JOLIET – Authorities are investigating a robbery reported Monday at First Midwest Bank Branch in Joliet.

The branch, located at 2801 Jefferson St. across from Memorial Stadium, was robbed about noon Monday, according to James Roolf, president of the Joliet Banking Center at First Midwest Bank.

No clients or employees were hurt during the robbery, Roolf said.

Joliet police and FBI agents are investigating the incident.

It was not immediately known if the suspect was armed.

An FBI spokeswoman said the suspect was a black male wearing a hat and carrying a bag. She said late Monday afternoon that the robbery investigation was still continuing.

Early Monday afternoon, about four Joliet police cars and a crime scene unit vehicle were parked at the bank entrance. Customers who tried to enter the building were turned

away by Joliet police investigating the scene.

The bank had signs posted on the front entrance that it was closed because of emergency.

Property tax freeze remains an issue for Rauner, Illinois lawmakers

By LAUREN LEONE–CROSS lleonecross@shawmedia.com When considering Gov. Bruce Rauner’s five must-have Turnaround Agenda items, a two-year property tax freeze for homeowners seems to be garnering the most attention.

After all, the local property tax is the most hated in the U.S., according to Tax Foundation, a nonpartisan tax research group. And, Illinois ranks No. 2 in the U.S. for its high property taxes behind only New Jersey.

Last week, a new proposal emerged in the Illinois Senate. Senate Bill 316 calls for a two-year property tax freeze, coupled with changes to the state’s education funding formula that many believe to be unfair to poorer school districts. It also requires the state to pay employer costs for Chicago teacher pensions.

The bill passed out of an Illinois Senate committee on a 10-5 vote last week. State Sen. Pat McGuire said the legislation sunsets the current state’s General State Aid formula in June 2017 – a move that could place pressure on lawmakers

to reach a new agreed-upon funding formula sooner rather than later.

But would a property tax freeze do more harm than good? Depends on who you ask.

Terry Kernc, president of the Will County Government League and mayor for the village of Diamond, said a freeze would “tie municipalities’ hands,” she said.

“Some communities have some reserves in the bank. Others are just barely making it.

Any type of property tax freeze for a community that’s struggling could be extremely detrimental to them,” Kernc said.

The Will County Government League supports local decision-making, said Jim Holland, mayor for the village of Frankfort and past president of the WCGL. Such a freeze would be detrimental to taxing districts, he said.

“Many special taxing districts ... the parks, the libraries, the schools … are almost totally dependent on property taxes,” Holland said. “If anything, the state Legislature needs to offer a substitute for that revenue.”

But property tax relief is a

must, said Will County Board member Steve Balich, R-Homer Glen.

As a well-known tea party member, Balich said he’s circulating his own petition in Homer Glen for a non-binding ballot referendum. It asks voters whether each taxing body should be required to seek voter approval for any increases.

“People hate property taxes,” Balich said. “I hear people all the time say, ‘Why would I want to buy this house that costs all this money … to live here?’ They’d rather live somewhere else … and that somewhere else is usually out of state.”

Since Rauner took office earlier this year, Illinois House lawmakers have taken up various property tax freeze bills, only to watch them fail with Republican lawmakers saying they chose not to vote on those because they left out key components sought by Rauner.

The Republican governor has repeatedly said he would only vote for a freeze if the proposal was paired with restrictions to municipal collective bargaining and public works contracting.

LOCAL BRIEF Fatal accident reported on I-80 in Joliet

JOLIET – An Iowa man was killed in a head-on collision Monday afternoon on Interstate 80 in Joliet.

Illinois State Police Master Sgt. R.A. Caves said at 4:11 p.m. a vehicle traveling west crossed over into the eastbound lanes just east of Briggs Street and struck two other vehicles.

The man who was driving the vehicle that crossed into oncoming traffic died. David Ruiz Zenteno, 31, of Des Moines, Iowa, was pronounced dead at 5:30 p.m. Monday, according to the Will County Coroner’s Office.

Caves said eastbound 80 was closed until shortly after 7:30 p.m. Westbound traffic was also backed up for a significant distance approaching the crash. An autopsy for Zenteno is scheduled for Tuesday, according to the coroner’s office.

ISP continue to investigate the crash.

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com SHOREWOOD – A longtime undeveloped 18-acre parcel of real estate on the corner of River Road and Route 52 in Shorewood has pitted nearby residents against village officials, land developers and the business owner.

The proposed Lenny’s Gas & Wash gas station project was suggested as an anchor that would spark more development and business along Route 52 and the Towne Center area.

But after being recommended June 3 by the planning and zoning board, residents in the neighborhoods around the development started protesting the project, contending the station would increase traffic and decrease safety.

“You’re placing a gas station right in the middle of the neighborhoods,” said Lori Lakota, a resident of the Hunt Club subdivision that borders the site of the porposed development.

The protests led to a heated Village Board meeting June 23, where more than 20 Shorewood residents spoke about the negative impact they feel a gas station would have on the nearby communities. Mayor Rick Chapman tabled the vote until the July 14 meeting.

Lenny McEnery, the owner of the prospective business who has gas stations with the same name in Mokena and Kankakee, has been working for about six months with Chapman, other village officials and owners of the property on a site plan that would fit with the village.

He didn’t think it would become one of the most controversial projects in the history of the village.

Mike Rose, one of the partners who owns the property, said the site was bought in 2002. It was annexed and zoned a B-3 General Commercial District in 1991.

“When we did that, we

thought we would have it fully developed in three, four, five years,” Rose said.

But a deal never happened.

There was some hope with a Walgreens store, but that project went to a similar location in Plainfield, Rose said.

An initial concept plan for the project was presented to the village’s Planning and Zoning Commission in February. The plan changed before it was brought to the commission again June 3.

According to the most updated version of the plans, the car wash would include 18 vacuuming spaces and stacking for six cars at the car wash.

A 4,800-square-foot convenience store would include space for a drive-thru vendor and parking for 44 cars. The fuel canopy would include seven full-service pump stations and one diesel pump station.

City urged to buy Evergreen Terrace

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – A coalition of neighborhood groups on Monday urged the Joliet City Council to move ahead with the acquisition of Evergreen Terrace and questioned the motive behind redevelopment plans now being drawn up.

The statement from the Unity Community Development Corp. Neighborhood Leadership Council comes as the council prepares to examine plans said to outline costs as much as $70 million in city money to redevelop the low-income housing complex.

The City Council must de-

cide whether to move forward and acquire the 356-apartment complex after winning a 10-year condemnation case against the owners.

“Reversing course, walking away, deciding that it’s just too expensive is not an option if your goal is to improve Joliet,” said Amy Sanchez, president of the leadership council.

The council is tentatively scheduled to meet July 27 to hear redevelopment plans for Evergreen Terrace. Mayor Bob O’Dekirk recently said that he has asked the city’s consultant to come up with more alternatives after one plan showed the project costing $70 million.

“We fear that the true pur-

pose of this particular plan is to provide you with an excuse to walk away from the purchase of Evergeen Terrace and leave it in the hands of its current owners,” Sanchez said to the council. “We hope we are wrong.”

O’Dekirk challenged Sanchez’s comment that the plans being developed for the July meeting are “forced.”

“Several of us on the council have been calling for a plan for several years,” he said. “I don’t think trying to get a plan in place before we decide to spend millions of dollars is a forced plan.”

O’Dekirk also said past statements by city officials that Evergreen Terrace could be

redeveloped without spending city tax dollars “was a lie when they said it. It’s a lie today. It’s going to cost money.”

The group also presented a statement from the grandson of the late Rev. Isaac Singleton Sr., a Joliet pastor and civil rights leader who criticized Evergreen Terrace because it crowded low-income people into one area.

The statement from Damond Singleton called on the city to remove the current Evergreen Terrace management and find adequate housing for the people who live there.

I-55 and I-80 crossroads

The council on Tuesday will

vote whether to end a development agreement with O&M Properties, the company that at one time planned a lifestyle mall on a 264-acre site at Interstates 55 and 80.

City Manager Jim Hock said Culliman Properties wants the development agreement ended so it can complete an acquisition of the site on Wednesday.

The Culliman acquisition follows another plan from Hillwood Investment Properties to develop the site primarily for warehouse space. O’Dekirk said Culliman does not have a plan for the site yet, but, “We made it clear that it would not pass the council as a logistics plan.”

Trolley Barn restoration receives $237,194 TIF grant

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – Village trustees Monday approved the site plan review and $237,194 facade grant through tax-increment financing funds for a new use of the old Plainfield Trolley Barn.

Work on the Trolley Barn, which was supported by trustees during a Committee of the Whole meeting April 13, will cost an estimated $474,388.

The tax-increment financing, or TIF, facade grant would amount to half the cost.

As part of the Downtown Plainfield TIF District, the village’s facade grant program allows owners of properties in the district to get financial assistance to restore the faces of their buildings.

As a matter of policy, the village doesn’t allow facade grants of more than $150,000 through TIF funds, Village Planner Michael Garrigan said.

But trustees have bent that rule before and approved grants for more than $200,000 for two restoration projects

thought of as main components of Downtown Plainfield: the Masonic Lodge at 24050 W. Lockport St. and the Opera House at 24027 W. Lockport St. “We think [the Trolley Barn] has the significance really being a commercial anchor of the western edge of downtown,” Garrigan said.

Director of Management Services Traci Pleckham said the village has enough reserves in its TIF funds, about $1 million, to fund the grant.

The village also has budgeted for $250,000 in facade improvements based on information known at the time of budget planning, Pleckham said.

Chicago-based Sheffield Safety and Loss Control is redeveloping the Trolley Barn, located at 24216 W. Lockport St. in Downtown Plainfield, for office purposes.

Along with an in-house training center, warehouse and loading dock for the company, it also creates space for another commercial user.

It ceased operation in 1924 and the property was used for storage and maintenance, undergoing several transformations through the 1960s.

While demolition of the western “Railoc” addition has already begun on the

19,230-square-foot property, design elements originally planned for the side of the building facing Route 126 are being scrapped because they encroach upon the state right of way.

The improvements included an additional entrance with a secondary handicap access.

The design elements would have needed Illinois Depart-

ment of Transportation approval, which wasn’t granted.

Garrigan said the village’s long-term plans are to make Route 126, or Main Street, a local road. That way, they can approve and make the modifications in the future. However, that would take cooperation from not just the state, but the federal level for funding, he said.

The vote approved an ordinance granting a Conditional Permitted Use permit to Greenhouse Group LLC to open a medical marijuana dispensary at the former Rockwell Inn. The council had previously postponed a vote on the request.

Kopczick granted Ted Ergo of Nettle Creek subdivision the opportunity to speak for five minutes before the council discussion on the dispensary location. Ergo prepared a PowerPoint presentation referencing crime and regulation in California, and encouraged council members to put the dispensary in a commercial location farther away from neighborhoods and children.

Mitch Kahn, CEO of Greenhouse Group, said in response that the California standards are vastly different than Illinois’, noting they vary city to city. Kahn said Illinois is a logical, methodical state in regard to regulation of granting medical marijuana licenses.

Kiwanis Club coming to Minooka, Channahon

By MIKE MALLORY mmallory@shawmedia.com MORRIS – A sixth Kiwanis Club is coming to Division 24 of Kiwanis International, which serves Grundy and LaSalle counties.

Don McKinney, superintendent and principal at Nettle Creek School District 24, and lieutenant governor of Division 24 for the Illinois Eastern Iowa District of Kiwanis International, announced Wednesday plans for a new club that will serve the Minooka and Channahon communities.

Kiwanis International is celebrating its 100th anniversary and the Chanooka Kiwanis Club will be the first new Kiwanis Club in Division 24 in decades, according to a news release from the organization.

It will join the clubs in Morris, LaSalle-Peru, Ottawa, Streator and Mendota already in Division 24.

The organizational meeting for Chanooka Kiwanis Club is set for 6 p.m. July 23 at Chapin’s East in Minooka. About 20 people have expressed an interest in being charter members, but McKinney said more are need-

Former Minooka Community Consolidated School District 201 Superintendent Al Gegenheimer, who retired June 5, said he’s a charter member of the Shorewood Kiwanis Club, although he’s lived in Minooka for more than 40 years.

Gegenheimer said with the growth of Minooka and Channahon, there’s many new people who want to get involved in the community.

“We’re only as good as

our next generation,” Gegenheimer said. “We have nothing but great kids in the area, just as good now as when I started in education years ago.”

Gegenheimer said he foresees Chanooka Kiwanis Club working to provide some help for needy families and possibly establishing a scholarship for area high school students.

McKinney said one thing he sees the club doing is taking part in the Kiwanis literacy program, where members visit schools to read to students four times a year.

Prospective members should be community- and service-minded, giving and caring, Gegenheimer said.

“It’s not about what the club does for a member, it’s about the public service you offer as a member,” he said. “Generally, the more you give, the better you feel.”

Minooka Mayor Pat Brennan said he’s in support of Kiwanis Clubs because they help children and the community grow.

“I’ll talk to them and help them as much as I can,” Brennan said. “We’ll help in whatever way we can.”

Plainfield police: Air guns being used by kids almost mistaken for weapons

By VIKAAS SHANKER vshanker@shawmedia.com PLAINFIELD – What was just some kids playing Friday with Airsoft guns in Plainfield afternoon could have turned into a tragedy.

Plainfield police received calls of people running near a residential area around the intersection of Route 59 and Feeney Drive about 2 p.m. Friday, Police Chief John Konopek said.

Konopek said the split-second decision by an officer to give a warning to a potential threat instead of shooting may have saved lives. “[Officers] came very close to shooting the kid,” Konopek said.

When the officers arrived, two of them made contact with two of the kids. While they were trying to figure out if the guns were real or not, another kid started to “tactically approach” the officers at a different angle.

Konopek said officers are trained in firearms and decision making. But there are no rules as to when to give a warning or shoot.

The incident led to the police department issuing a statement on its Facebook page Monday quizzing the public to identify if the weapons were real by their photos.

Konopek said it was important for parents to make sure Airsoft guns have some indication they aren’t real weapons.

Will County Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Bailey said he stopped a silver LeSabre occupied by Pruitte and two other men near Cass and Collins streets about a half-hour after Egner was slain. Bailey testified Pruitte and the driver were cooperative and their backseat passenger appeared intoxicated.

The deputy said he patted down the three men before searching the Buick, but did not find any weapons. When arrested by Gruber, Pruitte allegedly said he’d just found the gun on Cagwin Avenue.

Autopsy confirms girl drowned in pool

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com MOKENA – An autopsy showed a 3-year-old Tinley Park girl drowned Saturday in a swimming pool while at an Independence Day celebration with her family.

Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said an autopsy performed Monday

showed Lamees Mohammed drowned. She was discovered about 9 p.m. in an inground pool at a residence in the 19300 block of Lancaster Drive in Mokena.

Mokena Police Chief Steven Vaccaro said in a statement the child had been attending a Fourth of July gathering with her family at the residence.

JOLIET – The killer returned to the scene of the crime, prosecutors said.

Less than 24 hours after Timothy Egner was found Aug. 1, 2012, shot to death outside the Wendy’s at 104 N. Center St. in Joliet, police encountered Daeviontae D. Pruitte standing in the middle of that block, officer T.J. Gruber testified Monday.

According to Gruber, Pruitte ran when the Daeviontae officer got out D. Pruitte of his car and “tossed a handgun to the ground” before Gruber caught him in the 400 block of Campbell Street.

Lab tests later showed the gray Taurus .380 semi-automatic was one of the guns allegedly used to kill Egner.

Pruitte, 21, was charged with murder and began a bench trial Monday before Judge Carla Alessio Policandriotes.

Egner, 54, had come from

his job as a security guard at a casino in Aurora to pick up Dominique Woods, a family friend who was getting off work about 2:30 a.m. Woods said she saw Egner’s green Acura park near the east side doors about 20 minutes earlier, but did not notice anything suspicious until she got in the car.

“I noticed he was laid back ... and his eyes were closed.

I thought he was asleep. I was going to wake him up so I could drive home, but I checked his pulse,” Woods said. “The police showed up and took me out [of the car].

I told them ‘I think he had a heart attack.’ ” Egner had bullets in his torso and aorta, evidence technician Eric Stanley testified. An anonymous passer-by had called 911 to say he’d been farther down the block and saw a “couple guys just shooting the guys [sic] inside the car,” according to a recording played in court.

A 5- to 6-foot berm would be constructed with a fence at the south property line to provide a barrier to residents in the Hunt Club.

The gas station would be opened 24 hours and could be granted a liquor license.

The gas station and car wash development is expected to provide $411,000 in sales tax revenue to the village, Rose said, although residents have suggested much of this would be taken from existing gas stations in Shorewood.

Protest and petitions

Nearby residents have been protesting the development several different ways.

On June 7, dozens of residents took turns picketing the propose project at the corner of River Road and Route 52.

Efforts to urge trustees to vote no on the project are being loosely organized on a Facebook group called “Stop Lenny’s Gas and Wash - Shorewood IL.” The group had 181 members as of Monday afternoon. The group launched a Change.org petition against the project, which has reached 183 signatures as of Monday afternoon.

A reactionary Facebook page called “Say YES to Len-

ny’s Gas And Wash - Shorewood” was created, containing messages of support for the project. The group had 218 members as of Monday afternoon, although many of those members are listed on Facebook as living in other municipalities.

Opponents also put up a banner Thursday at a Hunt Club home that borders River Road encouraging people to attend the July 14 board meeting. However, Lakota said the sign was cut down by someone between 1 and 2 p.m.

Amy Conant, who lives in the Towne Center neighborhood, said she was concerned about the 24-hour open policy and the impact the gas station could have to pedestrian and bike paths.

He was certified in welding at Millcreek Junior College while a senior in high school and worked actively in steel fabrication and welding since graduation. Aidan was also an avid music fan, guitar player and talented rapper. He played baseball his entire life and enjoyed umpiring.

In recent years, Shavitz lived in a cluttered house with no running water. A converted turkey coop that used to be his home remained on his property. He liked passing the time by watching wildlife.

PORTLAND, Maine – The reclusive beekeeper who co-founded Burt’s Bees, and whose face and wild beard appeared on labels for the natural cosmetics, died on Sunday. Burt Shavitz was 80.

A spokeswoman for Burt’s Bees said in an emailed statement Shavtiz died of respiratory complications in Bangor, Maine, surrounded by family and friends.

Shavitz was a hippie making a living by selling honey when his life was altered by a chance encounter with a hitchhiking Roxanne Quimby.

She was a single mother and a back-to-the-lander who impressed Shavitz with her ingenuity and self-sufficiency.

In the 1980s she began making products from his beeswax, and they became partners.

The business partnership

ended after Quimby moved the company to North Carolina in 1994. The company continued to expand, but Shavitz moved back to Maine. He has said he was forced out after having an affair with an employee. In 2007, Clorox purchased Burt’s Bees for $925 million.

“Burt was an enigma; my mentor and my muse. I am deeply saddened,” Quimby told The Associated Press in an email.

Shavitz received an undisclosed settlement – and 37 acres in a remote corner of Maine. He also continued to make appearances on behalf of the company.

“What I have in this situation is no regret,” he said last year while sitting in a rocking chair in his home in Parkman. “The bottom line is she’s got her world and I’ve got mine, and we let it go at that.”

CHICAGO – Former U.S. Rep. Mel Reynolds failed to appear for his arraignment Monday on federal tax charges, and his lawyer told reporters the Illinois Democrat couldn’t return from an overseas trip in time because of a daughter’s health problems.

Failing to show up for a scheduled arraignment in federal court is rare, but there was no indication from prosecutors or the judge they suspect anything was amiss in the 63-year-old’s surprise absence.

The sides gathered for the hearing in a U.S. district courtroom in Chicago, but it never formally convened. An aide to U.S. Magistrate Judge Maria Judge Valdez said the arraignment would be reset for July 30.

Defense attorney Theodore Poulos told reporters afterward his client traveled abroad in early June – weeks before the unveiling of the indictment June 26.

Deadly weekend in Chicago highlights city’s gang warfare

CHICAGO – A 7-year-old boy who was one of seven people shot to death in Chicago over the holiday weekend was the son of a gang leader with a lengthy arrest record, and police said the man’s refusal to cooperate with detectives highlights the city’s ongoing challenge to curb gang-related violence.

During the July 4th weekend, 48 people were wounded by gunfire in 34 separate incidents in Chicago. Seven homicides also were reported during the same period last year, and this year’s total in the nation’s third-largest city nearly matched the combined numbers for New York (one), Los Angeles (three) and Houston (five) – the other cities that rank in the top four in population.

Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy has repeatedly lamented that the lack of tough gun laws in Illinois has made the streets that much more dangerous because of the quickness with which people arrested on gun charges are back on the street.

Fairdale tornado victim to be buried at Arlington

FAIRDALE – Family members said a woman who died in the tornado that struck the northern Illinois town of Fairdale earlier this year will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Mark Schnorenberg, who is Jackie Klosa’s brother-in-law and executor of her estate, told The Daily Chronicle her family has secured arrangements to bury her at the Arlington, Virginia, cemetery next to her husband, Arthur, who was in the U.S. Air Force and died in 2004.

Klosa died in the April 9 tornado that struck Fairdale. Another woman, Geraldine Schultz, also died in the tornado.

Schnorenberg said Klosa will be buried at 10 a.m. Aug. 17 with a Methodist ceremony and graveside service.

Iran pushes for end to arms embargo in new nuke deal

By GEORGE JAHN The Associated Press VIENNA – A day before the new deadline for a nuclear accord, Iran pushed Monday for an end to the U.N. arms embargo on the country – a parallel deal the United States opposes as it seeks to limit Tehran’s Mideast power and influence.

Speaking on the eve of an already-extended target date for a complete agreement, a senior Iranian official and a U.S. official said Iran and the six world powers it is negotiating with also are working on a U.N. resolution that would endorse any future nuclear deal.

Lifting the arms embargo would be separate from a long-term accord that foresees limits on Iran’s nuclear programs in exchange for relief from crippling economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic. But Iran also sees existing U.N. resolutions affecting Iran’s nuclear program and the accompanying sanctions as unjust and illegal. It has insisted that those resolutions be lifted since the start of international negotiations nearly a decade ago to limit its nuclear-arms making capability.

After world powers and Iran reached a framework

pact in April, the U.S. said “important restrictions on conventional arms and ballistic missiles” would be incorporated in any new U.N. guidelines for Iran. It also said “a new U.N. Security Council resolution ... will endorse” any deal.

Negotiators and some foreign ministers of the six world powers plus Iran gathered in Vienna to complete a comprehensive nuclear deal by June 30. When they couldn’t reach agreement by then, they agreed to extend the deadline to July 7. But many core issues remain, and an announcement Tuesday was unlikely.

While the discussions have been focused on uranium stockpiles and the timing for lifting economic sanctions, Iran’s longstanding desire to have the arms embargo lifted at the signing of a deal is another wrinkle thrown into the mix.

Russia and China have expressed support for lifting the embargo, which was imposed in 2007 as part of a series of penalties over Iran’s nuclear program.

But the U.S. doesn’t want the arms ban ended because it could allow Tehran to expand its military assistance for Syrian President Bashar Assad’s embattled govern-

ment, for the Houthi rebels in Yemen and for Hezbollah in Lebanon. It also would increase already strong opposition to the deal in Congress and in Israel.

Lifting the embargo is one of the important issues being discussed, the Iranian official said. “There should not be any place for the arms embargo.”

The Iranian official briefed reporters on the condition that he not be named.

The U.S. official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official wasn’t authorized to discuss the negotiations publicly.

Iran wants to have a hand in shaping any Security Council resolution endorsing a comprehensive nuclear deal, the Iranian official added. He offered no details, but said Iran is interested in wording that shifts the critical tone of previous resolutions passed over Tehran’s nuclear program.

The Iranian official spoke of good progress on some issues. But at the same time, he said some disputes may have to be resolved by the foreign ministers of Iran, the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany.

All seven were either in Vienna by Monday or planned to arrive during the day.

To the Editor: My vision for change to make our country more perfect seems to be quite different from Mr. O’Donnell (“Guest View: America needs culture change” in Friday’s Opinion page).

In Engel v. Vitale (1962), the Supreme Court ruled it unconstitutional for state officials to compose an official school prayer. Prayer is a private matter.

Teaching prayer is the job of a student’s religious leader, not for a public official. Today, Illinois requires a moment of reflection in public schools. No student is forbidden from saying a silent prayer.

Many people view Roe vs. Wade as a good step to keep government out of a patient-doctor relationship. It is slanted for anyone to call a fetus a “baby.” It even is more radical to think we need laws to govern sperm movement by outlawing forms of birth control.

When the Supreme Court ruled the Defense of

Marriage Act unconstitutional, it was more about tax law than any Bible wording. In June, the court ruled couples considered married in one state could not be “unmarried” by another state. The court found Edith Windsor is not required to pay $353,052 in estate taxes when her spouse died, because they were legally married.

The cultural change I pray for is “liberty and justice for all.” In the last 40 years, crime rates have remained stable, but the number of incarcerated has risen 600 percent. American wages in “buying” dollars have decreased significantly. We gave a $5 trillion tax cut to the super wealthy while increasing the debt. Then they say we need to cut Social Security and Medicare to pay for the new debt.

In 40 years, we have seen greed change from a vice to a virtue. Now this is something Jesus would find sinful.

Rauner diverting blame for state’s budget woes Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner is proving to be quite adept at skirting responsibility for the current statehouse impasse and impending government shutdown.

He relentlessly has painted himself as the good guy, even to the point of blatantly abandoning his previous stances.

For instance, Rauner righteously has slammed the Democrats’ “unconstitutional” unbalanced budget, even though his own proposed budget also was billions of dollars out of balance.

Rauner trashed that Democratic budget even after he signed the part that funded schools, thereby ensuring he avoided blame if schools didn’t open on time.

Rauner warned in April the state had no money to bail out Chicago, then offered $200 million a year in “found money” for the Chicago Public Schools to keep it from going belly up.

The same man who often refers to the state employee union AFSCME as “AFSCAMMY,” and who told the Chicago Tribune editorial board the

crisis of a state fiscal meltdown “creates opportunity” to get his nonbudget issues passed, pledged last week to work arm in arm with the unions to make sure those poor state workers got their paychecks, even though the lack of a budget means there is no legal appropriation to do so.

He’s a clever dude, that one.

He’ll say just about anything to shift the focus off him and onto the Democrats.

Rauner said last week via an email to state workers he hadn’t heard any response to his newly proposed compromises on his nonbudget demands, which he wants resolved before he’ll even talk about the budget. But Senate President John Cullerton had been working with him on workers’ comp, property taxes and other issues, and many of Rauner’s “new” compromises weren’t new at all.

The Democrats have responded by pushing a proposal they hope will help give them an edge on the governor. The Senate Democrats last week used their large veto-proof majority to pass a bill to fund a

VIEWS Rich Miller few “essential” state operations for one month, at a cost of $2.26 billion.

The legislation includes funding for things such as sex offender GPS tracking, community care programs for the elderly, the Illinois Emergency Management Agency’s monitoring of nuclear sites and its natural disaster response, along with operational funding for veterans’ homes, the Illinois State Police, the Illinois School for the Deaf, the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired, the Illinois National Guard and DCFS group homes, foster homes and protective services, That’s not an easy bill to vote against. The TV ads write themselves. But zero Republicans voted for it.

The House Democrats, who have a smaller majority than their Senate counterparts, couldn’t pass the bill on their

own because they didn’t have all their members in the chamber last week, but they still got Republicans on record as opposing it.

House Speaker Michael Madigan told reporters he’d heard at least two House Republicans were willing to vote to keep the government from totally shutting down.

But the House GOP leadership said the governor had placed a very large “brick” on the bill, and the Republicans complied with his wishes, as they pretty much always have since Rauner’s inauguration.

That constant compliance is starting to have a price.

Rauner met with the House Republican Caucus last week to thank them for sticking with him throughout the spring session and to ask them for more support during the overtime session.

Rauner thanked them for voting “present” at his request on controversial bills that could get them in hot water with constituents. He was reminded politely, however, they actually voted “no” on quite a

few bills, including the education funding bill the governor wound up signing into law.

Nobody enjoys getting the rug pulled out from under them, so House Republicans have a right to be ticked off.

Some believe the Democrats hope to drive so many wedges between legislative Republicans and Rauner that the legislators eventually will rise up and demand a resolution.

A revolt from below is highly unlikely, however. Rauner is Illinois’ first Republican governor in a dozen years, so Republican lawmakers truly want to help him succeed.

Plus, the governor is sitting on an unlimited supply of campaign money, and they want that cash for next year’s elections – and they don’t want any of it used against them.

Even so, it wouldn’t hurt if the more reasonable GOP lawmakers finally find the courage to suggest a way out of this mess.

Brown, Schumacher in a tight battle

cherron@shawmedia.com The battle for the NHRA’s Top Fuel championship can’t get much closer than it’s been throughout the season between Antron Brown and Tony Schumacher.

Leadership in the marquee event has shifted a few times this season between 2012 champion Brown and defending champion and eight-time winner Schumacher.

Although Schumacher has been ahead in points only twice since the start of the season, he’s been able to narrow a 118-point gap (751-633) after the Toyota Summernationals on June 7 at Englishtown, New Jersey, to only a 925-905 margin as the pair prepares for this weekend’s Lucas Oil Route 66 Nationals at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet.

Heading into last weekend’s Summit Racing Equipment Nationals at Norwalk, Ohio, Brown led, 826-824, but he increased his advantage after beating Schumacher in the semifinals before falling in the finals to Doug Kalitta, who moved to third in the points at 791, which is 134 behind Brown.

Midway through the 24race calender, competitors are beginning to feel the heat of capturing a top-10 placement through the 18-race regular season. The top 10 will move on to the six-race playoffs, the Countdown to the Championship.

Brown has won titles at Charlotte (March 29), Atlanta (May 17) and Englishtown (June 7), while Schumacher owns wins at Phoenix (Feb. 22) and Epping, New Hampshire (June 14). Including last weekend’s meeting, the two have squared off four times this season, with each driver claiming two wins.

Schumacher has won four titles at Route 66 Raceway, with his last coming in 2013.

The all-time wins leader in Top Fuel races is tied with Kenny Bernstein for the most wins at the track in his division.

Brown won last year’s race, his second at Route 66 in Top Fuel.

among the leaders in Top Fuel, the Funny Car division has the biggest gap between first and second places.

Matt Hagan, who picked up his first win of 2014 at Route 66 en route to capturing the world championship, owns a 120-point lead over Ron Capps

(932-812) for the top spot in Funny Cars. The two-time champion in the division has won three races in Joliet. He’s won four times this season, with his most recent victory coming June 21 at Bristol, Tennessee.

Beckman moved past Del Worsham, 781-779, for third place in Funny Cars. Beckman, who won the 2012 world title, didn’t win any races in 2013 and 2014, but already has claimed three victories this season.

opened up a 1,065-1,005 lead for top honors in Pro Stock over defending champion Erica Enders. Anderson, a four-time champion who last won the title in 2010, has won four races this season. Jason Line is third with 900 points.

Vincent Nobile, who won last year’s Pro Stock race at Route 66, is one of the individuals who is battling to make the top-10 cut. He ranks ninth in his division.

Things are still pretty wide open in the Pro Stock Motorcycle division, where Eddie Krawiec leads Karen Stoffer, 395-350, for first place, while Andrew Hines has a 340-322 edge over Hector Arana Jr. for third.

Krawiec, a three-time world champion, last won a title in 2012, while Hines claimed his fourth championship last season – his first since 2006. In last year’s race at Route 66, Arana Jr. defeated his dad, Hector Arana, for the title.

Last week at Norwalk, Stoffer won for the second time this year when she beat Angelle Sampey in only the third Pro final round featuring two female competitors.

Just ask the Minooka 12U Mudslingers after they beat the Somonauk RedHawks, 155, on Sunday to win the championship of the Channahon Fireworks Tournament.

Minooka, which earned a berth in the title game with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Whiteford in the semifinals earlier in the day, struck out only three times in its four innings at bat.

And that’s part of the plan, co-coach Brent Barnes said.

“We’ve been working on our hitting,” Barnes said.

“The top seven or so in our lineup can really crush the ball. We’ve been working on having the guys at the bottom put the ball in play so we can turn the lineup back over to the top, and they did a good job of that.

“We have some speedsters

all up and down the order, so if they just put it in play, there’s a good chance they will get on.

And, once we’re on base, we keep running.”

Minooka saw Somonauk take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, but that didn’t last long.

The Mudslingers got five hits and stole 10 bases in the bottom of the first en route to eight runs.

Jake Formenti, who pitched the first three innings, led off with a single up the middle, then stole second and third.

Catcher Bryce Barnes then walked and stole second before Jonathon Forneris singled to right to score Formenti and move Barnes to third. A steal of second by Forneris put runners on second and third, and Brandon Moore beat out an infield hit to second, scoring Barnes.

“It’s my first year with the team, and it’s been fun,” said Stanford, who had two hits and two RBIs despite an injured calf. “What I like the most about it is the players. I am friends with everyone.”

“I’ve been trying to stay focused when I am hitting,” said Forneris, who shut out Whiteford in the semifinals. “That, and keeping my feet planted.

I felt good pitching in the first game. I was hitting my spots and got a lot of strikeouts.”

“We played good ball all weekend,” Barnes said. “We started a little slow early in the week, but we really got rolling this weekend.

“We played good defense, too, and we have been working hard on that. I tell them that defense wins games, and that showed in this tournament. We didn’t give teams very many extra bases.”

JOLIET – Three Joliet Slammers have been selected to play for the West Division in the Frontier League AllStar game, which will take place July 15 at Boomers Stadium in Schaumburg.

Catcher Jack Cleary will join pitchers Kevin McNorton and Navery Moore in representing the team. Cleary is batting .262 with 20 RBIs, while pacing the team with a .349 batting average with runners in scoring position.

McNorton has been strong as both a starter and a reliever, with a 1.98 ERA in 36.1 innings pitched to go along with a 3-2 record. He also has struck out 33 and walked only five.

Moore is one of the league leaders in saves (eight) and has a 1.31 ERA in 20.2 innings pitched with a 2:1 strikeout-towalk ratio.

By JOHN JACKSON The Associated Press CHICAGO – Chris Sale’s bid for a record strikeout streak ended, but he pitched a six-hitter Monday night that led the White Sox past the Toronto Blue Jays, 4-2, in the fastest major league game in almost four years.

Sale (7-4) had struck out at least 10 batters in eight straight starts, matching the major league mark set by Pedro Martinez in 1999.

The Sox ace fanned six in a complete game Monday, outpitching former mentor Mark Buehrle (9-5), who also went the distance.

There were no walks in a game that took only 1 hour, 54 minutes. It was the speediest big league game since Tampa Bay and Kansas City took 1 hour, 53 minutes Aug. 9, 2011, STATS said.

All of the Sox’s runs were unearned. An error by shortstop Jose Reyes leading off the eighth helped the Sox score three times and overcome a 2-1 deficit.

Toronto’s Josh Donaldson and Chris Colabello hit solo homers.

Sale began the game pitching more like Buehrle, getting five outs on groundballs in the first two innings. In fact, Sale allowed a homer – a solo shot

to Colabello leading off the third inning – before recording his first strikeout when he got Devon Travis looking for the second out in the third.

The Blue Jays, the top-scoring team in the majors, were aggressive at the plate and didn’t work many deep counts, opting to put the ball in play before getting two strikes.

The Sox tied the score at 1 in the fourth inning with an assist from the Toronto defense.

Melky Cabrera singled with one out and advanced to third base when Avisail Garcia followed with another single.

Right fielder Jose Bautista decided to throw to first base behind Garcia, who didn’t take a particularly wide turn around the bag. The ball bounced away from Colabello at first base and rolled far enough away to allow Cabrera to score on Bautista’s first error of the season.

Donaldson hit his 20th homer in the sixth.

NEW YORK – Less than three months after making his major league debut, Cubs third baseman Kris Bryant is an All-Star, one of two rookies selected along with Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Joc Pederson.

But there was no room on the roster for Alex Rodriguez, enjoying a renaissance in his return to the New York Yankees following a season-long drug suspension.

Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal also was a first-time selection Monday for the July 14 game in Cincinnati.

Grandal became the third All-Star this year who served a drug-related suspension following MLB’s investigation of the Biogenesis of America clinic. Seattle slugger Nelson Cruz and St. Louis shortstop Jhonny Peralta were elected by fans to start.

Albert Pujols of the Angels will start at first base for the AL in place of Detroit’s Miguel Cabrera, who injured a calf muscle Friday. Pittsburgh’s Andrew McCutchen will start in the NL outfield instead of Miami’s Giancarlo Stanton, who broke his hand on June 26.

The 23-year-old Bryant made his big league debut April 17 and began Monday with a .279 average, 12 homers and 49 RBIs. “Obviously, I’ve been at some All-Star Games, but I don’t think anything can compare to making the major league All-Star team,” he said. “It is kind of weird right now. We have a game in an hour, so I’m trying not to get too excited and whatnot, but obviously it’s pretty cool.”

He’s open to participating in the Home Run Derby.

“It’s all happened so quick.

I’ve just been having so much fun with this, my baseball career,” Bryant said. “Right now, it’s a pretty special feeling for me.”

St. Louis tops the NL with five players. Peralta was elected to start along with outfielder Matt Holliday, who isn’t sure when he’ll be activated from the disabled list.

Catcher Yadier Molina and reliever Trevor Rosenthal were elected by players, and NL manager Bruce Bochy of San Francisco picked pitcher Michael Wacha.

Cincinnati closer Aroldis Chapman was elected by players and is the second member of the hometown Reds on the NL roster. Third baseman Todd Frazier was elected to start.

Pittsburgh pitcher A.J. Burnett, in his 17th and what he says will be his final season, became an All-Star for the first time. At 38, he’s the oldest player headed to the game.

Washington outfielder Bryce Harper, a three-time All-Star at age 22, is the youngest. Harper said Monday he won’t participate in the Home Run Derby because his father isn’t available to pitch to him following shoulder surgery.

By JENNA FRYER The Associated Press DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Riding bumper-to-bumper at nearly 200 mph, Austin Dillon was smack in the middle of a pack of cars headed to the checkered flag when he suddenly was sent on the ride of his life.

A wreck that began three rows ahead of him sent cars spinning all over the track.

When one turned into him, the force of the hit flipped his car up and over two others. Dillon sailed nearly upside down into the Daytona International Speedway catchfence with such a hard hit that it nearly brought his 3,500-pound car to a sudden stop.

The fence acted like a slingshot, sending the sheared race car back onto the track, where it landed on its roof and was hit again while the engine block smoldered nearby. Left behind was a handful of fans who received only minor injuries from the debris, and a gaping hole in the fence, the mesh torn away.

Oilers get G Nilsson in trade with Blackhawks

EDMONTON, Alberta – The Edmonton Oilers have acquired goaltender Anders Nilsson in a trade with the Blackhawks.

The Hawks obtained forward Liam Coughlin in Monday’s deal.

Coughlin, 20, was a fifth-round pick in last year’s draft.

Nilsson, 25, has a 9-9 record and a 3.05 goals-against average in 23 career NHL games with the New York Islanders.

He played in the Kontinental Hockey League last season.

Nilsson was traded from New York to the Hawks in October in the deal that sent defenseman Nick Leddy to the Islanders.

That’s good news for hot dog aficionados who were saddened last fall when Hot Doug’s founder Doug Sohn closed his “sausage superstore” on the city’s North Side. It was known for hot dogs stuffed with everything from yak to rattlesnake.

The initial offerings aren’t quite so unusual. But they are based on some of Sohn’s most popular sausages. And they’re named after former Cubs players Rick Reushel, Dave Kingman and Carmen Fanzone.

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com JOLIET – In terms of dollars and cents, the $200 that 12-year-old Mary Schuler of Joliet raised for the Hydrocephalus Association is not record-shattering.

But for the girl who’s matter-of-factly lived with a shunt from her brain to her stomach since she was 8 weeks old, raising funds was her second goal. The first was raising awareness for hydrocephalus.

Still, Mary’s mother, Suzanne Schuler of Joliet, said she was taken aback when Mary approached her and said she wanted to host a bake sale.

“It was outside my comfort zone,” Schuler said. “I thought it was a good idea in theory, but with so many fundraisers today, I wasn’t sure we could pull it off or find a location receptive to us.”

Those concerns vanished when Schuler shared Mary’s idea with her good friend, Suzi Arnett of Joliet, student council moderator at Joliet Catholic Academy. Arnett thought partnering with Mary, nicknamed “Mary Sunshine,” would make a great service project for her students.

“I thought it was a good way to spread the cause,” Arnett said, “and for the high school kids to show the younger students what it is to do service.”

Hydrocephalus, according to the Hydrocephalus Association, is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid within cavities in the brain called ventricles. In infants as the ventricles enlarge, the pressure causes the head to increase in size. More than 1 million people in the United States have hydrocephalus.

wasn’t sure how Mary’s hydrocephalus was missed.

Schuler’s pregnancy was healthy, and Mary was healthy when she was born, except she was a little irritable and seemed to have a wandering eye.

At Mary’s eight-week checkup, Mary’s doctor noticed her head was larger than normal, Schuler said.

The doctor referred them to a neurologist in Chicago.

Forty-eight hours later, Mary received her shunt.

“We were worried about brain damage,” Schuler said, “but we caught it early.”

A second miracle occurred the day after surgery.

“She laughed for the first time,” Schuler said. “[Before that] she must have been in excruciating pain.”

Since then, Mary’s shunt has been revised three times, Schuler said. The catheter that goes from the back of her

But the shunt also can become clogged occasionally.

When that happens, Schuler said, pressure builds up in Mary’s brain, and the severe headaches return.

Schuler worries about infection each time Mary has brain surgery and wonders why technology hasn’t caught up with hydrocephalus treatments.

“We have 3D heart imaging, but we’re still using

concepts from 50 years ago,” Schuler said about hydrocephalus treatments. “The more money we raise, the more research they can do.”

On a given bridge deal, sometimes declarer or the defenders reach perfection, finding the winning line or defense – as in this deal. It was played by four of my students, who (unusually) requested anonymity.

How did the defense go against four spades following West’s diamond-10 lead?

After East’s opening bid and South’s overcall, West made a negative double. That showed four hearts, but she might have held five hearts in a hand too weak for a two-heart response. Then, North was overly exuberant. She should have settled for a game-invitational sequence. (This could have been via an old-fashioned jump to three spades or a modern three-diamond cue-bid raise.) But with a surge of adrenaline, she bid four spades, hoping either that the contract would sneak home or that her opponents would make an indiscreet foray at the five-level. East was tempted with her strong hand, but allowed her quasi-balanced pattern to dissuade her from going higher.

East won the first trick with her diamond ace and accurately shifted to the heart six. Now West, correctly judging that this was not a singleton, put in her jack.

South won with dummy’s queen and led a trump, but East dashed in with her ace and played her second heart. West won with her ace and returned the suit, which East ruffed to defeat the contract. Perfection!

should aim for 30 to 38 grams per day. Look for cereals that contain 5 or more grams of fiber per serving.

• Low Sugar. Choose cereals that provide no more than 5 grams of sugar per serving. Unfortunately, that may be easier said than done.

Most cold cereals in the United States come preloaded with added sugars. To know how much sugar you’re getting, read the Nutrition Facts label on the side of the cereal box. And avoid cereals “frosted” with layers of sugar.

• Low Sodium. Sodium hides in many unexpected foods, and cereal is one of them. The current dietary guidelines recommend limiting sodium to 2,300 mg per day.

For people 51 and older, and those of any age who are African-American or who have high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease, guidelines recommend no more than 1,500 mg per day. So look for cereals with no more than 200 mg of sodium per serving.

• Low Calories. Most cereals list a serving size as one cup or just three-quarters of a cup.

That’s far less than the average bowl can hold. Your best bet is to look for cereals with less than 150 calories per serving. Then, use a measuring cup when serving yourself.

Finally, complement your cereal with some low-fat milk for protein and calcium, and add fresh fruit for natural sweetness and fiber.

eat cereal for breakfast, but I’ve heard many cereals aren’t all that healthy. What should I look for in a healthy cereal?

Dear Reader: Walk into any grocery store and you’ll see shelves packed full of breakfast cereals all touting important health benefits.

Labels and marketing promises on boxes can be confusing – and sometimes misleading.

I spoke with Kathy McManus, director of the Department of Nutrition at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital. She recommends reading ingredient lists carefully and choosing cereals that meet the following criteria: • Whole Grains. Many cereals are made with refined grains, which are full of carbohydrates that easily and rapidly turn into simple sugars.

The absorption of these sugars from the gut causes your blood sugar to spike. These spikes cause your pancreas to “overwork” making insulin. This, in turn, can raise a person’s risk of getting Type 2 diabetes, the most common kind of diabetes.

Instead, look for a breakfast cereal made of corn, whole wheat or brown rice. These are whole grains rich in fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. The process of converting whole grains into simple sugars takes longer, so blood sugar levels rise in a more even and constant fashion.

• Fiber. The indigestible component of plant food, fiber is vital for good health. It lowers blood sugar and cholesterol, and can help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and obesity.

Dear Trusting Mom: I’d be curious to know what Mara’s father thinks of this. But since you asked me, let me point out that your little girl may be sweet and mature for her age, but at 6 years old she is also inexperienced, trusting and vulnerable.

Because she loves Uncle Bob, I can understand why she might want to stay overnight at his house. In 99 percent of the cases it would be OK. But in light of what we see in the news, it’s your job as a mother to err on the side of caution, and I don’t recommend it.
