: “NATO is currently not well-prepared for a Russian threat against a NATO Member State.”

Case in point: The British Army now fields a grand total of 156 main battle tanks, amounting to a single regiment. Russia has more than 2,800 active main battle tanks, according to a 2013 study by the International Institute for Strategic Studies. The committee notes that the Kremlin has unveiled an ambitious plan to expand and modernize Russia’s conventional forces, with the aim to increase the proportion of conventional assets classed as “modern” to 70 percent by 2020, up from 10 percent in 2012.

Then there is Russia’s bold nuclear-force posture.

“Russia sees its strategic nuclear forces as a key deterrent to potential Western intervention or belated response to Russian aggression,” the committee notes. “Russia dedicates a third of its Defense budget to them.”

Moscow has at least twice since 2009 simulated nuclear strikes, including one targeting Warsaw. By contrast, the Obama Administration earlier this year announced plans for sharp, and unilateral, cuts to the U.S. strategic force well ahead of the 2018 deadline set by the New Start treaty.

The committee’s most important findings relate to outdated doctrines that could prevent the alliance from keeping pace with Moscow’s sophisticated, evolving strategy.

A linchpin of Russian strategy is what the committee calls “ambiguous warfare.” As one Russian defense theorist puts it, ambiguous warfare involves using

The trouble that ambiguous warfare poses to NATO is that the alliance’s collective-defense obligations, and the strategic doctrines pinned to them, call for responding to “armed” assaults.

But Russian aggression against, say, Lithuania may not look like an outright assault. The Kremlin is more

likely to use Russian-language media to agitate the country’s ethnic-Russian population while debilitating basic state functions through cyberattacks and the deployment of irregular commandos.

The Crimean operation provided a blueprint for such attacks, and the Atlantic alliance would be foolish not to update its doctrines to meet the new Russian threat when the next NATO summit convenes in Cardiff in September.

But no amount of doctrinal evolution will matter if NATO members continue to treat national defense as someone else’s burden.

Lincoln-Way coach Hud Venerable excited about Knights’ potential

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Despite winning 214 games and a state title – and earning induction into his sport’s hall of fame – the start of the football season still is exciting to Hud Venerable.

After going through the same routine for the past 33 years as a coach, including 28 while leading his own program, the Lincoln-Way Central coach and athletic director is ready for another campaign to get underway.

And that starts today for the Knights as well as all of the other programs in Illinois, when practices officially can begin.

Teams have three weeks to put everything together before they play their first games on the weekend of Aug. 29-30.

While the enthusiasm level is high at most schools throughout the area, it’s especially so at the original Lincoln-Way campus, where the

Red and Black will be looking to make their marks again in the sport.

After recording 15 straight playoff appearances from 1995 to 2009, with the highlight being coach Rob Glielmi’s 1997 unbeaten Class 6A champions, the Knights are hoping to end a four-year postseason drought.

After a 4-5 campaign involving several close calls a year ago, Venerable hopes his second Knights team not only makes the playoffs but also can win some games in the postseason, something that Central last accomplished in 2005.

“I get so fired up every year when we reach August,” said Venerable, who also has been a head coach at Jacksonville, Monticello, Rich South and Normal Community, where he won a 6A state championship in 2006. “There’s something about the start of the fall practice season. No one’s played a game, and there’s the challenge of trying to build a team.”

If you think that the Knights will be pleased just to get back into the playoffs after missing out the past few years, you’d better think again.

“My expectation for this program is to contend for championships, starting with the SouthWest Suburban Red Conference,” Venerable said.

“We won’t be satisfied to win five games and just make it into the playoffs. The kids just don’t want to get to there – they want to go deep into the playoffs.”

Venerable also likes that he has a group of players on defense who have enjoyed great success the past cou-

ple of seasons as part of the Knights’ wrestling program.

Two-year starter Bryan Ditchman plus Joe Brandt and Jake Ruzas figure to lead that group along the line while Brandon Dominski will be at an inside linebacker spot and Sean Kelly and Dan Hepfinger will be outside linebackers. Justin Markus, Justin Strilko and Marc Veihl are expected to play in the secondary.

On the other side of the football, Connor Campbell and Austin Strilko, Justin’s brother, are quarterbacks while Sean Studer is at running back. A deep receivers group features Joe Nealon

and Mark Bechtold, while Alex Davidson will be at center and other possible linemen include Max Ancira, Ryan Morgan, Nick Sabatini, Tyler Stoklosa and David Vice.

The veteran coach, who was inducted into the hall of fame in 2008, also is proud of the staff he has, which includes 1996 hall of famer Terry McCombs at defensive coordinator, as well as Joe Boseo at offensive coordinator, Jason DeWolf working with the linemen and special teams, and John Karales handling the strength responsibilities.

“We were very competitive last year for eight weeks, and we want to build off of that,” Venerable said. “This is a very hard-working group of kids, and they’re led by a good group of seniors. I’ve seen them really step up their performances in workouts, at camp and 7-on-7s. Our attitude is one of our strengths, and I think this is a balanced team in all areas.”

Route 66 Classic scheduled Saturday at drag strip THE HERALD-NEWS JOLIET – The Hollywood Casino Joliet Route 66 Classic returns Saturday to Route 66 Raceway to pay homage to early drag racing and the hotrod culture.

Nostalgia drag racing, a DJ spinning vintage tunes and a special Kids Club area all will be part of the activities.

quarter-mile blast down memory lane.

Fans in attendance also will be able to witness gassers, slingshot dragsters and a wheel-stander, all of which lead up to the Jet Dragster grand finale.

Gates for the Hollywood Casino Joliet Route 66 Classic will open at 9 a.m., with on-track activity beginning at 11 a.m.

Carter sharp; rainfall stops game in sixth

JOLIET – The Joliet Slammers won a rain-shortened six-inning game over Southern Illinois, 8-3, Sunday afternoon before 1,443 at Silver Cross Field.

Joliet’s Ethan Carter (3-5) pitched all six innings, giving up one earned run while scattering four hits against a Miners club that fell to 45-29 in the Frontier League.

“I did a good job getting ahead early with my fastball and that set up my slider for later in the game,” Carter said.

“I didn’t throw my changeup as much as I normally do. It was mainly a fastball, slider mix today. I felt good throwing strikes.”

The Slammers (29-45) helped him by providing offense right from the start.

They took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as the Southern Illinois starter, left-hander Jack McGeary (02), struggled to find home plate.

McGeary walked leadoff hitter Chris Epps, gave up a single to Grant DeBruin, walked Matt Weaver to load the bases and then walked Adam Giacalone to force home Epps.

Josh Scheffert followed with a ground ball down the third base line that the Miners’ Steve Marino fielded. He tried to force Weaver at third, but Weaver’s head-first slide into the base beat him, allowing DeBruin to score. Scheffert picked up an RBI on the play.

Joliet added four more runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 6-0 lead.

After DeBruin reached on an infield single, Russell Moldenhauer homered to right, his eighth.

“Left-handers pitch me pretty tough in this league, so doing it (hitting a home run off a lefty) meant a lot more,” Moldenhauer said. “He tried to get ahead with a fastball. I was able to get a pretty good swing

Southern Illinois added a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to cut the lead to 6-3. Aaron Gates drove home two runs with a single to right.

The Slammers got those runs back in the bottom of the sixth inning when DeBruin hit a towering two-run home run over the center field fence, his ninth, to make it 8-3. After Moldenhauer walked, the umpires called for the tarp, and the game eventually was called.

“Overall, it was an outstanding job (by Carter),” Joliet manager Jeff Isom said.

“On the offensive side, we got to their starter early and gave our guy a little bit of a cushion there, and we haven’t been doing that lately.”

DeBruin, the league hits leader, finished 3 for 4 with three runs scored and two RBIs. He raised his average to .359.

In an off-field incident Saturday night, a Slammers team official said a female wearing the Spikes costume suffered a broken arm when she fell off the top of the dugout.

McIlroy wins PGA in thrilling, soggy show

By DOUG FERGUSON The Associated Press LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The challenge finally arrived for Rory McIlroy, and he was better than ever Sunday to win the PGA Championship.

On a back nine filled with clutch shots and as much tension as a major can provide, McIlroy emerged from a four-man race to outlast Phil Mickelson and the darkness at Valhalla to capture his second straight major.

McIlroy closed with a 3-under 68 and became only the fourth player in the last century of golf to win four majors at 25 or younger. The others were Tiger Woods, Jack Nicklaus and Bobby Jones, three of the game’s greatest players.

Boy Wonder appears on his way to belonging in that group.

“I didn’t think in my wildest dreams I’d have a summer like this,” said McIlroy, only the seventh player to win the

last two majors of the year. “I played the best golf of my life. I really gutted it out today.”

But one of the greatest shows on soggy turf came with a most peculiar ending.

Three shots behind going to the back nine, McIlroy rallied to take the lead and then hit a 9-iron from the fairway bunker to 10 feet for birdie on the 17th hole for a two-shot lead going to the par-5 18th. Because of a two-hour rain delay earlier, darkness was falling quickly and it wasn’t certain McIlroy would be able to finish.

McIlroy was allowed to hit his tee shot before Mickelson and Rickie Fowler had reached their drives. Both were only two shots behind, still in the game. McIlroy came within a yard of hitting in a hazard right of the fairway.

Then, the PGA of America allowed McIlroy to hit his second shot. Mickelson and Fowler had to stand to the side of the green.

“We weren’t expecting the approach shots.”

Fowler had a 50-foot eagle attempt to tie for the lead. He was well off the mark, and missed the short birdie putt attempt that cost him his third straight runner-up finish in a major. Mickelson was short of

the green, and his chip came within inches of dropping for an eagle that would have tied him for the lead.

Mickelson appeared upset that they had to wait to finish the hole – not standard procedure in a PGA Tour event – and he made two references in a TV interview that this is the

only championship the PGA of America runs all year.

“It didn’t affect the outcome of the championship at all, I don’t think,” Mickelson said.

“It’s not what we normally do.

It’s not a big deal either way.”

Mickelson closed with a 66 and was runner-up for the ninth time in a major.

Fowler became the first player in history to finish in the top five at all four majors without winning one. He closed with a 68 and tied for third with Henrik Stenson, who fell out of a share of the lead by missing a 3-foot par putt on the 14th hole. Stenson shot a 66.

McIlroy hit his second shot into a bunker, and he had to two-putt from 35 feet for the win. He lagged the first one to tap-in range, and the major was his. McIlroy repeatedly pumped his fist before letting out a scream above the gallery that had been treated to one of the best shows ever in a major.

Allmendinger gets his first Sprint Cup victory

By JOHN KEKIS The Associated Press WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. – AJ Allmendinger’s journey is almost complete.

With a new contract, sponsor extensions and a solid one-car team at JTG Daugherty Racing, Allmendinger became a winner in Sprint Cup for the first time on a somber Sunday, outdueling Marcos Ambrose in the final two laps at Watkins Glen International.

“I dreamed about this moment, and I’m not going to forget it,” said Allmendinger, making his 213th Cup start. “It’s just a dream come true.”

The day began on a solemn note when three-time Cup champion Tony Stewart pulled out of the race 12 hours after he struck and killed 20-year-old sprint car driver Kevin Ward Jr. in a race after Ward climbed from his car on a small dirt track in nearby Canandaigua.

Allmendinger offered his condolences to the Ward family after he won, saying, “We’re a community here; we’re thinking about you.”

“It’s a tough time for everybody,” Allmendinger said. “This NASCAR community, as a whole, we’re a family.

When anything like that happens, it’s something that you don’t get time to erase and forget about. Our thoughts and prayers go to the Ward family and what happened.

“And it also goes to Tony. It’s not like he’s sitting there and forgetting about it.”

In a statement released during the race by a spokesman, Stewart said: “There aren’t words to describe the sadness I feel about the accident that took the life of Kevin Ward Jr. It’s a very emotional time for all involved, and it is the reason I’ve decided not to participate in today’s race at Watkins Glen. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and everyone affected by this tragedy.”

Regan Smith drove Stewart’s car and finished 37th after having to start from the back of the 43-car field and getting caught in a late accident.

It was the second straight time Stewart missed the race at The Glen, where he has a NASCAR-record five

years ago in the hours before the July race at Daytona International Speedway. NASCAR officials had just kicked him out of the track, suspending Allmendinger indefinitely for failing a random drug test.

The failed drug test sidelined him for more than three months and cost him his job with Penske Racing. It also spurred much soul searching; and after a handful of one-off Cup rides he eventually landed a full-time Cup ride last August with JTG Daugherty Racing.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Anthony Rizzo was responsible for two of Chicago’s 17 strikeouts Sunday. He also had the biggest hit of the game for the Cubs.

Rizzo hit a game-ending RBI single in the 12th inning, and the Cubs beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 to avoid a three-game sweep.

The last-place Cubs struck out 44 times in the weekend series, setting a team record for three consecutive games; but Rizzo and touted rookie Javier Baez had two hits apiece to key a 13-hit attack in the finale. Carlos Villanueva (5-6) pitched a scoreless inning to earn the victory.

“We ran into three good

pitchers, and their bullpen is very good, too,” Rizzo said.

“Obviously, we don’t see them very often, so that makes it even tougher. Strikeouts are part of the game now. They happen.”

Baez struck out in the 12th but reached on a wild pitch that moved Ryan Sweeney to third.

Baez moved to second on another wild pitch by Cesar Ramos (2-4) before Rizzo lined a single over a five-man infield and into right-center field.

“It didn’t bother me,” Rizzo said of the crowded infield. “I’m not a ground-ball hitter.”

The Rays lost for only the fifth time in their last 23 road games. They trail Kansas City by 6½ games in the race for the second AL wild card.

Danks hammered by Jackson for three hits

By CURTIS CRABTREE The Associated Press SEATTLE – Even though they no longer play in the same division, White Sox starter John Danks is still being haunted by Austin Jackson.

The former Detroit Tigers outfielder went 3 for 4 with a career-high four RBIs against Danks as the Seattle Mariners beat the White Sox 4-2 on Sunday.

Jackson, acquired by Seattle in a trade before the deadline, has been a constant thorn in Danks’ side. Jackson entered the game as a career .400 hitter against Danks and continued to hammer the Sox starter.

“I can’t escape him,” Danks said. “I’ve thrown everything I know how to. I thought about taking my glove off and firing

one in there right-handed just to give him another look.”

Logan Morrison began a two-out rally for the Mariners in the second inning off Danks (9-8) with a hard line-drive single off the wall in right field.

Infield singles by Chris Taylor and Jesus Sucre loaded the bases for Jackson.

Jackson doubled down the left field line to give the Mariners a 3-0 lead.

“I thought Johnny pitched well enough to win a game,” manager Robin Ventura said.

“It’s just that we didn’t get anything going (offensively).”

Jackson raised his career average to .429 (21 for 49) against Danks. “He’s hit some good pitches off of me and definitely made me answer to some mistakes I made,” Danks said.

Partying for pups Rescue organization for Cavalier dogs hosts fundraising luau

By DENISE M. BARAN-UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Tina Schmidt learned of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel luau in Joliet at the last minute, but she and her rescue Cavalier, Shelby, 8, still drove all the way from Dixon to attend.

“It’s obviously for a good cause, and I love the Cavaliers,” Schmidt said.

“They’re very sweet and affectionate, and get along with everyone – humans and dogs.”

The recent event, hosted by Karla McKanna – a volunteer with the Greater Chicago Cavalier Rescue – was a fundraiser for the rescue. Last summer, McKanna hosted another GCCR benefit party, with a “Downton Abbey” theme.

Brestel, as festive as Danny Boy in her yellow shirt and lei, said she generally organizes two events a month.

“We just had an influx of dogs into the rescue – about 30 to 40 – and most of them have medical issues,” Brestel said.

“We’re trying to boost the budget as much as possible.”

Lounging around McKanna’s backyard and enjoying her pool were 61 humans, 67 Cavaliers and one Havanese, McKanna said.

Most of the guests – human and canine – had dressed in clothes to match the day.

Even the food was themed – pulled chicken served on Hawaiian rolls, meatballs in pineapple sauce, Hawaiian salad and fresh fruit. Dog treats came in assorted flavors:

Love-Paramo attended with her brown and white Cavalier, Scout, and her black and white Cavalier, Oakley, a therapy dog for her 10-year-old son, Michael.

“For every print, I donated $5 back to the rescue,” Johnson said. “It’s not about me.”

GCCR President Helen Cordell of Yorkville attributed the organization’s success to volunteers, especially with fostering and fundraising.

Working with veterinarians willing to provide substantial discounts – for spays and neuters, vaccinations and unexpected medical problems – also is a blessing.

Although the event raised $1,574, an equally nice benefit of GCCR parties is that volunteers, adoptive and foster parents – with dogs in tow – all get to socialize, swap stories and reminisce, McKanna said.

“Everyone gets along,” McKanna said. “The dogs never even bark.”

When you are in a trump contract, you start by counting losers. But on some deals (I estimate around 20 percent), you do better to count winners. So, in an ideal world, you count both before playing from the dummy at trick one.

South is in five clubs. What should he do after West leads the spade king?

North’s double was negative, promising four hearts. South’s two-spade cue-bid was an artificial game-force. Then probably either South should have bid three no-trump over three clubs, or North should have cue-bid three spades over three diamonds to ask his partner to bid three no-trump with a spade stopper.

That is 10 tricks in. And when South leads dummy’s last heart, he must collect one more trump trick with his nine via a coup en passant. If East ruffs low, South overruffs; if East ruffs with his queen, South discards a spade loser and his club nine is then high.

ADVICE Attentive parents can prevent kids being left alone in cars Dear Abby: It disturbs me greatly that we keep reading about parents leaving their children in cars, whether it be absentmindedness, stress or downright intentional. It needs to stop.

I’m hoping car manufacturers can come up with an idea – maybe a sensor that once the doors are closed and locked, should there be motion or a sound in the vehicle, the windows would automatically open, giving a passer-by a chance to see inside and maybe save a precious life.

DEAR ABBY Jeanne Phillips brought a suggestion from another reader who is hoping to put an end to the loss of these fragile young lives. A mother in Westland, Michigan, offered this: Dear Abby: I have a suggestion for parents. Talk to your children when they are in the car with you.

I always carried on a conversation, sang or counted to my kids, even newborns, and continued through the years they were rear-facing and forward-facing. It helped them to learn their ABCs, count and even know where streets were. It also

was a running reminder that someone very special was with me. I never listened to the radio, unless it was nursery rhymes on DVD or toddler songs. It not only helped me teach my children, but it also made driving fun and safe for the tiny passengers in my car. – D.W.K. Readers: A nonprofit group called KidsAndCars suggests parents “place something they will need (when exiting the vehicle), such as a cellphone, handbag or briefcase, near the child in the back seat.

Or keep a large stuffed animal in the child’s car seat when it’s not occupied.

When the child is in the car seat, place the stuffed animal in the front passenger seat as a reminder that the child is in the back.

Relieve pms symptoms with diet, lifestyle changes Dear Dr. K: Every month I have awful PMS. Can you suggest drug-free ways to relieve my symptoms?

Dear Reader: Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is a collection of symptoms that occur just before and during menstruation.

The most common symptom is unusual mood swings. In addition, women with PMS also experience irritability, anxiety, depression, headaches, hot flashes, bloating, abdominal cramping, breast tenderness and food cravings.

Diet and lifestyle strategies can help alleviate some symptoms of PMS: • Heat. Apply heat (a heating pad, hot water bottle or a hot shower) to your stomach or back to temporarily relieve pain.

• Avoid skipping meals.

Regular meals and snacks help maintain a balanced mood and better energy level. Pair carbohydrates with protein or fat to help you feel full longer. Eat an apple with peanut butter, low-fat cheese with crackers or vegetables with hummus.

• Increase your calcium intake.

Women who get at least 1,000 milligrams of calcium a day have fewer PMS symptoms compared

Good food sources of calcium include low-fat dairy products, canned salmon, kale and bok choy.

• Watch your caffeine intake.

Caffeine may increase moodiness and anxiety.

• Get enough B vitamins. Women who get more of the B vitamins thiamine and riboflavin from their food are less likely to have PMS. Good food sources of these B vitamins include sunflower seeds, beans, oats, dairy products, dark green vegetables and eggs.

• Manage your stress. Stress can increase the number and severity of PMS symptoms. To relieve stress, exercise regularly, or try yoga.

• Acupuncture. There is limited but promising evidence that acupuncture can help relieve menstrual pain.

• Indulge in a little chocolate.

Many women crave chocolate around their periods. If you do, choose dark chocolate, which has less sugar, over milk chocolate.

Mild PMS is common. Talk to your doctor if you experience severe symptoms. These include: • Inability to carry out your usual daily activities.

• Symptoms that interfere with your relationships.

• Sudden onset of new PMS symptoms or increase in severity.

PMS is one of many conditions that some doctors ignore or dismiss, either because it is not life-threatening or because there are no diagnostic tests or objective abnormalities when the doctor performs a physical examination.

Some doctors are frustrated when a patient says she has a symptom, yet the doctor has no way of objectively verifying it.

Such an attitude is unfortunate. PMS produces very real suffering for millions of women.

There are drug-free ways that can help alleviate the symptoms.

By the spring of 1869, a large, ornate depot, shown in the then photograph, was constructed and completed north of the tracks near the southwest corner of Chicago and Kankakee Streets. The building functioned as the town’s depot until it was decommissioned in the early 1970s. Preservation efforts to save the depot began in earnest beginning in 1997, when Union Pacific offered to donate the depot and save it from demolition. The same year, a grassroots community group was formed to raise money to save the structure and potentially move it to another location. In recent years, however, the all-brick construction and limestone foundation of the old building, along with its deteriorating condition, made saving and moving the depot for preservation purposes problematic. Plans for the high-speed rail, and the reconstruction of the rail line between Joliet and Dwight ultimately sealed the fate of the historic depot and dashed any hope of saving the historic structure. Attempts to raise the needed money or the ability to negotiate a lease agreement with Union Pacific failed. In February 2012, the Wilmington depot, thought to be one of the oldest in the state, was razed by the American Demolition Corporation.
