Economy Power and Light Company – Joliet The Economy Light and Power Company was incorporated in 1901, under the laws of Illinois, as a re-incorporation of a company of the same name that was established in July 1890. In 1906, the company again was re-incorporated after the Channahon Power Company was purchased.

The power needs for local consumers was produced by the dam near the Jackson Street bridge that helped to operate the large generators that supplied the power to the city.

In the first decade of the 20th century, the company owned a generating plant in Joliet and a substation at Lemont, having a total daily capacity of 7,000 kw.

In 1905, the Economy Light and Power Company of Joliet obtained permission from the Illinois and Michigan Canal Company to lease and build a small power dam across the Des Plaines River at Dresden Heights (Channahon).

State and local officials objected, claiming it would impede navigation on a proposed Deep Waterway that would make Chicago accessible to ocean-going vessels via the Mississippi River.

Economy Light and Power responded by bringing its own suit to seize a large tract of land surrounding the Dresden site, claiming a private business that was an essential utility provider should enjoy the right to eminent domain.

When utility mogul Samuel Insull and his Commonwealth Edison company took control of Economy Light and Power, and began construction on a new dam in 1907, the Sanitary District of Metropolitan

Chicago responded by trying to halt the construction through an act in the state legislature.

Local and state governments also joined in a lawsuit against Economy, and focused their argument on the navigability issue.

The Grundy County Court and the state appellate court both sided with the company.

On Oct. 26, 1909, the Supreme Court of Illinois held that the title of the Economy Light & Power Company to “water powers” of the Des Plaines River was valid.

In December of the same year, the U.S. Government began suit in Federal Court against the company over the construction of the same dam at Dresden Heights. The Federal Government believed the Des Plaines River is a

The power needed to run the company generators was created by the 12-foot drop in water level from the upstream headrace to the downstream tailrace. The old Jackson Street Bridge, the dam and the I&M Canal were cleared and removed in 1932, as part of the deep water Illinois Waterway Project.

On June 22, 1914, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Economy and Insull, and the ruling was based on riparian rights arguments and the validity of the original lease.

In 1911, Samuel Insull acquired five companies and formed a new holding company, Public Service Company of Northern Illinois (Public Service). Joliet completes first spring planting in 7-year tree program

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – Brian Neumann’s crews were planting 33 trees on the city parkway along Hennepin Drive last week, and nearly every tree was a different species.

“The idea is to have a different species of tree in every spot,” Neumann said, pointing to one tulip tree, then a black gum and then a Kentucky coffee. “The idea is to really, really diversify it.”

The trees were replacing dead ash trees, killed by the emerald ash borer, in Joliet parkways.

The Fields on Caton Farm Inc., Neumann’s nursery, planted about 500 trees for Joliet this spring. The trees planted Friday on Hennepin Drive were the last for the spring planting.

But crews will be back in the fall with more trees. After that, they will come for another six years as The Fields fulfills a contract to replace about 7,000 ash trees along city parkways lost to the emerald ash borer.

Joliet and other towns are getting their trees back.

But parkways will look a bit different as ash trees are replaced.

Repetition of species can have a nice, orderly appearance along certain city thoroughfares and village streets, as the trees bloom, flower and change colors in uniformity.

But Neumann said cities facing the expense of replacing thousands of ash trees have diversified to avoid another unexpected tree disease.

“These trees here are honey locusts,” he said, pointing to trees still flourishing in the Hennepin Drive parkway.

“What happens if there’s a problem with honey locusts?”

“They were the most beautiful trees there were,” Gollick said. “They grew well in that

soil. Parkways can be terrible soil. There is a lot of construction debris.”

Train station bids come in $2.1M over budget

By BOB OKON bokon@shawmedia.com JOLIET – The low bid for a new train station came in $2.1 million over budget, leading to another possible price spike in the construction of the Gateway Transportation Center.

The city first will see what caused the bids to come in high, City Manager Jim Hock said.

“Then we are going to sit down with IDOT [Illinois Department of Transportation] to see if we can adjust the scope and price of the project,” Hock said. “We’ll be sitting down with IDOT to see what we can do to stay within budget.”

The city also has learned that a $130,000 state grant that was to be used to fix a leaky roof above the Union Station banquet hall was at least put on hold and possibly canceled.

The Gateway Transportation Center, which includes the old Union Station building for commercial uses, adds a new train station and loading platforms, while also bringing a

bus station downtown.

The bus station already has been downsized for budget reasons.

The entire project was last pegged at $46 million, which compares to the original estimate of $42 million when it started in 2010. The city’s share of the project is $9.5 million, but that already is $2.3 million higher than originally budgeted.

A state grant funds the bulk of the project. Freight railroads that run through downtown also have contributed money.

The city already has moved commuter platforms to the other side of the railroad tracks from Union Station, which has been shut down except for the banquet facility.

“We cannot [do without] a train station,” said Councilman Jim McFarland, who has raised questions previously about the cost of the project.

“We’re kind of stuck here with this project, and we need to see it through to completion.”

McFarland, however, said

the city needs to “see what we can to do save costs and still have a functioning train station.”

The city got two bids on the project to build the train station and commuter platforms.

The project was estimated at $13.5 million.

Walsh Construction submitted the low bid at $15.6 million.

John Burns Construction bid $16.8 million.

Hock said city engineering consultants will meet with Walsh Construction to identify what aspects of the project cost more than expected.

The grant for roof repairs at Union Station fell victim to the state’s budget problems.

It was among 400 state grants canceled recently, Hock said.

The city has set aside $1.6 million of the Gateway Transportation Center budget for renovations at Union Station, which could be used for roof repairs. But if the city has to pay more than expected for the new train station, Hock said, “it will eat away at that $1.6 million.”

CREST HILL – An Iowa-based cold storage facility is continuing its expansion in Illinois by building a warehouse connection in Crest Hill.

Cloverleaf Cold Storage’s nearly 220,000-square-foot warehouse will be dedicated for use with one of its clients, Rich Foods. It will be built on the 16 acres of land on the southeast corner of Division Street and Advantage Drive, Mayor Ray Soliman said.

An enclosed conveyor belt will be built over Advantage Drive to connect the warehouse with Rich Foods’ existing manufacturing and Midwest distribution facility at 21511 Division St. “It’s basically a one-stop shop,” Soliman said. “The storage facility will hold up to 20,000 pizzas from Rich Foods.

A few trucks would distribute to all of the suppliers.”

The warehouse is expected to break ground soon and open next spring, creating about 50 jobs, Soliman said.

The 16 acres also gives Cloverleaf the option to expand in the future an additional 110,000 square feet, adding 25 to 30 more jobs.

“With the creation of the jobs it’s going to be a tremen-

dous asset to the city of Crest Hill,” Soliman said.

The warehouse is the first addition to the Crest Hill Industrial Park since the Old Dominion and Dayton freight line companies moved there about 18 months ago, Soliman said.

Cloverleaf built its first facility in Illinois last year, when it opened a 235,000-square-foot warehouse in Monmouth, adding 155 local full-time jobs, according to a news release from the governor’s office.

The family-owned business received an estimated $6 million assistance package, and the city of Monmouth and Warren County gave it $3.4 million in incentives, most of it as a 10-year abatement on property taxes, according to the news release.

Soliman and John Greuling from the Will County Center for Economic Development, which helped the city bring Cloverleaf, said the company didn’t receive any financial incentives for the 220,000-square-foot warehouse.

“It’s kind of a special project,” Greuling said about the conveyor belt overpass.

“Once the state figures out what they’re going to do with the budget, this project could receive state assistance.”

3-year-old dies in Mokena pool

By BRIAN STANLEY bstanley@shawmedia.com MOKENA – Police are investigating the death of a 3-year-old from Tinley Park who died Saturday after he was found unresponsive in a swimming pool in Mokena.

Lamees Mohammed was pronounced dead at 10:10 p.m.

room of Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, according to the Will County Coroner’s office. Will County Coroner Patrick K. O’Neil said the child was “found unresponsive in a swimming pool” at a residence in the 19000 block of Lancaster Drive. Mokena police are investigating.

An autopsy is scheduled for Monday.

Greenhouse Group discussion resumes Monday

Greenhouse Group already has locations approved by officials in Mokena and Deerfield.

“We’re hopeful the board understands that we’re abiding by state law,” Kahn said when asked about his outlook on Monday’s meeting. “We hope the results come out similar to our previous two locations.”

What could complicate the matter, however, is the city’s vacant aldermanic seat. The dispensary discussion was tabled after Alderman Bill Martin motioned to allow time to fill the seat and for the City Council to further research

the factors involved in a medical marijuana dispensary.

Monday’s meeting agenda starts with Mayor Richard Kopczick’s appointment of a candidate to fill the open seat.

Kopczick’s first appointment – former Alderman Julian Houston on the wishes of 34year retired Alderman Ken Sereno – was voted down, 3-4.

The Grundy County Republican Central Committee has nominated Thomas Hougas for the seat.

Council decides Monday not to approve his appointment, it’s possible the dispensary location discussion would be tabled again. But council can just as easily vote on the location.

Kahn said Greenhouse Group is ready for Monday’s meeting but it doesn’t decide how the meeting is structured.

“We are prepared at any time to talk about details and answer questions,” Kahn said.

“How the city chooses to do its meeting is up to them.”

MORRIS – Months of debate on multiple fronts could reach resolution Monday night during the first Morris City Council meeting in three weeks.

Whether the weekend’s holiday fireworks carry over to the Morris Municipal Services Facility’s council chambers remains to be seen, but hot-button issues have packed the room with Morris residents in recent meetings.

The City Council is scheduled to discuss the Morris Planning Commission’s recommendation to approve an

ordinance granting a conditional permitted use to Greenhouse Group LLC to open a medical marijuana dispensary at the former Rockwell Inn at 2400 W. Route 6.

The City Council voted 4-3 on June 1 to table discussion on the proposed location, after a presentation by Greenhouse Group was followed by more than two hours of debate and questions from councilmembers and about 20 residents, directed toward Greenhouse Group COO Matt Darin and CEO Mitch Khan.

In February, Gov. Bruce Rauner awarded 18 licenses to grow and 52 licenses to sell medical marijuana in Illinois.

time. Zarembski explained that it’s to honor those who gave their lives for America.

Ever since that day, his grandson, now 9, has always saluted the flag as they pass by on I-80.

Zarembski’s grandson goes along to Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery on Veterans Day to plant flags. He also likes to go along to pull them back up. Now Zarembski’s granddaughters want to be a part of it.

“I try to believe we have instilled in him what it means [to honor veterans],” Zarembski said.

As one of their projects, the Shorewood Glen Veterans Group began going to Hines Hospital Fisher House last year to cook and serve food to families of veterans in the nearby hospitals. The group intends to do it again this fall and barbecued ribs are on the menu.

It’s their way of giving back to those veterans and their families still suffering.

“I believe all veterans should be treated well, especially those that came back with injuries,” Zarembski said.”We have to take care of our own.”

Lincoln-Way earns two grants to enhance science education

By FELIX SARVER fsarver@shawmedia.com NEW LENOX – Lincoln-Way High School District 210 teachers will have access to the world’s largest library of online simulations for science and math education.

The school district was awarded two grants to enhance earth science, technology, engineering and mathematics

instruction in classrooms in each high school, according to a news release.

Under one grant, teachers will receive a subscription to an online database called Explore Learning Gizmos, as part of the Gizmos Science Grant program.

Maria Wilson, Lincoln-Way North science department chairwoman, and Sarah Highfill, Lincoln-Way Central sci-

ence department chairwoman, were both responsible in securing the grant.

The Gizmos program will provide professional development and help teachers bring STEM instruction to a deeper level with simulations, school officials said. The library program is aimed at grades three to 12.

SHOREWOOD – What did the Fourth of July mean to you? Fireworks, parades, barbecues and family get-togethers?

Do you remember to think of it as Independence Day? “Independence Day is what this country was built on, it gave us the freedoms we have,” said Bob Thomas, retired a Army commander sergeant major.

Thomas spent 22 years in the U.S. Army reserves, as well as 30 years on the Chicago Police Department. The southwest side Chicago transplant now lives in Shorewood Glen and is president of Shorewood Glen Veterans Group.

He spent his last eight years in the service as commander of the 86th Army Reserve, which had 16,000 soldiers in 170 units. He was responsible for making sure the soldiers were trained right.

Five thousand soldiers were called up for Desert Storm and Desert Shield during that time.

As part of Shorewood Glen’s Color Guard, Thomas also marches in parades, including last year’s Shorewood Crossroad’s Fest along with other veteran’s from the

group. There are 151 veterans living at Shorewood Glen, including four World War II vets.

As they passed through the crowd, everyone stood up and cheered, Thomas said. It brought tears to his eyes.

“I had a lot of friends who went to Vietnam and they didn’t get that [support],” he said. “I really think patriotism is there now.”

Vice president of the veterans group, Jerry Zarembski, was one of four brothers drafted within six months of each other in 1965. Two were stationed in Vietnam; Jerry and one brother were sent to Germany.

It was a rare thing for four brothers to be drafted at the same time, Zarembski said, and more rare for two to be sent into combat together.

Independence Day means a lot to him as a veteran, he said.

“The most important [veterans] are not with us anymore,” Zarembski said. “They are the ones who gave us their all for the United States.”

Zarembski is passing his patriotism on to his grandchildren by example. Each time he passes the large flag that flies on the south side of Interstate 80 just east of Joliet, he automatically salutes.

Ex-Minooka woman’s niche was helping others

By DENISE M. BARAN–UNLAND dunland@shawmedia.com MINOOKA – Lavern Wilda of Minooka knew his daughter, Kathleen “Kathie” Walters, a medical assistant, loved taking care of people.

That aspect of her, he said, had been present since childhood.

Still, Lavern marveled at Kathie’s ability to care for the terminally ill, her own mother Deborah Wilda of Minooka, and even Lavern himself after procedures for diverticulitis.

Lavern once asked her how she did it.

“She just went, ‘Well, that’s what I do,’ ” Lavern said.

Jonathan Walters of Yorkville, Kathie’s husband, said he met Kathie online in 2008. He liked her blue eyes, beautiful smile and the fact they had mutual interests (country music and sports).

So he didn’t mind that many of their dates revolved

around caring for Deborah, who had lost her memory and the ability to walk and talk about the time Jonathan met Kathie.

While Kathie never minded her caretaking role, this reversal of the mother/ daughter relationship was hard on Kathie in other ways.

“They were very close growing up,” Jonathan said, “Sometimes, she just needed her mom.”

Eventually, Jonathan said, he and Kathie moved in with her parents because Deborah required that much help.

“She said, ‘I have to take care of my mother,’ and I said, ‘I understand. I would do the same for my mother,’ ” Jonathan said. “It showed how caring she was. She loved her family and that meant a lot to me.”

Jonathan feels that Kathie’s compassion for others and willingness to assist them in their most basic needs was all the more remarkable considering Kathie

Lavern said Kathie was in her early 20s when she began to have back pain because of degenerative discs. In 2008, shortly before Jonathan met her, Kathie had surgery to remove the discs and fuse the area together with rods, Jonathan said, but she still had pain.

Although Kathie was working as a certified nurse

assistant when Jonathan first met her and had resumed this work when Deborah’s health improved, Jonathan said the physical requirements of the job was hard on Kathleen’s back.

Still, Kathie persisted.

“She had a lot of older patients and got very attached to them,” Jonathan said. “She was just super-caring. She wanted to do everything she could for them.”

When the pain became too much, Kathie went back to school to become a medical assistant. During this, she also saw a pain specialist and tried a TENS unit, Jonathan said, but nothing helped.

Finally, Kathleen had no option but more surgery, so she reluctantly took a leave of absence from school, Jonathan said. In October 2014, Kathie graduated from Everest College in North Aurora, he added.

Thrilled she could still help patients without stressing her back with lifting

them and helping them to sit up, Kathie began looking for a job. She was 36 when she died suddenly May 9 from a pulmonary edema.

Just two days earlier, Kathie had gone to orientation for her job with a home health care company.

“She was super excited,” Jonathan said. “We had started looking for another place and everything just seemed to be coming together.” He paused. “And then Saturday came. You just never know.”

It was a bright future for someone who had dropped out of high school. Lavern said Kathie did receive her diploma after completing night classes at Joliet West High School when she was 19.

“She was my baby girl,” Lavern said. “I was so proud of her.”

“I’m still getting calls from people asking when it’s going to happen, because they haven’t got to them yet,” Hug said. “I think in three to five years you’ll see a huge difference. ... I think we should have started sooner.”

The city has taken down about 5,000 ash trees in parkways. It expects to cut down another 2,000 to 5,000 trees infested with emerald ash borer.

The Fields on Caton Farm is expanding its 150-acre tree farm in Crest Hill to accommodate the demand for more trees from municipalities.

The nursery has contracts as far north as Bartlett and as far east as Flossmoor. It supplies trees to local towns, including Shorewood, Channahon and Minooka.

For Joliet, the nursery has devoted acreage for trees that will be grown exclusively for the city over the next several years. It will ensure the diversity of stock demanded by Joliet, Neumann said. The city tree list includes more than 40 different species.

Because of the high demand for replacement trees in city parkways, not all municipalities can get the species they want when they want them, Neumann said.

The Joliet program ensures

the city can meet its diversity goals.

“I was able to choose the species that I wanted for our parkways and not take what they have,” Joliet city arborist Jim Teiber said.

In the first two years of the program, Joliet will take stock trees until the trees be-

ing grown at the nursery are ready to be planted in parkways.

“But I do have a specific list of stock material they must provide,” Teiber said.

“They either have to have that in stock or find it at a local nursery at the same price.”

People want replace-

ment trees in the parkways, but there is not widespread awareness of the city program, he said.

“I don’t think the residents are aware that we have this program for the next seven years,” Teiber said. “When they are aware, they are very ecstatic.”

Born in Aurora, IL to the late John Thornton and Beth (nee Salisbury) Thornton. Beloved Wife of the late Edwin H. Bryant; cherished Mother of the late Edwin H. Bryant Jr., John (Teresa) Bryant, Timothy (Gwen) Bryant, Kenneth Bryant, Evelynn (Doug) Clark, Michele (Robert Sr.) White and Eva Jackson. Proud and adoring Grandmother of many; dear Sister of Karen (Jerry) Anderson, Gary (the late Linda) Thornton, Roger (Sandy) Thornton, the late Dennis Thornton and Darlene (the late Todd) Thornton. He married Anna Mae Larson on March 17, 1956 at the First Lutheran Church in Joliet. They lived most of their married life in Lockport and Mazon.

For over 35 years he was employed at Caterpillar Tractor Company in Joliet.

Survived by two daughters, Brenda (Albert) Berg of Verona and Sherry (Richard) Ellis of St. Joseph, MI; one son, John(Alan)Finney of Bridgman, MI; four grandchildren, Rachel (Keith) Crumb of Verona, Rory Ellis of Crest Hill, Michelle Berg of Mazon and Sarah Berg of Ottawa; three great grandsons, Riley and Mason Crumb and Derek Gaul; one great granddaughter, Sierra Berg; several nieces and nephews.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES – Diana Douglas, the first wife of Kirk Douglas and mother of Michael Douglas, died Saturday in Los Angeles. She was 92.

Douglas died of cancer at a motion picture industry retirement home in the Woodland Hills neighborhood, according to an obituary from Michael Douglas’s production company, Furthur Films. It cited Diana Douglas’s husband of 15 years, Donald A. Webster of Washington, D.C. Born Diana Love Dill in Bermuda, where her family had lived for centuries and her father was the attorney general, Douglas later moved to New York and met Kirk Douglas while they were both studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.

She later went to California on a $200-a-week contract with Warner Bros. against Douglas’s advice she try for Broadway instead.

They wed that November and went on the have two sons, Michael and Joel, before divorcing in 1951.

“We had brought to marriage such different concepts of what it constituted, what was expected due,” she wrote in her memoir, “In the Wings and Beyond.”

The two remained on amicable terms. She even appeared with him in several movies, including her last film, 2003’s “It Runs in the Family,” which also starred Michael Douglas and one of her grandsons, Cameron.

Douglas also was married to actor Bill Darrid from 1956 until his death in 1992.

Szabad, Hungary’s first post-Soviet parliament chief, dies

By PABLO GORONDI The Associated Press BUDAPEST, Hungary – Gyorgy Szabad, a historian who survived forced labor during the Holocaust to become the speaker of Hungary’s first post-communist Parliament, has died at age 90.

Szabad’s death Friday was announced by Parliament, where he was speaker between 1990 and 1994. No cause of death was given.

Szabad, a university histo-

ry professor, also played a key role in the 1989-1990 negotiations which led to the end of Hungary’s communist regime.

Tributes from all sides of the political spectrum highlighted his contributions to democracy.

Szabad was “one of the leading figures of national thought and the new Hungarian democracy,” said a joint statement from President Janos Ader, Prime Minister Viktor Orban and Parliamentary Speaker Laszlo Kover.

The opposition Together party, meanwhile, said Szabad, in his role as speaker, helped ensure “that the huge political and social changes happened in the form of a peaceful transition.”

Szabad was born to a Hungarian-Jewish family in Arad, Romania, on Aug. 4, 1924, and moved to Budapest as a child.

His university application was rejected because of a Hungarian policy that limited the number of Jews in higher education.

Instead, Szabad worked for a time as an apprentice gardener.

In October 1944, he escaped from a forced labor brigade, to which many Hungarian Jewish men were sent during the Holocaust. In 1945, he was captured by Soviet troops for more forced labor, but again was able to escape.

He is survived by his second wife, Andrea Sujan and their daughter Julia.

Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.

The grant will provide lab materials for earth science and Lincoln-Way’s Advanced Placement environmental science class.

Maxine Pearl Likes, age 89, of Plainfield, passed away Sunday, June 28, 2015 at The Parc at Joliet.

Born September 29, 1925 in Roxana, Illinois, she was the daughter of Herbert and Hazel Eve (nee Cullum) McDonough.

Maxine was a loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She sacrificed much to provide for a large family of ten children.

She was also a faithful member of Faith Bible Church, and an active volunteer with Child Evangelism Fellowship sharing the message of Jesus Christ.

Surviving are her loving children, Lynn (Bill) Doyle, Brenda Drummond, Tad Likes, Gil (Denise) Likes, Greg Likes, Hal Likes, Mila (Glen) Ezekiel, and Paul (Aimee) Likes; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Jean McDonough; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Harold Walter Likes; one daughter, Wendy Dew; one son, Charles Likes; one grandson, Daniel Doyle; her parents; one sister, Mary Lou Hunter; and two brothers, Charles and Francis McDonough.

Funeral Services for Maxine Pearl Likes will be held Wednesday, July 8, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black at Essington Rds., Joliet, IL. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Bison thrive on the Illinois prairie; 14 calves born

CHICAGO – Love is in the air for bison on an Illinois prairie.

The Chicago Tribune reported that after bison were reintroduced to the Nachusa Grasslands, there are signs they are introducing themselves to each other.

Fourteen bison calves were born this past spring at the 3,500-acre grasslands, about 95 miles west of Chicago that’s owned by The Nature Conservancy, bringing the number of bison in the area to 44.

“They’re doing well,” Nachusa project director Bill Kleiman said of the growing herd, which grew a bit more Wednesday with the birth of another calf.

“They look just like they belong, which they do.”

The project started in October when bison were trucked in from Broken Kettle Grasslands near Sioux City, Iowa. It is one of several efforts dating back to the 1900s to restore the bison after hunting and mass slaughter nearly wiped out the bison population throughout the United States in the 1800s.

Today, an estimated 450,000 bison are in the country, and the project is one of a few that has brought bison back to Illinois and other areas east of the Mississippi River.

The bison apparently are helping to bring other wildlife back to the region. Nachusa restoration ecologist Cody Considine said researchers are seeing more mice and voles building nests in bison hair. And he said the insects attracted to the bison are, in turn, attracting swallows that he said can be seen hovering over the herd.

Quincy man charged in shooting that killed 1, wounded 1

QUINCY – Quincy police have arrested an 18-year-old man after a shooting that left one man dead and another critically injured.

WGEM-TV said police have charged Gavin Masters of Quincy with murder in the shooting Saturday night.

The Herald-Whig said Randy T. Bowser-Smith, 21, died after being taken to a Quincy hospital. The other shooting victim, Skyler L. Osborne, 21, remained in critical condition.

It was not immediately clear if Masters has an attorney. Online records showed he was in custody at the Adams County Jail.

SIU deals with two vacancies among three top spots

CARBONDALE – Southern Illinois University could see two of its top three posts vacant when school starts this summer.

Julie Furst-Bowe resigned recently as chancellor of the SIU-Edwardsville campus. SIU

President Randy Dunn already is filling in as Carbondale-campus chancellor because of a death in November.

Dunn told the Southern Illinoisan (he will recommend identifying interim candidates for Edwardsville from which the board of trustees can choose so someone is in the job by the start of classes.

He suggested the Carbondale chancellor’s post could be filled by a short-term appointment because “we don’t have the luxury of being in maintenance mode right now.”

Furst-Bowe took a job as vice president of instruction at a Wisconsin technical school.

Man’s fundraising walk for memorial coming to close

PRINCEVILLE – A central Illinois community is planning a warm welcome home for an 84-year-old man who set out to walk across the state to help raise money for a memorial park dedicated to his wife.

The Journal Star said Princeville native Dean Troutman was scheduled to return from his approximately 700-mile trek Sunday afternoon, when a party was planned for him. He began the walk in April.

Smithsonian exhibit on water to come to southern Illinois

CARBONDALE – A southern Illinois museum will be among six sites in the state to host a Smithsonian Institution exhibit on water starting next year.

The exhibit explores the importance of water to Americans.

The Southern Illinoisan said the exhibit will run from Dec. 10, 2016, to Jan. 22, 2017, at the Science Center of Southern Illinois in Carbondale.

Bringing the exhibit to Carbondale is a joint venture between Illinois Humanities and the Smithsonian Institution.

Matt Meacham, a program coordinator for Illinois Humanities, said water often serves as a vital symbol in literature, art, music, folklore and religious life.

The newspaper said the exhibit also will be in Franklin Grove, Mahomet, Lawrenceville, Valmeyer and Channahon.

WASHINGTON – Members of Congress return from July Fourth fireworks and parades Tuesday facing a daunting summer workload and an impending deadline to fund the government or risk a shutdown in the fall.

Standoff over passwords breaks new legal ground

HOUSTON – A Houston-area man had used social media to promote his gun store, posting politically charged messages that criticized the president and promoted Second Amendment rights. But after Jeremy Alcede lost ownership of his store in bankruptcy, a judge declared the business’s Facebook and Twitter accounts property that belonged to the new owner and ordered Alcede to turn over the passwords.

Alcede, who argued the accounts were personal, refused and spent nearly seven weeks in federal custody until he complied with the order in May. The judge’s ruling charts new legal territory in awarding property in bankruptcy proceedings and points to the growing importance of social media accounts as business assets. Legal experts say it also provides a lesson for all business owners active in social media about keeping separate accounts.

Greece enters uncharted territory after ‘no’ vote in referendum

By ELENA BECATOROS and DEMETRIS NELLAS The Associated Press ATHENS – Greece lurched into uncharted territory and an uncertain future in Europe’s common currency Sunday after voters overwhelmingly rejected demands by international creditors for more austerity measures in exchange for a bailout of its bankrupt economy.

Results showed 61 percent voted “no,” compared with 38 percent for “yes,” with 97 percent of the vote counted. The referendum – Greece’s first in more than four decades – came amid severe restrictions on financial transactions in the country, imposed last week to stem a bank run that accelerated after the vote was called.

Thousands of jubilant government supporters celebrated in Syntagma Square in front of Parliament, waving Greek flags and chanting “No, no, no!”

It was a decisive victory for Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, who had gambled the future of his 5-month-old coalition government – and his

country – in an all-or-nothing game of brinkmanship with Greece’s creditors from other European countries that use the euro currency, the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank.

“Today we celebrate the victory of democracy,” Tsipras said in a televised address to the nation, describing Sunday as “a bright day in the history of Europe.”

“We proved even in the most difficult circumstances that democracy won’t be blackmailed,” he said.

Tsipras called the referendum last weekend, saying a “no” vote would strengthen his hand to negotiate a better deal for his country. His government has said it believes it would be possible to conclude a deal with creditors within 48 hours.

But European officials and most of Greece’s opposition parties painted the referendum as one of whether country kept using the euro currency – even though that was not the convoluted question asked on the ballot. Opinion polls Friday showed that 74 percent or more want their country to remain in the euro.

“Given the unfavorable conditions last week, you have made a very brave choice,” Tsipras told Greeks in his address. “But I am aware that the mandate you gave me is not a mandate for rupture.”

He said he would seek to negotiate a viable solution with the country’s creditors.

How European officials react to the referendum result will be critical for the country, and a eurozone summit was called for Tuesday evening to discuss the situation.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande spoke to each other Sunday night and agreed “that the vote of the Greek people must be respected,” Merkel’s office said.

The referendum result was “very regrettable for the future of Greece,” said Jeroen Dijsselbloem, head of the eurozone finance ministers’ meeting known as the Eurogroup, which also will meet Tuesday.

Dijsselbloem, who is finance minister for the Netherlands, had been a steadfast opponent of Greece as it sought better conditions during five months of bailout talks.

That’s how former Lewis University women’s basketball coach Lisa Carlsen felt after she recently accepted the head coaching position at Northern Illinois University.

The highlight of Carlsen’s eight years at Lewis came this past season, when her team enjoyed the best season in school history.

The Flyers went 31-3, which set new standards for most wins and fewest losses, and included a record 23-straight wins to open the season. Lewis spent five weeks on top of the national polls and advanced to its first NCAA Elite Eight appearance.

After the historic campaign was complete, Carlsen was recognized as the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Division II National Coach of the Year, in addition to gaining similar regional and conference honors.

But when the opportunity came her way to take over the Division I program in DeKalb and try to turn around the Huskies’ fortunes, Carlsen couldn’t turn it down.

“Northern Illinois was a great opportunity which was too good to pass up,” Carlsen said. “You don’t know when you’re going to get an opportunity like this. It’s hard to leave Lewis, but if you have a job where you love what you do, then it’s always hard to leave.”

She finished her Lewis career as the program’s all-time wins leader, with a 148-89 record. The Flyers made four NCAA appearances in the last five years, including three straight, and won two Great Lakes Valley Conference championships.

“Breaking the news to them in that way is not ideal, and you may not get to say goodbye the way that you want to.

“It’s hard for 18-to-22-yearolds to feel like you’re not abandoning them, and also knowing the players that we have coming back and how this could be another special year at Lewis.”

“The faculty and staff at Lewis have been very excited about this opportunity,” Carlsen said. “There wasn’t a lot of turnover here, so I had some really good friends and colleagues, and that’s what I’m going to miss. That’s what

allowed our program to be so special.

“I had the privilege to work with two athletic directors.

Dan Schumacher was different than Dr. (John) Planek, but both of them were really supportive, and I couldn’t have asked for two better people to work with.”

One of the toughest challenges facing anyone in the coaching profession is to have their family make major adjustments along with them.

“This is going to be a transition, so the first thing I thought about was: Is this best for my family?” Carlsen said.

“It’s hard for your kids to leave friends and people that they’re close to. But it’s not something that they haven’t done before.”

The other down side is that one chapter of your life suddenly ends, and then it’s quickly on to the next setting.

Carlsen celebrated her new move for a few days, then it was time to get to business.

“The press conference was Tuesday, my first day was Wednesday, and we hope to start recruiting this weekend,” Carlsen said. “So we’re diving right in to get things going.”

Cruz Pedregon Funny Car driver season crown the next year, winning six races and displacing John Force from the Funny Car championship list for the only time in the decade.

He kids about needing an extra pillow to sleep on after race weekends after the better part of 25 years on the circuit, but he agrees the racing is better than ever.

“We were probably a full second slower in the early 1990s,” Pedregon said. “Our top speed was 280 (mph). Now, at half-track, I’m doing 276 at 660 feet. It’s good for the sport as long as the cars race side by side.”

Getting an edge at that speed, and in an era where Pedregon sees more consistency among teams, is a chore.

“It’s getting harder and harder,” he said. “Technology

shaves off tenths of seconds.”

But, he said, that puts the outcome of the race back into the hands – and feet – of the driver.

“Reaction time,” Pedregon said. “Especially when you get into the quarterfinals or semifinals.”

Pedregon uses a variety of tactics to prepare for those moments. He meditates at the track, even though getting away from the noise would seem to be an impossibility.

“It’s just a way to focus. I get into my trailer and shut the door. It’s something I’ve dabbled in the last 15 to 20 years.

To that end, Pedregon also uses a racing simulator to keep

“I’m working on my reaction times every day,” he said.

“I’m been so involved in the technical end, I’ve kind of neglected my driving. There’s a simulator you can buy, complete with a (starting light) tree.”

The combination of the meditation and the simulation is this, Pedregon said: “The challenge of not thinking about the car when you’re in the car.”

That’s either zen or something from the Yogi Berra school of driving, but it has worked.

Pedregon is seventh in this

year’s standings and has been the top qualifier three times in the first 11 stops on the circuit.

Tony Pedregon is 14th.

Unlike IndyCar or NASCAR, where drivers on the same team often have the same setup for their cars, drag racing is less uniform.

“At one time, we were identical,” Cruz said of his brother’s car. “Now we’re truly a one-car team. We made some changes in the clutch and in cylinder heads last year, finished 10th, and now it’s beginning to pay off.” He’d like a big payoff, as in the $50,000 that goes with the victory, this weekend.

Cruz Pedregon has won 35 times in the NHRA’s Funny Car series. He’s won at 15 tracks from coast to coast, from Englishtown in New Jersey to Pomona in California. He’s won the U.S. Nationals, at near sea level at the Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida, and at altitude in Denver.

He’s won two season championships.

At 51, not much is missing from his résumé.

But winning at Joliet’s Route 66 Raceway is.

And he knows it.

“It’s Snap-On’s home track,” said Pedregon, referring to his main sponsor, headquartered in Kenosha, Wisconsin. “We push really hard there. What we have to do is race within ourselves.”

Tony Schumacher, who lived in north suburban Long Grove for years, can tell Pedregon about that. He’s 4 for 6 in final rounds at Route 66, with friends and family rooting him on.

When Pedregon arrives at Route 66 this week, he has Snap-On people to schmooze as well as prepare for three-day grind of qualifying and racing.

“It’s a great relationship,” Pedregon said. “It’s a great fit for us.”

And all the more reason to grab a victory in Joliet, where he’s been the top qualifier six times. It’s just getting to the final round Sunday, but seeing the win light hasn’t happened.

(Brother Tony has four Route 66 titles.)

It could happen this week, when the NHRA circus – with Top Fuel rail dragsters and all the rest, plus the sportsman class – rolls into Route 66 for its 18th summer visit to the drag strip judged to be among the best tracks on the circuit since it opened in 1998.

It won praise as the first wraparound grandstand and suite complex, and it has gained continuing plaudits from drivers for its smoothness. Pedregon places it among his top three tracks.

Slammers’ late rally stuns Wild Things STAFF REPORTS WASHINGTON, Penn. – The Joliet Slammers were 0-23 in games when they trailed after eight innings, and it appeared that would continue as they trailed 5-2 going into the ninth inning of Sunday’s Frontier League contest at Washington.

But the Slammers staged their second big ninth-inning comeback in four days.

And, unlike Thursday’s fourrun rally that fell a run shy against Traverse City, Joliet scored five times in the ninth to stun the wild Things, 7-5, to capture the rubber game of the series.

In the ninth, Nate Roberts and Alfredo Rodriguez (2 for 3) led off with walks against reliever Matt Purnell before Mike Garza singled to load the bases. Phil Bates (2 for 4, 2 runs) followed with a tworun single to pull Joliet (2025) to within 5-4.

After reliever Richie Mirowski retired a batter, Jack Cleary drove in two more runs with a single, then came around to score when the ball got past the center fielder. Purnell was charged with four earned runs, one more than he had allowed the whole season.

There was some drama in the bottom of the ninth after

Slammers reliever Navery Moore allowed the first two hitters to reach base. But he got out of the jam with a double play and a grounder to pick up the save.

The five-run outburst made a winner of Patrick Dyer, who allowed two hits and struck out two in 1 1⁄ 3 innings. He followed Tyler Murphy, who yielded two hits and struck out three in 21⁄3 innings. All five runs were given up by Slammers starter Andrew Strenge.

Joliet scored in the first when Charlie White tripled and came home on Roberts’ sacrifice fly, but the Wild Things scored three times in

the third to move in front.

The Slammers got a run back in the fifth when Bates singled, stole second and scored on a single by Hunter Ridge, but Washington scored two runs in the bottom of that inning.

Wild Things starter Luke Wilkins seemed to be headed for a victory after allowing only five hits and two earned runs while striking out three batters in eight innings.

Washington outhit the Slammers, 13-8, but left 15 on base, compared to two for Joliet.

The Slammers’ next game is Tuesday at home against the Frontier Greys.

White Sox make 4 errors, Coghlan, Hendricks lead Cubs past Marlins 4-game win streak ended The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – Manager Joe Maddon is not concerned about the Cubs’ lack of offense – as long as they’re still winning.

Kyle Hendricks (4-4) allowed five hits, walked one and struck out six in 71⁄3 innings in the Cubs’ 2-0 win Sunday over the Miami Marlins.

Cubs starters have posted a 1.08 ERA over their past six games, in which the team is 5-1.

“As long as you can pull some of this ... magical stuff out while you’re waiting for the offense to come I’ll take it,” Maddon said.

It was the 10th game in their past 12 games in which the Cubs have scored two runs or fewer.

Marlins starter Mat Latos (3-6) allowed one run, one hit and two walks in seven innings.

Latos walked Chris Coghlan in the first, then gave up a single to Kris Bryant as Coghlan advanced to third.

Later in the inning, Latos’ wild pitch bounced into the stands, allowing Coghlan to score to put the Cubs ahead, 1-0.

Latos then retired 20 of the next 22 batters, and the Cubs didn’t get another hit until the eighth inning, when Chris Denorfia led off the inning with a pinch-hit double off reliever Carter Capps. Denorfia scored on Coghlan’s single.

Pedro Strop struck out one in the eighth, and Jason Motte earned his fourth save.

The ASSOCIATED PRESS CHICAGO – The White Sox want to pile up big numbers on offense. Not on defense.

The last-place Sox committed four errors and trailed by four runs before they scored in their 9-1 loss Sunday to the Baltimore Orioles.

“We’re going to have to start putting up some crooked numbers in the run column to be able to sustain anything,” Sox manager Robin Ventura said.

The Sox had two miscues in the first inning and two more in the four-run seventh as their four-game winning streak ended. The Sox were trying to sweep the Orioles for the first time since 2005.

“Let’s face it – they helped us a lot today, and normally they wouldn’t,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “We were fortunate to take advantage of it.”

Jonathan Schoop homered in his first at-bat since coming off the disabled list, and Miguel Gonzalez threw six solid innings as the Orioles snapped a three-game losing streak.

Adam Jones had two doubles, and Steve Pearce had three hits for Baltimore.

Schoop was activated from the 60-day DL before the game after being sidelined by a sprained right knee. He hit a solo homer in the second inning off Carlos Rodon (3-2), Schoop’s first home run in the majors since April 15.

Four Royals voted to start All-Star Game

NEW YORK – Houston second baseman Jose Altuve passed Kansas City’s Omar Infante in the final days of voting, leaving four Royals as starters for the All-Star Game.

Todd Frazier of the host Cincinnati Reds leapfrogged St. Louis’ Matt Carpenter and will be in the NL starting lineup for the July 14 game at Great American Ball Park.

The voting results were announced Sunday.

AL champion Kansas City will be represented in the starting lineup by outfielders Lorenzo Cain and Alex Gordon, catcher Salvador Perez and shortstop Alcides Escobar. Four players ties the AL record for fan-elected starters, achieved nine times before.

“Winning brings attention, and that’s what we’ve been doing,” Gordon said. “I think we play with a lot of energy, a lot of fun. People have noticed it.”

Eight Royals were on track to start in vote totals announced June 15, but first baseman Eric Hosmer, third baseman Mike Moustakas and designated hitter Kendrys Morales also were overtaken.

“We’re going to have a blast,” said Royals manager Ned Yost, managing the AL team. “The All-Star Game is an experience you never forget, and to do it with so many of our teammates there is really special.”

Yost has already made one decision: Cain will play right field and Mike Trout of the Los Angeles Angels will play center. Trout will make his fourth straight All-Star appearance.

Seattle’s Nelson Cruz, suspended for the final 50 games of 2013 for violating baseball’s drug agreement, was elected to start for the second straight year. In the closest vote at any position, his 10.6 million votes edged Morales’ 10.32 million.

Toronto’s Josh Donaldson will start at third for the second straight year after getting a record vote total of 14.09 million, topping Josh Hamilton’s 11.07 million in 2012. Trout was second this year with 14 million.

And with it came the Americans’ elusive third Women’s World Cup title.

Lloyd scored three times as the U.S. burst to a four-goal lead in the first 16 minutes, and the Americans overwhelmed defending champion Japan, 5-2, Sunday for their record third championship and first since 1999.

A sellout crowd that included U.S. Vice President Joe Biden roared in approval for Lloyd’s hat trick, the first ever

in a Women’s World Cup final.

“I was just on a mission,” Lloyd said. “I was on a mission to help my team win this game.”

When it was over, Lloyd collapsed to her knees and pumped her fists. Forward Abby Wambach bear-hugged teary eyed coach Jill Ellis, lifting her off the ground.

Lloyd, voted the Golden Ball as player of the tournament, scored twice in a span of about 135 seconds as the U.S. led, 2-0, by the fifth minute.

Lauren Holiday boosted the lead in the 14th and two minutes later Lloyd made it 4-0 with an audacious 54-yard, right-footed shot from midfield

that sailed over goalkeeper Ayumi Kaihori.

Japan closed on Yuki Ogimi’s goal in the 27th and an own goal by Julie Johnston in the 52nd. Tobin Heath scored two minutes later for the Americans, who had struggled in the World Cup since winning the inaugural tournament in 1991 and again at the Rose Bowl eight years later.

Christie Rampone, the only holdover from the 1999 team, lifted the trophy with Wambach, the 35-year-old former FIFA Player of the Year who lost her regular starting job with age. Wambach was among the most vocal opponents of FIFA’s decision to

play the tournament on artificial turf.

With FIFA President Sepp Blatter staying away during a U.S. criminal investigation of soccer officials, the trophy was presented by FIFA Senior Vice President Issa Hayatou of Cameroon, the head of African soccer’s governing body.

Hope Solo won the Golden Glove as top goalkeeper of the tournament. She played despite critics who urged the U.S. Soccer Federation to drop her after she initially faced two misdemeanor counts of domestic violence from a June 2014 altercation at her half-sister’s house, charges that were dismissed earlier this year.

Kalitta gets Top Fuel win in ‘hometown’ Ohio The ASSOCIATED PRESS NORWALK, Ohio – Doug Kalitta earned his second Top Fuel win of the season Sunday at NHRA Nationals at Summit Motorsports Park.

Kalitta secured his 37th career victory by driving his dragster past Antron Brown in the final round. Kalitta had a time of 3.823 seconds at 322.34 mph, while Brown’s machine lost traction and trailed with a 3.918 at 307.79.

“This is our hometown track, and it was great having a lot of family and close friends here, so it doesn’t get much better than that,” said Kalitta, who is based in Ypsilanti, Michigan. “It was a great team effort today. It’s tough to win out here on Sunday, and I’m glad we were able to pull it off today. You have to be on your game.”

Jack Beckman, Greg Anderson and Karen Stoffer also won at the NHRA stop west of

Cleveland.

Beckman beat Courtney Force in the final round for his third Funny Car victory of the season. Beckman’s final-round performance of 4.211 seconds at 301.67 mph in a Dodge Charger R/T was enough for his 18th career victory.

Anderson earned his fourth Pro Stock victory of the season and No. 78 for his career by holding off rookie Drew Skillman in the final

round. Anderson posted a 6.592 at 212.19 to finish just of front of Skillman, whose Camaro clocked a 6.594 at 211.43.

In the third pro final round featuring a pair of female finalists in NHRA history, Stoffer defeated Angelle Sampey to take the Pro Stock Motorcycle victory. Stoffer earned her second win of the season and eighth of her career on a Suzuki when Sampey fouled at the start on her Buell.

A foot specialist will examine your son’s shoes to check for signs of excessive wear. Worn shoes often provide valuable clues to poor bone alignment and problems with gait. (Gait describes how your feet and legs move when you walk.)

The doctor will ask your son to walk barefoot to evaluate his arches, to check for out-toeing and to look for other signs of poor foot mechanics.

The doctor will also examine his feet for flexibility and range of motion and feel for tenderness or bony abnormalities.

When flatfoot does not cause symptoms, no treatment is needed.

For mild pain or aching, over-the-counter pain relievers may be effective.

If your son does have symptoms, doctors have several treatments to offer. The easiest (and least expensive) are store-bought arch supports.

These are enough for many people. If the doctor thinks your son needs more support, he or she may prescribe a customized, therapeutic shoe insert made from a mold of your son’s foot, or a corrective shoe.

These devices support the arch and correct any imbalance in the mechanics of the foot.

This not only helps to relieve pain, but also prevents foot and joint damage.

Surgery to improve foot alignment is typically a last resort for people with significant pain that does not respond to other therapies.

What does that mean?

Is it something that needs to be treated?

Dear Reader: A person is said to be flat-footed when the foot loses the gently curving arch on the inner side of the sole.

That’s why flatfeet sometimes are called “fallen arches.”

If the arch is flattened only when standing and returns when the foot is lifted off the ground, the condition is called flexible flatfoot. If the arch is never present, the condition is called rigid flatfoot. (I’ve put an illustration of flatfoot on my website, AskDoctorK. com.)

How can parents tell if they or their child have flatfeet? A fairly simple way to get an idea is to find a flat surface that looks different when it’s wet, like a concrete floor or walkway. Get your child’s feet wet. Then have the child stand on that concrete surface. If you can see the entire bottom of his foot in wet outline, the feet probably are flat.

Flexible flatfeet are considered normal in young children. The arch may not form fully until sometime between ages 7 and 10.

Even in adulthood, up to 25 percent of people have flexible flatfeet. In many of these adults, the missing arch is an inherited condition related to loose ligaments, fibrous tissues that connect bones to one another.

Most children and adults with flexible flatfeet never have symptoms.

However, their toes may point outward as they walk. A person who develops symptoms usually complains of tired, aching feet, especially after prolonged standing or walking.

Dear Abby: My son had an affair that resulted in the birth of a child outside his marriage.

The baby is extremely ill. My daughter-in-law has forgiven my son for his infidelity, and along with my two grandchildren, the little family is trying to rebuild and also do right by the baby.

The baby’s mother stays in contact with us, although she is bitter and unpleasant to my son because he would not leave his family for her.

However, she does keep us abreast of the baby’s ongoing medical condition and needs.

She confided to me that she got pregnant hoping that my son would finally leave his family.
