Author will give a guide to Civil War battlegrounds Presentation is free on Sunday in Lockport

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – Michael Weeks will encourage people to walk in the footsteps of those who lived and fought during the Civil War when he comes to Lockport on Sunday.

The author is scheduled to give a presentation that is part history lesson, part storytelling and part encouragement to audience members to see the places that were once the battlefields of the Civil War. The presentation is part of the Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery’s series on Illinois women who supported those who fought in the conflict.

Weeks’ presentation, called “Finding Hallowed Ground: America’s Civil War Sites Today,” is free and will be from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Illinois State Museum Lockport Gallery, 201 W. 10th Street.

Anyone with an interest in Civil War history, travel or historical artifacts from the era are encouraged to see the presentation, said Jennifer Jaskowiak, the museum’s curator.

She said Weeks has visited the battle sites and walked in the footsteps of the soldiers who fought.

his journey by visiting several major Civil War battle sites and historic sites before becoming interested in visiting smaller ones. He said he found many of them were well-preserved by state and local groups.

He didn’t intend to visit about 450 of them but there were many sites he couldn’t leave out of the books he’s written about his trips. He’s authored the Complete Civil War Road Trip Guide, Civil War Road Trip Volume I and II. “It was kind of a passion that went crazy on me and turned into these three books,” he said.

Weeks said he hopes people come away from his presentation thinking about doing the same. He said it’s not as difficult as it seems to visit many of the historic sties. In 10 long weekends, people could see every major Civil War site in the country, he said.

Jaskowiak ventured to some Civil War sites herself, such as the Gettysburg battlefield in Pennsylvania.

“It’s such an emotional experience to be on those fields and knowing that so many men died in a very dramatic way and what it meant to American history,” she said.

MARSEILLES – A Lockport man was seriously injured Monday in a skydiving accident.

Marseilles Fire Chief Michael Garrison said fellow skydivers reported Curtis Kmiecek was “spiraling down” during the jump and appeared to be having problems with his parachute.

The jump, done by LaSalle-based Skydive Chicago, went awry at 12:50 p.m. Garri-

son said Kmiecek landed in a tree on the east side of the Fox River. The tree was in a field about a mile-and-a-half north of I-80 off Illinois 171.

“It’s about a mile from [Skydive Chicago’s] landing zone on the other side of the river,” Garrison said.

“He was not in control of the chute.”

Garrison said Kmiecek was located by Skydive Chicago personnel about a halfhour after the jump and they removed him from the tree.

“He was unconscious. Be-

cause of the potential trauma, a [helicopter] was called automatically for transport,” Garrison said.

Kmiecek was airlifted to a trauma center and was in serious condition Tuesday, according to reports.

The Herald-News archives show Kmiecek worked as an adviser for air defense systems while living in Egypt during the 1990s. Upon his return to the states, Kmiecek and his wife established Dover Investigations, a private investigations firm.

Will County paper trail goes back to the 1800s

lleonecross@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Will County’s paper trail grows with each court case, each marriage and divorce, and each home foreclosure.

And it all has to go somewhere.

The county’s Records Management Department, headquartered at a warehouse on Nicholson Street, is required by law to maintain paper originals of certain documents – some of which date back to the 1800s. While some documents must be kept forever, others can eventually be shredded, or preserved on microfilm.

The county is running out of room, Mike Thompson, director for the county’s Records Management Department, explained to a handful of county officials during a tour of the facility Tuesday.

Thompson led the group through the facility’s various archive rooms, including “The Vault,” a two-story area with shelves that snake all about in a neat marching order. Inside, boxes line the shelves, filled with documents from various county departments that no longer have the space to keep them on site.

“We are about to put in the last expansion in and then that’s the end of this vault,” Thompson explained to county officials. “If you see open space, don’t assume it’s open space because we have not received most of the departments’ records for this year.”

County Board members from the Capital Improvements Committee were briefed about the facility’s space issues, as well as the records staff’s space-saving efforts over the past couple of years.

The department doesn’t have the option of going completely paperless, he said, like people sometimes do when they opt to file tax returns or pay their bills online. The county is required by law to maintain certain documents on paper.

Thompson said he and his staff reorganized this spring, with plans to install additional shelving. Thousands of financial records have been moved in recent years to the Court Annex Building on Ottawa Street. A storage facility in Rantoul, which the county rents for an affordable $2,400 a year, is being used to store certain traffic cases filed before 1997.

But those solutions won’t be enough, he said. A number of county offices are in line to temporarily move into the recently acquired First Midwest

Bank building, 50 W. Jefferson St., as part of the county’s overall plan to consolidate offices and construct a new courthouse downtown. Other departments are moving to the former Social Security Administration building downtown.

Those relocations mean more documents will likely have to be stored at the Nicholson street facility, he said.

“They’re getting ready to move,” Thompson said. “So all these people are finding themselves in smaller and smaller spaces. We’re doing our best to take in what they don’t probably have the room for.”

The department already maintains between 10,000 and 11,000 boxes, an estimate that doesn’t include the thousands of documents held there by the

circuit clerk’s office or court reporters, Thompson said.

The warehouse also houses unwanted surplus, voting equipment and used ballots.

Thompson said he expects the department will need an additional 10,000 square feet within the next decade. Records are kept on a retention schedule, depending on the document type, and his staff takes an “aggressive approach” in destroying documents once they drop off the schedule and are no longer needed.

Nick Palmer, chief of staff for the county executive office, said the board will need to keep the facility in mind when shaping the budget and the county’s five-year capital improvements plan in the coming months.

“It may not be the sexy stuff, but we’ve got to have somewhere to store documents,” Palmer said.

Climate control improvements for the facility also is under consideration, he said.

Mariano’s will open Tuesday in Shorewood

The food store is replacing the Dominick’s that closed last fall at 950 Brook Forest Ave. The building is a prime location that is vital for the village, Mayor Rick Chapman said.

“I’m happy Mariano’s is opening soon,” Chapman said. “It’s a place where you can go in; it’s padded for convenience. It gives residents a lot more choice so they don’t have to travel very much.”

Store Director Shain Lichty said the store has been under heavy interior construction recently, and he is excited to provide a common place that has something for everyone.

“We’re going to have it all,” Lichty said. “It’s really a foodie experience. We’re

Lichty said customers will be greeted to a smoothie bar when they walk in. A Vero Coffee & Gelato shop also will

be in the store, as will a salad bar, hot foods bar, specialty cheese department, luxury wines and organic food.

The Mariano’s chain bought 11 Chicago-area Dominick’s stores from Safeway, Inc. in December for $36

million. Other stores were bought by grocery chains including Jewel-Osco and Whole Foods.

“As we considered which Dominick’s to purchase, Shorewood was always one we considered,” Lichty said.

“It’s such a large community, and other communities will also come here.”

Shorewood Community Development Director Karen James said having the Dominick’s vacancy filled within a year was a relief.

“We think it’s a perfect fit,” James said. “Residents are asking for this. It’s filling a niche. They don’t have to go to Naperville, Frankfort or Orland Park.”

James said Mariano’s is projected to perform much better than Dominick’s did, according to how the Mariano’s in Frankfort has fared since it opened in 2013.

Mariano’s will have a couple of ceremonies before opening Tuesday. The store also will have plenty of food samplings from opening through closing every day.

“The majority of people don’t want to come to a grocery store,” Lichty said. “But we’re making the shopping experience easy and fun again.”

Metra board will use meeting to lobby for more trains

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – An upcoming Metra meeting in Joliet will be an opportunity to push for a fourth commuter train on the Heritage Corridor line, a member of the agency’s Citizen Advisory Board said.

The Metra Board of Directors meeting is set for 10 a.m.

July 18 in the Will County Board room, 302 N. Chicago St. “The most pressing thing for Will County short-term is to get more lines on the Heritage Corridor,” said Bill Molony, a Lockport resident who serves on the citizen board.

“As a result, Will County residents by the hundreds are driving to Naperville every morning and crowding on to your Burlington North-

ern Sante Fe trains,” Molony told the Metra Board of Directors in May. “More yet are driving to Orland Park to board your SouthWest Service trains. These are all commuters that would be using the Heritage Corridor line if there were more train frequencies.”

Metra currently operates six trains on the line, which runs from Union Station in Joliet to Chicago Union Station. Intermediate stops are at Lockport, Lemont, Willow Springs and Summit. An additional train stop is planned in Romeoville.

“This will be a good opportunity for Will County’s elected officials and residents to push Metra for more service,” Molony said.

The three morning trains leave Joliet for Chicago at

5:45, 6:25 and 7:05 a.m. The three evening trains leave Chicago for Joliet at 4:50, 5:25 and 6:12 p.m. The full run takes about an hour and five minutes.

Molony said he’d like to see a fourth train added to the mix, one that would leave Joliet later in the morning and Chicago earlier in the afternoon.

Molony said Metra could provide the fourth train without additional capital expenditure by sending its 5:45 a.m. train back to Joliet for a later morning run, presumably about 7:45 a.m. based on the current schedule. Likewise, an earlier afternoon train, presumably leaving about 4:05 p.m., could be sent back to Chicago for the 6:12 p.m run.

However the biggest chal-

lenge won’t be convincing Metra of the need, Molony said. It will be convincing Canadian National Railway Company, which owns the tracks on the Heritage Corridor from 21st Street in Chicago to Jackson Street in Joliet.

“Canadian National has not been very cooperative,” Molony said. “They say they can’t spare the track capacity.”

Messages left with Canadian National seeking comment were not immediately returned.

Further complicating the situation are other ownership issues. To the north, Amtrak owns the track from 21st Street in Chicago to Chicago Union Station. To the south, Union Pacific Railroad owns the track from

Jackson Street to Union Station in Joliet.

“Years ago it was all one railroad,” Molony said.

“Now Metra is dependent on three other companies’ railroads, but can’t change tracks or schedules without them.”

However, both Amtrak and Union Pacific have proved to be more willing to work with Metra on track issues, Molony said.

Metra spokesman Michael Gillis said the Joliet meeting is part of the agency’s plan to periodically meet in the collar counties. A similar meeting in DuPage County in April was well attended, Gillis said.

“The idea is for people that can’t travel downtown to come to a meeting closer to them,” Gillis said.

Housing project denied funding

By BILL WIMBISCUS bwimbiscus@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A Housing Authority of Joliet plan to replace low-income residences at Des Plaines Gardens Homes with mixed-income homes and duplexes failed to receive state funding.

HAJ applied in March to the Illinois Housing Development Authority for low-income housing tax credits.

Under the program, tax credits are purchased by private investors, typically corporations or banks, and the subse-

quent funding used for redevelopment.

HAJ hoped to replace most of Des Plaines Gardens Homes’ 122 low-income housing units and redevelop the site with 69 single-family homes and duplexes.

Michael Simelton, HAJ’s chief executive officer, said he was disappointed with the decision, but remained optimistic that IHDA would approve funding.

“This is not our first rodeo,” Simelton said. “We’ve had a couple of IHDA awards in the past. Phase I for Liberty

Simelton said HAJ received clarification on what it needs for the next round of IHDA applications on July 25. The agency was told by IHDA to identify a remedia-

tion funding source should any contamination be found on the site. IHDA also wants the Joliet agency to list a staff member with experience in dealing with blended income housing.

“It’s pretty straightforward,” Simelton said.

Simelton said he expects to hear back on the next application by mid-September. If the project fails to receive funding, HAJ would then re-apply next spring.

“We’re going to keep trying,” Simelton said.

HAJ was able to just meet

IHDA’s March 31 submission deadline following 11th hour negotiations with Joliet over housing density, utility access and stormwater detention on the 7-acre site.

Residents displaced by the demolition would receive housing vouchers and be given first option of moving back into the redeveloped facility.

Housing units not replaced at Des Plaines Gardens eventually could be transferred to HAJ’s Liberty Meadow Estates facility, where the authority has land available for additional construction.

Forest Preserve will open dog park in Joliet THE HERALD–NEWS JOLIET – The Forest Preserve District of Will County is set to open its fifth dog park July 19 in Joliet.

A celebration is planned for the opening of the dog park at the McClintock Road

Access for the Rock Run Preserve, which is at the northeast corner of U.S. Route 6 and McClintock Road.

The public is invited to the event, which will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

The dog park features three separate 2.5-acre fenced

areas with one enclosure reserved for small dogs weighing less than 35 pounds. The park includes parking, a latrine, sidewalks, a picnic area and a drinking fountain.

The opening day celebration will include music from the Channahon Junior High

School Band. There will be craft activities, an inflatable obstacle course for children and games of fetch. The first 250 dogs that attend will receive free, paw-shaped water bowls.

Other Forest Preserve dog parks are at Hammel Woods

in Shorewood, Whalon Lake in Naperville, Messenger Marsh in Homer Glen and Forked Creek in Wilmington.

On March 16, 1984, Walker, who was 17 at the time, and Xavier D. Williams, then 16, called for a taxi to rob the

driver. According to court records, they had Charles Davis, 29, stop in the 1200 block of Clark Street where Williams got out and Walker shot the Crest Hill man with a sawedoff shotgun he had hidden under his coat. Walker later told police he killed Davis so he could not be identified.

Williams was sentenced to 35 years in prison but was released before October 2011, according to court records.

Walker remains in the Pontiac Correctional Center.

If Livas agrees with the defense’s argument, Walker would receive a new sentencing hearing, not a new trial.

Moore tries to overturn conviction from ’08 murder

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A man’s claims that he was prosecuted by the wrong agency is unlikely to have any effect on his murder conviction.

Alexander Moore spent part of his 25th birthday on Tuesday appearing in court before Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes. Moore is

serving a 73-year prison sentence for the Jan. 12, 2008, shooting of Kyle Parnell inside a recording studio on Ruby Street.

While Moore stood at the bench with a Department of Corrections officer a few steps behind him, attorney Robert Lewin said the case wasn’t handled correctly before Moore’s trial in 2010. The special prosecutor was called

in immediately after the slaying because Parnell’s mother was a technical support employee in the Will County State’s Attorney’s office.

“There was never any order appointing the attorney general’s office [to] exclusively prosecute a case.

The statute saying they can assist doesn’t mean they can automatically take over,” Lewin said. Lewin did not

become Moore’s lawyer until late last year.

But Alessio Policandriotes was the original judge on the case and said a review of the record by both sides before next month’s court date should clarify things.

Alessio Policandriotes said she once had a relative tried by the attorney general’s office and she informed Moore and his original at-

torney of this potential conflict at the time. The defense chose to continue the trial in her courtroom and assigned prosecution, she said.

“Mr. Moore was well aware there was not an order appointing the attorney general,” the judge said. “I want the record clear. This was not simply failure to reject [the A.G.] but firm acceptance.”

He has been playing hockey and lately he has pretty bad low back pain after being on the ice for a game or an intense practice. He seems to me to be really young to have low back pain. Any ideas? Ryan R.

A: First of all, thank you for submitting the question Ryan. You are correct in thinking that low back pain in a young athlete is abnormal. Especially pain that follows a pattern like your son’s. Pain after every game or practice is something that you should have your family chiropractor take a look at as soon as possible.

Your family chiropractor will be able to examine your son and recommend the best course of action based on what he or she inds wrong. In most cases like your son’s, the answer can be as simple as some spinal manipulation and the correct stretching/exercises. That would be a very simple ix indeed and your son’s pain would likely respond very quickly. Some cases will need further imaging or a referral to an orthopedic doctor. Luckily, you should be able to get into your chiro quickly and they can order the tests or referral the same day.

Your son does fall into a higher risk category for what medically is known as a “spondylolysis” or “pars interarticularis” defect. This injury is actually a type of low back fracture from repetitive stress on part of a vertebra. This is a more serious cause of low back pain in young athletes that needs to be diagnosed and can need more aggressive rehab to give the athlete the best chance at a full recovery.

Working with many local youth football teams gives us plenty of experience getting to the cause of low back pain in a young athlete. It is always best to have your family Chiropractor take a look at any pain, especially low back pain, your young athlete is sufering from.

Lockport debuts new city website

For one, they may find it easier to access City Council documents.

They may also find they can search for information on the website better and view it better on tablets or mobile devices.

That’s what city officials are expecting when their new website, cityoflockport. net, goes live Thursday. Under a contract with CivicPlus, a web development business for governments, the city’s website promises to be more transparent and helpful for residents.

“I think in this digital age you want this one resource that people can utilize in different ways,” City Administrator Ben Benson said.

Going forward, the website may allow for credit card payments for city services, said Jack Linehan, assistant to the city administrator. Benson said the city also will launch a new Facebook page and other social media for residents

Features of the new city of Lockport website will include: n Accessible City Council agendas and minutes. n Better search functions. n Available in more than 100 languages. n Viewable on tablet and mobile devices. with the debut of the new website.

One of the goals behind the website’s redesign was to make it more simple. City staff will be able to access the website and edit information better, Linehan said.

Lockport will pay CivicPlus $12,886 annually for the next three years to build and run the website.

City officials hoped a new website would serve as “onestop shop” that caters to residents and potential developers.

City officials also believe that making city information more accessible on the website would help reduce Freedom of Information Act requests by giving the public easier access to the records maintained by the city clerk.

CHANNAHON – State Sen. Pat McGuire, D-Joliet, shared some good news Monday evening with the Channahon Village Board.

The $22 million pledged for road and bridge work at the Route 6 and I-55 interchange in April 2013 has been appropriated as part of the state’s $1.1 billion roads bill.

The project is designed to make the interchange safer, less congested and more conducive to development. Construction could begin in two to five years. Accidents are also down this summer at the I-55 construction area, which McGuire said is thanks in part to warning signage that extends farther out before the work.

The decrease in accidents was confirmed by Channahon Police Chief Jeff Wold.

McGuire also shared some bad news: A lowered speed limit on the I-55 western frontage road requested by the village was not approved by the Illinois Department of Transportation.

A year ago, Wold asked if McGuire could help reduce the speed limit on the section of the road between Route 6 and Bluff Road while construction is proceeding on the interstate.

Drivers are “leap-frogging” off the interstate at Route 6,

Wold said, then jumping back on at Bluff. They tend to speed along the stretch, Wold said, at the same time local traffic and school buses are trying to navigate safely.

In other news, the Village Hall’s board room will receive an upgrade of new video equipment at a price not to exceed $20,000 from Tinley Park company AV Xpress. Trustees approved the action Monday.

Mike Petrick, the village’s new director of community development and information systems, said the technology in the room is more than a decade old, and some parts no longer work. Included in the purchase will be replacing the projection system with a large LCD display; replacing the ceiling-mounted televisions with larger LCD displays; a new touch screen interface and controller; as well as other devices and installation.

The resignation of police officer Mark Soustek also was approved with the go-ahead to the police chief to begin the testing process for a new officer. Soustek was recognized by the Village Board in 2011 for his contributions as an undercover officer with the narcotics squad of the Illinois Metropolitan Enforcement Group. Chief Wold said Soustek helped take thousands of dollars worth of narcotics and those dealing them off the street.

The vice president of ComEd visited Wilmington on Thursday to have “a first-hand look,” Orr said.

Crews from Montana to Massachusetts to Kentucky were in Wilmington to help restore service, he said. “There were over 18 crews here Thursday working on our power line damage.”

“It was good to see everybody come together ... not only neighbor to neighbor but even businesses ... The businesses in town were there to help their customers in any way they could.

“It was good to see. That’s what’s really important in a small town.”

WILMINGTON – Wilmington Mayor Marty Orr learned two new phrases this year: polar vortex and double derecho.

At Wilmington’s Tuesday night City Council meeting, Orr said the weather’s impact on the Island City was immense, but that the city crews, emergency personnel and the people of Wilmington pulled together to meet the challenge.

The cost of the emergency response was raised by Alderman Fran Tudor as the council discussed the upcoming 2015 budget. Tudor urged that the city consider the unexpected expenses, such as the storm costs, while working on the 2015 budget. City Administrator Tony Graff said those numbers are being gathered and will be reviewed by the finance committee on Tuesday.

He was a WWII Veteran of the US Navy. Bob worked as a supervisor at Ray J. Benoit Construction Co. in Kankakee, and was also a partner of the V & C Construction Co. for 20 years. She was born November 26, 1931, in Chicago, to the late Mildred (nee Ward) and Harry Biddle.

She volunteered at the Shady Oaks Cerebral Palsy summer program, worked with the early childhood development program at the Encyclopedia Brittanica Center at the University of St. Francis (Joliet), and founded Fountainview Banquet Center, a special site for many different events. She was a member of Sacred Heart Parish (Joliet) and Mary Mother of Jesus Inclusive Catholic Community (Sarasota). With Joe,

Illinois woman seeks clemency in buried-alive case

By JASON KEYSER The Associated Press CHICAGO – Tearful relatives appealed for clemency Tuesday for an Illinois woman they say was wrongly convicted nearly three decades ago of taking part in a macabre kidnap-for-ransom plot in which a businessman was lured from his home and buried alive.

Testifying before the Illinois Prisoner Review Board in Chicago, Nancy Rish’s supporters described her as a woman ensnared in an abusive relationship with the drug dealer who concocted the 1987 kidnapping of Kankakee businessman Stephen Small. They said she knew nothing of her boyfriend’s plans even as he had her pick him up from the

remote, wooded burial site and drive him between phone booths where he made ransom calls.

Small was a member of a prominent media family from Kankakee and a great-grandson of Len Small, Illinois’ governor in the 1920s. He was buried alive in a plywood box under several feet of sand and suffocated when a crudely fash-

ioned breathing tube running to the surface failed before a ransom could be paid.

Rish’s boyfriend, Daniel Edwards, told police after his arrest that he acted alone, but he did not say that at trial as he fought to avoid the death penalty. Now, having abandoned his own appeals, Edwards has provided two affidavits stating that he alone committed the

crime and concealed his plans from Rish.

Assistant Illinois Attorney General Erin O’Connell told the review board the state still firmly believes Rish was a willing participant.

The panel could vote within weeks. If clemency is recommended, Gov. Pat Quinn would have no deadline for a decision.

Eneix was born the daughter of Theodore and Nellie (nee Blaine) Orlomoski on November 16, 1922 in Channahon, and passed from this life into Eternity on July 7, 2014 in Beloit, Wisconsin, at the age of 91 years.

Mary was united in marriage to Lloyd H. Eneix on October 23, 1943.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Lloyd H. Eneix of Beloit, WI; two sons, Bradford Eneix and wife, Dianne of McFarland, WI, and Randy Eneix and wife, Nancy of Denver, CO. He was a lifelong member of United Methodist Church of New Lenox. In addition to farming with family, Bob enjoyed fishing, card games and spending time with family and friends at Bob and Dee’s lake home in Lake Tomahawk, WI, Bob’s favorite place.

Gov. Quinn focuses on Rauner’s tax returns

CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn says Republican challenger Bruce Rauner should release full tax returns for 2013 and previous years soon to reveal potential conflicts of interest or tax loopholes.

The Chicago Democrat and supporters have focused on the issue recently. Quinn said releasing the documents would clear up questions and said previous GOP nominees for governor have done so.

Rauner has released three years of returns. Rauner spokesman Mike Schrimpf said Tuesday that the Winnetka businessman has filed for an extension of the April 15 filing

8 leaks in Executive Mansion roof

SPRINGFIELD – Workers have started patching eight leaks in the roof at the nearly 160-yearold Executive Mansion after Gov. Pat Quinn approved the emergency repairs.

The amount of money spent on the repairs won’t exceed $40,000 and will cover inspectors, patching damaged sections and repairing damage to interior rooms. That damage is to four rooms on the mansion’s third floor. Officials expect work to be done in a few weeks.

“It’s a careful balancing act of preserving the historic character of the building, keeping it available to the public and keeping it open for rentals, which support the operation of the building,” Quinn spokesman Dave Blanch-

ette told The Springfield State Journal-Register for a Tuesday story.

Plans for a major rehabilitation of the mansion are on hold while more urgent financial issues are addressed, Blanchette said. That renovation would include brick work, trim repairs and a new elevator. Blanchette estimates those costs at a “couple million” dollars.

Isabelle “Belle” retired in 1995, from Fossil Ridge Library in Braidwood.

She also served as a copywriter and frequent columnist for The Braidwood Journal. Belle spent a lifetime in service to the community and church. In 1991, she was named Catholic Woman of the Year by the Immaculate Conception Church (ICC); in 1994, she was awarded ICC’s Parishioner of the Year. In 1995, she received the Community Builder’s Award by the Masonic Lodge.

In 2001, in recognition for a lifetime of service, the Office of the Illinois Lieutenant Governor presented her the Illinois Woman of Achievement Award in a ceremony at City Hall.

Belle was a founder of the Braidwood Senior Citizens Group. In 1975, she established Braidwood’s

Annual Winter Clothing Drive. In 1981, she founded the Braidwood Food Fund, a seminal organization for the community helping those less fortunate. Isabelle and her helpers ran this organization until the onset of her illness in 2007.

Other organizations to which Isabelle volunteered her time include Audio Books Delivery Service (blind), American Lung Association, (original) Braidwood Public Library, Braidwood Public Schools, ICC catechism classes, interfaith catechism classes, ICC (organist, guitarist, cantor - over 50 years), Interfaith Choir, Joliet Catholic Academy (JCA) fundraising, JCA Jubilation (singing and dancing), Kuzma Care Cottage Food Pantry (Wilmington), Medical Testing, Patterson Funeral Home (organist and past music director) and Sister Act (performer).

Clubs and organizations of which she was a member include Catholic Charities (Joliet Diocese), Council of Catholic Women, Fabulous Forties Reunion Committee, Family Care Group, Friends of the (Fossil Ridge) Library, Kindergarten Mothers’ Club, PTA and PTO. Surviving are four children, Dennis (Susan) Turner of Cleveland, TN, Maureen (Frank) Perruca of Braidwood, Timothy (Kimberly) Turner of Chicago, and Kathleen Turner of Naperville; one brother, Hugh (Judy) Mulligan of Coal City;

He was a member of the American Legion, Wilmington Moose, Braidwood Rec Club, and the Arbor Association. Tom was a past board member of St. Rose School, and belonged to the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce, Retailers and Clerks Association and the Dry Cleaners Association.

DENVER – For the first time, President Barack Obama is inching into one of the highly competitive races that could determine whether Democrats maintain control of the Senate this fall. Obama’s trip to Colorado to raise money for Sen. Mark Udall underscores the political risks for vulnerable Democrats of being linked with the increasingly unpopular president.

Obama will headline a high-dollar fundraiser for Udall in Denver on Wednesday, but the event is off-limits to news cameras. Udall’s office also said the senator will not attend an economic speech the president plans to deliver in Denver, ensuring that there will be no photos of the two men together.

Republicans quickly pounced on Udall’s plans, eager to link the incumbent to a president with sagging approval ratings, both nationally and in Colorado.

The Republicans’ site selection committee backed Cleveland over donor-rich Dallas, and the full 168-member RNC is expected to ratify the choice next month. The move reflects the role Ohio – and its 18 electoral votes – plays in presidential campaigns.

A successful convention is a boon not just to the political party, but also to the local economy.

In a post-convention report, organizers of Tampa, Florida’s 2012 GOP convention said its $58 million in fundraising resulted in a $214 million direct economic impact. Some 50,000 activists, officials and reporters descended on the Tampa area for the convention, officials said.

The convention offers Cleveland an opportunity to re-introduce itself after decades of bad fortunes.

Israel launches strikes on Gaza Aerial assault is largest offensive in region in almost two years

By JOSEF FEDERMAN and NAJIB JOBAIN The Associated Press JERUSALEM – Israel on Tuesday launched its largest offensive in the Gaza Strip in almost two years, carrying out a blistering aerial assault on scores of targets and killing 25 people in what officials called an open-ended operation aimed at ending weeks of heavy rocket fire. As Gaza militants unleashed salvos on cities including Jerusalem and Tel Aviv, Israel mobilized forces along the border for a possible ground invasion.

The offensive set off the heaviest fighting between Israel and the Islamic militant group Hamas since an eightday battle in November 2012.

The militants fired about 160 rockets at Israel, including a strike that reached the northern city of Hadera for the first time, while Israel said it attacked more than 150 sites across Gaza.

Palestinian medics reported at least 25 dead, including six killed in an airstrike that flattened an apartment building in southern Gaza and set off widespread panic.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said continued rocket attacks on Israeli communities would not be tolerated.

“Therefore, I have ordered the military to significantly broaden its operation against Hamas terrorists and against the other terrorist groups inside Gaza,” he said on national TV. “I call on you to display patience because this operation could take time.”

Israel and Hamas are bitter enemies that have engaged in numerous rounds of fighting over the years. But until recently, they had been observing a truce that ended the previous hostilities in 2012.

Tensions have been rising since Palestinian militants kidnapped three Israeli teenagers in the West Bank on June 12. Accusing Hamas of being behind the abductions, Israel launched a crackdown on the group’s members in the West Bank and arrested hundreds of people. Hamas, which

Abdullah said he received calls from President Barack Obama and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, and he was told that Kerry would be flying to the Afghan capital on Friday in a bid to help defuse the crisis. State Department officials accompanying Kerry in Beijing declined to comment on his travel plans.

The situation deteriorated last week after the bodies of the Israeli youths were found, and a Palestinian teenager in Jerusalem was abducted and burned to death in what Palestinians believe was a revenge attack. Six Jewish Israelis have been arrested in the killing, and the rocket fire from Gaza has increased in recent days.

The fighting raged throughout the day. In its fiercest attack, an airstrike flattened the home of a Hamas militant in the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis, reducing the concrete structure into a smoldering pile of rubble.

Panicked residents fled, shouting “God is great.” Some had bloody faces, and crying mothers held small children as they ran away. Screaming Palestinians took away motionless bodies. Palestinian medical officials said six people, including two children, were

killed. Israel’s military said it had called the home shortly before the airstrike to warn civilians to leave, something it has done in past fighting as well.

The normally bustling streets of Gaza City were deserted late Tuesday. Fearing an Israeli ground operation, many residents from areas near the border moved to stay with relatives living deeper inside Gaza.

In southern Israel, hundreds of thousands of citizens were ordered to stay close to home because of the rockets.

Israeli streets were also quieter in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem after attempted rocket strikes set off air-raid sirens in Israel’s two largest cities. The Jerusalem municipality said it was opening special bomb shelters.

Militants twice fired rockets at Tel Aviv, Israel’s commercial capital, sending people scurrying for cover. Both were intercepted by the “Iron

Dome” rocket defense system, with the second shown on live TV, as a winding plume of smoke followed the interceptor into the black skies, culminating with a flash.

Late Tuesday, Hamas said it fired four rockets toward Jerusalem, and two distant booms were heard from the city’s center. Three rockets landed in the Jerusalem area, officials said, and police said there were no injuries.

The Israeli military said one rocket exploded in the northern Israeli city of Hadera, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) from Gaza, in the farthest distance a rocket from Gaza has reached so far. It caused no injuries, the army added. With its new reach, Hamas’ rockets now have an estimated 5 million people – more than half of Israel’s population – in range.

Hamas said it had used a new rocket called the R-160 after one of its leaders, Abdel Rantisi, who was killed last decade.

Ukraine gets aggressive toward separatists DONETSK, Ukraine – Ukraine’s government took an increasingly aggressive stance Tuesday toward the pro-Russia separatists, vowing to expunge them from their reduced area of control and imposing new conditions before peace talks can restart.

But as the military moves to encircle the rebel-held territory in eastern Ukraine, the government also said it would stop using the air and artillery strikes that drove the rebels from other towns so as to avoid terrorizing civilians.

Ukraine has displayed growing confidence in recent days after driving the insurgents from Slovyansk, a city that had been the heart of the armed resistance since mid-April.

Security officials said Tuesday the area held by the rebels has now been reduced by half.

We’ll miss Al the Pal What did former U.S. Sen. Alan J. Dixon, who died Sunday at the age of 86, do for you?

For starters, open your purse or wallet and take a good look at your driver’s license.

Before Dixon was Illinois secretary of state from 1977 to 1981, licenses consisted of words on flimsy pieces of paper.

Upon taking office, Dixon declared, “I’m going to put a picture on your driver’s license so you’ll have an identification card,” he said in a 2011 interview with Sauk Valley Media, a sister publication of The Herald-News.

“I’m going to issue another I.D. card for non-drivers,” he continued.

Dixon also established a personnel code to protect the office’s 3,000-plus employees.

Further, “I eliminated the chop shops,” he said.

And probably most important, for Illinoisans tired of changing their vehicle license plates once a year during cold weather, Dixon launched multiyear plates so the only annual change necessary was affixing a new license sticker.

Accolades for Dixon, a Democrat from Belleville, have mentioned his friendliness (“Al the Pal” was his nickname), his ability to work with Democrats and Republicans, and his firm desire to get things done for the people of Illinois.

He drew praise from U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin, a Democrat (“I lost a pal today, and Illinois lost a man who brought honor to public service”) and U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk, a Republican (“We owe Alan a debt of gratitude for all he did for our state”).

Dixon mentioned his philosophy in a memoir, “The Gentleman from Illinois,” published last year: “Generally speaking, my political career was built on goodwill and accommodation.”

His career in elective office was long: police magistrate, Illinois House, Illinois Senate, state treasurer, secretary of state, and U.S. Senate, where he served from 1981 to 1993.

Indiana economy outperforms Illinois SPRINGFIELD – For every one job Illinois has created during the past decade, Indiana has created 35, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

I’ve been to Indiana.

I know Hoosiers.

And the average Hoosier isn’t any smarter than the rest of us.

They may think so, but we know better.

But let’s face it, their economy is outperforming Illinois’ by leaps and bounds.

The two states have identical climates – rich farmland, strong manufacturing heritages and similar workforces.

But the Hoosier State is kicking our economic butt six ways to Sunday.

It’s almost as though the Land of Lincoln showed up for race in a 1957 Edsel and can’t understand why our neighboring states are

Folks, Illinois has one of the lowest job creation rates in the Midwest, according the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

This past month, Illinois’ unemployment rate fell from 7.9 percent to 7.5 percent.

Sounds good, huh?

Think again.

The total number of jobs contracted by 2,600, with a loss of 5,400 private-sector jobs and an increase of 2,800 government jobs. The decline in the unemployment rate was driven by workers just giving up.

When workers stop searching for a job, they are no longer count-

ed as unemployed. Illinois’ labor force shrank by 14,494 people in May as Illinoisans threw up their hands and quit knocking on doors and thumbing through the want ads Texas led all states with 48,400 new private-sector jobs, according to the federal labor statistics.

Here are a few things Texas and Indiana have going for them: • Both are right-to-work states, where are workers are free to join a union or not. Increasingly, industry uses a state’s right-to-work status as a litmus test to determine where they will expand. By the way, since Indiana became a rightto-work state in 2012, wages there have gone up.

• In March, Indiana cut business taxes. Illinois lawmakers, on the other hand, spent the bulk of their legislative session pondering

With the new state budget year having begun July 1 and a local senior outreach event coming up July 22, now is a good time to inform seniors about the state’s renewed commitment to them.

This year, the most significant new initiative we enacted for seniors was the Home Care Consumer Bill of Rights. This new law, contained in House Bill 5852, seeks to protect some of the most vulnerable citizens in Illinois and ensures their basic rights are provided for when they are receiving home care services.

First-day leaders capture titles Maddox, Gass among winners at Joliet Park District Junior Tournament

By CURT HERRON cherron@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The two leaders in the top divisions of the Joliet Park District Junior Tournament at Inwood Golf Course had fairly safe leads heading into Tuesday’s second day of play.

But if any of the other competitors had plans on challenging for titles, their hopes were dashed after Sarah Maddox and Huston Gass turned in even better showings than they had posted on Monday to kick off the event.

Maddox shot a 76 to follow-up on her 79 on the opening day to turn a four-stroke lead over Trinity Hill into a 14-stroke victory with a 155 total in the Girls A Division.

Meanwhile in the Boys A Division, Gass improved upon a 71 with a 69 on Tuesday to give him a two-day total of 140, which was 13 strokes better than runner-up Kyle Sheppard, who was five back after the first round.

There was one division where the first-day lead got reduced, but not by very much.

Jake Pluth struggled a bit on Tuesday and saw his score rise from 79 to 85 but Jake Bugajski was able to cut just one stroke off of his 11-stroke opening-round deficit.

In the two youngest divisions, in which competitors played only nine holes each day, there was more drama, especially in the Girls B Division, which went down to the wire.

Maddy Palmer and Emma Baxter were tied at 45 after Monday, and Baxter made things interesting by getting an eagle on the ninth hole on Tuesday.

But Palmer managed to finish with 47 to give her a 92 total, which was one stroke better than Baxter and two strokes ahead of Heather Bush, who was the same distance back after Monday’s action.

Brandyn Collins bounced back from a 49 with a 44 to

give him a 93 while Trax shot a 49 on Tuesday to give him a two-day total of 95.

While the temperatures were a little more pleasant Tuesday, golfers had to contend with windier conditions

than they encountered Monday.

Maddox, a senior at ReedCuster who competes on the boys squad, hopes her improved play this summer is a good sign that she not only

can get back to the IHSA Class 1A finals but also make a run at all-state honors there.

“I struggled more with my putting on the first day but I made a couple of putts today, which saved me,” Maddox said. “I struggled with a wind on a couple of my drives and a little more with my chipping today out of some thicker rough. I’ve definitely improved and think that I can do a lot better this year.”

After his even-par effort on Monday, Gass looked like he might finish above that mark.

But a good back nine boosted him to a two-under finish.

After taking part in his hometown tournament in Streator, Gass and his two brothers will again compete for the University of St. Francis squad.

“I kind of struggled on the front and shot a 38, but then I shot a 31 on the back,” Gass said. “I had five birdies on the back nine and just hit the ball a lot better. It was a little windier and that definitely came into play, but I was hitting the ball good.

“I know that my brothers and I are ready to go for this season and we want to win as many tournaments as we can.”

While Pluth struggled with his short game on Tuesday, the future Joliet Catholic freshman enjoyed a safe enough lead after Day 1 that he could afford to play conservatively.

“Actually, I hit the ball really good but my putting was off again and I wasn’t hitting my wedges good, so I played everything safe,” Pluth said.

Although he won’t be hosting the next Junior event at a Park District course, Inwood manager Brian Legan hopes a good number of competitors will sign up for the Joliet Junior Amateur, which is July 28 through 29 at Woodruff Golf Course.

Still, the result in Game 1 of Tuesday night’s doubleheader at Normal was all too familiar

for the Joliet Slammers.

Grant DeBruin and Adam Giacalone walloped back-toback home runs in a three-run fourth inning, but other than that, not much went right in an 11-3 loss to the CornBelters.

but Normal (24-21) was nowhere near finished. The CornBelters scored two in the bottom of the fourth, two in the fifth and another in the sixth to put it on cruise control.

Right-hander Travis Bradshaw took the loss in his Slammers’ debut. He allowed seven

hits and six runs, five of them earned, in 2 2⁄ 3 innings. Sam Moore, Harry Marino and Tyler Thicke worked in relief.

By HOWARD ULMAN The Associated Press BOSTON – Conor Gillaspie hit a tie-breaking, two-run homer in the sixth inning for his third hit of the game and the White Sox beat the struggling Boston Red Sox, 8-3, on Tuesday night.

Boston did manage to snap the White Sox’s pitchers’ streak of 22 scoreless innings but lost for the seventh time in eight games as the defending World Series champions remained in last place in the AL East.

The White Sox are 5-1 in their last six games, allowing three runs or less in all six with a scoring margin of 25-9.

John Danks (8-6) started with four shutout innings on Tuesday night after Hector Noesi beat Seattle, 1-0, on Sunday and Scott Carroll won, 4-0, Monday night when Boston had just two hits.

The White Sox squandered a 3-0 lead when the Red Sox tied it with three runs in the fifth.

But the White Sox went ahead to stay with two in the sixth and then added three runs in the ninth. Jose Abreu led off the sixth with a single against Brandon Workman (1-3) and stayed at first when the next two batters were retired. Then Gillaspie hit a 3-and-2 pitch just inside the pole in right field for his second homer of the season.

By JOE KAY The Associated Press CINCINNATI – Move Jay Bruce to first base, and he homers. Put him back in his customary spot in right field, he homers again.

Bruce is following the deepest slump of his career with one of his best stretches of homers.

Bruce returned to right field and hit another two-run shot Tuesday afternoon, helping Johnny Cueto extend his winning streak against the Cubs and leading the Cincinnati Reds to a 4-2 victory over the Cubs in the opener of a doubleheader.

The Reds put first baseman Joey Votto back on the disabled list before the game, hoping a strained muscle above his left knee will heal enough to let him play this season. They are using different players – including Bruce – at the position for now.

Bruce played first base for the first time since high school and hit a two-run homer in his final at-bat during a 9-3 win on Monday night in the opener of the five-game series. He was back in the outfield and homered again in the first inning off lefthander Travis Wood (7-7).

“He’s been taking advantage of pitches to drive,” Reds manager Bryan Price said.

The left-handed-hitting outfielder has 50 homers off lefties during the last five seasons, the most by any player in the majors.

Cubs lose again CINCINNATI – Cincinnati overcame a 5-0 deficit in the second game of doubleheader against the Cubs to win, 6-5, sending the Cubs to their fifth straight loss.

“You know when Johnny has the ball that you have a legitimate chance to win the game.

We were able to pull it out.”

The Reds traded Wood to the Cubs as part of a three-player package for reliever Sean Marshall after the 2011 season. Wood fell to 1-5 in eight starts against his former team. He gave up eight hits and four runs in 5⅓ innings.

Defender Gonzalo Segares has been through this before.

He has heard all the names linked to the Fire by rumors, speculation or plain wishful thinking.

So with the summer transfer window opening Tuesday, Segares won’t be paying too much attention to who’s connected to the Fire until they actually arrive at Toyota Park.

“It’s been like that for many years now,” Segares said. “There’s a lot of rumors.

People are always going to talk about it.”

This year, there has been some chatter that former Fire star DaMarcus Beasley, U.S. World Cup hero Jermaine Jones or Brazilian attacker Robinho would sign with a Fire team that needs some sort of boost. Coach Frank Yallop said bringing in a designated player is ‘‘one of the thoughts,” although he didn’t provide names.

But that doesn’t mean the Fire, who visit the Atlanta Silverbacks for a U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal Wednesday, will sign a player for the sake of doing it. They want the fit to be right, both in the short term and long term, and not bring in a player just to placate fans or generate post-World Cup buzz.

“I just had a good conversation [Monday] for an hour with [Fire chairman] Andrew [Hauptman], and he’s up for anything,” Yallop said. “He said, ‘I’m ready to do what you think is right for this club.’ So

By JOE COWLEY jcowley@suntimes.com The patience of the Bulls front office continued to be tested Tuesday, as the indecision of Carmelo Anthony still seems to be messing with even Plan B from being pursued.

According to a source, the Bulls feel like if Anthony goes elsewhere, they are one of the leading candidates to land free-agent big man Pau Gasol … unless that elsewhere just so happens to be the Lakers, which in turn could start the dominoes falling and Gasol also staying with his former team in Los Angeles.

“It’s frustrating for [the front office], but it’s free agency,” the source said.

That’s one way to describe it.

Besides the Bulls, Gasol was being targeted by Oklahoma City, Miami, the Lakers, San Antonio and the New York Knicks.

The Thunder and the Bulls, however, were the two teams that impressed Gasol the most, at least until Tuesday when

reports from a Monday meeting between Gasol and Thunder coach Scott Brooks resulted in Oklahoma City feeling like the money wouldn’t work with Gasol.

Because of cap space, the Thunder are limited to near the $5 million mark in what they can offer.

The Bulls will have a bit more financial freedom for the 34-year-old, depending on the negotiations with Nikola Mirotic, and could come closer to the $7- to $9-million range.

The Bulls met with Gasol in Los Angeles on Thursday, but it was his meetings and talks with All-Star center Joakim Noah that has really impressed Gasol, said the source.

Not only would Gasol walk onto a playoff-caliber team, but a team that plays an unselfish style of basketball that he likes, as well as having a starting job.

During the talks with Gasol, the Spaniard revealed his desire to start wherever he goes, and while Taj Gibson has been focusing on moving from

a Sixth Man of the Year Award second-place finisher last season to a starter, well, Gibson has always maintained that he’ll do “whatever is best for the team.”

Notes: The Bulls announced their Summer League roster Tuesday, highlighted by firstround pick Doug McDermott and last year’s first-round draft choice Tony Snell. Cameron Bairstow, who was selected in the second round in the June draft, will also have a lot of eyes on him.

Former Illinois guard Brandon Paul will also be on the roster. Adrian Griffin will again be the acting head coach, with Andy Greer, Ed Pinckney, Mike Wilhelm and Coby Karl the assistants.

The first game is set for Saturday, as they take on the Clippers at the Thomas & Mack Center.

Longtime athletic trainer Fred Tedeschi left the organization, accepting a position at Oregon State. Assistant trainer Jeff Tanaka will oversee those duties during Summer League.

Assistant Kompon leaving Hawks

By MARK LAZERUS mlazerus@suntimes.com Blackhawks assistant coach Jamie Kompon is leaving the team to become the head coach and general manager of the Portland Winterhawks, a junior team in the Western Hockey League, according to a source.

Kompon has been a Hawks assistant for the past two seasons, replacing Mike Haviland after spending six seasons on the Los Angeles Kings staff.

Before that, he spent nine years with the Blues, working on Joel Quenneville’s staff alongside current Hawks assistant Mike Kitchen. Kompon won back-to-back Stanley Cups, with the Kings in 2012 and the Hawks in 2013.

One of Kompon’s primary responsibilities with the Hawks was coaching the power play, which improved to 10th in the league this past season after placing 19th in his first season.

The Hawks scored on 12-of57 power plays (21.1 percent)

in the playoffs.

Kompon’s departure means the Hawks will open the season with a half-new coaching staff. They just added goaltending coach Jimmy Waite – brother of longtime goalie coach Stephane Waite – to the staff this week after firing Steve Weeks after one season.

The Winterhawks, who have been in the WHL final in each of the past four seasons – winning in 2013 – have scheduled a news conference for Wednesday afternoon.

Bears searching for player who can lighten load for veteran

Overview: Matt Forte in 2013 proved he was the perfect back for Marc Trestman’s offense, accounting for almost onethird of the team’s 6,109 total yards and carrying the ball at least 20 times in all eight of its victories in his best season to date. Trestman’s QB-friendly system and a pair of supersized receivers grabbed many of the headlines on offense, but Forte was the unit’s tone setter and arguably most valuable player.

The Bears figure to have at least one new face alongside Forte in the running back room, fourth-rounder Ka’Deem Carey, the first back drafted by the Bears since Forte, in 2008.

Along with incumbent Michael Ford, three players – journeyman Shaun Draughn and a pair of undrafted rookies, Jordan Lynch and Senorise Perry – will battle for one additional backfield vacancy. After signing a two-year deal in December, fullback Tony Fiammetta is likely in the club’s 2014 plans.

He was used sparingly in his first season – about 20 percent of the team’s snaps – but Fiammetta is a tough blocker who can function as an occasional security valve as a receiver. Unlike last summer when Harvey Unga was in camp, Fiammetta is the only fullback – although one can never truly rule out Unga’s return to Bourbonnais.

Position battle: The Bears would love a back to prove he’s capable of lightening the load of Forte, who has racked up a lot of mileage in his first six seasons. That was the plan with Michael Bush last year, but the veteran’s play fell off precipitously in his second season. The most important criteria the Bears will be evaluating in Bourbannais is dependability in the passing game. It’s an area that has become almost impossible to gauge in the offseason because of a lack of hitting, forcing coaches to evaluate technique and fundamentals in May and June before trying to measure players’ willingness and physicality as blockers in July and August.

Outside of Forte, only Draughn has been asked to block and catch at this level.

Despite Bush’s struggles, Ford couldn’t get on the field, largely because he couldn’t be counted on in those areas.

“The most important criteria the Bears will be evaluating in Bourbannais is dependability in the passing game.”

The good news for all of the candidates in the backup battle is that the Bears aren’t afraid to throw a young guy whom they trust into the fire. The key is developing that trust.

Carey impressed this offseason with his ability to get north and south quickly.

Ford, in addition to holding a slight advantage because of his knowledge of the offense, is also in the mix to handle return responsibilities.

Lynch looked natural catching on the move, but he has never had the task of blocking blitzing linebackers before, something all the others have at some point during their

football lives. Perry has rare speed and suddenness, but he struggled a bit with his hands during OTAs and minicamp.

Fiammetta’s battle to make the roster could become interesting if the Bears want to keep extra tight ends or offensive tackles that could play his blocking role.

Contract situations (information via Spotrac): The Bears are in an enviable situation salary cap in the backfield at a position that has become increasingly devalued.

Forte has a base salary of just less than $6 million this year, a terrific value for one of the NFL’s few do-everything tailbacks. Entering the third year of a four-year, $30 million deal, Forte could be focused on another strong showing perhaps leading to a contract extension, although his age – 29 in December – and Carey’s presence wouldn’t seem to work in his favor.

Carey, Draughn and Ford combined are slated to earn less than $1.5 million in 2014; Lynch and Perry are guaranteed nothing moving forward unless they earn a spot on the 53-man roster or practice squad.

Keep an eye on: Perry. The 6-foot-0, 206-pound undrafted rookie out of Louisville understandably flew under the radar because of higher-profile rookies like Carey and Lynch, but he possesses a unique trait in this competition: speed and explosion.

Perry’s game needs refining, however.

In addition to struggling at times catching balls, he must improve as a route runner, and his blocking abilities are an unknown heading to camp.

But the Bears showed last offseason, when Ford earned a spot on the 53-man roster, that undrafted free agents can stick at this position.

Germany routs Brazil 7-1, reaches World Cup final

By CHRIS LEHOURITES The Associated Press BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil – With Neymar out injured, just about everyone in Brazil knew it would be tough against Germany.

Nobody ever expected this.

The Germans tore apart Brazil’s porous defense time and time again Tuesday, routing the hosts, 7-1, in the World Cup semifinals, the largest margin of defeat at this stage in the history of the tournament.

“We wanted to make the people happy ... unfortunately we couldn’t,” said Brazil defender David Luiz, who had scored in each of the last two matches. “We apologize to all Brazilians.”

The astounding scoreline is sure to overshadow Miroslav Klose’s record-setting 16th career World Cup goal. The strike pushed Klose past Brazil great Ronaldo, who was at the Mineirao Stadium on Tuesday as the Germans advanced to their eighth World Cup final.

Germany will face either Argentina or the Netherlands

on Sunday at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro with a chance to win for the fourth time.

Brazil was playing without Neymar, the team’s key player and the poster boy for the World Cup. He scored four goals in the group stage, but Brazil’s attack seemed to get weaker and weaker as the tournament progressed. The Barcelona striker was ruled out of the tournament with a broken vertebra after getting kneed in the back in the quarterfinal win over Colombia, weakening the sputtering attack even more.

With Neymar sidelined and captain Thiago Silva suspended, the collective hopes of a nation remained high even if expectations were lowered.

The atmosphere at the start of the match was spine-tingling, but the euphoria of the yellow-shirted thousands soon turned to tears as the Germans scored five goals in the first 30 minutes – four of them in a seven-minute span.

“It was very important to stay calm, cool and courageous in facing Brazilian passion,”

Germany coach Joachim Loew said.

The loss matched Brazil’s most-lopsided defeat ever, and it’s the first time the team has lost in an official competitive match on home soil since 1975, when Peru won, 3-1, at the very same stadium in the Copa America. Its last loss at home came in a friendly with Paraguay in 2002.

Previously, Brazil’s biggest World Cup loss was 3-0 to France in the 1998 final. In the 1920 the South American championship, the predecessor of the Copa America, Brazil lost, 6-0, to Uruguay.

“The responsibility for this catastrophic result is mine,” Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari said. “I was in charge.”

It was Germany’s biggest World Cup win since routing Saudi Arabia, 8-0, in a group match in 2002.

On Tuesday, with Bernard playing as the third striker in the place of Neymar, Brazil attacked from the start. But they failed to get any solid chances, and it wasn’t long before the Germans opened up the defense and started the rout.

FOOD CUSTOM CUPCAKES Mother-daughter bakery business seeing success

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Cam Barnett of Joliet and her daughter Betsy Schreiber of Joliet have the perfect formula for a successful cupcake business.

Take one former wedding cake baker (Barnett) and one queen of the casserole and sultan of the slow cooker (Schreiber). Blend with an episode of the Food Network Channel’s “Cupcake Wars,” which Schreiber was watching when she texted Barnett and said, “We can do better than this.”

Mix in memories of Grandma’s mouthwatering bakery, add original flavor combinations – such as Captain Crunch – and then serve up photos and menus on an artsy website at www.heysweetcheeks.com for customers to find and consult.

Yield: A business so booming both women are now working it full time.

“We have 30 different items on our menu,” Barnett said.

“But people also bring us their ideas too and ask, ‘Do you think you could do something like this?’ We’re always willing to give it our best shot.”

Both women fondly recall the luscious dessert spread Barnett’s mother prepared each Easter: five-layer cakes, pineapple upside-down cakes, potica, homemade caramels, cinnamon rolls, Danishes, and homemade Easter egg candies with homemade marshmallow filling.

“We literally run through everything like a pack of locusts,” Schreiber said.

When they began their cupcake business three years ago, Barnett and Schreiber wanted to offer an array of treats equally as enticing. At first,

they included alcohol in all their cupcakes and marketed them only to adults.

Menu items had ’50s themed names, a nod to Schreiber’s love of that era. Even the greeting, “Hey, Sweet Cheeks!” has a vintage ring. They’ve since expanded their varieties to include child-friendly cupcakes, too.

“We probably do 90 percent without liquor and 10 percent with some kind of liquor,” Barnett said.

Barnett immediately acquired her sanitation license.

The women then began experimenting with flavor combinations and enlisting family and friends as taste-testers.

Certain cupcakes, – like the Johnny Cashew, with its whiskey-soaked, cashew-caramel filling – was an immediate hit.

The potica variety was not.

“The filling came out like a brick,” Schreiber said. “It wasn’t very good.”

In the meantime, Schreiber utilized her art background for the Hey, Sweet Cheeks! website and Facebook page.

She’ll sketch requests from customers, such as wedding cakes made from stacked cupcakes or cupcakes based on “Game of Thrones.”

They try hard to match a customer’s vision. For ideas approaching cake artistry, Barnett is happy to refer customers on, but that doesn’t happen too often, she said, mostly because of Schreiber’s creativity.

“That’s where she shines,” Barnett said.

Until recently, Barnett and Schreiber limited orders to a couple small ones during the week or a single large one on the weekend. They cited two reasons for doing so: Neither

Barnett recently retired from the Joliet City Center Partnership. Schreiber is a former administrative assistant. A recent offer to partner with Café and Play in Naperville means no more turning down orders, the women agreed.

South’s two-diamond rebid was fourth-suit game-forcing. When North bid four hearts, he showed a minimum opening bid. With extras he would have control-bid (cue-bid) four clubs. South signed off in six no-trump to protect his diamond holding, expecting North’s values to be in his long suits.

Declarer starts with 10 top tricks: two spades, five hearts, one diamond and two clubs. His plan should be to win four club tricks – but how?

The club nine in South’s hand makes getting four tricks a near-certainty. After winning the first trick with his spade ace, declarer should play a club to dummy’s ace, then return a low club and cover East’s eight with his nine.

Here, that ends South’s problems. But if his nine were to lose to the 10, the suit would be splitting 3-2 and the contract would be home. Finally, if East shows out on the second round of clubs, declarer wins with his king and leads back through West’s queen up to North’s jack.

Dear Abby: My 19-year-old son has been dating the daughter of one of my friends I’ll call “Mona.”

We didn’t set them up; they met at some parties. Last summer we discovered they were having sex because “Meghan” thought she was pregnant. Luckily, it turned out she wasn’t. They broke up but have gotten back together recently.

When I asked Mona if she was putting Meghan on birth control, Mona said that she wouldn’t because “that would be letting her know it’s OK to have sex.” I said, “Better safe than sorry!” and we left it at that.

I let my son use my car last weekend and found an opened box of emergency contraception on the floor. Because my son never answers his phone, I called Meghan and stressed to her that unprotected sex is irresponsible and that they aren’t ready for a baby. I warned her to take precautions and get on birth control, and

Red or brown urine should be checked out by doctor Dear Doctor K: I sometimes have dark, strong-smelling urine.

Should I be concerned?

Dear Reader: Given that this happens only occasionally, it probably is not something to worry about. But before reassuring you, I would need answers to some questions: • By dark, do you mean dark yellow? Or is your urine brown or red?

If your urine is just a dark yellow color at times, especially when you don’t drink enough fluids, then you don’t need to worry. Dark yellow urine is a sign of dehydration. Your urine is dark because your kidneys are doing what they are supposed to do when you are dehydrated: conserving water by making less urine. If this is the case, drink more water – eight 8-ounce glasses each day.

Certain foods and medicines can change urine color and make it smell. Eating asparagus is a good example of a food that causes your urine to take on a distinct odor. Eating beets can turn your urine red and make you worry that you might have blood in your urine. (We doctors have manufactured a medical term for

There are times when a change in the color or smell of your urine warrants a visit to your doctor. For example, see your doctor if your urine is ever red (unless you’ve eaten beets in the past 24 to 48 hours) or brown.

This could be a sign of something serious, like a bladder, kidney, blood or liver problem.

• Does it hurt when you urinate? Do you have pain high up on one (or both) sides of your back, weakness, fatigue or fever?

If so, you should see your doctor. You could be having intermittent bacterial infections of your urinary tract. Usually, such infections don’t turn urine dark – unless they cause temporary bleeding – but they can. Urinary tract infections often cause pain when you urinate. Other symptoms include having to urinate often and feeling a pressure to urinate.

• Have the whites of your eyes turned yellow?

If so, you could be having liver trouble. When the liver is not working properly, increased amounts of a dark pigment (bilirubin) appear in the blood and in the urine. Your doctor can check your liver function with blood tests.

If you’re concerned, collect a fresh urine sample when you have dark urine. Any kind of container is OK. Bring the urine sample to the doctor within a few hours after collecting it. The doctor will be able to test the urine for blood cells (looking for both bleeding and infection).

The urine also can be tested to see if the kidneys are conserving water, as they do when you get dehydrated.

Finally, the urine can be tested for chemicals that turn the urine dark, such as bilirubin or myoglobin. To test for a bacterial infection, it’s best to provide a fresh urine sample collected in a sterile container at the doctor’s office.

Wife’s world collapses over husband’s affair Dr. Wallace: My world collapsed around me last year when one morning at breakfast my husband announced that he was in love with a co-worker and they had already set up an apartment together and he was going to be taking his things that day and filing for divorce.

I have only recently learned to cope with the situation, and I now have a job that will help us survive. This has been very difficult for my teenage son and daughter, but they are adjusting to the changes in our lives and have been totally supportive of me.

I remember reading your column some time ago when you had suggestions from a psychologist about how to help the children of a divorce survive this life-changing situation. Could you reprint the information?

– Nameless, Seattle, Wash.

Dear Nameless: After a bit of research, I found the column you requested.

Dr. Debra Huntly, a professor of psychology at Argosy University, says that children, regardless of their age, will have more difficulty adjusting after a divorce if there was, and still is, conflict between the parents. Dr. Huntly provides 10 tips from a child’s perspective on how a divorcing, or already divorced couple, can help ease their children’s pain during or after the event: 1. Don’t put me in the middle. If you need to talk to each other, please do it yourself.

2. Don’t make me take sides. You may not have a husband/wife anymore, but I still have a mom/dad. When pos-

sible, tell me something positive about my other parent.

3. Unless there is an abusive situation, allow me to have access to both parents.

4. The better you can get along with each other, the better I will be able to cope with the divorce.

5. Ask me how I’m doing and what I need.

Even though you are going through your own loss.

6. Try to keep everything else in my life the same, if possible. It is stressful enough to lose a parent to divorce, but even tougher to move to a different school, a new neighborhood, and a new home.

7. Remember that I am your child. Although you have gone through a divorce, my role is not to replace your spouse or be a friend. Continue to treat me as your child.

8. If you need to talk to somebody about what you are going through, find a friend or a therapist.

9. No matter what my age is, this is still a loss for me. I may show my grief in many different ways, including anger, depression, anxiety or acting-out behavior.

Please get me help if I am having difficulty.

10. I long for continuity, routine and tradition.

Although our family has changed, please maintain as many traditions and routines as possible.

To hike all 2,050 miles of the rough and immature Appalachian Trail in 1955, she hand-sewed a yard of denim to form a drawstring sack and filled it with Band-Aids, bouillon cubes, raisins and peanuts, Vienna Sausage, powdered milk, bobby pins, iodine, a Swiss Army knife, flashlight, mints and a pen and small notebook.

She knew what she needed because she spent nights in the woods ahead of time as part of her preparation.

A trend in hiking today is the adoption of a minimalist tact, more reliant on ingenuity, fitness and will than technical equipment and dehydrated soups.

“Grandma Gatewood’s Walk” by Ben Montgomery is a feat of reporting, storytelling and fine writing.

It’s a first-rate summer read that will be hard to forget because Gatewood is not likely to be easily forgotten.

Gatewood told no one, including her 11 grown children, of the plan she worked on for more than two years.

In fact, she had to abort her first attempt after getting lost in Maine. The following spring, girded by resolved, she set off again.

Her 17-pound sack, $200, a love of walking and sheer determination enabled the five-month solo trek from Georgia to the summit of Mount Katahdin in Maine.

At the time, she was a hale 67 years old and finally rid of a violent and physically abusive husband.

She slung the sack over her shoulder, tied on her first of seven pairs of canvas Keds and set forth. She ignored naysayers, ageists and calamity.

What Grandma Gatewood, as she came to be known, didn’t bring with her is another marvel. No

No sleeping bag. No heavy coat, gloves or bug dope, no cleats for the icy rock slopes and hardly any food at all. She lost 30 pounds, injured a knee and broke her glasses, finishing the hike nearly blind.

Friendly and hopeful, she knocked on doors or made her bed where she could using rocks she heated in the fire to keep her warm, leaves and planks of wood. She was one of the very first thru-hikers. The trail was poorly marked, causing her to walk miles out of her way. And it was barely cleared despite claims to the contrary.

throughway that now draws hundreds of hikers from around the world every year.

Journalist Ben Montgomery’s account of this 5-foot-2 inspiration is remarkably thorough. The rich and abundant detail that demonstrates the pathos, irony

and joys in Gatewood’s life makes this a classic page-turner.

Montgomery interviewed Gatewood’s four surviving children, read her journals, spoke with other hikers and walked in her footsteps.

And, like “Wild,” Cheryl Strayed’s account of her fraught Pacific Crest Trail solo hike, he uses Gatewood’s own words to help tell the dramatic story.

Gatewood became a national celebrity, hounded by reporters and interviewed numerous times for newspapers, magazines and on television. Groucho Marx even had her on his show.

She was always game, pleasant and accommodating.

Despite the attention and her celebrity, Gatewood retained her secrets. And she was good at it. Part of Montgomery’s hardest work was to attempt to get into her head and figure out why she put herself through the ordeals she endured. She had a slew of answers for reporters, but none of them quite says it all.

One of the reasons the book stays with you long after you read the last few delicious pages is that you, too, spend time thinking about this remarkable, determined woman who was as much like Thoreau as she was the Old Woman in the Shoe.

Montgomery has secrets, too. This book takes an amazing turn in the final 50 or 60 pages. As much as I’d like to let readers in on the secret, I want to honor Montgomery’s tactics and decisions.

If you know what I know, you would go to your nearest bookstore and demand the book now. Gatewood is an environmental hero for the ages.

Her love of walking, of nature and solitude joins with Thoreau, John Muir, Wordsworth and Dickens, among others, to extol the essentials of a good and true humanity.

BUILDING INSPECTORS The City of Crest Hill is seeking to fill the position of one full-time or two part-time Building Inspectors with a salary range of $27.88 to $36.06 per hour. This is responsible administrative and investigative work in the inspection of all city commercial, industrial, and residential properties performed to secure and maintain compliance with zoning, property maintenance and building codes. An employee in this class is involved in the inspection of buildings in the course of construction, alteration or repair to determine whether plans, workmanship, and materials conform with all existing code requirements. This employee will interact with contractors, developers and/or the public regarding code compliance issues and inspection requirements. The inspector will report to the Community Development Director. The successful candidate/candidates will have a minimum of five (5) years' experience in building construction, building trade and/or inspections, minimum high school graduate with a thorough knowledge of building and remodeling type of construction work. No certificate or license is required. However, ICC Certifications are a plus and a Certified Building Official (CBO) is strongly desired.

Ability to interpret and apply a wide variety of complex building codes, City ordinances, zoning rules and other regulations. Must be skilled in dealing with the public in a friendly, courteous and knowledgeable manner. Must possess a valid driver's license.
